The Smile Live Review: Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood’s project deliver anti-rock masterclass

As the wall of eyes tour kicks off in dublin, the smile continue to explore new musical waters.

Thom Yorke performing with The Smile, Dublin, March 7, 2024

3 Arena, Dublin, 7 March, 2024

A few weeks after OK Computer raised the bar for modern music in 1997, Radiohead played the biggest live show of their early career in Dublin’s RDS Showgrounds Arena alongside Massive Attack and Teenage Fanclub. Rather than celebrate at the aftershow, Thom Yorke reportedly retreated to his hotel room and worked on How To Disappear Completely . "Strobe lights and blown speakers. I'm not here. This isn't happening," he wrote, "I walk through walls. I float down the Liffey."

Tonight, Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood’s currently operational band, The Smile, are starting their 2024 world tour at the Point Theatre, named after the place where the River Liffey meets the sea. Interestingly, there doesn't appear to be a Radiohead t-shirt in sight. When Yorke, Greenwood and third Smile member Tom Skinner amble on a quarter of an hour after the designated stage time, they also have American saxophonist Robert Stillman in tow. They open with the aptly titled Read The Room, a math rock banger from their new second album, Wall Of Eyes, that soon pivots into a propulsive Neu!-like groove. Behind them, the  backdrop features a vast bank of flickering lights. Individual cameras are trained on each band member, who in turn are projected and enlarged onto four screens perched high above the stage - a simple trick Radiohead have effectively employed over the years. "Look at all the pretty lights," Yorke repeatedly sings early on A Hairdryer.

READ MORE: The Smile Wall Of Eyes Reviewed: "Until Radiohead return, or even if they never regroup, The Smile will do just nicely."

Yorke bids the crowd good evening after five songs, followed by a performance of Colours Fly, an unreleased track that has been doing the rounds live since 2022. Two exclusive world premieres, entitled Instant Psalm and Zero Sum respectively, underline the fact that this is far from a side project, but a new band who refuse to sit still. The latter features a bassline that sounds a bit like a distorted take on the playing style of Thom's former Atoms For Peace bandmate Flea, dysfunctional avant-garde funk imperative to the fore. It’s a minimal, tightly-knit squad, looser, leaner, and rawer than Radiohead, operating in what’s clearly their new comfort zone. The not-so secret weapon is Skinner, a jazz percussionist previously best known for his work with Sons Of Kemet, who lends these songs considerable fluidity and nuance.

the smile uk tour dates

It is, overall, an anti-rock masterclass in a stadium rock venue. Yorke and Greenwood alternate between bass, keyboards, piano, and guitars, but You Will Never Work In Television Again, from 2022’s debut A Light for Attracting Attention , is a more conventional straight-up rocker. Some of tonight's set would benefit from being cranked up a few more decibels and given a greater clarity from this cavernous hall's PA, but the eight-minute long climax of the main set, Bending Hectic, is an absolute knockout.

Yorke prefaces the first of four encores, We Don't Know What Tomorrow Brings, with a brief announcement. "We would like to humbly apologise on behalf of our nation for Brexit," Yorke says to delighted cheers. "The stupid c***s will be gone shortly." Teleharmonic, Pana-Vision, and You Know Me! close their Irish debut, before we march off into the dark and windy night to float down the Liffey.

the Smile’s Thom Yorke at Eventim Apollo, London.

The Smile review – Thom Yorke on jolly and utterly joyful form

Eventim Apollo, London Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and Tom Skinner’s pandemic-born band fly free from expectations, taking in everything from krautrock to Afrobeat

T he precise status of the Smile is intriguingly TBC. Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood began making music with Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner to stay busy during the pandemic and they have already released more music in two years than Radiohead have managed in 15. While Yorke’s solo albums were clearly a side hustle – opaque, electronic, on the run from tunes – and Greenwood’s film scores something else entirely, the Smile have enough substance to rival the day job. The restless Greenwood once said he wished that Radiohead albums were “90 per cent as good, but come out twice as often” and this is one way of getting his wish.

The Smile’s freewheeling versatility is doubly impressive live. Backlit by an LED screen which seems to manifest the title of new album Wall of Eyes , they take in galloping jazz-rock, neurotic Afrobeat, giallo terror-synths, slinky dub reggae, the hairier end of krautrock and, in the shape of the tremendous, strobe-lit Bending Hectic, a classic slow-burning rock anthem. The instrumentation, too, mutates from song to song. Half-hidden by his eternally youthful mop of hair, Greenwood wrenches an orchestra of options out of his guitar and hops from synthesiser to piano to harp on Speech Bubbles alone. Saxophonist Robert Stillman punches up the intensity, notably on majestic new song Instant Psalm.

While Yorke’s lyrics are the usual labyrinth of suspicions, phobias and vendettas, his between-song energy could almost qualify as jolly. He kicks off the Can-like Zero Sum with a growl of “here we fucking go” and whips the crowd into roaring the crony-bashing final refrain of Friend of a Friend. Perhaps the singer’s ease is down to the pleasure of flying free from expectations, playing new material without sensing fans itching for Paranoid Android.

For many years, every record Yorke was involved in felt like some kind of argument, repudiation or escape strategy. This band, however, follows every lead and says yes to every good idea. Their name is probably some barbed reference to surveillance capitalism or political doublespeak but tonight’s joyful adventure suggests a simpler reading. Smile!

Legendary 70s rock star announces first UK and Ireland tour dates in 35 years

59th GRAMMY Awards - MusiCares Person of the Year Honoring Tom Petty - Roaming Show

It’s been 35 years since Stevie Nicks last played a string of shows in the UK – but that’s about to change, with the rock legend announcing a run of concerts this summer.

The iconic American singer, 75, last performed consecutive UK shows as a solo artist in 1989, playing in London and Birmingham during the Europe-wide Other Side of the Mirror tour.

She’s played in the UK several times as part of her group Fleetwood Mac , but this is the first time in a generation that fans all over the country will see her perform hits such as Edge of Seventeen and Rooms on Fire as the front of her own band.

The UK and Ireland tour kicks off in Dublin on July 3, before going to Glasgow on July 6. Then two England dates: Manchester at the newly-opened Co-op Live Arena on July 9, before a huge show at Hyde Park BST on July 12.

Safe to say, UK and Ireland-based Stevie Nicks fans have lost it at the news, with many sharing their reactions on social media.

Fleetwood Mac

On X, user Guitarista said, ‘Stevie Nicks is playing Glasgow. I have goosebumps and I will cry,’ while user Eva commented: ‘Stevie Nicks is coming to Glasgow and no one will go with me!’

That upcoming night in Glasgow in July will be her first show in the UK of any kind since before the pandemic – she last performed as part of Fleetwood Mac at Wembley Stadium back in 2019.

For her last UK solo show, you’ll have to go back even further to 2017, when she supported Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers as part of the line-up for that year’s Hyde Park BST festival.

‘My birthday is on Thursday and all I want is to manage to get tickets to see Stevie Nicks in Glasgow when the tickets go on sale Friday,’ user Hailey posted onto X in response to the news.

However, some were left disappointed at there only being UK dates, with fans in places such as Cardiff, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Liverpool, and Birmingham left feeling disappointed.

And one unfortunate user, Jake Thomas Long from Manchester, found out that Stevie would be playing his city while he’s not there: ‘Not Stevie Nicks coming to Manchester when I’m on holiday!’

Christine McVie, the soulful British musician who sang lead on many of Fleetwood Mac???s biggest hits, has died at 79. The band announced her death on social media Wednesday, (Photo by Charles Sykes/Invision/AP, File)

As a singer and songwriter, Stevie rose to fame after joining Fleetwood Mac alongside fellow singer-songwriter Lindsey Buckingham in 1975, eventually leaving the band in 1990 before re-joining in 1997.

Stevie’s arrival in the band signalled a huge change of direction for them after initially being founded as a progressive rock band by Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood, Jeremy Spencer, and John McVie in 1967.

Tom Petty Stevie Nicks

After numerous line-up changes, Stevie and Lindsey joined before the release of the band’s 1975 self-titled album – their most successful up to that point.

Their albums Rumours, Tusk, Mirage, and Tango in the Night, released between 1977 and 1987, saw them become one of the biggest bands in the history of popular rock music, selling millions of albums and singles worldwide.

However, it’s unlikely that Stevie will ever tour with Fleetwood Mac again, after saying the band is ‘done’ following the death of long-time member Christine McVie , who died in November 2022 aged 79.

She said: ‘When Christine died, I felt like you can’t replace her. You just can’t. Without her, what is it? You know what I mean? She was like my soul mate, my musical soul mate, and my best friend that I spent more time with than any of my other best friends outside of Fleetwood Mac.’

How to buy Taylor Swift tickets: Eras Tour dates and prices compared

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

Taylor Swift's reign continues as she ramps up for the next leg of The Eras Tour. The singer-songwriter will kick off the European portion of her world tour in Paris in May, which will continue throughout the summer. From there, she'll return to North America to tour Canada and a few remaining US cities in the fall. If you're hoping to attend, we've compiled all of the details of The Eras Tour, including how to get Taylor Swift tour tickets.

Swift's Eras Tour has taken the world by storm since March 2023. The three-plus-hour tour features hits from each of Swift's album eras, from "Lover" to her recent Grammy Award-winning "Midnights." Each show also features surprise songs and occasional guests, so fans never quite know what they're in for. Swift will release her latest album, "The Tortured Poets Department," in April, but it's unknown if any of those songs will make their way to the tour setlist.

Getting tickets has become its own battle and many fans have waited hours in the Ticketmaster queue to hopefully snag some seats, if they could get a presale ticket code in the first place. While Swift continues to extend the tour, including new US dates, tickets remain hard to come by.

Below, we've put together a guide on everything to know about The Eras Tour, including the tour schedule, ticket purchasing details, resale ticket prices, and the concert film streaming options . You can also peruse resale vendors like StubHub and Vivid Seats at your leisure.

The Eras tour will return to the US on October 18 in Miami. In addition to the Miami shows, Swift will perform multiple dates in New Orleans and Indianapolis. On November 14, Swift will head to Canada for several shows in Toronto and Vancouver. All North American shows start at 7 p.m. local time.

Blade Runner Live ‘s full tour dates are below:

SEPTEMBER: 18 – SEC Armadillo, Glasgow 19 – O2 Apollo, Manchester 20 – Eventim Apollo, London 21 – Symphony Hall, Birmingham 23 – Brighton Centre, Brighton 24 – Bournemouth International Centre, Bournemouth

Blade Runner stars Harrison Ford as cop Rick Deckard, who is tasked with hunting down replicants – bioengineered humanoids that are indistinguishable from humans.

The film spawned a 2017 sequel called Blade Runner 2049 from director Denis Villeneuve, which saw Ford return as Deckard alongside new lead Ryan Gosling as Blade Runner K. An anime TV series called Blade Runner: Black Lotus also debuted in 2021.

Last year, new game Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth was unveiled by Annapurna Interactive , which will follow what it means to be a Blade Runner post-Blackout.

“I couldn’t pass up this chance. I’ve been watching the original film yearly since I was probably too young, and I remember sneaking away to watch 2049   in the midst of shipping a big project,” game director Chelsea Hash told IGN .
