As someone who has always had a wanderlust spirit, I was thrilled to embark on a world cruise aboard Fred. Olsen’s Borealis. From the moment I stepped onto the ship, I felt a sense of excitement and adventure coursing through my veins.

Boarding and Ship Details

I had a stress-free boarding experience at Liverpool and I was amazed at how efficient the process was. The staff were friendly and helpful, and I was able to get settled into my cabin in no time.

I was also impressed to learn about the ship’s history. The Borealis had spent 23 years sailing as Rotterdam for Holland America Line before being acquired by Fred. Olsen. It was fascinating to think about all the places the ship had been and the stories it must hold.

I couldn’t wait to start my own adventure on this well-traveled vessel.

Cabin and Dining Experience

Gotta say, the main dining room had some seriously delicious vegan options. As a vegan, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the ship catered to my dietary needs. The dinner menu had multiple options for me to choose from, and the large bathroom in the dining room was a nice touch.

Breakfast also had healthy vegan options, which made my mornings stress-free. The crew members were friendly and attentive, always remembering my name and drink preferences. The buffet had a wide selection of food, and the bar prices were reasonable.

One night, there was even a James Bond themed night at the bar, adding some excitement to the dining experience.

Overall, the crew interactions on the Borealis were exceptional. The staff members were always eager to help and make my experience on the ship enjoyable. They were friendly and accommodating, and their attention to detail did not go unnoticed.

From remembering my name to offering me a smoothie after a fitness class, the crew went above and beyond to make me feel at home on the ship.

The dining experience was definitely a highlight of my trip, and I would highly recommend the Borealis to anyone looking for a stress-free and enjoyable cruise experience.

Entertainment and Activities

Fred Olsen’s Borealis – Cabin Reviews and Cabins To Avoid

If you are taking a cruise on Borealis you may be wondering which cabin would suit you best.

Borealis – A New Ship for Fred Olsen – But Not New

Borealis was brought by Fred Olsen from Holland America Line in 2020

Fred Olsen prides itself on being a small, “family-run” cruise line offering “Imaginative and Unusual Itineraries”

Borealis is thought to be named after a previous Fred Olsen-owned ship that sailed in the 1940s. The name of that ship was inspired by the Aurora Borealis

Borealis was one of Four R-Class ships (Or Rotterdam class ships) built between 1997 and 2000 specifically for the Holland America cruise line.

These ships all carry roughly 1,400 passengers.

Borealis was originally named “Rotterdam.” when she was owned by Holland America Line. Fred Olsen also bought her sister ship “Amsterdam” and renamed her the “Bolette” at the same time.

It is a little confusing that Holland America uses the same ship names over and over again – They now have a new ship called “Rotterdam” that was launched in October 2020.

Inside Cabins – Borealis Review

Inside Cabins normally sleep two people and are around 183 sq feet. Some rooms can accommodate 4 guests. These inside cabins are normally the cheapest cabins available.

There are 135 inside cabins onboard.

Cabins normally have twin beds, which can easily be converted into a double, depending on your needs. 

Just speak to your cabin steward if you want the bed configuration changed -they are always happy to help.

There are cabins available that accommodate four passengers

If you are planning to have more than two people in the cabin, there are cabins available that have Pullman beds that can be pulled down from the ceiling.

Others have a large sofa bed that can be made up in the evenings.

What I Like About The Inside Cabin s:

• They are a good size for an inside cabin
• They have a good amount of storage space and drawers within the main cabin area
• They have a good-sized, tiled bathroom
• They are well maintained – even though the ship is over 30 years old.

What I Don’t like: 

• The older style of traditional cruise ship décor.  Lots of wood and beige. Personal choice of course, but I prefer the décor of more modern ships like those of the  MSC  fleet or the newer Royal Caribbean ships. 

I am a big fan of inside cabins, as it saves money that can be spent on drinks, excursions, speciality dining – or another cruise!

One problem people mention is that it is easy to sleep – and sleep – and sleep in an inside cabin. There is no daylight to wake you up.

Outside Cabins – Borealis Review

The outside cabins on Borealis are almost identical to the inside cabins in style and design.

The average size is slightly bigger, at 215 sq ft. They can also sleep up to four people, with some cabins having pull-down “Pullman” beds or sofa beds.

There are 385 ocean-view cabins onboard.

They have either a porthole or a bigger, square window, depending on which deck you are on. 

Oceanview cabins are the next step up to an inside cabin. They are a good choice if you think you would miss having daylight in your room.

It is a cheaper option than a balcony suite cabin but still gives you views of the ocean – albeit with no actual outside space.

What I Like About The Oceanview Cabin s:

• The amount of storage space and drawers within the main cabin itself.
• A good-sized, tiled bathroom with a bath and shower over.
• Even though the ship is over 30 years old, it is very well maintained throughout.
• Bright light and airy.
• The older style of traditional cruise ship décor. Lots of wood and beige. Personal choice of course, but I prefer the décor of more modern ships like those of the  MSC  fleet or the newer Royal Caribbean ships. 

Balcony Suite Cabins – Bolette Review

Fred Olsen doesn’t offer standard “balcony” cabins as you would find on many other cruise ships.

“Balcony” cabins are known as “Balcony Suites” .

There are 120 of these balcony suites onboard.

I stayed in a balcony suite on Borealis’s sister ship Bolette, and it was very comfortable.

A standard balcony suite cabin is around 235 sq ft. Some balcony cabins can accommodate four guests with one bed coming down from the ceiling and a sofa bed.

There were two of us travelling and we had the room set up with just one double bed.

W hat I Like About Balcony Suite Cabins On Borealis

• The storage space and drawers within the main cabin itself.
• Good choice of TV and Movies to watch.
• An actual bath, with a shower over it in the bathroom.

What I Don’t Love About Balcony Suite Cabins on Borealis

• The older style of traditional cruise ship décor. Lots of wood and beige. Personal choice of course, but I prefer the décor of more modern ships like those of the  MSC  fleet or the newer Royal Caribbean ships. This ship is over 30 years old but is maintained very well.
• No USB plugs or sockets by the beds. Again, this is down to the age of the ship, and there are plenty of plug sockets in the desk area.
• Smoking on the balconies! I don’t smoke, but if you did you can here – and an ashtray is provided!

Only four cruise lines allow you to smoke on your cabin balcony, Fred Olsen is one of them!

Terrace Cabins – Borealis Review

Borealis has 7 “Terrace Cabins”, with a room size: of approximately 220 sq ft.

This is smaller than the balcony suite cabin I stayed in on Borealis’s sister ship, Bolette .

These unusual Terrace Cabins have sliding patio doors straight out onto the promenade deck .

They have a double bed which can be converted to singles and all the other cabin features you would expect.

The sliding patio doors in Terrace Cabins are like one-way mirrors – you can see everyone walking past on the promenade deck, but luckily they can’t see into your room !

I think it is nice that you can go straight out onto the promenade deck if you want to. You have plenty of daylight, but no private outside space.

I recently cruised on P&O’s Iona and had a Conservatory Mini Suite cabin. We had a balcony area that opened out onto the Promenade deck – but you couldn’t actually get out there because of the balcony railings.

Borealis Suites

There is a range of different suites that you can book on Borealis

The size of these suites varies a great deal, with the largest, the Owner’s Suite, being a massive 940 Square feet!

A “Premier Suite” is smaller – but is still a very acceptable 575 Square feet!

I have never stayed in a large suite on a cruise ship, although I have been lucky enough to be invited to look at the suites of friends who have!

Do Fred Olsen Cruises Provide Bathrobes?

Fred Olsen provides bathrobes in suite cabins if you are sailing for three or more nights.

“Bathrobes are also available for use in other cabin grades, subject to availability. A refundable deposit is required and a charge is made to cover laundry costs.” Fred Oslen Cruise lines

So if you want a bathrobe and it isn’t automatically provided, speak to your room steward.

Do The Cabins on Borealis have TVs?

All cabins on the Borealis come with TVs. There is a flat-screen TV that is wall mounted. It can be moved easily so that you always had a good view wherever you sit.

They have a good range of films and box sets and a selection of news channels.

Unlike many cruise lines, Fred Olsen doesn’t have lots of TV channels in many different languages, but there are still plenty of channel choices!

Do The Cabins on Borealis have Kettles?

All the cabins on Borealis came with a kettle and some tea/coffee-making facilities.

If there aren’t the tea bags that you’d like, feel free to take some from the buffet back to your room, I always do!

Do The Cabins on Borealis have Safes?

All cabins on Borealis have safes. They are quite small and can be found on one of the shelves in the wardrobe/closet area outside the bathroom.

Cabins to Avoid – Borealis

If you suffer from motion sickness, I would avoid a cabin right at the front or right at the back of the ship.

I do get seasick and unfortunately did feel a little unwell on my cruise on Borealis’s sister ship Bolette. This was probably due to a number of things:

• The Itinerary – it was a winter cruise, we sailed in March 2023
• The destination – going across the North Sea in the winter months can be rough.
• The size of the ship – Borealis and Bolette are quite small. Although they do have stabilizers (retrofitted in 2022) Bolette seemed to move more than some other ships I have sailed on.

Deck 3 Terrace Cabins

I don’t think I would book a Terrace cabin, as I think I might find it distracting with people walking by outside whilst I am trying to relax – even if they can’t see into the cabin itself.

There are lots of people who love these cabins though.

Deck 3 and 5 Forward

If you are somebody who likes to go to sleep early and needs it to be quiet I would recommend avoiding the cabins at the front of decks 3 and 6. These are above and below the theatre.

The late theatre shows usually start at around 10:30 so the noise could be happening until around 11:30.

If you have mobility issues, I wouldn’t book a cabin on the ship’s lower decks. There are actually passenger cabins right down on deck 1 on Borealis! It’s a long walk to dinner or the theatre…

If you want to go up to the top deck (deck 9) it is a lot of stairs! The lifts/elevators may often be busy due to the older passenger demographic on Fred Olsen Cruises. Fewer guests may be able to walk up multiple sets of stairs.

Should You Book a Guaranteed Cabin?

I normally would choose a “guaranteed cabin” to save money and let the cruise line pick the cabin location. 

I didn’t pick my cabin location when I sailed on Borealis’s sister ship, Bolette. I think I was very fortunate to get a mid-ship cabin on that occasion. I am sure my seasickness would have been even worse if I was right at the front or the back of the ship!

Booking a “guaranteed” cabin is a good option for me. I am perfectly happy and able to walk great distances, and nothing much disturbs my sleep – so cabin location isn’t usually a high priority for me.

Would I Recommend These Cabins?

I would definitely recommend the cabins onboard Borealis. I have travelled on Borealis’s sister ship Bolette, which is nearly identical. The ship felt as though it had been well looked after and our cabin was spacious, always spotlessly clean and very comfortable.

We had a wonderful trip on Fred Olsen’s Bolette! I would like to book a trip on her sister ship Borealis if ever I get that opportunity!

It was lovely to get a taste of traditional, small-ship cruising. Fred Olsen has some wonderful itineraries and the staff were really friendly and helpful.

I often cruise on larger, less traditional ships so it made a nice change to try something different !

Borealis’ tastefully decorated and spacious two-tiered main restaurants are the focal points of dining on board. Enjoy delicious five-course, á la carte menus of expertly created dishes, prepared and cooked by our team of talented chefs and served to you by our dedicated, attentive waiters. The Arctic Room

Designed to mirror the Indian Ocean Room, the Arctic Room leads into the main Aurora Restaurant. Beautifully decorated with shades of blue and grey to reflect the nature of the Arctic, it’s adorned with Fred. Olsen’s hand-selected artwork collection by Keith Grant, and is the ideal room for intimate meals as well as hosted breakfasts and lunches with our specialist speakers.

The View buffet restaurant has a welcoming feel and beautiful views of the ocean provided by its large windows, and is the perfect venue for relaxed, buffet-style dining for those who feel they would prefer a more relaxed dining experience. Offering all kinds of delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner options, plus a tasty selection of complimentary afternoon teas with sandwiches, scones and tempting cakes, all baked on board. Treats of the Region dishes are also available, which are local to the destinations you are visiting, so there’s plenty of opportunities to sample something new.

The Poolside

The Poolside Café provides you with the perfect al fresco dining experience to enjoy during your days on board. Enjoy a leisurely late breakfast or a selection of temptingly delicious light bites until 7pm. Depending on the weather conditions, our retractable roof will be open or closed, meaning you can dine there at any time of the year; or on selected sunny days on your cruise, lunch may be an appetising barbecue cooked by our chefs as you relax and enjoy the cocktail or mocktail of the day with friends at the Lido Bar.

Vasco is our speciality Goan restaurant serving a deliciously fresh and modern take on Indian food. Named after the Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama - the first European to reach India by sea; the menu has been inspired by our very own chefs from Goa and focuses on their unique culinary traditions, a place where the tastes of Europe first met the tropical warmth and spices of western India. All of our suites and cabins have tea and coffee making facilities as standard, so you can enjoy a much needed tea or coffee first thing, or a relaxing drink at the end of the day. For those times when you’d like to enjoy something more, you can also order room service light bites up until 11pm every day. Continental breakfast can be ordered in advance for delivery at your preferred time, while snacks are available from 10am onwards. Should you prefer not to head to the restaurants, shorter length lunch and dinner menus are also available.

How many formal and theme nights are there on my cruise.

The number of formal nights you can expect on a cruise depends on the duration of your cruise.

The exact number, including any theme nights, will be advised on your cruise ticket. The table below provides a rough guide to the number of formal nights you can expect to enjoy on your cruise.

Please refer to your booking within My Cruises for full information on the number of formal and specific theme nights on your cruise. Our theme nights are entirely optional, but the majority of our guests choose to participate.

Food & Drink

Do your cruises cater for guests with specific dietary requirements.

On board all of our ships, we do our best to accommodate most dietary requests. So, vegetarian, vegan, low fat, low cholesterol, low salt, dairy-free, lactose-free, wheat-free and gluten-free food are all catered for.

We also kindly request that you make us aware of any special dietary requests at the time of booking or by calling our Guest Services Team on 0800 0355 145 . We’ll do our best to source exact products, or provide certain foods, such as diabetic desserts. Guests with food allergies or intolerances will also have the opportunity to speak to the Maitre ’d or Executive Chef once on board to discuss any requirements. 

We can also provide a vegan option for our Traditional Afternoon Tea service, which is available on all sea days. Prices can be found on the link below.

Please note that we may not be able to source specific brands given our location or the availability at local ports. 

What are the dining times / restaurant opening hours?

Our on board restaurants provide a wide range of delicious and freshly cooked meals, so we offer a selection of dining options throughout the day to suit you.

Breakfast :

Normally served between 7.30 and 10.30am in the main restaurants and casual dining venues.

Normally served between 12.00 and 2.00pm in the main restaurants and casual dining venues.

Afternoon Tea:

Each day, complimentary afternoon tea is served between 3.45 and 4.45pm in the buffet service restaurant, with sandwiches, savouries, scones and cakes, along with fresh tea and coffee.*

*Please note this is not the Tradtional Premium Afternoon Tea service, which is available on selected days in the Observatory for just £13 per person.

Please request either the first or second seating (6.15pm or 8.30pm) when you make your booking. You can also request your preferred table, but we can’t always guarantee this.

Your restaurant seating card will be in your room when you board, which confirms your table number and dining time. This will be your allocated table for the duration of your cruise.

Please note that evening dining times may vary on our One Night Cruises. 

Casual Dining:

A buffet-style breakfast, lunch and dinner will also be served in the Palms Café ( Balmoral) The View and The Poolside ( Bolette and Borealis ). 

For those guests requiring a more casual dinner option, The View and Palms Cafés will be open from 6.30pm to 9.00pm. Dining at the Poolside ( Bolette and Borealis ) is available throughout the day between 10.00am and 7.00pm.

On some nights, we have themed dining evenings in the buffet restaurants. These evenings are often very popular so we recommend you book in advance to secure a table.

Speciality Dining: 

For an even more indulgent and memorable dining experience, each ship in the Fred. Olsen fleet offers speciality dining in an exclusive venue. Vasco  and  Colours & Tastes take inspiration from traditional Indian cuisine and modern Asian Fusion dining.

Our speciality dining venues are open from 6pm on the days advertised in The Daily Times. 

You can pre-book speciality dining via My Cruises from 13 weeks and up to 24 hours before departure, for £10pp. If you'd like to book once on board, speciality dining will be charged to your on board account at £15pp. 

What style of dining should I expect on board?

Each of our ships feature a selection of stylish dining venues, all serving a range of indulgent, expertly-prepared dishes. At breakfast, lunch and dinner, you’ll always find delicious treats which will tempt your taste buds. And, as all food is included on your cruise, you can indulge as much or as little as you like.

Start the day with eggs made to order; a hearty full English, or a lighter breakfast from the buffet if you prefer. Lunchtime offers a select á la carte menu alongside a tempting buffet for you to indulge in up to three courses.

Experience evening dining just how it should be in the spacious restaurants on board, serving up a sumptuous five-course á la carte menu each evening. You can request a table size at the time you make your booking, although this cannot be guaranteed.

Alternatively you can opt to dine in our self-service restaurant on each vessel, for a more relaxed experience.

As each evening winds down, our buffet restaurants open for late-night snacks if you’re still feeling peckish. Of course, you can also order room service up until 11pm every day.

While the main restaurants are always popular, during your cruise you may be tempted to try something different for an evening or two. When you’re in the mood for something extra special, each ship in our fleet features speciality dining (a small supplement applies). Our Colours & Tastes or Vasco menus offer delicious Asian fusion or Indian cuisines.

How much do drinks cost?

Unlike some other cruise lines, we don't charge a small fortune at the bar. We want you to relax and enjoy your holiday, and we know that many of you prefer to have a drink in your hand while making the most of your time away.

You shouldn't have to worry about the cost of enjoying yourself, which is why we always ensure that our drinks are reasonably priced. For example, a glass of house white costs just £6 and a pint of lager is £5, while a gin & tonic is around £5 (depending on the brand of gin)*.

If coffee is your tipple, take a seat in the Bookmark Cafe and enjoy a delicious cup of your favourite hot drink, or stop by and grab one to take away, using your reusable cup.

The Earth Room

New for 2023, Borealis’ Earth Room is a peaceful lounge, designed to inspire and ignite a passion to find out more about the world we live in and how we can lessen our impact on the environment. 

Here, you will find a hand-selected range of around 350 rare books, by eminent writers – chosen by Fred. Olsen, along with podcasts and videos to watch on the iPads provided. These resources, and occasional guest speakers, are particularly focused on sharing ways that we can all make small changes in our lives to positively impact climate change. 

The Botanical Room

Along with the Earth Room, the Botanical Room has been brought to life in 2023. Designed with our green-fingered guests in mind, this comfortable lounge is decorated in lush shades of green and yellow. You’ll find a selection of magazines and books on topics such as gardening, flowers, plant care and flora species around the world. The lovely plants and fresh flowers bring a feeling of the outside, inside.

The Observatory

The tranquil atmosphere of The Observatory makes it the perfect spot from which to enjoy our Signature Experiences - Scenic Discoveries, where commentary supplied by our on board team will enhance your cruise journey; or our fantastic Ship and the Sea experience – learning to read navigational maps and charts with our officers. With panoramic windows and located directly above the Bridge, you'll have the same vantage point as the Captain, enjoying views of expansive oceans or coastlines we're sailing past. Later on, join our live bands for singing and dancing, accompanied by a selection of Champagne and sparkling cocktails or mocktails, designed to add an extra special touch to your cruise experience.

THE ORIENTAL TEA ROOM

The Oriental Tea Room has been designed using exotic décor and stylish furnishings - including beautifully hand-painted murals adorning the walls - offering a menu of the finest quality teas and herbal infusions for guests in relaxing and peaceful surroundings. Enjoy a selection of oolong, black, green and white teas from China, Japan and Taiwan, as well as a few favourite blends, such as Earl Grey and English Chamomile. There’s also the opportunity to participate in one of our tea-tasting experiences, where you’ll learn more about their origins. Join us to discover our range of tea-inspired cocktails, including a Royal Tea or Mint Julep, and selection of deliciously cold Japanese, Sinagaporean and Thai beers. We also offer two non-alcoholic cocktails, based on Sri Lankan and Chinese teas.

The Lido Bar

Whether you're spending the day relaxing in the sunshine and enjoying a few dips in the pool, or getting stuck into a good book, the Lido Bar is the ideal place to enjoy a drink if you're in need of something to help you cool off. The bar is open throughout the day and is a bright, open space with comfortable furniture, perfect for enjoying a cold beer perhaps, a soft drink or even a fruity, exotic cocktail or mocktail which our waiting staff will be happy to arrange for you. This is also the perfect venue for our cocktail-making sessions, as the retractable roof over the bar and pool area ensure you're kept warm at all times. 

The Auditorium

Borealis's Auditorium is where guests can enjoy a host of exciting, educational and interactive events, as well as the entertainment and interesting talks held in the Neptune Lounge. Perfectly designed to host cooking demonstrations and presentations, this spacious venue has plenty of comfortable seating, carefully positioned to offer great views of the stage area, so that guests are able to experience events such as our Treats of the Region - ideal for watching our talented chefs create delicious dishes that you'll also be able to sample and learn to cook at home.

SWIMMING POOL AND JACUZZI

Borealis' all-weather pool is perfect for taking a dip - no matter where you are in the world, either docked in a beautiful destination or on a day at sea, as the retractable roof will be open or closed, dependent on where you are cruising to. The pool is surrounded by open deck space and plenty of loungers, so is the ideal spot for soaking up the sunshine or losing yourself in a good book; and the al fresco Poolside Café and Lido Bar are close by when you’re after a bite to eat or something to drink. For blissful relaxation, head for the Jacuzzi and let the warm, bubbling water soak any cares away, while you chat with fellow guests.

The Card Room

Featuring an abundance of card tables and comfortable chairs, the Card Room on board Borealis provides guests with a quiet space to enjoy a competitive hand or two, or simply for a bit of fun, perhaps with a delicious coffee or tea from the nearby Bookmark Café. Bridge is a popular pursuit on board, so you'll be sure to find other guests who are up for a challenge. On some cruises, we'll have experts in Bridge tuition who are on hand to help you develop your skills.

The shops on board  Borealis offer all you may need during your time on board, for either basic essentials or for that occasion when you feel like treating yourself or a loved one to a holiday gift. Visit our Boutique Shop for perfumes and after shaves, bags or make up at Duty Free prices, or pick from the range of daytime clothing and evening wear; and perhaps choose something special from the Jewellery Shop. At the Port Shop, you'll find sun creams, shampoos and toothpaste, books and tasty snacks too.

Our Thermal Suite is a relaxation centre with the ambience of a Turkish bath, and our steam rooms are filled with aromatherapy vapours which are the perfect way to unwind and de-stress; while our heated ceramic relaxation beds are designed to match the curvature of your spine and melt away muscle tension. Fitness Centre

If you enjoy working out, our fully equipped Fitness Centre has a wide selection of running machines, cross trainers, bikes and both free weights and weights machines available. On board Borealis and across our fleet of ships, we also run a variety of complimentary yoga, pilates or stretching classes in the Fitness Centre, which are suitable for everyone from beginners to regular gym-goers. Join us for an invigorating Walk a Mile session or a relaxing sunrise pilates or yoga class out on deck. We also have circuits fitball or legs, bums & tums sessions. Details of classes can be found in your Daily Times each day. Or, treat yourself to Personal Training sessions with our fully qualified, friendly trainers, where you can receive a one-to-one programme tailored just to you.

Owners Suite is sized 1275 ft2, located near the lift/stairs and features floor-ceiling windows (opening to a step-out balcony), 1x King-size double bed, sofabed, en-suite bathroom (full-size whirlpool bath, WC-toilet, separate shower), guest toilet (powder room), separate living room, dining room, dressing room, pantry, mini-bar, refrigerator.

Premier Suite

Premier Suites are sized 575 ft2 and have a large sitting area and bedroom (1x King-size double bed, en-suite bathroom (full whirlpool bath-shower, WC-toilet), floor-ceiling windows (opening to a step-out balcony), separate dressing room (walk-in closet), sofabed, mini-bar, refrigerator.

Balcony Suite

All Suites have step-out balconies and are on Deck 6.

Category BS are sized 285 ft2, with bedroom (2x single beds convertible to Queen-size double bed), bathroom (whirlpool bath with shower / unless indicated "shower-only"), sitting area, floor-ceiling windows (opening to a balcony), mini-bar, refrigerator.

Categories BJ (Balcony Junior Suite) and JB (Single Balcony Suite) are sized 245-285 ft2 and offer amenities and furniture similar to BS.

Terrace Cabin

Terrace Cabins (called "Lanai Cabins" on MS Rotterdam) are all located midship on Deck 3, each sized 220 ft2, with bedroom (2x single beds convertible to Queen-size double bed), en-suite bathroom (WC-shower) and sliding glass doors opening to Deck 3's walk-around Promenade deck area.

Oceanview Cabin

Fred Olsen Bolette ship's Oceanview (Outside/Picture Window) cabins are in categories TC (Terrace Cabin), B-C (Superior Ocean View), CO (Superior Ocean View Fully Restricted), D-E (Ocean View), K (Single Ocean View), F (Porthole Cabin).

Categories B and C (Superior) and CO (Superior with obstructed view) are on Deck 3, sized 215 ft2, with bedroom (2x single beds convertible to Queen-size double bed), en-suite bathroom (bath plus shower / unless indicated "shower only"). Category CO cabins are with fully obstructed views.

Categories D and (Ocean View) are on Decks 1 and 2, same-sized (215 ft2) and with the same amenities/furniture as the above categories. Category K (Single) cabins are on decks 1-2-3-7, same-sized (215 ft2) and with the same amenities. Some single cabin bathrooms are with bath+shower, some are shower-only.

Category F (Porthole Window) are same-sized and located on decks 1-2. Their bathrooms are shower-only.

Note: On MS Rotterdam, Oceanview staterooms were sized between 140-320 ft2 (13-30 m2).

Interior Cabin

All Inside Cabins are sized 185 ft2 and divided into categories G (Superior), M-N (Single Superior) and H-I (Interior Room). All interior staterooms are with 2x single beds (convertible to Queen-size double bed) and en-suite bathroom (WC, shower).

Deck locations by category are as follows: G (2-3-6), M (2-7), N and H (1) and I (1-2-3).

Note: On MS Rotterdam, Inside cabins were sized between 160-180 ft2 (15-17 m2).

Wheelchair-Accessible Handicap Cabins

Fred Olsen Borealis ship's wheelchair-accessible (handicap) cabins are in categories BD (Superior OceanView, decks 3-6), FD (OceanView, deck 1), PSD (Premier Suite, deck 7) and BJD (Balcony Junior Suite, deck 6). All bathrooms are en-suite and with roll-in shower only.

BD and FD are sized 215 ft2 (20 m2).

Fred Olsen Borealis cabins review

The list of Rotterdam cabins by type includes a total of 232 Suites, 39 Balcony cabins, 346 Oceanviews (including 78x Lanai rooms), and 125 Inside cabins. The number of all cabin categories is 40. Of all cruise accommodations, 28% have a balcony, wheelchair accessible cabins are 26, connecting rooms number is 208.

Danube river cruises: an ultimate guide to cruising Budapest and beyond

Why, when and how to sail along Europe’s second-longest river, which meanders through the likes of Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest

Its banks are lined with dramatic, unspoiled landscapes, postcard-perfect towns and villages, and grand, opulent cities . Take a river cruise down this majestic river and you’ll encounter some of the world’s most stunning countryside, including the UNESCO-protected Wachau Valley, along with an array of fascinating cultures.

Cruising Europe’s waterways is a great way to see more of the region in a short period of time than you might do by land, and a river cruise can be the ideal introduction to cruise holidays for first-timers.

What is the best time of year to cruise the Danube River?

The Danube is a year-round destination with the exception of January and February, when few cruise lines operate here. Summer, when the weather is hottest, is peak season and as a result Europe’s cities are particularly crowded. Because of that, we recommend taking a Danube river cruise in April, May, September and October. Good Housekeeping's seven-night itinerary sails in September, when the weather should still be balmy and dry, but the summer hordes have gone home.

Where does a Danube river cruise start and end?

The Danube either flows through or delineates part of the border of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. Many cruises traverse the stretch between the capital cities of Vienna, Austria and Budapest , Hungary, starting or ending at either location.

This Small-ship Cruise Line Just Announced 2 New All-suite Vessels Will Join Its Fleet

Windstar Cruises is scheduled to launch Star Seeker in 2025 and Star Explorer in 2026.

Boutique small-ship cruise line Windstar Cruises is growing its fleet, adding two 224-passenger vessels — both acquisitions from Mystic Cruises —  in the next two years. Star Seeker is slated to make its debut in December 2025 and Star Explorer is scheduled to follow a year later in December 2026. 

Star Seeker is under construction, while Star Explorer is currently sailing as Quark Expeditions' World Explorer. B oth ships will be reworked to include signature features of Windstar ships, from a watersports platform to Owners Suites with wraparound balconies to a whirlpool on the bow. 

Dining, in particular, will be a main focus on the ships, as Windstar has a partnership with the James Beard Foundation. The ships' dining options spaces will be expanded to include the on-deck Star Grill, the casual Yacht Club café and lounge, and a re-imagined Amphora main dining room, which will now have outdoor seating.

“Our goal was to ensure these ships are unmistakably Windstar, and a significant amount of effort has gone into achieving this,” Christopher Prelog, Windstar Cruises’ president, said in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure . “We are thrilled for this expansion, building on the success of our game-changing Star Class in small-ship cruising with guests and travel partners, while offering new experiences. This growth reflects the dedication of our incredible crew and team, allowing us to broaden our destination portfolio and even bring one of our Wind Class sail ships back to Tahiti.”

Though both ships have ice-strengthened hulls capable of sailing in the polar regions, Windstar doesn't currently operate such itineraries, focusing primarily on the Americas, Europe, and the Pacific Islands. But these new ships may open doors to adventures in the years to come.

“As part of our company’s expanding portfolio, Windstar Cruises is poised for remarkable growth and an exciting future ahead," Andrew N. Todd, president and CEO of parent company Xanterra Travel Collection, said in a statement. "We’re excited about the possibilities of where Windstar will sail and the opportunities it brings our officers, crew and staff, and our guests.”

Widespread 911 outages are reported in four states

A large-scale outage on Wednesday affected residents’ ability to call the 911 emergency number in parts of Nebraska and Texas, the entire state of South Dakota and Las Vegas, according to local authorities.

In portions of Nevada, South Dakota and Nebraska, an outage was caused by a “third party company” that was installing a light pole, Lumen Technologies, a telecommunications company, said in an emailed statement Thursday.

Lumen did not say where the third-party company had installed the light pole. Lumen does not provide 911 services in Texas, a spokesperson said.

The Federal Communications Commission said in a post on social media that the 911 outages were under investigation.

In Las Vegas, calls to 911 on landline phones and mobile phones were not connecting for about two hours before service was restored at about 9 p.m., the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said on social media.

During the outage, dispatchers could see attempts to make calls from mobile phones and would call residents back, police said, and all attempted calls had been answered.

The outage also affected southern Nevada, the Nevada State Police said.

Outages were also reported by the local police departments of Dundy, Kearney and Howard in Nebraska. All three said between 12 a.m. and 12:30 a.m. on Facebook that service had been restored. In Chase County, local authorities said the line was down across the state for all cellular carriers except T-Mobile, but landlines could still call through.

The police department of Del Rio, Texas, said customers of one cellular provider were having issues calling 911. A spokesperson said the issue there was only affecting T-Mobile customers, and that service had not yet been restored to those customers at 1:15 a.m.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety said on social media that the outage was affecting residents throughout the entire state. In most parts of the state, residents could still text 911, and call their local police and county sheriff offices on their nonemergency phone lines, the department said. Among the areas affected were Sioux Falls and Rapid City, where officials provided alternate numbers before the line returned.

About 11 p.m., the South Dakota Highway Patrol said on social media that service had been restored.

At a news conference Thursday, officials in Sioux Falls said that 911 service was lost from 7:59 p.m. to 10:38 p.m. They said that the cause of the failure was unknown.

It was not immediately clear what had caused the outage. In February, a widespread AT&T outage temporarily cut off connections for users across the United States for many hours, leaving FirstNet, the emergency communications network, out of service. Police forces like the New York Police Department were unable to make calls or send emails.

Cruise to the Edge 2024: Review

T he former King Crimson dudes couldn’t catch a break on Cruise to the Edge 2024, which sailed March 8-13. Still, it didn’t stop them from spreading the warm glow of prog on a cruise ship crammed with nerdy, obsessive fans often satisfied just seeing their idols peruse the buffet options.

At the Stardust Theater, the classiest venue on a Norwegian cruise ship sailing from Miami to Cozumel, Adrian Belew led his reliable trio through classic Crim finger-breakers and mood-shifting solo cuts — and he beamed generously from the stage throughout, even though his guitar malfunctioned through a sizable chunk of the set. Days later at the pool stage, Belew’s tech issues were even more aggressive: Between still-uproarious takes on “Frame By Frame” and “Young Lions,” the band scrambled for solutions that involved fresh batteries and compressor-pedal swaps.

Finally, a moment of collective transcendence bubbled up during the encore: Belew’s former Crimson bandmate Tony Levin — also onboard with his own trio, Stick Men — walked through the evening breeze to thunderous applause, carrying his trusted low-end machine, the Chapman Stick. But the tech problems seemed to linger during Discipline anthem “Elephant Talk” — you couldn’t hear his signature funky riff at all, at least toward the front of the crowd. (If only we could have located the retirement-age dude wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with “I Fix Stuff, and I Know Things.” This was his time to shine!)

There’s another sad irony here: During Stick Men’s set a couple days prior, Levin was forced to sit out entirely, his instrument having been somehow sent to the wrong storage area. (Keyboardist Adam Holzman admirably stepped in for a unique, more jazz-leaning set seemingly heavy on improv.) But again, even seeing these giants together onstage, doing their best to hammer out a prog staple, meant something to everyone in their presence.

But Cruise to the Edge isn’t strictly a nostalgia machine, even if it routinely churns out plenty. A perfect example is Steve Hackett : During his co-headlining Stardust set, the former Genesis guitarist continued to maneuver through that band’s epics (including a version of the 23-minute “Supper’s Ready” that nearly left one guy in the balcony with whiplash); but he also played a smattering of new solo tracks, and even the old stuff had a fresh coat of paint, courtesy of some clever arrangements (partly thanks to woodwind player Rob Townshend).

And the lineup has only grown more diverse — in terms of age and style — over the years. One minute, you could soak in the medieval folk-prog stylings of Gryphon, who once opened for Yes in the ’70s; the next, you could bask in the modern prog-metal majesty of Haken or the open-armed, symphonic-scale beauty of Big Big Train. (The latter’s theater show, part of the veteran band’s first-ever U.S. tour, was among the cruise’s obvious highlights — from the violin-led churn of “Folklore” through the tear-streaked grandeur of “Victorian Brickwork.”)

Loving prog in the 21st century often makes you feel like an outcast. Because of that fact, Cruise to the Edge still feels like some kind of weird sanctuary — one that will hopefully continue to evolve with that loosely defined genre itself. In 2024, no amount of annoyance — from technical glitches to mansplaining collectors at the lounge bar — could dampen the soothing strains of Minimoog.
