We’d all rather look well-groomed while traveling. However, any traveler is familiar with the headache of opening your suitcase only to find all your clothes limp and wrinkled.

The most convenient tool for addressing this problem is the travel iron. This handy tool is specially designed to fit in your suitcase and is powerful enough to keep you looking tidy. Choosing the best travel iron can be intimidating, but we will guide you through the whole process.

It’s important to know what to look for when you are setting out to buy a travel iron. Perhaps your foremost consideration will be the size and weight of the iron in order to maximize your luggage storage space.

But there are several other factors to keep in mind, including the iron’s power and heat control. Let’s dig a little deeper into these aspects.

Weight and Size

Travel iron weight and size

One of the biggest advantages travel irons have over regular ones is their weight. Made to be easily portable in your luggage, they weigh significantly less than regular irons. Look for an iron that weighs approximately 1 pound .

As for size, a travel iron is built to fit perfectly into your suitcase or travel bag. This convenient tool’s dimensions typically vary from 6 to 8 inches in length.

Ease of Use

Travel iron ease of use

When it comes to a travel iron’s ease of use, there are a couple of things you should be aware of. First, take a good look at the handle and see if it looks comfortable . A functional handle will go a long way in making your iron usable. Second, the best travel irons include motion-sensitive technology, helping you iron faster and with greater precision.

On top of that, there are some really interesting additional features you can look out for, like anti-drip or water-spraying features, both of which contribute to overall ease of use when it comes to ironing.

Heat Control

Travel iron heat control

If you’re looking at an iron without the option to control the heat level, think again. Any travel iron on your shortlist should have this ability. You don’t want to iron synthetic clothes with the same level of heat as cotton clothes.

Hot Tip: Look for an iron that has printed indicators on the swivel that denote exactly what each level is for.

If you are traveling to a different country, look for an iron with dual voltage . You will likely be dealing with different voltages, which can render your travel iron useless.

If you plug your iron into a higher voltage source, you run the risk of frying it.

Similarly, power is an important consideration when choosing a travel iron. Simply speaking, more powerful irons are made for heavier clothes or fabrics that are hard to iron. So, choose wisely, and if you plan on straightening heavier clothes like hoodies or jeans, find a 1,000-watt iron that can handle the job .

On the other hand, lighter clothes like t-shirts and shorts will not require a powerful iron.

Portability

Travel iron portability

Weigh the portability of your travel iron against its power output. You don’t want to have to make room for a huge iron in your suitcase at the expense of something else.

Most travel irons are specially designed to ensure maximum portability, but it’s still something to consider.

Full Review of the Top 6 Irons for Travel Available on the Market

With all the options available out there, finding the right travel iron can be a bit tricky. To help you with this process, here are brief overviews of the top options you can find out there!

1.  Rowenta DA1560 Pro Compact Steam Iron

Let’s start with one of the most reliable travel irons out there and our overall top pick. The Rowenta travel iron strikes an excellent balance between power and space efficiency, all while coming with several travel-friendly features. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for a small travel iron.

For starters, the iron features a stainless steel soleplate, which ensures excellent heat conduction through its 1,000 watts of power.

Besides dry ironing, the Rowenta is also great at steaming. It features a 2-ounce tank in addition to 200 micro steam holes. You can adjust the steaming between bursts and continuous steaming. It also has a vertical steaming option for added convenience.

The Rowenta is also a dual voltage travel iron, which you can adjust directly on the iron for a hassle-free conversion.

The iron comes with an ergonomic handle that you can fold when not in use for easier storage and packing.

Additionally, the iron comes with a travel pouch to keep it secure in one place as well as a one-year limited warranty for a worry-free purchase.

  • High wattage and adjustable temperature to work with a variety of fabrics
  • Adjustable steaming modes, including vertical steaming mode
  • Dual-voltage feature for reliability while traveling
  • A bit pricey

2.  Conair EZ Press Hand-Held Steam Iron

The Conair EZ Press Steam Iron is a mighty option to consider if you’re looking for powerful yet reasonably-priced iron.

With 800 watts of power, the handheld iron heats up pretty quickly and you can adjust the temperature to work with various fabrics. It also features a stainless steel soleplate made from stainless steel for easy gliding over garments.

The iron also has a continuous steam knob in addition to a steam burst button to flatten tough wrinkles. The only caveat here is that the water reservoir is a bit small, but can be enough for a quick session.

One of the clever features of this iron is the anti-slip heels that allow you to set it upright without tipping over.

Similar to the Rowenta, this one also comes with dual voltage options to use it comfortably anywhere.

  • Lightweight yet sturdy iron
  • Heat up quickly and reaches a decently high temperature
  • Features an 8-foot long cord for reliability
  • The water tank is a bit small

3.  Sunbeam Hot-2-Trot Travel Iron

Next up, we have an excellent travel iron to consider if you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a travel iron, but still want a decent option.

Similar to the Conair EZ Press, the SunBeat Hot-2-Trot delivers up to 800 watts of power, which allows it to heat up quickly. You can also adjust the iron’s heat through a handy temperature controls dial, although not the highest on the list.

The iron is also easy to use and features a smooth non-stick soleplate for easy gliding over the garments while ironing.

The ongoing steam feature on the travel iron allows you to use it vertically or horizontally. However, its steam burst feature isn’t as powerful as others, which is one of its few drawbacks, besides being a little heavier in comparison to other handheld options.

One the plus side though, this iron has a fairly large water tank, which saves you the hassle of refills. It also comes with a one-year limited warranty for added reliability.

  • Best option for buyers on a strict budget
  • Switches voltages easily
  • Large water reservoir for long sessions
  • The water tank may leak if you overfill it

4.  DenniesCare Portable Steam Iron

If you’re all about size and portability, this one might be a good option to consider. The DenniesCare compact steam iron is one of the tiniest options on the market that doesn’t skimp on power and features.

Despite being only 1.1 lbs, the 700-watt iron can heat up in seconds and you can adjust its temperature easily through a control dial to optimize it depending on the fabric you’re working on.

The iron has a 2.7-ounce tank that allows you to use it as a steamer in less than half a minute. It also has a steam burst feature for added reliability. However, the iron will leak water if you use the steamer before it reaches the maximum temperature.

One of the few drawbacks of this highly compact option is that it comes with a relatively short power cord. This can be a little inconvenient in some situations, although this makes it a little easier to pack, so it highly depends on your personal preferences here.

  • Incredibly lightweight and a small size
  • Reliable steam function with burst feature
  • Large removable water tank for easy refills
  • The iron’s cord is quite short

5.  Sharper Image SI-755 Mini Steam Iron

Next up, we have the Sharper Image SI-755, which is an overall nice package that comes at a fair price.

One of the favorite features of this iron is its weight, as it only weighs 0.98 lbs, which makes it the lightest travel iron on the list.

The iron is also easy to use, thanks to its nonstick plate that glides easily over fabrics. It also has a steaming feature and comes with a measuring cup to fill up the water with a 1.2-ounce water tank.

The only drawback here is that this iron has only 350 watts of power, so it takes up to a minute to heat up instead of a few seconds. This makes it an affordable option if you don’t mind the wait.

  • Features various temperature and garment steamer settings to suit many fabrics
  • Compact size and ergonomic design that can stand vertically when not in use
  • Equipped with a dual voltage switch
  • Takes some time to heat up

6.  Conwang Dry/Wet Travel Steam Iron

Last but not least, if you want a highly versatile iron that also doubles as a steamer, you shouldn’t look further than the Conwang travel iron.

This one packs some serious power under the hood, as its wattage is the highest on the list, with up to 1,100 watts! This doesn’t only mean quick heat-up time, but also reliable performance.

The iron features a scratch-resistant ceramic soleplate, which provides even heat across its surface while being easy gliding over fabrics for a smooth performance.

The iron also comes with plenty of convenient features, but the most reliable one here is the steamer mode. You can rotate the iron 90 degrees to turn it into a full-blown steamer.

The only drawback here is that it lacks a dual-voltage mode, so it’s only suitable for flights across North America.

  • Turns into a vertical steamer
  • Powerful iron that heats up fully in seconds
  • Evenly distributed heat across its ceramic soleplate
  • Lacks a dual voltage mode

Things to Look for While Buying a Travel Iron

While you’re shopping for a mini travel iron, there are several features and essential aspects that you need to keep in mind. In this section, we’ll take a closer look at them.

Power

The power of iron is usually measured in watts. The higher the wattage, the faster the iron heats up and the higher the temperature it can reach, which allows you to work with a wider range of fabrics.

Ideally, you should go for a travel iron of 600 to 1,000 watts for reliable performance. On the other hand, options with lower wattage are usually lighter but can take up to 90 seconds to heat up, so you should only consider them if you don’t mind the wait.

Heat Settings

Most irons come with an adjustable heat system, which allows you to adjust the temperature depending on your needs.

For example, if you mainly work with cotton, linen, or denim, you’ll need a powerful iron with a high wattage setting.

On the other hand, if you work with delicate or synthetic fabrics like silk or polyester, you’ll need a low-temperature mode. A good iron will feature an accurate control dial to optimize the temperature accordingly.

Portability

A good travel iron must save you a lot of storage space while packing, so you should always consider the iron’s portability and compactness while buying it.

Make sure that the iron doesn’t weigh more than 1.5 lbs and fits within a small spot in your luggage.

A massive bonus here would be going for foldable options that you can store in even smaller spaces when not in use.

A dry iron can be quite effective at pressing clothes to remove wrinkles, but it might not do much against tough ones, and that’s where the steam comes in handy!

In addition to removing tough wrinkles, powerful steam also kills odor-causing bacteria, which helps in keeping your clothes fresh for longer.

Ideally, you should look for a travel iron with a continuous steam feature, which you can use horizontally or vertically as a steamer.

Bigger water tanks mean larger iron, but it also saves you the hassle of frequent refills. A good balance here would be around 1.5 to 3 ounces.

Dual Voltage

Dual voltage is another remarkable feature to consider having in your travel iron. While some countries have their electricity voltage set at 110-120V like the US, many other countries have their voltage set at 220-240V.

Using devices at the incorrect voltage can damage them irreversibly, so it’s always a good plus to have a device with dual voltage.

This means that you can flip a switch on the device to change its voltage to the corresponding country. That being said, you can ditch this feature if you only travel internally.

When handling hot irons, safety features are always a major consideration. To prevent any burns or fires, you should aim for an iron with auto shut-off and temperature control settings.

Auto shut-off turns the device off after it hasn’t been used for some time, while the temperature control setting allows you to set the optimal temperature for the type of fabric being ironed.

These features are not only convenient but also add an extra layer of security when travelling with your iron.

Value for Money

The cost of a travel iron should be considered. Generally, cheaper models tend to lack features like temperature control or dual voltage.

That being said, you don’t have to break the bank for an efficient device either; there are plenty of great value for money irons available in the market that come with all the necessary features.

Best Travel Iron: Wrapping Up

This marks the end of today’s guide that shows you everything you need to know about travel irons and what to look for in the search for the best iron for you.

As you can see, there are several great options out there. However, if you’re looking for a reliable recommendation, you should consider the  Rowenta DA1560 Pro .

While it’s a bit pricier than others, it’s incredibly powerful, features a dual-voltage switch, and has a foldable handle.

However, if you’re looking for a more affordable option that still gets the job done, the  Sunbeam Hot-2-Trot  would be an excellent pick for you.

It’s also traveler-approved, as one adventurer shared, “I travel constantly for work and wanted to get an iron that I could travel with that wouldn’t weigh my bag down. This one does an amazing job both ironing and steaming my work shirts and trousers.”

I also really like the downy wrinkle releaser. I took it with me on a school trip and it worked well enough to get by; not to mention it was easy to carry. I have never considered a travel iron before. I have considered purchasing a travel steamer but never commit due to the varying reviews. Would you recommend an iron over a steamer?

alex

Hi Bety, personally I prefer a steamer but some travelers like using an iron. It really depends on personal preference ?

The Bottom Line

Our testing process, what to know about irons before shopping, other steam irons we tested, your questions, answered, what is bhg recommends.

Better Homes & Gardens / Dera Burreson

Whether you're headed to a wedding, picking out clothes for work, or you simply didn't get your laundry hung up in time, having an iron that effectively erases wrinkles can keep your clothes looking crisp and clean while helping you make a great first impression.

The best steam irons heat up quickly, offer multiple settings to accommodate a variety of materials, and are easy to maneuver. Added features like auto-shutoff settings, anti-drip soleplates, and retractable plugin cords are also helpful.

We put some of the best steam irons to the test to determine which ones are actually worth buying. Our expert home testers purchased and used 30 different steam irons in our lab in Des Moines, Iowa, putting each one through its paces on materials like cotton, linen, and satin.

In addition to testing the iron's functionality, we noted its design (Is it too big? Too heavy? Does the handle get hot when in use?) and portability to choose our favorites.

Best Overall

Black+decker light 'n easy compact steam iron.

  • Effectiveness 4.5 /5
  • Design 4 /5
  • Portability 4.5 /5

During our tests, this steam iron removed wrinkles and deep creases from satin and cotton in one pass.

There's no way to tell when this iron has reached the desired temperature.

If you want an iron that efficiently rids your clothes of wrinkles without having to splurge on an expensive appliance, this option from Black+Decker is a great choice. Though it has many of the same features as the pricier irons we tested, the Light 'N Easy iron is a lot less expensive while still acting as a time-saving solution to wrinkly fabric.

When testing, our experts found that the Light 'N Easy iron worked best on satin and cotton, removing wrinkles in just one pass. Deeper creases took a few tries to remove, though the process was still relatively effortless. Even on linen, our testers found that the iron could get rid of wrinkles easily (though deep creases were still slightly visible).

You'll be able to change the temperature settings using a dial on the iron's handle, which corresponds to a chart printed below the handle. This allows you to adjust the temperature according to the material you're working with, making it easy to iron a whole load of laundry at once.

We also loved how large this steam iron's water tank is, meaning you don't have to add more water during a long ironing session. The steam feature automatically adjusts the amount of steam it produces based on the setting you select, allowing for the right combination of heat and moisture. Plus, its automatic shutoff feature—which turns off the machine eight minutes after use when upright and after 30 seconds when facedown or on its side—provides added peace of mind.

Given its low price point, we weren't surprised to find that the Light 'N Easy iron feels a bit cheap compared to other models. There's no way to tell if the iron has reached its desired temperature, which we found frustrating, and deciphering some of the symbols on the iron was a challenge for our testers.

Best Splurge

Rowenta perfect pro station iron.

  • Effectiveness 4.6 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Portability 4.8 /5

This iron's detachable water tank holds up to 37 ounces of water and filters out calcium to prevent buildup on your iron.

There's no indicator to tell you when the iron has reached the desired temperature.

If doing the laundry frequently includes ironing wrinkles out of clothing, tablecloths, or other fabrics, the Rowenta Perfect Pro iron is a great investment. While it's more expensive than other models, we found it to be exceptionally capable of cutting through deep wrinkles on multiple fabric types.

The most notable feature on the Perfect Pro iron is its extra-large water tank, which doubles as a docking station when you're not using the iron. If you tend to spend a large chunk of time ironing, the 37-ounce water tank allows you to keep working longer (up to 90 minutes) without having to stop and refill.

Plus, the separate tank keeps the iron itself quite lightweight and easy to use while offering powerful steam capabilities.

During testing, our experts found that this steam iron was quite versatile; it performed well on linen, cotton, and satin napkins with similar effectiveness. While it took a few passes across each fabric to flatten the wrinkles, we found it to be a pretty quick and easy job.

Similar to other Rowenta irons, the Perfect Pro has over 400 holes across the face of the soleplate, allowing for even steam distribution and even more precision when removing wrinkles. The iron automatically adjusts how much steam it outputs based on the temperature and fabric setting you've selected, better protecting the fabric from damage . We also liked this iron's extra-long cord (11.5 feet), which makes it easy to steam curtains.

When testing the Perfect Pro, our experts were slightly overwhelmed by the number of features this iron offers. In order to fully understand its capabilities and get the most out of the iron, you'll have to watch tutorials online, since the directions don't offer much insight into how to use the product.

For all its high-tech features (such as manual steam controls, extra-powerful steam distribution, and a long-lasting steel soleplate), our testers were disappointed to find that this iron doesn't have a ready light indicator. There's no way to tell when the iron has reached the right temperature and is ready for use.

Product Details: Weight: .95 pounds | Water Tank Size: 37 ounces | Wattage: 1800 watts | Soleplate Material: Stainless steel | Safety Features: Anti-drip, automatic shutoff, safety lock | Cord Length: 11.5 feet

BLACK + DECKER Advanced Steam Iron

  • Effectiveness 4.2 /5
  • Portability 4 /5

Our testers found the steam mode on this iron to be especially effective, removing wrinkles in a single pass on linen and cotton.

When dry ironing with this model, we found it took a few tries to get rid of wrinkles.

For fabric that's particularly wrinkled, the best way to target unwanted creases is to add heat and moisture, which softens the wrinkles and helps reverse the process that created them in the first place. The Black+Decker Vitessa steam iron is exceptional at just that; our testers found this iron to be particularly powerful at flattening creases on multiple types of fabric.

While many other irons we tested took at least a few swipes to get rid of deep creases, we found that this Black+Decker option made wrinkles disappear from cotton and linen in a single pass across the material when using the steam setting.

The vertical steam button is clearly marked at the top of the handle, making it easy to remove wrinkles from clothing, curtains, and more without taking them off the hanger or even touching the fabric. You also have the option to use the misting feature on this iron, which distributes a quick puff of water droplets to the fabric for tackling set-in wrinkles.

The Black+Decker steam iron also stood out to our testers because of its other perks, like the retractable power cord for easy storage, the anti-drip feature that eliminates water leaking out of the soleplate, and the automatic shutoff for added peace of mind.

Though our experts loved the steam settings on this iron, the dry iron settings weren't anything special. It took a few attempts to get rid of wrinkles on cotton, satin, and linen fabrics alike, but the process was still relatively quick and easy. If you prefer to use the dry setting to iron your clothes, this one certainly does the trick, but other irons we tested yielded better results.

Product Details: Weight: 2.5 pounds | Water Tank Size: 10.8 ounces | Wattage: 1200 watts | Soleplate Material: Nonstick | Safety Features: Anti-drip, automatic shutoff | Cord Length: 8 feet

Best for Travel

Conair ez press steam iron.

  • Effectiveness 4.3 /5

This iron is super lightweight and easy to pack when traveling.

The small soleplate on this iron makes it less equipped for big ironing jobs.

We've all been there—you're unpacking clothes after a long day of traveling, and you find that the only nice outfit you brought on the trip is covered in wrinkles. Rather than putting your trust in the cheap hotel iron (or showing up to an important event all wrinkly), the Conair EZ Press iron is the ideal travel companion to get rid of unwanted creases.

Weighing 1 pound and small in size for convenient packing, the Conair iron tucks away easily in a suitcase while removing wrinkles just as easily as its more expensive counterparts. You'll be able to use the steam setting (though our testers found the water tank to be quite small) or use it as a dry iron, and its varying temperature settings allow you to work on multiple fabric types.

While testing, our experts were pleasantly surprised to find that the Conair iron removed wrinkles from our satin, linen, and cotton napkins with minimal effort in just a few passes. While we had a bit of trouble getting the deepest creases out of linen, they eventually disappeared after several attempts.

The temperature dial under the handle makes it easy to raise or lower the temperature to work on different fabrics, and we liked that the ready light indicates when the iron is heated to the correct temperature so we didn't accidentally burn low-temperature fabrics.

This iron also has a vertical steam option for getting wrinkles out of hanging clothes, making it incredibly versatile when you're away from home.

Because of its smaller size, the Conair iron is best suited for quick ironing jobs, and our testers found that it was pretty time consuming to use when working with a larger piece of material, like a tablecloth. We also found its water tank to be quite small and difficult to refill, with the removable cap leaking slightly when tipped on its side.

However, it's a great all-around choice when you're in a pinch and you need a quick and lightweight solution for travel-induced wrinkles.

Product Details: Weight: 1 pound | Water Tank Size: Not listed | Wattage: 800 watts | Soleplate Material: Stainless steel | Safety Features: None | Cord Length: 8 feet

Best for Dry Ironing

Sunbeam iron.

This iron had great versatility across linen, cotton, and satin materials when dry ironing.

This iron's temperature fluctuates slightly when used for longer periods of time.

Dry ironing is a great way to make your clothes or fabric extra crisp, but finding a trustworthy iron that won't scorch your clothes or melt the tag can be a challenge. The Sunbeam Steam Master Steam Iron was the most effective dry iron we tested, removing wrinkles and deep creases on satin and cotton in just one swipe (though it needed a little more elbow grease to get rid of wrinkles on linen fabric).

When you want a burst of steam, our testers were impressed with this iron's steam capabilities—it flattened wrinkles in one to two attempts. Built-in settings for variable steam and spray mist mode allow you to target deep wrinkles more easily, too. The retractable power cord makes it super simple to put the iron away when not in use, and you won't have to worry about fussing with a too-long cord while you work.

Our testers noted how lightweight this iron felt when using, making it a lot easier than other models to use for long periods of time. All of the iron's settings are pretty self-explanatory, so you won't have to dig out the instructions every time you want to switch between steam and dry ironing. Plus, the temperature dial has specific markers for linen, cotton, wool, and synthetic materials to ensure nothing melts or sticks to the soleplate.

During testing, our experts noticed that the temperature of the iron's soleplate tended to decrease slightly after using it for a few minutes. We had to bump up the temperature a bit higher than the dial markings indicated after a while to maintain the correct heat levels.

Product Details: Weight: 2.6 pounds | Water Tank Size: Not listed | Wattage: 1400 watts | Soleplate Material: Non-stick soleplate | Safety Features: Anti-drip, automatic shutoff | Cord Length: 8 feet

Best Digital

Beautural 1800-watt steam iron.

  • Effectiveness 3.8 /5
  • Portability 5 /5

The LCD display makes it easy to see the settings and temperature while ironing.

Testers found that the steam setting doesn't remove wrinkles on cotton fabric.

This easy-to-use iron takes the guesswork out of selecting a temperature when you're ironing on different fabrics. Its digital display at the top of the handle clearly shows what fabric setting you're on as well as the steam level and mode number. These preset modes align with the general fabric heat recommendations, ensuring that you don't accidentally ruin your clothes while ironing.

Unlike many of the models we tested, it's super easy to tell when the Beautural iron is on and has reached the proper temperature. The LCD display tells you what fabric setting and steam level you're using, and the screen momentarily turns red once you've turned the iron off to provide reassurance that it's powering down.

Our testers found that the Beautural iron is extremely effective when dry ironing—it removed wrinkles from cotton fabric in just one swipe, and it only required one or two more passes on linen and satin. When we turned on the steam setting, our testers were able to lift wrinkles out of linen in one pass, but the steam was pretty ineffective on cotton. If you plan to iron cotton with this appliance, you'll want to turn off the steam.

We also liked the ergonomic handle grips, which made this Beautural iron extra comfortable to hold and easy to maneuver across the ironing board. The ceramic soleplate is designed to resist scratches, and its double-layer design helps to ensure the entire plate heats evenly and doesn't burn delicate clothing. Plus, the auto shutoff feature protects you if you forget to turn off the iron once you're done working.

Product Details: Weight: 3.18 pounds | Water Tank Size: 11.5 ounces | Wattage: 1800 watts | Soleplate Material: Ceramic | Safety Features: Automatic shutoff

Whether you constantly find yourself ironing wrinkles out of laundry, tablecloths, and more or you only need an iron occasionally, finding a steam iron that effectively removes wrinkles without damaging fabric is a top priority. Our winner for the best overall steam iron is the Black+Decker Light 'N Easy , which erased wrinkles from cotton, linen, and satin fabric in one to two swipes.

To determine our list of the best irons, we gathered a team of home experts in our lab in Des Moines, Iowa, and had them put 30 different steam irons through extensive testing. Our testers prepared satin, linen, and cotton napkins several days in advance, wetting the napkins, balling them up, and then securing them with rubber bands to create deep wrinkles and creases in the fabrics.

During our two-day test, we ran each iron across the wrinkled material in both dry and steam modes, making note of its effectiveness, the number of passes it took to remove wrinkles , and any changes we noticed to the fabric itself.

In addition to checking the effectiveness of the irons in getting rid of creases, we also took note of the design, portability, ease of use, and any safety features advertised.

Temperature

Whether you're working with cotton, linen, or another type of fabric, it's important to change your iron's temperature to avoid damaging the material. Many irons on the market have different settings that accommodate a variety of material types, but if you often iron one type of fabric over others, you'll want to find an iron that will safely and effectively remove wrinkles.

Water Tank Capacity

If you're purchasing an iron that has at least one steam setting, you'll want to consider the size of the water tank. If you plan to iron a lot of different items at once or you're ironing something large like a tablecloth, you'll want to find an iron that has a large enough water tank to get you through the job. This can help you avoid having to stop midway through a project to refill.

Soleplate Type

Soleplates are the flat metal piece on the face of your iron, and they're responsible for conducting heat and distributing steam evenly across fabric as you're working. Depending on the type of iron you purchase, you may find that it has either a ceramic or stainless steel soleplate.

While ceramic soleplates better protect you from accidentally burning your clothes while ironing, they also tend to wear out faster . Stainless steel soleplates last a lot longer but may stick to fabric when set at a high temperature. Depending on the material type you work with most and how long you'd like your iron to last, you'll want to keep these factors in mind.

Safety Features

Since irons conduct high levels of heat to remove wrinkles from your clothes, you'll want to consider added safety features that can prevent you or your family members from getting hurt. Many steam irons have automatic shutoff settings, which turns off the appliance after a certain amount of time. Others have anti-drip features, which prevent water from leaking out of the machine and getting near an electrical source.

Vremi 1800 Watt Steam Iron for Clothes

Our testers really liked the display on the Vremi Steam Iron , which has a temperature dial that allows for "in between" settings and turns green once you've reached your desired temperature. It performed especially well on linen and cotton when we tested this iron, flattening wrinkles in just one pass on dry mode and needing only a couple of extra passes with the steam setting. However, our experts found that the Vremi iron wasn't as effective as competing irons at removing wrinkles from cotton.

Sunbeam Hot-2-Trot Travel Iron

The Sunbeam Hot-2-Trot Travel Iron also caught our testers' attention in the lab, and we loved how lightweight and easy to maneuver this small-but-mighty appliance is. Overall, it was surprisingly effective when dry ironing on satin, linen, and cotton, and it could erase wrinkles with minimal effort. Our testers found it to be less effective on deep creases on satin and linen material, though it worked great on cotton.

Sunbeam Classic 1200 Watt Mid-size Anti-Drip Non-Stick Soleplate Iron

Our testers found the Sunbeam Classic 1200 Watt Iron to be a great basic option for shoppers who want a no-frills appliance. We found it to be lightweight, easy to maneuver, and particularly effective at clearing wrinkles when dry ironing cotton and satin. However, it didn't work well on linen and required a lot of extra passes to remove wrinkles on both the steam and dry settings.

How many watts should an iron have?

The average clothes iron uses between 1,000 to 2,000 watts, which is higher than other household appliances. The higher the wattage, the more powerful the iron is (and the more careful you'll need to be in order to avoid damaging your clothes).

Is a steam iron better than a normal iron?

Steam irons and dry irons are typically a matter of preference. Though dry irons usually leave a crisper look that is hard to achieve with a steam iron, the latter is better at removing deep creases with less effort. The added moisture released through holes in the steam iron's soleplate allows you to flatten wrinkles in less time. With a dry iron, you'll need to use a spray bottle to lightly moisten the material, and you'll also need to be more careful not to burn or melt your clothes than you might with a steam iron. Most irons on the market can be used for both dry and steam ironing.

This article was written by Samantha Jones , a former associate commerce home editor for Better Homes & Gardens . In order to write about the best irons, Samantha did several hours of research into steam irons, important features and safety concerns related to ironing, and the most popular steam irons on the market currently. She then compared this research to the detailed testing information gathered during our iron tests in Des Moines, Iowa. Best travel iron 2023: look your best on holiday from as little as £13.

ten best travel iron

Banish unwanted creases and wrinkles from your holiday wardrobe with these compact travel irons

Whether it’s regular trips for work or the annual holiday with the family, creased clothes are the bane of every traveller’s existence. No matter how well you iron your garments before you leave, or how carefully you fold and stack them in your suitcase, they’re guaranteed to emerge a wrinkled mess once you arrive at your destination. That’s why there’s only one sensible course of action: invest in the best travel iron you can find.

Many of us adopt the “hang it on the door frame and hope for the best” approach, but this does nothing for serious creasing. The only thing that will get you the results you need is a good travel iron or, alternatively, one of the new breed of garment steamers, which work wonders even without an ironing board.

How to choose the best travel iron for you?

What’s the difference between a travel iron and a garment steamer.

While irons require a board or flat surface, garment steamers are also incredibly popular – especially when it comes to travelling. This is because they give you the ability to coax the creases out of your clothes while they’re hanging up rather than requiring you to find an ironing board. The downside is that you won’t be able to create intentional creases and sharp lines in the same way you would with an iron.

Some products attempt to combine the benefits of both the iron and the steamer, and we’ve recommended some of those below.

How much do I need to spend?

The price of a good travel iron can vary, with some basic models selling for under £10 but others boasting additional features and sporting a high price to match. The most expensive entries on our list wouldn’t be out of place at home but are compact enough to take with you on a trip. More traditional travel irons, many of which require only a tiny amount of water in order to produce steam, are at the lower end of the price spectrum.

5. quest travel steam iron: a classic steam iron design, but compact.

ten best travel iron

Where rivals shrink dimensions or add garment steaming features, Quest has stuck with a traditional steam iron design. It’s relatively light and compact, and its collapsible handle allows it to shrink down in size when you’re not using it. This makes it a good choice for those who prefer a bog-standard iron to use on their travels, and don’t want to compromise on crease-tackling power.

With its smaller water tank, this might be best for dry ironing (although it does have options for steam iron and steam burst), but the adjustable temperature dial provides all the usual options including “nylon”, “silk” and “cotton” to ensure you’re using the optimal setting.

As with most irons, you can also expect automatic shut-off, anti-drip, and a spray mist button. The Black + Decker IR1010 Light ‘N Easy Iron is a little awkward to fill up, though, and its cap over the water hole can shut when you’re trying to add water.

The Black + Decker IR1010 Light ‘N Easy Iron does come with a two-year warranty, which, considering the price is under $30, is pretty good. What’s more, the cord on this iron can be easily wrapped about the base, so that you don’t have to bother with detangling each time you use it.

While the steam is automatically adjusted by this iron, there isn’t an additional steam boosting button, which may be a real drawback for some stubborn creases.

The best steam iron for precision

2. rowenta dw5080 steam iron.

The Rowenta DW5080 Steam Iron is one of the more pricey irons in our roundup, but for the money, you can expect a powerful iron with 400 micro steam holes - the highest number of steam holes we came across. This iron has been designed to work with tap water, and its stainless steel soleplate will glide smoothly across your clothes.

It may sound simple, but the shape of this iron is one of its key selling points. Having a pointed tip means you can reach into tight corners if you’re ironing shirts or collars, and you can get a crisp finish on quilts and sewing projects, too.

The warranty on the Rowenta DW5080 Steam Iron is only for one year, which is shorter than others and disappointing, considering this iron is more than double the price of some other irons in our guide that have warranties that are longer. It also doesn’t have a digital display or retractable cord that some other more expensive models offer. If these aspects aren’t that important to you, though, the impressive number of steam holes makes this iron a solid choice.

The best steam iron for travel

3. steamfast sf-750 mini steam iron.

The SteamFast SF-750 Mini Steam Iron is designed to be used when you need to iron away from home or when you’re on vacation.

This mini steam iron takes three minutes to heat up and doesn’t feature your normal handle on top, which makes it feel a little strange to hold. The SteamFast does come with a travel bag and a measuring cup, though.

Weighing just 1.32 lbs, this travel steam iron is super light, and it still has a useful steam burst option for getting rid of creases that need a bit more attention. The SteamFast SF-750 Mini Steam Iron lacks a self-cleaning function and it does only offer five steam holes, however, this iron has been designed for traveling and has a relatively low price tag too.

The best professional steam iron

4. black + decker allure pro d3030 steam iron.

The Black + Decker Allure Pro D3030 Steam Iron is a quality model that features an auto-clean system and multiple temperature options. You can also use this steam iron for clothing that’s on a hanger or hanging curtains due to its handy vertical steam setting.

There is both a steam button and a water spray so that you can take on tougher areas. Compared to some other leading models, the Black + Decker Allure Pro D3030 Steam Iron can produce an impressive amount of steam, which means you’ll be able to get through your ironing pile much faster.

An auto shut-off makes the Black + Decker Allure Pro D3030 Steam Iron a good choice. At 3.89 lbs, this steam iron is one of the heaviest we reviewed, which could be a real setback if you’re looking for something that’s super lightweight.

Best steam iron under $50

5. t-fal ultraglide plus steam fv5841u0.

With 1800 watts of power and a 30 g/minute of continuous steam output, the T-fal Ultraglide Plus Steam FV5841U0 is fast, efficient, and powerful. At under $50, it's one of the more affordable in our roundup, so it's a great choice if you're in need of a fast tool for ironing less frequently.

What sets this iron apart is the vertical steam setting. If you have more sensitive materials such as satin, silk, or linen, or even if you just want a perfect finish on shirts, steaming is highly effective. It's also great for sprucing up household items like curtains, as you can keep them hanging and use the iron to steam the lengths.

T-fal has a new patented Durilium AirGlide soleplate that ensures a smooth glide and is ultra scratch-resistant. Not only will it protect your clothes, but it will also last for years to come. The auto-off feature means the iron will automatically turn off after it has been left on its side for 30 seconds, offering you peace of mind that it won't keep running or potentially burn anything. Eco mode also uses up to 20% less energy, so it's a handy mode to choose when you don't need full power.

The customer reviews for this iron are generally positive, but a few have mentioned that the cord isn't long enough. Cordless options offer you much more flexibility for ironing away from a power outlet, so this is something to bear in mind if you don't have accessible areas to place an ironing board.

Best large steam iron

6. sundu le-ir002.

If you're looking for a steam iron with a substantial water tank for getting through large piles of laundry in one sitting, the Sundu LE-IR002 will be a great choice. It has a 1.5L water capacity, and the tank is detachable, making it easy to fill up under the tap. It's also equipped with a measuring cup, so you can use this to fill the tank directly if you want to avoid removing it.

Despite its size, Sundu has made this steam iron as easy to carry as possible. It's designed with a locking device that stabilizes the iron into the base and allows you to lift it with one hand. When it's not in use, you can also store the cord in the storage slot in the base, making it tidy and compact to store.

This model also has a sleek LED display that makes it simple to operate all functions including temperature level, automatic shut-off, water shortage protection, and self-cleaning.

This steam iron does come at a steeper price, so it's important to know that it will stand the test of time. It has a double-layer ceramic soleplate and a stainless steel finish that not only protects your delicate clothing but also is more durable, safer, and anti-scratch. This product has been given an overall rating of 4.2 stars out of 5 on Amazon, however, a few negative reviews state that users weren't impressed with the steam function.

The best premium steam iron

7. rowenta dw9280.

If professional quality is what you're looking for, and you have a higher budget to match, then it's hard to go wrong with the Rowenta DW9280. The 1800 watts of power and a stainless steel soleplate are pretty standard in our steam iron roundup, but the powerful steam boost is what elevates this choice. Pump injection technology pushes 30% more steam into the fabric for much faster wrinkle removal, so you can complete your ironing pile quickly. You can use it for vertical steaming, too, which is perfect for garments such as curtains, suits, or evening dresses.

With 400 steam holes, this is significantly higher than other irons in our selection. This distributes steam much more effectively, so every inch of the garment is paid the same attention. The smart motion sensor also stops steam when the iron is not moving, so it's safer and more energy-efficient to use.

Overall, this steam iron has notable upgrades that make it worthy of the higher price, and it will definitely enhance your ironing routine. Reviews on Amazon were positive, but one user did note that the steam was concentrated in the tip of the device, and a single blast was very powerful. It's hard to fault this choice, but this could be something to consider.

Performance

If you're looking for a quick way to make your ironing more efficient, power is the first thing to watch out for. A higher wattage means less work when it comes to ironing clothes, and a larger number of steam holes will also produce fuller steam bursts. Additionally, adjustable steam gauges allow you to have control over how much steam you use at a time. If you use a lot of steam, you'll want to look out for units that have short steam regeneration times between bursts.

Soleplates come in many different shapes, too. The most common is the standard U shape or a tapered design, which makes it easy to get into the corners of buttons, collars, and other difficult areas. Non-stick soleplates are also essential for keeping your iron and clothes clean. Look out for a self-cleaning function, as well as an anti-calcification and anti-scale system. This will help to reduce and remove impurities from the inner soleplate of your iron so that you can avoid any marks on your garments.

Ease of use

The best steam irons have a long cord, giving you as much freedom of movement as possible when you iron. You might not have a power outlet easily accessible where you choose to iron, or you might be ironing a large garment that requires more flexibility. Iron should also have additional helpful features, such as a temperature alert to let you know when the iron is ready to use, and, for digital irons, an intuitive interface that is easy to operate and adjust.

It's also important to find the right balance of weight, size, and usability. A slightly heavier iron lends itself well to smooth passes over fabric, but an iron that is too heavy is hard to use and maneuver. Whether you have lots of laundry to iron or just need to touch up a shirt, an iron should be comfortable, so look for an ergonomic grip. A good steam iron will also have all of its buttons and dials within easy reach of the handle to make it easier to adjust.

We've all experienced the panic of thinking you've left an appliance plugged in, but most modern irons will have you covered. Consider an iron with safety features such as automatic shut-off to give you peace of mind that you won't burn anything if your mind wanders off for a minute. Most irons are designed to turn off in around eight to 15 minutes if left in an upright position or in 30 seconds if left tipped over or face down.

How much does an iron cost?

We tested irons that cost between $20 and $80 and come with large water reservoirs, responsive steam settings, and quite a bit of power. There are irons available for closer to $20, but they usually have fewer features and don’t work as well on delicate fabrics.

Best travel irons to keep your clothes looking crisp on the move

ten best travel iron

A travel iron is an essential tool to have in your arsenal if you're someone who likes to look sharp on the move.

It's all well and good packing away your favourite shirts ahead of your next trip but, without an iron to hand, they'll likely stay packed away in your bag for the duration of your holiday. Of course, you could cross your fingers for an iron in your hotel room. Or you could take matters into your own hands and invest in your own travel iron.

When it comes to choosing a travel iron, portability and convenience are paramount. Look for compact and lightweight options that won't take up much space in your luggage otherwise your biggest problem will be washing your clothes rather than ironing them. A foldable handle or a retractable cord can be a great space-saving feature and many newer models include these.

It's also worth paying attention to the power source requirements of your next destination. Opting for a dual voltage travel iron that can switch between different voltage settings, ensuring compatibility across various countries, is your best bet for overcoming this issue around the world.

You'll also want to keep in mind the iron's heating capabilities. Look for a model that heats up quickly and maintains a consistent temperature for effective wrinkle removal. Adjustable temperature controls allow you to adapt to different fabrics and avoid damaging delicate materials, while a non-stick soleplate is also essential for a smooth glide over your clothes without leaving marks or residue.

The 7 Very Best Clothing Irons

“most people who create irons understand that they really need to have a couple functions.”.

A good iron can make the difference between a procrastination-inducing, monotonous task and entering a flow state while you sweep a well-calibrated machine over your clothing or sheets. As a textile nerd and amateur sewer, I’ve used a lot of irons in my day, from a gravity-fed model built like a tank to a dinky hand-me-down that permanently scorched a silk dress. These days, I use a standing garment steamer instead of an iron for an everyday, leaving-the-house-in-five-minutes de-wrinkling job. But there’s a time and place for irons: Unlike steamers, they apply heat directly to a textile, which lifts deep-set wrinkles more quickly, makes sharper creases, and creates a uniformly crisp surface.

“Fortunately at this point in our civilization, most people who create irons understand that they really need to have a couple functions,” says Zach Pozniak , a third-generation dry cleaner and the vice-president of operations at Jeeves New York . One of those is the ability to produce steam, which relaxes textile fibers, more quickly smoothing wrinkles with less risk of damaging clothing. All of the irons on this list have a steam function, and we’re noting which our experts have described as having especially fine, reliable, or powerful steam.

Another necessary function is a well-calibrated thermostat that consistently delivers the heat you specify. High heat is more of a problem than low heat — a cooler iron won’t be as effective, but a too-hot iron can scorch clothing on a setting that should be safe for the material. (If you’re not sure about the right setting or you don’t trust your iron, it’s best to start low and work your way up.) To find the best iron for everyone, I caucused Pozniak and nine other garment experts, from stylists to historical costumers, about their favorites and what to avoid. Then I tested the top picks at home.

What we’re looking for

The power of an iron — measured in watts — determines how hot it can get and how much oomph is behind each puff of steam. Most options on this list are around 1,600 to 1,800 watts, with the exception of a 420-watt travel iron.

Mineralization management

Another necessary function for an iron, according to Pozniak, is a self-cleaning function, which removes the buildup of minerals that naturally occur in tap water. Mineralization can clog steam holes and “eject this gross white grainy sand, and if you iron it into your clothes, it’s stained,” says Pozniak. One way to avoid mineralization is to use distilled water, the practice of “true ironing fanatics,” per Pozniak. After a year of testing nearly a dozen irons and garment steamers , I switched over to distilled water — it is, in my experience, the most reliable way to eliminate grainy buildup and spitting, but it’s more of a hassle to refill than using the tap. So I’m favoring irons that have self-cleaning capabilities, assuming not everyone wants to buy and store a jug of special laundry water.

If you’re the most fanatical of ironing fanatics, laundry expert and host of the Laundry Guy Patric Richardson recommends using not distilled water but spring water. There’s some variation in the temperature at which water boils, depending on what minerals it contains — think of salted pasta water boiling hotter than unsalted water, for example. Richardson uses spring water because it contains some minerals, but less than tap water; that allows it to heat up slightly beyond the boiling point of distilled water for extra-hot steam.

Best iron overall

Rowenta Focus Iron

Power: 1,725 watts | Mineralization management: Designed to work with tap water

Among the experts I spoke to, German brand Rowenta came up most frequently. Its irons are beloved for durability; well-calibrated controls, including its temperature settings and steam trigger; and safety features. Illustrator Maira Kalman uses their Pro Master iron to press sheets, and Freer favors their irons for “very fine, very concentrated” steam.

ten best travel iron

Although there are more expensive Rowenta irons (some of which are on this list), the Focus, its second-cheapest model, is powerful and reliable enough to make it our best-in-class pick. I’ve been using it for about six months for everything from ironing collared shirts to pressing four layers of denim into a tight, sewable stack while hemming a pair of jeans. The Focus could unwrinkle creases in one sweep that would take two or three passes with the ancient hand-me-down I’d used before. (Its pointed tip is also very useful on detail work, like collars and the space between buttons.) Graphic designer and home sewer Tracy Ma, a Focus owner, likes that it “exhales big ol’ puffs of steam exactly upon trigger and never before or after,” something I also noted and appreciated as an indicator of good engineering.

It also comes equipped with safety features to prevent scorching fabric or work surfaces: The iron turns off after 30 seconds if left facing down or tipped over, and after eight minutes if left standing up. I haven’t put it through a heavy-duty durability test yet, but take it from Strategist senior editor Crystal Martin, who has used her Focus for over ten years: “I tend to iron and dash out and leave the iron on the board,” she says, and although she’s knocked it onto the floor “more times than I can count,” her Focus is still going strong.

Best less-expensive iron

BLACK+DECKER Vitessa Advanced Steam Iron

Power: 1,200 watts | Mineralization management: Auto-clean function

If you’re looking for a less-expensive iron with a little less power than the Rowenta Focus, Black and Decker’s Vitessa line is a good bet. I tested out the Vitessa on a cotton jacket that had gotten very wrinkled in the wash and a day of sewing and alteration projects — lifting wrinkles wasn’t as smooth or quick with the Vitessa as it was with the Rowenta Focus, but it performed consistently and expelled steam without any spitting or leaking. Pozniak calls it a “really solid” option that he’s used since college; it’s also a favorite of Marilee Nelson, a nontoxic consultant and co-founder of Branch Basics .

Best upgrade iron

Rowenta SteamForce Iron

Power: 1,800 watts | Mineralization management: Self-cleaning system

For a professional-quality iron with a more powerful steam setting than the Focus, I recommend Rowenta’s SteamForce model. Christine Millar, an anesthesiologist, historical costumer , and parent of a young child, uses the the iron, which she chose especially for its safety features. Although she says that many of her peers in the costuming community use a gravity-feed iron , “I can’t do that because this child will bump into this iron and hurt himself horribly.” She uses the Rowenta SteamForce iron instead, which “has every safety feature on the planet” — like the Focus, it turns off after 30 seconds if left facing down, and after eight minutes if left standing up.

(Editor’s note: The model Millar originally recommended, the SteamForce DW9280, is currently out of stock, but this model, the SteamForce DW9540U1, has most of the same specs, plus a slightly higher wattage.)

Best titanium-ceramic iron

CHI Steam Iron for Clothes with Titanium Infused Ceramic Soleplate

Power: 1,700 watts | Mineralization management: Self-cleaning

All of the irons on this list have a steel soleplate — with the exception of this model by CHI, the maker of a cult-favorite hair straightener . Its steam iron’s soleplate is made of the same titanium-infused ceramic used in its hairstyling tools, which “makes it super-smooth and it glides really well,” says Pozniak.

Best cordless iron

Panasonic Cordless, Portable 1500W Contoured Multi-Directional Steam/Dry Iron

Power: 1,500 watts | Mineralization management: Anti-calcium system

Most irons are powered by a cord that plugs into the wall, but in some cases, a cordless iron might be preferable. They’re useful for sewing or quilting projects, when you might want some extra mobility to spread out pattern pieces, prep larger pieces of fabric, or move between different workstations. This cordless Panasonic model is a favorite among sewers, including pattern designer Angela Wolf and  Tracy DeChurch , who runs  the Sewing Channel  on YouTube. “Let’s face it, a cord gets in the way no matter what the project is,” DeChurch says. Even if you’re not a sewer or quilter, a cordless iron can still be useful for ironing sheets or other large jobs: “There’s nothing worse than being tethered to an outlet” when ironing something large, Pozniak says.

Best iron with water tank

Rowenta Power Steam Station Iron

Power: 1,500 watts | Mineralization management: Anti-calcium flush system

One way to get the benefits of distilled water without the hassle of constant refills is to buy an iron with a large water tank. For long sessions of heavy-duty ironing and steaming, Gwen Whiting, the co-founder of the Laundress, recommends Rowenta’s power-steam iron, which holds 57 ounces of water, enough for nearly half an hour of continuous steam. “I turned my husband into an iron aficionado,” Whiting says. “He will only use this model because the powerful steam creates the best results.”

Best splurge iron

Laurastar Lift Steam Iron

Power: 1,600 watts | Mineralization management: Includes anti-mineralization cartridge

The Laurastar system is a high-end combination iron and garment steamer that can be used as a replacement for dry cleaning. Richardson has had this iron for several years and swears by it . “The thing I love about the Laurastar is the steam is so hot,” says Richardson. “Their steam dries on contact. I can iron a shirt in 60 seconds with their iron because you only go over the area once and it’s completely dry, so you can just keep moving.”

The 6 Best Kitchen Trash Cans, According To Rigorous Testing

The best cloth diapers, according to parents who’ve used them, why trust forbes vetted.

The Forbes Vetted editors, like all consumers, want appliances that work efficiently, hold up and help make daily chores a little bit easier. In addition to authoring articles on how to tackle laundry efficiently, our home and kitchen team also writes, researches and in some cases, tests, a slew of laundry-related content. This includes the best stackable washers and dryers , the best carpet cleaners for pets and a wrinkle-curbing steamer that one of our writers finds quite handy. For this clothes iron story, we looked to contributor Ashley Abramson , who has over a decade of experience writing and testing the latest home products, including the best Dyson vacuums and immersion blenders . We also consulted laundry expert and author of Laundry Love: Finding Joy in a Common Chore , Patric Richardson, on the main factors to keep in mind when shopping for the best clothes iron.

We regularly refresh this story to ensure all products are priced correctly and in stock. This story was last updated in September 2023 to replace out of stock products with equally worthy picks, and to add more information to our shopping guide and frequently asked questions.

How We Chose The Best Clothes Irons

When curating a list of the best clothes irons, we took our own daily laundry tasks into consideration. We started by looking at all the bells, whistles and functions that make these small appliances ideal for laundry routines, including special features like continuous steam and auto shut-off. Weight and water tank capacity were also factors we examined, thanks to the guidance of Patric Richardson.

After using these factors to narrow down our search, we combed through dozens of customer reviews, ensuring each pick earned no less than a 4-star rating. Finally, we made sure to include options for a variety of purposes—a compact option like The Nori Press is great for travel, while the Sunbeam Steammaster is a wallet-friendly pick ideal for readers on a budget.

What To Consider When Buying A Handheld Clothes Iron

Like any appliance, clothing irons are somewhat of an investment, so you don’t necessarily want to pick up the first model you come across. At minimum, you want a model that comes with adjustable temperature and steam settings to quell wrinkles on all kinds of fabrics. According to laundry expert Patric Richardson, here’s what else you should consider before buying one for your home.

When it comes to soleplates, Richardson recommends ones made of stainless steel or ceramic, as these surfaces are durable and easy to clean. While non-stick materials may seem convenient, the coating can peel off over time, meaning you might end up having to replace your iron sooner than later.

Another factor to consider is the iron’s weight. Heavier models are better at pressing materials, but could be tiresome for wrists. Generally speaking, Richardson prefers heavier models over lighter ones. “Something with a little heft always helps press out the wrinkles,” he says. If you’re looking for a handheld iron you can tote around, a lighter, more portable model may be a better fit.

Steam output

Steam is critical to tackling wrinkles. However, according to Richardson, many affordable irons don’t produce enough steam to make a difference in the appearance of your clothes. If you’d rather not drop $100-plus on a powerful steam iron, you have an alternative: Buy a heavy model and use a spray bottle filled with water to moisten the fabric as you go.

Fabric Settings

If you’re going to be ironing a wide variety of fabrics, such as bedsheets, curtains, blouses, pants and tablecloth linens, it’s best to choose a model with a variety of different temperature settings. For example, rather than one with just “low” and “high,” look for a model with dedicated silk, cotton, and linen settings.

Additional Features

Extra features like auto-shutoff may be something you want to prioritize in a clothes iron. Auto shut-off automatically turns your clothes iron off if left untouched for a set amount of time (typically 10 minutes when sitting upright, but it depends on the model). Cord retractors are another feature worth considering, which spare you the headache of tying up long cords when it’s time to store. Plus, irons with a cord retractor tend to have longer-than-average cords—especially helpful if you’re not close to an outlet. “There’s nothing more frustrating than an iron with a short cord,” Richardson says.

What Is The Best Clothes Iron To Get Wrinkles Out Of Clothes?

A clothes iron that creates steam is typically best for releasing deeply set wrinkles. A product like the Rowenta DW9540 Steam Force Pro —our overall pick for best steam clothes iron—is ideal for these situations. The moisture from the steam helps the fibers within your garments relax and return back to their original form, thus releasing the wrinkles and creating a smooth look.

Are Rowenta Irons Worth The Price?

Rowenta is well-known for its deluxe steamers and irons, but some may be hesitant to purchase since some of their models have a higher price tag than competitor models. However, in this instance—you get what you pay for. We found that several of the Rowenta irons have stellar customer feedback backed by hundreds of reviews. If you want a clothes iron that can stand the test of time (and effectively rid your clothes of wrinkles), Rowenta is a safe bet.

What Is The Difference Between A Dry Clothes Iron And A Steam Clothes Iron?

Whereas a dry iron uses heat to press clothes, a steam iron is essentially a mix between a steamer and an iron. Dry irons have soleplates that heat up, and you use them by pressing the appliance onto clothing to remove wrinkles. Steam irons can be used the exact same way—but they can also use hot steam to smooth out wrinkles.

The 6 Best Steam Irons of 2024, Tested and Reviewed

We tested 30 steam irons—here are our top contenders

ten best travel iron

Emily Estep is a plant biologist and journalist who has worked for a variety of online news and media outlets, writing about and editing topics including environmental science and houseplants.

ten best travel iron

The Spruce Home / Dera Burreson

Whether you're ironing a blouse for a day of work, quickly  de-wrinkling everyday clothes , or prepping fabrics for your next crafty DIY project, you'll want to reach for a dependable steam iron. The good news is that there are plenty of great brands out there that heat quickly and glide smoothly. But it can be quite a challenge to iron out which ones are the best on the market.

As part of our extensive research, we reached out to Jerry Pozniak , CEO of Jeeves New York, a professional dry cleaning service. "All irons do the same thing. They have a smooth metal iron surface, get hot, and most have the ability to produce steam." But, he adds, "The most important factors are reliability and weight. I prefer an iron that is heavier as it will aid in producing crisp creases and flat seams."

Taking Pozniak's advice, we asked ironing newbies and experienced professionals alike to test 30 steam irons in The Lab and narrowed down our list to the top six. To make sure we found the best of the best, we got to work ironing satin, linen, and cotton fabrics and rated each iron based on effectiveness, thoughtful design, portability, heat up time, and overall value . We also tested heating times and evaluated how each one removed wrinkles. We even extended our testing to six months, so that you would know exactly what you're getting over time.

Editor's Note: This review was revised on February 2024 with updated long-term testing results.

Best Overall

Beautural 1800-watt steam iron.

  • Effectiveness 3.8 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Portability 5 /5
  • Heat Time 5 /5

Heats up in 10 seconds

Splash guard

Has an auto shut-off feature

Steam setting didn't perform as well on cotton

Limited availability through select online vendors

Hands down, our best overall pick is the Beautural 1800-Watt Steam Iron with Digital LCD Screen. We think it's ideal for beginners and professional ironers alike.

We gave this steam iron a perfect rating for its heat-up time because it was ready to use in just 10 seconds—the fastest of the 30 we tested. We especially appreciated that the display screen noted whether the specific fabric should be wet or dry. (You seriously don't have to do any internet research when using this device because all of the details are right at your fingertips.)

Plus, the display does an excellent job of telling you which setting to choose, so you won't waste any time. The iron also earned a perfect score for both design and portability. We think its ceramic soleplate is large enough to iron everyday fabrics with ease, and the grip handle is perfectly designed for hours of ironing. (This is ideal if you're a quilter working on a lengthy project or tackling a week's worth of dress shirts.)

The Spruce / Dera Burreson

During testing, when ironing satin materials , the Beautural iron only took one to two passes to remove all wrinkles and was able to remove a crease in one pass. On linen (both dry and steam settings), it removed all wrinkles and a crease in one pass. With cotton, this steam iron worked to remove all creases in one pass on the dry setting. We docked a few points on effectiveness because the steam setting took several passes to remove wrinkles and used a good amount of water to remove them all. We also noted that this cord is a little bit shorter than the majority of our picks; it's 6 feet whereas many of our options are 8 feet long.

Notably, this user-friendly iron is decked out with several safety features, including an automatic shut-off feature that'll kick in if it's idle for 30 seconds when lying flat. The water fill area has a splash guard to help prevent leaks or accidental spills onto your clothing, too. Even after six months, we found that the iron continued to perform as expected, and we were still amazed at its efficiency.

Dimensions: 5.75 x 4.88 x 11.3 inches | Weight: 3.18 pounds | Color: Gray and white | Cord Length: 6 feet | Wattage: 1,800 watts | Water Tank Capacity: 11.5 ounces

When ironing, a soleplate is the part of the iron that comes into contact with your clothes and other fabrics. The type of soleplate material, such as stainless steel, ceramic, or aluminum, affects how well the iron glides over fabrics and how effectively it removes creases. A good soleplate should be non-stick and should not cause fabrics to snag when pressed.

BLACK + DECKER Advanced Steam Iron

  • Effectiveness 4.2 /5
  • Design 4 /5
  • Portability 4 /5
  • Heat Time 4 /5

Space-saving

Large water reservoir

Vertical steaming feature

No ready light

Cotton and linen fabrics are on the same setting

If you're looking to save space in your laundry room, opt for an iron with a retractable cord. The Black+Decker ICR2020 Steam Iron is our favorite because it's incredibly effective at removing wrinkles and is easy to store when you're done with your chore. It also has the best of both worlds: Like a clothes steamer , this iron has a vertical steaming feature, which is optimal for quick touch ups on hanging garments.

But the real reason we love it: It was able to smooth out all fabrics in just one to two passes in our tests, and we were impressed with how immediately it removed wrinkles from linen fabric. For cotton and linen, the iron heated in two minutes. For satin, it was ready in 30 seconds!

While we weren't too happy there was no "ready" or "not ready" light, we appreciated the detailed setting information, even though cotton and linen fabrics ended up being on the same setting. We also noted that the water reservoir is large, which is great when you have mounds of ironing to get through—you won’t run out of steam. After testing for six months, we loved how this iron packs a punch despite its diminutive size and continues to perform well. We think it's lightweight, yet still has all of the features and capabilities of a larger, heavier iron.

Dimensions: 4.84 x 11.73 x 5.79 inches | Weight: 2 pounds | Color: Green | Cord Length: Not listed | Wattage: 1,200 watts | Water Tank Capacity: Not listed

Best Splurge

Rowenta perfect pro station iron.

  • Effectiveness 4.6 /5
  • Portability 4.8 /5

Docking station

Large water tank

Professional-grade performance

Heavy, bulky design

Our splurge-worthy pick is the Rowenta DG8624U1 Perfect Pro Station Iron because it delivers professional-grade results and comes with its own docking station. If you're someone who irons often or values the feel and design of a top-notch product, this is an excellent choice. The removable large water tank and smartly designed pointed tip made this pick a definite stand out in our testing. Plus, it has the longest cord of all of our picks at 12 feet.

During testing, this iron breezed through satin, linen, and cotton fabrics, and the steam was particularly spectacular at removing creases and wrinkles. This iron is heavier and bulkier than others we tested, which can be an asset if you need to apply pressure to a garment or seam, but it might seem more like a workout for everyday use. Katie Berry, The Spruce's Cleaning Review Board member and cleaning expert, stresses that "it's 12 pounds without water." Also, while the design is eye-catching, this iron does take up a good amount of space, so you'll want to make sure you have somewhere to store it.

We affectionately refer to this steam iron as a "workhorse" after using it regularly for six months to support our sewing and quilting. We especially love that it gets nice and hot, and you can iron for a whole session without running out of steam. Just know this model had to have a permanent residence in our laundry room since with the docking station it's about twice as large as any other machine on our list.

Dimensions: 18.11 x 11.81 x 14.7 inches | Weight: 14 pounds | Color: Blue | Cord Length: 12 feet | Wattage: 1,800 watts | Water Tank Capacity: 37 ounces

Sunbeam Classic 1200-Watt Iron

  • Effectiveness 3.4 /5
  • Portability 4.5 /5
  • Value 2.5 /5

Easy to distinguish between settings

Heats up quickly

Easy to grip

Did not work well on linen

Awkward spray nozzle placement

If you're looking for a no-fuss steam iron, we suggest opting for the Sunbeam Classic 1200-Watt Mid-Size Anti-Drip Non-Stick Soleplate Iron. As the name suggests, it packs a ton of good features for an affordable iron, and it was so quick to heat up and easy to use.

In our testing, this Sunbeam iron heated to 450 degrees in less than a minute. We loved that it was light and easy to maneuver, and we only docked half a point for portability because the 8-foot cord is not retractable. When it came to ironing multiple fabric types, this iron performed well on both satin and cotton, getting all of the ripples out in just a few passes. It took a little more effort to  remove wrinkles from the linen , and overall didn’t do too well there, hence our rating.

We also like that the iron is straightforward to use, and it's easy to distinguish between the settings. When testing, we also noted that the iron is easy to grip, but the spray feature is a little awkward to use because of its placement—it’s perched up high, so the water sprays out inconsistently. Even with this minor inconvenience, this option is for you if you're looking for a reliable basic iron to add to your routine. Even after six months of use, we love the iron for its long, 360-degree swivel cord, which allows for plenty of movement while ironing.

Dimensions: 6.3 x 11.6 x 5.6 inches | Weight: 2.7 pounds | Color: White | Cord Length: 8 feet | Wattage: 1,200 watts | Water Tank Capacity: Not listed

Best for Travel

Sunbeam hot-2-trot travel iron.

  • Effectiveness 3.3 /5
  • Heat Time 4.5 /5

Lightweight

Large water opening to prevent spills

Irons armholes easily

Plastic smell

Difficult to sit upright

If you're looking for a travel steam iron to take on your business trips and vacations, try the Sunbeam Hot-2-Trot Travel Iron that we deemed small but mighty. It effectively de-wrinkled all three fabrics we tested, and we specifically noted that it's the perfect size to iron armholes and more delicate, hard-to-reach places, like collars and cuffs.

This tiny steam iron heated in under a minute, although our temperature gauge said it wasn't quite as hot as the manufacturer claimed. While it's lightweight, it's likely only good for someone with smaller hands as the features are quite tiny. The heat dial is miniature and the puff steam button is hard to click on. If you have long nails or larger hands, you might have difficulty using this iron. It was also troublesome to sit the iron upright because of where the cord meets the iron.

However, we love the large water opening and how you can quickly fill up the reservoir without spills—it will fit easily under awkward bathroom sinks in hotels. It also holds enough water for small craft projects, if you want an iron dedicated specifically for that use. Ultimately, this would be a great iron for traveling or crafting. We think you should opt for a more heavy-duty steam iron if you tend to iron frequently, or if you iron tough seams or larger quilts.

Dimensions: 3.46 x 3.13 x 6.57 inches | Weight: 1 pound | Color: Blue and white | Cord Length: 8 feet | Wattage: 800 watts | Water Tank Capacity: 3 ounces

Best Portable

Conair ez press steam iron.

  • Effectiveness 4.3 /5

Our testers liked that the Conair EZ Press 800-Watt Handheld Steam Iron was lightweight and had an indicator light showing when it was ready to get to work. For the most part, this iron effectively got all of the wrinkled creases out fairly adequately in our testing.

There were a few drawbacks, though. The stopper covering the water area felt cheap and dripped during the ironing process. And the soleplate was also pretty small, so this wouldn't be a great choice for someone ironing larger items. Still, we love how portable this model is and think it'll work great for college students or travelers. Even after six months of testing, this iron still held up, and we continue to be impressed with its effectiveness.

Dimensions: 6.8 x 4.29 x 5.12 inches | Weight: 1 pound | Color: Blue and white | Cord Length: 8 feet | Wattage: 800 watts | Water Tank Capacity: Not listed

Real Simple / Dera Burreson

Our best overall pick is the Beautral 1800-Watt Steam Iron with Digital LCD Screen , because it's easy to use, effective at quickly removing wrinkles, and features a helpful display screen. Or consider the Black+Decker ICR2020 Steam Iron Vitessa Advanced Steam Iron with Retractable Cord as a best value option. This steam iron is incredibly effective at removing wrinkles and easily stores in small spaces.

How We Tested the Steam Irons

We spent one day thoroughly testing 30 irons to find the best ones. In The Lab , we tested and evaluated effectiveness , portability , heat time , the design , and overall value .

  • Effectiveness: We set wrinkles on three types of fabric ahead of the test. First, we wet the satin, cotton, and linen cloth napkins, and then balled up each napkin and secured it with a rubber band. We then let the napkins sit for a couple of days until dry. We ironed to see how effectively they removed wrinkles. The irons were tested on each fabric on both their non-steam and steam setting (if equipped), except for the satin—that fabric type should never be steamed. On the day of the test, we timed how long it took each iron to remove the wrinkles from each type of material. We also purposely added ironed creases to each fabric and then tried to remove them.
  • Portability: While ironing, we made detailed observations on the device’s portability, noting how heavy the irons were when their water reservoir was full and how comfortable the iron was to maneuver across the ironing board. We also looked at the model’s cord length to evaluate how much flexibility users would have in the distance of their iron from the outlet where it’s plugged in.
  • Heat Time: We measured the heating time of each iron, using a stopwatch to see how long it took to heat to the appropriate temperatures for ironing satin and delicates, linen, and cotton, noting if the time seemed quick, average, or unreasonably long. We also used a thermometer to make sure the soleplate’s temperature remained consistent and reached the advertised and desired temperature.
  • Design: Throughout testing, we also paid attention to the design of each iron. We observed the device’s overall temperature, noting if the handle or body of the iron seemed uncomfortably hot. We looked at whether or not the water reservoir leaked water droplets, the ease of filling the reservoir, built-in safety features, the comfortability of the handle, how easy the controls were to operate, and the overall aesthetic of each device.
  • Overall Value: After testing all 30 irons, we used our experience and the price tag to rate come up with an overall value of each iron.

All of the testing data was analyzed by our editors to make this list of the best steam irons. We also sent 10 irons home with long-term testers who used them over the course of six months to determine their longevity and real-world effectiveness. These testers evaluated the irons based on the attributes listed above, and shared whether the iron became a part of their everyday routine and a go-to product compared to previous models they had owned.

What to Look for in a Steam Iron

As we tested irons in the lab, we discovered a few key features that kept making our lists, such as temperature settings , steam output , portability , and safety features .

Temperature Settings

Temperature control is important when picking out a steam iron. Different  fabrics need to be ironed at different temperatures  so they aren't scorched or damaged. "Certain fabrics are sensitive to higher heat, says Stefan Bucur, a cleaning and organizing expert. "Ideally, a good quality iron should have a precise temperature gauge where you can easily switch to a lower heat when required."

It's also important that the iron heats up to its promised temperature in a reasonable amount of time. Some irons can heat up in a quick 30 seconds, while others can take minutes to reach the desired temperature. The Beautural 1800-Watt Steam Iron with Digital LCD Screen , our best overall pick, for instance, heats up in seconds.

Steam Output

"Steam penetrates the fibers to get rid of wrinkles, then the hot, dry iron will remove the moisture and give you a flat, crisp finish," explains Pozniak. It's handy to know that steam output is measured in grams per minute, and typically, the higher the grams per minute, the more effective the iron. Some models offer more than 200 grams of steam per minute, while others produce a less generous 35 grams per minute.

In addition to a powerful steam output, some irons (such as our best value pick, the Black+Decker ICR2020 Vitessa Advanced Steam Iron ) have a vertical steam feature that allows them to steam and de-wrinkle hanging clothes, much like a traditional steamer . You want to make sure an iron with a vertical steam feature also has anti-drip safety features, so extremely hot water doesn't leak out and cause harm. Whether vertical or horizontal, it's important that the steam output is powerful, because that's what distinguishes a steam iron from a dry iron.

Portability

You should take into account the weight of the steam iron. A lightweight iron may be easier to use and put away than a heavier iron. So, if you're only using your steam iron to complete crafty projects every now and then, or if you have trouble lifting objects and would benefit from using a lighter iron, take that into consideration. Bonus points if the handle has a comfortable grip, too.

Plus, it's pretty nice to have an iron with a retractable cord so you can iron traditionally and then retract the cord for easy storage. We love the Black+Decker ICR2020 , our best value pick, for this very reason!

Safety Features

You should always look for the safety features on an iron. Common safety features include an automatic shut-off feature or anything that prevents water from dripping. Each model's automatic shut-off feature is a bit different. Some models, including our best overall pick, the Beautural 1800-Watt Steam Iron , will automatically shut off if not used after a certain period of time. Some will also begin cooling down if left in an upright position for too long. Remember, you should always unplug your iron when it's not in use, but a safety shut-off feature is still a huge sigh of relief in our book.

You should also look for an anti-drip feature. This keeps the iron from dripping water out of the soleplate. Dripping water obviously isn't safe around electrical cords, and it also can create frustrating water stains on garments . Look to our best basic pick, the Sunbeam Classic 1200-Watt Mid-Size Anti-Drip Non-Stick Soleplate Iron , for an anti-drip feature.

Retractable Cord

A retractable cord is a useful feature when ironing. You get the power that comes from a corded steam iron, but you're able to store the iron away until your next laundry day with no bulky cord. For a model with a retractable cord, consider our best value pick, the Black+Decker ICR2020 Steam Iron .

Digital Screen

Many new steam iron models—such as our best overall option, the Beautural 1800-Watt Steam Iron —feature a digital screen that displays heat settings, temperature, and other useful information. If you're investing in an iron with a digital screen, make sure it enhances your ironing experience by showing essential details, such as exact temperature and which fabric setting you are on.

Self-Clean Option

One essential rule to ironing: Clean your iron on a regular basis to prevent mineral deposits from building up and blocking steam vents. Some irons, such as the Beautural ( best overall ), come with a self-clean option that takes care of this chore for you. Each model is different, but in order to use the self-cleaning function, place your iron over a sink and hold down the self-cleaning button until all of the water has drained from the soleplate. Once the water reservoir has emptied, release the self-cleaning button.

Yes! You can use your steam iron without steam. This is known as a dry iron. Dry irons work well on satin, silk, and wool. Using your steam iron as a dry iron is a cinch. Just empty the water reservoir, or dial it to its "dry iron" setting and iron as usual.

The life of a steam iron varies based on the quality of the iron, as well as how often you use it. For the most part, a top-notch steam iron can last 10 years, while lower quality ones might decrease in effectiveness after a couple of years. That's why we recommend our best overall option, the Beautural 1800-Watt Steam Iron . It has everything you need in a quality iron: it removes wrinkles without much effort, it heats in seconds, and it has an automatic shut-off feature for safety.

For optimal performance, empty the water from your iron's reservoir when you're done ironing. This will help prevent mineral buildup inside the iron. It will also prevent any accidental spills or leakage when storing your steam iron. Pozniak recommends using distilled water instead of tap . "Mineral buildup will kill an iron faster than anything else," he cautions.

Rather not worry about remembering to empty out your iron? "If you don’t want to add water to your iron, you can use a spray mister and lightly mist your garment to dampen it slightly before using a dry iron," Pozniak says. "This is helpful when ironing cotton or linen, and you want a nice finish."

How to choose a travel iron in the uk.

  • For More Efficient Heating,  Pick a Higher Wattage
  • Choose a Maximum Temperature of at Least 140°C
  • If You Want to Steam Garments, Opt for an 80 ML Water Tank
  • Look for an Iron With a Long Power Cord but a Small Overall Size and Weight

Select an Iron With a Wattage of at Least 400 W for Faster Heating

Select an Iron With a Wattage of at Least 400 W for Faster Heating

For more power and faster heating, you should look for a device with as high a wattage as possible. A standard household iron is around 1100 watts , so this is a good number to aim for if you want a travel iron that works as effectively as a full-sized one.

In general, though, most travel irons are much smaller and less powerful. While this is fine for temporary use, we recommend selecting one with a wattage of at least 400 W to ensure that you can keep your clothes crumple-free on your trip.

Cut down on chores while you travel with one of these non-iron shirts .

Aim for a Maximum Temperature of at Least 140°C to Tackle Tough Creases in Various Fabrics

Aim for a Maximum Temperature of at Least 140°C to Tackle Tough Creases in Various Fabrics

Much like wattage, the maximum temperature on a travel iron won't necessarily need to be as high as a full-sized model. Since your clothes should only be prone to minor creases from packing, aiming for a maximum temperature of around 140°C should be enough to cover most of your travel needs.

However, with such a wide range of fabrics on the market, one heat setting won't always be suitable for all garments. For particularly tough creases in clothes made from cotton, linen or rayon, your iron will need to reach 190-230°C .

Consider a Water Tank With a Capacity of Over 100 ML if You Intend to Use the Steam Settings Extensively

Consider a Water Tank With a Capacity of Over 100 ML if You Intend to Use the Steam Settings Extensively

If you prefer an iron with a steaming setting, you will need to look out for a product with a water tank. The water tank on a full-sized iron tends to be around 300 ml , but travel-sized options can't normally accommodate such large tanks.

To steam iron a few garments at a time, a water tank of around 80 ml should be sufficient . However, if you plan to use the steam setting a lot, look for a larger tank that can hold 100-150 ml as this will save you repeated trips to the sink to fill up!

Try a clothes steamer for low-maintenance crease management.

Select a Small, Lightweight Iron to Make Travelling Simple, but Opt for a Power Cord of at Least 1 Metre for Convenience

Select a Small, Lightweight Iron to Make Travelling Simple, but Opt for a Power Cord of at Least 1 Metre for Convenience

If you're only using carry-on luggage or you have limited space in your suitcase, you should check the  dimensions and weight of the iron before purchasing. Anything up to 700 g won't be too cumbersome and will be  sturdy as well as lightweight . Irons in the 1-2 kg range tend to be tougher and less prone to damage but may cause you to go over your baggage limit.

One aspect you won't want to cut back on is the cord length  — in fact,  the cord should be as long as possible if you want to make ironing on the go convenient and avoid having to sit right by the plug socket. Cords measuring at least 1 metre will be suitable for most environments but 2 metres will be even handier.

There is no water tank on this iron so it sadly won't be a suitable choice if you like to steam your clothes. Still, if size and weight are your main concerns, there's no better option on the market.

Whether you’re a busy mom who’s always on the go or a business traveler, finding time to style your hair can be tough.

That’s why it’s important to invest in a good travel curling iron that will help you achieve bouncy curls without taking up too much space in your suitcase.

Whether you have short hair, thick hair, wavy hair, or fine hair, we’ve got you covered.

So, if you’re looking for a mini curling iron that will give you gorgeous curls without damaging your hair, look no further.

A Quick Look at the Travel Curling Irons We Review

Here is a quick look at the curling irons we review later in this blog.

ten best travel iron

Keep reading for a more detailed review of each travel curling iron, if you can bring a curling iron in carry on luggage, and info for international travel needs.

Can you Bring a Mini Curling Iron on a Plane?

According to the TSA, in the USA you can bring your mini curling iron on a plane in your carry on luggage or checked baggage. The only caveat for carry on baggage is that it’s a travel curling iron with an electric cord, not butane powered.

Can I Pack my Travel Curling Iron in Carry on Luggage? The Answer is Yes.

All of our recommendations below are for travel curling irons that are allowed in your carry on in the USA. Outside of the USA, I’m not sure. I strongly suggest checking the rules for the country you’re flying to for their rules on hair styling tools.

Dual Voltage Curling Iron for International Travel

You can skip this section and scroll down if you’re traveling domestically within North America.

If you’re traveling internationally, you may need a dual voltage curling iron. Seven of the ten curling irons we reviewed are dual voltage curling irons, so please take this into consideration if you’re traveling outside of North America.

ten best travel iron

It’s also a good idea to check on the plug type of the country you’re traveling to. Your new travel curling iron may need a special adapter, in addition to being dual voltage, to be used outside of North America.

Below are a few examples of the plug type, voltage, and adapter type for hair styling tools a North American would need for travel to the below countries. The plug type and adapter type are from the International Electrotechnical Commission and are consistent throughout the world.

If the country you’re traveling to isn’t listed, just Google the country you’re traveling to and what voltage and plug type they use. If the voltage is above 127, you will need a dual voltage curling iron. If the plug type is other than A or B, you will need an adapter.

And now, let’s get to the travel curling iron reviews…

Thankfully, due to its USB-chargeable in-built batteries, this product can help save you from all the unnecessary hassle of dealing with plugs and voltages that don’t match.

However, some might find the barrel to be a bit too short, and even though it heats up pretty quickly in a matter of seconds to deliver consistent curls, it still takes a “hot minute” or two to cool down.

Stretch Linen Pull-On Pants

Best Linen Travel Pants

Onia stretch linen pull-on pants.

But if you don't want to roll up to the airport in baggy sweats , or sit all stuffy in a suit for four hours, we've found the compromise. From Vuori to Lululemon to Bonobos, some of our favorite labels have created pants specially made for travel , the kinds of designs that blend the performance and comfort of a jogger with the look of a traditional trouser.

These hybrids feature elastic waistbands, added stretch , and other properties that’ll allow you to move nimbly through terminals. Some even have drawstrings and are made of materials ideal for breaking a sweat when you have to sprint to your gate, all while giving off the appearance of the pants you’d wear to the office. They're picks that we've tried, tested, and loved—whether we were traveling on an international, overseas flight or just going a domestic few hours. Below, 16 of the best travel pants, just ready and waiting to take you on your next adventure in comfort and style.

With a silhouette that'll work for most body types, and treated with wrinkle-resistant technology, Amazon's in-house label has once again offered up an affordable style that's too good to pass up.

Mack Weldon hits the mark with these travel-ready Radius pants. Not only is the high-tech fabric water-resistant and quick-drying (no need to worry about spills too much), but it is also extremely comfortable. So if you're not partial to wearing the brand's travel-ready Ace sweats , these are the next best thing.

Trust that Lululemon always pays careful attention to comfort, performance, and functionality. And its celebrated Commission pants—which are made of wrinkle-resistant, quick-drying, shape-retaining, breathable fabric—are a shining example of this sentiment.

Vuori offers styles built for sweat-breaking activity outdoors. So best believe that these incredibly sleek pants, made of the brand's DuraTerra ripstop fabric, are more than enough for traveling long distances in a climate-controlled environment.

Bonobos? On a list about the best pants? Of course! The brand specializes in creating bottoms for all occasions, including travel. Case in point: this garment-dyed, five-pocket jean with so much stretch that it almost—just almost —feels like a pair of sweats.

No pants round up is complete without Everlane, the master of sophisticated comfort. These guys are sweat-wicking, quick-drying, and made of 4-way stretch, and if that's not enough, well then we don't know what is.

They're chinos, but, like, the extra comfortable version. Dressy, stretchy, and ultra soft, these pants are going to be perfect for when you have to hop off the plane and hit a work dinner. Throw on a button-up and sport coat and you're good to go.

Rhone established itself as mainstay of the running scene—and for good reason. But it also offer nifty styles for traveling, like these pants made of its Flex-Knit fabric, which is so comfortable, so easy to move in, so stretchy, and so sleek at that you'll never look at traditional trousers the same way again.

Don't worry, we didn't forget about Alo. You can wear these pants from the plane to the hotel gym, without having to slow your roll and change. Plus, the moisture-wicking material is the underrated hero of the day.

Linen is the most breathable material, a fabric that allows for maximum ventilation while you're crammed in a seat, waiting for an airline attendant to pass the pretzels. And don't even get us started on stretch linen. These pants from Onia are the lightest style you can wear on a fully booked, claustrophobia-inducing flight.

Tommy Hilfiger Stretch Travel Pants

Stretch Travel Pants

Even though these have the grace of chinos, and a slim-fit that's become an icon of Tommy Hilfiger, they're still one of the best travel pants on the market. That's because they have everything you want—stretch, comfort, softness—while still looking chic and classy.

Banana Republic Brushed Traveler Cargo Pants

Brushed Traveler Cargo Pants

Thank goodness for brands like Banana Republic, who understand the importance of traveling in style so thoroughly that it makes stylish pants for traveling. These are softer than a typical cargo pant thanks to their brushed material, but with a slouchy fit and abundance of pockets, they have all the easy, breezy functionality of cargos.

ATG by Wrangler Synthetic Utility Casual Pants

Synthetic Utility Casual Pants

Wrangler makes some of our all-time favorite jeans , and its other pants are nothing we're turning our noses up at, either. These have the chic appeal of khakis, but with stretchy comfort, deep pockets, and a wrinkle-resistant fabric, you can take on a flight with no problem.

L.L. Bean Multisport Pants

Multisport Pants

When you're on the go, an elasticated drawstring waistband is the best travel companion you could ever hope to have. These lightweight pants have four-way stretch (so you can sprint to your gate when the security line is longer than expected) and a straight leg that won't wrinkle.

Uniqlo Smart Ankle Pants

Smart Ankle Pants

Uniqlo's pants have it all. They're stretchy, soft, and breathable. They're versatile—don't restrict yourself to wearing them just for travel—and they're chic, with an ankle-grazing hem and straight legs.

Stone Island Logo-Appliquéd Twill Cargo Trousers

Logo-Appliquéd Twill Cargo Trousers

If you're here, I'm assuming you're a guy who likes to travel in style. And if you like to travel in style, Stone Island's cargo trousers need to be on your radar. With a relaxed (yet stylish!) look and plenty of pocket space to hold a passport, boarding pass, and whatever else you need, these are infallible.

Tips for Buying

shape, rectangle

Listen—no one knows how you travel better than you do. Maybe you're a guy who likes to pace the aisles of the plane, maybe you're a guy who spills his ginger ale every damn time there's turbulence, maybe you're a guy who sits in the window seat, falls asleep, and stays put. There are pants to accommodate all of those things.

Whatever your habits are, look for pants that pertain to them. I would recommend loose, baggy fits and elastic waistbands every time for maximum comfort, but if you want to stay sleek and sharp, there are chino-style, flex-fabric options that still put the business in casual. Something water-resistant is great for long-haul flights, because you never know what could happen. And when in doubt, always, always, look for pants that you aren't going to groan and grumble at putting on for a red-eye.

Frequently Asked Questions

shape, rectangle

What's the best way to fold travel pants?

Technically, you should be wearing your travel pants, so they shouldn't really need to be folded up and stuffed in a suitcase. But if you do pack 'em up for whatever reason, rolling instead of folding is a great way to ensure those wrinkle-free pants stay, well, wrinkle-free.

How should I style my travel pants?

This part is entirely down to preference. Well—not entirely. It's always smart to layer up when you travel, so no matter which pants you pick to wear as your bottoms, have a few options you can wear with them on top. For chicer styles, this could mean a sweater or a button-down and a blazer. If you're okay with going more casual, though, a tee and hoodie is never a bad look.

How do I care for my travel pants?

When it comes to care, look to the directions on the tag or website of your pants. Most styles are okay to be washed in cold water, but to stay on the safe side, double-check everything.

Why You Can Trust Esquire

shape, rectangle

We don't write about how great things are if they aren’t actually great. Every product in Esquire’s round-ups are carefully curated by our fashion and e-commerce teams.

When it comes to something like travel pants, you can rest assured that we’re hand-selecting styles that we’ve personally tested, tried, and loved, along with pants that the rest of our stylish colleagues here at Esquire endorse for their own travels.

Every pick on this list (and our other lists!) comes from years of wearing different things, seeing what we love and what we don’t, and going from there. No two sets of legs are the same, and no two men are the same. Your proverbial mileage may vary. But if you’re looking for the right place to start, with advice from folks who and care (possibly too much!) about this sort of stuff, this is the place to be.

Runner-Up: AXA Assistance USA Travel Insurance

AXA Assistance USA  offers consumers a great option for no-stress travel insurance: low-priced plans, generous coverage limits on key categories including primary insurance on lost luggage, and up to 150% reimbursement for qualifying trip cancellations.

Best Low-Cost Travel Insurance Option: Trawick International Travel Insurance

Trawick International Travel Insurance  is another medically robust insurance provider that can help higher-risk and anxious travelers find peace of mind while on the road. This company offers one of the most generous medical evacuation policies in the market, although travelers will need to remember to add on rental car coverage if they need it.

Trawick Travel Insurance Review

Best Travel Insurance for Road Trips: Travelex Travel Insurance

Travelex Travel Insurance  offers three plans:

  • Travel Basic
  • Travel Select
  • Travel America

The Travelex American plan is meant for trips limited to the US, but it has the highest coverage limits in many areas compared to its other programs. If you're flying somewhere, the lost baggage limits are higher. Its natural strengths shine for road trippers, though. Travelex America adds coverage for roadside service and rental car coverage for unexpected accidents. It also covers pets should you be involved in an accident while on the road.

While your standard auto insurance does extend to car rentals within the US for a limited time, any accident would affect future rates. Travelex would eliminate the risk of reporting to your auto insurance provider for minor incidents within its purview.

Introduction to Travel Insurance

Why travel insurance is a must-have.

The unpredictable nature of traveling – from flight cancellations to medical emergencies – can turn your dream vacation into a nightmare. Travel insurance acts as a personal safeguard, ensuring that unexpected events don't drain your wallet or ruin your trip.

Understanding Different Types of Travel Insurance

Not all travel insurance policies are created equal. From single-trip travel insurance policies to annual travel insurance plans , from minimal coverage to comprehensive protection, understanding the spectrum of options is your first step in finding the right fit for your journey.

Key Features to Look for in Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance for medical emergencies.

Imagine falling ill in a foreign country; daunting, right? A robust travel insurance plan ensures you don't have to worry about the financial aspect of receiving medical care while traveling , even in the most remote corners of the globe.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Benefits

Life is full of surprises, some less pleasant than others. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage ensures that you're not left out of pocket if unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel or cut your trip short.

Coverage for Personal Belongings and Baggage Loss

Losing your belongings is more than an inconvenience; it's losing a piece of your world. Insurance that covers personal belongings and baggage loss ensures that you're compensated for your loss, helping you to rebound and continue your adventure.

Support and Assistance Services

In times of trouble, having a lifeline can make all the difference. Look for insurance that offers 24/7 support and assistance services, giving you peace of mind that help is just a phone call away.

Choosing Travel Insurance

Reputation and reliability of the travel insurance provider.

A provider's reputation is not just about being well-known; it's about reliability, customer satisfaction, and the ability to deliver on promises. Researching and choosing a reputable provider is a cornerstone in ensuring your safety and satisfaction.

Understanding the Policy's Fine Print

The devil is in the details, and understanding the fine print of what your travel insurance policy covers is crucial. Be aware of coverage limits, exclusions, and the process for filing a claim to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Customer Reviews and Feedback

In the age of information, customer reviews and feedback are goldmines of insight. Learn from the experiences of others to gauge the reliability and customer service of the insurance provider you're considering.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Travel Insurance

Knowing your policy inside out.

Familiarize yourself with every aspect of your policy – what it covers, what it doesn't, how to file a claim, and who to contact in an emergency. Being informed means being prepared.

Steps to Take When a Problem Arises

If you face an issue during your travels, knowing the immediate steps to take can make all the difference. Keep important contacts and your policy details handy, and remember, your insurance provider is there to assist you.

How to Pick the Best Travel Insurance Company for You

There isn't a one-size-fits-all policy that works perfectly for every traveler. Young, healthy solo travelers can opt for much cheaper plans that offer bare-bones coverage, while families juggling complex itineraries will do best by investing in a robust policy that can help defray any costs associated with lost baggage, delayed transportation or other trip-impeding obstacles.

That being said, you can't go wrong with a travel insurance provider that boasts a reputable history and offers a wide range of customizable plans. In some cases, you may be comparing plans that are only a few dollars' apart from each other. In such situations, you should generally opt for the insurance company that offers the strongest customer service. It's also worth considering whether or not the travel insurance provider has been reviewed by other travelers with similar itineraries to your own.

An insurance aggregator like InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth is one of the best tools for searching travel insurance policies. Once you input the specifics of your travel itinerary, you'll be able to see hundreds of search results to compare the ones that catch your eye. If the options are too overwhelming, use the filters to the left of your search page to eliminate as many irrelevant plans as possible.

Yes, travel insurance typically offers some coverage of canceled flights, but if this benefit is important to you, make sure you read the fine print of your policy to make sure it offers adequate reimbursement. If you think you may need to cancel your travel plans, you should consider purchasing cancel for any reason (CFAR) travel insurance .

Travel insurance will pay out if you experience a covered event, such as a travel delay or delayed or lost baggage. If you're looking to get travel insurance for a specific reason, such as needing to potentially cancel your trip, make sure your policy will cover you in that situation before purchasing it.

Most comprehensive travel insurance policies include medical coverage that can come in handy if an emergency occurs and you need medical evacuation. Some travel insurance plans offer more specialized coverage for travelers with preexisting conditions, so shop around if medical coverage is a top priority for you.

$100,000 should be a sufficient medical coverage limit for travel insurance. If you're planning on doing extreme sports or anything particularly risky on your trip, you may want to increase your coverage level. A high medical coverage limit is especially useful when you're purchasing cruise travel insurance, since medical evacuations are more involved at sea.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Chose The Best Travel Insurance Companies

To come up with our list of the best travel insurance companies, we evaluated each insurer based on the following factors:

Guide Methodology: What We Considered

Policy Types

Travel insurance is essential, but often underused partly because people aren't getting what they want. Business Insider's 2023 travel study showed 10.65% of travelers surveyed bought cancel for any reason insurance. Cost may be a factor, but in many cases, the coverage is more affordable than you might think. Regardless, companies must offer a diverse range of coverage options. We award 5 stars to companies offering all standard coverages and additional options like pet and sports equipment protection.

Our 2022 travel study indicated the majority of purchases were made through the travel provider (ex: flight protection insurance when you're purchasing your airline tickets). While these may be sufficient for some customers, we look for companies offering a more comprehensive range of services.

According to the US Travel Insurance Association, the average cost of travel insurance will be between 4% and 8% of total travel expenses. Anything beyond that price point should include additional benefits beyond the standard inclusions, such as CFAR protection or upgraded medical coverage. Anything below that 4% threshold may leave you lacking important or sufficient coverage in an emergency.

Convenience and Flexibility

Whether you're an infrequent traveler or a suitcase warrior, a good travel insurance company should have you covered. In many cases, you might not even have to talk to a person in order to purchase your policy.

Many people think of travel insurance in context with specific trips, but most of these top contenders sell both single-trip and multi-trip policies, also known as annual travel insurance. Some companies also offer plans specifically designed for cruisers, students abroad, and business travelers. (Read our guide to the best cruise travel insurance companies for more details.) Finally, all of these providers offer multiple options for getting the specific areas and amounts of coverage that you want.

Claims Handling

Most travelers never have a large claim. Premiums are low, and it provides peace of mind for the just in case situations. So they leave reviews based on their reduced stress levels. But what happens if you lose your luggage or have to stay a few extra days due to an unexpected accident? Will your insurance carrier cover your claim without all the hassle? We check real customer reviews to sort this out for you.

Ease of Use and Support

When purchasing, during your trip, and throughout the claims process, you may need extra support. Does the company have a 24/7 help line? Does it have an online or mobile system allowing you to self-manage? Essentially, what are the options when you need help? We look at the big picture to evaluate the average customer experience with each company.

You can read our full insurance rating methodology for even more details.

10 Best Greece Cruises, According to Travel Experts

These are the best Greece cruises for island hopping with ease.

ten best travel iron

Courtesy of Variety Cruises

With its stunning beaches, rich history, iconic landmarks, and delectable cuisine, a trip to Greece is always a great idea. However, since the nation is home to more than 6,000 islands — some of which are only accessible by boat — your best bet is to explore via cruise. Just take it from Rob Clabbers, Travel + Leisure A-List travel advisor and Q Cruise + Travel founder, who tells T+L that “Greece and the Greek isles are just the perfect destinations to explore by ship” since “a cruise allows you to see more islands and gives you a unique vantage point.” Several of the best Greece cruises also include visits to neighboring countries like Turkey and Italy, for example, which allow travelers to experience several cultures and countries in one action-packed trip. Intrigued? We don’t blame you: Ahead, check out our favorite Greece cruises for every type of traveler, along with itinerary recommendations and expert insight.

Meet the Expert

Rob Clabbers is a T+L A-List travel advisor and founder of Q Cruise + Travel, a Chicago-based travel agency.

Mary Curry is a T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist.

Kari Dillon is the owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, an agency specializing in theme park and cruise vacations.

Megan Guinnup is a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels.

Windstar Cruises

Courtesy of Windstar

According to Clabbers, this small luxury cruise line is perfect for those who prefer “a smaller, more casual yacht-style experience.” Per the pro, the onboard vibes are best described as “upscale, but not stuffy or over-the-top.” It’s also worth noting that “each ship offers a water sports platform with kayaks, water trampolines, stand-up paddling, snorkel gear, floating carpets, and other ‘toys’ that are deployed (weather and location permitting, of course) at least once on most Greek itineraries.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Windstar’s Greece itineraries, Clabbers is quick to call out the popular Treasures of the Greek Isles voyage, which sets sail each week from May through October. Passengers can visit beloved ports of call like Mykonos and Santorini, along with “lesser-known (and less-crowded!) places like Monemvasia and Patmos.” As part of the experience, guests have the unique opportunity to feast among the ruins in neighboring Turkey as part of the line’s complimentary Evening in Ephesus “after-hours” event, which, per Clabbers, features a decadent five-course dinner accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Speaking of culinary offerings, it’s worth mentioning that Windstar is the official cruise line partner of the esteemed James Beard Foundation, which means you can expect some of the top eats at sea.

Explora Journeys

Courtesy of Explora Cruises

“A new entrant in the luxury travel industry, Explora Journeys offers all the style and comfort of a modern European luxury resort property on its 922-guest yacht-inspired Explora I and, launching later this year, Explora II, ” explains Clabbers. The line has taken the industry by storm, doing away with cliche cruise staples like main dining rooms, large buffets, and notoriously small staterooms. Instead, says Clabbers, guests can choose from a selection of “excellent restaurants that other companies would call specialty restaurants,” as well as “four swimming pools, each with their own vibe,” and all-suite accommodations, some of which boast private plunge pools. Per the pro, it’s worth noting that “Explora Journeys is the first luxury line that offers a dedicated youth activity program and facility year-round;” as such, it’s an excellent option for multi-generational families looking to cruise Greece in style.

Itinerary: Sailing round-trip from Athens, the aptly named eight-night A Journey from Athens to Athens itinerary includes a mix of popular ports like Mykonos and Santorini, along with hidden-gem locales like Syros, which is famous for its neoclassical architecture, a buzzy main town, and (essentially) crowd-free beaches. The cruise also visits the serene resort town of Marmaris in Turkey before heading to its final port of call, Kos , a gorgeous Greek island known for its sandy beaches, white-washed buildings, and historical sites.

Celebrity Cruises

Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

According to Clabbers, " Celebrity Cruises was launched by a Greek shipping family," so the line has deep ties to — and many officers who hail from — the country. What’s more, he says, "When you visit Greece, they are taking you to their homeland, and it shows in their passion and love of the Hellenic nation." The line offers a range of larger ships and, thus, more options between accommodations (from economical inside rooms to luxurious suites in The Retreat), itineraries, restaurants, and entertainment; as such, Celebrity is "a great option for adults and families who like more activities on their ship."

Itinerary: The nine-night Best Of Greece itinerary cruises round-trip from Athens on select dates from May to October and takes place aboard the 2,170-passenger Celebrity Infinity , which Clabbers described as one of the line’s “smaller and more seasoned ships.” The first port of call is Santorini, followed by Ephesus in Turkey and Mykonos. “Additionally,” says Clabbers, " Infinity   travels to Volos and Thessaloniki, ports that are not typically visited by large ships.” Kavala, located in the northern part of the country, serves as the final port of call before heading back to Athens. Here, cruisers can enjoy a mix of history, culture, and architecture — plus some seriously stunning landscapes (from lagoons and lakes to wetlands and beaches) along with lush flora and fauna.

Related: What to Know About All 16 Ships in the Celebrity Cruises Fleet

Courtesy of Silversea cruises

Silversea offers a variety of Greece cruise itineraries, and it’s one of few truly luxe all-inclusive cruise lines. Per Clabbers, the 596-passenger Silver Moon offers all-suite accommodations and a classic small-ship feel — complete with excellent meals, beverages, and shore excursions all included in your cruise fare. Speaking of the latter, he says, “The inclusion of shore excursions also makes it easy to dive deeper into Greek culture and culinary experiences.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Silversea’s Greek itineraries, Clabbers especially recommends the seven-night Athens to Athens cruise, which “calls on highlights, but adds places like Souda Bay in Crete, Nafplion, Patmos, and Rhodes ,” where he recommends visiting the “temple ruins at Lindos, with views over the Mediterranean, and then walk in the footsteps of the Crusaders in the old town.” The cruise also stops in Nafplion, which, despite its romantic seaside setting and lovely beaches, is yet to be uncovered by most American travelers — for now, at least.

Variety Cruises

According to T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist Mary Curry , this local Greek cruise line offers its own fleet of yachts, most carrying fewer than 50 passengers. Since the ships are so small, says Curry, “you can travel a bit further off the beaten path.” Variety offers a handful of Greece itineraries, including specially themed hiking and wine cruises.

Itinerary: Travelers craving a true off-the-beaten-path experience can book the seven-night Unexplored Greece voyage, which sails round-trip from Athens. The first port of call is Ikira, a tiny island known for its hot springs that also happens to be one of the world’s Blue Zones. Then, it’s off to Patmos, known for its fascinating history and unspoiled beaches, before overnighting in Lipsi, a laid-back isle famous for its gorgeous scenery. On board, guests can taste the destination’s famous wine, Aposperitis. The fun continues in Levintha, inhabited by a single family who raises animals and runs a restaurant where guests can enjoy fresh-caught fish. After, it’s off to Amorgos, where scenic hiking and beautiful beaches abound. The next day, you’ll stop at Panagia Hozoviotissa, a cliffside monastery dating back to the 10th century, before heading to Koufonisia, which boasts majestic caves and rock pools accessible only by boat (thankfully, Variety as you covered). The final stop of the day is the serene island of Iraklia, which offers clear-blue waters ideal for swimming. After remaining here overnight, you’ll head to the final port of call, Serifos, where guests can visit a remote beach, followed by an onboard BBQ feast to refuel before heading to Chora, a fairy-tale village.

Courtesy of Ponant Cruises

This French-owned cruise line offers an impressive fleet of small luxury ships. Additionally, says Curry, “Most cabins have private balconies, and travelers who plan early are rewarded with excellent value for the money.” What’s especially unique about Pontant, explains the pro, is that they “partner with Smithsonian Journeys on select departures to offer an enrichment program of included lectures and shore excursions in each port.”

Itinerary: Curry especially recommends the seven-night Cruising the Greek Islands of the Southern Aegean sailing, which will cruise round-trip from Athens in July and October 2025. The cruise calls on aforementioned spots like Patmos, Rhodes, and Amorgos before visiting Adamas in Milos, a volcanic island teeming with postcard-worthy white-washed towns and breathtakingly beautiful beaches. Adamas itself is a tiny fishing port where colorful boats shimmer against the blue waters. Finally, it’s off to Mykonos and Napflion before finally disembarking in Athens.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line is world-famous for its exciting onboard offerings for children of all ages — including character and superhero meet-and-greets, dining options themed after beloved Disney princesses, and live performances galore — making it a favorite for families hoping for a fun-filled Greece vacation.

Itinerary: "Setting sail aboard the Disney Dream on the seven-night Mediterranean with Greek Isles itinerary is nothing short of magical!" says Megan Guinnup , a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels . Cruising round-trip from Rome, the ship calls on Naples before exploring Greece. In addition to popular ports like Athens and Mykonos, you'll also visit Chania on the island of Crete, which offers a bustling harbor, exquisite architecture, and cobblestone streets that look like they were plucked straight from a (Disney) fairy tale. After exploring each locale, the fun continues back on board, where, per the pro, "there is enchantment everywhere — meeting beloved characters, enjoying deck parties with Mickey and Minnie, and indulging in exquisite cuisine."

Royal Caribbean

This mega-ship line truly has it all: Flashy entertainment and onboard activities — which, depending on the ship, can include everything from water slides to zip lines — and plenty of drinking and dining offerings to appease even the pickiest eaters. Guinnup and Kari Dillon, owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, recommend setting sail aboard Odyssey of the Seas , which offers several Greek itineraries. "On board," says Guinnup, "There's a plethora of activities to enjoy, from bumper cars and roller skating to exquisite dining and a bionic bar — there's something for everyone!"

Itinerary: The seven-night Greek Isles itinerary sails round-trip from Rome with stops in Santorini, Ephesus, Mykonos, and Naples. Keep in mind that because the ship is so large, Santorini and Mykonos are both tender ports. With that in mind, Dillon recommends springing on The Key, an optional add-on that includes priority tender access so that you can spend as much time as possible on land basking in its beauty.

Virgin Voyages

Richard Branson’s adults-only line has taken the industry by storm with its innovative offerings, including 20-plus restaurants instead of buffets, an onboard tattoo parlor, adult-focused entertainment offerings, and a two-story nightclub.

Itinerary: Dillon especially recommends the seven-night Greek Island Aglow itinerary for travelers seeking a high-energy, adults-only option. She continues, telling T+L, “Not only does this sail to the islands of Santorini and Rhodes, but it [also] has an overnight in Mykonos, which is world-famous for its lively party atmosphere.” As a bonus, the cruise also calls on Bodrum in Turkey, which boasts beautiful beaches, flower-filled cafes, and a bustling nightlife scene.

Celestyal Cruises

The Greece-based Celesytal Cruises prides itself on offering an authentic Greek vacation experience. Additionally, Celesytal is unique in that it offers year-round Aegean Sea sailings cruising round-trip from Athens and ranging in length from three to 14 nights. On land, Celeystal guests can choose from a selection of the line’s “Authentic Excursions,” which are specially curated, small-group, expert-led experiences designed to take travelers off the beaten path. Options — including walking food tours and pottery-making demos at a local factory — abound, depending on the particular port of call.

Itinerary: The seven-night Idyllic Aegean voyage visits Thessaloniki (which offers an eclectic combination of history, nightlife, and gastronomy), Kuşadası (a popular Turkish resort town), and Heraklion (the capital of Crete) before heading to iconic isles like Santorini and Mykonos, where the ship will remain overnight. Before returning to Athens for disembarkation, you’ll also stop in magnificent Milos.

Iron Man's 10 Most Clever Tech Upgrades Over His 11 Years In The MCU

  • Tony Stark's adaptability and genius have made him a powerful force in the MCU, constantly improving his designs.
  • Iron Man learns from past mistakes, turning failings into inspiration for his next models.
  • Stark's upgrades include gapless nanosuits, hand-to-hand combat skills, space travel readiness, and electric absorption.

Iron Man has proven time and time again that his adaptability and insatiable genius have been one of the most powerful forces in the MCU, constantly improving his designs from past mistakes. As the flagship character anchoring the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first few phases of the franchise's existence, Tony Stark has proven himself time and time again as a resourceful hero. Even if he never technically had any powers, Tony Stark's genius technology is one of the most powerful forces in the entire MCU.

Iron Man's many suits of armor and various other scientific innovations have resulted in some of the most impressive feats of heroism in the entire series, but his designs don't always start out perfect. Often, Tony's failings and technical obstacles serve him as inspiration, the genius inventor taking every failure as a lesson to be improved upon in the next model. No matter what limitations his creations may face in the field, Iron Man is always sure to never make the same mistake twice when it comes to his tech.

Iron Man Movies, Ranked From Worst To Best

Iron man switched to a gapless nanosuit after fighting ant-man, nanomachines don't have any chinks in the armor for scott to exploit.

The events of Captain America: Civil War taught Tony Stark a lot in terms of where he stood in comparison to his fellow Avengers. One of the more memorable moments in the movie's famed airport fight is when Ant-Man dives into the delicate internal mechanics of Tony's suit, wreaking havoc on his systems while taunting him all the while. Though Tony is able to flush him out with some fire suppressant, he makes sure not to give future enemies a chance to do the same with a gapless Nanosuit in Avengers: Infinity War .

Tony Stark Added A Heater To Spider-Man's Suit After Being Stranded In The Winter

New suits weren't just for fighting, but survival.

Iron Man 3 saw Tony Stark more stripped of his resources than ever before, and he certainly learned from experience. After a botched escape attempt, Iron Man is left stranded in the freezing winter of a rural Tennessee town, nearly freezing to death before enlisting the help of a local boy, Harley Keener . His close brush with hypothermia in the wilderness certainly made an impression, revealed when Iron Man demonstrates a heater function in Peter Parker's Spider-Man suit in Spider-Man: Homecoming .

After Losing To Captain America, Tony Improved His Hand-To-Hand Capabilities

Iron man can't always win with ranged attacks alone.

Previously to his fight with Captain America and the Winter Soldier, Iron Man primarily relied on his suit's ranged weaponry to take down foes from afar. However, after a loss against pure melee combatants Steve Rogers and Bucky in Captain America: Civil War , Tony had to re-think his reliance on repulsor blasts, lasers, and missiles. By Avenges: Endgame , Iron Man is a powerful enough melee combatant with his shape-shifting nanomachine weaponry to hold his own against Thanos, who was able to defeat The Hulk in hand-to-hand combat.

Iron Man Added A Holoshield After Losing Nanoparticles To Thanos

Relying on the suit alone for defense was a dangerous gambit.

Tony Stark's Nanosuit allowed him to shape anything he needed on the fly from flexible microscopic machines, including defensive weapons like shields. However, in a fight with Thanos, a devastating beam from the Power Stone wound up depleting most of the suit's particles when Iron Man used them to form a shield, leaving him vulnerable for the rest of the fight. To fix this, Iron Man later incorporates a Wakandan holoshield into his suit Avengers: Endgame .

The Iron Legion Were Given A Significant Upgrade

From expendable distractions to a verifiable army of androids.

Originally a project that Tony started tinkering with during his insomnia, the Iron Legion in Iron Man 3 proved to be relatively ineffective against superpowered villain Aldrich Killian , the automated suits quickly crumbling without Tony's direct supervision. After starting over with the Clean Slate Protocol, Tony Stark completely re-builds the Iron Legion by the time of Avengers: Age of Ultron . Here, the automatic suits are a force to be reckoned with, effectively saving Sokovian civilians and giving the Avengers some trouble after being hacked by Ultron.

After The Battle For New York, Iron Man Upgraded His Suit To Withstand Space Travel

Going through the chitauri portal left a lasting impact on tony stark.

Tony Stark was sure to account for extra-vehicular activity after going through the portal in The Avengers, a harrowing experienced he barely escaped from. The terror of entering outer space with no life support systems built to survive a vacuum left a lasting impact on Tony Stark , as evidenced by his trauma in Iron Man 3 . By the time another alien threat arrived in Avengers: Infinity War , Iron Man's suit was able to follow Ebony Maw's Q-Ship out of the Earth's atmosphere with no problems.

After Being Damaged By Electricity, Stark's Newer Suits Could Absorb It

Whiplash struck a dangerous nerve on tony's equipment.

Whiplash isn't a particularly well-remembered MCU villain in the grand scheme of the series, but his attack on the Formula 1 race in Monaco left Iron Man exposed to an elemental weakness of his mobile suit. Whiplash's suit was equipped with electric whips that managed to do heavy damage to the travel-sized Mark V, causing Tony to realize how dangerous electric attacks could be. By the time of The Avengers , Iron Man had not only mitigated this weakness, but turned it into a strength, able to harness Thor's lightning to overcharge his suit's power.

Iron Man Fixed The Icing Problem

Obidiah stane couldn't measure up to tony's troubleshooting.

The defeat of Iron Man's very first villain is perhaps one of the best examples of Tony Stark's ingenuity and constant vigilance for identifying and fixing flaws in his designs. After nearly falling to his death when high-altitude ice buildup made the Mark II drop out of the sky like a stone, Tony was able to remove the flaw with the use of a new gold-titanium alloy in the Mark III. As Obidiah Stane's Iron Monger suit hadn't yet considered this limitation, Iron Man was able to bait him into high atmosphere, letting the ice and gravity do the work.

Tony Stark Added Parachutes To Peter's Iron Spider Suit After Rhodey's Fall

Seeing war machine's fall was a wake-up call for iron man's designs.

When Vision accidentally sniped War Machine's arc reactor in a friendly fire incident in Captain America: Civil War , the resulting fall cost James Rhodes the use of his legs, the pilot being lucky to be alive at all. Devastated by seeing his close comrade's injury, Tony Stark was sure to incorporate high-altitude parachutes in his designs for Spider-Man's suits, even activating them remotely when he felt Peter was in too great a danger. It's surprising it took Rhodey's grave injury to bring the possibility of such a fall to Tony's attention.

Tony Stark Created Vision After Ultron's Failure

Tony and bruce's a.i. ranged from world-ending villain to noble hero.

The ultimate creation of Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, Ultron was an utter failure as a peacekeeping initiative, instead immediately declaring humanity morally bankrupt after spending five seconds on the internet. Luckily, when it came to ensuring Ultron's newest creation wouldn't follow in his father's footsteps, Stark and Banner were sure to introduce the A.I. J.A.R.V.I.S. into the formula, resulting in the creation of Vision, one of the strongest Avengers yet . A hero that could even rival Iron Man himself is by far Stark's best iterative creation.

Iron Man's 10 Most Clever Tech Upgrades Over His 11 Years In The MCU

'The Adam Project' & 9 Best Time Travel Movies on Netflix

For more mind-bending time travel adventures.

Read update

No matter the time period, time travel movies have always been popular. Whether it is the latest Ryan Reynolds and Netflix collaboration The Adam Project or the sci-fi action masterpiece The Terminator , time travel fans are spoiled for choice. Netflix in particular has plenty of great movies in the genre worth visiting, and some of the best time travel movies on Netflix will have you watching them over and over again.

In Netflix time travel movie The Adam Project , Ryan Reynolds plays a fighter pilot from the future, who crash lands in the present and meets his 12-year-old self. Together they must save the world in a journey that harkens back to Amblin classics from the 1980s while featuring some great needle drops.

Time travel stories have always been a popular narrative choice, with the highest-grossing film of all time, Avengers: Endgame , fitting in the genre. Videogames such as Mortal Kombat 11 also use time travel to great effect. But with The Adam Project being a Netflix original, there are more time travel movies on Netflix to watch after seeing Reynolds quip his way through another memorable performance.

Updated on May 28, 2023, by Ty Weinert:

10 'naked' (2017).

Marlon Wayans being thrown out of his wedding by Dennis Haysbert in Naked

Rob ( Marlon Wayans ) is about to marry the girl of his dreams, Megan ( Regina Hall ). But after a night out with his best friend results in Rob waking up naked in an elevator, he must race to the altar to make it in time. Failing that, Rob wakes up again in the elevator, realizing he is trapped in a time loop and must relive the hour over and over again.

Working like a mix of The Hangover and Groundhog Day , Naked will appeal to anyone who enjoyed those screwball comedies. While it is not one of the best time loop movies , it still offers some laughs and is a good enough way to kill an afternoon on the couch.

Watch on Netflix

9 'Captain Nova' (2021)

Kika Van De Vijver and a drone in Captain Nova

Like The Adam Project , Captain Nova follows a fighter pilot who is sent back in time to stop a catastrophe. Nova ( Kika Van De Vijver ) finds herself transformed into her younger self due to her journey through time, however, making it hard for adults to take her seriously as she warns them of the dangers to come.

Hailing from the Netherlands, Captain Nova makes for a nice change from the American movies that dominate the time travel genre on Netflix. Due to its protagonist's youthful transformation, Captain Nova is a kid-friendly take on the formula and can be enjoyed by the whole family.

8 'See You Yesterday' (2019)

Eden Duncan-Smith and Danté Crichlow in See You Yesterday

Produced by legendary director Spike Lee , See You Yesterday follows two teenage scientists, who are attempting to create a time machine. After one of their older brothers is killed in a police shooting, the pair activate their machine to travel to the past and save him.

While still following the conventions of time travel movies, See You Yesterday stands out with a plot that focuses on relevant social issues. By bringing light to matters that are still plaguing society four years after release, the film is a unique choice within the time travel Netflix catalog.

7 'In the Shadow of the Moon' (2019)

Boyd Holbrook standing closely behind Michael C. Hall In the Shadow of the Moon

Beginning in 1988, In the Shadow of the Moon follows Thomas Lockhart ( Boyd Holbrook ), a police officer determined to become a detective. When his city is plagued by a serial killer, Lockhart begins investigating, eventually discovering the killer comes back every nine years. As the case deepens, time travel eventually becomes a factor.

In the Shadow of the Moon feels like a callback to the detective thrillers of the '90s, like Se7en . While it does tend to lose focus as more outrageous plot points are introduced, In the Shadow of the Moon remains a solid choice for anyone looking to discover their next crime obsession.

6 'Synchronic' (2019)

Jamie Dornan and Anthony Mackie in Synchronic

Another quality entry in acclaimed duo Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson 's trippy shared universe , Synchronic stars Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan as paramedics and lifelong friends. After a new drug sweeps their city, resulting in the deaths of its users, the pair investigates after Dornan's daughter goes missing.

The film delves into time travel in ways that will not be spoiled here, but needless to say Synchronic is a trippy film with a central mystery that unravels over time. Both leads excel in their roles and share great chemistry, with Mackie, in particular, delivering a fantastic performance that shows what he can offer when given more meaty roles outside the MCU.

5 'ARQ' (2016)

Robbie Amell in ARQ

Waking up to intruders breaking into his home, an engineer ( Robbie Amell ) finds himself trapped within a time loop. With each death sending him back to the start of the invasion, he works to defeat his pursuers and escape with his lover ( Rachael Taylor ).

ARQ works as a sci-fi spin on films such as Happy Death Day , with the audience learning new information alongside the protagonist with each subsequent loop and eventual death. While not as charming as Happy Death Day , ARQ still offers an enjoyable take on the genre.

4 'When We First Met' (2018)

Adam DeVine in When We First Met

When We First Met follows Adam DeVine , of Workaholics fame, as he repeatedly goes back in time to try and win over the girl of his dreams ( Alexandra Daddario ). Being a romantic comedy, the film stands apart from other time travel movies that focus on more serious consequences.

While We First Met does not offer much new to the genre, though DeVine gives an admirable performance to help carry the film. Fans of his stand-up or the aforementioned Workaholics should have a good time watching his numerous attempts to escape the hellish nightmare called "the friend zone."

3 'Long Story Short' (2021)

Zahra Newman, Rafe Spall, and Ronny Chieng in Long Story Short

Waking up the morning after his wedding to discover that his life is jumping forward in time every few minutes, Teddy ( Rafe Spall ) is forced to use his dwindling time to stay with the woman he loves. With every jump causing them to drift further apart, time is running out for the bumbling lead.

Like When We First Met , Long Story Short uses time travel in a romantic comedy , albeit in a more urgent way. The Australian film was directed by Josh Lawson , known to audiences as Kano, the best part of the recent Mortal Kombat film.

2 'The Adam Project' (2022)

Ryan Reynolds and Zoe Saldana in The Adam Project

When fighter pilot Adam Reed (Ryan Reynolds) travels from 2050 to 2012, he is forced to work together with his 12-year-old self in order to get back home and save his deceased wife Laura ( Zoe Saldana ). The two Adams end up going on a journey full of heart and humor as they travel through time.

The latest in the long line of big-budget blockbusters on Netflix, The Adam Project is one of the best free movies you can access on the service. Reynolds is always a charming lead, and along with Saldana, they are supported by a winning cast that includes Mark Ruffalo , Jennifer Garner , and Catherine Keener .

1 'Mirage' (2018)

A poster for Mirage

When Vera ( Adriana Ugarte ) and her family move into a new home, they discover that a boy died there thirty years ago. Finding a way to communicate with the boy in the past, Vera warns him of his death and saves his life, only to change the flow of time in the process.

As the best time travel movie Netflix has to offer, Mirage is a compelling mystery thriller from Spain. As more circumstances of the boy's death emerge, greater narrative threads are pulled into this time-bending journey, with Ugarte delivering a great performance as the central character.
