Dave Chappelle coming to Xcel Energy Center, and audiences won't be allowed to bring their phones

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Comedian Dave Chappelle is set to return to the Twin Cities this fall for the first time since a public uproar caused his First Avenue gig last summer to change venues last minute.

Chappelle is set to stop at Xcel Energy Center on Sept. 23 as part of a nationwide tour that starts in August. Tickets will go on sale Thursday at 10 a.m. via Ticketmaster.

According to Xcel officials, no cell phones, cameras or any other recording devices will be allowed into the arena during the event:

"Upon arrival, all phones and smart watches will be secured in Yondr pouches that will be unlocked at the end of the show. Guests maintain possession of their phones throughout the night and, if needed, may access their phones at designated Yondr unlocking stations in the lobby. Anyone caught with a cellphone in the venue will be immediately ejected. We appreciate your cooperation in creating a phone-free viewing experience."

Chappelle was scheduled to perform at First Avenue last July, but the show was moved to the Varsity Theater at the last minute after fan outcry about transphobic material in the comedian's Netflix specials.

He taped one of his Netflix specials at Target Center in Minneapolis .

Things to Do

Entertainment, entertainment | dave chappelle set to headline xcel energy center in september, the comic faced a backlash after he attempted to play first avenue last summer.

Dave Chappelle poses for a fan photo.

Stand-up comic Dave Chappelle has booked a dozen late-summer arena shows, including a Sept. 23 stop at St. Paul’s Xcel Energy Center.

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Thursday through Ticketmaster. Neither the venue nor the promoter announced prices.

Chappelle, 49, rose to fame as the star of Comedy Central’s “Chappelle’s Show,” which ran for 28 episodes in the early ’00s before Chappelle quit, despite blockbuster ratings. One of the most famous sketches featured Eddie Murphy’s brother Charlie recounting a late-night basketball game with Prince. The Purple One loved it and made references to it online.

After the end of “Chappelle’s Show,” the comic mostly stepped out of the spotlight, but returned to regular touring in 2013. He has since performed in numerous local venues, including a November 2021 show at Target Center.

Last summer, he announced a last-minute gig at First Avenue that led to an online backlash due to the comedian’s numerous jokes about transgender people. In 2020, the venue adopted a code of conduct for its audience members, employees and performers that forbids “acting or speaking in a discriminatory manner or using racist, sexist, ableist, transphobic, homophobic, xenophobic or other biased language, including intentional misgendering.”

The show was ultimately moved to the Varsity Theater.

Chappelle has filmed a series of specials for Netflix and was reportedly paid $24.1 million for 2021’s “The Closer,” which he has said will be his last stand-up special for the foreseeable future.

The show moving to Varsity Theater was in addition to his shows already scheduled at the venue. All those shows happened, although people did protest outside the theater.

Dave Chappelle Announces Two New Shows In Minnesota

After selling out a Minnesota show in less than five minutes, controversial comedian Dave Chappelle has announced two additional shows in the Twin Cities, according to Varsity Theater.

Chappelle's July 20 show at Fist Ave in Minneapolis sold out in a matter of minutes today (July 19). Now, he's announced two more shows in the city. The comic will perform at the Varsity Theater for two nights on July 21 and 22. Tickets for the shows go on sale today at 2 p.m. Here's where you can grab them (if you're quick enough).

Chappelle first performed at Varsity Theater in 2019. The last time he was in Minnesota was for a performance at the Target Center during a 2021 tour stop.

In other Chappelle news, the show announcements come about a month after news broke he bought land in a small Ohio community to spite a developer . He reportedly purchased 19 of 52 acres of land in Yellow Springs, Ohio, to block Oberer Land Developers, Ltd. from building a huge subdivision on the property.

Chappelle, who is originally from Washington D.C., moved to Yellow Springs during the height of his success in the early 2000s. He currently lives there with his wife and three children.

Review: dave chappelle alternates between shock and sweetness in his official st. paul debut.

Dave Chappelle has two types of followers. There are the ones that want to watch him plunge into hot water and see how he swims his way out. Then there are the fans who worship him as a master storyteller who alternates between truth and hyperbole, leaning toward whichever one gets the biggest reaction.

Saturday's performance at Xcel Energy Center, his first official show in St. Paul, had just enough to satisfy both.

Chappelle, who turned 50 last month, had plenty of gasp-inducing material aimed at a variety of targets: Muslims, Michael Jackson, the physically disabled, Indian-Americans and Lil Nas X.

He said he was done making jokes about transgender people — "it wasn't worth the trouble" — and then proceeded to unload a few bullets that were left in the chamber.

The bits, taken out of context, could trigger more outrage like the kind he faced last summer when First Avenue canceled his appearance at the last moment and forced him to move to the Varsity Theater, where protesters mixed it up with the ticketholders waiting to get in.

But in concert, it's clear that Chappelle is just having fun. His most vicious lines were almost always punctuated with a little-kid grin and his slapping the mike against his thigh. A few times, he jogged around the square stage like he had just swiped some candy with every intention of returning the goodies to the store.

Chappelle has had more memorable appearances in the Twin Cities.

A decade ago, he did a 12-show marathon in Minneapolis that concluded with a basketball game and pancake dinner. After a 2021 screening of his documentary at Target Center, he surprised fans with a mini-concert featuring Usher and Justin Bieber. He's also popped up in smaller venues in the area to test new material.

There was little that was groundbreaking about this visit. A lot of his material — the Chris Rock/Will Smith slap, being tackled on stage at the Hollywood Bowl, almost being beat up by Russian mobsters — was old.

At one point, it appeared that he might share some personal stories about Prince, Norm Macdonald and Charlie Murphy, all of whom have passed away. But he pulled back; this wasn't that kind of night.

This was rock star Chappelle, whose main aim was to turn Xcel into a rave. The buildup was conducted by DJ Trauma, who pumped up the crowd with 1980s tunes and patter that made you think Elvis Presley might waddle out. The lighting and stage could have been for a heavyweight boxing match.

But once Chappelle took the stage, he turned Xcel into a comedy club, shifting his stool and stance so that he could play to all four sides of the arena. He even did some "crowd surfing," interacting with those in the front rows like he was Don Rickles doing a Vegas act. But for the most part, he played it safe. The passion that has made him the subject of so much controversy took a back seat to his desire to be an amiable host.

It was the openers that were more interested in shaking things up. Flame Monroe, a transgender comic based in California, might as well have been Redd Foxx in a dress. Marshall Brandon, an impressive new voice, had a clever pitch for Harriet Tubman sneakers.

Donnell Rawlings, a "Chappelle's Show" regular, also conjured up memories of Foxx by filling his set with a racial slur. His take on Shirley Caesar's "I Got Beans Greens Potatoes Tomatoes," one from a white perspective, made you hungry to hear more. His first Netflix special is coming soon.

Chappelle earned his fair share of big laughs as well. This was a genius on cruise control — and that's still a worthwhile trip.

dave chappelle fall comedy tour dates

After an explosive and contentious Netflix special in 2021, Dave Chappelle is hitting the road again.

The veteran comedian has announced the dates for a fall stand-up comedy tour, titled “Dave Chappelle Live,” which will open with twin dates at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Aug. 22-23 and conclude at Chicago’s United Center on Oct. 4.

Tickets to the tour, produced by Live Nation, will be available starting with local presales on Wednesday, July 26. The general onsale begins on Thursday, July 27, at 10 a.m. local time at Ticketmaster.com.

Chappelle has been a controversial figure following his 2021 Netflix special “The Closer,” in which he made jokes about transgender people, leading to  company walkouts  and protests last October. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos originally defended Chappelle, saying in statement that the comedian is “one of the most popular stand-ups today” and “as with our other talent, we work hard to support their creative freedom — even though this means there will always be content on Netflix some people believe is harmful.” Sarandos ultimately said he “screwed up” in his reaction to the Chappelle backlash.

The comedian made headlines again in 2022 when he was attacked on stage  while performing a comedy set during the Netflix Is a Joke festival in Los Angeles.

Tickets will be available beginning with local presales on July 26, while the general sale kicks off July 27 at 10 a.m. local time at Ticketmaster.com.

A five-time Emmy Award winner with a provocative approach to a wide range of subjects, Chappelle was honored with the 2019 Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. He also won the Grammy Award for best comedy three consecutive years, from 2018 through 2020.

Chappelle made headlines when a man attempted to attack him onstage during a 2022 show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. That man was later sentenced to 270 days in jail .

“He refuses to allow last night’s incident to overshadow the magic of this historic moment,” his rep said of Chappelle in a statement after the incident, while noting the show tied him with comedy troupe Monty Python as the comedians who have headlined the most performances at the Hollywood Bowl.

Dave Chappelle's 'The Closer' controversy

Dave Chappelle came under fire in 2021 for his Netflix standup special "The Closer." The special provoked backlash due to his remarks about the LBGTQ+ community , in particular his focus on the transgender community.

In the special, Chappelle resurfaced a December 2019 controversy in which “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling drew backlash  after conflating sex with gender  and defending ideas suggesting that changing one's biological sex was a threat to her own gender identity.

Chappelle also attempted to paint a juxtaposition between the pace of civil rights gained by the LGBTQ community and those fought for by the Black community.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos defended his decision to keep the special on the streaming service amid internal criticism from company employees.

Sarandos sent a staff memo at the time pledging Netflix's commitment to the special, citing Netflix's work in supporting their talent's creative freedom.

Sarandos' support of the special led to a walkout from a group of Netflix employees in 2021, a gesture that was amplified by emotional pleas from supporters of the walkout who rallied outside company headquarters.

The employees said company executives dismissed their concerns that Chappelle's comments in "The Closer" could lead to violence against the trans community.

At the time, two employees, one transgender and one non-binary, filed labor charges against the streaming giant alleging the company retaliated against them for speaking out aboutChappelle's special.

Hours before the walkout, Netflix shared a statement with USA TODAY: "We value our trans colleagues and allies, and understand the deep hurt that’s been caused. We respect the decision of any employee who chooses to walk out, and recognize we have much more work to do both within Netflix and in our content.”

"I want everyone in this audience to know that even though the media frames this that it's me versus that community, that is not what it is," Chappelle said in a 2021 Instagram clip. "Do not blame the LBGTQ (sic) community for any of this (expletive). This has nothing to do with them. It's about corporate interest, and what I can say, and what I cannot say."

"The Closer" received two Primetime Emmy nominations in 2022, including outstanding variety special (pre-recorded). Stan Lathan was also nominated for outstanding directing of a variety special for his work on "The Closer."

After the Emmy nominations were announced, people on social media voiced their frustration and criticized the decision to give further recognition to Chappelle's Netflix special.

Dave Chappelle attacked onstage

In May 2022, Chappelle was attacked onstage at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles during the Netflix Is A Joke festival.

An audience member stormed the stage asChappelle, 48, was exiting the stage after his performance, lunging at him and tackling him to the ground, according to a press release from the Los Angeles Police Department.

The man also pointed a replica handgun, which contained a knife blade, at Chappelle during the encounter, resulting in a charge for assault with a deadly weapon, according to police.

The man was identified as Isaiah Lee and in December 2022, he was sentenced to 270 days in county jail.

Dave Chappelle hosting 'Saturday Night Live'

In November 2022, Chappelle hosted "Saturday Night Live" for a third time, and the reception was not warm.

"SNL" writer Celeste Yim shared a seemingly pointed message after Chappelle was announced as host. "I'm trans and non-binary. I use they/them pronouns. Transphobia is murder and it should be condemned,"  they wrote on their Instagram Story  alongside a photo from work, captured by a Reddit screenshot.

The hosting gig also came on the heels of "SNL" having just recently hired its first nonbinary cast member, Molly Kearney, just months before.
