Kris Kristofferson’s Kindness Remembered After Sinead O’Connor’s Death

At the end of July, the music industry lost one of the most talented singers when Sinead O’Connor died suddenly. O’Connor’s legacy is somewhat complicated, as she was basically shunned and shamed after tearing up a picture of Pope John Paul II during an appearance on Saturday Night Live.

Prior to the 1992 stunt, she was acclaimed for her stunning cover of the Prince song “Nothing Compares 2 U.” However, the general public soured on her after her SNL appearance. She continued to release music, including singing the theme song for Season 7 of  Outlander , but never quite overcame the scandal.

After she passed away, fans flocked to social media to express their sorrow. Many people made comments that O’Connor was right to rip the photo of the Pope after what has come to light regarding abuse within the church.

Another thing that was brought up by multiple people is the kindness Kris Kristofferson showed the singer. Days after her appearance on SNL, Sinead O’Connor was set to perform at the Bob Dylan tribute to celebrate his 30th anniversary as a recording artist.

However, she was booed by the crowd. Kristofferson comforted her and later wrote the song “Sister Sinead” in her honor, referring to her as the “bald-headed brave little girl.” The song was a track on his Closer to the Bone acoustic album.

The cause of Sinead O’Connor’s death is still under investigation, though officials don’t suspect foul play.

Health Struggles: Alzheimer’s Or Lyme Disease?

Rolling Stone did a feature on the member of the country supergroup, The Highwaymen. The magazine spoke to Krisofferson’s wife, Lisa Kristofferson, about the famous songwriter. Even then, the “Loving Her Was Easy” singer was suffering from memory loss.

According to his wife, the doctor initially told them that he was suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia. Furthermore, doctors believed playing contact sports in his younger years contributed to his memory loss.

However, after years of taking medication for Alzheimer’s, Kristofferson was tested for Lyme disease. The test came back positive, and his wife thinks he contracted the disease from a tick in the woods of Vermont while filming the movie Disappearances. According to WebMD , memory and concentration problems are a symptom of Lyme disease.

In the 2016 piece by Rolling Stone, his wife shared that he was doing better. But now it seems his health is declining again.

One of the last photos on Kris Kristofferson’s official Instagram is a snapshot with country singer Garth Brooks . In the photo, Kristofferson looks every bit of 87, noticeably thinner and frail.

In a shocking new report, Radar Online reveals that sources close to the singer claim Kris Kristofferson is nearing his “final days.”

According to the outlet, the  A Star Is Born actor’s 550-acre California ranch is on the market for $17.2 million. Kristofferson and his third wife, Lisa, live at another home in Hawaii. Insiders shared that Kristofferson wants to convert his assets to cash to “make it easier” on his family.

At the time of the reporting, Radar Online was waiting for a comment from Kris Krisofferson’s rep, so there’s hope that the inside sources are wrong about Kristofferson nearing his final days.

Former soldier turned singer, songwriter, actor and country musician Kris Kristofferson (born 22 June 1936) from Texas, US has brought us hits such as “Why Me”, “Josie” and “I May Smoke Too Much”.

With an avid interest for literature and his eyes set on becoming a novelist, Kristofferson studied at Pomona College, California, US where he gained his Bachelor of Arts. He was later offered a scholarship to the prestigious Oxford University, England and it was here that Kristofferson really developed an interest in songwriting. Under the direction of then manager Larry Parnes who insisted that he professionally be known as Kris Carson as he attempted to pursue a solo career marketed as an American at Oxford. With no avail, once achieving his BPhil in English Literature, Kristofferson returned by to his family.

Born into a military family and his career plan set out by his father, Kristofferson joined the army in 1960. Deployed in West Germany during his time of service, his love for music was reignited as he formed a band with a few of his fellow comrades. After five years of service he decided to leave the army and although offered a dream job as an English Literature teacher, Kristofferson kindly refused as he took pursuit of his other dream career.

Moving to the home of country, Nashville, US in 1965 and medical expenses to cover, Kristofferson took up a few odd jobs including a helicopter pilot and a cleaner at Columbia Recording Studios. During his time at Columbia, he met country legend Johnny Cash and shared some of his original material. With Cash declining the offer to use Kristofferson’s material, one day he landed his helicopter in Cash’s garden dropping off some of his demos. Impressed by the ingenious feat, Kristofferson signed with Monument Records in 1969. And the rest really is history.

Releasing his debut album “Kristofferson” in 1970 which after being re-released the following year under the title “Me & Bobby McGee” proved to be a huge success not only for his music but also for his composition. In high demand, Kristofferson lent his hand to the likes of: Johnny Cash, Sammi Smith and Ray Price. With 17 studio albums spanning across six decades with signature hits “Watch Closely Now” (a duet with Barbra Streisand), “Nobody Loves Anybody Anymore” and “They Killed Him”, Kristofferson continues his legacy as inducted into the Nashville Country Hall of Fame and his work remains an inspiration as recognised by his inclusion into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame.

Kris Kristofferson was undoubtedly one of the best live performances I have ever had the pleasure to see. Seriously, the man has written almost every classic country song that you have heard, artists stand in line to have him write a song for them and seeing him live you can understand why. How can one man, alone on a stage with a microphone, a guitar, a harmonica and the most incredibly raspy familiar voice hold an audience captive for more than two hours! Quite easily when you are Kris, he enthralled the audience, he was there for the music, he would announce the song, a bit of history about it and dive straight into singing, song after song. He was tireless and gave the audience every song they could have wanted to hear. He sang 'lay your head upon my pillow' and one of his fans shouted 'anytime Kris, anytime' to which he chuckled, shook his head and carried on singing. Best of all, there in the dark, it took me straight back to my childhood, sleeping in the back of the car with my brother while my dad drove us through the night from our mom's in Saskatchewan to his place in Alberta every holiday. Kris's voice lulling us to sleep, making up the background of my childhood memories... Sitting in that theater I closed my eyes and he transported me back in time, the only thing missing was my Dad & my brother sitting beside me!

This show was everything it could have been and more. Mr. Kristofferson delivered what can only be described as a tribute straight from his heart to a life he feels blessed to have lived. Every eye in the room was fixated on this man as he took us from his younger days as a tortured struggling poet/songwriter to a present day more relaxed and wiser version of himself.

Paying tribute to his loves lost and won, his children and his lessons learned, Mr Kristofferson had his audience hanging on his every word and shaking their heads as slowly each realized that they were in the presence of a legend. He delivered each song with his truth firmly attached, his voice cracking at all the right moments with a laugh and twinkle in his eye that let the audience know that this man is the real deal! He must of played over twenty songs standing on the stage alone with only his quitar and harmonica ( or lack there off). The venue was bursting with love for this incredibly gifted and authentic human being and the respect he showed in return was humbling. Truly a night to remember.

Kris did about an hour and a half last night at the Pikes Peak Center. It was wonderful... just Kris and his guitar. The audience was incredibly respectful of the 81 yr old singer/ songwriter, offering up enthusiastic applause and yelps after each song. During each rendition, everyone hanging on every lyric, you could have heard a pin drop....it was a bit surreal and awe inspiring. Kris's voice is getting a bit croaky but if I could go again tonight I would. It was almost spiritual.... the way the crowd behaved. Don't bother bringing any albums for him to sign... he did not do the expected photo/ signing op we've gotten used to in smaller venues.

Enjoyed Sunday night at the opera house Manchester, he sang most of his early songs, sad to see he is showing his age not a lot of movement or harmonica playing and his usual ad libs but he is 83 this week. His choice to finish the evening with, 'Please don't tell me how the story ends was poignant especially with the words 'this may be our last goodnight together we may never pass this way again'

then the final wave as he left the stage. It was like he was trying to tell us something I hope I am wrong.

I went to Agoura Hills, California on Jan 13 to hear Kris Kristofferson perform at The Canyon Club. It was a fabulous show. He played all the old favourites and some of his latest work. He was accompanied by the Merle Haggard Band. Kris's voice was familiar and strong. I say familiar because it sounded like the Kris I have been listening to for 40 years. I planned a vacation from Canada just to hear him. I was not disappointed. I thought it would quell my need to see him in person but I think it only re-ignited the flame. Saw Kris Kristofferson in concert twice within a couple of weeks in Oklahoma! Once in Tulsa at the Brady Theater Nov. 5, 2019 & again in Hinton at the Sugar Creek Casino on Nov. 22, 2019!! He is AWESOME!!! I LOVE this man!! I would go to every concert if he'd come to Oklahoma more often & I knew about it enough ahead of time to get tickets!! I have been a fan since the 1970's!! I would LOVE to get VIP tickets & meet him!! He still looks good, Sexy, & love to listen to him sing!! Love that voice!! Love those eyes!! LOVE this man!!! :)

What an amazing performance! This is the second time we have seen Mr. Kristofferson in concert and we think this show was just as wonderful. Kris delivered on every song and was very funny. He was very personable with the audience, waving and thumbs up when they hooted or yelled. We were literally about 5 feet from him and our seats were fantastic. He is such a marvelous song writer and according to him, he is not a singer, but he sounded so good last night.

We would go see him again and again.

Was a Fantastic Show...He could have sang more of his songs...And did less of Merle Haggard's songs granted it was only maybe 4...Also at the end of the show about 4 ladies wanted to hand him some Rose's...Instead of the one band member rushing him off the stage should have let him get them like HE WANTED TO DO....1 More thing I was a bit disappointed that no tour shirts or hats for sale at this show...That being said I would VERY HIGHLY RECOMMEND Going to see him if you have the chance.

Saw Kris Kristofferson once in my life after listening to him every Sunday for the past 20 years I saw him with Merle Haggard in Houston Texas but I have a Sunday ritual that I do that starts out with a beer of course and then Sunday morning coming down with my second beer for dessert he put on a great show in Houston Texas along with Merle Haggard just wish she could’ve sung all night long like he probably used to do in his younger days love you Kris

It was a great show My daughter and I went for a mothers day weekend time well spent greatest mothers day gift ever his performance was great just as good as ever loved his stories would love to just set down and talk to him. I bet he has stories still left to yelp.I will be going again when he comes back close to me. The man still has it. I think he has written almost every country song out there. Love hon

Whatever Happened To Country Star Kris Kristofferson?

Kris Kristofferson spent the latter part of the 20th century as a household name, touring the U.S. and appearing in countless films. But around 2004, during the third decade of his career, the country singer and acto r reportedly started experiencing a serious decline in his health. His memory was worsening, which eventually resulted in a diagnosis of possible dementia or Alzheimer's. Nearly a decade later, the "A Star is Born" actor spoke about his condition to Fox News , saying, "They tell me its from all the football and boxing and the concussions that I got." He also added that he was satisfied with all that he had accomplished over his career.

Despite continuing to work through his declining health, over the 2010s, Kristofferson gradually performed less both on stage and in front of the camera. His last acting credit was 2018's "Blaze. Meanwhile, he quietly retired from music in 2020, but the fact was not revealed until a press release in 2021 announced that his son, John Kristofferson, would be handling the estate of his music catalogue. Many fans were surprised that the singer retired without any fanfare. However, according to his long-time manager, Tamara Saviano, the singer's career came to an "organic" end. "Kris is aging; Kris is 84. It didn't feel like such big news to us," Saviano told Variety in 2021 after news of his retirement was made public. "It doesn't feel like a retirement because Kris' music isn't going anywhere. But he's not going to be on the road anymore," she added.

Fortunately, the actor's health would take a turn for the better after learning his Alzheimer's had been misdiagnosed. Speaking to LymeTimes in 2016, Kristofferson's wife, Lisa Meyers, revealed that in February of that year, Kristofferson had tested for and received a positive result for Lyme Disease. The news came as a shock because the actor had been taking medication to manage Alzheimer's. "About 12 years ago he was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, which looking back, should have been the first indication that a test for Lyme was warranted," she told the outlet. They believed Kristofferson contracted the illness while working on the film "Disappearances" in 2002. 

Once doctors were able to properly diagnose the "When I Loved Her" singer, they were able to correct his treatment, which led to a massive improvement in his cognitive abilities. Those close to Kristofferson noticed a drastic change in his memory once he received proper treatment. "It's like Lazarus coming out of the grave and being born again," country singer, and long-time friend of Kristofferson, Chris Gantry told Closer Weekly in 2016. "For the past six or seven years, there was this slow realization that he was becoming forgetful," Gantry added. Even with his health improvement, Kristofferson decided to step away from the limelight as he grew older.

Following his official retirement, Kris Kristofferson had a plan for how he wanted to live out his remaining years. The aging singer retired to his home in Hawaii. "I spend most of my time on my tractor, mowing the grass around there," he said to  OK! in April 2023. "That's my therapy. No one can mess with me on the tractor." The "Heaven's Gate" actor also added that he started preparing for the end of his life, and even chose the words for his epitaph: "Like a bird on the wire Like a drunk in a midnight choir I have tried in my way to be free."

Along those same lines, Kristofferson reportedly started to liquidate his assets. He put his 550-acre California ranch up for sale in September for $17.2 million. "Kris didn't feel he was up to touring anymore," a source told Radar at the time. "Now, he just wants to make things easier for his family by turning his holdings into cash that will go to them when he's gone."

Even though Kristofferson has sort of nestled into retirement, he's made it clear he's not through with performing. During an event to celebrate Willie Nelson turning 90-years-old in April 2023 he hit the stage and performed his song "Lovin' Her Was Easier (than Anything I'll Ever Do Again)" as a duet with Roseanne Cash, the daughter of Johnny Cash. Although there are no plans to tour anytime soon, fans can be assured that the star still has room for music.

Kris Kristofferson Says He’s Retired. Watch His Final Concert

Kris Kristofferson quietly announced his retirement on Wednesday via a clause buried in a press release detailing the future management of the songwriter’s estate. “In addition, in the wake of his father’s retirement in 2020,” it read, “Kristofferson’s son John steps in to oversee all of the family’s business.” Kristofferson’s spokesperson confirmed the Country Music Hall of Fame member’s retirement from touring, recording, and acting to Rolling Stone .

While few artists of Kristofferson’s caliber have been publicly working since the pandemic took hold in early 2020, the country music poet had remained busy up until February of last year, touring solo and with members of Merle Haggard’s band the Strangers. Kristofferson gave his last full concert on January 30th aboard the fifth annual Outlaw Country Cruise, a performance attended by Rolling Stone .

Along with ubiquitous classics like “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” “Me and Bobby McGee,” and “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,” the then-83-year-old Kristofferson dug into various eras of his back catalog. He offered a stark reading of “Darby’s Castle” off his 1970 debut LP, took stock of his existence in the title track to 2013’s Feeling Mortal , and played 1971’s self-referential “The Pilgrim Chapter 33” (“ He’s a walkin’ contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction “). Kristofferson closed the show, held in the Norwegian Pearl’s at-capacity theater, the Stardust, with “Please Don’t Tell Me How the Story Ends.”

Kristofferson was also the focus of an onboard all-star tribute concert from writers he’s influenced, including Lucinda Williams, Shooter Jennings, and Steve Earle, capped by a sing-along to “Why Me” with Kristofferson. ( Listen to the show on SiriusXM.)

The news of Kristofferson’s official retirement arrives with the announcement that Morris Higham Management will represent the Kris Kristofferson estate. According to the release, a series of “special projects” will help mark Kristofferson’s 85th birthday this June.

Kristoffer Kristofferson was born in Brownsville, Texas, to Lars Henry Kristofferson (1905-1988), a U.S. Army Air Corps officer (and later a career military man), and Mary Ann (née Ashbrook) (1908-1997), a secretary. His paternal grandparents emigrated from Sweden, while his maternal grandparents were of English ancestry. Kristofferson has an older sister, Judy, and a younger brother, John. He attended San Mateo High School in San Mateo, California, and graduated from Pomona College in Claremont, California with a B.A. in literature.

After graduating, Kristofferson joined the U.S. Army, serving in West Germany as a helicopter pilot during the early 1960s.  He was discharged in 1965.

Personal Life

Kristofferson was married to his first wife, Fran Beirne (m. 1961–1969), from 1961 until their divorce in 1969. In 1973, Kristofferson married Rita Coolidge, with whom he collaborated on a number of songs. The couple divorced in 1980. In 1983, Kristofferson married Lisa Meyers.

Kristofferson has had several health issues in recent years. In 2004, it was revealed that he was suffering from Lyme disease, which he contracted in 2002.

After his discharge from the Army, Kristofferson moved to Nashville, where he worked as a janitor and a security guard at the Columbia Recording Studios, and also as a commercial helicopter pilot. He began to focus on his songwriting, and in 1967 had his first major hit with “Me and Bobby McGee”, which was recorded by Janis Joplin. Kristofferson’s success as a songwriter continued through the 1970s, as he wrote such hits as “Help Me Make It Through the Night”, “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down”, and “For the Good Times”.

In 1971, Kristofferson made his acting debut in the film The Last Movie. He went on to star in several more films throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including A Star Is Born (1976), Heaven’s Gate (1980), and Blade (1998). Kristofferson also continued to write and record music throughout his career, releasing more than 30 albums. His work as a recording artist and songwriter earned him several Grammy Awards, including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.

Kris Kristofferson’s life is unprecedented, and won’t be replicated.

Born Kristoffer Kristofferson in the border town of Brownsville, Texas on June 22, 1936, Kristofferson changed the language of country music, with extraordinary internal rhymes, Shakespearean iambic pentameter, and socially progressive subject matters that found the personal within the political.

He was an Oxford scholar, a defensive back, a bartender, a Golden Gloves boxer, a gandy dancer, a forest-fighter, a road crew member, and an Army Ranger who flew helicopters. He was a peacenik, a revolutionary, an actor, a superstar, a Casanova, and a family man. He was almost a teacher at West Point, though he gave that up to become a Nashville songwriting bum.

Sam Peckinpah cast him as Billy the Kid. Willie Nelson recorded an entire album of his songs, then joined him in supergroup The Highwaymen, with Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. Muhammad Ali sat side-stage at his concerts. Mama Cass Elliot called him “No Eyes.” Atlantic Monthly published his short stories.

He believed that songwriting is a spiritual communion of mind, body, and soul, and he believed that William Blake was correct in asserting that anyone divinely ordered for spiritual communion but buries his talent will be pursued by sorrow and desperation through life and by shame and confusion for eternity.

“(Blake) is telling you that you’ll be miserable if you don’t do what you’re supposed to do,” Kristofferson said in the Ken Burns’ documentary Country Music .

Kristofferson’s devotion to spiritual communion brought much in the way of sorrow, desperation, and misery, but it led to triumph.

By the 1960s, most prominent country musicians viewed music as a way out of poverty and struggle. A child of privilege, Kristofferson was among the first (if not the first) country music stars to remove the silver spoon from his mouth and seek an artistic destination.

His work ethic was evident from an early age, celebrated by his parents and, when he was a teenager, the supervisor who told him he was the best worker on a construction crew.

“I took pride in being the best labor or, the guy that could dig the ditches the fastest,” he said. “Something inside me made me want to do the tough stuff . . . Part of it was that I wanted to be a writer, and I figured that I had to get out and live. I know that’s why I ran in front of the bulls in Pamplona.”

The son of a major general and a social-minded mother, Kristofferson spent his childhood learning lessons in honor and civility, though he arrived at different notions of these things than did his parents. He graduated high school in San Mateo, California, in 1954, then attended Pomona College, where he played football (“I was pretty slow, but I was small,” he said) and studied writing under Dr. Frederick Sontag, who pushed him to apply for a Rhodes scholarship. At Oxford, he wrote stories and examined the works of William Blake.

Kristofferson earned his master’s from Oxford in 1960, then returned to California, married his high school sweetheart, joined the Army, and learned to fly helicopters. In the Army, he wrote funny songs inspired by Hank Williams, until he fell under the sway of folk maestro Bob Dylan.

“The direction Dylan was pointing in made it a respectable ambition, a respectable thing to do,” Kristofferson said.

The Army assigned Kristofferson to teach literature at West Point, a duty that frightened him once he found that he’d have to turn in lesson plans, explaining to superiors exactly what he’d be teaching in class. He said, “It sounded like hell to me.”

And so, in 1965, he came to Nashville to visit with Marijohn Wilkin, the songwriter of “Long Black Veil” and a relation of Kristofferson’s Army platoon leader. On Kristofferson’s first Nashville night, he met Cowboy Jack Clement, a renegade creative who would become a lifelong friend. Soon after that, Wilkin helped Kristofferson get a backstage pass to the Grand Ole Opry, where he met a pacing panther named Johnny Cash. In less than two Music City weeks, Kristofferson decided to resign his Army post and move to Nashville to write songs. Soon after, he met successful songwriter Tom T. Hall in a Nashville bar. Kristofferson introduced himself to Hall, who said “Good to see you . . . It’s a hairy-legged town.”

Kristofferson scuffled for more than four years in Nashville, entering his 30s as what his parents considered a ne’er do well who was dragging down the family name. He worked as a janitor at CBS’s Nashville studio, happy to empty trash cans and make coffee in exchange for access to recording sessions by Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and others. He rode around on a well-bruised Honda motorcycle, and neglected family matters in ways that came to haunt him and that doomed his first marriage. He was heartened by praise from the people whom he hoped would become peers. When his “From the Bottle to the Bottom” was recorded by Grand Ole Opry star Billy Walker in 1969, Tom T. Hall said, “God, that’s a great song” and quoted lines back to the fledgling talent.

“That kind of thing was enough to keep me going back then,” Kristofferson said.

After more than four years in songwriting purgatory, things began to roll Kristofferson’s way. Ray Stevens recorded his “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,” and Johnny Cash recorded the same song and took it to the top of the country charts. Cash performed “Sunday Mornin’” on his ABC television show, and, despite the cries of network censors, refused to change Kristofferson’s line “Wishing, Lord, that I was stoned” to “Wishing, Lord that I was home.” That song was voted the Country Music Association’s song of the year in 1970.

Roger Miller, one of Kristofferson’s songwriting heroes, recorded “Me and Bobby McGee,” a song inspired by publisher and Monument Records boss Fred Foster’s suggestion that a song should be written about Foster’s secretary, Bobby McKee. And Kristofferson’s “For the Good Times” was recorded by the great Ray Price and became a #1 country hit.

After arguing with Foster about his validity as a recording artist (Kristofferson said, “I sing like a fucking frog,” to which Foster replied, “Yes, but like a frog that can communicate.”), Kristofferson’s first solo album came out in April of 1970. It contained now-classics including “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,” “Me and Bobby McGee,” “To Beat the Devil,” “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” “Just the Other Side of Nowhere,” “Darby’s Castle,” and “Best of All Possible Worlds.” It began with “Blame It On the Stones,” a song that opened with the decidedly non-traditional line, “Mr. Marvin Middle Class is really in a stew/ Wonderin’ what the younger generation’s coming to.”

With that debut album, Kristofferson emerged as a luminous figure whose fame expanded far beyond country music. Janis Joplin recorded “Me and Bobby McGee,” which became her signature hit. And Kristofferson became a counter-culture darling, beloved by artists and listeners who had never before paid attention to country music.

“You can look at Nashville pre-Kris and post-Kris, because he changed everything,” said Bob Dylan.

Kristofferson’s second album, The Silver Tongued Devil and I , came out on Monument Records in 1971 and contained “The Pilgrim – Chapter 33,” a song he claimed to write about friends Cash, Chris Gantry, Funky Donnie Fritts, and others but later admitted was mostly about himself. “He’s a walkin’ contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction,” he sang. “Taking every wrong direction on his lonely way back home.”

All those wrong directions led to some spectacular locales. In 1971, Kristofferson began a side career as an actor. He would go on to win a Golden Globe award for his role in A Star Is Born , and to act in numerous films including Semi-Tough , Songwriter , Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid , The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea , Lone Star , and Blade . He toured the world with his band and with Rita Coolidge, his wife from 1973 until 1980. He moved from Nashville to California. And he recorded nine albums between 1972 and 1979.

This flurry of activity and the accompanying celebrity did not ease Kristofferson’s mind, which was prone to depression, or his problematic drinking habit. The heady years of grand success proved to be some of the most difficult of his life.

“The darkness is driving me farther away from the shore/ Throw me a rhyme or a reason to try to go on,” he wrote and sang in “Shipwrecked in the 80s.” He found rhyme and reason in the graceful form of Lisa Meyers, who married Kristofferson in 1983 and helped him get his life under control. The couple would have five children together, and Kristofferson became the doting father that he hadn’t been for his first three kids in the 1960s and 70s.

In 1985, Kristofferson joined Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson to form the supergroup now called The Highwaymen. The group returned Kristofferson’s voice to radio, provided a larger audience for him to relay his critical and sometimes controversial views on American foreign policy, and offered him great joy.

“Every time I look at a picture of Willie and me and John and Waylon, I find it amazing that they let the janitor in there,” he told journalist Mikal Gilmore.

After two roundly ignored solo albums for Mercury Records, Repossessed and Third World Warrior , Kristofferson began working with producer Don Was in 1995. Their creative partnership proved fruitful, with Was’s restrained production allowing the gristly character in Kristofferson’s voice to be heard to full effect, and with Kristofferson writing pensive, eloquent songs that rank with his finest works. “It’s about making sense of life at this end of the game,” Kristofferson said about his 2009 Closer to the Bone album, and that comment also applies to Was-produced works A Moment of Forever (2006), This Old Road (2009), and Feeling Mortal (2013). On his 80 th birthday in 2016, Kris released The Cedar Creek Sessions , which was nominated for a Grammy for best Americana Album six months later.

Until the Covid pandemic in 2020, Kristofferson toured incessantly in the 21st century, a quiet man in worn brown boots, commanding stages with only his guitar and harmonica for accompaniment. His Gibson acoustic might go out of tune . . . no matter. He might forget a song lyric . . . audience members were there to fill it in. His charisma and his songs outshone the brightest of spotlights, and the effect was mesmerizing.

In 2003, Kristofferson received the Free Speech Award from the Americana Music Association and in 2004 he became a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. Since then he has received lifetime achievement honors from BMI, The Recording Academy, the Country Music Association, and the Academy of Country Music, among many others.

“When I got started, I was one of the people hoping to bring respect to country music,” he said. “Some of the songs I had that got to be hits did that. I imagine that’s why somebody might vote me into a Hall of Fame. I know it’s not because of my golden throat.”

On the back cover of The Silver Tongued Devil and I , Kristofferson advised that his songs were “Echoes of the going ups and coming downs, walking pneumonia and run-of-the-mill madness, colored with guilt, pride, and a vague sense of despair.”

Sometimes divine communion, then, is holy hell. Kristofferson brought some of that hell on himself, and he lived through times when guilt and despair were anything but vague, and when pride was hard to conjure. Asked about regrets, he said, “Listen, I have those. But my life has turned out so well for me that I would be afraid to change anything.”

About Kris Kristofferson

Kristoffer Kristofferson (born June 22, 1936) is an American singer-songwriter and actor. Among his songwriting credits are the songs "Me and Bobby McGee", "For the Good Times", "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down", and "Help Me Make It Through the Night", all of which were hits for other artists. Kristofferson composed his own songs and collaborated with Nashville songwriters such as Shel Silverstein.

In 1985, Kristofferson joined fellow country artists Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash in forming the country music supergroup the Highwaymen, and formed a key creative force in the outlaw country music movement that eschewed the Nashville music machine in favor of independent songwriting and producing. In 2004, Kristofferson was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
