While seeing New York from the open-top deck of the double-decker bus, the city unfolded block by block with panoramic views from every angle.

Are There Toilets on the Big Bus

No. Unlike charter buses, you won’t travel long between stops. So the best thing to do is exit at a stop, find a public restroom, see an attraction, if desired, and then catch the next bus.

Charter buses come equipped with a bathroom because travel is expected to be for a much longer period.

How Does the Big Bus Tour Work in New York City

The tour offers three options for purchase — 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day.

When you decide the number of days of your tour and purchase your ticket, the clock starts when your ticket is scanned while boarding the bus for the first time.

The ticket is good for 24, 48, or 72 hours. So, if you have a 1-day ticket and board the bus at 11:00 AM on Monday, it can still be used until 11:00 AM on Tuesday.

The buses run every 20 minutes on average. However, the first stop at the M&M store can be a long wait during peak season.

Big Bus NYC Blue Route

The blue route covers upper Manhattan, and half of the ride is mostly views of Central Park. You can switch to the blue route at red stop #2.

We recommend changing routes at stop #11 (the Majestic Deli) where you can take a break and have a nice lunch.

Tips and Things to Know Before You Go

The bus has two levels, the upper level offers panoramic views of the city but be careful of overhanging traffic lights and trees. Don’t stand while the bus is in motion.

• After you find a seat, check the audio to confirm it is working.
• Snacks are allowed. Bring a frozen bottle of water and protein bites to keep you energized.
• When on the upper deck, cover up with sunscreen to protect your skin on hot sunny days.
• If you are a family of 3 or more, take seats across from one another so you’ll have views and photos from both sides of the bus.

Tourists were lined up at stop #1 at least an hour before departure and the line extended the entire block and rounded the corner.

We decided to see other points of interest and returned around 11:00 AM.

The wait to board the bus was about 20 minutes. It was a relaxing ride and there we saw so much!

By the time we reached stop #9, we were pumped and ready to exit the bus so that we could explore the city! And you probably will be too.

Here’s the secret sauce that really made the experience memorable. Exit at stop #9 and take a FREE ferry to Staten Island.

To see the Statue of Liberty, stand on the left side of the boat. When returning, stand on the right side.

Final Thoughts About the Big Bus Tour in New York City

Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to see New York city and when you are on the upper deck, you hardly notice the traffic.

Some other advantages of seeing the city by bus include:

• Avoiding parking hassles. I mean, who actually drives in New York?!
• Photo opportunities. With the open-top or large windows, you have excellent photo opportunities as you pass by iconic landmarks and cityscapes.
• Comprehensive sightseeing of major landmarks and attractions within two hours.
• You can get local recommendations from the guides who operate the bus.

I usually opt for a hop-on hop-off bus when I am short on time or to get my bearings in the city before deciding what to do.

Either way, when you take the tour bus, it doesn’t appear impossible to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Do I have to purchase tickets in advance?

Advance purchase is highly recommended and tours often sell out in advance. To maximize your chances of getting the day and time you prefer, please book well in advance. Tickets can be purchased with Visa, Mastercard, or American Express.

What’s not included?

Gratuities are not included, nor required, but always appreciated for a job well done!

Is there a cancellation policy?

Once purchased, tickets cannot be refunded and cannot be rescheduled because your space is being guaranteed at the event.

What if it rains?

The tours run rain or shine, so please dress according to the day’s forecast. Please keep in mind that most of the tour takes place on our vehicle, so you will be out of the elements.

Are children allowed? What type of ticket should I buy?

Yes, and there is a reduced price for children’s tickets. While we welcome children of all ages on the tour, the tour is not recommended for small children. We have reduced price tickets for children ages 4 to 11. Children ages 3 and younger can come for free with an accompanying adult ticket and must sit on their parent’s lap.

Can I bring food or beverages on the bus?

Food and drinks are not allowed on the bus. However, lunch will be available for purchase at Boone Hall Plantation.

Are there any stops along the way?

We will stop at the Battery for a brief photo break.

Is the bus air conditioned?

Yes, the bus is air conditioned.

Is the tour narrated?

Yes, the tour is fully narrated by a licensed, professional tour guide.

Is there a restroom on the bus?

No, but restrooms are located at the meeting location. We highly recommend using the bathrooms at the starting location before the tour

Do you run year-round?

Yes, we operate tours seven days a week year-round except for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Seasonal hours apply, so please check our calendar for the most up-to-date schedule information.

What kind of a vehicle will we be traveling in?

The city tours are given in a 25 passenger, air conditioned bus.

Is there assigned seating on the bus?

Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are traveling with a large group, you may want to arrive 15 – 20 minutes prior to departure.

How should I dress for the tour?

Check the forecast. Buses are climate controlled, and you do stay on the bus for the duration of the tour.

Is the bus handicap accessible?

At present, we cannot accommodate wheelchairs, but the bus is accessible for those with limited mobility if they can be assisted by a companion.

Will locals enjoy the tour as well, or is it mostly for tourists?

Absolutely! Whether you are looking for a way to entertain out-of-town guests, planning a bachelor/bachelorette party, having a team-building exercise, or just want to learn more about the wonderful city you live in, this is the tour for you! You’ll be surprised at how much you will learn on the tour from the comfort of our bus.

Will we be able to purchase souvenirs or shop during the tour?

Adventure Sightseeing T-shirts are available for purchase at our sister company, Charleston Harbor Tours. The kiosk is located at the Charleston Maritime Center at 10 Wharfside Street. There are various other Charleston souvenirs available for purchase.

Are pets allowed?

No. Service animals are allowed, however.

Does the tour start and end at the same place?

The tour starts and ends at the same location. There will be the option to get off the bus towards the end of the tour at the Market. Transportation is provided back to the meeting location if you choose to not get off at the Market.

Is there parking?

Yes, there will be parking garages available by the meeting location. Exact meeting location and parking details will be provided immediately upon purchase of tickets.

Are gratuities included?

Gratuities are not included in the ticket price. While not required, gratuities are accepted and always appreciated by the tour guides.

Is smoking allowed on the tour?

Smoking is not permitted during the tour.

Can I bring luggage on the bus/leave my belongings on the bus?

No. We do not have space on the bus for large items such as luggage, wheelchairs, or strollers.

Is the tour only offered in English?

Yes, the tour is only given in English.

Are gift certificates available for the Adventure Sightseeing trips?

Yes, gift certificates are available and they make perfect gifts for holidays, birthdays, or any other occasion! To purchase a gift certificate please click here.

How is my gift certificate delivered? Can I print it out now and give it to the recipient myself?

Yes, you can! When you purchase your gift certificate online, you will be presented immediately with your gift certificate so that you can print it out and deliver it. If you buy it over the phone, a link to your gift certificate will be emailed to you as soon as your purchase is completed.

What if I want the gift certificate emailed to the recipient instead?

Initially, I had some amount of distrust ordering on line. Worried that tickets would not come through, etc. Mathematically pre calculated if TourPass could offer savings compared to purchasing admission tickets individually. TourPass certainly did! To get the most out of our day, I planned an aggressive itinerary. We even brought sandwiches for lunch, so as not to waste a minute. We were able to get in 6 standard tours and one featured! Our second featured tour on Red Boat was cancelled. TourPass promptly refunded this amount on my credit card. No hassle, no worries! We did the1 day St Augustine pass. The featured Trolley Tour was outstanding, as were standard tours The Oldest Store and Jail. If I ever get to Savanah or Charleston will definitely go with TourPass. They did a great job of covering St Augustine’s highlights. Their app was user friendly and showed proximity of nearby attractions, saving steps and time. Everything was so easy. It’s not often one has such a positive experience. TourPass offers value and demonstrated integrity. You can trust them.

I purchased the Savannah tour pass for 3 days, I did not use them consecutively, as I was on town for 8 days. I chose to do the Hop on Hop off Tour on my first day to give me an overview of Savannah, I rode the trolleys for a total of two loops, guide offered a different perspective on the city. I took a walking tour, Brad was awesome, 1.5 hrs of wonderful history. I rode the Paddle boat, was a bit disappointed the wheel doesn't function. I also visited Fort Pulaski on my last day in Savannah, it was a wonderful experience. Those were the 4 featured options I used. I also used multiple options from the normal options, my 2 favorites were the Square Pops and the Jepsen Art Center. I cannot express how awesome it was to be able to enter a venue, have it paid for, and just enjoy. I will purchase the Savannah Pass when I return next year, it was well worth it's value. Now I am hopeful the Charleston, SC Pass, that it is just as terrific, as I am visiting in the Fall.

This was awesome value for the money, we were in both places the first week in March with another couple and it made planning things to do much easier and the value was outstanding. We figure we saved about $100 per couple.

We purchased the two day St. Augustine TourPass and found the pass well worth the money, providing us with access to museums and tours we might have passed on had we had to pay full price to see without the pass. Highly recommend purchasing, especially if in the area for several days.

Pro Tip #1: Hop On Hop Off Trolleys

• If you plan on riding the Hop On Hop Off Trolley you can park for free at the Trolley bus station. If staying in the historic district they will also provide hotel pick-up (call them to schedule).

Museum bus tour will highlight Black arts and culture

A bus tour of local art museums aims to showcase Black artworks and help people feel more comfortable in those spaces. The National Commission for Black Arts & Entertainment is creating the "Family Heritage Hop: A Black Arts & Culture Museum Tour," set to launch later this spring.

"I feel like everybody should have access to the arts here, and I wanted to be able to break down any barriers to that," says Daphney Thomas, commission president and founder.

"Oftentimes some families don't have access, or they might not feel that they are welcome in certain places, or know that there are artists and projects and programs that do reflect African American culture, and that they are welcome and that they can ... see themselves inside of these spaces."

The commission is creating the tour using a $10,000 grant from ArtsWave. It's part of the arts organization's Catalyzing Impacts program that just awarded more than $326,000 for 49 projects.

Participants — the plan is for each tour to take 50-60 people — will visit several local art museums such as the Taft Museum of Art and the Cincinnati Art Museum, and explore works created by Black artists. There also will be food, activities, workshops, and the opportunity to engage with some of the artworks.

Thomas is aiming to offer four free bus tours between May and September. The ArtsWave grant will cover the first two and the commission is applying for additional funding from other sources for the second two.

While the tours will be open to everyone, Thomas wants to reach those who might not be able to get to or afford to visit the museums on their own, and especially children.

"We would love to extend the offer to those that might not have the means to afford to take their family — meaning all of their children to the museums — and those who might find themselves without transportation. Those are the two barriers that we are removing for those who find themselves in need of those," she says.

Thomas is also hopeful people, especially children, will be energized to return, learn more, get engaged, and be excited about the arts because they can see themselves reflected in the art and artists.

That's 1.5 hrs after starting. When we were picked up we were told the tour was finishing in 2 hours, not the 5 as expected. We were told we could use our tickets the next day, but we were leaving in the morning. We just had to do the tour and not get off at any of the sights. We didn't even get to use the tickets we had for the museums. If we had been told this the day before, we could have started the door downtown and had longer. Total waste of money! I'd send several emails to this company asking for a refund but have been completely ignored. I'd also asked a general query on first booking and that was ignored too. She did indicate that she would not be the one picking us up at 5:30. We were done with our visit and waiting at the pick-up location starting about 5. A shuttle pulled up about 5:20, but the driver not got out to indicate he was with Blues City Tours. The name on the shuttle was Memphis Hop. As time went by and the location closed and there was just the four of us and one other couple. The other couple finally noticed in small print on the side of the shuttle that it was owned by Blues City Tours and checked with the driver. When asked he said yes, he was there to pick up 7 folks, there were only the 6 of us and he had no knowledge of us four. He was unsure how to get to our hotel and needed to continually look at directions on his phone, making us a bit nervous in traffic. • Morna23 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Experience and Knowledgeable Guide We booked the Memphis Hop on and Hop Off Bus Tour during our two night stay in Memphis and we were not disappointed. Our guide Evelyn was very knowledgeable and accommodating. This trip was slightly different to other Hop on Hop Off tours we have been on in other cities, whereby you would get off bus and explore a bit, then wait for the next bus, but on this one, our driver waited for us and then we continued to the next point of interest. The highlight of the tour was seeing the duck parade at Peabody Hotel. The tour included a fly by Graceland, however the driver was so accommodating dropping us off and arranging to pick us up again after 4 hours, which allowed us time to explore on our own. This was well worth the money and loads to see. Don’t miss it on your visit to Memphis. Read more Written April 16, 2023

They came to pick us up at our downtown Memphis hotel - and the two of us were the only one on the bus to GL! We couldn't believe that a tour company would do that for just the two of us! After I registered and paid for 4 people I had to call the office to book my tour - at that point I was told that the buses would stop at 2:30 that day instead of 5. If I had known that before I'd paid I would have booked with a different tour operator. 2. I was told we'd be picked up at the hotel at 9:45 am- I called there office at 10 asking why we hadn't been picked up yet - they acted like they didn't know but would send a bus- 10:20 were picked up for an already shortened day. 3. The bus was old, noisy and ride was very very uncomfortable. the driver had no PA system and had to yell out the points of interest as she drove. The ride back from Graceland to the hotel was actually quite dangerous and scary - speeding over speed bumps, cornering at excess speeds. 4. I would recommend that everyone who reads this review should book with a different city tour operator. Read more Written November 13, 2022
