The 17 best things to do in Santa Monica

Find the best attractions in the beachfront city beyond just the Santa Monica Pier and Third Street Promenade

Michael Juliano

Surrounded by mountains on one side and the  beach  on another, the urban sprawl of Los Angeles seems to melt away as soon as you hit Santa Monica. This beachside city has a charm all of its own and is the essence of that classic postcard picture of Southern California—yes, including a bit of an upscale air and plenty of traffic. But we’re not here to complain about the 10 or PCH. Instead, we’re here to help you fill that coveted, less-trafficked window between morning  rush hour  and  happy hour  or after sunset with the very best things to in Santa Monica, including its most essential attractions.

The best things to do in Santa Monica

Palisades Park

1.  Palisades Park

  • Things to do
  • Santa Monica

For stunning views of the ocean and Santa Monica Mountains, this bluff-top park along Santa Monica’s northern coast is the spot. It’s the classic image of L.A.’s coastline that lives in most people’s heads. You’ll find thicker crowds of tourists in the section by the Santa Monica Pier, so instead keep toward the northern Pacific Palisades-adjacent end, past the stately concrete sculpture at Wilshire and the colorful totem pole at San Vicente.

Go on a Santa Monica and Venice Beach bicycle ride.

Santa Monica Farmers’ Market

2.  Santa Monica Farmers’ Market

  • Markets and fairs

When you’re next sat in a local restaurant and feel tempted to ask the server where the incredibly fresh vegetables on your plate came from, don’t bother. We can save you the trouble and answer that for you: the Santa Monica’s Farmers’ Market, of course. The market takes place on Saturdays and Sundays in other parts of Santa Monica, but the best day to pay a visit is Wednesday (8am–1pm) when it fills Arizona Avenue. Find the rest of L.A.’s best farmers’ markets .

Santa Monica State Beach

3.  Santa Monica State Beach

  • Downtown Santa Monica

Running the length of Santa Monica itself, this huge beach is usually packed with people, but has a festive, summer-holiday feel to it. The main attraction is the world-famous Pier, and the biggest crowds can be found clustered around it. If you’re looking for a more relaxed vibe, stray as far from the pier as you can in either direction and you can find some quieter patches. There are bathrooms, bike paths and paid parking positioned along almost the entire stretch of sand. Looking for more of L.A.’s best beaches ?

Rent a bike and cruise Santa Monica.

Santa Monica Pier

4.  Santa Monica Pier

  • Historic buildings and sites

The center and focal point of Santa Monica Beach, Santa Monica Pier is home to a whole host of different attractions. Pacific Park is a traditional fair with a roller coaster and Ferris wheel, plus plenty of fairground games, an aquarium and a classic carousel housed in the historic Looff Hippodrome. There are also regular outdoor music and film events hosted at the Pier, bringing a different, hipper crowd to the boardwalk.

See the Santa Monica Pier on a guided bike tour.

Aero Theatre

5.  Aero Theatre

  • Movie theaters
  • Independent

The Aero Theatre has been in operation since the 1940, a history and legacy it flaunts with screenings of classic films and contemporary independent cinema. This Art Deco landmark also hosts special feature programs plus director lectures and appearances. The Aero is operated by American Cinematheque, who also programs the Los Feliz Theatre and the famous  Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood —another venue film buffs should take the time to visit (once it wraps up its renovation).

Catch a film at some of our other favorite movie theaters .

The Original Muscle Beach

6.  The Original Muscle Beach

Not to be confused with its showier Venice sibling , this workout playground for grown-ups has given Santa Monica’s biggest and burliest somewhere to sweat and strut their stuff for a century. On weekends, you’ll see some amazing gymnasts tackle the parallel bars, uneven bars and rings swings. Even with all that machismo, the vibe here stays friendly and no one will mind if you choose to get involved, or just sit and take it all in.

Stop by Muscle Beach on a bike tour.

McCabe’s

7.  McCabe’s

  • Music venues
  • price 2 of 4

A revered guitar shop by day, stocked to the ceilings with rare and obscure guitars and other instruments, McCabe’s also has a cozy back room where performances are held in an intimate environment. Gigs are usually held on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays but it’s a worth a visit just to gawp at the dozens of beautiful guitars hanging from the walls.

Santa Monica Stairs

8.  Santa Monica Stairs

Does your idea of a good time involve some serious aerobics and muscle burn? Well, get yourself over to these twin Santa Monica stairs that are a mecca for hard bodies and weekend fitness warriors. You can choose to ascend via either 199 concrete steps or 170 (wider) wooden steps. If it’s all a bit too corwded, jog over to Mesa Road and less well known La Mesa stairs. Blink and you’ll miss the narrow entryway wedged between 404 and 410.

Feel the burn at these other free L.A. workouts .

Third Street Promenade

9.  Third Street Promenade

  • Shopping centers

A four-block pedestrianized stretch that runs down Third Street from Wilshire Boulevard to Colorado Avenue, Third Street Promenade is a pleasant but commonplace parade of mostly familiar names. Though the open-air plaza isn’t quite as buzzing as it once was, there are still some out-of-the-ordinary stops here: The excellent Wednesday morning farmers’ market  is worth a trip, as is an outpost of Silverlake Ramen . Consider grabbing a happy hour drink just around the corner at the Misfit .

Book L.A. tours and attractions.

Tongva Park

10.  Tongva Park

What was once just another concrete parking lot has been transformed into a oceanside oasis of green space at Santa Monica’s Tongva Park. This idyllic and well-designed verdant space includes a playground, waterfalls, walking paths, meadows and a conch-like, wireframe lookout to the Pacific. Sneak over to Chez Jay at the corner of the park for a drink.

Relax in more of the best parks in L.A.

Bergamot Station

11.  Bergamot Station

Home to a slew of different contemporary and fine art galleries, this artsy enclave is the perfect destination for cheap dates and lazy days. If the art doesn’t do anything for you, the edgy architecture, stylish café (housed in an old heater factory that serves meatloaf and mint lemonade), and fragrant stands of wild bergamot scattered about should amp up the atmosphere. And though a number of the galleries have shuttered in recent years, you’ll find fresh activity thanks to standout restaurant Birdie G’s .

Santa Monica Place

12.  Santa Monica Place

  • price 3 of 4

Located at the southern end of the Third Street Promenade, this revamped shopping center is packed with upscale department stores and designer boutiques from brands like Coach and Louis Vuitton. There’s nothing particularly notable about Santa Monica Place (though it is getting a Din Tai Fung ), but it’s a pleasant destination for some retail to-dos thanks to three floors of sophisticated shopping set around an open-air courtyard.

Annenberg Community Beach House

13.  Annenberg Community Beach House

Pool closed Oct–May, grounds open daily.

This modern community beach club was originally built by William Randolph Hearst in the 1920s as an opulent beachfront estate for Hollywood star Marion Davies. These days, it’s very much open to the public. The five-acre beach house includes a recreation room for games as well as a swimming pool, sports facilities, a cafe and paddle board rentals. You can also take a sunset swim on select evenings during the summer.

Splash around in some other public pools throughout L.A.

California Heritage Museum

14.  California Heritage Museum

  • price 1 of 4

Step out of the sun and take in a bit of California history in a restored 1894 house. Though the house itself—devoted to the Victorian period—is worth a look, rotating exhibitions on topics related to the region are the real draw. The museum is at its busiest on Sundays, though only outside: It hosts the Santa Monica farmers’ market every Sunday morning.

Santa Monica Airport

15.  Santa Monica Airport

It’s the oldest operating airfield in L.A. County (though slated to be closed and turned into a park by the end of the decade) and the birthplace of the Douglas DC-3. Originally called Clover Field, the Santa Monica Airport has developed over time into an arts incubator and is home to a number of creative venues housed in converted airplane hangars like the Ruskin Group Theatre Co. and events space the Barker Hangar.

Have an hour to kill near the 10 or the 405? Watch planes land up-close at Santa Monica Airport.

Museum of Flying

16.  Museum of Flying

This small museum dedicated to the history of aviation moved into new premises at the Santa Monica Airport in February 2012. Inside you can learn all about the history of Southern Californian aviation companies including, Boeing, Lockheed, North American and Northrop with numerous exhibits and displays bringing the planes and their stories to life. Flight fans will love the carefully preserved static and flyable aircraft that call this place home.

Santa Monica Camera Obscura

17.  Santa Monica Camera Obscura

Temporarily closed.

This curious old optical contraption is a historical and offbeat place to catch your breath, whether you’re waiting for late stragglers to your dinner reservations or trying to find a quiet escape from the pier. Though the technology behind this rudimentary camera-like room is thousands of years old, it still feels like magic. Have an hour to kill along Ocean Avenue? Take a step inside the Camera Obscura.

10 of the top things to do in Santa Monica: experience the best of this chic beach city

Here are the best things to do in Santa Monica © Tod Seelie / Getty Images

With its three miles of sandy beach, dotted with palm trees on one side and lush mountains on another, the tiny city of Santa Monica – only 16 miles sq – is a quaint and chic beach town. The instantly recognizable pier marks the end of Route 66 , and the spill-over from edgy Venice Beach to the south makes for a heady concoction of tourists, beach bums, and exhibitionists.

On any given day you could see tattooed scalps, monstrous muscles and retirees working on their career tans, amongst the omnipresent smell of weed. But despite pockets of eccentricity, Santa Monica is a smart and chic Los Angeles-adjacent beach town. It's here you'll find plenty of things to do, with trendy cafes for people watching, upscale boutiques for designer shopping, and some of the most expensive real estate in Los Angeles County. These are the top experiences in Santa Monica.

Head to McCabe's Guitar Shop for a night of live music

Hidden in the back of a musical instrument shop, this live venue rose to fame in the 1960s during the folk and blues revival. By day, McCabe’s sells obscure instruments. By night, it turns into a intimate booze-free venue for 150 music aficionados. Legendary artists, from Joni Mitchell and John Lee Hooker to PJ Harvey, the Pixies, Tom Petty, and Elvis Costello, to name but a few, have performed unplugged sets here and modern greats continue to stop by.

A woman stands on the pier in Santa Monica near a large sign marking the end of Route 66

Learn to trapeze on Santa Monica Pier

The historic pier is to Santa Monica what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris – overrun with tourists but no visit is complete without experiencing it. Built in 1909, the pier marks the last stop on Route 66. Incredibly, the 130ft high Pacific Wheel is the only one of its kind on a California pier. It's also the only solar-powered Ferris wheel in the world – take a spin for panoramic views of the city. Then, ride a rollercoaster, play carnival games, and get launched into the sky by an aerialist at an aerial workshop with the resident trapeze school TSNY .

Descend the steep Santa Monica Stairs

This not-so-secret pathway, in between multi-million-dollar houses on Adelaide Drive, plummets through the trees and lush mountains of Santa Monica Canyon via 170 steel and wooden stairs. Originally built in the 1920s, so local kids had a quicker route to school, the steps now attract fitness junkies, who come here to experience the sharp 110ft elevation change and climb the calf-pounding stairway to heart-rate heaven. Much to the dismay of the wealthy local residents, it has become a wildly popular challenge – around 1500 people workout on the narrow steel and wooden stairs every weekend.

Watch a cult movie at a vintage theater

The Aero has been showing movies since the 1940s on its single screen. Originally built by the Douglas Aircraft Company, the name being a nod to the aerospace industry, it still has many original art deco features – including the striking neon sign and single seat ticket office in the entrance hall. The movie house has featured in many films itself, including Donnie Darko (2001), Sleepwalkers  (1992), and Get Shorty  (1995). One of its biggest nights of the year is the annual Dusk-to-Dawn Horrorthon, which takes place around Halloween and screens back-to-back scary movies on 35mm film.

Man swings on suspended rings at an outside gym near Santa Monica beach

Stop for a work-out show on the real muscle beach

Although the one in Venice gets more attention, the original "muscle beach" – an outdoor gym with ropes, rings, and bars – actually opened in Santa Monica in 1934. Venice's version was named the "Weight Pen" before it adopted its "Muscle Beach Venice" moniker. Due to the busy public setting on Santa Monica Beach , with pier and ocean in the background, it's become more of a theater than a gym, with thousands of spectators stopping by each day to take pictures, as obliging resident beefcakes and gymnasts pose in between workouts.

Take a dip at the Annenberg Community Beach House

Originally a grandiose 1920s five-acre beach house built for legendary silent-era film actress Marion Davies, the Annenberg Community Beach House is now a pool and recreation center with beach views and all kinds of classes the public can sign up for. Beach volleyball, soccer and tennis, in addition, to stand-up paddle boarding and surf lessons, are all available. And, of course, don't miss taking a dip in the elaborately tiled swimming pool where Davies swam with the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Clark Gable, and Cary Grant. The adult sunset swims are a particular highlight.

Eat at Santa Monica's best retro restaurants

Near the end of America's most famous drive is Mel's Drive-In – a suitably retro burger joint housed in a Googie-style building designed by prolific "modern" architects Armet and Davis. Inside is a step back in time – high chairs line the counter, patrons sip milkshakes at '60s-style leather booths and a jukebox plays timeless rock ‘n’ roll tunes. Meanwhile, two blocks from the beach, and kitsch in equal measure, is The Galley – believed to be the oldest restaurant in Santa Monica and one of the first in the state. Dressed with nautical junk, red fairy lights and props from the 1962 movie Mutiny on the Bounty , this was once a hangout spot for 1930s movie stars Carole Lombard, Charles Laughton, Errol Flynn, and Edward G Robinson. The seafood and steak are surprisingly good for such a kitschy spot.

Two guitarists busk in a pedestrianized zone with plenty of onlookers

People watch on Third Street Promenade

The tree-lined Third Street Promenade is a rare thing in Southern California – a half-mile-long pedestrian-only road. There are plenty of restaurants, bars, and stores to crawl, but the best way to soak up the atmosphere is to grab a table outside and catch one of the many live street performers, ranging from musicians and comedians to breakdancers and magicians.

Browse one man's life-long curios collection

Part museum, part curiosity shop, part prop rental company, jAdis houses one man's collection of "touches of mankind’s genius". Its doors open at certain times each week, so inquisitive folks can peruse flipbooks and plasma lights, vintage 1930s bathing suits and peculiar scientific instruments or whimsical steampunk contraptions. It also holds a replica of the robot from Fritz Lang’s 1927 film Metropolis .

Visit the Santa Monica Farmers Market

To meet the locals, head to one of the three weekly Santa Monica Farmers Markets , each attracting between 3000 and 10,000 visitors. Local producers and crafters tout their organic fruits, vegetables, flowers, baked goods, and seafood catches here. There's usually free live music to enjoy as you tuck into your bounty. Markets take place on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Santa Monica Pier & Beach

Santa Monica Pier & Beach

Santa Monica Pier & Beach vca_maps_losangeles

Take a stroll along Santa Monica’s signature pier at sunset, that enormous sun sinking into the Pacific, and you'll probably wonder if it can get much better than this. But wait; it can. Right here. First, there’s an amusement park—perched right on the pier—called Pacific Park, with not-too-scary roller coasters and classic carnival rides that make a nice mix even for little ones. Then there are incomparable views from the top of the pier’s solar-powered Ferris wheel. On weekends, you can join free historical walking tours to learn more about the pier, which dates back to 1909. And then there are those simple pleasures—a creamy thick milkshake or a simple necklace of seashells, at snack shacks and trinket shops lining the pier. And there are the local fishermen adding colour to the scene; hang out for a while and you’re bound to hear some good yarns and watch some slippery fish reeled in. Find out what those fish might be by heading under the pier (directly below the turn-of-the-century wooden carousel), to the inviting Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, with some 100 species of fish and aquatic animals, and lots of family-friendly educational displays.

And then of course, there’s the beach, a broad expanse of pale yellow sand lining the coast for 3.5 miles. For the complete beach treatment, explore the ocean atop a paddleboard (various hire equipment and lessons are available) or go VIP with your own Perry’s on the Beach Butler service.

Spotlight: Santa Monica

Santa Monica Pier & Beach Santa Monica Farmers Market | Lo

The oceanfront city of  Santa Monica , lined with its nearly four miles of beaches, feels like a weekend getaway spot, even though it’s only 15 miles/24 kilometres west of downtown Los Angeles. Car-free options—including the light-rail  Expo Line  from downtown L.A., and the  Big Blue Bus —make it a relaxing destination too.

You can hang out on broad beaches or the lively  Santa Monica Pier  (complete with its own amusement park and rides) without having to stress about traffic or parking. Another great way to get around:  rent cruiser bikes  (rental shops abound) to follow the Marvin Braude Coastal Bike Trail. Known locally as “The Strand,” the paved, multi-use path follows the oceanfront for roughly 22 miles, from Santa Monica south to Torrance.

Whichever way you explore this beach town, the key is to take your time (and, ideally, stay at one of the luxurious oceanfront  hotels ). After all, this is a prime area to see stars going about their business in their own neighbourhood, strolling the shops along Montana Avenue, or browsing the celebrity-chef-worthy produce at the  farmers’ markets  (the town has several each, in different locations).

Or, dine on those chefs’ creations: Santa Monica is home a to a long list of bucket-list restaurants, from Wolfgang Puck’s  Chinois  to Josiah Citrin’s  Mélisse .

5 Amazing Things to Do in Santa Monica

5 Amazing Things to Do in Santa Monica

Over the years,  Santa Monica  has never lost its beach town soul, even as it has become more glamorous with luxury beachfront hotels, fine dining, and high-end boutiques. Today you can experience the best of both worlds: broad California beaches with surfing and volleyball, plus a sophisticated, city-within-a-city scene. On your next visit, try some of Santa Monica’s ultimate experiences.

Wake up by the beach in a stylish hotel

If you’ve ever dreamed of your own beach cottage, it probably felt a bit like  Shutters on the Beach . Effortlessly chic, this grey-shingled hotel’s bright and breezy rooms are both relaxed and elegant, with balconies overlooking the expansive sands of Santa Monica’s beach. Hang by the pool or rent a beach cruiser at the hotel, then set out on the bike path that stretches for 22 miles along the shore. Shutters is just one of many high-end resorts to choose from in Santa Monica; other fantastic options include  Casa Del Mar ,  Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows , and the  Viceroy Santa Monica .

Take a stroll along a historic pier

A lot of fun begins where  Route 66  ends, on the landmark  Santa Monica Pier . Its neon gateway sign is one of Southern California’s most recognizable icons, and the pier, which opened in 1909, puts you out over the surf, with spectacular views up and down the coast. Go for a spin on the beautifully preserved 1922 Looff Hippodrome carousel and catch a glimpse of the world beneath the waves at the  Santa Monica Pier Aquarium .

Enjoy old-school fun at Pacific Park

With its updated roller coasters and bumper cars,  Pacific Park , on the Santa Monica Pier, brings the classic amusement park experience into a new era. The West Coast’s only amusement park on a pier, Pacific Park has an arcade where you can fine-tune your skills at Whac-A-Mole or the Balloon Bust. Then take a ride and enjoy incredible coastal panoramas on the Pacific Wheel, the world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel.

Escape to a bungalow on the bluffs

Inspired by both Santa Monica’s chilled-out vibe and the romance of a Baja California-style casita,  The Bungalow  is the beach life incarnate. With its raftered ceilings, funky furnishings, and game room, this hideaway on the grounds of the  Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows  is like a private beach club—as conceived by surfers. Hang out on the patio with a craft cocktail as you take in one of Santa Monica’s unforgettable sunsets.

Browse the Third Street Promenade

With an all-star retail line-up that includes the likes of Lululemon, Abercrombie & Fitch, and a spectacular Apple Store, the open-air  Third Street Promenade  is a shoppers’ paradise. Browse the stores as you walk this vehicle-free street, where street musicians serenade passers-by and the fantastical topiary dinosaurs add a whimsical touch.

Also, don’t miss…

Art lovers will definitely want to stop at the 26th Street Art Center, a onetime water-heater factory and warehouse complex that’s now home to one of Southern California’s leading collection of galleries. And for high-end fashions in a low-key setting, go to  Montana Avenue , where you’ll find cool boutiques, restaurants, and a good chance of spotting a few A-list celebrities.

Santa Monica Pier & Beach vca_resource_diningsantamonica_256x180

Santa Monica Shopping

Explore one or all of Santa Monica’s  eight neighbourhoods , each boasting its own unique identity and experience. Downtown, pedestrian-only  Third Street Promenade , four blocks east of the beach, offers big-name brands like Abercrombie & Fitch, H&M, Old Navy, as well as galleries, movie theatres, and comedy shows. On the promenade’s south end is luxurious, open-air  Santa Monica Place .

It’s not all about chains here. On Main Street, peruse handmade accessories and gifts by local artists at  Mindfulnest , or shop for unique home goods at  Lost and Found . Kids go crazy playing dress-up and just plain playing in the  Acorn Store , specializing in wooden toys.

The promenade keeps things lively too, with entertaining street performers, especially on weekends (permits required, so the bar tends to be higher here than just your average street-corner act).

For another slice of heavenly shopping, stroll along  Montana Avenue  downtown. If you’re into flea markets, beeline to Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture. Get your skin “mapped” during a spoil-yourself facial at Dermalogica. And find ultra-hip outfits at Jill Roberts and a flurry of other designer boutiques.

Santa Monica Farmers’ Market

If you like a little stargazing while you shop, the assorted farmers’ markets held in this coastal city are a good bet for spotting celebs loading up on fresh organic fruit and veg. On Saturday and Wednesday mornings, several blocks of Arizona Avenue in town are blocked off for a massive market, jammed with impossibly attractive locals. This market is known as a showcase for local chefs, who do weekly cooking demos using ingredients from that day’s market.

Santa Monica Dining

With restaurants helmed by both celebrity chefs and rising culinary stars, Santa Monica boasts a sizzling-hot dining scene. Start with a classic, Chinois on Main, where Wolfgang Puck pioneered the fusion style of cooking. There’s also Michael McCarty’s Michael’s restaurant, a landmark for California cuisine since 1979.

Michelin-starred French cuisine, including an impeccable Kagoshima Wagyu beef filet, can be enjoyed at Josiah Citrin’s Mélisse. Sample irresistible creations (don’t miss the maple-bacon biscuits) at breakfast hotspot Huckleberry Bakery & Café, home to James Beard award-winning pastry chef Zoe Nathan. (Her pastries and desserts, like Champagne chocolate tart and sticky toffee pudding, are also served at farm-to-table Rustic Canyon restaurant).

Even burgers get the special treatment in Santa Monica: Head to gastropub Father’s Office for chef Sang Yoon’s deliciously decadent burger topped with a smoked-bacon and caramelized-onion compote, and gruyere and Maytag blue cheeses. Just don’t ask for ketchup. Yoon doesn’t allow anyone to mess with his masterpieces.

Venice is the ultimate L.A. neighborhood where the surf meets the human circus. Spend a day along Venice’s palm-lined, beachfront boardwalk and you might spot a skateboarding guitarist, a guy juggling chainsaws, bodybuilders, and bikinis. You may also see some of the country’s best pickup basketball games on local outdoor courts, as well as fearless skateboarders on the skateboard nestled right in the sands of Venice Beach. Find a bench to watch the passing parade, or become part of it, by renting beach cruiser bikes to follow Venice’s stretch of the 22-mile Marvin Braude Coastal Bike Trail, linking Santa Monica to Torrance. For a truly wild experience, find something to bang with (an empty soda can and your car keys will do) and join the nightly drum circle out on the beach.

Walk inland away from the beach to discover a different Venice. The town’s most popular street, stroll-able Abbot Kinney Boulevard, is a shopping treasure trove. Browse for designer duds in stylish boutiques that draw Hollywood celebs, and search for home furnishings—from vintage to mid-century. Blend your own scents at Strange Invisible Perfumes. Cafes and food trucks make sure you don’t go hungry while you shop. And yes there are canals in Venice: Stroll past the original cottages, lush gardens, and modern homes of the Venice Canal Historic District.

They are big enough to share. –  Sharael Kolberg, Contributor, Travel

West of downtown Los Angeles, Santa Monica contains one of the most legendary beach scenes in the United States. It also boasts an abundance of great restaurants and excellent nightlife spots. Its more than 3 miles of shoreline are renowned as some of the best in the area thanks to the soft sands, ideal weather and bevy of attractions. "State Beach," as it's known, has more than 300 days of sunshine a year and acted as the backdrop for the popular TV series "Baywatch."

Santa Monica is a very walkable part of town, and many recent travelers suggest you explore the area by bicycle (a few of the best California tours offer guided cycling trips along the beach). One of the most scenic bike rides is along the 22-mile paved path, known as The Strand, which runs parallel to the Pacific Ocean and takes riders through Marina del Rey and Playa del Rey along with Venice , Manhattan, Hermosa and Redondo beaches.

Many beachgoers say the Santa Monica Pier is a must-visit spot and fun to see. Travelers recommend riding the Ferris wheel. Visitors can also zip around on a roller coaster, catch lively street performances, play carnival games and grab a bite to eat from one of the food vendors or at a sit-down restaurant. Several bemoaned the high price tag on some of the pier's food and attractions – ride tickets cost $5 to $15 each – but with free entry, your losses will probably be mitigated. Unlimited rides wristbands are also available for $30 to $50. The pier is open daily, year-round, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Hours vary for local shops and restaurants. Parking is plentiful and will cost you; fees vary depending on the season and lot location. Travelers can also get to the area by taking the Metro E Line. Most recent visitors cited the beautiful setting as Griffith Observatory's main draw, though the free entry was certainly a bonus. However, you will have to pay between $6 and $10 to see the planetarium shows. Visit Santa Monica for a Day or a Weekend

visit santa monica beach

TripSavvy / Christian Hundley

Santa Monica  is one of the best places in California to enjoy both a lively beach scene and a city atmosphere all within a few minutes' walk of each other. In fact, National Geographic calls it one of the top 10 beach cities in the world, ranking it among places like Honolulu and Rio de Janeiro.

Why to Choose Santa Monica

TripSavvy / Christian Hundley

You may want to go to Santa Monica just because you've heard so much about it. In that case, you're ready to browse the things you can do and  pick a place to stay .

You will also like Santa Monica if you want to spend the day at the beach and the evening at a good restaurant . Its thriving arts scene may also be appealing. Hotels are on the expensive side, but you'll find plenty of moderately-priced places to eat downtown.

Best Time to Go

The most popular time to go to Santa Monica is summer, but the beach can get so crowded on summer weekends that you might have a hard time seeing the sand from all the people standing on it. May and June are also prone to gloomy, foggy days when the sun never shines. That happens so often that it has a name: "May Gray" and " June Gloom ."

Santa Monica weather is best in spring and fall, and in winter as long as it isn't raining.

Looking for Romance?

If your idea of a romantic getaway involves walking hand in hand on the beach at sunset , having a meal at a restaurant, or staying in a hotel room with an ocean view, Santa Monica is a great place to visit.

Things to Do

TripSavvy / Christian Hundley

Millions of visitors go to Santa Monica every year. Most of them are day-trippers, but some stay overnight. No matter how long you plan to spend there, you'll want some ideas on how to spend your time.

Most Popular Activities

If you look at photos of Santa Monica online, you could easily conclude that the beach and pier are the only things in town. This short list of things to do near the ocean includes the places people go most often.

  • Santa Monica Pier and Pacific Park: Santa Monica Pier is the home to one of the few remaining oceanfront amusement parks. It's also LA's only admission free amusement park. Go in the late afternoon to watch the sunset and stay to see the lighted rides at night.
  • Santa Monica Beach : The beach at Santa Monica is big—3 miles long and covering 245 acres of sand—and it has great views. It can be crowded near the pier, but you'll have more space to spread out just a short walk away from it.
  • Beachfront Pathway: The paved, level beachfront pathway runs all the way from Will Rogers State Park north of Santa Monica to Redondo Beach, a trip of about 25 miles one way. The pathway passes through Venice Beach and runs past the end of the LAX runway, where you can watch airplanes taking off overhead. You can walk on it, run on it, or bike on it. If you left your wheels at home, Santa Monica Beach Bike Rentals is well rated.
  • Palisades Park: The narrow sliver of land between Ocean Avenue and the cliffs' edge is actually a city park. It's a great place for a walk or a run, and if you like unusual things, check out the Camera Obscura at 1450 Ocean. It's an optical device built in 1899 that brings the outside scene inside in an interesting way.
  • Santa Monica Farmers Markets: Not only do these outdoor markets have things you could take home to cook, but you'll also find stands selling things you can eat on the spot. On Wednesday and Saturday mornings, the market is on Arizona Avenue between Second and Third Street; on Sunday, it's at 2640 Main Street.

More Creative Options

  • Museum of Flying :  If you're into aviation history, this one is for you. Founded as the Douglas Museum by Donald Douglas Jr., it focuses on Southern California's aviation industry and has several interesting aircraft on display.
  • Trapeze School : If you ever wanted to run away and join the circus, or if you just like the idea of flying around through the air, you might want to take a lesson here.
  • Take a Surfing Lesson: Just search online for "Santa Monica surfing lessons," and you'll come up with dozens of companies willing to teach you.

Annual Events You Should Know About in Santa Monica

  • Twilight Concerts at the Pier:   Free concerts take place on selected Wednesdays in August and September along with a Pier-wide festival, complete with immersive art, food offerings, a beer and spirits garden, games and interactive activations along the Pier promenade.

Santa Monica With Kids

  • Most kids love to play at the beach, and the whole family can go for a bike ride on the paved, long, flat oceanfront path.
  • From a distance, all the rides at Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier look like they're designed for bigger kids, but you'll also find a lot of smaller, fun ones for the little guys. While you're on the pier, check out the kid-friendly aquarium, too.
  • If the kids need to work off some excess energy, try the playground at  Tongva Park . It's located just across the street from the entrance to the pier and the very cool play area is in the back corner.
  • Adventurous youngsters might also enjoy the Trapeze School or surfing lessons, mentioned above.

Shopping Destinations

If you came to Santa Monica to shop, these are a few ideas for places to go, with their pros and cons:

  • Third Street Promenade :  You'll hear a lot of hype about this pedestrian-only shopping area. Lots of people give high ratings in online reviews, but if you live in a place that already has a lot of mid-range chain stores, you may find it a bit ho-hum.
  • Santa Monica Place : This open-air shopping mall's stores include Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom.
  • Montana Avenue : It's my top pick if you're looking for something more interesting and unique than the chain shops on Third Street. You'll find more than 100 high-end boutiques and places to eat along the 10-block stretch. It's easy to start your exploration at Montana and Lincoln.
  • Santa Monica Airport Flea Market : This outdoor market is held on the first and fourth Sunday of each month. It's said that you can furnish an entire house in one visit to this massive market. You can also deck yourself out with estate jewelry and vintage fashion, or get something new for your garden.

Art and Design

  • Santa Monica Design District: This area has lots of showrooms dedicated to modern home and workplace furnishings and design.
  • Bergamot : It doesn't look like much from the street, but once you get inside, you'll find more than 30 art galleries featuring some interesting contemporary art. You may go thinking you'll spend a few minutes and end up wandering around for hours. It's a good thing they have a place to eat on site.

Architecture

Santa Monica is a good place for any architecture junkie to see an interesting mix of styles and eras.

  • Charles Eames House:  One of about two dozen homes built as part of the Case Study Project in the 1950s, created by Charles and Ray Eames as an example of a home for two working artists. It's a little north of Santa Monica proper in Pacific Palisades.
  • Art Deco Hotels: If you love art deco style, the Georgian and Shangri-La hotels are great examples of the style.
  • Frank Gehry Residence: Did you know that Frank Gehry's deconstructionist Santa Monica home played a big part in his career direction?
  • Julia Morgan: The property that is now the Annenberg Beach House once was the home of actress Marion Davies, William Randolph Hearst's longtime girlfriend. The former guest house (which is part of a much larger property designed by Morgan) is open for docent tours .

If you're in Santa Monica long enough to think you want to explore a little further , you can take day trips to nearby areas like  Malibu ,  Marina Del Rey , or Venice Beach . Alternatively, you can take a road trip on the  Pacific Coast Highway  and enjoy the views.

What You Need to Know

TripSavvy / Christian Hundley

Where to Stay

Even though Santa Monica is a beach city, don't expect every hotel to be right on the beach. In fact, hotels that appear to be just across the road from the beach may be on a bluff above it. Finding an affordable, nice place can also be a challenge, but there's no need to worry.

Where is Santa Monica?

Santa Monica is in Los Angeles County and the nearest airport is LAX . It's about 20 miles west of downtown LA , which is a 30 minute-plus drive, depending on traffic. It can be extremely hard to find parking in Santa Monica due to the proximity of the downtown shopping area, the beach, and pier, and it's even more difficult to find free parking.

According to the City of Santa Monica website, 80% of hotel visitors do not use a car once they arrive in Santa Monica. Think about joining them and taking public transportation if you can. The LA Metro Expo Line began operating between downtown LA and Santa Monica in 2015.

From roller coasters to iconic restaurants, shops, games, and beautiful coastal views, the Santa Monica Pier is one of the most recognizable, must-see spots in Los Angeles!

The Santa Monica Pier, with its amusement park, beach, and proximity to the city, is one of the most iconic attractions for visitors to Los Angeles and Southern California.

It hasn’t gained its reputation as a national historic landmark without reason!

Below is a list of dining options ranging from grab-and-go to fine dining, both in and around the Santa Monica Pier.

On the Pier:

  • Soda Jerks: Inside the historic carousel building, Soda Jerks appeals to nostalgia with classic 1940s American ice cream and soda shop vibes.
  • PierBurger : A classic all-American burger joint with window service as well as indoor and outdoor dining.
  • Bubba Gump Shrimp : Arguably the most famous of the Santa Monica Pier restaurants, Bubba Gump Shrimp is part of the iconic American seafood chain made famous by the film Forest Gump.
  • Seaside on the Pier : Fresh seafood and classic American food in a casual setting.

Off the Pier:

  • Cassia: An award-winning, upscale South Asian cuisine spot recognized as one of LA’s top restaurants. One of the more pricey dining options.
  • Birdie G’s: American cuisine with Eastern European influence served in a trendy, industrial setting in Bergamot Station.
  • Crudo e Nudo : Local, fresh seafood with modern Italian twists, in a cozy setting.

History & Fun Facts About the Santa Monica Pier

Amusement park rides on the boardwalk at the Santa Monica Pier, with ocean waves beneath it and a partly-cloudy sky behind it.

The Santa Monica Pier was built in 1909 and became the West Coast’s first concrete pier, reaching 1600 feet into the ocean!

Interestingly, the Santa Monica Pier was originally designed to help with the city’s sewage disposal into the ocean.

The original purpose was abandoned quickly (thank goodness!), and the pier instantly became a favorite destination for fishing and other forms of leisure.

In 1916, entrepreneur Charles Looff constructed the Looff Pleasure Pier on the municipal pier. His first project was the carousel, which still operates today!

Looff’s vision then expanded to include a roller coaster, bowling and billiards, and a games room.

The pier has a long history of resilience between the Great Depression and a devastating storm in 1983, which destroyed a third of the pier.

In 1996 the Pacific Park opened, returning the pier to its former amusement status with a rollercoaster and many more rides and games!

  • The white and blue arch of the Santa Monica Yacht Harbor is a historical icon dating back to the 1940s internationally renowned boat dock. The first person to buy space for his boat was Charlie Chaplin, making this a popular location for tourists to see stars.
  • The Pier collapsed during the Great Depression, causing one LA local to open a casino on his boat off the shore. For some time, the pier was a seedier, not-so-family-friendly place.
  • The pier has been featured in several Hollywood films, including Forest Gump, The Sting, Hancock, Her, 2012, Iron Man, Rocky 3 , and many more!
  • The Pacific Wheel is the world’s first solar-powered ferris wheel!

Santa Monica Pier Directions, Parking & How to Get There

A view of the road and parking lot for the Santa Monica Pier, with amusement park rides and the beach in the background.

If you’re driving

If you’re heading to Santa Monica by car, the area is located right on the Pacific Coast Highway, making it a popular stop for California road-trippers heading south down the coast.

Parking is made easier thanks to this real-time parking map . Here are a few of my preferred locations:

  • Parking lot on the Pier | 300 Santa Monica Pier
  • Lot 1 North | 1550 Appian Way
  • Hot Dog on a Stick | 1633 Ocean Front Walk

Other options

There’s also an accessible city transit system in LA that offers relatively direct access to Santa Monica daily.

If you’re coming from Los Angeles by foot, Bus 8 Downtown Santa Monica / UCLA will bring you right to the pier at Ocean Avenue and Colorado Avenue.

Another fun option is to use LA’s bike share service , which is a bike rental platform that reaches all over Los Angeles by bicycle.

This is definitely my preferred way to get around the coastal beach areas in order to avoid looking for parking!

Best Time to Visit the Santa Monica Pier

People strolling on the beach at sunset, with the Santa Monica Pier in the background.

While the Santa Monica Pier is bustling year-round, it is definitely most lively through the summer months, May-September.

This is when many of the events happen, the Trapeze school is open, and all the street performers are out to share their tricks.

That said, it can get quite hot between July and August. Make sure you prepare the family for the summer heat or spend part of the day on Santa Monica State Beach!

I would also recommend an earlier start if you’re hoping to find convenient parking and beat some of the lines.

Try to get there around 10:30-11am and stay into the early afternoon, and then perhaps stroll down off the pier onto Ocean Avenue and find yourself a nice spot for food in the area.

Tips for Visiting the Santa Monica Pier

Silhouette of amusement park rides at the Santa Monica Pier, with the sun setting behind it.

  • If you’re visiting on a budget, I’d recommend eating breakfast beforehand or hitting one of the fruit stands or coffee kiosks down the beach on the boardwalk before the pier. This will save you a couple of bucks on food before you get started!
  • Save the solar-powered ferris wheel for sunset and take in the stunning views of the horizon! Santa Monica Pier at night is absolutely beautiful.
  • After a day spent on the pier, take a bike ride south along the bike paths beside the beach and parks at sunset, and find yourself in Venice Beach for the evening!
  • Santa Monica hotels can be surprisingly affordable, especially if you choose to go a little bit more inland–just remember to book in advance.

What is so special about the Santa Monica Pier? Is it Worth Visiting?

Six young people in bathing suits laughing and splashing water at the each other in the waves at the beach, with the Santa Monica Pier behind them.

So, is it worth all the hype?

Absolutely. Taking a walk along the pier, hanging out at the nearby Santa Monica State Beach, eating from all the food stalls, and admiring the beautiful sunset–there’s not much better.

It’s definitely a really fun way to spend a Los Angeles summer day with the family and experience so many iconic establishments. It’s a must-see for a Los Angeles visitor and an iconic Southern California staple!

A Quick Overview: Venice Beach vs Santa Monica

Venice beach: a quick overview.

Venice Beach is situated in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Venice. It’s over in the Westside of LA, and it was named after Venice, Italy – in fact, this place was originally called “Venice of America”, when it was founded back in 1905.

The history of Venice Beach is quite fascinating. It was designed and developed by a man named Abbot Kinney.

Kinney bought the land and dug miles of marshes to drain it. He then set about constructing a pier, a dance hall, a new auditorium, and Venetian-style buildings. He hoped to create his own seaside resort town.

These days, Venice Beach might not be exactly as Kinney envisioned, and it’s very different to its Italian namesake, but it’s still one of the top tourist spots in LA.

People come from far and wide to visit Venice Beach, enjoying its soft sands, riding the waves with their surfboards, or admiring the bodybuilders over at Muscle Beach.

Famed for its eccentric, eclectic nature, Venice Beach is an unusual but charming place to be.

It has a massive skate park, family attractions, sports courts, fortune-tellers, street performers, and more, almost feeling like a huge, open-air circus, making it the perfect spot for people-watching and various other activities.

Santa Monica: A Quick Overview

Unlike Venice, which is technically a neighborhood of LA, Santa Monica is an entirely separate city.

It runs along Santa Monica Bay and is one of the most popular resort cities in all of California, beloved by many for its restaurants, lively nightlife scene, and the wonderful Santa Monica Beach, which runs for around 3.5 miles in total.

While Venice had Abbot Kinney as its architect, Santa Monica’s design was devised by a pair of wealthy mining entrepreneurs, Colonel Robert S. Baker and Senator John P. Jones.

The pair bought some coastal land and got to work, hoping to build an industrial port. In the end, they changed direction, constructing a tourist resort instead.

Despite being situated right next door to Venice, Santa Monica has a totally different vibe.

It’s widely-considered to be much more upmarket, boasting a range of glamorous hotels, designer boutiques, and even an array of Michelin-starred restaurants, offering gourmet experiences at high prices.

The deluxe, refined atmosphere of Santa Monica stands in stark contrast to the more casual, funfair vibes of Venice.

The beach itself is a terrific swimming and sunbathing spot, and there are plenty of places to shop, dine, and relax in the surrounding streets.

One of the reasons why so many people flock to Venice Beach and Santa Monica is due to their long lists of attractions.

From typical seaside activities like sunbathing, swimming, and strolling along the sand to more unusual things to do, there’s plenty to keep you entertained in both of these beautiful locations.

However, the experiences are notably different, depending on which location you choose.

Venice, for instance, is renowned for being much more surprising and quirky, and one of the best things to do there is simply roam around and take in all the sights and sounds and colors that surround you, enjoying the street performers and admiring the locals.

Meanwhile, Santa Monica offers more traditional experiences, like shopping or splashing around in the water with family and friends. It’s also famous for its awesome pier, home of thrilling Pacific Park attractions, like a Ferris wheel and a super steel rollercoaster.

Let’s take a closer look at the main things to do in each location!

Venice Beach: The Activities

Visiting Venice Beach is an experience of its own. This place is so unique and different to anywhere else in Los Angeles, and one of the best ways to take it all in is to walk along the two-mile-long Venice Beach Boardwalk. This’ll take you past the most-visited spots, like Muscle Beach and the amazing skate park.

Along the way, you’re sure to encounter all sorts of interesting people, from buskers and street performers to bodybuilders, skaters, hippies, and more.

People watching is a huge part of the fun, but don’t forget to check out the Art Walls, a haven for street artists and graffiti gurus from across the globe.

For a totally different kind of walking tour, stroll alongside the Venice Canals. Here, you’ll see a very different side of the neighborhood, with charming residential homes and tranquil streets.

You can even get out onto the water with your own paddleboard, canoe, or kayak – various rental companies make it easy to find your vessel of choice.

Other landmarks and attractions include the weekly Venice Farmers Market, perfect for picking up some fresh produce, and the main shopping and dining street of Abbot Kinney Boulevard, home to quirky souvenir stores and intriguing art galleries.

Or, for something more active, put your surfing, skating, or sports skills to the test.

Santa Monica: The Activities

Venice may have a boardwalk, but Santa Monica has a truly incredible pier, and one of the best things to do in Santa Monica is stroll along the pier, enjoying all the attractions along the way.

There are some great spots to simply watch the waves or admire the scenery, along with an exciting theme park – Pacific Park – at the end.

Palisades Park is another terrific spot to walk and take in the beauty and ambiance of Santa Monica.

You can enjoy breathtaking views of the ocean from here, or snap some photos with the Santa Monica Mountains in the background. It’s a lovely place for long, romantic walks with someone special by your side.

Shopping is another popular activity in Santa Monica. There’s a great farmers’ market each week along Arizona Avenue, along with plenty of high-end boutiques dotted across the city, not far from the beach.

The Santa Monica Place mall is also worth checking out for a few hours, filled with big brand stores selling clothes, accessories, and more.

Santa Monica also houses a couple of museums, like the Museum of Flying, dedicated entirely to the art of aviation, and the California Heritage Museum, which lets you take a step back in time to the origins of the city itself.

Galleries are also numerous here, like Bergamot Station, and there are plenty of interesting annual events like the Santa Monica Film Festival

Overall, the activities in both areas are quite different. You’ll find more typical cultural experiences and a wider range of ways to spend time in the larger Santa Monica area, but Venice Beach has a distinctly quirky appeal that really should not be missed.

Which Is Better For Beaches?

Of course, one of the main draws of both Venice Beach and Santa Monica is the beach itself.

The weather in this part of California is warm and sunny for large parts of the years, and the sands here are perfect for lots of fun activities. But which are has the better beach experiences overall?

Well, Venice Beach is about two miles long. It’s not as vast as Santa Monica State Beach, but there’s still a lot to see and love about this place.

As mentioned above, the famous Venice Beach Boardwalk runs along the length of the beach, so there are always people to see, performers to admire, and things going on, giving the beach a very lively, vibrant feel.

There are also several things to do on this beach, like playing beach volleyball or basketball at the local courts, working out with the equipment of Muscle Beach, or heading out onto the water. Venice Beach has some of the best surfing conditions in the entire area too.

In Santa Monica, Santa Monica State Beach is the place to be. It’s bigger than Venice Beach, with more space for people to spread out.

This means that it’s a little easier to find a quiet section of sand, if you want to get away from the crowds and noise. The waters are excellent for swimming and surfing – lifeguards are always on duty here – and there are various concessions and play areas for little ones.

Santa Monica State Beach is also more accessible than Venice Beach.

It has wooden walkways for guests with disabilities, and there are various volleyball courts, public chess tables, and the pier with all of its attractions to enjoy. Santa Monica also has its own Muscle Beach, known as the “Original Muscle Beach” for workout fanatics.

Overall, both beaches are a lot of fun and rank among California’s must-see sandy expanses.

Venice is exciting and unusual compared to most other beaches along the West Coast, while Santa Monica is a little more traditional and arguably more appealing, due to its larger size.

Which Is Better For Shopping?

Shopping is a great way to spend some time during your visit to either Santa Monica or Venice Beach. Both areas have multiple stores, boutiques, and even markets. But which one is best?

Well, that will ultimately depend on what kinds of stores you like to browse and what products you’re looking for.

The shopping scene in Venice Beach is almost as quirky as the local population, with a myriad of interesting stores to be found along Abbot Kinney Boulevard and the adjoining streets.

You’ll find big, recognizable fashion brands here, as well as awesome bookstores like Small World Books and plenty of souvenir emporiums with funny T-shirts and gifts to take back home.

Given the more elegant and sophisticated nature of Santa Monica, it’s no surprise that this area is dominated by designer boutiques and luxury stores, especially along Third Street Promenade.

The likes of Louis Vuitton and Tiffany are easy to find here, but there’s also space for awesome indie stores like McCabe’s Guitar Shop, which also hosts live gigs, and fun farmers’ markets.

Overall, shopaholics will probably find more to love in Santa Monica’s store-lined streets and malls.

It’s a great place to find high-end fashion, along with lots of other items, while Venice Beach is mainly suited to souvenir shopping and not a lot else.

Which Is Better For Nightlife?

Despite being a really lively and dynamic place during the daytime, Venice Beach actually feels pretty quiet and calm in the evenings.

You’ll still find some people strolling along the boardwalk or hanging out in some of the local bars, but there isn’t a big club or nightlife scene in this part of LA, in general.

It’s a pretty different story over in Santa Monica. There, visitors can take their pick from a range of rooftop bars, nightclubs, and other evening hangout spots.

Even the Pacific Park amusement park stays open pretty late, and the area continues to feel busy and lively, well after the sun has set.

So, if you love staying out late and prefer to party or visit bars and clubs instead of heading back to your hotel for an early night, Santa Monica is definitely the better place to be.

Which Is Better For Food?

When it comes to food, you’ll find no shortage of great places to grab a bite in Santa Monica.

There are lots of luxury, Michelin-starred restaurants for the wealthy, jet-set crowd, but you can also find simpler eateries for the average family on vacation, with a great mix of American diners, Italian pizzerias, and great Asian restaurants, too.

Venice Beach also has a diverse food scene, ranging from cheap street food all the way up to fancy, high-end establishments with small portions and high prices.

Given the area’s Italian-inspired origins, Italian food is pretty popular here, and you can easily grab a piping hot slice of pizza or sit down for some scrumptious pasta dishes while looking out over the beach.

Overall, both areas have impressive food, with a myriad of menus to choose from.

There’s no clear winner, although it’s easier to find cheap eats in Venice Beach but Santa Monica wins in terms of high quality cooking.

Which Has The Best Hotels?

If you’re planning to spend a few nights in and around the Venice Beach or Santa Monica areas, you’ll also need to consider what kinds of hotels and accommodation options are available.

This is another area in which Venice Beach and Santa Monica have some notable differences.

Unsurprisingly, Santa Monica is home to the more luxurious accommodation. Here, it’s easy to find glamorous 5-star spots with waterfront views and large, cozy rooms.

Some of the local hotels even go above and beyond with their amenities, including beach butlers and world-class spa treatments, and many of them will rent out beach equipment or surfing gear, too.

Over in Venice, accommodation tends to be simpler and cheaper.

There are lots of hippy surf-shack style hostels, only a short walk from the sand, along with some fun family-friendly places to stay, but you shouldn’t expect the same high standards of service or long lists of features and amenities here.

Overall, the hotels of Santa Monica are undoubtedly nicer and much more indulgent, but budget-conscious travelers will probably prefer the cheaper rates of Venice Beach.

Luxury: Venice Beach House is a gorgeous property set beside the beach. The garden, rooms and decor are beautiful, and a stay here really does feel like your own slice of paradise. See photos and rates!

Which Is Best For Families?

If you’re heading to the coast with the kids, you’ll want to choose an area that’s safe, fun, and engaging for the entire family. Both Santa Monica and Venice Beach fit the bill, but one area might be a little more family-friendly than the other.

Even though Santa Monica has glitzy spa hotels and feels more mature than Venice Beach, it’s still a very kid-friendly destination.

Kids can have the time of their lives riding the attractions and playing the games of the pier and Pacific Park, and families can easily find space to have fun on the sands of Santa Monica State Beach.

Children of all ages can also marvel at the circus-like playground of Venice Beach, with its vibrant locals and unpredictability.

There are fun activities here, like watching the skaters at the skate park or admiring the talents of buskers and street artists.

However, the crowded and hectic nature of Venice Beach may be a bit too much for families with little ones.

Overall, most families will prefer the experience of Santa Monica, and you can always hop over to Venice Beach for a couple of hours to take it all in, since the two areas are right next door to one another.

Which Is Best For Couples?

For couples, the choice between Venice Beach and Santa Monica can be a tricky one to make.

It all depends on the tastes and desires of you and your partner; some couples might love the eclectic excitement of Venice, but others will favor the laid-back luxury of Santa Monica.

If you choose to visit Venice Beach as a couple, you can spend several hours slowly roaming along the boardwalk, taking in all the unique sights that surround you.

There are plenty of pleasant spots to simply sit, talk, and watch the world go by, and the beach is great for couples to sunbathe or surf together.

However, in terms of romance and comfort, Santa Monica takes the win. It has nicer hotels, many of which offer fine dining and spa treatments if you and your partner are looking for a little indulgence.

It also has a bigger beach for walking and watching the sunset, along with a generally more romantic feel in the air.

Full length shot of an affectionate young couple sharing an intimate moment at the beach

Cost is one of the big factors to take into consideration whenever you’re choosing between two travel destinations, especially if you’re working with a limited budget and want to get the best value for money.

Even though they’re situated right beside one another, Venice Beach and Santa Monica have pretty different average costs.

And it’s Venice Beach which is usually a lot cheaper for things like accommodation and food.

Typically, you’ll spend more money per day visiting Santa Monica. However, if you book your hotel in advance and plan your itinerary with care, it’s perfectly possible to have a budget-friendly stay in either of these locations.

Venice Beach vs Santa Monica: Which Is The Better Choice?

It’s amazing to see how two locations right next to each other can be so different!

Sure, Venice Beach and Santa Monica have a few things in common, like great food, golden sands, and fun attractions, but they’re totally different in terms of their general vibes and the kinds of experiences you can expect to have.

But which one is best? Well, both places have their plus points, but we have to recommend Santa Monica to the majority of travelers.

Santa Monica is bigger, with more to see and do, and more chilled-out vibes. It also has better accommodation, slightly superior food, and a much livelier nightlife scene, as well as more family attractions.

All-in-all, Venice Beach can’t quite match Santa Monica as a vacation destination, but it’s still worth checking out, especially for those who love the quirkier things in life.

There’s a lot to see there, and no two days are ever quite the same along the Venice Beach Boardwalk. So, even if you’re staying in Santa Monica, try to make time to see Venice too.
