Here’s how to do a DIY walking tour of Manhattan, from top to bottom

Up for a challenge? Here’s a guide and a map to try this DIY walking tour yourself.

Rossilynne Skena Culgan

“Today, we are walking from the tippity top of Manhattan to the tippity bottom of Manhattan,” one of the characters declares on the beloved New York City-set show Broad City . So we wanted to know what it would be like to indeed walk from the tippity top to the tippity bottom of Manhattan.

Turns out, it’s about a 14-mile (almost 15-mile) journey through multiple neighborhoods, all of Central Park, and through layers of Manhattan history. We created a guide on exactly how to embark on this epic adventure yourself and a map with key points on the walk .

RECOMMENDED: 15 uniquely New York habits people pick up after living here

A map showing points along the walking tour.

This trek has been dubbed The Broad City Challenge , but the journey has been popular for a while, even finding its way into a film . On Broad City , Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer’s journey holds wisdom for all of us: Bring water, embrace an athleisure look, and wear comfortable sneakers—no platform shoes!

We’ve got more tips at the bottom just below our step-by-step guide, so let’s go:

A sign reading Dyckman Street at the subway station.

1. Dyckman Street station

Save your energy by taking the subway to your first stop at Dyckman Street Station. Technically, Manhattan extends a bit further north than Dyckman, but that’s where the Broad City gals started, so that’s where we started, too.

Get ready for about an hour’s walk after you get off the train. You’ll head down Broadway past Fort Tryon Park, a bunch of low-rise brick apartment buildings, many buzzing businesses with signs in Spanish, and some stunning street art. The terrain is hilly up here, so be prepared for your calves to feel it.

About halfway to your next stop, you’ll see the GWB Market, part of the George Washington Bridge Bus Station, just past the George Washington Bridge. This behemoth mid-century showpiece was designed in 1963 by Italian architect and engineer Pier Luigi Nervi, The Curious Uptowner explained , calling it “a visual jolt of soaring lines and bold geometric patterns made from reinforced concrete.” In addition to its architectural splendor, it’s also a good stop for a bathroom break if you need one.

Though we’ll be using Broadway for much of the journey, after 169th, bear east off of Broadway onto Saint Nicholas Avenue then turn onto 160th to get to Morris-Jumel Mansion.

The exterior the Morris-Jumel Mansion.

2. Morris-Jumel Mansion

As Abbi says in the show, “this has just been here the whole time?!” It’s a fitting reaction to this fascinating relic.

The white clapboard house is one of the nation’s foremost historic house museums and Manhattan’s oldest surviving residence dating back to 1765. The home served as the headquarters for General George Washington as well as the British military and Hessian troops during the American Revolution. Tours are offered Friday-Sunday if you’re visiting on a weekend.

For even more history, take a peek at the row of houses next to the museum on Sylvan Terrace. These 20 wooden townhouses date back to 1882, and walking along the street feels like being transported to another time and another place. The homes were designed by architect Gilbert Robinson Jr. as part of one of the first residential projects in the area, which was at that time mostly farmland, Untapped Cities reported .

The exterior of the Apollo Theater.

3. Apollo Theater

Continue walking south along Saint Nicholas Avenue where you might be able to catch a glimpse of the supertalls at Columbus Circle if you glance up at just the right time. If you’re feeling daunted at this point, that’s OK. You’ve already covered a lot of ground, and a lunch break is coming up soon.

Soon, you’ll turn onto 125th Street (aka Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard), home to Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater. Dating back to its opening in 1913, the Apollo has played a major role in the emergence of jazz, swing, bebop, R&B, gospel, blues, and soul. The Apollo continues today with its mission as a beacon for the arts in America . Stop by for a photo with the legendary marquee and plan a day to come back when you have time for a tour .

The exterior of Red Rooster in Harlem.

4. Red Rooster

Continue along 125th to take a lunch break at Red Rooster , Marcus Samuelsson’s Harlem bistro with entrees like the Lenox smash burger, crispy bird sandwich, and pan-fried catfish. As our Time Out reviewer put it, “All of this food is as relaxed as the setting itself: breezy and cheerful. The sprawling space is inviting and buzzy, the definitive place to be north of 110th Street.”

Ilana and Abbi eat here during their tour, too, and of course, take copious photos. Shortly after this point in their journey, our friends from Broad City fall into a manhole (true NYC nightmare) and end up in Midtown, so we’ll fill in the gaps on our own.

The interior of the Hungarian Pastry Shop with its menu visible and a sign reading "expect a miracle today."

5. Hungarian Pastry Shop

It’s time for dessert, and the Hungarian Pastry Shop is worth the teeny tiny detour. Head west on 125th to Amsterdam Avenue, and then walk down to 111th where you’ll find this haven for baked goods.

Order the eclair, and be sure to savor this creamy, chocolatey piece of divinity. Also take a moment to look around and know that the next great American novel just might be underway on someone’s notebook or laptop in the cafe, as it’s a beacon for the city’s literari. Here are 10 books written at The Hungarian Pastry Shop to add to your list.

Finally, order a to-go hot or cold drink (depending on the weather) and head east on 110th to Central Park, admiring The Cathedral of St. John the Divine —one of the largest churches in the world—on your way.

A path in Central Park with leafy green trees.

6. Central Park

We’ll get back to Broadway soon enough, but for now, head through Central Park from the North Woods down to Columbus Circle. It’s easiest to stay on West Drive the whole time, which will wind past the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, the Delacorte Theater, Strawberry Fields, and Sheep Meadow.

Whenever you need to, grab a park bench to take a break and soak up the splendor of this respite in the heart of the city. Just a note that there are plenty of bathrooms in the park (the ones by Tavern on the Green are typically the tidiest in my experience).

Columbus Monument

7. Columbus Circle

Exit the park through Columbus Circle and get back onto Broadway, which we’ll take all the way to the end. If you’re starting to get jealous of everyone on a bike or electric scooter, same.

A view of Times Square.

8. Times Square

I know, I know, I’m sorry this route takes you through Times Square, but it really is the most direct path. Try to make the best of it (I saw a guy dancing on a scooter much to the delight of tourists in one of those The Ride buses with the giant windows). I’m going to warn you: The temptation to stop at the Times Square Krispy Kreme at this point will be strong.

The storefront of the Macy's at Herald Square with a sign reading The World's Largest Store.

9. Herald Square

Breeze through this cute parklet and wave hello to this massive Macy’s.

A view of the Flatiron Building.

10. The Flatiron Building

Continue on Broadway to the Flatiron District, home to the triangular stunner called the Flatiron Building. Even though it’s still under scaffolding , this architectural wonder is a sight to behold.

Across from the Flatiron, you’ll find Eataly, the Italian market that’s always worth a quick stop for a sweet treat or a snack. P.S. This is another convenient bathroom stop if you need one.

Union Square with farmers' market tents.

11. Union Square

If you can, try to plan your trip on a Greenmarket Day where you can immerse yourself in the sights and smells of this beloved farmers’ market in historic Union Square.

If you’re not too tired by this point, see if you can find Union Square’s Temperance fountain. During the Temperance movement, these fountains tried to encourage Americans to drink water, rather than booze. Here’s a tip from Ephemeral New York on where to find it.

P.S. It seems like from here, our Broad City counterparts headed further east to go for a boozy (and hilarious) meal at Russ & Daughters, so go for that if you have time! But we stayed on Broadway to continue on the most direct route.

A sculpture by Mark di Suvero in Zuccotti Park.

12. Zuccotti Park

Stay on Broadway all the way to Zuccotti Park, passing through Soho along the way where you’ll notice everyone’s outfits get about 10 times cooler. You’ll also notice that we’re out of numbered streets territory and that means the finish line is approaching.

Once you make it to the park, don’t miss the 70-foot-tall red sculpture called Joie de Vivre by Mark di Suvero. Also take a moment to glance around at the buildings, noticing how the scenery has changed from the low-rise brick buildings of Upper Manhattan to the glossy glass skyrises of Lower Manhattan.

The Wall Street bull with a line of people.

13. The Charging Bull

You’ll walk right past the Wall Street bull, but at this point, you’re probably not going to want to stop for a photo because you’re so close! Maybe just walking past it will provide some luck to finish the course.

A view of the Statue of Liberty from Battery Park.

14. The Battery and Statue of Liberty Viewpoint

Once you see Lady Liberty, you know you’ve made it. Congratulations! Now, snap a sweaty selfie, treat yourself to a cab back home, get some rest, and revel in the accomplishment and fun of the journey.

Colorful street art reading "spread love" and "do the right thing."

A few more tips

  • Check the weather before you go to make sure you'll be comfortable on the journey.
  • Pack light.  Bring a small bag (ideally something hands-free, like a belt bag) for just the essentials. For me, the essentials included my phone, a portable phone charger, a small wallet, and a water bottle I strapped onto the bag.
  • Start in the morning , so you have time for a lunch break and can wrap up before dinnertime. How long the walk takes will, of course, depend on your speed and how long you take for breaks. My journey ended up at about 5 hours, 30 minutes including a few short stops.
  • Immerse yourself in the sounds of the city. While I’m usually listening to a podcast or music while I walk, on this journey, I left my AirPods in their case and opted for the sounds of people raking leaves in a park, Beyonce’s “Break My Soul” blaring from a passing car, and overheard bits of conversation.
  • Take plenty of breaks , but don’t take off your shoes on those breaks or you’ll never want to lace them up again.
  • Plan your walk strategically on a day when you don’t have many other errands to run or other walking to do. I neglected to do this and ended up accidentally walking 25 miles in total on the day of my trek—oops.
  • Just keep walking: When it gets hard—and it will—I repeated “just keep walking” in my mind, a remix of the Finding Nemo “just keep swimming” advice.
  • Be open to surprises. I saw some impressive art, ate some delicious food, and helped a few other travelers navigate their journey. I also saw a person gently cradling an actual reptile in line at the bakery and later saw another person skillfully feeding dozens of pigeons in Central Park. Ah, New York. You never know what you’ll find, and that’s exactly what makes this bucket list trek such a gem.

BROAD CITY FILMING LOCATIONS

a group of people standing in front of a tall building in a city

Hop aboard the  NYC TV & Movie Tour  and the  Central Park TV & Movie Sites Tour  to see locations from TV shows like  Broad City  on Comedy Central.

Broad City was created by Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson. It started as a web series, which ran from 2009 to 2011, and ran for five seasons from 2014 to 2019 on Comedy Central. The series is based on Glazer and Jacobson’s real life friendship and their attempt to make it in New York City.

The series follows friends Ilana and Abbi, fictionalized versions of themselves but still two Jewish Americans in their twenties. Their life is full of crazy adventures about their spontaneous lives in NYC on a budget. Ilana is lazy and always looks for an opportunity to skip work at her sales company, following a hedonistic lifestyle. Abbi is a bit different and tries to make it as an illustrator while working at a gym on the side. However, most of the time she gets tangled up in strange things Ilana is doing.

In the series, there are a few cast members that keep on returning in the lives of Ilana and Abbi. One of them is the boyfriend of Abbi’s (never seen) roommate Melody, Matt Bevers (John Gemberling), who is always in Abbi’s apartment in Queens and practically lives there for free, eating her food and always on the couch. This results in hilarious moments between Abbi and Bevers.

Across the hall lives Jeremy Santos (Stephen Schneider), an attractive man who Abbi has a crush on for most of the series. Everytime Jeremy gets close to Abbi, she gets nervous and doesn’t know what to say.

Abbi works at Soulstice, a parody of gyms like SoulCycle and Equinox, and her boss Trey Pucker (Paul W. Downs)  is a nice guy, who is a hardcore health and fitness enthusiast. Most of the series he has Abbi clean things in the gym and doesn’t let her become a fitness instructor, oblivious to her feelings. In season 3 Abbi and Trey start dating and Abbi tries to keep this a secret from Ilana.

Lincoln Rice (Hannibal Buress), a successful pediatric dentist has a friends-with-benefits relationship with Ilana. Lincoln wants more from their relationship, but Ilana has commitment issues. He is a nice and easy going guy, who is also friends with Abbi.

There are multiple locations that the characters frequent throughout the series. Madison Square Park is used for different occasions throughout the five seasons, one as Ilana tries to scrounge up money to go to a Lil Wayne concert on the steps of the Admiral David Glasgow Farragut statue by trying her hand at bucket drumming. This is also where Lincoln calls it quits with Ilana later in the series.

Soulstice in the show is actually Chalk Gyms in real life, where Abbi works (er, cleans everything). From puke to pubic hair, it can get messy. The gym is located on North 9th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

When Abbi has to pick up a package at the pickup point from UPS, she has to go North Brother Island. The trip to the inaccessible island is hilarious, as the island doesn’t exist in real life. Everyone who has ever been to Maspeth, the actual location of the UPS hub, understands the irritation and frustration to get there. When Abbi arrives on the island, the only way to pick up the package is when you have a proper ID and you can only pick it up between 12pm – 2:15pm.

When Ilana wants to have a new look, she goes to The Pleasure Chest, together with her brother Eliot (Eliot Glazer, Ilana’s real life brother), to try something a little more seductive. The Pleasure Chest is a chain, but the girls visit the one in the West Village (which is also a stop on the Sex and the City Hotspots Tour !)

When the girls are on their way to a wedding outside NYC, they have to take public transit to get there. They first arrive at Grand Central Terminal , only to realize their train tickets actually leave from Penn Station across town.

Abbi and Ilana walk pass Gramercy Park and dream about going in the private park, but they have no key to get in. One of the rich nearby residents starts to choke on a sandwich, and the girls must comedically give him the Heimlich maneuver through the fence. After the man still doesn’t let Abbi and Ilana in the park, they walk away as he starts choking a second time. Gramercy Park can be found between Park Ave and 3rd ave on 21st street and is Jessica Jones ’ neighborhood in the popular Netflix series. You can stop at this park on The Super Tour of NYC .

In Season 2, you can see Abbi and Ilana hanging out at the fountain in Washington Square Park. Washington Square Park and other sites from Broad City can be seen in our NYC TV and Movie Tour.

Another popular hangout for the girls is the biggest park in Manhattan, Central Park . See sites where Abbi and Ilana visit, like Bethesda Terrace, on the Central Park TV & Movie Sites Tour.

There is even a mobile game based on the series, named: Broad City: High Score !

Broad City  has been nominated twice for Best Comedy Series at the Critics Choice Awards, with Ilana Glazer also being nominated twice for her role. In addition, both girls shared a nomination in 2017 for Best Comedic Performance at the MTV Movie & TV Awards.

Pay homage to Abbi and Ilana with Salon's comprehensive "Broad City" walking tour

From prospect park's "dog wedding gazebo" to st. marks to beacon's closet, these are the spots you need to know, by anna silman.

There’s a “Sex and the City” tour and a "Seinfeld Tour" -- heck, there's even a "Girls" tour — so why not a tour inspired by our newest NYC-centric pop culture obsession, “Broad City"? Recently, we wrote about all the ways you know you live in Abbi and Ilana’s New York. But what about visitors to the city looking for something slightly more authentic than the traditional New York sightseeing trip?  We can help. Here’s our (semi) comprehensive guide to the city, inspired by Abbi and Ilana's awesome adventures:

Catch some rays in Washington Square Park Start your day in Washington Square Park, in the heart of NYU between the West and East Village. Great place to people-watch, smoke a joint, and search out unsuspecting NYU students should you want to steal their air-conditioning units.

Pick up a latte at Grounded Coffee 28 Jane St. This coffeeshop is the "Jane’s Sandwich Shop" where Abbi hosted her art exhibit. They have great honey nut lattes (so we hear).

Grab drinks at Swine 531 Hudson St. A West Village watering hole that’s good for a casual pint or a glass of wine after work. Also: The bar where Abbi lost her phone.

Go for dessert at Magnolia Bakery 401 Bleecker St. A great spot for banana pudding — also, for hunting down unsuspecting tourists who may or may not have picked up items belonging to you.

Have a late night cocktail at the Back Room speakeasy 102 Norfolk St. All the drinks are served in teacups at this Lower East Side speakeasy, where -- if you're lucky -- you might catch Abbi transform into her cabaret-singing, plucked-from-the-1930s alter ego, Val.

Go topless tanning in Sheep’s Meadow 65th St Transverse, Central Park Seriously, feel free to strip down! Everyone else is.

People-watch on the Upper East Side 59th to 96th st., between the park and the river Abbi and Ilana deem it "a horrible, vapid wasteland," but its denizens are a reliable source of sociological fascination (look out for old women in silk neckties talking about their horses).

Grab some sushi in Penn Station 2 Penn Plz, New York, NY 1012 Abbi and Ilana's mythical sushi place under Penn Station does not exist, as far as we know. However, there is a place called Penn Sushi in the station where we're told you can pick up a decent California Roll (this is not an endorsement, just a suggestion).

Times Square W. 42nd st. to W. 47th st  Don’t spend more than a few seconds here, if you can avoid it.

Buy some home goods at Bed, Bath and Beyond 620 Sixth Ave The flagship store on Sixth Avenue has everything you could possibly need. It is also Abbi's happy place. Bonus points if you can find a sales associate to do a secret handskake with you.

Take a boat trip to see the Statue of Liberty Pier 8, W. 42nd Street & 12th Ave If you don't have a friend who works at a fancy law office, hop on the Circle Line's "Liberty Tour," which leaves from Pier 8 every day at 10am.

Go consignment shopping at Beacon’s Closet 74 Guernsey St., Brooklyn, NY The extremely popular consignment store can be a great place to pay off any unexpected broken-mirror debts. Beware sassy salesgirls.

Go for a spin at Chalk Gyms 193 N 9th St., Brooklyn While “Soulstice” isn’t a real chain, sadly (although it’s obviously inspired by the many SoulCycles dotting the city), you can still visit Abbi and Trey's place of work by hitting up Williamsburg's Chalk Gyms.

Grab a lunch to go at the Gowanus Whole Foods 214 3rd St., Brooklyn This is where Abbi hallucinates on pain meds and spends $1,487.56 on artisanal produce after getting her wisdom teeth out — it was also a controversial addition to the Gowanus neighborhood, with residents seeing it as a harbringer of gentrification (suffice to say, there are quite a few locals who wouldn’t mind if you pulled an Abbi and trashed the place).

Grab some after-dinner froyo at 16 Handles 139 N 7th St., Brooklyn "42 Squirts" doesn’t exist, so you’ll have to go to the (slightly) less overhwelming fro-yo place where this was filmed — the Williamsburg 16 Handles — in order to try and craft the essence of Abbi. It is not easy.

Go rollerblading in Prospect Park As far as we know, there is no designated "Dog Wedding Gazebo," but if you get high enough, who knows what you'll find.

Take a day trip to North Brother island As far as we know, there is no designated place to pick up a package on this small island between the Bronx and Rikers. It is, however, an uninhabited bird sanctuary that used to house a smallpox hospital. Enjoy!

Broadway Walking Tours with New York Broadway Tours

Our actor tour guides SING New York City’s history to life, from the South Street Seaport to the East Village to Greenwich Village,Times Square and more! Get those JAZZ hands ready.

?I searched around for a Broadway tour because I basically came to NYC for the theater and I figured it would be a good investment! Amada, the tour guide, is wonderful and so sweet. She has the same enthusiasm as I do about theatre! In saying that, I did find that I knew a lot about what she was teaching us about already. For the average NYC tourist, this would be a perfect tour about the basics of NYC theatre!! Amada takes you on a route that somehow avoids most of the hectic crowds so kudos to her! Do keep in mind that you do not go into any theaters, but you do get to see plenty of them. Go support New York Broadway Tours?and the wonderful Amada!? – Maddie O

?A friend and I took the tour on a Sunday. Amada was on time, really knows what she is talking about, provided a wealth of information that we didn?t know (and we live here!). Interestingly enough, there were only the 2 of us so we really got to ask about everything we wanted to know! There were supposed to be others on the tour and she did wait some minutes and call/text them rather than just take off without them. I think this shows her professionalism and wanting to make sure that people weren?t left behind. She made the tour fun, despite the oppressive heat, and encourages people to have ?jazz hands?, sing along, etc. Not to mention that she has a great voice! I recommend taking the tour- don?t think you?ll be disappointed!? – Sonia

Abbi’s birthday walk on Broad City is totally doable (if you have the right shoes)

By erin qualey | jan 24, 2019.

Broad City Season 5 premiere via Comedy Central Press

Stroll through Manhattan like a Broad City kween by following the stops on Abbi’s 30th birthday tour. We’ve got all the deets you need here.

As the final season of Broad City begins, Ilana (Ilana Glazer) and Abbi (Abbi Jacobson) take us along on a very personal jaunt. It’s Abbi’s 30th birthday, bbs! And, thanks to the modern miracle of constant streaming technology, we’re all on hand to share in the partay.

The celebration focuses on traveling from the “tippity top to the tippity bottom” of the island of Manhattan. Wait. Hold up. Record scratch. That’s a thing you can do?! Sweeeeeet! Brb, doing it rnnnnnn.

Just kidding. But only kinda. This episode definitely made me want to explore more about this whole NYC walk dealio. First off, it’s definitely something that people do. A quick search for “walk the length of Manhattan” yielded more search results than I could possibly peruse. What I learned though is that Broadway traverses the literal entirety of the island. From 225th Street in the Inwood neighborhood to Battery Park, the length of the street is 13.3 miles, and it paves a relatively safe path from point A to B. Phew. That’s a lot of walking. Good news, though, if you do it from north to south, you avoid the hills. Less stress on your precious toosh makes for a more leisurely walk fo sho.

However, upon close inspection of the episode, the girls don’t actually walk the entirety of the island. They hop a few subway trains along the way. No biggie. The actual walk can take anywhere from 7 – 12 hours, so getting this bish done before sunset definitely involves some subway ride-age.

So, if you want to do this thing up, Abbi and Ilana style, here’s how to follow in their footsteps.

First, take the 1 train alllll the way up to 215th Street. If you’re a purist, you’re gonna have to walk up 5 blocks to the tippity top of Manhattan at 220th, but no one will know but you if you decide against this step. Then, head to the Morris Jumel Mansion.

Morris Jumel Mansion – 65 Jumel Terrace

What?! I never knew that gorge mansion was in the city either! Thanks to Broad City, this landmark will certainly be getting an increase in foot traffic over the next few months. Check out the history behind the mansion in the link above.

Red Rooster – 310 Lenox Ave

Mmmmm. Ilana and Abbi sample high end chicken and waffles and all sorts of other goodies from celebrity chef Marcuss Samuelson’s flagship restaurant. Truly the breakfast of champions.

Hair Braiding – 223 West 125th Street-ish

Soooo I got this address by Googling some of the nearby storefronts visible when Ilana decides to stop and get her hair braided. If braids aren’t your thang, just check out some of the sweet street side vendors in the area instead.

According to their map, the girls then appear to take the subway from 116th St all the way down to 34th. Good call, ladies. Skipping the touristy middle of Broadway is always a good idea for locals. But Ilana celebrates a bit too early by dancing towards their next stop and ends up tumbling down a (wo)manhole in her new Phillip Lims.

This oopsie necessitates a visit to a nearby pharmacy for medical supplies and a side trip to the mall for supportive footwear…

Midtown Mall – 100 West 33rd Street

If you do stop at the mall, ask for Gene at the shoe store. He’s the best. Also, try to avoid getting security called on you for snuggling with strange children. Moral of the story: Don’t kiss children you don’t know.

(P.S. The mall featured in this episode isn’t actually the midtown mall – it’s actually Queens Center in Queens (kweens?)- but we wouldn’t want to throw you off your game, so for our purposes, this is the correct stop on the itinerary.)

Broad City

Russ and Daughters Cafe – 127 Orchard Street

The girls meet up with Jaime, Jaime’s new bf, and Lincoln at this historic cafe in the village. Birthday bagels and butts. Best brunch ever.

East River Park – 748 East River Drive

After parting ways with the guys, the girls hoof it to a scenic park on the East side of the island. Overlooking the dual Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges, the friends contemplate life and the Titanic… before spinning Ilana’s phone into the water. Oops. Near, far, wherever you are, don’t try this at home, kids.

The Trump Building – 40 Wall Street

The walk continues with a brief rage-fueled stop at the Trump Building on Wall Street. It’s a good thing Abbi has her phone to document the day because a sweet filter allows Abbi’s middle fingers of fury to reach electrified superhero status. The shero we truly deserve.

Battery Park – aka: The Tippity Bottom

After a full day of New York City madness, the girls reach the tippity bottom of Manhattan. Woot! And this whole Manhattan walkabout brings a whole new meaning to the words broad city. Abbi and Ilana might be leaving us, but the amazing streets of NYC will always be there for us.

Walking Tour: Kitai Gorod

Kitai Gorod, with its twisting and winding streets, is the oldest section of Moscow outside the Kremlin. The literal translation of Kitai Gorod is "Chinatown," but there has never been a Chinese settlement here. The origin of the word kitai is disputed; it may come from the Tatar word for fortress, but most likely it derives from the Russian word kita, in reference to the bundles of twigs that were used to reinforce the earthen wall that once surrounded the area.

Kitai Gorod begins where Red Square ends. Settlement of this area began in the 12th century, around the time that the fortified city of Moscow was founded on Borovitsky Hill (the site of the present-day Kremlin). By the 14th century Kitai Gorod was a thriving trade district, full of shops and markets. At that time it was surrounded by earthen ramparts, which were replaced in the 16th century by a fortified wall, remnants of which still remain. As Moscow grew, so did Kitai Gorod.

At the time of the Bolshevik Revolution it was the city's most important financial and commercial district, with major banks, warehouses, and trading companies concentrated here. These days the multitude of shops, restaurants, and banks demonstrates the area's reasserted role as an energized commercial center.

A good starting point for your tour is Nikolskaya ulitsa, which begins at the corner opposite the Historical Museum and runs along the north side of GUM. If you are coming from St. Basil's, walk away from St. Basil's toward the Historical Museum alongside GUM. If you are coming from outside of Red Square, get to Nikolskaya by way of Teatralnaya Ploshchad (Theater Square). If you are standing with your back to the Bolshoi on this square, walk straight ahead, cross the street, and enter one of the narrow passageways to the right or left of the Teatralnaya metro station (as you are facing it). Taking a right out of either passageway will bring you to Nikolskaya ulitsa. Go a short way farther to the right, to the cobblestone edge of Red Square, to begin your walk.

Nikolskaya ulitsa, which is named after the Kremlin's Nikolskaya Gate Tower, is one of the oldest streets in Moscow. At the corner with Red Square is the Kazansky Sobor . Leaving the church, take a left to make your way through the teeming crowds of shoppers on Nikolskaya ulitsa to No. 7, the Zaikonospassky Monastyr , the former Slavonic-Greco-Latin Academy now undergoing a slow restoration. Farther down the street, also on the left-hand side, is a once brightly painted white-and-aqua building with an elaborate facade (No. 15). The building was erected in 1810-14 on the site of the 16th-century Pechatny Dvor (Printing Yard), where Russia's first printed book was assembled in 1553. Today the building houses the Moscow Institute of Historical Records and the Moscow Humanitarian University. Cross the street to go down Bogoyavlensky pereulok. Halfway down the block, opposite the entrance to the Ploshchad Revolutsii metro, is the Bogoyavlensky Sobor . Continue down the street to where it intersects with ulitsa Ilinka. Before the 1917 revolution this was Moscow's Wall Street, and it is still lined with the impressive facades of former banks.

On the left-hand corner stands the former Ryabushinsky Bank . As you cross the street, look to your right; ulitsa Ilinka leads directly to the Kremlin's Tower of the Savior. At No. 3 stands the Tserkov Svyatoi Ilii church from which the street takes its name. The church, which dates to 1520, is in disrepair except for its facade. Opposite the church is one of the border streets of the Gostinny Dvor merchant's arcade. Turn left and walk the length of Khrustalny pereulok to reach one of the oldest streets in Moscow, Varvarka ulitsa. The opposite side of the street is lined with quaint old churches and buildings, but the first thing you'll likely notice is the gray bulk of the massive, concrete-and-glass Rossiya, one of Europe's largest and most unattractive hotels.

At the farthest corner of the street, to your right, is the Tserkov Velikomuchenitsy Varvary . Adjacent is the English Court . Next comes the white-stone Tserkov Maksima Blazhennovo . The pointed bell tower situated just before the semicircle sidewalk leading to the upper-level entrance of the Rossiya hotel was once attached to the redbrick Znamensky Sobor on the other side of the sidewalk; with its foundation on the slope below, it is set back from the street. At No. 10 is the Palaty Romanovych v Zaryadye , believed to be the birthplace of Tsar Mikhail Romanov. Before leaving Varvarka ulitsa take note of the last church, the blue Tserkov Georgiya na Pskovskoy Gorke at No. 12.

If you stand to the left of the church (on the walkway leading to the Rossiya hotel) you can glimpse a remnant of Kitai Gorod's 16th-century brick fortification wall. It is to your left, opposite the hotel's eastern facade. Cross to the other side of Varvarka ulitsa and walk a short hop past the final church. Make a right and climb up the narrow Ipatevsky pereulok, which leads to several government and administrative buildings. At the top of the incline to the right is one of Moscow's best-preserved 17th-century churches, the Tserkov Troitsy v Nikitnikach .

Continue down the lane to the right of the church to reach Novaya Ploshchad, or New Square, which is more like a boulevard than a square. To your right, at the far bottom of the hill, Slavyanskaya Ploshchad opens up. At the bottom of the hill is the redbrick Tserkov Vsekh Svyatykh na Kulishkakh . From Novaya Ploshchad stroll for a long block or two past the government buildings, where the Central Committee of the Communist Party once sat. Now these buildings house the Duma of the Moscow Region. Soon you will come to the beginning of a busy intersection. To your right, in the median strip that divides Novaya Ploshchad, is a park that holds the Plevna Memorial, an octagonal, towerlike monument commemorating the Russian soldiers who fell in the Battle of Plevna in the Russo-Turkish War (1878). Keep walking up the street on the left side to go to the Muzey Istorii Goroda Moskvy , a small museum on Moscow's history.

Note the building on the opposite side of the street that takes up the entire block. This is the Politekhnichesky Muzey , a museum of science and technology. Directly north of this museum is yet another museum, Muzey Mayakovskovo , which includes a re-creation of the study of the great revolutionary poet. A short distance from here, Novaya Ploshchad intersects with the circular Lubyanskaya Ploshchad , where you can behold the Lubyanka Prison and the former KGB headquarters, which now house the FSB -- the New Russia's federal security service. On the west side of the square is Detsky Mir, a large department store that used to specialize in toys but now carries all sorts of items.

Walk past Lubyanskaya Ploshchad to the west side, down to where it converges with the broad street of Teatralny proyezd, Moscow's most elite shopping street. On a side street to your right stands the ornate and luxurious Savoy hotel (3 Rozhdestvenka ulitsa), which, like the nearby Metropol hotel, was built in connection with the celebrations in the early 20th century honoring 300 years of the Romanov dynasty. On the left-hand side of the street you will pass a statue of Ivan Fyodorov, the printer who produced Russia's first book at the old Printing Yard on Nikolskaya ulitsa. The arched gateway just to the right of the statue links Teatralny proyezd with Nikolskaya ulitsa, the street on which you started the tour. Teatralny proyezd leads into Teatralnaya Ploshchad, site of three of Moscow's most important theaters.

Taking up the block on the southeast corner, the first building you will encounter to your left as you approach Teatralnaya Ploshchad is the Metropol , an art nouveau hotel. Reaching the square, you will see at the center a large monument to Karl Marx, carved on the spot from a 200-ton block of granite and unveiled in 1961. Across the boulevard stands the Bolshoi Theater , flanked on the left, on the corner farthest away from you, by the Central Children's Theater, and, to the right, by the Maly Theater . Turn left at the corner of the Metropol, and walk by the park and the hotel's main entrance. The large redbrick wall ahead is the other surviving remnant of the 16th-century fortification wall that once surrounded Kitai Gorod.

The wall has been heavily rebuilt, and a new tower has been added. Inside the tower are a couple of restaurants and bars. When you reach the Teatralnaya/Ploshchad Revolutsii metro station, take a moment to admire the exterior of the massive redbrick building on the corner -- the Muzey V. I. Lenina . If you still have some time but not much energy, consider hopping on Trolleybus 2, which can be caught at the bus stop opposite the Bolshoi Theater. The trolley ride takes about 45 minutes and makes a loop passing by Lubyanskaya Ploshchad, Ploshchad Pobedi (Victory Square -- note the obelisk topped by an angel), the Borodino Battle Panorama (in a circular blue pavilion), Kievsky vokzal (train station), the Novy Arbat, and Alexander Garden, before returning to Teatralnaya Ploshchad. You can purchase a ticket for 10R from the driver. Try to have exact change. Make sure to punch the ticket on board the bus.

Taken at a leisurely pace, with stops at least to glance at the interiors of the many churches along the route, this walk should take about five hours. If you intend to take a quick look at the exhibits in the museums along the way, you'll need an entire day. Both the Politekhnichesky Muzey and the Muzey Istorii Goroda Moskvy are worth coming back to for a more leisurely look at their holdings.
