These Are the Most Popular Summer Destinations in the U.S., According to Airbnb

The top 10 include buzzy spots like Las Vegas to more under-the-radar places like Florida’s Rosemary Beach and Santa Rosa Beach.

American cities offer a wide range of summer travel adventures — and the spots travelers are seeking just might be more far-ranging than ever. According to Airbnb’s trending U.S. Destinations list , a mix of unexpected spots for outdoor adventures and beachgoers mingle with perennial favorites.

Perhaps the most expected city to make the list was year-round favorite Las Vegas. The desert getaway is no doubt a haven for those looking for any kind of summer indulgence, from lavish poolside party scenes to decadent spa retreats — and everything in between. Nearby access to the great outdoors adds to the Nevada destination’s appeal, as does the wide breadth of spectator events, from Dead & Company taking up residency at The Sphere from mid-May through mid-July to Allegiant Stadium hosting games of the much-hyped Copa America 2024 soccer tournament before the NFL season kicks off in the late summer. 

Another host city of Copa America also made the list: Glendale, Arizona. Just about 10 miles northwest of Phoenix, the desert destination has its own persona as a professional sports city, It's home to the State Farm Stadium, where the Arizona Cardinals play and where the Super Bowl has been held three times in the last 16 years . Summertime fun (and relief from the heat) can also be found in the Westgate Entertainment District , known as much for its water fountains as its shopping and eateries.

Airbnb also saw summer travelers eyeing destinations where the great outdoors dominate. Lesser known spots include the alpine city of Ouray, Colorado , known as the “Outdoor Recreation Capital of Colorado” and Quincy, Washington , which has easy access to boating and water skiing. There are also destinations like Broken Bow, Oklahoma , which is the gateway to Beavers Bend State Park, and Eugene, Oregon , at the confluence of several rivers, with plenty of hiking, like the popular Spencer Butte Trail .

A pair of state capitals are also trending, including Saint Paul, Minnesota , which is finding its footing with growing interest from travelers. After all, it’s a city that is rich in diversity (more than 100 languages are spoken) as well as plenty of summer festivals , toasting everything from beer to blues. Also on the list is Columbia, South Carolina , where a creative spirit permeates alongside a laid-back vibe, whether it's tubing on a river or catching a film at a retro Nickelodeon theater. 

Finally, two unexpected Florida beaches, both on the northwestern coast around Destin, round out the list. There’s Rosemary Beach , an elevated shore experience with cobblestone streets filled with boutiques and trendy restaurants, as well as Santa Rosa Beach , known for its nature preserves and white sand beaches.

To come up with its trending U.S. destinations for the summer, the vacation rental company looked at search data from January through March 15 for stays in June through August of 2024.

Did the host offer you a sponsor letter for you to attain the visa for your visit? We would like to stay at an airbnb but our visa application requires a specific approved letter from our hotel or a travel agnecy. Any advice would be appreciated

If you have a tourist visa, then you will have to register your hotel. If the visa is private, the locals who invited you. I'm not doing its guests private invitations, it is not profitable. I buy a travel company invitation and register their guests at them. It is easier and faster. All under the law.

Hi, isn't this only required if stay is more than 7 days for tourist? Does the owner of the airbnb apartment need to do anything on your behalf or is it just the online form that you need to present to the embassy for the visa to Russia?

Hi, do you need to register the visa if staying less than 7 days? My airbnb host said that I can fill a form out online and list her as "other" in place of the hotel and that was it. Is there more to it? thanks

You never need to register a visa...there is no such thing. Do you need to register with Migration Services? Not if there for 7 business days or fewer. This and many more questions are quite well addressed under Top Questions...

The rental platform recently discovered that the top categories booked for families lately have a waterfront theme, including Beach, Amazing Pools, and Lake categories, so their team looked to it even further and revealed the top 10 trending destinations near the water. Warning: You’ll want to double-check that your passport is up-to-date before reading any further.

• As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips .
• Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres.
• Cruises, group tours, and adults-only lodgings can also come with all-inclusive options. 

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.

I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .

Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.

Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.

I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.

Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.

Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.

I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.

Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.

Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .

Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.

Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.

Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.

Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.

Popular destinations include Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Alaska, and many travel companies take care of everything for you, essentially making it all-inclusive.

While Paris 2 , is the most searched city worldwide on Airbnb this summer, cities like Lille, Versailles, and Lyon are trending thanks to the strategic decision to host Paris 2024 throughout France 3 .  Listing page views during the Games period have been on average 11 times higher in the French host cities and their surroundings compared to the previous year 4 .

With the European Football Championships set to kick off in ten locations across Germany this June, three of the host cities Dortmund, Munich and Stuttgart have emerged as trending destinations this summer. In the US, several host cities of America’s Soccer Tournament such as Glendale, AZ, and Las Vegas, NV, are trending 5 with the tournament scheduled to kick off this June.

Families seek outdoor space and beachside stays 

Having more space to be outside is a priority for families this summer, with searches for outdoor amenities like pools and BBQs increasing by 30% for family travel 8 . With amenities like chef’s kitchens and private outdoor areas, Airbnb is the preferred choice of many families. Almost three in five guests say being able to fit all their family in one place is a major deciding factor when booking, according to a recent survey 9 . And 71% say that amenities such as kitchens, workspaces, and backyards are important when booking 10 . 

This summer, families are looking to Airbnb to hike, swim and soak up incredible views. Some of the top categories booked for families this summer have a waterfront theme, including Beach, Amazing Pools, and Lake categories. Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky’s 10-year pay package , announced in 2021, could hit $1 billion or more if the company’s share price hits certain price targets, reports Executive Editor Dennis Schaal.  

Airbnb said recently the potential value of Cheksy’s eight remaining tranches of unearned shares at the end of 2023 was $1.3 billion. However, Schaal notes it’s far from certain that Chesky will receive the shares. Airbnb awarded Chesky a pay package with 12 million restricted stock units that the company valued at $430 million in November 2020 before Airbnb’s IPO.

The potential payout would be based on whether Airbnb’s share price hits the designated thresholds as well as the actual share price on the date an earned award settles.  

Next, Europe’s largest tour operator TUI announced in February it would be offering sustainability-linked bonds . Travel Experiences Reporter Jesse Chase-Lubitz delves into whether those bonds are a step toward more sustainable tourism or a form of greenwashing.  

TUI’s sustainability-linked bonds are tied to an overall environmental target – if it misses the target, it pays a higher interest rate. The Germany-based tour operator has linked its bonds to its airline division, which is responsible for 70% of the company’s total greenhouse gas emissions. 

However, Chase-Lubitz notes some climate finance experts aren’t sold on the new instruments: They don’t have a long track record and there’s no standard for measuring progress.  An executive at a global investment bank described sustainability-linked bonds as the Wild West. 

Finally, Google is releasing new features that aim to promote greener ways of travel , writes Travel Technology Reporter Justin Dawes.

Dawes reports the new features will appear in its Maps, Search, Flights and Hotels products, adding some of those features are powered by generative artificial intelligence. Google Maps will also include features to help electric vehicle drivers locate charging stations. Dawes also notes Google’s Travel Impact Model is free to other tech companies that want to embed carbon emissions info into their websites or apps.
