Vicki on her private jet charter with her pet parent

There are so many ways to travel with pets. Driving, cruise ships, commercial air travel, and if you can afford it, a pet friendly private jet charter just for you and your furry friends.

Of course, the cost for a private jet is substantially more expensive than the alternatives. Keep in mind, you are reserving the entire plane just for your flight, on your schedule, and you have your very own private pilots. This does come at a cost. Every trip is different depending on the duration of the flight, how many passengers are flying and the size and number of pets accompanying you.

It will certainly be a trip not soon to be forgotten; a special experience for both you and your best friends.

Sample Prices for Chartering a Private Jet

*The number of pets will depend on the size of the pet. Smaller pets like cats, small dogs and bunnies may be flown in greater numbers.

Recent changes implemented by the US Department of Transportation have allowed airlines to drop destinations from their routes, with 15 major airlines discontinuing service to 75 cities across the United States, with the potential for more reductions. With a pet friendly private jet charter, you have instant access to domestic and international air travel at executive and regional airports near you!

We have partnered with Air Charter Advisors, a Wyvern* Broker, to assist with your flight, and they are happy to offer very competitive rates while still making the safety of you and your pet a top priority. Above are a few example routes, and, if they fit your budget – fill in a few details to request a free quote.

Private Jet Charter

Why charter a private jet for you and your pet?

There are many different reasons for chartering a private aircraft to fly with your pet instead of flying on a commercial airline.

Size - In today's world of shrinking airline seats, it is getting more and more difficult to take your pet in the cabin of the aircraft. If your best friend is over 15 pounds or more than 12 inches tall, then it will probably have to fly in the cargo hold (depending on the airline). This section of the cargo is pressurized and temperature controlled, but you might be concerned about putting your pet in the cargo hold of a commercial airline.

Summer/Winter Embargoes - During the summer when temperature exceeds 84 degrees F on the runway, many airlines will not accept a pet as checked baggage or as cargo. During the colder months, airlines will not transport your pet if the temperatures fall below 45 degrees F.

Number of Pets Traveling with You - Most airlines limit you to one pet per passenger in the cabin. If you have multiple pets or the pets are traveling unaccompanied, then they will need to travel as checked baggage or as cargo.

Breed of Pet - very few airlines will accept snub nose breeds such as Persian cats, Bulldogs, Pugs and Shih-Tzus in the cargo hold as they may develop breathing problems at high altitudes.

Immigration Requirements - Many countries such as the United Kingdom, will only allow pets to fly commercially as manifest (air) cargo and not in the cabin.

Comments from one of our happy travelers

We can't thank you enough for the most incredible experience. This flight was the best flight I have ever taken and I have flown many commercial airlines in all classes of service but the private plane can not compare. It didn't even feel like we were flying in an airplane, our bunnies did great, much better than we expected. They were relaxed and even went into their routines, sleeping and eating. Our bonded girls stayed in the carrier, they are a little skittish because they are ex-lab bunnies we rescued. Roger and Maribelle (adopted from a rescue) were definitely more relaxed and explored. Car rides are much worse for all of them compared to this flight. The pilots were amazing. The Captain brought ice and cooler because you had mentioned that I needed to bring greens for my bunnies.

Thank you. Everything went so smoothly and we can't thank you enough for being so supportive and accommodating our needs and concerns. I am now confident that I can move easily in the future with my bunnies anywhere! Thank you again. With gratitude, Kitty and the buns

Why charter a private jet to fly with your pet?

Flying with your pets shouldn’t have to be a compromise for you or your four-legged friends. Charter a private jet and enjoy a safe and enjoyable journey for both of you.

Reduced stress and anxiety

Unlike travelling in the cargo, cabins offer a pet-friendly atmosphere where your animal companions can feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the journey. Always by your side, they can avoid the separation anxiety that comes with flying on commercial airlines, and you can enjoy peace of mind knowing they are safe.  Airports can be overwhelming environments, full of busy queues, noisy crowds, and other stress-inducing factors. Private airport terminals allow you to bypass the chaos, board efficiently, and enjoy a discrete journey from A to B.

Cabin comfort and personalised services

Aboard your luxury private jet, your pets can move around freely, stretch out, and even have their own designated area. Pet-friendly amenities, such as comfortable bedding, toys, or gourmet pet meals, are also available upon request. Our team can also provide personalised pet services and are on hand to attend to their every need, whether that’s providing stress-relief techniques, on-demand veterinary care, or pre- and post-flight dog walking services.

Cat on a pet friendly private jet charter

Enhanced safety and handling

When you choose a private charter, your pets can travel in the cabin with you. which means you can monitor their wellbeing and comfort throughout the journey. You can also calm their nerves (and vice versa) or address any concerns promptly. Whereas, in cargo, pets are out of sight and reach, making it difficult to attend to their needs or notice any distressing signs, especially when it comes to longer-haul flights. ‍ Pets travelling in commercial cargo can be more susceptible to mishandling during loading, unloading, and transit. With a private flight, you can guarantee your pets will be treated like royalty, with specialised animal-handling staff and tailored services.

How much does it cost to charter a private jet with your pet?

At Global Charter, we do not charge you anything extra for bringing your pets on board. For personalised pet services, an additional charge may apply, but this will be included in your quote. Note that some operators may charge an additional fee or admin charges, depending on your airport of choice.

What documentation is required to fly with your pet?

Pet-friendly private jet charter is simple so long as you have the correct pet documentation and up-to-date vaccinations. Each country will have its own documentation requirements, but our team will be there to provide you with all the information you need and help ensure the process is as seamless as possible. Please note that regulations are subject to change, so please check with our travel experts for more information on current pet travel guidelines.

Flying with a Dog | Preparations to Make Before You Book

As shown in an article released by Consumer Reports , the cost to bring your cat, dog, or other pets aboard your flight can add up quickly. Outside of purchasing your tickets and paying pet travel service fees, there are a handful of things that are recommended you do before your flight, including:

Vet Visits Before your flight, it’s a good idea to visit your veterinarian to give your cat or dog a clean bill of health. Depending on where you’re flying and which airline you fly with, a health certificate may be required to ensure your pet’s pre-flight fitness. This can cost hundreds of dollars for a vet visit, plus any treatment or medicine needed to make sure they’re ready for the trip.

Microchip Implants Your dog will be presented with several distractions and diversions between the crowded airports and an array of new smells emitting from both people and food courts. If one isn’t implanted already, having a microchip installed will make it much easier to track down your pets should your dog or cat escape while in an unfamiliar place. The cost for microchip implants go for around $45, according to Petfinder .

Flea Bath If you’re planning on staying at a hotel and/or renting a car, it’s a good precautionary step to give your a dog flea treatment, which typically runs around $10 to $20 at your local vet. Since your dog/cat will be exposed to all sorts of new areas, it can help avoid any additional cleaning fees in case any fleas or other critters hop aboard and get left behind.

Airline-Compliant Crate If you’re planning on bring your dog in the cabin with you, you’ll need an airline-compliant pet carrier, which can cost between $30 to $250 and up. Pet travel experts recommend flexible, airline-compliant pet carriers with waterproof bottoms, adequate ventilation, and zippers to secure your pet. Your pets must also show they’re able to stand up and turn around inside of the carrier. And, the carrier must fit under your seat. Remember: measure twice, purchase once.

Once you’re clear for take-off, it’s time to think about which services works best for you and your pets.

Traveling with Pets via Commercial Airlines

The cost to fly your dog or cat on a commercial airline can range from a $100 to $125 one-way fee to fly with your dog inside the cabin, to upwards of $1,000 for larger pets required to fly in the aircraft cargo area.

dogs on commercial flights

Some commercial airlines allow you to travel with your pet in the cabin, however, this is limited to smaller animals that can fit under the same airline seats your knees are banging into. When traveling with your dog on a commercial flight, passengers are typically charged between a $100 to $150 fee (one-way) to bring your dog in the cabin.

You may be required to crate your pet (and even sedate it) for the duration of the flight. This is not only unsettling for many pet owners, but potentially harmful and unsafe for your pet’s health as well. Depending on your pet’s size, it may also be restricted to flying in the cargo compartment with the rest of your luggage where temperatures and conditions may be unsuitable and dangerous.

Although the Animal Welfare Act of 1966 requires temperatures to be at safe levels, they can fluctuate. And, if you’ve flown commercial before, you know that the air can be turned off while waiting at the gate before your flight if your flight is delayed.

For these reasons, the Humane Society strongly recommends against transporting your pet by air unless absolutely necessary, saying “Animals flown in the cargo area of airplanes are killed, injured, or lost on commercial flights each year. Excessively hot or cold temperatures, poor ventilation, and rough handling conditions are often to blame.”

Airline Travel with Smaller Pets

If your pet is small enough to fit in a carrier, which goes beneath the seat in front of you, this method of travel by air is far and away your best bet for a safe, worry-free trip (the price for an airline-compliant pet carrier runs between $30 up to $250).

If your pet won’t fit underneath your seat, then they will have to be transported inside the cargo hold of the aircraft, something pet owners may want to think twice about doing before risking their pet’s health and safety.

Airline Travel with Larger Pets

Depending on whether they’re traveling alone, larger pets are considered to be checked luggage (accompanied) or as air cargo (larger pets or unaccompanied). Pets weighing up to approximately 75 pounds can travel as checked baggage when accompanied by a passenger.

Upon arrival at the airport, you’re required to pay for an additional fee to allow your pet to travel in the airliner’s cargo compartment (similar to a bag). They will need to be crated and left at the bag drop area with the bag handling crew.

They will be transported in a baggage cart from the terminal and placed inside the cargo compartment where they will wait until the flight is completed , and the same process when you land. This means your pet will be inside their crate for hours, and you’re exposing them to risks such as delays, and hoping handlers don’t mistreat your pet.

On airlines that offer this service, this section of the cargo hold is fully pressurized and heated. The cost to fly a dog in the cargo hold ranges between $50 to $500. Added together with an approved crate, this can reach up to $1,000. Make sure you check with your airline’s reservation or cargo department.

Pet Friendly Jet Charters | Fur-st Class Travel for Pets

Pet friendly jet charters with your furry, four-legged friends are a great idea for vacations, allowing you and your pets to explore new areas together while enjoying the same comfortable travel experience. They’re also ideal for moving & re-locations, taking far less time than cross-country road-trips.

charter air travel with pets cost

Your pets will get to pass through private terminals at your nearest airport, avoiding the long lines for security and baggage screenings at major commercial airports; many commercial airports also offer private terminals for charter passengers.

Once you’re on board, you can either leave your pet in their carrier, or let them explore the cabin and relax. The only additional fees incurred by using charter planes to travel with pets are cleaning fees, but this is only in the event one of them makes a mess.

What’s the cost to bring a dog on a private plane?

There is no additional charge to bring your pets on a private flight with you. However, hourly rates on pet-friendly charter planes start around $1,500 for piston and turboprop aircraft; can reach up to $5,000 an hour for light and midsize jets; and climb upwards of $10,000 for wide-cabin, long-range jets capable of flying you and your pets overseas.

Chartering a private plane can be the ideal solution if you’re planning on relocating internationally with multiple dogs and other pets, especially if we can locate an empty leg private jet that matches the routing of your flight.

Private jet travelers can expect to pay anywhere between $10,000 to $50,000 to charter an entire aircraft for cross country flights. If you want to bring Fido on a short hop from Los Angeles to San Francisco, the price can range between $5,000 to $10,000, depending on the aircraft used.

For a family of four traveling with two dogs on a one-way flight from New York to Los Angeles, the cost is approximately $38,000, while the same group can fly one-way from New York to Miami for around and $16,000.

Policies for pet travel on charter planes are set by the operators and owners of the aircraft, and each owner can specify what type of pets and how many (if any) they will allow on their plane. Air Charter Advisors specialize in private jets for pets, with access to pet friendly charter planes located near you. Although the quotes for these flights are all-inclusive, should your dog scratch up the interior of the plane or make a mess mid-flight, additional cleaning fees are billed separately.

Flying with pets in Great Britain & the EU

Since the UK left the European Union (on 1st January 2021) there have been some changes to the pet travel document requirements for private flights (or other travel) with pets between the two. This largely impacts flights from Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) into Northern Ireland and the EU - as the EU no longer recognises the old UK Pet Passport as a valid entry document. Flights from EU member states to Great Britain can continue to enter using an EU pet passport. For travel from Great Britain to Northern Ireland or the EU, pet owners will need to have an Animal Health Certificate (AHC), which must have been issued no more than 10 days prior to travel. This is valid for four months so can be used for travel within the EU or for a return journey. A new AHC is required for each new departure from GB. In addition to the pet travel documents, for travel in either direction (and indeed for flights to many other non-EU countries) you will also need to ensure that each pet:

  • Has a microchip
  • Has been vaccinated against rabies
  • Has had a tapeworm treatment in the case of dogs (a few countries are exempt from this requirement)

Within the EU, clients with pets can travel freely between airports in most other European countries, without restriction.

How to Plan for the Best Private Jet Experience with Your Pet

Sep 17, 2021

charter air travel with pets cost

One of many great advantages of chartering an entire private jet is the ability to easily bring pets on board our jet and safely seat them with you in the cabin.

Many private jet companies, including XO, not only invite you to bring your pets on board for private jet vacations and private travel, but also offer amenities to make them feel calm and comfortable throughout your flight with a very attentive private jet cabin crew.

Pet Travel Guidelines

Here are some guidelines that will help you plan for private jet travel with your pet:

  • You’ll need to obtain a certification of veterinary inspection from your veterinary provider with a list of any required medications. The certification must be federally accredited, obtained within 10 days of travel, and include a photo of your pet.
  • Pets must have an updated microchip with your most current address and contact information.
  • Private carriers have different policies about the weight of your animal, and sometime certain breeds. Most require pets that weigh 100 pounds or more to lie beside you on the floor. For take-off and landing they ask that they be leashed to your seat. Smaller pets can be seated next to you. For take-off and landing they can either be seat belted in or placed in a pet carrier.
  • When flying internationally with a pet, a pet passport will usually be required. This certifies that your pet is healthy and fully vaccinated. For more information on pet passports and rules by country, please check these links:

Private jet charter with your pet.

Traveling with a pet doesn't have to be a traumatic or risky experience. In fact, flying by private jet reassures both you and your furry friend travel in comfort together. If you're planning to take your pet on the next trip, with Paramount Business Jets it will be a safe and easy endeavor.

Importantly, when you use a private jet charter, you can check on your companion's well-being and happiness throughout the flight. And you surely know that the comfort and peace of mind of knowing they're safe and sound right next to you is just priceless. Paramount Business Jets will help you with all the documentation and knowledge of pet travel guidelines, enabling you and your pet to reach the destination together, safely and happily.

Benefits of Private Jet Charter for Flying with Pets

  • You avoid the risks, stress, and inconvenience of flying commercially with your companions.
  • You fly with your pet in the cabin, which is significantly safer for them than being locked in a cargo hold and much more comfortable than being stowed under another passenger's seat.
  • Your pet can be of any size, while on commercial airlines. Size regulations are getting stricter and stricter, leaving large pet owners very little flexibility when traveling.
  • There's no maximum number of animals in the cabin per passenger, while any commercial air carrier allows a limited number of pets – usually it's one, and other animals must be stowed in the cargo hold.
  • You can travel any time of the year, unlike with many airlines who don't allow pets to fly in the cargo hold during warmer and colder months due to the increased risk and liability issues.
  • You're not affected by breed restrictions, which ban some breeds from flying.
  • You can give your pets full attention and monitor their well-being throughout the flight.

Legal Requirements for Pet Travel

Dog packed and ready to fly privately

I'm packed. Let's go to my jet!

Internationally, countries have different guidelines regarding traveling with pets. However, as long as pet owners provide valid documentation for their pets, Paramount Business Jets will handle the rest. By working through the appropriate channels, we'll ensure a perfectly pet-friendly private jet charter.

Requirements for Pets Flying in the USA

  • Up-to-date rabies vaccinations are required when traveling through any part of the country.
  • Cats and dogs must be at least 8 weeks old.
  • Animals must be weaned.
  • Some states require health certificates from a veterinarian.

These are a few restrictions to keep in mind before getting on the aircraft with a pet. Remember that to ensure the ultimate safety and comfort of your pets during air travel, using a private charter is clearly the best option.

Choosing the Right Aircraft to Travel With Pets

Even in the case of a private jet charter, pets may get stressed at certain times, especially during take-off and landing. Therefore, you might want to choose a type of aircraft that will help them relax. The available space and cabin noise levels are particularly important factors, which usually make the aircraft pet-friendly.

The owners of large-breed dogs know that not all aircraft are suitable for flying with their pets. For example, aircraft with dropped center aisles may be uncomfortable for larger breeds, as they can only lie down in one direction down the aisle. When traveling with larger breeds, we recommend choosing an aircraft with a flat floor cabin. These planes provide big animals with the comfort of being able to lie down on their side and stretch out.

Private Jets with Flat Floor Cabins Suitable for Large Pets Include:

  • Beech Jet 400A , light jet
  • Hawker 400XP , light jet
  • Nextant 400XT , light jet
  • Citation Latitude , super mid
  • Hawker 4000 , super mid
  • Falcon 2000 , 2000EX , 2000LX , super mid
  • Challenger 300 , 350 super mid
  • Any Large Jet

How to Travel With Your Dog on a Shared Charter Flight | Blog Name

A comprehensive guide to traveling with your dog on a shared charter flight.

If you want to take your furry friend on vacation but a regular commercial flight isn’t an option, a shared charter flight may be the solution. As the owner of two rescue dogs myself, I know how important it is to include pets in family travel plans when possible. However, there are some important considerations to keep in mind when transporting dogs on shared charter flights.

Is My Dog Eligible to Fly?

The first thing to check is whether your dog is allowed to travel in the passenger cabin based on size restrictions. Most charter flights only accept small and medium-sized dogs due to limited space. Your pet will need to be 8 weeks or older, current on vaccinations, and able to fit comfortably in a FAA-approved pet carrier that fits under the seat. Aggressive breeds may have additional restrictions, so do your research ahead of time.

Preparing Your Dog for Takeoff

Even the calmest dog can get nervous in new situations like flying. From my experience as a vet, I recommend practicing crate training well before your trip and getting your dog used to the carrier they’ll fly in. You can also ask your vet about calming supplements. On the day of travel, limit food and water intake to avoid accidents. Be sure to bring your dog’s ID tags, health/vaccine records, leash, and plenty of absorbent pads.

Booking and Policies

Most charter flight operators allow one small dog per passenger on a first-come, first-served basis. Popular routes may book up quickly during peak seasons, so reserve a spot for Fido as early as possible. Be prepared to pay pet transportation fees, which average $100-200 each way. Policies on unclaimed or disruptive pets vary, so thoroughly read the fine print. It’s also wise to book with airlines that have experience handlinganimals.

Arriving at the Airport

Plan to arrive at least 1-2 hours before your scheduled departure to allow extra time for checking in your pet. Most airports require seeing proof of vaccinations, a health certificate if traveling between countries, and securing your dog in the carrier before proceeding through security. It’s a good idea to print all travel documents to avoid last-minute scrambling. Stay calm and focused to help keep your pup stress-free too.

Onboard Comfort and Safety

When boarding, keep your dog’s carrier under the seat in front of you for takeoff and landing as instructed. Consider bringing treats, toys, or smelly items from home for distraction. Avoid letting your pet loose at any time for their protection and others’ comfort. Accidents can happen, so bring cleaning supplies just in case. The flight crew is accustomed to transporting pets safely, but signal right away if your dog seems distressed.

What About Layovers?

For multi-stop itineraries, discuss with the airline how they handle pets during layovers. Some may allow you to retrieve your dog during connections to let them stretch, potty, or be fed. More commonly though, they remain securely in the cargo hold or passenger cabin. Either way, pack extra provisions if there’s any delay to prevent discomfort. Knowing layover policies upfront can ease stress for both you and your furry flyer.

Picking Them Up at Your Destination

Upon arrival, pets are usually among the first items released from the plane. Have their leash and collar ready to claim them efficiently before proceeding to baggage claim with other passengers. Resist excessive excitement upon reuniting – let them calm down first. Then you’re off on your pup-inclusive getaway! With preparation and by following airline rules, shared charter flights can be a decent option for taking dogs when leisurely driving isn’t possible.

Challenges You May Encounter

No mode of pet travel is completely without hassle, so it’s important to have backup plans. Here are some issues folks have faced along with solutions:

  • Carrier regulations change: Staff may deny boarding if your carrier no longer meets policy. Bring two options sized for airline limits.
  • Your dog acts fearful/vocal: Request anxiety medication from vet. Bring favorite toy/treat to distract. Consider sedatives if truly uncontrollable.
  • Overbooking causes denied boarding: Most carriers are first-come, first-kept, so book early. Request standby and vet references as backup.
  • Weather/delays cause missed connections: Include a margin of time between flights. Pet-sitters nearby could watch pups until weather clears.

While not ideal for every dog, a shared charter provides an option for flying Fido when no other exists. With diligent planning and flexibility for mishaps, the rewards of bonding vacay time together can outweigh the hassles.

Alternatives If Flying Isn’t Viable

If your dog isn’t suited to travel by air, consider ground transport. For road warriors, specialized pet RV rentals allow driving directly to sunny spots. Boarding facilities near your destination provide care while you enjoy activities dog-free. And newer services like ” fetching” let trusted sitters chauffeur canines on car rides for moderately more cost. There’s usually a way to vacation with your loyal pal – you just gotta get creative!

The Joy of Including Your Pup

While shared flights require extra effort, seeing the stoked look on a dog’s face upon arrival someplace new makes it all worthwhile. My Boston terrier Luke is always game for whatever adventure I bring him on. Whether we’re hiking lush trails, sunbathing on the beach, or taking in city sights together – those memories of quality time with my furry best friend will last forever. Basically, if the shared charter arrangement seems tolerable for your trusty companion, don’t deprive them of participation in your travels!

As you can see, there are many considerations when transporting a dog on a shared charter flight. With proper planning and accommodating your pet’s needs, it can be a viable option for taking furry family members on vacation when other modes aren’t feasible. Always prioritize your dog’s comfort and safety above all else. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Factors to Consider When Booking a Shared Charter Flight for Your Dog

  • Can I bring my dog on a shared charter flight? Basically, it depends on the airline and type of flight. Some charter flights allow small dogs in airplane cabins if they stay in a carrier under the seat. Larger dogs may have to ride in the cargo hold.
  • Will my dog be comfortable on the plane? It can be sort of stressful for pups to fly. Make sure your dog is used to traveling in a carrier before the big day. Consider calming treats or ask your vet about anxiety medicine. With some preparation, most pups can handle a flight.
  • What paperwork is required for my dog? You’ll need a health certificate from your vet stating that your pet has had all necessary vaccinations. Rabies tags or certification should be visible too. Check airline rules for any other documents needed, like import permits.
  • How do I keep my dog safe in cargo? Airlines have stringent protocols, but it’s still not amazing to think of your pup down there alone. Consider extra crate padding and filling water/food dishes before flight. “But is it worth worrying your doggo?” as the experts say. Maybe traveling with your pup in the cabin is kinder if allowed.
  • Will my dog be okay in the baggage hold? As long as proper paperwork and crate conditions are met, most pups do fine in cargo despite what tugging dog parent hearts want to think. Nevertheless, it’s rumored chilling outside temps or delays could potentially cause issues. Perhaps ask the airline lots of questions to ease your mind.
  • What if my dog gets lost during the flight? Airlines appear to lose animals distressingly often during transport. Microchipping and ID tags with multiple contact methods seem obvious but essential precautions. On the other hand, most pups do travel safely – but is that chance worth taking?
  • How can I prepare my nervous dog for air travel? Practice crate/car travel and desensitize to airport commotion before flight day. Consider calming supplements or pheromone sprays as well. Also pack pup’s favorite blanket or toys for comfort. Above all, stay calm yourself – dogs can sense our anxiety!
  • What are some alternatives to flying my dog? Driving or taking a train lets you soothe your pup’s worries in person. Hiring a petsitter to transport is another option,I suppose. But long road trips can be tiring too – who wouldn’t get antsy cooped in a car for hours on end? Lots of things to weigh, huh?

What To Know About Traveling Internationally With Your Pets

T raveling internationally with your pet can be a great experience. For one, most of us consider our pets family, so exploring the world or vacationing with our quadrupedal companion can be an exciting proposition. But in some circumstances, it may be difficult — if not impossible — to travel internationally without your pet. Boarding costs and pet-sitting fees can be astronomical, and without calling in favors from family or friends, you may not be in a situation to leave your pet stateside for an extended period of time.

Knowing how to travel with a dog internationally (or cat) wisely can be the difference between a rewarding experience and a hassle-plagued trip. Taking your pet requires forethought, in-depth research, and savvy trip planning. While the idea of traveling with your furry confidant may be appealing, it's also a big responsibility with its own unique considerations, probably dictating what airlines you take, where you plan to stay, and the experiences you'll have.

That said, the reward of sharing your travels with your pet can make the effort, expenses, and sacrifices well worth it. But to avoid major problems, you'll need to be well-acquainted with everything traveling internationally with your pet entails.

Finding A Pet-Friendly Flight

To begin planning your international adventure, it's imperative to research the various pet policies across different airlines. Most major airlines allow small dogs and cats to fly in the cabin with you, as long as they're placed in an FAA-approved pet carrier that fits comfortably under the seat. If you're the pet parent of a small dog or cat, you'll still need to check your flight before purchasing a ticket. Typically, airlines only allow a certain amount of pets on a flight, so you need to ensure a spot's available for your pet before purchasing your own ticket.

If your dog isn't small enough to fit under the seat in front of you, things get a bit more complicated. The only U.S.-based carriers that allow dogs to fly in the cargo hold are Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, and Hawaiian. Fortunately, international airlines tend to be a bit more accommodating. Air France, Swiss, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, TAP, SAS, British Airways, Alitalia, KLM, and Japan Airlines all currently allow larger pets to fly in cargo.

Pet Policies And Alternative Transport Options

It's important to note that some, but not all, airlines also have breed restrictions for the dogs they allow to fly in the cargo hold . These restrictions are typically imposed on short-nosed breeds, such as boxers, bulldogs, Boston terriers, and others, as these Brachycephalic breeds are prone to breathing difficulties. Overall, it's a good idea to contact the airline directly concerning any questions regarding breed restrictions.

If you're unable to find a flight that can accommodate you and your pet, whether due to breed restrictions or other factors, there's still hope. You may have the option to ship your pet through a commercial transport company, but you'll need to ensure the company is part of the International Pet and Animal Transportation Association (IPATA), a regulated organization that adheres to ethical safety standards.

If you are trying to travel with your pug or bulldog, IPATA works with airlines and transport companies that may accommodate your pet. IPATA created a Brachycephalic Certification Program that allows these types of breeds to fly after passing a fit-to-fly assessment. These specialized assessments can be conducted by a certified veterinarian, and the results are given to the airlines and companies partnering with IPATA, helping to ensure the safety of your dog.

The Cost Of Flying With Your Pet

Airline pet fees aren't cheap. If your pet is small enough to fly in the cabin, the fees can be up to a few hundred dollars one-way, but these prices increase dramatically if the pet is traveling in the cargo hold. The cost will depend on the airline, the route (with or without layovers), and the size of the crate.

In most cases, when traveling with a pet, it's wise to spend up for a direct flight versus trying to save with layovers if your pet is in the cargo hold. But if your itinerary must include a layover or multiple, many airlines require a three-hour minimum time window between your connecting flights. This gives the airline ample time to feed, give water, and walk your dog to use the bathroom, but fair warning, these services aren't cheap. It's always a good idea to check with the airline to learn more about their specific policies.

If a direct flight isn't possible, then try to at least stick to the same airline. In simplest terms, changing airlines in a foreign country will require you to claim your dog from cargo, then pay another pet fee to the new airline. You'll also need to clear your dog through customs.

Paperwork And Health Assessments

Before you depart, you'll need to make sure your pet's paperwork is in order. While countries differ in their requirements, most require the following at minimum. First, you'll need to take your pet to a veterinarian to receive an international health certificate no more than 10 days before departure (or entry to the foreign country). You'll also need proof of a rabies vaccination taken within the last year for most destinations, as well as governmental export paperwork.

In addition, some countries require blood titer tests for rabies and proof of parasite prevention treatments. You need to research the requirements carefully of the particular country to ensure you have the proper paperwork, as the requirements are not flexible. Your pet will also require an ISO-compliant microchip, which is the world standard. If you need to update your pet's vaccinations, many countries require that the microchip be implanted before the pet receives its vaccinations. Finally, while most countries do not require a quarantine period upon entry, some rabies-free and island nations do, such as Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Iceland. The length of quarantine varies by country.

Prepping Your Pet For Flight

Along with knowing how to travel with a dog internationally in financial and regulatory terms, it's equally as important to prepare your pet for the trip, especially if it's a long-haul flight. For instance, if your pet isn't used to being in a crate, then it's a good idea to acquaint your pet with one for a few weeks before the flight. This could mean requiring them to sleep in a crate or leaving them in one for periods of time.

Same idea with puppy pads. Whether they're flying in the cabin or the cargo hold, your fur buddy will probably be expected to use a pet relief area at some point. Flying can be a stressful experience for a pet, but introducing them to a crate and pads beforehand may help the situation.

While traveling internationally with a pet can be costly and time-consuming, it can also be an extremely rewarding experience after the rigmarole, as long as you plan carefully and know what to expect.

But don’t worry – we’re here to help!

We’ve fetched the basic requirements for traveling with your dog on all of the major U.S. airlines, and highlighted our favorite features. Check out the best pet-friendly airlines and some tips for flying with your pup below.

Pet-Friendly Airline Info: The Basics We’ve Covered

flying with your dog

Every airline has its own set of rules for canine travel, but we’ve tackled the basics to give a snapshot of each. Hopefully, this makes narrowing your options a tad easier.

Some of the things we cover below include:

  • Flying with your dog in the cabin . Not every airline allows dogs to travel with passengers in the plane’s cabin. Some limit canines to the cargo area only, while others allow for cabin travel if canines meet specific size, behavior, or containment requirements. Typically, well-behaved, small dogs that can be stowed in an airline-approved pet carrier under an airline seat are allowed, though there are also a very few airlines that allow large breeds to travel via cabin too.
  • Flying with your dog in the cargo hold . Some airlines allow dogs to travel in the cargo hold. Housed in a carrier that meets strict safety standards, cargo-held canines generally have less strict size requirements than cabin-dwelling doggos, allowing larger breeds to fly. However, current travel trends have made cargo travel hard to come by for dogs.
  • Banned breeds . Many airlines ban certain breeds from flying in the cabin or cargo area. This typically includes brachycephalic (short-headed) dogs, though some providers may prohibit other breeds from flying.
  • Rules for emotional support animals and service dogs . Previously many airlines allow ESAs to travel differently than everyday pet dogs, but the vast majority of airlines have done away with ESAs on flights. However, per federal law, service dogs are granted access to planes with their handler, regardless of the airlines’ pet policy. Not sure about the difference between service dogs vs ESA dogs – let us explain!
  • Pet flying fees . The cost of traveling with your dog varies significantly from airline to airline, with some pet passes costing little more than a checked-bag fee while others can be a few hundred dollars or more. These fees may change according to your dog’s size and travel method too.
  • Weight restrictions for flying dogs . Weight restrictions can be a real bite, particularly if you plan to have your pooch travel in the cabin. Cabin weight limits tend to be much lower than cargo limits, but it’s important in both scenarios to weigh your pup and factor in the weight of his travel crate. This eliminates potential airport surprises, as your pooch is weighed in his carrier before boarding. Generally speaking, flying in the cabin won’t be a viable option unless your dog is under 20 lbs.
  • Dog crate size for riding in the cabin . Most airlines require kenneled canines to be stowed under an airline if traveling in the cabin, meaning your dog’s crate needs to meet specific size criteria. These sizing guidelines vary from airline to airline, so always double-check the rules, especially if you have connecting flights with different airlines. In addition, your dog should be able to stand, sit, and turn around in his carrier.
  • Dog crate size for flying in the cargo hold . Cargo crates must meet International Air Transport Association (IATA) requirements , which include strict size, locking, and ventilation standards. As with cabin carriers, your dog must be able to stand, sit, and turn around comfortably in the kennel.
  • Maximum number of pets per person . Most airlines allow one pet per passenger, but some allow two. Sometimes, this means two pets in the same carrier or two pets housed in separate carriers. But just because you can fit two dogs in a carrier, that doesn’t mean you should . Not every dog likes being crammed with a friend while already enduring the stress of travel.
  • Maximum number of pets per airplane . Airlines typically limit the number of animals on a flight, which can lead to travel nightmares if you don’t book early. A six-pet limit is most commonly seen, but some have limits as low as two. Yikes!
  • Dog age requirements for flying . Like destinations, each airline sets its own rules regarding how old a dog must be to travel. Most of the time, this pertains to puppies, but senior dogs may also face scrutiny, particularly those in poor health.
  • Special notes and miscellaneous four-footed flying facts . We’ll note if an airline has any special rules or pet perks. This might include things like special document requirements, restrictions, and more.

While we’re covering the basics in this article, you should still discuss your travel plans with an airline representative to ensure you and your pooch fly without issue. Rules are ever-changing, so it’s best to err on the side of caution.

General Tips for Flying with Your Pet

pet flying tips and tricks

Flying to a destination with your furry adventure buddy is loads of fun, but to keep it that way, you should follow a few rules of the skies, including:

  • Book early. Most airlines limit the amount of pets allowed per flight. To snag one of these coveted spots for your sniffer, book your trip as soon as possible.
  • Double-check all of the details with the airline. When in doubt, ask. Airline rules are ever-changing, especially with continued complications in a post-pandemic world. It’s better to dot all of your Is and cross your Ts than to be surprised at check-in.
  • Select an airline-ap p roved crate when flying cargo . Carriers come in all shapes and sizes, many of which aren’t airline compliant with their gadgets and gizmos. Check size requirements with your airline and other concerns, such as acceptable materials or rules about crate locks. Also, note that these can vary by dog breed.
  • Talk to your vet. Square away vaccination updates and health checks before planning any trips with your pup. It’s important to determine if your dog is fit to fly and to have your ducks in a row paperwork-wise for vaccinations.
  • Pack medications. Sometimes travel brain gets the best of us and we forget the most important everyday items like underwear or your dog’s medications. If possible, these should be among the first supplies you pack. They should be in their original containers with your vet’s information too to avoid any transparency problems.
  • Consider your pet’s needs over yours. Not every dog likes to fly or is well-suited for flight. Health issues and personality quirks can put unnecessary stress on your canine. While you may be looking forward to taking in the sights and sounds of an exotic locale, your dog may be too anxious to enjoy such a trip. Sometimes staying home with a trusted petsitter is best.
  • Can’t fly? Consider ground transportation . If your dog isn’t a good fit for flying, there are plenty of great pet ground transportation services that can drive your dog to your final destination. With shared van and private van options, you can usually find a service that won’t break your budget (although overall, pet ground transport is definitely pricier than flying, as it takes longer and requires more manual labor on the driver’s part).

Pet-Friendly Airlines: FAQ

dog flying questions

Flying with your dog can be a head scratcher sometimes. Check out these commonly asked questions to brush up on your knowledge about traveling by air with your dog.

Is it safe to travel with your pet?

In many cases, yes.

Most healthy dogs fly in an airplane’s cabin without issue, especially the most travel-friendly breeds .

Risks increase if your dog is brachycephalic (short-faced,) medically frail, or traveling in the cargo area. Most airlines do not even allow any kind of plane travel for brachycephalic breeds or breeds that are prone to issues like overheating.

Traveling by air with young puppies or seniors is also not advised and often not allowed by major airlines.

If you have any concerns about your dog’s safety during travel, contact your vet to discuss if flying is the best option or if a staycation is a better pupper plan.

What is the safest airline for pets?

According to a 2018 report by the Department of Transportation detailing incidents involving the loss, injury, or death of animals during air transportation, airlines reporting zero incidents include Horizon Air, Republic Airways, Endeavor Air, Mesa Airlines, ExpressJet Airlines, GoJet Airlines, Compass Airline, CommutAir, Envoy Air, and Sun Country Airlines.

However, it’s worth noting that these airlines transported far fewer animals than major carriers, with the majority flying less than 10,000 animals annually.

Alaska Airlines reported the least incidents among major airlines, with 1 injury per 143,634 pets flown. SkyWest Airlines and American Airlines also experienced fewer incidents. The worst-performing major airline was Hawaiian Airlines, with 3 deaths in the 9,505 pets flown.

Despite the media hyper-focusing on pet deaths while flying, these occasions are very rare. Pet travel by plan is generally quite safe.

What documents do I need for my pet to fly?

The documents needed vary by airline and destination. Some ask for nothing, while most require a health certificate.

Completed by a vet, this certificate states that your dog is healthy enough to fly and free of infectious diseases. Shot records may also be required, depending on the airline and destination. International flights generally have the strictest document requirements.

What are some of the new airline pet restrictions after the pandemic?

The pandemic greatly affected pet travel with employee shortages and an uptick in flight cancellations. In response, airlines have limited cargo shipment of animals, some have banned emotional support animals, and others increased fees for pets traveling in the cabin.

The CDC has also tightened the rules surrounding dogs coming to the United States , with new age, vaccination, microchipping, and location restrictions. This is in response to several rabies-infected dogs arriving in the U.S. during the pandemic.

Which airlines allow dogs on the plane?

Several airlines allow dogs to fly, including American Airlines, Delta, United Airlines, and JetBlue. However, airline canine travel rules vary, so always call ahead to ensure your pooch can take to the skies.

Does federal law allow dogs on airplanes?

Federal law leaves it up to airlines if pets are permitted to travel via cabin with passengers or as cargo. These restrictions do not apply to service animals. Federal law states that service animals are allowed in the cabin of any airplane and aren’t subject to carrier or health certificate requirements. There’s also no limit on the number of service animals on a flight.

Can my dog sit on my lap during a flight?

Probably not. Most airlines require dogs to stay kenneled in an airline-approved pet carrier and under the seat in front of you for the flight duration. This keeps you, your pet, and other passengers safe in case of turbulence and other airtime events.

Can pets fly alone?

Maybe. Some airlines allow pets to fly alone while others do not. There are many pet transport services that can aid in canine travel if you can’t travel with them.

What is the best airline for traveling with a pet?

Our top pick for the best airline to travel with a pet is JSX. Since the flights are semi-private and you can take any sized dog onto the plane without a crate, it’s the ideal flying experience for you and your pooch. The only downside is that there aren’t many flight destinations, and the tickets can be pricey.

Have you flown with your dog? Did you fly with any of the airlines on our list or another? Any tips for other travelers with pups? Share your experiences with us. We’d love to hear!

How Crowd Sourced Flights Work

K9 JETS provides an on-demand public charter service.

Simply book a seat for yourself and your four-legged friend at a fixed cost, which is payable by wire or credit card.

Each route is made up of an outward-bound flight and a return flight.

Your flight will be confirmed once the 75% passenger and pet threshold is reached for the full route. We will keep you updated on the status of your flight(s) on a regular basis.

If your flight and the linked flight do not reach the minimum threshold, we may cancel the flight(s). This would be (at the very latest) 28 days in advance of your flight and we would then offer you a 100% refund or re-accommodate you on a future flight. However, we do not anticipate the cancellation of flights as we have received an outstanding amount of interest in K9 JETS.

  • No cages required for dogs
  • Dogs can sit on your lap or by your side in the cabin
  • Cats must be in their carriers
  • No queues for customs or security
  • Complimentary bar and refreshments
  • Secure site to upload passport and pet documentation
  • 20 kg luggage & carry-on per passenger
  • One seat purchased entitles you to bring a maximum of two pets that weigh under 50lbs each, OR one pet that weighs over 51lbs. If you have two pets, that each weigh over 51lbs, you will need to purchase two seats. This is to ensure the comfort and safety of your pet onboard.
