Las Terrazas & Soroa, Cuba

Las Terrazas and Soroa are two small “eco-communities” set in the cool, forested hills of western Cuba. Located about an hour west of Havana, these two communities are easily accessible from the city and offer up a fine place to relax for a day or two. The air here is fresh, the mountains are lovely, and there aren’t crowds of tourists around.

Las Terrazas & Soroa Cuba

French Haitians originally settled the area around Las Terrazas in the 1790s. They planted coffee but were unsuccessful in maintaining larger operations, and eventually turned to felling trees for charcoal. Not surprisingly, the hillsides were quickly deforested and destroyed. After the revolution, Fidel’s government created a large, 2,000-acre (5,000-ha) reforestation project here, employing the local campesinos and providing housing in a “model village.”

Today, the village stands in stark contrast to the beautiful, mountainous area that surrounds it. The houses are made from whitewashed concrete, and are now somewhat dilapidated. They spread out in terraces along the hillsides above Lago San Juan. Locals still live and work here—you’ll see them walking the hills and drying laundry on their small balconies. The village is a fascinating juncture between the communist projects of post-revolution Cuba and the eco-tourism movement that is beginning to take hold in Las Terrazas.

The area is undoubtedly beautiful and nature lovers will find it appealing. The lake and mountainous backdrop are photogenic, and there are ample ways to get outside and have fun. In fact, Las Terrazas is home to Cuba’s only zip-line canopy tour. Built by Costa Ricans, the canopy tour extends over the surrounding hillsides and includes a total of 6 zip lines. It starts at the hotel and zigzags its way over the village, eventually crossing the lake twice. It’s a fun activity and is popular with both foreigners and nationals alike.

While here, travelers can also visit the ruins of several French coffee plantations. The best is at the Cafetal Buenavista—this coffee plantation that was built in 1801 and now houses the remains of drying terraces, former slave quarters, and an ox-powered coffee grinder. You can enjoy wonderful views from here, and there’s an onsite restaurant as well.

There are a number of ways to enjoy the outdoors in Las Terrazas. The Baños del Rio San Juan hosts several swimming holes formed by a small river. Picnic tables and cabanas overlook the pools, providing nice places to relax when you’re not swimming. A handful of hiking trails wind through the mountains that surround Las Terrazas. Some trails provide wonderful views of the valley and are good for birding—be on the lookout for the Cuban tody, woodpeckers, and the Cuban trogon. Furthermore, horse rides, mountain bike rentals, and kayak excursions can all be arranged.

There is only one hotel in Las Terrazas, but it’s a nice one, with contemporary Spanish-colonial architecture and handsome accommodations. A few good restaurants are scattered around the village, and there are some artisan studios showcasing sculptures, pottery, and paintings.

Soroa is another “eco-retreat” in this area. Named for a Frenchman who owned a coffee plantation here in the 19th century, Soroa is set in a beautiful valley and is about a 20-minute drive from Las Terrazas. There’s also only one hotel here.

The most notable attraction in Soroa is the Soroa Orchid Garden, which was created by a Spaniard in 1943. The garden is fairly large and extends over a hillside with paths leading between large trees, ferns, and greenhouses. A nice variety of delicate, intricately colored orchids are on display in the greenhouses. The garden is home to over 20,000 plants and 700 species, 250 of which are native to Cuba. The Orquideario is best experienced with a guide.

Soroa is home to a 115-foot (35-m) waterfall. Trees surround the falls, and there’s a small natural pool that’s a fine place to swim. While exploring Soroa, travelers can also visit the Mirador de Venus, a lookout that has spectacular views of the valley. Other activities in Soroa include horseback riding, birding, and hiking.

Las Terrazas in a nutshell

Brief history of las terrazas, coffee plantations.

The history of Las Terrazas is quite fascinating. It was in this region that the oldest coffee plantations in the country were established in the early 19th century. Fleeing from the Haitian Revolution, a group of French settlers sought refuge in the Sierra del Rosario and introduced coffee cultivation to Cuba. At its peak in the 1820s-1830s, the region boasted 54 coffee plantations.

However, during the 19th century, coffee production gradually declined and eventually ceased. The region was frequently ravaged by hurricanes, which led to the destruction of the plantations. Additionally, Americans, who were significant consumers of Cuban coffee, began to prefer coffee from Colombia and Brazil.

The establishment of the sustainable community of Las Terrazas

Fast-forwarding to the 1960s, a visionary group of Cuban environmentalists became alarmed by the deforestation threatening the Sierra del Rosario. To combat this issue, they initiated an extensive reforestation program in 1968, planting an impressive seven million terraced trees—hence the name Las Terrazas.

In 1971, an eco-village was created within this reforested area, along with a reservoir, giving birth to what is now known as Las Terrazas. The community currently has a population of just over 1,000 residents.

In 1985, Las Terrazas and its surrounding areas were designated as a UNESCO “biosphere reserve.” Less than a decade later, the Hotel Moka opened its doors, marking the community’s foray into ecotourism. Today, more than 60% of Las Terrazas’ residents rely on tourism as their primary source of income.

Las Terrazas: A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

Since 1985, Las Terrazas and its surrounding areas have been designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. And it’s safe to say that the region is truly remarkable with its intricate geology and abundant biodiversity. There are around 800 plant species here, with 35% of them being endemic, and a diverse array of animal species.

In a nutshell, botanists, ornithologists, and nature enthusiasts of all kinds will find immense delight in visiting Las Terrazas!

Getting to Las Terrazas

Las Terrazas is situated between Havana and Viñales in the Province of Artemisa, approximately 15 kilometers / 9 miles away from Soroa (which, by the way, is also worth a visit).

There are several options for reaching Las Terrazas:

By car: If you have a rental car, you can easily drive to Las Terrazas by yourself. The journey takes about an hour.

By bus: Some Viazul buses that travel between Havana and Viñales make a stop at Las Terrazas.

By shared taxi: Shared taxis that operate between Havana and Viñales may make a stop at Soroa. It’s advisable to remind the driver at the beginning of the trip that you intend to go to Las Terrazas, as they might forget otherwise!

Organized excursion: If you prefer a hassle-free experience, you can choose an organized excursion to Las Terrazas from Havana. While it may not be the cheapest option, it’s undoubtedly the most convenient one! The excursion usually includes stops at Soroa, round-trip hotel transfers, transportation, a welcome cocktail, and a private tour. 👉 To check prices (group rates) and availability: excursion to Las Terrazas

Upon entering the community, there is an entrance fee of 2 CUC per person, unless you have a reservation for an overnight stay, in which case the fee is waived.

What to do in Las Terrazas?

As you’ve probably gathered, there’s no shortage of activities in Las Terrazas, ensuring you’ll have a fulfilling day!

Exploring the Old Coffee Plantations:

The region is home to some of Cuba’s oldest coffee plantations. Many of them are now in ruins and overgrown with vegetation, offering a fascinating sight during hikes in the surrounding areas.

However, two plantations have been preserved:

Cafetal Buenavista: Established in 1801, it is Cuba’s oldest coffee plantation. Visitors can explore a stone mill, former slave quarters, and even dine in the attic of the master’s house, which has been transformed into a restaurant.

Hacienda Unión: This site features a small restaurant and a lovely flower garden. Horseback riding excursions are available in this area.

Hiking in Las Terrazas:

Hiking is the highlight of Las Terrazas, whether you prefer to go on foot, horseback, or by bike. There’s something for everyone!

On-Foot Hiking:

Keep in mind that hiking in Cuba without a guide is not permitted. To get information and select your hike, visit the Oficinas del Complejo near Rancho Curujey or the Hotel Moka. The cost ranges from 15 to 25 CUC per person, depending on the chosen hike.

Note: Although some hikers venture out alone despite the prohibition, it’s recommended to be an experienced hiker to take the risk, as the trails lack directional signage.

Some popular hiking trails include:

  • El Contento: 7.6 km, exploring the ruins of El Contento and San Ildefonso plantations, as well as the Baños del San Juan.
  • El Taburete: 5.6 km, a walk to Loma El Taburete, where a monument pays tribute to Cubans who trained in the Sierra del Rosario with Che Guevara.
  • Sendero La Serafina: 6.4 km, birdwatching and discovering the ruins of Santa Serafina plantation.
  • Sendero Las Delicias: 3 km, exploring Cafetal Buenavista.
  • Bajo del Corte del Tocororo: 6 km, birdwatching and discovering Hacienda Unión.

Horseback Riding:

Similar to the Vinales Valley, you can explore the region on horseback. Guided horseback rides are available from Hacienda Unión, among other options.

Bicycles can be rented at Hotel Moka for 2 CUC per person. There is a 30 km cycling trail that passes through the main points of interest in the region (22 CUC per person).

Ziplining/Canopy Tour in Las Terrazas:

Las Terrazas is home to Cuba’s only ziplines, offering a thrilling canopy tour experience. There are three ziplines in total, allowing you to soar above the village and the picturesque Lago de San Juan. The cost is 35 CUC per person. If you’re enticed by this adventure, make sure to visit the Oficinas del Complejo next to Rancho Curujey.

Baños del San Juan, Natural Pools:

Situated 4 kilometers / 2.5 miles south of Las Terrazas, Baños del San Juan is a collection of natural terraced pools formed along the course of the Río San Juan. This site is primarily frequented by locals.

You’ll find various tourist facilities there, including restaurants, showers, and bungalows for overnight stays (more details on this below in the article). The entrance fee is 10 CUC, which includes lunch.

The House of Polo Montañez:

Polo Montañez, who passed away in 2002, was one of the most renowned musicians in Cuba, specializing in guajira music (traditional rural music) from eastern Cuba.

The House of Polo Montañez now welcomes visitors to explore the life and legacy of this esteemed Cuban artist.

Artists’ Workshops:

Las Terrazas proudly hosts the workshops of several acclaimed Cuban artists, including Lester Campa. His studio-gallery is located just a few steps away from the House of Polo Montañez. There, you can admire his artworks, which are deeply inspired by the landscapes of Las Terrazas. The visit is free of charge.

Las Terrazas, a community situated in Sierra del Rosario, is one of Cuba’s natural strongholds, declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1985. Arriving in Las Terrazas is like penetrating the intensity of exquisite wild places where humans and nature become one. This is the impression exuding from the evergreen forests, rivers and crystal-clear waterfalls. Entering the community is tantamount to having the certainty that such beautiful sites really exist and that human efforts to protect such natural environments will persist. Therefore, planning your next Cuba vacation package here would be a smart choice for eco-friendly travel and adventure-filled holidays.

The complement to leisure lies in its infrastructure, which aims to integrate tourism into the community, as in the case of “Fonda de las Mercedes”, which was designed as an attraction to facilitate the interaction of visitors with a local family and to restore Cuban culinary traditions. The history of coffee cultivation, which started in the region in the 19th century, is one of the major attractions for customers at Buenavista Restaurant, built on the ruins of the coffee farm of the same name, founded by French immigrants.

Private Las Terrazas Tour and Soroa Day Tour Itinerary

Fusterlandia.

Your first stop on your private Las Terrazas tour after pick up is on the outskirts of Havana, in the fishing village of Jaimanitas. It has been transformed through the actions of just one man – artist Jose Fuster – into one giant artwork. Having started with his own home, today more than 80 structures are decorated with mosaic-style tiles, with each personalized to match its incumbent’s nature. The outdoor art exhibition that is Fusterlandia continues to the chess park, and public swimming pools, as you’ll soon discover.

Las Terrazas Township

It wouldn’t be a Las Terrazas tour without spending time in the township itself. As you’re guided on foot through this small country town you’ll be able to see an authentic slice of local life, and admire the beautiful setting of the La Moka ecological hotel, as well as the home of famed Cuban singer Polo Montañez. There will also be time to slip into some of the many artists’ studios too, where you can see and buy unique artworks in pottery, wood, and paint.

El Salto Waterfall

Sometimes called ‘the gateway to the garden of Eden’ due to its fantastic natural setting, the picturesque village of Soroa is home to the stunning El Salto Waterfall. It drops an incredible 22 meters into an enclosed pool perfect for cooling off in, ringed by shade-giving trees and the sounds of the jungle. Don’t forget your swimming costume!

Soroa Orchid Garden

Located amid the Cordillera de Guaniguanico (Guaniguanico Mountains) in the Sierra del Rosario Biosphere Reserve, Soroa’s orchid garden was created in 1943 in an effort by Spanish landowner Thomás Felipe Camacho to improve on nature. Today the orchidario is home to more than 11,000 plants belonging to 700 different species from not just Cuba but from right around the world.

Cafetal Buena Vista ruins

Cuba’s oldest coffee plantation, the partially-restored ruins of Cafetal Buena Vista date back to 1801, when refugees fleeing the nearby nation of Haiti cleared the jungle for its first coffee plants. Now being slowly taken back over by the jungle, the silence of the ruins include much of the original property, including the quarters that housed the slaves who worked the plantation before its downfall.

15 Great Things to do in Viñales, Cuba

Viñales is a small town in the north-central Pinar del Río province but not exactly an off the beaten track Cuban destination . Which doesn’t mean it should be missed! The valley, which is also Unesco world heritage since 1999, looks like dinosaurs are hiding between the numerous mogotes waiting for their lunch. But maybe that’s just me writing this while I’m hungry :-). If you’re doubting if Viñales is worthy of your time, then we can only answer with a resounding YES! Check out our top things to do in Viñales and you might end up staying for a week (like we did!). In fact, it was one of our favourite places to visit in Cuba with kids !

How to get to Viñales?

Vinales, cuba map, getting from havana to viñales.

If you are coming from Havana (like we did, as do most people) it’s a 2h taxi ride or 185 km (115 miles) to get to Viñales. By bus, it should take you a little over 3 hours. You can also book a day trip from Havana to Viñales, but with our little girl and the good things we read about this town, we decided to stay there a bit longer. More than a bit longer actually 🙂 but as far as excuses go we just really liked this place.

At the beginning of the 1800s, the area was colonized by tobacco growers. And in 1871 the first settlement was a fact.

Things to do in Viñales

Let’s start with our favourite things to do in Viñales!

#1 Beautiful scenery

If we are honest a lot of journeys throughout Cuba were beautiful. Getting to your destination is always exciting, and when you are getting close you can see the difference in regions and you know this is a different part of Cuba. The big trees, the horses and carriages, the mogotes it’s like you arrived in a town at a different era. Although tourism is growing in Viñales luckily there are still parts where time stood still.

While looking at the mountains you can see multiple brown spots, those aren’t houses but places where tobacco leaves are left to dry.

We definitely took a lot of photographs in Viñales, and Norah as well!

#2 Tobacco plantations and Honey farms

Some plantations are possible to visit on foot, but we went on horseback. From almost every casa particular you can book a trip to a plantation or ask for more information. They always seem to know someone to help you, got to love Cubans! On your visit, you will get to learn more about the history of tobacco and the whole process of making a cigar. We could also smoke one if we wanted to. I thought our guide (who spoke Spanish, because we want to improve our Spanish) asked if we wanted to try and make one, so I enthusiastically said si gracias (yes thank you). But instead, he was explaining how to light a cigar in the proper way, and there we were smoking our first cigar in Cuba. All thanks to my great knowledge of the Spanish language :). At the farm is the best place to buy cigars if you want to. In Cuba they are obliged to give a large percentage of the tobacco they grow. so what you buy here goes directly to the farmers. You can also be sure it’s made of real tobacco ;).

Not every tobacco plantation solely focuses on growing tobacco but also a large variety of fruits, coffee beans, and even honey!

#3 Horseback riding

I only sat on a horse 2 times and I’m not afraid to admit that I’m not good at horseback riding. As long as they go slow I’m okay :). Babs (the brave one with the most experience) took Norah on her lap and of we went. It was awesome!! The owner of the horses was our guide, and had taken really good care of his horses. We did a trip for 3 hours (you can do a longer trip if you want to +- 5 hours) through the Viñales Vally, where the national park is situated. We walked past a Baobab tree no we weren’t somewhere in Africa, were we? It was so crazy all the different landscapes and all the lush nature. Luckily for me, the horses were very calm so it was a very relaxing ride. Only at the end, the horses got really enthusiastic that they were almost home. Let’s just say it ended well but Norah was really scared :).

Extra tip: – Certain stops are included in the guided horseback tour, so ask your guide in advance and discuss where you want to stop!

#4 Mural de la Prehistoria

This mural de la prehistoria, was painted by Leovigildo González in the 1960’s. It is gigantic and really admirable how he succeeded in doing this mural. It took him 3 years to finish it. They made it to attract more tourists, we believe that’s why they called it prehistorical as well. Although it looks very old this isn’t prehistorical although the mural explains the evolution of mankind so it goes back a few years in history ;). You can visit it up close for 3 CUC, but we stayed in the carpark to take a few pictures.

#5 Hiking or biking

You can do some amazing hikes with or without a guide. The most famous one starts from hotel los Yazmines to Mogote Cafe, and is about 13 km and will take about a half-day. All the hiking tours are easily booked with your hotel or casa particular. Biking is also very fun and popular in this town. Many casas rent their own bikes, even with gears (not like the ones we rented in Malaysia 🙂 ). The price is probably around 10 CUC for 1 day.

Valley of silence

The starting point of the hike is 3 km outside of the village. You can get there easily by taxi. The tour takes about 3 hours and is approximately 5 km. We recommend going in the afternoon, so by the end of the walk, you can enjoy an amazing sunset. You can also this tour on horseback!

If you’re a big fan of caves, the cueva de san Tomas is worth a visit. A guide is obligated and you also need some condition because some are very steep. The entrance fee is 10 CUC per person, helm with light included. The guided tour is about 2 hours.

Los aquaticos

This hiking tour will take your breath away. First, a short taxi ride out of the town centre (5kms) very early in the morning. This to ensure you will be able to watch the sunrise. With no signs whatsoever you have to follow your guide to get to this community called los Aquaticos. Still, 2 families live in this remote part of Viñales. Than the return starts by walking trough the Valle Dos Hermanas, and finishing near the Mural de la Prehistoria. From here the taxi will take you back to the village. The total tour takes about 3 hours, and will cost about 15 CUC per person.

#6 Climbing

Enjoy some Cuba rock climbing in Viñales. The most famous climb is Cueva de Cabeza de la Vaca but also the most difficult one. If you are up for a challenge check out the route Esplendidos.

La Costanera is also worth visiting. La Costanera is a spectacular cathedral chamber of limestone. If it’s hot, you better take the northside walls to climb.

Ask your casa for more information they will be happy to help. Climbing gear is very hard to find in Cuba, so if you have any spare gear the Cuban climbing community will be very happy!

#7 Zip lining – canopy tour

If high and fast is your thing, Canopy Tour El Fortin is worth a visit. Our hop-on hop-off bus stopped here, but we didn’t do the ziplining. But our landlord really recommended it. We get an adrenaline rush if our daughter sleeps until 7 o’clock ;). You can also take a taxi for 5 CUC to the canopy center.

#8 Hop-on hop-off bus

Yeah, they have an hop-on hop-off bus. We ended up taking this bus a few times just to entertain Norah (and myself) and it works perfectly to visit the caves or the mirador at Hotel los Jazmines. The bus will stop for about 5 minutes so can easily jump off to take some pictures. There is only one bus (and one day the bus was broken so you have to take it as it comes), if you get off you have to wait for about 1.5 hours to get back.

The most famous cave is defenitaly Cueva de los Indios. You can take the hop-on hop-off bus that has a direct stop near the cave. Bear in mind that this cave is very touristic. You have a big restaurant, and several shops where they sell drinks and cuban artisanias. The entrance fee is 5 CUC per person. First you have to descend some stairs to arrive to the first part of the cave. It is really stunning. The second part is behind a lower part of rocks where you have to crawl under (still very doable). Here you can take a small boat to visit the underwater rivers. Very spectacular beacuse this way you exit the cave.

Best time to visit both caves is in the morning, before the tour buses arrive.

#10 Beaches

The two beaches closest to Viñales are Cayo Levisa and Cayo Jutias. After all those trips we took a break to Cayo Jutias. We were blown away by its beautiful beach! Check out our article on cayo Jutias here .

#11 Artesanías

If you are looking for some souvenirs, in Calle Ceferino Fernandez is the place to be. The street is across the bank with ATM (very convenient 🙂 ). You can buy anything here, t-shirts, cigar boxes, key chains, jewelry, pan flutes,… We bought maracas for our daughter and wonder by wonder they made it safely home.

#12 Botanical garden

We had to wait for a few hours and found this really nice botanical garden. Also, perfect to escape the heat! The entrance is free, but a gift is highly appreciated. There is a guide to show you around if you want to. The garden itself is more than 100 years old and has lots of different kinds of trees and flowers. In total more than 190 varieties. We spend an hour here without a guide, just enjoying the scenery and sitting on a bench taking some pictures of the chickens that were running around freely in the garden.

#13 Mirador – look out point

To get an amazing view, we recommend going to the mirador close to Hotel las Jazmines. Here you get a picture-perfect panoramic view of the Valley and the surrounding Sierra de Los Oreganos. We went on the hop-on-hop-off bus but you can also take your bike or a taxi.

#14 Swimming pools

Yes, there are swimming pools in Viñales :). The biggest one is in Hotel Los Jazmines , but also some other hotels or casas particulares have swimming pools. At Hotel Los Jazmines you are not obliged to stay there to use the pool, you pay a small fee per person. Another one with good reviews is Casa El Moro. If it’s a hot day you can just relax by the pool, whatever it is can wait until tomorrow. This is Cuba!

#15 Live music

Cuba without music is like a mojito without rum :). The best live music is probably at the Casa De Cultura in the main square. It most likely starts around 9 pm but you can never be sure in Cuba.

Final words

We really loved visiting Viñales. It’s the vibe and the unique things to do that make you fall in love with this place. Let’s put the kindness of the people in this cocktail, that’s what is going to want you to stay for a few days longer than you originally planned 🙂

Active Cuba with kids

Zipline Canopy adventure in Valle de los Ingenios, Trinidad. Active Cuba with kids Love travelling family

Trinidad has not only an amazing old town and great beaches nearby. If you like spending active vacation with you family and kids, you should try ziplining – canopy adventure. We (adults and two kids age 4,5) did a canopy ride with an experienced trainer.

How to get there

The best to “catch a ride” from Trinidad. You can of course get there by car, but we took a horse with a carriage, which we highly recommend, as you can see much more along the way. Plus kids loved it. More about transportation you can read in: How to travel in Cuba

Horse carriage ride from Trinidad to Zipline Canopy adventure in Valle de los Ingenios

More information about canopy adventure:

  • Total length: 1.2 km (5 stages) & height: 50 m
  • Price: kids – 5 CUC, adults: 10 CUC (check as it may change)
  • Opening hours: from 9 am to 5 pm (ask your casa owner to check it for you)
  • You get an experienced trainer to assist you
  • You don’t need to book any expensive zipline tours with any agency. Simply get here and pay for the ziplining.

Don’t miss

After ziplining don’t miss squeezing sugar cane. You can try the juice and maybe even squeezing on your own. Although the nice man showing people how to do it, doesn’t ask for any tips, be a human, squeezing sugar cane in such a heat is not sth one does for fun. Just tip.

Where to stay in Trinidad, Cuba

This time, the same as the last time we were in Cuba, we decided to stay in Casa Coky . This is one of the most beautiful casas we’ve stayed in. Owners are amazing people, food is delicious, and it has great location.

Vinales Bus Tour

Vinales is an idyllic slice of countryside in Cuba, and is the perfect place in your Cuba itinerary to retreat to after the intensity of Havana . The Vinales bus tour is a hop on hop off bus that stops at some of the best spots in the beautiful Vinales Valley . I struggled to find reliable information on the Vinales bus route, stops and times online, so pulled this post together to help other travelers.

Vinales Hop On Hop Off Bus: The Essentials

Map of bus tour of vinales.

Vinales Cuba map with hop on hop off bus stops

The map above is a fairly rough and ready map of the Vinales Valley. The little bus symbols (if you can see them!) mark the spots the bus stops at. Don’t worry if this looks like a bit of gobbly-gook – I’ll explain all the stops to you later.

Vinales Hop On Hop Off Bus Cost

If you’re visiting Vinales on a budget, then the hop on hop off bus might just be the Vinales Valley tour for you. The Vinales bus is an absolute bargain at 5 CUC per person for a one day ticket. Buy a ticket as you board the bus, and hold onto that ticket for the day. (Although there’s only one driver, so he’ll probably start to recognise you after a stop or two!)

Vinales Bus Tour Schedule and Route

Vinales Cuba hop on hop off bus route and schedule

The Vinales hop on hop off bus does a continuous 90 minute loop around the Vinales Valley, stopping off at some key sites along the way. The bus departs from Parque de Vinales (Stop 1 below) on the main street of Vinales five times per day, every 90 minutes with a break for lunch. The departure times are 9am, 10:30am, 1:30pm, 3pm and 4:30pm.

I’ve captured some of the bus stops above as at March 2019. As you’ll see, they’re looking a little dilapidated! However, they should help in planning your day in Vinales.

When I first looked at the Vinales bus map, I was a little confused about all the stops and where the bus was going. There’s 18 stops on the Vinales bus route and the names are in Spanish, which makes it a little confusing to decipher at first. (Good thing I’m here to help!)

While 18 stops seems like a lot, 6 stops are repeats (where the bus stops on the way out and back) and a few of the stops are in central Vinales town, so there will really only be a few places you want to get off.

Vinales hop on hop off bus stop 6 Hotel Los Jazmines schedule

There are three main branches to the Vinales bus tour, which pop back through town each time. This means that you can join the bus in town at several different times during its 90 minute loop.

  • Tobacco plantation, visitors centre and Hotel Los Jazmines (Stops 1 to 9)
  • Canopy zip line tour and prehistoric mural (Stops 9 to 12)
  • Another tobacco plantation and two sets of caves (Stops 12 onwards, ending back at Stop 1)

Vinales Bus Tour Tips

Stopping: The driver announces the stops as they’re approaching. Shout out if you want to get off, as the bus doesn’t always come to a physical stop at all stops.

Planning: Plan your route and stops in advance. You also need to decide how long you want to spend at those places, as the next bus will only come past 90 minutes later, or shorter if it’s one of the out and back stops. At some of the scenic stops, the bus stops for 5-10 minutes so that you can jump off quickly and snap a piccy if you don’t want to spend 90 minutes at the site.

Stops On The Vinales Hop On Hop Off Bus Tour

Here’s a quick run down of the 18 stops on the Vinales bus tour. As you’ll see, not so confusing once you understand what each stop is!

Stop 1 – Parque de Vinales (Town)

Parque Vinales, Vinales Cuba

The Vinales bus departs outside Parque de Vinales, which is Vinales plaza on the main street (above). I’d been looking out for a smaller green bus, but a massive blue Transtur bus rocked up with a teeny tiny ‘Viñales Bus Tour’ sign on the front. That’s the one you’re after!

Stop 2 – La Ernita (Hotel)

The next stop is Hotel Ernita. This stop is mainly for hotel guests. The hotel has nice views of Vinales Valley, but they don’t compare to Hotel Los Jazmines (Stop 6).

Stop 3 – Las Cubanitas (Town)

Las Cubanitas is Stop 3 on the official Vinales bus tour schedule, but was Stop 2 on our tour. Las Cubanitas is in town, so is another good place to jump on the bus, although Stop 1 is easier to find. Las Cubanitas quite possibly sells Cuban sandwiches, but don’t quote me on that one!

Stop 4 – Casa de Veguero (Tobacco Farm)

Casa de Veguero is a tobacco plantation with a tobacco drying house, where you can learn about the tobacco growing process and and buy cigars. There’s also a restaurant on site. Opening hours are 10am – 5pm.

Stop 5 – Centro de Visitantes Parque Nacionale Vinales (Visitors Centre)

The next stop is the Vinales Visitors centre, which has maps, trail information and park history. Handy if you’re planning to hike in Vinales.

Stop 6 – Hotel Los Jazmines (Hotel with Views)

Hotel Jazmines and views over Vinales Cuba

Hotel Los Jazmines has some of the best views over the Vinales Valley, along with a typically kitsch pink hotel. The hotel is only 17 minutes into the round trip, and is the first place that most people ‘hop off’. The bus stops at Los Jazmines for 5-10 minutes if you just want to snap a photo of the stunning Valle de Vinales.

We decided to make the most of the views and chillax sans crowds (as everyone else got back on the bus), and parked up at the hotel until the next bus 1.5 hours later. Hotel Los Jazmines has a small bar overlooking the valley that serves only pina coladas (no complaints here!). There’s also a small outdoor restaurant and bar next to it with a bigger menu but obstructed views. The hotel had live Cuban music playing when we visited.

Stop 7 – Centro de Visitantes Parque Nacionale Vinales (Visitors Centre)

Stop 7 is the same as Stop 5, as the bus heads back towards town.

Stop 8 – Casa de Veguero (Tobacco Farm)

Stop 8 is the same as Stop 4.

Stop 9 – Poblado de Vinales (Town)

Poblado de Vinales is another stop in Vinales town, at the west end of the main street. This would be a good spot to ‘hop on’ if you want to head straight to the canopy tour or Mural de la Prehistoria.

Stop 10 – Canopy (Adventure Activities)

Stop 10 is the Vinales canopy tour where you can soar on a zip line above the forest. The Viñales zip line tour is a relatively new attraction, and has a few zip lines of different lengths.

Stop 11 – Mural de la Prehistoria (Mural On Rocks)

Mural de la Prehistoria Vinales Cuba

Mural de la Prehistoria is (as you may have guessed) a mural showing prehistoric scenes that was painted into the rocks near Vinales in the 1960s. The mural is massive, colorful and just a little bizarre.

The bus usually stops at Mural de la Prehistoria for 5-10 minutes, which is enough time to jump out for a quick photo. It costs 3 CUC (drink included) to enter the grounds, which is a little pricey if you’re only staying a few minutes. When we visited, the bus drove into the grounds and did a loop around, but the bus windows are tinted so it would be tricky to take a photo.

If you’re not on the bus, you can stop on the side of the road shortly before the official entrance and take a photo without paying.

Stop 12 – Parque Vinales (Town)

Stop 12 is Parque Vinales, the main town square. Stop 12 is the same as Stop 1, but on the opposite side of the road.

Stop 13 – Estanco del Tabaco No 2 (Tobacco Farm)

Estanco del Tabaco No 2 is another tobacco plantation.

Stop 14 – Palenque de Los Cimarrones (Cave)

Cave bar at Palenque Los de Cimarrones Vinales Cuba

Palenque de Los Cimarrones is a cave that you can walk through, with a cave bar out the front that turns into a party cave later on the weekends. The cave is only a few hundred metres long, and costs 3 CUC to enter. The cave has some heavy history, as runaway slaves (cimarrones) fled and hid out in the cave.

As far as caves go, Palenque is not overly impressive as it’s pretty small. You’ll enjoy this if you’re after some Cuban history or, like us, want to chill out at the cave bar. Another bonus was that the cave was pretty quiet, and we encountered only a few other visitors in peak season.

Stop 15 – Cueva del Indio (Cave)

The next stop on the hop on hop off bus tour of Viñales is another cave, Cueva del Indio (the Indian Cave). The cave includes a 200m walk and a 400m boat trip through a lit cave, with a gift shop at the end. We gave this one a miss, as it didn’t really sound like our jam.

If you want to visit both Palenque Los de Cimarrones and the Cueva del Indio but didn’t want to spend 1.5 hours at each cave waiting for the next bus, you could quickly visit Palenque and then walk to the Indian Cave, which is around 2km down the road. Both caves are surrounded by beautiful countryside, so you could definitely spend longer here if you wanted to wander around.

Stop 16 – Rancho San Vincente (Hotel)

Rancho San Vincente is another hotel in a beautiful Vinales Valley location.

Stop 17 – Cueva del Indio (Cave)

Stop 17 is the same as Stop 15, as the bus heads back towards town.

Stop 18 – Palenque Los de Cimarrones (Cave)

Stop 18 is the same as Stop 14.

Stop 19 – Estanco del Tabaco No 2 (Tobacco Farm)

Stop 19 is the same as Stop 13. After Stop 19, the bus returns to Stop 1, which is Parque Vinales in the middle of Vinales town.

While the bus tour of Vinales Cuba is a cheap way of getting around, I also recommend you take a guided walking or horseback tour of Vinales Valley. A Vinales Valley tour is the best way to get right into the heart of the valley and learn about local farming life without modern machinery.

Hey there! Thanks for the nice description of the bus tour, it´s very detailed! 🙂 Just one correction: The Mural de la Prehistoria is not prehistoric. It was painted in 1961. It´s called like that because it shows a prehistoric scene 🙂

' src=

Thanks for pointing that out! Ha ha, yes I meant that it’s prehistoric style rather than that it dates to the prehistoric era. I’ll update the post for clarity.

' src=

Wow, what a fantastic article – thx thx!

Thanks so much for pulling all this info together. Will be perfect for my trip there in February. As I can’t use my US dollars, I’m trying to figure out how much in Euros to bring. From your post I have 5 CUC for the bus, 3 CUC for the mural and 3 CUC for the cave. Do you remeber what the costs were for the tobacco tours and for Indio cave? Thanks! Mary

Hi Mary! The Indio cave costs 5 CUC. For the tobacco tours, most people do a walking tour or a horseback riding tour of the tobacco and coffee plantations for 5 CUC per person per hour. Have fun in beautiful Vinales!

Thank you so much for all of these details, it will definitely help with planning our day trip to Vinales Valley in April 2022. I was a bit confused about logistics as I will be travelling with my 75 year old mom and my husband. Good to know about the hop on hop off bus. We are considering hiring a classic car tour to Vinales due to Covid and in order for our day to go to our schedule. What is the cost of the hop on hop off bus per person? Thanks again, stay Safe Raquel from Trinidad & Tobago

The Vinales hop-on-hop-off bus is a total bargain – 5 CUC per person at my last check. Enjoy!

Hello! Thanks for the details! It was perfect! We stay in Viñales and join the Bus Tour! The price is 5 Euro or Dollar cash or with Credit card (no Pesos). To pay on the bus. There are new signs. I can send you a foto if you want.

I’m glad you found it helpful! That would be great if you could send me the new signs at [email protected] . Thanks so much!

I just came across your post about the Cuba Vinales bus tour, and I couldn’t resist sharing my own experience. I took this tour last year, and it was an absolute highlight of my trip to Cuba.

The Vinales Valley is a mesmerizing place, with its stunning landscapes, lush tobacco fields, and friendly locals. The bus tour was a fantastic way to explore the area, and I was impressed by how knowledgeable our guide was. They shared fascinating insights into the region’s history, culture, and agriculture, which added a whole new layer to the experience.
