Red Dead Redemption 2 How to Unlock Fast Travel

October 25, 2018 by PowerPyx 1 Comment

This guide will teach you how to unlock fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). There are 3 types of fast travel:

  • Permanently Free Fast Travel: Can be unlocked by upgrading your camp.
  • Train Tickets / Post Office: Train Tickets can be bought at the Post Office for a small fee, but not every other train stations can be reached from each town.
  • Stagecoaches: Found in most towns, you can call a Stagecoach to drive you to another town. The downside is that these only work when you have no bounty on your head worldwide.

In addition to fast travel, there is automatic horse travel (autopilot) which lets you set a waypoint anywhere and you can hold Touchpad (PS4) / View-Button (Xbox One) to make your horse ride there automatically. To initiate this you must be riding on a road in the direction of the waypoint.

Unlocking Free Fast Travel (Camp)

Step 1 (Unlock Camp Upgrades) : In Chapter 2, complete Strauss’s story mission “Money Lending and other Sins”. Strauss wants you to track down debtors who took a loan from your gang. There are 3 of them, you just need to get money from one and put it in the camp’s tithing box. This unlocks the ledger next to the tithing box. There you can select camp upgrades!

Step 2 (Unlock Fast Travel): Buy the first two camp upgrades in the lodging category “First Things First” ($220) & “Next in Line” ($325). That’s $545 in total. The second upgrade unlocks a fast travel map behind Arthur’s tent!

Now you can use the map behind Arthur’s tent for free fast travel. You can only travel to discovered towns, but cannot travel back. This is one way only. To get back you’ll have to either ride your horse or use one of the fast travel options below to get to the nearest town and then ride back to camp. Below is an image of what the fast travel map looks like:

Train Fast Travel

Train Tickets can be bought at any Post Office. The further you want to travel the more they cost (it usually varies between $5-$15). The downside is that not every train station is connected to each other. So you may have to take multiple trains to get where you want to go.

The upside is that it works even when you have a bounty on your head. The train fast travel is instant.

Camp guide - how to upgrade, fast travel, and all upgrades.

Camp.jpg

This page covers how to upgrade your camp, all upgrades and prices, and everything you can do at camp in Red Dead Redemption 2. For example, upgrading certain parts of camp will eventually unlock fast travel . Upgrading your camp requires the Ledger . You can do even more upgrading with the Leather Working Tools purchased in the Ledger .

How to Upgrade Your Camp

One of the most important aspects of the camp is upgrading its looks to get bonus content. Here's how to unlock the Ledger and Camp Upgrades .

  • Beat the first 5 missions in Chapter 2 to unlock Money Lending and Other Sins .
  • Complete the mission Money Lending and Other Sins a Leopold Strauss mission, who can be found in the camp.
  • After completing this mission, you can find the Ledger next to the tithing box to put the camp's money to good use.
  • Consider buying the Leather Working Tools in the Ledger first (see below).

You can see what upgrades can be purchased for the various tents and wagons in the sections below.

Camp Morale

Camp morale plays a big part in your life here, even if you don't always see it at work. By donating money to the tithing box, partaking in chores, purchasing upgrades, and completing requests - other camp members will be happier, and donate free items like provisions , ammo, and medicine, and even donate more money to the tithing box themselves.

Arthur's Wagon

Arthur's tent will be set up next to an adjoining wagon (it's where the main camp icon is on the map). Here you can rest, sleep, and check some of Arthur's personal effects including several photos.

This is also the main place to change your outfits .You'll start the game with only a few basic outfits (unless you've gotten the Ultimate Edition that includes bonus costumes). Note that Coats, Vests , and Boots have associated values for how they perform in hot or cold weather. Since you can also store up to three outfits on your horse (including custom outfits ), you should always have at least one warm weather outfit and one cold weather outfit stored that you can swap into when traveling.

Arthur can also do some basic shaving while at his tent. While it won't be as good looking or as thorough as a barber's cut in Saloons, Arthur can at least trim his beard, mustache, and chin - or all facial hair at once.

Behind Arthur's tent is where the ammo supplies are found. When the camp is prospering, you can find additional ammo to borrow when embarking on journeys. Just be sure not to hog too much, or it might hurt the camp's supplies.

Once you unlock Fast Travel you can also access it at Arthur's tent.

At the start, you'll only be able to find Revolver and Pistol ammo from time to time, but once you gain the ability to upgrade the camp, you can restock supplies as needed or improve things by ordering better ammo.

Dutch's Tent

Dutch has set up his tent in the middle of the camp, and this is where the camp's tithing box is set up near the back. As you perform jobs and gain more money, you should be sure to invest a portion of your earnings to the camp's pot.

When the money stored in the camp reaches higher levels, you'll be able to upgrade individual tents, and even gain the ability to fast travel back to the camp at any time (which is a big deal in a big world with limited fast traveling!).

You won't be doing it alone either - the more you contribute, and the more you upgrade lodgings, the more the rest of your team will want to help contribute and bring even more money in.

Pearson 's Chuckwagon

Pearson is the gang's cook, and handles food supplies as well as utilizing animal parts to upgrade various items - both around the camp and Arthur's satchel inventory.

You can give Pearson food items , pelts, valuables , and carcasses stores on your horse to increase camp funding, and you can also inquire about upgrades - but you will need to acquire Leather Working Tools for certain upgrades - which can be bought from the Ledger . If you wish to have Pearson craft satchel upgrades, you will first need to unlock the recipe by performing various tasks for the camps , like upgrading wagons or donating specific goods.

Please note that in order to make use of his upgrades, you must first donate the recipe materials to Pearson himself, and they will then be added to his stock when selecting upgrades.

Strauss's Wagon

Strauss the German is the camp's doctor and bookkeeper, and his wagon is where you can find medical supplies donated by other members of the camp. While you'll only find Cures and Bitters at first, upgrades will allow you to stock more provisions with better effects.

Other Upgrades

The following camp upgrades can be purchased at the back of the ledger , and improve the quality of life around the camp, as well as unlocking new items or upgrades.

Red Dead Redemption 2: Fast travel guide - How to unlock fast travel

How to get fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Red Dead Redemption 2’s map is a vast, complex beast and sometimes you won’t want to lug your horse halfway across the continent to start a mission. This is where having a method of fast travel comes in handy. While there’s no way of teleporting to discovered locations at any time from the map, there are several methods of transport that’ll certainly prove speedier than a horse.

Below we’ve put together a list of all the fast travel methods in Red Dead Redemption 2 and how to unlock them.

How to unlock fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Here’s how you can unlock fast travel:

  • You won’t be able to unlock fast travel until you start Chapter 2 in the main story.
  • The first step is to complete the mission “Money Lending and Other Sins”. Hand in your first debt, and you’ll be taught how the ledger can be used to upgrade your camp.
  • When you’ve got a free moment and enough camp cash, open up the ledger and flick to the Lodgings section. Upgrade it once, and you’ll have to the option to upgrade Arthur’s tent. Do this and you’ll unlock fast travel.

To use fast travel, go round the back of Arthur’s tent and view the map that’s there. Select a location that you’ve visited before and you’ll magically appear there along with your main horse.

Other methods of fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

There are two other ways of getting around the map quicker than normal: Stagecoach and train.

Unlocking fast travel from your camp is not a prerequisite! You can use these modes of transport from the beginning of Chapter 2.

How to use a stagecoach

  • There’s a signpost icon near all the major towns and cities in the game, and this is where you’ll find a stagecoach.
  • As long as you’ve been to a certain location previously, you can pay a fare to use the stagecoach to visit that specific destination.
  • If the signpost symbol is locked and greyed out, this means you’re unable to use the stagecoach until after you’ve dismounted from your horse or exited a mission state.

How to use a train

  • At most larger towns and cities there is an envelope icon. Head on over to these locations and you’ll be able to catch a train.
  • Using the train, you can travel to any destination on the list from the very beginning of Chapter 2. It’s also cheaper than the stagecoach too.

How to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Tired of gallivanting on your horse all the time? Here's how to unlock and use fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2.

While it's fun to gallop through the countryside or run around a town, sometimes you just want to get somewhere fast. Getting to the various towns and regions in Red Dead Redemption 2 often means travelling across the massive map on horseback. However, there are ways to cut down on all that horsemanship and equine bonding.

There are two ways you can fast travel in RDR2 , but you can't just open up the map, choose a location and whisk yourself away at the drop of a hat. You'll either need to track down some public transport or work on those camp upgrades for the Van Der Linde gang, but to give you a helping hand, here's how to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 .

How to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

There are two methods of fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2; you can use public transport such as stagecoaches and trains, or you can unlock the ability to fast travel from camp.

The former - travelling via public transport - is simple. All you need to do is make your way to the nearest ticket station, purchase a ticket to your chosen destination from the kiosk, and then off you go. This'll set you back a few dollars each time, but it definitely makes getting around the map a lot quicker.

Arthur looks at train station tickets at the Rhodes post office in Red Dead Redemption 2

You can also choose to fast travel from your camp , but you will need to upgrade your camp first. There are a few upgrades you can make, which you can read more about in our Red Dead Redemption 2 camp upgrade guide.

To specifically unlock fast travel, however, you'll need to do is head to the camp's money box and open up the ledger next to it. From there, upgrade Dutch's lodgings , which has the added benefit of inspiring other gang members to contribute more.

Arthur looks at the fast travel map at the Shady Belle camp in Red Dead Redemption 2

This will also unlock a map upgrade - this is how you fast travel. Buy that after upgrading Dutch's lodgings, and the map will appear in Arthur's area of the camp - its precise location is different depending on where your camp is located but it is usually close to Arthur's tent. Interact with the map and you'll then be able to choose from a list of destinations to travel to on your trusty steed.

It's $220 for Dutch's quarters and $325 for the map upgrade. The easiest way to get this sort of cash is to buy the upgrades after the gang's first big heist, or after finding a few gold bars.

Arthur looks at fast travel destinations while camping out in the wilderness in Red Dead Redemption 2

What's better is that once you unlock the map upgrade at camp, you can then easily fast travel anywhere for free. You can access the map from Arthur's camp to venture out into the wilderness, but you can also access the fast travel map whenever Arthur sets up a temporary camp. Just rest, set up Arthur's camp, and select fast travel to pick a destination.

If you're trying to set up camp and keep receiving the 'Cannot create camp while there is activity nearby' error, even though you're out in the sticks and not a soul is near, don't worry. Instead, open Arthur's inventory and go to 'Items'. There'll be an option to setup camp here, and it should work without a hitch unless there really is some activity nearby.

So, if you're out hunting legendary animals and find yourself needing to pay a visit to Valentine or Saint Denis, set up a quick camp!

Red Dead Redemption 2 fast travel: How to unlock fast travel and other ways of travelling quickly

How to get around the world quickly with Fast Travel in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Red Dead Redemption 2 fast travel is something you'll probably be asking about after your third or fourth long trek between destinations.

Though the game doesn't make a big song and dance about it, the good news is fast travel is in the game - though there is several caveats to how it works.

If you haven't unlocked fast travel yet, then there's other ways of getting round the map as well - allowing you to reach far-off destinations as soon as the game world opens up.

For more help, our Red Dead Redemption 2 walkthrough explains the requirements for fully completing the game's many story missions.

How to unlock fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Fast travel won't be available to you when you start Chapter 2, and has to be unlocked by progressing through the story, and then unlocking a few camp upgrades.

First, play through to mission Money Lending and Other Sins . Hand in your first debt, and you'll learn about the Ledger, allowing you to upgrade your camp .

You want to specifically upgrade Lodgings. Once you have upgraded it once, you'll have the option to upgrade Arthur's tent. Do so, and you'll unlock fast travel.

fast travel rdr2 from camp

Of course, it isn't a simple case of selecting somewhere on the map and going there. You have to go to Arthur's tent - specifically, round the back - and view the map. Then, you select a location you've been to before, and you'll appear there, with your main horse , after a transition sequence.

What this means is, even with this unlocked, you cannot decide to jump from somewhere out in the wilderness to another destination - you still have to do that at a camp.

fast travel rdr2 from camp

However, if you are close to a specific location, you can travel around the map through other means...

Other ways to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Whether you've unlocked fast travel from your camp (as described above) or not, there are other ways of jumping round the map.

One is by using the stagecoach . This is an icon with a signpost on it, and is usually at most towns, ranches and other named locations on the map.

Cover image for YouTube video

Provided you've been to that location previously, you can pay to use the stagecoach to that destination.

By the way, if it looks like the Stagecoach is unavailable (there will be a 'lock' symbol on the icon) it means you're likely in a mission, have to pay a bounty or are currently riding your horse - fix these things and you should be good to go.

fast travel rdr2 from camp

The other method is by train . At most larger settlements there is a envelope icon, which indicates a train station. This is not only a postmaster and a place to pay your Wanted bounties, but you can also buy a train ticket to far away destinations.

Unlike the stagecoach, you can take the train to any destination on the list right from the start of Chapter 2 (where the game begins to open up). Not only that, it's usually cheaper than the stagecoach - so if you're somewhere where you have the choice of both, grab the train.

fast travel rdr2 from camp

Of course, though the train goes to more prominent locations and allows you to go there straight away, the stagecoach visits a lot of smaller ranches, so both come in handy.

Either way, both cost money, and since you'll be starting a lot of your trips from your camp, purchasing the camp upgrades to fast travel from there will be better in the long run.

How to fast travel Red Dead Redemption 2

In Red Dead Redemption 2 , you’ll likely find enjoyment in exploring the massive world it has to offer. After all, part of the fun is stumbling across little experiences that you’d miss if you were zipping around the map through fast travel menus. However, you are able to skip much of the exploration if you want by fast traveling — but you’ll need to make a few preparations before you’re able to do so. The game doesn’t explain much about this feature, though, since it wants you to enjoy everything in a slow and methodical way.

Fast traveling from your camp

Fast traveling from town to town.

This guide will walk you through what you need to know about fast traveling in the single-player component of RDR2 .

There are two methods of fast traveling in RDR2 . The first method of fast travel can be unlocked after Chapter 2. You’ll need to play through the main story missions and complete Money Lending and Other Sins. At this point, you’ll unlock the Ledger at your camp, which allows you to purchase items and upgrades to enhance the lives of Arthur and his fellow campers. At this point, make sure you purchase Dutch’s tent (First Things First) for $220, followed by Arthur’s wagon (Next in Line) for $325.

After this, you’ll find a map on the side of Arthur’s tent, allowing you to select various locations across the map to fast travel to. Doing so will result in Arthur taking a stagecoach to the locations around the map. The nice thing is that it’s free and your horse will come with you, making this a convenient and effective method to get around easily. You’ll need to have visited the area you want to fast travel to before it’ll appear as an option on the map.

The other way to fast travel involves taking a stagecoach from town to town. This method is similar to traveling from your camp, only it isn’t free. To use this method, approach one of the Stagecoach locations on your map — indicated by a signpost found in the main towns. When you approach, it’ll list all the locations you’ve visited, with various prices for each, depending on distance. After making a selection, you’ll get a short cut scene of the stagecoach taking off and arriving at your new destination. You can’t continuously fast travel using this method since there’s a short cool-down after you arrive at your destination. Sleep in a hotel to get the stagecoach to appear again if it’s giving you trouble.

There is no way to fast travel without using one of the two methods, meaning if you’re out in the wilderness, you’ll need to ride your horse or walk to the nearest fast-travel location. The game is designed to encourage you to explore, so you’ll want to fill in the map first before making good use of this feature. Once you’ve gone to all the locations on the map, you’ll likely be in the post-game section past the ending credits, so fast traveling will be a lot more essential at that point.

Everyone knows the iconic Spider-Man suit. The red-and-blue spandex uniform has been iterated on and altered hundreds of times over the course of decades, leading to some similar and some very different designs. Spider-Man 2 introduces Venom and the symbiote suit to the mix as a plot point, but there are almost 70 total suits from various comics, shows, and movies to unlock and wear between Peter pParker and Miles Morales. Unlocking them is one thing, but changing between them, and their new styles, is another. With this guide, you will be able to change your spider style as fast as our heroes when duty calls. How to change suits

Once you've snagged your first additional suit and used some Tokens to unlock it, changing between them is a breeze. Simply open your menu, go to the Suits tab, and highlight the one you want to wear. If you want to switch between Peter and Miles, simply hit L2 or R2 to cycle between the Spider-Men since each has their own unique set of suit options. Press X on the suit you want to wear and -- bam! -- your Spider-Man is now decked out in a new style. However, that's not all. Many suits have additional styles you can unlock by spending some Tech Parts. These give you three additional color options for that specific suit to further customize your look.

In the decades that the character of Spider-Man has existed, through comics, TV shows, games, and movies, he's gone through quite a few suits. Spider-Man 2 keeps the tradition alive by not only giving him a new suit to try out, but dozens and dozens of older ones to let you play as your favorite version of the webslinger. Oh, and did we mention Miles has his own extensive set of suits as well? Just like the first game, you won't be handed the keys to the wardrobe for free. Each suit not only needs to be unlocked but also crafted using City and Hero Tokens, as well as Tech parts to get access to the additional styles most suits have. If you're itching to dress up as the Spider-Man of your dreams as soon as you can, here is every suit in Spider-Man 2 and how you unlock them.

Note: Some suits are unlocked via story progress and could be considered spoilers. You have been warned. All suits in Spider-Man 2

The character of Spider-Man is only half of what makes him so interesting. Peter Parker, the man behind the mask, is just as vital to the story as his alter ego in Spider-Man 2. Just as he is in the comics and the first game, Peter is a scientist by trade, and Miles Morales is following in his footsteps in many ways, which is the perfect excuse to introduce some new science-focused puzzles into the game. One new puzzle has you examining different scenes to try and work out what exactly happened so you can determine the materials that were left behind. This puzzle is thrown at the player rather quickly and without much explanation, so we're here to brush up your molecular knowledge so you can solve these with ease. How to solve molecular identification puzzles

When you first start off ,you will be shown a 3D model of some molecule with green, red, and sometimes yellow nodes. Your goal is to remove all the red nodes without destroying any of the green. Yellow can be left or destroyed.

Fast Travel

  • View history

Fast Travel is a mode of travel in Red Dead Redemption , Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online that allows players to traverse long distances across the map quickly. There are three main ways to fast travel, most of which cost money.

  • 1 Red Dead Redemption
  • 2.2 Stagecoach
  • 2.5 Missions
  • 3 Red Dead Online
  • 4 Cinematic Mode
  • 5 Known Bugs
  • 6 External links

Red Dead Redemption [ ]

In Red Dead , the player can fast travel by the means of a Stagecoach Taxi located in almost every settlement. For a price, they can be driven to any of the following locations and have the option to skip to destination.

Destinations are limited to the following:

  • Benedict Point
  • Las Hermanas
  • MacFarlane's Ranch
  • Rathskeller Fork
  • Ridgewood Farm

Red Dead Redemption 2 [ ]

Fast Travel Map - Red Dead Redemption II

Arthur's Fast Travel map

Players have the option to upgrade Arthur Morgan 's camp lodgings, for a price, after the mission " Money Lending and Other Sins I ." The gang will do little to help in this regard, so the task falls to players. Upgrade options can be found next to Dutch van der Linde 's tent wherever the caravan ends up.

Players must pay the first $220 upgrade fee before the next tier evens shows up. It is this next tier, at $325, that unlocks the fast travel map, so players will need $545 total. Once purchased, Arthur's fast travel map appears outside his wagon or inside his room at Shady Belle during Chapter 4 . After completing the first part of the Epilogue, the Fast Travel map will become available free of charge (i.e. no upgrades are needed).

Alternatively to using the map, the player can fast travel using their camps. Upon setting up camp, the player is able to fast travel to the same places they could when using the map.

Note that destinations the player can travel to are entirely dependent upon where they have already been. Due to this, and that it is difficult to raise that amount of money in the early game, players may want to wait until they have traveled to more areas.

  • Armadillo (after Epilogue 1)
  • Beecher's Hope (after Epilogue 1)
  • Benedict Point (after Epilogue 1)
  • Blackwater (after Epilogue 1)
  • Braithwaite Manor
  • Butcher Creek
  • Caliga Hall
  • Cornwall Kerosene & Tar
  • Emerald Ranch
  • MacFarlane's Ranch (after Epilogue 1)
  • Manzanita Post
  • Pronghorn Ranch
  • Saint Denis
  • Thieves' Landing (after Epilogue 1)
  • Tumbleweed (after Epilogue 1)
  • Van Horn Trading Post
  • Wapiti Indian Reservation
  • The gang camp's locations from Chapter 2 to 6 ( Horseshoe Overlook , Clemens Point , Shady Belle , Lakay , and Beaver Hollow ; only available as long as the gang resides within those grounds )

On the side note, using Camp Fast Travel more than once per in-game day empties the player's horse's stamina core.

Stagecoach [ ]

Stagecoach - Red Dead Redemption II

Stagecoach option

Like Red Dead Redemption , Stagecoaches are another fast travel option, and they can be found in most towns. Unlike using the fast travel map, using a stagecoach requires money. Not only that, but players need to be aware of what their level of honor is for that particular town. If their honor is too low, the stagecoach will be locked.

Like the fast travel map, the player will only be able to travel to destinations he has already visited. Stagecoaches, however, cannot take players back to their camp.

  • Emerald Station

If the player wishes, they may also be able to fast travel via purchasing a train ticket at a train station. Tickets for the train, which only runs between select locations, can be purchased at the Post Office. Locations include:

  • Riggs Station
  • Wallace Station

Although traveling by train is noticeably cheaper than using stagecoaches, the reachable destinations are limited within three territories ( West Elizabeth , New Hanover , and Lemoyne ).

If the player is at the countryside of a state and wishes to go to its main town, another alternative of Fast Traveling is to vandal, or kill someone and, after arrival of lawmen, just surrender and they will take the player into the town. However, it will cost the player honor, money, and days in prison.

Missions [ ]

The last alternative option for fast travel comes at the end of some missions. This only requires completion of the mission and accepting the option to travel. Players can, of course, refuse the option if they have other matters to attend to, but this will prevent them from fast traveling back to their camp.

Red Dead Online [ ]

In Red Dead Online , the player can upgrade their camp with an Fast Travel post for $700.00 upon reaching Rank 65.

There are 15 fast travel locations on the map. The cost differs depending on the distance from the current destination.

Cinematic Mode [ ]

Cinematic Mode can be used as a form of "auto run" to reach destinations. To do this, the player must place a waypoint on the map, mount their horse, get up to speed on a road, and hold the touchpad/view button to engage Cinematic Mode. The player's horse will automatically navigate to the waypoint. While not "fast travel" properly said, it does allow the player to put down the controller for a few moments. However, hostiles like rival gangs , bounty hunters and predators will still attack, and sometimes the horse's A.I. fails to deal with traffic on the road as well. Any unique random encounter found by the road may also be lost if the player does not pay attention to them.

Known Bugs [ ]

  • As corpses aren't allowed inside the Van der Linde camp , if the player Fast Travels to it with a dead NPC on horseback, the game will instantly bug as soon as it starts the scene of the player entering its grounds.

Dragon 's Dogma 2 features a vast open-world that contains a huge variety of content for players to explore. From the game's opening moments, the open expanse of the world is on full display. Like many open-world games that have come before it, the question of how to quickly traverse that world becomes a question that many players will seek the answer to.

Where Dragon's Dogma 2 separates itself from its contemporaries, is that many of the game's core mechanics are not readily apparent to those just beginning. Rest assured, however, that Dragon's Dogma 2 does feature a fast-travel system. This guide will explain how that system works, and where players will find the means to use it within the game world.

How to fast-travel in dragon's dogma 2.

This guide is still a work in progress, and will feature all known methods of fast-travel currently known. As more methods become known, they will be added accordingly.

There are two key methods of fast-travel in Dragon's Dogma 2. The methods are as follows:

  • Oxcart Travel
  • Ferrystones & Portcrystals

How to Use Oxcart Travel in Dragon's Dogma 2

Ox-carts are introduced very early in Dragon's Dogma 2, and will likely serve as the most common form of fast-travel during the early portions of the game. Oxcarts follow a few key rules:

  • They only travel along a single set path. The player cannot change or alter an ox-cart's destination. For example, there are ox-carts that run from Melve to Vernworth, and the opposite.
  • Oxcarts cost a single fee for every use. This fee varies depending on the route, but is often a low amount.
  • Oxcarts are only available during the day. Trips can often last into the night, but you can only begin a trip during the day.

How to Use Ferrystones and Portcrystals in Dragon's Dogma 2

Ferrystones and Portcrystals are a system that works more in line with traditional fast-travel systems, but requires players to be much more mindful about when they use it. Each of these two items plays an important role in the process, and works in the following ways:

Ferrystones:

  • Ferrystones are consumable items that are found in treasure chests throughout the game world. Various merchants will have these items in their inventories, but they are fairly expensive. For example, Morris in Checkpoint Rest Town sells them for 10000 gold pieces.
  • Ferrystones are single-use magical stones that expend their energy in order to transport the player to their destination.
  • When a Ferrystone is used, a list of destinations will open up, allowing players to choose their desired location.

Portcrystals:

  • Portcrystals are the destination points for fast-traveling. There are two types of Portcrystals that players will interact with in Dragon's Dogma 2.
  • The first type is permanent, and will be found in the major towns and settlements of DD2. Once players have interacted with a Portcrystal once, it will always be available on the list of destinations.
  • The second type of Portcrystal can be placed by the player at any location in the game-world. The tutorial section explains that players can place up to ten of these Portcrystals, and they can also be picked up and moved to a different location whenever the player chooses. When this type of crystal becomes available is currently unknown. This information will be included here when it is discovered.

If you just started Dragon’s Dogma 2 , it might have come as a shock that this sprawling open-world, role-playing epic is missing one common feature: fast travel. Well, it’s not quite missing, but it’s extremely limited in ways that run counter to the normal rhythms of this hugely popular genre.

The way it usually works in open-world games is this: You set forth on an adventure, heading out to unexplored regions. As you explore, you unlock fast travel points that make it easy to return to those areas. It takes a matter of seconds to get back to town when you need to rest, shop, or turn in quests. Even in games that prioritize organic exploration and discovery — like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom — fast travel is available, and usually free. It’s just accepted as a necessary addition to make these huge game worlds manageable.

Dragon’s Dogma director Hideaki Itsuno and his team at Capcom feel differently about it. In keeping with the many ways Dragon’s Dogma 2 intentionally makes your life difficult — restricting game saves to prevent save-scumming, for example — the approach to fast travel puts realism and immersion over convenience.

There are, in fact, three automatic travel options in the game: oxcarts, ropeways, and Portcrystals . Most wouldn’t really call oxcarts fast travel since they’re painfully slow, only run along a few set routes between towns, and, although you can nap to pass the time, your journey might be interrupted by bandit or monster attacks. Ropeways come with their own hazards , as they’re subject to aerial attack — and it’s a long way down.

Portcrystals resemble traditional fast travel, but with a couple of huge caveats. You need to use a Ferrystone to warp to one, and these are a very rare and precious resource. There are only a handful of Portcrystals in major locations across the entire game. If you can obtain your own Portcrystal you can place it wherever you like, but these items are rarer still.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 party at a campsite

All this means that during general play, fast travel is out, either because it’s too expensive or too inconvenient. You’re going to have to make your way on foot, and it’s going to take time — especially considering that nighttime hikes are inadvisable, so you’re encouraged to make camp for the night. Sounds tedious, right? Why did Capcom design the game this way?

The answer Itsuno has given in interviews is the one designers often give when they explain why they’ve chosen to cut back on travel convenience. To paraphrase: It’s about making sure players spend their time out in the world discovering stuff. “We’ve put a lot of work into designing a game where you can stumble across someone and something will happen, so while it’s fine if it does have fast travel, we decided to design the map in a way that the journey [itself] could be enjoyed,” Itsuno told IGN ,

It’s true that Dragon’s Dogma 2 has an unusually dense map that’s teeming with activity and primed for all sorts of random happenstance — even more so than the recent Zeldas. The more players zip themselves from point to point across this dynamic anecdote-generation machine, the less opportunity there would be for the unexpected discoveries and events that make the game so memorable, whether it’s a fight with an accident-prone cyclops or crossing paths with a pawn who might change your life. But, in truth, Itsuno only gave half an answer.

Yes, open-world games like this should be about the journey. But most of them are specifically about the journey of discovery. Dragon’s Dogma 2 is also about the return journey, making your way back, often by a different route to see what else you can find. It’s about conserving your resources, balancing the risk and reward of exploration, thinking about how much you can carry, and keeping a wary eye on the sun as it descends toward the horizon.

I love this stuff. I love anything that makes me feel present in the world the developers have created and that makes distances feel real. I love games that resist the habit of optimizing time spent playing them ; that, with a gentle but firm hand, encourage the player to just live in the moment, immersed in their adventure, rather than to play with one eye on a to-do list.

A pair of harpies attack an Arisen and their pawns on a ropeway gondola in a screenshot from Dragon’s Dogma 2

Travel is a hugely important part of interaction with game worlds — both practically and emotionally — so I get why Itsuno and his team pushed back against the impulse to skip it. Even though fast travel is easy in Spider-Man 2 , my son never uses it because he just loves web-slinging so much. (You should see him go soaring and pirouetting through New York City — it’s poetry in motion.) I know many people were bored by the long, featureless sailing trips of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker , but those moments of wind-blown calm, scored by the quiet rushing of the waves against the hull of Link’s little boat, are some of my most treasured gaming memories, a permanent happy place. Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding makes a whole game out of packing your bag and going for a hike, and its rugged landscape is the only other character that game really needed.

I don’t think World of Warcraft would have become half the sensation it did were it not for its approach to travel. When building the MMO two decades ago, Blizzard insisted that there would be no loading screens breaking up its huge landmasses, and that — with the exception of a Hearthstone item that would take you back to the inn of your choice on a one-hour cooldown — the only way to cross its distances would be to fly across them in real time by air taxi, watching the landscape scroll past below. In theory, this was dead time; while in the air, you couldn’t do anything but chat to your friends. But it was one of the things that made that world feel so real.

Restricting fast travel isn’t the only way to foster this kind of relationship with a game world, but it’s one of the most effective. And, for Dragon’s Dogma 2 , it was the right one. (Personally, I would have cut the Portcrystals completely; they don’t feel like they fit the world, and introducing fast travel only to make it awkward and expensive is a bit too contrarian. The lumbering oxcarts and treacherous ropeways fit right in, though.) Capcom’s game is a capricious, random, surprising, brilliantly conceived adventure simulator, and one of the few games to recognize that adventures are about the journey home home as well as heading out. If it had allowed you to warp back at the end of a quest, it would simply have cut itself in half.

How to fast travel in Dragon's Dogma 2

Jump in the ox cart, because you’re too tele-poor to teleport

Dragon's Dogma 2 fast travel - Ox cart

  • Ferrystones and Portcrystals
  • Portable Portcrystals

In January, Dragon’s Dogma 2 director Hideaki Itsuno made his personal opinions about easy fast travel commutes very clear . Players familiar with the original Dragon’s Dogma remember shilling out thousands of gold for Ferrystones in an expensive effort to give their feet a rest. Unsurprisingly, tracking down these mythical items—or paying top dollar for them—is still very much a thing in the sequel.

Sure, traveling by foot opens up opportunities to stumble on quests, find treasure or useful materials, or get absolutely smoked by a Griffin with zero warning because of your underleveled pawns . But sometimes, you’ve only got an hour to play before your dinner plans or bedtime and you’d like to get that annoying quest turned in pronto. Thankfully, Dragon’s Dogma 2 introduces a second form of fast travel—though calling it ‘fast’ is a bit of a misnomer.

Take a scenic ox cart ride

Using an ox cart is the cheapest and most common way to quickly travel from place to place in Dragon's Dogma 2. These bumbling vehicles connect all major settlements you’ve discovered. You first gain access to use a couple of ox carts freely upon your arrival in Vernworth, either to Melve via its north gate, or the Checkpoint Rest Town via the west gate.

You’ll sometimes see an ox cart rambling past as you’re out exploring. Feel free to jump in for a quick escape back to a safe settlement. If you want to summon an ox cart, you can find a bell near the gates to most towns, and interacting with them will pass the time until a cart is ready to leave.

Either chat with the driver or sit in the back to start your journey, which usually costs between one and three hundred gold, and then doze off at your leisure. You can’t choose where you go, either—this isn’t a fantastical Uber situation. The driver will let you know if you're lucky enough to reach your destination.

But not at night (and you might get attacked)

The inclusion of oxcarts as an added fast travel option is welcome, but they have their limitations. Ox carts don’t travel at night , and traveling via this new method isn’t instantaneous—it can take half a day or longer to reach your final destination. You can choose to take a snooze to pass some time, but if you’re trying to reach a timed quest, it’s possible that you won’t make it as quickly as you should.

To make things worse, ox carts are frequently attacked by monsters out in the world, and no, you can’t just sleep through a battle. You’ll need to disembark and slaughter your foes before getting back on track. If the beast is big and bad enough, it can destroy your ox cart entirely, forcing you to hoof it the rest of the way.

Go Ferrystone shopping and attune to Portcrystals

Many settlements in Dragon’s Dogma 2 have shiny purple beacons called Portcrystals . These are permanent fast travel points and must be activated before they can be used—simply approach one in order to unlock it.

Attuning to these crystals doesn’t mean you can open your map and start teleporting around willy-nilly. A one-time-use item called a Ferrystone is required to fast travel, and these rare and expensive items aren’t found in any large quantity until later in the game. Ferrystones come in handy when aiming to complete time-sensitive quests.

The easiest way to snag your first Ferrystone is at Philbert’s Sundries in Vernworth, though it’ll set you back a cool 10,000g. The good news, however, is that Philbert restocks his Ferrystone every three days , and this might be the case for other merchants with them, too. Finding a Seeker’s Token and turning it into the Vocation Guild in the city will also unlock one of these handy items.

Track down portable Portcrystals for luxury fast travel

The Cadillac of Dragon’s Dogma 2 fast travel comes in the form of portable Portcrystals . These extremely rare reusable items allow you to place a fast travel marker anywhere on your map, and these can be moved at any time. You can only place 10 at once, but finding that many may prove a formidable challenge anyway.

To help you begin your portable Portcrystal journey, chat with the elf, Glyndwr, hanging out near Roderick’s Smithy in Vernworth. Helping him will trigger a series of quests that leads you to a hidden elf village. Completing the lengthy chain earns you your very first Portcrystal. You can also get one via the main story for helping Captain Brant complete his quests.

Unfortunately, you’ll still need Ferrystones to make use of these beacons, but it’s something to aspire to if you’re after ease of movement, or have a quest that requires frequent revisits to the same location.

Given how much emphasis Itsuno and his team put on making the world alive and ever-evolving, using your own two legs the majority of the time seems like the best option for getting around. Convenience isn’t the name of this Capcom game.

How to fast travel - Dragon's Dogma 2

Portcrystals, ferrystones, oxcarts, and walking: The art of fast traveling in Dragon's Dogma 2.

Sam Chandler

There are a lot of modern systems in Dragon’s Dogma 2 that aren’t as approachable or easy to understand as some players might expect. One of these is fast travel, which is set up in a rather old-school manner whereby it is possible but it’s not free. Additionally, you’re not free to fast travel wherever you want, it’s only in extremely specific locations (and sometimes a few places of your choosing). Here’s how fast travel works (and no, you don’t need to buy any microtransactions).

Fast travel to portcrystal

Players and their pawns can only fast travel to portcrystals in Dragon’s Dogma 2 and doing this costs one ferrystone . These crystals can be found in major cities, like the one behind the Pawn Guild in Vernworth. Players can also place ten portcrystals wherever they want and fast travel to them. This is like setting up a teleporter location around the world.

The portcrystal fast travel map

Once you’ve placed a portcrystal, you can leave it there as long as you like and you’ll always be able to fast travel to it. However, you can also recover the crystal and place it in a new location. Ideally, you’ll place these in areas you need to get to frequently that aren’t available via oxcart or another nearby portcrystal.

Finding and using Ferrystones

Ferrystones are what you will use to travel to a portcrystal . When you have one in your inventory, select it and choose “use” and you will be shown a map with all available portcrystals. Pick the one you want and you will be transported to it instantly, consuming the ferrystone in the process.

The player finds a ferrystone in a chest

You will typically receive ferrystones by completing quests, searching and looting dungeons, and defeating enemies. They’re not super easy to acquire early on, so it’s a good idea to avoid unnecessary fast travel when you’re just starting.

The next best means of “fast” travel is the humble oxcart. These can be found at major settlements and will take you to another location for a small fee. The main disadvantage is that oxcarts only go to a few places around the map. If you want to get somewhere specific, your best bet is to take an oxcart part of the way there and then walk.

The player prepares to purchase passage on an oxcart

While using a portcrystal is instantaneous and no time will pass, when using an oxcart time will tick on at its usual rate. This means when you arrive, part of the day will be gone. Make sure you’re leaving enough time to do whatever you need to do when you get there, as some quests are time-sensitive.

Finally, the least fast method of fast travel is to go on foot. Literally walking from one location to another. Chances are you’ll be running for a bit, letting your stamina recover, and then running some more. Just keep in mind that traveling at night is a death wish. As soon as the sun sets, find a camping spot and rest until the morning.

The player finds a golden trove beetle while walking

The advantage of this method of travel is you’ll find all sorts of things. Your pawns will point out interesting locations and you can collect various resources so you can craft your potions.

Traveling around the world of Dragon’s Dogma 2 can be fast or incredibly slow. Those who want to fast travel should focus on acquiring ferrystones and placing ten portcrystals to travel to. Everyone else should find the nearest oxcart or lace up those walking boots. While you’re strolling along the road, read over our Dragon’s Dogma 2 page for more help understanding this world.

It’s located just a few steps away from the Kremlin Wall and is one of the most controversial yet popular Moscow attractions!

Admission is free for everyone, you’ll only need to pay if you need to check a bag. Before visitors are allowed to enter the mausoleum, they have to go through a metal detector first. No metal objects, liquids, or large bags are allowed in the mausoleum!

Lenins Mausoleum

Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow

  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance for Moscow

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

fast travel rdr2 from camp

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

fast travel rdr2 from camp

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

fast travel rdr2 from camp

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

fast travel rdr2 from camp

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

fast travel rdr2 from camp

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

fast travel rdr2 from camp

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

fast travel rdr2 from camp

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

fast travel rdr2 from camp

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

fast travel rdr2 from camp

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

fast travel rdr2 from camp

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

  27. City Street Guides by f.d. walker:

An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest.
