How Many Days in Lucerne?

With so much to discover, you may be wondering how many days to spend in Lucerne. This city is one of the most beautiful in Europe, and with so much on offer, you are guaranteed to fall in love with Lucerne and its beautiful surroundings.

If you are passing through and can only spend 1 day in Lucerne, don’t worry. You can still visit the central highlights, wander through the old town and sample some traditional Swiss Fondue.

However, 2 days in Lucerne will allow you to see the main attractions without feeling rushed and enjoy some of the hidden gems along the way.

Ideally, you would spend 3 days exploring Lucerne. This is the perfect amount of time to soak up the Swiss atmosphere, discover the best of the city and take a day trip to a nearby town, city or nature spot.

Town of Lucerne

Getting To & Around Lucerne

Lucerne is located in the centre of Switzerland, surrounded by several major cities with excellent transport links.

Although this city does not have an airport of its own, the closest international airport is Zurich Airport, which is around 65 km away. Zurich Airport offers a wide range of international flights, but if Zurich is inconvenient for you, Bern and Basel’s airports are also nearby. You can take a direct train, bus or taxi to Lucerne from the airport.

Switzerland has an excellent public transportation system. Trains are punctual, clean, and comfortable. You can purchase a Swiss Travel Pass , which allows unlimited travel on buses, trains, and even boats throughout Switzerland, including the trip from Zurich Airport to Lucerne.

Lucerne is well-connected by train to various cities in Switzerland and across Europe. Direct trains run from major Swiss cities such as Zurich, Bern, Basel , Interlaken and Geneva .

You can also take a train from other European cities such as Milan , Paris , and Munich – though there may not be direct connections. You can view train schedules here.

Lucerne is easily accessible by car via the motorway. However, if you are driving from outside Switzerland, don’t forget to purchase a vignette before driving on any of the toll roads. The vignette is a sticker placed on your windscreen that allows you to drive on the motorways.

They are available for a fixed price (around 40 CHF) and are valid for the year of purchase. You do not have to purchase a vignette to drive in Switzerland, but if you don’t, be prepared to take your time on minor roads and over mountain passes to get to your destination.

Once you have arrived in Lucerne, the main attractions are easily walkable. By navigating the winding streets on two feet, you will discover hidden gems, local artisan shops and the best views across the lake.

1, 2 or 3-Day Lucerne Itinerary

Whether you are visiting Lucerne on a day trip as you travel through Switzerland or want to spend 3 days exploring this charming city, this itinerary will provide you with an unforgettable visit to one of the most picturesque cities in the whole of Europe.

Day 1 – Lucerne Old Town Highlights

The first day of this itinerary focuses on the Old Town of Lucerne. You can explore independently or with a guide such as on this city walking tour or this walking tour which also includes a cruise on Lake Lucerne.

Chapel Bridge

Our first stop is the iconic Chapel Bridge, the picture-postcard emblem of Lucerne. The world’s oldest Truss bridge, this is no ordinary river crossing. It is one of the most famous landmarks in Switzerland, dating back to the 14th century.

Wander across the bridge, taking in the unique triangular painted roof panels depicting scenes from Swiss and local history. The paintings were added to the bridge in the 17th century and were restored after a major fire destroyed a large section of the bridge in 1993.

Walking across is free, and there is a gift shop on the lower floor of the tower for souvenirs.

Not far from the bridge, you can also take in the beautiful Jesuit Church (Jesuitenkirche in German). This is an iconic 17th-century church with incredible baroque architecture.

Chapel bridge

Musegg Wall Towers

After viewing the city from the river, it’s time to discover a different perspective. Built in the 14th century, the Musegg wall was erected as a defence along the city’s edge. You can walk along the wall for free.

The entire stretch takes around 30 minutes and is well worth doing. Along the way, you can see the various towers and gates of the wall up close, as well as the historic wooden water conduits that run along the wall.

There are nine towers in total along the Musegg wall. Four are accessible to the public and provide magnificent views across the city, out to Lake Lucerne and beyond to the stunning Swiss Alps. The most noteworthy of these is the Zyt tower, housing the oldest clock in Lucerne, dating back to 1535.

Old Town

After viewing the winding medieval streets from above, it’s time to weave through the cobbled lanes, artisan shops and tall painted houses on foot. The Old Town of Lucerne (Altstadt) is straight out of a fairytale, with picturesque squares linked by pedestrianised streets.

It’s a haven for architecture enthusiasts, avid shoppers and history buffs and wandering around here is one of the best things to do in Lucerne.

If you want to pick up an authentic Swiss souvenir to take home, this is the perfect place to do so. With plenty of Swiss knives, watches and chocolates on offer alongside local produce and crafts.

Don’t miss the painted facades of some of the oldest buildings in Lucerne, depicting tales from the surrounding areas. The best place to start your tour of the Old Town is the Weinmarkt Square.

Formerly a fish market, this square is surrounded by painted buildings, once seats of the various guilds. On the first Saturday of every month, there is a craft fair where local artists and craftsmen gather to sell their wares.

Several guided walking tours are on offer, where you can learn more about the facades, architecture and history behind the Old Town.

Lucerne's Old Town

Lion Monument

Head out of the city to see the renowned Lion of Lucerne. Just a short walk up a hill from the Old Town, the Lion of Lucerne is a sandstone monument carved into the rockface by Bertel Thorvaldsen, a Danish sculptor, and was in 1821 as a memorial to the Swiss Guards who were killed during the French Revolution in 1792.

Overlooking a serene pond, the sculpture depicts a dying lion lying on top of a shield bearing the fleur-de-lis, the symbol of the French monarchy.  The lifelike details of the lion’s fur and facial expression make the monument an incredibly poignant and emotional memorial.

Not far from here is also the Glacier Garden Museum, which can be a worthwhile stop for those interested.

Lion Monument

Sample Lucerne’s Cuisine

Head back into the Old Town to sample some of the regional dishes. The cuisine of Lucerne, like much of Switzerland, is influenced by the country’s alpine surroundings and neighbouring countries, Germany, France, and Italy.

Alpine cuisine is traditionally homely, comforting and hearty. The region’s most famous dish is most likely the cheese fondue, a big bubbling cauldron of cheese. Usually, a mix of Gruyere and Emmental served with bread and various charcuterie.

If you are not a cheese enthusiast, you may want to try a rösti instead. This hearty dish is made from grated potatoes, fried until crispy and golden brown. It is often served as a side dish with meat or eggs.

Day 2 – Mount Pilatus & the Transport Museum

Mount pilatus .

If you are visiting Lucerne in 2 days, the second day of our Lucerne itinerary whisks you away, high up into the mountains. You can take regional transport there or organise a guided tour such as this half-day tour or this half-day tour.

An absolute must for any trip to Lucerne, the Mount Pilatus massif rises 2,132m into the clouds overlooking the city and the town of Kriens. Legend has it that this mountain range is home to dragons with healing powers, hence the mountain’s mascot, a dragon affectionately referred to as Pilu.

The journey to the mountain is an unforgettable experience involving a steam-operated paddle boat, the world’s steepest cog railway and a gondola.

It’s best to head out early to avoid the crowds during the peak summer season. If you are visiting Lucerne in 3 days you may want to avoid the weekend and keep an eye on the weather forecast to ensure you get the best views from the summit.

The views from the summit are breathtaking. You feel as if you are on top of the world. But you can enjoy more than the panoramic views whilst you are here. Several activities are available from the gondola’s first stop, Fräkmüntegg and the summit, Pilatus.

If you are an adrenaline junkie, try out the toboggan run (only open in the summer), the ziplines at the rope park or for a real adventure, you can opt for an alternative descent by tandem paragliding.

There are several cafes and restaurants available when you get peckish. Ibex bar is perfect for a quick bite, or head to the Panorama Grill for lunch with a side of unbeatable views.

You can visit Mount Pilatus all year round. Visiting during the summer months can be busy but all of the activities are open and you are more likely to be able to experience the incredible views. The winter transforms these mountains into snow-covered wonderland.

If you are visiting during the winter months you can even order a fondue to enjoy in the gondola on the way up. There’s nothing more Swiss than melted cheese whilst you look out on mountains covered in snow.

Mount Pilatus

Transport Museum

After spending the first half of your day in the mountains, head back to Lucerne to visit one of the most famous museums in Switzerland.

The transport museum covers an area of over 20,000 square meters, making it one of the largest museums in the country. From water to air, rail to space travel, there is something for everyone to discover.

Some of the museum’s highlights include a replica of the first-ever steam engine, the world’s oldest surviving electric locomotive, and a full-scale model of a Concorde supersonic jet. You can also explore a helicopter simulator, a submarine, a planetarium, and an IMAX cinema. You can pre-book tickets here.

Enjoy Lucerne’s Waterfront

To round off your 2 days in the city of Lucerne, take an evening stroll along the waterfront. Lucerne feels particularly magical at night, with the glistening lights reflecting on the water. You can even take a short lake cruise.

There are plenty of lakefront bars and restaurants along the way, so take your pick and enjoy the sunset from a comfy terrace looking out on the lake.

Lucerne waterfront

Day 3 – Day Trip to Mt Rigi, Interlaken, Zurich, Bern or Mt Titlis

If you have 3 days, you may want to consider taking a day trip to a nearby destination.

Take the train from Lucerne to Vitznau, then hop on a cogwheel train up to Mount Rigi, taking you on a scenic journey through the mountainside, passing by lush green meadows and forests, picturesque villages, and sparkling lakes. There are also guided tours available.

Alternatively, you can don your hiking boots, pack a picnic and hike up to the mountain. You can also enjoy winter sports during the winter season or enjoy a relaxing spa day at the world-famous Rigi-Kulm Hotel.

Take a direct train from Lucerne to Interlaken, a picturesque town located between two lakes and surrounded by the Swiss Alps. There are also guided tours available.

Interlaken is a popular destination for adventure enthusiasts all year round and is commonly referred to as the adventure capital of Switzerland.

Whether you are into paragliding, whitewater rafting, skydiving, bungee jumping, hiking or winter sports. There’s something here for everyone.

Interlaken town

In just one hour by train, you can reach Bern, the capital city of Switzerland. Explore the medieval Old Town,  a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and visit the Zytglogge clock tower and the historic Bern Cathedral.

Take a stroll along the picturesque Aare River, or visit the Einstein Museum, dedicated to the famous physicist who lived in Bern. The city is also a food lovers paradise, with delicious Swiss cuisine and chocolate shops around every corner.

Zurich

The train from Lucerne to Zurich takes just 40 minutes. Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland, situated on the beautiful Lake Zurich. The city is renowned for its stunning architecture and vibrant cultural scene.

You can visit the Kunsthaus Zurich, one of Switzerland’s most important art museums, or stroll along the Limmat River.

Beautiful Zurich

Mount Titlis

Take a train from Lucerne to Engelberg, then take the Titlis Rotair, the world’s first revolving cable car, to the top of the mountain, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding Alps. There are also guided tours available.

The mountain is also a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts, with skiing and snowboarding opportunities available during winter.

The mountain is also home to the Glacier Cave, a fascinating natural wonder where you can explore ice formations below the glacier’s surface.

One day in Lucerne, Switzerland: the ultimate itinerary

Lucerne Sunset

Located at the banks of the serene Lake Lucerne, I think Lucerne is perhaps one of the hidden gems of Switzerland.

Built right at the North of the Alps with its cobblestoned streets and historical heritage, the city wins the hearts of every tourist entering its vicinity.

The best part is, even if you are running short on time, you don’t need many days to experience Lucerne to the fullest.

Unlike other popular Switzerland cities , you can fit multiple attractions in Lucerne into a one-day itinerary.

If you’re wondering how to spend a day in Lucerne, here’s my comprehensive one day in Lucerne itinerary to guide you along the way.

This is a guest post by Kyle Kroeger, an expert in Switzerland travel from ViaTravelers.

Best time to visit Lucerne

Before we dive into the itinerary, you should know the ideal time of the year for visiting the scenic city. Especially if you’re planning a one-day visit, lousy weather can drastically affect your plans.

The city experiences mild and pleasant summers from June to August. However, this is the most crowded time of the year, so I’d recommend pre-booking all your museum visits and guided tours.

If you’re targeting outdoor activities around Mt. Pilatus or Lake Lucerne , summer brings the ideal weather for such excursions.

Lucerne View

During the winter season, from November to February, the city becomes a hub for snow sports. This means that the museums and other indoor attractions are quite secluded, as everyone hits the ski slopes.

If you’re planning a trip on a budget, I’d recommend the off-season months of September and October as ideal for your Lucerne itinerary.

At this time, accommodation prices are the lowest, and you might find good deals on tickets and tour bookings as well.

How to get around Lucerne?

The commute is another crucial aspect if you’re looking to explore Lucerne in one day.

Rather than taking a rental car or a public bus, I’d suggest opting for popular tourist transport options to view the entire city on the way.

You can choose gondola or steamer rides across Lake Lucerne or even get around the city on foot to enjoy its mesmerising sights.

I recommend using a Eurail pass to arrive into Lucerne, so you can use their travel app to scan in and out of the train system to travel. It’s one of the most essential travel apps for Europe .

Where to stay in Lucerne?

If you’re only visiting Lucerne for one day, chances are you won’t have to book accommodation.

However, if you need to crash in for the night after spending a long day working your way through our Lucerne itinerary, many options are near Chapel Bridge.

Besides that, you can choose from multiple options ranging from 5-star and 3-star hotels to modest Airbnbs if you’re traveling on a budget.

Here are my top picks for Lucerne hotels:

  • Waldhotel Health & Medical Excellence: ASMALLWORLD
  • Burgenstock Hotel & Alpine Spa: ASMALLWORLD // Booking.com
  • Park Hotel Vitznau: ASMALLWORLD // Booking.com

Book with ASMALLWORLD for access to VIP benefits like free room upgrades and late room check-outs when available.

The ultimate 24-hour Lucerne itinerary

Now that you know all the details about visiting Lucerne for one day, it’s time to get started with my itinerary.

While you won’t be able to cover all its attractions within 24-hours, I’ve offered some options for each part of the day to make your trip memorable.

One day in Lucerne – early morning

The Old Town of Lucerne, set against the snow-capped mountains and a serene, expansive lake, makes for a delightful view in the early mornings. It’s the classic image of a fairytale town in Switzerland .

Although if you set off to explore the city from 5-6 am, you will find most of the museums and tourist attractions closed.

But, there are other options you can try out before the city comes to life.

Mt. Pilatus

  • Lucerne: Mt. Pilatus Cable Car, Cogwheel Train & Lake Cruise
  • From Zurich: Mount Titlis Day Tour
  • From Lucerne: Self-Guided Round-Trip Train to Mount Pilatus

Mt. Pilatus is one of the most immersive and adventurous sites to explore for nature lovers in Lucerne. The best time to visit is during the morning when the jagged mountain is void of tourist crowds.

Cable Car Lucerne

You can spend your time climbing to the top of the mountain while taking photographs and sightseeing at various viewpoints on the way.

However, if you wish to save your energy for the rest of the day, you can take other options to reach the top instead of hiking and climbing.

There are cable cars and cogwheel trains that take visitors to the peak as well. Once you reach the top, you can enjoy the breathtaking views of the city and even grab a bite of breakfast.

Visit Lake Lucerne

If you don’t want to deviate from the central city in the morning, I’d recommend visiting Lake Lucerne to enjoy the serene view.

Take a stroll along the shore and appreciate the fourth largest lake in Switzerland in its morning glamour.

Take a boat tour

  • Lucerne: 1-Hour Cruise on Panoramic Yacht
  • Lucerne: Round-Trip Catamaran Cruise on Lake Lucerne
  • Lucerne: Lake Lucerne 1st Class Cruise with Gourmet Lunch

Another option is to take a fun boating ride on an old steamer. Right next to Inseli Park, you will find a collection of vintage steamboats lined up.

These boats take visitors across the city of Lucerne and even go through the small towns along the shore.

The hour-long cruises start as early as 6am, so you can board the first trip if you’re an early bird.

One day in Lucerne – midday

After connecting with the city’s natural attributes during the early morning, you can start visiting the popular attractions around midday.

Visit The Wagner Museum

For opera-lovers, I think the Richard Wagner Museum is a must-visit in Lucerne. Built inside a 15th-century villa, the museum displays the complete life and works of the renowned artist.

You can witness everything from his letters, clothing, paintings, and musical instruments during the guided tour through the museum.

Check out the Sammlung Rosengart Museum

If it’s art that intrigues you and your family more than music, I’d recommend spending a couple of hours at the Sammlung Rosengart Museum.

The museum displays an authentic collection of priceless artworks from the 19th-20th century.

You can view the unique works of Pablo Picasso, or there are original works of other impressionist and modernist artists like Matisse, Miró, Monet, and Barque.

Walk to Chapel Bridge

After visiting the museums at Lucerne, you can head over to the Chapel Bridge and explore the city on foot before lunch if you have some time.

lucerne day trip itinerary

It is a picturesque bridge built across the Reuss River, one of the oldest wooden bridges in the world.

Covered with paintings depicting important events from Swiss history, it will help you discover the cultural essence of the city.

Once you get off the bridge, you’ll reach Kornmarkt Square. Here, you can shop for souvenirs and visit the town hall and the old clock tower.

One day in Lucerne – afternoon

After you’ve spent your morning appreciating the historical attributes of Lucerne, it’s time to sit down and relax for lunch before approaching other attractions.

Grab some lunch

To grab some delicious lunch after your tiring day, you can visit some exquisite restaurants in Old Town.

If you love European-style fine dining, I’d recommend tucking into delicious French cuisine at the Brasserie Bodu located by the river.

Some of the best dishes at the restaurant include the sea bass with vegetables and the delicious bouillabaisse.

On the other hand, those looking for some casual-style eateries can try the Soul Chicken. It is a rustic place in Old Town that serves delicious chicken dishes in a homely atmosphere.

Visit The Swiss Museum of Transport

  • Swiss Museum of Transport Full Day Pass
  • Swiss Museum of Transport Entrance Ticket (via GetYourGuide)
  • Swiss Museum of Transport Entrance Ticket (via Viator)

After lunch, there are many museums you’ll find open till 5pm. If you set out right away, you can visit the Swiss Museum of Transport located at a 30-min drive from Kornmarkt Square.

The museum displays various forms of transport to entice young learners. Additionally, there’s a planetarium and a luxury Film Theatre, one of Switzerland’s largest of its kind.

Take a walk across the Dying Lion Monument

I don’t think your Lucerne itinerary would be complete without visiting the Dying Lion Monument.

It is one of the oldest symbolic monuments in Switzerland designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen and carved by Lukas Ahorn.

Dying Lion Monument

It commemorates the 1821 regiment of the Swiss Guard. This makes it a must-visit place where tourists and locals come to pay their respects.

After enjoying the beautiful monument, you can explore the nearby museums. These include the Museum of Mirrors and the Alpineum with paintings of the Alps.

One day in Lucerne – evening

Evenings in Lucerne are rustic, romantic, and teeming with life at the same time. After a long day of exploration, here are some of my favourite options to enjoy a relaxing evening at Lucerne.

Experience authentic Swiss dining

For dinner, you can choose from prominent locations teeming with tourists or small and secluded inns, depending on your mood.

The Reussbad is a quiet, romantic restaurant located near the Nölliturm watchtower. Here, you can indulge in authentic French dishes and enjoy some exceptional wines with your food.

If you’re in the mood for music and partying while enjoying your food, the Stadkeller in Old Town is the ideal option for you.

Here, you can enjoy the performing band on stage while drinking and dancing with fellow tourists.

View the enthralling sunset at Lake Lucerne

Another popular nighttime attraction in Lucerne is the majestic sunset view at Lake Lucerne.

To get there on time, you’ll have to plan your dinner before or after the sunset and experience it in full splendor.

I would recommend grabbing an early dinner and walking over to Lake Lucerne for a relaxing stroll.

Complemented by the old city lights reflected by the tranquil waters, the sight is the most memorable end to a fun-filled day.

Moreover, there are plenty of places to sit down and recline along the shore. Take a moment to share some beautiful moments with your loved ones.

Lucerne Sunset

Alternatively, if you’re planning to party after dinner, retreat towards Lake Lucerne right after wrapping up your afternoon plans.

Then head to an Old Town restaurant after the sunset. Here, order a late dinner and experience the Swiss nightlife at its best.

Final words

This Lucerne itinerary has fantastic options for those wondering how to spend a day in Lucerne.  You can customise the itinerary based on your preferences, budget, and, most importantly, your mood.

But, even if it is your last day in Switzerland, the city of Lucerne is a must-visit spot to create cherishable memories.

A Beautiful One Day in Lucerne | Things To Do, Itinerary, & Map

Whether you are visiting Switzerland for a week or a month, odds are you will have the chance to visit the city of Lucerne (also spelled Luzern) for a day at one point or another.

Lucerne is known to be one of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland as it sits on the famous Lake Lucerne and is surrounded by the mountains of the Swiss Alps.

1) How to Get to Lucerne

First things first is getting yourself to Lucerne. Throughout a visit to Switzerland, you will most likely be utilizing the Swiss public transportation network.

Learn More | Switzerland Train Travel

In the Lucerne city center, there is the main train station, which is connected to many cities all around Switzerland. You should have no trouble leveraging the Swiss trains to get yourself right into Lucerne.

Some of the main cities you may be coming from include:

• Zurich : 40 minutes • Bern : 1 hour • Basel : 1 hour • Interlaken : 2 hours • Geneva : 3 hours • Zermatt : 3.5 hours • St Moritz : 4.5 hours

Swiss Travel Pass : Are you planning on traveling frequently throughout Switzerland during your trip? Consider purchasing a Swiss Travel Pass to save some money!

• Switzerland 5 Day Itinerary • Switzerland 7 Day Itinerary • Switzerland 10 Day Itinerary • Switzerland 14 Day Itinerary

2) Is Lucerne a Walkable City

Yes, Lucerne is certainly a walkable city, and one of the best cities in Switzerland to explore by foot.

The great thing about Lucerne, is that once you are in the city center, there is no need to take additional transport to attractions within the city itself.

I would consider everything mentioned on this list of things to do in Lucerne as walkable from one to another.

Do be aware though that there are some more hilly sections of the city, especially if heading up to the city walls.

Now, there are also day trip opportunities to take from Lucerne (i.e. Pilatus). If taking part of a mountain excursion, then yes you would need some additional transport to get you there and back.

Lucerne City Center

3) Best Time to Visit Lucerne

The great thing about Switzerland is that it can be a year-round destination. In the summer months you will find plenty of gorgeous hiking opportunities , while in the winter, skiing and snow sports are popular.

Since Lucerne itself is just a small lakeside town, the weather should not get in the way of visiting any and all of the highlights. Note though that some attractions may not be open in the winter months.

The summer in general is one of the most popular times to visit Switzerland. The summer holiday period and warmer weather, makes it a busy time of year.

While prices will be higher and the streets will be more crowded, you should have the chance to fully enjoy any and all hiking opportunities around the country.

Lucerne can also be added to a winter trip – whether that includes snow sports or not. You will find it to be on the colder side, especially since it sits on a lake.

However, the winter can also bring a new side to the town with snow blanketing the streets, making it a whole different type of experience.

Fall & Spring

The Fall & Spring shoulder seasons are a great time to visit if you want to avoid the crowds and have some cheaper accommodation options.

In general, these shoulder months are great for a Switzerland trip focused on cities, lakes, and lower elevation hikes.

However, since there still will be snow at higher altitudes, you may not have the chance to take part of certain hiking routes. If this is important to you, then you will want to consider a visit closer to the summer time period.

Lake Lucerne Switzerland

4) Where to Stay in Lucerne

If you are just spending one day in Lucerne, I would recommend staying right in the town center. This way you can easily walk around the city from your hotel and take breaks as needed.

Some of the top hotels to choose from in Lucerne include:

Waldstatterhof Swiss Quality Hotel | Located just around the corner from the train station and the Chapel Bridge, Waldstatterhof offers one of the top locations in the Lucerne city center.

Hotel Des Alpes | The hotel is located right along the river, where you can get some beautiful views of the Reuss from the terrace, as you enjoy a meal with a view.

Hotel De la Paix | On the opposite side of the river, you will find Hotel De La Paix. It is right nearby the Lion Monument and other top highlights of Lucerne.

Lion Monument Switzerland

5) One Day in Lucerne Things To Do

With one day in Lucerne, you should have the perfect amount of time to explore the city center. Below are 10 things to do in Lucerne during your time in the city.

Please be sure to check the latest opening hours and prices for a handful of the attractions listed. These do change over time, so please prepare accordingly for your trip.

Lake Lucerne Walk

Since the city center sits right on the riverside & lakeside, what better way to enjoy it than to walk all around the lake area. Within the city you will have the Reuss River that then feeds into Lake Lucerne.

You will find that the town is split into two, with either side on one end of the river. Connecting the two sides are several scenic bridges (more on that next).

As you make your way around throughout your day in Lucerne, be sure to walk those paths closest to the water.

You will get some great views of the city itself, the lake, and even mountains further out in the distance.

Reuss River

Kapellbruke

The Kapellbruke (or Chapel Bridge) is the most famous of bridges that connects the city of Lucerne. It is a beautiful wooden bridge with intricate artwork and stone water tower.

From a historical perspective, the bridge was built in the 1300’s as part of the fortification of the city. Originally, the bridge was even longer in size (285 meters), but it has been shortened over the years.

The stone water tower was used for a variety of reasons over time. This included a dungeon, archive, and treasury vault.

In the 1600s, the bridge was enhanced with intricate paintings on its ceiling. However, in 1993, a fire occurred on the bridge and destroyed many of these. Over the following years, facsimile photographs were added into the missing spots to bring back its original beauty.

While the Kapellbruke may be the most famous bridge in Lucerne, the nearby Spreuer Bridge is worth the walk over as well. It is similar in architecture and also has some artwork throughout to take in.

Spreuer Bridge

Similar to just walking along the lakeside, walking around the Old Town center is going to be another highlight on its own.

Throughout the town you will find colorful buildings, many of which depict detailed artwork. The car free, cobble stone, narrow streets make for the perfect walking town.

Just winding your way through the alleyways and towards the next attraction of the day will be an enjoyable experience to take part of.

You are sure to pass by small shops and restaurants all throughout your journey around the Lucerne Old Town.

Museggmauer City Walls & Towers

If you are looking for some views and some history, you have to head up to the Museggmauer .

The Museggmauer, or Musegg Wall, is the original old city wall that surrounds Lucerne. Throughout this portion of the wall, you will also find 9 towers to explore.

Now, you aren’t able to walk around the entirety of the Museggmauer, but there are certain portions that are open to the public.

You will find the areas around the Schirmerturm, Zytturm, Wachtturm, and Mannliturm towers open to the public. You can also climb to the top of a few of them.

Similarly to the Kapellbruke, the walls and towers were built in the 1300s as a fortification around the city.

In some towers, like the Zytturm, you will find the intricate clockwork behind the clocktower too.

Note that the towers and walkway is only open during the warmer months of the year from April to October.

Lion Monument

The Lion Monument and nearby Glacier Garden (more on that next), is another highlight that can be visited during your one day in Lucerne.

The monument itself is carved into the rock with a small pond at the base of it.

From a historical perspective, the Lion Monument was dedicated in memory of the Swiss mercenaries who served in France under King Louis XVI and were killed during the French Revolution.

The monument was designed by a Danish sculptor named Bertel Thorvaldsen and carved out by Lucas Ahorn. In all, the monument stands at 6 meters tall and 10 meters wide.

Gletschergarten

Right nearby the Lion Monument you will find the Gletschergarten (Glacier Garden). There are several areas to visit within the complex depending on your interests.

These include the National Monument, Glacier Museum, GeoWorld Luzern, Jahrmillionen Show, General Pfyffers 3D Alps, Amreins House, Spiegellabyrinth, Tower Walk, among others.

In general though, the glacier garden takes you back in time to better understand what the area looked like thousands of years ago.

Within the glacier garden area itself you will get to view basins from the last Ice Age, and fossils from over 20 million years ago.

You can feel free to enjoy the rest of the area, which includes a labyrinth of mirrors that is sure to give you a laugh (and maybe some confusion). And don’t forget to head up to the Tower Walk, for a great view of the city from above.

Church of St Leodegar

One of the most famous churches in Lucerne is the Church of St Leodegar. Originally built in the 1630’s, the history of the church goes back to the 700’s!

Prior to the church you see today, there was another church that was built in the 700’s and burnt down in 1633.

Today you will find the Church of St Leodegar in its place, which has been considered one of the most historical instances of Renaissance architecture in the country.

Depending on your preferences, you can either just view the church from the outside or also head into the church itself.

Jesuit Church

Situated right along the riverfront, you will see the beautiful Jesuit Church, another historical part of Lucerne.

Built in 1600’s, it was modeled after the Gesu Church in Rome, and was one of the first structures in Switzerland built in the baroque style.

Again, feel free to just enjoy the view from the waterside, or head into the church too.

Lake Lucerne Boat Trip

At some point during your day, you can take part of a relaxing boat trip along the waters of Lake Lucerne.

The boats leave from the riverside (nearby the Schweizerhof), and make a circular loop further out onto the lake itself.

The boat tour includes an audio guide that can be listened to in multiple languages, and you can decide to enjoy the ride either outside or inside the boat.

With multiple departures a day, the ride lasts just around 60 minutes. It makes for the perfect way to break up your day in Lucerne as you sit back & relax with a view.

6) Lucerne Day Trips

While one day in Lucerne can be filled with a variety of things to do, there are also day trip opportunities. This will be geared towards those that have more than one day to spare while visiting Lucerne.

Mount Pilatus

The most famous of mountain excursions to take part of from Lucerne is to head up to Mount Pilatus. Now, this will entail a whole variety of transportation to get yourself up and down the mountain.

The Golden Round Trip is one of the more popular options to consider when taking part. This would entail:

1) Start off with a quick 15-minute bus ride from Lucerne to Kriens

2) Once at Kriens, you will take a set of two cable cars to the Pilatus summit (the cable car opens around 8:30/9:00AM and I would recommend timing your day to get there around then).

→ Gondola from Kriens to Frankmuntegg . At Frankmuntegg you can explore the area, if you are interested in doing so.

→ From Frankmuntegg, you can hop on the quick Dragon Ride cable car to the summit .

3) Once you reach the summit, you will be welcomed to some of the best panoramic views you could ask for . Feel free to roam around to take in the landscape, head to the mountainside restaurant, and make your way along some trails.

4) You can head down the steepest cogway in the world . This 40-minute ride will be a true highlight on its own as you slowly make your way to the town of Alpnachstad.

5) Once off the cogway, you can take a boat ride on Lake Lucerne from Alpnachstad to Lucerne . The boat trip will give you the chance to enjoy the town and surrounding landscape from the water for around an hour.

Feel free to book this as a guided tour , where all logistics will be taken care of for you in addition to having a guide by your side.

Other day trip mountain excursions to consider around Lucerne include Mt Rigi and Mt Titlus.

Mount Pilatus

Day Trip from Lucerne to Zurich

Instead of taking a mountain excursion, you can also take a day trip to another city. The nearest, most popular city to visit would be Zurich. Since it is just a quick 40 minute train ride away, this will make an easy day trip to take part of altogether.

Similarly to Lucerne, once you are in Zurich, you should be able to visit most of the Old Town area by foot. Below are some top highlights that can be visited during a day trip to the city:

1) Grossmunster Church – not only a beautiful church but also one where you can climb to the top for a small fee (5 CHF). It offers some of the best views of the entire city of Zurich.

2) Fraumünster Church – another iconic church with a large plaza off to the side. There are events happening time to time which really fills up the area nicely.

3) Zurich Opera House – just taking in the beautiful architecture from the outside is an incredible site to see.

4) Bahnhofstrasse – one of the main shopping streets of Zurich.

5) Lindenhof – from the small square you will get some great views of the Limmat River, Zurich architecture, Grossmunster Church, among several other highlights.

6) Limmat to Zurichsee Walk – all along the Limmat river you will find walking paths to take a stroll. One of my favorite things to do in Zurich is to walk along the river towards Zurichsee, while crossing over some bridges along the way.

7) Limmat River Cruise – another way to experience the Limmat is to take a river cruise along its waters. These glass covered boats give visitors the chance to see the city from a whole other perspective.

8) FIFA Museum – during a visit you can learn all about the history of soccer and FIFA, see plenty of unique soccer memorabilia, and enjoy some interactive exhibits.

9) Walk through the Old Town –you can fill the rest of your day with getting lost in the Old Town (Altstadt). There are plenty of streets to check out and explore.

Zurich View City

7) Is 1 Day Enough in Lucerne

If you are just looking to enjoy a lovely day within the Old Town of Lucerne, then one day in the city is enough.

However, the town itself is not the only highlight in the area. There are several nearby mountain excursions to take part of – in particular Mt Pilatus.

While you could technically squeeze everything into one day (Pilatus and Old Town), you will find yourself rushing through it all.

So, if the city itself is all you want to visit, then one day is enough. If you also want to head up Pilatus, I would recommend a second day in the city.

8) 24 Hours in Lucerne Map

To wrap up, below you can find a map that includes the various attractions and activities mentioned.

This will give you a better sense of where everything is located within the city and how to take on one day in Lucerne for yourself.

If you have any questions about spending one day in Lucerne, be sure to add them in below. Also, don’t forget to check out some of the other Switzerland itineraries and guides up on the site.

Have fun out there and safe travels!

Best Time to Visit Lucerne

Lucerne has long been a top destination for tourists year-round, but the best time of year to visit is during spring and fall. Not only are prices for accommodation lower, but the weather is also more pleasant than during the summer months.

Plus, you can enjoy all the great attractions Lucerne has to offer with fewer crowds than usual.

I personally visited Lucerne in early spring and instantly fell in love with it – the small town charm together with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and lake! I especially enjoyed being there without other tourists around.

Where to Stay in Lucerne

Empty cobblestone street lined with historic buildings.

Lucerne is a great destination for travelers, with a variety of neighborhoods to choose from.

Old Town (Alstadt) is perfect for first-time visitors, offering breathtaking views of the city itself. It’s really centrally located with lots of charm. Consider staying at Hotel Des Alpes which is central and near the train station.

New Town (Neustadt) is perfect for visitors who enjoy the nightlife, with plenty of restaurants, bars, and clubs. Stay at the ritzy Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern for a great night’s rest.

For travelers on a budget, Tribschen offers an array of affordable lodging options. Or you can stay at the budget-friendly ibis budget Hotel Luzern City – we always stay at ibis budgets when traveling. They’re unfussy but comfortable.

All three neighborhoods offer great experiences and stunning views that make Lucerne one of Switzerland’s top tourist destinations.

Getting Around Lucerne

A wooden bridge stretches over the water.

Lucerne is an incredibly walkable city, so if you’re staying centrally, the best way to get around is by foot. The city’s well-maintained cobbled streets and scenic lake views make navigating by foot a pleasure.

But if you find yourself going further than you’d like to walk, there are local buses and trains that will take you almost anywhere in the area.

To save money on transport costs, get a Visitor Lucerne Card , which will allow for unlimited use of public transport within the city limits.

Blue river drips over into a mini waterfall.

One day in Lucerne is enough to explore some of the most iconic sights in the city, including the historic Chapel Bridge, Old Town, and Lake Lucerne.

The best way to get around Lucerne is by foot since it is quite compact. Most attractions within the city center are just a few minutes away from each other by walking. Public transportation is also available if needed.

The amount of money you need for a day in Lucerne will depend on your activities and budget. If you are looking to travel on a budget, there are plenty of options available, such as inexpensive restaurants and attractions. You can also find lodging, transportation, and activities that allow you to stick to your budget. However, if you’re looking for a more luxury experience in Lucerne, the costs may increase accordingly. Hotels range from mid-range to five-star accommodations, with prices increasing with the level of luxury. Some activities such as boat rides or excursions may require additional fees depending on the tour company you choose.

Lucerne is well known for its picturesque scenery and outdoor activities. You can explore the city’s beautiful Old Town, which features cobblestone streets and historic buildings such as the Chapel Bridge and Jesuit Church. Outdoor adventures like hiking, skiing, kayaking, and zip-lining are all available in the area around Lucerne. One Day in Lucerne, Switzerland – 10 Amazing Things to Do

Last Modified: July 28, 2023 //  by  Anda

Welcome to Lucerne, the first stop of our 10 day Switzerland itinerary . You can call it ‘ Luzern ‘ if you are a Germanophile. Or you can call it ‘ Lucerne ‘ if you are a Francophile. But no matter what you call it, this idyllic Swiss city will take you by surprise: it’s calm, clean and civilized. Lucerne is also easy to explore, which was great since we only had one day there.

Table of Contents

First Impressions

• walk along the river bank,  • cross the chapel bridge (kapellbrücke), • explore the the old town area and the city walls, • visit the farmers’ market on the reuss river bank, • visit the lion of lucerne monument, • go shopping in the old town, • take a boat trip on lake lucerne, • ride the gondola up to mount pilatus, • try some authentic fondue, • look for a local event in town, best time to visit lucerne, where to stay in lucerne.

Lucerne is one of the oldest cities in Switzerland and is located in the German-speaking part of the country. The city has a unique and idilic setting: on the bank of Lake Lucerne with a backdrop of the Swiss Alps.

One day in Lucerne itinerary

Lucerne is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and for a good reason. Everything is so colorful and picturesque, almost too perfect to be true! When I first saw it I was filled we regret that we only booked a day in Lucerne, but luckily we were able to see quite a lot during this short time.

10 Best Things to Do in Lucerne in One Day

Ok, Lucerne is an amazing city, but is it possible to visit it in just one day? Absolutely! Just follow this one day itinerary and find out how to discover Lucerne’s most important attractions.

One of the first things people do when they arrive in Lucerne is walk along the banks of the Reuss River. This is the most scenic part of town, where you take lots of pictures of the colorful buildings that line the shores and feed the swans.

Swans on the Reuss River

There are swans everywhere in Lucerne, but especially around the lake and the river. These are giant swans, unlike any other I’ve seen so far. The swans are constantly fed by the visitors and locals, so when they see you approaching the water, they quickly swim to the shore expecting to be fed.

Swans on the Reuss River in Lucerne

The Chapel Bridge links the Lucerne Theatre on the south bank of the River Reuss with St. Peter’s Chapel on Rathausquai, passing the Water Tower on the way.

The 669 feet long wood-covered structure which dates back to the 12th century, is Lucerne’s most famous bridge and the oldest of its kind in Europe.

One day in Lucerne itinerary - crossing the Chapel Bridge

Just as significant as the bridge itself is the fascinating cycle of paintings which adorn it, adding to its character.

Paintings adorning Chapel Bridge in Lucerne

Lucerne’s medieval old town is a charming and romantic place. It looks like it was taken right out of a movie scene: with picturesque squares, water fountains, covered bridges, and old buildings with colorful façades.

Wandering through Old Town Lucerne

You just can’t get bored strolling through the narrow, cobblestone streets lined with antique stores, art galleries and small restaurants.

lucerne day trip itinerary

The Old Town is also very close to the medieval city walls and towers, so don’t miss them. You can actually walk the walls in between the towers. A climb to the top of any of the towers gives you a wonderful view of the city of Lucerne. Don’t miss the clock tower especially!

On Tuesdays and Saturday mornings there is a farmers’ market along the Reuss river bank. There is nothing like strolling through a Swedish farmers’ market on a sunny day! The opulence of produce and delicacies displayed there is amazing.

Delicacies at Lucerne Farmers' Market

From homemade Swiss cheeses, fresh meets, sausages, wines, fresh vegetables, fruits, homemade-sweets, flowers they had almost everything you can imagine.

Farmers' Market in Lucerne

The smell of freshly baked goods, flowers and herbs was filling the air. It’s a pure delight to taste some of these goodies, even though they are unbelievable pricey! We I paid about $9 (8 CHF) for a piece of homemade pie!

To my surprise, I saw merchants from many other European countries coming to sell their produce here. There were Italians selling pasta, French selling baby potatoes, Germans selling their famous sausages.

There are many things to do in Lucerne in one day, but if I were to recommend only one it would be visiting the Lion of Lucerne Monument. It is the one attraction most likely to capture your heart.

Set in a park near the city center, this 20-ft lion sculpture carved in a cliff is a monument dedicated to the Swiss mercenary soldiers who died during the French Revolution.

The Lion of Lucerne monument

The dying lion is portrayed pierced by a spear. His head is bowed and his paw is covering a shield bearing the fleur-de-lis (the symbol of the French monarchy); beside him there is another shield bearing the coat of arms of Switzerland.

the Lion of Lucerne monument

There is so much sadness in the lion’s expression that it makes your heart break. It’s rare that I get this feeling in front of a sculpture! The monument is sheltered from the hustle and bustle of the street by a green alcove of tall trees. The vertical rock where the sculpture lies has a pond at the base and is surrounded green grass.

When you think of Switzerland, you will invariably think of watches, army knives, and of course, chocolates. We couldn’t leave Lucerne without buying all these. But there is so much more to buy in this beautiful town than just watches and chocolate. If you want to buy some authentic souvenirs from Switzerland, Lucerne Old Town is the best place to go.

Shopping in Old Town Lucerne

The Old Town area is full of souvenir shops and other stores, but if you have time to venture beyond this tourist area, you can find some really nice things to by.

Shopping is one of the best things to do in Lucerne

Even if you only have a day in Lucerne, I would still advice you to go shopping for some souvenirs. There is a wide variety of stores that I did not find in any of the other small towns we visited later on this trip. I wish we had more time for shopping in Lucerne.

If the weather is beautiful, don’t miss taking a boat trip on Lake Lucerne on one of the paddle steamers. You’ll be fascinated by the scenery, the and the historical places dotted along the shoreline.

Your Swiss Pass is valid on the entire lake for all regularly scheduled cruises. Or you can just walk up to the ticket counter and buy a single ticket (First Class: CHF 57.50; Second Class: CHF 38.50).

Taking a boat trip on Lake Lucerne

The most popular attraction in Lucerne is a gondola ride up to Mount Pilatus. Visiting Lucerne’s landmark mountain is worth if you only have one day in the city.

Riding the Gondola and the Aerial Cablecar to Mt. Pilatus

The gondola ride that takes about 30 minutes will take you over a pre-Alpine landscape to reach Fräkmüntegg. From there, you’ll transfer to the aerial cableway known as the ‘Dragon Ride.’ After another 5 minutes you’ll arrive at 7,000 feet above sea level. The panoramic views over the lake and Alps from up here are absolutely stunning!

One of the best things to do in Lucerne is eat some of Fondue, a Swiss melted cheese dish served in a pot over a spirit lamp and eaten by dipping bread into it.

Eating Fondue in Lucerne

If you are a cheese lover, Lucerne is your place. The fondue I tried here was without question the best I’ve ever had anywhere else.

It was the 700th anniversary of the Firefighters’ Brigade in Lucerne when we arrived. The brigade had some spectacular rescue and firefighting demonstrations prepared to keep the young and old entertained.

Best things to do in Lucerne: watch a local event

There were fire trucks everywhere in town, from old-fashioned pulled by horses ones  to very modern ones. Kids and adults were equally having fun.

Lucerne is pretty much a year round destination, so deciding when to visit depends a lot on your interests. Winters are cold, but also a paradise for those interested in winter sports.

Summer brings more stable weather, longer days and sunny skies, so you can spend a lot of time outside. As a result, Switzerland sees a lot of tourists at this time of year, which also drives up hotel prices.

We visited Lucerne in May, witch is actually the shoulder season in Europe . The weather was perfectly sunny, not only in Lucerne but also in Interlaken , and even in Zermatt . However, that was simply lucky because usually in spring and fall Switzerland gets a lot of rainfall.

Lucerne is compact and easy to navigate city. Everything is within walking distance, which is ideal for visitors. However, if you only have one day in Lucerne, my advice is to stay in the city center. The area is extremely clean, like everywhere else in Switzerland. Accommodations in this area are less expensive than in the Old Town.

We arrived in Lucern by train from Zurich and descended right in the middle of the city center. Coming out of the train station, we emerged right away onto the main street, just a couple of streets away from the waterfront.

We stayed into Cascada Boutique Hotel which was within walking distance from the train station and also very close to the Chapel Bridge. There are however numerous other properties to choose from , depending on your budget.

June 4, 2015 at 9:15 am

Great post! I didn’t know Lucerne had so much to offer. I’ve in general just skipped over Switzerland as a place to visit because of cost reasons, but you’ve just given me a big reason to visit. The town looks so quaint and I love all the colours and paintings on the facades of buildings!

June 4, 2015 at 12:29 pm

Switzerland may be a little more expensive than other European countries, but it definitely has an unspoiled beauty that is worth every penny.

June 2, 2015 at 11:26 am

You managed to cover quite a bit in just a day. I passed through about a decade ago, also for just a day, and remember spending quite a bit of time at a weekend market place. Sampling cheeses, of course. Thanks for reigniting that memory.

June 2, 2015 at 7:41 am

This really looks like an amazing spot- especially because of that fondue! 🙂 I’ve steered clear of Switzerland mostly because of the costs. Someday!

June 2, 2015 at 1:47 pm

You have point here, Andrea. Switzerland is indeed expensive.

Anda you look like you had a great time in Lucerne. We will be there in December and I’m sure like yourself we will not be able to get enough of it. You sure looked like you enjoyed that pie.

June 1, 2015 at 4:45 pm

December may be even more beautiful in December and the open market will still be there on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

May 31, 2015 at 12:13 pm

I’ve always been struck by how beautiful Lucerne is – one of my friends from college lived there for a while and her photos were jealousy-inducing!

Lucerne holds a special place in my heart as it’s where I got engaged! Didn’t get any photos of that as it was before the blog but I did get some shots of the Lion monument and the bridge. Did you go up the little funicular railway – supposedly the shortest in the world? That’s where we got engaged.

You had me at fondue! This looks like such a charming place to visit, and that lion is incredible!

I love fondue too, Melinda.

It looks so beautiful Anda – just the kind of scenery I really love. And I’m also very tempted by the fondue!

May 28, 2015 at 3:07 am

So gorgeous! I’ve always wanted to visit Switzerland but haven’t made it there yet. Was it expensive?

Btw, what lens is the one in the photo? 😀

May 28, 2015 at 9:41 am

Sort of expensive, Vlad. The Swiss Frank is higher than the US Dollar and the prices are a little higher than in other European countries too. It’s not unaffordable so I think you can visit it.

May 27, 2015 at 3:55 pm

Visited here in the 1980’s and again in 2005, still one of my favorite small cities in Europe. oh and that fondue, I so agree. Wish I could remember the name of the lovely restaurant upstairs on the far side of the Kapelle Bruecke. Maybe where you enjoyed yours?

May 28, 2015 at 9:43 am

No, Karen, I tried mine in a little piazza, but it was delightful!

May 27, 2015 at 9:34 am

Perfect timing, I will be passing through here in a few weeks. Lovely post, I can’t wait to get there now!

May 27, 2015 at 9:41 am

Happy travels, Alyssa.Hope you’ll like Luzern.

Fortress Furigen

Fortress Furigen, Lucerne Itinerary and Things To Do

This fortress provides a unique experience. It was built during WW2 when Hitler was taking over Europe. Switzerland built an extensive system of hidden bunkers and secret fortresses throughout the country during this time. Most have since been retired, but this one lives on as a museum. You can practice aiming the weapons, see where the soldiers lived, and journey deep into the mountain to experience what it was like to be stationed here. Pro-tip: it is around 50ºF (10ºC) in the fortress year-round, so dress warmly.

Cost and Hours : CHF 7 per adult. Open 11:00am-5:00pm Saturday and Sunday only.

Address : Kehrsitenstrasse, 6362 Stansstad, Switzerland

Website : www.nidwaldner-museum.ch

Getting there : This can be a bit tricky. First, take the 15-minute train from Lucerne to Stansstad. From the Stansstad train station, follow the brown signs to Festungsmuseum. It’s a 20-minute walk from the train station through the peaceful resort town of Stansstad to get to the fortress. We highly recommend using google maps to get you there, as the brown signs aren’t always there when you need them. The entrance is on the lakeside road in what looks like a small shed. A map of the route from the Standsstad train station to the fortress is included below.

Lake Lucerne Boat Trip

Lake Lucerne Boat Trip, Lucerne Itinerary and Things To Do

One of the best ways to see the lake is by boat. The easiest way to do this is on a one-hour round trip cruise on the panoramic yacht Saphir. This will take you around the bay of Luzern in a luxury boat with exceptional views, and comes with an informative audio guide.

Pro-tip : If you got to Lucerne via boat (e.g. on the Gotthard Panorama Express), you should skip this activity, as you won’t see anything you haven’t already seen.

Cost and Hours : CHF 27 per adult (discount with Eurail and other transit passes). Departures from Pier 7 every afternoon at 12:45, 2:00, 3:15, and 4:30.

Lucerne City Walk (Including Chapel Bridge And Lion Monument)

The most important thing to do in nearly every city you visit is walk around and get to know your destination. Lucerne is easy to explore by yourself. Simply wander through town, making sure to center your roaming around the wooden Chapel Bridge. Also make sure to stop by the famous lion monument. When you’re done exploring, stop for an aperitif with a bridge view. The rest of the evening is yours.

If you prefer a guided experience, the Tourist Information office offers a 2 hour guided walk of Lucerne at 10:15am every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday for CHF 20 per adult.

Chapel Bridge Address : Kapellbrücke, 6002 Luzern, Switzerland

Lion Monument Address : Denkmalstrasse 4, 6002 Luzern, Switzerland

Swiss Transport Museum

Swiss Transport Museum, Lucerne Itinerary and Things To Do

This museum covers almost every mode of transportation and has hours worth of kid-friendly exhibits. It covers not only regular transportation, but fun subjects like space travel and auto racing. You can easily spend a full day at this huge museum and still not have seen it all.

Cost and Hours : CHF 32 per adult. Open daily 10:00am-5:00pm (6:00pm in summer).

Address : Lidostrasse 5, 6006 Luzern, Switzerland

Website : www.verkehrshaus.ch/en/

Lido Wiese Park

Lido Wiese Park, Lucerne Itinerary and Things To Do

This is a public beach / park right outside the transportation museum. Walk all around this park watching as locals soak up the sun the Swiss way. Have a seat on a bench and rest your feet after all that time at the museum. (You can skip this if you don’t go to the museum).

Address : Lido, 6006 Luzern, Switzerland

Getting Around Lucerne

You do not need a car in Lucerne. Most things are reachable by foot. Anything else can easily be reached via clean, safe, and efficient buses. Hotels and most Airbnbs will provide a Lucerne visitor card which allows you to use the buses for free. Check with your hotel or Airbnb host for more details.

One Day in Lucerne Itinerary – Top Things to Do in Lucerne, Switzerland

Surrounded by towering snow-capped mountains and lush green valleys, Lucerne looks like an old postcard brought to life. Like a snapshot of an idealized European town from Hayao Miyazaki’s imaginarium, Lucerne is filled with preserved medieval towers, small balconies under charming rooftops, old wooden bridges, and gorgeous terraces and walkaways lining Lake Lucerne, with elegant swans and cute ducks gliding across the tranquil waters. According to a popular legend, the name “Lucerne” originates from the Latin word “lucerna”, meaning “lamp”. As the story goes, an angel with a beam of light flowing from his fingertips illuminated a spot, signaling to a group of eighth-century Benedictine monks where to build the city’s first chapel. The city that developed around the chapel is now known as Lucerne or “Leuchtenstadt” in German, meaning, “The City of Light”. Throughout its history, Lucerne was a popular destination for European aristocracy and elite, inspiring the likes of Wagner, Goethe, and Queen Victoria in the 19th century. Today, the city still enchants with its historic sights and magnificent landscapes, although there are a couple of surprises thrown into the mix, with modern museums and festivals, a couple of futuristic, high-tech landmarks, and exquisite boutique shops only adding to the city’s already legendary allure and charm.

WHAT’S THE BEST TIME TO VISIT LUCERNE?

With plenty of things to do in Lucerne year-round, the city is not really a typical tourist destination in the sense that it depends on just one or two seasons. Every time of year has something to offer . While it’s never particularly hot in Lucerne (the Alps are very close), the summers are pleasant and balmy, with the comfortable temperatures continuing into the autumn months. The majority of visitors come to Lucerne between June and September. The temperatures hover between 12°C and 24°C even in July and August, making this the best time to visit Lucerne if you are interested in hiking and exploring the outdoors.

If you want to save a bit on accommodation , skip July and August, two of the busiest and most expensive months to visit Lucerne. October is the perfect middle ground for great travel deals. The skiing season starts already in November and lasts until mid-April. The weather is very cold even in springtime (March-May), although there are numerous exciting things to do in Lucerne during the carnival festival in February/March.

Lucerne

A FEW FACTS ABOUT LUCERNE

In spite of the popular legend linking Lucerne and the Latin word “lucerna”, many historians believe that the city derives its name from “Luciaria”, meaning weir-basket. This theory implies that Lucerne was initially a small fishing village , with later generations trying to distance themselves from the city’s humble origins.

The oldest monastery in Lucerne was built in 750 not far from the original village of Lucerne and consecrated to St. Leodegar. The city’s religious history is an exciting historical topic. During the Protestant Reformation, Lucerne was the only major city in Switzerland to side with the pope and stay on the side of the Roman Catholic Church , even during the four civil wars caused by the dispute between 1529 and 1712.

In addition to chapels and monasteries, Lucerne is also famous for its many bridges. One of the notable bridges in the city is the Chapel Bridge , the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe . The official language in Lucerne is German, although you may have a hard time understanding the locals even if you are fluent in Standard German. The Swiss variety of Standard German and especially Alemannic Swiss German (which is mainly spoken in Lucerne) are a very special dialect that takes time getting used to.

ONE DAY IN LUCERNE ITINERARY

Follow this guide and make the most of your trip even if you’re short on time. These are the top sights and things to do on your one day in Lucerne.

GO ON A TOUR: Take a walking tour to discover the “City of Lights” or if you prefer cruising, definitely consider Cruise on panoramic yacht .

Start Your Day on the Shores of Lake Lucerne

You will notice that a lot of Lucerne’s museums and galleries don’t open before 10 AM . That means that you will only have enough time to squeeze in two or maybe three (depending on your preferences) between 10 and 5. Luckily, there are many other things to do in Lucerne apart from hopping from one museum to the next. In fact, you should try to spend as much time as possible outdoors, enjoying the city’s beautiful architecture and breathtaking scenery.

Early in the morning, nothing beats the sight of Lake Lucerne , especially the area between the Lucerne Culture and Congress Centre and the sailing club (Segelclub Tribschenhorn). Park Ufschötti is a popular green space on the waterfront with a nice beach and great views of the old buildings and church towers across the water. Go for a long stroll along the shore, take your time and enjoy the gorgeous scenic views of the fourth largest lake in Switzerland.

Lake Lucerne

Board an Old Steamer and Take a Boat Tour

Less than 500 meters from the University of Lucerne, right next to the beautiful Inseli Park , you will notice a couple of larger ships, including several beautiful old steamboats , elongated, yet with a broad center, with ornately decorated prows and a single large black chimney in the middle. The steamboats belong to the Navigation Company of Lake Lucerne (SGV) AG (Schifffahrtsgesellschaft des Vierwaldstättersees (SGV) AG in German).

They are historic paddleboat steamers that take visitors on sightseeing boat trips on the lake and also connect Lucerne with the small towns and villages on the other side of the shore. The trips are available year-round and start as early as 6:15 AM. If you can, treat yourself to a nice hourlong cruise aboard one of the old steamers and revel in the gorgeous exterior and interior of these pieces of history, with stunning carved wooden details, gorgeously decorated salons, and the kind of classic, timeless beauty that is only surpassed by the pristine landscape along the lake shore.

Old Steamer

Choose a Museum to Visit – Option One: Wagner

Once you’re back on solid ground, it will likely be around 10 AM, meaning you should be able to visit one of Lucerne’s many museums. There are several museums close to the docks, including Kunstmuseum Luzern, Richard Wagner Museum Lucerne, and Sammlung Rosengart. You will probably only have time for one of the three, however, so pick the museum that sounds the most interesting to you.

If you love opera, especially Richard Wagner, then you absolutely must see the Richard Wagner Museum Lucerne (opened from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. from Tuesday to Sunday), housed inside a 15th-century country villa that was once the famous composer’s home. Students of music and passionate fans of classical music typically spend around 2 hours at the museum exploring the place and studying the sheet music and letters.

For the average person, one hour should be enough to tour the three buildings that make up the museum and to get a good understanding of the life and works of Richard Wagner. His letters, clothing books, paintings, musical instruments, and other artifacts are all there on display and represent a compelling slice of history even if you are not familiar with Wagner’s life.

Choose a Museum to Visit – Option Two: Sammlung Rosengart Museum

Of course, there’s a chance that you can make it and visit both of these museums, but if you like art more than classical music, skip Wagner and head straight to Sammlung Rosengart Museum , located at 10 Pilatusstrasse. The museum houses a large collection of priceless 19 th and 20 th century art, with a particular focus on Pablo Picasso .

You can tour the museum on your own or sign up for a guided tour and learn everything about the period between Impressionism and Classic Modernism, when Picasso, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse, Fernand Leger, George Braque, Joan Miró, and Marc Chagall marked an entire epoch and irrevocably changed the world of art. With seminal paintings by these artists, in addition to Monet, Kandinsky, Cezanne, Modigliani, and many others, Sammlung Rosengart Museum houses one of the most incredible and eclectic collections of art in Switzerland.

Walk to Chapel Bridge

Once you’re done touring the museums, take a short walk to Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), one of the most fascinating places to visit in Lucerne. It takes about 30 minutes to get there from the Richard Wagner Museum Lucerne along the shore. From Sammlung Rosengart Museum, it takes three minutes or less since it’s only 200 m from the museum down Theaterstrasse.

A recognizable landmark of Lucerne, Chapel Bridge is a covered wooden pedestrian bridge across the Reuss River, connecting the Old Town north of the river with the new town to the south. The oldest truss bridge in the world and the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe, Chapel Bridge is an important historical landmark, constructed in 1333 as part of the city’s fortifications. The bridge is also notable for the paintings that were added in the 17 th century , mostly depicting important events and scenes from Swiss history.

Chapel Bridge

Cross the Bridge and Explore the Old Town

Take your time crossing the diagonal Chapel Bridge and feel free to stop and enjoy the view or take a closer look at the paintings. Once you’re on the other side, you’ll find yourself in Lucerne’s Altstadt , one of the most beautiful Old Towns in all of Europe. Explore the quaint pedestrian-only streets lined with historic half-timber houses and old ornate façades. For the best possible experience, walk to St. Peter’s Chapel (Peterskapelle) as soon as you cross the bridge. St. Peter’s Chapel is where Chapel Bridge got its name from.

Walk west on Kapellgasse behind the chapel, a vibrant street lined with charming shops, cafés, and restaurants. After a few minutes, you will reach Kornmarkt Square with the painted Pfistern guildhall, the Lucerne Town Hall, and the gorgeous old clock tower. Weinmarkt is another Old Town square, just 100 meters west of Kornmarkt. It is a beautiful square with colorful paintings adorning the surrounding buildings, notable for being the square where the Canton of Lucerne swore a federal oath in 1332 and united with the cantons Schwyz, Uri and Unterwalden.

Old Town, Lucerne

Pick a Nice Spot for Lunch

Apart from sightseeing, you can peruse some of the nearby shops (including exclusive watch stores, jewelry shops, cosmetics stores, and so on), or you can pick a nice spot and enjoy a good hearty meal to regain your energy. The Old Town has some great restaurants to offer, such as Brasserie Bodu , a charming French brasserie with a beautiful little terrace by the river. The place serves primarily French classics such as magret de canard (duck), a number of seafood options (excellent seabass with vegetables), delicious bouillabaisse (a fish stew), and tasty sirloin steaks. The desserts are just as mouthwatering as the main dishes. The Crème brûlée and mousse au chocolate are to die for.

For something a bit more laid back, consider Soul Chicken , a cozy little spot that serves all kinds of chicken dishes in a unique setting that feels remarkably homey. It is great place for a quick bite, although you may want to spend some time there to enjoy the warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Hurry up and Visit the Swiss Museum of Transport

The Swiss Museum of Transport is the next attraction, an extremely popular place with more than 5,000 reviews on Google Maps. The Museum, called Verkehrshaus der Schweiz (“Transportation House of Switzerland”) opened in 1959 and has since become the most popular museum in the country. Since the museum closes at 5 PM , and there are other things to do in Lucerne after that time, you should hurry and visit the museum as soon as you finish lunch.

The museum is located 2.5 km east of Kornmarkt Square along the shore of Lake Lucerne. You can get there on foot in 30 minutes or you can grab a cab and be there in 7. You can also hop aboard bus line 8 or 24 from Schwanenplatz to Verkehrshaus/Lido (5 stops total). The bus takes under 10 minutes. The museum exhibits every form of transport and also includes a planetarium , an extensive collection of works by Hans Enri, and a massive 1:20,000 scale aerial photograph of Switzerland.

The museum’s Filmtheatre is the largest cinema in Switzerland, and its interactive attractions include a large construction area where children can play with excavators, dumpers, a small steam train, and other exhibits.

Swiss Museum of Transport

Check out Hofkirche St. Leodegar

Hofkirche St. Leodegar is a historical church in Lucerne whose two slim Gothic towers can be seen from basically anywhere in the city, especially from the lake shore. If you took the bus to get to the Swiss Museum of Transport, you can take the same route back, only this time get off at Luzernerhof Station near the big intersection.

Hofkirche St. Leodegar is right around the corner, surrounded by gorgeous old buildings and wooden houses. It is the most important church in Lucerne, occupying the same spot where the 8 th century abbey was originally built . The original Gothic-style church stood there until 1633, when it was destroyed in a fire that left only the towers intact. The new church was constructed in 1645, incorporating the old towers. The interior of the church is truly remarkable, with gilded statues, ornate alters, and white stone lining the walls. Hofkirche St. Leodegar is a gorgeous example of the German Renaissance style.

Hofkirche St. Leodegar

Take a Short Walk to Löwendenkmal (Dying Lion Monument)

Approximately 500 meters north of the church, there is a small park with tall trees and a cliff hanging over a miniature pond. There are three museums surrounding the park: Alpineum Museum (with paintings and miniatures of the Alps), Spiegelmuseum Luzern (the Museum of Mirrors), and Gletschergarten Luzern (history museum focusing on the Ice Age and glaciers).

The Dying Lion of Lucerne is the oldest figurative monument in Switzerland and a beloved landmark among locals and visitors alike. It was designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen and carved by Lukas Ahorn in 1821 to commemorate the regiment of the Swiss Guard that was massacred by French revolutionaries in 1792 while defending King Louis XVI. A total of 760 soldiers died. The inscription under the sculpture reads “To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss.”

Dying Lion

Visit the Ancient City Walls and Towers

The old medieval ramparts of Lucerne are among the few surviving ancient city walls of its type still standing in Switzerland. A large section of the wall is perfectly preserved, as well as 9 towers that are open to the public between Easter and October 31. The walls are among the best places for a walk in Lucerne. The climb there can be challenging, but you are awarded with amazing sweeping views of the city, extending far into the distance in all directions over the rooftops.

Museggmauer, as the ramparts are called, closes around 7 PM, which means you should just about make it if you head straight there after the Dying Lion Monument. West to east, Dächliturm is the first tower, only 500 meters from the monument. Of the nine watchtowers along the 870-metre wall, four can be accessed: Heuturm (Watch Tower), Schirmerturm, Zytturm (Time Tower), and Mannliturm.

Museggmauer

Treat Yourself to a Real Swiss Dinner

There are several great restaurants with authentic Swiss cuisine under the ramparts. Visiting one of these places is high on the list of things to do in Lucerne if you are looking for a complete experience. However, choosing the right place depends on a number of factors, for example, whether you prefer something large and boisterous or small and private. Reussbad, located in a solitary building right next to the Nölliturm watchtower, perfectly fits the latter description. The understated, tasteful and comfortable interior provides the setting for quality French-inspired dishes complimented by an impressive selection of great to exceptional wines. The restaurant is very popular among the locals and the few tourists who know how to recognize a good dining experience.

Your other option is Stadtkeller , located in the Old Town, slightly to the north of the Chapel Bridge. This restaurant is a must if you like amazing shows, partying, and delicious food. The restaurant’s entertaining show is a major draw – with a band performing on stage, yodeling and playing different Swiss instruments such as alpine horns and cow bells. After a few drinks, you may find yourself joining the band and the other guests, singing, dancing, and having fun.

If you want to keep partying, check out ROK Klub across the river, with a great mood and good music.

DAY TRIPS FROM LUCERNE

While certainly beautiful, Lucerne is not a particularly large city. If you keep that in mind, you will never hit a wall and ask yourself what to do in Lucerne.

You can always opt for one of the many exciting day trips from Lucerne, such as the magical Lucerne Chocolate Making and Tasting in a Family Owned Factory or the private Lucerne Day Trip to nearby castles and villages , where you can step into a magical fairy-tale world of castles, palaces, and ancient monasteries nestled between towering black cliffs or sitting atop high forested ridges. For the adventurous types, you can always go hiking in the Grindelwald – Jungfrau – Eiger Region , the very heart of the Swiss Alps. If you would like to know more about these opportunities, check out this overview of the best Lucerne day trips.

EXTRA TIPS FOR VISITING LUCERNE

-Lucerne, just like Switzerland in general, is very safe and welcoming. You should still keep an eye on your valuables just in case, but no need to be paranoid.

-Switzerland is among the most expensive countries in Europe. That said, when eating out, service is usually included, so you are not expected to tip. You can add 5-10% if your water or waitress was particularly outstanding.

-Switzerland is a country where people love to do things by the rules. Certain behaviors are frowned upon at best – jaywalking would be a good example, not to mention littering.

-Euros are not accepted, so make sure to get Swiss francs.

TRAVEL TIPS FOR ONE DAY IN LUCERNE

Before talking about your 1-day Lucerne itinerary, here are some tips for your short Lucerne trip.

HOW TO GET AROUND LUCERNE

There are a couple of ways to get around in Lucerne.

WALKING: One of the best ways to get around Lucerne is on foot . The city is known for its beautiful architecture, stunning Lake Lucerne, and picturesque bridges, so the best way to experience it all is by walking. However, there are a few sights you cannot walk to.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: If you are in Lucerne for one day, I suggest using public transport (instead of a car) to the places that cannot be walked to quickly. Lucerne has an efficient public transportation system that includes buses and trains, making it easy to get around the city and the surrounding areas.

If you stay in an official accommodation in Lucerne, you will get a Visitor Card and can use public transportation without any extra costs .  It is valid for the town center but it does not get you all the way to Mount Rigi station. However, it comes in pretty handy .

The Swiss Travel Pass covers the bus and train rides as well.

BOAT: Boat tours are a popular way to explore Lucerne and its stunning Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee in German). You can choose from a variety of boat tour options like public cruises, private charters, and even paddle boat rides for a more intimate experience. I highly recommend using the boat at least to get to Vitznau (and from there take the funicular to get up Mount Rigi).

The regular boat cruises are also included in the Swiss Travel Pass .

CAR: I normally love road-tripping in Switzerland, but I should add that parking in cities and Lucerne is difficult and extremely expensive.  There might be free parking premises in some hotels, but I recommend getting there by public transportation .

Swiss Travel Pass

A Swiss Travel Pass might be perfect for you, especially if you travel in Switzerland by train . The initial price is quite high, but you can use buses and trains without any costs and can do unlimited boat cruises on Lake Lucerne. You get to use the cogwheel train to go up to Mount Rigi for free with the Swiss Travel Pass in 2024 and you also get free entry to many museums in Lucerne.

You get a 50 % discount on cable car excursions to Mount Pilatus and Mount Titlis.

WHAT TO DO IN LUCERNE IN 1 DAY

Without further ado, here is how I would spend my one day in Lucerne . Whether you stay overnight in Lucerne or not, the first Lucerne attraction should be this iconic chapel – the Chapel Bridge.

Kapellbrücke – Chapel Bridge

The   Chapel Bridge   is THE most famous tourist sight in Lucerne . With its convenient location, just a   stone‘s throw from the main train station, it is also within easy reach .

Chapel Bridge 2016 in Lucerne - Can you spot me and Puppygak on th bridge?

This covered wooden footbridge spans the Reuss River diagonally in the city of Lucerne and was originally   constructed in the 14 th century . It   burnt partly down in 1993 and was rebuilt, and today, it is – again – a magnet for tourists together with its water tower   If you are on the bridge, you can see the Vierwaldstättersee ( Lake Lucerne in English ) , and the Reuss River, and you also have a fantastic panorama of the Swiss Alps .

Lucerne with the Chapel Bridge, Jesuit Church and Mount Pilatus

Here, you´ll also find an exciting series of paintings that date back to the 16 th century . On the bridge, you can see the many restaurants lined up – those restaurants and bars are also excellent places to have coffee or lunch / dinner . You have not really seen Lucerne if you have not seen the bridge.

  • There is no entrance fee
  • Takes about 10-60 minutes

Jesuit Church

The   Jesuit Church is located near the Chapel Bridge. Actually, you can see it already if you stand on the bridge.   It is a   Catholic church built in the 17 th century , and the outside appearance does not give any clue about its inner beauty – so it will most likely surprise you.

Jesuit Church in Lucerne in winter

Despite its stunning looks, it did not take me long to go through it, so it is probably easy to squeeze it into your Lucerne itinerary – so make it a stop and do not skip it ( even if you are not religious / Catholic ).

  • Open every day from 6:30 a . m . to 6:30 p . m . On Mondays and Thursdays, it opens at 9:30 a . m . Before you enter, check when it is closed for religious worship . Their website is in German, thus I have not linked it for you .
  • Free to visit
  • Dress modestly

Lion Monument

Then it is time to explore the beautiful old town of Lucerne . Before admiring the pretty buildings there, we start with one of the main sights located there –   the Lion Monument.

Dying Lion Monument- One of the tops things to do in Lucerne

The Lion Monument   commemorates Swiss soldiers who died in the 18 th century during the French Revolution . It is a unique landmark in Switzerland and a must-see in one day in Lucerne.

It does not take long to see, but you might be interested in the history and a   guided walking tour might help you learn more about it . Check out the best prices for guided tours in Lucerne.

  • No entrance fee

Glacier Gardens

Next to the Lion Monument is the Glacier Garden, a wonderland that holds secrets dating back 20,000 years to the last Ice Age ! The Glacier Garden offers a unique opportunity to peer into Earth’s past. As you delve into this subterranean world, you embark on a fascinating journey through time, uncovering secrets about geology and history.

Glacier Garden in Lucerne, outdoor museum

Take a journey through time and witness the incredible transformations of Lucerne’s landscape!

Additionally, the garden features a museum and a fun mirror maze (not only fun for kids, but they will probably love this part the most of the Lucerne itinerary).

TRAVEL TIPS FOR THE GLACIER GARDEN

  • Located in the Old Town of Lucerne, just next to the Lion Monument
  • Free with a Swiss Travel Pass
  • 22 CHF for adults (if you are on a budget, you can skip it as it is rather expensive without the Swiss Travel Pass).

Lucerne Old Town

The Lion Monument is located in the old town and here you will find more attractions, so it is time to explore the rest of the gorgeous old town , which is full of charming architecture .

Old town in Lucerne in winter

If you do a   self – guided walking tour, you should also visit the   Town Hall, and along the way, you´ll pass some pretty buildings with   exciting facades  ( and I mean seriously pretty buildings ) like the   Hotel des Balances  ( picture “ Hotel Waage ” above ) .

Also, watch out for the   fountains  – the water is drinkable and some of the fountains are quite unique ! My tip is to keep your eyes open and watch closely – with so many pretty houses, you might easily overlook a few .

A guided walking tour might be a good option to learn more about the old town and the historic buildings . Check out prices for walking tours here .

While these places are absolutely stunning – I recommend, staying in the old town/Chapel Bridge for 2-4 hours max. Of course, it depends on how fast/slow you travel but I suggest spending the rest of the day “outdoors” – in nature, so reserve the rest of the day for some time at the lake and on top of a mountain.

Enjoy Lunch

You might want to have lunch now – and there you will have to choose from many options. In the old town, you have many restaurants where you can sit down and relax when having lunch.

Alternatively, you can buy some sandwiches/snacks and have them near the promenade – having lunch with a view, is just a great idea.

Chill at Lake Lucerne Promenade

Then it is time to leave the Old Town and head to Lake Lucerne again ( you will have seen it once you get out of the train station ). The promenade of Lake Lucerne in the city center is bustling and quite lively.

Lucerne promenade

Lake Lucerne ( Vierwaldstättersee in German ) is one of the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland – and one of the largest in the country . Given its size, it is unlikely you can walk around the whole lake . Depending on how much energy you have, you could walk around for hours and take some breaks .

From Lucerne Chapel Bridge, walk on the northern shores of Lake Lucerne – it is a beautiful, scenic way .  You can just walk a few minutes ( or longer ) and then hop on a bus to get back to the city center . If you have a Lucerne guest card, the bus ride is already included .

Hop on a Lake Lucerne Boat Tour

Cruising Lake Lucerne proves that it is rightly called gorgeous . Get on the boat in Lucerne ( there are several piers, so make sure to find the right one ) and go to Vitznau . This cruise takes about an hour and you get to see the beauty of the lake and also get to experience one of the best mountain views in Switzerland .

Lake Lucerne with a dog

There are different cruises – they differ in duration, stops, and also the kind of boats. I suggest getting to Vitznau station – because you can combine this cruise with another activity.

  • Regular boat cruises, including the one to Vitznau station, are included in the Swiss Travel Pass.
  • This boat trip to Vitznau station will take about one hour.

Head Up Mount Rigi

Mount Rigi   makes a great half – day trip – especially if you come here on a clear day, you can experience the most fantastic sunset in Switzerland . So, I suggest spending your afternoon and evening at Mount Rigi Kulm and ending your day t here .

Getting up Mount Rigi - a must-do activity in Lucerne

Up there are restaurants, a hotel, a spa, and above all, the panorama is INCREDIBLE – and you will not only have views of Lake Lucerne but also of Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz.

Mount Rigi sunset in Switzerland in the winter

Mount Rigi is actually a great place to visit year-round – except for a few days, the cogwheel operates every day. It is an amazing attraction at any time of the year . When you visit Lucerne in the winter , Mount Rigi is also a great option for all kinds of winter sports.

To go up The Queen of Mountains , you have several options, and I recommend the following route :

1) You need to get to the Vitznau boat / bus station . You can get there by bus, car, or boat from Lucerne.   It takes about one hour to get there from Lucerne ( either by boat or public transportation.

2) From there, you can either hike up or take the cogwheel train – going up via cogwheel is spectacular   The boats and cogwheels are coordinated and this should be smooth without waiting time in between .

I visited several Mount Rigi times in the summer and twice in the winter . My favorite time is to visit in the afternoon to enjoy the views during daylight and then watch the amazing sunset .

  • The cogwheel ride takes about 30 minutes and it is free with a Swiss Travel Pass in 2024.

Alternative: Visit the Swiss Museum of Transport / Verkehrshaus

Okay, this stop is just an extra – especially if you visit Lucerne with children or are into the history of transport . It would be hard to fit everything into a 1- day itinerary . So, this is a wonderful alternative if you want to skip the Lake Lucerne boat cruise and / or the Mount Rigi excursion .

The most famous museum in Lucerne is the Swiss Museum of Transport – and the most visited in all of Switzerland . You will find exhibits of all forms of transport, including trains, automobiles, ships, and aircraft, as well as communication technology . You could get to the museum if you walk along the Lake Lucerne promenade ( it is about 1 . 6 miles /2.5 km from Chapel Bridge ) or hop on a bus – or combine it with a Lake Lucerne boat cruise as it has its own boat station .

TRAVEL TIPS FOR A DAY TRIP TO LUCERNE

Here are some quick tips for your 1-day Lucerne itinerary before we talk about the top activities.

Where to Stay in Lucerne For One Night

Accommodations are not cheap in Lucerne, but we know that about Switzerland already, so it should not surprise us in such a popular destination . I have stayed in several hotels in Lucerne, and here are some tips .

Luxury: Schweizerhof Lucerne: If you want to book a luxury hotel in Lucerne, I recommend this beautiful 5* hotel.

➡️ Book your stay at Schweizerhof Lucerne here.

Mid-Range: Hotel des Alpes : On my last Lucerne trip, I stayed at Hotel des Alpes. The room view was amazing (and included views of the Chapel Bridge and Mount Pilatus).

Budget: T he Bed + Breakfast: If you want to stay in a budget hotel, have a look at this B&B. Some rooms have a shared bathroom, and some have a private one.

➡️ Book your stay at The Bed & Breakfast here.

Hotel Review Schweizerhof Lucerne

Where to Eat

Lucerne has some really nice restaurants, and as a vegetarian, it was one of the few places I always found enough options . I mostly got takeaway food and sat by the lake . But there are restaurants for all tastes and price ranges ( p . s . no super duper cheap food, though.

If you get the chance to dine at   Galerie Schweizerhof Restaurant, it has great views and reasonable prices for good food !  Also, there is a Tibits at the train station where  y ou will also find plenty of vegan food and it is a good alternative to heavy Swiss cuisine.

More Lucerne Tips

  • Wear comfy shoes, there might be some uphill walking and there are definitely a lot of cobbled-stoned streets
  • Bring a refillable water bottle and get some fresh mountain water from the fountains
  • Even in the summer, I would bring a sweater for the mountain tops as it can get chilly up there
  • Credit Cards are widely accepted in such a popular tourist spot like Lucerne – however, small shops might still only accept cash, so it might be a good idea to have some cash on you

FINAL THOUGHTS ON   LUCERNE IN ONE DAY ITINERARY

Lucerne the picturesque city nestled in the heart of Switzerland , makes a beautiful day trip with preserved medieval architecture. It sits amid snowcapped mountains on Lake Lucerne, with colorful old buildings lining the waterfront and cobbled streets. And with only one day, you can see some of the prettiest and main sights of the city.

It is surely one of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland   – o ffering   a wonderful mix of outdoor activities and cultural sights.   One day in Lucerne is not nearly enough to see all of its beauty, but you can see some main sights if you visit Lucerne in one day .

Lucerne Itinerary: Best Things to Do in Lucerne in One Day

Chapel Bridge - what to do in Lucerne

Wondering how to spend one day in Lucerne? This post has got you covered for all the best things to do in Lucerne, Switzerland to help you plan the perfect day trip itinerary.

Lucerne is one of Switzerland’s most popular tourist destinations, and justifiably so.

Nestled on the shores of Lake Lucerne and surrounded by extraordinary alpine scenery, Lucerne sums up the best of Switzerland: remarkable traditional and contemporary architecture, mesmerizing lakes and epic mountains.

As the largest city in central Switzerland, it’s also a great getaway for the region, with the superb views from Mounts Pilatus, Titlis and Rigi just at its doorstep.

Though not my favorite city in Switzerland (if I had to choose a favorite one, it would probably be Bern ), Lucerne does come really close.

It surely can feel a bit too touristy at times, but I guess that’s the price to pay for its uniqueness and popularity.

Since living in Zurich , I’ve visited Lucerne a couple of times already, always on day trips . I love being a tourist in my adopted country, which is actually one of the reasons why I moved here.

You can definitely have a good feel of Lucerne and see all the major attractions in one day.

If you’d like to explore the nearby mountains (and you should!), I recommend adding an extra day to your Lucerne itinerary.

So without further ado, here’s what to do in Lucerne in one day for first-time visitors.

Best things to do in Lucerne in one day:

Enjoy the lake views from europaplatz.

If you’re arriving in Lucerne by train or bus, you’ll catch the first glimpse of the gorgeous Lake Lucerne, with the Alps in the background, at the modern Europe Square.

Here you can also see the remarkable KKL Lucerne, a contemporary congress and culture center designed by French architect Jean Nouvel.

With 1840 seats, its famous Concert Hall is considered one of the best in the world.

You can book a guided tour of this incredible building here.

Lake Lucerne - Lucerne itinerary

Cross the Chapel Bridge

The Chapel Bridge is Lucerne’s most famous landmark.

This picturesque wooden bridge has been connecting the two banks of the River Reuss since the 14 th century.

It was built originally as part of the town’s fortifications. Today, it’s an icon of Lucerne and of Switzerland itself.

Also famous are its 17th-century paintings, which illustrate important episodes of the city and country’s history, as well as religious scenes.

Adjacent to the bridge, it’s the even older Water Tower, used over the centuries as a lookout tower, archive, treasury, prison, and armory.

In 1993, a fire destroyed most of Lucerne’s Chapel Bridge, including many of its paintings. But the emblem of the city was quickly rebuilt in only 8 months, continuing to be the most photographed Swiss monument.

Lucerne and the Chapel Bridge - best things to do in Lucerne in one

Stroll along Lucerne’s lakeside promenade

This is one of my favorite areas in Lucerne.

Strolling along the Schweizerhofquai and the Nationalquai, the city’s lakeside promenade, you can enjoy stunning views over Lake Lucerne all the way to the Alps.

This pleasant walk is dotted with 5-star hotels, restaurants, and cafés, as well as many green areas where you can relax while contemplating one of the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland.

Visit Lucerne’s Cathedral

Next, visit the imposing Cathedral of St. Leodegar, considered the most important Renaissance-style church in Switzerland.

A former Benedictine monastery dating back to the 8 th century, the Hofkirche was completely destroyed by a fire in 1633, with exception of its two Romanesque towers.

Lucerne's Cathedral

Admire the Lion Monument

Mark Twain described the Lion of Lucerne as “the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world”.

Carved directly on the stone, this giant lion is no doubt a special sight.

The monument is a memorial to the Swiss Guards who lost their lives in Paris while protecting the French King Louis XVI during the insurrection of the Tuileries, on 10 August 1792.

Lion Monument - things to do in Lucerne

Explore the Old Town

Take some time to get lost in Lucerne’s old town, admire its painted façades, or sit in one of the many alfresco restaurants and cafés near the River Reuss.

Lucerne’s medieval old town is a maze of narrow streets, picturesque squares, impressive churches, and historic buildings gorgeously decorated with frescoes.

Make sure to check out some of its most charming squares, including the Weinmarkt, where you can see Lucerne’s prettiest fountain, the Mühlenplatz, the largest square of the old town, the Kornmarkt, home to Lucerne’s Renaissance-style town hall, and the Hirschenplatz, with its picturesque traditional houses.

If you’d like to learn more about Lucerne’s history, I recommend joining a walking tour with a local guide here .

River Reuss

Walk the Musegg Wall

The Musegg Wall is a defensive wall built around the old town in the 14 th century. It’s one of the longest and best-preserved fortifications in Switzerland.

Today, you can walk part of the wall and visit three of its nine towers.

But one of the main reasons to come here is to admire the wonderful views of Lucerne and the lake and the spectacular mountain scenery.

Musegg Wall

Cross the Spreuer Bridge

While smaller and not as popular as Chapel Bridge, the Spreuer Bridge deserves a visit as well. With the clear advantage of fewer tourist crowds.

Like its older sister, this timber bridge dating back to the 15 th century is decorated with a series of paintings from the 17 th century representing the Dance of Death.

Have a look at the Needle Dam

Close to the Spreuer Bridge, the Needle Dam has been protecting Lucerne from floods since the 19 th century.

Considered a historical monument, this unique work of engineering regulates the level of the lake through a manual process of removing or inserting wooden needles still in use today.

It’s really more impressive than its sounds and certainly worth seeing if you’re in Lucerne.

Needle Dam

Visit the Jesuit Church

Dominating the left bank of the River Reuss, the Jesuit Church is, in my opinion, the most notable church in Lucerne.

It was the first large Baroque-style church built in Switzerland, between 1666 and 1677.

Nowadays, its rich interior is also used as a concert venue due to its fine acoustics.

Jesuit Church

Take a lake cruise

End your day on a perfect note with a dreamy cruise on Lake Lucerne, considered, legitimately, as one of the most scenic Swiss lakes.

This is the best way to admire the remarkable mountain backdrop, as well as the historical monuments and luxurious villas along the shoreline.

Definitely an unforgettable experience to have in Lucerne!

Book a 1-hour cruise on Lake Lucerne on board a panoramic yacht here.

Lake Lucerne

If you have more time in Lucerne:

Take a day trip to mount pilatus.

If you have an extra day in Lucerne, I recommend taking a day trip to Mount Pilatus, where you can ride the steepest cogwheel railway in the world and admire breathtaking views from 2,132 meters above sea level.

The classic Golden Round Trip from Lucerne to Mount Pilatus includes a ride to the top of Mount Pilatus on panorama gondolas and aerial cable car.

You can then hike to the summit, relax on the panoramic terrace, and have lunch in the panoramic restaurant.

On your you down, you’ll get to ride the world’s steepest cogwheel railway and take a 1-hour cruise back to Lucerne (during the summer months).

This trip is on my bucket list for a while now, but last time I visited Lucerne the weather and visibility on top of Mount Pilatus was not the best, so I ended up having to postpone it.

You can do the Golden Round Trip independently or book an organized day trip here .

If one day in Lucerne is all you have, look no further than this Lucerne itinerary.

This list of the best things to do in Lucerne, Switzerland covers everything you need to see and do on a Lucerne day trip, from the medieval old town to a scenic lake cruise.

Yes its really nice place and instagramable indeed! I’ve seen lots of photos of Lucern and its always the bridge, but looking the different photos there’s so much to see and snap too!

Definitely a pretty city and very easy to get too when in the vicinity

Lucerne looks very photogenic. I’m intrigued by the “dying lion” statue — what is the meaning behind it?

It’s a memorial to fallen war soldiers, VERY powerful!

We just got back from a trip that included Switzerland. We planned to go to Lucerne and then the weather crapped out on us so we missed it. Thanks for the tease on what we missed. It will definitely be on the plan for our next visit. Your photos certainly show a charming little town on the lake.

It rained when I was there, always a bummer when the weather doesn’t cooperate

You’re absolutely right that Lucerne is incredibly Instagrammable. The lake makes for some beautiful reflections and the buildings are so, as you said, picture-perfect! Next time I’m going to take the train up Mt. Pilatus!

I am a big fan of fondue. We would have to go on an Insta treasure hunt for hours to burn off all the cheese we would eat. Maybe even climb a mountain without a cog-wheel. Switzerland is so beautiful. It just inspires you to go outdoors.

There are plenty of fondue options for sure

This is a very fairytale like village that certainly lends itself to Instagrammable shots and you have managed to capture a good part of it’s essence here

It certainly is!

Already following you on Instagram and love your Lucern photos! They are lovely. Switzerland as a whole is such an instagrammable place from the mountains to the charming towns. Keep the photos comming!

Thank you so much!

Wow! So pretty. I’m all for that cheese fondue. Seriously love that covered bridge.

Cheese fondue (and chocolate) is a highlight to any time spent in Switzerland

How I wish I’d had time to see Lucerne when I was in Switzerland. I stepped from the train station and onto a boat! Beautiful pictures.

Oh wow, Lucerne really is super instagrammable. I can only imagine how the colours would pop on a sunny day. 🙂

Planning on Lucerne itinerary

Follow this Lucerne travel guide and make the most of your trip even if you’re short on time. These are the top sights and things to do on your Lucerne itinerary.

Things to do in One Day Lucerne itinerary :

Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke)

Jesuit church (jesuitenkirche), spreuer bridge, museggmauer and the nine towers, löwendenkmal (dying lion monument), explore old town.

  • Re-visit Chapel Bridge for Night View

Lucern Travel Tips : Not every destination can be properly explored in a single day, but Lucerne is the perfect size for this kind of shortstop with a perfect loop by walking at Lucern.

Started from Lucerne Station to Chapel Bridge to give you a glimpse of the past. Spend time at the Jesuitenkirche and walk through Spreuer Bridge. Next, climbed up to the Museggmauer and walked along the wall. Explore the towers and enjoy the beautiful aerial city view. The descent down from the hillside to the lion monument. Spend your remaining time and explore the old town. Re-visit Chapel Bridge at night when the light lit up. A perfect loop on Lucern’s itinerary.

Chapel Bridge Lucerne

Let´s start with the most popular attraction in Lucerne, Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) . When planning on the Lucerne itinerary, most of the travelers will be headed to Chapel Bridge for their first destination, and the same for us. Being the most iconic landmark of Lucerne, the Chapel Bridge is a must for any visitor to the city. Your visit to Lucerne is not complete without taking a selfie with the bridge in the backdrop.

With a convenient location, just a stone‘s throw from the train station, and easy to reach. From the train station, it takes you about 5 minutes to Chapel Bridge since it’s only 500 m away.

Named after the nearby St. Peter’s Chapel, the bridge was built originally in 1333 as part of the city’s fortifications. It is unique and has historical importance in containing a number of interior paintings dating back to the 17th century.

Sadly, part of Chapel Bridge have been burnt down in the 90s. Subsequently restored, the Kapellbrücke is the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe, as well as the world’s oldest surviving truss bridge. It is now the city’s symbol in Lucerne, connecting the Old Town and the new town, across the Reuss River.

Paintings under the roof of the Chapel Bridge’s walkway

Painting in Chapel Bridge

Being on the bridge looking at the Alps feels quite unreal. You’ll see the Vierwaldstättersee (Lake Lucerne), one of Switzerland’s most beautiful lakes, and have a great view of the Alps. A serene and breathtaking city’s waterfront scenery.

When walking along with it, don’t forget to look upwards as you walk the length of the bridge to appreciate the remaining original paintings under the roof of the walkway . Mostly depicting important events and scenes from the city’s history with historical notes in English and German.

Restaurants are dotted all along the lake and bridge from fine dining to quick easy snacks. It is an excellent place to have coffee or lunch before proceeding to the next attraction.

Lucerne Travel Tips: Recommend visiting the bridge in the daytime and coming back at night. Chapel Bridge is magical at night when the lights are on.

Jesuitenkirche Lucerne

Just a short walk from the Chapel Bridge will head you to Jesuit Church (Jesuitenkirche), the first large baroque Catholic Church built in Switzerland , north of the Alps.

The construction of the church began in 1667 and was officially inaugurated 10 years later with the high altar and side altars completed over the years. The church interior is exquisite throughout. It is very gorgeous with crafted woodworkings along its being very light and bright inside makes it a very unique church.

Despite its stunning looks, it did not take me long to go through, and easy to squeeze into your Lucerne itinerary. Take some time to immerse yourself in the beautiful interior and prayers. A quick stop for your trip to Lucerne.

The church is open all day with no entrance fee, but a donation will be appreciated. Guidebooks are available for a fee of €5.

Lucerne Travel Tips : Non-flash photos were allowed in Jesuit Church, Lucerne.

Lucerne itinerary - View from Spreuer Bridge

Despite the famous is the Chapel Bridge, there is another lesser-known wooden covered bridge that is worth a visit in Lucerne. Located just a few meters behind Chapel Bridge and the church, you´ll find Chapel Bridge´s little sister, the Spreuer Bridge. The bridge was originally built together with the Museggmauer in the 14th century and rebuilt after further destruction in 1566 due to a storm.

Like the Chapel Bridge, there are numerous paintings on the bridge, many of which are original that date back to the 17th century. The paintings are exceptional, especially the subject of death for all the paintings is eye-opening.

Adjacent to the bridge is the Needle Dam, a marvel of engineering that works today just as it did in the mid-1800s. You’ll get a closer look at the Needle Dam from it as well when walking through the Spreuer Bridge.

Although it is not as impressive as Chapel Bridge, the views of and from the bridge are wonderful. It is less busy with an easy minute walk from Chapel Bridge. It is worth the walk and pictures. A not to be missed in Lucern itinerary!

Museggmauer and the Nine Towers

Next, take a walk away from the town, walk up the hillside to the Museggmauer and the Nine Towers . It was a nice trip on foot, rewarded with fantastic views from the walkway along to the top of this fortress.

The old city wall and its towers are part of the old Medieval fortifications for Old Town Lucerne. Different portions of the wall and the towers date back to the 1300 and 1400s and were a fundamental part of the old city’s defenses along with the river and Lake Lucerne. It is very well preserved and is well worth the time to take it all in.

Zyt Clock Tower Lucerne

There are 4 towers open to the public and can be ascended, including the Zyt Tower which is filled with ancient clocks and mechanisms which still are active.

Built by Hans Luter, Zyt Tower has a huge clock on it and is the city’s oldest clock is still working today. Beware that the stairs are steep. But there are sections of the wall where can have decent views of Old Town and Lake Lucerne below.

Dying Lion Monument

Next, proceed to the Löwendenkmal (Dying Lion Monument) on your Lucern itinerary. A truly moving memorial, this lion monument features a carved relief of a dying lion above a still pond. It is the oldest figurative monument in Switzerland, commemorating Swiss soldiers who lost their lives defending King Louis in the 18th century during the French revolution. A total of 760 soldiers died.

The lion sculpture is so well carved and has such a sad expression on its face that is so life-like. Fabulous workmanship and this monument say a million things.

We enjoyed reading the inscriptions about the history of why the lion sculpture was commissioned. A great spot to stop by during your visit to Lucerne.

Exploring Lucerne Old Towns

Spend your time in Lucerne’s Altstadt, one of the most beautiful Old Towns in all of Europe. Compared to Zurich and Geneva, Lucerne is more packed with historic buildings and medieval architecture. Lucern’s old town is very scenic with a very vibrant atmosphere.

A walk through the old town makes for a very pleasant amble. The narrow cobblestone streets lead you to lines of charming shops, cafés, and restaurants.

There are also many decorative buildings in which the paintings tell stories. You’ll also find various beautiful old churches, numerous squares with fountains, and well-preserved city walls and towers along the splendid walk. Each of them has its uniqueness and history.

Make sure to check out some of its most charming squares in Lucerne’s Altstadt:

  • Weinmarkt, where you can see Lucerne’s prettiest fountain.
  • Mühlenplatz, the largest square of the old town.
  • Kornmarkt, is home to Lucerne’s Renaissance-style town hall.
  • Hirschenplatz, with its picturesque traditional houses.

Consider getting a guide to learn the details, as it is most worthwhile. Take your time strolling in the old town to marvel at the magnificent buildings and the beautiful scenery.

Chapel Bridge (Night View)

Chapel Bridge Night View

Lastly, end your Lucern itinerary by re-visit the Chapel Bridge in the evening or nighttime . Even though we visited Chapel Bridge during the day, our favorite time to visit was in the evening. It is much more exciting to see the place at night when the light lit up.

The bridge that goes across the Lake of Lucerne at night is scenic. With the lights shimmering on the surrounding water at night, the view is extremely magical and romantic. It is definitely worth another stroll at night while visiting Lucerne!

One of the most popular cities in Switzerland ; Lucerne is a must-visit destination characterised by arresting alpine panoramas and the charm of the medieval old town

The city of Lucerne has a sophisticated yet relaxed character. High end shopping, cosy restaurants and impressive historical sights and architecture.

While there is plenty to keep you busy over two days in Lucerne city , the surrounding region also offers a plethora of outdoor activities, from scenic lake cruises , hikes, mountain day trips , sledding and more.

How to Get to Lucerne

Lucerne is in the heart of the country, the gateway to central Switzerland. The train is the best way to travel around Switzerland and to Lucerne whether you arrive via Genova or Zurich.

The Lucerne train station is conveniently located right in the centre of town close to hotels, so it is never too far with luggage.  You can get all the information here in our Two Days in Switzerland Guide about train travel in Switzerland.

Lucerne is also where you will start or finish on the panoramic Golden Pass Train which travels between Lucerne and Montreux .

Where to Stay in Lucerne

The centre of Lucerne is split into Altstadt (Old Town) and Neustadt (New Town) connected by several bridges including the famous Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge).

Everything in Lucerne is close as the distance between the two parts of town is only a few minutes across the bridge. So where you choose to stay may be determined by style and budget. Be aware, accommodation in Switzerland is generally more expensive than in many other European countries.

Old town of Lucerne across the lake with the spires of the The Church of St. Leodegar.

The old town is the most visited part of the city with stunning architecture and convenient access to many of the best attractions. There are plenty of charming hotels in Old Town loaded with character. However, accommodation in Lucerne Old Town will generally come with a higher price tag.

If budget isn’t an issue, Boutique Hotel Weisses Kreuz (which is an adults-only hotel) and the Hotel Des Alpes , a best seller in Lucerne, offer beautiful accommodation in the heart of historic Old Town.

Across the river, in New Town, you will find many of the cities bars and restaurants, which is perfect for anyone interested in Lucerne’s nightlife. The train station is also on the New Town side.

If you’re travelling on a tighter budget, the hotels in New Town may have better rates. You could also consider one of the hostels in Lucerne . If you’re travelling alone, a quality hostel is a good way to avoid excessive room rates if you are on a budget.

2 Day Lucerne Itinerary

A popular day trip from Zurich , many quickly realise you could easily spend up to a week in Lucerne, exploring the city and incredible surrounds (Lucerne is also a great hub for day trips).

However, not everyone has unlimited time in Switzerland. This is why we have come up with a great 2-day itinerary so this gorgeous town isn’t rushed, even on the tightest of itineraries.

Our 2-day itinerary will help you maximise your time so you can cover all the best things to do in Lucerne.

The river of Lucerne Old Town and new pedestrian bridge.

Morning. Explore Old Town

On your first day in Lucerne, head off early to explore Old Town. These are some of the key attractions in Lucerne Old Town.

If you prefer to take a guided tour of Lucerne Old Town including the Chapel Bridge, a 2 hr guided tour starts from as little as CHF 20 pp (~21 USD) Get full tour details here.

Chapel Bridge

Start your explorations of Old Town with the Chapel bridge. The iconic covered walkway, the oldest sheltered bridge in the world, is a symbol of Lucerne and one of the cities main tourist attractions.

Nearly lost to a fire in 1993, the bridge has undergone massive restoration work to ensure it remains a symbol of Lucerne’s history and picturesque cityscape, hopefully for centuries to come.

Covered wooden pedestrian bridge with watch tower.

Jesuit Church

You’ll spot this adorable baroque church across the river, a few minutes from Chapel Bridge. It was the first baroque church to be built in Switzerland north of the alps. While it cuts an impressive picture from the outside with the alps in the background, it is equally beautiful inside.

Jesuit Church on waterfront in Lucerne

Lion Monument

Head deeper into the old town and browse the shops along the cobbled pavements. You’ll eventually reach the Lion Monument. A magnificent monument carved into a natural cliff dedicated to the Swiss soldiers who lost their lives in the French revolution.

The Lion Monument carved into cliff.

Glacier Garden

Directly next to the Lion Monument is the Glacier Garden which explains some of Lucerne’s geological history. While this might sound dull, it is actually brimming with fascinating facts such as; Lucerne has been both a glacier and a subtropical desert. You can see glacier potholes and fossils in the garden exhibits from these periods.

For the kids, there is a mirror maze with over 90 mirrors to get lost in and an observation tower with views across the city.

The Church of St. Leodegar

The twin spires of Lucerne’s main church are a dominant feature of the city’s skyline.  The church actually predates the city itself and played a key founding role.

Inside the church, you can see the magnificent organ which weighs over 30 tonnes and has 7,374 pipes. When it was built in 1640, it was recorded as having the tallest (10.7 m) and heaviest (383 kg) pipe in the world.

The twin spires of the Church of St. Leodegar in Lucerne.

Musegg Wall

The Musegg Wall is the  870m, 14-century rampart with nine towers that once formed part of the cities fortifications. The views from the top over Lucerne are well worth the short stroll up from the old town.

Mid Morning Take a Boat Cruise

After a morning in Old Town, take a scenic boat cruise on board the luxury yacht MS Saphir . There is no better way to appreciate the incredible scenic beauty of Lucerne and the Swiss Alps than from the deck of a luxury yacht.

The one hour cruise around Lake Lucerne was a definite highlight of my time in Lucerne.

Two people sitting on the foredeck of a luxury yacht on Lake Lucerne Switzerland. A cruise is one of the beat things to do in Lucerne.

You have picturesque panoramic views from the deck of the boat passing some of Lucerne’s most important historical monuments and famous attractions.

A pre-recorded audio tour, gives passengers an overview of Lucerne’s history, information about some of the best things to do around Lake Lucerne and some interesting facts about the lake itself.

Prices start from as little as CHF 27 pp(~€26) for a 1-hour cruise on Lake Lucerne. See here for full cruise details and bookings .

After the boat tour, there are plenty of great places around the pier for lunch.

Maris Gras is great for a quick bite and a coffee or Mill’ Feuille if you’re after a bigger meal. Also, check out Pura if you’re looking for vegan options.

Afternoon Swiss Transport Museum

The Swiss Transport Museum, opened in 1959 is the most visited museum in Switzerland and for good reason.

The museum has fascinating and interactive exhibits spanning the history of the transport industry covering road, rail, marine and air and space travel.

The museum’s car collection which covers vintage cars right through to the Red Bull Formula 1 racing car is reason enough to visit, even for those only mildly interested in automotive history.

Red Bull Race car in the Swiss Transport Museum

The space exhibits are also particularly impressive. See the mars rovers, the capsule used by Felix Baumgartner in the Red Bull Stratos space jump and experience what it’s like to be in a space station in a huge revolving cube.

All of the exhibits are family-friendly with fun games and interactions throughout the tour. A great attraction for anyone travelling with kids.

Opening Times:

The Swiss Transport Museum is open 365 days of the year between 10.0 am – 6.00 pm in summer and 10.00 am – 5.00 pm in winter. Prices vary according to the attractions. See here for ticket prices .

Mount Titlis

On your second day in Lucerne, get out of the city and enjoy a quintessential Swiss Alps mountain experience . There are a number of fantastic day trips from Lucerne to choose from including Mount Pilatus, Mount Rigi and Mount Titlis .

I recommend  Mount Titlis, the tallest of the three at over 3,000m above sea level.

Beautiful snowy views over the mountains from the cable car on the way up to Mount Titlis on a day trip from Lucerne

To reach the summit of Mount Titlis, you take a small cable car that glides through the lower parts of the mountain. If you visit in winter, you will be treated to gorgeous snow-covered alpine vistas.

From here you’ll take two further cable cars to reach the summit. The second of these is called the Rotair which is the world’s first revolving cable car. The car spins 360⁰ as it climbs, so you always have a panoramic view without leaving your spot.

Once at the summit, there are plenty of activities to keep you busy including:

The Glacier Cave

Take a walk through the 150m magical ice cave bathed in serene blue glacial light. The natural cave 10m below the surface of the glacier is estimated to be over 5,000 years old. It also features some very cool art installations created in the ice.

The blue tunnels inside the Glacier Cave on Mount Titlis.

The highlight of the Mount Titlis summit is the Cliff Walk. The 100m suspension bridge connecting two summits is the highest suspension bridge in Europe. The bridge will close in poor weather, which sadly happened on our visit, so check online before you visit if it is high on your list.

The Ice Flyer is a chair lift that allows you to ‘fly’ over the glacier, offering you a thrilling and very different perspective of the glacier. The Ice Flyer costs an additional 12 CHF per person.

There are also several shops at the summit station as well as a restaurant serving full meals and snacks at reasonable prices.

If you don’t want to self-guide, the round trip from Lucerne to Mount Titlis can be completed as part of an all-inclusive 6 hr tour.

The tour includes:

  • Transfers with a professional guide.
  • Aerial cableway to Mt Titlis’ summit with Rotair Gondola
  • Snow tubing at Glacier Park (May to October, in winter at Trübsee. Subject to snow conditions,)
  • Ice Flyer chair lift (weather permitting)
  • Titlis Cliff Walk & Glacier Cave (weather permitting)

See here for full tour details and cost.

Evening Enjoy a Typical Swiss Fondue

There is nothing better than a Fondue after an active day in the Swiss Alps. It is, after all, the food highlight of any trip to Switzerland. One could say if you didn’t try some cheese on your visit to Switzerland, then did you even go at all?

The restaurant at Hotel Des Alpes is a great place for a typical Swiss Fondue. Sit on the terrace and enjoy the view of the Chapel Bridge while you indulge in delicious Fondue, served with chunks of fresh bread, mushrooms, olives and potatoes.

The cheese fondue is a meal in itself; however, if you fancy trying some other local dishes, the restaurant also does a very good Aelpler Magronen (Swiss-style macaroni) and Crispy Roesti.

A perfect finish to your two days in Lucerne. Fondue overlooking one of Switzerland’s most beautiful towns.

Is it just me, or does anyone else love making spontaneous trips? I love wandering, and oftentimes it’s enough for me to enjoy the place I’m visiting.

As much as I hate planning, it seems necessary to meticulously prepare for a trip to Switzerland because it’s an expensive country to visit. We want to maximize every minute of our journey by visiting as many places as possible, without sacrificing the quality of our experience.

That’s what we aim to achieve in today’s post—to make your time in Lucerne’s old town maximized and worth it. We all also want a relaxing, leisurely trip, right?

So, perhaps we can start by answering the question, “how much time do you really need in Lucerne’s old town?”

There’s really no specific length of time required to spend in Lucerne’s old town, but you should at least allocate half a day to see its most iconic landmarks and unmissable tourist attractions. If you can at least be familiar with the routes and have an idea of what to do at each point of interest, I think you can have a laid-back journey in Lucerne’s old city.

So, let’s now get into the details.

Summary: Half Day In Old Town Lucerne

For me, there are seven specific places in Lucerne’s old town that all travelers should see. They are:

  • The Chapel Bridge — the most iconic landmark in Lucerne and Switzerland
  • The Jesuit Church — an awe-inspiring architectural marvel
  • Spreuer Bridge — a landmark with special artwork on its gable
  • Musegg Wall — one of the best preserved intact medieval fortifications in all of Switzerland
  • Lion Monument — a meaningful artwork and landmark, described by Mark Twain as “the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world.”
  • Hofkirche or the Church of Saint Leodegar — an eye-catching landmark, best to go for a selfie or a photo souvenir in Lucerne.
  • Square(s) in the old town— the place(s) where you can find the beautiful little things in Lucerne.

Based on my estimates, you can see the top attractions in the old town of Lucerne in about 4 hours. About 3 hours will be spent visiting the actual sights, and the remaining time can be used for traveling between them within the old town.

Here are more details:

The tourist attractions listed above are in a sequence that, if you follow, you won’t be retracing your steps. Essentially, it follows a round trip path (assuming you will be arriving in Lucerne by train) from the train station to the Reuss River area, then the Musegg Wall, the eastern old town, the central old town, and back to the train station.

Below is a map showing their exact location and the route for this half-day Lucerne old town walking tour itinerary.

Their location in Google Maps is linked at the end of this post (resources).

Destinations Half Day Lucerne Walking Tour

For this part, you’ll get more ideas about the seven places I mentioned in the summary of the walking tour. You’ll learn what they are all about and why they are worth your time. The location and the unmissable experience/things you must see for each destination will also be discussed here.

Note that these destinations aren’t only landmarks and interesting places you will see along the route of this walking tour. Some of them are:

  • Rathaus — is the town hall of Lucerne, a landmark with notable architecture and a clock tower. You can find it between the Chapel Bridge and the Jesuit Church .
  • Historisches Museum Luzern & Natur-Museum Luzern — A nice place to visit if you want to learn more about the local history and flora & fauna in the region. They are just beside the Spreuer Bridge and are a nice alternative destination when there is bad weather.
  • Glacier Garden — is a geological and botanical park that features a series of exposed rock formations and plant specimens from various geological periods. The rock formations were created during the Ice Age when glaciers covered the area and left behind a series of grooves and ridges in the rock. You can find it just beside the Lion Monument .
  • The Bourbaki Panorama — is a circular painting located in a circular building, and it depicts the retreat of the French army during the Franco-Prussian War in 1871. The painting is over 100 meters in length and nearly 10 meters in height. You can find the panorama between the Lion Monument and Hofkirche .

I linked these tourist attractions’ official website in this post’s resources section. Okay! Let’s now talk about the seven must-see tourist attractions in Lucerne for your half-day walking tour.

Check out my other itineraries (and maps) about Lucerne. They should give you idea to enjoy Lucerne in different ways. You can read them here:

Destination 1: Chapel Bridge

If you travel to see bucket list destinations (or the world’s greatest places), arriving in Lucerne by train means you can check one off your list right away.

That’s because of the Chapel Bridge, the most iconic landmark of Lucerne. You can literally see this bridge from the square in front of the train station, particularly in front of Torbogen (Archway) Luzern—the archway and the remaining part of Lucerne’s old train station.

The Chapel Bridge is the long wooden bridge that diagonally crosses the Reuss River. I mentioned that the Chapel Bridge is a bucket list tourist attraction because it is the world’s oldest surviving truss bridge and Europe’s oldest wooden covered bridge.

You should visit the Chapel Bridge because it’s indeed a unique and beautiful landmark, especially with the Water Tower that stands beside it. The Chapel Bridge also has special triangular gable paintings that depict the history of Lucerne. Surely, a visit to the Chapel Bridge will be an experience like no other!

If you like taking photos, the Chapel Bridge is the most compelling place to fill up your camera’s storage. That is especially true during warmer months when the Chapel Bridge is decorated with beautiful colorful flowers.

And oh, watch out for the lovely swans that linger below the bridge!

Read my full article about the Chapel Bridge , where I discuss everything you need to know when visiting it.

Destination 2: Jesuit Church

Jesuit Church is one of the landmarks in Lucerne that makes the view of the old town Lucerne with the Reuss River so lovely. Dominating the skyline with its twin onion-top towers, you should be able to see the Jesuit Church anywhere in the Reuss River.

So, what’s the Jesuit Church in Lucerne all about?

The Jesuit Church, like the Chapel Bridge, is a notable landmark in Lucerne because it is the first large baroque church that was constructed north of the Alps. It dates back to the 17th century, which is also the time when the Protestant church spread in Europe.

It was built with a baroque style, chosen in order to emphasize the traditions of Catholicism, particularly through its visual culture and the veneration of saints. Although it was primarily baroque, the most eye-catching features of it are its rococo embellishments in the interiors. That is the reason why I think you should visit the Jesuit Church.

For me, the Jesuit Church is an architectural gem, and it’s worth visiting for the grandiosity you’ll behold. For Catholics like me, the Jesuit Church has small chapels on the side where you can find artworks and relics of saints. I believe they can help you meditate and pray.

See what it is like inside the church and discover where you can photograph it from my post about the Jesuit Church .

Destination 3: Spreuer Bridge

Aside from the Chapel Bridge, the Spreuer Bridge is another covered wooden bridge you can find in Lucerne. It is the shorter version of the Chapel Bridge and has triangular gable paintings with a different theme.

Let’s say you are currently in Jesuitenplatz, the square in front of the Jesuit Church, then you can already spot the Spreuer Bridge. It is the second bridge next to Reussbrüke (the closest bridge) to the west.

I think you should visit the Spreuerbrüke because of the triangular paintings it has on its gables. These paintings are said to be one of the largest cycles of the painting depicting Danse Macabre. For me, they’re scary yet interesting artworks because they remind us of the truth that death can come at any point in our lives or to anyone, regardless of status and wealth.

A visit to Spreuerbrüke usually lasts only for a very few minutes. What may make it a little longer is the small chapel in the middle of the bridge. You may want to check its stained glass window and different figurines depicting biblical characters.

Destination 4: Musegg Wall

If you’re also a fan of movies/series set in the medieval ages like me, perhaps Musegg Wall will also be your favorite destination in Lucerne. It’s where your fantasies come to life, your imagination stimulated: scenes of soldiers marching, arrows flying, dragons breathing fire!

As its name suggests, Musegg Wall is a medieval fortification of the old town Lucerne in Musegg in the northern portion of the old city. Back in the day, it was a part of a 2-layer fortification that safeguarded the old city since the 14th century.

You should come and see Musegg Wall up close because it is an excellent example of medieval military architecture in Switzerland. Each of its 9 towers has its own unique style! Most importantly, Musegg Wall is the most preserved medieval wall in the country that still stands in one piece.

Of course, you wouldn’t want to miss a unique experience from Musegg Wall: climbing the towers and walking in the ramparts—a magical time transporting experience!

There are four towers open to the public. Among the four, you should at least try climbing Männliturm (the only tower with an open roof deck) and Zytturm (a mural-decorated clock tower with clockwork exhibits inside).

Do you want to see what’s inside Zytturm? Or what’s the view from the ramparts? Discover everything you need to know from my other post dedicated to Musegg Wall .

Note: The towers of Musegg Wall are open only during non-winter months. However, you can still check the wall through the hiking trails beside it.

Destination 5: Lion Monument

On the hilly east side of the old city, we can find the Lion Monument, another famous tourist attraction in Lucerne. Of the places that you’ll visit (following this itinerary), the Lion Monument is the newest that you will find. The monument was built in the early 19th century.

The Lion Monument is a memorial for the Swiss soldiers who perished while defending the last French Monarch during the French Revolution.

It is a very meaningful sculpture of a lion, full of emotion. You can see it on its face, which depicts excruciating pain—symbolic of the experience that the Swiss soldiers and their family members had.

I think the Lion Monument is unmissable for several reasons. Aside from being a meaningful landmark, it is also a beautiful work of art. It may not be so apparent in the photos, but the Lion Monument is gigantic!

Believe it or not, the Lion Monument is 10 meters long and 6 meters tall.

If you also love introspecting while you travel, the Lion Monument can be a fantastic place you can go within the city. The Main Lion monument is above a calming pond inside a park covered with trees. You can sit by the benches and reflect on the message that the monument implicitly represents: loyalty and bravery.

Learn more about the Lion Monument and the things you must know before coming from my other post.

Destination 6: Hofkirche

Hofkirche, or the Church of Saint Leodegar, is the most noticeable landmark in the old city when sightseeing from the shores of Lake Lucerne. Its pointed twin spires are an eye-catcher across the skyline of Lucerne.

Yet, indeed, Hofkirche is more than a landmark in Lucerne. It is a religious structure that has both historical and architectural significance. Although its original appearance is no more, it’s mind-blowing to think that this church has already been there for over a thousand years.

For architecture enthusiasts like me, Hofkirche’s most notable attribute is its mix of German renaissance and gothic styles. It’s a unique find, which I think is a reason why you must visit it.

You can already see its eclectic style before entering the church—right on its facade and main portal. Gorgeous reliefs, intricate murals, and beautiful wood crafts await you there. Those and the pointed spires make Hofkirche one of the best places in Lucerne to take selfies and capture photo souvenirs.

Aside from marveling at Hofkirche’s gorgeous facade, you may also come inside the church to see impressive altarpieces and wrought iron gates. Check what else you can find inside this church from my post about Hofkirche or the Church of Saint Leodegar .

Destination 7: Old City (Lunch or Dinner)

After hours in the bridges, walls, monuments, and churches of Lucerne’s old city, I’m sure you’ll be hungry. That’s why it’s only after you visit them that you must come to Lucerne’s central old town. It’s where you can find the best restaurants with alfresco seating, offering beautiful views of Lake Lucerne or Reuss River.

Not only will your tummies be satisfied, but also your eyes! Aside from the calming and scenic views of the lake and river, it’s here in the central part of the old city, you can find the most beautiful houses and fountains in Lucerne.

Have a look:

These beautiful artworks you can find on the facades of the houses in the old town of Lucerne are called Lüftlmalerei. As far as I know, they are cultural art originating from Bavaria and Austria. It is the same with the fountains in the city.

Lüftlmalerei usually depicts the favorite saints and the occupation of the house owners. Sometimes, they just serve as decorative ornamentation. Regardless of what this Lüftlmalerei depicts, it is one of the beautiful things you can find in Lucerne that will fascinate you as you explore the city.

You don’t have to worry about where these houses and beautiful fountains are in Lucerne’s old town. They are located in the old town’s squares like Hirschenplatz, Sternenplatz, Weinmarkt and Kornmarkt.

Here is the map to guide you to find them:

What To Do Before Or After The Half Day Walking Tour?

So, that’s it! That’s how you can efficiently explore Lucerne’s Old Town on foot in a few hours or half a day.

Since the walking tour can be completed within a few hours, you may still have a lot of spare time in Lucerne if you plan to stay in the city for a day or two. If you need ideas on where to go or what to do to fill that time, I have five suggestions for you:

If you need more relaxation after l strolling in the Lucerne old town for a few hours, perhaps it might be the boat you need. For a special experience, try not the ordinary boat tour but the 1-Hour Cruise on a Panoramic Yacht instead.

During the 1-Hour Cruise on the Panoramic Yacht in Lake Lucerne, you’ll marvel at the picturesque landscapes and famous attractions this region has to offer.

You’ll experience the beauty of the lake from a unique perspective as you sit on the water terrace suspended above the surface. Relax on the upper deck with an adjustable roof, where you can take in the fresh air and sunshine while enjoying a multi-sensory experience in nature.

As you cruise along the lake, you’ll have a personal audio guide to give you insights into Lake Lucerne and its rich history. It’s a unique way to discover new things as you’ll be, at the same time, taking in the stunning mountain views and charming towns and villages that line the shores.

With the peaceful surroundings, you’ll surely be transported to a world of relaxation and tranquility. You can learn more about the 1-Hour Cruise on the Panoramic Yacht in Lake Lucerne here.

Swiss Museum Of Transport

In the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne, you can unravel the fascinating history behind all forms of travel. From road, rail, and water up to the air, this museum covers it all.

Step inside and discover an array of exhibits and interactive displays that explore the evolution of transportation over the years. Learn about the advancements and innovations that have shaped how we move from place to place, and see a wide range of vehicles and artifacts up close.

For a sweet and memorable experience, take a ride on the Swiss Chocolate Adventure, where you can catch glimpses of the chocolate-making process and get sweet treats from master chocolatiers.

In addition to the exhibits, the museum also has a Film Theatre and a Planetarium, where you can catch daily screenings of numerous educational films.

Make the most of your visit with a day pass , which allows you to immerse yourself in a fully interactive experience at the Swiss Museum of Transport.

Hammetschwand Elevator

Did you know that the Chapel Bridge isn’t the only bucket list destination around Lake Lucerne? Another is the Hammetschwand elevator—the highest exterior elevator in Europe.

Hammetschwand Elevator is located on the Bürgenstock plateau, directly opposite the city of Lucerne across Lake Lucerne. On the top of the elevator, visitors are rewarded with stunning views of Lake Lucerne, Lucerne, and the Central Plateau.

This elevator is often visited on a day trip to Bürgenstock resort, where you can find scenic hiking trails, ride funicular trains, and dine in fancy restaurants having a wide selection of international cuisine. Going to Bürgenstock resort involves a round-trip boat ride across lake Lucerne, as well.

If you are interested in visiting Hammetschwand Elevator and Bürgenstock resort? Check out this tour package to Mount Bürgenstock by Ferry and Funicular .

  • Meggenhorn Castle

Like most lakes in the Alps, Lake Lucerne also has castles and beautiful villas. If you want to see a magical scene of the Swiss countryside before/after the half-day tour, these castles are the place to be.

Imagine a place where you can see a castle, lake, and mountains combined together—it’s a scene straight out of a fairy tale, isn’t it?

Let’s say you’re already in Lucerne, and you just finished the walking tour. Wherever you are in the old city, you are now less than an hour from Meggenhorn Castle.

It’s one of the castles on the shores of Lake Lucerne. And as described, it’s a magical place—we can consider it a hidden gem in Lucerne.

A hidden gem because only a few tourists know Meggenhorn Castle. (You can learn more about the Meggenhorn Castle and the route to this castle from the links in the sources section of this post)

But in a nutshell, Meggenhorn Castle is a 19th-century castle perched on a peninsula overlooking views of Lake Lucerne and has a panorama that includes Mount Rigi, Mount Pilatus, and the city of Lucerne. It’s an ultimately picturesque place, and I think you’d not regret coming there, particularly if you come during warmer, sunny months.

You can get to Meggenhorn Castle with a single bus ride (bus #24) from Lucerne train station and hike for 15 minutes.

But if you want, you can join a tour of Meggenhorn Castle. It’s a 4-hour trip, perfect before and after the half-day old town Lucerne tour. It includes visiting a 14th-century settlement in Lucerne, seeing old chalets, and more. Learn more about Lucerne Lakeside and Villa Private Walking Tour here .

Mount Pilatus

Mount Pilatus is another destination in Switzerland that “ may” match your schedule with the half-day walking tour in Lucerne’s old town. However, to fully enjoy it, you must visit it on a laid-back day trip. This is why I don’t fully recommend it.

Learn more about Mount Pilatus and the 5 reasons why it’s a nice day trip from Lucerne .

Right next to Zurich airport is the Zürich Flughafen train station. The reason why I chose to buy this ticket and the guide for transport in Switzerland you can read details via the link below.

Because I had booked a train ticket from Zurich to Lucerne online before, so I and my whole family went to the 3rd floor of the station for the breakfast, rested and waited until the train departed to Lucerne city.

The downside of buying train tickets online is that the ticket only applies to the train you have booked, but when you book online you will be able to buy SuperSaver ticket type at a much cheaper price. While if you buy tickets at the train station, you can take any train to the location where you chose when buying the ticket.

My whole family of 4 people stayed at the homestay of sister Angelina Niederberger . She is married to a Swiss man and has an extremely beautiful daughter. Her homestay can accommodate 1-4 people and the location is very convenient because it is close to supermarket, bus stop and train station.

Just checked-in at the homestay and eager to go out, it rained. However, the cold rain does not discourage of exploring the beautiful city of Lucerne of my family.

After unpacking, taking a shower and resting, we took a bus to go into downtown Lucerne. It only takes about 10 minutes to reach the Luzern Bahnhof central station (Lucerne railway station). From here you can walk around the old town of this city.

Lucerne itinerary 2 days: Exploring Mount Rigi, Lucerne

Actually, I originally planned to go to Mount Pitalus , however, because the boat to getting to Mount Pitalus was not active yet. And one thing you definitely must-do when coming to Lucerne is to take a boat on Lake Lucerne. So, I changed to explore Rigi Mountain, which has an equally beautiful view.

To buy tickets to get to Mount Rigi, go to Ferry Terminal Pier 1 right opposite Lucerne Hbf central station. Just cross the street to reach the ticketing booth of this pier. (See the first photo of the section: Best places to visit in Lucerne). You can buy tickets to get to any mountain in Lucerne here.

Mt. Rigi Classic Round Trip from Lucerne by Boat and Mountain Railway

The fare to get to Rigi Mountain is CHF95/round trip (2nd class), which includes boat ride on Lake Lucerne to Vitznau pier, and from Vitznau to take a train to the top of Mount Rigi Kulm. If you already have a Half Fare Card like me, the fare is only CHF58.50.

Alternatively, you can buy tickets to Rigi online at SwissAlps’s website or Rigi Mt’s website . However, I recommend you check the weather forecast first and go to the Rigi mt website to see how the weather is on the top of the mountain via the webcam before deciding to go. Tickets can be bought at the pier.

Sailing on Lake Lucerne

The city of Lucerne is so small that you can explore it entirely on foot within a few hours. However, the activity I recommend the most is take a boat cruise on Lake Lucerne to fully enjoy the wonderful beauty of Lucerne.

Fortunately, the second day in Lucerne, It was warm and sunny. A perfect day to cruise, and go up the mountain for sightseeing.

Take the train to the top of Mount Rigi.

As soon as we get off the boat at Vitznau Pier, you will see the train station to reach the top of Mount Rigi Kulm. Mount Rigi is known as the Queen of the mountains in Switzerland.

At a height of more than 1600m, Mount Rigi, though not as high as Mount Pitalus or Titlis, but it has a distinct beauty, with a view down to Lake Lucerne, with the Black Forest far away, and the majestic views of the Alps. The Rigi is also home to Europe’s first gear train.

When get on the train, you should remember to choose a seat next to the window, on the left-hand side, to enjoy a wonderful view on the way up the mountain.

Note: Remember to bring your sunglasses when you go up to the snowy mountain. Don’t be like me, forgot to wear glasses, dazzled when taking pictures, my eyes are always blink =))

Around 4:00 pm-5:00pm, my whole family got on a train again to go down to the foot of the mountain and took a boat to Lucerne city. After finishing dinner at Tibits Restaurant, we went back to homestay to rest. The next day we will go to Interlaken and to Lauterbrunnen valley.

Old Town Lucerne from Chapel Bridge

Two Days in Lucerne Itinerary

Lucerne is one of Switzerland’s most popular destinations, and it has many charms to enchant the visitor.

Even with just two days in Lucerne, you can still soak up the beauty of this stunning city.

From the medieval Old Town with its oriel windows and painted frescoes to beautiful old bridges and churches, there is lots of history to discover.

Some of the lesser-known sights are also equally captivating, and the city also has some superb museums to explore.

Whether you’re into art or music or are more interested in why Swiss transport is so efficient, there is a museum to enthrall you. You can even visit the Swiss Chocolate Adventure at the Transport Museum.

[ This post may contain compensated links. Please see my  disclosure policy  for more information. ]

This 2 days in Lucerne itinerary takes in a whistle-stop eTukTuk tour to see the sights before exploring the Jesuit Church, Chapel Bridge and the Old Town in more depth.

Then you can explore the Glacier Garden or Bourbaki Panorama before going to the Swiss Transport Museum .

Day 1 is nicely rounded off by having dinner at Rathaus Brauerei between the Old Town and the river.

lucerne day trip itinerary

On the second day you can choose to take a trip up to Mount Rigi or Mount Pilatus for panoramic views that stretch as far as France and Germany. This involves scenic journeys by boat, cogwheel train and cable car.

You can then take in the ancient Musegg Wall before visiting a Picasso or Wagner museum.

Day 2 ends with schnitzels cooked by your table at the traditional Old Swiss House restaurant.

This itinerary can of course be altered to suit your precise timings and interests, but includes what we consider to be the highlights of Lucerne and the surrounding mountains.

Read on so you can start to plan your perfect two days in Lucerne.

🇨🇭 TIP: Consider purchasing a Tell Pass to cover all your public transport and sightseeing needs. Read more here.

Water Tower and Chapel Bridge in Lucerne

Lucerne Day 1 Itinerary

The first day of this Lucerne two day itinerary involves taking a tour of the city to get your bearings.

You’ll travel by eTukTuk, taking in an overview of the key sights along the way, before wandering by the river to see the Jesuit Church. Then, take a stroll across Chapel Bridge to discover the Old Town.

After a lunch stop, take in the Bourbaki Panorama and/or the Glacier Garden – the latter is located close to the Lion Monument. You can then explore the Swiss Transport Museum before dinner in the evening.

Details for each of these activities are covered below.

eTukTuk tour of Lucerne

Start your Lucerne two-day itinerary by joining a highly rated TukTuk tour. This is an eco-friendly way to get to know Lucerne, and is the ideal way to familiarise yourself with the city. We suggest you kick off your 2 day Lucerne itinerary with a 9am eTukTuk tour.

The tour departs from the Lucerne Culture and Congress Centre (KKL), which is located by the lake, right next to the Lucerne train station.

Your personal, local guide will introduce you to this charming Swiss city with its incredible lake and mountain views, with stops en route for photos and shopping.

The tour lasts between an hour and 90 minutes, and you’ll have time to see the Löwendenkmal (Lion) Monument and grab a glimpse of the Old Town.

> Click here to book your eTukTuk tour of Lucerne

Lucerne's twin towered Jesuit Church

Jesuit Church

When you alight from the eTukTuk, take a walk along the River Reuss towards Lucerne’s striking Jesuit Church. The twin towers with their elegant, pale green onion domes make it simple to see where you’re heading for.

The Baroque style church may seem rather uninspiring from the exterior, but head inside and you’ll find a stunning frescoed ceiling, an abundance of shining white marble and opulent side altars.

The church dates back to 1673, and was Switzerland’s first large Baroque style house of worship.

Chapel Bridge

While you may have caught a brief preview during your eTukTuk tour, taking a more leisurely stroll across Chapel Bridge allows you to see the structure more closely.

Your starting point is the 34 metre-high Water Tower close to the Jesuit Church, which is named for its position rather than the function. It once helped to fortify the city, and has a red octagonal tiled roof.

By the Water Tower is Chapel Bridge, a medieval footbridge that originated in 1333. Sadly, a 1993 fire destroyed much of the bridge and its decorative, 17th century pictorial panels.

Some of these artworks can still be seen, however, beneath the eaves of the bridge.

This historic bridge and the Water Tower – that has in the past been used as a prison, treasury and archive – are not to be missed.

They look particularly attractive with a light dusting of snow in winter, or when the flower boxes are in bloom during spring and summer.

View of Jesuit Church from Chapel Bridge in Lucerne

Old Town

Once you leave Chapel Bridge you’ll end up on pedestrianised Rathausquai which runs by the river.

From here a series of cobbled alleyways and charming squares lead to the centre of Lucerne’s Old Town, which is packed with fascinating boutiques, appealing cafes and attractive restaurants.

Original oriel windows and frescoes are a particular feature of the Old Town, so don’t forget to look up or you could miss out.

Another highlight is Weinmarkt Square, the name of which stems from the fact that wine was once traded here.

The historic homes lining the square are very photogenic, and many now house smart shops and stylish hotels. Formerly many of these were guildhalls, and the intricate facades pay homage to their former status.

If you want to do some shopping while in Switzerland, the Old Town is the perfect place to browse. From local souvenir shops to international brands, you can find them all in this historic part of Lucerne.

On Weggisgasse, the Manor department store is worth stopping at – there is a great value top floor restaurant serving high quality food. This has a pleasant outdoor terrace, giving guests unparalleled views over the city.

On Tuesdays and Saturdays, a fresh produce market is also held in the Old Town.

Buildings with painted facades and oriel windows in Old Town Lucerne

After all this exploring, a lunch break will be most welcome and we recommend stopping at the HEINI cafe close to the main train station to rest and refuel.

To find it, cross the main traffic bridge of Seebrucke to reach the cafe at Bahnhofplatz 3. It’s right opposite the railway station.

HEINI cafe serves various light meals, plus a range of delectable treats such as freshly baked cakes and sweet Swiss pastries.

During the afternoon of your first day in Lucerne you can choose to take in the Bourbaki Panorama, a commemorative mural, or stroll around the natural surroundings of the Glacier Garden. Depending on the weather and timings, you may even like to do both.

Then, you should visit the incredible Swiss Transport Museum.

Dying Lion monument in Lucerne

Bourbaki Panorama

The Bourbaki Museum on Lowenplatz pays testament to 87,000 French soldiers who escaped to Switzerland – and safety – during the winter of 1871. Circular in shape, the mural is 10 metres tall and 112 metres long.

A commentary and sound effects help bring the story to life. The museum also has a restaurant, an art gallery and other exhibits.

Glacier Garden

Located on Denkmalstrasse, the Glacier Garden is a natural phenomenon that was first discovered during the late 19th century. Its formation dates back to the Ice Age.

At the site you can see highly polished glacial rock and over 30 potholes that were formed when ice melted and tumbled onto the rock via waterfalls. You can also see fossils of palm fronds and shellfish that are, incredibly, over 20 million years old.

The Glacier Garden also has an observation tower for views over Lucerne, a mirror maze and interactive exhibits that clearly demonstrate the effects of climate change.

Cable cars on display at the Swiss Transport Museum in Lucerne

Swiss Transport Museum

The Swiss Transport Museum on Lidostrasse is popular with families, and it’s a fascinating place for visitors of all ages. This lakeside museum also offers rides, interactive displays, simulators, a planetarium and an IMAX theatre.

If that – and the chance to learn all about trains, planes, cars and more – isn’t enough, perhaps you’ll be tempted by the fact that the Swiss Chocolate Adventure can also be found here.

It’s easy to spend the whole afternoon or even the entire day at the Swiss Transport Museum if you have the time. The museum is open until 6pm daily, and is the most popular museum in the whole of Switzerland.

Rathaus Brauerei

After a busy day of sightseeing, it’s time to kick back and relax. We recommend having dinner at Rathaus Brauerei, which is located by the river and Chapel Bridge on Rathausquai, on the edge of the Old Town.

This restaurant and brewery serves a range of Swiss specialities, soups, sausage dishes, salads and vegetarian options as well as local beers.

The building was once the Town Hall, and its waterside position makes it a lovely spot for winding down while reflecting on your first day in Lucerne.

Lucerne Day 2 Itinerary

Today’s the day to head out of the city to experience what Switzerland is probably best known for – the mountains. We recommend you choose to visit either Mount Rigi or Mount Pilatus.

Not sure which mountain to visit? Click here to compare Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi .

During the mid-afternoon, you can return to the city to visit a museum – or take a walk along the Old City Walls before dinner at The Old Swiss House restaurant.

Paddle steamer on Lake Lucerne

Once you’ve decided which mountain you want to visit most, it’s time to make your ascent to either Mount Pilatus or Mount Rigi.

We suggest setting off straight after breakfast to ensure you have adequate time at the summit to enjoy the various activities that are available.

Below are your options:

Classic Round Trip to Mount Rigi

The Classic Mount Rigi round trip is an all-inclusive ticket that will take you from the city to the summit of the mountain. It includes travel by boat, cogwheel railway and cable car, so getting there is a major part of the experience.

Tip: If you have a valid Swiss Travel Pass or Tell Pass , the entire journey from Lucerne to Mt. Rigi is fully covered.

The first sector is a relaxing cruise across Lake Lucerne. The pier can be found right next to the train station, and here you will board a paddle steamer or lake cruiser for an hour’s journey across the water to Vitznau.

Once you reach Vitznau, you can take a seat on the charming, historic cogwheel railway for your mountain ascent. This is Europe’s oldest mountain railway, and the 150th anniversary took place in 2021.

Rigibahn at the summit of Mt. Rigi

At the summit at Rigi Kulm, you’ll have free time to explore – though first of all you may wish to marvel at the panoramic views from 1,798 metres above sea level.  It’s easy to see why this peak is known as the ‘Queen of the Mountains’.

When the weather’s clear, you may be able to see all but one of the 26 Swiss cantons, plus 13 lakes and up to 620 alpine peaks. In the far distance, Mont Blanc in France and the Black Forest in Germany may even be visible.

Should you ever have your fill of those views, there is lots more to do once you’re on Mount Rigi. The Rigi Kulm Hotel Restaurant can provide you with refreshments or a meal, or you can explore further via various hiking trails.

If you feel like taking a little exercise, you could take the half hour hike from Rigi Kulm down to Rigi Kaltbad. There you can use the thermal spa or enjoy a meal or snack.

When it’s time to travel back to Lucerne, your classic round trip ticket includes a brief ride on the rack railway to Rigi Kaltbad, which you can then use if you chose not to  hike down here.

At Rigi Kaltbad you’ll then board the cable car for a scenic, 10-minute trip to Weggis before transferring to the boat for the 40-minute return journey to Lucerne.

> Click here to pre-book your Mt. Rigi classic round trip tickets

Golden Round Trip to Mount Pilatus

Like the all-inclusive Mount Rigi option, the Golden Round Trip for Mount Pilatus is a self-guided tour ticket that includes various forms of transport to get you to the summit and back.

Tip: The entire journey from Lucerne to Mt. Pilatus is fully covered for Tell Pass holders. Swiss Travel Pass holders receive free travel on trains, boats and buses and 50% off the cogwheel train and cable car.

To start your excursion, you board a bus at Lucerne bus station for the trip from the city to Kriens, where you can board the cable car bound for the summit.

This scenic journey will take you to the top, from which there are of course sweeping views over the Swiss mountains and lakes.

Hiking is just as popular at Mount Pilatus as it is at Mount Rigi during the summer season. There are about 20 trails to choose from, and the shortest takes around an hour and a half to complete.

Some trails are closed during the colder season.

Dragon Ride cable car at Mt. Pilatus, Switzerland

You may also wish to take the famous Pilatus toboggan run. This operates during summer and is located close to the cable car station. It’s Switzerland’s longest seasonal toboggan run and makes for a thrilling ride through the landscape.

When it’s winter, lots of visitors take part in snow sports. Adrenaline activities like parasailing may also be available, and there is also a rope park and an adventure playground on Mount Pilatus.

If you’d rather simply relax, both the Pilatus-Kulm Hotel and the Hotel Bellevue have good restaurants to dine at while enjoying the unparalleled views.

Once it’s time to head back to Lucerne, you will board the steepest cogwheel railway in the world bound for Alpnachstad.

After the exciting descent, a boat trip across the serene waters of Lake Lucerne will take you back to the city.

After your mid-afternoon return to Lucerne, you can choose whether to walk the Old City Walls or visit one of the city’s fine museums.

Musegg Wall in Lucerne

Old City Walls

If you visit between April and November, a section of the medieval city wall is open to the public. This northern part of the wall is known as Musegg Wall, and comprises an 850-metre section complete with nine towers that are very well preserved.

Four of these ancient towers are open to visitors, and the superb city views make it well worth the effort.

Lucerne museums

As well as the impressive Swiss Transport Museum , Lucerne has several other noteworthy options. Art buffs will love the Picasso and Rosengart museum, while those who prefer music may like to visit the Richard Wagner museum.

Richard Wagner Museum

Located on a street named after the composer, this museum occupies a villa set among parkland in the Tribschen district. Inside you can learn all about his life, including his exile from Germany.

A piano Wagner used while composing can be seen at the museum, as well as other artefacts such as furniture, letters, paintings, photos, and original musical scores.

Also known as the Sammlung Rosengart, the Rosengart Collection can be found on Pilatusstrasse in Lucerne. This museum features works by the likes of Cezanne, Monet, Klee, Matisse and Picasso.

The whole ground floor of the museum is devoted to Picasso, and as well as his works there are also about 200 photos of the artist to see. For Klee fans, there are around 125 drawings and paintings on display.

In total the museum holds more than 300 Impressionist and Classic Modernist works from 23 different 19th and 20th century artists.

Guided tours are available for those who wish to find out more about the artworks and the lives of their creators.

Having dinner at the Old Swiss House restaurant in Lucerne is a must, as they cook the Wiener schnitzel at the table right beside you. The restaurant is also housed in a traditional Swiss building dating from 1859.

Inside, the restaurant is richly decorated with luxurious fabrics, wooden panelling, gilt-framed paintings, antique furnishings and crystal glassware.

It’s the ideal venue for a final night dinner date in Lucerne.

I think it’s very ambitious on a number of days. I’ll comment on the ones I e done before.

This day 2 is not really too reasonable. The drive to Eltz and back is a minimum of 2 hours RT, then add another 2 hours minimum at the castle. That’s 4 hours of your day just for Eltz. It’s another 2 hours RT to Marksburg plus the tour. 8 hours for the 2 castles.

Day 2 - Exploring Bacharach, Rhine Valley, Rheinfels Castle, Marksburg Castle, Burg Elz - Sleeping in Bacharach.

“ Day 10 - Explore Fussen old town (High Castle, St. Mang's Basilica), Schloss Neuschwanstein drive to Salzburg - Sleep in Salzburg”.

The drive to Salzburg is a minimum 3 hours. To see Neuschwanstein you’ll need to book tickets well in advance to have a chance at the tour. This could be a long time also, as it gets packed.

lucerne day trip itinerary

You know, you will need an IDP for this trip?

lucerne day trip itinerary

I wouldn’t know what to do with an afternoon in Liechtenstein, to be honest. Would rather stop in St Gallen.

„Am I missing anything worth seeing, stopping on my route?“ Of course, you do! It’s a lot of ground to cover at a rushed pace no matter what. You can’t see it all. But I’d recommend to take the 2 BB days and add one each to Bacharach and Füssen.

You will need a Swiss motorway vignette. It will cost 40 CHF. It is not necessary to get one for Austria if you exit the Autobahn to Salzburg right after the border. There are no tolls for cars in Germany .
