E-bike - Ireland's West Coast
My clients said that Wilderness Ireland Bike Tours was amazing. There was a small snafu in that TourRadar asked for bike jacket and jersey size so my clients thought they would get those for the tour but that was not something Wilderness Ireland provided. Otherwise, they absolutely loved it. Kathi

Europe’s green gem
Ireland bike tours.
From its legendary hospitality to its breathtaking green vistas, from its charming inns and bed and breakfasts to its majestic countryside castles, Ireland is certainly a cyclist’s paradise. Charming pubs, where the Irish spirit remains alive today in this land of friendly people, help round out the experience after a day’s riding.
Meander along quiet back roads through lush landscapes, compelling backdrops for historic villages, sprawling farmland with grazing animals, and ancient and medieval ruins. Pedal at your own pace through endless green hills across the island to dramatic coastal cliffs and rocky shores.
“We rode through a host of different landscapes: eerie bogs, rivers, fjords and the dramatic bens that seem to rise right out of the water. We loved rolling under a green tunnel of trees, then entering a new vista of fields edged in ancient stone walls.”

When it comes to cycling in Ireland, here are the very best routes across the country.
Bring the family on your next bike ride
Ireland has fantastic family friendly cycle paths and greenways which make for unforgettable holidays. Alongside these routes, there are some exciting variations that experienced cyclists can add on to the cycle, while the rest of the family enjoy activities in the area.
Waterford Greenway , Waterford
46km one way | Greenway | 2-6 hours
The glorious Waterford Greenway is the ideal place to introduce your family to a cycling holiday. Starting in buzzing Waterford City , fuel up for the day ahead with an energizing breakfast at The Granary Café and stop by Waterford Greenway Bike Hire to pick up rental bikes. The 46km long greenway runs west along the base of the Comeragh Mountains, through the Waterford countryside, before turning for the sunny coast and ending in Dungarvan .
The Waterford Greenway is a gently rolling route with astounding views around every bend, making it a great introduction to cycling. It takes between two or three hours to arrive at Dungarvan, a pretty harbourside town with great places to eat as you watch colourful boats bob along the harbour.
Explore the Copper Coast
Bid farewell to the family as they hop on the shuttle bus back to the bike rental shop and turn your attention to the Sean Kelly Cycle Route on the Copper Coast . This 73km ride from Dungarvan to Passage East has some punchy climbs as it makes its way through Tramore and on to the endpoint in a total of three hours.
Embrace Waterford City’s family activities
Reunited with the family, enjoy the rest of your holiday in Waterford with a visit to King of the Vikings , the world’s first Viking virtual reality experience. Teach the kids all about where their food comes from at Grow HQ , this intriguing café makes growing food part of the dining experience and often runs workshops and demonstrations.
Great Western Greenway , Mayo
49km one way | Greenway | 2-5 hours
The windswept coastal cycle from Westport to Cashel along the Great Western Greenway is one of Ireland’s best family bike routes. Base yourself in Westport for the weekend and spend a morning wandering the charming streets before setting out on your bike ride.
The 49km long path is a manageable route that takes between two to three hours for novice cyclists to complete and the reward is incredible views of Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick in the background. Cross over to Acaill (Achill Island) and jump into the crystal clear waters of Keem Bay before heading on to the finish line in Cashel.
For a very handy pickup service anywhere along the greenway, get in touch with Westport Bike Hire , so your family can head back to the mainland and spend the afternoon walking the grounds of stunning Westport House .
Take the gravel road back
Mix things up on your cycle back to Westport by taking the alternative gravel section between Mulranny and Newport . This off-road route runs alongside the greenway but has trickier sections to navigate with some technical climbs and challenging terrain.
See the best of Westport
After working up an appetite in the fresh air, book in for a hearty meal at An Port Mór Restaurant or Maddens bistro in the centre of town. Go on an exciting kayak tour around Clew Bay or hike to the summit of Croagh Patrick, making family memories to treasure forever.
Best cycles in Ireland for regular bike riders
Check out these bike routes for regular cyclists who love the challenge of climbing big hills. There’s always lots of activities to enjoy after your cycle, so stay for a little longer and experience all the great things to do in these areas.
Birr Cycling Hub , Offaly
5km - 73km routes | Forest Paths and Road | Time depends on route chosen
For a unique cycling holiday in Ireland, pack your bike and head to Offaly and enjoy the Birr Cycling Hub . Rather than limiting yourself to one route, this hub has five loops ranging from a spritely 5km sprint to a lengthy 73km stint through the Offaly countryside and Slieve Bloom Mountains. The Birr Cycling Hub includes idyllic routes up to 10km long on car free trails through Lough Boora Discovery Park and longer routes to Shannon Harbour.
Take on one route per day or stitch together your favourites and really explore Offaly. Don’t leave without cycling the 24km long Pilgrim’s Road to Clonmacnoise where you’ll experience Ireland’s rich history and see the ancient monastic settlement founded by St Ciarán in the 9 th century.
Explore beautiful Birr
Stay in the gorgeous town of Birr and experience this wonderfully welcoming place during and after your bike ride. The loops through the foothills of the Slieve Bloom Mountains pass through Kinnitty , the perfect excuse to treat yourself to a delicious meal at enchanting Kinnitty Castle. Keep your eyes peeled for the only pyramid in Ireland as you leave the village.
Take on your first mountain bike trail
Mix up your biking holiday activities and drop by Slieve Bloom Mountain Bike Centre to experience the exhilarating rush of mountain biking. A few laps on the thrilling trails and you’ll be hooked on this hobby.
Killykeen Forest Park and the Cavan Lakes, Cavan
32km loop | Roads | 2 hours
The short cycle routes through peaceful Killykeen Forest Park in Cavan are popular with families, but this park is also a fantastic place for regular cyclists. Set off from the centre of Killykeen on a 32km looped route that snakes its way through a leafy landscape dotted with rippling lakes and rolling hills.
With only 220m of climbing on the loop, the hills provide a nice variation throughout the route, rather than any significant challenges. Drop into Farnham Estate , around the 20km mark and treat yourself to a delicious lunch, fuel for the remainder of the cycle.
See Cavan in a whole new light
Stay in Cavan Town or bask in nature’s beauty and camp in Killykeen Forest Park. Once you’ve experienced Cavan’s delights by bike, it’s time to hop in a kayak with Cavan Adventure Centre , paddling around Lough Oughter where the spellbinding Clough Oughter Castle sits on an island in the middle of the lake.
Relax and indulge in County Cavan
For the ultimate relaxing getaway play a round of golf at one of Ireland’s oldest golf courses, County Cavan Golf Club and book in for a full body massage at Ciúin Spa at the Slieve Russell Hotel. Stop off at Cavan County Museum on your way home and get an even deeper insight into The Lake County.
Benbulben , Sligo
55km loop | Roads and Country Lanes | 3.5 hours
This brilliant bike route in Sligo is a fantastic way to see the Yeats County. Beginning at Grange , between Sligo Town and Mullaghmore , the bike ride begins along quiet, rural roads but the striking peak of Benbulben soon comes into view.
See the lush green slopes of this flat topped mountain before rounding the bend and witnessing the dramatic carved gorges on the opposite side.
One magnificent landscape is replaced by another as you approach two of Ireland’s most beautiful waterfalls, the Devil’s Chimney and Glencar Waterfall . Flick through your gears and spin your way up the only significant climb. From here, freewheel down to the viewing point where you’ll quickly catch your breath before Hag’s Leap takes it away again. This majestic free standing tower is one of Ireland’s most special sights and well worth the cycle alone.
Spend some time in Sligo Town
Book a room in buzzing Sligo Town for a few nights and fall in love with this scenic place. Take some time to discover the amazing restaurants, artisan food producers and the Sligo Food Trail . Finish up in Shoot The Crows , a legendary pub with stone floors, low ceilings, chatty locals and chestnuts roasting on the fire.
An action packed short break on land and sea
You don’t have to look far for more adventurous activities in Sligo. Head for the coast and watch the waves crash against the shore with a walk along the golden beach of Strandhill . Book in for a surf lesson with the fully female owned surf school Rebelle Surf and conquer the waves as well as the hills on your cycling holiday.
Dublin Bay, Dublin
37km one way | Road and Cycle Paths | 2 hours
Visit the capital and check out all the city’s highlights, as well as some incredible cycling routes. The 37km stretch along Dublin Bay has some steep hills at either end in Dalkey and Howth, while the stretches along the coast are flat throughout.
Enjoy a varied cycle as you make your way from Dalkey, up Killiney Hill and on to Dún Laoghaire. Stop off for a morning coffee and if you’re feeling brave, take a dip at Sandycove Beach , one of the capital’s most scenic swimming spots.
Enjoy North Dublin Bay by bike
Take one of the cycle paths into the city and see ships sail into Dublin Bay as you cross the River Liffey and continue north. The section from Clontarf to Howth is a popular cycle route, so expect to see lots of fellow cyclists exploring Dublin Bay.
Stop for a stroll down the wooden bridge and a coffee at Happy Out Café in Dollymount before jumping back on your bike. Make a detour into St. Anne’s Park with its wide open parkland and quirky follies, and immerse yourself in nature and birdsong with a pitstop at Bull Island , just a stone’s throw from the park. Finish your cycle with one last climb up the steep pitches of Howth and round the day out with a tasty treat of fish and chips down by the pier.
Take in the sights and sounds of Phoenix Park
Add in a few more kilometres to your cycling holiday with a leisurely spin around Phoenix Park . The 10km loop around the outskirts of the park is a great way to see the sights and have a chat with your friends as you go. The fantastic network of bike lanes leads cyclists past Dublin Zoo , Áras an Uachtaráin and the Furry Glen to name but a few.
Ireland’s best bike rides for expert cyclists
Challenge yourself to some of the toughest routes and climbs in the country. Expect to spend time standing out of your saddle as you summit mighty hills on demanding roads and feel the rush of freewheeling down long descents and sweeping bends.
The Wicklow Mountains , Wicklow
100km loop | Road | 6 hours
As any serious cyclist knows, The Wicklow Mountains are full of challenging bike routes that test even the fittest of bike riders, but it’s hard to beat the 100km loop that starts and ends in Russborough House in Blessington . Enjoy the quiet lakeside roads, watching out for rowing clubs training on the lakes before taking on the first significant climb of the day as you approach the Sally Gap.
Onwards to Glendalough
Take a breather at the JB Malone Memorial and gaze out over the dark waters and white sands of Lough Tay. Brace yourself for a breathtaking 15km downhill section through the biking hub of Roundwood and onto majestic Glendalough . Hop off your bike and wander around this historical site, taking in picture perfect views of the lakes. Top up your energy levels with a flat white and a slice of cake at Glendalough Green café, a welcome beacon for cyclists and hikers.
Cycle around the foothills of Lugnaquilla
Two hefty climbs and steep descents follow as you sweep around Lugnaquilla, Ireland’s highest mountain outside of Kerry. The lofty peak is ever present as you sweep around its base and enter the final stretch of the route.
Make your way over a series of shorter climbs back to beautiful Blessington where the team at West Wicklow House have hearty meals waiting. Originally built as an inn for weary travellers, it’s an apt place to visit after climbing 1,670m through the Wicklow Mountains National Park and the perfect way to finish your epic cycle.
Mount Leinster, Wexford and Carlow
136km loop | Road | 5 hours
Expert cyclists flock to Carlow to take on one of the toughest cycles in the country on Mount Leinster, a route that wouldn’t look out of place on the Tour de France. The route is 136km long, but it’s the 6km continuous climb that’s the main attraction here. The climb is both mentally and physically challenging with some serious cyclists choosing to summit the mountain twice, once from each side, on their cycle around the Carlow and Wexford border.
Conquer one of Ireland’s steepest climbs
Set off from Enniscorthy and warm up on the undulating hills, preparing yourself for the challenge ahead. As you pass through Bagenalstown the road turns near vertical as you make for the top of Mount Leinster. With a chunk of determination and good rhythm, you’ll reach the top and have conquered one of the toughest hills in Ireland. The steep descent on country roads is popular with walkers, so take care on the way down.
Explore Enniscorthy
Make your way back to Enniscorthy, or if you still have some energy left in your legs, head to Bunclody and take on Mount Leinster again from the other side. Be warned though, this approach is even tougher with a gradient of 16.3% in some places.
Book a table at The Wilds in Enniscorthy and devour their brunch menu of full Irish breakfasts and gourmet sandwiches from sustainable sources. Spend the rest of your weekend in Enniscorthy and visit Enniscorthy Castle before heading to Monart Destination Spa , treating your aching muscles to some TLC at this five-star resort.
Ring of Kerry , Kerry
169km loop | Road | 11 hours
No cyclist’s guide to Ireland is complete without a mention of the pinnacle of road cycling in Ireland, the Ring of Kerry . The cycle begins and ends in Killarney via a demanding rural cycle on the Iveragh Peninsula, where you’ll remember the stunning coastal views long after your visit.
Experience Kerry’s epic scenery
Marvel at captivating Carrauntoohil as you make your way to the charming village of Killorglin , gazing up in awe at the peaks of the MacGillycuddy Reeks. Make a short detour to Rossbeigh Beach where the mesmerising golden strand fades into the blue of the Atlantic Ocean. The Ring of Kerry cycle continues to hug the rugged coast until you return inland to the colourful town of Kenmare .
See the best of the Iveragh Peninsula
Keep the spirit of adventure going and visit the great explorer’s granddaughter at Tom Crean Brewery . Fill up on a traditional lunch of pork ribs or try their delicious vegan pizza, hop back on your bike and get ready for the biggest climb of the day as you make your way towards Killarney National Park .
The inspirational views of Muckross Lake and Lough Leane give cyclists the final boost they need as they return to Killarney, almost 170km later. Make a reservation at popular Quinlan’s Seafood Bar and savour fresh, seasonal seafood to celebrate finishing one of Ireland’s best cycles.

County Cork,
Cycling on the Beara Peninsula
Pat O'Donnell
Galway city to spiddal, county galway.
“This route is about 40km in length, travelling from the outskirts of Galway city on the Clifden Road to Moycullen, and then taking a left in the village. There is a climb, but once you’ve conquered this, it’s plain sailing. Travelling along this road towards Spiddal, you’ll eventually see the Cliffs of Moher to the right across the bay. On a clear day, the Aran Islands will appear on the horizon just before you head down into Spiddal village. Stop here for a coffee or a bite to eat in the crafts centre, pick up a souvenir, pop it in the backpack and then it’s homeward bound back to Galway city.”
The Derroura Mountain Bike trail, County Galway
“Just west of Oughterard, the Derroura trail is 16km of Connemara landscape, which is looked after by Coillte (the organisation that manages and maintains the forest walks and trails around Ireland). Park the car at the forest entrance next to Lough Bofin, and then it’s climbing all the way to the mast at Knocklettefore. It’s worthwhile, though, as when you get to the top, the views of the lakes are amazing. Take a breather and then it’s downhill all the way until you get to the boardwalks, where you’re directed back to the parking lot.”
Beara Peninsula, County Kerry/Cork
“This is a challenging route but the scenery is beautiful and it’s around 195km in full, depending on what route you take. It’s best to base yourself in Kenmare in County Kerry, and make your way back to base after each stint. Of all the trails, you have to take in the spectacular Healy Pass, with its views across Bantry Bay and the Kenmare River. Once over the top, which is 300m high, it’s about 30km back into Kenmare. En route, pop into the villages of Glengarriff and Eyeries, or take the ferry with your bike from Castletownbere to Bere Island and continue your cycle there.”
County Fermanagh,
Cycling in County Fermanagh
Nicola Brady , travel writer
The mourne mountains.
"Between us cyclists, there’s a lot of buzz about the Mourne Mountains. The heather and moss-covered peaks are the epitome of Irish countryside, and inspired CS Lewis to create the magical land of Narnia (in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe ). The Mournes have plenty of cycle trails, such as the Rostrevor Route (27km), which gives wonderful views of Rostrevor Forest, the Mourne Mountains and Carlingford Lough. It begins and ends in the picturesque town of Rostrevor and can be a long cycle with some steep sections, but it will definitely be worth it."
The North West Cycle Trail, County Fermanagh/County Tyrone
“There are amazing cycling routes in Fermanagh. As part of the North West Trail, you pass through lakelands and castles as you thread your way through the county. It's one of the best-kept secrets around here. The North West Cycle Trail is a 325km loop taking in sights such as Castle Coole, the Marble Arch Caves and the Ulster American Folk Park, depending on which segment you take. For a day trip, push off from Strabane's landmark sculpture, Let the Dance Begin, in County Tyrone, which is perched on the Donegal/Tyrone border, and pick up the distinctive North West Trail for a day trip. The route will take you along flat, fast rolling back roads, eventually ending up in the market town of Enniskillen.”
Winding country roads, tiny villages and bustling towns and cities make up many of Ireland’s cycle trails. Not to mention the surrounding scenery of mountains, lakes and coastlines. “Cycle tracks will abound in Utopia,” HG Wells said, but we’ll happily take Ireland’s on our way there.

Annascaul and the Dingle Peninsula
Your guides will greet you at your Dublin Hotel for a transfer out west, through the rolling midlands to the wild and mountainous coast. Set off on our opening ride after a safety talk and lunch in a traditional Irish pub, winding our way around the many small roads called boreens that characterize the southern coast of the Dingle peninsula. Pass beautiful coves and castle ruins before rolling into the quintessential Irish village of Dingle. We’ll get right into it with tonight’s private brewery tour!
Meals : Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Dublin, Dingle Accomplished : 13 miles / 21 km, elevation gain: 968 feet / 295 meters Longer Option : 22 miles / 35 km, elevation gain: 2,378 feet / 725 meters Accommodations: Dingle Benners Hotel or Green Mount House
Soda Bread and Slea Head
Following a relaxed Irish breakfast, we hit the road to explore the beautiful Dingle Peninsula. This is Gaeltacht country where the Irish language is still widely spoken as a first language and culture and traditions remain strong. Our ride takes us west past a fascinating array of ancient sites including Iron Age forts, beehive huts, inscribed stones, and historical churches. The Peninsula culminates at the dramatic Slea Head—Europe’s most western point. After lunch, we’ll try our hand at one of these traditions as we learn to bake Irish soda bread. This evening, there is time to explore the charms of Dingle Town itself, including its traditional music scene before heading out for a dinner at a celebrated seafood restaurant.
Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Slea Head, Ballyferiter Accomplished : 26 miles / 42 km, elevation gain: 1,000 feet / 305 meters Longer Option : 34 miles / 55 km, elevation gain: 1,312 feet / 400 meters Accommodations: Dingle Benners Hotel or Green Mount House
From the Gap of Dunloe to Lakes of Killarney
Today we hit all the highlights, including the Gap of Dunloe, a private boat journey across Lough Leane with a local legend, a 15th-century castle, and a National Park. After an hour-long transfer, our ride begins on the Ivearagh Peninsula, dominated by Magillycuddy’s Reeks—Ireland’s highest mountain range, also known as “the black stacks.” Pass through the iconic Gap of Dunloe, a narrow rocky opening in the heart of the peninsula that leads to the shores of Lough Leane. A memorable boat journey carries us through Killarney National Park to the front door of Ross Castle, poised on the Lakes of Killarney. From here, it’s only a short walk to your Killarney hotel.
Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Gap of Dunloe, Killarney Accomplished : 29 miles / 47 km, elevation gain: 1,781 feet / 543 meters Longer Option : 59 miles / 95 km, elevation gain: 2,198 feet / 670 meters Accommodations: The Great Southern Killarney
Conquering the Ring of Kerry
Departing Killarney, we embark on the most challenging climb of the week. Through groves of twisted oaks, the road rises past the spectacular Ladie’s View to Moll’s Gap. Behind us is yesterday’s conquered Killarney National Park; on the other side of the gap lies one long descent to the south side of the peninsula and the picture-perfect village of Kenmare. We’ll arrive in time for the farmers market that fills the square every Wednesday with local crafts and delicacies. Tonight, choose from a wide range of top-notch restaurants in this renowned foodie village.
Meals : Breakfast / Lunch Destinations : Moll’s Gap, Kenmare Accomplished : 24 miles / 38 km, elevation gain: 1,250 feet / 381 meters Longer Option : 31 miles / 50 km, elevation gain: 1,250 feet / 381 meters Accommodations: Sheen Falls Lodge
The Beara Peninsula
Our final ride follows an easygoing route through the Caha mountains. We’ll bike into some idyllic countryside on virtually traffic-free roads—this peninsula is the least known in Kerry and truly a hidden gem. Stop for lunch at a quaint stone cottage with fantastic views and fill up on hearty, traditional fare. As we loop back to the hotel, hop off the bikes for a visit to a French chocolatier. An afternoon pick-me-up comes in the form of Benoit’s finest confections, and we’ll even have the chance to craft our own chocolates. This evening, join us for a farewell dinner and toast to a week of accomplishments over a bounty of local ingredients.
Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Bonane Accomplished : 18 miles / 29 km, elevation gain: 1,178 feet / 359 meters Accommodations: Sheen Falls Lodge
Farewell to Ireland

It’s the biggest day in the saddle and the most varied with the initial bogland giving way to rising mountain peaks as the day wears on. There’s a perfect stop halfway at the picturesque village of Leenane on the shores of the Killary fjord. Here you can enjoy lunch at your leisure, taking in the dramatic scenery of the mountains plunging into the sea. You might also consider joining a wool-spinning demonstration at the Sheep and Wool Centre . Learn the history of the local woollen industry and observe how the sheep's wool is made into yarn and cloth. In the afternoon you'll skirt the banks of Lough Nafooey before turning north again through the remote village of Tourmakeady with its beautiful waterfall tucked away in a cleft in the hills. Before and After Your Trip
Dublin, Ireland
While there is an endless amount of things to see in Ireland as a whole, the friendly capital city of Dublin is a destination that can't be missed! Here are but a few suggestions for spending an enjoyable time in this thriving, historical city: spend a few days in downtown Dublin listening to live music in the buzzing Temple Bar district; visit Trinity College’s Old Library, which houses the famous Book of Kells; view Ireland’s visual history at the National Photographic Archives; enjoy distillery tours, such as the Guinness Storehouse and the Old Jameson Distillery. Dublin's dining and entertainment is legendary, from the boozy delights of Temple Bar to more cultured nights at the theater to dining in one of the city's fine eateries including five one-star Michelin restaurants and one two-star eatery. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel:

Galway, Ireland
Galway City is a thriving, cultural city on the western coast of Ireland. Along with being a popular seaside destination with beautiful beaches and long winding promenade, it also has a buzzing cosmopolitan city center. The city is a joy to explore with its labyrinthine cobbled streets, colorful shop facades, and busy café and bar culture. Consider a visit to Galway City Museum, the National Aquarium, or the Town Hall Theater for the latest dramatic performance. The clean beaches in Salthill draw crowds of swimmers and the city streets come to life with buskers and street performers. You’ll find plenty to do at night in Galway, whether it's pub life, traditional music, late night clubs, or simply soaking up the vibe on the bustling city streets! The unspoilt Burren region across Galway Bay in Clare is also worth a visit. The weathered limestone landscape holds traces of the past with megalithic tombs, ring forts, cairns, holy wells, and stone walls scattered throughout the area to explore. We recommend the following accommodations for your post-trip hotel:

Sligo’s Yeats Country Single Centre Bike Tour – FAQ’s
Below you will find the answer to some of the most commonly asked questions about this tour. For other more general FAQ’s please visit our FAQ page .
Who is this tour suitable for?
This tour is suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. The distances you cycle each day are relatively short. Typically 30 – 50 km (18 – 32 miles). As this is a single centre bike tour where you will be returning to the same location each evening it is possible to shorten these distances even further. The routes are hilly. For this reason we recommend using and electric bike.
Do I need to be a regular cyclist?
It is important that you are competent cyclist (as distinct from a fit cyclist) with adequate bicycle handling ability and a proper knowledge of the rules of the road. It is not recommended that you book a cycling holiday unless you have cycled at least occasionally before you arrive.
Will I be cycling along with others?
Possibly – but this is not guaranteed. At busy times of the year June/July/August is is quite likely (but again not guaranteed) that others will be following the same routes as you. In the quieter months when numbers are smaller it is quite possible that yours will be the only group on the road at that time.
Is this tour on cycle paths or public roads?
For the vast majority of this tour you are on roads that are also open to traffic. However as we focus on small back roads the traffic is almost non-existent in most places. There are some short stretches on roads with moderate traffic. However even here cycling is not difficult. From Sligo city centre it is quite a short distance to cycle until you are on quiet country roads.
Are the routes hilly?
The routes on this bike tour are hilly. Apart from a few short sections very little of this tour is flat. Some sections are more hilly than others. The gradient varies constantly from gentle to very steep. For this reason we recommend using an electric bike for this tour.
How do I get to the start?
This bike tour us based in Sligo. It has regular direct bus connections to Dublin Airport where most people arrive into Ireland. There are also direct connections to Ireland West (Knock) Airport. To see links to websites with more information and timetables click on the “Getting Here” tab above.

Walking and cycling ‘take 680,000 cars off road daily’ in Ireland’s five largest cities
Over 70% of dublin residents walk or wheel at least five days a week, up from 64% in 2021, notes national transport authority survey.

Walking, cycling and wheeling take 680,000 cars off the road every day in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick-Shannon and Waterford, according to the largest survey of active travel in urban areas.
The index, delivered by the National Transport Authority (NTA) in collaboration with local authorities suggests in the five metropolitan areas, more than half of adults walk five or more days a week, while at least 15 per cent cycle once a week. Approximately one in two residents want to walk or wheel more, with wheeling referring to use of wheeled mobility aids such as wheelchairs or strollers.
A third would like to cycle more, though a gender gap in cycling featured across all metropolitan areas, with men much more likely to cycle.
The findings indicate a high level of support for more Government spending on walking and wheeling, ranging from 74 per cent in Dublin to 68 per cent in Waterford. A similar level of support for spending on cycling was found, ranging from 77 to 61 per cent. This contrasts with support for more spending on driving ranging from 40 to 24 per cent.

Cillian Murphy: ‘Moving home from London was the best thing we did’
Some 71 per cent of Dublin residents walk or wheel at least five days a week, up from 64 per cent in 2021.
The index drawn up by Sustrans uses a model to understand costs and benefits of driving, walking, wheeling and cycling, factoring in travel time, vehicle operating costs, health benefits, air quality and taxation. It is the first time it has been compiled beyond Dublin. More than 1,100 people over 16 were surveyed in each of the cities. Active travel saved 160,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions across the cities, equivalent to a passenger taking 2,200,000 flights from Dublin to London.
Asked what would help them walk or wheel more, they cited better footpath surfaces including dropped kerbs at crossing points; more parks and green spaces close to home, and nicer places along streets to stop and rest.
Residents gave similar answers on what would help them cycle more – infrastructural improvements such as traffic-free paths through parks or greenways, signed cycle routes along quieter streets, and cycle tracks along roads physically separated from traffic and pedestrians. There was strong support for building tracks even if it meant less room for other traffic – ranging from 88 to 69 per cent.
NTA chief executive Anne Graham said the authority was working with local authorities to deliver safe pedestrian and cycle infrastructure that encourages more people to engage in active travel.
[ The Debate: Will the traffic plan for Dublin improve life in the city? ]
“It’s clear from the latest walking and cycling Index that more people in Ireland’s five largest cities want to cycle and walk each day. By encouraging people to make active travel a part of their daily journey, we can all play our part in creating a more sustainable future. The NTA will continue to accelerate our efforts to roll out walking and cycling infrastructure in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Waterford and other areas across Ireland,” she added.
Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan said the shift was clear and it was helping to create more sustainable and accessible cities and to improve wellbeing.

With continued investment “we can help encourage even more people in our cities to choose to walk, wheel or cycle within their communities. This gives us the opportunity to also reimagine our cities as safer, cleaner places that are designed around the needs of people, not just cars,” he said.

Ten of the best cycling holidays for 2024
2024 is set to be one of those cycling mega-years. On top of the usual three professional Grand Tours – in France, Spain, and Italy – and the World Championships in Switzerland, a summer Olympics (also in France) will be thrown in, for an extra sprinkle of fairy dust.
The Tour of Britain’s future still hangs in the balance, but across Europe and around the world, professional and amateur cyclists are gearing up for another 12 months of hairpin corners and steep ascents.
If the cycling bug hasn’t already bitten you, then 2024 might be the year it finally latches on. From Wales to the Arctic, we’ve selected ten of the best cycling holidays to whet your ravenous appetite, including serious cycles for the Mamils and Mawils, and gentle pootles for the easy riders, too.
Cycle the Cotswolds
New for 2024, this Oxford to Bath guided bike tour starts in the city of dreaming spires and ends with curved rows of honeystone Georgian buildings.
On the way you’ll take in villages such as Bibury, described by William Morris as the most beautiful in England, and Bampton, where scenes from Downton Abbey were filmed. Famed for its rolling hills and centuries-old pubs, the route also weaves through Bourton-on-the-Water, the Venice of the Cotswolds.
Exodus Adventure Travels ’ (020 8772 3743) new six-day tour starts at £2,099 per person, including bed and breakfast accommodation and a trip leader throughout.
Brecon Beacons and beyond
If you like the idea of carrying all your own gear and travelling under your own steam, then Roam Bikepacking offers something slightly different. It will equip you with a bike, saddlebags, a tent and sleeping bag, allowing you to get fully off road and into the wild.
Its new tour for 2024 will see guests take on Gospel Pass, Wales’s highest road, and Devil’s Staircase – one of Britain’s toughest climbs, reaching a maximum gradient of 20 per cent. They’ll also tell you about the best places to wild camp and swim.
Roam Bikepacking (07967 870654) can organise this four-day tour for £425 per person (camping) or £550 (B&B).
One for the road in France
2024 is set to be a vintage year for cycling in France. Not only will it host the annual Tour but also the summer Olympics. But while the pros will be powered by sports drinks and protein shakes, how about a leisurely amble around Champagne and Burgundy – two of Europe’s great wine-growing regions.
Highlights of this new tour include a visit to Notre Dame Cathedral in Reims, and a tasting at the Côte des Blancs wine estate. The laid-back route also takes in historic Dijon, the charming capital of Burgundy.
Exodus Adventure Travels (020 8772 3743) offers a seven-day tour from £4,399 per person, including flights, half-board accommodation, bike hire and a trip leader. Departures on June 23, July 14 and Sept 15 2024.
Midnight sun in Norway’s Lofoten Islands
This new self-guided cycling holiday explores one of northern Europe’s most spectacular and isolated regions, the Lofoten Archipelago. The route takes in deserted beaches and tiny fishing villages. If you’re really lucky, you might spot a white-tailed eagle.
Head north between the end of May and mid-July and the sun won’t set at all. Your bright nights will be spent in seaside lodges and red fishermen’s cabins. As for fuel: booze certainly won’t be cheap, but there will be plenty of local cheese and stockfish dumplings.
Headwater (01606 720199) is offering this new self-guided trip between June and August from £3,419 per person, including flights, accommodation, bike hire, and meals.
Discover the rural patchwork of Poland
Poland, you say? It’s not a country that many would associate with a cycling holiday, but then again, few operators share the vision of The Slow Cyclist, renowned for its off-the-beaten-track adventures.
This new tour kicks off in May and takes in Poland’s Lower Silesia region, bordering Germany and northern Czechia. By day, you’ll pass castles, forests and extinct volcanoes, but at night there’s plenty of time for Polish wine – the country is home to 400 vineyards – and nutritious hearty local food. Silesia is best known for its poppyseed cakes.
The Slow Cyclist (01865 410356) is offering a new four-night trip from £2,290 per person, based on travelling as a group of 12, including airport transfers, a support vehicle, and English-speaking guides.
Train like a pro in the French Alps
Aimed at serious cyclists, this week-long training camp based out of Morzine – host of the Tour de France on more than 20 occasions – is probably as close to riding professionally as you can get.
This “holiday” includes a private chef, daily massages, and a support vehicle. You’ll also receive a pre-camp training plan and an all-inclusive drinks package for the evenings. But don’t overdo it – the cycling will be tough. You’ll climb over 40,000 feet in a week. One of the climbs, the Col de la Pierre Carrée, is considered among the toughest in the world.
Sa Calobra Cycling Club (0033 688 699 160) is running this seven-night holiday between June 28 and July 5 2024 and costs from £2,208 per person.
A long weekend in Italy’s Dolomites
This is a convenient cycling holiday for people who don’t fancy spending a whole week in the saddle. Rather than moving each night, you’ll be based in a four-star lakeside hotel, in the village of Alleghe.
Each day ride comes in three options, offering mighty climbs for experienced col baggers, or more relaxed jaunts for the beginners. Epic scenery is, however, guaranteed for all. Day four tackles Marmolada, the highest mountain in the Dolomites.
Marmot Tours (01373 830409) offers four-night tours for £1,350 per person this July and August. Airport transfers and half-board accommodation are included, so too is wine with dinner.
Explore Ireland’s south coast
Cycle from Kerry to Cork on this new self-guided eight-day tour, which explores the green and hilly backroads of Ireland’s glorious south. Highlights include the forests and coasts around Clonakilty, and the Drombeg Stone Circle: 17 standing stones that date back 2,000 years.
An evening spent in the coastal town of Kinsale gives riders the option to visit James’s Fort, the ruins of a 17th-century fortress. The final day’s riding passes the Royal Cork Yacht Club, purportedly the world’s oldest.
Saddle Skedaddle (0191 265 1110) will run this new tour between April and October and it costs from £1,445 per person, including bed and breakfast accommodation, luggage transfers and digital route notes.
An e-bike tour of southern Japan
Explore the mountainous splendour of Shikoku, the smallest of Japan’s main islands, on a Yamaha e-bike tour, which covers 240 miles in a week. Following sections of the car-free Shimanami Kaido cycling trail, you’ll hop between the smaller islands of the Seto Inland Sea via five suspension bridges.
After touring the Shikoku temple pilgrimage route – comprising 88 sacred sites – your evenings will include sake tastings and soaks in onsens (hot springs). Add-on excursions to Hiroshima and Kyoto can be arranged at the start and end of the tour.
Freedom Treks (01273 977968) offers this holiday in March, April and May. Prices start from £3,757 and include accommodation, meals and a local guide.
Ride across America
The Big Daddy of cycling holidays, this 67-night expedition will cross one of the planet’s greatest nations, and takes in the Rocky Mountains, Yellowstone National Park and the Great Plains.
On this 4,000-mile journey between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans you’ll average 67 miles a day, with a rest day every 10. The comfort, company, and security of a group will make it extra special. 2024 is a US Presidential Election year, so expect plenty to talk about.
Bike Adventures (01273 413489) is running a TransAm tour between July 14 and Sept 18, including a tour leader, support vehicle and accommodation, costing £10,395 per person.

When is Ramadan 2024 and how is the moon sighted?
Following the sighting of the moon, Saudi Arabia has announced that the first day of fasting will be Monday, March 11.
Following the sighting of the crescent by the moon-sighting committee, Saudi Arabia has announced that the first day of fasting will be Monday, March 11.
Ramadan is determined by the Islamic lunar calendar, which begins with the sighting of the crescent moon. Saudi Arabia and other Muslim-majority countries rely on the testimonies of moon sighters to determine the start of the month.

Algeria inaugurates world’s third-largest mosque ahead of ramadan, biden says agreement reached for ceasefire during ramadan, gaza ceasefire talks fail to make breakthrough with ramadan approaching, how is the ramadan moon sighted.
For the moon to be visible, the crescent must set after the sun. This allows the sky to be dark enough to spot the small slither of the new moon.
After the sun sets on the night of March 10, 29th of Shaaban month in the Hijri calendar, moon sighters face west with a clear view of the horizon for a first glimpse of the crescent moon.
In Saudi Arabia, testimonies of people who have spotted the moon are recorded and the Supreme Court makes a decision on when Ramadan should begin.
The moon phases of Ramadan
Lunar months last between 29 and 30 days, depending on the sighting of the new moon on the 29th night of each month. If the new moon is not visible, the month lasts 30 days.
Why is Ramadan holy?
Muslims believe that Ramadan is the month in which the first verses of the Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad more than 1,400 years ago.
Throughout the month, observing Muslims fast from just before the sunrise prayer, Fajr, to the sunset prayer, Maghrib.
The fast entails abstinence from eating, drinking, smoking, and sexual relations to achieve greater “taqwa”, or consciousness of God.
Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, along with the Muslim declaration of faith, daily prayers, charity, and performing the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca if physically and financially capable.
In many Muslim-majority countries, working hours are reduced, and most restaurants are closed during fasting hours
How do you wish someone for Ramadan?
Various Muslim-majority nations have a personalised greeting in their native languages. “Ramadan Mubarak” and “Ramadan Kareem” are common greetings exchanged in this period, wishing the recipient a blessed and generous month, respectively.
When is Eid al-Fitr?
At the end of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr. In Arabic, it means “festival of breaking the fast”.
Depending on the new moon sighting, Eid al-Fitr, which lasts three days, will likely start on April 10 or 11.
