Italy By High-Speed Train Tour

Italy By High-Speed Train

We really enjoyed our Italy by high speed train tour. The hotels were well located for walking to attractions, clean and the breakfasts were amazing! We had a bit of trouble finding the hotel in Florence but only because the same street changed names 3 times in 3 blocks! The trains were comfortable and on time. Pack lightly because no matter where your hotel is in Venice you will be dragging your suitcase up and down stairs.

Italy By Train

Our tour included a 2 day rail pass for Cinque Terre for a party of four, but it turns out what we received was only good for one day. We found this out when our tickets were checked by an official from TrenItalia. As a result we were each fined 55 Euros, plus we were required to purchase a ticket back to La Spezia. I have contacted Wingbuddy, but their after sales service is abysmal. They appear to be seriously understaffed. They no longer answer the phone for existing reservations, and they don't accept voicemail messages. As a result you need to send them an email, and it typically takes several days to get a response. This incident happened on Sept. 19, and as of Oct. 1 it has not been resolved. To date, I have received one email that says this will require investigation. While the rest of the experience was good, the poor customer service makes me very hesitant to recommend them.

Train tours Italy: Venice, Florence, Rome, Sorrento by train

Everything was great. Hotels were very good, meals were good but not outstanding. Luggage pickup & high speed trains were excellent made getting from city to city enjoyable & super easy. Most of the tour guides in the city were very good especially Pompeii & Siena not so much Florence. I can’t say enough about how great our tour leader was. Annabelle was super accommodating, always there for us, whatever we needed, no matter what it was. I had some physical limitations and she was always helpful to my wife and me. I was very sick the last 2 days in Sorrento & Annabelle helped my wife to get to the pharmacy to get some medicine which made it able for me to get better & able to get home. Annabelle made the trip incredible. Suellen & Jack Gauthier

This was a wonderful tour! There were 4 of us … two teenagers and parents. We loved every minute! We had one small miss step and got off at the wrong Naples train station. (Be aware there are two Naples train stations. Get off at the second one). I called the tour company and they had our driver meet us at the train station we got off

All fine otherwise. Guide and driver great. Major drawback was Starhotels Crystallo hotel in Bergamo - very basic - no tea or coffee facilities in room - big issue with us- nil available in lobby to make a cup of tea. No way would I describe this hotel as 4* The 2 dinners we ate there basically unedible.

Overall for a budget tour, this was a great tour. The tour guides were very knowledgeable. The accommodation was clean and spacious. The included meals were delicious. My only criticism is that there was not enough free time in Cinque Terre considering how much travel time was required.

What people love about train & rail tours in italy.

The tour itself was amazing! A lot of value for money. The tour guide did seem to be a bit annoyed at us at the end when we wanted to get transport back to the hotel, after walking over half a marathon. This is notable considering a few members had lower body injuries/ health concerns. Other than that, I really loved my trip. I made friends for life, memories I’ll cherish for years
Ourfearless tourleader Annamaria did an outstanding job. She gave us 110% at all times and rolled with the punches from train derailments to explaining to our group the optimal way to get 10 pounds of touring in a five pound bag and while still keeping everybody happy. Annamarias' experience combined with her local touring associates in Venice , Florence, Sienna and Rome gave us as much depth of information, history, and local flavor as possible within our alloted schedule. The best thing about the walking tour is the waistline didn't take a hit in spite of the occassions of overindulgence. Great folks Great memories Phil & Sue from The Mitten
Basically a tour that consisted of hotels, transport by train and a couple of short walking tours. We knew that before we went and so was fine. The addition of an extra night in Rome is needed with tickets for Colleseum and Palatine Hill on one day. We did this by ourselves although it was a lot of hassle trying to get tickets for the Colleseum and got ripped off.

Italy to Launch 3 New Dedicated Tourist Trains in 2024 — Including Vintage Rides on Historic Trains and the Luxe Orient Express’ La Dolce Vita

Three tiers of rail adventures will be offered, ranging from luxury to regional services.

italy rail tours 2024

This year, travelers from abroad are forecasted to make 75 million trips to Italy — a jump from 56 million last year. So it's no surprise the European nation is looking ahead to point visitors to more sustainable options. In response, Italy's state-owned train operator Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS) is launching a new brand — FS Treni Turistici Italiani — focused on tourist trains in 2024.

“The new company was born with the mission of proposing an offer of railway services expressly designed and calibrated for quality, sustainable tourism attentive to rediscovering the riches of the Italian territory,” the company said in a release obtained by Travel + Leisure.

The company will offer three levels of service, including lassoing in existing services.

The top tier will be luxury trains, which includes the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, A Belmond Train that already runs with itineraries across the continent in Florence, Rome, Venice, and Verona. Also as part of the upscale offerings will be the highly-anticipated Orient Express’ La Dolce Vita , which is set to restart its engines next year after it went on hiatus in 1977.

Next will be the espressi (express) and treni storici (historic trains) — the most robust of the new journeys. The express trains will feature refurbished cars from the 1980s and 1990s, decked out with dining and sleeping cars and storage areas for skis, bikes, and mobility vehicles.

The historic ones will be from the FS Italiane Foundation’s collection of more than 400 historic and protected vehicles. They’ll operate more frequently and also offer programming, like guided tours, walking routes, and tastings.

Courtesy of Archivio Fondazione FS Italiane

New journeys will be introduced, both day and night, on medium- and long-range routes between popular destinations. That includes from Rome to Catanzaro, passing through Metaponto and Reggio Calabria; from Rome or Milan to Calalzo/Cortina; and from San Candido to Genoa.

Finally, the regional services will gear up routes to ensure access to less visited destinations that are “rich in history,” including “villages and areas of scenic and naturalistic interest, distinguished by peculiar food and wine traditions and agribusiness,” the company said. CNN also reports that there will be "cruise" trains that are focused on short breaks, like leaving Rome on a Friday night and arriving in Calalzo-Pieve for a weekend of skiing at Cortina d’Ampezzo. Also on the docket: a southern Italian journey from Umbria to Puglia lasting about five or six days.

“In addition to responding to the growing demand for rail tourism in our country, FS Italian Tourist Trains will therefore contribute to promoting a new truly sustainable tourism, to reach both well-known destinations and destinations outside the classic circuits,” the company said of its upcoming services.

Notice to Our Valued Customers: Understanding Our Euro-Based Pricing

At Italy4Real, we strive to offer you the highest quality services at the best value. You may have noticed that our prices are quoted in Euros rather than U.S. Dollars. Here’s why this benefits you:

Complete Transparency

Your invoice will clearly indicate the current exchange rate, so you are fully informed about the exact amount you are paying. No hidden fees or surcharges—just the price as it is.

Flexibility in Payment

The U.S. Dollar to Euro exchange rate will only be locked in at the time of your final payment. This allows you more time to benefit from favorable exchange rates, should they arise.

By quoting in Euros, we ensure that you are getting the most for your money, without hidden costs or surprises. Thank you for choosing Italy4Real for your European adventures, where your experience and value always come first.

Understanding Room Types: What Do DBL, SGL, and TPL Mean?

When browsing through our tour packages, you’ll encounter abbreviations like DBL, SGL, and TPL. Understanding these terms will help you make the best choice for your travel needs. Here’s a quick guide to what each means:

DBL (Double Room)

A Double Room, abbreviated as DBL, is designed to accommodate two people. It generally features one double bed or two twin beds. This is the perfect choice for couples or two individuals comfortable sharing a room.

SGL (Single Room)

SGL stands for Single Room, which is intended for solo travelers. These rooms come with a single bed and are designed for one person. Choosing a Single Room ensures you’ll have a private space all to yourself during your trip.

TPL (Triple Room)

Triple Rooms, or TPL, are rooms designed for three travelers. They often feature either one double bed and one single bed or three single beds. This is a convenient option for families or small groups of friends traveling together.

Each room type comes with its own pricing, reflecting the number of travelers it can comfortably accommodate. We hope this clarification enhances your trip-planning experience. If you have any more questions, our Travel Experts are always here to help. Thank you for choosing Italy4Real, where your dream European vacation becomes a reality.

Train strikes in April and May 2024: Full list of dates and lines affected

Overtime bans, an action short of a strike, also mean some services may not be running or may be reduced as drivers refuse to work their rest days.

Thursday 11 April 2024 08:46, UK

italy rail tours 2024

Drivers at 16 rail companies have started a fresh wave of strikes, plus overtime bans, causing disruption to the rail network.

Update: All rail strikes have now concluded, and the Tube strikes that were due to take place in May have been called off.

The strikes are part of a long-running dispute over pay and will take place across April and May.

Tube strikes planned for April and May have been called off.

In an "entirely separate dispute", ASLEF members will also strike and refuse to do overtime at LNER on specific dates in April "because of the company's failure to adhere to the agreed bargaining machinery", the union said.

LNER's alleged failure to adhere to bargaining machinery refers to it using managers to drive trains on strike days.

People are advised to check before they travel.

Here's what's happening when:

Rail strike dates

Friday 5 April

Strikes will affect Avanti West Coast, East Midlands Railway, West Midlands Trains, and CrossCountry.

Saturday 6 April

Strikes will affect Chiltern, GWR, LNER, Northern, and TransPennine Trains.

Monday 8 April

Strikes will affect Greater Anglia, c2c, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern/Gatwick Express, South Western Railway main line and depot drivers, and SWR Island Line.

Overtime ban dates

Thursday 4 April

Tuesday 9 April

People are advised to check before they travel, as some areas may have no service.

LNER action dates

Members will strike on Saturday 20 April and refuse to work non-contractual overtime from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 April .

Why are the strikes happening?

ASLEF says the LNER strikes are because of "the company's persistent failure to comply with existing agreements".

Nigel Roebuck, an ASLEF organiser in the northeast, said the operator had been trying to get "every driver manager and driver instructor to work on strike days".

A spokesperson said: "LNER has used managers - paid £500 a shift - to drive trains on strike days and, after the expiry of the last non-contractual overtime agreement, on most days of the week now.

"There is no agreement in place for management to drive services on mainline infrastructure.

"It results in branch line services - such as Lincoln, Skipton, and Harrogate - being cancelled because of a lack of route knowledge and means virtually no driver training is being done."

Mick Whelan, ASLEF general secretary, said of the rail strikes : "Last month, when we announced renewed mandates for industrial action, because under the Tories' draconian anti-union laws we have to ballot our members every six months, we called on the train companies, and the government, to come to the table for meaningful talks to negotiate a new pay deal for train drivers who have not had an increase in salary since 2019.

"Our members voted overwhelmingly - yet again - for strike action."

A Rail Delivery Group spokesperson said: "Nobody wins when industrial action impacts people's lives and livelihoods, and we will work hard to minimise any disruption to our passengers.

"We want to resolve this dispute, but the ASLEF leadership need to recognise that hard-pressed taxpayers are continuing to contribute an extra £54m a week just to keep services running post-COVID.

"We continue to seek an agreement with the ASLEF leadership and remain open to talks to find a solution to this dispute."

When the strikes on the London Underground were announced, Finn Brennan, ASLEF's full-time organiser on the network, said in a statement: "ASLEF Tube train drivers will strike in April and May in a long-running dispute over London Underground's failure to give assurances that changes to our members' terms and conditions will not be imposed without agreement and that all existing agreements will be honoured.

"Despite a previous commitment to withdraw plans for massive changes to drivers' working conditions, London Underground management has established a full-time team of managers preparing to impose their plans.

Sadiq Khan said they had been called off after "talking and engaging with transport staff and trade unions rather than working against them".

Translating to 'little green train', the Trenino Verde is a sublime – and surprisingly little-known – way to see the Sardinian countryside. Trenino Verde, Sardinia, Italy

Translating to 'little green train', the Trenino Verde is a sublime – and surprisingly little-known – way to see the Sardinian countryside. This 130-year-old vintage railway has five different routes across the country, totaling 272 miles (438km) of track, which pass through a treasure trove of landscapes, including olive groves, quaint villages, glittering seas, craggy coastlines and steep peaks.

Among the gorgeous spots you can get out and explore are the medieval village of Mandas with its 4,000-year-old stone towers; Isili, which is known for its copper artisans; and the traditional hilltop town of Laconi. You could travel along every part of the railway without getting bored, but if you have to pick one, the 37-mile (59km) stretch between Tempio and Palau is said to be especially captivating. Tickets start from just $12 and journeys take between two and four hours.

West Highland Line, Scotland, UK

It’s little wonder that ScotRail's West Highland Line is often dubbed Britain's most scenic train route, with rugged Highland landscapes, rolling hills and windswept moorlands galore. But the most picture-perfect (and famous) section of the rail line, which runs between the cities of Glasgow and Mallaig, is the part where the train crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct. Recognize it? That’s because it’s the same bridge the Hogwarts Express crosses in the Harry Potter films.

For an even more authentic Harry Potter experience, you can travel across the famous viaduct on the Jacobite steam train, which is used in the films. The seasonal service typically runs between early April and late October each year, covering the 84-mile (135km) round trip between Fort William and Mallaig in leisurely style. It’s a little more expensive than the ScotRail line, with an adult return costing $61. The ScotRail service line starts at around $19 for an off-peak day return.

La Rhune, France

You’d be hard-pressed to find a much more adorable train journey than this. Located in France’s captivating Basque Country, the Rhune Railway (or Le Petit Train de la Rhune) is a fabulous cog railway which takes passengers on a 35-minute ascent up to the 2,969-foot (905m) summit of its namesake mountain. The picture-perfect chestnut-wood carriages have been navigating this steep section of track since 1924.

When you’re done fawning over its gorgeous interiors, peel your eyes back outside to enjoy some seriously beautiful landscapes as the train winds up the peak. Along the way, you’ll see a huge variety of flora and fauna, including pottok (Basque ponies), raptors and many types of wildflower. Return tickets cost $20 and the railway is open from mid-April to early September each year.

Odontotos Rack Railway, Greece

Operating on the world’s narrowest gauge track – just a hair-raising two-and-a-half feet (0.75m) wide – southern Greece’s Odontotos Rack Railway is a stunning and historic way to experience the Peloponnese Gorge. Starting in the coastal town of Diakopto, it runs alongside the Vouraikos River, through rock-hewn tunnels and next to adrenalin-pumping sheer drops before arriving at the mountain town of Kalavrita.

The leisurely one-hour journey covers a total distance of 14 miles (22.5km) but there are an impressive 49 bridges in total, plus six tunnels which have been carved directly into the rock. As well as being jaw-droppingly scenic and historic (the train has been in operation for over 120 years), Odontos Rack Railway is also a total bargain, costing just over $9.50 for a single or $19 for a return trip.

Here are more stunning train journeys that don't cost a fortune

Naturally, such a monumental journey takes a while to complete, with the typical itinerary taking nine days to cover the full route.

Stops include the lakeside city of Mora, the small Lapland town of Gällivare and the city of Östersund, where a UNESCO-recognized food scene and pretty cobbled streets await you. On the train, keep your eyes peeled for reindeer and elks – there are usually plenty to spot along this route. Packages are available from both Kristinehamn and Mora, with prices and availability on consultation.

North York Moors Railway, England, UK

Whisking you back to the golden era of train travel, the 24-mile (39km), 1h 45min journey between Whitby and Pickering in the north of England promises to be a trip to remember. This steam-powered railway has been around since the 1830s and received a new lease of life in 1967, when a group of local volunteers took on the task of restoring it.

For the ultimate luxury experience, hop aboard the Pullman dining carriage, where you can enjoy either a four-course dinner service or three-course lunch as the train ambles through the countryside. Unmissable attractions along the way include the 1930s-era Pickering station, Goathland, which served as Hogsmeade Station in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, as well as the historic port of Whitby where the journey ends. The train runs from April to October every year and tickets on the dining car start at $84.
