Why TFT is the best in youth travel

Local experiences.

Our mission is authentic travel. We partner with local experts to create enriching experiences that teach teens to be savvy travelers. Every program is designed to be hands-on—emphasizing doing and feeling, in addition to just seeing, so teens discover what it means to live like a local in every country we visit.

Small and Diverse

Group sizes of 16-24 students allow us to travel comfortably and to make real connections to each other and the host community. Participants come from a mix of different states, regions, and countries. We also welcome solo travelers — 75% of our teens join us without a friend!

Transformative Teen Travel

Travel isn’t just about new places; it’s about new perspectives. We encourage teens to step outside their comfort zone and into cultural immersion. They leave our programs with a better understanding of the world and with the confidence to keep exploring!

The Most Variety

We offer more programs in more destinations than any other teen travel company. With over 100 programs and 40+ countries to choose from, you’re sure to find a program that’s the perfect fit.

Travel with us and discover why we are consistently winning awards for Top Youth Travel Organization.

"Finding your program was a gift! It is the BEST opportunity out there for children to travel the world with like-minded peers & reasonable responsible and fun-loving young adults who want to go and explore these incredible cultures and countries. I appreciated how clear you made it that kids can come without friends and a willingness to make new friends. The trip had it all… adventure, history, independence, amazing people, great food, and beautiful lodging all while keeping mom and dad at home informed and feeling like all is well with their child as they grow and experience this incredible gift of grace. I am very grateful for you all and the HUGE team that makes this program work so smoothly. Thank you tons and tons. Travel on and keep up the great work!!!" Parent Europe for Older Teens: Prague, Austria, Slovenia & Croatia
"This is simply one of the best things we ever did for Ethan. That first trip opened him to a new world. Different cultures, food, diversity, sights, relationships, team building, confidence, independence...only a few of the positive gains for Ethan. Now, he is off to George Washington University with confidence, excitement, and an awareness for others for which we are so grateful. We are pleased and appreciative beyond words to be a member of the TFT family for a lifetime!" Diana S. Paoli, PA
"Thank you for giving Kat such a great experience. She had a wonderful time. You guys are terrific. The great parental bonus -- and I'm sure you hear this all the time -- is the photographs and the daily email. We get to see what the kids are seeing and we get to see the group and we get to see our teen. What could be better? Viewing the pictures became our evening ritual: out on the deck overlooking suburbia, sipping cold drinks, and oohing and ahhing over the photos, feeling almost like we were there. I'm sure you're awash in praise like this -- as you should be. Kat had such an enriching trip. Thank you very much! With any luck she'll be back next summer." Tom and Madora K. Old Lyme, CT
"I have traveled with TFT for four summers now, exploring Costa Rica, Croatia, Fiji and Greece. These trips have been the highlight of my summers. They have broadened my horizons and strengthened my confidence. Going on these trips and meeting new people changed how I view the world. I love having conversations with locals and people I meet along the way. The small TFT groups and the knowledgeable and enthusiastic group leaders make for a fun and eye-opening experience. What sets TFT apart is that we immerse ourselves in the culture and we are not just tourists. We meet locals, hear stories about their lives, and it is truly invigorating. Travel For Teens has given me so much more than fun memories over the summer. They have given me the ability to be comfortable talking to anyone, being in new places, having a widened perspective on other cultures, and to be independent. On my Costa Rica and Fiji trips, we volunteered with school children. In a very short time we made deep connections that I will always cherish. I feel so fortunate to have had my eyes opened through TFT to so many beautiful places and memorable people." Anna F. Basking Ridge, NJ

Put the Camera Down: A Guide for Navigating and Practicing Travel Photography Ethics

Living in a hyper-digital world, many of us try to capture in images our travels, experiences, and the people we meet without ever thinking twice. Find Wilderness & Adventure Summer Camps

Select region, adventure - travel camps.

Theres a massive world outside of your neighborhoodgive your kids the chance to see it! Youth travel programs for children and teens create opportunities for your son or daughter to spend their summer exploring a new part of the planet. Travel broadens the mind and encourages kids to build independence and develop new skills as they venture out of their comfort zones. Learn more about what your child has to gain by attending camp in a different territory.

Go Where You Want To

There are enough travel-based adventure camps for your kids to work their way across the globe summer after summer. Although most of the camps in our directory stay within the United States or Canada, there are also camps that are located in or organize trips to Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Travel camps give your children and teens the chance to tour the world in a safe and supervised setting.

Adventure Activities

While sightseeing and simply living in a new environment are huge parts of the travel camp experience, theres much more in store for your campers. Different camps offer a variety of activities to help your kids learn new things and hone their talents while theyre away from home.

Many travel camp programs include traditional camp activities like  hiking ,  rafting , and  horseback riding . Some place more emphasis on  wilderness tripping and  teaching survival skills , while others focus on adrenaline-boosting pastimes like  surfing or  mountain biking , depending on the terrain. Travel camps can be just as educational as they are funyour child can learn a new language or  develop their artistic interests by soaking up another regions culture.

Student Travel Programs

Adventure camps are as great for a whole class as they are for individuals. If youre a teacher or high school administrator, consider summer travel programs to give your students the chance to keep learning and growing together outside of their usual academic setting. For many students, travel camp is one of the last great opportunities to bond with the friends they grew up with before college takes everyone in new directionstheres no distance too great for a memory.

Search for Travel Camps

Browsing our camp directory is the first step toward expanding your childs horizons. The map provides an overview of the wide variety of destinations you can introduce your kids to this summer. When youve decided on a region, go through the list until you find the right activities and specific locations for your family. Few things are more exciting for kids and teens than a summer tripat travel camp, your explorer can truly make the most of their break from school.

FLYTE

Foundation for Learning & Youth Travel Education

youth international travel programs

My future goals are to help my community with any of the work that I do. This FLYTE trip helped me achieve that because I have realized how similar my community is with the community of Cartagena, Columbia. We can use other cities from different countries to help each other with the issues we are going through. – Veronica, FLYTE alum

Dear FLYTE Community,

Thank you for all that you’ve done to empower youth, like Veronica, from underserved communities through travel for the past seven years.

Together, we sent 100 students to travel nearly half a million miles around the world. For many, their FLYTE trip was the first time they had the chance to get on a plane and explore the world. That’s 100 lives opened up to new perspectives and possibilities.

We have learned a lot as an organization these past seven years. Even though the work of increasing equity in the travel space remains paramount, the unfortunate reality is that the costs and resources required to operate FLYTE trips have increased, causing us to reconsider if the organization’s current model—to serve teachers across the United States and offer trips globally—could be sustained and scaled.

After much reflection, deliberation, and exploring many other alternatives, FLYTE’s leadership team has made the difficult decision to sunset FLYTE’s operations and close the organization. It was a hard decision but, after turning over every possible stone, we realized it was the only option available to us.

We made a huge impact during the last few years and we’re super proud of that. After all, we’ve sent over a hundred kids overseas, many of whom are now college graduates, have gone traveling, started their own community initiatives, and all of whom have a passport now. The work we have done as a community has changed lives.

However, this work is far from over: equitable access to travel remains important for building a world where all youth grow into empowered, conscientious global citizens who can be all they can be. One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned from FLYTE’s tenure is the power of the collective to make change happen.

We invite you to follow, support, and donate to organizations that share a similar mission as FLYTE’s: to create travel opportunities where none currently exist. We have had the opportunity to collaborate with some of the organizations below. There are also many other teachers, community members, and organizations focused on developing leadership in youth through travel, and we encourage you to seek out locally-led initiatives in your community. Immense gratitude to them for continuing to move this work forward.

We gave them the world.

In gratitude,

The FLYTE Team

We are ICES

ICES is an international nonprofit youth exchange organization committed to educational study abroad programs. For over three decades ICES has promoted a more peaceful world by advancing international awareness and cultural understanding to thousands of American families and exchange students from all over the world.

International Cultural Exchange Services (ICES) was founded in 1991 by John J. Crist, as the President/ CEO he has worked in the U.S. as well as Sweden, Spain, Brazil and England and has been in the student exchange industry for over 40 years.

The ICES staff truly understands the challenges that exchange students may face, many of our team members have lived abroad and learned another language while overcoming cultural differences. This understanding and compassion is transmitted through ICES’ exceptional customer service.

As the global community we live in becomes increasingly interdependent and subject to change, today’s young people will face numerous challenges on the journey to becoming tomorrow’s leaders. We believe the foreign student exchange experience helps young people of all nationalities embrace those challenges and discover new opportunities that will help them dream and achieve more than they ever thought possible.

10 Youth Programs for International Students

Table of Contents

Those looking for youth programs for international students can take advantage of this comprehensive guide. We have listed some of the most popular youth programs that provide opportunities for participants from all over the world. By applying to one of the following initiatives, you will have the opportunity to gain competence in academic, social and vocational areas while building connections to the global community and peers.

Youth Programs for International Students

What is A Youth Program?

Youth programs are geared toward those between the ages of 10 and 25 and are meant to be fun and educational. Recreation, social life, prevention, intervention, or education are all common themes in the activities mentioned.

Youth programs may include athletics, religion, community involvement, youth activism, youth service, or outdoor education. Meanwhile, youth empowerment, consumer rights, youth-led media, and youth rights are just a few of the issues addressed.

Depending on the area, culture, class, education, and values of the persons and organizations engaged, youth program focuses and activities might vary widely. These programs are offered by government agencies, non-profit groups, and corporations around the globe.

Here are some youth programs for international students worth checking out:

1. UNESCO Youth Programme

As part of its youth program, UNESCO works with young people to promote social innovation and change, engage them fully in their countries’ growth, eradicate poverty and inequality, and cultivate a culture of peace. Some of its well-known projects are the Global Youth Community (GYC) and Youth As Researchers (YAR).

The UNESCO youth-to-youth collaboration and intergenerational learning are key goals of GYC, which strives to raise the profile of young people’s activism and the work of young change-makers. People between the ages of 18 and 35, as well as youth-led groups working in areas under the purview of UNESCO, are encouraged to apply.

On the other hand, to undertake research on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the young population and their responses to these challenges, YAR’s global project on COVID-19 interacts and engages with young people. To become a participant in the YAR program, you must submit a content and share your experience.

2. Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program (AIYEP)

Youth (aged 21 to 25) from both Australia and Indonesia are brought together through the Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program (AIYEP), which was started in 1982. Participants will have the opportunity to expand their intercultural competence, professional experiences, and global networks as a result of their participation in this activity.

Virtual job experience, educational and cultural performances, and high-level guest speakers will be offered to participants during the program. They will also collaborate on a project of mutual interest to themselves and the bilateral relationship.

Eighteen Indonesians and eighteen Australians will spend seven weeks (November to January) together engaging with each other, alumni, and others who wield influence and expertise in the academic, corporate, community, and diplomatic worlds of Australia and Indonesia.

3. International Youth Initiative Program (YIP)

Young people aged 18 to 28 can participate in the YIP in Sweden, a 10-month societal entrepreneurship training program. It provides a comprehensive educational experience that helps students have a better grasp of the world and their own selves. This effort aims to empower young people to take personal and communal action in the face of today’s global circumstances.

Experts, facilitators, and innovators work with up to 40 participants to learn, create, and organize. For young people who want to learn more about the world around them, YIP’s curriculum provides a framework for them to do so.

To enroll in the program, you must be between the ages of 18 and 28. For the duration of the YIP program, each participant is charged SEK 100,000. Included are tuition, textbooks, supplies, meals, lodging, and all related travel expenses. Applicants will be approved as they come in, and the process will continue as long as they meet the eligibility requirements.

4. Youth International

Youth International is a program that blends international travel, cross-cultural exchange, homestays, volunteer work, and outdoor activities to provide an unforgettable learning experience. Since 1997, it has been taking groups on educational excursions around the world, and its single-country programs last around a month.

The trips begin in late November and end in late April twice a year. Traveling with two group leaders, fourteen young people between the ages of 18 and 25 visit one of four destinations: Nepal, Kenya, Ecuador, or India.

Anyone between the ages of 18 and 25 is eligible to apply to participate in a Youth International gap year program. As long as there remain open slots on the squad, applications will be welcomed. It is completely free to apply.

5. Rotary Youth Exchange

By bringing young people together, Rotary Youth Exchange works to create a more peaceful world. Students learn a new language, encounter a new culture, and become genuinely global citizens as a result of this program. Rotary clubs from all over the world fund youth programs for international students between the ages of 15 and 19.

As a result of their participation in an exchange program, high school students have the opportunity to gain valuable life skills such as leadership, cultural sensitivity, and a global perspective. There are no additional costs for housing or meals. However, the cost of a round-trip ticket and travel insurance are normally the responsibility of students in most programs.

The candidates range in age from 15 to 19 and are active in their schools and communities as well as in sports and other activities. Contact your local Rotary club to learn more about exchange opportunities and the application process.

Volunteer Programs in Moscow, Russia

Moscow is one of the largest and most influential cities in all of Europe, and has been at the center of much of the continent’s recent historical developments. Yet like any megacity, Moscow has its fair share of urban problems too. It is one of the most expensive cities in the world, which makes it hard for many of the city’s less fortunate citizens to get by. Volunteering in Moscow is your opportunity to experience life in one of the world’s most impressive cities while giving back your time to help make it a more livable place for all.

Many volunteer projects in Moscow are devoted to working with the city’s overlooked population who often live in poverty. Placements working with the elderly , disabled , and war veterans , for example, are all common to find in Moscow, giving you a great opportunity to interact with minority segments of the local population. You can also find work in soup kitchens and orphanages around the city, spending time further caring for and serving the needy.

Volunteer teaching placements are also quite popular in Moscow, as the need for native English speaking educators is increasing with the rate of globalization. You can teach English at all levels, working with either adults or children in a variety of settings. In addition, other youth development placements such as volunteering at summer camps , community centers , or in childcare are readily available too.

Many volunteer abroad programs in Moscow will offer you Russian language courses as part of the experience, since you will likely be interacting with many locals who do not speak English well. Volunteer placements in Moscow tend to last a minimum of two weeks or up to one full year , depending your availability and flexibility. Programs are offered year-round, though most volunteers choose to go in the summertime because winters in Moscow can be extremely cold!

With over 12 million inhabitants, Russia’s capital is truly a spectacle to behold.  From Saint Basil’s Cathedral to the Kremlin to the Ostankino tower, the architecture and historical life of this city will not fail to breathe wonder into the volunteer abroad.

Moscow may be a huge city, but you will have no problem getting around. The local metro system is the fourth largest in the world, and boasts close to 200 stops located around the metropolitan area. Moscow is also a major transportation hub, making travel to nearby cities such as St. Petersburg a breeze by train.

Undoubtedly the most challenging part about moving to Moscow for many is the long, frigid winters. Moscow is the coldest big city on earth, with average temperatures during winter settling around 20°F. If you are volunteering year-round, safe to say you will want to bring a winter coat.

Most organizations will not require you to know Russian in order to volunteer abroad in Moscow, but speaking at least a little bit of the language will help you a tremendous amount in everyday life outside your volunteer project. Not only will you save yourself a whole lot of time and confusion, but you will be able to interact with locals on a more genuine level too!

Moscow, as it were, is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in (all the more reason why volunteers are needed to help alleviate the burdens of poverty). It will not be a cheap trip, but chances are that your volunteer abroad program may help cover the costs by offering room and board and in return for your services. Different programs vary significantly in their expenses, so take some time researching which is the best fit for you (and your wallet).

Housing is expensive and hard to come by in Moscow, so many volunteers abroad opt to live in a homestay with a local host family. This is a great opportunity to immerse yourself intimately in the Russian culture, and will help ease your transition smoothly into life in Moscow.

You will likely need to apply for a visa before volunteering abroad in Moscow, though the specific type will vary depending on your program duration and your home country. Talk to your volunteer program about what type of visa you will need, and also check out our Embassy Directory for more information from your local Russian consulate.

Make a Difference. Volunteering in Moscow you will be working hand in hand with locals to help better the lives of the city’s less fortunate. It is a rare opportunity to experience life in one of the world’s most unique and important cities while also contributing something back.

Learn Russian. Russian is one of the most highly sought-after languages by employers, and being adept in the language will make you a very intriguing candidate for jobs of all types. Make the effort to learn as much as you can while volunteering abroad in Moscow!

Expand your Horizons. Russian culture is as vast and impressive as the geography of the country itself, and safe to say you will take a lot away from immersing yourself in Moscow city life. You will also meet and make friends from not only Russia, but from all over the world.
