Cycling in the Finger Lakes: 6 bike trails worth exploring

  • March 10, 2021 6:16 PM

Digital Team

New York’s Finger Lakes Region is known for its stunning scenery and countless outdoor activities. Alongside hikers and boaters, the area attracts cyclists from all over the world, and it’s easy to understand why. With more than seventy-five trails traveling through vineyards, past waterfalls, and along the lakes, the region is rich with varied landscapes and rides for all skill levels.

Once you decide to take a cycling trip around the Finger Lakes, planning and preparations are relatively simple, given the existing infrastructure and cycle-friendly destinations. One of the first decisions you’ll need to make is whether to ride from location to location with your belongings or utilize a base, like an inn or hotel. Though both options are standard in the area and ultimately, it will depend on your group’s skill level, time of the year, and weather conditions.

If you’re planning on bringing a personal bike, it’s essential to check it over before embarking on your cycling adventure. Performing maintenance is easy to do at home with a sturdy bike stand and can save you time and money as you’re more likely to avoid breakdowns along your route. Ensure your bike is clean, inspect the tires, check that nuts and bolts are screwed in tightly, and test the brakes. If you need to schedule a more extensive repair or order a replacement part, it may affect your trip’s timing.

geneva skyline tour

Once you’ve completed the preliminary steps, you can move on to the exciting part— deciding where you’ll go . Though there’s no shortage of bike trails in the Finger Lakes Region, these six offer some of the most exciting rides and scenic views.

Keuka Outlet Trail

After exploring the forty-four miles worth of routes around Keuka Lake, riders may enjoy traveling along the Keuka Outlet Trail . It’s a seven-mile journey that runs parallel to the former “Crooked Lake Canal” and connects Keuka and Seneca Lakes. This scenic and history-packed journey brings riders past waterfalls, ravines, and ruins of old mills.

Catharine Valley Trail

The Catharine Valley Trail offers a shady twelve-mile ride along a gravel path. The trail is well-maintained and made up of tightly-packed limestone, making it accessible to those still new to off-road riding. The track also follows the towpath along an old canal, allowing visitors to explore a glacier gorge, iconic waterfalls, and a beautiful marina.

Geneva Skyline Tour

Geneva is a small city nestled on the north shore of Seneca Lake. The Geneva Skyline Tour is a thirty-five-mile loop that takes cyclists through charming streets and past some of the city’s best-known attractions. Though mostly paved, the route does include some dirt paths as you leave the city to explore nearby farmland.

Cayuga Lake Trail

For those looking for more of a challenge, the Cayuga Lake Trail follows its namesake’s shore. The 101-mile loop—which typically begins and ends in Ithaca—offers waterfront views for most of the ride. Additionally, Cayuga is the longest of the Finger Lakes and is known for the surrounding wineries .

Ontario Pathways Trail

Like many trails in the region, this path started its life as a railbed. This route is a multi-use trail composed of two 11.5 mile legs from Canandaigua to Stanley and Stanley to Phelps. On it, you’ll pass through vineyards and farms, cross thirteen bridges, and ride alongside rivers and small waterfalls.

Ring Around Geneseo

As its name suggests, this route takes you through the National Historic Landmark Village of Geneseo, just south of Rochester. At six miles, it’s a short ride offering a unique and stunning landscape. This little loop is unforgettable with the town’s quintessential main street, historic buildings and water fountain, and vistas of the Genesee River Valley.

Wrapping up

Regardless of which path you take, you’ll be sure to experience scenic views, rolling landscapes, and extravagant water features as you traverse Finger Lakes and its many trails.

Geneva Old Town

View of Geneva from lake

Hotel de Ville

2 rue de l’Hôtel-de-Ville, Geneva 1204

There are quite a few free things to do in Geneva, including entrance to the Hotel de Ville. This is a building of real historical importance. In 1864, the Hotel de Ville played host to the signing of the very first Geneva Convention. The first assembly of the League of Nations was also held on-site.

Nowadays, the building acts as the city’s town hall, providing an elegant place for representatives of the Republic and Canton of Geneva to meet.

Along with its noble links to politics and power, the Hotel de Ville also has an architectural allure: the 16 th -century building is neoclassical in design and has a vast courtyard, too.

Maison Tavel

Rue due Puits-St-Pierre 6, 1204 Geneva

Located in the Old Town, close to St Peter’s Cathedral, Maison Tavel is the oldest house in the city and easily makes our list of great places to visit in Geneva.

You can’t miss Mason Tavel – it has an impressive line of cannons out the front to welcome you!

Built in the 12th century by the Maison family, the building now serves as a museum, showcasing the history of the city in all its glory.

Visitors to the museum can enjoy perusing the exhibits and objects, many dating back to medieval times. Head to the top floor and see the star of the show – a 3D map of Geneva that dates back to 1850.

Cathedral St-Pierre

Cathedral St-Pierre Geneva

Address: Place du Bourg-de-Four 24, 1204 Geneva

Cathedral St-Pierre is situated in the heart of Geneva’s Old Town, overlooking the city.

The cathedral is more than 850 years old and has an eclectic style, due to the fact that it has been reconstructed many times over the years (the last known rebuild occurred in the 18 th century).

Visitors are invited to visit both the South and North Towers, where they can take in the awe-inspiring views of the city, and there’s an interesting archaeological site to explore too.

If you want to partake in some serious sightseeing in Geneva, this place is a must.

Place du Bourg-de-Four

Situated close to St Peter’s Cathedral, the Place du Bourg-de-Four once hosted two castles but nowadays, both the Castle of Count Geneva and the Castle of Coudr é e are long gone.

Today the area is a commercial hub, and its bustling cafes attract visitors from far and wide. Pull up a chair alongside the Genevois, who stop by regularly for a coffee and to soak up the lively atmosphere.

Chocolate Flavours Walking Tour

Chocolates

Like to taste the best chocolate in Geneva? I don’t blame you!

You’ll find numerous chocolate shops in Geneva but a great way to discover what’s on offer is to join a chocolate walking tour.

As part of a guided tour, you can visit different artisan chocolatiers and sample their delicacies, whilst also learning about the history of chocolate-making in Switzerland.

Tours operate daily at 10am.    Click here to check prices and book your place.

Lake Geneva

Cruise boat on Lake Geneva

One of the top attractions in Geneva, if not the top attraction, Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) lies on the north side of the Alps and is shared between Switzerland and France.

There’s a whole host of things to do in Lake Geneva; it’s one of the largest lakes in Western Europe and has plenty of attractions, as you’ll read below.

You can visit Chillon Castle, watch the dancing waters of Jet d’Eau, or take a stroll along the shoreline. With so many things to do on Lake Geneva, you have plenty of choices.

Jet d’Eau Fountain Geneva

Address: Central Lake Geneva (near the corner of Quai Gustave Ador ~20).

One of the lake’s most iconic sites, the Jet d’Eau (water jet) shoots water 140 metres into the air and is the tallest fountain on the planet.

Built in 1886, the water jet was primarily installed for functional purposes, to aid a hydraulic plant. However, people soon became enamoured with the dancing waters, and the fountain became synonymous with the city.

With its new status as an attraction firmly fixed, the fountain was relocated to the heart of the lake. Visitors can now watch the water shooting sky high whilst strolling along the nearby pathway – but watch out for the jets, and don’t be surprised if you get an impromptu shower!

Jardin Anglais and the Flower Clock

Flower Clock, Geneva

Address: Quai du Général-Guisan 34, 1204 Genève

If you’re looking for things to do in Geneva with kids, you could pay a visit to the Jardin Anglais. Dating back to 1854, this English-style park was added to the wooden harbour area to improve its appearance.

The park provides a perfect escape from the hubbub of the city and allows kids a chance to run around and let off steam. You can enjoy the monumental fountains and take a leisurely stroll along one of the many paths.

The Jardin Anglais is also home to Geneva’s famous flower clock (l’horloge fleurie), which dates back to 1955 and serves as a reminder of Geneva’s watchmaking heritage.

Lake Geneva Cruises

Visitors to Lake Geneva shouldn’t miss the opportunity to board a boat and take a cruise. There are a number of different boat trips available offering you the chance to get closer to the Jet d’Eau and admire the lakeside cities and towns from the calm waters of the lake.

Popular cruises include:

  • 1-hour Lake Geneva Sightseeing Cruise – click here to check prices
  • Yvoire Castle visit and Lake Geneva Cruise – click here to check prices

Geneva’s International District

Geneva is home to more than 200 international organisations and you’ll find the headquarters for many of these in the International District around the Place des Nations.

International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum

Address: Avenue de la Paix 17, 1202 Genève

Adopted under the original Geneva Convention of 1864, the Red Cross is well-known the world over for its humanitarian efforts.  The organisation started after Geneva local Henri Dunant returned from a battle in northern Italy in 1859 in which 40,000 soldiers were killed or injured.

Dunant was deeply affected by the suffering he saw and, on his return to Geneva, set about establishing an organisation (the Red Cross) that would help those wounded in battle.

The museum tells the story of the Red Cross, highlighting the valuable work carried out relating to human rights, disaster response, and victims tracing, amongst its other work.

The museum also provides a fascinating insight into the life and work of its co-founder, the Swiss humanitarian, businessman, and visionary, Henri Dunant.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum is open daily year-round (except Mondays and four days at Christmas/New Year).

Palais des Nations/Parc des Nations

United Nations building in Geneva

Address: 14, Avenue de la Paix, Geneva 1211 Switzerland

Built between 1929 and 1936, the Palais des Nations serves as the European Headquarters of the UN. The second-largest United Nations centre (New York lays claim to the largest), it’s estimated that around 25,000 ambassadors visit the office every year.

The building is situated in the centre of the Parc de l’Ariana and overlooks the majestic Lake Geneva. On a clear day, you can see the Alps and Mont Blanc from the building; no wonder it attracts so many diplomats!

Visitors can experience the Palais des Nations for themselves. The main entrance is lined with the flags of each member state of the UN, and parts of the building are open to the public where you can admire the artwork and frescoes adorning the walls and ceilings.

You can also join an informative guided tour to find out more about this important building and the work that goes on here.

Broken Chair

The Broken Chair in front of the the United Nations Building, Geneva

Address: 1202 Genève, Place des Nations

Opposite the flag-lined entrance to the Palais des Nations on the square known as the Place des Nations, sits a chair.

But this is no ordinary chair! For a start, it only has three legs, which may lead you to question why a broken piece of furniture is deemed worthy of a place among Geneva’s top attractions.

However, this particular chair happens to be an iconic work of art, produced in 1997 by sculptor Daniel Berset, and has significant meaning.

The chair is sculpted from wood, is 12 metres high, and was crafted for the NGO Handicap International.

Visitors are urged to pause at the chair and think of those who have been maimed or killed by landmines, with the hope that it will prompt people to call for the prohibition of the mines.

Reformation Wall

Reformation Wall, Geneva

Address: Murs des reformateurs, Promenade des Bastions 1, 1204 Genève

Situated close to the pretty Place de Neuve (one of the main squares in Geneva) and next to University of Geneva, the Reformation Wall is part of the old city walls that stand above Parc des Bastions.

Visiting this iconic wall – which stretches for 100 metres – is considered to be one of the top things to do in Geneva, and we can understand why.

The wall features painstakingly carved statues depicting the four main advocates of the Protestant Reformation – John Calvin, William Farel, Théodore de Bèze and John Knox.

Sculpted by Paul Landowksi, who is known for his work on Rio de Janiero’s ‘Christ the Redeemer’ statue, the Reformation Wall is another fine example of the artist’s work.

Day Trips from Geneva

There are enough things to do to fill a couple of days sightseeing in Geneva, but if you would like to venture further afield, there are also plenty of interesting places to visit near Geneva .

The lakeside town of Montreux is well worth a visit, cheese-lovers will want to visit the village of Gruyeres , whilst a day trip to the ski resort of Chamonix is one of the best things to do in Geneva in winter.

How to spend 3 days in Geneva, Switzerland

Planning a trip to Switzerland and looking for cities to add to your travel itinerary? You can consider Geneva, one of the most alluring cities in Switzerland. Known for its stunning views of the Swiss Alps and the gorgeous Lake Geneva, the city is also home to international organizations such as the United Nations and the World Health Organization. Our suggested itinerary is designed to show you the best the city has to offer and what are the things you can accomplish in 3 days. Depending on your interests and travel priorities, you can certainly mix and match destinations, activities, and attractions.

Things to know before traveling to Geneva:

Language – Though Switzerland is not really a big country, be prepared to encounter citizens who speak different languages depending on the city you are visiting. German is widely spoken in the north, central, and eastern regions, French in the west and Italian in the south. Most Swiss speak English, so you can absolutely get by without speaking French, Italian or German language.

Money and costs – Switzerland is an expensive destination. Those amazing transportation options, meals, hotels and attractions come at a cost. Once you get there, expect your hotel to cost you an average of USD 200 per night and that cheap pizza at a restaurant will cost you USD 30. So before you get on that plane make sure you packed enough cash and budget accordingly so your trip doesn’t cost more than expected. After all, Geneva holds the record of the most expensive hotel suite in the world thanks to the Royal Penthouse Suite of Hotel President Wilson ( 12 bedrooms, bullet proof windows, chauffeured Royce Rolls and the ability the transform the entire Penthouse floor of the hotel into a panic room,  defenitely comes at a price… 82,000 USD to be exact ).

The currency in Switzerland is Swiss Franc ( CHF ). Euros are widely accepted but it is recommended to have enough Francs as some hotels and restaurants do not accept other currencies. You may use debit cards and credit cards but watch out for ATM fees and foreign transaction fees, which can very high per transaction.

Swiss franc banknotes

Etiquette – The Swiss are warm and welcoming to foreign visitors, but it’s important to remember some do’s and dont’s to enjoy a faux pas free journey. Greetings for both men and women is a simple handshake, direct eye contact and an appropriate greeting depending on time of the day. Always greet with titles unless you’re on familiar terms with them or until your Swiss friend suggests otherwise. The Swiss highly regard privacy, so avoid asking personal questions.

Getting around – Being a relatively small city, Geneva can be easily explored on foot or on a bicycle. You can either bike on your own or you can join one of the guided biking tours offered in the city. Also, traveling using public transportation in Geneva is relatively easy as all roads are well-maintained and the public transport system is one of Europe’s finest. If you stay in a hotel, hostel or a campsite within the canton of Geneva, then you will qualify for a free Geneva Transport Card, which provides free use of the public transportation system of the city for the whole duration of your stay. How to get one? Just ask at the reception of your hotel when you check-in.

Also, if you fly to Geneva, you can get a free 80-minute ticket for Geneva Public Transport for free. This ticket allows arriving passengers to get to the city center for free. It is valid for the airport train, bus, tram and mouette. The ticket machine is located at the luggage claim area and prints the free ticket without requirements or limitations. All you have to do is just press the button

Where to stay – Geneva has some of the best youth hostels and luxury hotels ideally nestled in the heart of the city. The most frequently asked question from first time travelers is, “What’s the best area to stay in when visiting Geneva?”  If you are going to follow our suggested itinerary, we recommend a hotel/hostel in the center of the Old Town since all of the main sights are so close to each other and can be easily reached on foot.

Hotel to consider in Geneva:

Hotel d’Angleterre

Hotel Bristol

Eden Hotel Geneva

Hotel Rotary Geneva – MGallery Collection

La Cour des Augustins – Boutique Gallery Design Hotel

For the second day, embark on one of the most interesting day trips from Geneva by joining a full day tour of Chamonix and Mont Blanc . You will have an opportunity to take a scenic railway ride for stunning views of the iconic Alps. You will also have enough time in the summit to marvel at the views and enjoy the cool mountain air.

Your final day in the city can be spent on last-minute shopping and seeing those Geneva attractions that you haven’t yet had time for. You may also dedicate this day to Palais des Nations , the headquarters of the United Nations Office at Geneva ( UNOG ). Aside from its vast array of works of art, Palais des Nations itself has a magnificent architecture with an equally interesting history. It was was built between 1929 and 1938 as the headquarters of the League of Nations but in 1946 became the office of the United Nations even though Switzerland did not join the UN until 2002.

Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland

If you still have time, you may also visit the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum . Head back to your hotel, then to the airport in time to check in for your international flight, or you may opt to continue traveling independently in Switzerland, or extend your stay in Geneva. Make sure to stock up on Gruyère cheese and Swiss chocolates before you go!

Red Cross Museum, Geneva, Switzerland

This is the end of our 3-day suggested itinerary. Remember, this is just a guide for planning and is in no way, shape or form, the only way to travel the city. There are several alternative routes of travel within the city and it will depend on your intended length of stay. Enjoy Geneva!

Cycling in the Finger Lakes: 7 bicycling trails and paths

  • Updated: Apr. 06, 2016, 1:00 p.m. |
  • Published: Apr. 06, 2016, 12:00 p.m.

No question, the Finger Lakes  region has more than enough natural beauty to satisfy hikers, campers, boaters, and winery enthusiasts. Prefer to pedal on two wheels? No worries, bicyclists: the options for fun in the Finger Lakes stretch out farther than the eye can see. On the grand scale, Seneca Lake  offers up 77 miles for its roadway loop; Keuka Lake  has 44 miles. Looking for something a bit more leisurely, say a mile or two or 10? The Finger Lakes has that, too.

Located in the western Finger Lakes, Canadice Lake is a well-kept secret, but cyclists know the treasure that awaits here. This 8-mile down-and-back trail, along the lake's west side, can be extended an additional mile if you opt for the side trails that present more difficult terrain. The trail is gravel and grass track and is shared with hikers and runners.

This 12-mile trek from

south to Midway may come as a bit of a surprise, as it is mostly flat in a region known for its hills. Riders will enjoy the former rail bed's scenery. Take the trail a bit further to Horseheads for a total of 15 miles. Pick up the trail at the southern point of Seneca Lake in downtown Watkins Glen, near the marina and Harbor Hotel.

There are so many terrific rides near Seneca Lake, it's tough to pick just one. Ride the eastern shore using Sampson State Park (a loop of just over 7 miles), or Lakeshore Park at the north end (you'll find a 9-mile loop of paved surface here). Stretch a longer ride into two or more days, and take your pick of wineries, bed and breakfasts, and restaurants along the way.

Also known as Keuka Outlet Trail, this 7-mile stretch connects Keuka and Seneca lakes, and runs parallel to a former canal bed. Because it's multi-use trail, you'll likely share the path with hikers. There is a lot packed into this short ride: waterfalls and old mills make for some not-to-be-missed scenery.

Geneva's position at the north tip of Seneca Lake makes it not only a beautiful place to visit, but promises great views all around. As a cyclist, you'll need to work extra hard to keep your eyes on the road in front of you for this bike tour. A 35-mile loop has been mapped out, featuring mostly city streets, but some out of the way paths as well. This is a great way to see the area's winery influence, farmlands, and small city life.

At 28 miles, this trail takes cyclists between two wildly popular and incredibly beautiful neighbors,

. The ride is considered moderate in difficulty, due to terrain and several twists and turns. If you have the time, explore either of the parks on their own via bicycle. You'll not be disappointed.

The creeks and wooden bridges that characterize this

trail make it terrific for mountain biking, but also a lot of fun for families. It's a short trail, at 1.6 miles, and good for all skill levels. Pick up the trail at Crow Hill Road and Frost Street in Mottville, or just north of Skaneateles on the Seneca Turnpike. Both ends have parking.

A Guide to Geneva: What to Do and Where to Stay

By justine gosling in destination guides.

Geneva is at its best in the summer months when temperatures hover around 30 degrees, and the city's inhabitants take to the lake to enjoy the sunshine and cool off. Autumn is also a good time to stroll the golden leafed parks under blue skies, and sample the local wine harvest. Year round, explore luxury shops and take in this international city’s many cultural offerings.

The best places to visit in Geneva

St. Pierre Cathedral

The St. Pierre Cathedral dates back to the 12th Century

The cobbled old town, with its narrow passages and hidden courtyards, is centred on a hill around the 12th century Cathedral Saint-Pierre and the pretty pedestrian square of Place du Bourg-de-Four. The perfect place to start your trip and one of the best things to do in Geneva, is to climb the 157 steps to the top of the cathedrals tower for panoramic views of the city. The square is the heart of the old town’s social scene with the cafes and bars terraces extending outside, around the square's fountain. Café de Bourg-de-Four has been open since 1874 and its walls display paintings of Geneva’s history.

After your climb, drop in for lunch with the locals and order rosti, shredded and fried potato, Switzerland’s unofficial national dish. Walk back along the tree lined Promenade de la Treille which overlooks the tree tops of Parc des Bastions. The promenade is also home to the World’s longest wooden bench, measuring 126 meters. In Parc des Bastions, stop for coffee at the pretty Café Restaurant du Parc des Bastions and watch the locals compete at giant chess.

Jet d'Eau

The iconic Jet d'Eau on Lake Geneva

The Pâquis district is the location of the central train station and is a lively hub for fast food, restaurants and vibrant cafeterias. For spectacular lakeside views, stay at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel de la Paix, Geneva. Enjoy a walk along the wide promenade of Paquis, the Quai du Mont Blanc, which runs all the way from the Mont Blanc bridge towards the Bains des Paquis, a must visit whatever time of year, for the hammams, saunas and Turkish baths. Of the fun things to do, jumping in the lake is the most invigorating.

Enjoy a delicious lunch of delicious baked Figs stuffed with goat’s cheese at the Cottage Café among leafy trees in a small park behind the historic Brunswick Monument. Sit outside for views of the iconic Jet d'Eau, a fountain that shoots water 140 metres in the air will be seen from your table. Wondering where to go come nightfall? Head to FRED bar for experimental Nordic influenced cocktails.

Stay at the Hotel President Wilson situated on the shores of Lake Geneva with unrivalled views across the water including the iconic Jet d’Eau.

Just beyond the city centre over river Arve, Carouge was built by the King of Sardinia in the late 1700s, hence its Italian style of stone archways, painted shutters and red roofs. By randomly wandering the histrionic streets you’ll find many antique shops, boutiques, galleries and art studios. Check out experimental art and cutting-edge performances at the contemporary art space at FLUX Laboratory.

The creative vibe continues into the night with a buzz of cafes, jazz bars and nightclubs, particularly around Rue Vautier. Have dinner at French themed Le Bistroquet who source all their ingredients locally, then dance to live music at the legendary Chat Noir Club.

Plainpalais

United Nations building

The United Nations is based in Geneva

Bustling with students, young locals and expats, Plainpalais is Geneva’s most diverse area and not to be missed. Plainpalais is one of the largest esplanades in Switzerland and famous for hosting the biggest flea market and farmer’s market in Geneva. The area around the plain is packed with bars, restaurants, and cafés. Head to the 1930s café and ice-cream parlour Remor to watch the world go by from its outdoor terrace.

In the nearby Bains district the most interesting thing to do is visit the Quartier des Bains contemporary art association, which gathers 18 cultural venues (galleries, institutions, art centers) and the Museum of modern art. A unique thing to do is to tour the Patek Phillippe watch museum, the highlight being an astronomical watch dating from the 1660s.

Nations is home to many of the 200 international organisations based in Geneva, the most prominent being the European United Nations headquarters. Take a guided tour of the world renowned Palais des Nations, or visit the thought provoking Museum of the International Red Cross. For something alternative, wander the neighbouring park of La Perle du Lac, a pearl on the glittering lake shore.

Lavaux Terraces

The UNESCO listed Lavaux Vineyard is the perfect day trip from Geneva

For a day trip, tour the UNESCO listed Lavaux Vineyard Terraces by foot or e-bike. Stretching along the south-facing northern shores of Lake Geneva from the Chateau de Chillon to the eastern outskirts of Lausanne in the Vaud region, the vineyard terraces cover the lower slopes of the mountainside between the villages and the lake. There’s some evidence that the vines were there in Roman times, but the present terraces date back to the 11th century. Admire the gothic chateaux homes of the super-rich, sample the divine Swiss wine from the barrel and take guided tours of the vineyards and grab lunch from a farm shop.

How to Spend 1 Day in Geneva, Switzerland

Geneva is one of Switzerland’s most visited cities thanks to its international airport and many international organizations. On the shores of  Lake Geneva , it is the second-most populous city in Switzerland and the most populous in the French-speaking part.

geneva skyline tour

Many international organizations are located in Geneva, including the United Nations, the Red Cross, the World Trade Organization, and the World Health Organization. With Pictet Group, Bank Lombard Odier & Co, and more, it’s also a major financial center . In addition, Geneva is home to some of the biggest watch brands in the world , including Patek Philippe, Baume & Mercier, Chopard, and Frédérique Constant.

If you would like to book a guided tour of Geneva, you can book either the Geneva City Tour from Viator or the Geneva: 2-Hour Tour of International Quarters and Old Town from GetYourGuide .

Whether you’re looking for a  1-day itinerary  or a list of  things to do in Geneva, Switzerland  this article is for you. Here are a few ideas for  how you can spend one day in Geneva .

Geneva One Day Itinerary: What can you do?

1.   start your day with a cozy breakfast.

geneva skyline tour

In case your hotel doesn’t offer a breakfast option, you can walk around  Geneva  to  find a café . It is important to find a warm, cozy place to eat breakfast before heading out for sightseeing.

Geneva has plenty of cafés and restaurants that serve hot coffee with delicious pastries. Some recommended coffee shops are listed below:

  • Cottage Café (Rue Adhémar-Fabri 7, Genève) – With a fantastic location near the lake, it has well-priced food of excellent quality. Set in the middle of a park with a view of the Brunswick Monument and Jet d’Eau , you can also have lunch and dinner here.
  • LA BASTIDE Café (Grand-Rue 8, 1204 Genève) – Located in the old town of Geneva, this café is charming. Besides a secret garden with outdoor seating, they have a delicious tea latte selection.
  • Ferdinand Coffee Shop (Pl. du Bourg-de-Four 19, 1204 Genève) – Excellent coffee (possibly the best in Geneva) made with fresh beans. Also, it’s conveniently located in the old town.

After having your breakfast, I suggest that you make your way to Geneva’s Old Town before proceeding to Geneva Cathedral .

2. Visit Geneva’s Landmark – the Jet d’Eau

geneva skyline tour

The 140-meter-high  Jet d’Eau  water fountain is Geneva’s most iconic landmark. Translated from the French words “ water jet “, it’s basically a huge water jet shooting 200 kilometers per hour into Geneva’s skyline.

In my opinion, you can get the best views of  Jet d’Eau  from   Geneva’s lakefront. Walking along the lake will let you see it easily without any obstructions. You can also walk along a  200-meter jetty  ( Jetée des Eaux-Vives ) near Jet d’Eau and see it up close.

From the train station, head down Rue du Mont-Blanc and walk past the lake to Jardin Anglais . You just have to walk toward the Jet d’Eau jetty . With it being so high, it’s easy to see.

If you would like to read more about Jet d’Eau, you can check out our article A Quick Guide to Jet d’Eau: Geneva’s Iconic Water Fountain .

3. Explore the Old Town of Geneva Before Lunch

geneva skyline tour

I recommend walking around Geneva’s Old Town after Jet d’Eau while waiting for St. Pierre Cathedral to open. Geneva’s Old Town is compact, easy to walk through, and charming. Worth visiting are the Town Hall and the Old Arsenal and Canons. That’s why it’s worth exploring until the cathedral opens.

If you would like a guided tour, you can also book one via GetYourGuide here – Geneva: 2-Hour Tour of International Quarters and Old Town.

As an alternative, you can shop along Rue du Rhône or Rue de Rive . Or you can go to Bastions Park and see the Reformation Wall .

Make your way to St. Pierre Cathedral once it opens.

3.   Discover  the St. Pierre Cathedral

geneva skyline tour

When you’re done walking or shopping, you can head to St. Pierre Cathedral. The St. Pierre Cathedral opens between 9:30 AM and noon depending on the day.

Founded over 860 years ago, St. Pierre Cathedral ( Cathédrale Saint-Pierre  in French) is one of Geneva’s most famous churches. It is one of the city’s most visited buildings. John Calvin , the famous French theologian, used to preach here during the Protestant Revolution.

geneva skyline tour

The St. Pierre Cathedral Tower offers panoramic views of Geneva. There’s an extra fee for climbing up the tower. Your entrance ticket can be bought inside.

Make sure you check out the Chapel of Maccabees before you leave. Also called Notre-Dame Collegiate Chapel, it’s the most beautiful part of St. Pierre Cathedral. Jean de Rogny built this chapel between 1400 and 1405.

geneva skyline tour

If you would like to read more about St. Pierre Cathedral , you can check out our article Discover St. Pierre Cathedral in Geneva, Switzerland .

After visiting St. Pierre Cathedral, I suggest visiting a nearby restaurant for a quick lunch.

4. Explore One or Two of Geneva ‘s Best Museums

geneva skyline tour

I recommend visiting one of Geneva’s many museums after lunch. Here are a few of my favorites, but Geneva has a lot more.

  • Musée Ariana (Avenue de la Paix 10, 1202 Genève) – Musée Ariana is the Swiss Museum for Ceramics and Glass Geneva. The museum is dedicated to porcelain, stained glass, and glassware.
  • Muséum d’histoire naturelle (Rte de Malagnou 1, Genève) – With lots of safari animals and birds on display, the Natural History Museum of Geneva spreads over several floors.
  • Musée d’ethnographie de Genève (Bd Carl-Vogt 65, Genève) – This museum shows different human cultures from different continents in the world and is one of the most important ethnographic museums in Switzerland.
  • Maison Tavel (Rue du Puits-Saint-Pierre 6, 1204 Genève) – The Tavel House is Geneva’s oldest private residence. The museum houses many objects, paintings, and maps from Geneva’s past, from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.
  • Patek Philippe Museum (Rue des Vieux-Grenadiers 7, Genève) – This elegant building houses a wonderful collection of watches and jewelry. If you’re a watch fan, you’ll love it.

5. Get a glimpse of the UN and the Broken Chair

geneva skyline tour

It would be great if you could make your way to the UN if you still have time. Discover the United Nations’ work in Geneva by touring the Palais des Nations. The guide will explain how the organization fosters and maintains world peace.

Due to its popularity, you will have to book the tour months in advance. Click here to book it on the UN’s website.

6. Come Aboard the Gourmet Cruise

geneva skyline tour

When you’re done with the museums, you can go to Lake Geneva . Although you can have lunch on the ship, I think you’re better off leaving this activity until dinner.

CGN ( Compagnie Générale de Navigation sur le lac Léman ) or the Lake Geneva General Navigation Company offers a dinner cruise on a Belle Epoque ship for a good price. Take note that you will have to reserve a ticket in advance. To familiarize yourself with their offers, check out the ship’s website at cgn.ch .

If you want to stay in Geneva instead of cruising, here are some restaurants we recommend:
