Sarajevo is one of the most vibrant cities of Eastern Europe. Regardless of weather, timetable or mood, each person can find something for themselves. Sarajevo has a handful of pubs, bars and cafes that will meet the expectations of even the most demanding ones.

Nightlife in Sarajevo refutes even the strongest introverts and simply invites you to socialise. Don’t worry if you’re a solo traveler, just be open-minded and you’ll be surrounded by friends in no time.

Great atmosphere, cheap beer and friendly people

What is extremely specific to Sarajevo is that there is no strict rule that you must follow when it comes to days of the week. Even though young people prefer the weekend, you will have a great time every other day. The Sarajevans thus “invented” Monday for a Sunday break and a perfect start to the workweek, a Wednesday that deserves its place because it is in the middle of the workweek, a Thursday because it is a great day for salsa and a Friday that deserves a throne because it is the last day of the workweek .

Tuesday is not a favorite day though. There are many superstitions around Tuesday that prevent locals from leaving their homes. However, a “support group” on Tuesdays has also recently emerged. If you decide to experience the nightlife on Tuesdays, you will find many people who go out for a spat because it is Tuesday. Either way, Sarajevo is simply the perfect city for nightlife. 

People are always very happy and will take every opportunity they can to go out. Don’t be fooled by being invited for coffee. This call often implies “just one beer” that will end with a great atmosphere, liters of alcohol and an inimitable dance.

The prior thing for a good time in Sarajevo is music. Although you will find different music in different places, the best choice for the Sarajevans is old rock, which in the later hours magically “transforms” into folk music and dance. 

Warm Up in a cosy ambience

Tavern (Birtija)

This is one of the most unique and authentic places in the old town od Sarajevo. It is officially called “Birtija” which means convivial saloon mostly visited by locals. Every birtija should have its local special drink and, at this place, it is visnjevaca- local cherry brandy. Despite not so spacious, the interior is unbelievably cozy and friendly. If you are stuck in with boring conversations, you can relax your mind with plethora interesting wall ornaments and enjoy silent jazz and blues. The staff is incredibly friendly too. As soon as you enter Birtija, you already have a new friend or two.

If you are looking for an authentic local place Vino i Rakija kod Rake is the perfect tavern for you. It is all about typical, well-known Bosnian hospitality and “ cejf ” here. This unique and impressive place is a must while in Sarajevo. The decoration remains on antique steampunk theme and you won’t see many places in the world that include such a level of interior design. The place has its own style which you need to respect so do not expect some over fancy service. The ambience is great (make sure to check out the toilette), staff is very nice and the music (from jazz to classic) is a cherry on a top.

Sarajevsko Pub

Caffe rajvosa.

Cafe Bar RajvoSa is the perfect representative of the typical Sarajevo culture and utopia. This is one of the most authentic bars and has got its name drawn from slang (RajvoSa = Sarajevo). If you choose to visit this place, in the charming atmosphere of the garden or in the dark but cozy small interior, you will be able to watch some sports, enjoy Jugoslavian rock music, tasty Sarajevo beer and endless sports dialogues with locals who swore their loyalty to this bar.

The most attractive thing about Balkan Express is the crew and interesting Casablanca-ish atmosphere. The unappealing thing might be a cigarette smoke but this is the case for most of the places in Sarajevo.

Gastro pub Vucko

This is a true paradise for beer lovers. It offers more than 120 types of beer, 15 of which are craft. Besides drinks you will also have a chance to order some of the delicious snacks and dishes served on a special mat that will take you back to 1984. The bar is named after the mascot of the Winter Olympics and was created with the idea of ​​reminiscing about the golden age of Sarajevo.

This bar is named after the bridge Festina Lente and it offers a great view at the bridge right from the window. Just like the bridge, modern but perfectly integrated in the ambience of Sarajevo, this pub is a kind of art. The interior is perfectly calming, the staff extremely friendly and the beer excellent.

Get the party started

The history, tradition and quality in one place best describe this unique facility.  Until the beginning of the aggression in BiH, this pub was a favourite gathering place for poets, writers, actors, journalists and a symbol of the bohemian milieu of Sarajevo. The pub which was previously named “Kod Sameka” was a favorite place of the famous poet Tin Ujevic , who wrote some of his most famous poems in it. Besides a great beer, place is famous for delicious sausages and live performances of local bends.

Situated in a laneway right in the centre of the old town, this bar is a perfect gem to hide and enjoy some really good music and order something from their menu of craft beer, wines and spirits. It is one of the favourite places of young local artists and, moreover, it has a board shop inside. Although the bar does not have an onsite restaurant, you can easily order some food from the nearby restaurants and enjoy hours in budget friendly drinks and great friendly atmosphere.

Djulagin Dvor

If you want to experience the typical Bosnian nightlife, this is the right place for you, at least on Fridays and weekends when there are live gigs at the restaurant. The incredible atmosphere will simply make you dance and even learn sing a few verses.  Djulagin Dvor offers a variety of drinks and food that you can order and the prices are absolutely reasonable. Considering that on a day of live music the place is crowded with locals on the it is best to book a table at least a day in advance.

City Pub is located in the heart of Sarajevo. The guiding idea was to play a place where everyone would feel welcome and where the atmosphere would invite you to dance right after your first drink. This pub is known as one of the favourite for summer variants, especially during the Sarajevo Film Festival.

This bar recently became one of the most popular places for the night out and is recognised by a great atmosphere, tasty food (try their burgers) and really good various music played by some of the best Sarajevo DJ-s. The name of the bar was inspired by the character and work of one of the greatest minds of the 20th century, Nikola Tesla. This is the reason of dark interior, painted ceiling with Tesla’s invention and, most recognisable, life-sized sculpture of the famous scientist in located at the entrance to the pub.

Don’t be fooled by the name. This pub is named after the Football Club and is one of the best representatives of Sarajevo Pubs. With an excellent craft beer offering, you will be able to enjoy a friendly atmosphere characterized by excellent music and sports channels until late into the night. Pubs are favourite places of Sarajevans for night out, so you will hardly find a place on the weekends. Nevertheless, it is still worth trying out.

As the name suggests, this place used to be a legit cinema. Currently, it has been transformed into a tavern that is open only on Mondays and has become a traditional favourite of locals. With cheap beers and spirits, live sevdah music performers and an incredibly vibrant atmosphere, this place will make you stay as long as possible. The pace of the Kino Bosna is overwhelming and the venue has succeeded in building an idea where Mondays create a perfect correlation between the alternative scene and tradition.

This is probably one of the best places to visit if you are into live performances of local rock bands. The bar is located in the basement and, during the weekends, it is almost impossible to find available table. Pink Houdini

If you are into jazz this is a perfect place to be. Pink Houdini offers a dark and cosy interior with a truly unique inner decorations. Another plus for this place is the fact it is one of the rare clubs with smoking strictly forbidden which makes a great place for all of the foreign visitors who can’t get used on Balkan tradition of smoking. The place has a very strong character and is not for anyone’s taste so there is a small chance, if you do not connect with it, you might end up a bit bored. The best recommendation is to go with a flow, enjoy some really good music and involve in conversations with very friendly and cheerful visitors and staff.

The place is located opposite the national théâtre in the centre of town and is one of the central points during the Film Festival. The best way to describe this place is by analyzing its name. Jazz + bina on local language means Jazz stage but if you cut one letter “z” you will get a word which means “burrow”. This is exactly what this club is- a sanctuary for all jazz, blues and R’n’R fans. The interior is very modern and cosy at the same time. For all of you who are interested in quality live music shows and good beverages, this is a just the right place. Club is often crowded and on certain nights they will be charging symbolic entrance fee.

Second last and most likely the least favourite place on the list. The club has its points for its vibrant energy and the fact it is also open on Wednesdays. This is just the way this places rolls.
