The Best Day Trips from Krabi, Thailand

Within a day of Krabi are idyllic islands and magnificent canals

Krabi has some of the finest beaches in the world, but you’re mistaken if you think that’s all there is to it. From stunning natural pools to adventures through mangrove forests, there’s a host of adventures just waiting to be taken. Here are some of the best in this South Thailand province.

You can now book and travel with Culture Trip to Krabi and all the beautiful islands and beaches beyond. Led by a local insider, our 10-day tour of Southern Thailand ensures nothing is missed.

Four-Island Tour

culture trip krabi

Few leave Krabi without taking in the sights of the Four Island tour, and it’s easy to see why. For just a few hundred baht, you can take a wooden long-tail boat and head for the beautiful islands of Koh Poda, Koh Tub, Chicken Island and the bay of Railay. It’s possible to charter a private boat or even a speedboat, which is a much better experience as it would grant extra time at any of the locations. Koh Poda, Koh Tub and Railay offer the chance to relax on the beach and take a dip in the sea, while Chicken Island provides great views and an opportunity to snorkel among colourful fish.

Heading to Phi Phi is a great day trip. Not only does the main island have gorgeous beaches of azure water and powdery sand; it’s also home to Maya Bay, arguably the most beautiful location in all of south-east Asia . Typical tours will also take you to monkey beach – where you can make a bunch of furry friends – and Piley Bay, a stunning spot with huge limestone mountains and clear waters. The small size of Phi Phi means there are no cars or motorbikes on the island. Plus, it’s possible to cover the whole island in just a couple of hours.

Hong Island

culture trip krabi

Just a 45-minute long-tail boat ride from Ao Nang (or 25 minutes on a speedboat) is the wondrous Hong Island. Hong is famed for the large lagoon in the centre of it, beset on all sides by imposingly beautiful cliffs. There are beaches around the lagoon and on the outer rim of the island, but the real beauty comes from kayaking into the lagoon itself, all while being dwarfed by the mountains around the edge. If you’re lucky, you may also catch sight of a monkey or monitor lizard.

Emerald Pool and Hot Springs

culture trip krabi

Only 70km (43mi) from Krabi Town are the hot springs. With water warmed by volcanic chambers deep down below, they provide the opportunity to bathe in warm waters between 35 and 42 degrees Celsius. It can get pretty hot, but not to worry; there’s a river to cool off in. Nearby is the popular Emerald Pool, a freshwater pool with a shockingly emerald hue that’s incredibly pleasant to swim in. After a sweaty walk through the hot, thick jungle, it’s a great way to cool off and get in touch with nature, all while taking in the beauty of the surroundings. Make sure to visit early to avoid crowds and schoolchildren.

culture trip krabi

Undoubtedly the best place for diving in Krabi Province, Koh Rok is just a one-hour speedboat trip away from Koh Lanta island. Diving in Koh Rok is like experiencing a whole new world, unearthing treasures such as colourful corals and an abundance of marine life. That includes turtles, eels and maybe even the odd black-tipped shark. It’s also possible to snorkel rather than dive, or just enjoy the beach and the fine, soft sand. Koh Rock is also the best place in Krabi to spot monitor lizards, who often just laze on the beach without a care in the world.

Ao Thalane Mangrove Kayaking

culture trip krabi

The best spot in Krabi Province for kayaking, Ao Thalane is a short drive from Ao Nang. It’s home to a winding maze of mangrove trees, which can be explored through kayaking on the river. It’s a humbling, peaceful experience, and the odd glimpses of monkeys and crustaceans on the branches add some extra excitement. Kayaking is a sustainable way to see more of Krabi Province and is one of the last truly undeveloped tourist attractions around.

Tha Pon Khlong Song Nam (Two-Water Canal)

culture trip krabi

The Two-Water Canal is just 34km (21mi) from Krabi Town yet so few foreigners make it here. The name is derived from the fact that saltwater and freshwater meet here, the result being glass-like clear water that you can kayak and swim in. It even turns emerald-coloured during high tide. The surrounding nature is a mixture of banyan and mangrove trees that you can walk between. This is a location that’s as undeveloped and naturally beautiful as you are likely to encounter in such a tourist-heavy province.

Krabi Itinerary – What To Do In Krabi In 4 Days

Krabi itinerary explaining what to do in Krabi in 4 days

After exploring the rich cultural heritage of Thailand, all you want to do is go island hopping . And Krabi gives you the perfect opportunity to do just that. Krabi is the main town in Krabi province, located on the west coast of southern Thailand. I spent 4 days in Krabi and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. In this post, I’ll be sharing with you the best Krabi itinerary explaining what to do in Krabi in 4 days.

Where To Stay In Krabi

Before discussing the Krabi itinerary, let’s first check out the accommodation options in Krabi. Here are some of my personal recommendations-

  • In Klong Muang – Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra. Check out the property here.
  • In Ao Nang – Pakasai Resort . Check out the property here.
  • In Railay – Railay Village Resort.   Check out the property here.
  • In Krabi Town – Family Tree Hotel. Check out the property here.

Krabi Itinerary – 4 Days In Krabi

There’s a lot to see in Krabi – be it the picturesque islands or the buzzing Krabi town. So here’s a day by day description of the Krabi itinerary explaining the best things to do in Krabi.

Krabi Itinerary Day 1:

Take a day trip from krabi to phi phi island by speedboat.

Start your Krabi itinerary by taking a relaxing day trip from Krabi to Phi Phi island by speedboat. The day trip also involves visiting several other surrounding islands and beaches which are equally as beautiful as Phi Phi island.

The day trip from Krabi to Phi Phi island starts from the Nopparat Thara Pier at Ao Nang beach

First, you are transferred from your hotel to the Nopparat Thara Pier at Ao Nang beach. Here, you meet the boat crew who explain you the do’s and don’ts of the trip.

Hop on a speed-boat as you begin the day trip from Krabi to Phi Phi island.

Hop on a speedboat and start your journey cruising towards the Phi Phi islands.

A view of the first snorkelling and swimming stop - Bamboo Island

Visit the beautiful Bamboo island and relax at the beach which is probably one of the best in my opinion. Enjoy swimming and snorkelling in the lovely warm waters.

Meet the monkeys at the Monkey Beach

Meet your monkey friends at Monkey Beach. It is touristy but worth it with the stunning jungle backdrop.

Watch the ancient paintings and nests of the swift bird at the limestone cave called Viking Cave

Visit a large limestone cave called the Viking Cave where you can see ancient paintings and nests of the swift bird. Apparently, the bird’s nest forms the main ingredient in Chinese soup, so it’s extremely valuable and a kilo costs somewhere between 3000-4000 USD!!

Swim and snorkel at the paradisiacal Pileh lagoon

Swim and Snorkel in the clear blue waters of the Pileh lagoon (Pileh bay) exploring the exquisite marine life.

A view of the Maya Bay

Get to see the world-famous Maya Bay along the way but don’t expect to stop there as it’s been indefinitely closed by the Thai government. This has been done in order to conserve the coral reefs & help them replenish themselves from the damage inflicted by overtourism .

Have lunch and shop at the Phi Phi Cliff Beach Resort at Phi Phi island

Enjoy a delicious buffet lunch at Arida restaurant in the Phi Phi Cliff Beach resort at Koh Phi Phi Don. For vegetarians, there’s a vegetarian buffet available as well. You can shop for some local merchandise from the big store at the Cliff Beach resort.

Stunning views of the Phi Phi island

Get your feet to taste a bit of the white sand and walk along the island path of Ton Sai at Phi Phi soaking in the mesmerising views of the Phi Phi island.

Snorkel in the waters of Ya Wa Sam island and enjoy watching coral reefs with the highest biodiversity of species. And finally head back to Ao Nang beach.

A full day speedboat trip is the perfect way to explore the popular Phi Phi islands

A full day speedboat trip is the perfect way to explore the popular Phi Phi islands. The tour includes your lunch, fruits, soft drinks, life jacket, snorkelling equipment, an English speaking guide, insurance & hotel transfers.

—-> You can book your Phi Phi islands full day speedboat trip here.

If you don’t prefer a day trip but want to travel from Krabi to Phi Phi by ferry, then click here to see the ferry schedules and book a ferry to Phi Phi island according to your convenience.

Watch The Sunset At The Ao Nang Beach

Post the day trip, Ao Nang beach is the perfect spot to witness a glorious sunset.

Sunset at Ao Nang beach

See the sun melt into the sky painting it in the loveliest of shades as you walk around and explore the Ao Nang beach. It can get a bit busy but then it’s lively vibe will have you wanting more.

Explore The Ao Nang Night Market

Wondering what to do in Krabi at night? Well, don’t worry because there’s plenty to do! Enjoy a relaxed vibe with some local food, drinks and music at the Ao Nang night market.

There are food stalls for you to relish tasty Thai food and sip a drink. There’s limited vegetarian food on offer with cheesy french fries being my favourite. Do try the fresh fruits, coconut water and smoothies.

The ambience is pleasant with music playing throughout the market. And good deals on local Chang/Tiger beer make the music even more enjoyable. You’ll find a few vendors selling souvenirs as well.

Enjoy The Nightlife At Ao Nang

Head to the Soi RCA aka the Party Street and drink the night away at the 12 bars that the street hosts. Socialise with the locals and enjoy your beers and cocktails in this neon-lit street.

It’s not a hip, loud place with people going bonkers. It’s a street with bars playing mellow music where you can savour your drinks in a relaxed atmosphere. Exploring the unique bars and their ambience is another activity you can do in Krabi at night.

Krabi Itinerary Day 2:

Take a day trip from krabi to phang nga bay exploring james bond and hong islands.

Get ready to go island hopping from Krabi to two blockbuster islands – Hong and James Bond as you set out from Krabi to Phang Nga Bay on a speedboat. It’s an 8 hour day trip so basically, you’ll be chilling at these islands the whole day.

Ao Thalane pier - departure point for the day trip from Krabi to Hong island and James Bond island

Your day trip begins with a transfer from your hotel in Krabi to Ao Thalane pier where your driver-guide awaits you. It’s sort of an exclusive day trip as they generally allow only 7-8 people on a speedboat.

Enjoy cruising in the sea passing by hundreds of rocky limestone outcrops.

Start your journey and enjoy cruising in the sea passing by hundreds of rocky limestone outcrops.

The scenic Khao Phing Kan also known as James Bond island

Stop at the picturesque Khao Phing Kan or the James Bond island for an hour and a half.

Enjoy exploring the natural cave at James Bond island

Explore the island and it’s stunning natural caves.

Dad and I giving the 007 pose because James Bond island

Take a dip in the waters and swim or like me, just give a stereotypical pose with the James Bond island in the background.

A line of shops at the James Bond Island

Don’t forget to check out a line of shops on the island to buy some cheap souvenirs from.

Kayak at the Thalu island

Head to Thalu island where you have a guided kayaking option (if booked accordingly).

Have a buffet lunch at a muslim fishing village called Panyee island

Have a sumptuous buffet lunch at a muslim fishing village called the Panyee island (Koh Panyee). You have a vegetarian buffet option as well (mail your preference to the tour company a day prior to the tour).

You can shop at the store inside the lunch complex at Panyee island

Get to terms with the local culture and shop at the stores inside your lunch complex at Panyee.

Me loving the exclusivity at the Hong island lagoon

Visit the Hong Island lagoon and admire the breathtaking views around you. Take a dip in the shallow warm waters and swim in the lagoon. Since it’s less visited, you might have the lagoon all to yourself.

The absolutely smashing Hong Island in Krabi

Stop at the absolutely smashing Hong island for about 4 hours and get to see sights like these!

Rocky outcrops guarding the beach at Hong island

The island makes for a picture postcard view as the surrounding rocky outcrop almost guards the beach.

Clean white sands and pristine blue waters are a common sight at the Hong Island

Sand at the beach is white and soft & water’s a pristine blue with turquoise shades visible from a distance. Hong Island’s my favourite destination in the Krabi itinerary

Swim, snorkel and kayak to your heart’s content in the clear waters of Hong island. There’s washrooms, a cafe and even a small walking trail behind the beach if you’re feeling adventurous.

See the sun cast a beautiful shadow on the Hong island

See the sun cast a beautiful shadow on the idyllic Hong island. Finally, head back to Ao Thalane Pier in the evening to end the day trip.

The day trip from Krabi to James Bond island and Hong island is a must do for every traveller

You rarely get a day trip that gives you a combined Hong island & a James Bond island tour by speedboat. And that’s the reason why this day trip is included in my ultimate Krabi itinerary.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at both the islands and highly recommend this island hopping day trip.

—-> Click here to book your full day trip from Krabi to James Bond and Hong islands.

Experience The Magical Sunset At Klong Muang Beach

After getting transferred to your hotel, ask your hotel reception to arrange a taxi for you to Klong Muang beach. It’s right opposite the luxurious Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra Golf And Spa Resort.

The best part is that not many people know about this hidden gem in Krabi. And how can I say that? Because I went there twice to enjoy the most stunning sunset and there wasn’t a single soul on the entire beach. The beach is clean, peaceful, and a perfect relaxation spot after your day trip.

Romantic sunset at the Klong Muang beach

Small waves gently hitting the shore with soft white sands and a sunset that resembles a painting are reasons enough to visit this tranquil place. Enjoy strolling along the beach and relish the most surreal looking sunset view in front of your eyes.

Do Some Street Shopping At Klong Muang

The night market at Klong Muang is the right place for some retail therapy. Klong Muang has cute little stores for you to buy some quality stuff for cheap. Here you can buy things like clothes, hats, handbags, wallets, watches, sarongs, souvenirs etc at a reasonably low price.

Remember the golden rule of bargaining politely with a smile. It works at all the outlets. Street shopping is one of the most exciting and fun things to do in Krabi at night.

Have a Meal At Little Jamaica

After you’re done with all the walking along the beach and the night market, park your tired legs at this place called “Little Jamaica”. It’s situated bang opposite Pelican Centara Bay Hotel. You also have access to the place from the Klong Muang beach.

Little Jamaica is a reggae bar with a Caribbean swagger and authenticity to it. The bar is made of recycled material and all it’s staff members can be seen in stylish dreadlocks. The place not only has great seafood but plenty of vegetarian options right from club sandwiches to authentic Thai food.

You also have the option to do hookah over here, sitting near the campfire. Do visit this place and have a meal here if you’re in Krabi.

Krabi Itinerary Day 3:

Climb 1237 stairs to get to the tiger cave temple.

Yes, you read that right. Your third day in the Krabi itinerary begins with a 1,237 step stairway to the summit of the temple.

Golden Buddha statue at the summit of the Tiger Cave temple in Krabi

Tiger Cave temple, also known as Wat Tham Suea, is a Buddhist temple.

Monk praying inside the Tiger Cave temple in Krabi

It is famous for the golden Buddha statue at the summit and the tiger paw prints in the caves as it’s name suggests.

  • Remember to carry water with you as you’ll need it during the climb with the sun getting a bit harsh. Carrying an energy bar or bananas won’t hurt either.
  • Also, wear comfortable sports shoes for the climb. Women need to cover their knees and shoulders so dress appropriately.
  • Post completion of your climb, at the top you’ll see a golden Buddha statue along with panoramic views of Krabi rainforests. It’s worth the climb just for the views. It takes 50-60 minutes on an average to climb up the stairs and 20 minutes to walk back down.
  • You’ll encounter plenty of monkeys so stay aware and don’t put your items – food or other valuables on display. There are caves around the temple where you can see tiger paw prints on stone.
  • Entry to the temple is free.
  • Try coming here early morning around 9:30-10am, as there’s less crowd and climbing’s easier when the sun isn’t too harsh.
  • It’s economical to take a round-trip minivan to the temple compared to a private taxi as the latter’s more expensive.

Go On a Krabi Sunset Cruise

The Krabi Sunset Cruise was by far my best offbeat day trip experience in the Krabi itinerary and one that I can’t recommend enough!

Krabi Sunset cruise involves cruising on a pirate style ship

In this day trip, you enjoy a ripper of a sunset and explore several islands off the coast of Railay in a “Pirates of the Caribbean” style Pirate ship.

Departure point for the Krabi sunset cruise at the Railay beach

You are picked from the departure points at both Ao Nang (Phra Nang Inn Hotel by Vacation Village) and Railay (Railay beach).

After which, it’s an absolute party. The two guides for the trip – Charlie and Michael are absolute sweethearts. They introduce themselves to you personally and make you feel comfortable on the cruise irrespective of your age or nationality.

Once the guides Michael and Charlie make you comfortable, you feel at home on the cruise

You are provided complimentary water, soft drinks, lemonade, juices, coffee, hot chocolate on board. You pay for the beer, wine, cocktails and other alcoholic drinks (which again are pretty cheap). There’s a separate washroom behind the bar as well.

You don’t have to worry if you can’t swim or snorkel as the guides along with their crew provide all the personal assistance and safety equipment to ensure you have a good time.

You get to snorkel around many beautiful islands with the Chicken Island being one of them

Enjoy swimming and snorkelling at various points in Ya Wa Sam island, Poda island, Chicken island, Si and Ta Ming islands. They stop at the best spots near islands for you to explore the amazing marine life.

There are two person kayaks on the ship as well if you wish to kayak

You also have 4 stand up paddle-boards and 2 person kayaks available on the ship.

Me posing as a pirate while the sun sets over the Andaman sea

Witness the majestic sun setting over the Andaman sea. Don’t forget to get your pictures clicked with Pirate attire and props. They email you the pictures and videos post the trip. After experiencing a surreal sunset, you enjoy a Thai style buffet. Vegetarian options are available on request at the time of booking.

They even give you complimentary drinks for jumping from the deck of the ship or doing a backflip (*wink wink*).

The Krabi Sunset Cruise ends with you getting a chance to experience bioluminescence underwater. In this, you get to swim in the waters next to Pranang Beach after dark as the ship crew throws light on the spots where you can witness bioluminescence.

Post this you’re dropped back to the departure points at Railay and Ao Nang.

Krabi Sunset Cruise undoubtedly deserves a place in the Ultimate Krabi itinerary

The Krabi Sunset Cruise without a doubt is the best experience you can have in Krabi. Hence it occupies a spot in my ultimate Krabi itinerary.

Have a Royal Vegetarian/Vegan Dinner At Govinda’s Restaurant

If you want to enjoy top quality vegetarian/vegan Indian food, then head to Govinda’s restaurant. The staff is warm and friendly. And the vegetarian buffet dinner they have is one of the best in Krabi.

Tasty food with lots of variety, authentic and fresh ingredients, amazing decor, clean and extremely well-maintained restaurant and a Jain style food menu (without any onion and garlic) are some of the highlights of this place. Do try their vegetarian lasagna. It packs some delightful flavours!

Wareerak Hot Spring Retreat in Krabi

You are picked up from your hotel by the tour operator Trip Store Krabi. And post a 1 hour 30 minute comfortable minivan journey, you finally reach the Wareerak Hot Spring Retreat.

The staff serves you a welcome drink and gives a brief summary of the things included in the treatment. You’re given loose comfortable clothing to change into and then made to do a few warm-up exercises to get the blood circulation going.

The treatment involves yoga, body scrub, hydrotherapy, neck & shoulder massage, herbal shower and full body Thai massage.

Then begins your treatment which involves yoga, body scrub, hydrotherapy, neck & shoulder massage, herbal shower and full body Thai massage.

The Hot Spring Pools help you relax, removing all the soreness from your body.

The Hot Spring Pools help you relax and drain all the tiredness and soreness from your body.

Enjoy an organic Thai lunch in a cute little hut

Post the herbal shower you head for lunch in a cute little cottage in the middle of a forest. They serve you an authentic Thai style buffet lunch. Vegetarian options are available on request. All the food and drinks are made from organic ingredients grown within the local garden itself.

An interesting Thai handicraft session follows, in which they teach you to make flowers and bouquets out of tree leaves.

Last part of the treatment is a one hour Thai massage in the lap of nature

The last part of the treatment is a 1-hour full body Thai massage in a small hut. The masseurs are skillful and literally put you to sleep with their healing touch. The massage revitalizes you and the peaceful ambience only adds to the whole experience.

The Thai Spa and treatment at the Wareerak Hot Springs Retreat is an offbeat activity and a must-do in your Krabi itinerary. The centre has both – the half day and the full day options available but I’d recommend the full day option to enjoy a more wholesome experience.

Krabi is a province in southern Thailand hosting all the usual gems you’d expect.

From the beautiful beaches, pristine water, coral reefs, waterfalls, and epic caves to get lost in.

Krabi is a dramatic combination of landscapes. From a mountainous mainland surrounded by the drop-dead gorgeous Andaman Sea . It’s a 130-island-strong archipelago. Go rock climbing in the morning and relax on the sand afterward.

Krabi’s beaches are more beautiful than Koh Samui and Koh Phangan in the region of Surat Thani. And it’s way less touristy than the more famous Phuket . Railay Beach and Ao Nang Beach are famous!

If you’ve been losing your mind in Bangkok, head down south to Krabi for your dose of rejuvenating time and exploration.

It has some of the busiest party islands like Koh Phi Phi, but also some off-the-beaten-track places.

For those looking for something a little more chill, it’s a perfect place for relaxation and recreation.

There’s a little bit of everything here – from water sports to buzzing nightlife. On land, you can find tropical temples and Buddhist caves, and a wealth of delicious cuisines to tuck into.

From the hot springs of Thung Teao Forest Natural Park to the rock climbing cliffs of Railay Beach, to the white sand of Phra Nang Beach, there is no shortage of adventure opportunities.

After adventuring in nature, get a Thai massage, taste local cuisine at a night market, or hang out in Ao Nang or Krabi Town.

From the culture, to the nature, to the most welcoming of locals, it’s obvious why Krabi’s at the top of travellers’ must-visit destinations in Thailand .

Krabi White Sand Beaches

Krabi is one of the most relaxing places ever and once you get there you’ll see exactly why. It can’t help it, being home to 130 beautiful islands.

One of the most epic things about Krabi is that many of its isolated beaches are accessible only by boat!

Hop on a famous colourful long tail boat to reach some of Thailand’s most secluded paradise islands and beaches on an island tour.

The most famous tour is called the Four Island Tour which takes you along the Krabi coastline to Railay Beach, Tub Island, Chicken Island, and Poda Island. Some tours also stop at Phra Nang Beach which has caves and cliffs.

You can book the island tour through many agencies, and they usually include pick up from your accommodation in Ao Nang or Krabi town.

The island tour is a full-day adventure, usually running from about 8am to 4pm. Tours range in price from 600-800 baht, depending on the quality of the vessel and buffet and the National Park fee usually isn’t included (400/200 baht per adult/child).

You never know the quality you’re going to get from these agencies though. If you want a guaranteed good experience, book online through the Klook website .

BONUS –  Booking ahead of time ensures you won’t miss out on the tour, and get the best price too! And just for NOMADasaurus readers, if you use the Klook discount code  “NOMADS10”  on the website when checking out, you’ll get $10 off your first booking!

Koh Phi Phi probably rings a bell! It was made famous by Leonardo’s stunning performance in the movie ‘The Beach’, so it’s one of Thailand’s most famous spots.

It’s actually a small archipelago of six islands though, not just one! And no list of the top Krabi attractions would be complete without mentioning it.

Koh Phi Phi Leh is the second largest island and is home to just one beach – Maya Bay. This is the famed stretch of white sand that Leo hung out at!

Unfortunately, the beach closed indefinitely to tourists following environmental damages.

It’s the main reason people used to visit the island – but it’s also home to the Viking Cave.

The cave has some cool ancient paintings of Scandanavian drakkars , although no one knows exactly how ancient they are.

The caves are now used to demonstrate how to collect swift’s nests. It’s all very eclectic. If you fancy checking it out, it’s up in the northeast of the island.

You can get there in half an hour on long-tail boat from Tonsai Bay which is the main pier for the islands.

If you want to make friends, get yourself to Koh Phi Phi Don. It’s the only island in the little archipelago that people live on.

It’s pretty mainstream now with many bars and clubs – let’s just say there’s plenty to do and many people to make friends with here!

Tonsai Village is the liveliest part which you can head to for a party! There’s enough going on here to keep the biggest of party animals amused.

Long Beach is nearby, but a little more tranquil. If you want super laid back, then Phi Phi East coast is where you should head.

You can get to Koh Phi Phi by ferry or speedboat. The ferry takes about two hours from Phuket (Rassada Pier) and an hour and a half from Krabi (Klong Jirad Pier) or Koh Lanta.

Koh Phi Phi Viewpoint

For a more laid back island getaway, head to Koh Lanta. It seems to attract a lot of backpackers, peace seekers, and solo travellers – and for good reason!

It’s a lot bigger than Koh Phi Phi, so it has many more beaches and inland areas to explore. It’s got waterfalls and a national park and something like 30km of sunbathing-worthy sand to hit up.

It’s pretty hippy – comparable to Indonesia’s Gili Air vs. Gili Trawangan kind of thing.

Koh Lanta has managed to avoid too much overdevelopment similar to the likes of Koh Samui, which makes it one of our top recommendations for places to visit in Krabi.

There are at least fewer of the skyrise mega-hotels and ugly condos, rather it’s peppered with traditional bungalows.

Koh Lanta is actually one of our favourite places in Thailand to rent a bungalow and kick back for a week at a time! Don’t miss it!

But it’s still got plenty of places to wine and dine yourself. Fear not – Koh Lanta has lots of fun bars, restaurants, and spots to get souvenirs.

Hippie bars and picturesque sunsets are not in short stock here. Charm and convenience – Koh Lanta’s got the lot.

The island is 27km long, so it’s a good spot to rent a moped so you can whiz around and explore all the secluded beaches with some independence.

Long Beach is the longest beach on the island (it really does what it says on the tin)!

It’s beautiful and next to all the action, where some of the coolest restaurants are.

Head south, and you’ll hit Beautiful Beach and Relax Bay. Two awesome spots to do some serious chilling!

Check out Sala Dan and Lanta Old Town for some local culture. There are many teakwood shophouses towering over the water on stilts which have many lovely little cafes and shops.

You could spend weeks here without realising it’s been more than a few days!

Koh Lanta Beaches

Krabi is peppered with white sand beaches of the softest purest sand you’ll find in Asia – and even the world!

If you want a base for beach-related adventures, Ao Nang is a place to start .

Ao Nang is one of the most popular places to go when you visit Krabi. It’s busy and touristy but it’s a start and it turns out lots of people love that vibe anyway! Ao Nang Beach itself is a popular spot in Krabi as well.

There are a ton of bars and restaurants and you can sign up for many tours and dive trips from Ao Nang.

Minutes away you can find Nopparat Thara beach and Railay Beach. You can only reach Krabi’s gorgeous renowned Railay Beach by boat from Ao Nang Beach. Boats go every hour and only take 15 minutes.

Railay Beach has lovely serene neighbourhoods and glorious warm water. The jungle lined beaches attract all sorts of monkeys and rock climbers!

Phra Nang Beach is super remote with more famous limestone cliffs and caves. You can only reach Phra Nang Beach by long tail boat from Ao Nang.

Snorkel to discover some of Thailand’s epic marine life or go scuba diving from one of the dive centres here. If you’re into water sports, rent a kayak for some picturesque activities!

Koh Hong is another secluded beach reachable by boat from Ao Nang. The beautiful Koh Hong is part of Than Bok Khorani national park and is surrounded by forest.

If you’re up for something more resort-y, head to Klong Muang.

No matter what beach vibe you’re in the market for – there are a few to explore in the vicinity.

Krabi Snorkelling

Whatever islands and beaches you go to, be sure to take a dip in the glorious Andaman Sea. Rent a snorkel and fins or try scuba diving in Thailand – it’s famous for being one of the top things to do in Krabi for a reason!

The water is warm and it’s as blue as can be. You could see some inspiring marine life too!

If you want to try your hand at scuba diving – you’re in for a treat. Ao Nang Islands is one of the best places to give it a go. It’s one of Krabi’s most famous dive areas with awesome things to see.

It’s great for beginners as well as advanced divers. In Koh Yawabon there’s even an awesome cave system that experienced divers can explore.

You can go with a bunch of different dive shops. The price for two dives is usually between 2700-3200 baht.

Ao Nang Islands isn’t the only place you should go and blow bubbles at though! Krabi is home to many awesome dive sites.

From Koh Lanta, you can get to Koh Haa Yai which has an epic underwater cave system.

There’s one called The Cathedral which is 20 meters deep and a thrill to swim through. This isn’t for the faint-hearted though – beginners beware.

In the My Koh Lanta Marine Park, you can go to Hin Daeng (AKA Red Rock) which is your best bet of getting to fly around with majestic manta rays! There’s nothing more epic than seeing a manta for the first time. They’re unbelievably huge and so graceful – it’s a humbling experience.

If you want to swim with the friendliest sharks in the ocean, get in the water in Krabi. It’s home to Leopard, Bamboo, and Blacktip reef sharks.

From Koh Phi Phi you can hop on a dive trip to Shark Point which is a must visit! There’s also The King Cruise site which has a shallow wreck which means even beginners can go.

For the more adventurous out there, hop on a liveaboard dive trip to the Similan Islands !

There are four-day tours starting from Khao Lak – followed by epic diving in the most remote sites in Thailand. Cruises can be a little pricier, from nearer 11,000 baht, and they run from November to May.

Around Krabi, you could see schooling barracuda and big grouper fish. And of course, the usual colourful fish that frequent reefs, and maybe even lobster!

If you’re big into scuba diving and a bit of a macro geek – you can also find nudibranchs, seahorses, shrimp and even ghost pipefish around these waters. Get in there!

For more great diving opportunities in Thailand be sure to check out diving in Koh Tao !

The natural beauty of Krabi is truly one of its most attractive features. The jagged soaring limestone islands stand dramatically out of the picture-perfect blue ocean. All lined with glorious white sand beaches.

There are sheer limestone cliffs and dramatic waterfalls. Krabi has a slice of nature for everyone to get their teeth into!

Climbers from all over the world are attracted to the quintessential geological features of Krabi’s limestone peaks. The area has some of the world’s top rock climbing.

The karsts are challenging and many people agree it’s worth the trip to test yourself on Krabi’s rock climbing spots!

Millennia of chemical erosion led to these idyllic islands – hop on a cruise to Koh Poda to see some secret spots.

Railay Beach is one of the best spots to go rock climbing in the world. From the beaches there are rock climbing routes for all experience levels.

Routes in other locations can be accessed via a walk through the jungle or by abseiling over the sea. Not a bad way to start a day of rock climbing.

You can find instructors, equipment rental and guides all over the area as rock climbing is very popular – there are plenty of adventure agencies where you can sign up .

Rock Climbing Walls Krabi

You can mountain bike to Huay Toh Waterfall and explore Thailand by horseback.

Hire a fishing boat to cruise around Krabi’s islands, explore the jungle, or take a tour of the mangrove swamps.

There are hundreds of reasons to get outdoors in Krabi.

Grab a mountain bike from Krabi Mountain Biking on Chaofa road down by the river.

You can cruise around to Huay Toh Waterfall, the Tiger Cave Temple, the Emerald Pool and Hot Springs as well as a bunch of other temples and caves.

On Koh Lanta you can ride horses from Khlong Nin Beach and explore the gorgeous landscapes of Krabi Thailand from a different vantage point to normal.

There are horses available for beginners as well as advanced riders and those who want to get their thrills from a faster ride!

If you fancy a spot of fishing, you’re in the right place. Deep-sea fishing in Krabi is renowned for a reason.

There’s Tuna, Mackerel, Giant Trevally, and Barracuda, to name a few! These trips are usually reserved for the hardcore and will require stamina and skill – some of the fish are pretty big old things.

Thailand is famous for its gorgeous jungles – and it’s definitely worth getting deep inside them and having a look around.

One awesome viewpoint is Khao Ngon Nak Viewpoint. You can hike up here on a pretty exciting trail. And the best thing about it, it’s free!

There’s a 4km trail up to a viewpoint worth climbing for. It’s absolutely epic and something to behold for the photographers out there! On the way, you pass picturesque scenes too so keep your eyes peeled, always.

Krabi Park Waterfall

Explore all terrains on ATVs, or quad bikes. You can pick up a rental which is about 2000 baht per hour in Ao Nang, and charge around to explore the best things to do in Krabi!

A lot of the roads you can cruise around are standard roads but you can go through plantations too.

If you want to go off the beaten track, you can take a tour through Nai Sa with a guide . This gets you a bit more off-road and gives you a more authentic experience of the Thai countryside which is pretty epic.

Before you go, always check the condition of the quaddies, as it’s not uncommon for them to be in poor condition if they’ve been driven to the ground by inexperienced drivers who wear down the gears and brakes.

It’s always better to be safe than sorry. And helmets are for the win – just in case!

Kayaking in Krabi, especially along the serene Klong Root Water Canal, offers an enchanting experience where the natural beauty of Thailand truly comes alive.

Paddling through this tranquil waterway, kayakers are enveloped by lush, verdant jungle and towering limestone cliffs that epitomise Krabi’s unique landscape.

This journey through Klong Root is not just a physical activity, but a peaceful escape from the busyness of downtown Krabi, allowing one to connect deeply with the natural world.

Here, away from the bustle of tourist spots, you can witness the untouched beauty of Thailand, occasionally spotting wildlife like exotic birds or playful monkeys in their natural habitat.

It’s an immersive experience that blends adventure with tranquility, making it a must-do for any visitor to Krabi.

Krabi’s capital, inventively named Krabi Town, is quite beautiful in itself.

Krabi Town is a major hub for many travellers as it acts as a throughflow point to other islands and mainland beaches. But it’s worth a mosey around!

Krabi Town is a mish-mash of fresh and funky bars and restaurants. The retro markets have some of the best local curries you can find.

There are even some cultural attractions that shouldn’t be missed .

Best of all, it’s surrounded by seductive mangrove forests, swamps, and rivers. Plus impressive limestone cliffs and of course, the dreamy turquoise sea.

Krabi Town is much less tacky compared with nearby Ao Nang. Although its traveller/backpacker area has expanded so it has many cafes, hostels, and fancy hotels.

Gentrification has certainly occurred here but Krabi town has kept its lovely locals and lively town aura.

Get a Thai massage, browse the shops, try a cooking class, or just wander around and get lost.

Hit it up in April during Thai New Year for a cultural adventure you won’t forget! Songkran is a three-day festival that is unlike any other new year celebration in the world.

Gorgeous Krabi Views

Krabi Town has a fab lively night market from 5-10pm Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Head to Thanon Khon Dern AKA the Walking Street to check out over 50 stalls selling everything from street food to clothes, and just about any products you can imagine.

Wander around and appreciate the beauty of locally made pearl jewellery and other souvenirs.

It would be rude not to sample some of the local cuisines from street vendors while you’re at the market in Krabi Town.

You can get anything from grilled satay to barbecue fish and fried squid eggs.

There are many cakes and sweets AKA kanom in Thai which are definitely worth sampling through the night. The sticky rice and mango is to die for!

The prices here are cheaper than most markets in Krabi town. It’s still worth bargaining though, and a smile goes a long way when it comes to that!

Considering it’s such a small market, it brings in a pretty big, lively crowd which is a testament to its awesomeness. It’s a great way to get an insight into life in southern Thailand.

To get the most out of your night market visit, consider booking a guided tour .

You might think it’s a bit overkill, but having a local with you will allow you to get a way deeper understanding of how the markets work, and you can try some real local food that isn’t just pad thai and satay chicken.

If you fancy some tropical temples then check out the Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi Town.

It’s a few minutes drive from the town centre – be prepared to climb though!

At the top of 1,247 steps, you’ll find an epic view and a golden Buddha nestled in a beautiful forest. It’ll take what breath you have left away.

It’s named Wat Tham Suea in Thai after the tiger paw prints which were once found in the temple.

The legend is that a tiger used to enter the cave while Abbot Luang Por Chamnean Srilasatheto was meditating, but the tiger did not harm him.

Don’t worry – it doesn’t seem like there are many tigers around there these days! The Tiger Cave Temple is now a famous meditation centre. Nuns and monks retreat here from all over Thailand.

You can get there via an arranged tour via an agent , or grab yourself a taxi or rent a moped and go on your own accord.

As seems to be the case in Thailand, there’s plenty of nightlife on offer in the Krabi Province! If you really want to party, there are DJs busting decks all night in Ao Nang Beach!

For the early evening, the Last Cafe has some delightful sandwiches and chilled beers.

Amy’s Bar has got the tunes, bevvies, and snacks to keep you going all night.

There’s also Ao Nang Centre Point – a huge three-story complex that has late-night dining, night markets and venues to keep you entertained late into the night.

Klong Thom Hot Springs are an hour from Krabi Town, and they’re some of the best hot springs in the area. Find some serenity under the canopy of the rainforest and soak until you shrivel.

It’s situated near the Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve and the Thung Teao Forest Natural Park – and is home to Mother Nature’s self-made hot tubs, known to Thai locals as nam tok drawn.

The appealing hot water comes from thermal springs, heated by volcanic chambers deep underground. Thank you, world!

The Klong Thom hot springs are sort of bathtubs, naturally hollowed out in lovely smooth stone, and full to the brim with spring water at 35-42 degrees celsius. It’s almost perfect!

There’s even a cool river running not too far away, in case you fancy a refreshing cool down after the hot springs.

If you fancy something a bit less rustic, they’ve created some man-made pools because the site was becoming so popular. There are even changing facilities. Ideal!

To avoid crowds, hit it up before 10am or after 4pm. There’s Krabi Hot Springs and Saline Hot Spring which is smaller and more local. It’s only 90 baht to enter – so join in and bathe away.

The Famous Crab Sculptures In Krabi.

If you walk a kilometre from the Krabi Hot Springs you’ll get to the Insta-perfect Emerald Pool. The water is clear as crystal and totally worth heading there early for!

If you appreciate nature and like a little hike on some decent trails, you’ll be rewarded at the end with the stunning pool, which is a little hidden away in the jungle.

You can explore a whole network of trails through the Thung Teao Forest Natural Park to get to the pool. The longest trail is 1.2km with no climbing – so it’s fairly accessible to most.

On the journey, you’ll pass loads of streams, waterfalls, and mini pools. There are many gorgeous tropical trees and flora which will keep your eyes pleased for the whole walk, especially if you’re a nature lover.

Entrance to the Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve and Emerald Pool is 200 baht. For both the hot springs and the pools, you can go on a guided tour , or rent mopeds and cruise around by yourself for some independent exploration.

Krabi Travel Guide

Now that you know all the great things to do in Krabi, here’s our guide to help you get here.

How to Get to Krabi Thailand

It may seem like a tropical paradise in the middle of nowhere, but it’s very easy to visit Krabi!

Flying into Krabi is as easy as pie. Krabi International Airport is 15 kilometres from the town centre. International and domestic flights operate daily from major cities.

Four countries fly directly to Krabi: Singapore, Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Qatar (Doha) and many cities in China.

Within Thailand, you can fly from Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, and of course, Bangkok. You can book flights from all locations easily online!

Bussing around Krabi couldn’t be easier. Hop on the bus from Bangkok at Borommaratchachonnani Road – it’ll cost you about 620-970 baht for the ten or so hour journey.

Other main places you can bus from in Thailand are Trang (129 baht), Phuket (155 baht) Hat Yai (234 baht).

You don’t usually need to book ahead unless it’s a Thai public holiday. You can choose to get air-conditioned, deluxe and luxury coaches depending on your budget.

There are also tourist buses which can pick you up from your hostel/hotel. It’s best to contact a local agency to arrange these.

You can visit Krabi all year round, but it’s best to head over when humidity is at its lowest to avoid sweating through too many of your t-shirts!

There are three seasons when it comes down to it.

Peak season is from October to March when it’s ‘hot’.

It’s hotter in the rainy low season from June to October .

The hottest time of year during their summer season is March to June .

During the low season, Krabi is perfect for backpackers! Accommodation can drop to a very affordable $5/night.

Although the price to pay is the chance of monsoon rains hitting hard for up to a week, and certainly no guarantee of sunbathing weather!

Humidity is high and temperatures usually hang around 25-30 degrees celsius. Many ferry routes are substantially less frequent but it’s cheap as chips.

In the high season, prices jump and accommodation gets booked up. Perfect temperatures, blue skies, and ideal water conditions attract tourists from every corner of the world.

So it’s best to plan as much as you can if you want to visit from October to March.

The fresh natural water will do wonders for your skin and all the steamy air will help to remove toxins from your body. This is fun and healing all in a gorgeous rainforest setting, and it’s a great way to relax when backpacking through Thailand!

Insider Tip: Be sure to keep your eyes out for some rare birds that can be spotted in Krabi: Gurneys, Finfoots, Big Winged Brown Kingfishers, Bitterns, Herons and more!

  • An ancient beach full of unbelievable natural wonders!
  • The tourists don’t often come here, so you’ll miss the crowds.
  • Entrance fee is 400 ($12,54)

Susan Hoi is not only a fascinating beach, but is the home to an incredible amount of  SEA crustacean shells and fossils. Due to the unusual landscape of the beach, it has been dubbed the Fossil Beach. Be prepared to have your mind blown by the ancient remains of the ocean’s creatures and the now dried up plates of what used to be a swamp.

The Susan Hoi site is found within the Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park and captivates people worldwide who know about its existence. There are said to be only two other places like it in the whole world! The fossils date back to forty million years ago, making this one of the most outstanding places to add onto our three-day itinerary in Krabi.

Susan Hoi, Krabi

Susan Hoi once used to be a thriving large freshwater swamp, hosting an immense amount of creatures and critters within its banks and surrounding vegetation. Once the swamp dried out, the layers of shells that were left behind created huge rock slabs. These rock slabs are now humorously called “shelly limestone,” and they rest on layers of lignite .

The unique beauty of one of the most gorgeous Krabi landmarks is unforgetable and will surely have you thinking about what life on earth could have been like 40 million years ago.

Krabi Night Market

  • The entrance to the market is free!
  • No Krabi trip itinerary would be complete without the famous Krabi night market!
  • This is a must-see place if you are spending the Weekend in Krabi, as it is hosted on every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night.

The world-famous Krabi Night Market is an incredible mass of color, textures, smell, and contagious energy all laid out under an open night sky! The stalls are set for as far as the eye can see and can all be found along Krabi’s Walking Street (Otherwise known in Thai to be Thanon Khon Dern ).

Krabi Night Market, Krabi

The Krabi Nightmarket is by far the most important shopping experiences to have during your Krabi vacation! Over 50 stalls get put up, and you will find everything from street food and clothing to culinary items and home decor. The store holders are friendly and very well organized, so you won’t have to deal with bad service. Just be prepared for the noise, as this is a place that truly showcases the confident and boisterous nature of the Thai people.

You will be surprised by what you may come across, and you are sure to be somewhat charmed by the way that the locals put together this event.

Phra Nang Cave Beach

  • This beautiful beach is found in Ao Nang.
  • You can easily find resorts and hostels nearby that would make for the best place to stay in Krabi.
  • Entrance onto the beach is free!

Soak up the warm sunshine and laze on the white sands of Phra Nang beach! Not only is the beach a blissful paradise, surrounded by swaying palm trees and wild vegetation, but it is also home to a fascinating cave. Enjoy one of the most gorgeous beaches on our Krabi Itinerary!

When planning a trip to Krabi, it is important to make a note of the best beaches, and this is certainly one of them! You can escape into the eerie and yet curious cave of the sea princess in Krabi and witness the way that the locals pray and worship her. There is a shrine where you will find countless incense sticks, photos and spiritual paraphernalia that has all been placed in her honor!

If you’d like to visit Phra Nang Cave Beach by boat, check out this speedboat tour .

  • An incredible island found near Krabi and accessible by ferry.
  • A place that has well preserved the old ways of Krabi, Thailand.
  • Entrance into the village is free!

Embark on a journey and humbly explore the old village of Koh Klang. The village is a mere 26 square-meters, and it is entirely made up of indigenous plant life, rivers, canals, mangrove forests, and peaceful beaches. The inhabitants of this island are natives, and they live in a way that has not been tainted by the west, maintaining their roots and keeping to the ways of the old.

The name Koh Klang means “middle island,” and it has been given this name because it is between two wide estuaries. On the east, you will find the Krabi River, where it will take you a short five-minute ferry ride to get back to Krabi.

Koh Klang, Krabi

Most tourists don’t go to Koh Klang. This is because it is native land and does not offer a lot in the way of mainstream tourism with no major attractions or must-see sites. The only exciting sightseeing wise will be of some amazing rural landscapes. However, it does offer something that other places in Krabi may not- an authentic looking glass into the ways of the ancient Thai natives.

The people of Koh Lang live simply as a way of life, and they enjoy the harmony and simplicity of it all. This is a wonderful way to appreciate other lifestyles, and broaden our understanding of cultures and people.

Mu Ko Lanta National Park

  • The Mu Ko Lanta National Park is a huge part of Krabi’s nature conservation!
  • The park was established in 1990, so it is relatively new.
  • Entrance fee is 200 ($6,26) for adults and 100 ($3,13) for children

Mu Ko Lanta National Park consists of several gorgeous Thai islands! The park boasts rugged hills that roll over the Andaman sea, covered in thriving plant life and providing spellbinding views.

You can venture into the dense rainforests and discover the neverending bliss of Krabi’s vegetation, breathing in air that is thick with life and an earthy scent. You can even find massive mangrove forests, as the Mai Ngam, South Mai Ngam, and Ngu islands are absolutely covered in them!

Mu Ko Lanta National Park, Krabi

Taking a turn for the unusual, you may also come across nomadic sea gypsies called the Chao Le that live in the forests and islands of the national park. They are said to set boats adrift during the full moon of June and November, as it is a tradition of theirs to draw in good luck.

Mainly what you’ll find during your great adventure at Mu Ko Lanta National Park is outstanding and private white sand beaches, jaw-dropping viewpoints, hidden walking trails, and some incredibly impressive ancient caves.

Insider Tip: Like at the National Mosque, dress conservatively to skip the queues for robes.

The province of Krabi is renowned for being a safe place for both extensive and short visits. The locals are incredibly friendly, and most travelers don’t experience any kind of threats or mishap during their stay. With this in mind, we would still love to cover some safety tips in our Krabi itinerary to make sure that everything goes smoothly during your island adventure!

Pickpockets are all over the world, and Krabi is no exception. Be sure to watch your belongings and don’t let strangers get too friendly with you out of the blue. This should not be a major issue, but it is something to remember and stay cautious of.

Of course, behave sensibly when partying and when walking about at night. Keep friends and travel companions close when going places on foot at night, and stay away from suspicious alleyways.

Although crime happens everywhere, the main danger in Krabi doesn’t come from the people, but more from mother nature herself. Beach safety is something to be aware of, as the ocean can become rough during the monsoon season from May to October.

Otherwise, rip tides aren’t lethal but are better to be avoided. Remember to also be careful of mooring boats! Thankfully, Krabi’s marine life species aren’t poisonous, so there are no threats from the creatures of the sea.

Krabi Itinerary Pre-Travel Tips

Planning a trip to Krabi is relatively easy since the region is very tourist-friendly. Moreover, since Thailand is one of the cheapest countries in Asia , it’s a great destination for all kinds of travelers – whether you’re backpacking Thailand or visiting with friends or family.

However, Krabi covers quite a large area. As a consequence, there are a few things that you’ll need in place to guarantee a hassle-free Krabi vacation. Here are some travel tips and hacks to help you plan the perfect Krabi itinerary.

  • Search the  best hotels in Krabi . Krabi is quite a tourist hotspot, so rooms tend to fill up quickly. Make sure to book accommodation well in advance.  Also, expect steep prices during peak seasons.
  • If you’re traveling with lots of luggage, or not comfortable catching a bus from the airport,   booking a private transfer  is an excellent alternative.
  • Wifi is widely available at most tourist spots, restaurants, and hotels in Krabi. But if you prefer to have internet on the go, grabbing an eSIM is highly encouraged. By doing so, you’ll never have to worry about accessing maps, checking transport schedules, or planning your stops. Alternatively, pick up  pocket wifi while still in Bangkok .
  • Unfortunately, things can and do go wrong when you travel. Make sure you have travel insurance when visiting Thailand. I use SafetyWing .
  • If you aren’t comfortable navigating Krabi on your own, o r perhaps traveling in a group, this Krabi private custom tour   allows you to see all the highlights without the headache of planning out a trip.
  • While it’s great to discover all of Krabi’s best bits independently, having a travel guide handy is always a good idea. This Lonely Planet includes tons of valuable tips on traveling Thailand and was a lifesaver on my Krabi solo trip.

When to Visit Krabi, Thailand

South Thailand has two very distinctive seasons, a dry season and a wet season. The  best time to visit Krabi is during the dry season , which runs from  November  through  March . During this time, you can expect pleasant temperatures and sunny blue skies – perfect for a Krabi beach getaway.

Krabi’s off-season starts in April and runs through October . April is the hottest month in Krabi Province, and October sees the most rain during the year. Although it is possible to enjoy good weather during the wet season, frequent downpours aren’t uncommon.

How to Get to Krabi, Southern Thailand

Krabi is a vast province in Southern Thailand and includes several popular destinations stretched over land and sea. These include Krabi Town ,  Ao Nang ,  Koh Phi Phi , and  beautiful Koh Lanta , to name just a few.

Krabi International Airport is the main gateway to Krabi Province, and most likely the starting point of your Krabi itinerary. There are many daily flights from Bangkok to Krabi , as well as elsewhere in Thailand and Asia. If you haven’t booked a flight yet, Skyscanner is good place to compare airline prices and find cheap domestic or international flights. For those backpacking Thailand, this SEA transport guide includes lots of tips to help navigate your travels.

Once at the airport, it’s easy to access the rest of the province by land or sea. If you’re visiting the nearby islands or Railay Bay, you can take a ferry, speedboat, or long-tail boat to access them. Inland there is also an array of taxis, buses, tuk-tuks , and songthaews ready to transport you to all corners of Ao Nang and Krabi Town.

Joining a island hopping tour to Chicken Island is an excellent add-on to any Krabi travel itinerary.

How to Get to Your Destination From Krabi Airport

If this is your first visit to Krabi, I recommend basing yourself in Ao Nang or Railay. From here, it’s easy to explore the rest of Krabi Province and come face-to-face with some of Thailand’s best landmarks .

To get to  Ao Nang from the airport , it’s a good idea to  book a discounted transfer  in advance. Alternatively, take the  shuttle bus  (150 Baht) or order a  fixed-rate transfer  at the airport upon arrival (600 Baht).  Read my detailed guide on exactly how to get from Krabi Airport to Ao Nang for more tips.

The  fastest and easiest way to get to Railay  is to book a direct transfer with your hotel . Railay is c ompletely cut off by land, so it is slightly harder to get there . If you are traveling with lots of luggage , this will be the best way to get there. If that’s not an option, catch a long-tail boat to Railay at Ao Nang Private Boat Club  or  Ao Nam Mao Pier .

If you are headed to  Koh Lanta  or  Koh Phi Phi  directly from the airport and haven’t booked a transfer in advance, don’t worry. There are several stalls within the arrivals hall where you can quickly get this sorted out.

Taking a day trip to discover the best Islands near Krabi is a fun day out.

Ao Nang is a bustling little seaside town with plenty to entice travelers. Make sure to read my super detailed guide on top things to do in Ao Nang , as well as my guide on the best places to stay in Ao Nang on any budget.

The very first thing you’ll want to do after arriving at the airport is to catch the local airport shuttle bus (150 Thai Baht) or grab a   transfer (600 Thai Baht) to get to your accommodation in Ao Nang town stress-free. (Pre-book a  shared transfer  or a  private transfer  here).

Once you’ve settled in, it’s time to see what Ao Nang has on offer! Here are my top recommendations on what to do in Ao Nang on your first day in Krabi.

Head to the Beach

Ao Nang is blessed with an incredible laid-back vibe, a bustling nightlife scene, great food, and gorgeous beaches. While most travelers flock to  Ao Nang Beach  to enjoy the sand and sea, a short stroll further you’ll find  Nopparat Thara Beach .

Nopparat Thara is a great beach to chill for a few hours and the ideal spot if you want to get away from the crowds. The main road is lined with lots of cute beach bars and restaurants. So, if the heat gets too much for you or if you simply want to enjoy an ice-cold beer with a view, the options are endless!

Tranquil beach setting

Take a Sunset Cruise

Another fun thing to do in Ao Nang is to join a sunset cruise . It’s a great way to see Krabi’s spectacular coastline and scenery from the water while you sail past several of Krabi’s most famous islands. The best part? You can jump off the boat and discover the diverse underwater world along the way.

Snack Your Way Through the Night Market

After watching the epic sunset, it’s time to head to the Ao Nang Night Market to feast on incredible treats. While Ao Nang’s food market isn’t nearly as big as the  night market in Krabi Town , it is one of the most popular night markets in Krabi and should not be overlooked.

Ao Nang Night Market boasts a great selection of food, and you’ll find many vendors selling tasty Thai street food like pad Thai, Thai pancakes, sticky mango rice, fresh seafood, and all kinds of kebabs.

Ao Nang Night Market

Krabi Itinerary Day 2: Go Island Hopping

Krabi is blessed with 80 marvelous islands near its shores and, consequently, quite a hotspot for island hopping. That said, there are a few Krabi islands that you definitely shouldn’t miss on your Krabi 5 days itinerary.

While it’s possible to rent a long-tail boat for a day to explore Krabi at your leisure, the easiest way to discover Krabi’s gems are on an organized tour. Make sure also to read my detailed guide on the best islands near Krabi for more tips on which islands not to miss.

Hopping in a long-tail boat to explore the dreamy islands near Krabi's coastline should not be missed.

Krabi 4 Islands Tour

You can’t visit Krabi without adding an island hopping tour to your 5 day Krabi itinerary !

The  Krabi 4 Islands tour  is the perfect opportunity to see some of Thailand’s most dreamy islands. The tour stops at four islands, namely Phra Nang Cave, Koh Tup, Koh Poda and Chicken Island. It’s a fun day trip to take, and there are lots of opportunities to snorkel, swim, or lie under a coconut tree.

Taking this full day tour is a great way to see the best of the best and will allow you to maximize your time in Krabi.

Taking a Krabi 4 island day tour is a highlight on any 5 days in Krabi itinerary.

Hong Island Tour

Another excellent day tour, I highly recommend, is  spending a day at Hong Island . Besides the exquisite beaches, Hong Island boasts crystal clear turquoise water full of marine life. The best part, you don’t need to go very deep to see all kids of bright-colored fish dashing past you.

After you’ve explored the treasures below, make sure to take a hike through the island’s thick jungle or rent a kayak to explore the dreamy turquoise lagoon.

Exploring Krabi's diverse and tranquil coastline.

Krabi Itinerary Day 3: Explore Railay Beach

When spending time in Krabi, a visit to Railay Beach is a huge must! Revered for its gorgeous beaches, stunning craggy cliffs, countless adventure-filled activities, and chilled out vibes, Railay is the perfect add-on to any Krabi itinerary. It’s also the perfect spot to experience outdoor adventures in Thailand !

What really sets Railay Beach apart from other gems in Krabi is its location. Since Railay is completely cut-off by land access, you’ll need to catch a long-tail boat to get here. Luckily, Railay is only a 10-minute long-tail boat ride from Ao Nang, making it easy to access.

While Railay is relatively small, there’s also plenty to do and see. From rock climbing and kayaking to hiking, swimming in a secret lagoon and much more! Read my super detailed guide on the most unmissable things to do in Railay for more tips.

Railay Beach packs the perfect mix of outdoor fun, pristine beaches, and epic sunsets.

Krabi Itinerary Day 4: Head out to Koh Phi Phi

If you have 4 days in Krabi, you’ll have ample time to visit the dreamy Phi Phi islands . The islands are stunning and possibly the most beautiful islands in Asia !

If you just want to take it easy, head straight to the beach to enjoy the sand and sea. Many shops sell or rent snorkel gear, so it’s easy to explore the warm waters at your leisure. Afterward, kick back at one of the cute beach bars with a boozy cocktail as you wait for the epic sunset.

More adventurous travelers shouldn’t miss the chance to catch the epic sunset from the Phi Phi Viewpoint. It’s a short hike taking no longer than 30 minutes, but prepare to break a sweat. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded panoramic views over the islands, sea, and cliffs. It’s truly magical!

While it is possible to take a  day trip to Koh Phi Phi by speedboat , I suggest staying overnight or even longer if your Krabi itinerary is flexible.  By doing so, you can easily squeeze in a visit to the world-renowned Maya Bay, which was made famous by the movie “The Beach.” After being closed for several years for coral rehabilitation, Maya Bay opened back up to tourists in 2022. You can only visit on an  organized tour  now, and even though you can’t swim there anymore, it truly is one of the most beautiful places you’ll ever see in your life!

pileh lagoon Koh Phi Phi

Travel T ip:  If you’re visiting Koh Phi Phi during peak season, make sure to book accommodations well in advance. Koh Phi Phi is a popular destination, so hotels fill up rather quickly. I suggest staying somewhere central as some parts of the island is only accessible by a long-tail boat. The  Phi Phi Holiday Resort  is a great mid-range option, while  Phi Phi Coco Beach Resort   is an excellent choice if you’re looking for an upscale secluded stay.

Krabi Itinerary Day 5: Unwind and Soak up the Vibes

On the last day of your Krabi 5 day itinerary, reward yourself for getting through Krabi’s top attractions on this Krabi itinerary! Here are my recommendations on what to do in Krabi on day 5.

Join a Cooking Class

Start your morning by learning the ins and outs of Thai cooking!

Joining a cooking class in Krabi is a massive must while visiting Thailand, and also a fun way to master a new skill. During the cooking class, you’ll prepare seven local dishes of your choice and get lots of tips to take back home with you.  You’ll be surprised how easy it is to make Thai food, but don’t let that fool you, you’ll work up quite an appetite during this 3-hour cooking class !

Master the ins and outs of Thai cuisine by going a fun cooking class.

Soak in a Hot Spring

A great way to get away from the crowds is to head out to  Wareerak Hot Spring . Located near the Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve, this is the perfect place to spend your last day in Krabi. The springs are surrounded by lush jungle, making it an excellent place for nature seekers.

After a soak in the steamy pools, make sure to drop by the dreamy  Emerald Pool a bit further afield. It’s a short trek, and you’ll pass by gentle streams, waterfalls, and tropical plant life along the way.  If you still have energy, climb the 1,237 steps to the top of Tiger Cave Temple , where you’ll be rewarded with a bird’s-eye view over the Krabi basin.

Stopping by the Emerald Pool to explore Krabi's lush interior is a must-do on any Krabi itinerary.

Get a Thai Massage

No visit to Krabi, or Thailand, would be complete without experiencing a Thai massage.

Massage parlors are practically on every corner, so it’s really easy to find one. If you’re looking for something a bit more upscale, I suggest spending the afternoon at  Boossabakorn Spa  for a full pamper session.

What to Wear in Krabi: Krabi Packing List

Since the weather in Krabi is mostly hot and humid, it’s best to pack light, breathable clothes. Besides the usual beachwear like swimwear, t-shirts, shorts, light dresses, and skirts, it’s a good idea also to pack flip-flops, sunglasses, and a hat.

Here are a few more essentials to add to your Krabi packing list:

  • You’ll probably need a travel adapter for your visit to Krabi and the rest of Thailand.  This world travel adapter  is lightweight and covers more than 160 countries.
  • Since you’ll probably be spending lots of time near the water, keep your phone and belongings safe from getting wet. Make sure to grab  this waterproof cellphone case  and  this handy dry bag  to enjoy a stress-free Krabi itinerary.
  • You won’t have trouble finding sunscreen in Krabi, but since most of them aren’t always eco-friendly, it’s a good idea to bring your own.  This reef-safe sunscreen  doesn’t contain a whitening agent, and its the perfect choice for eco-friendly or vegan travelers.
  • Mosquitoes aren’t uncommon in Krabi, so make sure to pack DEET-free bug spray .
  • Make sure you pack a lightweight microfibre towel, like this Turkish beach towel that will dry quickly and won’t weigh you down.
  • The weather in Krabi can be somewhat unpredictable, especially during the wet season. Pack a  lightweight travel umbrella  that won’t weigh you down.
  • Don’t forget your camera! I never travel without my  Olympus Mirrorless Camera , but if you prefer something more lightweight, bring a GoPro Hero . Just a heads-up — most of the islands near Krabi do not allow the use of drones . Make sure you do proper research before flying a drone in Thailand.

Thailand boasts paradise beach settings lined with towering palm trees.

5 Days Krabi Itinerary Conclusion

A Guide To The Best Places To Visit In Krabi And Other Things To Do

A true gem in southern Thailand, Krabi is a place where lush green forests and pristine beaches meet the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea. This, combined with its rich cultural heritage, makes Krabi one of the best places to visit and indulge in various activities, including exploring ancient temples and kayaking through hidden caves.

So, embark on an adventure and fall in love with this charming destination, as we guide you through the unique and unforgettable experiences Krabi has to offer.

Best time to explore Krabi

Krabi has a tropical climate throughout the year, with two main seasons — the dry season, from December to April, and the wet season, from May to November. During the dry season, Krabi gets quite crowded as the weather is warm and sunny, which makes it the most popular time to visit. If you’re looking for a quieter trip, then the wet season is a suitable option, as it usually rains during the afternoons.

Best places to visit in Krabi

Also called Rai Leh, Railay beach includes three beaches and is often misunderstood as an island. Each of these beaches is known for its unique characteristics — on the north is Ton Sai Bay, which has amazing spots for rock climbing enthusiasts and affordable stays. On the west is Railay West known for its spectacular views at sunset. If you are an early riser and want to catch the sunrise instead, Railay East is your place to be. Phra Nang Beach is located between Railay East and West and is named after a cave with a sacred Buddha image. Though smaller than Railay East and West, Phranang Beach is the best spot if you plan on swimming in crystal-clear waters.

Railay beach is not accessible by road. You can take the long tail boats that frequently depart from Ao Nang.

Best Time to Visit Krabi

Krabi, located in southern Thailand, is a beautiful destination that welcomes visitors year-round. However, when it comes to deciding the best time to visit Krabi, there are factors worth considering. We believe that the perfect time for a visit would depend on your interests, budget, and tolerance for crowds.

If you enjoy warm and sunny weather, we recommend visiting Krabi between November and April. During this time, the rainfall is minimal, and the temperatures are moderate, making it perfect for exploring Krabi’s beautiful beaches and outdoor activities. However, keep in mind that this is the peak tourist season, and accommodation prices may run high.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for a budget-friendly trip and don’t mind a little rain, the monsoon season, which falls between May to October, is the best time to visit Krabi. The rainfall causes fewer crowds, bringing lower hotel prices and quieter attractions. Nevertheless, rough sea conditions may limit boat trips to islands and other attractions, to keep that in mind when planning your activities.

Overall, Krabi is a beautiful destination that offers plenty of opportunities to marvel at Thailand’s natural charm year-round. Whether you prefer sunny skies or are okay exploring attractions in the rain, there’s no wrong way to visit Krabi. We recommend considering the season, your budget, and your preferences before booking your adventure.

Getting to Krabi

As seasoned travelers know, getting around in a new city can be a challenge, which is why exploring Krabi can seem overwhelming at first. However, with a little bit of planning, getting to Krabi and moving around the city can be a breeze. Firstly, we recommend booking transportation in advance as it saves both time and money. Online booking sites offer a variety of options ranging from shared vans, private taxis, and even airport transfers.

If you’re on a tight budget, shared vans are a great way to save money while exploring Krabi. Not only are they affordable, but they also provide an opportunity to meet new people. Alternatively, private taxis offer a more personalized experience, giving you the freedom to select your own route and explore Krabi at your own pace. Regardless of which option you choose, it’s essential to negotiate the fare upfront to avoid any surprises.

Finally, navigating Krabi’s public transportation system can be an adventure in itself. The city is well-connected with a variety of options from tuk-tuks, songthaews, and motorbikes. While walking around is also an option, it’s important to keep in mind that Krabi is quite spread out, making it impossible to explore all of it on foot. Overall, with a little bit of preparation and a sense of adventure, getting around Krabi is a breeze, giving you more time and energy to indulge in the city’s natural beauty and rich culture.

Best things to do in Krabi

If you’re planning your first trip to Thailand, why not check out the best things to see and do in Krabi Province during your visit? Located on the Andaman coast of southern Thailand, Krabi is one of the most popular tourist destinations.

The whole area offers fabulous attractions, lazy beach times, exciting days of island hopping , and adrenaline-pumping activities like scuba diving, snorkelling, zip lining and rock climbing.

Inland, you can enjoy majestic temples, giant Buddhas, tropical forests , mouth-watering Thai cuisine, and the very best experiences for your holiday in Thailand.

Powdery white and gold sand beaches , swaying palms, blue seas and warm sunshine await along the coastal region.

Offshore, over 200 islands rise majestically from the blue waters covered in lush tropical foliage of every shade of green, while below the surf, coral reefs protect myriad species of marine life.

You will find souvenir shops, cafes, bars, restaurants, and daytime and evening markets serving locals and visitors in the towns and resorts along the coast.

For the party people, other things to do in Krabi include full-moon parties on the beaches, and bars and clubs that rock on ’til dawn.

In this article, to help with your bucket list must-dos, I highlight 25 of the best things to see and do in Krabi Province, stretching from the Khao Phanom Bencha National Park to the north of Krabi Town, to Noppharat Thara Beach in the west and Ao Nang resort to the south.

Table of Contents

1. Pay a visit to Krabi Town

Not as commercialised as many of Thailand’s large cities, Krabi Town is a working provincial capital with its own port, nearby International Airport, and excellent infrastructure to get you to the beaches and attractions you want to see in Krabi Province.

With fewer tourist numbers than the bigger resorts, the shops, cafes, restaurants, street-food carts, bars, and markets will keep you busy both day and night, and are excellent venues to soak up the culture and lifestyle of the Thai people.

It is as popular with day-trippers wanting to visit its numerous attractions as it is with those choosing to base themselves there.

2. Visit the Wat Kaew Korawaram Buddhist Temple

Located on a hillside on the edge of Krabi Town and accessed off the main Maharaj Road, the origins of the Wat Kaew Korawaram Temple date back to the mid-1880s.

Initially established by a small group of Buddhist monks and novices, it has grown into one of the largest and most important temples in the Krabi Province.

One of the striking differences between this temple and many others is the paint scheme of blue tiled roof and white walls , where the majority of temples have a colour scheme of red and gold.

The 2500 sqm terrace is reached by a wide, grandiose stairway lined with gold snake-like sculptures, while the ordination room has impressive wall paintings, Buddhist relics and a tall Buddha statue.

On the terrace, you will find food and drink stalls, Wat Kaew Holy Amulets and a souvenir shop. Opening hours to the temple are 10.00 to 17.00, and entry is free.

3. Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea)

Best things to see in Krabi: Wat Tham Seua

For those who love Asian religious architecture, another revered temple sits just five miles north of the town.

The Tiger Cave Temple is o ne of the most popular attractions to see in Krabi , with travelling time from the town about 15 minutes, or 30 minutes if you’re visiting from Ao Nang.

The beauty of this complex has to be seen to be believed. From the temple’s base, you can see numerous caves, small pagodas, tiger statues and small buddhas .

You can also see the beginning of the 1237 steps that must be climbed to reach the summit, and the stunning views across the forest canopy, and the small town of Wat Tham Suea.

It is a tough, tiring climb , and a bottle of water should be included in your bag. Also, make sure you have a tight grip on your bag, camera, hat and sunglasses, as marauding groups of Macaque monkeys are not averse to trying to relieve you of them.

Nonetheless, they make for some great photo opportunities.

Entrance to the complex is free, and open 24 hours a day, although visitors are asked to be down by dusk for safety reasons.

Recommended tour: Emerald Pool, Blue Pool and Tiger Cave Temple Tour

4. Enjoy Ao Nang both day and nighttime

Ao Nang is the most popular destination to stay in Krabi. Its ideal location makes it perfect for exploring the offshore islands, natural parks, and inland attractions.

Its beach is not as idyllic as Railay’s or neighbouring islands. Still, it is an excellent beach to relax or enjoy sunsets after a day of sightseeing. Also worth a visit are the adjacent Noppharat Thara Beach and Pai Plong Beach.

The latter beach can be reached by following the Monkey Trail, which runs along the coast through a wooded area and is home to a friendly community of monkeys.

Ao Nang is a very convenient base camp because it offers all the services you could wish for in addition to its location – many restaurants, bars, cafes, massage centres, Muay Thai gyms, etc.

In addition, at night, it also has a fun nightlife. It is nowhere near the same as Phuket or Koh Samui, but enough to have fun after dark. The most popular area is Center Point, with bars and even a cabaret.

Ao Nang is where I usually stay in Krabi when visiting the area. It makes a perfect camp base and is l ively enough to entertain you after a day of visiting or island hopping.

5. Take a dip in the Emerald Pool

Often included as part of a combined trip to the Tiger Cave and Krabi Hot Springs, the Emerald Pool excursion is much more than just a little wild swimming.

Situated in the Thung Teao Forest National Park, around fifty kilometres to the east of Krabi Town, the trip includes a visit to the Emerald Pool, short forest walks, a visit to the shrine of a long-passed hermit and a chance to see some Macaque monkeys.

Fed by underground streams high in calcium carbonate, a swim in the Emerald Pool is said to help provide certain health benefits similar to those found in other mineral baths around the world. The pool is about 20m round and 1.5 metres deep.

Swimming in the Emerald Pool is allowed from 8.30am to 4.30pm with a charge of 200 Baht.

6. Are you wondering what paradise looks like – Pay a visit to Railay Beach

Railay, Krabi

Sitting on the coast between Krabi and Ao Nong, Railay Beach is considered by many to be the prettiest beach in Thailand.

Access to the beach is only available by boat , and long tail ferries regularly operate from Krabi, Noppharat Thara and Ao Nang beaches, with direct routes to Railay.

With bright white sand glistening in the sunshine, long tail boats bobbing o n the azure blue seas, palm trees rustling along the beach line and limestone cliffs climbing skyward at each end, it is certainly one of the prettiest beaches to see in Krabi.

With a couple of bars and snack shacks along the beach, you can spend as much time as you like working on your tan. Or you can be a little more adventurous.

7. Relax with a bathe in Krabi’s Hot Springs

Often grouped together with organised trips to the Emerald Pool or jungle trekking, a short, twenty-minute walk through the forest will get you to Krabi Hot Springs.

Surrounded by lush, tropical jungle, the Blue Pool is a natural hot spring, with average temperatures of between 35 to 45 degrees Celsius. It is also the deepest pool, with an average depth of 4.5 metres.

A little further along the trail, you will find the Crystal Pool. As you would expect, the water is crystal clear. It is also the biggest of the pools at 45 metres long, 35 metres wide and averages 1.25 metres deep.

The site includes a café for snacks and drinks, changing rooms, and a chance to get close to the local forest life, including the mischievous Macaque monkeys.

Krabi Hot Springs is open from 08.30 to 18.00 every day. Entrance cost is 100 baht per adult, 60 baht per child and 30 baht for a car.

8. Book at least one boat trip during your stay in Krabi

One must see in Krabi is located 15 kilometres south of the town. A o Nang is the largest full-on tourist resort in Krabi Province .

It has everything the tourist might want to do in Krabi, including late-night partying, and in the high season, from the beginning of November through April, it is probably the busiest resort in the province.

I mention this because it is also the embarkation point for a large number of Krabi’s many fabulous boat trips. Many visitors choose this area purely because of the variety of stunning islands and beaches they can explore by boat.

You can enjoy casual long tail boat tours to different beaches. Or cruise serenely around numerous offshore islands. You can book specific speed boat trips to islands such as Phi Phi Don, Phi Phi Leh, Maya Bay or the Hong Islands.

You can book half-day morning or afternoon trips with lunch or tea included and swimming or snorkelling options. You can book to some of the best spots to watch the sunset, while you enjoy a romantic three-course meal and drinks.

Also, if you’re the active kind, you can enjoy a guided kayak tour of the caves or islands , or hire your own kayak.

Recommended tours:

  • 4 Islands Day Trip by Speedboat Including Lunch Box
  • 7 Islands Sunset Tour with BBQ Dinner and Snorkeling
  • Hong Islands Day Trip by Speedboat with Lunch
  • Private Luxury Longtail Boat Island Hopping Tour

9. A must do in Krabi Town is a visit to the Night Market

Krabi Market

Markets worldwide are renowned as places where visitors can get up close and personal with locals going about their daily lives. In Southeast Asia however, they take it to a whole new level.

One of my favourite places to visit, Krabi Night Market, began life some years ago as a small local produce market on the banks of the Pak Nam River.

So popular was it with the locals and an increasing number of visitors, that it was soon moved to a larger area behind the Vogue department store, and has since grown to take up three streets. Hence its local name, the Walking Market .

Although fresh local produce is still sold, you can browse countless stalls of both Western and traditional Thai apparel. Choose off-the-shelf goods and souvenirs, or ask for a unique memento that the artisan traders will make for you, from silk clothing and shoes, to bags, wood carvings and jewellery.

The aroma from the many street food stalls will soon have you drooling, so why not try a few Thai delicacies such as Tom Yum Soup (a peppery soup of shrimp, mushrooms, and lemongrass), Khao Man Gai (steamed chicken, rice and peppers) or Pad Thai (vegetables, peanuts and choice of meat).

If you’re feeling adventurous, check out the latest deep-fried insect dishes.

The market is open from 5.00pm to 10.00pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights , so why not enjoy the entertainment and round off a fabulous evening with a glass of wine on the terrace of a local bar?

10. Learn more about the culture and history of Krabi at the Andaman Cultural Center

If you have cultural interests and want to know more about the culture and history of Krabi, come to the Andaman Cultural Center in Krabi Town.

It is a small but modern, interactive and well-organized museum where you will learn about the history of the region, its culture, lifestyle and beliefs.

The museum exhibits local handicrafts, traditional costumes, tools and utensils, musical instruments, photographs, contemporary art and other cultural samples. You will also see displays of marine life, replicas of historical tools, pictures and other products.

This visit will take only a short time, but it is worth doing if you pass through Krabi Town.

11. If nature and hiking are your passions, pay a visit to Khao Phanom Bencha National Park

Located around 25 km north of Krabi Town , this National Park covers over 50 square kilometres of land split between three districts, and includes Krabi’s highest peak, the Khao Phanom Bencha, at 1,397 metres above sea level.

Park attractions include numerous hiking trails, the 80-metre-tall, five-cascade Huai To Falls , the three-cascade Huai Sakhe Falls near the entrance, and the Khao Pheung Cave with its stalagmites and stalactites.

Over 200 species of birds and wildlife also live in the park, including gibbons, black bears, clouded leopards and tapirs.

The park is open from 08.30 to 16.30, 365 days a year. The entrance fee is 100 baht per adult and 50 baht for children 3 years to 14 years. Hire cars and scooters are charged 30 baht.

For those who prefer to make it up as they go along, a limited number of chalets in the park can be booked for overnight stays.

12. Check out the Monument of Black Crabs along the Pak Nam River

Best things to see in Krabi: Crab Statue

If you’re in Krabi and killing time between excursions, consider a walk along the banks of the Pak Nam River.

With the recently constructed promenade, the walkway is a popular gathering spot for families and young Thais, especially on weekends and public holidays, and is a great venue to sit quietly with a drink and watch the world go by.

As you stroll the banks you will se e plenty of long tail fishing boats, water taxis and ferries going about their daily business carrying passengers to the islands and many of the attractions along the coast.

You can also get a few holiday snaps with the giant crab statue located near the Khanap Nam Pier. Officially named the Monument of Black Crabs, the black crab is a symbol of the town, denoting the respect the townspeople have for this crustacean that provides both food and income for so many.

13. Rock climbing on Railay Beach

While the stunning beauty of Railay Beach may be enough to lure many of its visitors, for others, it is climbing the towering limestone cliffs that are on their bucket list of things to do in Krabi.

Railey is one of the most popular climbing destinations in Thailand , and has hundreds of ascents suitable for everyone from highly professional climbers to the rank novice.

Around Railey, there are some climbing schools where you can book beginner climbing courses, including tuition, all necessary kit, and often collection from, and return to, your hotel.

The long-established Real Rocks Climbing School is considered one of the best, and with highly trained instructors, it offers a selection of courses from one day to multiple days.

Recommended activity: Half-Day Rock Climbing at Railay Beach

14. Visit the Shrine at Phra Nang Cave

If rock climbing in Railay Beach sounds like too much effort, why not take it easy and pay a visit to the Phra Nang Cave?

The Phra Nang Cave (also known as the Fertility Cave ) can be found at the beach’s southern end. It is said that fishermen and sailors from centuries ago worshipped a mythical sea princess, who became a symbol of fertility and lived in the cave.

Today, the cave is full of fertility symbols, with a propensity for the phallic kind. The legend goes on that if you drop a wooden carved phallus into the sea anywhere along the coast at high tide, it will find its way to the cave.

Whether true or not, who knows, but the cave certainly has plenty of them.

Inside the cave, you will also find the shrine of Phra Nang , much revered by local sailors. And view the stalactites that have produced a lookalike chandelier, formed by hundreds of years of minerals dripping from the cave roof.

The entrance to the cave is also considered an excellent place to get some good photos of the setting sun.

If you’re not staying at Railey, numerous tours are available from elsewhere to the cave, or you can book a water taxi to get you there from Ao Nang, costing around 100 baht.

15. Visit James Bond Island

Best things to do in Krabi: James Bond Island

That Thailand has truly magical places, no one doubts. This island is one of them. You will often see it in articles, postcards, or guides to Thailand.

The name of this place is Khao Phing Kan . It is known this way because this place appeared in the movie “The Man with the Golden Gun” by James Bond.

The whole area is gorgeous, and this limestone rock formation so spiky coming out of the sea is almost unreal. Undoubtedly, it is one of those places to see in Thailand and that lends itself to the spectacular photos we all want of our travels.

16. Try your hand at Scuba Diving

With some of the best diving waters in Thailand, it’s little wonder that divers from near and far head to Krabi Province to enjoy the best diving experiences.

For novice divers and those wanting to try this exhilarating sport for the first time, Ao Nang has several excellent diving schools , where long-standing professional divers will teach you the basics of scuba diving, depending on the length of your course.

If you want a taste of scuba diving to see if it’s for you, the introductory course is one day. Your instructor will cover all aspects of safety, how the equipment works and how to use it. If all goes well, you also get two accompanied open water dives. From then on, the choice is yours.

Further courses run from two to several days, where you can train to become a fully certified scuba diver and begin to explore the Andaman Sea’s mysterious and fascinating underwater world.

17. Treat yourself to a relaxing Thai Massage

Even if a full-on spa day available at the big resorts is beyond your holiday budget, you can still enjoy an invigorating Thai Massage almost anywhere you choose, including your favourite beach.

The masseur will undertake the massage using hands, thumbs, fingers, forearms, elbows and even feet, to squeeze and relax the muscles. He/she will also rock and reposition your body and limbs to pull and stretch the joints and muscles as required. No oils or lotions are applied during a full Thai massage.

Because of the Thai massaging style (stretching, pulling and kneading), you will not lay on a massage bed. A Thai massage is carried out from a mat or thin mattress laid on the floor (or sand) so the masseur can apply all the weight needed during the session.

A Thai Massage will typically take between 30 minutes to over an hour, and in a massage parlour will cost around 250 to 600 baht.

18. Be amazed by the giant reclining Buddha at Wat Sai Thai

Thai temples often have giant Buddha statues . In Krabi, you’ll find several of them. One is the Reclining Buddha at Wat Sai Thai Temple. It’s just a 15-minute drive from Ao Nang.

Don’t expect a statue as giant as the one at Wat Pho in Bangkok, but it doesn’t hurt to stop for a few minutes to take a picture.

19. Book a boat trip through the Mangrove Forest

Best things to do in Krabi: Ao Thalane

If you fancy a day away from the beach crowds and love nature, consider booking a long tail boat cruise through the Mangrove Forest of Krabi.

Trips leave Krabi from the pier on the Pak Nam River promenade by the Black Crab Statue. However, this trip has numerous variations and other embarkation points, including Ao Nang and Railay Beach.

Trips typically last three to four hours, and booking the complete package costs around 600 to 800 baht.

The trip is particularly popular with nature lovers, bird watchers and photographers, and some of your best holiday pictures can be snapped as you glide through the narrow waterways into the forest.

The forest also has large mud flats and wetland areas where you will see various species of waders.

On the complete package, you will visit the traditional fishing village of Koh Klang , where you can look around their fish farm, explore the village and enjoy a seafood lunch.

You also get to visit the fascinating Kanab Nam Cave , where centuries-old rock paintings are still visible, although there is a small extra charge.

If you’re feeling a little more active, there is also a guided kayak version of this trip , although personally, I prefer to be chauffeured.

20. Get the adrenalin pumping with some White Water Rafting

A recent addition to the things to see in Krabi, the Songprak River is not just a haven for the local birds and wildlife, but is fast becoming the place to go for wannabe adrenalin junkies.

If you’re feeling a little bored with jet skis, paragliding or rock climbing, how about enjoying a little white water rafting ?

The Songprak River flows through Phang Nga Province north of Krabi town, and a number of trips to the area include the five-mile stretch of rapids used for rafting . Journey time to the district is around 50 minutes from Krabi.

On arrival, instructors will brief you on all aspects of safety, what to expect on the water, and kit you out with all equipment, including hard hats and life jackets.

For those familiar with the sport, the grades of difficulty on the three-mile stretch are 2, 3 and 4, making it ideal for the novices. For those with previous experience, the course continues for a further two miles, making five miles in total.

A professional instructor accompanies each boat on its journey, to ensure there are no mishaps.

21. Make time your own, by hiring a kayak

Although I’ve briefly mentioned kayak-guided tours, hiring a kayak means your time is your own, with no restraints on how long you’ve got on this island or which beach you stop at for lunch.

With so many beautiful islands just offshore, Ao Nang is a great place to hire a kayak , but there are equally incredible places along the coast where you can pick one up.

If there are two of you, you can book two, one-person kayaks or a two-person kayak and halve the paddling.

A few considerations before collecting your kayak. Wear open-toed saddle s rather than flip-flops. Lather yourself in sunblock, and carry some in your backpack. Even if you’ve decided to lunch from a snack shack on a beach, do at least carry a decent-sized bottle of water with you and a couple of munchy bars.

If you hire from a well-established company, when you collect your kayak they should tell you about any inclement weather likely to blow in and any tide problems you should be aware of.

Once you slide onto the water, your time’s your own, and you can choose to explore the islands, limestone cliffs, caves, hidden beaches and mangrove forests.

Expect to pay anything from 600 – 1000 baht for a day’s rental , and the hire company should include life jackets and insurance in the cost.

22. Visit one of the prettiest viewpoints on Koh Phi Phi Don

Best things to do in Krabi: Koh Phi Phi

One of the biggest problems with getting those fantastic viewpoint snaps is the major hike required to get there. In some instances, suggesting a degree in mountaineering to undertake the climb to a particular viewpoint would certainly be helpful.

Not, however, if you’re Island Hopping and staying on Koh Phi Phi Don for a night or two. There are not one but three good viewpoint s as you walk up the track, and you will pass one and two on your way to three.

The top viewpoint is just over 180 metres above sea level. It’s not the highest in the world, but it still offers some stunning vistas across the islands and bay.

From the laid-back Reggae Bar on the beach, head for Loh Dalum Bay, and you will come to a well-worn path and signposts for the viewpoint.

Most of the path is paved or stepped, and if you’re of average fitness, the climb will take around 30 minutes . There are plenty of resting places along the route, and you will find snack shacks and restrooms at each viewpoint.

At viewpoint three, you can enjoy a burger or ice cream and chill in one of the hammocks strung up on the terrace.

Looking down from the viewpoint, you will enjoy the stunning landscape of Koh Phi Phi Leh, Loh Dalum Bay and Tonsai Village.

For the photographers, the best time to arrive is before 10.00am , to ensure the sun is behind you. And of course, sunsets are always a big draw.

After taking your photos and recovering from your climb you can return the way you came, or choose one of the three trails that take you further round the island to Rantee Beach, Pak Nam Beach or Ao Toh Koh.

As a footnote, joint trips are also available to Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh, where the film ‘The Beach’ was made in Maya Bay. I f you’re considering this excursion book early. Visitor numbers are strictly controlled to Maya Bay due to reef damage caused by previous visiting boats and tourists.

In conclusion, wherever you stay in the province, you will be close to many of the best things you may want to do and see in Krabi.

Although you will find plenty of things to do in Krabi year-round, the monsoon or rainy season runs from June through October, with the high visitor season from December through March/April.

One thing’s for sure: whenever you visit this stunningly beautiful country, you will make memories to last a lifetime.

Recommended tour: Phi Phi Islands Speedboat Day Tour

23. Go back in time with a visit to Koh Klang Island

Do you believe in time machines? You should, because just five minutes in a long tail ferry boat will transport you back through 100 years.

If you’ve ever thought about what life must have been like hundreds of years ago at your chosen holiday destination – now you can find out.

Koh Klang Island is home to 5,000 people, made up of rice farmers, fishermen and their families, with one big difference for this part of the world. The vast majority are Muslim.

From the pier at Krabi Town, where you pick up your ferry, you can see the roofs of Koh Klang village.

A small island just 70 km long, it was first colonised around a century ago, and while the world around it began to adapt to the increasing numbers of visitors, Koh Klang seemed to get left behind.

Depending on your longboat taxi driver, you may approach the island and its village through a mangrove fores t, which began life before the village.

The village is made up of traditional bamboo huts and has a floating restaurant . No pork or alcohol is allowed on the island, and you won’t find any temples here, but there are seven mosques and basic amenities.

In the fields, you can watch the farmers planting and harvesting their rice , while on the beach, fishermen land their catch, maintain their fish farm and repair their nets.

But things are slowly changing. Some residents have moved away from their traditional local skills and begun to produce handicrafts to sell to the slowly increasing numbers of visitors.

The population is friendly and welcoming, and will go out of their way to accommodate you.

There is also a limited amount of basic accommodation , which tends to be private rooms let by families. That said, although the accommodation may not be fit for a king, the villagers will certainly make you feel like royalty.

24. Flower Gardens: an idyllic spot for flower lovers

About 25 kilometres north of Dragon’s Crest, this beautiful park displays a wide range of flowers in different gardens and plant constructions such as hearts or pyramids.

It is one of those off-the-beaten-path things to do in Krabi if you plan to spend some time in the area and have a vehicle to explore the region. The entrance fee is inexpensive, and the place is ideal for taking pictures.

25. Enjoy good seafood at Lae Lay Grill

There are amazing restaurants in Krabi, and Lae Lay Grill is o ne of my favourite restaurants in Ao Nang. Although it is a bit far from the beach, inside the forest, it is worth a visit.

The restaurant offers good ocean views and is an ideal place for romantic dinners and to try quality seafood in the form of seafood platters or their most popular dish: soft crab.

Where To Stay in Krabi for a Week

Ao Nang is a bustling tourist hub with a wide range of accommodations, restaurants, and entertainment options.

It’s a convenient base for exploring the nearby islands and attractions. You can find luxurious resorts, mid-range hotels, and budget-friendly guesthouses in this area.

Railay Beach is a stunning peninsula accessible only by boat due to its towering limestone cliffs. It offers a more secluded and laid-back atmosphere compared to Ao Nang.

If you prefer a more authentic Thai experience, Krabi Town is worth considering. It’s the provincial capital and offers a local vibe with its markets, street food, and cultural attractions.

Tubkaek Beach is another serene and less crowded area with a few luxury resorts.

Best Time to Visit for a Week

The best time to visit Krabi, Thailand is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April.

This period offers the most favorable weather conditions with lower rainfall and comfortable temperatures.

The temperatures range from around 24°C (75°F) to 32°C (90°F). However, December to February can be the busiest months, so expect more crowds and higher prices.

Wet Season (May to October) in Krabi is characterized by higher humidity and occasional rainfall, often in the form of short bursts or evening showers.

While you can still enjoy sunny days during this period, you’re more likely to experience overcast skies and higher chances of rain.

So if blue skies and sunny days filled with island hopping is what you’re looking for, perhaps visit in the dry season.

Today, you’ll explore Krabi Town, the provincial capital known for its Thai markets, cultural attractions, and local delicacies.

Begin your exploration at the morning market, where you can immerse yourself in the local culture and witness the bustling trade of fresh produce, local delicacies, and handicrafts.

Try some authentic street food, such as grilled satay, fresh tropical fruits, or traditional Thai desserts. Dessert for breakfast? Completely understandable.

After exploring the market, visit the iconic Wat Tham Sua, also known as the Tiger Cave Temple . The temple is located in a serene forest setting and gets its name from a tiger paw print found in the cave.

Climb the 1,237 steps leading to the summit, passing beautiful Buddhist shrines along the way. The ascent may be challenging, but the views from the top are absolutely worth it.

Take your time to explore the temple complex, the statues, the golden Buddha images, and intricate carvings. Remember that game Temple Run ?

Day 5: Four Islands Tour and Sunset Cruise

Today, you’ll be back in a traditional Thai boat as you embark on a memorable full-day adventure known as the Four Islands Tour , which will take you to some of the most stunning islands in the Krabi region.

If you’ve seen Avatar 2 – The Way of Water , you’ll remember how the water shone like blue curaçao – That’s what you can expect to see today.

Start your day by hopping on a longtail boat or speedboat for the tour. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenic ride as you cruise through the waters of the Andaman Sea.

Your first stop is Phra Nang Cave Beach, located on the Railay Peninsula. You’ll get to see the  limestone cliffs that frame the beach and take a leisurely stroll along the soft sand. You can swim, sunbathe, or explore the nearby caves. If you didn’t get to see the caves on day 3, this is your chance.

Next, head to Chicken Island, named after its unique rock formation that resembles a chicken’s head. Enjoy a picnic lunch served on the boat or on one of the islands, savoring the flavors of Thai herb and spice.

Continue to Tup Island, a small, picture-perfect tropical paradise. During low tide, a sandbar emerges, connecting Tup Island with neighboring islands, creating a cool natural pathway that gives the illusion that you’re “walking on water”.

Finally, visit Poda Island, known for its long sandy beach and light waters. Relax on the beach, swim in the refreshing sea, or simply soak up the sun while appreciating the breathtaking views of the cliffs that dot the horizon.

Day 6: Emerald Pool and Hot Springs

Day 6 consists of a day trip to the enchanting Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve , where you’ll discover the famous Emerald Pool (Sa Morakot) and natural hot springs. It’s been a magical time in Krabi, and what better way to (almost) end off the trip than with these magical whirlpools.

Travel to the Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve, located approximately 70 kilometers from Ao Nang. The journey takes you through scenic landscapes of lush forests and towering mountains.

Once you arrive at the nature reserve, make your way to the Emerald Pool. It is a natural, freshwater pool renowned for its mesmerizing green hue.

Enter the witches cauldron, whilst being surrounded by the jungle. The pool is naturally fed by hot springs, which gives it its unique color and it is also said to have healing properties.

After enjoying the Emerald Pool, take a short walk through the jungle to reach the nearby natural hot springs. Immerse yourself in the warm, mineral-rich waters and let the soothing heat relax your muscles and revitalize your skin.

Spend some time exploring the surrounding trails and boardwalks, which allow you to appreciate the diverse flora and fauna of the nature reserve. Keep an eye out for colorful birds, butterflies, and other wildlife that inhabit the area.

If time permits, you can visit the nearby Khlong Thom Waterfall, where you can gasp at the cascading water that is surrounded by dense vegetation. Take a refreshing swim in the clear pools at the base of the waterfall or simply enjoy the serene atmosphere.

For lunch, you can have a picnic in the tranquil setting of the nature reserve, or head to a local restaurant nearby to sample traditional dishes from the area.

Krabi has a significant Muslim population, and there are several Muslim villages in the area. These villages offer a glimpse into Islamic culture, traditions, and architecture.

For the rest of the afternoon, you could explore mosques, observe locals practicing their faith, and perhaps even have the opportunity to try some traditional Muslim cuisine.

While not indigenous to Krabi, there are some hill tribe communities that have migrated to the region from northern parts of Thailand.

These villages provide a unique cultural experience as you interact with the tribe members, learn about their traditional customs, and admire their distinct clothing and crafts. Gain a deeper understanding of their traditions, beliefs, and daily life in the mountains.

Day 7: Scenic Kayaking and ATV Adventure

Your Thai adventure has almost come to an end, so the last thing to do on your last day is to embark on a kayaking adventure to see the last few gems that Krabi has to offer. You’ll embark on a scenic kayaking adventure.

Join a guided kayaking tour that will take you through the picturesque mangrove forests and amongst the cliffs of Krabi. Paddle along calm waters, immersing yourself in the wild beauty of the natural surroundings.

Discover hidden lagoons, caves, and channels, where you can observe the diverse wildlife that inhabits the mangrove ecosystem. Keep an eye out for birds, monkeys, and other fascinating creatures that call this area home.

Enjoy the tranquility of the mangrove forests as you navigate through the narrow waterways, admiring the unique flora and fauna that thrive in this ecosystem.

Take a break from kayaking and disembark on a secluded beach, where you can relax, swim, and snorkel.

You’ve been around a lot of water during your time in Krabi, so get yourself re-accustomed to land travel by going on a thrilling ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) adventure through the landscapes of Krabi (emphasis on the “land” part).

Follow your experienced guide as they lead you through a variety of terrains, including lush forests, rubber plantations, and muddy paths, offering a mix of adrenaline and awe-inspiring views. Rubber is one of the major agricultural products in Krabi.

You may come across villages that are part of rubber plantations, where locals engage in tapping rubber trees to extract latex. Explore the plantations, learn about the process of rubber production, and gain insights into the life of rubber farmers.

Experience the thrill of maneuvering your ATV through challenging terrain, and conquering bumps, dips, and obstacles along the way. Enjoy the freedom of riding through the open air and experiencing Krabi’s village life in a unique way.

Stop at panoramic viewpoints along the route to take in the views of Krabi’s countryside, cliffs, and distant islands.

Capture memorable photographs as you explore the hidden gems and lesser-known areas that are inaccessible by traditional transportation.

Depending on the tour you choose, you may have the opportunity to visit local villages and interact with the friendly locals, gaining insight into their way of life and cultural traditions.

Krabi is home to several traditional fishing villages along its coastline. These villages are characterized by wooden houses built on stilts above the water.

You can witness the fishermen going about their daily routines, repairing nets, and preparing their boats for the next fishing expedition. Immerse yourself in the maritime atmosphere and learn about the importance of fishing to the local economy.

Krabi’s fertile land supports various agricultural activities. You may encounter villages where locals engage in farming activities such as growing fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Witness the farmers working in their fields, cultivating the land, and tending to their crops. Depending on the season, you might have the opportunity to taste fresh produce or even participate in agricultural activities.

Colorful kayaks at Ao Loh Dalum beach on Phi Phi Don Island Krabi Province Thailand. Koh Phi Phi Don is part of a marine national park.

Krabi is the ultimate adventure filled nature getaway. It’s unbelievably beautiful, has islands and limestone cliffs that seem to grow right out of the blue waters themselves, offers punchy cuisine and has views that are deemed good enough to be your next screensaver.

Krabi can be a busy vacation or a relaxed one and it offers backdrops specifically for each. The best way to describe Krabi is to think of it like a person who matches your energy.

Before you leave, remember to recreate James Bond’s “walking into the sunset” video from “ The Man with the Golden Gun ”.
