Via Roentgen Building

Striking forms, suspended spaces, natural lighting, materials drawn from the local tradition and adapted to a contemporary style. Located at the corner of Viale Bligny and Via Röntgen, this building is the fruit of a project by Dublin-based Grafton Architects, and in particular is the work of Shelley Mc Namara and Yvonne Farrell. Grafton won the international competition launched by the Milanese university in 2001 for the design and construction of a building with offices for the entire Faculty plus a new auditorium, the Aula Magna. From an architectural point of view, the design hinges on two basic ideas: floating volumes and diffuse natural lighting. The six floors of the Grafton building do not rest on pillars, but are hung by steel cables from large roof beams – a structural principle similar to those used for bridges. The effect is a succession of open spaces, stairs and concrete elements that seem suspended in the air. The visual impact is further lightened by the generous presence of wide glass panels and openings that convey natural light down to the basement. Internal courtyards, hanging gardens and terraces on various levels are full of light, thanks to the absence of pillars, and even the underground levels enjoy natural near-daylight. The 1000-seat Aula Magna is located at the corner of Viale Bligny, a lively urban artery. It is a public place and its accessibility from the busy street underlines the ties between Bocconi and the city. The impressive plate glass wall that visually connects the main foyer and the sidewalk is like a window onto Milan. The broad sidewalk stretches to accompany the visitor into the heart of the building in a virtual overlap of university life and urban life, marked also by the grey color of the surfaces. The outside is clad in the stone known as ceppo, a conglomerate harder than cement and about the same shade that comes from the rivers near Lake Iseo. It is widely used for distinguished buildings around Milan. Similarly, the interior walls alternate exposed cement and grey finishing. The new building houses the offices of the entire Faculty, with its Departments and Research Centers. Its underground levels include, in addition to the new Aula Magna, seminar rooms, a spacious foyer, an exhibition area and parking.

Via Bocconi Residence

With the construction of the Pensionato Bocconi dormitory, designed by architect Giovanni Muzio, the campus began to spread north. On the University Board’s initiative, the building went up in 1956 to offer an accommodation structure for the numerous students arriving from all over Italy. It boasts 5500m2 of space and at present can host 260 students in single rooms. Entirely renovated in 2007, the dormitory also offers a dining hall service open to all students. Other dorms, located off-campus, allow Bocconi students more than 1700 available spots. All bedrooms have a bed, desk and wardrobe and are equipped with a mini-fridge, safe, heating, air-conditioning and Wi-Fi internet. In addition, blankets, sheets, pillowcases and towels are provided. Linens are changed and rooms are cleaned once a week. There is also a coin laundry and common areas for studying, socializing and relaxing in the building. The Bocconi Residence Hall hosts the Media Center, managed entirely by students. It includes Radio Bocconi, a web radio station that animates the days with music, programs and interviews; Tra i Leoni, the newspaper that discusses what’s happening on and off campus; and Bocconi TV, a web TV channel that uses video to tell its stories.

Via Gobbi Building

Inaugurated in 1966, this building was designed by architect Giovanni Muzio and his son Lorenzo. It was constructed along Via Sarfatti in order to make up for the increasing lack of teaching and research space. Connected to the Via Sarfatti building by an underground passage, it originally housed the library, the Aula Magna and several institutes. The library still occupies much of the building’s area today – with its storage space, consultation rooms and offices. The Aula Magna at Via Gobbi 5 can hold 400 people. It mainly hosts conferences and conventions.

Via Sarfatti Building

After the original building on Via Statuto was abandoned due to space problems, the structure on Via Sarfatti was inaugurated on 21 December 1941. Designed by architect Giuseppe Pagano, the building has essential lines, a typical example of Rationalist architecture. The structure is dynamic and opens onto a series of courtyards that allow for access to fresh air and light. Pagano designed all the details of the open design featuring a series of jointed wings, though not all the accents and furnishings have lasted after various renovations throughout the years. One of the original features that is still visible is the building’s main stairway: a "scissor" staircase, it allows two flights of stairs to occupy the same space normally needed for one. Two Neo-Medieval lions in green ceramic, a work of sculptor Arturo Martini, guard the main entrance. Bocconi tradition has it that any student walking between the lions will never graduate! This is why many new graduates celebrate by toasting the lions. The bas-reliefs decorating the facade are by Leone Lodi. The atrium of the campus’s oldest building traditionally hosts contemporary artwork, donated or on loan from artists and art collectors. A piano has also been recently added, courtesy of Furcht Pianoforti: passersby often hear students playing a song for the community! Over the years, annexes have been added, both in height and width, in order to support the ever increasing number of students and professors. It currently holds mostly classrooms for undergraduate and graduate program classes, along with study areas and a few administrative offices. A dining hall and restaurant are located on the basement floor.

Piazza Sraffa Building

Ignazio Gardella’s large building, dating back to 2001, holds 30 classrooms for a total of 4500 spots. Located in the block between Piazza Sraffa and Viale Bligny, it is a 3-floor ellipse with visible brick facing. Due to its unique shape, it has been given the nickname "Velodromo". The classrooms have a trapezoid shape and are placed on the perimeter of the oval, while the central nucleus is open space and covered with a skylight on the ground floor, allowing light to penetrate inside the structure. The hall is graced by contemporary works of art. Classrooms have recently been renovated, allowing for more interactive teaching. "Flat" classrooms provide an innovative study environment and facilitate interaction between faculty members and students, as well as among students for group projects, case discussions, etc. The atrium of the Piazza Sraffa 13 building hosts a statue of Ferdinando Bocconi, the founder of the University: new Bocconi graduates often use this location for a photo shoot with friends and family! Flat classrooms provide an innovative study environment and facilitate interaction between faculty members and students, as well as among students for group projects, case discussions, etc.

The Bocconi campus is located in downtown Milan, a 10-minute walk from the hip Navigli neighborhood. Equipped with modern and avant-garde facilities for studying and teaching, the campus is also the center of student life. A wide range of cultural, athletic and social activities are offered, including several which are organized directly by student associations. The campus connects a diverse group of buildings – each with marked architectural distinctions – that began in 1941, the year in which the main building in Via Sarfatti was inaugurated. None of these buildings were constructed with the sole purpose of creating new spaces for teaching and university life. Each was the work of important architects and intended as an integral part of the city fabric, prompting not only urban change, but also socio-economic change in the surrounding area. The campus is now entirely gathered around its historic main building on Via Sarfatti, after years during which many University services had to be temporarily housed off campus. The Bocconi community has come home again to its roots in the Porta Lodovica neighborhood. The campus continues to undergo expansions: a new student residence hall, a new recreation center and a large park will be completed by 2019. The campus is the urban and architectural manifestation of the University’s cultural vision. It features avant-garde innovation and an international focus that Bocconi shares with its city, Milan, making it an important point of reference and meeting place for people and ideas.

EAA Visiting PhD Scheme at Bocconi University – Post-visit report by Furqan Shah

My visit to Bocconi University through the EAA PhD Scheme was a profoundly enriching experience, providing me with invaluable opportunities to interact with PhD students and faculty members. Interacting with PhD students and faculty over coffee catchups and lunches was a highlight of my stay. These informal gatherings allowed me to discuss my research and gain fresh perspectives and constructive feedback. This interactive environment has certainly enhanced the quality of my research endeavors. I also had the opportunity to attend courses to strengthen my knowledge and familiarity with different fields of accounting research. I attended the courses on Auditing with Annita Florou and Accounting Theory with Moritz Hiemann. These sessions not only deepened my understanding of the subject area but also provided me with practical insights applicable to my own empirical research. Participating in reading groups was another valuable aspect of my visit. Analyzing and critiquing academic papers alongside fellow scholars fostered critical thinking and refined my analytical skills. These discussions offered diverse viewpoints and encouraged me to approach my research from multifaceted angles. During my time at Bocconi, I was fortunate to attend many job-market seminars. Witnessing final-year PhD students from various institutions around the world present their work as potential hires at Bocconi University offered a firsthand glimpse into successful job-market strategies. The seminars equipped me with the necessary insights to navigate the post-PhD job market effectively. A pinnacle moment during my visit was presenting my research at an internal faculty-wide brown-bag seminar. The feedback and suggestions received from the faculty members will undoubtedly enhance the impact of my research, motivating me to refine and strengthen my work further. Outside of academia, I had the opportunity to explore the vibrant culture and rich history of Italy during weekends. Exploring the enchanting streets of Milan and immersing myself in Italian cuisine and art provided a delightful respite from academic pursuits, adding a memorable dimension to my visit. In summary, my time at Bocconi University through the EAA PhD Scheme was a profound blend of academic enlightenment and cultural immersion. The interactions with peers and faculty, coupled with academic engagements and cultural exploration, have indelibly shaped my academic journey, igniting a deeper passion for research and academia. I am grateful for this transformative experience and eager to apply the knowledge and experiences gained to my future endeavors.

In Their Own Words

“Overall, Bocconi has been a great experience. It is a very competitive university. It is situated over 4 buildings in a nice part of Milan. As an exchange student, this is a nice change from the sprawling Stony Brook University. You can’t get too lost once you are there! Students are friendly, but there is a bit of a stigma attached to being an Exchange student. Apparently many exchange students don’t go to class on a regular basis. In fact, the program at Bocconi is so challenging that I have not been traveling as much as I would have liked. I would recommend brushing up on your Italian conversation skills, as English is not that common in Milan. As someone who has only ever lived in America, it is certainly worthwhile to get out of your comfort zone. I am usually the only American, and even the only native English speaker in my groups. It can feel isolating, when students text back and forth in Italian, and you cannot really grasp the conversation. It is a humbling experience, to realize just how large the world really is, and you will experience a whirlwind of emotions!  It is definitely worthwhile, and I would heartily recommend the program!” – Heather, Master of Business Administration Program “Ever since I was a little kid I knew I wanted to study abroad. Being able to study in a different country, meet new people, and experience new cultures all seemed fascinating to me. I am so grateful for everything I have encountered during my study abroad experience in Milan, Italy. Four months in this beautiful, fun-filled city was like a dream and I can’t believe it is almost over. I have made lifelong friends from all over the world in which we will all remember sharing this once in a lifetime opportunity with and all the memories we have made together. Milan has made me grow as a person and really sparked my love for traveling even more. Since my time abroad I have been to 13 different countries and 23 cities and every one of them did not fail to amaze me. Although the language barrier was quite difficult to get used to, I would not change anything about my time in Italy. Studying abroad has taught me so much and it will always have a piece of my heart. Thank you Albany for giving me this wonderful experience!” – Annaliese, Bachelor of Business Administration Program “I am so glad I decided to spend a semester in Milan at Bocconi University. The school has a very competitive atmosphere, so if that appeals to you then this is a great program for you. I found it easier to connect with other exchange students than with Italian students, but Bocconi hosts so many exchange students every year that it is easy to make friends. I loved spending four months in Milan, I thought it was a beautiful city with a lot of history, culture, and great food. In addition, I found that it was easy to travel both to other areas of Italy and other parts of Europe from Milan. I really enjoyed my courses at Bocconi; they gave me a perspective I could not have gotten anywhere else. I took the Italian language course throughout the semester, which I would highly recommend because it will help you as you navigate the city, but it will also introduce you to more exchange students. Overall, I had a great experience in Italy and hope to go back in the future.” Sarah, Master of Public Administration Program

Milan is one of Italy's most vibrant and exciting cities. The streets of the city blend the old - the relics of the former Roman empire - with the new - towering skyscrapers in the city's business district. Traditionally known for its high fashion and art scene, the city has also become one of Europe's most important financial hubs.

Past Student Experiences

  • I think Bocconi and this exchange in general really opened my eyes on so many aspects. It allowed me to take a step back, reflect on what I want for my life and how it is so important for me to position myself within the world instead of focusing and being locked in my mind all the time. It s important that as young, perfectionist and pressured individuals we learn to deal with our stress and anxieties to be able to move forward and learn and grow in all environments.  I learnt a lot also in terms of studies, how to approach exams in a less toxic and stressful way and saw I excelled so much more in that case. I have been able to experience for the first time a second approach to education in university and it showed me that there is so many different ways of approaching the same things, and that it s all about perspective. I believe that this will definitely help me in starting my new and last academic year at LSE with less anxiety pressure and mental pressure. This in turn will help me grow as a person and excel in my academics because I will feel good about myself.  I was also able to secure a 6 month internship in a deep tech startup and that gave me the opportunity of being immersed within the Italian culture to another level. It is something I would have never had the time to do were I in London and yet it contributes so much to my professional growth and development. I learned so much and for once, I really have the time to be fully a part of a company instead of just spending 3 months there. I think this will greatly contribute to my profile attractiveness for future jobs and I am very grateful for that.  Overall, I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything else. I learnt so much and grew on an academic, professional and above all personal level. I would recommend it to anyone who is ready to welcome new ideas, positive and constructive criticism, and who always wanted to have the opportunity to try out new subjects and interests they never allowed themselves to take a look at.  By Violette Lafarge -  CIVICA Exchange (2022/23)
  • My exchange year has given me time to get to know myself. The host institution (Bocconi University) was less academically demanding than LSE so I had time to focus on different projects and aspect of my life – than purely academic. I had the time to reflect on my objectives, goals and re-think my career path. I was able to catch up on independent project – like reading, creative writing and travelling.  From an academic perspective, at Bocconi I was able to choose subjects that I would usually not have the opportunity to study during a Law degree. I broadened my knowledge and interests in topics of history, politics, economics, media and the arts. This was an invaluable opportunity, which largely broadened my general knowledge and awareness.  The extra year gave me time to further develop my career. I had the chance to take on research project with LSE professors, for which I could not find time during the LSE academic year. I also found the space to apply for very competitive vacation schemes for which the application process takes months. I was successful in securing the places I applied for, which was not the case the year before when I had to handle both the LSE academic requirements and the application processes. I was also working part-time which greatly contributed to my CV.  Moreover, I was able to create a lot of friendships with people from different cultures and learn another language. I had more time to dedicate to getting to know other people – the smaller-size of Milan allowed those connections to flow more naturally than in a large city as London. I got to travel a lot with those friends – allowing me to really understand the cultural, social and political background and contexts in Italy. After 4 months, I felt so confident in Italian that in my second term I chose a course in history of music taught solely in Italian, which I was very proud of.   Finally, studying in another educational system and living in another city allowed me to appreciate LSE and London even more. It was a great opportunity to take a year break from those environments, but being away from them made me see why they are special – which made me even more excited to continue studying in the UK next year.    By Natalia Neuber - CIVICA Exchange (2022/23)
  • The most important insight that I can provide to any students considering to go abroad is to open your eyes - it may seem a clichė but so many people claim that they are open-minded but in fact they do not realise that they are still so close-minded to different races, cultures, people, diversity. So many people claim that they know so much about the world because they have travelled there, or lived there for a couple years, but there’s always a new place to explore, new cultures to discover, a new part of yourself to open up. Personally speaking, I found the culture the most enriching part of my study abroad experience, I would even make references to the country I used to study in when something reminds me of it, picking up habits from the locals, because I really did feel integrated into that society even if it was just a couple of months. I was particularly satisfied with the people whom I got to meet as I was part of a programme which integrated a diverse mix of students coming from all around the world. I have grown so much as an individual, I returned to my home school with a multitude of stories to share with my peers, full of love, life and laughter. I kept in contact with my friends I met on exchange and made plans to visit each other,I can confidently say that I have friends all over the world and I feel welcomed to all of these countries! The simplest way I could express my experience is that I learnt to focus on the bigger picture - there are so many opportunities in the world, so many people waiting to meet you, so much to experience, so much that I don’t know, and there is so much I want to learn about in the world. In spite of this, I must admit, the experience was not perfect - nothing is, but what you do gain from it far outweighs the bad stuff. By Hoi Ka Lam - GMIM student (2022/23)
