  • Trivia During the filming of the sports cars item, some British paparazzi turned up and tried to spy on the plucky hosts going about their business. Unfortunately for these photographers, they got stopped by the police, had to admit they didn't have permits to work in Morocco and were marched back to the airport. Ooops.
  • Goofs The image of the "Dutch" bicycle police officers is actually a heavily-manipulated photograph of Norwegian officers. The original image - taken in Oslo in 2010 - was changed to make the officers appear more physically impressive, and the Norwegian badges were edited out of the version used in the episode.

In this episode, the tent is located in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond and James May go to Morocco to test the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, the Mazda MX5 and the Zenos E10. And later in the episode, Hammond and May play a real life game of Battleships but with cars.

They discuss how the Dutch are the tallest people on Earth and how they’re not allowed to use the word ‘swaffling’.

Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, the Mazda MX5 and the Zenos E10 Tested

the trio take the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, the Mazda MX5 and the Zenos E10 to Morocco for a comparison test. Clarkson loves the 4C but is plagued by leg cramp so has to pull over. He later wants to compare the Alfa’s weight to the other two cars to prove that it’s better so they set off producing a large set of scales.

After the movement of lots of animals, the scales eventually break and they are told to leave due to the number of animal carcasses.

They later stop to perform timed laps around Atlas Corporation Studios in Ouarzazate. Hammond crashes his MX5 but it’s not highly damaged, and they determine that the MX5 is the fastest.

Conversation Street

In this episode they discuss police cars and which nation has the worst. James May thinks it’s the British. In Holland, where the tent was, used to have Porsches.

After this, they then discuss a bridge made for squirrels, which cost 150,000 euros. Only five squirrels used it over two years.

They finish with a discussion on how Clarkson has to race a train when he sees one, and when he doesn’t do that any more, he should die.

Battleships

Hammond and James use cars to play a real life version of Battleships with cars as ships and multiple G Whiz as missiles.

Celebrity Brain Crash

Golden Earring are about to play a live set outside the tents but are electrocuted before they can properly start. Instead, Clarkson uses a V8 engine to blow up a blow-up doll.

Episode Guide

The tent is at the Port of Rotterdam. To settle an argument over the best sports car, the presenters go to Marrakech, Morocco to compare the Mazda MX-5, the Zenos E10S and the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider.

During the road trip Clarkson suddenly pulls over due to a leg cramp while driving the 4C. Later, he challenges Hammond and May to weigh their cars to prove that the 4C is lighter, using an improvised scale and animal carcasses as counterweight. The scale breaks just as Hammond is about to remove the MX-5 from it, and the crew are ordered to leave the premises due to their use of animal carcasses.

Clarkson and the film crew leave Hammond and May to focus on the 4C. The presenters stop at Atlas Corporation Studios in Ouarzazate to perform timed laps with their cars. Hammond wins, despite crashing into an Egyptian statue prop.

Also in the episode, Hammond and May play an explosive game of Battleships using old cars as the “ships” and several G-Wizes as “missiles”.

Dutch band Golden Earring perform live outside the tent, but are electrocuted on stage. To fill in the time, Clarkson uses a V-8 engine to inflate a blow-up doll.

0:01:41 – The Dutch really are the tallest nation on earth. A study published in the journal eLife found that the average Dutch man is a strapping 6 feet tall. The smallest men in the world are found in East Timor, which is why this country is not known for its basketball team.

0:02:45 – The speed camera was invented by Dutch racing driver Maurice Gatsonides. He once said, ‘Even I can’t escape my own invention because I love speeding’. Doh.

0:04:10 – The retro-looking ‘Marrakech’ title at the start of the lightweight sports cars test is a homage to the titles used in old movies filmed in glamorous overseas locations.

0:04:37 – The Mazda MX5 has a 1.5-litre, four cylinder engine making 129 horsepower. It can cover 0-62 in 8.3 seconds and has a top speed of 127mph.

0:05:29 – Lotus boss Colin Chapman signed a deal with John Z. DeLorean to develop the infamous DeLorean DMC-12 sportscar. It all became a bit complicated, DeLorean got caught in an FBI drugs sting, and some of the project budget went ‘missing’.

0:05:33 – The Zenos E10 S has a 2-litre, four cylinder turbocharged engine which produces 250 horsepower. It can go from 0-62 in 4 seconds and has a top speed of 145mph. It weighs 725 kilos.

0:09:34 – The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider has a 1.7-litre, four cylinder turbocharged engine which makes 234 horsepower. It can go from 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds and has a top speed of 160mph. It weighs 1128 kilos.

0:10:38 – Some of the Alfa 4C’s interior fittings are taken from other cars. Other, cheaper cars. Such as the Fiat Punto hatchback.

0:15:45 – The Zenos E10 S has a power-to-weight ratio of 345 horsepower-per-tonne. The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider has a power-to-weight ratio of 207 horsepower-per-tonne. Jeremy might have forgotten to look this up before the drag race.

0:16:16 – The Alfa 4C was designed in Milan, but it’s actually made in the Maserati factory in Modena. Because they know more about building exotic things.

0:16:50 – It is unclear if Jeremy’s lightweight sports car jacket was bought for a bet. But if it was, he definitely won.

0:18:30 – Jeremy’s scepticism about Dutch-made cars is well founded. Cars made in Holland include the Volvo 340, The Daf Daffodil and the Mitsubishi Carisma.

0:24:21 – The massive former Cold War airfield is RAF Bentwaters in Suffolk, England.

0:26:06 – Hammond’s car board game cannon is normally used to make cars to improbably massive jumps in movies.

0:28:20 – Thick – A quaint British word meaning daft, stupid, a bit like Richard Hammond.

0:33:19 – Horatio Hammond is a reference to Horatio Nelson, famed British naval commander who led his forces to victory in the Battle of Trafalgar, thereby preventing the French from invading England. He died in the process, and was honoured with a massive monument in London’s Trafalgar Square. The founder of the Pagani supercar company is also called Horatio, but this wasn’t a reference to him.

0:37:33 – Golden Earring’s Radar Love was first released in 1973. It reached number 7 in the UK charts, number 13 in the US charts, and was number 1 in Holland for 13 weeks. Or was that years?

0:39:33 – The night before the studio recording, Jeremy proudly showed off his ‘motoring accessory’ purchases in a busy Rotterdam hotel bar.

0:40:11 – When Jeremy says ‘Pass the Dutchie on the left hand side’ he’s making a reference to the chorus of the UK number 1 hit, Pass The Dutchie by Musical Youth. The Grand Tour – bringing you bang-up-to-date cultural references since 2016.

0:40:30 – The V8 lady inflater engine is from a Ford.

0:41:29 – Richard’s HOV lane inflatable passenger came in a box marked ‘Fatty Patty’

0:43:13 – Jeremy Clarkson owns some donkeys. The one in the lightweight cars film isn’t one of his.

0:43:41 – Richard Hammond lives in the countryside so he knows about manoeuvring animals.

0:44:37 – James May lives in London and does not have livestock. Although he does have a cat.

0:47:27 – Muppet – British word for a stupid or foolish person. Also, a type of puppet. But that’s not relevant in this case.

0:51:04 – During the filming of the sports car item, some British paparazzi turned up and tried to spy on the plucky hosts going about their business. Unfortunately for these photographers, they got stopped by the police, had to admit they didn’t have permits to work in Morocco and were marched back to the airport. Ooops.

0:51:48 – The setting for the race in the sports cars film is Atlas Studios, near Ouarzazate, Morocco.

0:53:15 – ‘The Dick From Del Monte’ is a reference to ‘The Man From Del Monte’, a tinned produce ad campaign shown in Britain in the 1980s. The titular character in the ads went around tasting and approving fruit while wearing a pale linen suit. Which, if you think about it, was an impractical choice of clothing.

0:57:05 – James estimates this to be the third most dusty he’s ever been.

0:58:50 – ‘Sir Jon Blashford-Hammond’ is a reference to famed British explorer Colonel John Blashford-Snell (who James seems to have accidentally knighted).

Where’s the “Trivia”?

' src=

They have to be manually typed out, so I will populate the remaining episodes when I have time.

' src=

Well, call me impressed. I really thought this one was the best of the series so far. The long car film had the best chemistry of the bunch, it really felt more like their old selves. Plus, the cars (especially the Alfa) really were stars in themselves and brought a lot to make it a ‘car’ film.

When Richard started introducing the battleships game, I was having flashbacks to TG seasons 2,3’ish when they would go to the ‘crucial’ of motorsport to see if nuns could drive monster trucks or some other ridiculous display of motoring. These bits were perhaps not the ‘best’ but they were always a little silly fun and I quite enjoyed the film.

The studio bits were as good as they have been. No ‘The American’ (thankfully) and we were teased a little with the celebrity bit which gave it just enough interest for me not to walk away and get a wobbly pop while I watched.

I’m really looking forward to the next few weeks as the films seem to be getting bigger and better!

DAY 1 – Trip starts in Marrakech Our tour starts in the Red City. With its dusty rooftops, maze-like streets and bustling souks, Marrakech encompasses the essence of Morocco. Head to the medina and people watch while you sip a mint tea in Jemaa el-Fna (the main square) or visit the Jardin Majorelle, just a short walk from our hotel.

There are no activities planned for today, so you’re free to arrive at any time. If you’d like an airport transfer, you’ll need to arrive at Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK), which is around a 20-minute drive from our hotel. Our tour leader will meet you in the hotel reception at 6pm for a welcome meeting and then an optional dinner. If you arrive later, they’ll catch you up as soon as possible.

ACCOMMODATION: Hotel Amani (or similar)Grade: Comfortable Hotel SINGLE ROOM AVAILABLE SWIMMING POOL AVAILABLE MEALS PROVIDED: NONE

DAY 2 – Explore Marrakech’s souks, squares and must-see sites on foot Today we’ll dive straight into the heady delights of Marrakech with a guided tour of the city. Marrakech is a destination like no other, offering a vibrant new sight, sound, or scent at every turn. We’ll pass by the rose-coloured Koutoubia (booksellers) Mosque on the way to Bahia Palace, famous for its decorated stucco walls and marble floors.

We’ll fuel up on fresh pastries from a traditional bakery before continuing to the medina on foot. There, we’ll be guided through the labyrinth of spice-scented souks, passing by craftsmen selling rugs, leather goods and crockery, before dropping by a spice shop to sample ripe dates and almonds. Finally, we’ll navigate our way out and into the energetic Jemaa el-Fna Square.

This afternoon you’re free to explore more at your own pace – amongst the array of must-see sites are Ben Youssef Madrasa, the Dar Si Said Palace, and the Menara Gardens, tick them off your list or delve back into the maze-like souks. In the evening, there’ll be the option to visit a traditional hammam.

ACCOMMODATION: Hotel Amani (or similar)Grade: Comfortable Hotel SINGLE ROOM AVAILABLE SWIMMING POOL AVAILABLE MEALS PROVIDED: BREAKFAST

DAY 3 – Experience Casablanca and Rabat Today starts with a visit to Casablanca’s Hassan II Mosque, the seventh largest mosque in the world and the largest on the continent of Africa. Built in honour of the King’s 60th birthday, this spectacular mosque is a feat of engineering and can hold an astounding 105,000 worshippers. Sitting right next to the water – to honour the Quran, which states “the throne of Allah was over the water” – it’s a meeting spot for locals to socialise and, of course, worship. Once we’ve marvelled at the marble exterior, we’ll head inside for a tour.

Departing Casablanca, we’ll head down the coast to Morocco’s capital, Rabat. Established at the country’s capital in 1912, by the French, Rabat has a distinct history, which dates as far back as 8BC, when settlers arrived in what is now the Chellah district. This evening, you’ll have free time to explore the city or walk down to the waterfront where you can watch the sunset over the estuary.

ACCOMMODATION: Hotel Le Musee (or similar)Grade: Comfortable Hotel SINGLE ROOM AVAILABLE MEALS PROVIDED: BREAKFAST

DAY 4 – Rabat and journey to Chefchaouen After breakfast, we’ll begin our day with a guided tour around the capital. Starting in the historic centre, we’ll stroll towards the Hassan Tower and spend time inside the marble interiors of the Mausoleum of Mohammed V. Next, we’ll wander the cobbled streets of Kasbah des Oudaias, the fortified area of the city, distinctly infused with Andalucian flavour.

Tour finished, we’ll break for lunch before journeying on to Chefchaouen. It’s a long drive and will take most of the afternoon, arriving into the famous ‘blue town’ around early evening.

ACCOMMODATION: Hotel Parador (or similar)Grade: Comfortable Hotel SINGLE ROOM AVAILABLE MEALS PROVIDED: BREAKFAST

DAY 5 – Guided tour to explore Chefchaouen Today we’ll delve into the treasures of Morocco’s ‘blue town’, nestled into the Rif Mountains. With its stacked white and blue houses and narrow, winding lanes, Chefchaouen is a prime example of Andalusia’s influence over Morocco. After a busy few days in the imperial cities, it offers a welcome slower pace and relaxed atmosphere.

From the cobbled medina and the Plaza Uta El Hammam to the red walls of the kasbah and the Grand Mosque, we’ll wander through Chefchaouen’s highlights before having a free afternoon to explore at your own pace.

ACCOMMODATION: Hotel Parador (or similar) Grade: Comfortable Hotel SINGLE ROOM AVAILABLE MEALS PROVIDED: BREAKFAST

DAY 6 – Cross the Rif Mountains to Volubilis, Meknes and Fes Crossing the Rif Mountains, this morning we’ll make our way to the ancient ruins of Volubilis. Morocco’s best-preserved Roman site, Volubilis was once the capital of the province of Mauritania Tingitana and home to 20,000 people. We’ll take the chance to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site before continuing on to Meknes.

Once the heart of the Moroccan Sultanate, Meknes was built by the tyrant, Moulay Ismail and in its heyday was teeming with opulent palaces and grand gateways. Today, much of Meknes has crumbled, though its regal essence remains. We’ll get a flavour for it with a visit to the old granary of Heri es-Souni and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, before departing for Fes, our base for the next two nights.

ACCOMMODATION: Hotel El Batha (or similar)Grade: Comfortable Hotel SINGLE ROOM AVAILABLE SWIMMING POOL AVAILABLE MEALS PROVIDED: BREAKFAST

DAY 7 – The highlights of Fes Today, we’ll wake up in the oldest of Morocco’s imperial cities, Fes. In its golden age, Fes was a hub of art, philosophy and trade and is still referred to as Morocco’s artisan capital. We’ll begin in Fes el Jadid – known as ‘new Fes’ despite dating back to the 13the century. The highlight of this morning is the Royal Palace where we’ll stop to marvel at the intricate golden doors (the palace isn’t open to visitors but is still a Morocco must-see for its majestic exterior alone). Once we’ve explored Fes el Jadid, we’ll head out and up to the viewpoint at Borj Nord for a look at the sprawling city from above.

After lunch, we’ll delve into Fes el-Bali, the oldest quarter of the city, with a guided tour. We’ll meander through the medina and souks – where you’ll see weavers, coppersmiths and tanners at work and be tempted by the smell of Harira soup and Berber pancakes. We’ll also drop by the al-Attarin Madrasa, one of the most beautiful medieval colleges in Morocco.

DAY 8 – Drive over the Middle Atlas to Erfoud Today we’ll spend the full day on the road to Erfoud. As we wind our way up the Middle Atlas, we’ll pass by the small mountain village of Azrou, which translates from Berber as ‘the rock’.

Up here in their mountain stronghold, the fiercely independent Berbers – the Lords of the Atlas – live by their own traditions. The Berber way of life is unique and lost to most of North Africa and music, dance, language, and religion are far removed from the rest of the Arab world.

We’ll continue into Berber sheep raising country and head towards Timadite and over the Col du Zad, before crossing the Tizi Talghemt Camel Pass and continuing via the Gorge du Ziz to Er Rachidia. Finally, we traverse a broad plateau past Meski Oasis, the so called ‘Blue Spring’ that borders the arid desert plains. Our last stop for today will be the desert settlement of Erfoud.

ACCOMMODATION: Hotel Jnane La Kasbah (or similar)Grade: Comfortable Hotel SINGLE ROOM AVAILABLE SWIMMING POOL AVAILABLE MEALS PROVIDED: BREAKFAST

DAY 9 – Fortified villages and Erg Chebbi Our day starts by following the meandering Ziz River towards Rissani where you’ll notice the landscape begin to change as we edge closer to the dramatic dunes of the Sand Sea. The holy city of Rissani is the homeland of the Alaouite dynasty, who reigned in the region for 300 years. This morning, we’ll take the opportunity to visit the founder’s mausoleum before we explore the local ksour (fortified villages).

In the afternoon, we’ll continue to Merzouga, a small village on the outskirts of the desert. From here, we’ll swap bus for camels and journey on into the dunes of Erg Chebbi. Our home for tonight is right here in the desert, at a Berber camp, where we can relax by the campfire and fill up on traditional tagine.

Our camp is basic but comfortable – tents fit up to four people each and are fully equipped with mattresses, blankets, and pillows. Note that the showers are simple and hot water and good water pressure aren’t guaranteed.

ACCOMMODATION: Nomad Camp – Chebbi Dunes (or similar)Grade: Comfortable Camping SINGLE ROOM UNAVAILABLE MEALS PROVIDED: BREAKFAST & DINNER

DAY 10 – Sunrise at Erg Chebbi and travel to Todra Valley This morning, we’ll wake up before dawn to watch the sun rise over the Sahara from the top of the sand dunes. After breakfast, we’ll depart the desert by camel, a true Moroccan experience.

Our route today takes us along the southern slopes of the Atlas to Tinerhir. We’ll have time to explore the area and wander the lush grounds that line the banks of the river, an oasis of date palms, olive groves and fruit orchards. Finally, we’ll continue on to our hotel in the upper Todra Valley, where we’ll spend two nights.

ACCOMMODATION: Hotel Kenzi Saghro (or similar)Grade: Comfortable Hotel SINGLE ROOM AVAILABLE SWIMMING POOL AVAILABLE MEALS PROVIDED: BREAKFAST

DAY 11 – Walk in Todra Gorge Today we have an optional walk to Todra Gorge’s Abdelali viewpoint. The ochre cliffs of the gorge tower above the narrow pass where the track and river struggle for right of way and Berber women drive their goats up to higher land.

We’ll follow the main road of the gorge before joining a small mule path, gradually working our way up the ravine to the viewpoint, where we’re treated to vistas of the Jebel Sahro range and down into the gorge.

Today’s trek is graded as moderate, covers six kilometres and is expected to take around five hours to complete. It has an ascent of around 500 metres and a descent of around 550 metres, walking on terrain that is narrow, steep, and rocky in some sections. We recommend wearing walking boots with ankle support.

If you don’t feel like taking on the trek, you’re free to explore the gorge valley floor or take in the scenery from one of the nearby cafes.

DAY 12 – Valley of 1000 Kasbahs and Ait Ben Haddou This morning, we head west to make a short stop in El Kelaa des M’Gouna. Famous for its roses, the town is blanketed by a landscape of scented blooms each spring, which are harvested in the May during the Festival of Roses. The blossoms are used to make rosewater, which is sold throughout the Islamic world.

Driving on through the Dades Valley, we enter the Valley of 1000 Kasbahs, an oasis land teeming with kasbahs and towns that each have their own distinct character. You’ll notice the mud and straw structures become more ornate as we travel further along the valley.

This afternoon, we’ll visit the fortified Berber settlement of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site widely considered to be one of Morocco’s most picturesque spots. You might recognize the ornate crenelated towers from scenes in Jesus of Nazareth and Lawrence of Arabia, which both took advantage of the dramatic setting.

ACCOMMODATION: Hotel Les Jardins de Ouarzazate (or similar)Grade: Comfortable Hotel SINGLE ROOM AVAILABLE SWIMMING POOL AVAILABLE MEALS PROVIDED: BREAKFAST

DAY 13 – Draa Valley, Tamgroute and Erg Chegaga Today, we head back into the desert and drive through the Draa Valley, an oasis lined with Berber villages and ruined kasbahs and backed by lush green plains and the snow-capped mountains beyond. We’ll stop at a pottery cooperative in Tamgroute, a historical town known for its 15th-century library that houses books over 700-years old. After a visit to the library, we’ll journey on to Mhamid and swap our bus for 4WD jeeps to continue off road and into the sand dunes of the Sahara.

After getting settled into our camp in Erg Chegaga, our tour leader will take us on a walk up the dunes for a vista of the surrounding desert, telling us a bit about the flora and fauna found amongst the sands. Our home tonight is a traditional nomad camp with tents that sleep 3-5 people each, bedding is provided. The camp has a restaurant tent where we can eat a dinner and breakfast prepared by the crew.

ACCOMMODATION: Nomad Camp (or similar)Grade: Simple Camping SINGLE ROOM UNAVAILABLE MEALS PROVIDED: BREAKFAST & DINNER

DAY 14 – Explore the Sahara, Foum Zguid and Tata Today, we’ll leave the camp after breakfast and take 4WDs to the oasis town of Foum Zguid. The drive is 90km and will take between three and four hours. As we’re driving through desert tracks, the road will be bumpy, but we’ll be rewarded with the surreal experience of driving across desert plains without a human or animal in sight.

At Foum Zguid, we’ll board our bus and start our journey to Tata. Along the way, we’ll stop at Tissinnt, where we’ll take in the waterfalls and meet the local nomads of the area. On arrival in Tata, our destination for tonight, we’ll have time to soak in the town’s pink facades and laidback charm.

DAY 15 – Cross the Anti-Atlas to Mirleft This morning, we’ll drive through the Anti-Atlas, a wild landscape of barren desert and rocky outcrops. We’ll pass by small villages before we stop at the gateway of the Sahara, Goulemin. We’ll have lunch in the small town and stretch our legs with a walk through the Taghjijt Valley, an oasis of palms, and buy dates to snack on from a local farmer.

As we continue our journey, the landscapes become greener and lusher – a sure sign that the Atlantic Ocean is almost in sight. Tonight, we’ll settle into the small town of Mirleft, just off the coast, where we’ll have free time to explore the beach, a ten-minute walk from our hotel, or relax by the pool before dinner.

DAY 16 – Sous-Massa National Park and Taroudant Today we’ll drive north through the Sous Valley, passing through forests and plantations to the Sous-Massa National Park, a reserve set on the Sous-Massa River and the Atlantic Ocean. The park is home to several traditional Berber villages, but the real attraction is the vibrant bird life – keep your eyes peeled to spot the Bald Ibis that call the park home. We’ll also explore the old fisherman’s caves, where we might be lucky enough to spot flamingos bathing.

Afterwards, we’ll continue to Taroudant, the former capital of the south of Morocco, where our tour leader will give us a short orientation. With its golden rampart, this Amazig town is one of the most beautiful in Morocco’s south. Take a while to stroll in the shade of the towers and delve into the souk, where you’ll be tempted by stalls selling cooked meats and flatbreads that fill the air with a smoky aroma – the perfect way to finish a long day.

ACCOMMODATION: Riad Hida (or similar)Grade: Comfortable Riad SINGLE ROOM AVAILABLE SWIMMING POOL AVAILABLE MEALS PROVIDED: BREAKFAST

DAY 17 – Travel the Atlantic Coast to Essaouira This morning, we’ll set off on the four-hour drive to the historic port town of Essaouira, where we’ll spend the next two nights. Arriving in time to have lunch, we’ll head to a traditional Moroccan restaurant or down to the port to taste the fresh seafood cooked over charcoal by the local sellers.

Our tour leader will take us on a walking tour to help us get our bearings, dipping into the ancient walls of the town and into the market. We’ll be staying in a traditional riad – a Moroccan house built around a central courtyard. Riads are popular and can get booked up quickly so at times we might stay in an alternative accommodation to the one listed, we’ll always ensure the quality is the same standard.

DAY 18 – Full day in Essaouira Today is free to spend as you wish in the charming port town of Essaouira. A day is just enough time to settle into the relaxed but lively way of life here. Head into the old walled medina into the maze of streets lined with craftsmen selling souvenirs from handmade leather belts to jewellery to wooden boxes inlaid with mother of pearl. Outside of the medina, you can take in the Mellah (the old Jewish Quarter) before sinking your feet into the golden sands of the beach and watching as the fishermen return to shore with their day’s catch.

The “Grand Tour”

15 days from £1250 per person

Experience the very best of what Morocco has to offer from its historic cities, vibrant and colourful culture, beautiful mountain and desert scenery and coastal charms. Start in the culturally rich city of Fes, followed by a unique personal tour of the Atlas Mountains and Sahara desert before spending a few nights in bustling Marrakech and then wind down in the charming coastal town of Essaouira.  We also offer a slightly different routing that combines Fez with the “Moroccan Circle” using the rail network and you should consider both options before confirming

Your Itinerary

the grand tour morocco

Day 1 - Arrive in Fes

From the Fes aiport or train station it is only 10 -20 minute transfer and then a short walk through the Medina to your riad.  The are many to choose from and our favourite is Ryad Mabrouka for style and service

Fes

Days 2 & 3 - Explore the souks

As Morocco’s third largest city and with an established role as a leading cultural and intellectual centre, Fes boasts more sites and historical attractions than all the other cities of Morocco put together. You will therefore have plenty to keep you occupied in this intoxicating town which  is less affected by the tourist influence  than many other parts of Morocco, including Marrakech. A trip to the tanneries, a visit to the nearby thermal springs and the site of the largest Roman ruin in Morocco at Volubilis are all highly recommended.

Erg Chebbi

Day 4 - Heading to the desert

Your English-speaking driver will collect you from your riad to take you on your 4 day Atlas Mountain and Desert tour. You will leave Fes for the Middle Atlas mountains, passing through the cedar forests of the Barbary Apes before heading to the desert in Merzouga, home of 300m high sand dunes. You can choose to stay in a traditional local auberge or rest under the stars in a desert bivouac, approached by camel. We recommend one night in the auberge and one under canvas. Yasmina is a good option.

Morocco desert

Day 5 - A day in the dunes

As well as the obvious delights of the sand dunes, Yasmina is famous for it’s lake which appears after rainfall – picture this – the bleak hammada, blue lake water, pink flamingos and the red dunes – everyone suddenly becomes a professional photographer. Stay the night under canvas in a desert bivouac arriving at dusk and leaving again at dawn – the most beautiful times.

Ait Benhaddou

Day 6 - The Gorges & Ait Ben Haddou

After the night in the desert, return to the auberge to wash away some of the sand and have breakfast before heading towards the Atlas Mountains. A good lunch stop is the Todra Gorge with its switch-back roads and river chasms. You will then arrive in late afternoon at the Ait Ben Haddou rock village and fortress. This is Morocco’s most famous backdrop and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You will stay a few minutes further on at Kasbah Ellouze.

the grand tour morocco

Day 7 - The High Atlas

The journey on to Marrakech takes you through the Tiz n Tickha pass, leading to Telouet, the old Berber stronghold in the Atlas Mountains. After Telouet, the route climbs to over 6,000 feet, then winds down into Marrakech where you will check into your riad. We have loads of fantastic riads, a client favourite is Riad Les Trois Mages for its beautiful roof terrace

the grand tour morocco

Days 8 & 9 - Exploring Marrakech

Spend the next 2-3 days enjoying everything Marrakech has to offer. Take an early morning visit to the Majorelle gardens before it gets too hot and all the bus loads of tourists arrive. Spend afternoons visiting the various mosques and historical sites, not forgetting to indulge yourself with a traditional Moroccan exfoliation and massage in a local hammam.

Lastly, and not to be missed is the main square at night where you can wander amongst the snake charmers, storytellers and henna tattooists before sitting atop a rooftop bar with a chilled glass of wine watching the action unfold beneath you.

Madada Mogador, Essaouira

Day 10 - Head for Essaouira

Day 10 Your driver will collect you from your riad and take you to Essaouira to arrive around lunchtime.

A firm favourite with our clients is the stylish Madada Mogador in the medina with fantastic ocean views.

Holiday activities on the beach in Essaouira

Days 11-14 - Relax

Use these days to relax, pottering around the souks, strolling along the seafront and eating great seafood in the port. Alternatively, Essaouira – although offering a quieter pace of life – is also perfect for those seeking more active thrills, being famed for its water sports and seafront attractions such as horse riding and quad-biking in the dunes.

the grand tour morocco

Day 15 - Home

Depending on the time of your return flight, either stay your last night in Essaouira or return to Marrakech if you have an early morning flight.

Cost for the 14 nights is £1250 per person B&B in mid season (excludes flights) based on 2 sharing a double room. Includes all transport and accommodation on B&B basis.

Note 1: This itinerary is best if you fly directly into Fes but there are not many flights and we can also arrange a rail or road transfer from Marrakech to start the trip which adds little to the cost.

Note 2: If you have a day or two more we recommend adding a day in the town of Taroudant rather than going to Marrakech on day 7 and instead leaving Marrakech to the end after Essaouira. You see more of the country and have the satisfaction of never travelling the same road twice! It adds around £150pp for 2 extra days.

You can get flights from as little as £100 per person return and do ask us for advice.  Alternatively we can book the flights for you but a booking fee may apply.

What's included?

  • Prices start from £1250 per person
  • Accommodation on B&B basis
  • Private transfers (air-conditioned vehicle with an English speaking driver)
  • Local taxes
  • All trips are ATOL protected or ABTA bonded to ensure you are fully covered

High Atlas Mountains

Sahara desert, ait ben haddou, oualidia lagoon, chefchaouen, your adventure starts here.

We were dumped off our tour in Morocco because one of us contracted COVID and the tour company moved on leaving us behind without any support. Badr drove early morning from Marrakech to Fes to pick us up and then turned around drive us back (about a 14 hour round trip). Along the way we developed a relationship with Badr and decided to use him over the next 3 days to see some of the things we had missed on our tour. Badr was brilliant in driving us safely over these three days, in often difficult conditions. He also proved to be very knowledgeable of the history and culture of Morocco, and was all too willing to share this knowledge with us. Further, he went out of his way to find replacement accommodation for us and make sure we were safe at all times. I couldn’t recommend Badr more highly if you need a driver and guide in Morocco. • darylbarrel 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent trip with Badur! We were a group of students on a 7 day grand tour of Morocco with Badur as our wonderful guide! 😊 Private van with wifi took us around Ourzazate, Merzouga Sahara Desert, Fes, Chefchaouen, Marrakech (stayed nights in all these cities, with visits to Rabat and Casablanca as well. A fair bit of driving between cities, with pit stops for food and lots of opportunity to take photos at the scenic spots, and Badur was especially patient with us and flexible with our schedule. Visiting different cities meant we were able to see the varying landscapes of Morocco, each unique. Highlights were staying in the desert for a night (camel ride, sand dune ATV, beware the cold at night!). Riads/hotels chosen were nice and had breakfast/dinner settled. Badur was very knowledgeable and explained history to us along the way, with other private guides in Fes and Marrakech. He also helped us find food, was concerned for safety and even booked a restaurant to celebrate on of our friends birthday. Thank you for taking us around and laughing with during our grand tour of Morocco! 🤗 - Singapore and Malaysia ladies Read more Written January 7, 2023

He took us to les gorges de Dades, Nkob, Zagora, the desert dunes of Chegaga, Tata, Tafraouite and finally Agadir. We saw the most spectacular landscapes and a wonderful time. Azzedine was always perfectly on time, and brought us flawlessly from one place to the next. We felt very safely and he always respected the traffic rules and speed limits. He helped us find our ways in local bars and restaurants. He was also always totally respectful to us and the children. And he taught us about local culture and habits! In summary, the perfect experience. Read more Written January 2, 2023

Moroccan culture is a vibrant tapestry of influences from the Arab, Berber, and European worlds. It is a culture that is rich in tradition, art, music, and food.

They are also deeply religious people, and their faith plays an important role in their everyday lives. If this is going to be your first time visiting Morocco, then this is the perfect tour for you. The tour is led by expert local guides and uses carefully selected authentic accommodation.

Designed by local experts to show you the highlights of Morocco, the Grand Tour of Morocco  can be ran at anytime of the year.

Day 1 – Marrakech

Welcome to the Grand Tour of Morocco! On arrival at Marrakech Menara Airport, you’ll be welcomed by your private driver for a transfer to your hotel in the city. Marrakesh is known for its colourful chaos, where you can leave your cares behind and go with the flow, exploring the labyrinth of twisting alleyways, with spice sellers, fortune tellers, snake charmers, and monkey handlers. Your driver will provide you with an overview of what to expect before you check-in and enjoy dinner at your hotel this evening.

Overnight at the Riad & Spa Bahia Salam (D)

Marrakesh (Marrakech)

Situated to the north of the foothills of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains and fringing the famed Sahara, the bustling UNESCO-listed city of Marrakesh is an enchanting travel destination. It is also home to the largest traditional Berber market in Morocco and one of the busiest squares in the world, known as Djemaa el Fna. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit this square in the evening as it transforms into an enormous, open-air restaurant, and browse through exquisite carpets, spices and a myriad of other items. Art, design and architecture enthusiasts flock to the city to see its incredible artisan achievements, so beautifully expressed at the glorious Bahia Palace, Dar Si Said and Saadian Tombs, as well as at several museums. The other-worldly Jardin Majorelle is also unmissable.

Day 2 – Explore Marrakesh

Today you'll enjoy a full day guided tour of Marrakech, the second oldest imperial city in Morocco (after Fes). Also known as the Red City, it is home to numerous prestigious monuments which bear witness to the colourful history of North Africa. In the morning you'll take in key sites such as the Bahia Palace, the UNESCO Heritage Agdal Gardens, and Koutoubia Mosque. The afternoon will then be dedicated to local life, taking in the mesmerizing souks and famous Djemaa el Fna square, the epicentre of Marrakech in the medina (old town). The lively atmosphere that never slows down generates an exciting buzz accommodating a variety of tastes with everything from monkey tamers to musicians, tattoo artists, and merchants with fascinating shops.

Overnight at the Riad & Spa Bahia Salam (BD)

Day 3 – A free day to explore

You’ll have the day to do as you wish today, with options (payable locally) for day trips to coastal Essouira or the Atlas Mountains . If you’d like to see more of Marrakech, stick around and relax or take advantage of one of the many spas with hammams for a tranquil soak and perhaps some indulgent treatments. You might delve into the culture through its food with a cooking class, or just wander the enticing streets. Enjoy dinner at a typical Moroccan restaurant, or at your hotel.

Day 4 - Ait Ben Haddou

We will say goodbye to Marrakech this morning, setting off with your private driver on a scenic journey up and over the Atlas Mountains. Enjoy spectacular views as you rise through a series of mountains and valleys before descending down the other side and stopping to visit Ait Ben Haddou, a remarkable fortified kasbah that sits high atop a hill. The medieval city has been featured in famous films like “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Gladiator,” thanks to its unrivalled beauty. You’ll continue the short distance Ouarzazate, another popular Hollywood filming site for everything from “Game of Thrones” to James Bond movies. On arrival check in to your hotel and relax for the rest of the day. Driving time today will be around 4 hours.

Overnight at the Riad Ksar Ighnda (BD)

Ait Ben Haddou

Set along the former caravan route between Marrakech and the Sahara, Ait Benhaddou is a popular destination in the Ouarzazate province. This ancient Moroccan village is a traditional mud-brick city edging the High Atlas Mountains. It has featured in many Hollywood movies, including Lawrence of Arabia, Jesus of Nazareth, Jewel of the Nile, and Gladiator. Thanks to the Hollywood touch-ups through the years, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is well preserved. It is a ‘ksar’ which means fortified village and served as a convenient stopover for hundreds of caravans of camels following the renowned trans-Saharan trade route. Travellers can wander the ancient alleyways, view the traditional architecture, and visit the granary perched at the top of the hill. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the Mausoleum of Ben-Haddon at the foot of the hill on the opposite side of town, and soak up the breath-taking views.

Day 5 – Erg Chebbi Desert

After breakfast you’ll be taken to visit the world-famous Atlas Cinema Studios in Ouarzazate. Known as the Hollywood of Africa, it is the largest film studio in the world and has been used to film many well-known classics. You’ll then venture into the desert, passing through palm groves and fields of roses before stopping at magnificent Todra Gorge, the Grand Canyon of Morocco, with its towering limestone cliffs that change colour with the position of the sun. We then arrive in the Merzouga region of the desert, changing to travel in a 4x4 for an exhilarating ride over the sand dunes before arriving at the desert camp. Marvel at the Sahara sunset before enjoying dinner around the campfire and settling in to spend the night in a Berber-style tent.

Overnight at the Desert Luxury Camp (BD)

Erg Chebbi Desert

Situated in the vast desert region of Saharan Morocco, dividing Morocco and Algeria, Erg Chebbi is one of two Moroccan ‘ergs’, which are a sea of dunes. What it lacks in size - compared to the deserts of Algeria, Libya and Namibia - it makes up for in its extraordinarily scenic golden landscape, which changes colours dramatically at sunset. The dunes of Erg Chebbi span over 30 kilometres and rise up to 160 metres.

Day 6 – Erg Chebbi to Fes

Wake up and join a camel ride out in the dunes to enjoy a stunning desert sunrise. Then return to the camp for a hearty Berber breakfast, before checking out and continuing by road to Fes. This long journey will take you back up and over the Atlas Mountains, passing cedar forests filled with Barbary monkeys, and maybe glimpses of the nomadic Berbers as they travel through the mountains. Stop in Ifrane, with its Swiss alpine looks, before reaching your hotel in Fes where you’ll enjoy dinner tonight.

Overnight at Palais Ommeyad (BD)

Morocco’s second-largest city and the country’s former capital, Fes (Fez) is an exotic mix of Arabic architecture, ancient alleyway calls to prayer and colourful markets; all mixed in with a good dose of modern culture. Home to the venerated Karaouine Mosque, which dates back to 859 AD and incorporates an Islamic university, and to the country’s most hallowed shrine, the Zaouia Moulay Idriss II; Fes is regarded as the spiritual seat of Morocco. Music lovers should try to synchronise their trips with the annual Festival of Sacred Music, one of the highlights of the city’s cultural calendar showcasing diverse performances of spiritual and religious music; while those with a penchant for shopping can browse the mesmerizing colourful markets selling an exquisite array of silver, leather, and other handicrafts up for grabs.

Day 7 – Fes (Fez)

Meet up with a local guide for a fascinating tour of this ancient city, considered to be the cultural capital of the country. Walk through the bustling streets, just a few of some 9,000 different passageways, taking in the atmospheric souks and medina. Look out for colourful spices and skilled artisans and visit Nejjarine Square with its famous fountain. You'll also visit alluring madrasa Bouanania Medersa, the mausoleum of Mouley Driss, Karaouiyine Mosque, and the oldest university in the world, founded in 859AD.

Day 8 – A day at leisure in Fes

You’ll get a full day to enjoy the country’s cultural capital at your leisure. No activities are included today. For an authentic local experience, relax at one of the many hammams throughout the city. You might want to do some shopping at one of the oldest souks, like the Henna Souk which offers traditional cosmetics like henna and ceramics. Be sure to visit the Golden Gates at Royal Palace, one of the top spots in Fes for photos, before returning to your hotel for dinner.

Day 9 – Fes to Chefchaouen

This enchanting adventure continues as we leave Fes after breakfast, taking a scenic drive toward the Rif mountains and the famous Blue City, Chefchaouen . Stop for a guided tour of Meknes, the fortified Ismailia capital visiting the imposing port, the Herri Essouani, and the Jewish Quarter. You’ll also visit the Moulay Ismail Shrine, an 18th-century mausoleum with Islamic architecture, and the Roman ruins of Volubilis - the 3rd century BC capital of Mauritania. Continue to Chefchaouen, with

its vibrant blue architecture nestled in the hills. We arrive late afternoon and check-in to your hotel. Driving time should be around 4-4.5hrs today.

Overnight at Dar Echchaouen Maison d'hôtes & Riad (BD)

Chefchaouen

Hidden high up in the Rif Mountains of north-eastern Morocco, Chefchaouen is a relatively large historical town known for the striking, variously hued blue-washed buildings of its picturesque Medina. Visitors can look forward to wandering along narrow, cobblestone streets lined with leather and weaving workshops and an array of historical monuments. Must-see attractions include the town's exquisite waterfall; the ruins of an old mosque on a hill behind it; and the shady main square of Uta el Hammam, which is home to the red-walled casbah - a 15th-century fortress and dungeon displaying ethnographic and art exhibits. This charming town also serves as an ideal base for travellers eager to explore the traditional villages and dramatic mountains of the scenic surrounding area.

Day 10 – Explore Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is a truly beautiful mountain town, renowned for its azure Andalusian architecture. The town was originally established in the 15th century by Moors and Jews fleeing the Reconquista of Spain. Walk through truly unique structures, stopping at Uta el-Hammam, the town's central medina (old town) where the locals meet in cafes. Chefchaouen gives visitors a glimpse of a more rural way of life as opposed to the large busy cities.

Day 11 – Chefchaouen via Rabat to Casablanca

After breakfast and checking out of your Chefchaouen hotel, your driver will transfer you to Rabat, the capital city of Morocco. On arrival you'll meet a local guide to explore the city which is located on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the river Bou Regreg. You'll visit the 12th-century Hassan Tower and Mausoleum, a masterpiece of modern Alaouite architecture, along with Roman ruins and the Kasbah des Oudaias which overlooks the sea. You'll then take the last leg of your journey into

Casablanca, arriving mid-afternoon.

Overnight at Gray Boutique Hotel (BD)

Casablanca lies on the Atlantic coast, in central-western Morocco. Fondly known by locals simply as ‘Casa', the capital is the industrial, economic, and cultural heart of this remarkable country, as well as its most cosmopolitan, liberal, and progressive city. While most visitors overlook Casablanca in favour of Morocco’s more popular and exotic tourist areas, this sprawling metropolis has plenty to offer the discerning traveller and has many hidden historical and cultural gems just waiting to be discovered. The city is famous for its spectacular Art Deco and Moorish Revival architecture, constructed during the Colonial Period. Explore the Old Medina, a tiny, ancient, walled village; visit the impressive King Hassan II Mosque; discover the ornate rooms, masterfully tiled floors, and intricately carved wooden ceilings of the Hispanic-Moorish Mahkama du Pacha; or simply watch the world go by at one of the many ocean-view cafes along the waterfront boulevard.

Day 12 – Casablanca

Casablanca is the largest city in Morocco located on the Atlantic coast, it is the country's chief port and its economic hub. The town and the medina of Casablanca, as it is today, was founded in 1770 AD by Sultan Muhammad III ben Abdallah and there has been a settlement in this location since the 7th Century B.C. This morning your driver will meet you and take you on a guided tour of the city, including a visit to Mohammed V Square, the spectacular Hasan II Mosque, and a walk along the

evocative 'corniche' waterfront.

Day 13 – The end of the grand tour of Morocco

Sadly, your Grand Tour of Morocco has come to an end. At an appropriate time your driver will transfer you privately from the hotel to Casablanca International Airport, arriving in plenty of time to check in for your onward flight. (B)

Government Travel Safety Advice

We strongly recommend that you check your government's travel advisory for up-to-date information and advice about your destination: safety and security, entry requirements, health, local laws and customs. For UK citizens, check the latest Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advice. Please refer to the COVID-19 entry requirements page for any country-specific conditions of entry.

Visa and Passport Information

British nationals don’t need a visa to enter Morocco for the purpose of tourism for up to 3 months. When entering the country, make sure your passport is stamped. Some tourists have experienced difficulties leaving the country because their passport bears no entry stamp.

Passport validity

Your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay in Morocco. However, the Moroccan Consulate General in London advise that your passport should be valid for at least 3 months on your date of entry to Morocco. If your passport does not meet this requirement you may face difficulties and you should check with the Moroccan authorities and your travel provider before travelling. Before travelling, make sure your passport isn’t damaged. Some travellers have been refused entry when travelling on damaged passports.

Other nationalities should consult their local embassy or consular office.

Vaccinations

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the latest country-specific health advice from the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) on the TravelHealthPro website . Each country-specific page has information on vaccine recommendations, any current health risks or outbreaks, and factsheets with information on staying healthy abroad.

It is a condition of booking with Our Local tour that you have adequate valid travel insurance. It is your responsibility to arrange appropriate travel insurance and ensure you have read and understood the full terms and conditions of your travel insurance policy to ensure that you are covered for all activities you intend to undertake whilst on the tour, including all optional activities.

Your Insurance Policy must fully cover you for medical expenses and emergency repatriation to your home country. Please ensure your policy includes medical emergency helicopter evacuation in the event of illness or injury and covers the entire duration of your holiday. If you are trekking at altitude please ensure that there is no upper altitude limit which may limit or exclude cover for your trip. Please ensure that you are covered for the full amount of your holiday cost, as insufficient cover could invalidate a claim under the policy.

What to bring on your Grand Tour of Morocco.

Lightweight clothing is essential however a warmer jumper is advisable for cooler evenings in the mountains  A light rain coat is advisable. There is a laundry available in most hotels.

Lightweight comfortable shoes/trainers and sandals. Waterproof footware is recommended.

Luggage while on your tour

Please allow yourself one main piece of luggage and a day-sack. Remember, you are expected to carry your own baggage, so don't overload yourself, a soft wheely bag may be easier to manage than a suit case.

We recommend a sunhat, sunscreen, a torch, insect repellent and a waterbottle. A solar charger for your phone and other electronics is a good idea.

Banking and Currency

Moroccan Dirham (MAD; symbol Dh) = 100 centimes. Notes are in denominations of Dh200, 100, 50, 20 and 10. Coins are in denominations of Dh10, 5 and 1, and 50, 20, 10 and 5 centimes.

Mon-Thurs 0830-1230 and 1500-1830, Fri 0830-1200 and 1500-1830.

Most major credit cards are accepted in larger restaurants, hotels, guest houses and the occasional shop in the souks, with Visa and MasterCard being accepted most widely.

Cash can be withdrawn from ATMs in larger towns, although service in smaller towns can be erratic. Most major hotels now have more reliable ATMs.

Traveller's cheques are accepted in some areas but are not advised, as the exchange can be problematic and it can be difficult to find a bank able to cash them, although some of the main tourist hotels offer this facility.

Travel, Transport and Getting Around

The high-speed toll roads connecting Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca, Meknes, Fes, Marrakech and El Jadida are of excellent quality. Coastal communities and most large towns are also well served by good roads. In the interior, south of the High Atlas Mountains, road travel becomes much more difficult, especially across the Atlas Mountains in winter. I nternational and local car hire companies have offices in major towns, cities and airports. Car hire is generally expensive, and prices vary with the season. The minimum age for driving a hired car is 18, although many hire companies will require drivers to be 21 or over.

Metered petit taxis are available in major towns. Taxi drivers are not usually tipped, although it is common to round fares up at least to the next dirham on short trips. Larger, grand taxis are usually Mercedes cars, used for travel outside medinas and to areas outside towns. These can be shared, but fares should be agreed before departure as they don't have meters.

Bike hire is available in most major towns - although attempting to cycle through city traffic is inadvisable. For those travelling longer distances, bikes can be transported on trains and buses.

Making use of the extensive bus network is the cheapest and most popular way to get around Morocco. Buses serve most communities, and private operators compete for custom on the more popular routes. The major bus companies are Compagnie de Transports Marocains, Trans Ghazala , and ONCF. There are extensive bus services in Casablanca and other main towns. Pre-purchase tickets are sold.

Traffic drives on the right in Morocco and the wearing of seatbelts is compulsory. The speed limit is 40kph (25mph) in cities and built up areas, rising to 80km (50mph) on more major roads, up to 120km (75mph) on motorways. No alcohol at all is allowed in the bloodstream when driving.

Foreign driving licences are accepted, as well as International Driving Permits. Third Party insurance is required. Insurance documentation and a licence must be carried with you at all times. Insurance can be arranged locally.

The Moroccan rail system, run by Office National des Chemins de Fer (ONCF) provides regular services. The network runs from Oujda in the northeast to Casablanca on the west coast, Tangier on the north coast and Fes and Marrakech in the interior. However, only a small part of the country is served, and even large centres such as Agadir and Essaouira are not covered.

Food, Drink and Cuisine Advice

Water sources outside main cities and towns may be contaminated and sterilisation is advisable. Bottled water is the best bet and is available everywhere. Milk is unpasteurised, so boil before drinking. Meat and fish should be freshly cooked and served hot. Vegetables are typically served cooked. If eating fruit, try to stick to fruit that can be peeled before eating. Most produce is grown organically, without chemical pesticides or fertilisers but it’s highly likely to have been washed in unsterilized water.

Fusion isn't a new trend in Morocco, where the cuisine is a blend of Mediterranean, Arabic, Jewish, Persian, West African and Berber influences. Meals range from the diffa, an elaborate multicourse feast featuring couscous and grilled meats, to quick brochettes (kebab) from a roadside stall. Produce is seasonal, grown locally and typically without chemical pesticides or fertilisers.

Tagines, the fragrant stews of meat, vegetables or fish, named after the distinctive conical earthenware vessel they’re cooked in are the Moroccans main staple. Flavours revolve around a subtle array of spices, and traditionally every spice shop would have its own secret ras el hanout spice blend recipe.

Restaurants range from buffet diners to high-end establishment serving gourmet fare. Many now offer à la carte menus and a three-course fixed-price menu is still common at dinner. Restaurants in cities and large resorts are cosmopolitan, offering a good selection of cuisines, including typical Moroccan fare, plus French, Italian, Spanish and fusion dishes.

The best way to experience the true flavour of Moroccan cuisine, however, is to sample the street food. Djemaa el Fna square in the centre of Marrakech sees an explosion of pop-up food stalls after dark, and most other cities have their own foodie quarters. Scrumptious local specialities such as almonds, olives and a rainbow array of spices can be found in souks across the country.

Laws on alcohol are fairly liberal (for non-Muslim visitors) and bars in most tourist areas stay open late. Wines, beers and spirits are available to tourists. Muslims are forbidden to drink alcohol. By law, no-one is allowed to drink alcohol in view of a mosque or during Ramadan, although tourist establishments sometimes flout this rule. Locally produced wines, beers and mineral waters are reasonably priced, but imported drinks tend to be expensive.

Tipping waiting staff is expected (if service is satisfactory), usually up to 5 dirams on small bills, and around 10% for larger bills.

Climate and Weather

Morocco’s climate is very diverse, varying with the season and region. In general the country has a tropical climate, with temperatures reaching as high as 35°C (95°F) and as low as 5°C (41°F) in the Sahara. The coast has a warm, Mediterranean climate tempered on the eastern coast by southwest trade winds whilst inland areas have a hotter, drier, continental climate. In the south of the country, the weather is very hot and dry throughout most of the year, though temperatures can drop dramatically at night, especially in the months of December and January.

Rain falls from November to March in coastal areas, and the country is mostly dry with high temperatures in summer and a cooler climate in the mountains. Marrakech and Agadir enjoy an average temperature of 21°C (70ºF) during the winter.

Owing to the relatively high winter temperatures, and summers that are dry rather than unbearably humid, Morocco is an all-year round destination. If you really want to avoid the heat, the best time to visit is during the shoulder seasons of April to May, and September to November.

Clothing and Dress Recommendations

Lightweight cottons and linens are best worn during summer, with warm medium weight wear for the evenings, during the winter, and in the mountains. Waterproofing is advisable in the wet season, particularly on the coast and in the mountains. Both men and women should be careful to wear clothing that is cognisant of cultural sensitivities – long sleeves and low hems will be looked on favourably. Sunscreen, a sunhat and sunglasses are essential especially in summer.

Internet Availability

Access is unrestricted and is widely available in business centres, hotels and in internet cafés. A one month prepaid unlimited internet access card for laptops, iPhones and smartphones is available from Maroc Telecom (who also have the best national coverage).

Electricity and Plug Standards

Electrical sockets (outlets) in Morocco are one of the two European standard electrical socket types: The "Type C" Europlug and the "Type E" and "Type F" Schuko. If your appliance's plug doesn't match the shape of these sockets, you will need a travel plug adapter in order to plug in. Travel plug adapters simply change the shape of your appliance's plug to match whatever type of socket you need to plug into. If it's crucial to be able to plug in no matter what, bring an adapter for all three types.

Electrical sockets (outlets) in the Kingdom of Morocco usually supply electricity at between 220 and 240 volts AC. If you're plugging in an appliance that was built for 220-240 volt electrical input, or an appliance that is compatible with multiple voltages, then an adapter is all you need.

But travel plug adapters do not change the voltage, so the electricity coming through the adapter will still be the same 220-240 volts the socket is supplying. North American sockets supply electricity at between 110 and 120 volts, far lower than in most of the rest of the world. Consequently, North American appliances are generally built for 110-120 volts.

An amazing option between Chefchaouen and Fez for any history buff would be a tour of Meknes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Morocco’s Imperial Cities. The impressive monuments here are splendid and were built in the 17th century by the powerful sultan Moulay Ismail, to rival the court of his contemporary Louis XIV of France. During your visit, you’ll marvel at the monumental Bab Mansour gateway – considered one of the finest of the great gates of Morocco. Later, continue to Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to Morocco’s largest and most well-preserved Roman ruins. With its grand arches, basilicas and capitols, the Volubilis is dotted with examples of superb Roman architecture.

Exploring Fez, the cultural heart of Morocco, is an unforgettable experience for any holiday in Morocco. Your tour can be tailored to your experiences, from a journey through the lanes, alleys and souks comprising the labyrinth of the city’s old quarter. Or maybe you would like to delve into the Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site and visit Nejjarine Square, with its exquisite fountain created with mosaics and detailed tilework. No visit to Fez would be complete without the sights and smells of the tanneries that will reveal how the country’s highly esteemed leather is dyed. There is a chance to learn more about how the beautiful Zellij tiles are created and designed or about the manufacturing and history of the famous tagines (earthenware pots in which traditional meals are cooked). You could also take a cooking class, use the tagines for yourself, and be introduced to the fascinating world of Moroccan cooking as an experienced chef coaches you to learn the basics of Moroccan cuisine. Use exotic herbs and spices to create dishes such as Tagine of chicken in preserved lemon sauce or a lamb with almonds and prunes, and then enjoy your creations for lunch.

Leave Fes behind you, travelling towards Ifrane, nicknamed the “Switzerland of Morocco”. Here, you can take a tour or just a panoramic drive through the Middle and Higher Atlas Mountains. Stopping at Azrou, a Berber village in the middle of the famous cedar forest, the largest in Morocco, where you may see Barbarian apes. Afterwards, you’ll travel through the Tizi Ntalghamt pass to Midelt, known for its apple production and archaeological significance.

Sahara Desert

This morning, travel to Erfoud via Errachidia and the Ziz valley, dotted with palm trees, is the source for the yearly date festival. Erfoud, the city, is situated at the gates of Tafilalet. It is known by the name of “Gate of Sahara Desert”. Many films were shot in this area, including “Prince of Persia” & “The Mummy”. Take an optional tour of the region or head straight into the desert by 4X4 over the beautiful dunes of the Sahara Desert to reach your campsite. Why not take a camel ride across the dunes for a breathtaking sunset? Or stay at camp before your traditional dinner is served while local musicians entertain you.

The possibilities are endless on your drive, from the desert and palm trees to flowers and orchards of the valleys. One of the most beautiful routes of Morocco, called “The 1000 Kasbahs Valley”, is up to Tinghir and is a popular option. Tinghir is a former military outpost built on terraces above a magnificent palm grove and gateway to the breathtaking Todra Gorge with its 300 m high cliffs before your eyes as you travel further west. Or you could opt to travel along the “The Valley of the Roses”. Roses were said to be carried here centuries ago by a Berber merchant from Damascus and will be in bloom in April and May. Maybe explore the old and new of Morocco from the Studios where many blockbusters have been filmed to the Kasbahs of old.

If Fes is the cultural heart of Morocco. In that case, Marrakesh is the tourist epicentre, an imperial city that resonates across North Africa and evokes Morocco’s mystery and charm. Marrakech has so much to explore, from the old Medina to the more modern Nouvelle Ville. We can include options such as visiting landmarks such as Bahia Palace, Jardin Majorelle, Koutoubia Mosque, and Jemaa el-Fnaa or you have the choice of including to explore the many galleries or museums with an experienced curator or even learn about the unique blending of spices on a cooking class. Another popular option is to leave the busy city behind you and see the Jardin Majorelle (Majorelle Gardens). Designed by French artist Jacques Majorelle, this garden is a tropical utopia featuring hundreds of plants, tranquil lily-covered pools, and colossal sculptural cacti. At its heart is Majorelle’s cobalt blue-painted studio, now a museum. Wander through this peaceful haven before visiting the Yves Saint Laurent Museum. The renowned fashion designer first visited Marrakech in the 60s, and the museum is dedicated to his fashion and the country that inspired him.

Famously called “Mogador”, one of the loveliest Atlantic coastal towns, famous for its laid-back atmosphere and long sandy beach. Essaouira is a rich source of argan oil, a favourite for its cosmetic and culinary uses. En route to the Atlantic Coast, there is an option to stop at a women’s cooperative to learn how argan oil is produced. Maybe explore the old and new of Morocco from the Studios where many blockbusters have been filmed to the Kasbahs of old.

Travel to El Jadida through Safi. You can choose to visit the Kasbah of Safi, which now houses the National Museum of Ceramics. Or take a leisurely Walk on El Jadida’s weathered ramparts with your guide, taking in the Portuguese style of the winding streets. And if you want to do it yourself, find a café on the shore for a seafood lunch and people watch.

A note on price

The prices outlined above are a rough guide to give you an idea of costs and enable you to budget for your trip.

Guide prices are generally for private arrangements based on twin share, in well located, good quality accommodation (excluding international flights).

Please note costs are indicative and may vary due to a number of factors such as; travel date, hotel choice, room category, number of people travelling and prevailing exchange rates.

Price Guide $6500 – $10,000+ per person

When to travel.

Morocco is a diverse country with a varied climate and weather. In general, the summers are hot and dry, while winters are mild and wet. The coastal regions tend to have cooler temperatures than the interior of the country, and the mountains in the north have cooler temperatures year-round. Rainfall is generally light throughout the year, and snow is rare at lower elevations.

This Grand Tour Morocco itinerary has many add-on holiday options; for example, you could head to the Atlantic coastal city of Agadir, where you can learn to surf or simply relax on the beach. Or, if you want to get away from it all, head further south to Dakhla; this small part of paradise, lost between the waters of the Atlantic and the sands of the Sahara, gives you a complete change of scenery. Kilometres of beaches expand from one side of the town to the other.

Morocco makes a magical add-on to your European holiday, especially from countries such as Spain, France or Portugal, all of which have direct flights. Morocco is also easily accessed by the main flight hubs of Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha, making city stopovers easy to arrange.
