Ed Oxenbould's Raps Steal The Show In 'The Visit'

the visit t diamond

M. Night Shyamalan's The Visit is the perfect thriller to watch at the end of the summer. It has everything you'd want to make your skin crawl: creepy old people, spine-tingling moments of unabashed fear, a decent amount of gross-out moments, an unexpected Shyamalan-brand plot twist, and rapping. Yes, you heard me right: rapping. Ed Oxenbould plays Tyler, one of the two grandchildren who visit the aforementioned creepy grandparents. He's your basic charming yet annoying little brother, with the exception of two things: he's a germaphobe, and he's a wannabe rapper that likens himself to Tyler the Creator. His rap alias is "T-Diamond Stylus," and he raps about what he knows in his tough upper middle class life. That said, Oxenbould brings levity and comic relief to this terrifying movie and he does it well — especially with his silly rapping "skillz." So where can you the raps in The Visit ?

Because seriously, you're going to want to hear these more than once. Oxenbould steals scenes when he slips into his rapping persona, and even if you don't love his lyrics, you've got to admit that they're catchy. Unfortunately, they aren't available on iTunes (yet, at least), so if you can't wait for T-Diamond's debut album to drop, then you'll have to watch his exclusive performances in the movie.

You would think that Oxenbould's raps were really off the cuff and freestyle with the way he delivered them, but they were actually written for the character. According to an interview M. Night Shyamalan did with MovieWeb , the rap was created by another wannabe rapper: the director himself.

"I am the frustrated rapper that wrote those raps," says Shyamalan. "It was basically me writing jokes in rap form ( laughs ). I remember those days, writing the raps, it was really fun. I'd just be giggling."

Oxenbould's musical talents — and Shyamalan's contributions — in The Visit can be added to a long line of movies that have scenes where the most unlikely character raps. Here are a couple of them.

Simon Rex In Scary Movie 3 (2003)

This riff on 8 Mile is as memorable as it is ridiculous.

David Herman In Office Space (1999)

Probably the funniest and most accurate instance of a white boy rapping in a movie. Plus, the character's name is "Michael Bolton." It doesn't get better than that.

Vanilla Ice In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret Of The Ooze (1991)

During the golden age of Vanilla Ice, he made a cameo as himself in this Ninja Turtle sequel. It was probably cool at the time, but now, not so much.

Anna Kendrick In Pitch Perfect (2012)

When Becca sings Blackstreet's "No Diggity," she pretty much slays and owns her first riff-off.

Noah Blake And Mandy Ingber In Teen Witch (1989)

The "Top That" rap from Teen Witch has become legendary and will continue to be the best of all time.

As The Visit and these other movies show, it's pretty amazing what kind of unexpected rap moments can come from the most unlikely movies.

The Visit review: the most shocking M. Night Shyamalan twist is a good movie

the visit t diamond

A decade ago it was impossible to discuss supernatural thrillers without invoking the name of M. Night Shyamalan. After exploding into the popular consciousness with The Sixth Sense , the writer-director staked his claim with carefully crafted follow-ups like Signs and Unbreakable , eventually leading Newsweek to dub him “The Next Spielberg.” But Shyamalan faltered soon thereafter, and by the time his sci-fi adaptation After Earth rolled around two years ago, his name was practically being hidden in studio marketing materials .

With irrelevancy lurking in the shadows, like one of his fictional boogeymen, the director needed to save his career. So Shyamalan switched things up — trying his hand at television with the quirky Wayward Pines , and leaving Hollywood behind altogether for his new movie The Visit . As the filmmaker told us in July , The Visit was a completely self-funded affair, with Shyamalan putting up the money so he could make a smaller film in relative secrecy without the interference of studios or outside influences. The result is the best snapshot we have of Shyamalan the filmmaker as he stands today.

Judging from the bonkers mix of horror and comedy that is The Visit , he may have gone totally insane — and that’s a wonderful thing.

The movie follows 15-year-old Becca (Olivia DeJonge) and her younger brother Tyler (a hilarious Ed Oxenbould). Their mother, played by Kathryn Hahn, is still suffering in the wake of her recent divorce, and to give everyone some space, the kids go off for a week to visit their grandparents for the very first time. Nana and Pop Pop (Deanna Dunagan and Peter McRobbie) are warm, if not a bit quirky, at first, but as the visit stretches on, it becomes clear that something is very, very wrong.

Yes, The Visit is a found footage movie, and it’s the first clue that this is a break from the Shyamalan we’ve seen before. As a director, he built his career on meticulously crafted shots and camera moves that carried an almost mathematical precision, but that’s all thrown out the window here. Becca is an aspiring filmmaker, intent on documenting the visit for her mom, and as she enlists Tyler to help, the film takes on a chaotic visual energy that adds a layer of unease when contrasted with Shyamalan’s methodical pace. Where it differs from the Paranormal Activities of the world is that it’s actually beautiful at times; very often Shyamalan simply can’t help but find a gorgeous way to light a scene or evoke a mood, and it keeps the film fresh where the sub-genre has otherwise been pummeled into the ground and left for dead.

THE VISIT promotional still (UNIVERSAL)

But visual technique is only worth so much, and what makes The Visit tick is the two young lead actors, who after a bumpy start settle into their self-conscious, found footage groove. DeJonge is grounded and believable as the older sister, her character endlessly precious and pretentious about her own filmmaking in what feels like Shyamalan having a laugh at himself for once. Oxenbould’s Tyler, on the other end, is the film’s comedic engine; a junior high suburbanite with hip-hop aspirations (he calls himself "T-Diamond Stylus") that deploys a comical adolescent bravado to cover up struggles with his parents’ separation.

Laughs and scares stack in a Jenga of oddball entertainment

That’s the other big surprise here: The Visit is actually funny , and not in a passing joke kind of way. It’s wild and outrageous, stacking laughs and scares atop one another in a giant Jenga of oddball entertainment. Contrasted with the overthought restraint of Shyamalan’s earlier work, The Visit is the Wild West; the kind of movie that uses a character’s unnerving penchant for skulking around nude as both a running joke and surprise scare, and that takes another’s obsessive tendencies and pays them off with a scatalogical gag that had me laughing and cringing in equal measure. It doesn’t always work — the mix is so bizarre that some jokes simply fail to land — but there’s a giddy energy that courses through the movie from beginning to end.

THE VISIT promotional still (UNIVERSAL)

More than anything else, it feels like Shyamalan Unleashed, operating without the weight of expectations for the first time in years. The filmmaker had actually focused on smaller, character-driven films before The Sixth Sense changed his career trajectory, but ever since that early success, his movies seemed to chase the same formula, twist endings and all. The Visit doesn’t seem concerned with living up to those expectations — there’s no mistaking this for a Spielbergian tale — and it’s a fresher story for it.

If The Visit was some midnight movie festival discovery, we’d be talking about its odd weirdness and the potential of its creator; we’d ask if they could take the promise of this small, indie film and transition into the land of big-scale studio movies. Oddly enough, it’s the same question that should be asked of Shyamalan now. But for the moment, he appears to be keeping things small. His next film is set to be another collaboration with Jason Blum, the low-budget horror producer behind Insidious and the Paranormal Activity films, and while people will certainly have higher expectations his next time out, I hope we see more of this weirder, care-free Shyamalan. He may not be making The Sixth Sense anymore, sure, but for the first time in a very long time, he’s making movies that are actually fun .

The Visit opens Friday, September 11th.

The works of M. Night Shyamalan, no matter the quality, are each on a quest of searching mystery and eventual discovery. All of his films are bursting with uneasy traps and elusive secrets, and it is these traits in which Shyamalan's fame was built upon. To say he had a dry spell is a massive understatement, but as soon as The Visit flares up with its opening shot, a startling vision immediately makes its presence known.

I felt like I was home again.

The Visit , while advertised as a silly and creepy chiller, is more of an insane boiling pot of family turmoil and batshit antics. It's a bewildering mix of humor, horror, and heart-wrenching dramatic impact, and each…

"Old people sometimes have troubles with their body" "People leave. They find something better."

Doesn't quite have the scope of his early work but probably the most vital found footage filmmaking has felt in... ever? Shyamalan's visual grace & intelligence blends really well with the cheap, modern ageism Hansel & Gretal exploitation movie he's making here and he very effectively uses the immediacy inherent to the form to sneak real sudden thrills into some of his usual themes of familial breakdown/estrangement and masking/physically overcoming emotional trauma. There are a number of very creepily conceived shocks but weirdly enough the film is much more emotionally clear & cathartic than it is scary by the end. It totally works though so I have trouble seeing this as a bad thing.

▶ 2015 Movie Rankings

▶ RANKED: M. Night Shyamalan

Is it better than Mad Max: Fury Road ? Even a (very welcome and long-awaited) Shyamalan resurgence can't top the chrome juggernaut.

Wait, wait, wait, hold up, hold up... Shyamalan made a good movie?! M. Night Shyamalan? What?! Yes, people, believe it. Your favorite punching bag is back with a vengeance. It's not as great as The Sixth Sense or Unbreakable , but it's a step in the right direction.

Is there a twist? It's Shyamalan. Of course, there's a twist.

Is the twist predictable? I saw it coming from the get-go. It's a pretty good twist though. It's the sort that doesn't ruin the fun even if you do guess it early…

Review by Neil Bahadur ★★★★½ 11

Unbelievable. Probably my 2nd favourite Shyamalan...one of the great films where everything you thought was right turns out to be wrong, and certainly the scariest film Shyamalan has made. There is explosive digital formalism, cameras seem to be attached to bodies and in moments of intense, quick movement the frame is obscured by flinging hair and occasional ruptures in the image of a human face; abstractions which could be only captured by the size of consumer grade cameras. In a way, it's inspiring because of that.

But much of this movie's terror comes from the opposite of Shyamalan's earlier tendencies, that we should believe in ghosts and demons ala Dreyer or Tourneur. Rather, people are terrifying, and even worse, family.…

M. night shyamalan loosens up and reminds us how good he can be in this comedic horror film..

the visit t diamond

At first, everything seems to be going swimmingly. Nana and Pop Pop, who live on a big, rambling farm, are almost idealized grandparents: Nana likes to bake; Pop Pop chops wood and tinkers in the shed. But, little by little, things seem to get strange: What are those mysterious banging noises at night? What actually is Pop Pop doing in the shed? What’s up with that strict 9:30 curfew? And why does Nana insist that Becca climb all the way into the oven to clean it?

Discover the best time to visit vancouver, canada in 2023 with our ultimate guide, navigating the best time to cruise hawaii and experience the ultimate adventure, when is the best time of year to visit crater of diamonds state park in arkansas: everything you need to know.

John Figaro

Crater of Diamonds State Park, nestled in the scenic town of Murfreesboro, Arkansas, is a gem (quite literally) for those seeking adventure and the thrill of possibly unearthing a real diamond. But when is the optimal time to embark on this unique journey?

When is the best time of Year to visit Crater of Diamonds State Park?

The best time of year to visit Crater of Diamonds State Park largely depends on your personal preferences:

  • Weather Considerations: Spring and fall offer mild temperatures, making it comfortable to spend hours searching for diamonds. For a detailed monthly weather breakdown, check Weather.com’s Murfreesboro, Arkansas page .”
  • Crowd Factor: Summer is the peak tourist season. While this means more camaraderie among fellow diamond hunters, it also means more competition and crowded facilities.
  • Special Events: The park occasionally hosts events and workshops related to gem hunting. Checking the park’s event calendar can help you align your visit with these special occasions. You can view the official event calendar here .

Best time to visit the park for diamond hunting

If your primary goal is diamond hunting, consider the following:

  • After Rainfall: Diamonds, being heavy, often rest at the surface after a good rain, making the days following rainfall particularly promising.
  • Spring and Early Summer: The ground is softer during these months, making it easier to dig and sift through the soil.

What time of year are diamonds found at the park?

Diamonds are found year-round at the park, but certain times may offer a slight edge:

  • Post-Rainy Days: As mentioned, diamonds tend to surface after heavy rains, making the subsequent days ideal for discovery.
  • Winter Months: While it might seem counterintuitive, the reduced number of visitors during colder months means less competition and a higher chance of stumbling upon a diamond overlooked by others.

What are the odds of finding a diamond at Crater of Diamonds State Park?

While finding a diamond is never guaranteed, the odds at Crater of Diamonds State Park are surprisingly favorable compared to other diamond hunting locations:

  • Daily Discoveries: On average, one to two diamonds are found by park visitors every day.
  • Size and Quality: While many diamonds are small, there have been significant finds, with some weighing several carats.
  • Your Effort Matters: The more time and effort you invest in searching and the more informed you are about the techniques, the better your chances.

Remember, every visitor has an equal opportunity to discover a diamond, and the thrill of the hunt is often as rewarding as the find itself.

Is there a specific season that is better for finding diamonds at the park?

While diamonds are discovered throughout the year at Crater of Diamonds State Park, certain seasons offer unique advantages:

  • Spring: The milder temperatures and softer ground make it easier to dig. Plus, the occasional spring showers can bring diamonds closer to the surface.
  • Summer: Despite being the busiest season, the consistent visitor turnover means the soil is regularly turned over, increasing the chances of a diamond surfacing.
  • Fall: The cooler temperatures and reduced crowds offer a more relaxed diamond hunting experience.
  • Winter: The cold might deter many, but the persistent hunter can benefit from the decreased competition.

How often are diamonds found at Crater of Diamonds State Park?

The frequency of diamond discoveries at the park is a testament to its richness:

  • Consistent Finds: On average, park visitors report finding one to two diamonds daily.
  • Variety: The diamonds unearthed range in size, color, and quality, with some days yielding multiple small finds and others surprising with a single, larger gem.
  • Unpredictability: While averages provide a general idea, the exact number can vary. Some days might see no discoveries, while others could witness several visitors striking it lucky.

What is the history of crater of diamonds state park.

Crater of Diamonds has a rich history that adds to its allure. Dive deeper into its fascinating history here

  • Discovery: The first diamond was found in 1906 by John Huddleston, a local farmer, transforming the area’s fate.
  • Diamond Rush: News of the discovery led to a “diamond rush,” with prospectors flocking to Murfreesboro in hopes of striking it rich.
  • State Ownership: After changing several private hands and witnessing various commercial mining attempts, the site was acquired by the State of Arkansas in 1972 and was designated a state park.
  • Public Access: Unlike other diamond-bearing sites, Crater of Diamonds is unique in allowing the public to search for diamonds and keep their finds.

How did the park become a diamond mine in Arkansas?

The transformation of the park into a diamond mine is a tale of serendipity and vision:

  • Initial Discovery: John Huddleston’s accidental discovery of two diamonds on his property was the spark that ignited interest in the area.
  • Commercial Interest: Over the years, several companies attempted commercial mining operations, drawn by the site’s potential. However, none sustained long-term success.
  • State’s Vision: Recognizing the site’s potential as a recreational area rather than a commercial venture, the State of Arkansas purchased the land, ensuring its preservation and public accessibility.

When was the first diamond found at Crater of Diamonds State Park?

The pivotal moment that put Crater of Diamonds on the map was in 1906. John Huddleston, while working on his farm, stumbled upon shiny crystals that were later identified as diamonds. This serendipitous find was the beginning of the area’s transformation from a quiet farmland to a bustling hub of diamond prospectors and, eventually, a state park welcoming diamond hunters from around the world.

What is the significance of the park in terms of diamond discoveries?

  • Recent Highlights: Just last year, a visitor discovered a 4-carat diamond, proving that significant finds are still very much a reality.
  • Endless Potential: Given the vast expanse of the park and the natural processes that bring diamonds to the surface, the potential for discoveries remains high.

Why is the park open to the public for diamond searching?

The decision to keep Crater of Diamonds State Park open to the public stems from a blend of history, vision, and economics:

  • Historical Precedent: Since its early days, the area has been a hub for individual prospectors. This spirit of public exploration was something the state wanted to preserve.
  • Economic Considerations: While commercial mining had its challenges, opening the park to the public provided a sustainable economic model through tourism.
  • Educational Value: The park serves as a hands-on educational experience, teaching visitors about geology, gemology, and the thrill of discovery.

Iceland’s Diamond Circle: A Complete Guide for an Epic Road Trip

The Diamond Circle in Iceland is a not-to-be-missed loop drive. It’s in the northeast of Iceland and combines some of Iceland’s most stunning natural attractions with coastal views looking towards the Arctic Circle…all without the crowds elsewhere in Iceland!

Northern Iceland’s Diamond Circle is well-worth a spot on your Iceland itinerary!

The great news is that veering off-the-beaten-path in Iceland is risk-free. The island country will take your breath away at every turn. The more you venture away from the popular Golden Circle sights closer to Reyjkavik, the more Iceland will reward you for your adventurous efforts.

Read on for everything you need to plan your time along the Diamond Circle!

the visit t diamond

I traveled to Iceland in May and drove the Ring Road. In all honesty, I spent a few days deciding if I should stay in southern Iceland and focus my time there. But, the more I researched, the more I wanted to visit the north of Iceland, too.

In particular, the Diamond Circle caught my eye because there were so many spectacular things to see and do in a relatively compact area.

Where is the Diamond Circle?

Located in the northeastern part of Iceland, the Diamond Circle includes popular base towns like Myvatn and Husavik. Akureyri is the capital of Iceland’s north and is just 50 miles west of Myvatn.

The absolute best way to get to this part of Iceland and explore the Diamond Circle is by car. The little public transportation there is in this part of Iceland doesn’t generally cater to visitors by stopping at touristic places or driving scenic routes like the Diamond Circle.

Car rentals are widely available at the Reyjkavik airport and will be the most convenient way to maximize your time throughout your entire trip to Iceland.

Camper vans are also quite popular to rent and allow you to live and sleep out of the van while road tripping in Iceland.

Iceland Diamond Circle Map

It’s always better to have a visual! This Diamond Circle Map is available for free at hotels and points of interest in the area.

Diamond Circle Iceland Map

Diamond Circle Route

If you’re driving Route1-Ring Road in a counterclockwise direction (what I did and recommend), then you’d turn right onto Route 862 to begin this loop drive and eventually get onto Route 85 until meeting back up with Ring Road. (Alternatively, you’d use Route 864 if you were planning to see the east sides of the Dettifoss and Selfoss waterfalls. More on this in a moment.)

If you’re coming from the opposite direction, you’d turn left onto Route 85 first to make your way up past Husavik and around the coast before heading south on either Routes 862 or 864.

The downside to this is you’ll be driving on the opposite side of the coastline, with the lane of opposite direction traffic potentially blocking photo opportunities and making turns to pull off a bit trickier.

Even though I was driving Ring Road in a counterclockwise direction, I continued on to Myvatn first and spent some time exploring the sights in and around town before staying at this Myvatn hotel for the night. The next morning I drove east towards Route 862 because Dettifoss Waterfall was to be my first stop of the day along the Diamond Circle.

What Kind of Car is Necessary to Drive the Diamond Circle?

the visit t diamond

You don’t need a 4WD to drive the Diamond Circle. Route 1-Ring Road, Route 85, and Route 862 are paved roads.

However , if you decide to visit the east side of the Dettifoss and Selfoss Waterfalls, you’ll need to drive Route 864 which is a rough, pot-hole marked, gravel road. I would only drive this particular route with a 4WD. You could easily bottom out with a low-to-the-ground car, not to mention suffer tire or window damage. This Iceland travel tips guide has more information about car types and driving in Iceland.

Past these 2 best waterfalls in Iceland , continuing on this road to Asbrygi Canyon, you’ll find the road conditions get worse from the previous section.

Also, keep in mind, Route 864 closes for winter and doesn’t generally re-open until summer. This website shows real-time information about Iceland roads, their conditions, and whether or not a road is open or closed.

ProTip: If you decide to drive Route 864, remember to factor in extra time. These rough, gravel roads often mean you can only travel at very slow speeds. Think 5-15mph. The distance may be short but the time spent driving can really cut into your Diamond Circle itinerary.

Diamond Circle Timing Logistics

At only 155 miles, you could certainly drive the Diamond Circle in a day. But, I’d recommend spending at least 1 night in the area if you can. There are accommodations in towns like Myvatn, Akureyri, and Husavik, as well as other guest houses and hotels in the area.

The Diamond Circle loop is best driven in the late spring and summer. You’ll have 18+ hours of daylight to drive and explore the sights along this spectacular drive.

Visiting northern Iceland is also best from mid-May to September because the winter snow will likely have (mostly) melted away.

Snow melts faster in the south of Iceland than it does up north. It’s not uncommon to have popular places like Skogafoss Waterfall and the Waterfall Way hiking trail above it turning green as plants come out of their winter slumber. While up north, the trail leading to the viewpoint on the west side of Dettifoss can be completely covered by a couple of inches of snow.

Where to Stay on the Diamond Circle

the visit t diamond

There are a few central points along the Diamond Circle on the northern coast of Iceland with hotels and guest houses. I recommend basing yourself in a town so you are closer to services like gas and food.

Depending on your Diamond Circle itinerary, more than 1 base may make sense. For example, you might choose to stay in Myvatn and day trip the Diamond Circle before finishing in Akureyri. Or you might choose to split the Diamond Circle over several days and use Husavik as a stop for the night before continuing on towards Akureyri the next day.

I stayed 1 night in Myvatn and then another night in Akureyri. This allowed enough time to visit the places along the Diamond Circle and in this stretch of northeastern Iceland, while still keeping my progress steady around Ring Road.

Myvatn Hotels

Sel hotel myvatn.

This hotel is located right off Ring Road/Route 1 across from Lake Myvatn and the Pseudocraters. Dimmuborgir is a 10-minute drive from the hotel. If you’re lucky to have a room facing the road like we were, you’ll have beautiful views of the lake and craters.

The rooms are spacious, clean, and comfortable. A full complimentary breakfast with lots of options is served each morning and the hotel’s restaurant is open for dinner in the evenings. We ordered personal pizzas and loved them! There’s also a gas pump right next to the hotel which is perfect when you want to refuel before setting off for the day. If you have an electric vehicle, there are plugs available to plug in and recharge.

Fosshotel Myvatn

This upscale property is situated on the northern side of Lake Myvatn, in close proximity to Myvatn’s natural attractions. The hotel serves a full complimentary breakfast and offers dinner in the evenings. The large windows in the dining room and near the bar offer a great view of Lake Myvatn and the surrounding landscapes.

The modern rooms with comfortable beds offer storage and a seating area. Some rooms come with gorgeous lake views and outdoor seating space. As with most locations on the north coast of Iceland along the Diamond Circle, Fosshotel can be a great spot to watch for the Northern Lights in winter.

Husavik Hotels

Fosshotel husavik.

As you drive through Iceland, you’ll notice many Fosshotels. They are a well-known chain of hotels around the country. Husavik has one of those Fosshotel locations. The hotel is an 8-minute walk to Husavik Harbor, the place where Husavik whale watching tours depart and where you’ll find the Husavik Whale Museum and the town’s harborside restaurants.

The hotel offers free parking and a restaurant on-site. The rooms are cozy, yet modern. Some rooms offer views of the fjord and Skjalfandi Bay. In the mornings, breakfast is available.

Akureyri Hotels

Hafdals hotel.

This is my top choice in Akureyri! In fact, it was my favorite stay during my entire trip to Iceland. This small hotel is situated on a hill overlooking the beautiful bay and fjord. The town of Akureyri is just down the hill and across the bridge, about a 5-minute drive away. We quickly and easily ordered take-out from a restaurant in town and brought it back to the room.

The rooms are spacious and clean, with views overlooking the bay. Our room had chairs just outside meant for watching the sunset over the bay. (Unfortunately, we got a very cloudy day.) The complimentary breakfast was fantastic, with plenty of options. In particular, too, the owner was so kind and helpful. He talked us through a few questions we had about our day’s drive and also offered some local secrets about places to visit on Iceland’s north coast.

Hotel Kea by Keahotels

Situated in the center of Akureyri, Hotel Kea has a prime location for walking around the town. Free street parking is available from the hotel, along with a complimentary breakfast each morning.

The rooms are decent-sized, some with views of the church and town. There’s a restaurant on-site that serves dinner. The outdoor patio is a great spot in the warmer months to sit with a drink from the hotel bar.

Diamond Circle Best Things to See and Do

Myvatn and lake myvatn area.

In and around the village of Myvatn, there are several places to see and explore. Depending on how you plan your Diamond Circle itinerary, Myvatn can make a good place to spend the night.

I arrived in the Myvatn area just after noon and spent time visiting the sites listed below, taking advantage of the long hours of daylight.

Krafla Viti Crater

the visit t diamond

This crater, a few miles from Myvatn with a turn just off Route 1, was formed during a years-long volcanic eruption and explosion. What makes this crater different from others you may see in Iceland is that it’s filled with blue water. Combine this with the crater’s large size and the mountains and steam vents in the backdrop and you’ll yet again be in awe of Iceland’s magical landscape.

There’s a rim walk that starts just near Kafla Viti Crater’s parking area. The walk is easy and shouldn’t take more than an hour. You can also choose to walk down into a geothermal area beneath the rim. Be mindful of any signs warning against the heat of the geothermal area. They are to be believed!

Hverir Geothermal Area

the visit t diamond

If by this point Iceland hasn’t made you feel like you’re on another planet, this steaming, bubbling site will surely transport you. This active geothermal area is just off Ring Road, east of Myvatn. In fact, it’s an easy stop to make on your way to the Myvatn area.

This site sits below the Namafjall volcanic mountain, as part of the Namaskard geothermal area. The site is pocked with hot mud pits, vents that release heat from the depths of the Earth, boiling sulfur springs, and fumaroles. (Not to be mistaken for the much more delightful smelling profiterole.)

The site is free to visit, with a large parking area just off Route 1 (aka Ring Road). There is a ground loop you can walk which should take about 30 minutes. Just be sure to have some mints or a nose/mouth covering if you’re particularly sensitive to the smell of sulfur.

Myvatn Nature Baths

the visit t diamond

Many visitors rush to the popular Blue Lagoon outside of Reyjakavik, but Iceland has many places to enjoy a thermal bath including in the north! Given the high amount of geothermal activity in the Lake Myvatn area, it’s probably not surprising to find hot springs listed as one of the main attractions in the Diamond Circle area.

The lagoon at the Myvatn Nature Baths has turquoise, mineral-rich water that’s great for the skin, among other health benefits. It’s a great way to relax and rejuvenate (away from the crowds at the Blue Lagoon!) while taking in the gorgeous views of the Myvatn area. If you’re there at the right time, you can watch the sunset and then cross your fingers for a chance to see the northern lights dance across the sky.

the visit t diamond

Grjotagja is a cave used as a setting for Game of Thrones. The thermal springs inside the cave are too hot for bathing and unfortunately have been mistreated by visitors. The cave sits on private land so if you visit, please be respectful. Stay out of the water for your own safety and the natural beauty of the cave. And also remember to leave no trace. , the pseudo craters near Lake Myvatn, and Dimmuborgir, a lava field with other-worldly caves and rock formations.

the visit t diamond

Not far from Grjotagja and the eastern shores of Lake Myvatn, Hverfjall volcanic crater is hard to miss. It’s more than a half-mile wide and rises up 1,300 feet. It’s the result of a massive eruption thousands of years ago.

There are 2 designated trails to the rim of the crater. The hike to the top isn’t long but be prepared for a moderate climb with loose gravel. Once at the top, you can walk the entire perimeter of the crater. It’s roughly 2 1/2 miles around. However, the views are the main draw! You’ll be able to see over Lake Myvatn, Dimmuborgir, and the surrounding area.

ProTip: Bring trekking poles to help with the hike to the rim of the crater, especially for the way down which can be even harder on the knees. Plus, they’re bound to come in handy for other hikes in Iceland, too!

Dimmuborgir

the visit t diamond

Iceland is full of places you can’t see anywhere else in the world. Dimmuborgir is no exception! This volcanic area was the sight of a massive eruption thousands of years ago. Today, what’s left behind are black lava rock formations and caves, with “the church” being the most famous lava creation. Over the years, plants have crept back to life in the mineral-rich soil creating an eerie landscape full of Icelandic folklore.

Dimmuborgir is located on the eastern side of Lake Myvatn, just a few minutes’ drive from the area’s hotels and services. It’s free to visit and walk the trails. The trails are well-marked with signage and mostly flat. A few of the walks take less than an hour to complete. The landscape is both beautiful and unearthly with the lake as a backdrop.

As with a few of the other natural sites in the Myvatn area, you don’t need a lot of time to visit Dimmuborgir. On longer days, you could visit even if you only arrive in the Myvatn area in the afternoon.

Skutustadagigar

the visit t diamond

Nicknamed the Pseudocraters because they are crater-shaped formations but did not form as a result of actually being volcanoes. Still, they’re impressive to look at while you’re in the Lake Myvatn area and honestly hard to miss if you’re by the lake or driving through the Myvatn area. The pseudocraters are quite close to the road and have a parking lot. From the Sel Hotel Myvatn, I had a clear view of them just across the street.

There are some walking trails that will lead you around and in between the craters. As with so many natural phenomenons in Iceland, it’ll be hard to put your camera down! And, if you’re short on time, no worries. You can get a sense of the pseudocraters by walking the loop path in just half an hour or so.

Dettifoss waterfall

the visit t diamond

This powerful waterfall is the second most powerful in all of Europe and truly one of the most impressive in all of Iceland. Dettifoss is more than 300 feet wide and drops almost 150 feet down into the Jokulsargljufur Canyon. Even if you can’t wrap your head around more than 6,000 cubic feet of water (44k+ gallons) falling every second, your feet will feel the ground quaking beneath them the closer you get to Dettifoss.

There are 2 sides to view Dettifoss. The west side of the Falls can be reached by Route 862 for most of the year. The road is paved and leads to a small Visitor’s Center and parking lot. From there, you can walk the trails that lead to Dettifoss. There is an upper viewing platform and a lower viewpoint. We were lucky to have a calm day when the winds weren’t blowing the mist and could clearly see Dettifoss from the viewing platform.

The lower viewpoint brings you closer to Dettifoss by way of a steep path. Know your limits and remember you must walk back up the trail to return to the parking area.

ProTip: You can also visit Dettifoss from the east side via Route 864. This viewpoint brings you thrillingly close to the Falls. However, the road is unpaved, rough, and open only at certain times of the year. Even in May the time of year I visited, this road was still snow-covered and closed. Check road conditions using the helpful websites listed below before setting out to visit Dettifoss to solidify your plan.

Selfoss Waterfall

the visit t diamond

Just upstream from Dettifoss, you’ll find Selfoss, another beautiful Diamond Circle waterfall composed of numerous waterfalls spilling over rocks at various points forming a horseshoe shape. It’s wide in size like Dettifoss but the drops aren’t as tall. If you visit in the winter, some of the small pretty waterfalls along Selfoss’ flanks stop flowing. But, the larger area of waterfalls will flow in the distance.

If you’ve visited Dettifoss from the west side, it’s well worth the short walk down the paths to see Selfoss. As you walk back along the paths from Dettifoss towards the parking area, look for signage pointing towards Selfoss. Be careful as you follow the path parallel to the river. The Falls flow from many points as you approach so stay on the trail and watch for wet, slippery rocks.

You can also visit Selfoss from the east side. The trail is just as long from Dettifoss on the west side (about .6 of a mile) but with larger boulders that require some scrambling.

ProTip: Hafragilsfoss is another water downstream from Dettifoss. You can view these Falls from the east and west sides but it’s better from the east. There are signs as you drive away from the Dettifoss parking lot. Turn right (going north) back onto Route 862 and follow the signs. Keep in mind, this drive will take an hour, but will also land you close to the east sides of Dettifoss and Selfoss if you wanted to see those Falls from both sides. As before, check the status and conditions of Route 864.

If you choose to view Hafragilsfoss from the west side, the drive is just a few minutes from Dettifoss. However, the viewpoint is a few miles away from the Falls.

Asbyrgi Canyon

the visit t diamond

Looking out at this spectacular horseshoe-shaped canyon, you can’t help but marvel at the power of nature. (Admittedly, you’ll be doing this throughout your trip to Iceland.) The canyon is part of Vatnajokull National Park and spans more than half a mile wide and  2+ miles long. Perhaps even more impressive are the 330 feet tall cliffsides!

During the summer months, the insides of the canyon turn green from the trees that make up its center woodlands. Not surprisingly, this is also the best time to visit the canyon. There are hiking trails for all abilities and in a range of durations, including multi-day hikes. Even if you have only a short amount of time for your visit, plan to hike! It’s the best way to see Asbyrgi Canyon. Longer hikes lead to the popular Botnstjorn Pond at the end of the canyon. But, even shorter hikes come with great views of the canyon.

Here’s a map of the Asbyrgi Canyon hikes . The blue-marked trails like A2 and A3 are easy, while the red-marked trails like A4 and A7-9 are more difficult.

The Visitor’s Center is located just off Route 85 in between the northern ends of Routes 862 and 864. Route 85 is open all year, even in snowy conditions, although it’s always best to check road conditions first. There’s a turn from Route 85 onto Route 861 for a short section of road before reaching the parking area. Keep in mind, the Visitor’s Center is primarily open from May to October.

ProTip: As you travel on Route 85 towards Husavik, stop at the Hringsbjarg Cliffs scenic overlook. The observation deck offers information about the area and sweeping views of north Iceland. You might even get lucky and spot a Puffin if you visit during nesting season.

Husavik Iceland

The seaport village of Husavik is on Route 85 of the Diamond Circle. It’s nicknamed “the whale watching capital of Iceland” and with good reason. The waters of Skjalfandi Bay in Husavik harbor are home to many species of marine life, including whales like the Humpback!

This Arctic Circle-facing town may be small in size but it comes with outsized value for your time. In fact, you could easily plan to spend 1 night in Husavik and pick up your Diamon Circle loop drive the next morning. Most visitors come to Husavik for the aforementioned whale watching. Quite simply, it’s a must-do in Husavik. My Husavik whale watching tour was easily one of my most favorite things to do in Iceland.

While in town, visit Husavik’s Whale Museum, with a full-sized skeleton of a Blue Whale, the largest mammal to have lived. The wooden church in town is postcard-perfect, as are the restaurants and shops lining the harbor. Gamli Baukur along the port has fantastic local seafood dishes!

You can even escape the crowds of the Blue Lagoon and, instead, relax in the Geothermal Sea Baths on the cliffs overlooking Skjalfandi Bay!

Godafoss Waterfall

the visit t diamond

South of Husavik and west of Myvatn, the spectacular Godafoss waterfall plunges nearly 40 feet into the river below before winding its way through the canyon. What makes this “waterfall of the gods” so impressive is its horseshoe shape and falls that span roughly 100 feet wide.

Without question, Godafoss is one of the most beautiful sights to see in all of Iceland…a statement not made lightly on an island of immeasurable natural beauty. Even if you don’t plan to drive the entire Diamond Circle, don’t miss seeing Godafoss up close!

Getting to Godafoss is straightforward and clearly marked. Although if you’re driving in northern Iceland in the winter, you’ll want a 4-wheel drive vehicle and to always check the road conditions before driving. Godafoss is just off Ring Road about 35 minutes from Myvatn to the east and the city of Akureyri to the west.

There are parking areas and paths leading you closer to the falls for easy access. There are viewing points on both sides of the waterfall. If you have the time, take in the view from both sides.

North Iceland is a Must!

While other parts of Iceland continue to get the most love, northern Iceland, and in particular, the Diamond Circle has arguably some of the most spectacular sights in all of Iceland!

As you plan your Iceland itinerary, don’t miss the opportunity to spend a few days driving Iceland’s Diamond Circle.

Diamond Beach in Iceland – Home of the Stranded Icebergs

The Diamond Beach in Iceland is a natural wonder, which is hard to match in any other part of the world. Luckily, the area is incredibly close to the Icelandic main road. We dare to say it is arguably one of the most cost-effective unique experiences you can have in Iceland. It also lies close to another amazing attraction, so you’ll be able to experience more without moving around a lot.

When you travel around Iceland, you’ll be surprised as to just how many sites in Iceland are completely unique. Many attractions don’t have any counterparts in any other part of the world, and Diamond Beach in Iceland is one of them.

The constant interaction between the lagoon, ocean, and the mighty Vatnajökull glacier is astonishing. So, naturally, we decided to compile an article about this stunning area.

Diamond beach, Iceland

What is the Diamond Beach in Iceland?

The black Diamond Beach in Iceland is one of the best things you can do in Iceland . It is a completely unique experience that you simply won’t have anywhere else. The sand is pitch black, and the beach is riddled with stranded icebergs in many different shapes and sizes . The reason why it’s called Diamond Beach is because of how the icebergs look like diamonds in contrast to the black sand.

The beach sits at the outlet of Jökulsarlón – a large glacier lagoon with massive icebergs floating around.

Where is the Diamond Beach in Iceland?

Jökulsarlón ice beach is at the edge of the Vatnajökull glacier. It is a part of the Vatnajökull National Park in the southeastern part of Iceland and can easily be accessed via the main roads. That means that the best way to visit Diamond Beach will be with a car, preferably a rented car that you can explore the country with.

How to Get to the Diamond Beach in Iceland

Diamond Beach is one of many attractions around the Ring Road in Iceland . This means that it easily becomes a very natural spot to stop at, regardless of where you’re coming from in the country.

The Ring Road 1 goes around the entire island, being more or less the only road close to a highway you can find in Iceland. The nearby parking areas make it easy to make a quick detour to visit the Diamond Beach, even if it's just to stroll on the beach and touch a stranded iceberg.

the visit t diamond

Getting to the Diamond Beach from Reykjavík

Most people will start their journey to the Diamond Beach at Jökulsarlón from the capital. This is where most will rent their cars or get on their tour buses to wherever they want to go.

Unfortunately, the Diamond Beach is not close enough for any of the day trips from Reykjavík . You’ll have to book a minimum of two days if you want to comfortably go see the beach.

From Reykjavík, you follow Road 49 until you reach Road 1 where you will go south . From there, it will take you roughly five hours to reach the magnificent iceberg beach in Iceland. We recommend you turn this trip into two or three days to take the time to see the Icelandic south coast along the way.

Getting to the Diamond Beach from Vik

Vík i Myrdal is halfway between Diamond Beach and Reykjavík and is often used as a halfway stop either on the way to the beach or back. It sits on the southernmost part of Iceland and is a natural stop when you go to see attractions like Svartifoss , Seljalandsfoss, and the black sand beach Reynisfjara.

To get from Vík to Diamond Beach, all you need to do is get on Road 1 heading east and that will take you to the area in about two and a half hours.

When to Visit the Diamond Beach in Iceland

When you look at the monthly weather and temperature in Iceland , it’s easy to think that Diamond Beach will be the best in the wintertime. After all, the entire place is filled with ice, and ice likes it cold, right?

The truth is that Diamond Beach weather in Iceland is affected by the massive glacier Vatnajökull (the second largest in Europe). Another variable is the large numbers of massive icebergs floating around. The temperatures here will be pretty chilly all throughout the year, even when the sun is out.

Diamond Beach in Summer

If you are looking for a touristy Diamond Beach experience, then the summer months will be the perfect time for you to visit. Between May and November will be the time when you can get on boat tours on one of the most beautiful glacial lagoons in Iceland .

This is the time of year when you will be able to enjoy some sunsets and even see the Diamond Beach under the midnight sun. It’s a special feeling to see the low summer sun reflect off of the ice pieces on the beach.

Sunset diamond beach Iceland

Diamond Beach in Winter

If you look at Diamond Beach on an Iceland map, you’ll see that it sits right on the coastline of Iceland. This means that it takes a large portion of the rough weather coming in from the North Atlantic in the winter.

Despite that, this place can be the most beautiful spot in the world when the Diamond Beach and the Iceland Northern Lights interact . Having these lights dancing over white diamonds on a pitch-black beach is a once-in-a-lifetime sight to see.

Where to Stay near the Diamond Beach in Iceland

This glass beach in Iceland is unfortunately away from most populated areas, so the accommodation options are limited . There are, however, some accommodations nearby that you can look into if you want to stay close to the attraction.

It’s a good idea to have close by accommodation if you want to see the sunset at Diamond Beach in Iceland, especially in the wintertime.

Hotels near the Diamond Beach

These are a few hotels that are not far away from Diamond Beach:

Reynivellir – a popular guesthouse and often quite cheap.

Hali Country Hotel – either large apartments or regular hotel rooms

Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon – a little pricier.

Ekra – more a rented house than a hotel.

Skyrhúsid Guesthouse – decent price and cozy rooms.

Camping Near the Diamond Beach

Unfortunately, there aren’t many camping opportunities near Diamond Beach . If you travel along Iceland’s south coast , you’ll find more camping accommodations along the way west of Diamond Beach. Due to the Icelandic laws regarding where you’re allowed to camp, you need to stick to the designated camping areas. The closest camping areas to Diamond Beach are:

Tjaldsvaedid next to Svinafell – ca 50 kilometers away.

Skaftafell Campground – ca 56 kilometers away.

Tjaldsvaedid Myllulaekur – ca 67 kilometers away.

Camping Höfn – ca 78 kilometers away.

Vestruhorn Camping – ca 85,5 kilometers away.

Things to do near Diamond Beach, Iceland

When you have taken an icy stroll along Diamond Beach, it might be time to do something else in the vicinity. Most activities are going to be west of Diamond Beach , while the eastern part has more small stops to make on your way to Egilsstadir. Some things and places around Diamond Beach you can enjoy are:

Can You Swim at Diamond Beach, Iceland?

Technically, you can . The water around Diamond Beach isn’t known for sneaker waves and such, like Reynisfjara black sand beach . Still, we would not recommend swimming there at all. The water will be freezing , not only because it’s the North Atlantic Ocean, but also because it has a lot of ice floating around in it.

So, the answer is: yes, you can swim there at least once, but chances are that you won’t make it back to shore due to hypothermia or strong Atlantic currents.

Safety at the Diamond Beach

A general rule of thumb when you are dealing with large blocks of ice is to not climb on them , since you’re very likely to slip and hurt yourself. The chunks of ice on the Diamond Beach are also prone to be washed out to sea when the waves gain strength.

This means that a flat iceberg might become a very unwanted impromptu raft if you manage to get on top of one. The Diamond Beach is also extremely cold, so keep out of the water.

Is Diamond Beach in Iceland Worth it?

Definitely! Seeing these large icebergs in the black sand is a sight you will struggle to find anywhere else . The Diamond Beach has the holy trifecta for adventurous travelers:

Unique and cheap experience

Easily accessible with good parking

Nearby attractions (Jökulsarlon)

Even though accommodation can’t be found in the immediate vicinity, this is a perfect place to stop along Ring Road 1. It’s really close to Jökulsarlón, it sits perfectly between Höfn and Vík i Myrdal, and the parking is free, so the cost is nothing but your own time.

Diamond Beach, a Unique Experience in Iceland

If you want to have the experience of a lifetime, we strongly suggest that you visit this place. The Diamond Beach in Iceland in the summer also allows you to go on a boat tour in Jökulsarlon. You will have a perfect two-for-one experience without any unnecessary extra stops!

When you rent a car in Iceland to explore the many amazing natural wonders this island has to offer, the Diamond Beach is going to have to be one of them.

One of the most recognized landmarks in Hawaii, the Diamond Head State Monument in downtown Honolulu is my own personal Everest — one that I successfully summited! Climbing to the top of Diamond Head’s crater rim is a popular activity for out-of-state visitors as well as a favorite workout loop for locals. It’s not every day that you can boast that you’re hiking up the side of a volcano in a capital city, let alone one with incredible panoramic views, but it happens every day here.

Diamond Head is part of the system of cones, vents, and eruption flows of the Honolulu Volcanic Series. Thankfully, there’s no chance of an eruption at this state park these days! But the long-dormant crater and crater walls offer visitors spectacular views and one of the state’s most rewarding hikes.

The curious name, Diamond Head, was given to the area by 19th-century British soldiers who thought the nearby sparkling calcite crystals were much more precious. But indigenous Hawaiians call the landmark Leahi, from lae for “ridge” and ahi for “tuna.” If you use your imagination, you can see how the crater rim resembles a tuna’s dorsal fin. Today, Diamond Head is protected as part of the Diamond Head State Monument. Encompassing approximately 475 acres, it is one of the largest green zones in the American state capital.

9 Things You Need To Know Before You Visit Diamond Head

1. arrive by foot, car, or public transit.

If you’re feeling ambitious, it’s entirely possible to hike to the gates of Diamond Head State Monument from Waikiki. Depending on where you start, it could take up to an hour — and then you still have to explore the park! But more people do it than you might think, especially fitness-oriented locals as well as out-of-state visitors.

Most visitors, however, prefer to save their energy for the hike to the top of Diamond Head, and there are several ways to get to the park using other forms of transportation. For instance, the Waikiki Trolley blue line includes a stop at the gates of Diamond Head State Monument. However, it only makes financial sense to purchase a trolley pass if you plan to ride the trolley to other attractions and do some sightseeing.

Diamond Head Crater in Hawaii.

The more frugal option is to take the city bus, which costs around $3 for adults. Bus number 23 from Kuhio Avenue (toward Diamond Head) is the most direct route via public transportation. While you’ll likely spot the State Monument sign, let the driver know where you’re headed to be on the safe side. Tickets are usually good for 2 hours, so if you’re a speedy hiker and a frugal traveler, hold on to your transfer stub, and your return trip through Waikiki might just be free.

Of course, you can always drive (there is ample parking) or catch a taxi or Uber. Diamond Head State Monument isn’t very far from the Honolulu Zoo, the Waikiki Aquarium, and Diamond Head Beach Park . If you’re planning to visit these attractions during your trip to Oahu , it makes sense to do so after your Diamond Head visit, when you’re still in the neighborhood.

2. Reservations Are Essential

Diamond Head State Monument is open every day of the year, including holidays, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The latest you can enter the park to hike is 4:00 p.m. since the round trip takes between 90 minutes and 2 hours. On peak days, the park welcomes more than 3,000 people. As such, as of May 12, 2022, all out-of-state visitors must have an advanced reservation to enter Diamond Head State Monument .

Reservations can be made up to 14 days in advance for now, but the long-term plan is to change the system so reservations can be made up to 30 days in advance. Visitors are asked to arrive within 30 minutes of their reservation time. However, you must leave by the end of your reservation time. So if you are a slow stroller, make sure you’re there at the beginning of your time slot!

3. Best Time for the Diamond Head Hike: Mornings

If you’re visiting Hawaii from mainland North America and jet lag has you awake bright and early, visit the park and start hiking Diamond Head before the crowds get there. We started our Diamond Head hike not long after the park opened, and I’m so glad we did. The temperatures were relatively cool, there weren’t many people (though we were far from alone), and it was neat to see so many locals getting their workouts in. It helped me realize that Diamond Head is so much more than a tourist attraction — it’s a beloved part of the community.

4. Pay Online — But Bring Cash

Prior to the new reservation system, admission to Diamond Head State Monument was $5 per car (no matter how many people were in it) and $1 for pedestrians, and it was cash only. But the new system changes everything! Now the reservation system means you pay $5 per person in advance online, via credit card. You can also pay the $10 parking fee if you wish to park. If you have ID that proves you’re a Hawaiian resident, your entry and parking costs are free.

I highly recommend bringing along some extra money to buy some refreshing shave ice after your hike. There’s usually a food truck selling it in the trailhead parking lot and, in my opinion, it’s the best way to treat yourself after your adventure.

5. Minimal Gear Needed

In addition to a bit of money, for the hike you should bring your own water bottles (there are fountains at the beginning of the trail, but none as you ascend), a hat and sunscreen, and good walking shoes. I have to say, I did see quite a few people wearing casual flip-flops, and they were undeterred by the loose gravel and switchbacks. To each their own, but I’m glad I had my sneakers with me on the hiking trail!

6. Expect Stairs And Gravel

The trail to the summit was built in 1908 as part of Oahu ’s coastal defense system. The hike itself is only 0.8 miles each way, but you gain 560 feet in height along the way. The trail includes a concrete walkway, loose gravel and soil, a 225-foot-long tunnel (it looks pitch black as you approach it, but it is dimly lit inside), and many, many stairs. In addition to the loose gravel, there are several narrow and awkward parts of the trail, and your ankles will appreciate the extra support that tennis shoes provide.

Having not realized there were so many stairs involved — I assumed I’d be hiking up a slope, not steps — I have to admit I was worried that the Diamond Head hike would defeat me! The stairs themselves weren’t impossibly difficult, but they were harder on me because I hadn’t expected them. Now that I know what to expect, I don’t find the route nearly so intimidating. The hike to the top of Diamond Head is a workout, for sure, but it’s manageable and well worth it for the gorgeous panoramic views. A little pre-trip planning goes a long way.

7. Great Views And Incredible History

Without a doubt, the most spectacular thing you’ll see at Diamond Head State Monument is the incredible view. Locals like to say that on a clear day, there’s nowhere else on Earth where you can see so far overland. Based on my very unscientific observations, I concur! At the top of Diamond Head, all of Honolulu opens up to you. For early risers, I can’t imagine a more breathtaking place to enjoy the sunrise.

However, the land views pale in comparison to the ocean views. From crashing, deep navy blue waves to delicate shades of turquoise lapping at the shore, this is the Hawaii of your dreams — nothing but sun, sky, and surf. In the winter season, you might just see humpback whales frolicking in the distance. And at the base of Diamond Head, you’ll notice a jaunty white lighthouse. A facility of the United States Coast Guard, the lighthouse was built in 1917 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. If you think it looks familiar, that’s because it was featured on a postal stamp in 2007 ! Unfortunately, you can’t visit it, so you’ll have to enjoy the views you get from Diamond Head.

A woman at the top of Diamond Head Crater.

While I expected incredible views — and I was not disappointed — I noticed something else that I found equally intriguing. There are many objects along the way that point to the crater’s history as a military observation point. The land around Diamond Head Trail was part of a military base for decades, and artillery cannons, cement bunkers, and an observation deck were built on the crater. You can still see the remnants of Diamond Head’s past life as you complete your hike. With an odd mix of curiosity and sadness, I observed chunks of concrete and wire slowly disintegrating and rusting on the ground. How long will it be until Diamond Head swallows up its own history entirely?

If you’re interested in learning more about the fascinating history behind Diamond Head, you can visit the park’s interpretive kiosk. The staff members are extremely knowledgeable and are always eager to answer questions.

Rest assured that the trip down Diamond Head is faster and easier than the trip up, but you should still exercise caution around the steep areas and keep your eyes open for congested spots filled with tourists wielding rogue selfie sticks!

8. Things to Do After the Hike

After the hike, consider cooling off with a visit to Diamond Head Beach Park which is not connected to the Diamond Head Crater. Swimming conditions are not ideal, although it is alright for a quick dip. If you want to catch some sur, it’s a different story.

If to grab a bite to eat after the hike, head to the Rainbow Drive-In or Ono Seafood on Kapahulu Avenue for a local plate lunch and some poké. Both have a great neighborhood feel with laid-back, outdoor patio seating.

Oh, and don’t forget to get shave ice, a traditional summer treat, on your way back. For that matter, Shimazu Shave Ice is one of the best shave ice in Oahu.

9. Manage Time Strategically

Though the Diamond Head hike is less than a mile, there is about 560 feet of elevation, which means that the hike is steep and strenuous. Unless you’re an experienced hiker, you’ll need 45 to 60 minutes to reach the top.

More importantly, make sure to rest on one of the benches along the way whenever you run out of breath. Thus, you’ll have an enjoyable hike and will reach the top without getting on your last legs.

What Can I Do Near Diamond Head on Oahu, Hawaii?

Other recommended attractions near Diamond Head State Monument are the farmers’ market at Kapiolani Community College, the Honolulu Zoo, the Iolani Palace, the Waikiki Aquarium, the Ala Moana Center, and many more.

What Time Should I Climb Diamond Head?

Get there early. The best time to climb Diamond Head is at sunrise when temperatures are relatively cool and the sun shines behind your back. Coming early, on a weekday, and in the off-season will help increase your chances of avoiding the crowds of out-of-state visitors.

What To Wear When Visiting Diamond Head?

Wear lightweight, breathable clothing, and a decent pair of hiking boots for a proper grip. It can be windy and cooler at the summit so bring a light jacket or a sweater. The trail is exposed to the sun so a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are recommended.

How Much Is the Entry Fee to the Diamond Head State Monument?

The entry fee to the Diamond Head State Monument is $5 for visitors arriving on foot and $10 if you want to leave your vehicle in the parking lot. With your entry tickets, you are allowed to walk up the trail and explore other attractions at Diamond Head.

How Long Does the Diamond Head Hiking Trail Take?

Depending on your pace, the Diamond Head hiking trail typically takes around 2-3 hours. The tour covers approximately 1.6 miles and each day, thousands of people make their way to the top.

Customer reviews

Not exactly as the picture, but I love It. It looks good when I want to dress it up or casual look. The color is great, two shades makes the ring it stand out

levian.com

Love ❤️ 😍 so beautiful.. ..like all the levian i have..simply exquisite in craftsmanship, choice of diamond colors, style can either be worn at the gala or in the garden, as i have already done!!

A lovely, comfortable, sparkling ring! A pretty design of clear contrasting small white and chocolate diamonds. Be aware if you order it online that you may receive a ring with a much lighter brown stone that cannot be called chocolate. Macy’s actually has two very different looking rings with the same item number. Same design-different colors!

Absolutely gorgeous! This ring is perfect and even better in person. It sparkles in every type of light and receives many compliments. The rose gold makes both the vanilla and chocolate diamonds really stand out. Le Vian doesn't disappoint!

Absolutely Stunning! The picture doesn’t do it justice! I bought it in the rose gold online, but saw the white gold in the store also. Both are gorgeous, but I’m more of a rose gold person. If you’re still deciding, BUY IT! You won’t be sorry! This is my 2nd LeVian chocolate ring, I’m a true fan!

It’s a gorgeous ring!!! Love it 💕

Beautiful ring!

I love La avian jewelry. It has a vintage look and is such beautiful quality. Love all the La Vian rings my husband buys for me. Thank you for your stellar customer service too.

The Diamond Fund at the Kremlin

Explore Almighty Kremlin and Unique Collection of Russian Jewelers of the 18-20th centuries at The Diamond Fund (3 hours)

  • Add to wishlist

Meet your knowledgeable guide at the Alexander Garden and start your day by exploring the territory of the Almighty Kremlin - Symbol of Russia!

The Kremlin  used to be a fortress, then the residence of the Russian Tsars. After the Revolution of 1917 the USSR Government moved there. Now it is the residence of the Russian President and a unique cultural museum complex that consists of palaces, cathedrals and museums. You will tour the grounds of the Kremlin and visit its strikingly beautiful cathedrals full of ancient frescoes and icons:

  • Assumption Cathedral  where Russian tsars and emperors were crowned;
  • Archangel Cathedral  - the burial vault of the Russian tsars until 18th centuries;
  • and  Annunciation Cathedral , a home church for the royalty.

You will get to meet the 2 prominent Russian Tsars in person:  the Tsar Bell  and Tsar Cannon , the biggest in the world. Kremlin will surely reveal you some mysteries of the Russian state and soul.

Now move further to the Diamond Fund of Kremlin to deepen your knowledge of Russian history, whilst exploring the Diamond Fund: a unique collection of Russian jewellers of the 18-20th centuries. The exhibition includes items of gold and platinum, a collection of precious stones and other historical treasuries, Tsars' regalia, the crown of the Russian Empire, Russian and foreign medals, huge gold and platinum bars, giant diamonds and numerous pieces of fine jewellery. The collection was founded by Peter I, who was of the opinion that the most significant precious items should belong to the state, not to the Tsar's family. Originally, the jewels were kept in the Winter Palace and during World War I and were later carried over to the Kremlin. The permanent exhibition in the Kremlin was opened in 1967.

In two quiet and small rooms with velvet carpets the following will open to you in all their splendor:

  • The Great Imperial Crown  adorned with 5 000 diamonds of different size and made in the 18th century for the coronation of Catherine the Great.
  • Seven “Historic Stones” , among which:

- Orlov Diamond, a nearly 190-carat completely transparent and pure stone that decorates the Imperial gold scepter. - Shah Diamond, in ancient times known as the Prince’s Stone. This nearly 90-carat perfectly pure crystal can tell its own story thanks to the Arabic inscriptions graved on it. - Table Portrait Diamond, the largest existing flat stone of 25 carat in the world. Cut in India, it now adorns a massive golden bracelet with the image of an Emperor. - Ceylonese Sapphire, a magnificent 260-carat deep-blue stone, decorating a 19th-century brooch.

  • A collection of  extraordinary large uncut diamonds  – there are over 900 stones!
  • 18th and 19th century absolutely stunning decorative jewelry , including diamond, sapphire and ruby brooches, bracelets, earrings and diadems as well as a collection of the 20th century jewelry made specifically for the Russian Diamond Fund by the order of the Soviet government.
  • Collection of Platinum and Gold nuggets , many of which have a name. An attentive visitor can easily find Camel, Boot, Horse Head and Mephisto nuggets and the Big Triangle – the biggest gold nugget of 36 kg found in Russia.

March 19, 2024 Israel-Hamas war

By Chris Lau, Antoinette Radford, Maureen Chowdhury and Tori B. Powell , CNN

Our live coverage of Israel's war in Gaza has moved here .

UK says its largest aid package to Gaza has arrived

From CNN's Mia Alberti

The UK's largest aid delivery to Gaza has entered the enclave, the British Foreign Office said Wednesday.

More than 2,000 tonnes of food aid that entered Gaza via the Jordanian land corridor were being distributed by the World Food Programme and will feed "more than 275,000 people," the office said.

The delivery includes fortified wheat flour for use in bakeries, hot meals and Ready To Eat (RTE) food parcels.

"The food parcels will be used to feed more than 275,000 people in Gaza. Each food parcel is designed for family of five and consists of canned vegetables, meat and fish, and date bars. The parcel can meet half of the daily calorie needs of the family for 15 days," the Foreign Office said.

The delivery adds to a previous batch of 150 tonnes of UK-funded relief items, including blankets and tents, which arrived last Wednesday and will be distributed by UNICEF, the Foreign Office said.

"A full UK field hospital run by UK-Med has also arrived in Gaza and is now operational and providing life-saving care", the office said.

Imminent famine: The aid comes amid warnings of imminent famine among Palestinians. Foreign Secretary David Cameron said the UK continues "to push Israel to allow more crossings to be open and for longer, and for healthcare, water, and sanitation to be restored."

Cameron also urged Israel to open a "land crossing in the north" and allow the entry of more UN staff to facilitate the delivery of aid in Gaza to tackle "the devastating and growing humanitarian crisis."

Israel's operation at Al-Shifa Hospital continues as thousands shelter in complex. Here's the latest

From CNN staff

Smoke is seen billowing in the vicinity of the Al-Shifa hospital complex in Gaza on March 18.

Israeli troops continue "precise operations" at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza "to thwart terrorism," according to the Israel Defense Forces and the Israel Security Agency (ISA), known as Shin Bet.

Gaza Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmoud Basal told CNN on Tuesday that the hospital is "besieged" by Israeli forces , while Israel has said the site was being used by "senior Hamas terrorists."

Thousands of people are currently sheltering in the hospital complex and are in dire conditions .

CNN has reached out to the Israel Defense Forces for comment on its ongoing operations at the hospital and in the surrounding neighborhood.

Here are the latest headlines:

  • Warnings about hunger: Famine is set to break out in northern Gaza between now and May, a United Nations-backed report warns. UN human rights chief Volker Turk also said that Israel's sustained restrictions on aid into Gaza may amount to the war crime of starvation . Meanwhile, the World Health Organization issued another stark warning about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the strip, with a spokesperson saying that a growing number of infants are on the “brink of death” from acute hunger.
  • Rafah operation: US and Israeli officials will likely meet in Washington next week to discuss alternatives to a planned military ground offensive in Gaza's southern city of Rafah, where about 1.5 million displaced people are sheltering.
  • Ceasefire talks: An Israeli delegation left Qatar after one day of indirect talks with no breakthrough in a ceasefire-hostages deal, but mediators are "cautiously optimistic" by the restart of discussions. The indirect talks, held between Israel and Hamas under Qatari and Egyptian mediation, were the first to be held in Doha at that level in months. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will visit Saudi Arabia and Egypt this week for talks as well.
  • Hostages: The IDF sent text messages to Palestinians in Gaza on Tuesday offering cash in exchange for any information about Israeli hostages. A CNN journalist in Gaza received the message in Arabic on their phone.
  • In the occupied West Bank: The Israeli Security Agency said that a Palestinian man was shot dead at the Gush Etzion intersection south of Jerusalem on Tuesday after opening fire on two of its personnel. The official Palestinian news agency WAFA said that a Palestinian man was seriously wounded after being shot by Israeli forces near the Gush Etzion junction, but that Palestinian medical sources had not yet confirmed his death.
  • Officials meet: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to address Senate Republicans during their closed-door conference lunch on Wednesday via video, according to a person familiar with the matter. Elsewhere, defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will host Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant at the Pentagon next week, according to a defense official.

Netanyahu will address US Senate Republicans via video on Wednesday

From CNN's Manu Raju

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaks to the media on March 16, 2023, in Berlin, Germany.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to address Senate Republicans during their closed-door conference lunch tomorrow via video, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Netanyahu’s appearance tomorrow comes as Senate Republicans have rallied around him after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called Netanyahu an obstacle to peace last week.

Netanyahu was invited by Sen. John Barrasso last week to address Senate Republicans during their annual retreat but he couldn’t make it.

US defense secretary will host Israeli defense minister at the Pentagon next week

From CNN's Haley Britzky

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin (L) and Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant give a joint press conference in Tel Aviv on December 18, 2023.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will host Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant at the Pentagon next week, according to a defense official.

“The two leaders will discuss a range of topics, including efforts to secure the release of all hostages held by Hamas, the need for more humanitarian aid to reach Palestinian civilians, and plans to ensure the safety of the more than 1 million people sheltering in Rafah while ensuring Hamas can no longer pose a threat to Israel,” the official said.

The official added the meeting comes after Austin extended an invitation for an official visit, and “is separate from the meeting announced yesterday following a call with President Biden and Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu, in which the prime minister agreed to send a senior interagency team composed of military, intelligence and humanitarian officials to Washington.”

CNN  previously reported  that Netanyahu agreed to send the delegation to discuss Israel’s impending operation in Rafah, and concerns for the more than a million Palestinian civilians in the city.

Al Jazeera journalist describes detention by Israelis at Al-Shifa Hospital

From CNN's Abeer Salman

An Al Jazeera journalist and two men he was working with described their experience after Israeli troops raided the Al-Shifa Hospital complex in northern Gaza in the early hours of Monday.

Journalist Ismail Al Ghoul told CNN he and his team had been detained for 12 hours and were stripped to underwear and blindfolded throughout, despite the rain and cold.

One member of the team, Ahmad al-Harazin, said “while we were sitting [there], the [Israeli] army suddenly raided and arrested us. God Almighty kept us safe. And we were released.”

In a statement Monday, Al Jazeera alleged Al Ghoul and his team were detained and “severely beaten” before being taken to an undisclosed location.

Samer Tarazi, another member of the team, said they were surprised by the arrival of Israeli troops at around 2 a.m.

CNN reached out to the Israel Defense Forces about the arrest of Al Ghoul and his colleagues, but on Tuesday the IDF responded that they had no record of his detention.

The IDF said later Tuesday that its units were continuing operations at the hospital and had “apprehended dozens of prominent terrorists in Hamas and Islamic Jihad.”

Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the Hamas Political Bureau, said the Israeli operation around Al-Shifa “reflects the occupation leaders’ attempt to sabotage the negotiations taking place in Doha.”

Haniyeh alleged that the Israelis’ “targeting of police officers and members of the government administrative agencies in the Gaza Strip demonstrates his attempt to spread chaos and perpetuate bloodshed” in Gaza.

Artillery launches from Lebanon landed in Israel on Tuesday, IDF says

From CNN’s Amir Tal and Charbel Mallo

Artillery launches from Lebanon landed in several areas in Israel throughout the day on Tuesday, according to a statement from the Israel Defense Forces.

IDF fighter jets struck "Hezbollah military compounds" in the areas of Ayta ash Shab, Meiss El Jabal, and Al-Adisa and "additional Hezbollah terrorist infrastructure was struck in the areas of Naqoura and Kfarkela," the statement said.

Hezbollah confirmed they launched eight attacks in Israel on Tuesday — seven against Israeli military targets and one on the Zaraite settlement. The attacks were "in response to the Israeli attacks on villages and civilians," Hezbollah said.

The IDF statement said "artillery struck the sources of the fire."

"A suspicious aerial target crossed from Lebanon into Israeli territory" in the area of Yiftach, a kibbutz in northern Israel, and was "successfully intercepted by the IDF Aerial Defense Array," the statement said.

Two IDF soldiers sustained moderate injuries and were taken to a hospital to receive medical treatment, the IDF said.

Israel and Lebanon have engaged in crossfire on their borders the last few months.

Netanyahu confidant and Israeli national security adviser will visit DC to discuss Rafah operation

From CNN's Alex Marquardt and Sahar Akbarzai

Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer (L) and Israeli National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi.

One of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s closest confidants, Ron Dermer, and Israel's national security adviser Tzachi Hanegbi will be heading to Washington, DC, to meet with US officials, according to a statement from Netanyahu's office obtained by CNN.

The statement did not say which US officials the Israeli delegation will meet with or when the visit will happen. The White House said earlier Tuesday that it expects the visit to happen early next week .

Dermer is currently a member of Israel’s war cabinet and a former ambassador to the United States.

The US has been calling on Israel to explain how it intends to keep safe over 1 million Palestinians who are seeking refuge in southern Gaza, as Israel warns that it will soon launch a military offensive into Rafah. So far, US President Joe Biden's administration says a plan has not been presented.

On Monday, US national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters Biden had asked Netanyahu to send a team to Washington “to hear U.S. concerns about Israel’s current Rafah planning and to lay out an alternative approach that would target key Hamas elements in Rafah and secure the Egypt-Gaza border without a major ground invasion.”

But the Israeli statement Tuesday said that Netanyahu “is determined to act in Rafah in order to finally eliminate the remaining Hamas battalions, while providing humanitarian solutions to the civilian population.”

The Israeli delegation will be accompanied by a representative — who was not named — for Israel’s Coordination of Government Actions in the Territories, the statement said.

WHO warns growing number of infants in Gaza are on the "brink of death" due to lack of food

From CNN’s Ibrahim Dahman

Feda al-Zahhar takes care of her 4-month-old baby as the family struggles to survive in a makeshift tent under difficult conditions on February 29.

The World Health Organization issued another stark warning about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza and a spokesperson on Tuesday said a growing number of infants there are on the “brink of death” from acute hunger.

"What doctors and medical staff are telling us is, more and more, they are seeing the effects of starvation; they’re seeing newborn babies simply dying because they (have) too low birth weight," WHO spokesperson Dr. Margaret Harris said.

While young children and infants are among the least able to cope with chronic hunger, the WHO says there is a rising number of dangerously underweight pregnant women, as well.

"This is entirely man-made, everything we're seeing medically; this was a territory where the health system functioned well," Harris said.

The WHO was aiming to build emergency malnutrition stabilization centers in Gaza, but progress had been hampered by a lack of security. One center had been established in southern Gaza, and the WHO is attempting to establish one in northern Gaza, “but we can’t bring them in at the scale and to the people without the access and the safety. So there is no answer until there’s a ceasefire,” Harris said.

Beautifully displayed in a black room with floodlit cabinets.Armed guards in suits patrol. The displays I saw at the Kremlin are the best of any museum. Careful thought has gone into the mounting and lighting. This is only part of the collection the bulk was sold by the Bolsheviks in 1924. The fools didnt realise their value

This was one of the highlights of our visit to Moscow; another was the Moscow Chamber Amoury Museum collection, housed in the same building but a separate exhibit and entry fee. These two are not to be missed. Sadly, it's not possible - for security reasons - to take photographs of either collection. Although the diamond fund isn't huge, it makes up for its size with its beauty and the sheer number and sizes of the diamonds and other precious stones used to make jewellery, crowns, orbs, scepters, etc. The crown jewels are simply stunning.

This was the highlight of my visit to Moscow; first you pay to enter the Kremlin; then you pay to enter the Armoury; then you pay to enter the Diamond Fund. When all is said and done it is worth the visit. Though much of the collection has been sold off, what remains is fantastic. The imperial treasures are fantastic (though I would say not as nice as the British in the Tower of London). Do visit, even though it is a hassle, and pre-purchase of tickets is recommended (check with your hotel before you go to Moscow...you don't want to miss it because it is sold out).

Wow - these diamonds are something else! Found the security a bit intimidating, but was worth it. The fund only has two rooms, so is quite small, but the diamonds are fantastic. There is plenty of time to look and admire. Whilst we were there the security were constantly telling people to be quiet - I guess so that you could look without being distracted by people talking. The fund closes for lunch from 1.00pm-2.00pm.

What can I say!! The jewellry from bygone eras is fabulous. Amazing Faberge and do look out for the pearly tiara - wow.

This is a great exhibit. You are able to see all of the jewels, gold, and platinum very well and spend time in front of each. Only a few are admitted at the same time so it does not feel crowded. No conveyor belt like T the Tower of London.

Torrid all spring, Mariners’ Mitch Haniger adds an exclamation point

Back with the Seattle Mariners after a year away, Mitch Haniger has been turning the hands of time back all spring training.

Mariners prospect’s hilarious booth visit ‘all-time’ moment for Goldsmith

So on the final day in Arizona for the M’s before packing up for the road, it’s only fitting that the former All-Star put one last exclamation point on his torrid run through Cactus League play.

Hitting sixth in the lineup and playing right field Sunday against the Chicago Cubs, the 33-year-old Haniger opened the day with his third double of the spring, this one coming against veteran Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks.

Haniger was just getting started, though.

In his second trip to the plate, Haniger jumped all over something slow and hanging from Hendricks for a no-doubt homer to left-center at Peoria Stadium.

The video is certainly worth a watch, because M’s star Julio Rodríguez happened to be on the mic with the ROOT Sports announce team at the time, and his reaction was certainly entertaining.

In fact, Rodríguez was talking about Haniger right up until the swing, and he never missed a beat.

“What he’s doing for us right now” – cue the crack of Haniger’s bat – “look at that. Look at that. That’s gone. That is gone – I’m not leaving the mic now,” Rodríguez exclaimed.

Big spring for Seattle Mariners’ Haniger

Sunday’s homer was Haniger’s fifth of the spring, which not only leads the Mariners but is tied for fifth in all of baseball . Making that all the more impressive is the fact that Haniger’s 36 plate appearances at the time of the homer were at least five less than any of the 14 other players with as many or more homers than him this spring.

Following a walk and a groundout in Haniger’s next two PAs, his line for the spring sits at a .429 average, .487 on-base percentage and .943 slugging percentage for a 1.430 OPS.

Around MLB: Top prospects make rosters, plus signings and injury updates

Now, we all know spring training stats aren’t the best predictor of future success, but it at least seems clear that Haniger is in a great spot going into the season. Health has always been a key storyline in his career – he’s played at least 100 games in a season only twice since debuting in MLB in 2016, and he was limited to just 61 games with the San Francisco Giants in 2023.

When Haniger has been able to stay on the field, though, he’s produced. When he appeared in 157 games for the Mariners in 2018, he made the American League All-Star team and set career-highs with a slash line of .285/.366/.493, an .859 OPS and 38 doubles. And when he played in 157 games again in 2021, he set two more career-high marks: 39 home runs and 100 RBIs.

Haniger has been candid since returning to Seattle in a January trade that he had been hoping to put on an M’s uniform again before his playing days are over. If his spring is any indication, the return may be right on time for both the player and the team.

More: Haniger feels more comfortable back with Seattle Mariners

The M’s are set to go to San Diego’s Petco Park for two last spring games against the Padres on Monday and Tuesday, then will start the MLB regular season at 7:10 p.m. Thursday at home against the Boston Red Sox. Radio coverage of each of those games, and every game this M’s season, can be found on Seattle Sports 710 AM and streaming on the Seattle Sports app.
