EDEN CRUISE REVIEWS

Cruise rating: 3.1 /5 - 4 customer reviews

Hello Tamara, I wanted to send you an email now that we are back from our holiday in Ecuador. We had a great time on the Eden boat travelling around the Galápagos. The boat was spacious and comfortable. We were very happy with our cabin (#9). Luis Andrada the guide was great, very enthusiastic and knowledgable. All the boat crew were brilliant. They were always in a cheerful mood, eager to help if you had any query. We especially enjoyed the food that chef Walter produced for each meal. We haven't travelled on a small boat before so weren't sure how the food would be, what could be provided on a small boat. But the chef continued to amaze us all week. Every meal was delicious and well thought out. There was also plenty of food for everyone and a good variety of items with plenty of vegetables. The daily schedule, timings and trips were well planned out, organised, crew knew how to do everything so our time was maximised. Thank you for all your help last year in helping us find a boat and booking the Eden. We had a great time around the Galápagos and around the rest of Ecuador. Diana Frattali-Moreno December 2018 3.1
Hola Veronica. We were in Mexico until February 21 and I was unable to reply. Then I forgot when we arrived home! The trip to and around the Galapagos was amazing and everything we expected and more. Our naturalist, Ruben, was an excellent guide and the crew were all so kind and helpful. We liked that we were kept busy everyday with a variety of activities. The food was great and we were amazed at what the cook produced in the tiny galley. Alcohol was expensive - very expensive and lacked choice. The only real complaint was the coffee - quite undrinkable. Instant would have been much better - but that is just my opinion as I am very particular about my coffee. I would recommend that passengers take some of their own and/or some decent packets of tea. We have been recommending the 1 week trip to everyone, the week is long enough but not too long and with just the right amount of activity and variety. Thanks Sheila Anderson January 2018 3.1
Hello again Lilian! We want to thank for joining us the best trip in our lives. We are so pleased that everything worked so well logistically. You have always returned quickly with answer on all our questions. We appreciate it a lot. The boat Eden was a fantastic choice. Friendly crew. Good food.Great excurcions with a good guide. We thanks so much a lot. Sincerely Ulla and Per Leif and Anette Ulla Blomqvist Haggblad January 2017 3.1
Dear Veronica, I am back after a magnificent trip to Galapagos. Your organization, our guide Eduardo, and the crew of Eden were all outstanding. Also the program of visits was excellent. There is nothing I could suggest you should improve. Galapagos is a unique experience worth a lot. Thank you indeed! Ioannis Filis July 2012 3.1

we were pleasantly surprised with the ship. The pictures do not do it justice. There were plenty of areas to sit out on the deck (in privacy or with a group) to enjoy the view if the islands. Every morning each cabin was thoroughly cleaned (including the washroom). The only negative comment I have is the cabins were quite cool at night. When we asked the crew to turn up the temperature it was ok, however every day the temperature seemed to revert back to the original. As long as you remember to ask the crew to turn up the temp each night you should be fine.

My wife and I really enjoyed the food. Each meal felt home made and a treat. My wife and I are vegetarian. The cook did a fantastic job catering to our dietary needs. we felt a little spoiled after 8 days of great food!

The tour of the islands was well done. We got to see most of the things we hoped for. Snorkelling was probably the best I've done. We were lucky enough to see many sharks, sea lions, marine iguanas and even mating tortoises all while snorkelling. One thing that was slightly lacking was some of the history of the islands, information on evolution of various species and explanations on what makes the galapagos so unique. It's all stuff you can find online but I was hoping to get a little more from the tour guide.

if travelling during the cooler months, and you have a wet suit you should bring it, we travelled during December and the water was fairly cool. Renting a wetsuit on board costed $40 per person.

- most of the guests on the boat were confused on tipping etiquite. I would suggest doing some research on tipping prior to the trip. Galápagos Islands.com would probably be a good source.

Overall we had a great experience and would recommend the Eden.

Thank you for this review! My fiance and I are considering the Eden for our honeymoon in a few months, and this sounds exactly what we are looking for. And we're also vegetarians, so it's nice to hear they were happy to accommodate that. Did you do the Eastern or Western itinerary? We're leaning towards the Eastern for the waved albatross on Espanola, but are still working out the details.

This post has been removed at the author's request.

Oops, posted twice. Can you tell I'm new here?!

Can you advise me on a couple of things?

- is snorkeling equipment available and of good quality or should we bring our own?

- we've been advised to tip $150 per person, so $300 for the two of us - does this sound about right?

- any other pieces of advice you'd give?

Me again! Can you tell me what plugs are on the boat? I'm thinking about charging batteries for cameras etc.

Much appreciated!

This post was determined to be inappropriate by the Tripadvisor community and has been removed.

Hi there, we had the western itinerary and were really happy with all that we saw. To be honest based on what I've read and heard I don't think you can go wrong with either itinerary.

The snorkelling gear was in pretty good shape. So I wouldn't bother bringing your own unless you have extra space in your luggage. The outlets are the same as those in North America.

As for tips, the guide recommended that it be 10% of the cost of the trip. However there are other guidelines (if you google it) that use different standards which would result in a lower amount. For the guests on our ship we averaged 170 per couple.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for all the advice, especially about the tipping - I would hate to insult the crew and guides by getting it wrong. I'm now getting rediculoudly excited about going!

' class=

May I ask a question about getting on\off shore please.

I am a little mobility challenged from a knee operation that went wrong and cannot trust the knee to hold me if I need to step onto it quickly and awkwardly which means taking special care at times and on rough areas I tend to use a walking stick to assist with stability. I'm also no where near as agile as I used to be. I've looked at the websites and various landings are described with a range of wet or dry and easy, moderate or moderately difficult but it is very hard to actually judge what criteria they have used and no one comments on how they get back into the boat afterwards - ie fall in or does it come inshore further etc.

I'd be grateful if someone could explain a little further or even link to photos taken at various sites.

The other question was that one itinerary listed a 2 hour dingy trip to the site. While I've emailed there has been no response and I'd like to know if this is two hours each way. The dingy photo which accompanied it had the visitors sitting on the side of the boat which looked like what we call a 'rubber ducky' or surf lifesaving irb and not a dingy which is what we call a small boat with internal seating.

Many thanks.

Most Popular Galapagos Islands Trips & Tours

The great weather of the Galapagos Islands makes them a fantastic destination for travel year-round. Every month of the year is a good time to enjoy a tour of the region. The Galapagos Islands have a subtropical climate that is almost completely determined by sea currents. Although most believe the Galapagos to be a very hot destination, the cool water currents in the area keep the climate more temperate year-round. The islands’ equatorial location ensures twelve hours of sunlight daily, all year long. The mild variations in weather from month to month result in an overall climate of warm days, cool nights and low humidity. Anytime is a great time to travel to the Galapagos; while visiting one can expect to see plenty of sunshine, blue skies and a possible chance of light rain. There are two seasons in the Galapagos:

  • The hot or rainy season arrives with the coming of the warm Panama current. The warmest months are December through June with temperatures ranging from 72-90°F (22-32°C), with February and March being the hottest and sunniest. The sea is at its warmest (in the 70°F range) and tends to be calmer during this time. Although the islands receive slightly more rainfall during these months, most of the lower elevations remain quite arid. Expect blue skies and sunshine and with a chance of short afternoon showers.
  • July through November is the dry or garua season, which begins with the arrival of cold ocean currents. One can expect cooler temperatures and a light mist in the morning during these months. The skies are also a bit cloudier and air temperatures a bit cooler, in the range of 60-75°F (15-24°C). The garua is a mist that forms in the highlands, providing moisture and usually tapering off by midday, leaving skies slightly overcast or sunny for the afternoon. The air temperature can be slightly lower, but the Equator is still a warm place to visit. During this time of year a cold ocean current from the south, called the Antarctic Humboldt current, causes the water temperature to drop slightly, ranging from 60°F- 72°F (15-22°C).

Within both seasons, there are other variants, like altitude, that affect the weather. The lowest point of elevation is sea level and the highest is Wolf Volcano, Isabela Island (5,600ft or 1,710m). There are seven vegetation zones ranging from arid coastal zones to evergreen cloud forests to treeless shrubless pampa zones, all of which are affected by moisture levels, temperature and sunlight. During the garua season, the coast is very dry while the highlands are much wetter. The hot season may or may not have a rainy period which normally lasts four to six weeks, or in the event of El Nino, a longer period. During the hot season, the coastal zones remain arid. Prevailing winds from the southeast keep the southern sides of the major islands much moister then the northern sides, which fall into a rain shadow resulting in the arid zones reaching a much higher elevation. The months of May and December are changeover periods and weather and sea temperatures in these months tend to vary from year to year depending on the change in the water currents. Occasionally, one will feel humidity, predominantly on the south side of major islands. Compared to the humidity levels in the Amazon or the US South, the humidity in the Galapagos is very low and will not disturb activities. Snorkeling is an activity offered on all Galapagos trips. Wetsuits, available onboard most cruises and for all land tours, are recommended June through November. Though sea temperatures vary significantly from island to island, generally all travelers will use a wetsuit during this time. Snorkeling in shallow waters offshore or in protective coves tends to be warmer. Waters to the north, near Genovesa are warmed by the Panama Current, whereas snorkeling off the western island of Isabela is always chilly due to the cold Cromwell undercurrent. The Humboldt Current, or the South Equatorial Current, brings cold sub-Antarctic water that flows through the archipelago eight or nine months a year keeping sea temperatures low. One will experience a variance in sea temperatures while snorkeling on any trip during any time of the year. During the hot season, travelers tend to spend more time in the water, especially at midday when the temperatures are the hottest and wildlife is less active. Snorkeling is an optional activity and those who are not interested in snorkeling have other options. Sea Conditions are a concern of many cruise travelers. All Galapagos vessels are small; the largest accommodates only 100 passengers. Naturally, some movement will be felt on all vessels regardless of the time of year or the size of the vessel. The seas around the Galapagos are generally shallow and despite being the crossroads of several currents, the waters are not terribly rough. The seas are at their calmest January through April. December, May and June are transitional months during which one will experience relatively calm seas, though it varies year to year depending on the shift in the currents. July through November, one will find choppier seas, with August through October being the roughest. Certain vessels are more stable than others and cabin location can also help avoid seasickness. Most travel is done at night while passengers are sleeping with the only exception being the short midday transit (two hours or less). During the day, vessels dock in calm waters near shore. Passengers spend most of the day on land or snorkeling. These factors lessen the risk of seasickness. We recommend that you bring over-the-counter or prescription motion sickness medication, though many cruisers discover that the seas are much calmer than anticipated. If you are concerned about motion sickness, please contact us for more details on how to select the right vessel for you.

I was very impressed with the organization of our trip.  Everything Southern Explorations was responsible for went smoothly and everything was on schedule.  The Manatee on the Amazon had some initial trouble but it could not have been known or anticipated by SE.  Once again I would like to compliment Jorge on his work.  He made our comings and goings to and from Quito very easy.  If I go to South America again my first call will be to Southern Explorations. Thank you. - Peter Tuck, CA (Corals & Manatee)

A False Start Aboard the Eden Yacht

By: Author Dave Lee

Posted on Last updated: April 27, 2021

Airport on Santa Cruz Island

Touching down on the tarmac at Santa Cruz Island , it felt as though my Galapagos Islands adventure had finally begun.

The Eden yacht and its crew were awaiting me in a nearby harbor, but first, some paperwork had to be taken care of in the airport.

As I waited in line to show my passport and pay my $100 park entrance fee, additional planes arrived.

Sundays, it turns out, are the busiest days of the week, with up to a half dozen planes arriving in the morning.

Once the payment was made, my carry-on bag was searched, and I could collect my larger backpack.

Walking out the backside of the airport building, I saw a local holding a sign for The Eden yacht. It was Felipe who'd serve as our naturalist/guide for the whole 8-day journey.

Eden Yacht awaits its newest passengers in the harbor near the airport.

Boarding the Eden Yacht

But before we could get going, we had to wait for the rest of the boat's passengers to arrive. And that took another 45 minutes, as they were on the flight that arrived after mine.

By the time we left in the shuttle bus to the harbor, everyone else had already reached their boats.

A panga (or small dinghy ) was dispatched from Eden to ferry us over. Pangas are used by all the cruise ships to take passengers back and forth between the boats and islands and for snorkeling.

Everyone was excited to reach the yacht, which would serve as our home for the next seven days and nights.

My first impressions were very positive as I explored the yacht's main deck.

The interior design was modern; there were tablecloths on the two dining room tables, a handsome bar, and even a flat-screen TV in the lounge area.

Once everyone and their luggage were aboard, we were shown to our rooms.

I wasn't surprised to learn I was bunking with Sebastian, a Canadian truck driver with a penchant for backpacking; however, neither of us expected to be given a room on the 2nd level.

Given Sebastien towered over me, I took the top bunk, which was a little narrow, but would suffice for a week.

The bathroom was small, clean, and better than I expected. In addition to a central AC system feeding the room, we had the ability to open our window and let a breeze in.

Next, we had a briefing by Felipe regarding the afternoon's itinerary. We'd have our first nature walk on nearby Bachas Beach, followed by snorkeling, but first, we'd have lunch.

For the passenger's comfort, I gather, all meals are served while the boat is stationary, so we ate while bobbing around in the now-empty harbor.

The family-style dining tables were a good icebreaker, and everyone began to get to know one another.

A heron walks along the beach at sunset

Bachas Beach on Santa Cruz Island

After lunch, we motored over to Bachas Beach. Several other yachts were already anchored offshore, and I began to wonder if we'd have time to snorkel.

It seemed like we'd been behind schedule since the airport, but I tried not to let it bother me.

We boarded the Eden Yacht's two pangas and sped toward shore.

As we got closer, a giant flock of Blue Footed Boobies could be seen. And people were snorkeling amongst them all in the clear blue waters.

By now, the sun was already fading toward the horizon, and I knew we were too short on time. I accepted that we would miss our first snorkel and reminded myself there'd be many more that week.

Felipe led us to two separate ponds where Chilean Flamingoes were busy feeding.

We quickly saw our first Marine Iguanas and red Sally Lightfoot Crabs, herons, and a few other types of birds.

After visiting the ponds, we arrived back at the main beach, which was now devoid of the Boobies and snorkelers who'd returned to their yachts already.

There was a sweet stillness to the beach at sunset. I was no longer in a hurry and could enjoy the moment.

A Marine Iguana on Bachas Beach

The Breakdown

As the light faded, the pangas were dispatched to pick us up, and we passed our first pelican on the way back to the Eden Yacht.

Once onboard, the captain started up the engines, but we didn't seem to go anywhere.

Then, we noticed some of the crew on the pangas next to the boat. It was already dark, so something clearly wasn't right.

The more time that passed without us moving, the more obvious it became there was a serious problem.

Felipe told us we'd eat dinner first and have our briefing for the following day afterward (normally, the briefings happen before dinner). We all knew that was a stall tactic.

Either the crew was still trying to diagnose or fix the problem, or they needed time to figure out what to do with 16 paying passengers whose yacht just broke down on the first day of a week-long cruise.

Sunset in the Galapagos Islands

We continued to bond over our spaghetti dinner, after which we reconvened for the briefing.

Felipe, who looked young for his position as Galapagos nature guide, broke the news as we all held “welcome” cocktails.

The boat suffered a mechanical failure. And it wasn't something that could be fixed immediately.

He informed us that other 1st Class yachts were being contacted to see if they could take us.

The first boat offered up space for three of us — an older Italian couple, and Maya, an Israeli backpacker.

Only Maya would need to bunk with a man, which was not the normal protocol when pairing up single travelers on Galapagos cruises.

As they got their stuff together to be transferred, fear of the unknown set in with the rest of us.

Would they find another comparable yacht for us?

Would the new yacht have a similar, if not the same, itinerary as the Eden?

Many of us had chosen Eden specifically for its itinerary, which included far-flung Genovesa Island.

Time passed, and anxiety increased as we awaited Eden's Sales Manager, who was due to arrive on the yacht around 9 PM'ish to further address the situation with us.

Our cruise had barely begun, and we were already being forced to abandon ship.

I would've been more pissed off if it weren't for the others on the boat, many of whom maintained a steady stream of jokes to lighten the mood.

I gave them all credit for keeping their cool. Despite the high cost of a Galapagos cruise, not including the actual cost to reach Ecuador from the USA or Italy, everyone behaved maturely.

A little before 10 PM, Maya returned. Upon seeing the other boat, and her new room, complete with an older man sleeping in it, she refused to stay there and rejoined the rest of us.

Dining room on Eden Yacht

A little after 10 PM, the Sales Manager arrived on the Eden, looking very flustered. She recapped the situation; the boat suffered a mechanical accident that could not have been predicted.

It was not a reflection of poor maintenance (earlier in the year, the Eden underwent a three-month maintenance overhaul).

Somehow, the metal rod that connected one of the two motors to one of the two propellers had broken.

Of course, that was the bad news we already knew.

The good news was they'd come up with the best solution we all had been hoping for — transferring all of us to a new 1st Class yacht, Estrella del Mar, the following day.

The Estrella del Mar was a dive boat, and it wasn't scheduled with a tour, so it was undergoing routine maintenance.

I imagine Eden had to pay a pretty penny for this solution, not that we cared. But, I give them credit.

For it to work, they found an available boat of a similar class and worked out the charter with the owner, who then had to get a captain and crew together, prepare the boat, and stock it with food within about 12 to 14 hours.

There was no way around it. We had to accept the itinerary of the new yacht. The park service requires eight days to consider itinerary changes, even given extenuating circumstances.

We were losing a full day of our original itinerary, thereby missing Genovesa Island and the world's largest colony of Red Footed Boobies.

But there was nothing we could do, so humor and patience prevailed once again, and we all retired for the night.

Home » Destinations » Galapagos » Eden Islet

Located just off the northwestern shore of Santa Cruz Island, Eden Islet is a tiny tuff cone island with a diameter of about 2,000 feet. It may be small, but its name is well-deserved: Eden really is a little paradise, and a great place to spot an abundance of wildlife on land, in the air and in the water.

Main Visitor Sites on Eden Islet

Eden Islet is restricted and does not have any landing sites. Visitors explore the island by panga , a type of boat common in the Galapagos, sailing around the shoreline to see the island’s various habitats. Despite its small size, Eden has at least three distinct landscapes, including a flat and largely barren area; a section with large cliffs; and a thick coastal mangrove forest that grows on the black volcanic rocks.

The coastal cliffs provide prime perching sites for a variety of birds, including blue-footed boobies , brown pelicans, Nazca boobies , lava gulls, frigatebirds and brown noddy terns. It’s not uncommon for some species to plunge-dive from the cliffs, right next to the passing boats. Marine iguanas also nest on Eden.

The mangrove forests, meanwhile, have helped create a perfect habitat for marine wildlife. The red and white mangrove trees, some of which are thousands of years old, grow along the lava rocks. They help with the breeding and retention of plankton, which in turn attracts Pacific green sea turtles, reef sharks, eagle rays and Sally Lightfoot crabs, which come to feed in the shallow waters around the island.

The clear, shallow waters therefore provide excellent wildlife-spotting opportunities right from your boat. To get even closer, visitors can also snorkel from their boats, where they can swim with sharks, rays, marine iguanas and other inhabitants of Eden Islet and its surrounding waters.
