Isla Catalina – A must visit Island from Punta Cana

Isla Catalina or Catalina Island is an island that flies under the radar in the Dominican Republic. It is one of the most beautiful Caribbean islands in the country and also one of the least visited. We’ll tell you why it’s an ideal island getaway destination whether you want to relax on the beach or try your hand at scuba diving and snorkeling in the clear blue waters. 

With so many excursions and tours to consider during your stay in Punta Cana, here’s what you can expect if you choose to visit Catalina Island as well as some things to do on your trip.

Where is Isla Catalina located and how do I get there?

Isla Catalina is part of La Romana Province on Hispaniola (the island shared by Haiti and DR). It’s one of two islands in El Este (Eastern) region. With a protected area larger than 7 miles long and 4 miles wide, Isla Catalina offers an idyllic Caribbean escape only 40 minutes from La Romana by fast boat.

Isla Catalina is located on the southeast corner of the Dominican Republic near the provinces of  La Altagracia  and  La Romana . It’s a popular location for snorkelers, its shallow waters and small size make it ideal for newbies who want some help getting comfortable in deep water.

Getting there

Making a trip to Isla Catalina is not like visiting your run-of-the-mill resort destination. It’s more of a full-day excursion. 

There are no flights to Isla Catalina. You must take a boat from La Romana. If you’re staying in Punta Cana , Cap Cana, or at a resort around Bávaro, you can also you can book the tour from a qualified operator that will take you to Catalina Island and back to your resort.

The water on Isla Catalina is crystal clear

Most days it’s so blue that it looks like you can see straight to the bottom. When you’re snorkeling or diving, you feel like a mermaid. The water is so crystal clear that some people claim you can see down as far as 20 feet.  

The seabed is filled with colorful fish and vibrant coral reefs. If you want to try scuba diving for the first time (or your 100th), there are plenty of dive shops on Isla Catalina where instructors will happily teach you how to use their equipment and explore the ocean depths.

Visting Isla Catalina does not need to cost a lot

You can visit Isla Catalina without burning a hole in your wallet.

The common tour to Catalina Island costs anywhere from $89 to $99 USD and it includes the following:

Beautiful beach for a day trip! Visited Catalina Island beach for a day trip and had an enjoyable time with family and friends. The beach is pristine with crystal clear waters, great for snorkeling, swimming and scuba diving, lots of coral reefs in the area. They have picnic tables and bathrooms, which is good because no one lives on the island. Take bug spray with you to avoid insect bites, there are mosquitoes and horse flies in the area. If you like fishing this is also a great spot to fish from a boat or beach.

Most do (Jul. 2021) Nice excursion for a private beach and snorkeling. Catamaran boat ride was fun. All day excursion from Punta Cana .

Excellent Find your way out here. There is a beach on the west side of the island that is absolutely gorgeous. I recommend this to anyone.

Fun Fact: Captain Kidd’s lost ship “The Quedagh Merchant” found

In 2007, while snorkeling off the coast of Catalina Island, a snorkeler found cannons and contacted the Dominican Republic’s National Office of Underwater Cultural Heritage (ONPCS), which in turn contacted Indiana University.

Indiana University concluded that the archaeological record matches very well with the historical record therefore the wreck was the long-lost “ Quedagh Merchan t” which belonged to William Kidd .

Isla Catalina es una de las más bonitas de todo el Caribe. A pocos kilómetros de La Romana, al Este de República Dominicana, la isla cuenta con apenas 15 kilómetros cuadrados de playas y selva en la que destacan la fauna y la flora . Aunque es la segunda isla más grande del país, solo por detrás de isla Saona.

Catalina es una isla que destaca por su belleza natural y sus paisajes vírgenes. Forma parte del Parque Nacional del Este , y está preparada para acogerte y que disfrutes de una calma que solo los lugares tan auténticos pueden brindarte. Muchos visitantes comentan tras las excursiones que se han encontrado con las playas más bonitas que han visto en su vida: vírgenes, paradisíacas, con arena blanca y agua cristalina, isla Catalina se convierte en un sitio ideal para realizar actividades acuáticas .

La isla tiene tres playas principales: la del Este, del Oeste y del Norte. En esta excursión podrás disfrutar de ellas, sobre todo de la del oeste, que es la que más turismo acoge por su belleza.

El snorkel  y el buceo alcanzan en isla Catalina su máximo significado, y es que el litoral de la isla esta formado por arrecifes de corales en los que viven peces tropicales de todos los colores, estrellas de mar y mucha más variedad de fauna marina que junto al agua cristalina lo hacen una zona perfecta para sumergirse.

Se encuentra a pocos kilómetros al sureste de la isla La Española , en La Romana, y el traslado dura apenas 30 minutos en barco desde el puerto. En el trayecto podrás disfrutar de un paisaje espectacular y es posible que podamos ver, a escasos metros, animales cómo los manatíes o delfines .

Es una de las islas con más biodiversidad del país y es que hay más de 300 especies de aves en la zona. Además, entre la vegetación, se encuentran más de 500 variedades de plantas.

Por todo esto, es una de las experiencias más solicitadas por los turistas.

¿Qué viene incluido en la excursión a Isla Catalina?

La excursión a isla Catalina sale todos los días. Comienza desde temprano e incluye el traslado desde tu hotel hasta la localidad de La Romana, a 69 kilómetros de carretera de Punta Cana, desde donde sale el catamarán hacia isla Catalina. La duración aproximada de la excursión suele ser de 8 horas , por lo que regresarás a tu hotel a la tarde-noche.

En el catamarán tendrás acceso a bebidas locales y gozarás de la compañía de un equipo de animación que te mantendrá entretenido durante todo el trayecto.

Una vez en la isla y rodeado de la fina arena de sus playas, tendrás de tiempo libre para que puedas disfrutar de este pequeño paraíso . Las opciones son infinitas: relajarte, hacer snorkel, paseos por la costa...

Esta excursión también incluye un buffet libre para almorzar , en el que podrás probar alimentos típicos y bebidas de la República Dominicana.

Where is Catalina Island in the Dominican Republic? Not to be confused with Catalina Island in California. This Isla Catalina is a small historic island off the southeast coast of the Dominican Republic.

Catalina Island is a popular tourist destination in the Dominican Republic.

At the present time, I call it “the most beautiful island in the Caribbean.” It’s a perfect day tour if you’re staying in Punta Cana or Bayahibe. The private beach there is owned by Costa Cruises.

The water is Caribbean blue, the sand is white, and it’s a great escape to another piece of paradise that the Dominican Republic offers. If you love to snorkel or dive, there is plenty of beauty to be found under the sea here.

We took a tour with Scuba Caribe during our week’s vacation at the Hilton La Romana . It was one of our best days there. Absolutely, unforgettable.

My husband is still raving about the snorkeling there. I can’t stop thinking about the water… the prettiest crystal blue water I’ve ever seen. Catalina Island definitely won a special place in our hearts.

Booking an Isla Catalina tour

Scuba caribe.

We booked our tour via Scuba Caribe ( not sponsored or affiliated ). There are other tour agencies out there that do offer their own tours to the island. You may want to speak to the tour specialist at your hotel.

The Catalina Island Snorkeling tour we booked included: a boat ride to and from the island, snorkeling the coral reef, buffet lunch, snacks, and open bar.

Looking to scuba dive and enjoy Catalina Island in the Dominican Republic? Scuba Caribe also offers a similar tour with two dive sites . You’ll go underwater to explore the Catalina Wall and the Aquarium Reef.

From start to finish, Scuba Caribe did a wonderful job. They focused on safety, yet made sure we had a fantastic time.

During our 1st spot at the coral reef, they made sure everyone got a chance to snorkel. Even those that had never snorkel got the chance.

The guides were so patient and held on to these non-swimmers with lifesavers. Of course, we were all wearing safety floats around our waists.

That coral reef was one of the most beautiful reefs I’ve been to yet. There were schools of tropical fish and colorful coral. I really had no idea that the Dominican Republic had such amazing snorkeling.

How long is the tour to Catalina Island?

It’s a full-day tour that starts at 8 am from Bayahibe. You’ll be back at your hotel for dinner by 5 pm.

Is the snorkel gear included?

Yes. Any tour operator you use should provide snorkel equipment. However, if you have your own that you are used to using, bring it with you.

What to do in Catalina Island

• Snorkel or dive
• Swim and relax on the beach

There isn’t a ton to do in Isla Catalina besides enjoying this lovely piece of paradise. Beach time and relaxation may be the exact reason why you’re on vacation in the Dominican Republic.

When you do finally arrive at Catalina Island in the Dominican Republic, you will be awestruck by its beauty. I sure was! Once you are done gawking, make sure you get the best beach seats on the beach.

As soon as the tour operator finishes giving you a quick summary of guidelines, seek out the assistants on the beach waiting to help you with beach chairs.

Note they are only allowed to handle the beach chairs. Find a spot under a palm tree and sit closer to the shore for the best view. Don’t forget to tip the lovely gentlemen.

Take a nice swim in the warm and clear water of Playa Isla Catalina. The after is exactly how you see it in the photos.

Beach chairs are provided for on the beach and are part of your tour. When you arrive, have someone assist you in putting the beach chairs exactly where you’d like.

Relax on the beach with a drink in hand. Sink those toes in the soft white sand.

There is a designated area specifically for snorkeling by the cliff walls. When your snorkel guide is ready to snorkel or dive out by the rocky cliffs, head on out. Don’t miss it if you love to snorkel. I stayed behind because I really wanted to enjoy the beach and had snorkeled at the 1st spot.

Hubby snorkeled almost our entire time and was in heaven. He saw stingrays, sea urchins, starfish, and all sorts of fish. After this tour, he was inspired to finally get his Scuba Certification with Scuba Caribe during our time in La Romana.

You can also take a nice walk down the shoreline. There are small trails above the cliffs that you can hike and explore. Warning, make sure to wear mosquito spray.

Fun fact: The highest elevation on the island is only 60 feet above sea level.

While you’re at it, don’t forget to take pictures. Have fun! You’ll want proof of the time spent on this glorious island.

Lunch Buffet

The lunch provided by Scuba Caribe is a full spread of some traditional local foods. For me, it was a treat. Expect arroz con gandulez, macaroni salads, pork chops, bread, salads, and more.

Your tour operator will let you know which buffet station and open belongs to your group at the beginning of your tour.

The open bar is mostly soda and beer. On the boat ride back, they will serve rum.

There is a VIP tour that you can pay extra for a lobster lunch.

What to Be aware of…

A day trip to Catalina Island in the Dominican Republic is a wonderful tour to take and you won’t regret it. The only thing I’d be aware of on the island is the shop owners that approach you upon arrival. I noticed they will mostly approach the females.

The moment you sit, they come out to speak to you and give you a small gift (that I’m sure is made in China). Our was a wooden trinket on a black string. They try to charmingly persuade you to only shop at their gift shop.

I suggest politely declining, or they’ll get aggressive the moment you step into another gift shop that is not theirs. Speaking from experience.

This small part of the day shouldn’t deter you from booking this fun day trip to Catalina Island during your time in the Dominican Republic.

• Mosquito Spray If you plan to walk the short trails, bring mosquito spray.
• Beach Towels They are not provided. You can bring your beach towels from the resort, make sure to bring them back with you.
• Swimsuit So not exactly “packing it,” but don’t leave your hotel without it wearing it.
• Cover-up Something dry to throw over yourself and cover up for the ride to and from the island.
• Flip Flops / Sandals
• Snorkel Gear Your tour guide more than likely will provide it. If you feel more comfortable with your snorkel, bring it.
• Waterproof Camera Record the memories you’ll be making on vacation. The majority of the photos above were taken with the GoPro 10 . It was our first trip with the most recent GoPro release, and I have to say I’m impressed. The site’s photos are shrunk in size, but the originals are sharp and vibrant.

Snorkeling between tectonic plates was impressive. Our guide, I believe her name was Jorge, was especially kind to me, when I freaked out a little while snorkeling. He held on to me the whole time. All-in-all, it was a beautiful experience you can only have there!

I had only ever seen colorful fish and coral like these on TV, or in aquariums. The ocean with its inhabitants is another world! I had never seen before anything so beautiful and harmonious in my life. Although this trip turned out more expensive for our family of 4 than we would have liked, but the experience we had was unforgettable. Neither of us had ever been snorkelling before, but we liked it!

What is Isla Saona?

 Isla Saona (or in English Saona Island) is the most popular tourist destination for day-trips in the Dominican Republic. It is an island in the southeast of the country, dotted with palm-fringed beaches (some of the best beaches in the Domican Republic ) and surrounded by incredibly blue turquoise waters. It is part of the National Park Cotubanamá (formerly called Parque Nacional del Este).

 Isla Saona gets visited every day by thousands of tourists. Despite those hordes, it is a beautiful place (I couldn’t believe it before I was there for the first time). When arriving at this picture-perfect island with its stunning coastline, you will feel like you are in paradise.  Most of the Saona Island excursions have a set amount of stops. You will see the natural swimming pool with some starfish, have (sometimes) a quick mediocre snorkeling stop (please note that Isla Saona is not a snorkeling excursion – check out this post if you are looking for better snorkeling options ), cruise along the coastline of the national park with an ocean catamaran and have a speed boat ride the other way back. In between all of this, you’ll enjoy a simple but tasty Dominican lunch and, of course, a lot of rum.

That’s just 100 USD per person for a private tour if you go with 15 people, which is much cheaper than most Isla Saona private tours.

 You will start your tour in La Romana and stop at the most famous snorkeling spot in the area , where you can see colorful fish and a tropical reef. At the island, you have plenty of time to enjoy your private lunch, the beautiful beach and refreshing drinks – alcoholic and non-alcoholic. In the afternoon, you head back to your starting point.

Just if snorkeling is important for you or if you have already been to Isla Saona, Isla Catalina might be the better pick for you.

Visit Catalina Island , a point of passage towards the Underwater Museum of Naufragio del Capitán Kidd Shipwreck, but also the perfect place to enjoy wonderful and idyllic white-sand beaches .

It is a place to dock for cruises, where passengers take advantage to discover this renowned historical island of the Caribbean.

Famous for its coral reefs, diving lovers enjoy quite much observing the incredible underwater fauna and the wreck of the sank boat from Kidd Captain, located only 2 or 3 meters deep in the vicinity of the island. Being part of the Underwater Museums route of La Romana, the Naufragio del Capitán Kidd Shipwreck became famous due to its discovery by a tourist and a later documentary by National Geographic.

Apart from the shipwreck, reefs create an amazing coral wall causing countless wrecks in the area, being nowadays one of the most famous destinations for divers who visit the country.

During your visit to the island, apart from enjoying a beach day in the Caribbean style, it is typical to eat a buffet lunch in the restaurants of Casa de Campo , as well as shopping in some small shops or discovering typical dances sometimes performed.

It is a really nice place for fishing where Guatapaná, Jureles, Scombridaes and other kinds of warm waters fishes have been caught.

My family and I went to Isla Catalina and it was amazing. The tour take us to Altos de Chavon and then to snorkel near the island, near The Wall, which is a reef with lot of beautiful and colorful fishes and corals. I strongly recommend this adventure!
