Description

Journey aboard Holoholo's 65-foot high speed specially designed powercat for a 7 hour supertour of the Na Pali coastline and the island of Niihau. The rugged beauty of this area is truly a sight to behold! Witness sea caves, waterfalls that drop from hanging valleys to the ocean below, and see the Na Pali coast trail and the remote beaches that mark this pristine wilderness area. After enjoying the Na Pali, your real adventure begins! The boat crosses the channel to the forbidden and mysterious island of Niihau. On the crossing it is common to encounter dolphins and melon-headed whales! Upon arriving at Niihau the boat stops for snorkeling at Lehua Rock, an islet on the northern tip. This volcanic caldera provides crystal-clear water for snorkeling. Sometimes larger sea life can be seen swimming on the bottom almost a hundred feet below!

Because of the shape of the volcanic caldera, it is almost always possible to find a great snorkel location that is protected from wind and ocean swells. There is very little sand along the islet of Lehua, so the water clarity is amazing. This volcanic feature is very similar to the famous snorkel location of Molokini off the coast of Maui, only THIS volcanic cone is much MUCH larger!

What to Bring and Wear: Wear swimsuits and bring a towel.

Minimum Notice for Cancellations / Changes: For parties of 1-5, cancellation must be made at least 48 hours before the start of the event. For parties of 6 or more, cancellation must be made a minimum of 7 full days prior to tour date.

"Supertour" is an apt description for this adventure. No other trip will allow you to see and do so much in one day! When I went out on this tour I saw two different types of dolphins, melon headed whales, snorkeled with a Hawaiian monk seal, watched a school of mahi mahi frolic just a few yards away from the boat ... I could go on and on. Generally, I find the Na Pali coast trips to be outstanding for sightseeing but the snorkeling isn't all that great. With this tour you get to see the beauty of the Na Pali AND combine it with wonderful snorkeling at Lehua, an ancient volcanic caldera. I've never been on a tour where I saw so much diversity in terms of large marine animals.

While this tour goes TO the island of Niihau, it does NOT actually stop and land there. You do get some nice views of the island from just off-shore. You get a much better feel for the geography of Ni'ihau when you see it from this perspective.

I highly recommend this tour but, and I repeat BUT ... the channel crossing on the way back to Kauai can get rough. They do not allow anyone who is pregnant, has neck or back injuries, or is under the age of 5 on this tour. Always keep one hand on the boat at all times as you are moving around. Those who are prone to motion sickness should take preventative measures.

After sailing along Na Pali Coast, a must-see on Kauai, cross the Kaulakahi Channel to Niihau Island, known as the “Forbidden Island”. Discover wild marine life in one of Hawaii’s most pristine snorkeling spots. This 7-hour boat tour includes breakfast, lunch, drinks (including beer and wine), and snorkel equipment rental.

Depart from Port Allen at sunrise for the world-famous Na Pali Coast. The captain and crew will explain the legends, stories, and history of Kauai’s northern coastline as you view sheer cliffs, waterfalls, secluded beaches, and wild marine life.

We will then cross the Kaulakahi Channel to Lehua Crater off the island of Niihau. The crescent-shaped crater is a state wildlife refuge. The area near Lehua Crater is also known for its many seabird species, including endangered and endemic species. The captain will also tell you the origin of Niihau’s name as the Forbidden Island, as well as the island’s history and stories.

The waters near Lehua Crater and Niihau are among the most beautiful in Hawaii and are known for clear visibility. Niihau Snorkeling Tours – A Quick How-To

Niihau Snorkeling Tours offer a special in-water experience. Snorkeling is fairly easy (as long as you are comfortable in the ocean and know how to swim!) if you are able to relax, in fact, you rarely need much movement of your arms. Instead, it is better if you hold your arms straight back along your side, keep your legs straight and kick slowly and smoothly, without bending your knees much. The most important thing is to breathe with slow, even breaths, and stay aware of your surroundings. A crew member gives you instructions on the use of the equipment and designates a snorkel area for you to stay within while another crew member is in the water with you on a big surfboard, so if at any point you find yourself getting anxious, they’re nearby to give you a hand.

Why Our Niihau Snorkeling Tour?

We provide high-quality snorkel gear, silicone masks in various sizes and prescription lenses, as well as the snorkel. The snorkel is the breathing tube that allows you to stay in the water for extended periods of time, not having to waste your energy or disturb fish by lifting your head out of the water every time you need to take a breath. You want a snorkel with a comfortable mouthpiece, something that is smooth and soft. A snorkel holder is a handy feature; it attaches the snorkel to your mask strap, ensuring that the snorkel tube stays upright while your face is in the water.

The mask is what allows you to see underwater. We provide several sizes and shapes, for children and adults, so you can find the perfect fit on our Niihau Snorkeling Tours . All masks include a mask strap to fit around your head. Masks cover your eyes and your nose, allowing you to see underwater and plugging your nose, so you do not release air from your nose that would cause bubbles to appear directly in your field of vision. We have masks with vision-correcting lenses available in various diopter increments. Defog solution is available on board to prevent your mask from fogging up while you are in the water.

Fins are an important addition to snorkeling; they help you swim with ease and give you much more speed with minimal effort. Fins are required because strong currents or an underwater distraction can cause you to drift away from the snorkeling area. We provide enclosed-foot fins that easily slip on to your bare feet in a variety of sizes that correlate to your shoe size.

Wetsuits are not necessary in Hawaii as the average water temperature year-round ranges from 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. We do not have any wetsuits available on our Niihau Snorkeling Tours , but you are welcome to bring your own. Sunscreen is highly recommended throughout the trip; the Hawaiian sun is strong, especially when spending your day at sea, and can easily burn all skin types. We offer reef-friendly sunscreen complimentary on-board, better for the environment and better for your body! We also recommend wearing clothing, like rash guards or other SPF protective shirts to wear in the water and on-board to protect yourself during a long day on the water. 

Note that Snorkeling is Not for Everyone…

We do not recommend snorkeling for those who are unable to swim . Flotation is available but should be used only for assistance. Pool noodles are available to support you while snorkeling, it is best to lay with them under your armpits to provide some extra flotation. We do not provide life jackets for snorkeling as life jackets are designed to keep your face out of the water, which makes snorkeling impossible! 

Snorkeling is not advised for those with physical, mental, or medical conditions that may make their participation unsafe. It is not a good idea for those with a strong fear of the ocean or ocean animals to partake in snorkeling. It may not be recommended if seasickness is prevalent as this, or other ailments, could cause panic or fatigue in the water. Napali Coast and Niihau Tour Details

You’re up and at ’em very early for your 6 am departure. But the early start time doesn’t matter because you’re about to see two special sites that are only accessible by boat: the Napali Coast and Niihau. This super tour first takes you cruising up the Napali Coast where you’ll get a view of the staggering (and stunning) cliffs of the Napali Coast. Next, you’ll head to the coast of Niihau, a private island that is dedicated to preserving the rich Hawaiian culture. While you aren’t allowed on the island, the crew will find a great snorkeling spot so you can enjoy the sea life at a spot very few people get to experience.

The tour leaves from Port Allen, on the west side of the island. Included in the tour is breakfast, lunch, and beverages (beer and wine are served after snorkeling). Snorkeling gear is provided, though you can also bring your own.

FAQ: More on What to Expect

Are life jackets provided for snorkeling.

No, life jackets are only provided for use on the boat. Anyone needed additional floatation will be given a pool noodle to help them while snorkeling. But it’s advised that anyone who is not comfortable swimming in the ocean consider whether this is the right tour for them. The ocean currents can be strong and unpredictable and might not create an ideal situation for novice swimmers.

What about motion sickness?

This is not a leisurely sail through smooth waters. You’ll want to consider taking motion sickness medication to help make your trip more enjoyable. Young kids and elderly passengers may not be comfortable on a long and speedy boat ride.

• This tour brings us to a remote location with a possibility of bumpy conditions during the ride, please be aware and plan accordingly.

• This experience requires good weather. If it’s canceled due to poor weather, you’ll be offered a different date or a full refund

We wanted something fast and more exciting than the slower catamaran tours but we were also a little apprehensive about our 7 and 9 year old sitting on the edge of the other rafts that other tour operators offer. The super raft with captain J’s was the perfect boat. The seats were comfortable and the ride was fun and exhilarating. It also had a bathroom which was a plus as some of the other raft tours didn’t have one on board. The tour itself was amazing. The Napali coast was beyond beautiful. We were also able to see spinner dolphins, whales (including a mom and baby together) and even a sea turtle. Going under the waterfall and into sea cave were really awesome as well. Our tour guides, Nohili and Mason, were awesome. They made sure everyone was safe and comfortable. They were very knowledgeable about the area and the wildlife and were full of interesting facts. They even acted as our photographers making sure we got some family photos with the stunning Napali coast backdrop. Two adults and 2 teens in our family and it was the highlight of our trip. We were fortunate enough to be able to go into the sea caves and under the waterfall! We went out with Captain Naheeli and first mate Cannon and they were top notch. I was thoroughly impressed with Capt Naheeli’s navigation skills. No One got sick and those are some rough waters. He is a very skilled captain! Cannon was super friendly and knowledgeable and took great care of us! We were blessed to see bottle nosed dolphins launching and flipping out of the water and a mama whale and baby calf. At the snorkeling spot we saw a sea turtle and many large fish. Excellent snorkeling equipment. The scenery was so stunning that at times, it felt like a dream. Recommend the afternoon tour for the perfect lighting. Cannon has great taste in music and my teens define approved! I would do this tour again, if I’m fortunate enough to come back. So glad we did not choose a razor where we would have to hold on for 6 hours and sit on the side. The super raft was super comfortable with nice seats and a bathroom. This time we had an Captain Nono and Noah as our guides and they were excellent. Extremely knowledgable about everything we saw, and Captain Nono infused his talks with his personal familiarity with Kauaian culture as he was born and raised on the island. They both catered to our comfort and our desire for excitement and awe, and did not fail to deliver. The trip was exhilarating, especially our surprise entrance to the sea cave with no ceiling and our up-close-and-personal with two humpback whales. Safety was, of course, first and foremost. Ni’ihau the “The Forbidden Island” is located 18 miles off the western coast of Kauai.  It is inhabited entirely by those of Native Hawaiian descent. Kauai Offshore Adventures is proud to be the only company able to offer a raft tour to this remote and awe-inspiring destination. On this epic Ni’ihau Snorkeling Adventure, you will quickly cross the open channel to Ni’ihau and neighboring Lehua- a crescent shaped atoll and birdsanctuary, here your captain will share with you the rich and interesting history of the island while finding the best place to set up for a day of snorkeling or swimming.

The waters around Ni’ihau are among the cleanest and liveliest in the state, with visibility reaching in excess of 100 feet and a variety of sea life that is unmatched. Common sightings at Ni’ihau are Hawaiian Monk Seals, Eagle Rays, Spinner Dolphins, Sea Turtles, Octopus, and an endless array of fishes of varying sizes. This tour also gives the opportunity to find amazing Whale Sharks, Pilot Whales, and Humpback Whales in the winter. This Ni’iahu snorkel tour ventures to a remote destination and focuses on snorkeling, guests should be comfortable in the ocean and have at least a beginner understanding of snorkel equipment. All snorkel equipment is provided!

37’ NAIAD Kauai Voyager I is a rigged hull raft newly built and offers more space and comfort than any zodiac or other raft on Kaua’i. Our guests can enjoy individual seating and comfort comparable to a larger catamaran while also experiencing the maneuverability and speed required to access the Na Pali’s smaller caves and waterfalls. A fully equipped restroom on board also alleviates a common concern with this style of boat, while wrap-around safety rails enhance this versatile craft to make it safer for everyone. A sturdy ladder enhances the snorkel experience with safe entry and exit from the water. There truly is no better way for the adventurous soul to see the NaPali Coast or Ni’ihau.
