Lying off the southeast coast of Africa, Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world, home to a unique ecological environment. The island split off from the ancient landform of Gondwana some 88 million years ago and has since remained an isolated landmass. This has resulted in the spectacular biodiversity for which Madagascar has become known, with an astonishing 90% of its wildlife unique to the island. Similarly, 80% of the island’s plant life is found nowhere else in the world. Governed by France until 1960, it has a population of 22 million and a landmass approaching 600,000 square kilometres, so it is relatively sparsely populated with a rich mix of ethnic groups.

Due to its unique flora and fauna, Madagascar safari holidays are particularly special. Around 10% of its area is designated as a protected natural reserve. It has 21 national parks of which six – Andohahela, Andringitra, Marojejy, Masoala, Zahamena and Ranomafana – have been jointly awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Among the Madagascar wildlife, there is no big game such as elephant or lion, but you will find lemurs here and nowhere else. This is a broad family of mammals, from the smallest mouse lemur to larger Indri lemurs. There is also an astonishing variety of amphibians and reptiles, with all sorts of chameleons and geckos, many of which are only found here.

Madagascar safari tours take place on a different scale to those on mainland Africa. With no large predators here, the smaller animal inhabitants have been allowed to flourish. This means that safari tour guides can allow you out of the jeep and into the forest to experience the natural world first hand. This makes it a great destination for families with lots of hands-on activities available to fascinate the children.

When your Madagascar wildlife safari is complete, you can enjoy some of the many other charms of this fascinating island. The capital, Antananarivo, is a rich tapestry of paddy fields and buildings from the country’s colonial past. With scents of jacaranda rising from Lake Anosy in the city centre, the capital also treats the senses with its cuisine, a mix of local specialities and French influences.

Madagascar Safari Travel Seasons

  • Jul – Aug  – High Season. Winter means balmy weather during the day and cooler nights. It can be much colder in the highlands.
  • Apr to Jun, Sep to Dec  – Shoulder Season is an ideal time for Madagascar safaris as the weather is warm and there are fewer tourists. There will be rain about and this can close some of the national parks in November (opening again in June).
  • Jan – Mar – Low Season. Rainy season with the possibilty of cyclones, the east coast is more likely to bear the brunt of bad weather. If you are hardy enough there are some great discounts to be had.

Luxury & Private Madagascar Safaris

Madagascar, a premier destination for private safaris, offers the intrepid wildlife-lover who’s been everywhere on mainland Africa, a wholly unique safari experience with abundant plant and animal life found nowhere else on Earth. While the island sits just over 300 miles from Mozambique ’s coast, it’s a wholly unique safari experience with abundant plant and animal life found nowhere else on Earth. Ultra luxury camps and lodges are not the main focus in Madagascar, but what you sacrifice in creature comforts, you more than make up for in unique experiences and adventure.

Spanning over 220,000 square miles, travelers will find steep escarpments with lush tropical forests, expansive central highlands of fertile rice valleys and grassy hills, desert, shrub-lands, mangrove forests and sandy beaches. At once alien and enchanting, the island’s diverse landscape is of intrigue to all visitors. That said, the real highlight is the island’s unique wildlife . Life has been left to develop in relative isolation here, making it a biodiversity hotspot. Over 90% of its flora and fauna is found nowhere else on Earth, including one of the world’s largest lemurs , the Indri. The island is home to over 100 species and sub-species of lemur altogether.

Madagascar’s Capital and Culture

Madagascar is a big country, and the 4th largest island in the world. It’s capital, Antananarivo (a.k.a. Tana), lies in the country’s center. Though we like Tana as an introduction to Malagasy culture and history, this city has notoriously terrible traffic and is most commonly used as a jumping off point between wildlife locations elsewhere in the country.

From Tana, you will look to the far reaches of the country’s circumference to find the most iconic points of interest. But accessing these far away areas can prove to be a challenge, in large part due to the national airline (Tsaradia) being unreliable, and the roads unmaintained. We find the best way to explore Madagascar is by incorporating charter flights (either scheduled or private), in order to eliminate long stretches of bumpy road or uncertain flight schedules. Of course, the cost of a chartered flight is higher than driving or flying on the national carrier, so we can work with you to shape the best itinerary for your budget, interests, and time frame.

Explore Madagascar’s Diverse Regions

Apart from Tana in the center, we can look at Madagascar in 4 areas: East, South, West, North & Islands.

  • East Islands – Here you will find highland forests, which are very wet. Enjoy viewing an incredible number of unique animals while exploring parks such as Andasibe, Mantadia , and Masoala.
  • South Islands – Isalo National Park boasts beautiful hilly and rocky landscapes, offering plenty of opportunity for hiking. Beyond this, we adore both Madagascar Classic Collection camps and areas. Mandrare River Camp is a safari-style camp through and through with proper tented camps and the fully inclusive lifestyle we safari-goes have become accustomed to. The spiny forest, salty Lake Anony, opportunity for cultural interaction, and incredible array of wildlife make this location unique. It’s sister camp, Manafiafy Beach & Rainforest Lodge, offers excellent birding and rainforest species on a stunning stretch of private beach.
  • West Islands – The west is fairly dry compared to the rest of the country. Within this region you will find incredibly diverse landscapes ranging from the rugged Tsingy de Bemaraha Nature Reserve , to the iconic Avenue of the Baobabs.
  • North Islands – Head north for more incredible biodiversity, found in such parks as Ankarana and Montagne d’Ambre. Anjajavy (Relais & Chateaux), located in the north-west, provides an array of experiences from it’s beach-side setting, including wildlife encounters, exploration of diverse nearby landscapes, and cultural interaction. Lastly, it is off Madagascar’s northern tip that you will find the famous Nosy Be Archipelago, home to many gorgeous islands and some of the countries more luxurious lodges. This beach destination would be the perfect way to end a wildlife-focused itinerary, for those want incredible scuba diving opportunities, or simply to get some R&R

Madagascar Travel Tips From Our Experts

  • Madagascar is vast, and has so much to offer. Instead of tacking it on to your traditional safari as an extension, think of it as a stand-alone destination. You’ll thank us later.
  • Avenue of the Baobabs can get busy around June-Oct. Beat the crowds by seeing baobabs at Mandrare or Anjajavy instead!
  • This destination is for the adventurous traveler who is OK waking up to a frog in your toilet, and bumping around on potholed roads.
  • Try the romazava  (a ginger-flavored meat and vegetable stew) and  ravitoto  (shredded manioc leaves with fried bread and coconut).

Is Madagascar the Right Destination for You?

People who want adventure and unique wildlife will love Madagascar.

It’s ideal for travelers who want to get outdoors and out of the car. The island offers diverse hiking options from rocky, arid landscapes to lush tropical forests, kayaking and canoeing through mangrove forests, and more. The island is best seen and explored through hands-on activities that get you moving.

Madagascar is also a unique destination for wildlife-enthusiasts who don’t mind skipping the big game of mainland Africa. You won’t find wildebeest and lion here, but you will find a biodiversity hotspot with animals found nowhere else on the planet. Particularly for travelers who want to see lemurs, Madagascar is the top choice .

Best Time to Visit Madagascar

Madagascar’s climate is generally tropical with varying amounts of rainfall. Coastal areas tend to be hot throughout the year with much more moderate temperatures in the central, elevated regions.

In general, the best time to travel is April/May and September/October, on the shoulders of the the cool and dry winter months (May to October). June to August are good for weather but tend to get busier with tourists. During this time the central highlands, which include Antananarivo , can get cold and windy.

Madagascar can experience cyclones and extreme rain from January to March, so these summer months should be avoided. The roads can become impassable in these conditions.

How Much Does a Trip to Madagascar Cost?

As a safari destination, Madagascar offers exclusive accommodation in remote areas though the average lodge cost is less expensive than Tanzania or South Africa . That said, we recommend including charter flights for internal transport, which drives the cost back up to typical mainland safari costs.

You can expect prices as low as $500 or upwards of $1000 (per person per night), dependent on season, accommodation, type of internal transportation, and individual needs/preferences.

Our Favorite Areas in Madagascar

Madagascar packs a lot of diversity into one island, and we love exploring corner to corner. Some of our highlights include: Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, the coastal rainforest reserve of Sainte Luce, Isalo and Ranomafana National Parks, and Anjajvy Forest and Ankarana Reserves.

Things to Know About Madagascar

  • Luxury & Private Safaris in Madagascar: If luxury is at the top of your list, Madagascar might not be the best fit. While the country has a handful of luxury lodges, accommodations tend to be fairly basic – clean and comfortable, but not 5*.
  • Activities in Madagascar: Many of the activities in Madagascar are outside the vehicle – hiking , night walks , cycling , kayaking , you name it. For travelers with limited mobility, this should be considered when choosing Madagascar as a destination. Additionally, the bumpy roads will not be comfortable for anyone who suffers from back pain. That said, a select few properties can assist travelers with mobility issues, and provide a great experience (including the opportunity to see lemurs). These select properties are some of the country’s most upmarket options, only accessible by charter.

What to Do in Madagascar?

Guided hikes through rainforests , karst rock pinnacles, and towering baobabs are one of our favorite ways to explore and get to know the island. Canoeing and kayaking through the waterways is another great option when you’re ready to rest your legs without leaving nature. With a mix of driving and flying you get to see the country from both perspectives.

Wildlife in Madagascar

Lemurs are the most popular among visitors, with over 100 sub/species calling the island home. You’ll also find unique mammals such as the cat-like fossa, and the planet’s smallest-known chameleon (plus 2/3 of the world’s total chameleons). Birders will delight in the over 300 species found here, while humpback whales, sea turtles and aye-aye (type of lemur) all call the island (or its waters) home as well.

Let us help you plan a bespoke trip of a lifetime for you.

A woman sitting on a bench holding a glass of beer.

Madagascar – also known as the ‘great red island’ is reckoned by scientists to be a living laboratory of evolution. The world’s fourth-largest island is home to a kaleidoscope of rare species of lemurs, primates, chameleons and birds. If you’ve seen the movie ‘Madagascar’, you’ll know just how endearing lemurs can be. They’re the superstars of Madagascar, with many different species to look out for.

The Malagasy people are renowned for their friendliness – whether you’re in a city or a tiny village, you’ll be made to feel welcome. They have a fascinating cultural heritage, with Arabic, Indian and African influences present in the language, food, and music.

With a diverse topography of terraced rice fields, natural wonders, untouched rainforests, unique geology, jagged coastlines, pristine beaches, and giant baobabs, there’s no shortage of sites to see in Madagascar.

ANTANANARIVO

Located in the center of the island on a rocky ridge, Antananarivo is the biggest city in the country with approximately 1,4 million inhabitants. Founded in 1625 by King Andrianjaka, Antananarivo was already a major city before the colonial era. The city is a mass of buildings including Royal palaces, the French residency, the Anglican and Roman Catholic cathedrals, several stone churches, as well as schools, hospitals, courts of justice, and other government buildings. The streets around the market are always colorful and crowded.

Tips to consider when planning your Madagascar Tour

Chameleons on Madagascar tours

A Madagascar tour or safari is a unique experience – even within the contact of a myriad of memorable experiences in Africa. Over the years we’ve noticed that there are some common misconceptions about Madagascar which I’ll address in this article.

Madagascar is not for everyone . If you really like good quality accommodation, expect a holiday to unfold exactly as the brochure says and have difficulty coping with change, then perhaps a Madagascar tour is not for you.

However if you have a spirit of adventure. Welcome the unexpected, and are willing to accept some irritations and rustic conditions. Then Madagascar with its pristine flora and extra-ordinary wildlife, could be the perfect safari holiday for you. We recommend that you visit at least two to three of its distinct climatic & floral zones to get the most from a Madagascar tour.

Malagasy people on Natural Madagascar safari and beach tour

Type of accommodation in Madagascar

Unlike many countries in Southern Africa, there really isn’t that much choice in terms of accommodation in Madagascar. Except in the beach resorts of Nosy Be and Ile Sainte Marie. The accommodation is reasonable but usually not of a very high standard. Even a so-called five star resort is not to be compared with a five star hotel elsewhere in Africa. Or the Indian Ocean Islands. We try to tell it as it is in our proposals. So that there are no surprises when you are on your Madagscar safari. So read our comments thoroughly!

Having said that, Nosy Be and Ile Sainte Marie do offer a higher standard of hotel. So this is where you can upgrade your accommodation to offset the more modest lodges elsewhere.

Cost of a Madagascar Tour

Some clients are under the impression that because the hotel standard is not high, the cost of a Madagascar safari or holiday will be moderate. Unfortunately this is not really the case. Though it is not one of the most expensive safari destinations in Africa. (Botswana takes that prize). It is not cheap either.

There are a variety of reasons for this:

  • The international flight to Madagascar is expensive (due to lack of competition). Basically its almost as much as flying to London. Be warned!
  • Madagascar is a huge country. And so domestic flights between Tana and other towns are relatively expensive. Given that most people want to experience the diversity of Madagascar’s flora and fauna, you’ll usually visit 3 or 4 different regions. So this adds to the transport cost.
  • The hotels and lodges are priced in Euros.

English-speaking guide or not?

One factor which has a big influence on the cost is whether you take a private English-speaking guide. Our prices DO include an English-speaking guide.

If you choose a more basic tour, your hotel and regional transfers are with a local driver who will not speak much, if any, English. This is fine if you speak a little French (which is a common language in Madagascar). Or if you are looking for a good price. But it could be frustrating if you want to ask your driver about something that you’ve seen en route. However when you get to the National Park such as Andasibe, you always join up with the English-speaking park rangers. As they are the ONLY ones who are allowed to guide in the National Parks.

Naturally we recommend an English-speaking private guide. It’s more than the basic tour but in exchange you have much more flexibility. And you will learn so much more about the wildlife and sights of Madagascar.

When to visit Madagascar?

The west and northwest are year-round destinations but mid January to March is cyclone season on the east coast. The eastern rainforests have a high rainfall. So the best times for a Madagascar tour are the drier months of May onwards or September to December.

Fitness Levels

Another thing to bear in mind is that ideally you should be reasonably fit. You experience Madagascar’s flora and fauna mainly by walking the forest trails, sometimes for a few hours. And sometimes in hilly terrain (optional). If this is a problem for you, you need to let us know when planning your Madagascar safari.

Can you include the beach on a Madagascar tour?

Some clients want to combine Mauritius with Madagascar. Though this is perfectly possible, we recommend enjoying the Malagasy beaches instead. Many visitors tack on some days of relaxation at the end, at Nosy Be or Ile Sainte Marie with their gorgeous tropical beaches.

Nosy Be is the largest of several beautiful islands off the northwest coast. This ‘Perfumed Isle’ is alive with the smells of vanilla, ylang-ylang and coffee. The bustling island markets are full of embroidered white lace, colourful sarongs and wooden carvings. The more active can enjoy diving and snorkelling off the coral reefs. Or perhaps an excursion to Nosy Komba and Nosy Tanikely.

Alternatively the Isle of Tsarabanjina matches the Seychelles for stunning island beauty. A palm-fringed desert island with lapping azure blue waters.

Northern Madagascar

Ile Sainte Marie

Ile Sainte Marie is 50km long and 7km at its widest point. The only real town is Ambodifotatra – other small villages comprise bamboo and palm huts. The island is almost universally known as Sainte Marie. And it’s almost a cliché of a tropical island with endless deserted beaches overhung by coconut palms. Its bays area protected from sharks by coral reefs, its hills covered with luxuriant vegetation. Plus there is a relative absence of unsightly tourist development. But Sainte Marie has a far less settled weather pattern that its island rival, Nosy Be. Cyclones strike regularly and you may have rain and wind at any time. But this is interspersed with calm sunny weather. The best months for a visit are from June to November.

And finally a couple of smaller points to remember:

How to get to Madagascar?

Visitors fly to the capital city of Tana from Johannesburg or Paris (and also from the island of Mauritius). Once a week, you can also fly direct from Johannesburg to the resort area of Nosy Be. (But this is a return flight only so ideal for a beach holiday).

Place Names in Madagascar

Madagascar is quite confusing in terms of place names, as the guide books swop between the English names, for example, Tulear, to the Madagascan name eg Toliara fairly indiscriminately.

In our proposals we tend to use the English/French names with the Madagasy names in brackets. But there is a trend towards using the Malagasy names more and more, even though they are quite difficult to pronounce in some cases.

Madagascar Safaris

Madagascar is undoubtedly an exotic destination!  This biodiversity hotspot that split from the Indian subcontinent around 88 million years ago, is the world’s second largest island country and this isolation has allowed native plants and animals to evolve in relative confinement.  Situated in the middle of the warm Indian Ocean, this must-see location is about 400 kilometers off the coast of East Africa but easy to reach from South Africa , Kenya and Europe – making this an excellent add-on to a traditional safari!

Explorations Africa

Madagascar Wildlife

Though the name Madagascar conjures up images of tropical rain forests with exotic flying creatures and colourful chameleons, the country is also home to some spectacular and very dry desert scenery.  The island’s diversity is mind-blowing, and one can have a complete change of landscape no matter which direction from Tana you take.  The capital city, Antananarivo, is locally named “Tana” and conveniently situated in the middle of the country.

Travel east from Tana and you’re in a popular area called Andasibe where most tourists head to see lemurs in the forests or on to the controversial Vakona island where habituated lemurs jump onto your shoulder, begging for a bite of fruit.  Fly south and slightly west, to access the weird and wonderful Spiny Forest where the several species of lemurs choose to live amongst the cactus-like Octopus trees.

The Eastern side of Madagascar spoils with beautiful tropical beaches and too many species of palm trees to possibly count.   Rain forests filled with lemurs, chameleons, spiders, foot-long worms, bright red snakes and exotic reptile species are only some of the few exciting things you’ll discover on a day or night walk with your guide.  One of the best things of Madagascar is that none of their snakes or spiders are poisonous, making this an ideal destination for all, including families with children.

West of Tana you’ll find the famous Baobab Alley in Morondova and to the North up the West coast you can see the strange formations of the Tsingy (needle-like limestone cliffs) that oddly also house many species of lemur, birds, reptiles and amphibians.  Nosy Be is a tiny island off the tip of the north-west coast that has possibly the best accommodations in the entire country as it’s a world hot spot for snorkeling, scuba diving, whales and whale sharks as it’s on the protected Mozambique channel. This island is immaculate, and one can be forgiven for thinking you have reached heaven.  Nosy Be has lemurs but is also close enough to the famous Madagascan vanilla and cacao fields to make an easy day trip!

Accommodation

Though Madagascar is relatively undeveloped in terms of tourism, there are good hotel accommodations available throughout the country with a smaller selection of higher end boutique properties.  Beautiful fully inclusive safari-style camps with excellent service and amenities are scarcer, but we’ve handpicked a select few that meet our standards in terms of overall experience and excellent guiding.

Interesting Facts on Madagascar

Explorations Africa

  • The world’s second largest island country
  • 90% of all plant and wildlife species are found nowhere else on earth!
  • Over 200 species of palm trees of which most are endemic
  • Over 100 lemur species, most of which are rare, vulnerable, or critically endangered
  • Two-thirds of the world’s chameleon species call Madagascar home
  • The official languages are Malagasy and French though English is widely spoken
  • Rice is the staple food of the Malagasy people
  • Though the predominant religion is Christianity, most people believe in animism
  • Home to the world’s tiniest chameleon, Brookesia sp. – at less than 29mm

Plowing the Rice Fields

Although Madagascar lies close to mainland Africa, its original settlers are actually from Borneo and they settled in the highlands growing the rice they’d brought with them. East Africans and Arab traders later joined and settled along the coastal areas, bringing their cultures with them. Traditional values and ancient beliefs are important to the Malagasy people so shamans, witch doctors and magic is still commonly practiced in many villages. Tombs are evident along the roadsides with richly decorated paintings or zebu (cow) horns, depicting the life of the deceased.

Language & Cuisine

Malagasy and French are the most spoken languages in Madagascar but all guides and most staff in the tourism industry speak English well.  We only came across a few places where English was limited but thankfully, we always had a guide to translate.  The food in Madagascar is truly sensational, extremely affordable and of top quality due to the strong French influence after 64yrs of French-colonial rule.

Tolagnaro Market Day

Weather in Madagascar

The highly diverse subtropical climate of Madagascar means you need to travel well prepared.  The rainy season runs from late December to March and tropical storms batter the northern and eastern rainforests in the country, making this the least desirable time to travel.  Dry season starts in April through October with the southern and western parts of the country being the driest.  Peak travel times for wildlife is from June to early December with July and August being the busiest.

  • Travel Tips

With limited and poor road infrastructure, vehicle transfers can be extremely frustrating!  We prefer to offer private charter flights where possible as the horrific road conditions in places can lead to a total sense-of-humour loss, besides an incredible waste of your precious time!  Spending the extra dollars on fast and reliable flights mean you can maximize your time on the ground in awe of the natural beauty.

Travel light as luggage restrictions are in place for all small charters and as a bonus most camps offer complimentary laundry service or prices are very reasonable.

Madagascar Zebus

Photography

Madagascar is a highlight for any photographer and if you’ve been on a traditional safari in destinations such as Tanzania, Botswana or Zambia, then adding Madagascar to your bucket list is a must!  Highlights include photographing the ring-tailed lemurs in the Sacred Gallery forest on the western side of the island, close-ups of Sifaka’s and the teeny tiny Brookesia Micra chameleon at only 29mm (1.1in)!!  A tripod is highly recommended as well as a flash and macro lens amongst others but please do contact us for our list of recommendations and expectations.

Why Travel to Madagascar ? by Luke Hardiman

In the Indian Ocean, off the southeastern coast of Africa lies one of the most bio-diverse countries in the world, Madagascar. Madagascar, the fourth-largest island in the world, is a diverse and utterly unique travel destination. The island is best known for its lemurs, exceptional biodiversity and abundance of endemic species. Madagascar is also renowned for its vibrant peoples, not to mention the tropical beaches, varied landscapes and bustling markets.

Visitors are drawn to this far-flung destination not only for its diversity of rare and exotic plants and animals, but also for its unexplored coral reefs and untouched wilderness areas covering a variety of scenic landscapes. Add to this the unique and welcoming Madagascan cultures, spectacular sea life and idyllic islands and it’s easy to see the immense allure of Madagascar.

The Diverse Wildlife of Madagascar

Madagascar is said to be home to 5% of the world’s flora and faunas species, of which over 80% are classified as endemic to Madagascar. When it comes to the mammal species on Madagascar only the bats can be found anywhere else in the world, with all other mammals species being endemic to this remarkable island. An estimated 65% of the bird species found on Madagascar are also endemic species. This island is the only place in the world where 70 varieties of lemur are found, ranging from acrobatic sifakas to rodent-like aye-ayes, traditionally viewed as bad omens by the local people. Madagascar is also home to the last remaining elephant birds, the largest bird in the world, among other exotic wildlife species. The world’s biggest and smallest chameleons also inhabit the island, which boasts the highest diversity of chameleons in the world. The plant diversity in Madagascar is also incredible including several endemic Baobab tree species.

The People of Madagascar

The diversity of Madagascar’s people reflects the rich natural diversity found in the flora and fauna of this isolated country. The Malagasy originated from Africa and Indonesia originally, with Arabic, Indian and Jewish immigrants mixing in with the population later. Today the warm-hearted locals are friendly and polite adding to the enjoyment of visiting this biological melting pot and exploring its fascinating cultures along with the natural splendors.
