13 Top French Wine Regions, Cities & Villages to Visit 2024

13 Top Wine Destinations in France: Regions, Cities & Villages • Winetraveler

Best Wine Regions in France to Go Wine Tasting in 2024

France is currently the world’s most popular tourist destination boasting over 80 million visitors each year. Many people think of Paris when they think of France, but the country also plays host to stunning wine regions, destinations, breathtaking mountains, beautiful beaches, and many of the world’s best museums and galleries, making it a travel hotspot for people of all ages and backgrounds.

At Winetraveler, we try to go beyond the wine when we discuss travel destinations. Wine is simply the lubricant that enhances a journey as one traverses a country. That’s why this list includes some of the best wine destinations in France that aren’t just wine-producing areas. It includes cities, towns, and small villages within France that serve as great wine destinations themselves, or work as ideal stopping points along a more holistic itinerary when visiting nearby French wine regions.

Whether you’re looking for your next summer beach holiday, a fun winter trip, or a cultural excursion, France is one of the best countries you can choose. With multiple international airports to fly into and plenty of great cities, towns, and villages to check out, you can have an unforgettable wine trip in this wondrous country.

Top Wine Regions & Cities in France to Visit This Year

Paris is still the main go-to spot for tourists in France. Couples and families can find plenty of romantic sights, the cuisine is incredible, there are plenty of galleries and museums to check out, and Disneyland Paris is only a short train ride away if kids are in tow.

Best Wine Destinations in France: Drinking Champagne ontop of the Eiffel Tower

It also helps that you can visit Paris for surprisingly cheap. Although the city is full of luxurious hotels, you can also find plenty of cheap hotels and Airbnbs if you’re on a budget. You can also choose between world-renowned Michelin-star restaurants and high-end wine bars, or cheap food options. From drinking Champagne on top of the Eiffel Tower, to sunset cruises on the river Seine, there are plenty of interesting sights and activities. If you’re interested in visiting Paris for a few days, we’ve included a link to our tested travel guide below, featuring all of our favorite hotels, restaurants, and things to do.

RELATED: 2 Day Paris Itinerary: A First Timer’s Guide

Although Paris gets all the hype, Nice is arguably an even “nicer” place to visit. This city is situated on the French Riviera, meaning that you’ll be perfectly located between the beach and the French Alps. That means that you could easily spend one day lounging by clear turquoise-blue waters and the next hiking into the nearby mountains.

Nice is full of fun events, including the annual Nice Carnival in February and various festivals, concerts, and art exhibitions. It’s also a great place for history lovers due to sights such as the St Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral and Castle Hill Park. To make matters even sweeter, you can easily take a day trip to Monaco for gambling and fun as it’s only a 30-minute ride away. Alternatively, you can spend days enjoying the culinary delights, museums, and galleries of Nice.

Provence: Where to visit in France - Top wine destinations in France

Marseille is a beautiful spot in the Provence region and a perfect choice for those who want a lively yet scenic destination. Marseille is right by the beach and it’s also a hotspot for nature lovers as you can take in the scenery by windsurfing, mountain biking, sailing, or simply hiking through the nearby trails.

RELATED: Best Provence Wine Tastings, Tours & Vineyard Experiences

It’s also a great hub for day trips. You can use Marseille as a hub to take trips into the beautiful countryside of Provence, including towns like Gordes and Saignon. It’s also a short 30-minute drive from Massif des Calanques, one of the most incredible national parks in the entire country full of breathtaking natural sights.

Gordes France travel destination

Ok, we admit it. We love Provence. Moving on from larger cities in the region like Nice and Marseille, it’s well worth a stop at some of the smaller and truly picturesque hilltop villages. Gordes is one such village with all of the quaint, small-town, cobblestone street charm you can expect to find. For sweeping views of the Provencal countryside, affordable apéritifs and endless dry rosé wine by the glass, be sure to stop at boutique restaurant and bar La Trinquette , serving up modern French cuisine on one of the best balconies in the town.

RELATED: Top Luxury Resorts & Wineries To Visit in Provence

For an equally scenic and historic hilltop village not far from Gordes, be sure to stop by Bonnieux. We recommend planning a lunch in Gordes, followed by a wine tasting at nearby Domaine de la Citadelle , and ending with dinner at 2-star Michelin restaurant La Bastide de Capelongue .

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

Saint-Rémy Glanum Ruins in Provence

Not far from Gordes lies the utterly picturesque and historic village of Saint-Rémy. This small village folded into the sweeping green valleys of Provence has a big heart, beating with some of the best cuisine in the region, boutique wine shops, and ancient streets.

Historic is an understatement when mentioning Saint-Rémy. It was once the ancient Roman city of Glanum, and still plays host to its ruins and the quarry that was once used to build much of its stone structures. Moving on through the centuries, it became something of an artist and philosopher’s pilgrimage, with Van Gogh and others producing a number of famous works here. It’s also where Nostradamus was born, and you can still walk by what remains of that house today.

Wine lovers will already be familiar with the wine region of Bordeaux . But it’s also a city. This gorgeous French city is known as the wine capital of the world and you won’t be short on options whether you’re looking for a fancy wine bar, a wine-tasting event, or a tour of the nearby vineyards. It’s also one of the best places for foodies as it’s full of Michelin-star restaurants as well as plenty of more affordable options.

Even if you’re not looking for world-class wine and cuisine, you can find plenty of fun things to do here. The city is jam-packed with attractions such as the Water Mirror, Porte Cailhau, and many markets, museums, bars, and clubs. Alternatively, you could have a relaxing day biking along the waterfront and taking in the stunning architecture and great weather.

Champagne Wine Destination in France

Continuing on with wine-themed destinations, Champagne provides the perfect mix of delectable bubbles, luxurious architecture, unmatched scenery, and cataclysmic history. While you could easily spend several days staying in the region, it’s also easily accessible from Paris and makes for the perfect day or weekend trip. We discuss an ideal 2-day Champagne itinerary right here.

When we mention history in Champagne, we aren’t just talking about winemaking (though this is impressive in its own right), but it has also been a sought-after region for settlement dating  back well before the Celtic and Roman periods. In addition, it has seen its fair share of warfare, with the World War I battlefields of Verdun and others just a short drive away from Champagne’s vineyard setting. This is a great region to visit for the sophisticated wine lover and history buff with a keen interest in sparkling wine.

If you’re a fan of winter sports, Chamonix is the place for you. This world-renowned resort destination is located right on the border between France, Italy, and Switzerland and allows you to ski and snowboard through the alps while enjoying the amazing mountain sights. You can also take a cable car into Italy or check out attractions such as the Parc de Merlet or the ice sculptures of Grotte de Glace.

However, Chamonix isn’t just for winter lovers. In the summer you can go here to hike through the Alps, mountain bike through the trails, or even rent an e-bike to take in the sights. It’s also a hotspot for paragliding, golfing, and watersports. It’s basically the perfect playground for outdoor activities throughout any season.

Cannes is a top resort town on the French Riviera, meaning that you’ll get excellent beaches and stunning natural views if you choose to stay here. The town is mainly known for the Cannes Film Festival, which allows the general public to check out new films via open-air screenings. However, it also offers plenty of other activities.

Whether you want to go sailing, check out historical sites, or just chill on the beach and enjoy some ice cream, you can have an amazing time in Cannes. It’s also close to golf courses, national parks, and other French hotspots like Nice and Saint-Tropez, so you have plenty of choices for day trips.

Nimes is an underrated gem in France, especially for history lovers. You’ll feel like you’ve been transported into another country here due to the abundance of Roman architecture. It’s often described as the most Roman city in France due to sights such as the Arena of Nimes, Jardin de La Fontaine, Temple de Diane, and the Maison Carrée Roman temple.

If you’ve ever felt like attending an event in a Roman amphitheater, the Arena of Nimes now hosts shows from world-famous music artists such as Foo Fighters, Gorillaz, and Deep Purple. It’s also used as a bullfighting arena during May. Outside of the Roman sights, you can find plenty of museums, art galleries, and delicious French food stalls. You can also take trips to Marseille, Massif des Calanques, and the Provence countryside.

The Loire Valley

Loire Valley France Wine Destination

From Vouvray, to Touraine, Saumer, Sancerre and beyond, the Loire Valley is a Winetraveler’s paradise. Whether you’re into red wines, white wines, sparkling wines or rosé, there is something for everybody’s palate in the Loire. Aside from high-quality juice, it’s also home to the highest density of castles in France as well as the country’s longest river.

If you’re interested in feeling like royalty for a day (or several), while enjoying premium Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, and even Chenin Blanc, the Loire is for you. Wine lovers will also appreciate the quality of sparkling wine (called Crémant here) coming out of the Saumer sub-region if you know where to look.

FUN FACT: The Loire Valley is France’s #2 sparkling wine-producing region by quantity.

One of the most underrated wine regions in France, Languedoc is well worth a visit for any number of reasons. From a scenic perspective, Languedoc offers up a little bit of everything. Here you can expect rolling hills and valleys as far as the eye can see, tiny picturesque French villages, snow-capped mountains, and turquoise blue coastal views. Therefore, it’s an ideal French wine destination that works for any time of year.

Most consumers who are new to the wine world have rarely sampled wines from the Languedoc-Roussillon region (or maybe you have and not known it), but it’s actually France’s largest wine-producing region and vineyard area. Wine production in Languedoc dates back (as far as we know) to the Greeks during the 5th century BC.

Lille is another one of France’s most underrated cities. Lille is the lively capital of the Hauts-de-France in Northern France known for its amazing local markets, delicious food stalls, and fun nightlife. As well as sampling amazing French cheese it’s also a hotspot for beer and waffles, which might have something to do with its proximity to Belgium.

The city is incredibly affordable compared to other cities such as Paris and Lyon while still offering plenty to do. It’s also an excellent hub for day trips. Not only is Paris just a one-hour train ride away, but you can also cross the border into Belgium and visit gems such as Brussels or Bruges.

France is home to some of the world’s best wines, and its vast wine regions produce between seven to eight billion bottles a year, accounting for close to 30 percent of the world’s wine output. The rich soil, known as terroir in French, idyllic weather conditions, strict government standards, and centuries of perfecting growing, aging, and bottling techniques, is why French wine is so highly revered. Burgundy, Bordeaux, Provence, Champagne, and the Loire are the main wine regions of France and produce the best wines.

Wine aficionados usually have France on the top of their list for wine tours, and we have collected a list of the best wine tours in France for their pleasure.

Based in Dijon, Authentica Wine Tours specializes in tours of the Burgundy region, where some of the most exclusive and expensive French wines come from. Authentica was created in 2008 by Nicolas Guidard, a Burgundy native whose father and grandfather worked the land. He wanted to share his love and knowledge of Burgundy and its fine wines and cuisine. Over the years, Guidard hired experts in wine, geology, culture, and history to round out the company and introduce innovative tours that weren’t done before.

Authentica offers private and small group tours, with half-day, full-day, and multi-day excursions and prices ranging from 65 euros per person for the half-day group tour to a 2-day private tour for 1,180 euros for two people.

The most prestigious tour is the 1-day Grand Crus, The Best Of Burgundy , which includes the top Burgundy wines with an option to taste 6, 10, and the ultimate indulgence, 15, and a three-course lunch and cheese course, at the estate of an esteemed Burgundy wine vintner. Other tours on their list include the full-day Passion tour, which is a visit to the city and surrounding area of Beaune, with tastings of five to seven red and white wines, the full-day Burgundy Gourmet with a tasting of up to 14 wines, five culinary sites featuring cheese, chocolate, charcuteries, and pastries, and a Burgundy cuisine lunch either prepared by a private chef or at a Michelin star restaurant.

All tours use late-model luxury vans with air conditioning.

The O’Chateau full-day (8 a.m. to 6 p.m.) small group Champagne tour includes transportation to and from Paris in a late model, air-conditioned van with an expert and personable sommelier leading the tour. The experience consists of three guided visits to various Champagne houses and their cellars and facilities. The first visit is to a major Champagne house, where you go underground to the deep chalk caves and learn about the process of making Champagne from grape to glass. The second visit is to a private Champagne house where you also have a lunch feast in their dining room. The last visit is to a smaller Champagne house. The tour also includes three Champagne tastings at each location and coffee and croissants in the van for breakfast. Tours can also be privatized.

While in Paris, enjoy wine tastings and classes at the handsome wine bar and private rooms at O’Chateau, conveniently located near the Louvre.

Loire Valley

Vincent Delaby worked in the tourism sector for 15 years before embarking on a new career inspired by his family heritage, wine tours. He first developed his wine expertise and craft by working in wine cellars and vineyards, followed by wine tourism training and receiving a Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) certificate.

Delaby’s company, VinoLoire , provides various half-day and full-day Loire wine tours for small groups and private tours. The half-day excursions go to either the Vouvray and Montlouis regions in the morning or the Chinon and Azay Touraine in the afternoon. Visits include tastings of red, white, and rose wines, paired with local cheeses and charcuterie, an explanation of the winemaking process, and a walk through the vineyards. Full-day tours go to the same locations as the half-day tours and then extend to the Sancerre and Pouilly regions. Full-day tours can be arranged from Paris.

VinoLoire offers other fun activities in the Loire in addition to the wine tours, including cooking lessons, cheese and wine pairings, food and market visits, a chateau tour with a certified historian, and a wine tasting cruise on an authentic wood boat.

Kanpai Tourisme

Various areas.

Specializing in tours of Lyon and regions nearby, Kanpai Tourisme has an impressive list of small group and private wine tours. The Macon and Beaujolais areas produce some of the best Chardonnay and Gamay wines, including Macon Villages, Pouilly Fuisse, St Veran, Fleurie, Brouilly, and Moulin-a-Vent. On the full-day Macon and Beaujolais tour , from 9 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., you are first driven through the Macon Route des Vins road with magnificent scenery and Solutre Roch, a 1,600-foot-tall natural boulder made of limestone. The tastings begin with a selection of white wines from a family estate in the Pouilly Fuisse village, while you learn about the wine-making and barrel-aging process of Chardonnay. After the tasting, lunch is at a bistro with Beaujolais cuisine (lunch is not included in the tour price). In the afternoon, you will experience another scenic ride through the Beaujolais wine roads. You will then visit another family-owned winery producing Beaujolais wine, which uses Gamay grapes, followed by tastings of “crus” red wines.

The Northern Cote du Rhone wine region is the source of the much-beloved Shiraz and Syrah wines such as Cote Rotie, Condrieu, and Saint-Joseph. Kanpai Tourisme offers a half-day Shiraz and Syrah tour consisting of visits to two wineries and five to six tastings at each.

Chateauneuf Du Pape Wine Tour

The much-celebrated Chateauneuf du Pape wine is one of the oldest wines in the world, dating back from the Gallo-Roman period from the first century to the fifth century. The private Chateauneuf du Pape Tour from Planet Provence provides a historic look at the region with a highly trained wine guide plus tastings. The guide will pick you up and return you to your location within a 6-mile radius of Aix en Provence.

Owner Brice de Monplanet and his wife have made Provence their home since 1997, and Brice had an impressive career for 15 years working for international wine companies. Then he switched gears, training in oenology at the prestigious Montpellier Ludivinum School. Continuing with his passion for wine, he started Planet Provence.

A Scenic Road

Xavier Cabanne grew up in Paris then moved to the Chicago area as an adult. A few years ago, Cabanne reconnected with his love of France and started A Scenic Road , a company that plans private, customized tours of France for small groups. In 1898, Cabanne’s great-great-grandmother started a small winery in the Burgundy region, and it’s still in operation today. With his vast insider knowledge of wine, Cabanne can design a perfect wine tour of Burgundy, Champagne, and Bordeaux with tastings at smaller and less known wine producers. In addition, A Scenic Road can also organize fun activities such as countryside bike rides, mustard factory tours, wine museum visits, and dinners at a Michelin star restaurant.

Pro Tip: Wearing flat, covered shoes or sneakers is highly recommended, and also bring a jacket or sweater even in summer because the wine cellars are cold and damp.

Wine routes: 8 exceptional itineraries to discover the vineyards of France

Most historic: alsace wine route.

The oldest wine tourist route in France labeled ‘Vignobles & Découvertes’, will celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2023. Here’s an ideal way to experience this Alsatian route and follow the 170km historic road which features 51 grands crus from seven grape varieties: from Marlenheim in the north to Thann in the south, admire the castles and flowery villages, several of which are classified ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’ (the most beautiful villages in France), as you pass by the sunny hillsides. Discover Eguisheim, whose medieval streets wind around a castle. Bergheim, AKA ‘capital’ of Gewurtztraminer with its half-timbered 15th century houses. And Riquewihr where the many vaulted cellars offer several varieties of wine. The villages are surrounded by walking trails such as in Andlau where markers guide budding artists to sketch the landscapes. Or perhaps you prefer to crisscross the hills by bike (including electric), as the cycle route of the Alsace vineyards runs parallel with the road. It’s a gentle way to explore this area that’s in line with the spirit of the Alsatian winegrowers who were the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture since 1925!

Most oceanic: Bordeaux wine route

Between the Garonne river and the Atlantic Ocean, Bordeaux, with its internationally renowned Grands Crus, forms the largest vineyard of fine wines in the world . Follow its five wine routes, from the Médoc route and its 60 Grands Crus Classés, to the mythical Saint-Emilion-Pomerol-Fronsac road, and nourish your soul as well as your taste buds. There are castles of all styles, bastides (fortified towns), and even a Paleolithic site in Blaye where there is also a UNESCO-classified citadel. Heritage is an integral part of the landscape but there is always the inspiration to discover the world of wine and take your time to relish every moment. Take a donkey ride, explore the contemporary art trails, follow the bike circuits, and even enjoy some time on the beach in the Médoc with visits to cellars and gourmet aperitifs in castles... And the ultimate delight – sensory experiences which combined wine workshops and relaxation, with sessions of sophrology, tai chi or well-being in the spas which blossom in the middle of the vineyards.

Most unique: Burgundy wine route

From the cradle of Chablis in the Yonne to the Mâconnais, Burgundy wines represent just 3% of the vineyards of France. But its almost 100 appellations of controlled origin (AOC) include more than a third of grands crus, making it the kingdom of superlative wines! Among the six routes to follow by car, boat or hot air balloon, the route of the Grands Crus of Burgundy is the most sought-after vintage. It features rows of vines separated by low walls and dry-stone enclosures which create 1247 ‘climats’, and these micro-terroirs are all UNESCO listed . This is the perfect route to discover the most emblematic wines including Gevrey-Chambertin, the village has nine grand crus and 26 premiers crus, and the Château de Clos de Vougeot , guardian of the memory of the monk winegrowers... En route, unravel the secrets of the French gastronomic meal in the brand new Cité Internationale de la Gastronomie et des Vin de Dijon. And get tipsy on the beauty of the courtyard of the Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune and its multicoloured tile roofs in the purest flamboyant Gothic style…

Most sparkling: Champagne wine route

Champagne is both an exceptional wine - and a region. The wine heritage of this area is classified by UNESCO in recognition of its historic hillsides, champagne houses, and cellars in Mareuil sur Aÿ, Epernay and Reims! But did you know that in the Cenozoic era, some 65 million years ago, Champagne was under a tropical sea populated by giant snails? In Fleury-la-Rivière, at the Legrand-Latour Champagne Domaine, combine the discovery of wine with paleontology: the Cave aux Coquillages has an extraordinary collection of fossils exposed on the rocky walls of the cellar which explains the origins of the minerality of Champagne. Then explore the underground chalk cathedrals where the precious bottles age away from light and heat. In Reims, dive 18 metres underground in the classified Gallo-Roman chalk beds (fourth century) at Maison Taittinger, and in Epernay hop on a small train to crisscross the 18 kilometres of cellars of Maison Mercier and admire the carvings and illuminations.

Most colourful: Provence Wine Route

Provence makes you think of the sound of Cicadas of course, but also of colours: the blue of the sky and the sea, the green of its vines and vegetation... and the pink of its rosé wine! When you think of the wines of Provence, it’s the iconic, fresh rosé that springs immediately to mind. 150 million bottles are produced in Provence each year, and the region is the leading French producer of AOC rosé wine. But the colour chart of Provençal wine routes is as varied as the landscapes - from the shores of the Mediterranean to the green interior of Provence. In Cassis, take a kayak or sailboat ride in the famous creeks, the Calanques, and learn about the white wines of Provence including the Cassis AOC, a deliciously fruity wine. And in the Massif des Maures, between Saint-Tropez and Hyères, immerse yourself in the vineyards of the Côtes-de-Provence La Londe, to discover delectable rosés and red wines. And as you go, discover the heritage of the region: the Roman amphitheater of Fréjus, a classified city of art; the Cistercian abbey of Thoronet; the mansions of Arles, the sunny city at the gates of the Camargue, and Aix-en Provence, at the foot of the Sainte-Victoire mountain, a land of painters and AOCs where rosé, white and red wines are produced…

Most royal: Loire Valley Wine Route

Discover the longest wine route in France : 800 kilometers from the mouth of the river Loire in the heart of the Berry region. There are no less than five vineyards (51 appellations of all colours) that nestle along the curves of the royal river: Nantes, kingdom of Muscadet; Anjou; Saumurois; Touraine, country of the AOC Chinon and Bourgueil; and the Centre-Loire, from Sologne to Sancerrois. This is a rich area to discover a variety of activities including bike rides, walks, gabare trips (traditional flat-bottomed boats) or electric scooter rides to explore the riverbanks populated by birds and wildlife, troglodyte cellars dug into the tufa (limestone), French-style formal gardens and legendary castles where you can enjoy the vineyards. In Chenonceau, enjoy tastings under the stars on summer evenings, and in Chambord, you can adopt a vine! 14 hectares featuring five grape varieties including Romorantin which was introduced by King François 1st in the sixteenth century, have been replanted to be farmed organically. Take a tasting of white wine which has a golden colour and aromas of peach and pear. Cheers!

Most unusual: Occitanie Wine Route

With 260,000 hectares (including 36% of all organic plots of French vineyards, and combining 87 appellations - including 51 PDOs, the vine shapes the nature of Occitanie. From the wines of the south-west to the sun-drenched wines of Languedoc and Roussillon, this wine routes offers an incredible variety of flavours to explore as you roam. Take a walk guided by winegrowers on the mountainside in Banyuls. OEnorandos® in the Hérault has some twenty labeled walking routes that take in arty cellars, winegrower architecture and scenic points of view. Enjoy aperitifs with winegrowers on mini cruises, enjoy a concert in Gaillac in the Tarn, take a promenade towed by gentle draft horses at the foot of the Cévennes... The most unusual? A tasting of organic Languedoc wines on the roof of the Abbey of Valmagne, one of the most beautiful in Occitanie… or a visit to the only vineyard in France classified as a historical monument. Located in the Gers, its grape varieties are more than 200 years old having survived the phylloxera disaster that affected many vineyards in France.

Most intimate: Corsican wine route

Sciacarellu or vermentinu... These names of Corsican grape varieties remind you of the melodies of polyphonies, the sound of traditional Corsican songs, heirs of a thousand-year-old custom that dates to the Phoenicians (4th century BC). To appreciate the diversity of Corsica’s wines, robust reds, rosé, sweet muscats and whites, simply travel around the Island of Beauty in the footsteps of the 9 AOC vineyards nestled mainly along the coasts. Explore the terraced vineyards of Cap Corse on horseback; or take a hike and aperitif at sunset on the hillsides of the Ajaccio region. Visit the perched vineyards of Bastia and learn about the island’s wines with a renowned sommelier. Or head to the hills of Patrimonio, where the most famous wines are made from niellucciu, a red grape variety... En route, indulge in tastings of local products , cold meats, and tasty cheeses that Corsica is famous for, meet with passionate winegrowers and discover unique sites such as the Calanches of Piana or the needles of Bavella.

The Complete Guide to France's Wine Regions

french wine regions tour

Matteo Columbo/Getty Images

There are few regions of France that don't cultivate vines for the production of wine. While most people have heard of Burgundy, Champagne, and Bordeaux, there are a few lesser-known wine regions to consider when exploring the country. If you're a beginner or want to develop your knowledge further, consider taking a guided French wine tour; these can be a great way to overcome any sense of intimidation and learn some essential wine-tasting "skills." Life is hard, right?

As for when to embark on a tour, we recommend going in mid-spring to late September. In September and October, lively harvest festivals around France offer an authentic and engaging way to participate in local winemaking culture.

Oliver Strewe / Getty Images

More than any of France's wine regions, Bordeaux has probably been the most successful in exporting its brand. You'll find wines from the region in supermarkets and wine shops around the world, but did you know that many of the best don't carry the label "Bordeaux" at all?

Winemaking areas ("appellations" in French) that are especially prized and worth visiting include St-Emilion, Médoc, Pomerol, Margaux, and Sauternes. These are easily accessible from Bordeaux by train, car, or tour bus, and you can easily book wine tours through the Bordeaux Tourist Office .

Typical Wines and Grape Varieties: The region mostly produces red wines made from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc grapes. It's also famous for its sweet white wines, especially Sauternes and Pessac-Leognan.

Touring & Tasting: Famous winemaking "chateaux" to visit or tour include Cheval-Blanc, Mouton Rothschild, Château-Margaux, Chateau Yquem, and Haut-Brion. Many of the more prestigious wineries don't offer guided tours, but you can see them from the outside and learn about their history during a guided tour.

Burgundy is one of France's oldest and most prestigious winemaking regions, with a history of vine cultivation stretching back some 1,000 years. Monks based in abbeys tended vineyards along the Saone River from at least 500, and the resulting knowledge is remarkable.

Burgundy is home to more than 100 different appellations, distributed across five major sub-regions: Chablis, the Côte Chalonnaise, Mâconnais, Côte de Nuits, and Côte de Beaune. Many of the region's finest wines are produced on tiny plots whose yields are quite small, making them expensive and sought-after by collectors.

Typical Wines and Grape Varieties: Burgundy produces some 15 million cases of red and white wines every year, with reds made almost exclusively from Pinot Noir grape varietals and whites from 100 percent Chardonnay. The region is also noted for a sparkling white called Crémant de Bourgogne, an accessible and popular alternative to Champagne.

Touring & Tasting: The region can be difficult to navigate alone since many wineries offer only limited access to the public. If you don't want to rent a car and go it alone, we recommend staying in Beaune and joining one of the many excellent wine tours promoted by the tourist office ; these will allow you to more confidently explore some of the region's best wineries. Alternatively, the Burgundy Wine School offers tastings and tours ranging from 90-minute sessions to full-day regional visits at top wineries.

Loire Valley

 Pixabay/Public domain

Most people associate the Loire Valley with fairy tale castles ; though they wouldn't be wrong, it also produces some of France's finest wines, from crisp whites to complex reds and sparkling varieties called crémants .

The region is studded with miles of vineyards growing in close reach of the Loire and Cher rivers. It is divided into four sub-regions: Nantes, Touraine, Anjou-Saumur, and the "Central Vineyards" area.

Typical Wines and Grape Varieties: Some of the more famous Loire Valley wine appellations include Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, which produce dry and floral whites made with Sauvignon Blanc grapes. Saumur is an appellation that makes sweet and sparkling white wines as well as reds produced with Cabernet Franc grapes. Chinon, an appellation near Touraine, makes mostly red wines with Cabernet Franc.

Touring & Tasting: Local tourist offices in Saumur , Sancerre , and Touraine are good starting points for touring local wineries. You can generally find maps of vineyard routes and details of wineries open to the public. Staff members can also help you find a tour or guided excursion that suits your budget and tastes. In Sancerre, the  Maison des Sancerre  offers information and educational exhibits on local wines, plus tips on the best wineries to visit in the area.

Rhone Valley

Tambako the Jaguar / licensed under  CC BY-ND 2.0

Many tourists overlook the Rhone Valley when planning a wine-focused trip to France, but they shouldn't. Overall, this is the country's second-most-important wine-producing region, boasting 45 appellations. The fertile valley and river of the same name is home to many lesser-known but superb wines.

Typical Wines and Grape Varieties: These include reds and whites from the Côtes du Rhone appellation; elegant, balanced whites produced in the Tournon sur Rhone appellation; and sophisticated reds bearing the Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Côte-Rôtie labels. Somewhat confusingly, while some light Beaujolais red wines are made in adjoining Burgundy, others are produced in the Rhone Valley.

Reds are primarily made from Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre grapes, while whites are derived from Viognier, Roussanne, Grenache blanc, and Marsanne varietals.

Touring & Tasting: The old Gallo-Roman city of Lyon makes an ideal base for touring the region. From here, you can easily embark on guided tours exploring the region's 14 different wine routes, or rent a car if you prefer to go it alone. We particularly recommend the Vienne and Côte-Rôtie coach tour, which brings you to one of the region's prettiest Gallo-Roman cities and nearby vineyards to taste five prized red wines.

Of course, we don't have to tell you what the Champagne region is famous for: a dry, bubbly sparkling white that has conquered the world. The interesting tidbit is that Champagne didn't start out by making sparkling wines deliberately. It was a happy accident that resulted from excess pressure developing within bottles.

When winemakers discovered that the bubbles could yield something irresistible, they began adding them on purpose. While many other regions in France (and worldwide) make sparkling wines, only those produced in Champagne have the legal right to use the name.

Champagne is easily accessible from Paris via a short train or car ride to the northeast.

Typical Wines and Grape Varieties: Most sparkling whites from Champagne are made with Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay grapes. Veuve Clicquot, Moët et Chandon, Ruinart, Krug, Pommery, and Dom Pérignon are among the most famous local producers.

Touring & Tasting: Start your regional tour in Reims, a gorgeous cathedral city with large underground networks of centuries-old chalk cellars. These are home to some of the region's most-prized champagne makers, including Pommery, Taittinger, and Bollinger (the last one was made famous by James Bond movies). While you're there, be sure to take a guided tour of the Veuve-Cliquot and Ruinart cellars.

After exploring Reims, head over to nearby Epernay , where producers such as Moët and Chandon, Dom Pérignon, and Mercier oversee some of the region's most prestigious vineyards and cellars. We especially recommend the champagne-tasting tours from Rue des Vignerons . Led by experts, their tours generally include educational cellar visits (some with audio tours) and tastings of several different champagnes.

The northeastern French region of Alsace  is one of France's richest wine-producing areas. Its prized "wine route" stretches for some 100 miles north to south (east of the Rhine river), and boasts pretty Alsatian villages surrounded by rolling vineyards. The region has historically alternated between belonging to France and Germany, giving it a distinctively hybrid culture. This extends to winemaking as well, and the region's many rustic winstubs (wine cellars or taverns) offer visitors an authentic way to taste local wines paired with hearty Alsatian cuisine.

Typical Wines and Grape varieties: Alsace's wine country features remarkable diversity, even though 90 percent of the finished products are whites. Twelve different varieties of grapes are grown in vineyards here. These include Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Gris or Tokay, Pinot Blanc, and Chardonnay. Some of the more famous Alsatian wines to try include those from the Alsace AOC appellation, the sparkling white Cremant d'Alsace, and Riesling and Gewürtztraminer from the town of Eguisheim, near the storybook town of Colmar .

Touring & Tasting: You can explore the Alsace Wine Route by using cities including Strasbourg (in the north), Colmar (central), and Mulhouse (to the south) as bases. Their respective tourism boards offer guided wine tours and visits to some of the area's best cellars.

Wine Regions in France Map

Wine Regions in France Map

You can find good French wine production in almost every region of France (although the North coast doesn’t have as favorable conditions as the rest of the country).

Most people associate wine in France with the famous French wine regions of Champagne, Bordeaux, and even Burgundy , and these are considered some of the best wines in the world. However, there are so many other amazing wine areas in France that shouldn’t be overlooked during your wine travel.

On this Best Wine Regions in France Map , you can see just how many options you have to explore, taste, and experience good French wine. The best wine regions France has to offer are the following:

  • Loire Valley
  • Côtes du Rhône
  • Languedoc – Roussillon

TIP: Check out how to serve French wine at the correct temperature to enhance its taste

1. Wine of Bordeaux

Saint Emilion in Bordeaux Wine Region

The Bordeaux Wine Region is not only one of the most famous French wine regions but is also one of the largest. Located in South West France, the fact that it’s located right along the sea gives the wine unique mineral qualities but also a direct advantage in shipping to other destinations. The wine of Bordeaux is so good that many estates get to sell it as a ‘Grand Cru’ (one of the highest wine standards one can achieve).

There are actually several wine regions in Bordeaux aside from the town of Bordeaux itself, all offering excellent selections. Popular subregions of the Bordeaux wine region to visit are the Route des Châteaux du Médoc (on the Left Bank of the Gironde Estuary), Saint-Émilion (in the Libournais district of Bordeaux), and Graves (on the Left Bank of the Garonne River).

The wine of Bordeaux is often dominated by reds and blends. You can typically expect to find high prices here, but you’ll be rewarded with high-quality wine for the price.

Best Bordeaux Wine Tour: Médoc Wine Region

If you want to experience several vineyards, consider doing this afternoon wine-tasting tour starting from Bordeaux. You’ll visit two separate Bordeaux châteaux, have 4 Bordeaux wine tastings, learn about the local wines, and see the stunning scenery of the Médoc wine region – Book this half-day tour to the Médoc Wine Region .

Other Wine Tours in the Bordeaux Wine Region

  • Saint-Émilion half-day wine tour
  • Saint-Émilion and Médoc full-day wine experience

If you prefer to explore the Bordeaux Wine Region on a self-guided tour, pick the wineries that appeal to you most from this list .

2. Wine of Burgundy

Burgundy Wine Region

The Burgundy Wine Region is, in our opinion, the best wine region in France. It is found near Eastern-Central France and, like many of the other wine regions in France, is comprised of several sub-regions and towns. The Wine Region of Burgundy includes famous sub-regions such as Châblis, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise, Maconnais , and Beaujolais .

If you like the idea of road-tripping in France , consider this Route des Grands Crus road trip from Beaune to Dijon or vice-versa. The Route des Grands Crus in Burgundy is one of the most famous wine trails in France.

The wine of Burgundy is extremely complex and, therefore, often very expensive. Luckily, you can also find very affordable, quality wines here as well. The region of Burgundy has some excellent French white wines (made from chardonnay), French red wines (made from pinot noir), and some great sparkling wines and rosés as well.

TIP: while touring the area, don’t miss the beautiful villages of the Burgundy Wine Region

Best Burgundy Wine Tour: Côte De Nuits Wine Region

If you are looking for wine tours in Burgundy, consider this half-day tour in the Côte de Nuits region, starting from Dijon. Explore various stunning vineyard towns along the way, visit the medieval Château du Clos de Vougeot, enjoy a stroll through the vineyards, and sample a selection of red and white wines, including the region’s celebrated pinot noirs – Book this half-day tour in Côte de Nuits from Dijon

Other Wine Tours in the Burgundy Wine Region

  • From Beaune: Côte de Beaune bike tour with lunch and tastings
  • Châblis and Northern Burgundy full-day wine tour
  • Full-day private tour in Côte de Beaune

If you prefer to explore one of the best wine regions in France on a self-guided tour, pick the wineries that appeal to you most from this list .

3. Wine of Provence

Wine of Provence

If you are heading to the Mediterranean coast in France, then consider touring the Provence Wine Region , located only a few kilometers Northwest of Nice . While a lesser-known and not as popular as other wine regions in France, the area of Provence is simply stunning, and you can find some fantastic wines here, like so much of France.

There are nine wine regions in Provence, with distinct characteristics that affect the grapes and wines made in them: Côtes de Provence, Coteaux-d’Aix-en-Provence, Coteaux-Varois-en-Provence, Les-Baux-de-Provence, Cassis, Bandol, Palette, Bellet , and Coteaux-de-Pierrevert .

Due to the warm climate and proximity to the sea, these South of France vineyards have a wide range of excellent grapes that are often full-bodied and absolutely perfect table wine options!

You can find red wines like syrah, cabernet sauvignon, and cinsaut here, as well as whites like ugni blanc, sémillon, clairette and some absolutely fantastic rosés.

Provence is dotted with vineyards and wine shops all over, many of which offer their wine-tasting experiences.

Best Provence Wine Tour: Côtes de Provence – St. Victoire Winemaking Region

This half-day tour from Aix-en-Provence (morning or afternoon) with transportation explores the Côtes de Provence-St Victoire winemaking region. Visit the landscapes that inspired Cézanne, learn about the unique soil and climate of the Provencal landscape, and sample exquisite wines in two traditional wineries – Book this half-day tour Côtes de Provence – St. Victoire

Other Wine Tours in the Provence Wine Region

  • From Marseille: full-day tour through the vineyards of Bandol and Cassis
  • From Aix-en-Provence: half-day wine tour in Bandol and Cassis

If you prefer to explore one of the Southern France wine regions in Provence on a self-guided tour, pick the wineries that appeal to you most from this list .

4. Wine of Loire Valley

Wine of Loire Valley

Another major producer and one of the largest wine regions of France is the Loire Valley, where you can find some of the best wines in France. The Loire Valley Wine Region is divided into five sub-regions and 58 AOC: Pays Nantais, Anjou-Saumur, Touraine, Centre, and Auvergne.

If you are looking for lighter wines, these French vineyards are right up your alley. There are great selections of lighter red wines, delicate, fruity white wines, sweet rosés, and a large production of sparkling wines.

If you are based in the French capital and looking to experience the wine culture of France, consider a Loire Valley wine tour from Paris, or just visit one of the many wineries in Loire Valley yourself on a self-guided wine tour. Being so close to Paris, the Loire Valley is a fantastic day trip from Paris or a weekend getaway from Paris option.

Wine Tours in the Loire Valley Wine Region

  • From Tours: Loire Valley wine tour in Vouvray and Montlouis
  • From Paris: Chambord Castle and Loire Valley wines

If you prefer to explore this extended area of the wine map of France on a self-guided tour, pick the wineries that appeal to you most from this list .

5. Côtes du Rhône Wine

Côtes du Rhone Area in France

Another best wine region France has to offer is found in the Rhône Valley, in Southeastern France, scattered around the meandering Rhône River. From Vienne to the Luberon, this major export region of France is so large it is split into the “ ‘Northern Rhone “ ‘ and the “ ‘Southern Rhone” areas.

The wines of the Rhône Valley, also known as Côtes du Rhône Wine , are often some of the most expensive wines you can buy. Heading South, white wines are the prominent grape, such as grenache blanc, marsanne, roussanne, and viognier. However, don’t skimp on the red wines, such as the syrah and wonderful blends.

Best Côtes du Rhône Wine Tour: Half-day Tour around Châteauneuf-du-Pape

This full-day French wine tasting and tour (lunch included) starting from Avignon takes you around Châteauneuf du Pape, visiting four of the main appellations of Côte du Rhône: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas/Vacqueyras, Séguret.  The tour includes a delicious lunch at a restaurant in Châteaneuf-du-Pape – Book this day tour to Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Other Wine Tours in the Rhône Valley

  • From Lyon: Rhône Crus wine tour

If you prefer to explore one of the loveliest areas on the France wine map on a self-guided tour, pick the wineries that appeal to you most from this list .

6. Wines of Languedoc–Roussillon

Languedoc Wine Region

The Languedoc–Roussillon Wine Region , while not as famous (by name alone) as some of the other best wine regions in France to visit, is actually one of the largest wine-producing regions in France by vineyard surface area and produces massive amounts of wine annually.

These South of France vineyards are often known as some of the best wines at really affordable prices and include merlot, cabernet, and syrah. There are plenty of quality whites as well, such as sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, grenache, and muscat blanc.

Best Wine Tours in the Languedoc-Roussillon Wine Region

  • From Montpellier: Pic de Saint-Loup wine tour

If you prefer to explore one of the most interesting Southern France wine regions on a self-guided tour, pick the wineries that appeal to you most from this list .

7. Wine of Alsace

Alsace Wine Region

The Alsace Wine Region is another beautiful area to explore. Being so close to Germany, the region of Alsace shares many characteristics with its Eastern neighbor, from its latticed buildings to its wine production techniques.

This is one of the best wine regions to visit in France because it combines history, culture, and delicious wines. The wines of Alsace are often dry white wines, sparkling sweet varieties, and rosés. You can find delicious rieslings, gewürztraminers, and pinot gris. The land and climate primarily lend themselves to white wines, but you can still find some sweeter reds as well as roses in Alsace as well.

The best way to explore it is by following the Alsace Wine Route , a fun road trip itinerary that combines fairytale Alsace villages and great food and wine. There are also many half-day or day wine tours with departures from Strasbourg and Colmar .

The Best Alsace Wine Tour: Half-Day Wine Tour from Colmar

If you are looking for wine tastings in Alsace, this tour starts in the gorgeous town of Colmar and journeys along the Alsace Wine Route. Your wine tasting in Alsace tour will have you completely enchanted with this part of France. You’ll be educated on a plethora of Alsace wines to round out your wine tasting in Alsace – Book this half-day Alsace wine tour from Colmar

  • From Strasbourg: Alsace Wine Route half-day wine tour
  • From Colmar: Alsace Wine Route full-day wine tour

8. Champagne Wine Region

Champagne Vineyards France

The Champagne Wine Region just might be one of the most famous on the French wine regions map, if not even the world. While many vineyards in the world produce sparkling wine, it can only be labeled as ‘ champagne wine ‘ if it was produced in the historical Champagne region.

The Champagne region is located in the North East section of France, not far from Belgium and Luxembourg. It is one of the best French wine regions to visit near Paris, with some of the best wineries in France.

While the most famous wine of Champagne is champagne itself, you can actually also find pinot noir and chardonnay in the Champagne region as well. Due to the climate, you can expect lighter, dryer, and crisper wines than the sweeter varieties found elsewhere in France.

The best way to explore this wine region is by car – check out this Champagne Road trip itinerary for inspiration. There are also many champagne tours from Reims and Epernay.

Best Champagne Wine Tour: Small-Group Moët & Chandon Champagne Tour

Champagne and opulence often go hand in hand, which is exactly what you’ll get on this full-day tour starting in Paris. From abbeys to châteaux to boutique vineyards, you’ll have a luxury champagne wine tour at a prestigious champagne house such as Moët & Chandon or Mercier, complete with champagne tastings – Book this full-day champagne tour from Paris

Other Wine Tours in the Champagne Wine Region

  • From Reims: half-day champagne tour with Taittinger and family winery
  • From Epernay: half-day champagne tour with tastings and lunch
  • 3 days in Champagne: cellars, tastings, winemakers, and heritage
  • From Epernay: e-bike day trip with family-run winery and lunch

If you prefer to visit one of the best French wine regions to visit near Paris on a self-guided tour, here’s the list of the best champagne houses in Reims , and here are the best champagne houses in Epernay .

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of the year for a wine tour in france.

Any time is a great time for a wine tour in France , especially because we drink and recommend wine-tastings that include older vintages. However, during the summer when it's very hot, it may not be as pleasant as when the weather is cooler. It's also important to keep in mind that wineries are extremely busy during the harvest season - from late August through September - and some may close to the public during this time. Apart from that, each region has its own specific peak seasons, so it's best to research the specific region you plan to visit before deciding on your trip dates. Alternatively, contact us and we will recommend the best time to visit the French wine regions you'd like to visit.

How do I plan a wine trip to France?

At France Just For You, expert trip planners Emilie, Laura and Clelia can plan the perfect custom wine tour of France , tailored to your interests and preferences. From organizing wine tastings and private tours with expert wine guides, to arranging your premium B&B accommodation and car hire, we've got you covered. Just let us know the type of wine, grape variety and French regions (e.g. Burgundy, Bordeaux, Loire etc) you like, and we’ll do the rest!

What is the wine capital of France?

This would be a tough battle between  Bordeaux  (which is often referred to as 'the wine capital of France'), Beaune in Burgundy (world-renowned for its very fine wines) and Reims-Epernay in Champagne . These are the most famous traditional wine cities in France. However, this has changed a lot in recent years, and lots of smaller wine regions produce now excellent wines as well. This means a wine connoisseur could be kept busy for months in France on a comprehensive wine-tasting tour.

Other fine wine-producing regions include the Loire Valley (most famous for its wine wines),  Provence (famous for its rosé wines) and Alsace (known for the Alsace wine road). The Basque Country also has its own traditional wine called Irouléguy. If you book a tour with us, let us know your preferences when it comes to wine and the regions in France you would like to visit, and we will plan the perfect France wine tour just for you!

What is the most scenic wine region in France?

In our opinion, the Loire Valley and Alsace are the most scenic wine regions, though each wine region in France has its own unique charm and beauty. The Loire Valley is known for its stunning castles and rolling vineyards, and the Vosges mountains and the Alsace wine road in eastern France are beautifully scenic. In addition, Burgundy offers gorgeous picturesque landscapes and charming villages, and Provence has lovely sceneries that inspired the work of artists like Paul Cezanne and Vincent van Gogh.

We also particularly like smaller vineyards in very scenic places such as Irouléguy in the Basque Country , Caunes Minnervois near Carcassonne , and Bandol or Cassis on the French Riviera , which are gorgeous places.

All our self drive France itineraries will include recommended driving routes that will take you through gorgeous scenery.

My wife and I are fairly seasoned travelers so when we decided to include a trip to France in our year long 50th Anniversary Celebration we wanted to do something different. We looked at group travel companies including those who specialize in "small" groups. None of them had the flavor we were looking for. In my search for somethin new I happened upon the website of France Just For You and was intrigued by the idea of having a custom-designed French experience. One or two emails later we discovered just how great our experience was going to be. Emilie Thyebaut takes your wishes and likes and turns them into realities. Her extensive planning made our two week trip a memory of a life time. Nothing was omitted--dining recommendations, excellent B&B reservations, rental car reservation, pre-booked guides for such locations as Mont-Saint-Michel--nothing was left to chance. Loke at the France Just For You website and you should be able to make your vacation dreams come true.

The team created an amazing trip. We gave them the nick name “travel fairies” All was just magical.

Emilie & Guillaume did an amazing job organizing and helping us on our trip to France this month. I cannot speak highly enough! Everything was planned to perfection and things went smoothly. We did a few days in Paris, Normandy and Provence, and in each one what they planned was spectacular. We especially enjoyed the wine tasting and picnic in Provence, and the all day personal guide to D-Day in Normandy. We would never have been able to make those arrangements on our own, and having them made the trip a truly unique experience. We went to some of the restaurants Emilie recommended, and loved them. The book with information about EVERYTHING was the best - could not have lived without the GPS coordinates, or we would still be driving around Rouen! Thanks to them for all of their planning and help!

french wine regions tour

When you imagine the perfect French vacation , the scene is probably filled with fairy-tale castles , charming streets lined with picturesque boulangeries and brasseries, and lots of delicious food and wine. Whether you plan to spend your days sunning in Saint-Tropez, skiing in Chamonix, or touring the City of Lights , any trip to France should include the country's famed culinary delights and plenty of local wine. And visitors with a penchant for viticulture will know that there are countless esteemed French vineyards located throughout the country, so even if you're not planning a dedicated tour of France's best wineries, you can still fit a vineyard or two into your vacation itinerary.

Some areas are easily accessible from major cities — in fact, the Champagne region is an easy day trip from Paris — so you have the option of taking a DIY tour by train or car or joining a guided group trip for a more streamlined experience. Either way, you're bound to taste some fantastic wines and walk away with a few souvenir bottles. To help you start planning your dream trip to France, here are 10 popular French wine regions (and a few famous vineyards and wineries).

Near the border of Germany and Switzerland, this region is home to the Alsace Wine Route , a 170-kilometer stretch that takes travelers past fairy-tale villages, castles, churches, and, of course, many vineyards. Nearby Strasbourg, which has distinct German and French influences, is the perfect home base if you want to explore this area.

You might not know how to distinguish a Languedoc wine from one from Alsace, but everyone knows Champagne. Visit the world's most famous Champagne houses in Reims and Épernay (think Veuve Clicquot, Moët & Chandon, and Mumm, just to name a few), or explore the vineyards along the Champagne Tourist Route .

Alsace isn't the only wine region with a specified route — several areas offer curated journeys featuring picturesque vineyards and more, including Beaujolais's 140-kilometer circuit. The area is perhaps best known for Beaujolais nouveau, released every November, but you can travel the route at any time to see the scenic vineyards and taste the region's wines.

One of the world's most famous wine regions, Bordeaux is home to a number of esteemed vineyards and truly beautiful chateaux — you can even spend the night in a castle-like residence on a historic wine estate . Wine lovers will also want to visit the Cité du Vin , so they can learn all about wine history, culture, and creation, and sip a glass from the top floor featuring 360-degree views.

Bourgogne (Burgundy)

" Les climats du vignoble de Bourgogne " — the Burgundy vineyard areas known for their unique terroir — are identified as UNESCO World Heritage sites and have some incredible wines. Explore the vineyards by foot, bike (on the Véloroute), car, or even hot-air balloon, and plan your trip to overlap with one of the 100-plus festivals and events held during typical years.

Loire Valley

Stunning chateaux, beautiful landscapes, France's longest wine route, and over 1,000 vineyards open to the public — these are some of the highlights of the Loire Valley . Avid bikers will want to go for a ride along the hundreds of miles of paths lining the Loire River, and you'll definitely want to visit one (or a few) of the palatial homes that date back hundreds of years, like the Château de Chambord.

Cognac is home to the largest white grape vineyard in all of Europe, but you probably recognize the region for its famous brandy. When you're not exploring the area's vineyards and historic sites, tour the esteemed Cognac maisons — Rémy Martin, Martell & Co., and Hennessy are a few of the famous Cognac producers you'll find in this region.

With charming villages, delicious food, lavender fields, and plenty of rosé, Provence is a must-visit French region whether you love wine or not. Of course, with over 400 vineyards and wine cellars, there's plenty for wine connoisseurs to discover here.

Located along the Mediterranean, this region has some of the oldest and largest vineyards in France. Now part of the larger Occitanie administrative region, Languedoc is home to a number of wineries, as is its neighbor Roussillon , which is famous for vins doux naturels (sweet fortified wines).

Rhône Valley

You can explore the second-largest wine growing region in the country when you visit the Rhône Valley . The area offers 14 wine routes, so you can taste your way through lots of delicious vinos, and there are a few notable spots that make a great home base for your wine-inspired travels, including Lyon, Avignon, and Nîmes.

French Wine Region Tour Description

Day 1: paris to reims.

Champagne Field Wine

This morning we head to Reims, home of the famous champagne region of France. Also, don’t forget it is pronounced Rinse, this city is probably the most mispronounced city in France.

Your driver guide will be waiting in the hotel reception to take you on the short 100-mile journey to Reims, the City of Kings.

Reims is not just famous for champagne, but it is also known as the City of Kings as it was in the cathedral in Reims that Kings of France were crowned from 816 until 1825 – an impressive 33 Kings. In more recent years Reims was the city where the Commander in Chief of the German Army signed the surrender to WWII.

The city was 80% destroyed in World War I and actually was the most damaged city across the whole of France during this period.

A visit to Reims would not be complete without a champagne tasting. Enjoy a private cellar tour in one of the city’s most famous champagne houses with their head vintner who will explain why this small area in France is the only place in the world where champagne can be produced.

Day 2: Epernay

Epernay tour with driver guide

The first champagne house ever created, Ruinart, was in Epernay and today your tour will take to for a visit to one of the prestigious champagnes houses in the champagne region where you will be given a private to of the vineyard by the head vintner along with lunch in the gardens of the wine estate.

In the afternoon take a hot air balloon flight from the city center to have a bird’s eye view of the champagne vineyards as well as the stunning Church of Our Lady (Eglise de Notre-Dame).

Day 3: Champagne to Lorraine

collecting grapes in the Lorraine vineyards on our 14 day wine region tour.

Lorraine was once one of the biggest wine-producing regions of France until the start of the 20th Century when the dreaded phylloxera struck, the First World War, and industrialization all of which diminished the size of this one great wine-producing area.

However, over the last 50 years, local Lorraine winemakers have made huge progress probably spurred on by Hope-de-Toul getting AOC status in 1998.

We start our tour of the Lorraine vineyards with a trip to one of the new wineries that specialize in the production of Côtes de Toul. The Gris de Toul is recognizable by its shimmering salmon pink color. It goes well with the local dish (quiche lorraine, potée lorraine, tourte lorraine, pâté lorrain).

Your tour will include a walk around the stunning wine estate plus lunch and a special pairing menu.

Day 4: Champagne to Alsace

guests enjoying a walking tour over canal of petite venice in Strasbourg

The Alsace wine route is over 170 KM and starts in Northern Alsace in Strasbourg, runs through over 100 pretty villages, and ends in Colmar in Southern Alsace. It is considered to be the most beautiful wine route in France and it is easy to understand why as you travel through the picturesque countryside brimming with Medieval villages and chateaux.

Alsatian wines are almost all white (around 90 percent of the harvest) and some 150 million bottles are produced a year and the highest production of organic wines is made in France.

Wines from Alsace are rarely featured in prestigious wine guides, but many experts believe that the Alsace wines are as good as their better-known rivals such as Chablis and Burgundy.

Unlike the rest of French wines, those in Alsace are called by the name of the grape, not by the region they’re produced in.

Today you will visit the Strasbourg wine region that lies just outside the city. Grapes grow alongside orchards, which give many Alsace wines their characteristic fruity flavor. We spend the day touring the region’s most prestigious estates with a private tour and lunch plus tastings.

In the afternoon your driver guide will take you on a tour of Petite France – a section of Strasbourg famous for its brightly colored houses and narrow cobbled streets. Sample some of the local delicacies such as Chou croute aux viandes or flammkuchen in one of the bustling littles bistros paired with delicious Gewürztraminer or Pinot Gris.

Spend time watching people in one of the beautiful squares in the city center such as Place Gutenberg sipping on a delicious glass of chilled Cremant d’Alsace, the most popular Cremant produced in France.

Day 5: Alsace Wine Route - Colmar

Fachwerkhaus Historic Center in Colmar

Today we go to the heart of the wine region and the capital of Alsace wine – Colmar. Colmar has been consistently nominated and recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in the whole of France and is often referred to as the Fairy-tale town of France.

Rows of prettily colored houses line the banks of the town’s canals. Meander through the uniquely preserved cobbled streets. Colmar was the last town to be liberated by the French after WWII and so there is even today still a very strong German influence in the town. Visit the Quai des Poissonniers which is nicknamed petit Venice for truly picture-perfect colored half-timbered houses with beautiful flower boxes. The local residents are very proud of their houses and so every house is maintained to pristine standards.

Riesling is the king of the vines in Alsace. Unlike the German variety that produces mostly sweet wine, Riesling grapes go dry in Alsace. They produce full-bodied wines with a fruity aftertaste (mostly peaches and apricots) but the soil makes them acidic too. Also, unlike their German counterparts, Alsace Rieslings need to age.

In the afternoon your guide will take you on a private wine tasting at one of the local award-winning wineries, where you can taste some of Alsace’s famous wines such as Gewurztraminer, Riesling, and Silvaner to name a few.

Day 6: Transfer to Burgundy via Montbeliard

Chateau de Montbeliard in the evening.

Today we travel to Burgundy via Montbeliard, a beautiful French city with imposing architecture and majestic buildings. The city has a very German flavor to it and in fact, it was only in 1793 that the city was finally under French rule.

Before then this city was home to over 8 centuries of the various Dukes of Wurttemberg and the city’s rather palatial chateau was their home. Your driver guide will take you on a private tour of the chateau where you can learn about the Franco-German history of the city and the incredible story of Heinrich Schickhardt, the famous architect also known as the “Swabian Leonardo da Vinci”.

In the early 1600s, Montbeliard’s population mushroomed with the arrival of Huguenot refugees and so Schickhardt was commissioned to create a new town plan and many construction projects with an Italian Renaissance flavor.

In the afternoon we head to the famous Parc puy la Rose to see the incredible Fontaine de Galilée – a granite sphere weighing 1500 Kg that can be moved by even a child as the sphere rests on a layer of water providing a cushion against resistance.

Arrive in Chablis early in the evening where your chauffeur will take you to one of the wine estates for a decadent tasting menu (12 courses) each course being paired with a different wine.

Day 7: Burgundy

Church of Saint-Claire de Préhy in the Chablis vineyard in Burgundy.

This morning your driver will be waiting for you in reception ready to start your 2 days of touring in Burgundy, located in the east-central part of France, and home to some of the world’s best-known wines. This wine region has 5 key growing areas: Chablis, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise, Côte des Nuits and Macconais and has been a wine-producing region since 854 when local monks first arrived in the region.

Famous for lean, unoaked Chardonnay, Chablis is the growing region located furthest north and is geographically set apart from the rest of Burgundy. The dominant soil here is called “Kimmeridgian” limestone, just like in Champagne. Its white, chalky texture is great at retaining and reflecting the warmth of the sun, sorely needed this far north, which also helps the grapes ripen.

Today we visit a Grand Cru winery where you will have a tour of the vines with the vigneron (vintner) before returning to the winery for a private cellar tour followed by tastings and formal lunch.

In the afternoon explore the pretty town of Chablis with beautiful Medieval half-timbered houses and charming wine shops and restaurants – at the end of the afternoon your chauffeur will take you to Beaune where you will be based for the next 2 nights.

Day 8: Burgundy

Wine tour in the Village of Meursault, Burgundy.

Today we start with a drive to Meursault, mainly renowned for its white wines but it also produces reds. The grape variety for whites is Chardonnay, while the reds are produced from Pinot Noir. This tiny appellation is 2 KM square and produces undoubtedly some of the world’s best wine. We start the day with a private tasting and a tour of the chateau where this wine is named after. This is unusual for the region, unlike in Bordeaux, there are much fewer wine châteaux.

Our visit today includes a private tour of the castle and grounds with the head sommelier who will teach us why this tiny region of France is home to such a vast array of special wines. Your tastings will include wines featured at 3* Michelin restaurants and your sommelier can arrange a shipment of bottles so that you can savor the delicious Meursault when you get home.

In the afternoon we head back to Beaune and visit a local winery based in the town. Your tour will include at least 6 tastings of local award-winning Burgundy wines.

Day 9: Cotes du Rhone

Wine Estate near Lyon, Cotes du Rhone, France on 1 week tour itinerary

Your chauffeur will be waiting for you as you head off for the next stage of your wine tour. The Rhone valley is the second largest wine region in France and has wineries nestled along both sides of this famous river. Today we spent exploring Lyon and its gastronomic heritage.

Since 1935 Lyon has been recognized as the gastronomic capital of the world and today it has over 4000 restaurants, of which 20 have one or more Michelin stars. Your tour starts with a private tour of Les Halles des Lyon, a covered market with over 50 artisan farmers and producers. Learn why Lyon is a culinary capital and sample local delicacies paired with wines from the region.

In the afternoon visit, one of the local award-winning wine farms and have a private tour of the estate. Learn from your specialist guide about the wines from the region and what makes this area so perfect for wine growing. Learn about pairing wine and taste exquisite vintage wine paired with local cheeses and charcuterie.

In the evening have dinner at one of the many Michelin-starred restaurants and taste the finest Lyon has to offer.

Day 10: Cotes du Rhone

French Vineyard experience in Rhone, France.

We head south today towards the pretty town of Valence. The climate here is very different from the Northern Cotes du Rhone region and is more Mediterranean, with very hot dry summers and long hours of sunshine, and milder winters. The sun, heat, wind (sometimes gale-force), and low rainfall encourage vines to grow and grapes to ripen well, and provide natural protection from disease.

The differences in climate between the North and South also mean different harvest times (the south being earlier) and the planting of different types of grapes.

The 3 main varieties used in Côtes du Rhône blends are Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is planted mainly in the north and Grenache and Mourvèdre being of Spanish origin fare better in the south.

Today we visit one of the thriving organic wineries in the area. Sustainability is something each and every one of us has to incorporate into our day-to-day lives and it is no different for the winemakers in France. In 2020 over 12% of wines from this region were classified as organic and/ or biodynamic and today we learn how the vines are managed and treated to minimize any damage to our planet and still retain the delicious flavors we expect from our Cotes du Rhone.

Day 11: Cotes du Rhone to Provence

Avigon Chateux, France, Private Tours

Continuing South we go to Avignon which until the 18th Century Avignon was actually considered a papal state and it was only in 1791 that Avignon was recognized as French.

This papal influence is clear to see in the enormous Palace des Papes (Popes’ Palace) that dominates the city and was home to the Popes that fled the corruption in Rome. This palace is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and your private tour will include a visit to the papal apartments in the palace.

The next stop is the famous Pont St Benezet, the inspiration for the song ‘ Sur le Pont d’Avignon ‘ and this bridge is a key landmark in the city.

It was originally constructed in the 12th Century but now much of the bridge has been washed away with only about 25% of the original structure remaining. This is not the only famous bridge in the region, your tour will also include the Pont du Gard, this incredible three leveled aqueduct was built to transport water to nearby Nimes. This is the tallest aqueduct in France and is widely thought to be the best preserved Roman aqueduct in France and was given UNESCO World Heritage status in 1985 and is definitely worth a visit.

Following your private tour of Avignon, we head north to Châteauneuf -du – Pape and spend the afternoon exploring the vineyards around one of the region’s most important wine appellations. In the 14th century, the Popes came to Avignon from Rome to establish the papacy there and Châteauneuf-du-Pape (a new castle for the Pope) was built as the summer palace for Pope Jean XXII.

The church and wine have been intertwined for millennia and indeed, vines were planted here commercially as far back as the 1300s to serve the church and nobility. Today Châteauneuf du Pape is a charming Medieval village with more than its fair share of award-winning wine estates.

Day 12: Provence - Marseilles

Marseille mountain on tour of marseille.

The final leg of our wine tour is to the wineries of Provence. We start our tour in Marseilles: its position as a key strategic port goes back to 600 BC when the Greeks first created the port and are steeped in history – even the French National anthem: le Marseilles is based on Marseilles.

Our tour starts at the Basilica Notre – Dame de la Garde which was built by King Francois I to protect the city and is the highest building in Marseilles standing at an impressive 490 feet above sea level. On top of the Basilica is a statue of the Virgin Mary which is said to protect the city and its inhabitants for those of you less mobile there is a train from the Vieux port that goes directly to this amazing Byzantine monument, and from there admire the view across the city and across the Mediterranean.

From there it is a short walk to the Vieux port – the real heart of Marseilles. This is where locals and tourists mix – sample some delicious Bouillabaisse (a local specialty) with freshly caught seafood at one of the many fish restaurants dotted about the port.

Aside from being home to the rich and famous, Provence is also home to rose wine. Over 10 % of the world’s rose comes from Provence and production of rose here accounts for 88% of all wine produced in the area.

Over 24 million bottles of Provencal rose were exported to the US in 2020 alone and the popularity of this once looked down upon wine is now growing. The massive surge in sales is driven by our changing eating habits – less structured meals and our enjoyment and discovery of cuisines from around the world. For those of you that consider rose wine to be a newcomer to the wine scene, you would be wrong as rose wine was produced by the Greeks over 3000 years ago in Provence.

This afternoon you will be taken on a tour with a leading wine merchant who will teach you about the different color variations of Provencal rose and then prepare a tasting menu for you to pair with chosen wines.

The evening will be spent in one of the many exclusive fine dining restaurants in Marseilles and watch the harbor come to life.

Day 13: Provence - Nice

Nice, France, Tours

Nice was originally named after the Greek Goddess Nike and so was possibly the original Nike Town! Nice was an Italian city until relatively recently (1860) when the Italians gave the City to France as recognition of French support in helping the Italians against the Austrians. The strong Italian influence can be seen throughout the city and many of the locals speak both French and Italian.

It is not just French and Italian influences that can be seen in this city. At noon every day, a cannon is fired across the city. This tradition was in fact started by an Englishman in 1860, Sir Thomas Coventry. Sir Thomas used to get very frustrated that his wife could not serve the midday meal at noon and so he requested to the mayor that a cannon be fired every day at noon and he would cover this cost. When Sir Thomas moved back to the UK the locals, having been so used to managing their time with the aid of the midday cannon that they petitioned for the cannon shot to continue at noon. To this day a cannon is fired every day at noon in Nice!

We start the tour in the old town, which is a myriad of winding narrow streets leading to gilded shaded squares with little bistros and cafes.

Your private tour will also include a visit to the magnificent Opera house and the Town Hall and Rosetti Square, home to Nice Cathedral. The Cathedral is unlike many French Cathedrals rather modest from the outside, but once inside admire the lavish Baroque designs, gilded ornate chapels, sculptures, and paintings, all with a distinctly Italian feel.

Stop for lunch in the famous flower and produce market which is also in the old town.

In the afternoon your driver guide will take you west towards the area that produces Cote du Provence Frejus.

Today your tour will give you a complete behind-the-scenes look at the planning and work that is involved in creating delicious crisp rose wine – pink, sparkling or still there is no better place to enjoy rose than in the stunning setting of Provence.

Your sommelier will give you a masterclass on wines from this specific part of Provence. Your workshop ends with a food/wine pairing with locally selected award-winning cheeses, pates, and charcuterie.

Day 14: Transfer to Paris

Your chauffeur will be waiting for you in your hotel reception ready to transport you on the next part of your wine adventure.

Why not extend your trip and let your chauffeur take you up to the Dordogne, home of Bordeaux wines, or head south and visit Corsica, famed also for producing award-winning roses.

What are the 5 Famous Regions in France that Produce Still Wines?

Bordeaux has some of the leading wine tours in France and lures travelers in every year

When it comes to wine, France really does know best. In fact, France is home to not one, not two, but five famous wine regions! I know, it’s pretty amazing.

So, what are they? Well, you have Bordeaux , Burgundy , Champagne , Provence , and the Loire Valley . Each region is known for a specific flavor or style of wine. For example, Champagne is most popular for well, champagne! As well as light and bubbly sparkling white wines.

Burgundy, on the other hand, is most well known for its pinot noir and chardonnay. The region you should visit highly depends on the type of wine you like or want to try.

Here is a quick breakdown of which types of wine each French wine region is known for:

Bordeaux ⮕ Merlot & Cabernet Sauvignon Burgundy ⮕ Pinot Noir & Chardonnay Champagne ⮕ Light, fruity, sparkling wines Provence ⮕ Rosés Loire Valley ⮕ Sauvignon Blanc

Of course, you can find almost every variety of wine in the world in every one of these regions, but if you’re trying to become a true wine connoisseur, then it will be in your best interest to choose a destination (or destinations ) that speaks to your palette’s preferences.

Below, I’ve broken down the best wine tours in France by region, so you can easily find one that is perfect for your taste preferences. Remember that each tour’s specific inclusions and exclusions may vary, so be sure to click on the link and read all of the fine print before booking.

What is the Best Wine Region in France?

When it comes to wine tours in France, some regions are better known for specific wines than others

Popular opinion has made its claim that Bordeaux is the leading wine region to visit in France . It’s globally recognized as the wine capital of the world and even earned a UNESCO World Heritage Site status back in 2007 .

However, no matter who you ask, every wine connoisseur is going to have a different opinion owing to their individual preferences.

If you enjoy light and bubbly with a slight hint of fruitiness, then Champagne may become your favorite region, but if you favor deep, rich reds, then Burgundy will likely be high on your list!

With over 8,000 different wine producers catering to every taste of every traveler, it’s no surprise that Bordeaux is frequently awarded with the “ best wine region in France ” title.

What is the Most Famous Wine in France?

These top wine tours in France will reveal some of the best wines for your palette

It’s hardly surprising that the best wine region in France and the wine capital of the world is also home to the most famous wine in France .

Generally speaking, Bordeaux’s popular Merlot’s make up more than half of the wine produced in these vineyards and is definitely among the most famous wines in France .

While there is no wine, in particular, that has earned the top badge for the most famous wine in the country across the board, there are a few popular picks that continue to receive high accolades year after year!

Cabernet Sauvignons and Merlots are typically the two highest contenders, with Chardonnay and Champagne not far behind.

Are Wine Tastings Free in France?

As far as wine tours in France go, the ones among the lavender fields in Provence are simply exquisite

While it depends on the winery you visit, most of the time wine tastings are not free in France unless you are staying at their associated hotel and have purchased a package.

Some smaller wineries will give away light wine samples free of charge, but don’t expect this from the more distinguished estates.

However, if you’re looking to take part in wine tastings in France on a budget, you can usually find great deals (like 5-7 samples for as low as 10 euros a person) by just checking out the websites of the wine estates in the regions you’ll be in!

It’s super simple to check online and even book ahead so you know you won’t have to wait when you arrive. This is especially important during the busy season of September through October when it is harvesting season.

How Much is a Wine Tour in France?

wine tours in France typically cost between $50-200 per person

The cost of a wine tour in France is going to vary greatly depending on which region you’re in, how long it is (hours versus days), the number of samples you try, if add-ons like transportation and lunch are included , and if you visit more than one region in France .

In fact, they vary so greatly, I’ve seen tours as low as $11 (not that you should expect these to be very good) and as high as over $2,000 for private, multi-day tours!

But, for the most part, a tour that lasts for a few hours in one region and includes between 3-6 different wines, you can expect to pay between $50-200 per person .

Can You Visit Wineries in France?

Most wine tours in France allow you to visit their lovely wineries and vineyards

Absolutely! Most wine tours in France allow you to visit their wineries without question . You will find that some vineyards on the property may be roped off at the time of your visit to allow for proper growth, but this isn’t always the case.

This is simply to prevent unwanted trekking through fragile ecosystems which could inhibit or affect the growth of the grapes.

Many wineries in France have both vineyards and wine cellars available for tours, but you will likely need to be with a guide for the majority of your visit.

What Time of Year is Best for Wine Tours?

french wine regions tour

The best time to visit France for a wine tour is typically during the harvest season which falls between September and October. During this period, you’ll have the opportunity to see the winemaking process in action and perhaps even participate in grape harvesting events.

However, it’s worth noting that this is also peak season for French wine connoisseurs so it can be crowded. If you prefer a quieter trip, consider visiting in late spring (May and June), when the vineyards are lush and beautiful, and the weather is comfortable.

You likely won’t see many grape-covered vineyards, but it’s an amazing time to sample the wine from the previous season without thousands of other tourists around.

Regardless of the time of year you choose, each season offers a unique and delightful experience in France’s wine regions.

Can I Take a France Wine Tour by Train?

french wine regions tour

Yes, it’s entirely possible to take a wine tour in France by train. The French rail system is extensive and well-connected, allowing easy access to major wine regions like Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Champagne.

Some companies even offer organized wine tour packages that include train travel, making your wine exploration stress-free and enjoyable. However, these usually add up to thousands of euros per person.

You could also create your very own French wine tour by choosing your estates in advance, then traveling to them via train and taxi or by rental car. I personally know people that did this, and in the end they said it was great getting to stop for pictures along the way whenever they wanted, but it was a lot of effort and time on the road.

Overall, they wouldn’t do it again and on their return to France they would certainly be booking a guided tour to take care of all the logistics for them.

How Do I Plan a Wine Tasting Trip to France?

It's easy to book a wine tour in France! Simply discover what kinds of wine you like and then plan your trip around those regions in France!

It may seem daunting, but planning a wine trip to France is really quite simple. The Champagne region is known for, well, champagne! So, if you love a glass of the bubbly stuff, be sure to include at least a few nights in this region where you’ll find endless bubbles of every kind.

If you aren’t really a fan of reds, then perhaps it’s best to spend less time in the Burgundy region.

But, if you want to taste it all, you really can’t go wrong as every wine region in France houses spectacular wines of every kind!

Or, if you would like a little bit of help, I have actually created personal wine trips across France for honeymooners seeking a romantic getaway, and I would be happy to help you too!

Champagne Wine Region

french wine regions tour

The region of Champagne is France’s coldest winemaking region and is located in the east close to Belgium and Luxembourg.

Champagne is also one of the most famous wine regions in France. It is also the closest wine region to Paris, so Champagne day trips and Champagne wine tours from Paris are very popular.

GOOD TO KNOW: In Ile-de-France we also produce champagne! More precisely, 80 Ha of the wine country near Paris, in the Seine-et-Marne department, is dedicated to producing champagne wine. This is because the champagne vineyards are located in the former province of Champagne which corresponds today to the Grand Est region (Aube, Marne), but also the departments of Aisne and Seine-et-Marne.

The wine region of Champagne is most famous for its champagne wine . Whilst many of us may call sparkling wine ‘champagne,’ the fact is a sparkling wine from this region is the only sparkling wine that can be technically called ‘champagne.’

Other than champagne wine, the cooler climate of this French wine region lends itself to be perfect for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Champagne’s whites tend to be lighter, crisper, and less fruity than other wine areas in France.

The region of Alsace has historically had close ties with Germany and German culture, which is evident in the wine from Alsace. Due to its German influence, the wines from Alsace include some of the best Rieslings, Pinot Gris , and Gewürztraminer wines .

Whilst the French wine region of Alsace is predominantly known for its white wines, it also produces some red and rosé wines.

Located in Southeastern France along the Rhône River, the wine region of Côtes du Rhône is best known for its reds and is, in fact, one of France’s major producers and exporters of red wine.

This French wine region is split into two sections: Northern Rhône and Southern Rhône . Northern Rhône Valley vineyards make some of the most expensive wines in the region while in Southern Rhône, you will find more white wines with blends of Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne, and Viognier.

We always ensure a good stock of Rhône Valley wines: red wines from the Rhône and red wine from Bordeaux are our favorite ones!

Trip Summary

This package is perfect for those looking to spend a longer period of time in France, exploring all of the main premium wine regions. This 16 day ultimate French wine tour allows guests to discover the world-renowned wines of Bordeaux, the Loire Valley, Champagne, Alsace, Burgundy and the Rhône, with rail travel included between each of the regions. During this oenological saga, guests will learn all about red, white and sparkling wines, visiting a range of wineries, including large, prestigious estates, as well as small, family-run producers. Travel and wine-lovers, look no further because the solution to your wine-lust problems is here!

Your trip will start in Bordeaux, with a tasting session of five wines in a quaint wine bar, located within walking distance of the two hotels offered. The tasting will be accompanied by a platter of cheeses and meats. On days two and three, you will meet your guide at a central departure point for a full day transported and guided tour through the Bordeaux vineyards. On one of the days you visit the internationally famed left-bank Médoc and the other day, the UNESCO Classified appellation of Saint-Emilion and neighbouring Pomerol.

During your tour of the Médoc, you will visit three Châteaux, learning particularly about the Cabernet Sauvignon grape and gaining an insight into what makes those big, bold reds so revered. During your visit to Saint-Emilion and Pomerol, you will discover the singularities of the softer wines, predominantly made from the Merlot grape. You will visit three Châteaux, as well as a guided walking tour of the picturesque village. During both days, you will learn all about the fascinating wine-making process from press to bottle, and each tour will conclude with a tasting of the Château’s wine. There will be a maximum of sixteen guests on the tour and each Château that you visit will be a Cru Classé estate. On one of the evenings, a three course gourmet dinner will be served in a premium city centre restaurant. Your dinner will be accompanied by three local wines.

After checking out of your hotel in Bordeaux on day four, you will board a train to Tours in the Loire Valley. The journey time is approximately three hours. Upon your arrival in Tours, you will check into your room at the 4* Oceania l’Univers. After settling in at the hotel, a pre-booked and pre-paid taxi will take you to a nearby premium Vouvray estate. Here, your guide will accompany you on a tour of the domaine and cellars, concluding with tastings of five of the region’s white Chenin Blanc-based wines, including the domaine’s Réserve Spéciale. Tastings of local delicacies such as cheeses and rillettes will be served alongside the wines.

Ultimate French Wine Tour

Having been introduced to the region’s white wines, your journey of discovery will continue on day five, where rail travel to Chinon is included as part of the package. The hotel is located just a few minutes’ walk from the station, allowing complete ease of access. Upon arrival in the beautiful riverside town of Chinon, you will be welcomed as the VIP guests of one of the town’s best producers. Your guide will accompany you on a tour of the estate and cellars, where you will see first-hand the wine-making process from press to bottle. The tour will conclude with five tastings. A pre-booked and pre-paid taxi will then take you to a 15 th Century wine-making Château, where following a visit to the Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc vineyards and a tour of the cellars, a tasting session will take place in the Château’s historic tasting room. A picnic lunch with a bottle of wine will then be served in the Château’s stunning grounds. The afternoon will be free to explore the pretty riverside town of Chinon before taking the train back to Tours at your convenience. In the evening, a three course dinner will be served in a premium brasserie in Tours with drinks.

On the morning of day six, you will check out of the hotel and cross the square to the train station, where you will board the train to Reims, in Champagne. The journey time is roughly two and a half hours. After having checked in at your preferred hotel (both within walking distance of the station), you will then be welcomed as guests at your preferred large, prestigious Champagne House in the city. Subject to your dates of travel / availability, options include Taittinger, where two Champagnes will be served; GH Mumm, to taste their Blanc de Blancs and Blancs de Noirs Champagnes; Pommery, to sample their Prestige Cuvée Louise; Ruinart, to taste Ruinart Blanc de Blancs or Ruinart rosé followed by their flagship Prestige Cuvée Dom Ruinart white or rosé; and Veuve Clicquot, to enjoy a flute of their celebrated La Grande Dame. Walking distances to the Champagne Houses can be up to 25 minutes, therefore you may prefer to ask your hotel to arrange a taxi for you on the day. Please note that some of these Houses (particularly Veuve Clicquot and Ruinart) are very popular and offer very few tours, therefore early booking is essential.

The next day, you will be met at your hotel by an English-speaking specialist driver/guide, who will accompany you on a full day transported Champagne tour, visiting two small, family-run Champagne Houses. During the course of the day, your guide will regale you with tales and anecdotes of the history of Champagne and its vineyards, introducing you to the particularities of the region. You will also stop in a vineyard to learn about the work undertaken here and the tour is designed to be as hands-on as possible. A three course lunch with a glass of wine, water and coffee will be served in a local restaurant. Ending the day in style, you will then visit Champagne Mercier or Champagne De Castellane in Epernay, for a tour of their cellars followed by a flute of their Champagne.

From sparkling to white! After having checked out of your hotel, you will board the train to your next wine destination, Alsace. The journey between Reims and Strasbourg is approximately two hours. Upon your arrival in Strasbourg, the afternoon will be free for you to explore this charming city. Included in the package is a Strasbourg pass, which offers discounts for numerous attractions, as well as free entry to one museum, free entry to the Cathedral’s viewing gallery, entry to see the famous clock, a half day bike hire and a complimentary river cruise. In the evening, a tutored tasting session of three Alsace wines will take place in a chic wine bar, accompanied by a platter of local cheeses and meats.

On day nine, guests will enjoy a full day transported and guided wine tour in the Alsace vineyards. Firstly you will be taken to Mittelbergheim, a traditional wine producing region and officially recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in France. Here, you will experience a wide variety of tastings including Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner and Reisling. Afterwards, you will be driven further into the vineyards towards the quaint winery village of Dambach-la-Ville, located at the heart of the Alsace wine region. Here, you will enjoy a second tasting session in a typical ‘caveau’ (the name given to local wineries). After free time for lunch, it is on to Riquewihr and Ribeauville, to enjoy two afternoon tasting sessions in some of the most highly-regarded wineries. In the evening, you will be invited to dine in a traditional winstub . Meaning “wine lounge,” winstubs epitomise the Alsatian way of life. Originally open to the public for wine-growers to sell surplus wines, winstubs are convivial, country-style restaurants, with red-checked table cloths and wooden tables, where diners enjoy carafes of wine accompanied by small, simple dishes. Here, you will have the opportunity to sample regional specialities, such as Sauerkraut, Baeckaoffa and tartes flambées.

On day ten, you will board the train from Strasbourg to Beaune in Burgundy, home to some of France’s most expensive wines. The journey time is roughly two and half hours. After having settled in, as always, you will be introduced the wines of the region with a cellar tour and tasting session with a traditional Burgundian wine-maker. Your knowledgeable host will talk you through tastings of six varied Burgundy wines.

You will continue to build on your newfound knowledge on day eleven, where you will meet your English-speaking driver/guide at a central departure point for a full day transported and guided tour of the vineyards. You will be transported in an off-road vehicle, allowing access to locations that are usually off-limits. You will visit both the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits, experiencing the range of wines this prestigious region has to offer. You will be introduced to the sources of some of the greatest Chardonnay wines (vineyards such as Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet), as well as red wines made from the Pinot Noir grape (from areas such as Pommard, Volnay and Santenay). Your day will include visits to two estates and a vineyard tasting. At the end of the day, you will be chauffeured back to the centre of Beaune, in time to freshen up before enjoying the beautiful Burgundian evening. A four course gourmet dinner will be served in a premium city centre restaurant, accompanied by two half bottles of local wine, water and coffee.

On day twelve, you will commence the next leg of the journey, travelling through the Rhône Valley. The journey from Beaune to your first stop in Tain l’Hérmitage is approximately three and a quarter hours (via Lyon). You will be staying across the river in Tournon-sur-Rhône for two nights at the beautiful Hotel la Villéon. The next morning, you will be welcomed at the Paul Jaboulet Aîné boutique. One of the biggest names in the Northern Rhône and producer of the world-revered “La Chapelle,” this estate has been making highly sought-after wines for almost two Centuries and you will firstly taste a Hérmitage white wine and two Hérmitage reds, one of which will be the latest vintage of “La Chapelle.”

Ultimate French Wine Tour - Credits Fabien Marinello

A three course lunch with a further two Jaboulet wines will then be served. You will have time to admire the breathtaking views across the Valley from the iconic “La Chapelle,” a stone chapel which was allegedly built by a 13 th Century knight who fell in love with the vineyards here. In the afternoon, you will be taken by taxi to a quality producer of St Péray or Cornas wines for a full tour and extensive tasting session. Please note that we are unable to pre-pay taxis in Tain l’Hermitage / Tournon sur Rhone. We will pre-book your transfers for you and we expect the taxi transfers to cost in the region of 50 euros.

After checking out on day fourteen, we will arrange rail travel to Avignon, where accommodation for your last two nights will be provided at the 4* Cloître Saint Louis in the heart of the city. Upon your arrival in Avignon, the afternoon will be free for you to explore the city. Entry into the Papal Palace and the much loved Pont d’Avignon have been included in the package. A four course dinner with drinks will be served in a restaurant in the city centre in the evening. On the final day of tours, you will be taken on a full day transported tour with an English-speaking specialist wine guide. During the course of the day, tours and tastings will take place in the revered villages of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas and Vacqueyras and lunch in a local bistrot will also be included.

Provence Wine Region France

Before I explain the leading tours, I want to explain some background information on the famed Provence wine region. That way, you have a little foundation and better understand what you have to look forward to! 🤠

First, France's Provence wine region has been making wine for over 2,600 years. This makes it the oldest viticultural (wine-producing) area in all of France, eclipsing the well-known Bordeaux wine region by about 600 years!

With such a long-standing history, there are understandably quite a few wineries in the region... as in over 400 of them! Talk about being a vineyard-rich countryside 😅

This region of France is able to produce so much wine because of its favorable climate, which is largely thanks to the Mediterranean Sea. The Mediterranean Sea regulates the weather such that there are plenty of sunny days and a few rainy days.

In addition, the region has something called the "Mistral" wind, which also helps to keep the vineyards dry and free of pesky bugs.

Add the unique geography and soils infused with limestone and crystalline schist (granite); the region has perfect conditions for growing an assortment of grapes!

As a result, there are a total of 9 regions or AOC (Appellation de’Origin Contrôlée) in Provence. I won't dive into all 9 as you'll learn about them on the tours, but there are about 450 AOCs in all of France!

Which Wine Is Provence Most Famous For?

The Provence wine region is renowned worldwide for its exquisite rosé wines.

That's right, 88% of Provence's wine production is the beloved, delicate pink-hued wine! There's even a one-of-a-kind research institute dedicated to studying and perfecting the art of crafting rosé!

Currently, a rosé from Provence is usually a harmonious blend of Grenache, Counoise, Cinsault, Syrah, and Mourvedre!

And while rosé may steal the spotlight, it's important to note that Provence is also home to exceptional red and white wines. Thus, you can expect to taste a good mixture of rosés, reds, and whites in your wine-tasting experience!

Is a Wine Tour in Provence Worth It?

My very biased two cents is that these yes, it's worth it. Let me explain from a broke adult perspective lol... because I wouldn't know what it's like to be a financially stable adult -- yet 🤠

First, these tours take you directly to la crème de la crème Provence wineries where you get to sip on the region's renowned wines and indulge in local gastronomic delights. And as mentioned previously, there are literally hundreds of wineries in the region, so choosing which ones to visit can be difficult.

Not to mention, if you aren't planning a road trip through the region, transportation to the wineries is another factor you'll have to work out.

Provence's famed lavender fields

Moreover, a wine tour allows you to embark on this journey with a knowledgeable guide who possesses an intimate understanding of the region, its vineyards, and its cultural heritage. When I first solo traveled, I wouldn't do tours because I was so broke (typical college student vibes I know 🥲).

However, I now prioritize these incredible experiences over staying in super nice hotels (okay most of the time). I've realized how tours grant you the valuable opportunity to delve deep into the local culture, which is so much better than reading from your phone.

Finally, these tours provide a chance to connect with fellow wine enthusiasts from around the world. One of my favorite bits about traveling is just getting to meet new people.

These tours create an easy outlet for swapping stories and making lasting connections with people who share a common appreciation for wine, culture, and exploration!

So, if you have the means (because I am not trying to endorse going into debt lol) I absolutely believe in embarking on a cultural experience through the breathtaking region of Provence!

Tips for Planning Your Provence Wine Tours

✅ Book ahead of time: Whether you're traveling through Paris or Toulouse, drinking wine is like the national pastime in France...okay, maybe next to protesting 😅 Regardless, I recommend booking ahead of time to ensure you get your preferred time slot and experience.

Some of these small group tours will actually cancel if you wait until the last minute because the tour operators don't think there's any interest and have a minimum requirement to run.

🍴  Have dietary restrictions? : If your food tour includes lunch, make sure to inform the guide beforehand about any dietary restrictions or allergies you have. They are usually able to make accommodations as long as you give them advance notice

🍷 Don't drink on an empty stomach: The golden rule of drinking is always to eat beforehand! I didn't know that my first time and had to learn the hard way... 🥲

Taken from the top of Colline du Chateau Nice

💧  Water Bottle  — Similarly, although you will be consuming a lot of wine, it is crucial to still drink some water.

🌞  Check the weather:  Check the weather before you leave and plan accordingly. I.E. Don't forget to sunscreen!

🚗  Check departure points and times:  Please ensure that you verify the meeting location for your tour and consider the travel time from your accommodation. Note that only a few tours offer hotel pick-up.

📸  Bring your Camera:  Make sure to document your experience by taking lots of pictures so that you can share the story with your loved ones when you return home!

🤠  Enjoy the experience:  And of course, remember to have a fabulous time fully immersing yourself in the rich culture of the Provence wine region.

Where to Stay in Nice

If you are staying in Nice, here are a few recommendations on where to stay based on where I've stayed and the research I've done for my multiple visits to Nice!

  • Hostel Ozz & Bar -- lovely hostel that I loved staying at! | ⭐️  8.6 / 10
  • Villa Bougainville by Happyculture  — awesome 4-star hotel | ⭐️  7.8 / 10

Mid-Range Stays

  • La Pérouse  — 4-star hotel next to Castle Hill & with pool | ⭐️  8.8 / 10
  • Hotel Nice Côte D’Azur  — 4-star hotel w/ beautiful terraces | ⭐️  9 / 10

Luxury Stays

  • Hotel Palais Saleya  — great 4-star hotel near Castle Hill | ⭐️  9.4 / 10
  • Le Negresco  — historic 5-star hotel along Promenade des Anglais | ⭐️  9.1 / 10

Provence Wine Tours: FAQ

Can You Visit Wineries in Provence?

Yes! You can absolutely visit wineries in Provence even if you decide to not go on a tour. You would just need to make a reservation for touring. I would also recommend renting a car as public transportation is very limited outside the city.

How Much Do Provence Wine Tours Cost?

Depending on the experience, a Provence wine tour can range from about $100 USD to $500+ USD for the more exclusive, private tours.

What Is the Ideal Time of the Year for a Wine Tour in France?

Although summer is when people are usually available to travel, I'd argue the ideal time of the year for a wine tour in France is April - June or September to October .

I've been to France during both of these times of the year and it's so much more enjoyable. You don't have to deal with throngs of crowds, hotels cost half the price, and some of the tours actually provide small discounts!

One thing to note is that harvesting season typically runs from August until October. Thus, vintners are often busy in the fields, so you'll want to be sure to book in advance as supply tends to dip.

Which Region of France Has the Most Prestigious Wine?

Most people will argue that Bordeaux is the region of France that offers the finest wine. However, I'd argue that it really depends on the type of wine you prefer. Other wine regions in France include the Rhône Valley & Beaujolais wine region , Loire Valley, Burgundy, Champagne, and Saint Émilion to name a few.

Do the French Drink Wine Every Night?

Yes LOL. From my experience, this is the one French stereotype that always holds true. The French love their wine and they will drink it every chance they get!

Wrap-Up: 13 Excellent Provence Wine Tours (2023)

In conclusion, Provence's most famous wine is undoubtedly its exquisite rosé. With its iconic pale hues, delightful aromas, and refreshing character, Provence rosé embodies the essence of the region's winemaking tradition.

That said, the region also offers elegant reds to its vibrant whites that reflect the unique terroir and passion of the winemakers, making Provence a true paradise for wine lovers.

So, if you're keen on delving into the rich wine culture of France, be sure to take a fabulous Provence wine tour during your stay on the French Riviera !
