Climbing the Pitons is one of the most exciting things to do on the island, but it’s not recommended to go hiking without a tour guide. Petit Piton is quite dangerous and requires previous mountaineering experience, while the Gros Piton hike is safer and requires a moderate level of physical activity.

The hike starts at the town of Soufriere and is around 3 km/2 miles long. The trail is rocky and steep in some parts – therefore, you should go with a tour guide as they know the fastest and safest way to get you to the top.

It takes at least a 1 hour 30 min drive to reach the Pitons. In case you don’t want to hike, you can visit the Pitons by bus or a minivan in a small group, or by boat . The bus ride might take up to 1 hour 45 minutes, while the boat ride lasts up to 1 hour. Some boats are large (like ferries), with little shade, so make sure you bring sunscreen and a hat .

Cruising along the coast and the Bay of Soufriere will allow you to admire the mountains from the sea, and if you want to go by bus there are several spots in Soufriere town from where you can capture great shots of the Pitons. You can drive up to the edge of the geothermal springs and see the steam coming out of the Earth, caused by the water in the springs whose temperatures reach up to 340 Fahrenheit (170 Celsius).

The water and soil are blackened due to the chemical reactions between sulfur, iron, copper, and other minerals and metals, and there are many hot pools and fumaroles all around – a truly impressive sight to see!

Sulphur Springs, St Lucia

Within a short distance downstream from the hot sulfur springs, you can enjoy the geothermal mud baths , a popular tourist attraction. 6. Pigeon Island National Park

After an approximately 25-minute drive (14 km/9 miles) toward the northwest of St. Lucia, you’ll come to Pigeon Island, a 44-acre islet and nature reserve connected to the mainland by a sandy, man-made causeway added in 1972. If you want to simultaneously enjoy the beautiful nature and learn about the history of St Lucia, this place is a must-see!

Wecome to Pigeon Island sign

Throughout history, the place was occupied by the Amerindians, pirates, French and British, mainly due to its favorable strategic position. In the second half of the 18th century, British Admiral George Rodney conquered the island and built Fort Rodney on Signal Hill, the highest peak of the island, from where he could keep an eye on the French naval base of Fort Royal on Martinique.

On top of the hill there are the military ruins and cannons open for visitors, and to get there, you need to take a 15-20-minute hike slightly uphill. It’s totally worth the effort (moderate activity level), as from the hilltop you can admire the exceptional views of the northwest coast of St Lucia and Rodney Bay.

The picture of me on Pigeon Island, St Lucia

Once you get down to the bay, you can sunbathe at two wonderful beaches of Rodney Bay, visit the Interpretation Center and learn about the history of the island, stroll through the nature reserve, or grab a bite in one of the neighboring local restaurants. Anse Chastanet is part of the Marine Reserve and you can explore the beautiful, shallow reef directly from the shore.

The beach is small, sandy and scenic, and the resort offers fascinating views of the Pitons and the volcanic mountains. The coral reef is home to a wide variety of tropical fish, while the ocean bottom houses sponges and gorgonian forests.

You can visit the place by boat (most of the snorkeling tours stop here), by car/on a land tour . There is also a nice beach restaurant where you can delight in the local St Lucian specialties while taking in the views of the Pitons.

Nearby, toward Pigeon Island, there is a Pigeon Island public beach , another beautiful spot you can check out.

Reduit Beach

La Toc beach – Nestled south of the Castries, within a 10-15 minute drive from St Lucia port, La Toc public beach is a beautiful sandy beach offering all necessary facilities for a memorable beach day in St Lucia. You can access the beach through the Sandals Resort and although located near the town, La Toc Beach is not that busy.

Anse Chastanet – Besides being an amazing snorkeling spot, Anse Chastanet is also a popular beach and a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the towns. It is located near the town of Soufriere, consists of several upscale resorts, and is connected to Anse Mamin via a walking trail.

Anse Mamin is another secluded sandy beach located up north. It’s an ideal place for a family picnic, as it’s less crowded than other beaches.

Marigot Bay – Situated on the western coast of St Lucia, a 30-minute drive from Castries cruise port, Marigot Bay is a magnificent natural harbor with deep, crystal clear water and several beautiful, sugar-white beaches. Surrounded by densely forested hills from three sides, Marigot Bay boasts luxurious hotels, beach resorts , sophisticated restaurants, and a multitude of picturesque yachts, catamarans, and boats moored in its marina.

The bay served as a setting for several Hollywood movies and has become popular worldwide. The bay also had an important role in the history of St Lucia, as it served as a battleground between French and British navies.

Marigot Bay in St Lucia cruise port

Grande Anse – Located around a 40-minute drive from the port of Castries, Grande Anse is a charming, secluded beach located on the eastern coast of Saint Lucia. If you are searching for lush nature, mountainous sceneries and peace, Grande Anse is a perfect spot. People come here to see the turtles, as the beach is a popular leatherback sea turtle nesting ground and turtles often come out of the water.

Jalousie (Sugar) Beach – If you seek the best views of the Pitons while swimming in the St Lucian crystal clear waters, Jalousie Beach (also known as Sugar Beach) is the top choice! Tucked in Pitons Bay, between Petit Piton and Gros Piton, the beach offers powdery, white sands, and a great snorkeling experience (it is part of St Lucia Snorkel Marine Reserve).

The beach features several resorts and restaurants backed by stunning volcanic and mountainous landscapes. It takes a 1-hour 30-minute drive to get to Jalousie Beach from Port Castries.

9. St Lucia Adventure Parks

If you look for an adrenaline rush and a one-of-a-kind St Lucian experience, head over to one of the two top-rated adventure parks on the island: Treetop Adventure Park , located around a 1-hour drive from the cruise port, or Morne Coubaril Historical Adventure Park , situated near the Pitons and Sulphur Springs, a 1 h 30-minute drive from Castries.

Explore the island’s rainforests via aerial tram and zipline and hike through the lush tropical forests. Zipline over the historic estate and banana plantations with breathtaking views of the Pitons and Sulphur Springs, or take a horseback ride into the volcano!

Land & Sea Tour on the NCL Epic February 2020

My parents and i paid ~$110 via the NCL website to book this excursion during our stop in St. Lucia. It started promptly at 9a and we got back to the boat right on time at 5p. This excursion was amazing. The first two hours were the Land portion, riding around in an air conditioned passenger bus with plenty of stops for trinket purchases and learning about the island. Around 12p we stopped at a learning site where we had an INCREDIBLE lunch of chicken, fish and rice laid out on a buffet. The staff could not have been more friendly. After lunch we walked around the property and learned about how important coconuts were to the property and other amazing tidbits. After leaving the property we drove to the dock to get on the very nice and expansive catamaran. The buses held about 12 people and we met up with all of the buses on the catamaran - about 100 people. On the boat we spent about 1.5 hours sailing back to the cruise port from the opposite side of the island, and were treated to incredible views and plenty of rum punch. This excursion was the best excursion i've ever taken, and Precious was an incredible tour guide! 10/10 recommend.

We arranged private transportation to and from Airport for six and couldn't be more happy with the service and overall experience, Edan was our driver and we were promptly met outside of the airport to head to our hotel. We enjoyed cold drinks and great conversation with Edan during our trip and he was always making sure we were OK all throughout the journey. He answered many questions and made a few accommodations for us. The same was had during our return trip back to the airport. An overall great trip and Edan made it a great experience for us. Thank you Edan and look forward to seeing you when we return back to your amazing island!

We rented a car and got great service, the people were very helpful and nice. Their prices were the best we found on the island.

We couldn't have asked for a more perfect experience! Chris, our tour guide and amazing photographer, made the day a blast! He promptly picked us up at our resort and was extremely friendly right front the start. He talked to us about the history of the island as well as many of the cultural traditions of the locals. Our first stop was at a beautiful overlook where we met a couple locals who made my fiancé and I a rose and grasshopper made from palm leaves. Chris explained to us that the locals view green grasshoppers as good luck. From there we visited the fishing village where he gave us great insight to the history of the village. We also stopped at a banana farm to sample the delicious St. Lucian bananas. Chris then took us to the Cassava bread sampling where he walked us through the entire process of making the cassava. The chocolate chip bread was delicious! Next, he took us to beautiful view of the Pitons. He was an excellent photographer and took pictures that we will cherish forever. Continuing on, he drove us safely and comfortably through the windy roads to the Toraille Waterfall and the Botanical Gardens. At the botanical gardens we had a guide accompany us and gave us a very informative tour of all the different flowers and greenery the island has to offer. Finally we ended our tour with a surprise for my now fiancé with a beach proposal on Anse Mamin beach. Mora was exceptional with planning the proposal with me down to the tiniest details. She was so attentive and kind during the whole process that I did not worry for a minute about proposing abroad. Mora, and the team, did an absolute beautiful job with the set up of 4 messages in bottles along the beach to be found and opened by my fiancé which were surrounded by her favorite seashells and draped in our colors. After the last bottle was opened and read, they set up a perfect path of seashells that formed a heart with two lit tiki torches draped in our colors of purple and blue. Chris again took professional pictures and videos of the big moments. We can't thank them enough for the flawless day! After she said yes, Mora gave her a beautiful bouquet of flowers and ice cold Champagne to celebrate. Lastly before our drive home we ate at the Anse Chastanet restaurant on the beach. I highly recommend Discover Soufriere for any tour and if you are thinking about proposing in St. Lucia, Mora is the one to go to. She will make sure your day as special and perfect as it should be. Thanks to Chris, Mora, and the team for your amazing assistance and execution on such a special day to us. My fiancé and I fell in love with St. Lucia and will forever have a special place in our hearts because of you.

Loved this tour and it was the highlight of our entire trip. The driver picked us up from our hotel, there were several stops on the way which was so nice. We stopped at the banana plantation, the Marigot bay which was overlooking the hills and ocean, souffriere- Tet Paul trail which was a fairly easy hike. I had taken my 16 month old and worn him in a carrier so definitely doable with a baby as long as you use some type of baby carrier. The guide Denver was amazing and helped carry my son and ran up to the shelter when the rain came down. The views of the pitons from up above was breathtaking. You must see in person, we caught some great views with double rainbows during our trip. Other family members of mine did the mud bath and loved it. We got tired by the end so we skipped the waterfall. The ride can be long and bumpy depending on your hotel stay so make sure you have gravol with you. I really enjoyed this tour and would highly recommend it.

Amazing! Our driver Alton was so helpful and really nice. Definitely recommend this. The scenery was gorgeous and the mud bath was an experience to definitely try while here in st Lucia.

Essential guide for cruisers to St Lucia (Castries port): where ships dock and terminals. The top things to do, the beaches and day-passes, what's within walking distance, shopping, and basics.

By: Editor-in-Chief Update: May 30, 2023

The primeval Pitons are one of the most famous natural marvels of the tiny island-nation of Saint Lucia. The scenic landmark is a must-see on a cruise to St Lucia. But the cruise traveler will only have a glimpse of this natural wonder if booked on a shore excursion.

Although the Pitons can only be visited on a full-day cruise excursions, the good news is that there are so many other scenic sites, landmarks, attractions, and activities to experience in St Lucia that cruise travelers visiting the island will always find something exciting to do and see.

The beaches are stunning and relatively close to the cruise port in Castries. Natural attractions such as the Sulfur Springs (a dormant volcano), the Diamond Falls , or the National Rain Forest are sights to behold. Horseback riding, sailing, scuba diving, snorkeling, or jet skiing are just a few of the many thrilling activities you can experience on a cruise to St Lucia.

Where cruise ships dock in St Lucia

There are two main piers (and Terminals) in St Lucia's main cruise port, which is located on a very nice bay next to Castries - the main city and capital of the island. The Pointe Seraphine Cruise Port Terminal is on the northern side of the bay and La Place Carenage Cruise Port Terminal is right downtown Castries.

Pointe Seraphine is around a 1 mile north of Castries. A leisurely walk along the waterfront to the center of Castries will not take more than 20-minutes.

Pointe Seraphine Terminal

Although the bay is wide enough to accommodate large ships, mega cruise ships like Queen Mary II may have to anchor outside the bay. Anchoring ships will transport passengers on their own tender boats to La Place Carenage Cruise Terminal.

Top things to do and see in St Lucia

Cruise travelers that enjoy mother nature's travails should not miss a visit to the famed Pitons although a tour and trekking of this emblematic wonder of St Lucia may take up to 6 hours.

Parks and Gardens

Less time consuming, a visit to the Diamond Botanical Gardens and Falls is a must. This six-acre retreat is an invitation to walk through lush tropical vegetation, bird watching or bathing in the mineral waters of the spa. The main attraction of the Diamond Gardens is the 17 meters high waterfall. The Diamond Botanical Gardens Website has great information about this highlight of St Lucia.

The Sulfur Springs Park , where you will have the unreal opportunity to visit a dormant volcano, is another must do and see in St Lucia. Besides the boiling springs, do not miss the waterfalls and hot water bathing pools – Black Water Pool and Pool of Love. For more information check the Sulfur Springs Park Website .

Besides the already mentioned landmarks in Castries (within walking distance) both terminals are close to other attractions, in particular, for those looking forward to spending some time basking in the sun.

Cruise tip: all beaches in St. Lucia are open to the public. However, be aware that nude and topless sunbathing is illegal.

Vigie Beach is the closest to Castries (just under 2 miles north). Although the Editor has walked there from Pointe Seraphine it is a stretch in the sun and a taxi shouldn't cost more than US$10 each way (per trip up to four people).

The same fare (US$10.00) is also how much a taxi should charge to go take you to La Toc Beach , the other beach close by - 3 miles south of St Lucia cruise port in Castries.

Along the northern west coast, there are a few other wonderful beaches such as Choc Beach (20-minute taxi ride), Reduit Beach (on Rodney Bay) and Pigeon Island Beach (between US$20.00 and US$30.00 each way by taxi).

Photo of Reduit Beach in Saint Lucia

Reduit Beach, St. Lucia

Undoubtedly, Reduit Beach is the most popular - the scenery, sand, water clarity and many activities offered are major attractions for the cruise traveler. And also the proximity to the Rodney Bay Marina (with a few nice restaurants), the Splash Island Water Park which is great for families and the Bay Bay Gardens Resort offering a beach day pass.

Photo of Marigot Bay in Saint Lucia

Marigot Bay

Marigot Bay (just under 10 miles south) is another very popular beach destination in St. Lucia. The scenery is spectacular but cruise travelers should be aware that the beach is small and can get crowded easily.

Beach club days passes

Therefore you should look into booking a day pass at the Marigot Beach Club. A few miles south, on the off the beaten track Anse Cochon Bay, the Ti Kaye Resort & Spa offers a memorable luxury Day Pass.

Here is a list of links to the best beach club day-passes in St Lucia:

What's in downtown Castries and close by

Cruise travelers interested in exploring historical landmarks will find a few sites in Castries worth a visit. The Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, usually referred to as “The Cathedral” is 200 ft long (61 m) by 100 ft wide (30 m) and said to be the largest church in the Caribbean. A visit to the interior of the cathedral should not be missed.

The Cathedral is located on another major landmark of Castries - the Walcott Square. This square is, in fact, a quaint garden with wonderful trees, a bandstand and a bust of Derek Walcott , the St Lucian poet, play-writer and Nobel Prize winner after whom the square was renamed in 1993. Ironically, the square is named after a man that was not at all happy with the touristic development of St Lucia island.

Don't expect to see or discover much more in Castries close to the Cruise Terminals but do not miss a walking exploration of the town as it can be enjoyed before or after spending some time on a tour or on one of the many beaches close by.

Photo of La Toc Battery in Saint Lucia Castries

La Toc Battery, Castries

Other landmarks such as the La Toc Battery, the St Marks Colonial House or Governors House are relatively close by but not really within walking distance - if these are in your plans you should hire a taxi or book a tour of the highlights of Castries.

Shore excursions (Shorex) and local tours

Obviously, all cruise lines offer many and diverse shore excursions in Saint Lucia. Celebrity Cruises offers as many 22 shore excursions ranging between $23.99 and $254; and Royal Caribbean has 43 cruise excursions . Carnival lists 17 shore excursions . Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has available 22 shore excursions . Oceania Cruises organizes 49 shore excursions , Holland America offers 18 cruise excursions , and Princess has 26 excursions available.

Besides the cruise excursions organized by cruise lines, there are also shore excursions and tours offered by the following reputable private online services:

Photo of Harry Edwards Shop at Pointe Seraphine Terminal in Castries Saint Lucia

Harry Edwards Shop

Many savvy cruisers argue that the Pointe Seraphine Terminal has better shops than the La Place Carenage Terminal. And, in fact, the cruise traveler will find more stores at the former but also greater diversity in this terminal. For sure you will find the typical duty-free shops selling Perfumes, Jewelry and Watches ubiquitous all over the Caribbean Islands - the likes of Colombian Emeralds, Diamonds and Tanzanite International - but also Harry Edwards that is exclusively Saint Lucian.

Photo of Tanzanite International Shop at Pointe Seraphine Terminal in Castries, Saint Lucia

Tanzanite International Shop

An art gallery must be mentioned for selling watercolors and prints by Llewelyn Xavier - the most famous Artist in St. Lucia. There are also better and more souvenir shops at the Point Seraphine Terminal, and even a few crafts are available but the Market in Castries is still the best place to go if looking for handmade local souvenirs. If docked at La Place Carenage, and considering that this terminal also has quite a few good stores, you really have to be a serious shopaholic to walk all the way to Pointe Seraphine or cross the bay by water taxi.

Photo of Street Vendor in Saint Lucia Castries

Street Vendor in Castries

In one word: the best shopping in St. Lucia is found in both Terminals and in the Crafts Market in Castries. Tobacco, spirits, and liquors are some of the best buys in St. Lucia. Among the most famous local produced items, silk-screened fabrics and clothing are a must, in particular, the batik prints handmade by Bagshaws studio and Caribelle Batik.

One of the nicest aspects of calling on a cruise to St Thomas is that the island is both safe and very easy to explore. Cruise ships offer excellent tours but if you wish to explore the island on your own the taxi services are very good alternatives.

NCL Excursion Reviews

When I was deciding on what excursions to take on my upcoming cruise, I found it so helpful to read the reviews on NCL's website. Some excursions that sounded great had some terrible reviews and others enlightened me that it might be an hour catamaran ride followed by a 45 minute bus ride to get to a particular place (something I wouldn't be interested in).

One thing I did notice is that most excursions only had a few reviews (maybe a few had 10 or more but that was the minority).

Considering the thousands of people who take excursions, I was surprised that there weren't more reviews.

To those who post them, thank you. And if you do take a ship-sponsored trip, I would love to read about your experience. It really helps especially with the high cost involved for most of them.

I am a "Top 10" shoreex reviewer on NCL.com. The majority of the reviews that I have done over the years are no longer on the NCL website. I've never tied to figure out how it all works.

I had originally assumed that between seasons, tours were removed from the website when they were no longer offered. Then when the cruise line contracts with a tour provider for the next season, they were created with no reviews. Now I just don't know.

All I can say is that there were many more reviews written than what you find on the web site.

You would be shocked at how many posters just walk aimlessly around the ports and don't venture further...so no reviews needed

Many just take a cab to the beach...which is a perfect thing to do in the Carib...so no reviews

Something to remember is that when booking an ncl excursion....you are basically using the same operators that you would book if booking on your own

Price notwithstanding....it is quite likely that you won't even be able to book a particular say snorkel excursion on your own in many case as ncl has already booked the boats for their excursions

When you can find a private snorkel excursion the prices are usually very high but you are getting more time

While you can dig around to find one I myself have found it easier to do certain excursions through the ship

Fwiw the last thing I want or need is a bus tour of an island. If I book ncl tours I want snorkeling or I can just grab a cab to a beach....which btw in a place like st kitts will also get you a stop on a mountaintop to see the monkeys and where the Atlantic and Carib meet.

Any taxi driver worth their salt in st kitts knows to stop there if you are going to that part of the island

99% of the time I am cruising solo so I only take NCL excursions because I don't feel comfortable jumping in a taxi alone.

I love going to the beach and for my upcoming cruise, I was about to book a certain beach excursion when I decided to read the reviews. Most of them talked about how rocky the beach was, lots of seaweed and how the local vendors refused to leave you alone. Not my idea of fun so I nixed the idea.

Fortunately by continuing to read additional reviews, I found the perfect beach trip.

I submitted a review of an excursion in Tangier that was a bit critical - NCL never published it.

Check out the ports of call you are visiting here on CC you will get more info than you will ever find on NCL's web site. Or any one ships web site.

Or check out Trip advisor.

The posted ones are approved by NCL so not everything gets posted.

That's too bad because I would think it would help others make an informed decision. I've also written some critical (yet honest) reviews and have had both my positive and negative ones published.

I don't actually believe you would be solo in a taxi to the beach anyway.

They usually wait until the van is full or semi full and then try to agree on a pick up time at the beach for the group

That's been our experience anyway

We get in taxi...with others whom we do not know...but who usually are agreeable to whatever beach the group wants....although you can go to any beach you want but the dispatchers know to group riders by beach preference....then....

Upon drop off at the beach the group usually agrees to a pick up time....as no one wants to miss the ship

Its all very civilized and easy

The group can agree to make sure they locate you before they leave just to be sure you don't miss the ride back

No need to stay with them at the beach but honestly just agree to meet up at agreed upon time

All pax have the same concerns so you will be ok doing this IMHO

I have to debate the NCL sanctioned excursions. Coming off the Getaway back in the end of April, this was the first time I booked third party excursions (and one NCL) for this trip. And to be honest, I did a lot of reading here (CC) and with TripAdvisor to select my excursions. The cost savings is substantial when you are a family; (I had two adults and two kids). Every NCL excursion was a budget buster and I saved at least close to $200 per excursion going third party. Each one had absolute assurances to make sure you didn't miss your boat. Many rely on reviews to maintain their business model and they know we (Americans) like to speak our mines so many won't risk a bad review.

I did Cozumel (last port) on NCL as a "last minute" selection since we had nothing planned. The cost was the highest of all the excursions.

Do your homework and have confidence that there are plenty of good third party excursions out there.

Hope this helps.

Don't forget to join your roll call and go to the Meet & Greet! Most people on the roll call have already researched/arranged independent tours (many based on Trip Advisor reviews and are looking for people to round out their groups. If the groups are full, you can contact the tour operator directly about starting another group.

We have never done a ship-operated tour, most because they are so expensive, and the groups are always sooo large! On private tours, you have smaller groups/buses, so it is easier and faster to get around/stay ahead of the ship tours.

On our most recent cruise, we met up with a couple from our M&G. The husband would go ashore as soon as the ship was cleared, survey all the tour operators selling tours, and then negotiate a price for a group of us (made up of M&G'ers and other people we met on the cruise). We ended up saving a ton of money on these private excursions, and the service was often better because the companies are smaller and more reliant on good reviews on sites such as TA.

Last three posts = great suggestions!

Has this not changed in the last 6-years?  Still no way to post a tour review (I just poked around for 20 minutes and couldn't figure it out)?  The descriptions on their reviews leaves MUCH to be desired (ex. recent "7 hour tour including Mayan ruins etc"....but 6 of it is BUS transport time).

I guess as the seller (and profiter), they are likely not going to want any negative reviews so I suppose I am not surprised, but I never realized they were so curated.

Happycrafter123

I really wish there were reviews posted for the NCL excursions too.  Upcoming Baltic cruise, and I’ve compared prices with other tour operators, when factoring in the free at sea discount, it really is about the same price give or take a couple dollars as going with non-NCL operators, but not sure of the quality, and really don’t like the risk of missing boat….

Best bet is to search in the port of call forums. That's where you'll get unfiltered and honest opinions on the best (and worst) cruise-sponsored tours, as well as options for ones found via Viator or private companies.
