Trek Fuel EX 5 Review – Plumped-Up XC Pushover or Real Trail Monster?

2017 trek fuel ex 5 29 review

The new Trek Fuel EX 5 29 is a monster of a bike. Adding bigger 29” wheels and a more aggressive geometry has resulted in a potent performance boost… #gainz! It’s the skinny Olympic weightlifter of the group; at first glance it’s easy to write off as a plumped-up XC pushover, but challenge it to an arm wrestle and its power will make you cry like a baby.

Trek Fuel EX 29 5.0 | 130 / 130 mm (v / h) | 14.80 kg | € 1,999

The frame shares little with its predecessor, with a new ‘Straight Shot’ down tube to boost stiffness and ‘Knock Block’ headset to stop the bars damaging the top tube. It’s clear when looking at the specification that you are buying a very nice frame, as there’s not much else to get excited about. The 750 mm Bontrager bar is nice, and the Shimano Deore 2×10 drivetrain and M315 brakes are functional (if a little basic), but the lack of a dropper post is disappointing. It’s the Boost 148 frame with Mino Link suspension adjustment (you only need the low setting) that’s the real star, featuring internal routing with a neat downtube protector. It will also take 27.5+ wheels if you want to go semi-fat!

vergleichstest-grouptest-025-trek-fuel-ex-29-1

On the trail, the Trek Fuel EX 5 29 is an entirely different animal from the outgoing model. Gifted with Full Floater ABP (keeping the suspension active under hard braking), it offers the best descending back end in the group test. It’s capable of hitting wild lines with ease while offering excellent control in repeated fast hits. However, this new DH prowess has come at the expense of uphill urgency; while it’s no slouch on the climbs, it’s certainly a bike that nods its head more towards descending. The 130 mm rear is so supportive that it chews through rocks and roots without fuss, but it’s best to use the platform damping while climbing or your power will bob away. We were impressed to see Boost wheels (important with budget 29er wheels) and the RockShox Deluxe Shock with Trek-specific tuning. The RockShox Sektor Silver RL fork is functional, if a little uninspiring, and works better with the bigger wheels, but it’s the refined geometry and impressive suspension that repeatedly takes the low-grip Bontrager XR3 tires to the limit, and then far beyond.

The Trek Fuel EX 5 in detail

Forks: RockShox Sector RL 130 mm Rear shock: RockShox Deluxe RL 130 mm Brakes: Shimano M315 Drivetrain: Shimano Deore Seatpost: Bontrager SSL Stem: Bontrager Rhythm Comp Bars: Bontrager Alloy Wheels: Bontrager Alloy Tires: Bontrager XR3 Weight: 14.80 kg Price: € 1,999

Best in test: Trek’s Full Floater ABP suspension is class-leading. Active and supportive, it laughs at rocks and big impacts, keeping control while others have lost the plot.

We did encounter a few specification issues: the combination of the long Shimano M315 brake levers and Shimano Deore 10-speed shifters with annoying gear selection windows meant we could not optimise the brake position. Also, if and when the chain falls off, there’s a clearance issue that allows the chain to jam under the chainstay, which is messy to fix and left scratches. With a decent set of tires and a future fork upgrade, the Fuel EX 29 would be unstoppable.

The Trek Fuel EX 5 29 is a born descender – punching forward like a Russian sprinter jacked up on HGH and testosterone, hammering down the trail faster than the brakes can deal with. Its poise and confidence makes a mockery of rocks and obstructions, and the rolling speed is enough to blow your eyeballs out the back of your head. It takes the ‘Best in Test’ with ease but Chain issues did result in much profanity, however.

  • Insanely fast downhill
  • Exceptional rear suspension
  • Brakes cannot keep up with speed
  • Chain can jam under frame

Fuel EX 5 Plus eats up boulders and roots on the descents

Trek Fuel EX 5 27.5 Plus 2017

Product Overview

Overall rating:, trek fuel ex 5.

  • First-class frame quality
  • Needs better tyres and a clutch mech

Manufacturer:

Price as reviewed:.

For 2017, Trek has completely reworked its Fuel EX platform. Not only has it increased the travel to 130mm, it now offers two versions: one with 29in wheels, and a 27.5 Plus bike with massive 2.8in tyres. And it’s this bike that we’ve tested here.

2017 trek fuel ex 5 29 review

Both models share the exact same frame, but the Plus bikes get 140mm travel forks , 10mm more than the 29ers. The extra fork length helps raise the bottom bracket height and offset the fact that Plus wheels come up smaller than 29in wheels.

Trek isn’t the only brand to adopt this two-wheel size, single frame approach, but its Mino-Link gives a distinct advantage. This small, asymmetric chip in the rocker link allows you to change the seatstay position relative to the link, which in turn changes the geometry.

In the high position, with Plus wheels, the BB height is roughly the same as the 29er in the low setting. As such, the Plus bike ships in the high position, but there’s nothing to stop you running it in the lower/slacker setting.

2017 trek fuel ex 5 29 review

Rubber bumper adds belt and braces protection

One new feature on the Fuel EX frame is the Straight Shot down tube. According to Trek, it’s stiffer and lighter than the gooseneck profile normally used to achieve the necessary fork crown clearance.

Trek gets around the clearance issue with a steering lock that prevents the fork crown ever reaching the down tube.

Full steering lock is about 53° in either direction, and we’ve only hit the stop once while riding, on a particularly tight switchback climb.

Trek may have bumped up the travel on the Fuel EX, but it hasn’t taken away any of the signature features that made its suspension great. It’s still got ABP (Active Braking Pivot) to help keep the rear wheel tracking when the rear brake is applied, and there’s a metric size shock with increased overlap for improved reliability.

We’re not really fans of lock-outs, and while the one on the RockShox Deluxe is solid, we’d prefer a setting that firms up the suspension for climbing, but doesn’t make the rear suspension totally redundant.

Guide pressures printed on the lower legs of the RockShox Sektor Silver fork proved to be surprisingly accurate, but even with the rebound damping set fully open, the fork felt a little sluggish to return, so light riders running lower pressure will struggle to get the optimum set-up.

2017 trek fuel ex 5 29 review

Tubeless-ready rims spell less sighs and more highs

Trek states that the Fuel EX 5 comes with a 750mm handlebar , which sounds ideal. Unfortunately, the bike actually has a 720mm bar, which is at odds with its progressive geometry and attitude. Thankfully, it gets a 60mm stem, so all is not lost.

Probably the biggest oversight in the specification is that it doesn’t get a clutch rear mech. As such, the Fuel EX is more prone to dropping the chain, and it’s noisy as hell, even with the rubberised chainstay protector.

2017 trek fuel ex 5 29 review

Check your Mino-Link bolts — ours fell out

Performance

Setting up the Trek was a doddle. And seeing as we weren’t clipping pedals in the high geometry setting, we quickly flipped the Mino-Link to the low position to take advantage of the slacker head angle. All was golden until one of the Mino-Links fell out mid-ride.

Thanks to Head For The Hills bike shop, in Dorking, we were back up and running the very same day, and this time we added a spot of Loctite to the bolt.

In the right conditions, the Fuel EX 5 Plus eats up boulders and roots on the descents, and this encourages you to ride off the brakes.

Bontrager’s Chupacabra 2.8in tyres also provide unparalleled traction on the climbs, making the most painful part of your ride that much easier. They also roll surprisingly quickly, but the profile is very rounded, so the bike can start to slide in corners before you even reach the side knobs.

Get it on some sloppy waterlogged singletrack and it’s even more difficult to keep it moving in a straight line — and that’s with our £220 Maxxis tyre upgrade.

Trek Fuel EX 9 29 review

The Fuel you need to set the trails alight?

Steve Behr / Immediate Media

Great geometry and kit encourage aggressive riding; comfortable and fast on rolling terrain

Seat angle could be steeper for climbing; not the lightest

2017 trek fuel ex 5 29 review

Trek’s trail 29er sports 130mm travel at each end. There’s a carbon version for the same price, but I opted for the alloy bike due to the lure of posher parts.

  • Trek Fuel EX 8.0 Women's 29er mountain bike review
  • Trek Bikes reviews and buying advice

Trek’s ‘ABP’ (Active Braking Pivot) suspension design puts the rearmost pivot concentric with the wheel axle, rather than on the chainstay. As with Horst Link bikes, such as the Specialized Camber Comp Carbon 29, the rear brake caliper is mounted on the seatstay, so braking forces don’t interfere with the suspension as much as on a traditional single-pivot design.

The frame has a straight down tube, which is claimed to boost stiffness but would normally be in the path of the front wheel. Trek’s ‘Knock Block’ system limits how far the bar can turn, to stop the fork crown contacting the frame. This reduced steering lock isn’t usually noticeable when riding — just don’t try any barspins!

Included in the solid spec is a sensible 760x65mm cockpit, wide Bontrager wheels, SRAM X1 gearing and Guide RS brakes. The Fox shock uses Trek’s Formula One-inspired RE:aktiv damping tune, which is claimed to improve pedalling.

Trek Fuel EX 9 29 ride impression

The Fuel EX needs that clever damping tech. Pedalling stood up with the shock in ‘open’ mode results in a fair amount of bob.

Add a tough, wide wheelset and stiff frame, and the Fuel EX rewards you for chucking it down rocky chutes and stuffing it into corners

Flipping to ‘medium’ cuts down on this a fair bit, and large bumps are absorbed almost as if the shock had been left fully open. This is because of the RE:aktiv tune, which offers quite firm low-speed compression damping, particularly in the ‘medium’ and ‘firm’ modes, but allows the valves to pop open under harder impacts.

While this is handy for pedally descents and technical climbs, it’s not quite the best of both worlds. When sprinting, the firmest mode still permits a little bob, while in the ‘medium’ setting, the shock feels slightly insensitive. Left ‘open’, the suspension performs pretty well over rough ground and absorbs big hits nicely.

The fork’s GRIP damper is less responsive to trail chatter than more expensive units found on bikes such as the Norco Optic C9.2 too, so when battering over really bumpy ground, the 130mm Trek wasn’t quite as smooth as I’d hoped.

Although the cockpit is relatively well-proportioned, I’d fit a shorter stem to get the most out of the long reach, as the Fuel EX felt a touch stretched-out on steep descents. The tyres lack bite in corners too.

SRAM’s Guide RS brakes performed well, helping to push the Trek’s trail chaos confidence.

I used the ‘low’ geometry setting for most of my testing, which gave a confidence-inspiring ride. With a 67-degree head angle and fairly long front centre, the Trek felt like a capable and stable descender.

Add a tough, wide wheelset and stiff frame, and the Fuel EX rewards you for chucking it down rocky chutes and stuffing it into corners.

At 13.9kg it’s on the heavy side, and it’s got the stiff gearing too, making steep, sustained climbs a bit of a chore. More importantly, the ‘low’ setting results in a 74.5-degree effective seat angle. Although this is steeper than bikes such as the Canyon Neuron AL, I found it a little too laidback for attacking technical climbs. Switching to the ‘high’ setting helps, but this also raises the BB and steepens the head angle, losing the Fuel EX its descending edge.

Although it’s not the fastest climber, it’s no slouch. The fast-rolling, high-volume tyres carry speed exceptionally well. With the shock in the firmer settings, it responds well to pumping and pedalling efforts, too. It bowls along flowing trails effortlessly and really comes alive when pointed downhill.

What if it came spec’d with a stiffer fork, more travel and a slacker headtube? The team at Trek delivered and the 2017 bike answers these questions.
