A Marine Safari in the Philippines

Image of Jacqui Brooks

Emily C, Eleanor and Jacqui are here to help give you the inside track.

Discover the best the Philippines has to offer underwater on this two-and-a-half week marine safari. Meet friendly turtles, thresher sharks and mantas followed by small critters such as mandarin fish, octopus, nudibranchs, seahorses, frogfish and shrimps, spending surface intervals on beautiful beaches and exploring the lush Filipino countryside.

Itinerary at a Glance:

 • Dive the best sites across the Philippines
 • Dive with the extremely rare, elusive thresher shark in Malapascua
 • Meet the world's smallest mammal, the tarsier, on Bohol island
 • Capture macro critters while muck diving in Dumaguete

Why Book with Original Diving?

When to travel, all of the holidays we create are completely tailor-made to you, day 1: international flight to cebu.

Today, after enjoying a glass of champagne in the departure lounge, you will fly to Cebu via Hong Kong. The flight takes around 17 hours, arriving the following morning.

Day 2: Arrival into Cebu and Transfer to Malapascua Island

This morning you will arrive into Cebu airport. When you have cleared customs you will be met and transferred to Malapascua island. The journey will take around three hours by car followed by a 30-minute scenic ride on a local banca (traditional Philippine boat).

After you have checked into your hotel you can organise diving for the coming days around Malapascua island.

Day 3: Threshing Around

It's time for a (very early) rise and shine for a dawn dive with thresher sharks.

You will board the dive boat while it is still dark, jumping into the water just as the sun comes up and descending to a wall, which you sit behind and wait for the sharks to arrive. Watch these amazing sharks glide over your head while small fish pick parasites and dead skin off their sides.

After a surface interval spent picnicking on Malapascua's sandy beaches, head back beneath the waves to discover this tiny island's other claim to fame on a macro dive.

Day 4: Diving at Kalanggaman Island

Today you will dive the marine-rich reefs surrounding Kalanggaman.

The small island of Kalanggaman is home to a pristine beach and long sand bar, and below the waves divers will find walls and shallow reefs covered in soft corals and macro life, including nudibranchs and pygmy seahorses. These reefs are also often visited by turtles - another notch on the dive tick list.

Between dives enjoy a barbecue of freshly caught fish and relax on the perfectly white sand beach.

Day 5: Diving Around Gato Island

Today you will get to tick off Gato island, one of the other jewels that make up Malapascua's diving crown.

Gato island is a marine reserve and sea snake sanctuary located a 45-minute boat ride from Malapascua, boasting everything from macro dives to wall dives. Spend the day exploring the site's pygmy seahorses, lots of nudibranchs and sea snakes and lovely soft corals, as well as turtles, whitetip sharks and mantas.

Close to Gato island lies the Dona Marilyn wreck - a passenger ferry which sank 20 years ago and is now covered in marine life. The wreck sits at a maximum depth of 32 metres and its hull is carpeted in black corals. You will likely come across frogfish, nudibranchs, whitetip reef sharks and rays at this site.

Day 6: Relax, Refresh, Recharge

Relaxation is the order of the day today.

Spend the day alternating between channelling your inner beach bum and snorkelling around the island. Alternatively, knead out any residual knots with a rejuvenating spa treatment and stretch during sunset with a beach front yoga session.

palm tree on beach

Day 7: Onwards to Bohol

Today you will depart Malapascua for the next leg of your adventure in Bohol .

You will be transferred to Bohol island via a short banca ride followed by a four-hour drive south to Cebu and a short flight to Tagbilaran. From Tagbilaran you will be transferred through the beautiful green Filipino countryside to your resort in Anda. Once you have checked in, spend the rest of the day exploring your local surroundings, whether snorkelling straight from the shores of the resort's private beach or venturing through the surrounding tropical forest.

anda

Day 8: Mandarin Fish and More in Anda

Bohol is renowned for its beautiful coral reefs and abundant marine life, which you will spend the day uncovering.

Diving in Anda is a real treat, with calm, warm waters and beautiful reefs covered in all manner of creatures both big and small, including pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, shrimps, octopus and lots of weird and wonderful crabs. Not to forget numerous pelagic fish, reef sharks and heaps of turtles. There are more than 30 dive sites all within a 20-minute boat ride of Amun Ini so you'll be spoilt for choice.

In the evening, just as the sun is going down, descend onto the house reef to watch the mandarin fish courtship dance. This special spectacle involves a male mandarin fish taking centre stage, dancing to the delight of the females as he tries to attract a mate.

barracuda

Day 9: Balicasag island

Today you will explore the treasure troves of Balicasag island.

Perfect for snorkellers and divers alike, Balicasag houses some of the best-known sites around Bohol. Located further afield, this trip will require a full day, but trust us, it's worth it. The island rises up above deep coral-covered walls which are home to an incredible abundance of macro life, reef fish, schooling jacks and tame turtles. Make sure you look out into the blue - you never know what might be passing by.

school jack fish

Day 10: Pamilacan Island

Today you'll dive with the big fish as you uncover the splendours of Pamilacan island.

After a delicious breakfast spread, board the dive boat for a day trip to Pamilacan island. Pamilacan is thought to literally mean 'resting place of mantas', so you can probably guess the island's regular visitors. Along with giant mantas, Bohol is home to more than 11 species of cetacean including bottlenose dolphins, Risso's dolphins, pilot whales, Bryde's and sperm whales - which you'll witness in crystal clear visibility.

manta ray

Day 11: Countryside Cruising

Today you'll keep two feet on dry land as you explore the island.

Bohol is home to some of the Philippines' most iconic sights, from the bulbous Chocolate Hills to tiny wide-eyed tarsiers, the world's smallest mammal. Start your day cruising up the beautiful Loboc river, through emerald forest and trickling waterfalls as you pass the homes of local Boholanos. You will also have a chance to pump up the adrenaline with an exciting zip-line over the river. After the river take an ATV tour around the Chocolate Hills before visiting the tarsier sanctuary, arriving back at the resort just in time for sundowners looking out across expansive ocean panoramas.

boat loboc river

Day 12: Down to Dumaguete

Today you will embark on the third leg of your marine safari as you depart for Dumaguete.

After a leisurely breakfast you will be privately transferred to the airport for your flight to Dumaguete via Cebu. Once you have landed you will be met in arrivals and transferred to the resort which will take around 40 minutes. Once you have settled into your room, spend the rest of the day at leisure. If you're keen to explore, Dumaguete is home to a wealth of natural sites, from thundering waterfalls to glass-topped lakes and bubbling hot springs.

apo island

Days 13-14: Marvellous Muck Diving

If you've never tried muck diving before, this is the place to do it.

The brown volcanic sand might not be much to look at but keep your eyes peeled and you'll see it's home to all sorts of weird and wonderful critters. There are a multitude of fantastic muck diving sites that line the Dauin coastline, where you can spot everything from frogfish and leaf fish to a multitude of octopus (blue ring, mimic, wunderpus, algae, mototi and coconut), as well as nudibranchs in all colours and species.

crab muck

Day 15: Diving at Apo Island

Once you've had your fill of muck diving close to the coast, it's time to head out to nearby Apo island for your coral fix.

Just a 30-minute banca ride away, Apo island is a community-organised fish sanctuary bursting at the seams with marine life. The coral is in superb condition with lots of hard and soft corals and the island is particularly known for its friendly turtles - in fact there are so many green and hawksbill turtles it's easy to lose count!

coral garden apoisland

Day 16: A Final Day in Paradise

Spend your last day making the most of this paradise.

While you can't dive, you can still get your watery fix on a snorkelling adventure either straight from the shores of the resort or on a day trip to islands further afield (insider tip: look out for dolphins playing in your boat's wake). Landlubbers can visit the local mountain town of Valencia, stopping at various waterfalls and hot springs along the way.

soft coral

Day 17: Journey Back Home

Sadly it is the end of your journey across the Philippines. You will be transferred to the airport in good time for your flight to Cebu. Once in Cebu you will board your international flight back to the UK, which will most likely go via Hong Kong or Singapore, arriving the next morning.

Visayas Dive Safari: Cebu, Negros and Bohol

Multiday diving tour. Dive in seven world-class diving destinations: Malapascua, Moalboal, Pescador Island, Dauin, Apo Island, Panglao and Balicasag Island. See the richness and variety of the Philippines' islands, reefs and marine life.

The Philippines is in Earth's Coral Triangle, the area that includes the waters of Malaysia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea that is the center of our planet's marine biodiversity and species density. Cebu, Negros and Bohol in turn, can be said to form the Philippines' diving triangle – having the highest density of excellent diving destinations in the country. The amount and variety of diving in this relatively small area simply cannot be beat: Malapascua is home to thresher sharks and venue for the nightly mating ritual of mandarin fish; Pescador Island has giant clouds of sardines and dramatic wall formations; Dauin, with its seemingly barren sand bottom that is actually full of strange and wonderful creatures, is said to be best muck destination in Asia; Apo Island, visible from Dauin, has coral gardens that cover every inch of the sea floor with vibrant color.

This is the most comprehensive Philippine dive trip that you can do in 9 days. It is not a live aboard so you can enjoy beaches, local cuisine and other land attractions when you're not diving.

 • Tubbataha Liveaboard Diving

Tubbataha National Park is a protected marine area and bird sanctuary in the Sulu Sea. It’s by far the best place for scuba diving in the Philippines , thanks to its large amount of healthy and rich coral reef, and the overall abundance of marine life. In Tubbataha alone you can find 360 species of corals, which is about half of the species in the world. Also, no less than 600 species of fish, 13 species of whales and dolphins, 11 species of sharks, and green and hawksbill sea turtles are all to be found there.

Due to the distance from the mainland and the 10 hours travel time, diving in Tubbataha Reef is only possible as a liveaboard safari trip. The trips last between 6-7 days , and boats are allowed from the last two weeks of March to the first two weeks of June. If you’re planning on diving in the Philippines during these three months, you should seriously consider this tour. Book in advance and secure yourself a spot in this once in a life time liveaboard experience.

Please have a look at this link to get in touch with any of the dive operators. http://tubbatahareefs.org/ dive-operators/

www.atlantishotel.com

tubbatahareefs.org

Tubbataha is composed of two atolls (the only real atolls in the Philippines) and one reef. It lies in the center of the Coral Triangle, which has at least 70% of the world’s corals and 40% of the world’s fish, even though it’s only 2% of the world’s oceans, and it plays a massive role in marine biodiversity conservation in the whole world. The diving conditions are also extremely good, with a visibility of 30-45 meters.

Tubbataha Diving Quick Facts

 • Perfect for : Extreme sports, divers enthusiasts.
 • Diving season : Diving in Tubbataha is only allowed from March to June.
 • Liveaboard package includes : Puerto Princesa transfers, taxes and reservation fees, all meals, coffee and tea, dives.
 • Liveaboard package excludes : Domestic airfare, scuba gear, Nintrox.
 • Starting point : Puerto Princesa City.
 • Duration : 6-7 days.

What to do?

For many years, the isolation of Tubbataha served as its protection, however due to the popularization of motorized boats among local fishermen during the 80's, the reefs and marine life suffer due to the destructive fishing techniques. Shortly after the reef was declared a national marine park, in response to strong campaigns. Studies show that it's now more resilient to climate change than other reefs in the world, due to being remote, protected and unfrequented.

Tubbataha completely recovered from this short violent period and is now one of the best diving sites in the world, and because of its importance it was declare a UNESCO World heritage site in 1993. During the scuba safari you'll dive in the south and north atolls and the Jessie Beazley Reef. Meaning, you'll end the diving trip after a comprehensive exploration of all its dive sites.

tubbataha109

Luxury Liveaboard Safaris

Our high-end trips usually last 6 nights and 7 days , but a transitional trip (the first and last trip of the season where the boat sails to and from Apo Reef) is one night longer. All rooms are air conditioned and hypoallergenic, and the trip is full board including all meals, coffee tea and water. Alcoholic drink and soft drinks can be bought on board. You'll do 4 dives a day including a night dive.

The travel to and from Puerto Princesa, the starting point, is done overnight so on your first day you can already start your trip with a morning dive. The boat also returns early in the morning which allows you to catch a flight on the same day. However, if you did a night dive on your last night, it's better to stay another night in Puerto Princesa. It allows you to wait 24 hours between your last dive and next flight, as it can cause a medical risk. We will include it in you package, and can even book you a tour to the underground river on the day of arrival back in Puerto Princesa.

Tubbahata Budget Liveaboard Scuba Diving Tour

As we said before, scuba diving in Tubbataha reef isn't only for the rich. You can enjoy a great liveaboard trip to the reef in a more modest vessel and save a lot of money for that. Our budget Tubbahata safaris are 5 nights and 6 days. Being a day short also make it less expensive and is a perfect amount of time to explore all the dive sites.

The itinerary of the budget tour is very similar to the high end one. It has 4-5 dives a day, arrives in Tubbataha early in the morning for a full diving day, and also arrives to Puerto Princesa early in the morning, which allows to take a flight to your next destination, as well as going to the underground river on the same day. However because the boat is slower, it leaves Puerto Princesa in the afternoon, and leaves Tubbataha on 15:30 so it will make it on time back.

The budget safari trips are also a lot more intimate for the boat is smaller. It means that there are less people on board (up to 11 not including the crew), but also the communal areas are smaller. The accommodation is of 4 berth dorms, so you get a lot less privacy. M/Y Sakura is a trimaran, meaning it's very stable, which is really good for people who suffer from sea sickness.

Unlike the M/Y Stella Maris, this boat has only one accommodation category, and therefore only one rate. The Budget Tubbataha Liveaboard trip cost 1365 USD including the environmental fees. You won't find any Tubbataha Safari for this rate anywhere else.

*Gear is excluded and can be rented for an additional price.

How does a liveaboard diving trip in Tubbataha fit into my schedule?

A diving safari is for people who're really into diving. However you don't have to be an extremely experienced diver or a professional. You must have a basic scuba diving certification, and this alone allows you to join the trip. Having an advanced certification prior to the safari will allow you to go deeper and explore more of the reef's dive sites. If you consider getting an advanced certification earlier on your vacation we can find the best dive centers for you do to so and arrange it in your package.

Tubbataha Reef Liveaboard can be a standalone item and the main focus of your vacation. Inquire now and we'll create a package that includes the international and domestic flights, as well as accommodation in Manila/Cebu and Puerto Princesa. You can also include Tubbataha as a part of your trip, and we'll build your itinerary accordingly.

There's something to suit all tastes: secluded and forgotten islands in the middle of the ocean, stunning and intimate lagoons found in the flooded craters of ancient volcanoes, or the spectacular beaches of Visayas.

The Philippines sits like a gatekeeper to the vast Pacific Ocean at the edge of Asia. Perhaps surprising to some, and unusual for the region, the principal religion is Catholicism; a legacy of 350 years of Spanish rule in the area. Almost immediately after the Spaniards, the Americans arrived and put their own culture stamp on the country — mainly fast food and shopping malls! Thankfully, the locals still have their own unique identity and will proudly state they are simply Filipino!

Scuba Diving in Moalboal

Swim with the giants, hang with the turtles, with millions of sardines.

Moalboal is a former fishing village on the south west coast of Cebu in the Philippines. We are an easy scenic ride from Cebu (Mactan) international airport, which is approximately 90 kilometers away. Over the years Moalboal has become a haven for snorkellers, scuba divers and lovers of the ocean. With lots of choices for accommodation, food and entertainment this is the perfect stage for your vacation by the sea. The main attraction is the diving, Moalboal is sandwiched between several islands, water temperatures that range from 26 to 28 degrees celsius, great visibility, incredibly diverse marine life, and some of the easiest access dive sites in the world.

Our Dive Sites

Moalboal offers some of the easiest to access dive sites in the world, just a few meters swim from shore puts you over a near-vertical wall that stretches the length of the peninsular. From depths of three meters to sixty meters, most of these dives sites can be accessed safely by complete beginners, through to seasoned technical divers. Moalboal gained international recognition for its abundance of sea turtles, visiting whale sharks, and more recently the sardine ball that has made Panagsama home. Macro lovers will also be spoiled here, the wall is home to an incredible variety of marine life. We visit favorites like Pescador Island, the Sardine ball and the Marine Sanctuaries every day, for the more experienced diver we have some offshore dive sites such as Sunken Island.

If you prefer to get away from it all you can choose Cebu Fun Divers inside the stunning Cebu Seaview Dive Resort located in South Panagsama. Both are well equipped and staffed to provide you with a great diving experience.

If you would like to read a bit more about these locations and see some useful information on how to plan your journey here and time with us please have a look here .

Easy Diving and Beach Resort is a Swiss-owned diving operation in The Philippines. 3 operating locations with 3 safari boats offer the best of the Visayas. Founded in 2001, Easy Diving and Beach Resort was the beginning of our success story in Sipalay, Negros Occidental. A couple of years later we started diving safaris with one boat. Due to a huge demand for more diving destinations from our customers, new dive shops have been developed in the southern part of Negros.

Due to the high demand for safaris, our safari fleet has increased to 3 boats and Safaris run from October to May. The Safaris cover all the major sites in the Visayas. They also cover the Cagayan archipelago, which belongs to the Tubbataha National Park. This Safari runs from March to May. All our Safaris operate on a weekly basis.

O ur new diveshop in Coron has been open since 2018 . Coron, which is part of the Calamanias archipelago, is located on the north of Palawan Island and is famous for its wreck diving. The landscape of Coron is sculpted by rocks and limestone formations, but there are also many nearby islands with romantic beaches and bays. Boat trips to these beautiful Islets can be arranged at your requests.

9 Japanese warships were sunk by US-American airplanes in WWII and have become great Wreckdiving sites. The depth ranges from 6 m to 40 m (18 ft to 120 ft) and diving is possible the whole year-round. Moreover, we offer a day-trip of snorkeling with dugongs on the neighboring island Busuanga. You can also join Dive Safaris to the famous Apo Reef and see a lot of interesting pelagic fishes.

The dive shop and hotels in Coron are 25 minutes away by car from the Coron airport. Daily flights to Coron are available from Manila and Cebu. An alternative is to arrive with an overnight car ferry from Manila.

1. TUBBATAHA REEFS, PALAWAN

Highest biodiversity

Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Palawan, in the heart of the Sulu Sea. Many would agree that Tubbataha is the best diving spot in the Philippines, and one of the most biodiverse diving spots on earth.

Pristine coral reefs, the richest marine biodiversity in the country, and pelagic action. Big or small, Tubbataha has them all.

Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park is the epicenter of biodiversity of the Philippines

Tubbataha is home to no less than 600 species of fish, 360 species of corals (about 50% of the coral species in the world), 11 species of sharks (including tiger sharks, whale sharks, and whitetips), 13 species of dolphins, and whales, nesting hawksbill and green sea turtles. You can also see manta rays, schools of barracuda and tuna, and smaller marine life like nudibranchs, ornate ghost pipefish, seahorses, and frogfish.

"Tubbataha boasts incredible biodiversity, pristine coral reefs and, and a chance to dive with large marine animals . The water temps are warm and visibility is often excellent, making it perfect for great photo ops ." - Bluewater Travel Advisor & Trip Leader Katie Yonker .

Diving with whale shark in Tubbataha, Philippines

Amos Rock is often cited as the best dive site in Tubbataha, boasting colorful soft corals, massive schools of fish, large reef sharks and a gorgonian-covered wall. Washing Machine in the North Atoll is known for some of the best visibility within the marine park and is home to grey reef sharks and plenty of tropical reef fish. You might even see a whale shark or two if you're lucky! Black Rock in the South Atoll is a popular dive spot for whitetip sharks, rays and schools of grouper and giant trevally.

Learn more on Tubbataha diving

Where to Stay

Tubbataha can only be accessed via a liveaboard.

A week-long liveaboard trip is the norm in Tubbataha, but you can find longer "transition" trips offered in combination with other areas in the Philippines, including Dauin, Apo Island and Cabilao. The diving season of Tubbataha Reefs lasts only from February/March to June when the sea conditions are at the calmest and the weather is hot and dry. Find out why we love diving Tubbataha in June . Due to the short diving season liveaboard trips in Tubbataha fill up early, so planning your trip in advance would be a great idea.

There are at least a dozen of liveaboards to choose from in Tubbataha.

Nirvana is a brand-new 131-foot (40-meter) luxury liveaboard in the Philippines, catering up to 22 divers in 11 spacious cabins. You'll find an extensive range of great amenities aboard, including a spacious sun deck with a jacuzzi, and an impressive 'Al-Fresco' Bar!

Philippine Siren is a great option in Tubbataha. This beautiful 131-foot (40-meter) Phinisi-style yacht features spacious and modern cabins, plenty of space on the main deck for divers and underwater photographers, and exceptional chef-prepared meals.

View all liveaboards in Tubbataha

HOW TO GET THere

To get to Tubbataha, you have to fly into Manila (MNL) and take a domestic flight to Puerto Princessa (PPR) which takes a little over an hour. A typical liveaboard trip to Tubbataha would usually depart from Puerto Princessa. The navigation takes around 10 hours.

Diving Conditions

Visibility: 32 to 114 feet (10-35m depending on the tides)

Non-Diving Activities: Tubbataha is suitable for snorkelers.

Required Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced recommended. Strong currents might be present at some of the sites.

2. Anilao, Batangas

Best muck diving in the philippines.

Only a 2-hour drive away from Manila lies Anilao , one of the world's best macro photography destinations . Boasting a wide array of rare critters, it's literally a heaven-on-earth for muck diving, blackwater diving, and macro photography.

"Anilao offers some of the best diving anywhere in the world for those looking to explore the macro world. The diversity, density, and quality of subjects is simply beyond belief. Offering dives on beautiful and healthy coral sites, to barren sand flats, Anilao has it all. Being so close to Manila, it is also one of the most easily accessible dive destinations, which is a major benefit for those of us who travel from the US and Europe." - Photo Pro & Bluewater Trip Leader Erik Lukas

The long list of small-scale sea life and critters that you can find in Anilao include nudibranchs, frogfish, seahorses, cuttlefish, pipefish, and...so much more. But don't leave your wide-angle lens at home. Beautiful coral reefs, turtles, huge schools of jacks, jellyfish, and the occasional reef sharks await in Anilao.

Prepare your critter list with this comprehensive guide on muck diving .

Hairy frogfish seen during a dive in Anilao

Hairy frogfish is one of the many species of frogfish that you'll find while diving in Anilao, especially at Secret Bay!

Secret Bay, also known as Manit Muck, is probably the best muck dive site in Anilao. Here, you can find mimic octopus, wonderpus, pipefish, frogfish, and the list goes on. Don't forget to dive Manit at night to see this wonderful site come to life.

Bobbit worm in Anilao

Bobbit worm and stargazer, photographed by Bluewater owner Scott Gietler.

The Pier , along with Secret Bay, is among the highly requested dive sites during our annual macro photography workshops in Anilao. You can find the much-sought-after bobbit worms and stargazers ! Twin Rocks is great for macro and wide-angle alike, with pristine soft corals, schooling jacks, and plenty of small fish. Beatrice is a great wide-angle site with colorful corals teeming with anthias and other reef fish.

The diving season in Anilao is year-round, but we especially love Anilao for diving in December and the early spring.

Learn more on Anilao diving and read about our last trip there from our Anilao Dive Report .

Diving in Anilao is predominantly land-based. There are plenty of great dive resorts in Anilao.

Here at Bluewater Photo & Travel, we have been running macro photography workshops at Crystal Blue Resort in Anilao for the past 10 years. Located in Bagalangit, the heart of Anilao, the resort has everything an avid diver and underwater photographer needs--comfortable rooms, easy access to the dive sites, knowledgeable dive guides, and top-notch photography amenities.

Aiyanar Beach & Dive Resort in Anilao is a great 4-star dive resort, featuring an infinity pool, spacious and stylish rooms, a clubhouse, well-equipped dive center, and photography facilities, and more!

See our exclusive deals in Anilao

Interested in macro photography? Join our photo workshops at Crystal Blue Resort in Spring 2024. Daily workshops provided at no extra cost!

is there a liveaboard in Anilao?

Yes and no. You can find a few liveaboard trips sailing from or to Anilao in combination with other regions in the Philippines, but these trips usually don't offer any scuba diving in Anilao itself. However, these trips are great options for those looking to live longer in the Philippines.

Solitude One is a majestic 170-foot (52-meter) liveaboard vessel, which offers Anilao to Anilao trips in the summer months . These week-long trips take you to various great dive regions in the Philippines, notably the superb Verde Island, Romblon--another great place to visit for macro photography aficionados--and Ticao which offers a high chance to see manta rays. There's even a variation that takes you to dive with thresher sharks in Malapascua .

HOW TO GET TO ANILAO

Anilao is one of the easiest Philippines scuba diving destinations to get to. Fly into Manila (MNL) and Anilao is only a 2-3 hour ride from the Manila airport. Most resorts offer return transfers, sometimes for free, so getting there and back is really a breeze. See how to get to the Philippines .

DIVING CONDITIONS

Wetsuit: 3mm full wetsuit with booties

Visibility: Avg. 40 to 50ft (10-15m)

Non-diving activities: Snorkeling and kayaking

Required Diving Skill Level: Anilao is beginner-friendly since most of the sites are not deep and strong currents are rarely present.

3. DAUIN, DUMAGUETE

Best all-in-one luxury dive vacation spot in the philippines.

Situated on Negros Island lies another world-class diving destination for macro photography, Dauin. Most of the best dive sites are located along the coastline of Dauin, which is 20 minutes away from the City of Dumaguete itself.

The Dumaguete area is best known for its excellent muck diving , great coral reefs nearby, and its assortment of luxurious beachfront dive resorts which are relatively affordable compared to other diving destinations in the world. Most Dumaguete dive resorts also offer a day trip to Oslob where you can swim and snorkel up-close with whale sharks.

"What makes the diving in Dumaguete really special is that many of the dive sites have great coral reefs filled with fish, right alongside muck sites. This means that a hard-core macro photographer diving with family or friends can go to the same dive site together, and have different dive guides for different underwater experiences." - Scott Gietler

Best wreck diving in the philippines.

Home to THE BEST wreck dives in the Philippines , Coron Bay is also known for its jaw-droppingly beautiful limestone cliffs and crystalline lagoons. The combination of great wrecks and picturesque landscapes is what puts Coron on this list. Read more about the world's best wreck dives .

The historical World War II shipwrecks of Coron, Palawan are really unique. Coron Bay used to be the harbor for World War II Japanese warships. 11 of these ships were sunk during an air attack in September 1944. Today the wrecks of Coron serve as reef systems, supporting a number of marine life. Some of the residents of these wrecks include scorpionfish, nudibranchs, cuttlefish, and octopuses. You’ll even see the occasional reef shark or stingray, hovering near the wrecks.

Coron Bay Wreck

The Okikawa Maru is the largest shipwreck in Coron . This 525-foot wreck is very beginner-friendly, with the top sitting at just 32 feet (10 meters) below the surface. Tangat Gunboat is another popular wreck site. This submarine hunter is very shallow and can be enjoyed by beginner and advanced divers alike.

El Nido is another popular dive location on Palawan. Although the diving isn't considered as good as Coron, it has lots of turtles. El Nido also has spectacular beaches and amazing island hopping that makes it worth a visit if you are diving Palawan.

where to stay

Coron Bay hosts a wide range of land-based dive operators for all kinds of budgets. Please note that Coron Bay is a very touristic area compared to most of the places on this list. If you want to stay away from the crowds, d iving Coron via a liveaboard is highly recommended. It also allows you to explore more sites in a short period of time.

Liveaboards would often combine the wrecks of Coron with Mindoro Strait's Apo Reef in their itineraries. Often referred to as "little Tubbataha", Apo Reef Natural Park is a UNESCO heritage site candidate , boasting colorful walls, plenty of sharks, turtles, bumphead parrotfish, and huge schools of snappers and tuna. Manta and eagle rays, as well as other pelagic species, are also commonly seen around the area.

9. more awesome places to dive in the Philippines

In case you want more....

Boracay in Aklan is known for its world-class for white-powder beaches and is home to interesting macro life, and mola molas are occasionally seen here although the success rate is not as great as in Nusa Penida in Bali , Indonesia.

1-hour flight away from Manila lies Donsol, an up-and-coming scuba diving destination where manta rays are found feeding and being cleaned at Manta Bowl. Travelers also flock into this area from all over the country for a chance to snorkel with whale sharks, free from feeding, from November through June.

Cabilao Island on the west side of Bohol features interesting walls and coral gardens, with great macro photography opportunities. Cabilao is often included in liveaboard trips visiting the Visayas.

Leyte is THE hidden gem of the Philippines scuba diving scene, with fantastic marine biodiversity, comparable to other South East Asia and Philippines diving hotspots in, i.e. Tubbataha Reef and Alor in Indonesia. Think Dauin (awesome macro) and Apo Island (wide-angle and bigger animals) combined.

Is there any other place that should be on this list? Let us know your thoughts !

BEST TIME TO DIVE in the Philippines

November to May is the dry season in the Philippines, offering little to no rain and nice hot and humid weather. This period of time is often considered as the best time to dive in the Philippines and is the most popular time to visit the country. Regardless, the diving season in the Philippines runs year-round, keeping in mind that some of the areas and certain marine life sightings are either seasonal or weather dependent, this includes Tubbataha which can only be dived around the months of March to June.

During the wet season which typically runs from May to October , most of the dive sites remain great, the waters are warmer, and you have the advantage of having fewer divers around in most places. Typhoons may occur during the wet season, particularly around July to September. However, it's a rare occasion and most of the dive areas are not affected . Don't let it keep you from visiting the Philippines in the summer months!

If you plan to visit the Philippines in the summer, it wouldn't hurt to double-check the weather report and ask your travel advisor or dive operator for the latest updates on weather and diving conditions. Don't forget to bring a light jacket and/or raincoat to protect you in case of rain.

Insider Tip: Many people shy away from diving the Philippines in the summer due to typhoon/rain scare. The truth is, rain is highly unpredictable in tropical countries and you'll be surprised how sunny it could get on certain days during this "rainy" season. Plus, there are fewer divers visiting around these months, so many of the popular dive sites will be less busy.

The water temperatures throughout the country hover at 79-88˚F (24-31˚C) year-round a 3-5mm full wetsuit would suffice. The waters get colder at the beginning of the year, from January to March, during the dry "winter" season, and are at the warmest in the middle of the year.

Bringing an additional hoodie and shark skin during colder months is always a good idea, especially if you're going to an area where thermoclines might occur.

Where to go scuba diving in Bohol

Panglao island.

Location : 22 kilometers (13 miles) southwest of Tagbilaran City Level : All levels of certification Max Depth : 30 meters (100 feet)

Panglao Island is the jump-off point for nearby diving destinations in Bohol, and is home to 15 dive sites itself. On the western coast of Panglao, you can dive at Doljo Point . Popular for wall diving, Doljo point has 2 vertical ledges sitting on top of each other. The first wall is ideal for newbies with entry point at a coral garden that leads to a limestone ledge spanning 20 meters (60 feet) deep. The second wall is ideal for advanced divers who want to follow a vertical wall that drops off beyond 30 meters (100 feet) deep. You might get lucky and see schools of snappers, fusiliers and damselfish.

If you wish to go night diving and explore a site that is dominated by a single fish species, then go to the southern shores of Panglao in a place called the Garden of the Eels . You will start diving by following a steep slope that ends in a sandy seafloor filled with hundreds of partially protruding garden eels. Alona House Reef is another popular site in Panglao where you can go reef diving following a sloped limestone wall that starts at 5 meters (15 feet) deep and goes all the way down to 25 meters (80 feet).

Balicasag Island

Location : 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) southwest of Panglao Island Level : All levels of certification Max Depth : 30 meters (100 feet)

Balicasag Island has been declared a marine sanctuary, where marine life has flourished and boats are regulated.

One of the most popular site in Balicasag island is Black Forest . Located on the eastern coast, diving in Black Forest allows you to see a healthy population of black corals spread throughout its reef slope and spans all the way down to 40 meters (130 feet). The north coast of Balicasag Island houses 2 popular sites: Diver’s Haven and Royal Garden . These sites are known for coral gardens and massive school of jacks and barracudas. For marine reptile interaction, venture to aptly named Turtle Point where you can go diving with sea turtles in close proximity.

Cabilao Island

Location : 54 kilometers (33 miles) north of Panglao Island Level : All levels of certification Max Depth : 30 meters (100 feet)

An hour boat ride away from Panglao Island is Cabilao Island. This is an incredible spot where you can go wall diving along a pristine reef loaded with big fish like barracudas, tunas and trevallies. This shark-tooth shaped island is dotted with over 10 dive sites all featuring a vertical ledge filled with corals, sponges, sea fans and giant clams. Some of the popular dive sites in Cabilao Island are the reef plateau of View Point , the gorgonian beds of the Fallen Tree , the current-driven walls of Looc , the large overhang of Cambaquiz and the massive table top corals of 3 Coco .

Note : the best time to go diving in Cabilao island is from December to June where massive school of hammerhead sharks are known to pass by the island either just after sunrise or before sunset!

Pamilacan Island

Location : 17 kilometers (10 miles) southeast of Panglao island Level : All levels of certification Max Depth : 20 meters (60 feet)

Being a marine sanctuary, the tiny island of Pamilacan is a refuge to all sorts of marine life, from the smallest nudibranchs to the biggest whales and dolphins. Aside from diving with small pelagics like tunas, barracudas and jacks, Pamilacan is known for interacting with the largest of the ray species: the giant manta rays .

Known for its mild to moderate water current, you will usually go drift diving in Pamilacan Island where you can spot manta rays swimming against the current with their mouths wide open. Don’t worry–these gentle giants passively feeding by allowing water to freely flow inside their mouth, filtering microorganisms as food.

FAQs about scuba diving in Bohol

Bohol is home to over 30 different scuba diving sites. As a start, head to Panglao Island which is one of the main scuba diving hubs of Bohol and has at least 15 dive sites as its house reef!

Expect to pay around $20-40 USD per scuba dive in Bohol, with a few extra dollars to tip your dive guide. Most dive centers in Bohol offer package deals, meaning you’ll pay less per dive the more dives you purchase.

At the end of your scuba dive trip to Bohol, you might want to bring home some goodies for family and friends. We recommend Kalamay , a sweet and sticky delicacy made from coconut milk, brown sugar and grounded glutinous rice packed in an empty coconut shell. Or, bring home Peanut Kisses which are made from grounded highland legumes mixed with sugar and molded like a small chocolate hill. Pack extra–they’re too tempting not to dine on yourself!
