Michael Vaughan slams ‘Bazball’ and seeks advice from Rishabh Pant for England’s Ashes Tour

' src=

Table of Contents

Former England captain Michael Vaughan sought advice from Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant on defeating Australia on their home grounds. Rishabh Pant suggested that cuts and pulls are more effective strategies than punching the ball due to the pitch conditions.

Rishabh Pant played a key role in India’s recent Test series victories against Australia in away conditions during the 2018-19 and 2020-21 tours. The Indian cricket team remains the last team to defeat Australia on their home soil, winning both series by a 2-1 margin.

During the 2018-19 tour, the Indian wicketkeeper batter scored 350 runs in 7 innings at an impressive average of 58.33, with his highest score being 159. Similarly, in the 2020-21 tour of Australia, he amassed 274 runs at an average of 68.50, including two half-centuries.

The 26-year-old batter played an unbeaten innings of 89 runs from 138 balls, featuring nine boundaries and a six. His crucial runs contributed to India’s historic victory at the Gabba in Brisbane in 2021, where the Indian cricket team breached Australia’s fortress.

They Already Know What They Need To Do – Rishabh Pant

During a conversation on the Club Prairie Fire podcast with Adam Gilchrist and Michael Vaughan ,  Rishabh Pant advised focusing on playing cut shots rather than punching the ball due to pitch conditions.

“They already know what they need to do. As a batsman, I would say a simple thing, instead of punching the ball, look to cut the ball. That’s what I would say (to England’s Bazballers). Because when you punch the ball there is more chances of you getting caught, or just getting out. Australia is the best place for cuts and pulls. The fuller ball will not disturb you much. Mostly it’s going to be back of length. These guys bowl the fuller ball little wider off the off stump. In England, you can punch the ball in a better way,” Pant said.

England faced successive defeats in their last three Ashes tours to Australia, including a whitewash in 2013-14 and 0-4 losses in the subsequent series. The England national cricket team is scheduled to tour Australia again for a five-match red ball series in 2025-26.

Don’t Put Me In A Spot Like That – Rishabh Pant

Michael Vaughan jokingly suggested that Pant might be recruited by England’s coaching staff with his insightful advice, to which Pant responded by rejecting the idea, highlighting the potential awkwardness of such a situation.

Need A Little More Pace In Australian Conditions – Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant shared insights on taking 20 wickets in Australia, emphasizing the importance of pace in those conditions. He suggested that bowlers exceeding 140 kmph could make a significant impact on Australian pitches compared to those bowling at 130 kmph.

“You need a little more pace in Australian conditions. Balls in 130 kmph are the best for a batter in Australian conditions. If you have a more than 140 kmph bowler, that makes a lot of difference,” Pant further stated.

I just want to thank you again for the most fantastic time I had on your "Jumbo Jolly" tour of Sri Lanka. From the moment you picked me up at 2.20am with what would turn out to be the coldest Lion Lager in Sri Lanka, till I finished my tour after the Galle Test, I have never laughed, sweated, laughed, drank and sweated again with so many fantastic people. Neil Linklater - First Cricket Tour Sri Lanka 2011
As we travelled across Sri Lanka with as many as 80 Flaggers, it was always a fun and friendly environment to be in with many Flaggers on their 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th trip. This in itself is a testament to Luke and the exceptional experience he provides. Sandi & Cris King - First Cricket Tour West Indies 2008
We considered that tour (India) was extremely well organised with great accommodation and for a very reasonable price so we booked on the next tour to Sri Lanka. Again the hotels were perfect and sensational meals included. A great benefit of touring with Luke is the flexible schedule so everyone can design there own tour within other travel if desired. Bernie O'Connor - First Cricket Tour India 2008
We found Luke on the web and started enquiring about tours to the West Indies. After that, every contact we had with Luke before and during the tour left us smiling or laughing. They are a great crew that set the tone right from the start. If you want to see international cricket with fellow cricket fans at a very reasonable price, we could not recommend  The Flag  more highly. Emma Cross & Michael Snowden - First Experience 2008
My three 'Flag' experiences have been tremendous, the quality pre tour information has been first class - it tells you exactly what to expect with no surprises. The optional extras are first class and take account of the local culture - I've safaried, climbed ancient Forts, watched a beauty contest in a Shebang, been to a Zulu village and experienced the Townships of South Africa. The Flag experience is a friendly and quality operation.  Paul McHugh - First Cricket Tour South Africa 2002

Green to prioritise red-ball for India Test battle

Cam-Green

A stint in the Sheffield Shield before the NZ tour proved the perfect preparation for Australia's No.4

Cameron Green is likely to prioritise red-ball cricket for Western Australia ahead of limited-overs internationals at the start of the next Australian summer to ensure he has the best possible preparation for the heavyweight Test battle against India.

Despite his all-round skills set being in demand for all formats, selectors opted not to include Green in recent T20I series against West Indies and New Zealand and instead earmarked him for WA's Marsh Sheffield Shield fixture against Tasmania in Hobart.

The 24-year-old duly peeled off an unbeaten 103 in that game , which proved an ideal warm-up for the ensuing first Test against NZ on a similarly bowler-friendly surface at Wellington's Basin Reserve where he was named player of the match for his career-high 174no in his team's thumping win.

Green's day: Allrounder reaches century in final over

The success of that template, coupled with the manner in which Green has adapted to his promotion to number four in the Test batting order, has the men's team brains trust thinking another stint in Shield cricket might prove the best lead-in to Australia's next Test assignment.

As such, coach Andrew McDonald has flagged Green could be rested from scheduled ODIs and T20Is against Pakistan that will kick off the men's 2024-25 international home season, with an eye to the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign to follow.

Australia have not beaten India in a Test series for a decade, which includes India's past two visits to Australia in 2018-19 and 2020-21.

"He's become an all-three format player and we thought his greatest challenge was flipping between the formats," McDonald said of his increasingly vital all-round asset.

"We felt that by keeping Cam in one format for a period of time gave him the best chance, and that won't always be the case with everyone.

"Other players can go (more readily) from one-day international cricket into Test cricket, and it's probably the more experienced players who have done it over a period of time.

"It's a big decision to leave anyone out of international cricket when they're potentially in the best eleven, so I'm glad he embraced that when we had that conversation with him, and the return on it is pretty immediate.

"The next stress point on that will be next summer, leading into the Indian Test series where we've got Pakistan in ODI cricket and T20 cricket.

"I'd like to probably err on the side of preparing him through red-ball – we know how good a white-ball player he is, so you put a priority on what it looks like next summer.

"The white-ball cricket's important, but geez that Test summer's important, so I think with the results he's had (at Wellington) he'll probably come to us and say 'can you give us a couple of Shield games before the first Test against India?'."

The opportunity to have international players find red-ball form in the domestic first-class competition is a luxury that New Zealand coach Gary Stead has eyed enviously.

With NZ's equivalent Plunket Shield competition in hiatus from mid-November until late February as domestic white-ball competitions are played, the Black Caps' capacity to readily replace injured players with those showing first-class form has been sorely tested.

"None of our cricketers have been in a first-class game, unless they've been in a Test match, since November," Stead said today in confirming opener Devon Conway (fractured thumb) and young pace bowler Will O'Rourke (hamstring) were unavailable for the second Test starting Friday.

"I would love, as national coach, to see us play some Plunket Shield prior to going into Test matches.

"It's something that's high on my agenda, to try and get New Zealand Cricket to keep thinking about the structure of our season."

Green's importance to Australia's Test planning is underscored by the reshuffle of the batting line-up in the wake of David Warner's retirement, with Steve Smith elevated to opener, and Green slotted into Smith's number four role.

And even though Australia are also preparing for a T20 World Cup later this year, for which Green remains in the selection mix, it was deemed more valuable for him to play Shield cricket than in recent T20Is given he will be exposed to plenty of 20-over cricket in his upcoming IPL stint.

Green's match-winning knock at the Basin Reserve – more than doubling the next-highest individual score on a challenging pitch – provided vindication for the radical reshuffle of the batting line-up, and underscored why he is held in such esteem by the game's shrewdest judges.

greenNZ-bP

The rationale for Green's re-inclusion, after he had been squeezed from his previous number six berth by fellow allrounder Mitchell Marsh's irresistible form, was simply that selectors wanted the nation's best six batters in the starting XI.

"His preferred position, as we've seen in Shield cricket, is number four and we think he can be a long-term option there," McDonald said today.

"This is a big step towards that.

"The conversations are that he's a quality player, and the statistics that everyone was looking at early in his (international) career probably didn't reflect the player that was in front of us.

"I think we've seen a snapshot of that now, and the public has been able to see what we've seen over a period of time."

McDonald also pointed out the template applied to Green, having him turn out for a Shield match as preparation for the two-Test Qantas Tour of NZ, reflects what is best in that specific circumstance and will not necessarily apply to other players in a similar position.

That can be seen by Australia opener and reigning ICC Test Player of the Year Usman Khawaja's decision not to play in Queensland's recent Shield encounter against South Australia, where national teammates Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey were involved.

After Green with 174no and 34, Khawaja was the only other Australia batter to pass 25 in each innings of the opening Test with scores of 33 and 28 against the new ball on the bouncy Basin deck.

By contrast, Labuschagne (1 and 2) and Carey (10 and 3) struggled against NZ despite returning significant scores in their preceding Shield appearance for Queensland and SA respectively.

Test skipper Pat Cummins dismissed any suggestions Labuschagne's position in the team was in doubt despite his run of four consecutive single-figure scores, and that view was endorsed by McDonald who saw encouraging signs in the right-hander's brief stay in the second innings at Wellington.

Despite being caught down the leg side from the 13th delivery he faced, Labuschagne had shown positive intent after the loss of opener Smith in the first over which the men's team coach regards as a benchmark of the former world number one's batting.

McDonald confirmed that Labuschagne knows he can perform better and is working hard to pull himself out of his current lean spell, but played down worries over failures by the team's top six to reach a collective return of 200 in their past five innings completed Test innings.

"I don't think there's any great concern from our point of view, in terms of we want the top six or seven batters to be performing as a collective," McDonald said.

Batting has 'left the door ajar' too often: McDonald

"So while the rest are performing around that and you're winning games of cricket, the concern levels are fractionally lower.

"Over time there's going to be some ebbs and flows in your career and I thought in the second innings … the intent and the energy he (Labuschagne) brought to the crease – and it was only two runs, so I don't want to get carried away – but that's what we see when he's at his best.

"We saw that at Sydney (against Pakistan) in the second innings, we saw that at Manchester (in last year's Ashes) where he had the intent to score and put it back on the bowler.

"Sometimes the conditions don't allow that, and you have to absorb a little bit more.

"But sometimes he under-values, even in difficult conditions, when he's showing that intent how much pressure he can put back on to the bowling unit of the opponent."

240302 New Zealand v Australia T1D3 wrap

McDonald acknowledged Carey's near identical dismissals in both innings at Wellington – driving away from his body and holing out to a catcher at extra cover – provided a point of reflection.

He noted the second innings method against the Black Caps' part-time off-spinner Glenn Phillips was one the Australia keeper might look back on with some regret, but the left-hander was not being judged overly harshly in the wake of the team's 172-run win at the Basin.

"They're going on at the moment," McDonald said when asked if conversations were being had about Carey's couple of batting lapses.

"He's disappointed with that as a method to Glenn Phillips.

"He's encouraged himself to play off the back foot, it's an error in judgement.

"We're not going to hang him on one or two innings, over a period of time we'll see how that plays out."

SRH Speedstar Umran Malik To Tour Australia For Border-Gavaskar Trophy Later This Year

Umran Malik will turn up for SRH this IPL 2024 season (AP)

Tearaway Indian fast bowler Umran Malik has been prioritized as one of the likely candidates to tour Australia later this year for the upcoming edition of the high-octane Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The 24-year-old was even handed a fast-bowling contract by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) late last month.

Malik recently featured in five Ranji Trophy matches for the Jammu and Kashmir team, where he managed to claim just four wickets across five innings.

Umran Malik potentially fast-tracked for AUS tour

Even though Umran Malik is yet to become a coherent fit in the Indian cricket team, the speedster is being prioritized as one of the potential candidates to tour Australia for India’s impending five-match Test series later this year.

'Biggest Advantage Is Pace, But…' - RP Singh Points Out a Loophole in Umran Malik

Malik’s ability to generate sheer pace and bounce might assist him on bouncy Australian tracks, where Team India will be fighting for crucial WTC points, and will also be defending their reigning Border-Gavaskar title.

As per reports, national selectors advised Jammu and Kashmir set up to offer the youngster some considerable playing time this Ranji Trophy 2024 season. As per a Hindustan Times report, a BCCI official recently stated that the board is hoping for the speedster to keep up with his sheer pace while bowling longer spells in red-ball cricket.

As of now, Umran Malik is slated to reprise his role for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchise in the upcoming IPL 2024 season . The Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler was retained by the SRH management back in November 2023 during the IPL 2024 retention phase, even though he returned with underwhelming bowling figures last year.

Malik, however, enjoyed a breakthrough IPL 2022 season for the ‘Orange Army’, snapping 22 wickets from just 14 games all while hurling down some of the fastest deliveries of the tournament with utmost ease.

Yashasvi Jaiswal scored over 700 runs during the recent India-England Test series to win player-of-the-series award.

A host of young India stars produced exceptional performances in the recent home Test series against England with Yashasvi Jaiswal bagging player-of-the-series award for a stunning show. Jaiswal accumulated a record 712 runs from nine innings to finish as the leading run-getter of the five-match series.

Besides Jaiswal, the likes of Dhruv Jurel, Sarfaraz Khan, Akash Deep, Devdutt Padikkal and Rajat Patidar were given Test debuts. Barring Patidar, the other have shown early promise.

The players will be tested when they tour overseas and with Australia tour scheduled for later this year, it will be a big challenge for these youngsters (provided they make the cut) to build on the early start.

Former Australia spinner Brad Hogg feels the next generation of India Test players have shown they have the quality to excel at this level but it’s too early to make a judgment even if they end up failing for the first time on an overseas tour.

“They’re fine players, no doubt about that,” Hogg said of India youngsters on his YouTube channel. “It’s way too early to judge and let’s say Jaiswal comes here (Australia) and doesn’t have a good series. Even then, it’s too early to judge because he has just been exposed to it for the first time. When you start judging a player with the level that they’re at is the second time that they come over and play in those conditions. Have they adjusted? Have they found the answers for it? And that sets the chaff from the wheat.”

Jaiswal, 22, was ‘exceptional’ during against England, mixing caution with aggression but Hogg reckons he may have to modify his game when playing in Australia considering the pace and bounce that he will have to deal with.

“Jaiswal at the top of the order played exceptionally well. Now how is Jaiswal going to play here ( in Australia)? He’s going to have to change his game. Or if he’s going to be aggressive, he’s going to have a new range of shots to his repertoire. He’s going to be able to play the have to play the pull and hook shot a little differently than what he does over in India because of the extra pace and bounce. Instead of trying to hit it hard, he might just use the pace of it so that’s one thing that I’m interested in,” he said.

Hogg also revealed that he wanted to see how Sarfaraz fares against the fast bowlers and it appears the youngster has been working on his game.

Sarfaraz Khan, I was worried about him against fast bowling in this particular series. Some of the pull shots he was playing at the back end against some sheer pace shows me that he’s been working on his game and I’d be very interested on seeing how he goes in this IPL against a few quick bowlers who are going to test him with the short stuff,” Hogg said.

“I think he is just about ready to be able to take on an Australian pace attack here in Australia with some of the pull shots that he’s played. It’s good to see how these young players have worked on their game. Making fifty, making a hundred, double hundred in international cricket is no easy feat. These are high quality players,” he added.

Will Tim Southee captain New Zealand in Asia? Pacer remains unsure

New zealand vs australia: new zealand test captain, tim southee remained unsure if he would lead the blackcaps during their tour to the asian countries later this year..

Listen to Story

Tim Southee

  • Australia won the Test series against New Zealand 2-0
  • Australia registered a 3-wicket win over the hosts in the 2nd Test
  • Captain Tim Southee remained unsure if he would lead New Zealand during tour to Asia

New Zealand's Test captain, Tim Southee, remained unsure if he would lead the side during their upcoming tour to the Asian countries this year. New Zealand suffered a 3-wicket loss against Australia in the 2nd Test at Christchurch.

After the series loss, Southee's captaincy and his own form had come under scrutiny as the veteran bowler, who completed his 100th Test, managed to pick only 4 wickets in the series. The pacer remained uncertain if he would be leading the Blackcaps during their tours to Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and India. He mentioned about the change in their team's combinations with the spinners taking the centre stage in the sub-continent conditions. NZ vs AUS, 2nd Test Highlights

"We'll see," Southee said in the post-match press confererence.

"Obviously, if you go to Asia, the make-up of the side changes slightly with spin becoming the main threat in that part of the world. But we'll see when we get there. We'll deal with this tonight and look to move forward to what's to come," Southee said.

New Zealand continued their 13 years of winless streak in Tests against Australia as the visitors registered a 2-0 win . Australia claimed their 7th consecutive Test series win against the Blackcaps at their home. Southee admitted that Australia have been a tough side to beat as hosts as well as a touring nation. He also mentioned not being able to cash-in on the crucial moments in the game.

"They're a tough side to beat, not only in Australia, but when they travel as well. I think when you play the best you've got to be at your best for those periods, that little bit longer. We had moments throughout both Test matches where we could have been a little bit better at times and then things could have been slightly different," Southee said.

‘It doesn’t work’: Aussies urged to abandon Smith experiment as legend sends stern warning

Australia has been urged to abandon the Steve Smith experiment despite coach Andrew McDonald claiming criticism of the newly-converted opener was “harsh” and “unfair”.

Smith has averaged 28.50 since reinventing himself as an opener following David Warner’s Test retirement, passing 12 just twice in eight knocks since moving up the order.

He managed 51 runs at 12.75 during the recent Test tour of New Zealand.

“I don’t think it’s deserved,” McDonald said.

“He’ll be able to work through that. It’s a new challenge for him, it’s a new position.

“If you’re bringing in a new opener and you gave them four Test matches, and then said, ‘Okay, we’re going to shift that after four Test matches,’ would you think that’s fair or unfair?

“I think that’s reasonably unfair … for Test matches, this is still a rather small sample size.”

But with eight months until Australia’s next Test match until hosting India on home soil in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (late November), questions are being asked as to whether Australia should move on from Smith as an opener.

Veteran broadcaster Gerard Whateley told SEN that eight innings from Smith was a large enough sample size to prove the concept ‘doesn’t work’.

Steve Smith struggled in New Zealand.

“I feel passionately that the top six in that order is not my batting line-up for the first Test against India,” Whateley said on SEN.

“It’s no longer a small sample size. There is enough to judge. In that configuration, it lacks chemistry and it lacks runs and I don’t think Australia would get away with it against India.

“I would undo everything they’ve done. This was never the selectors’ idea, it was never their way they were putting Smith up, it was Smith volunteering … we’ve seen it, it doesn’t work.”

His suggestion was not to abandon the selectors’ ideal on basing an order around including the nations’ best batters – but instead to look to reshuffle the pack.

“I would go back to the original concept,” Whateley added.

“We need the Dave Warner replacement at the top of the order for the chemistry and dynamic, and that player is in the top six.

“It’s Travis Head, who is now totally out of form at (number) five.”

“If you want to hold to your top six of your six best batters in the country – and they are resolute on that front – I would have Head open with Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne at three, Smith at four, Cameron Green at five and Mitch Marsh at six. I think that makes much more sense than what they’re doing at the moment.”

Whateley added that the Smith move up the order would be ‘easily undone’ given the plan was first floated by the batter himself rather than the selectors.

“The total get out is it was never their idea,” he said.

“It was never the selectors’ plan to do this, so it’s easily undone. It’s much easier to undo than stubbornly stick with.”

It comes after legendary former Australian opener Matthew Hayden declared he wanted a specialist opener in the position – and warned that having Smith and Khawaja together leaves Australia vulnerable when the pair retire.

“I want an opener in there,” Hayden told the Willow Talk podcast.

“Why I suppose I’m protective of the spot is because I love the theory or the principle that Australian cricket has worked on. And that is that you promote people where they’re working towards playing for Australia, their states are working towards playing for Australia. Otherwise it unintentionally belittles the whole set-up of cricket in this country and the pathways.

“Now I’m not suggesting that’s what they’re doing, because they rightfully said ‘we just want to pick our top seven batters’. Well fair enough.

“You can’t argue with Steve Smith being one of those. You can’t argue with him batting in a position which is outside his natural game. He averages 64 batting four.”

He added: “For me, it’s not so much the decision now, it’s the decision when two positions get extricated – that’s going to be Usman Khawaja in the next few years and that’s going to be Steve Smith. Then all of a sudden you have to rebuild!”

Hayden in January also told the Sydney Morning Herald : “I just can’t see how strategically that [Smith opening] is going to work for Cricket Australia. They will need someone more concrete than that. When you look at the success over the last two years of this Test team, it’s been based on a very solid foundation.

“It’s been such a key structure – that number one to four set in stone has been gold for Cricket Australia.”
