7 Absolutely Iconic Queso Spots In Austin

Queso is a quintessential Austin food. It’s a melty, gooey, shareable dish of cheese + various toppings, and it’s always served with crip, salty tortilla chips (some are better than others…more on that later.) Visitors always want to know where to find the best queso in Austin, so here’s a roundup of 7 great options for you to try.

Torchy's Queso in Austin

Sometimes queso is vegetarian (or even vegan, like the cashew queso at Picnik Austin .) But most of the time you’ll find that this melted cheese dish is served with chorizo, beef, or even smoked brisket, and various savory toppings like onions, cilantro, peppers, and guacamole.

What is this about the chips? Well, kind of like the importance of tortillas when you’re considering breakfast tacos, the chips make a big difference in the quality of the queso experience. Some places have great queso, like Taco Deli, but serve room temp chips in a pre-sealed plastic bag. The best queso is one you can enjoy with hot, freshly fried tortilla chips. And ideally it can be enjoyed outdoors on an Austin patio with a pitcher of margaritas and a few good friends.

Honestly...it's pretty hard to screw up queso. It's just freaking delicious, no matter how it's served. But since you asked 😉 here are 7 iconic queso spots in Austin:

1. Torchy's Tacos

Queso at Torchy's Tacos

No surprise here, Torchy’s has one of the best and most iconic queso dips in Austin. With locations around the country, this Austin original is the most consistent, craveable queso around. (For real…try it once, and you’ll be craving it every time you sit down on the couch to watch Netflix…)

It’s a secret combo of melted cheese topped with guac, cotija, cilantro, and their bright orange diablo sauce. Since Torchy’s has locations all over Austin, it’s pretty easy to try this queso at any point during your weekend visit. But their South Congress flagship location is really fun because there’s a big sidewalk patio where you can rest your feet after an afternoon of shopping.

WEBSITE | 1822 S Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78704

2. Matt's el Rancho

Bob Armstrong Dip at Matt's El Rancho

Ok, this queso is probably the most famous and popular queso in the entire city of Austin. Queso snobs sometimes pretend that it’s not all that fabulous…but look around at the hundred of diners at Matt’s El Rancho, and almost every table will have an order of that famous Bob Armstrong Dip.

Wait, famous? Yep. The rumor is that former land commissioner Bob Armstrong asked restaurant owner Matt Jr. to make something special just for him, and that’s how this queso was made. It’s actually pretty well known all over the country…Bon Appetit has even featured it in their magazine

3. Magnolia Cafe

Mag Mud Queso at Magnolia Cafe

Right next to Torchy’s on South Congress is an old-school eatery called Magnolia Cafe. It’s an OG in the Austin dining scene, and everyone who’s lived in Austin for at least 10 years has tried their iconic queso, the “Mag Mud.” It’s called mud because it’s made with black beans on the bottom. Give it a stir, and that gooey, melty queso turns into a dark and delicious “mud.”

El Alma Cafe Queso

If you want a fun ambiance to enjoy your Austin queso, you need to check out the rooftop bar at El Alma on Barton Springs Rd. (Psst: it’s a great place to go after taking a summer dip in Barton Springs pool!)

Their queso is extra thick and creamy, served with hot and fresh tortilla chips. El Alma has excellent margs, too! Go during happy hour for a $6 classic marg and a $6 queso.

WEBSITE | 1025 Barton Springs Rd, Austin, TX 78704

5. Kerbey Lane Cafe

Kerbey Lane Queso

There are few things more satisfying than Kerbey Lane’s queso.. It’s always served quickly, it’s always the same at any of their locations around Austin, and it’s always a popular menu item. This is a super kid-friendly restaurant, so the Classic Queso doesn’t have a lot of frills…it’s just a standard (and delicious!) gooey, warm, cheesy yumminess. Kerbey Lane is the official queso partner of Q2 Stadium , which means you can enjoy this queso during an Austin FC match.

If you want to step up your queso game, try the Kerbey Queso, made with fresh guac and pico de gallo. (Add some chorizo, if you want.) And of course, their delicious Cowboy Queso is similar to the mad mug at Magnolia Cafe: it has black beans in it.

WEBSITE | 3704 Kerbey Ln, Austin, TX 78731

6. El Chile

El Chile Queso

There are few better restaurants in Austin for happy hour deals (it’s on our list of  best happy hours in Austin! ), but whether you’re stopping by for a happy hour or not, El Chile has some of the best queso and margaritas in Austin.

It’s a creamy queso Blanco (white queso) made with super thick-cut, freshly fried tortilla chips. They offer a discount during HH if you want to keep things low cost, or they have add-ons if you want to make this the most super-deluxe queso you’ve ever tried: add in poblanos, onions, mushrooms, chorizo, or beef fajita for an additional cost.

Polvos Queso

Polvos has a cult-like following for their amazing tacos, beef fajitas, giant breakfast tacos on homemade flour tortillas, and (of course) delicious queso appetizer. If you’re in Austin for the weekend, try to squeeze in a visit to this small, no-frills Mexican restaurant on South First St.

It’s pretty standard as far as queso goes: melted cheese + toppings. But they serve it with ALL the toppings (they’re on the side so you can add them in yourself), offer a salsa bar with lots of flavors of housemade salsa, and keep those chips coming nonstop during your meal. Polvos will probably have fun Tejano music playing with lots of basses turned up really loud and they have big and inexpensive pitchers of margaritas, and it’s just an all-around fun vibe.

Queso , aka chile con queso, is the Tex-Mex fuel that Austinites need to survive. It’s the winning combination of gooey, melted cheeses and chopped peppers, along with potential other additions like ground beef, chorizo, guacamole, or beans, all served with a side of tortilla chips.

This map of the best queso found in Austin spans from the most popular spots like Torchy’s Tacos and Kerbey Lane Cafe to classic gems like Fonda San Miguel and Magnolia Cafe to newer (in the grand scheme of things) iterations from Better Half and others.

For more like-dishes, scope out Austin’s tacos ( best and breakfast ), Tex-Mex restaurants , and cheese and wine spots .

The only austin queso guide you need.

Here's the only guide you need to the BEST queso in Austin!

I tried 50+ quesos in Austin in order to write this blog post, and I’m confident that it’s THE only guide you need to find the best queso in Austin.

Austinites are passionate about their queso. It’s not hard to fall in love with this popular appetizer: it’s made from ooey-gooey melted cheese, some peppers and tomatoes for flavors, and then any combination of chorizo, guacamole, black beans, ground beef, or other toppings to round out the dish. Queso is typically served with a side of tortilla chips, but tostadas, sweet potato chips, plantains, or other dipping devices can be used.

But hey….have a really strong opinion about a queso I left off the list? Feel free to leave a comment below!

A Guide To The Best Queso In Austin Texas

1. the very best queso in austin: torchy’s tacos.

THE guide to the best queso in Austin

Surprised? I was! I spent months trying SO many chips and queso around Austin, and Torchy’s Green  Chile Queso, this super common queso that I’ve had dozens of times, remained at the top of my list.

Here’s why: Torchy’s Tacos has mastered the art of texture + toppings. Their queso is the perfect, thick, melty consistency and it’s never too thin OR too goopy. The toppings (guacamole, cilantro, cotija cheese, and  oooh that Diablo sauce) are the right balance of salty + spicy.

The chips, granted, are nothing to call home about. But they’re good enough, and this queso is available all over Austin (and beyond!) so it’s easy to grab at a moment’s notice.

2. Queso with the best chips: El Alma

Here's the only guide you need to the BEST queso in Austin!

Holy moly, it was SO hard to find exceptional chips alongside a really good queso! Lots of places serve these flimsy, store-bought chips that break into pieces when you try to get a healthy dunk of queso. And other places made their own hot, thick, salty homemade tortillas….and then only offered them with queso fundido, but not with the dipping queso. 🙁

El Alma, though, makes these insanely delicious tostadas that are served with their  Queso Blanco y Rojo . Bonus: it’s discounted during happy hour!

3. Best loaded queso: Valentina’s Brisket Queso

Brisket Queso at Valentina's Tex Mex BBQ In Austin

Listen: if you’re gonna get queso at a barbecue joint, get that queso loaded with brisket. This is one of the most decadent, rich, delicious quesos I’ve ever tasted in Austin. It could be a full meal by itself!

Psst: Here’s another good good loaded queso to try in Austin: get the Pastrami Loaded Queso at Better Half Bar. WEBSITE here.

 4. Best drive-thru queso: Fresa’s

Queso at Fresa's in Austin Texas

I searched so hard to find a good drive-thru queso (they were all pretty pathetic,) and then an instagram follower kindly pointed out to me that I had already tried one: Fresa’s!

I typically go to the South First location, which doesn’t have a drive-thru. But Fresa’s offers their same menu at the drive-thru location on North Lamar! You can get their delicious Totally Loaded Queso (black beans, guac, chorizo, pico de gallo, queso fresco, salsa bruja) on the days when getting out of your car seems like much too big a feat.

5. Best Black Bean Queso: Mag Mud at Magnolia Cafe

Mag Mud Queso in Austin

Black beans in queso…you either love it or you hate it, but if you’re a fan and you’re looking for the KING of black bean queso, the Mag Mud at Magnolia Cafe is for you.

The black beans are placed at the bottom of the bowl, so on first inspection it looks like a regular bowl of queso. But give a nice big stir, and all of those beans get distributed into the queso and turn it into “mud.”

think that the extra protein in black bean queso makes it a little more hearty when queso ends up being all I eat for dinner. Uh…not that I’ve ever done that…

6. Best Queso Blanco: Vamanos

Here's the only guide you need to the BEST queso in Austin!

Queso blanco is made with white American cheese, so it’s a little less tangy and a little more mild. It makes a great backdrop to add  beef and peppers, which is exactly what Vamanos adds to their Ranch Style Queso Blanco.

This appetizer is discounted during happy hour, so swing by with your gal pals and load up on queso and margaritas!

7. Best Vegetarian Queso: Joann’s Fine Foods

Vegetarian Queso in Austin on South Congress

We’re not talking about vegan queso (yet), so this one is still full of dairy. But if you’re vegetarian and hunting for a fantastic, flavorful queso, please try the signature Joann’s Queso with tomatillo molcajete, soyrizo, and the most amazing, homemade, super-crunchy tostadas!

And hey…if you’re not vegetarian, you’re probably still enjoy this queso. The soyrizo is mixed throughout, and it gives a subtle salty, umami flavor that doesn’t taste like fake meat at all.

8. Best Vegan Queso: Credo Vegan Queso at Guero’s Taco Bar

Vegan Queso in Austin Texas

I tried a lot of vegan quesos in Austin, and most of them taste like super thick potato soup, or they’re loaded with tons of soy and felt rubbery. (Yuck.)

Credo Vegan Queso, though, was launched by a vegan family who couldn’t find a vegan queso that they liked, so they made their own! It’s a pretty good replica for dairy-based queso, and I like that the one they offer at Guero’s is nice and spicy!

9. Best unique queso flavor: Red Curry Coconut Queso at Velvet Taco

Here's the only guide you need to the BEST queso in Austin!

Nope, it’s not an Austin original, but Velvet Taco still serves up one of my favorite unique twists on queso: their Red Curry Coconut Queso is so good!

It’s full of curry flavor, pickled onion, queso fresco, and Thai basil, and served with with blue tortilla chips.

Also try:  The Tikka Con Queso (add lamb!) at Nasha India. Such a fun culture twist on queso!   WEBSITE

10. Best destination queso: Grizzelda’s

We all know that Grizzelda’s is one of the cutest Tex-Mex restaurants to with #allthevibes, and the queso at Grizzelda’s is a crowd favorite. Although it’s not on the happy hour menu, it’s worth making dinner reservations with a group of friends and grabbing some queso as an appetizer to enjoy with your first margarita, because this queso is  just that good .

11. Best classic Austin queso: Bob Armstrong Dip at Matt’s El Rancho

Bob Armstrong Dip at Matt's El Rancho

You have to admit that the Bob Armstrong Dip at Matt’s El Rancho is a classic. Rumor has it that Bob Armstrong was a regular at Matt’s El Rancho when it opened in the 1950s, and he once went into the kitchen and asked the chef to make him “something different.” The chef put guacamole and ground beef into the queso, and Bob Armstrong loved it and put his name on it.

Lots of other restaurants serve the same thing (and even put the “Bob Armstrong” name on it!), but it started right here at Matt’s El Rancho.

12. Best free queso: Chuy’s Nacho Car Queso

Show me a University of Texas student who hasn’t taken advantage of Chuy’s free queso at least once… Granted, this queso isn’t all that gastronomically inclined, but it’s FOR ZERO DOLLARS on weekdays from 4-7.

Show up, buy a cheap margarita, and enjoy free queso to your heart’s content. We’ve all done it at least once.

13. Best Happy Hour Queso: Chunky Layered Queso at Jack Allen’s Kitchen

Here's the only guide you need to the BEST queso in Austin!

Get this beauty for 50% off during happy hour! The “Layered Chunky Queso” is a rich dip of queso, green chile pulled pork, and guacamole. My only complaint is that the serving size is small…I want it to be twice as big, because this stuff is so good!

Here's the only guide you need to the BEST queso in Austin!

Let me conclude by saying this: it’s pretty hard to mess up queso. Even the very worst quesos I tried during this queso search were ridiculously addicting. I mean, it’s hot melted cheese served with salty fried chips! What’s not to love?

So, if I didn’t include you  very  favorite queso on this list, just know that I still love you. And I bet that queso is awesome in its own way, and it’s still worthy of your devotion.

Also, I didn’t include queso fundido in this post, although there are some mighty fine ones in Austin! That’s a completely different food group than queso + chips, and when I’m craving queso, fundido isn’t going to cut it.

Here are just a few more quesos that I happen to love in Austin:

Kerbey Lane’s Classic Queso:  I’ve noticed that ask for the best queso in Austin, about 1 in 5 people will scream, “Kerbey Lane!” It’s a solid, noteworthy queso that’s available at one of their numerous Austin locations. I’ve eaten it many times and I have zero complaints. WEBSITE

Polvos Queso:  They serve all of the toppings on the side, and you can mix in whatever looks tasty. I like the customizable feature to this queso! (I’m not a fan of raw onions in my queso, so I always leave those out.) WEBSITE

TacoDeli:  I knoooow I’m making some of you mad by not putting this at the top of the list, but I don’t think TacoDeli’s queso deserves the same amount of attention as Torchy’s. (I mean…they serve their chips in sealed plastic bags, and that’s weird.) And even though their regular queso is quite dull and lackluster, I believe the Roberto’s Brazo Fuerte Queso is worth mentioning because it’s so darn flavorful with that guacamole, pico de gallo, and HeartBrand Akaushi beef picadillo mixed in! WEBSITE

El Dorado Cafe : This is my new favorite North Austin Tex-Mex restaurant, and their queso is good! Be sure to spend the extra $1 and upgrade the regular queso to the “Supa Queso” that’s spiked with black beans, pico de gallo, and guacamole.  WEBSITE

The Best Queso in Austin: Where To Go for the Tex-Mex Treat

You can’t visit Austin and not eat queso. This dish is as beloved as Austin’s weird roots and live music obsession. The perfect blend of melted cheese and peppers, it’s a savory treat with a hint of spice. Whether you’re in town for the weekend or scoping out the latest hot spots in your home city, here’s a list of the best queso in Austin.

Your Guide To The Best Queso in Austin

best queso in Austin: queso and guac

If you’re not in the know, queso is one of Austin’s most beloved dishes. It starts out with melted cheese, peppers, and tomatoes and can be customized for even tastier flavors. Common toppings include meaty favorites like taco meat, brisket, and chorizo as well as veggies like guacamole and black beans. There are also usually tortilla chips or tostadas that you dip into the sauce. Since Austin likes to keep things weird, you’ll also find places that serve sweet potato chips and naan or you can slop the queso over enchiladas and migas tacos. Here’s where you can get the best queso in Austin.

1. Classic Queso from Kerbey Lane Cafe

No list of the best queso in Austin is complete without mentioning Kerbey Lane Cafe . This hotpsot serves up some of the tastiest queso in town. Their recipe is so good, they sent it up to the moon on the SpaceX Falcon rocket so that extraterrestrials can enjoy the out-of-this-world treat — and that’s no joke. The classic Kerbey Queso uses organic milk, American cheese and veggies like tomatoes, jalapenos, and cilantro for a delicious treat. Upgrade to the Cowboy Queso, which has black beans, or try their Vegan Queso made with cashews.

2. Queso Blanco y Rojo at El Alma

Located at 1025 Barton Springs Rd, El Alma is famous for its Queso Blanco y Rojo. It’s made with rajas — roasted poblano chiles — spicy queso, mushrooms, onions, and salsa. Enjoy it with their incredible homemade corn tostadas and pair it with one of their craft margaritas. They also serve up other tasty appetizers like queso fundido and an incredible guacamole al chipotle. Don’t miss their renowned brunch — it’s one of the best spots to wrap up an eventful weekend.

3. All the Queso at Magnolia Cafe

Magnolia Cafe is an Austin staple. Serving the city that likes to keep things weird for more than 40 years, this cafe offers several types of queso. Try the Mag Queso featuring avocado and pico de gallo or opt for the Mag Mud Queso, which also has black beans. They also have a Sonoira Queso with all the fixings of a Mag Queso and the addition of slow-roasted beef. Best of all, it’s located on South Congress Ave so you can dive into queso here and then head out to the best happy hour spots in Austin to start the night off right.

4. Spicy White Queso from De Nada Cantina

De Nada Cantina is a cozy little taco shop where you can get some of the tastiest breakfast tacos in Austin and queso that will knock your socks off. The spicy white queso is served with tortilla chips and the local vibe will have you feeling like you found a hidden treasure.

5. Green Chile Queso at Torchy’s Tacos

Torchy’s Tacos hits a homerun with their Green Chile Queso. It’s the perfect consistency of thick melty cheese topped with guac, cilantro, cotija, and Diablo hot sauce. Their chips aren’t as good as Alma’s, but the queso is the star of the show here anyway. With several locations across Austin and the nation, it’s easy to stop in and snag some of the best queso in town.

6. Brisket Queso at Valentina’s Tex-Mex BBQ

Valentina’s combines incredible Texan BBQ with Mexican influences for delicious food from the best BBQ in Austin to insane brisket . In fact, their Brisket Queso is one of our all-time favorites. Their classic white queso is loaded with juicy brisket or beef picadillo — taco meat with tomato sauces and veggies — and topped with tomato serrano salsa and tomatillo habanero salsa.

7. Bob Armstong Dip at Matt’s El Rancho

Matt’s El Rancho is one of the best Austin restaurants . The Bob Armstrong Dip has ground beef and guacamole and was rumored to be made specially for Bob Armstrong back in the 1950s. Today, this queso keeps patrons coming back for more thanks to its classic flavors and perfectly melted cheese consistency.

8. Custom Queso at Polvo’s

Polvo’s has two locations, one in South Austin and one in the downtown area. Their queso starts off as a classic dip but can be customized to meet any taste cravings. Add in steak and avocado or veggies to create a truly unique queso experience every time. All the extras come on the side so you can add the ingredients you want.

9. Supa Queso at El Dorado Cafe

El Dorado Cafe is a delicious Mexican restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as bar fare. Try their classic house queso or upgrade to the Supa Queso with black beans, guacamole, and pico de gallo.

10. Roberto’s Brazo Fuerte Queso at Tacodeli

Pair your breakfast tacos with melty queso at Tacodeli . Roberto’s Queso features guac, pico de gallo, and Akaushi beef picadillo for a salty and savory treat you won’t soon forget.

11. Free Queso at Chuy’s

Yup, you read that right — free queso! Popular Among the University of Texas at Austin students, Chuy’s Nacho Car serves up free queso on weekdays from 4 to 7 pm. Just buy a margarita or another tasty drink and enjoy the free happy hour queso. It’s not mind-blowingly good, but it’s free and tasty.

12. Unique Flavors at Nasha India

Nasha India adds its own spin to the Tex-Mex craze with their Tikka con Queso. This dish blends tikka masala sauce and cheese. Dip into the queso with a piece of NaaN bread and liven up the tasty delight by adding kheema — ground beef with Indian spices and peas.

Austin, Texas is home to the live music capital of the world, but also some pretty good queso . Growing up in Austin has made me somewhat of a queso snob, and I'm always on the hunt for good queso. So here is my best attempt at listing some of the best queso places in Austin based on 21 years of experience.

Disclaimer it was too hard to rank these queso hotspots, so they are in no particular order.

1. Torchy's Tacos

A photo posted by Steven Aka PANDA (@panda.eats.austin) on Oct 7, 2016 at 11:18am PDT

Torchy's saying is "Damn Good Tacos," but it also has damn good queso. Their queso is so loaded and thick that you feel like the chip might break with every scoop, but in the best way. Their queso is also kinda spicy, and it has a nice kick of flavor with every bite. Overall? Delicious.

2. Matt's El Rancho

A photo posted by Infatuation Austin (@infatuation_atx) on Sep 6, 2016 at 4:00pm PDT

When you go to Matt's El Rancho  make sure that you get a large Bob queso. This queso is named after Bob Armstrong, the former Texas Land Commissioner, who raved about this dip so much since Matt's first opened that they started calling it the Bob dip. A Bob queso is their regular queso heaped with fresh guacamole and taco meat.

3. Magnolia Cafe

A photo posted by Priscilla Arasaki (@parasaki) on Aug 9, 2016 at 12:49pm PDT

Magnolia Cafe , better known to locals as "Mags," is known for its 24-hour service and its queso. Their regular queso is something to talk about, but the real gem is their "mag mud." Mag mud is queso, black beans, avocado, and pico de gallo. They have many other options for queso, but mag mud is for sure a top contender.

4. Muadie's

A photo posted by @eatingaustin on Oct 26, 2014 at 11:16am PDT

Maudie's has several locations in Austin, making it easy to get their queso. Maudie's queso, a feel good kind of queso, makes it hard to slow your roll once you have started eating it. Every time I go there I find myself taking the last of the chips to clean the bowl of queso. It is your classic true yellow queso.

5. Taco Deli

A photo posted by @eatingaustin on Oct 18, 2014 at 12:04pm PDT

Taco Deli's queso is a less thick, but just as good. Their queso is a good, smooth white queso. You can taste all of the seasonings that are put into this queso with every bite.

6. Kerbey Lane Cafe

Kerbey is known for its great breakfast options, but have you ever had queso for breakfast? I recommend their queso at all times of the day.

7. Mi Madre's

A photo posted by Elizabeth Sandlin (@donut_taco_to_us) on Mar 16, 2016 at 11:54am PDT

Mi Madre's is probably one of Austin's best kept secrets. This place has a thinner queso that is best without guacamole, yet still packs some spiciness to it.

Austin has some dank queso places that you need to try pronto. I'm sure there are many queso places out there that I need to try, so if your favorite queso place isn't on here, that just means I haven't gotten to try it yet!

The Best Queso in Austin

Eva Rogers

Austin is known for its incredible Tex-Mex, and the best part of Tex-Mex is queso. Queso is a favorite food for many who seek it when choosing a restaurant. We’ve already given our thoughts on the best Tex-Mex in the DFW area , but Austin being a hub for Tex-Mex restaurants and experiential food has some of the best queso in the country. Nothing is better than a salty tortilla chip with melted to perfection queso.

Kerbey Lane Cafe

Kerbey Lane has been in Austin since 1980 serving comfort food, and chips and queso are the ultimate comfort food. This restaurant is a veteran in the queso game, which is apparent when tasting their perfectly crafted queso. Their queso is an Austin classic, topped with guacamole and pico de gallo. If you also want to go full Texan, try the cowboy queso, their offering mixed with black beans.

Torchy’s Tacos

Torchy’s Tacos , another Austin classic, is impeccable when it comes to chips and queso. The restaurant prides itself on keeping its soul and culture from its humble beginnings, even as the restaurant now has about 75 locations. Torchy’s Tacos offers a green chile queso, topped with guacamole, cotija cheese, cilantro, and diablo sauce, and hillbilly queso, which is the green chile queso upgraded with chorizo.

El Alma has one of the most unique quesos in Austin. Their Blanco y Rojo is a fan favorite, as it features white cheese with a red salsa. They also top their queso with pepper strips, onions and mushrooms. To top it all off, the exquisite cheese is served with fried tostadas. If you are looking for ultramodern queso, this is definitely the place to go.

Matt’s El Rancho

This Tex-Mex joint is famous for its queso. Matt’s El Rancho serves a Bob Armstrong dip which Female Foodie calls “the queso of all quesos”. Bob Armstrong, who was a Texas land commissioner, cleverly thought to transform queso for the restaurant. This dip includes queso mixed with onions, tomatoes and peppers, homemade guacamole, and sauteed ground beef. This combination brings a mix of extravagant flavors to a once simple queso.

The first ever Chuy’s was established on Barton Springs Rd in Austin. Chuy’s is known for its authenticity and soul. With this in mind, the restaurant offers two traditional quesos: a chile con queso, green chile and ranchero sauces, and the queso compuesto, with ground sirloin, guacamole and pico de gallo.

Maudie’s Cafe

Maudie’s has seven locations in Austin, but the traditional Maudie’s Cafe is on West 7th Street. The cafe started in 1954, but turned from a homestyle to Tex-Mex restaurant in 1993. With this history, Maudie’s serves a queso that recognizes tradition within the taste. The cafe offers a chile con queso and a diablo sol food, which is chile con queso mixed with taco beef and pico de gallo.

Try These 6 Quesos to Become a Real Austinite

February 26, 2016 by Jessica Pino 9 Comments

Torchy's Tacos Queso

Among the best queso in Austin at Torchy’s Tacos (Credit: Zach Copley via Flickr CC)

Almost as sacred as the mighty breakfast taco, queso is Austin’s liquid gold.

But not all queso is created equally. Some comes plain, some with garnish and some “cowboy style.” But one thing’s for sure. This ooey-gooey goodness has been perfected in our capital city.

While I do have an opinion on who reigns the queso kingdom in Austin, I’ve decided to simply share with you the top six quesos every person must try in order to be considered an Austinite. You can decide for yourself which one is the best.

#1 Torchy’s Tacos

Torchy's Tacos Trailer

On your quest for queso, Torchy’s Tacos will probably be the easiest for you to sample since it’s a popular local chain. They have four locations in the 78704 alone. The latest recently opened on South Congress at the former Fran’s Hamburgers location.

This queso is rich and comes with a touch of guacamole, queso fresco, fresh cilantro and a drizzle of diablo sauce. Before eating, be sure to mix it all together to blend the flavors. The diablo sauce is what gives it an orange hue and adds a little kick, but not enough to leave you reaching for your water glass.

Okay, fine. It’s my favorite queso in Austin. But while I do love me some Torchy’s, their queso can be inconsistent from location to location. The texture can vary from rich and creamy to a little runny, but overall the taste has a perfect mix of flavors.

See locations – Website

#2 Kerbey Lane Cafe

Kerbey Lane Cafe Queso

Kerbey Lane queso

Kerbey Lane Cafe has six locations in Austin and has been around for 35 years . As you can imagine, they are not newbies in the queso world. The Kerbey Queso is creamy, white and comes with pico de gallo and guacamole. There’s a pretty large amount of guacamole, so I don’t recommend stirring it together like I would at Torchy’s. Instead, scoop equal parts onto a chip.

The flavor is quite mild and doesn’t have a lot of spice, but this queso recipe has been perfected. You can even ask for “cowboy style,” which comes with black beans.

#3 Tacodeli

Queso from Tacodeli

Another local taco powerhouse with five locations in Austin and one in Dallas, Tacodeli has probably the most straightforward queso of the bunch. It’s light, creamy and on the runny side.

And that’s it. No muss, fuss or spice.

But with their award-winning spicy salsas as a counterpart, you can’t blame Tacodeli for keeping their queso mild. I really appreciate the simplicity because it complements any item on the menu.

#4 Trudy’s

Need an excuse to order the queso especial? How about the sun rose this morning. A post shared by Trudy's Tex-Mex (@trudystexmex) on Jul 15, 2014 at 10:02am PDT

Trudy’s has been a local icon since 1977 and there are now four locations around Austin, plus South Congress Cafe which is owned by the same restaurant group.

There are two queso options at Trudy’s for indecisive eaters: the traditional chili con queso and a the queso especial. Chili con queso is their original recipe, with loads of peppers and the option to add beef or chicken. Queso especial takes the traditional queso recipe and adds guacamole and spicy pico, making a colorful bowl of golden goodness.

#5 Magnolia Cafe

Mag Mud at Magnolia Cafe

Another Austin icon, Magnolia Cafe , originally began as The Omelettry West in 1979. There is actually a fascinating history you can read about on this  website  about how Magnolia Cafe came to be, which some might compare to the Fran’s and Dan’s story. Long story short, as of 1988, Magnolia Cafe had two locations and became a 24/7 diner.

What I love about Magnolia is there are so many versions of queso you can get! Their basic Mag Queso comes with queso, avocado and pico. However, they are most famous for their Mag Mud, which adds black beans to their Mag Queso, similar to the Cowboy Queso at Kerbey Lane. You’ll definitely want to scoop this queso out with a spoon for fear of losing a chip. They also have a lesser known Sonora Queso, which adds spiced ground beef to the Mag Queso and is ideal for the meat eaters of Austin.

Queso Blanco y Rojo at El Alma

Queso Blanco y Rojo at El Alma

The most unique of all the quesos on this list, El Alma’s Queso Blanco y Rojo is features white cheese with a red salsa. It’s then topped with onions, mushrooms and rajas (sliced poblano peppers.) And to make it even more unique, it’s served with fried tostadas (flour chips).

Queso Blaco y Rojo is not overwhelmingly spicy and I feel sophisticated every time I eat it. Perhaps it’s the ambiance, since El Alma has an amazing outdoor patio overlooking Butler Park and downtown. A great place for date night.

This looks more like a list of Austin hipsters’ favourite places for queso. Torchy’s & Kerbey are both good, but as a native Austinite I can tell you there is much better queso to be found throughout the city. El Caribe on N. Lamar, for starters.

Guero’s has the best queso flameado (with al carbon steak or chorizo, not bacon) this side of La Fogata.

Former Texas star Peyton Stearns is a work in progress, bows out of the ATX Open | Bohls

queso tour austin tx

  • Forner NCAA tennis singles champion Peyton Stearns is just dumbfounded by first-round exit from ATX Open pro tournament.
  • The 61st player in the world has had some high moments but lots of lows in 2024 and can't really explain them.
  • Longhorn tennis coach Howard Joffe sees a bright star in former player and thinks she can reach top 20 in the world.

Peyton Stearns didn’t need to say it.

Her face and body language said it all.

And so did the scoreboard at Westwood Country Club that said the former Texas Longhorns great had fallen in the ATX Open 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 to unseeded Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in three sets Tuesday night.

In the first round, no less.

So, the question was asked of the former NCAA women’s singles tennis champion: was she more mad or disappointed about losing in her adopted hometown on the opening night of the singles draw?

“There’s a lot of emotions,” said a clearly distraught Stearns, who is ranked 61st in the world. “But when you lose a lot lately, it’s just another loss.”

Which is almost unquestionably a lie.

Not because the 22-year-old from Cincinnati was fibbing, but because she cares too much. This charismatic phenom never watched much tennis growing up in Ohio. She was always outside playing and has always described herself as a perfectionist.

As such, she may have wanted this win too badly and played uptight at times. Six of her last seven losses have come in three sets.

More: Austin FC lacks offensive punch, defensive prowess, spark ... well, everything | Bohls

“Sometimes, it’s not so easy to play at home,” said the 29-year-old Schmiedlova, who has won three WTA titles and reached the quarterfinals of the French Open last year before losing to Coco Gauff. “A player sometimes feels more pressure.”

Schmiedlova probably surprised herself a little bit. She’d never set foot in Austin before, had never played Stearns and was unaccustomed to this hard court as one who prefers clay. But after sampling downtown Austin with her father and practicing for four days here, she’s very mentally equipped and was more than content with her service and return games.

So, does she think she can win this tournament even though the last of her three WTA titles came in Bogota in 2018?

“Oh, I don’t know,” she said after a workout on a stationary bike following her grueling, 2½-hour match with Stearns. “I’m just happy with this win. We’ll see.”

ATX Open field is wide open, talented throughout

First things first. Her next match Thursday comes against unseeded American qualifier Sachia Vickery, whom she knows a little bit about.

“Yeah, I lost to her last week in Mexico,” she said with a chuckle. “In straight sets.”

More: Texas baseball is winning, but these next five games will be a serious early test | Golden

Yeah, the strength of this field is such that no one’s looking ahead very far.

Except for No. 3 and reigning U.S. Open champ Gauff, No. 5 Jessica Pegula and the injured Madison Keys, all the other top Americans are here. Stearns’ stay unfortunately was brief, save for her ongoing doubles pairing with new partner Sloane Stephens. Five of the seven Americans won their opening matches.

"I think American tennis is looking amazing," said television commentator Rennae Stubbs, who was a sensational doubles player on the WTA for 22 years. "But four different players won the four Grand Slams last year. Coco and Jessica Pegula are top five in the world. Madison's got to some quarterfinals in Grand Slams. Sloane is certainly a player who should have won a lot more. She's that good. And Coco will inspire even more Americans to do well."

Stearns among them.

“The depth of the women’s tour has really grown,” Stearns said. “And having a women’s pro event in Austin is just amazing.”

Texas' tennis coach: Stearns may be ahead of schedule

There’s little doubt that Stearns wanted to give back to a supportive crowd who showed up on this calm, cloudy evening. And the crowd wanted her to stick around, too.

“To have the local favorite go out in the first round always has some effect,” said tournament director Christo van Rensburg, the South African pro who was a doubles whiz and once beat Pete Sampras in straight sets at Wimbledon. “But we have such a strong field this year. We’ve got Anna Danilina, who won in the U.S. Open mixed doubles last year and Shuai Zhang, who was ranked No. 2 in the world in doubles last year.”

More: Texas basketball holds on for emotional win over Texas Tech

But it’s difficult for anyone to figure out how to consistently navigate the wide-open tennis tournaments world-wide, now that Serena Williams has left the stage.

This year’s ATX Open offers a much stronger field than last year with strong players like Stephens and two-time NCAA singles champion Danielle Collins, who made it to the ATX semifinals last year, as well as top-seeded Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine, who has been as high as 25th in the world and now is 35th.

But Stearns will figure it out.

So, does she ever think she might need a sports psychologist to get her back on track?

“I should,” she said.

The second-best match of the day might have involved the popular and perfectly named wild card Katie Volynets, who delighted the crowd with one 30-shot rally after another with Mexico’s powerful Renata Zarazua. When Volynets wasn’t spending part of her time in Austin as a passenger on the COTA track whizzing about the course at 180-mph, she was a rabbit on the Westwood court, running down one shot after another for a 6-4, 7-6 win.

“The women’s professional tennis tour is just brutal,” said Longhorns women’s coach Howard Joffe, Stearns’ former coach. “It’s almost laughable because it’s such a pressure cooker of stress. It’s set up just too hard for some mortals.”

He thinks it’s just a matter of time until the young woman everyone calls “P” breaks out for good.

“She’s done very well and is maybe ahead of schedule,” Joffe said. “When Roger Federer came up, he beat Sampras at Wimbledon, then had a sophomore slump and lost a ton of first rounds. Peyton is not the new kid on the block anymore, but her game and skill set are such that she could easily be a top-20 player.”

It’s just getting through the rough patches.

Working on her game, Peyton Stearns forges ahead

Few would argue that women tennis players don't have more demands than the male pros do. Heck, 10 moms are pursuing their careers on tour, including three in this ATX field. Of the trio, Taylor Townsend won a three-setter Tuesday, and Anastasija Sevastova won in two, but Belgian mom Yanina Wickmayer fell in a three-hour match.

"They say pro tennis is like legal addiction," Stubbs said. "Your highs are amazing. The lows are really difficult to deal with. Peyton's a very good player. She's not a kid. But there are so many great players. They all have some down times, and it's a major learning experience."

The frustration of losing is clearly getting to Stearns early in her career despite some success.

So, what went wrong?

Was it more a mental hangup or something technique-wise that has her trending downward with a 1-6 singles record this year after some impressive tennis that included a Round-of-16 performance at the U.S. Open and a third-round run at the French Open?

To her credit, Stearns wasn’t trying to hide the dejection from getting broken in her final two service games and blowing a comfortable 5-3 lead in the final set before a packed house of more than 1,000 at Center Court. And she had the maturity to take tough questions from the media.

She was just simply lost. And hurt. And confused.

And given how public she was in her self-critical comments, it’s clear the frustration of the defeat was definitely weighing heavily on arguably the best women’s tennis player in Texas school history. Not that the fiery blonde who led the Longhorns to back-to-back national championships gave in.

She’s way too much of a warrior to ever do that.

“I think Peyton is uniquely suited to do well in this type of environment,” Joffe said. “She has a little bit of Teflon exterior with respect to stuff other people get affected by.”

The freshness of this defeat was just too raw.

After dropping the first set 6-2, Stearns came storming back, rooted on by the home crowd. She’d been rushing her shots and spraying even her normally reliable forehand all over the hard court. Meanwhile, the 29-year-old Slovakian was steady as ever and keeping relentless pressure on this transplanted Texan.

But Stearns stuck it out, breaking Schmiedlova twice to win the second set 6-4 and leading 5-3 by losing only three points on serve in her first four service games.

She just couldn’t close.

“Yeah, I think I blew the lead,” she said, “where better players would have capitalized on that.”

Stearns figures to be one of those better players in short order. But it can be difficult to get out of a rut sometimes.

And what exactly does she feel she needs to improve the most?

“I would say my brain,” she said. “I can be a little smarter out there. Maybe I should go back to school.”

Through Sunday, Westwood Country Club
