Last updated on February 22nd, 2024.

When you think about visiting Colorado in the winter, it’s usually for one reason: to ski.

The US state’s renowned for its number of fabulous ski resorts, complete with snowy scenic backdrops.

But, aside from the skiing, there’s plenty to do in Colorado that doesn’t involve a set of skis or a snowboard. In this post I’ll be sharing the 16 best places to visit in Colorado in the winter.

Many towns resemble a scene straight out of a Hallmark Christmas movie, offering visitors a traditional and fantastical escape.

Colorado has plenty of pretty and charming towns to visit, which make ideal material for your USA bucket list .

A name synonymous with winter in Colorado and its skiing resorts, it’s little wonder why many visitors flock to Aspen.

The Aspen Snowmass resort is one of the most famed in town, featuring not one, but 4 ski mountains.

Non-skiers are catered for too, with activities like the Breathtaker Alpine Coaster and tubing on the schedule. These donut-shaped tubes are a whole lot of fun come summer on the water, or winter on the slopes.

Christmas is also well celebrated in Aspen, with a special event in town called the 12 days of Aspen.

Taking place during the last 12 days of December, Aspen transforms into a Christmassy festive wonderland.

Family-friendly activities like ice skating and cookie decorating are just a handful of the happening events. The 12-day celebration ends with a colorful fireworks display at Aspen Mountain on New Year’s Eve.

The event is just one reason that makes Aspen one of the best places to visit in Colorado in the winter.

Sitting at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado is the city of Boulder. Named one of the best places to spend Christmas in the USA, Boulder is magically transformed come winter.

Lights, lights, lights — places to visit in Colorado in the winter

The only other place that probably can rival Boulder’s Christmas lights is Vigo in Spain . A Christmas tradition that happens every year, the city places its iconic holiday star atop Flagstaff Mountain.

Consisting of 365 energy-saving LED lightbulbs, you can see the giant star from anywhere in Boulder.

The city has even more LED-light displays downtown, as well as in the Chautauqua district. Other notable winter highlights include a holiday hike, holiday tea services and a larger-than-life Christmas tree.

Each year, Hotel Boulderado puts up the two-story tree beneath its dazzling stained-glass mezzanine. The setting’s also where they serve a delicious afternoon tea with plenty of finger sandwiches and cream-filled cakes and pastries.

Plenty of snowing, sledding and other winter sports activities await at Crested Butte, one of the best places to visit in Colorado in the winter.

This idyllic small town in Colorado transforms into the prettiest winterfest, starting with a lighting of the town’s grand tree.

Just 45 minutes west of Denver is the municipality of Georgetown.

Steeped in history, Georgetown was the former silver mining camp along Clear Creek in the Rocky Mountains.

However, when winter, and the holiday season arrives, the town’s transformed into a scene from Christmas’ past. Horse-drawn wagon rides through the snow, sparkling Christmas lights and plenty of festive food and drink marks the winter season.

Georgetown — places to visit in Colorado in the winter

The annual Georgetown Christmas market is more than just a place where you can stock up on festive gifts. Carolers and dancers in Victorian costume entertain the crowds, leaving you to concentrate on eating, drinking and being merry.

The market also pays tribute to some of the European Christmas market traditions, such as the Santa Lucia children’s procession. Free to visit, it makes Georgetown one of the best places to visit in Colorado in the winter.

Charming and inviting is the best way to describe Hotel Chateaux Chamonix .

Located in the historic center of Georgetown, the hotel’s an easy 10-minute drive from the Loveland Ski Area. All bedrooms come with mountain views.

Glenwood Springs

In a city known for its hot springs, there’s no escaping a visit when in Glenwood Springs. Hotel Glenwood Springs has a year-round indoor pool and is located adjacent to Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park.

Mineral water from the nearby Yampah spring produces over 3.5 million gallons of water each day. And, at temperatures of 50°C (122°F), it makes this the hottest springs pool in Colorado.

However, fret not, as the resort doesn’t intend to cook its guests. The spring water’s cooled down before entering its 2 pools. Open throughout winter, it takes me back to my Blue Lagoon experience in Iceland .

The resort has 107 rooms and is 320m (0.32km) from the town center.

Made for wellness — what is there to in Colorado in the winter besides skiing?

Along with hosting a number of winter sports, Glenwood Springs is also known for its wellness facilities.

Follow in the footsteps of the Ute Indians by taking a time out in the Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves.

Mineral-rich steam enters the underground caverns, allowing you to soak up its healing properties. It’s an experience that’ll leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

The origins of the name of this small town in Colorado lies within its history.

What was once a gold rush town, is today a place of agriculture, industry and development. When winter arrives, the locals in Golden make the most out of the snowy weather.

Whether it’s hiking, biking or ice climbing in Clear Creek Canyon, people here like to be active. Golden Gate Canyon State Park tops the list for its spectacular hikes and views of the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area.

Coors beer in the snow — places to visit in Colorado in the winter

Exploring downtown Golden during the holidays, is akin to walking into a light extravaganza. The season also welcomes boutique shops, as well as an art market showcasing the work of Colorado artists.

One of the coolest places to visit in Colorado in the winter, the town’s also home to the famous Coors Brewery.

Less than 800m (0.8km) from the Coors distillery, the location of The Golden Hotel, Ascend Hotel Collection , is unbeatable. Spacious rooms, complete amenities and a restaurant on site, it’s an all-in-one accommodation package.

Stay in the heart of Golden at this chic and modern apartment in the downtown area . It can sleep 4 guests, and there’s 1 bedroom, plus a kitchen, deck and patio.

Leadville and Twin Lakes

Boasting the title of the highest incorporated city in North America is Leadville and Twin Lakes.

Surrounded by larger-than-life mountains and glorious scenery, it’s little wonder why Leadville is sometimes called the city in the clouds.

Taking after its location adjacent to the 2 largest glacial lakes is Twin Lakes. The reflections in the lakes of the largest peaks makes it a popular spot for photographers. Hiking, biking, canoeing and kayaking are just a handful of activities on offer.

Leadville winter biking — places to visit in Colorado in the winter

Come winter, Leadville has more than 100mi (161km) of multi-use winter trails. One of the best places to visit in Colorado in winter, visitors come for cross-country skiing as well as for snowmobiling and snowshoeing.

After a long day on the slopes, come home to this pet-friendly cozy house with hot tub . With uninterrupted mountain views and plenty of storage space, you’re guaranteed a comfortable stay.

Shake up your accommodation in Leadville at this rustic tiny house . It can comfortable sleep 3 people, and has facilities including a kitchenette, fridge and a flushing toilet.

Known as the ‘Switzerland of America’, you’re in for a serious winter vacation treat in Ouray. Named after Chief Ouray of the Ute Indians, the town was once a beacon for miners searching for gold.

Follow the blue glow — places to visit in Colorado in the winter

When winter arrives, so too does the heavy snow. The glow from the Ouray Ice Park adds a touch of brilliant blue to the town’s bright lights.

Its ice park is world famous, attracting visitors from the four corners to try out its ice climbing. And, while you might think it’s not for you, you’d be wrong. Ouray offers classes for beginners, so if you’re thinking of trying it out, you’re in the right place.

Ouray snowshoeing — places to visit in Colorado in the winter

Like Glenwood Springs, Ouray also has natural hot spring pools that remain open even throughout winter. Let the hot mineral water melt away any stress and tension, and give your muscles some much needed attention.

While here, you might be swayed into taking a snowshoe tour of several of its ghost towns. It’s your chance to learn more about their past, plus what it was like to live during the period.

Where to stay in Ouray

Beaumont Hotel and Spa is made for rest and relaxation. This adults-only hotel in downtown Ouray has a spa on site to help you relax after a long day’s exploring. Ouray Hot Springs is 800m (0.8km) from the hotel, and Ouray Ice Park is 1mi (1.6km) away.

Located a few blocks from downtown Ouray is this quaint and historic cabin . Pet-friendly, you’re close enough to the center, but can still enjoy the surrounding outdoor activities.

Ice climbing at Ouray — places to visit in Colorado in the winter

Steamboat Springs

Famed for its champagne powder snow, 6 towering peaks, snowmobile trail tours and 3,000 skiable acres is the very pretty Steamboat Springs.

The town’s also home to more Olympic skiers than other towns in North America. But, if your skiing skills are far from the likes of Lindsey Vonn, don’t worry. There are plenty more things in Steamboat Springs to keep you busy.

Saddleback Ranch offers a range of other non-skiing activities such as horseback riding, snowmobile tours and dinner sleigh rides.

snowmobile tours — places to visit in Colorado in the winter

The 280ft frozen waterfall at Fish Creek Falls attracts hikers, ice climbers and anyone that wants to see it.

I can’t write about Steamboat Springs without mentioning the Steamboat Ski Resort. It hosts a range of winter sports activities, most notably, night skiing. Your night time adventure will take you across 5 trails, which include See Me, Stampede and Lil’ Rodeo.

One of the best places to visit in Colorado in the winter, Steamboat Springs will not disappoint.

Where to stay in Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Less than 5 minutes by car to the slopes, the Inn at Steamboat offers large rooms and mountain views. Also, on site is a swimming pool and a well-equipped fitness center.

Enjoy your very own log cabin in a picturesque part of Steamboat Springs. With 2 bedrooms, 2 beds and 1 bath, it can comfortably sleep 5 guests.

While skiing may be the main reason why visitors come to Telluride, it’s not the only one.

The holiday season’s undeniably one of the prettiest in Colorado, with Christmas lights adorning every shop window downtown. It makes Telluride one of the prettiest places to visit in Colorado in the winter.

Seasonal events are aplenty in this former Victorian mining town. They include a North Pole area at Mountain Village, complete with Santa, train rides, refreshments and holiday-themed concerts.

My personal favorite is a horse-drawn sleigh ride against the backdrop of the snow-covered San Juan Mountains.

Telluride Ski Resort — places to visit in Colorado in the winter

More than skiing at Telluride — what part of Colorado is best in winter?

Put down the skis and pick up your skates. There are 2 ice-skating rinks in town, one at Telluride Town Park and the other at Hotel Madeline at Mountain Village.

Be sure to try out the free Telluride and Mountain Village gondola. The views are spectacular and far reaching and marks Telluride as one of the top places to visit in Colorado in the winter. On a clear day, it’s possible to see as far as the La Sal mountain range in Utah.

Where to stay in Telluride

Add a touch of luxury to your stay in Telluride at the Madeline Hotel and Residences, Auberge Resorts Collection . Overlooking the San Juan Mountains, the rooms, services and food in Mountain Village live up to its 4-star title.

Go for a boutique, and more affordable option, with this stylish 1-bedroom lodge . Good for 2 guests, it provides comfortable accommodation in what’s arguably one of the most expensive ski towns.

Telluride downtown — places to visit in Colorado in the winter

Set at the base of the Vail Mountain is the small town of the same namesake.

Also taking after its name is the town’s famous, and huge, Vail Ski Resort. Villages with accommodation ranging from mid-range to luxury allow you to stay closer to the action.

Skiers are spoiled at Vail with 5,317 acres of skiable terrain right on their doorstep. Different areas of the resort offer unforgettable views and the chance to ski all of Vail’s seven back bowls. These are the snow-filled alpine basins, stretching 6mi (9.7km) from east to west.

Vail Colorado — places to visit in Colorado in the winter

When it’s time to dine, there’s one option that beats the rest: on-mountain dining. Vail Ski Resort has 3 places to dine on the mountains, offering American cuisine and wine with a view.

Non-skiers are not forgotten at Vail. Jump on board the mountain coaster, which takes you down 3,400ft surrounded by Vail’s scenic mountains.

As in Telluride, Vail’s gondolas are a great way to see the sights and are family friendly too. Unlike in Telluride, however, the gondola rides aren’t free.

How to get to Vail?

There are a few options on how to reach Vail.

Denver International Airport is 100mi (161km) away, while Eagle/Vail Airport is just 30mi (48km) from Vail. Another option, and one that’s also affordable, is the Epic Mountain Express/Colorado Mountain Express shuttle service.

It will take you directly from Denver International Airport to towns including Aspen, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Vail.

Right in the center of Vail is the sublime The Lion Vail . With huge rooms and suites with luxury touches, it’ll be hard to leave come checkout. The Nordic Center is 2.2mi (3.5km) from the property, while Adventure Ridge is 4.3mi (7km) away.

Snuggle up beneath the covers at this gorgeous modern 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom condo . Inside, is a wood burning fireplace, fully equipped kitchen and plenty of storage space.

The complex is home to Vail’s largest indoor heated swimming pool. A free shuttle bus will take you to the slopes in winter. Throughout the year, a free town of Vail bus stop is located behind building 2 to provide even more convenience.

Tip: Be sure to also stop by the nearby towns of Granby and Grand Lake (if you’re heading to Grand Lake be sure to check out my guide: The Best Things To Do In Grand Lake ).

Getting Here & Where To Stay In Winter Park

The nearest major airport is Denver International Airport at 92 miles away.

The town has a handful of hotels and rentals available.

Glenwood Springs , Colorado

If you’re looking for a place to relax this winter in Colorado, Glenwood Springs is the spot for you.

While it does offer many fun activities like snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and mountain coasters, its main draw are the hot springs.

The most popular springs here are Glenwood Hot Springs Resort and Iron Mountain Hot Springs.

The two are especially dreamy when they turn into a snowy winter wonderland.

Glenwood is a great place to relax and unwind during the winter months.

Aspen/ Pitkin County Airport is the nearest airport, 38 miles away. The closest major airport is 182 miles away, Denver International.

Glenwood Springs is one of the larger mountain towns and offers a variety of historic hotels.

My favorite is Hotel Colorado , which is walking distance to some of the best hot springs.

Rocky Mountain National Park

A visit to this park during the off-season offers a unique opportunity to experience the quieter side to this often very crowded national park.

Enjoy a peaceful day in Rocky Mountain National Park snowshoeing, ice skating, cross-country skiing, or sledding.

Keep an eye out for deer and elk, who spend their winter in the park’s lower elevations.

For lots more information, check out Things To Do In Rocky Mountain National Park During Winter .

The closest airport is Denver International Airport, which is 77 miles to Estes Park.

Estes Park is less than 5 miles from the park entrance and has tons of small hotels and inns worth staying in.

For more ideas, check out The Best Estes Park Cabins On The River .

Colorado Springs , Colorado

Colorado Springs is the second largest city in the state and is surrounded by breathtaking beauty.

The city’s most notable resident is Pikes Peak, a 14,000 foot behemoth staring down at the city.

And yes, you can visit the top, via Pikes Peak Cog Railway, even in winter.

Spend your winter in Colorado Springs exploring Garden of the Gods, having a cocktail at the immaculately decorated Broadmoor Hotel, or take a day trip to the Royal Gorge Bridge.

Looking for something a little quieter? Check out neighboring Manitou Springs.

For more ideas, head on over to The Best Things To Do In Colorado Springs During Winter .

Where To Stay In Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs has an airport serviced by most major airlines, just 12 miles from downtown. Otherwise, Denver International Airport is 84 miles away.

Colorado Springs has some really beautiful resorts.

My favorites are The Broadmoor , Cheyenne Mountain Resort , and Garden of the Gods Resort & Club .

Telluride , Colorado

Telluride is one of the most remote ski towns in the state, but it’s worth the extra effort to get here.

In addition to the town’s top notch ski resort, which offer short lines and an excellent variety of runs, the town of Telluride itself is one of the biggest draws.

This charming settlement has a way of making you feel like a local even after just one day.

Shop, dine, and drink at one of the town’s many small businesses this winter season.

To access Telluride you have three airports to choose from: Telluride Regional Airport (6 miles away), Montrose Airport (70 miles away), or Denver International Airport (354 miles away).

Stay in the town of Telluride or Mountain Village, both are connected by a free gondola, making it easy to navigate between the two.

My favorite place to stay in Telluride is the Madeline Hotel & Residences in Mountain Village or Hotel Telluride in town.

Durango , Colorado

Southwest Colorado gets some incredible snow, making it a wonderful place to ski and snowboard.

When you’re not on the slopes, consider snowmobiling, visiting Mesa Verde National Park, or taking a scenic train ride through the San Juans via the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.

Wrap up your day soaking in the mineral waters of Durango Hot Springs.

You will not regret a winter vacation to this quiet corner of the Rocky Mountains.

The Durango – La Plata County Airport is serviced by many major airlines, and is just 15 miles from downtown.

Otherwise, Albuquerque International Sunport and Denver International Airport are the closest international airports at 218 and 361 miles away, respectively.

Durango is one of the state’s larger mountain towns so you’ll find plenty of accommodation options here.

Check out the Historic Strater Hotel , or for a spot right on the Animas River, DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel .

Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National Park

Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National Park surrounds a deep, nearly-vertical gorge that’s been carved out over the past 2 million years by the Gunnison River.

This gorge is so deep and steep that portions of the canyon floor see less than an hour of sunlight per day, a fact which attributed to the canyon’s name.

The rocky, vertigo-inducing cliffs make for stunning views, especially when covered in snow during the winter months.

Winter visitors will be able to snowshoe the canyon rim or take in the viewpoints.

Montrose Regional Airport is closest to the park, just 15 miles away, and Denver International Airport is 274 miles away.

Montrose is the nearest town to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and offers a variety of lodging options, but mostly chain hotels.

Check out Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites or Hampton Inn Montrose .

Otherwise, The Lodge at Needle Rock in Crawford on the park’s northern edge.

Huge rock cliff, taller than almost any sky scraper in the world, cliff face is almost vertical, brown, with white stripes, below the canyon walls is a narrow river. Painted Wall, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, South Rim, near Montrose, Colorado.

Steamboat Springs , Colorado

Steamboat Springs is located in northwestern Colorado and is known for fantastic downhill skiing, snowmobiling, stunning natural hot springs, and lots of western wear.

Spend your day trying out winter sports followed by après, shopping, and relaxing in Strawberry Hot Springs.

No matter the time of year you plan to visit, be sure to check out this Strawberry Hot Springs Guide for everything to know before your visit.

Getting Here & Where To Stay In Steamboat Springs During Winter

For flights check out Yampa Valley Regional Airport, 24 miles away, or DIA, which is 181 miles away.

Steamboat Springs is a large mountain town offering a wide variety of accommodation options.

Check out mountainside mansion rentals or Steamboat Grand Hotel .

Beaver Creek

Beaver Creek is Vail’s neighboring town with equally impressive skiing and snowboarding opportunities.

Hit the slopes, spend the day at a luxury spa, stroll the charming village, or have a gourmet meal amid breathtaking mountain views.

You’re sure to love a winter visit to Beaver Creek in Colorado.

Eagle County Regional Airport is the closest airport at 27 miles away, and DIA is 129 miles away.

Beaver Creek is small but offers an impressive selection of luxury resorts.

Some of my favorite options for a winter visit are Park Hyatt Beaver Creek and The Pines Lodge .

Boulder, Colorado

Boulder is a favorite Colorado destination, no matter the time of year.

The gorgeous town sits at the base of the picture-perfect Flatirons and Rocky Mountains.

Boulder isn’t a ski destination, although it still offers tons of great outdoor recreation.

Go snowshoeing in Chautauqua Park or bike the Boulder Creek Path. Then wrap up your day browsing shops on Pearl Street Mall and dining out at delicious restaurant.

For more ideas, check out Boulder In Winter: Top Things To Do .

Boulder is only 27 miles from downtown Denver and 39 miles from DIA. You can get to Boulder via bus from either destination.

This beautiful town has some excellent hotels to choose from, among my favorites are the St. Julien and Hotel Boulderado .

Snow-capped mountain view with snowy pine trees in foreground on gorgeous sunny day. Lost Gulch Overlook, Flagstaff Mountain, Boulder, Colorado.

As you can see, Colorado has so many magical places worth visiting in winter. How many have you visited?

Your Ultimate Guide To Winter Attractions And Activities In Colorado

Tori Jane is a storm chaser, writer, photographer, and the village idiot - in that order. When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.

Vail Ski Resort

The ski resort town of Vail is one of the best places to visit in Colorado in winter but it's also a pleasant place to enjoy at any time of year. When it comes to skiing, this is one of the top ski resorts in Colorado , with seemingly endless runs for all levels of skiers.

The town at the base of the ski hill is postcard cute, with chalet-style restaurants, shops, and hotels that make you feel like you are in the heart of the Alps. This is a high-end resort with luxury hotels, fine dining, and designer stores.

Vail doesn't always fit with everyone's budget, particularly if you want to spend a night during the high season. In the vicinity are a number of small towns and villages that are less well known but more affordable and also worth a visit.

Although not a ski resort, Frisco is a charming mountain town and one of the best places to visit in the area. This is a nice base if you are exploring the I-70 Corridor around Vail and Beaver Creek. The town has all kinds of quirky cafés, shops, and restaurants, and a true mountain vibe.

Just up the way from here is the town of Breckenridge at an altitude of 9,600 feet. This town has a very casual and fun downtown and is perfect if you plan on skiing at Breckenridge Ski Resort or looking for a little nightlife.

West of Vail are the towns of Avon and, a little beyond Avon, Beaver Creek . Avon can be a good place to find accommodation, particularly if you are looking for more affordable options than those at the base of the ski hills. Beaver Creek is a ski resort with another adorable village at the base. It has a full range of restaurants, from casual to fine dining, a skating rink in the main square in winter, and hotels.

Mesa Verde National Park

Regardless of whether or not you have seen cliff dwellings before, you will be blown away by Mesa Verde and the amount of access to the actual ruins that the park allows visitors.

The park's centerpiece, Cliff Palace is one of the most impressive dwellings in the entire Southwest, with a dramatic setting and incredibly preserved ruins. Ranger-led tours, which run regularly during the summer high season, allow you to climb ladders right up into the heart of the dwelling. It is highly recommended that you pre-book your Cliff Palace visitor tickets in advance of your visit. Spaces are limited and demand is high, especially in the summer. Tickets can be booked 14 days in advance of your planned arrival date.

If you aren't up for that level of activity, you can get a full view of the site from a nearby overlook.

Mesa Verde was home to the Ancestral Pueblo who inhabited the dwellings from approximately 600 AD to 1300 AD. Thousands of archeological sites lie within the park, although the cliff dwellings are the most spectacular. A road allows access to numerous sites, many of which are on top of the mesa. A number of hiking trails, which do not require a ranger tour, lead to lookouts and interesting sites, including petroglyphs.

Located near the towns of Cortez and Mancos , Mesa Verde is reached by a long road that leads high up above the surrounding landscape. The drive from the highway up to the site takes about 45 minutes.

Near the highway is one of the visitor centers , where you can get information on the park and road conditions before driving up. You can book a ranger-led tour of Cliff Palace when you arrive so you know what time to show up for the one-hour tour.

Pikes Peak in Pike National Forest

At 14,115 feet in elevation, Pikes Peak, in Pike National Forest, is one of the Southwest's famous "fourteeners," a reference to mountains that stand over 14,000 feet. The snow-capped peak is easily recognizable from the nearby town of Colorado Springs.

This is one of the most visited mountains in the world , second only to Mt. Fuji. Unlike many mountain peaks that are inaccessible to the average person, you can drive to the summit of Pikes Peak on the Pikes Peak Highway, off highway 24, west of Colorado Springs. Travel time is about 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take the Pikes Peak Cog Railway for a scenic 8.9-mile trip, with a round-trip time of just over three hours.

At the top is the brand new Pike's Peak Summit Visitor's Center. Started in 2018 and now almost complete, this stunning glass and wood structure provides amazing views, interactive displays, along with a variety of dining options. Those folks who specifically make the trek up to the top of Pike's Peak for the world famous donuts will not be disappointed. These tasty, fluffy treats are still available.

In addition to simply appreciating the views from the top, the area offers a range of recreational opportunities. In the vicinity are numerous hiking trails, as well as mountain biking areas and opportunities for fishing in reservoirs.

Garden of the Gods

Also near Colorado Springs is Garden of the Gods. This registered National Natural Landmark is home to a unique landscape of jagged stone towers and fins jutting up 300 feet from the earth. Surrounding the fins, giant balanced boulders and rock piles dot the landscape and distant mountains, completing the scene.

Fifteen miles of walking trails , most of which are short and easy, allow you to get up close to the dramatic rock formations and wander through the surreal scenery.

The park is a popular area for rock climbing , but other activities in the park include road biking in designated biking lanes, mountain biking , and horseback riding . Jeep tours are also very popular.

The Garden of the Gods Park Visitor & Nature Center functions as a museum with exhibits and a 20-minute video on the geology of the park. They also offer daily guided nature walks . Views from the visitor center are incredible, and the on-site café, with huge windows, is a great venue for enjoying a snack or beverage.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gage Railway

In southern Colorado, the town of Durango has a lovely setting at the base of surrounding mountains. The historic downtown area has some well-restored, grand old buildings that function as hotels and restaurants. Some are done in southwestern décor, with an Old West feel.

In the summer, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gage Railway is one of the town's main tourist attractions. This historic train runs day trips up the valley from Durango to the old mining town of Silverton, high in the mountains. In the winter, the train still runs but only on specific dates and only to Cascade Canyon. It's a much different experience than the summer trip, but well worth checking out.

Durango is also the terminus of the Colorado Trail , a 500-mile-long backcountry trail that runs from Denver to Durango. You can do a day hike or mountain bike along the trail, going out and back the same way. The trail follows the scenic Junction Creek and then climbs up to Gudy's Rest, where many people enjoy lunch and then turn around.

More hiking and mountain biking trails can be found right in the town of Durango and in the surrounding mountains.

In winter, Durango is a full-on ski town, supported by the nearby Purgatory Ski Resort , just 15 minutes outside of town. This is a family resort that attracts both locals and skiers from around the Southwest. Some skiers also base themselves in Durango, which has reasonably-priced hotels, and ski at Telluride , two hours away.

San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway and the Million Dollar Highway

A spectacular scenic drive stretches from the old mining town of Silverton, to the town of Ouray, along what is called the Million Dollar Highway . This is a 46-kilometer two-lane highway that hugs the mountainside in places and looks out over jaw-dropping cliffs and across valleys to inspiring mountain peaks. It is one of the most spectacular mountain drives in Colorado.

If you have time, you can extend this into a longer route and drive the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway . The Skyway is a full-day trip that you will want to do in good weather, but can be done in winter or summer.

Beginning in Durango, the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway is a complete loop that will take you up to Silverton, along the Million Dollar Highway to Ouray, over to Placerville, south to Telluride, Dolores, Mancos, and back to Durango .

If you have less time or are only planning on heading in one direction, you can do the Silverton to Ouray section beginning from Durango, up to Silverton, over the Million Dollar Highway to Ouray, and beyond to Montrose or further north to Grand Junction. Some of the highlights along the way are the towns of Silverton, Ouray, and Telluride.

Set at more than 9,300 feet and surrounded by mountains, Silverton has one main street with a few shops and restaurants. In summer, it can be ridiculously busy, but in winter, most of the establishments are closed, and the place can feel like a ghost town. On the edge of town, Silverton Mountain is an old school ski "resort" with great backcountry downhill skiing for advanced skiers.

Ouray , with a sign at the main lookout calling it the "Switzerland of America," is another mountain town, known for its hot springs.

If you choose to do the Skyway, you can stop in at Telluride . Known for the Telluride Ski Resort, this is one of the most beautiful mountain towns in America, with a traditional main street and gorgeous mountain scenery. You can take a free gondola up the mountain for a better look over the area.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

Black Canyon of the Gunnison is a fabulous, rugged looking canyon, and it's remote enough that it has the feeling of being undiscovered. Steep cliff walls rise up from the Gunnison River, creating a narrow and dramatic canyon. The depth of the canyon is around 2,000 feet, with Gunnison Point and Chasm View at just over 1,800 feet and Warner Point at 2,722 feet.

The main things to do here are to simply gaze out over the canyon and appreciate the environment or wander along the walking paths and short hiking trails on the rim. These are generally flat and easy trails. If you're adventurous, you can hike into the canyon, but trails are not maintained or marked, conditions are difficult, and you are basically on your own and responsible for the costs of rescue, should the need arise.

Three campgrounds are located in the park; the North and South Rim campgrounds are open to tents and RVs but the East Portal is only open to tents.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is about 75 miles southeast of Grand Junction. If you are based in Grand Junction or Fruita, you can easily visit both the canyon and Colorado National Monument on a day trip.

Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness

Near the town of Aspen, Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness showcases some of Colorado's most spectacular Rocky Mountain scenery and offers a chance to get out of your car and into nature. This area has six mountains over 14,000 feet , along with forests, alpine lakes, meadows, and 175 miles of trails to help you explore the terrain.

The recreational activities are what draw most people to Maroon Bells. The hiking here is incredible, with all kinds of day hikes and backpacking areas. Mountain biking trails cover hundreds of miles. Fishing in lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams is popular in summer. If you've got a tent and the gear, camping in Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness is an experience not to be missed. In winter, people come here to ski, snowshoe, and snowmobile , making it a year-round outdoor playground.

If you aren't up for that much activity, you can also enjoy the views along some of the scenic drives .

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

Home to the tallest sand dunes in North America , Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is an interesting sight in Colorado with a landscape that most visitors are not expecting to find. The 750-foot Star Dune is startlingly high, particularly when you are considering climbing it, and the mountains in the distance create a stunning setting.

You can climb and slide on the dunes or test your boarding skills cruising down the sand. On hot days, children and even adults enjoy splashing around in the Medano Creek that runs along the base of the dunes. Hiking trails run through the forest on the edge of the dunes.

The four-wheel drive Medano Pass Primitive Road opens up some unique terrain, and car camping sites are located along the roadside. Regular camping is available at the Pinon Flats campground, which offers both tent and RV campsites.

Aspen

Although it's most commonly associated with skiing, Aspen is a year-round destination that can be enjoyed by skiers or non-skiers. Restaurants and stores line the streets, many of which look up to the ski runs on the edge of town.

Aspen also makes for a nice getaway from Denver, just over three hours away. The town has no shortage of luxury hotels and resorts, plus dining options are plentiful. If you don't want to stay here, you can day trip from nearby Glenwood Springs, another popular destination in the area.

Colorado National Monument

Just outside the towns of Grand Junction and nearby Fruita is Colorado National Monument. A scenic road snakes its way through some outstanding scenery. This is not typical mountain scenery, but a landscape of huge rock spires, cliff walls, canyons, and desert-like surroundings with small trees and scrubby bushes.

Most people drive through the monument along Rim Rock Drive and stop at the lookouts that peer over the landscape below. The road is also a popular road biking area , with hearty souls peddling their way up to the lookouts.

A number of day hikes access some scenic areas of the monument, most of which involve moderate elevation changes that range from approximately 300 feet to more than 1,000 feet.

Official site: http://www.nps.gov/colm/index.htm

Dinosaur National Monument

Dinosaur National Monument, in northwest Colorado, combines dramatic scenery with natural and cultural history to create one of Colorado's most interesting sites. While most people are drawn here for the archeological aspects, the recreational opportunities add another aspect to your visit.

Dinosaur remains embedded in exposed rock walls reveal evidence of the giants that once roamed these areas, and petroglyphs offer insight into the cultures and people that lived here long ago. Surrounding it all are cliff walls and the Green and Yampa Rivers snaking through the otherwise dry landscape.

Your first stop should be the Quarry Visitors Center from where you can access the main attraction at the park, the Quarry Exhibit Hall , built over the Carnegie Dinosaur Quarry. A huge wall of windows allows in natural light, making it feel more like an excavation site than a museum. Fossils are in various states, from still encased in the stone wall to fully assembled skeletons.

Other popular things to do in Dinosaur National Monument range from a simple driving tour through the monument to hiking, fishing, rafting, and camping. A number of scenic drives run through the park on both paved and four-wheel drive roads. Hiking trails range from short nature walks of less than a half mile to eight-mile-long day hikes.

It's easy to spend a few days in this area if you are interested in exploring the park. Campgrounds , some of which are open to both tents and RVs and others open only to tents, are spread around the park. Hotels can be found at nearby Vernal.

Glenwood Springs

With hot springs, a fantastic adventure park, beautiful hiking trails, rafting, fishing, and sking, Glenwood Springs is one of the best places to visit in Colorado for families. That said, anyone will enjoy a visit here, whether it's couples looking for a romantic getaway or nature lovers looking for an outdoor escape.

The town is home to two major hot springs, including the largest mineral host springs pool in the world . On the edge of town is the family-focused Sunlight Mountain Ski Resort , and Aspen Snowmass Ski Resort is less than an hour away. In summer, the Hanging Lake hiking trail is incredibly popular.

For water-based activities, the Roaring Fork and Colorado Rivers provide ample opportunities for whitewater rafting , as well as fly fishing.

If you're looking for something a little less outdoorsy, you can find dining, attractions, and things to do in Glenwood Springs to suit all tastes.

Mount Evans

Another of Colorado's fourteeners, Mount Evans reaches an elevation of 14,271, feet and the Mount Evans Scenic Byway extends almost to the summit. This is the highest paved road in the United States , reaching over 14,130 feet.

The views from the top and on the way up, above the tree line, are outstanding, with meadows, lakes, and rolling mountains extending out into the distance. The area is so open and exposed that you have a good chance of seeing wildlife, particularly bighorn sheep.

From Denver, you can reach the summit of Mount Evans, about 60 miles away, in less than two hours. Keep in mind, this is a seasonal highway that is closed in the winter .

Joe's Ridge Trail at 18 Road Trails

For mountain bikers, Colorado is a haven, with great trails all over the state. Unfortunately, the mountain climate limits the season in many areas. But the town of Fruita, near Grand Junction, has the climate to enable you to stretch out your mountain biking season through the shoulder seasons and into the winter months. It's also a quirky little town with enough character to make you want to stay a while and return.

The mountain biking trails around Fruita are some of the best trails in the state. Most notably are the 18 Road Trails , with the infamous Zippity Do Da trail, and the Kokopelli Loops . This is desert terrain, with trails that run along the tops of ridges and everywhere in between or alongside cliff ledges with views over the Colorado River.

This area has, for many mountain bikers, become an alternative to Moab, Utah . During the spring, you can even combine sports: mountain biking in Fruita one day and skiing at Beaver Creek or Vail - just over two hours away - the next.

12 Terrific Tourist Attractions in Colorado

February 26, 2024 By //  by  Matt Thomas

Colorado is one of the most popular states for tourists and for great reason. It showcases some of the best attractions for visitors to discover year-round in this Rocky Mountain destination.

Whatever kind of traveler you are, there’s something for you to see and do here. From touring a factory to climbing a sand dune, we’ve scoured up the most popular tourist attractions for your itinerary. These are the on-the-beaten-track activities, so expect the crowds and go on a weekday when you can. All of these can be enjoyed year-round.

Here’s a look at the best tourist attractions in Colorado, in no particular order:

Royal Gorge

Royal Gorge Bridge & Park, Colorado

This giant canyon is accessed an hour’s drive southwest of Colorado Springs in Cañon City and features a whole slew of activities built around it. The highlight isn’t just the gorge itself, towering 955 feet over the Arkansas River carving through it, but the suspension bridge over it. The Royal Gorge Bridge & Park allows visitors to cross to the other side and play a bunch of cliffside games.

Commercial whitewater rafting trips depart daily during the peak summer season directly through the Royal Gorge. You can also travel along the bottom of it via the Royal Gorge Route Railroad. Or fly high over at the Royal Gorge Zipline. There are so many ways to experience this unique region of Colorado.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

This is Colorado’s most visited national park, and among the most visited in the National Park Service, with around 4.5 million guests. Referred to as RMNP for short, Rocky Mountain National Park spans both sides of the continental divide from Estes Park to Grand Lake . You can drive the whole route either way via Trail Ridge Road, though not over the winter when this high-elevation road closes.

Another scenic option between towns is Old Fall River Road, a one-way option from Estes Park over the divide. In addition to these auto tours, there are countless hikes and outdoor experiences, from waterfalls and wildlife to camping under a million stars. Stop by the visitor center and read the interpretive signs explaining highlights along the way to get the best knowledge about the area.

Garden of Gods

Garden of Gods, Colorado

Just as the towering skyscrapers attract people to Denver, people come to Colorado Springs for its natural attractions. There are many cool things to choose from for the tourist options in the Olympic City and one of the best is also free. The Garden of the Gods is open to a variety of visitors, more than four million annually.

Driving through, or parking and going for a hike, rock climbing, or visiting the museum are some of the main activities.

This national natural landmark is probably among the most amazing complimentary places to take a stroll in the entire world. Definitely hit this bucket list attraction  when you are touring the sights of Pikes Peak Country. At a minimum, take the auto tour through the park, stop at an overlook or two, and admire the giant red sandstones jutting out of the ground.

While in the area, if you haven’t done so before, drive up Pikes Peak (pictured above looming over the Garden of the Gods). You’ll pay to do so, but it will be worth your while.  Where else are you going to get up over 14,000 feet in elevation? Mt. Evans Byway is another. There are hiking options too. But Pikes Peak is the most famous and has a fancy new visitor center at the top.

There’s also a Cog Railway up to the top from Manitou Springs. Both the Pikes Peak Highway, which begins in Cascade, and the Pikes Peak Cog Railway departing a little prior to that welcome tourists year-round, weather pending. There are a few parks along the way to get out an enjoy the high country ambiance at one of its alpine lakes.

Great Sand Dunes

Great Sand Dunes, Colorado

It’s just sand, but it’s stacked really high, and in the Rocky Mountains, far from any beaches and ocean sides. Located a short drive from Alamosa in the wonderfully unusual San Luis Valley, this national park and preserve have really but one main attraction, its giant piles of sand blown in from the far reaches.

The Great Sand Dunes were created when sand was brought in via rivers and creeks, along with other sediments into the San Luis Valley. It was blown around by the wind and pushed up against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, where opposing wind currents helped form them into high dunes at a particular bend in the range.

You can walk out there any time, some say it’s better after dark when you can see the sky. More vigours travelers will hike to the top of Star Dune, the largest in the park, and maybe try to sand surf on the way down. There’s also a campground on-site, some off-roading, hiking, and a seasonal Medano Creek, pictured above, good for splashing around. Zapata Falls is just down the road.

Downtown Denver

People crossing the street in Downtown Denver 16th Street Mall

Have you checked out Downtown Denver yet? That’s usually a question of new tourists when trying to offer them suggestions on the big things to see. Once you get down there, it’s an easy area to walk around the capital city, with the 16th Street Mall at the heart of it all.

This pedestrian-friendly, mile-long promenade connects Union Station , where more trains and buses go fun places, to nearby the State Capitol Building . You can tour either of these historic buildings, with formal tours offered of the latter. Best of all, when you get tired of walking, there’s a free bus ride running along the promenade making stops at each of the city blocks.

There are also several parks and the lovely Cherry Creek Trail , which stems from Confluence Park. On the opposite end of 16th Street is Civic Center Park nearby the Capitol. Depending on the season, in the middle of downtown, Skyline Park hosts different attractions, such as a beer garden and a winter ice skating rink.

Red Rocks, Colorado

The proper way to experience this iconic outdoor music venue is by seeing a show there. However, that’s not always possible, so luckily, when not in use you can stop by all year long and treat it as a free park. The Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre is a fun place to gaze back onto the Great Plains and the metropolitan skyline below.

Located in Morrison in the foothills, it’s a convenient place to take in the view and move around a bit. Locals use it as a space to get some exercise. Some walk and run the rows (shown above), or just give back closer to the top or stage and enjoy the vibes. Stop by the Colorado Music Hall of Fame located under the Main Stage.

Coors Brewery

Coors Brewery, Colorado

The Coors Brewery brings in all kinds of beer lovers from across the globe. It’s located in the Old West town of Golden at the base of the front range mountains. The town itself is a major destination for people to stroll along its downtown, shopping, dining, and sightseeing. However, going on a Coors Brewery tour is on the vacation itinerary for many sudsy people.

Free tours are given daily throughout the year and come with free beer at the end. You’ll see how the beer is made at one of the country’s leading beer producers and then sample some of their signatures, and hopefully, limited-edition brews. Go on a weekday and preferably earlier in the day for a faster experience…or maybe at last call.

Mesa Verde, Colorado

Tucked away in the southwest region of the state, Mesa Verde is a mesmerizing place to visit. It’s centered around the Ancient Puebloan ruins, old homesteads found both built on top of the mesas and into the cliffsides. They were occupied and built in the centuries prior to their abandonment around 1300.

There’s a campground and overnight accommodations within the park at the Far View Lodge. The town of Cortez is less than fifteen minutes away from the park entrance. Be sure to take the full auto tour to see the amazing sights, stopping at all the unique overlooks. Be sure to book at least one guided or two to the cliff dwellings to get the best interactive experience.

Hanging Lake

Hanging Lake, Colorado

Ten miles east of Glenwood Springs , secluded by a long hike is the amazing Hanging Lake. Due to its massive popularity, permits and reservations are required to make the trek up to the lake and waterfalls.

You can access Hanging Lake year-round after you book your spot . Naturally, summer is the peak, but a winter hike or snowshoe, depending on how packed down the snow already is, brings its own magic. It’s a designated national natural landmark because of its splendid hanging garden plant community.

Breckenridge Historic District

Even people that don’t ski and snowboard visit and love the town of Breckenridge . It’s only 1.5 hours from Denver and nestled within the equally stunning Summit County, so there’s easy access to other cool towns and attractions. Aside from its four impressive ski resorts, Summit County offers much more for a multi-night trip or just a day visit from Denver.

Breckenridge has block after block of quaint shops and so many restaurants aimed at the masses of tourists in its pedestrian-friendly downtown. Most of the businesses are housed in historic buildings with plenty of museums and relics to check out. The ski resort is among the busiest in the state, which melts to mountain biking and an adventure park for all ages in the summer.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, CO

The gem of the Southwest, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad brings people from all over the world to check out its alpine train rides. The train depot is housed in the colorful and vibrant mountain town of Durango, with another in the secluded higher-elevation town of Silverton. Everything about the experience feels historic.

There are a variety of train rides offered throughout the year, including some Christmas and other holiday-themed trips. You can take the train round-trip, or one-way from Durango to Silverton , or vice-versa. There’s also an option of taking a bus back along the mesmerizing Highway 550 instead for a quicker tour and different scenery.

While these places are all likely to be bustling with sightseers, you’ll be glad you visited. They are among the best tourist attractions in Colorado.

Dude ranches often are associated with summer vacations. We picture city slickers slipping away to enjoy the great outdoors and fresh mountain air, learning the rhythms of a horse’s gait and some new tunes around a campfire. But visiting a ranch in winter? Oh, what fun!

Come the colder months, Colorado’s dude ranches offer all kinds of activities, including gliding across the snow on cross-country skis and galloping through the powder on horseback. There’s also dog sledding, sleigh rides, tubing and more, says Courtney Frazier, executive director of the Colorado Dude & Guest Ranch Association.

“You’ll love the evening campfires and cozy cabins,” Frazier says. “Some of our ranches also have full spas to relax in after a busy day of exploring the Rocky Mountains.”

Saddle up: Here are five dude ranches that are perfect for winter escapes with amenities that include a private ski mountain, a top-notch culinary program and a murder mystery weekend.

C Lazy U Ranch

The C Lazy U near Granby couldn’t have a more idyllic setting. Days on the 8,500-acre ranch start with “Cowboy Coffee” traditions around an outdoor firepit with the nip of the alpine air and end with toasting s’mores. In between, there are horse and sleigh rides through the winter wonderland. Plus, a Zamboni is used to groom a pond on the property so you can skate in the open air or join a pickup hockey game.

Guests can also go fly-fishing in Willow Creek, a tributary of the Colorado River. Some sections build up ice shelves, but the creek is still flowing and the fish are still biting.

Three daily gourmet meals are a part of the all-inclusive rate (expect to pay $587 per person/night or more) and the winter dining menu includes carmel apple venison, pheasant cordon bleu, duck confit perogies and rose glazed pink prawns.

Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort & Spa

Go dashing through the snow — on a sleigh, cross-country skis, or with a pair of snowshoes strapped to your feet. Devil’s Thumb Ranch near Granby is a rustic-luxe winter playground with some unique offerings, including cozy rides in a heated snow cat that traverses the snow-covered Ranch Creek Valley.

The resort also has fat tire bikes that can plow through powder, and Winter Park Ski Resort is just 10 miles from the ranch if doing laps on the slopes is on your mind. After playing in the snow, book a spa treatment and slink into a copper soaking tub or enjoy a heated river stone massage. Rates vary widely, depending on lodging, meal and activities booked. Expect to pay at least $460 a night for lodging for two people.

Vista Verde Guest Ranch

Old West meets luxury at Vista Verde, an all-inclusive dude ranch near Steamboat Springs. The culinary program is worth writing home about, with winter dishes that include carrot cake waffles with walnut syrup, Cuban sandwiches and gnocchi with short rib ragu.

At dinner, add a wine pairing. The guest ranch’s cellar, with more than 90 selections, has received accolades from Wine Spectator.

There are plenty of ways to work up an appetite. The ranch has a fleet of fat tire bikes, plus snowmobiling excursions, tubing, and backcountry ski touring. There also are plenty of groomed trails for beginners. Three-night stays in late winter start at $2,295 per person.

Three Forks Ranch

Near the Colorado-Wyoming border, Three Forks Ranch bills itself as being the “West Kept Secret.” The 200,000-acre ranch has an exclusive partnership with the Mayo Clinic, a healthcare nonprofit that staffs the wellness facility with certified coaches who can provide nutrition advice and personal training.

A stay at the all-inclusive resort includes spa treatments (guests staying three nights can pre-book two services). The ranch also offers private skiing on a mountain that gets blanketed in snow and has 20 runs. Heated snowcats deliver guests to the summit. Nightly rates start at $1,995 per person.

Sundance Trail Guest Ranch

Sundance Trail’s guests have a few options for winter visits at the ranch near Red Feather Lakes. The Country Inn stay includes lodging, meals and morning horseback rides. Or, select the bed-and-breakfast route.

Guests enjoy horseback rides through the Roosevelt National Forest, cozying up by the fireplace and stargazing in the jacuzzi. Gather a group of 8-12 people and the ranch will provide a Murder Mystery getaway. Between meals and horseback rides your group can try to figure out “whodunnit.”

Bed and breakfast nightly rates start at $230 per two-person suite or $170 for single occupancy.
