“Barbie Girl” group Aqua is launching a 20-concert tour that will take them all over North America from Nov. 12 through Dec. 20; this run of shows comes on the heels of a brief U.S. trek this summer.

“We’ve been working for this for 27 years,” the trio said in a statement. “We cannot wait to meet everyone for the first time, face to face.”

Aqua Launch ‘Barbie World Tour’ with Dates Across the US in 2023

Danish Europop group Aqua announces its Barbie World Tour with a US leg throughout the rest of 2023.

Aqua, the Danish Europop group best known for their 1997 hit, “Barbie Girl,” announces its Barbie World Tour on Friday, August 25, with dates across the United States throughout the rest of 2023. The tour launches in Seattle at the Paramount Theatre on November 12, with the US leg wrapping up on December 20 at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium.

“America, you wanna go for a ride?” asks Europop band Aqua on their Instagram post announcing the launch of their Barbie World Tour, with the US leg launching in Seattle on November 12 and wrapping up in Los Angeles on December 20.

Following the heels of the band’s return to the cultural zeitgeist after more than 15 years with the launch of the Barbie movie , Danish Europop dance group Aqua is here to bring you back to the ’90s. The band headlined shows at Irving Plaza in New York City and The Belasco in Los Angeles in June and July and are ready to embark on a world tour.

“We’ve been working on this for 27 years!” the band writes on social media. “Performing two sold-out shows in NYC and LA this summer was a dream come true, and to be able to come back soon for a nationwide tour is absolutely insane. We cannot wait to meet everyone for the first time, face to face.”

Newfound cultural interest in Aqua’s 1997 hit “Barbie Girl” from the band’s debut album, “Aquarium,” comes thanks to the blockbuster “Barbie” film — boasting a box office total of $1.3 billion as of this weekend. Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s song from the film’s soundtrack, “Barbie World,” samples Aqua’s track and credits the trio, and debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard all-genre chart dated July 8, marking Nicki’s 23rd Top 10 hit, and Aqua and Ice Spice’s second.

The general public sale begins Wednesday, August 30, at 10 AM ET, while the Spotify Fans First pre-sale begins Monday, August 28, at 10 AM ET.

You wanna go for a ride back to the ’90s? AQUA is here to deliver. The Danish dance- pop group announced its Barbie World Tour on Friday (Aug. 25) with dates across the United States in an appropriately pink photo. The trek kicks off in Seattle at the historic Paramount Theatre on Nov. 12, and wraps right before Christmas, on Dec. 20 at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium.

The tour comes as AQUA’s 1997 hit “Barbie Girl” off its debut album, Aquarium , has found renewed interest with the arrival of the mega blockbuster Barbie movie, which boasts a current box-office total of $1.3 billion, according to The Hollywood Reporter . Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s “Barbie World” song from the film’s soundtrack samples AQUA’s Billboard Hot 100 No. 7-peaking tune; the new track — which the trio is credited on — from the rappers debuted at No. 7 on the all-genre tally dated July 8. It became Minaj’s 23rd top 10, and Ice Spice and AQUA’s second.

The S potify Fans First presale begins Monday (Aug. 28) at 10 a.m. ET. The general public will be able to buy tickets starting Wednesday (Aug. 30) at 10 a.m. ET.

Aqua on 'Barbie Girl' Resurgence, Grammy Nods and US Tour: 'It's Been Out-of-This-World Fantastic!' (Exclusive)

The Danish group tells PEOPLE about how Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice's 'Barbie World' rework of their signature hit has given them a new wave of success

After nearly three decades in the business, Aqua 's party is still going strong.

The Danish Eurodance group had a massive 2023, thanks to their signature hit "Barbie Girl" getting reworked by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice for the Barbie film, which earned the band a new wave of stateside success in the forms of a top-10 hit, two Grammy nominations, a U.S. tour and a spot in the lineup of this year's Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with  Ryan Seacrest   2024.

"It's been out-of-this-world fantastic," keyboardist Søren Rasted tells PEOPLE of Aqua's whirlwind year while backstage at a concert venue.

"We didn't know we had this many fans in America," says vocalist Lene Nystrøm. "We are just blown away."

"It's been many, many, many years since we've played a concert where we basically could have been taking the microphone, put it down, and everybody was singing all the lyrics, all the songs — like, really f---ing loud," adds vocalist René Dif. "And that is very impressive."

Before this year, Aqua hadn't properly toured the U.S. since "Barbie Girl" first became a hit around the release of the band's 1997 debut album Aquarium . Back then, Søren, Lene and René (as well as former member Claus Norreen) were more focused on launching their career than taking in each moment — something they're able to do now.

"This time, you actually get to take in what the fans are telling you, and they've all got a beautiful story to tell [of] what the music did for them," says Lene, 50. "It's very, very touching."

"Barbie Girl" remains prominent in pop culture today, but there was no guarantee that 2023's Barbie would have much of an impact on the song. Last year, Lene's former manager Ulrich Møller-Jørgensen told Variety there was no plan for the song to be featured in the blockbuster film.

At the time, the band understood the team behind the Greta Gerwig-directed movie might want to focus on current music rather than nostalgia. But leading actress Margot Robbie later told Rolling Stone she and Gerwig wanted to include "Barbie Girl" — and succeeded, as soundtrack producer Mark Ronson then crafted "Barbie World," which samples Aqua's original track, with Minaj and Ice Spice.

Not only is the inclusion of "Barbie Girl" in Barbie fitting for the film, but it also marks a shift in the brand's parent company Mattel's view of the classic novelty hit. In 2000, the corporation sued Aqua's then-label MCA Records and claimed the song violated Barbie's trademark and sexualized the kids toy with its cheeky lyrics. ("I'm a blonde bimbo girl in a fantasy world," sings Lene on the track.)

The lawsuit was dismissed in 2002, with a court ruling "Barbie Girl" was protected as a work of parody under the First Amendment. Less than a decade later, Mattel used the song in a promotional video for Barbie dolls.

"It's all about getting attention, isn't it? And they got attention," reflects Lene, while Søren adds: "I think they're cool about everything."

The brand likely doesn't regret mending its relationship with Aqua. Since its release, "Barbie World" has become a smash hit and reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 — coincidentally the same peak position "Barbie Girl" achieved in 1997. While the group hasn't spoken to either rapper about the collaboration, Lene says she "absolutely" likes the new song: "Absolutely. I love Nicki. I think she's amazing."

The cherry on top? "Barbie World" is now nominated in two categories (best rap song and best song written for visual media) at the upcoming 2024 Grammy Awards, marking Aqua's first nods at the annual show. (The group did, however, win seven trophies at the 1998 Danish Music Awards, the country's equivalent of the Grammys.)

Søren recalls learning about the nominations shortly after Aqua touched down in the U.S. for their tour, which wrapped earlier this month. "It couldn't have been a better timing actually," he says. "What a better way to start that?"

"Now, we're waiting for our invitation [to the ceremony]," jokes Lene. "We'll get there."

The year of Barbie may be coming to an end, but if Aqua's many sold-out concerts in the U.S. are any indicator, the band's fandom is fully reignited. The trio will send off 2023 with performances of "Barbie Girl" and "Doctor Jones," another Aquarium single. "It's a huge honor just to be there," says Lene.

While Aqua doesn't have concrete plans to release new music in the foreseeable future — "Our legacy is hard to beat," quips Lene — the band looks to continue touring the world, and they're open to the idea of remixing more of their early hits alongside other artists.

René, 56, would revisit "Lollipop," as he's seen "people freak out" when they play the track live, while Lene wants to breathe new life into "Back from Mars."

Søren has a more left-of-center song he'd like to look back on from their largely high-energy discography: "For some reason I'd love to see one of the ballads work over here [in the U.S.]"

Whatever's next for Aqua, the band members are ready. This year has taught them just how passionate their U.S. fans remain. "We should've done this 10 years ago," Søren jokes of returning to America.

"We didn't know that we could, actually," admits Lene.

"It is just so fantastic to be a part of something that people have loved and love so much now," adds Rene. "We're very grateful to our fans."

The indie veterans – who consist of frontman Simon Fowler, guitarist Steve Cradock and drummer Oscar Harrison – have promised to roll through their greatest hits at the shows, including the singles ‘The Day We Caught The Train’, ‘The Riverboat Song’, ‘The Circle’ and ‘Traveller’s Tune’.

“This feels like the first proper tour Ocean Colour Scene have done in years,” said Cradock. “Last year we managed six dates because of the World Cup, and the year before COVID was still scaring people, so we are going to make it something special.”

Harrison agreed, and shared the band’s enthusiasm to conclude the tour in Glasgow: “Looking forward to seeing everyone on tour – and we’re very happy that the final night will take place in Glasgow, a city with whom Ocean Colour Scene has always had a very special relationship.”

Speaking as part of NME ‘s Does Rock ‘N’ Roll Kill Braincells?! , he discussed how The Sun revealed his sexuality in 1998, shortly after the release of Ocean Colour Scene’s third album, ‘Marchin’ Already’.

“Looking back now, it seems absurd – and I don’t think anybody gave a toss even then,” he said. “In fact, when it happened, the first thing Liam Gallagher did was come up and kiss me on the lips! Everybody knew – apart from my parents. But now, I’ve been with my partner, Robert, for 34 years, and my parents have accepted him into the family.”

If you’ve been itching for a nostalgic trip to the bubblegum pop explosion of the 1990s, you’re in luck. Aqua , the charismatic dance-pop group behind the global hit “Barbie Girl,” is hitting the road this fall.

Their 2023 Barbie World Tour will kick off November 12 in Seattle and continue to U.S. cities through the year’s end. Fans in attendance can expect “a kaleidoscopic explosion of ’90s wonder, where glitter, pink, and pulsating beats reign supreme,” according to a press release.

The record-breaking success of the Greta Gerwig-produced film  Barbie , released in July, has sparked new interest in the chart-topping group’s playful trademark single. Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice joined forces for a track featured on the film’s official soundtrack, which samples the iconic chorus from Aqua’s “Barbie Girl.” The massive success of their collaboration led to Aqua’s unexpected resurgence onto pop radio, resulting in “Barbie Girl” earning a Triple Platinum certification in the U.S. in July.

“We’ve been working for this for 27 years! Performing two sold-out shows in NYC and L.A. this summer was a dream come true, and to be able to come back soon for a nationwide tour is absolutely insane,” the Europop act says in a statement. “We cannot wait to meet everyone for the first time, face to face.”

Asia (founded in 1981) is a British progressive rock supergroup formed of fallen flagship progressive rock bands King Crimson, Yes and Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

The original members: John Wetton, formerly the vocalist/bassist of King Crimson, Family, Roxy Music; Steve Howe, formerly the guitarist of Yes; Geoff Downes, formerly keyboardist of Yes and The Buggles; and Carl Palmer formerly drummer of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, all had significant experience before being brought together. In 1980 Wetton and Howe were put together by music scout John Kalodner at Geffen Records and the two then started writing material for a new album. The year after Palmer joined along with Howe’s fellow Yes cohort Geoff Downes.

The band’s first musical releases were seen as disappointing by critics and progressive-rock fans, classed as easily accessible radio-friendly rock, although they found new interest from fans of popular classic rock acts Journey, Boston and Styx.

Asia’s debut self-titled album released March 1982 represented a huge commercial success for the band. The album spent nine weeks at No. 1 in the U.S. album chart, selling over 10 million copies worldwide and has never been out of print. Singles “Only Time Will Tell and “Heat of the Moment” contributed to this success becoming popular Top 40 hits, the latter of which, arguably Asia’s most recognised song, climbed to No. 4 on the Hot 100. After the release the band set out on a tour of various U.S. theatres however had to expand to massive arenas due to their popularity and high ticket demand, and went on to win a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1982.

Despite maintaining a devoted following and receiving considerable television and radio attention, none of Asia’s subsequent albums ever achieved the commercial success of the first. Their follow-up “Alpha” released July 1983, produced the singles “Eye to Eye”, “My Own Time” and “The Smile Has Left Your Eyes” which became huge fan favourites. Based on the ‘disappointing’ success of “Alpha”, Wetton was booted from the group in 1983 and replaced by former bandmate of King Crismon and ELP frontman Greg Lake only for Wetton to return in 1984 to start work on the new album.

Asia’s third album titled “Arcadia” before a change to “Astra” was released in November 1985 which performed worse than “Alpha” and “Asia” and resulted in the label cancelling the subsequent tour. The band went through a period of being more off than on, with line-up changes occurring frequently.

In 1990 Asia released “Then & Now”, a best-of album with four new tracks which received substantial airplay and led to two sold-out nights in the Soviet Union in front of 20,000 fans. The band toured here and there for albums “Aqua” in 1992, “Aria” in 1994, “Arena” in 1996, “Aura” in 2001 and “Silent Nation” in 2004.

2012 saw the return of the original Asia line-up and with it the album “XXX” which featured the popular ingle “Face on the Bridge”. Shortly after Howe announced his departure from the group to pursue other things, and the band introduced guitarist Sam Coulson who contributed to the 2014 album “Gravitas”.

Live reviews

I won't belabor the background of these icons of progressive rock - John Wetton, Carl Palmer, and Geoff Downs... sadly, Steve Howe decided to focus on solo work and Yes' tour (ironically - Geoff was on the same Yes tour... saw them only a month or so ago - thanks for coming back Geoff!). That said - the 27-year-old Sam Coulson not only filled the spot, but left his own mark as well. Coming in from touring with Carl Palmer's band, he was a perfect fit to a rockin' evening. I won't belabor the setlist - just to say that it ranged the entire expanse of their career, some, Wetton was clear to point out, that were written before Coulson was even born. :-) While I've seen each play separately in their own accord (except for Coulton), together as Asia, they exhibit true mastery. Some will say that Asia "sold out to pop" (well, Downes is credited with the very first music video with the Bangles...), it was obvious that each not only performed flawlessly, but they were having a lot of fun doing it! Of particular note - each time I have ween Wetton perform, he is not only a great bassist, but a true lyricist. You see and feel his emotion... especially in "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes"... However, Carl Palmer's drumming, and in particular, his extended solo, stole the show. I have to first state that I actually cringe at the "obligatory drum solo", as very few really make it worth one's while to listen. This was clearly amongst the best I've seen, and I've seen quite a few. Moves I've *never* seen before (LOVED his undulating one stick on a cymbal while tapping and maintaining the undulation with the other... hard to describe... incredible to watch. Although Asia is considered a supergroup consisting of various members from well respected progressive rock bands, they have consolidated their sound into something unique and of their own.

The band’s members have performed in some of the highest caliber progressive rock bands out there. John Wetton played bass for King Crimson, Steve Howe played guitar for Yes, Geoff Downes played keyboards for Yes, and Carl Palmer played drums for Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. Each member brings their unique style to Asia, but as a collective they are able to create their own sound. Although Asia has some highly technical progressive rock elements to their music, they are able to play straight forward rock songs that will immediately grasp your attention such as “Heat of the Moment”.

Asia is absolutely fantastic live. Carl Palmer rocks away on his huge drum kit consisting of double bass drums and two gongs positioned behind him. Geoff Downes is surrounded by a tower of synthesizers, which allows him to create ethereal, ambient sounds on and produces incredibly catchy leads. John Wetton keeps the rhythm pulsing with his intricate bass playing and he manages to sing every note in the perfect timbre, reaching incredible vocal ranges. Steve Howe often plays simple, but catchy chord progressions that have a strong force. He often shreds a few solos on his guitar, but never manages to draw it out into irritable lengths like some progressive rock bands have been known to do.

Asia has been consistently releasing albums and touring since their formation. On their most recent tour you can expect them to play through their classic songs like “Only Time Will Tell” and “Sole Survivor”, as well as play through some of their newest tracks from their 2014 release, Gravitas.

Awesome totallyawsome. Having a meet and greet with the band and having the priveledge of watching the show from backstage made it a dream come true. All the asia classics were performed as well as elp fanfare and buggles video killed the radio star. It was a celebration of life for john wetton and it was extraordinary and rare. Sound was spot on. I'll never forget it. Asia rocks!!!!

The tenth running of the Aquae Sulis Classic Tour will take place on Sunday 9th July 2023. The event is now a main fixture in the Bath Motor Club calendar and has been on the HRCR Scenic Tours calendar for several years. The organising team stays the same for the tenth year.

This year’s event will visit some new venues not used before with a different route to our normal area, of about 110 miles, through Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire. Lunch will be taken at Chavenage House near Tetbury (used for the filming of the TV series Poldark). The event will be £90 to enter, this being slightly higher than previous years due to venues having to absorb the rise in prices in general.

We have been told by all venues that dogs are allowed outside in the grounds of the venues, as long as they are on leads.

The entry has been restricted to 70 vehicles to enable the venues to serve us in good time, so we recommend that you get your entry in earlier.

2023 UK and European shows ANNOUNCED

UPDATE: Due to incredible interest in the 2023 UK/European shows, extra dates have been added for Barcelona, Naples, Milan and Amsterdam ahead of the general sale, which begins at 10am local time tomorrow (Thursday). See below for details.

The morning after completing their run of six sold out nights at London’s Wembley Stadium, the band have announced further European and UK stadium shows for their Music Of The Spheres World Tour in summer 2023.

The dates include the tour’s first visits to Portugal, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands, alongside UK shows in Manchester and Cardiff.
