Jungle Cruise 2 - What We Know So Far
Disney has a long history of adapting its theme park rides for the big screen, and its latest, " Jungle Cruise ," is another hit for the House of Mouse. Based on the ride of the same name, the movie stars Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, and Jack Whitehall as explorers who sail deep into the Amazon jungle to find an ancient tree that grows petals with healing capabilities. Naturally, there are some bad people who want the tree's petals for themselves, and they're not above summoning spirits to aid their cause.
"Jungle Cruise" is a pulpy adventure in the vein of "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Indiana Jones," making it the perfect viewing for the summer movie season. And now that the film has passed the $100 million mark (per The Hollywood Reporter ), Disney is officially moving forward with a sequel. But what can viewers expect from "Jungle Cruise 2" when it eventually arrives on their screens?
When will Jungle Cruise 2 be released?
At the time of this writing, a release date for "Jungle Cruise 2" has yet to be confirmed. The movie is in the very early stages of the pre-production process, so viewers will just have to be patient for now. As Radio Times points out, studio blockbusters tend to take around two years to complete, so the sequel could arrive in 2023 at the earliest.
Of course, the production of "Jungle Cruise 2" could be delayed due to the unpredictable nature of the pandemic, as well as the schedules of the film's stars. Dwayne Johnson keeps himself very busy, taking on a lot of roles in tentpole flicks. It remains to be seen if "Jungle Cruise 2" will be his priority now that DC's " Black Adam " has finished shooting. However, chances are he'll want to keep the current "Jungle Cruise" momentum rolling and get the sequel wrapped up while the iron is hot.
Who's in Jungle Cruise 2?
As the "The Hollywood Reporter" notes, Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt are set to reprise their roles as Frank Wolff and Dr. Lily Houghton, respectively, for the next jungle-faring adventure. While his status for the sequel remains unconfirmed, British comedian Jack Whitehall could return as MacGregor, Lily's younger brother who — often against his better judgment — helps his sibling on her dangerous quests. Whitehall is a big name in the U.K, but "Jungle Cruise 2" is an ideal vehicle for continuing to solidify his presence in Hollywood.
While no other casting announcements have been made official at the time of this writing, the first movie did leave the door open to some interesting possibilities. Given that Frank has a history with Aguirre, Édgar Ramírez might be brought back as the ghostly serpentine villain. While the bad guy was turned to stone at the end of the first "Jungle Cruise," Aguirre's backstory with Frank has only been explored briefly, and the film gave us the impression that the former allies have some unfinished business with each other.
Of course, the "Jungle Cruise" ride has a wealth of interesting characters, and the sequel could feature more of them. With that in mind, expect some fresh faces to appear in "Jungle Cruise 2."
What's the plot of Jungle Cruise 2?
Details about the plot for "Jungle Cruise 2" are being kept under wraps for now, but the good news is that the story is in trustworthy hands. Michael Green, who co-wrote the first film, will pen the script for the next installment. Jaume Collet-Serra is reportedly set to return to the director's chair as well.
According to Digital Spy , the sequel could feature a fish-out-of-water story for Frank now that he's been brought out of the jungle and forced to navigate 1920s London. Additionally, "Jungle Cruise 2" could explore MacGregor's story more after he came out as gay in the first film. However, this was only tacitly implied and the word "gay" is never actually said, so perhaps the next movie could be an opportunity to give MacGregor a positive LGBTQ+ love story and spend more time developing his character.
Regardless of the direction "Jungle Cruise 2" goes in, viewers can look forward to another family-friendly adventure that puts the film's heroes in a perilous situation. And with Frank definitely set to play a huge part, he'll undoubtedly have plenty of corny jokes to share along the way.

Jungle Cruise 2 has been confirmed — here's what you need to know about the sequel
Welcome to the jungle (again, again)
Many expected that Jungle Cruise would, like most films of its ilk, have a post-credits scene that teased a potential sequel. However, this Disney movie has proven itself to be the exception to the rule.
Despite the lack of a post-credits tease, Disney has confirmed that a sequel is in the works! Given its performance , it seemed pretty inevitably. What can we expect for Lily, MacGregor, and Skippy — err, we mean Frank — in Jungle Cruise 2 ? We'll tell you, but warning: Jungle Cruise spoilers follow .
Jungle Cruise 2 cast: Will Emily Blunt, Dwayne Johnson, and Jack Whitehall return?
The short answer is yes . Blunt and Johnson will return as Frank the skipper and Dr Lily Houghton. While there's been no official word on Whitehall's return as Lily's brother, given he's already tweeted his excitement for the sequel we imagine this means he's on board (sorry.)
Michael Green, who co-wrote the first film, is set to pen the sequel. It hasn't been confirmed, but we imagine director Jaume Collet-Serra will return (though he's currently busy with Black Adam ), along with the movie's producing team and executive producer.
Jungle Cruise 2 plot: What will Jungle Cruise 2 be about?
While there's plenty of room to explore further stories within the Disney Adventure Theme Park Universe (which is as sprawling as the MCU ), we imagine Jungle Cruise 2 will keep its focus on the trio that made the first film a success.
Lily's goal was to research the healing properties of the flower she acquired during the first film, so the sequel could be another MacGuffin chase for the next phase of her research. What we'd love to see though, is a fish out of water story about Frank, a man who hadn't left the Amazon River since the 1500s, in London in the 1920s.
Another storyline we'd want to see explored is McGregor's. The character is (arguably) Disney's first explicitly gay character — despite the fact that his coming out moment never includes the word 'gay' — and a sequel would be a great chance for Disney to explore a potential romance for him.
Of course, they could go the Pirates route and reveal that Aguirre, the film's big bad and another conquistador, isn't actually turned to stone at the end — or somehow he's revived and freed of the curse like Frank was — and seeks his revenge on Frank, Lily, and MacGregor.
Jungle Cruise 2 would likely take place in the intervening years between the first and second World Wars, but we highly doubt Disney will go the full Indiana Jones Nazi baddie route, especially given they've already had a German baddie in the first film. This is all speculation for now, but you can be sure that whatever updates Johnson throws our way, we'll be all over.
Jungle Cruise 2 release date: When will the sequel be out?
Given the sequel was only just announced, and Blunt and Johnson are already working on another film together , we're likely going to be waiting a while. This also means it's going to be quite a wait for a trailer.
Jungle Cruise is out in UK and US cinemas now and on Disney+ Premier Access.

Critic Reviews for Jungle Cruise
Audience reviews for jungle cruise.
Silly but enjoyable. Sort of dual remake of both "The Mummy" (1999) and the first "Pirates of the Caribbean".
Disney film that is enough to watch with the family and friends, but offers little return value. Between all the remakes of animated classics, Disney lacks a focus on new and fresh ideas. Jungle Cruise may not be the step in the right direction but it demonstrates they are still willing to take a risk. Blunt is well cast and she is rarely miscast, but it's Johnson who feels out of his element. The film is a mess of special effects mixed together with Pirates of the Caribbean. It's an odd choice the filmmaker and writers made for this mega budgeted film. I just don't understand why they make these films so massive and risk not turning a profit. This should've been a more character focused film with a splash of big adventure. I have heard they are planning a sequel, but I thought they closed this off well enough to avoid a sequel.
A great adventure film and while it is reminiscent of Indiana Jones and the Mummy, it has some original twists and the humor makes the film. Blunt and Johnson are great and Plemmons looks like he is seventh heaven chewing up the scenery!. Well Directed and written. Enjoyable from beginning to end. 09-06-2021
Disney turned a theme park ride that mostly involved sitting into a billion-dollar supernatural adventure franchise, so why not try another swing at reshaping its existing park properties into would-be blockbuster tentpoles? Jungle Cruise owes a lot to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and actually owes a little too much for its own good. For the first half of the movie, it coasts on the charms of stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt and some light-footed visual misadventures. Then the second half turn involves a significant personal revelation, and that's where the movie felt like it was being folded and crushed into form to closely resemble the Pirates franchise. It gets quite convoluted and littered with lackluster villains, too many and too stock to ever establish as intriguing or memorable (one of them is a man made of honey, so that's a thing). I found myself also pulling away in the second half because of the inevitable romance. Their screwball combative banter between Johnson and Blunt gave me some smiles and entertainment and then, as they warm to one another, it sadly dissipated, as did my interest. The comedy is really labored at points. Johnson keeps referring to Blunt as "Pants" because she's a woman and she wears pants in the twentieth century. It was not funny the first time and it's not funny or endearing after the 80th rendition. The supernatural elements and curses feel extraneous and tacked on. With the Pirates films, at least the good ones, there are a lot of plot elements they need to keep in the air and you assume they're be able to land them as needed. The competing character goals were so well established and developed in those movies and served as an anchor even amid the chaos of plot complications and double and triple crosses. With Jungle Cruise, it feels like a lot of effort but also a lot of dropped or mishandled story and thematic elements. This feels more creatively by committee and the heavily green screen action is harder to fully immerse with. As a wacky adventure serial, there may be enough to keep a viewer casually entertained, but Jungle Cruise feels too beholden to the Pirates formula without bringing anything exciting or fresh on its own imagination merits. Dwayne Johnson And Emily Blunt Have A New Movie, But What’s Happening With Jungle Cruise 2? The Latest From The Rock
Any updates are appreciated, really.
If you’ve been hoping to see recent Oscar-nominee Emily Blunt and Dwayne “ The Rock ” Johnson pair up on screen again, we now know that your hopes will be fulfilled soon, as the duo is planning to film the upcoming A24 movie , The Smashing Machine in the near future (which led Johnson to post a sweet comment for Blunt ). However, that film is a far different one from the comedic action adventure that originally brought them together, 2021’s Disney hit, Jungle Cruise . While a sequel to that popular movie was announced a little over a month after its release , we’ve heard very little about it for years. Now, The Rock has shared the latest news on the potential sequel.
What Did The Rock Say About Possibly Working With Emily Blunt For Jungle Cruise 2?
While fans had to wait longer than expected for the Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt-starring film based on an ever-popular Disney theme park ride, once it finally hit theaters movie-goers ate up the thrilling, banter-filled chemistry that the actors brought to the comedy as Captain Frank Wolff and Dr. Lily Houghton. Though the leads will be back on screen in relatively short order, it won’t be to reprise their beloved characters in Jungle Cruise 2 , but The Rock gave everyone an update when speaking with Variety recently, noting:
Possibly. Down the line, yeah, I’d wanna do it. Maybe, we’ll see.
Alright, I know what you’re thinking, because that is hardly the enthusiastic response that those who adored the first film were likely hoping for. But, I happen to think that it still sets us up for some good news down the line, as the interest from the wrestler turned actor is there, and it’s also clear from his next project with The Fall Guy star that he enjoys working with her.
The reality of the movie business is that even if everyone involved wants something to happen, if all the (dozens if not hundreds of) pieces don’t fall into place quickly it becomes a real waiting game, especially because major stars like Johnson and Blunt easily fill their schedules up very quickly.
The Smashing Machine: Everything We Know About Dwayne Johnson's A24 Movie
Producer Hiram Garcia revealed when the sequel was announced that the team who worked on the first movie was already hard at work “cracking the story” for the new film and noted that the stars had “brilliant ideas” about what they wanted to see next from their characters. He also said that they all have “much bigger plans” for JC2 that will see “our heroes covering more territory” than just the Amazon and London, and we’ll get to see how Frank and Lily’s relationship develops.
As we hope for more solid updates on Jungle Cruise 2 , whenever they may finally come, at least we know we’ll get to see Johnson and Blunt star together in The Smashing Machine sooner rather than later.

Dwayne Johnson Talks Reteaming with 'One of the Greatest Actresses' for a Possible Jungle Cruise 2
Dwayne Johnson praises Emily Blunt as "one of the greatest actresses ever" and discusses their films The Smashing Machine and (maybe) Jungle Cruise 2.
- Dwayne Johnson is down to make a Jungle Cruise sequel in the future.
- Johnson and his Jungle Cruise co-star, Emily Blunt, will work together again in the MMA biopic titled The Smashing Machine.
- Johnson and Blunt discuss The Rock's attempt to woo the actress to take their Jungle Cruise, which fared fairly well at the box office in 2021 despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Emily Blunt are joining forces again, but not for Jungle Cruise 2 ... at least, not yet. While attending the 96th Academy Awards, Johnson revealed that he will be working with his Jungle Cruise co-star on an MMA-related biopic, The Smashing Game , next. However, Johnson would like to see Frank Wolff, aka Francisco Lopez de Heredia, set sail again with Dr. Lily Houghton. Johnson responded to a question about making a follow-up to the 2021 Disney film in an interview with Variety :
Possibly. Down the line, yeah, I’d wanna do it. Maybe, we’ll see.
When Johnson was asked about teaming up again with his Jungle Cruise co-star for The Smashing Machine , the actor said in the same interview:
“I can’t wait. We’re shooting The Smashing Machine. Benny Safdie is writing and directing it. It’s a biopic about one of the godfathers of MMA who struggled with addiction. He struggled with love, he struggled with success, struggled with loss. And Emily, one of my best friends, and one of the greatest actresses ever, is obviously nominated tonight. I’m very happy for her and all her ‘Oppenhomies.' And, it’s with A24 and we’ll shoot that next. I can’t wait."
Johnson added:
“It’s much different than what we did with ‘Jungle Cruise,’ but I got to tell you there is no greater partner in our industry than Emily who I would want to have to rip this thing open. So, you know, she was filming with Benny Safdie on Oppenheimer a few years ago, and they were talking about The Smashing Machine, we were talking about it back then. So, this is a long time coming, man.”

Producer Hiram Garcia said Jungle Cruise 2 would be a worldwide adventure , but nearly three years after the original film hit theaters, the sequel’s ship has yet to set sail. And while promoting the Disney flick back in 2021, Dwayne Johnson revealed that his creative and charming ways of trying to woo Emily Blunt — The Rock shot a video for the actress to watch — to join the big-screen adventure were “ghosted.” Johnson said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter :
“I had always admired her as an actor, but also when I would watch her on talk shows, she had this personality that was effervescent, that was cool and very, very charming […] I must have shot it about five or six times because I had not communicated with Emily yet. I had not even met her. And I wanted to let her know via this video just how important she was to this movie and how I only wanted her in this movie. And it was great. And I… I actually never heard again from Emily. Didn’t respond at all. Just ghosted me.”
8 Things You Didn't Know About the Cast of Jungle Cruise
While the acting duo was doing press together, Johnson and Blunt's chemistry and sense of humor clearly shined through. And Blunt hilariously addressed the video Johnson made to try and convince the actress to join him on their eventual Jungle Cruise . Blunt said in an interview that she did with Johnson for Lorraine :
“Listen, I didn’t want you to know that I was in at that point, okay? I was playing that game: a little cat and mouse. But no, it was the most touching video. It was beautiful, absolutely beautiful. It was an overture. I felt very flattered and then a little bit scared for my life, because it was stalkerish [Johnson laughs].”
Johnson and Blunt's team-up led to Jungle Cruise making $221 million worldwide in a box office climate still reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic. And even though a Jungle Cruise sequel was announced back in 2021 , at the time of this writing, there’s not an official release date attached to the project.

Jungle cruise expedition mode, featurettes, it’s a jungle out there: making jungle cruise, dwayne and emily: undoubtedly funny, creating the amazon, once a skip, always a skip, deleted scenes, macgregor drives the boat, macgregor water skis, joachim and nilo on the dock, frank talks to proxima & lily's nightmares, sub gets stuck, proxima surprises macgregor, frank gets the cold shoulder, trader sam and lily walk in the jungle, macgregor and trader sam say goodbye, frank makes tea for lily, the backside of water, rotten tomatoes® score.
I think we would all agree to hop in a boat with these two as they take us on an adventure.
The SUMMER ADVENTURE you all need to go on! With vibes from Raiders of the Lost Ark to Pirates of the Caribbean! this movie will bring a smile to your face the entire cruise.
Sometimes movies should exist to be entertainment, purely and simply. Jungle Cruise should have been that, and it’s a shame there was not enough charisma to keep it afloat.
Jungle Cruise is exactly what it makes itself out to be: a big-name summer blockbuster...
A family adventure through familiar, albeit shallow, waters.
Any minor quibbles are outshone by the star power wattage generated by Johnson and Blunt. If Johnson is still the Most Electrifying Man In Entertainment, then Emily Blunt is a superconductor.
Book your trip on Jungle Cruise now. It’s a first-class ticket.
JUNGLE CRUISE (the movie) was based on "Jungle Cruise", a Disneyland ride, so I wasn't expecting much, and was definitely pleasantly surprised. All in all, this is a fun movie.
The script (from the trio of Michael Green, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa) is silly and light-hearted, reminiscent of the late-1960’s pulp you would find at a Saturday afternoon matinee.
Inspired, too inspired, on its titular Disney attraction ride. Dwayne Johnson is practically the attraction's tour guide. [Full review in Spanish]

Dwayne Johnson got emotional talking about a potential on-screen reunion with Emily Blunt in Benny Safdie’s upcoming mixed martial arts drama, “The Smashing Machine.” Johnson’s comments came while speaking with Variety’s Marc Malkin at the Oscars during Variety On the Carpet presented by DIRECTV.
Blunt has been in talks to join Johnson for what will be Safdie’s solo directorial debut — a biopic about MMA and UFC champion Mark Kerr. Blunt has been eyed to play Dawn Staples, Kerr’s wife.
“It’s much different than what we did with ‘Jungle Cruise,’ but I got to tell you there is no greater partner in our industry than Emily who I would want to have to rip this thing open. This is a long time coming, man,” Johnson said. “It’s with A24 and we’ll shoot that next. I can’t wait.”
Further speaking about Blunt, who was nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actress for her performance as Kitty Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” Johnson added, “Emily, one of my best friends and one of the greatest actresses ever, is obviously nominated tonight. I’m very happy for her and all her ‘Oppenhomies.'”
But Johnson wasn’t done talking about potential future collaborations with Blunt. When asked about the possibility of donning his ascot and suspenders again for a sequel to “Jungle Cruise,” Johnson responded, “Possibly. Down the line, yeah, I’d wanna do it. Maybe, we’ll see.” A sequel was announced to be in development roughly one month after the film came out in 2021, but there has been little disclosed about the project since then.

Jungle Cruise 2 gets uncertain update from Dwayne Johnson
Dwayne Johnson spoke about a potential Jungle Cruise 2 with Emily Blunt. Although, if it happens, it won’t be for a while.
Speaking to Variety, Johnson seemed somewhat optimistic about a sequel.
“Possibly. Down the line, yeah, I’d wanna do it,” Johnson said. “Maybe, we’ll see.”
Before then, Johnson and Blunt will team up again in The Smashing Machine for A24. The Mark Kerr biopic is being directed by Benny Safdie (Uncut Gems). Blunt will also star in The Fall Guy and If coming up. She is known for her roles in the Quiet Place series and Mary Poppins Returns.
Jungle Cruise
Jungle Cruise was a 2021 adventure film released by Disney . Jaume Collet-Serra directed the film based on a screenplay from Michael Green, Glenn Ficarra, and John Requa. The film is based on Walt Disney’s theme park ride of the same name.
It follows Frank Woff (Dwayne Johnson) and Dr. Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt) who take a small riverboat to search for the Tree of Life. They are also racing against a German expedition and other competitors. Édgar Ramírez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons, and Paul Giamatti also starred in the film with Johnson and Blunt.
Jungle Cruise wasn’t the hit that Disney hoped for at the box office. It was released during the pandemic, so the film was available in theaters and Disney+ (with Premiere Access for $29.99) simultaneously. At the box office, the film grossed $220 million worldwide. It opened to $35 million domestically before legging out to $116 million domestically.
Still, it does seem that a Jungle Cruise 2 is coming.
