History buffs and architecture aficionados alike will appreciate a stop at the Wisconsin state Capitol. Constructed between 1906 and 1917, the building is an iconic fixture in the Madison skyline. Among the architectural highlights are the council chambers, which were modeled after Venice 's Doge's Palace , as well as the governor's conference room, which is decorated with 26 historical and allegorical paintings by Hugo Ballin. Other chambers within the building feature French and Italian marble, skylights and murals. If you can only admire the capitol from the outside, pay attention to the dome, which rises more than 200 feet and features a bronze Daniel Chester French statue (French is best known for designing the Lincoln Memorial ). During the summer months, be sure to stop by the sixth-floor museum and observation deck.

Past visitors described the building as "beautiful" and recommended taking a guided tour for the best experience.

You'll find the Capitol building in downtown Madison. From the UW Madison campus, simply walk down State Street toward the building. Entrance is free. The Capitol is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and weekends and holidays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free guided tours are offered Monday through Saturday at 9, 10 and 11 a.m., as well as 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Tours on Sundays are available at 1, 2 and 3 p.m., and an additional 4 p.m. tour is available Monday through Friday. #1 University of Wisconsin – Madison Memorial Union

One of the star attractions of the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, the Memorial Union is beloved by students and locals alike. Open since Oct. 5, 1928, and perched on the shores of Lake Mendota, the union is perhaps best known for its terrace, which faces the lake and is filled with colorful sunburst chairs and tables perfect for enjoying the view, a brat and a pitcher of beer. When the terrace closes for the season (typically in late September), retreat inside to Der Rathskeller. With its German beer hall vibe and cozy fireplaces, Der Rathskeller is a popular spot to watch Badger games. There's also a stage for open mic nights and plenty of seating. Other Union attractions include rotating art exhibits and galleries, an ice cream shop, multiple eateries and a store selling grab-and-go items, along with Badger apparel and gifts.

Past visitors raved about the union, specifically the terrace, with a few calling it among the top spots for Madison travelers to visit. According to reviewers, the best time to visit is in summer, when the weather is just right for enjoying the building's lakefront perch. Just remember: This is a popular spot, so you may have to wait for one of the coveted terrace tables if you're here during the busy evening hours.

Tour of the Madison Capital

Free 45-minute tour of the Capital which is an impressive and beautiful building with a lot of history. Interesting information provided on the tour.

Was nice to walk around the Capital square Saturday they have open Farmers Market good vegatables and baked goods as well

Huge impressive government building with an immense dome, lots of interior art and important statues for the people of WI. The observation deck was nice to get up there and see the city and the two lakes. Did I say it was free and air conditioned to get out of the summer heat? If this was helpful, give me a vote please.

This is an extraordinary structure. The tour does not cost anything and the tour guide was so informative. We enjoyed this adventure.

What a beautiful building. Access is free and the capitol is definitely a worthwhile destination while in Madison. Love it.

I hopped a Van Galder bus from Rockford and went up to explore one of my favorite smaller cities. The capital is perfect for a walking tour. I went in and joined a free tour. Awesome photo opportunities. Everything you want and need is walking distance. I went mid winter -2 outdoors and it was perfect. This is a must visit in the Midwest.

Essential Downtown Madison: Visiting the Capital City with Children

  • By Rebecca Reitz
  • August 10, 2022

downtown madison capital building

Downtown Madison is not only home to the state’s Capitol building, governing bodies, and the world-class University of Wisconsin-Madison, but it is truly a Wisconsin destination unlike any other. The downtown Madison isthmus, a small strip of land nestled between Lakes Mendota and Monona , is home to various crowd-pleasing sights, one-of-a-kind restaurants, and unique local events that have put Madison on the map for many a Wisconsin traveler.

Feeling overwhelmed by the idea of parading around metro Madison with children? Fear not—we’ve done the leg work for you! This guide narrows it down to the top destinations for families with children so that you can maximize your visit to the Capital City. We’ll start with must-see spots at the heart of downtown in Madison’s Capitol Square and then move westward toward the Henry Vilas Zoo on Madison’s near-west side.

Parking Downtown

Before we jump in, one more practical note: parking can be a real headache in downtown Madison. Several parking ramps are available, but they can be closed periodically for downtown and campus events, not to mention the maze of one-way streets. Consider hopping on one of the many Madison Metro city bus routes further out of the heart of downtown and simply using your foot power to get around the Isthmus. Be sure to bring a stroller, layers (it tends to be windier/cooler downtown with the lakes), and cash, especially for the special events around the square. There are also options to rent bicycles and e-bicycles throughout downtown.

The Wisconsin State Capital

Wisconsin’s State Capitol building , re-built in 1917, sits at the epicenter of Madison’s downtown Isthmus area. A walk through this spectacularly mammoth structure with floor-to-ceiling marble and a 184 ft dome is sure to make a lasting impression on any curious youngster. Capitol tours are available on both weekdays and weekends for groups of under 10 without prior reservation.

Visiting the Capitol during the holiday season is a special treat. Each year a gigantic evergreen Christmas tree is harvested from a Wisconsin farm and becomes the focal point of the Capitol rotunda. Traditionally, the tree is decorated with ornaments crafted by school children from throughout the state.

Another noteworthy holiday event is the TubaChristmas Concert held annually in the rotunda. This free concert highlights a volunteer band of tuba, sousaphone, euphonium, and baritone musicians whose bold and echoey renditions of Christmas favorites reverberate throughout the building for an unparalleled musical and sensory experience. Those with auditory sensitivities may want to pack a pair of headphones for a more controlled and calm experience.

The Dane County Farmers Market, Saturday Market on the Square

The Capitol Square, which immediately surrounds the State Capitol building, is home to many lively events throughout the more seasonable months. Most notably, the Dane County Farmers’ Market, Saturday Market on the Square which is the country’s largest producer-only farm market. This Madison favorite runs every Saturday morning from April to November and moves indoors to the Monona Terrace during the winter months. Squeaky fresh cheese curds, Stella’s Bakery’s hot and spicy cheese bread, and a variety of seasonal vegetables, local honey, organic meats, vibrant flowers, and a plethora of other treats and treasures are available to buy. You’ll likely want to have cash on hand for ease of purchasing, but many stands do accept plastic too.

Saturday Market on the Square At-A-Glance:

  • Hours: Saturdays April through November 6:15 am – 1:45 pm
  • Admission: FREE
  • Bring: Cash, although many vendors accept cards, too. They also accept FoodShare/EBT.

Concerts on the Square

Another favorite Capitol Square activity is the Concerts on the Square . The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra holds these weekly concerts on Wednesday evenings at 7 pm throughout the summer. Grab a picnic dinner (or purchase one from one of the many street vendors surrounding the Square) and join the crowd of nearly 5,000 others for a relaxing evening of enchanting music on the Capitol lawn.

The Madison Art Fair on the Square

Another big-ticket event, The Madison Art Fair on the Square, is one of the Midwest’s most highly regarded outdoor art, music, and food festivals, and it attracts upwards of 200,000 to the Capitol Square each summer. This Madison Museum of Contemporary Art event is traditionally held on the second weekend in July. The festival features photographs, prints, jewelry, paintings, and other beautifully handmade goods fashioned by nearly 500 artists.

Art Fair on the Square At-A-Glance:

  • Date: Usually held on the second weekend in July; TBD for 2023.
  • Hours: Saturday 9 am – 6pm & Sunday 10 am – 5 pm
  • mmoca.org/event/art-fair-on-the-square/

Taste of Madison

One last essential visit to the Square is the annual Taste of Madison , which attracts around 250,000 participants each Labor Day weekend. Enjoy the culinary specialties of nearly 80 restaurants and 20+ beverage vendors amidst the beats from three live music stages. All of the restaurants keep their profits from food sales, but beverage sales are what help to keep the event admission free. Plus, the non-profit groups that help vend the beverages get to keep all of the tips for their charitable organizations! Who has the best taste in Madison? That’s up for debate, but if you stop by the Old Fashioned’s stand to sample their award-winning deep-fried Wisconsin cheese curds, we know you won’t be disappointed.

Taste of Madison At-A-Glance:

  • Date: Saturday, September 3 – Sunday, September 4, 2022
  • Hours: Saturday 2:30 pm – 8:30 pm & Sunday 11 am – 7 pm

If you visit in warm weather, you’ll want to hit up The Daily Scoop for a taste of the campus’s very own ice cream.

Henry Vilas Zoo

As you head just west of the UW-Madison Campus, you’ll find the Henry Vilas Zoo, one of Madison’s finest gems for families! This is one of the few admission-free zoos available in the country, and their operations rely on donations from the local community and beyond. The Henry Vilas Zoo is open daily, and they even have limited hours on major holidays throughout the year.

The zoo offers many animal exhibits and habitats, from buffalo in the North American Prairie exhibit, to African lions and Amur tigers in the Big Cat exhibit, to grizzlies and polar bears in the newer Arctic Passage exhibit, and much, much more!

Pro tip: visit the zoo around lunchtime! Many of the animals are up and active, hungrily awaiting their lunches. Stop by the Artic Passage exhibit for a special treat of watching the polar bear swim while waiting for a mealtime.

Speaking of grub, if you’re hungry, there are three great options for you while at the zoo: you can pack in a picnic lunch to enjoy inside the zoo or in the surrounding Vilas Park , stop by the zoo’s very own Glacier Grille, or check out ZuZu Cafe located directly across the street from the zoo. This is a great stop to grab some delicious Mediterranean or American fare in a family-friendly cafe that offers both indoor and outdoor seating options.

Need to change it up a little? Stop by the Conservation Carousel in the Children’s Zoo for a $3 spin. The carousel runs 10 am – 4 pm daily from April to October. Be sure to plan some time to play at the giant treehouse playground just across from the carousel for an extra opportunity to burn some steam. A charming electric Zoo Train is also a favorite attraction for youngsters.

Lost Souls of State Street

madison ghost walk, what to expect.

Pete the Projectionist is what they used to nickname the ghost in the back cinema of State Street’s Orpheum Theatre. He seemed harmless enough, just hiding film reels and knocking over small items. That was until he screamed in the ear and threw a stack of plates at the overnight cleaner who ran out of the building without looking back.

Built in 1926 at the extraordinarily expensive cost at the time of seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars, the Orpheum Theatre of Madison originally featured both vaudeville shows as well as films. Old theaters are usually rife with stories of hauntings and ghosts and with so many people that pass through the those buildings, and the amount of blood, sweat, and tears that goes into making a production happen, it’s often a theater where those who we thought have passed on seem to leave a psychic mark on the world,

Service animals are welcome. However, for liability issues, please leave your furry friends at home if you don’t require their assistance.

Is this ghost tour kid-appropriate?

While our tours do not contain anything too graphic or inappropriate, we find that kids that enjoy history have the best time. You know your children and that's left up to you. We do not recommend bringing children in strollers because sometimes that can be difficult with larger walking groups.

What if I'm late or cannot find my guide?

We do our best to answer calls and emails as promptly as they are received. Please make sure to leave a voicemail with the city and tourtime.  We try to accommodate travel and weather issues, but our public tours cannot wait for more than 10 minutes. Reschedules are available if the date you are interested in is not sold out.

What is your cancellation policy?

Discover the history of Madison, Wisconsin with our ghost walk around the state’s capitol.

Colorful characters, vengeful spirits, monsters, and more!

We’ve spent a lot of time researching supernatural and weird stories around Mad City so that we have brand new stories and content that we can guarantee you’ve never heard before.

Real ghost stories, paranormal experiences, urban legends, and much more!

The Capitol Tour meets across the street from the Great Dane Brewpub downtown at the corner of King Street and South Webster.

What to expect? Haunted history tours are not like Halloween haunted houses. No rent-a-ghouls have been hired to jump out and startle you. However, if you’re captivated by local folklore, into Wisconsin legend tripping, a student of Madison history, or just interested in sparking your imagination with strange tales about Madison, this tour is for you.

Distance: 1.5 miles

Tomorrow X Together Announce 2024 U.S. Tour

By Charisma Madarang

Charisma Madarang

K-pop band Tomorrow X Together announced on Tuesday that they’ll be embarking on the U.S. leg of their Act: Promise tour this spring.

The trek, which launches in South Korea’s capital, Seoul, on May 3, promises to be “grander” than its 2023 predecessor Act: Sweet Mirage . The U.S. portion of their world tour kicks off May 14 in Tacoma, Washington, and features 11 total shows across eight cities including Oakland, Los Angeles, Houston, and New York.

According to a press release, Act: Promise “embodies the commitment to move forward together towards a hopeful future.” The concert is billed as an example of a “cohesive narrative, seamlessly weaving together captivating music, performances, VCRs, and set designs.”

Tickets for the tour will go on sale to the general public on March 24 via Ticketmaster.
