Walled-In Wonders

A stoned wall entrance to the Intramuros from the Spanish conquest in Manila, Philippines

The walled city of Intramuros will take you back in time to the Spanish conquest of Manila in the late 16th century. See the Fort Santiago Citadel itself and the treasures within, like the Spanish Colonial San Agustin Church and Bahay Tsinoy Museum, which is dedicated to the Philippines' Chinese immigrant community.

Modern Manila

Manila isn't just about the past. The vibrant Makati district is pulsating and futuristic. Its tree-lined boulevards are home to modern architectural landmarks like the Ayala Museum and contemporary shopping malls, like Glorietta and the Greenbelt, which are marvels of architecture (and air conditioning) in their own right.

Traditional food in the Philippines with noodles, vegetables, and lime served on the side

Local Cuisine

Whether you opt for outdoor stalls around Intramuros or upscale Makati restaurants such as Sentro 1771 in Makati, make traditional Filipino cuisine your priority. Manila cruises offer you the opportunity to try pancit bihon guisado , fried noodles with soy sauce, citrus and veggies. Tuck into sisig , a crispy pork casserole spiced with chilies and flavored with calamansi, a local citrus fruit.

A bunch of colorful handmade purse made out of Manila hemp sold on the streets in the Philippines

If there's one thing Manila's got plenty of, it's shopping. From the shopping malls, to souvenir stalls both inside and outside the walls of Intramuros, you'll be spoiled for choice. Buy "Jeepney" keychains that depict the rural Filipino vehicle for a high kitsch factor, or choose colorful Banig crafts made from traditional Manila hemp grasses for a more rural, traditional souvenir.

Manila, Philippines

cruise ship in philippines

A Filipino city of incredible contrasts, variety and rich history, some of the earliest parts of Manila were getting going in the 16th century long before it would become one of the world’s most densely packed cities. One example of the early days: the neighborhood of Intramuros actually started as the neighborhood fortress… and you can still visit their local landmarks today, like San Augstin Church, Casa Manila and yes, even the old kid on the block, Fort Santiago itself. In Manila, the influences come from all over, with Malay, Chinese, American, Spanish and Arab cultures helping to create an international mix you can experience right on the street… or perhaps best through the arts? If you agree, check out the Rizal Park, home to multiple museums, or Cultural Center of the Philippines for live performances, screenings and more. And we haven’t even mentioned the tropical countryside, or nearby Corregidor Island with its kayaking, birdwatching and extensive World War II memorial history.

Manila cruise port

Region Asia

Local Time 2024-04-16 00:03

Port Manila cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Manila, Luzon Island Philippines. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Manila is Philippines' capital city and the country's largest seaport. It has an excellent deep and sheltered harbour with built-up modern waterfront. On the south bank of Pasig river is situated the original city, Intramuros, established in 1571 by the Spanish, and containing unique examples of 17th-century Spanish architecture, together with encircling wall begun in 1590. During World War II, lots of the old city was destroyed. From Manila tourists can also visit Malacanang Palace, Taal volcano and Pagsanjan Falls.

The Philippine capital of Manila was established by King Philip II of Spain. In the years which followed, the Spanish successfully prevented the Portuguese, Chinese and Dutch from settling in the Philippines. But the British occupied Manila during the Seven Years' War, though they agreed to return it to Spain under 1763 Treaty of Paris. During World War II, the Japanese took control of Manila, and eventually the United States recaptured the islands and returned them to Philippines. In 1946, the country was granted full independence. The first president was elected, Manuel Roxas. In more recent history was the exile of former leader Ferdinand Marcos and new Democratic leadership.

Ninoy Aquino International Airport also serves the airline Air Juan that provides regularly scheduled domestic flights linking directly Manila City with  Subic Bay Freeport , Boracay Island (Caticlan) , Busuanga Bay and Puerto Galera. Air Juan's flights are direct (without passing through other airports) which allows tourists to arrive from Manila directly to their local hotels and resorts.

Port Manila

Port Manila (officially Pantalan ng Maynila) has several large facilities and terminals serving the maritime shipping trade. The port serves the entire Manila metro area. The port is located on Manila Bay and is ranked as Philippines' largest seaport. The port is operated by Philippine Ports Authority (state-owned corporation), which manages most of the country's ports.

Manila Bay's entrance has width 19 km (12 ml) expanding to 48 km (30 ml). Mariveles (Bataan province) is the port's anchorage area. Port Manila is composed of North Harbor, South Harbor, and MICT (Container Terminal).

  • North Harbor seaport is in the Tondo Area and has 7 docking piers (numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14). North Harbor port is accessible through Radial Road 10. The North Port Passenger Terminal is the facility that serves all ferries and cruise ships to Manila.
  • South Harbor seaport is in the Port Area and has 5 docking piers (numbers 3, 5, 9, 13, 15), South Harbor is accessible by Bonifacio Drive road. The port's passenger terminal ("Eva Macapagal Super Terminal") is between piers 13 and 15 and also serves as the 2GO Ferry company's main hub.
  • Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) is located between North Harbor and South Harbor and is accessible via MICT South Access Road. In 2011, the MICT Terminal was ranked world's 38th largest container port (annual shipping traffic 3,26 million TEU-countainers). The 2014-inaugurated Berth 6 increased port's capacity by 18%.

In mid-October 2018, Philippine Ports Authority started a capacity improvement project at MICT (operated by International Container Terminal Services Inc). The project includes construction of 4 new berths (7, 8, 9, 10), all with max draft/water depth 14,5 m (48 ft), allowing docking of larger boxships . Terminal's berth expansion was funded by ICTSI Group at total cost USD 380+ million.

In addition to seaport's capacity improvements was the purchase of 16 new RTGs (rubber-tired gantry cranes, operational since April 2019) plus 2 super-post-Panamax quay cranes (dockside gantries) that can serve boxships with capacity over 22,000 TEUs. Terminal's current container-handling equipment includes 18 quay cranes and 58 RTGs (74 by 2020). The large dockside gantries are China-manufactured (by ZPMC-Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co Ltd) and each has max reach 16 rows (across twin). The RTGs are standard-diesel and Japan-made (by Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding Co Ltd).

For season 2017,  Star Cruises  (Asian company owned by Genting Hong Kong) announced its first Manila homeport deployment (for roundtrip itineraries) of its vessel  SuperStar Virgo . The ship has 13 decks and 935 cabins (capacity 2400 passengers plus 1100 crew). It offers a 5-night / 6-day cruise itinerary ("Jewels of the South China Sea")  from Manila to Currimao-Laoag Philippines (colonial buildings, baroque churches, Pagudpud's white-sand beaches), Kaohsiung Taiwan (Chinese culture and cuisine) and Hong Kong China (world's most popular metro city / shopping, dining, nightlife). The ship's Manila roundtrips started in March 2017 (departures March 19 through May 29) and also during summer months. Start Cruises' "Early Bird Discount" booking prices start from PHP 24,500 (around USD 450) per person (double occupancy Inside Stateroom). Third and fourth passengers (Quad share cabins) received additional 50% discount.

Our Award-Winning Cruise Ships in the Philippines

Helpful tips before you go.

We sail to the Philippines in the months of December and January. This is an ideal time to visit since the tropical weather is still hot, but not stifling, and it’s before the rainy season begins. Since the weather is hot and humid, you’ll want to pack light, breathable clothing in natural fibers like cotton and linen. The style of dress is generally more conservative in the Philippines than you may be used to in the U.S. and other countries, so keep that in mind when packing.

Don’t forget to pack for the other ports you’ll be visiting during your Philippines cruise. Most will require similar clothing, but if you head farther north and plan to venture into any mountainous regions while in port, you’ll likely want some warmer layers.

The ports you’ll visit depend on the itinerary you choose. You can cruise to the Philippines on one of our Vietnam, Philippines, and Hong Kong itineraries, where you’ll sail between Hong Kong and Singapore, or cruise roundtrip from Singapore. Along the way, you’ll visit the beautiful Philippines cruise ports of call as well as cities in Vietnam. You’ll also have an overnight port of call in both Singapore and Hong Kong. On the roundtrip itinerary from Singapore that sails to the Philippines and back to Singapore, you’ll have an overnight in Hong Kong, and you’ll visit Malaysia and China.

Puerto Princesa, Philippines

Puerto Princesa, the capital of Palawan in the Philippines, is home to 250,000 people and offers a vastly different experience from Manila’s often overwhelming big-city dynamism. For many travelers, it’s simply a gateway to the resorts of El Nido, also on Palawan Island. Those who spend some time here, however, will discover a city that combines a laid-back vibe with beautiful sandy beaches and a wealth of marine life. Nearby, there are also lush mountains, rain forests, waterfalls and dramatic limestone cliffs. Among the most popular sights are the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, where visitors are welcome to celebrate Mass accompanied by choral singing; the Palawan Heritage Center, which displays local artworks and crafts; and the peaceful Palawan Butterfly Ecological Garden and Tribal Village. The city's biggest draws, however, are a boat trip through the limestone caves of the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, and the beaches and islands scattered around scenic Honda Bay—perfect for snorkeling, sunbathing and picnics. Speaking of food, a visit to the most famous restaurant in the city, Kalui, is guaranteed to be a memorable experience for seafood fans; adventurous foodies can order crocodile sisig,  a traditional—and delicious—stir-fry dish.

Thailand to make a strong bid as philippine rice imports set to increase, dangerous heat level recorded in many areas in philippines; temperature to go above 43 degrees celsius.

MANILA (Xinhua): The Philippines on Sunday said four Filipino sailors were among the crew of a container ship seized by Iranian forces in the Persian Gulf on Saturday.

In a statement, the Philippines' Department of Migrant Workers confirmed the seizure of the vessel MSC Aries "with four Filipino seafarers on board," adding that it has contacted the families of the four sailors.

The Philippine government has been coordinating with the licensed manning agency, the ship manager, and the operator to ensure the seafarers' safety and well-being and work on the release, the statement said.

The Navy of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on Saturday seized the Israeli-linked, Portuguese-flagged container ship, named MSC Aries, near the Strait of Hormuz, the official news agency IRNA reported.

The Philippines is among the biggest suppliers of maritime labor in the world, providing almost one-fifth of the worldwide 1.2 million seafarers, according to International Labor Organization.

Last November, 17 Filipino seafarers were taken hostage after an Israeli cargo ship was hijacked by Yemen's Houthi militants in the Red Sea.

In March, two Filipino sailors were killed in a missile strike by Houthi militants on a cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden, off southern Yemen. - Xinhua

Philippines flags ‘harassment’ by Chinese vessels ahead of Japan, US drills

Recent clashes between the Philippines and China in the South China Sea have raised concerns of a maritime escalation.

A Philippine Coast Guard personnel looks through a binocular while conducting a resupply mission for Filipino troops stationed at a grounded warship in the South China Sea,

The Philippines has said that two Chinese coastguard ships “harassed” Filipino fishing vessels within its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the disputed South China Sea, ahead of joint military drills with its allies.

The coastguard vessels “went as far as pretending to man their water cannon and threatening the Filipino fishermen” in the Iroquois reef on April 4, Jay Tarriela, spokesperson of the Philippine Coast Guard posted on X on Saturday.

Philippines summons beijing envoy over south china sea water cannon attack, philippines accuses china of new water cannon attacks in south china sea, philippines says ship damaged in south china sea incident with chinese boat.

“This aggressive action stems from China’s greed and unfounded claim that these waters belong to them based on their imaginary dashed line,” Tarriela wrote in a statement.

There was no immediate comment from China, which claims sovereignty over almost the entire South China Sea.

“It is important to note that Rozul Reef falls within the Philippines’ EEZ since it is located at approximately 128 nautical miles away from Palawan,” Tarriela added, referring to the reef by its Filipino name. The Philippines also refers to the area of the South China Sea within its EEZ as the West Philippine Sea.

The Philippines and China have reported several maritime run-ins in recent months, which included the use of water cannon. The two countries have long faced off near the disputed reefs in the vast and resource-rich sea lane.

Since taking power in 2022, Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has pursued warmer ties with the United States and other Western nations and adopted a tough line against what he sees as Chinese hostility.

He said last month that the Philippines will take countermeasures against China after the latest confrontation injured Filipino soldiers and damaged vessels.

On Sunday, the Philippines will host joint naval and air drills with the US, Japan and Australia in the disputed area, as it seeks to deepen ties with its allies to counter China’s growing assertiveness in the region.

In a joint statement on Saturday, the participating defence chiefs of the four countries said the drill would demonstrate their “collective commitment to strengthen regional and international cooperation in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific”.

Next week, US President Joe Biden is due to hold the first trilateral summit with Marcos Jr and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Washington, DC.

The drills will include naval and air force units from all four countries, the statement said, but did not provide further details.

Japan’s embassy in Manila said that “anti-submarine warfare training” would be included in the exercises.

China has blamed the Philippines for raising tensions in the contested waterway.

Top US officials have repeatedly declared the United States’ “ironclad” commitment to defending the Philippines against an armed attack in the South China Sea.

“These activities with our allies Australia, Japan, and the Philippines underscore our shared commitment to ensuring that all countries are free to fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows,” US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said.

Disney Cruise Line names its newest cruise ship

I t was bound to happen sometime, but Disney Cruise Line waited until its last of three new sister ships to name one Disney Destiny.

The sister ship to Disney Wish, which debuted out of Port Canaveral in 2022 and the soon-to-debut Disney Treasure arriving in Central Florida this December, the third ship in what was originally called the Trident class had its keel laying ceremony Wednesday at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

It won’t start sailing until 2025, and its home port has yet to be named, but among the details revealed for what will be the eighth ship in the cruise line’s fleet was the theme of the vessel, “Heroes & Villains.”

As such, the filigree artwork for the bow will be of Minnie Mouse wearing a superhero-style outfit complete with a cape.

The cruise line said among the characters from which it will mine features on board will be classic Disney animation films, “The Lion King,” “Hercules” and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians.”

Disney of course owns plenty of good vs. evil intellectual property including Star Wars and Marvel.

“The Disney Destiny will celebrate our most legendary Disney stories and characters, bringing them to life in new and exciting ways exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager for the cruise line, in a press release. “As we continue to expand our fleet, the Disney Destiny will further strengthen our position as a leader in family cruising.”

Just like Disney Wish and Treasure, Disney Destiny will be powered by liquefied natural gas, a cleaner burning fuel that’s part of the cruise industry’s efforts to reduce emissions.

All three are the 144,000 gross-ton, 1,254-stateroom vessels but still targeting the 4,000-passenger capacity of its older ships, 2011’s Disney Dream and 2012’s Fantasy. The line’s first ships are the smaller Disney Magic that debuted in 1998 and Disney Wonder in 1999. They come in at 84,000 gross tons with 875 staterooms.

The line also is finishing construction for an Asia-bound cruise ship named Disney Adventure that will be the largest in the fleet at 208,000 gross tons.

Disney Wish became the line’s first new ship in more than a decade. It continues to do short three- and four-night Bahamas sailings while Disney Treasure will pick up seven-night trips to the Caribbean.
