Coral Princess Review, An Intimate Ship To Enjoy Globally

The Coral princess cruise ship in port

The Coral Princess cruise ship was launched in 2003, and while she sailed the waters of North America for the majority of her life, she now calls Brisbane, Australia, her home port. I had the chance to review the Coral Princess on a 14-day sailing in North America before she relocated south.

Currently, the Coral Princess offers itineraries around Australia and New Zealand between November and April. Then, she positions through the Middle East to London, England, where she sails to Northern Europe.

Guests can take a world cruise of up to 110 days or get exclusive offers on Transatlantic sailings and roundtrip South Pacific cruises from Australia or New Zealand.

About The Coral-Class Vessel

Like her sister ship, the Island Princess, the Coral is a Coral-class vessel owned by Princess cruises, a subsidiary of the Carnival Corporation. With a passenger capacity of 2,000 and a crew of 895, guests can expect good customer service with a low passenger-to-crew ratio.

Coral Princess Lido deck

While built in 2003 for the Panama Canal, Princess refurbished the vessel in January 2019, adding luxury guest beds with pillow tops. She later received an upgrade to MedallionClass and joined the Princess fleet with the  Ocean Medallion technology.

More than 70% of her 1,000 staterooms have balconies, allowing you to enjoy the scenery no matter where you sail. Being a smaller vessel, she is best suited to those who prefer an intimate onboard atmosphere.

Princess refurbished her sister, the Island Princess, adding more staterooms but eliminating some common areas. While this wasn’t popular amongst guests, Princess decided not to mirror that renovation on the Coral.

Aft of the Coral Princess in port

So, the Coral Princess retains her original passenger capacity and remains spacious, like when she was built.

If you prefer a vessel with more venues and attractions, the larger Majestic Princess   or Royal Princess might be more suited to you.

First Impressions

While needing a refresh, Coral’s public areas are spacious, clean, and well-maintained. With only twelve decks, you’ll find it easy to memorize the deck plan and access to dining areas.

The vessel has three swimming pools; the Lido, the Lotus Pool, and one in the sanctuary. The indoor Lotus Pool was quite lovely and wonderful for itineraries with cooler weather. Two hot tubs were adjacent to the pool. While the area is heated, I didn’t find it overly humid compared to other ships.

Lotus indoor pool on the Coral Princess

The outdoor Lido Pool and three hot tubs feature a large-screen TV for watching Princesses’ movies under the stars. However, you won’t find a waterslide, climbing wall, or water sports area for children.

On the Coral, the dining rooms weren’t located at the vessel’s aft, like most ships. Instead, you can find the Provence dining room mid-ship on deck 6 Fiesta and Bordeaux dining venue on deck 5 Plaza.

What I found problematic was that hallways didn’t go through on these decks. So, you couldn’t walk through from the bow to mid-ship on those floors.

To access the dining rooms, you had to walk up or down one flight of stairs and then down or up again.

The Promenade Deck featured a complete circuit around the vessel. I like that on ships. It’s a great place to walk, get some fresh air, and work off that extra dessert.

Most newer ships have dead ends on the outer decks, so it’s a feature I greatly appreciated.

Coral Princess Venues

Mid-ship, the Piazza was a hub of activity with live music, shopping, and special events through the sailing. While only three stories high, it provides a great venue to sit and watch the action. On the bottom deck, a beautiful bronze fountain added tranquility to the otherwise dead space.

Tranquil fountain in the Piazza on the Coral Princess

The ship hosts the captain’s party with its signature champagne waterfall in the Piazza during the first sea day. It’s a great time to enjoy a complimentary drink and meet new friends.

One of the most memorable events was the egg drop competition . This challenged participating guests to make something to suppose a raw egg, which would hopefully survive the drop from the top of the atrium to the floor below. No surprise; most of them ended up scrambling!

The Princess Theater and Explorers Lounge had scheduled lectures, Broadway-style programming, and comedy shows.

While Princess Cruises attracts families, their adult-only sanctuary allows guests to enjoy a kid-free zone. The sanctuary spans three decks at the ship’s aft, from decks 12 to 15 (Aloha, Lido, and Sun), with the pool on the lowest deck.

Coral Princess sanctuary adult-only pool

Guests can purchase half-day, full-day, or multiple days access. For an upcharge, you can also opt for a cabana for the ultimate luxury.

The small ship had the usual fitness center, Lotus Spa, basketball court, Links mini-golf, casino, and teen and youth center on deck 12.

There were a few bars around the ship; the Wheelhouse, Crooner’s, Lido Bar, and Lotus Bar, to name a few.

Coral Princess Staterooms

Staterooms vary in size from a 158 sq. foot interior to a 932 sq. foot suite. There are some accessible cabins for wheelchair guests.

I stayed in an interior for 14 days. In comparison to other lines, the room was tiny. Other than the bed, there was a small desk and no sofa. Storage was limited too.

Coral Princess interior stateroom

Their outside staterooms are similar in size. While the balcony staterooms are roomer at 212 sq. feet (including the balcony), you still won’t have a couch.

Many Princess Cruise ships only add a couch when you book a mini-suite. We enjoyed a  mini-suite on the Majestic Princess , and it was hard to go back to anything less than that.

The mini-suites, club class cabins, and suites have bathtubs instead of showers. If you’re cruising with little ones, you may prefer to upgrade to get this feature. They also have two televisions, one in the living area and one in the bedroom.

Full suites have priority boarding and disembarkation, upgraded linens and toiletries, premium balcony furniture, plus a host of other perks.

Princess recently introduced their “Princess Upgrade” program inviting selected guests to bid for a better stateroom.

Aerial shot of the Coral Princess

While we were recently invited to bid on our upcoming cruise, we chose not to because we were cruising with family and wanted to keep our cabins close together.

Staterooms To Avoid

If you’re sensitive to noise, there are specific staterooms you should avoid. These include the following:

  • Cabins adjacent to the laundry room. P623 (deck 6), E717 (deck 8), D720 (deck 9), C710 (deck 10), and B711 (deck 11).
  • Almost all the cabins on deck 5 are underneath the casino and busy traffic areas.
  • All staterooms on deck 6 are close to the casino.
  • Mid-ship cabins on deck 8, numbered 312 to 334 and 311 to 335, are over the Wheelhouse Bar.
  • Many staterooms on deck 12 are over the Horizon Buffet and pool areas. You could hear staff scraping and moving the chairs and loungers across the floors.

Dining On The Coral Princess

No ship review of the Coral Princess is complete without a review of the food and dining options. Passengers can choose a fixed time or “dine my way.” Since I cruise with food allergies , having a set dining time at the same table with a consistent server is always safer.

Complimentary options include one of the dining rooms on decks 5 and 6, the Horizon Court buffet, a pizzeria, the International Café, and the Lido grill.

Prosciutto and melon appetizer, and surf and turf entree

Also in the Lido deck is the popular ice cream bar. While the pizza was free to eat at the pizzeria, ordering to your stateroom incurs a small fee.

Princess also offers 24-hour room service, and during the cruise, you can order food and drink using your Medallion.

Meals in the dining rooms are classically elegant. Even on non-formal nights, guests dressed the part for dinner, and the seating felt intimate even when sharing a table. My food selections were well presented, nicely portioned, and flavorful.

Princess catered well to my food allergies, and their gluten-free bread was one of the best I’ve tasted across different cruise lines.

All my meals during my 14-day journey were delicious, but I felt Princess excelled in their presentation of desserts. Their chocolate journeys invite guests to “indulge in chocolate journeys,” and I DID!

Princess Cruises chocolate journeys dessert

Alternatively, the Coral princess has three specialty dining restaurants. Located on deck 7 (promenade), Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria and Bayou Cafe and Steakhouse offer fine dining. The Italian restaurant charges a USD 25 fee, and the latter a USD 29.

I found the pricing extremely reasonable, considering RCI Ovation of the Seas charges USD 64.95 for their steakhouse and USD 49.95 for a meal in the Italian restaurant.

I tried both the Bayou Steakhouse and Sabatini’s and was thrilled they could make my food gluten and lactose-free.

To add a little romance to your cruise, the “Ultimate Balcony Dining” allows you to enjoy a fantastic meal while savoring the views in an iconic location.

Princess Cruises' Ultimate Balcony Dining

Laundry Facilities

On an extended cruise, it’s nice to have the option of doing laundry without paying hundreds of dollars. By doing laundry, you can pack half as much. The Coral has self-serve laundromats on decks 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12.

Laundry facilities are busiest on sea days (especially the last) and formal nights as everyone attempts to iron their “Sunday best.”

With the addition of the Ocean Medallion, you no longer need to carry quarters to pay for laundry but can scan your Medallion instead.

Entertainment

The onboard entertainment was good, from the comedians to the Broadway-style shows in the Princess Theater. The performances were always well attended, and it seemed like everyone enjoyed them.

Sitting and listening to bands and music in the Universal Lounge was lovely some nights. I was thankful Princess Cruises didn’t remove this aft venue to add more staterooms, as they did on the Island Princess.

The Explorers Lounge was a great space if you love dancing in the wee hours.

I particularly enjoyed a cooking demonstration that provided some entertainment with comical twists. Afterward, guests could meet the chefs and had the option to purchase a signed cookbook.

Unfortunately, the Coral Princess has had a turbulent history, with two “announced” fires. In 2013, an incident caused a fire in the engine room, which was put out quickly and caused minor damage.

Seven years later, in 2020, another fire occurred in the engine room again, but luckily there were no injuries.

As most passengers know, fire is the biggest concern for cruise ships, so they’re built with high-tech detection systems and compartments to contain fires quickly.

So, you can imagine my surprise when I was cruising through Glacier Bay National Park when a staff member announced a fire in the Lotus Spa.

On the Lido deck of the Coral Princess

Standing on the Lido deck admiring the glaciers, I could see smoke rising from the ships aft. The captain instructed us to evacuate the spa area immediately.

Knowing that only two cruise ships a day sail in Glacier Bay and I hadn’t seen the other one yet, I had visions of the “Titanic” movie. Looking down into the water riddled with icebergs, I knew it was just about the worst place to have a fire globally.

Luckily, the crew extinguished the fire quickly, but it was a valuable lesson in what COULD happen on a cruise ship.

Overall, I enjoyed my cruise on the Coral Princess. I’ve always been a fan of mid-sized vessels because I prefer their intimate feel. Being an older ship, this Princess ship offers excellent value for those who cruise on a budget.

Thanks for your review, it was very helpful as we are doing the circumnavigation cruise around Australia in October. This will be our first cruise on a large ship as we have previously only cruised on the Windstar yachts.

What a disappointment the champagne fountain was!! They only poured enough champagne to fill first 3 rows of glasses & used it as another money grab for photos.

The last two Princess ships I've been on haven't done the champagne fountain.

Just completed a trip on the Coral Princess Brisbane to New Zealand and return. I have to say wow what a trip . The Staff on-board were fantastic . The Ship was spotlessly clean. Meals on-board were plentiful and a great range of types . We missed two stops due to Cyclone Gabrielle but full credit to the Captain who kept us and his crew safe . Thanks to all staff for making this trip truly memorable.

All 16 Princess Cruises Ships, From Newest to Oldest

Here’s everything you need to know about the Princess Cruises fleet.

coral sea cruise ship

Courtesy of Princess Cruises

Sailors of all ages love Princess Cruises for its quality, service, value, and serene style of cruising.  What’s more, the 2023 T+L World’s Best Award-winning mega-ship line   — which is also a WBA Hall of Fame Honoree — tends to steer clear of splashy entertainment (for example, you won’t find go-karts, water slides, or ziplines on board most ships) in favor of more refined activities. Discovery at SEA programming is a standout offering: In partnership with Discovery and Animal Planet, guests can partake in nature-centric onboard activities and shore excursions. Most Princess ships boast a majestic atrium modeled after an Italian piazza, and it’s here where you’ll find some of the best drinking, dining, and shopping venues on board.

According to travel advisor and cruise specialist Jennaca Boose of Marvelous Mouse Travels , Princess’ fleet of 15 ships — 16 if you count the upcoming Sun Princess , which will make its long-anticipated debut this year — is family-friendly, and each vessel is “equipped to entertain all ages;” however, some cater towards specific age demographics better than others. For example, she says, travelers sailing with younger children will especially love Royal Princess and Regal Princess , which “have even more to offer” beyond the kids club, such as “outdoor play areas with jungle gyms and a separate teen space with a hot tub.” Meanwhile, says Boose, cruisers craving an intimate onboard experience may consider sailing aboard Coral Princess or Island Princess , which are two of the line’s smaller ships.

Finally, it’s also worth noting that the line offers dozens, if not hundreds, of itineraries across the globe, including Alaska, Mexico, Japan, the Mediterranean, and many more. “Whether you’re looking for a quick getaway or an immersive cultural itinerary,” says Boose, “Princess has a ship for you.” Without further ado, keep scrolling for a breakdown of each ship in the Princess Cruises fleet to help you narrow down which vessels would be best for you.

Sun Princess

Inaugural Year: 2024

Ship Class: Sphere

Ship Capacity: 4,300 guests

The inaugural ship in Princess' new Sphere class, Sun Princess is the line's largest — and flashiest — vessel to date. Set to sail the Mediterranean and Caribbean, this 20-deck mega-ship is sure to make waves following its early 2024 debut. The Park19 family zone will offer nine fun-filled activities, including the Sea Breeze (the first Rollglider at sea), The Lookout (an open-air observation deck), and Coastal Climb (a climbing structure for adventure enthusiasts of all ages). There’s also a two-deck arena, the multi-level Dome entertainment space, and the brand-new Spellbound, a Victorian-themed bar where guests can watch magicians while sipping theatrical cocktails.

Discovery Princess

Inaugural Year: 2022

Ship Class: Royal

Ship Capacity: 3,660 guests

For an elegant onboard experience complete with world-class specialty dining that’ll entice any gourmand, spectacular live entertainment in the lavish Princess Theater, and the largest balconies at sea (spanning over 1,000 square feet) found in one of the ship’s splurge-worthy Sky Suites, look no further than Princess’ final Royal-class ship. Spend sea days soaking up the sun — and the ocean views — by the infinity Wake View Pool.

Enchanted Princess

Inaugural Year: 2021

The elegant Enchanted Princess is a haven for relaxation-seekers with four sparkling pools (including the infinity-edge Wake View Pool), 10 hot tubs, and a serene spa offering Asian-inspired treatments. For the ultimate splurge, reserve one of the sprawling Sky Suites, best known for their expansive balconies offering 270-degree sea views. Other honorable mentions include the Sanctuary, Discovery at SEA, movie screenings under the stars, and the SeaWalk, a 60-foot-long glass-enclosed hallway with floor-to-ceiling ocean vistas.

Sky Princess

Inaugural Year: 2019

The snazzy Sky Princess made its grand debut in 2019; fast-forward five years later, and the ship has retained its allure. The three-story atrium is the beating heart of the ship, dotted with shops, bars, and restaurants galore. Check out Chef’s Table Lumiere, or try your luck at the casino for the ultimate splurge. Finally, for the best ocean views, book one of the Sky Suites.

Majestic Princess

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Inaugural Year: 2017

Ship Capacity: 3,560 guests

This Royal-class ship was initially designed for cruises from Shanghai, which means passengers can expect Chinese-inspired decor along with the fantastic specialty restaurant, Harmony, which features mouthwatering Asian menu items like wok-fried lobster, spring rolls, and more. Also unique to Majestic Princess is the adults-only Hollywood Pool Club, a perfect spot for grown-ups looking to soak in style. Meanwhile, don’t miss the dazzling casino and incredible SeaWalk, where panoramic ocean views await.

Regal Princess

Inaugural Year: 2014

This 2014 mega-ship definitely delivers in terms of onboard attractions. A few fan favorites include movies under the stars (best enjoyed with popcorn and candy in hand, of course), original productions, an outdoor musical fountain show, and Princess Live!, where passengers will find interactive culinary shows along with late-night comedy and game shows that can be viewed in-person or from the comfort of one’s stateroom. Last but not least, don’t forget to snap a selfie on the SeaWalk.

Royal Princess

Inaugural Year: 2013

Prepare to receive the royal treatment (pun intended) aboard the 3,560-passenger Royal Princess . The ship’s dazzling common spaces, including the grand atrium and the SeaWalk, are sure to impress design lovers, while the drinking and dining options, including the extravagant Chef’s Table Lumiere — available only on Royal-class ships — will delight culinary connoisseurs of all ages.

Ruby Princess

Inaugural Year: 2008

Ship Class: Crown

Ship Capacity: 3,080 guests

Entertainment options abound on the 19-deck Ruby Princess , from movies under the stars and basketball to golfing and (hopefully) winning big at the casino. While party-going cruisers can dance ‘til the wee hours of the night at Skywalkers, serenity-seeking travelers may choose to hit the sack early before waking up to enjoy the spa or The Sanctuary.

Emerald Princess

Inaugural Year: 2007

Last refurbished in 2019, Emerald Princess features something for families of all ages, including  reimagined Camp Discovery youth and teen centers and the serene Sanctuary, a kid-free slice of paradise in the middle of the sea. Passengers can also perfect their swing at the putting course, enjoy poolside movie screenings, unwind at one of several swanky bars and lounges, including the Speakeasy Cigar Lounge, hit the spa, or dance the night away at the onboard club. In summary, it’s pretty much impossible to be bored on this ship.

Crown Princess

Inaugural Year: 2006

Despite its 3,000-plus passenger capacity , Crown Princess never feels super crowded thanks to abundant onboard amenities and activities. Highlights include three main dining rooms, a three-story atrium, and, of course, ample activities and programming, which run the gamut from basketball courts and pajama movie nights for kids to karaoke and an onboard nightclub.

Diamond Princess

Inaugural Year: 2004

Ship Class: Grand

Ship Capacity: 2,670 guests

Best known for its Asia itineraries, Diamond Princess is sure to wow cruisers of all ages with its unique onboard features. Wellness-seekers need not miss the Izumi Japanese Bath, where guests can enjoy a traditional Japanese bathing experience coupled with breathtaking ocean views. There’s also the adults-only Sanctuary sun deck, Broadway-caliber entertainment, ample restaurants (including five main dining rooms), a nightclub, and so much more.

Caribbean Princess

Ship Capacity: 3,140 guests

This massive 18-deck ship was last refurbished in 2019 to bring it up to par with the line’s latest vessels. The European-inspired piazza , boasting street performers, eclectic boutiques, restaurants and bars, and a striking spiral staircase, is the beating heart of the ship. Plus, as part of the line’s partnership with Discovery, guests can enjoy nature-filled activities and lectures.

Sapphire Princess

Ship Capacity: 2,670 guests

Those craving a traditional cruising experience need not look further than the 20-year-old Sapphire Princess . With an onboard nightclub, five main dining rooms (plus many other bars and lounges, including a cigar lounge), this 2,670-passenger ship is among the line’s buzziest. After dancing the night away, adults can spend the day relaxing at The Sanctuary, while families will surely appreciate the dedicated spaces for kids, tweens, and teens.

Island Princess

Inaugural Year: 2003

Ship Class: Coral

Ship Capacity: 2,200 guests

Island Princess was purposefully built to sail through the Panama Canal. This 2,200-guest, 20-plus-year-old ship offers a more refined onboard experience compared to the line’s newer, flashier vessels. Sea days are well spent at the spa, in swimming pools, or sipping cocktails in the massive atriums; come nighttime, watch movies under the stars (a Princess staple) or catch live musical performances before hitting the sack — and getting ready to do it all again the following day.

Coral Princess

Ship Capacity: 2,000 guests

Coral Princess is Princess’ smallest ship; however, there is still plenty to see, do, and experience on board. Guests can make themselves right at home in the piazza-style grand atrium, where prime people-watching awaits. For some R&R, grown-ups can head to the tranquil, adults-only Sanctuary while the kids are at play at the children’s centers.

Grand Princess

Inaugural Year: 1998

Ship Capacity: 2,600 guests

Princess’ oldest ship underwent a major renovation back in 2019, adding fan-favorite restaurants like Alfredo's Pizzeria, Salty Dog Grill, and Coffee & Cones. Catch a Broadway-style show, relax at The Sanctuary, or partake in nature-centric activities as part of the line’s Discovery at SEA programming.

On December 15, 2014, Tony Briggs (Coral Princess Cruises Pty Ltd's Founder and Managing Director) announced that the Singapore -based Kallang Capital Holdings (part of PrimePartners Group Pte Ltd) has acquired a majority stake in the company.

Coral Expeditions itineraries feature sailing around deserted islands and pristine reefs beyond the reach of day trippers and larger ships. The company's Great Barrier Reef (Coral Sea) cruise itineraries depart from the Queensland ports Darwin to Cairns , each offering a snapshot of the diverse ecosystem of the marine park.

The travel company Coral Expeditions (fka Coral Princess Cruises/ fleet ) was established in 1984 by Captain Tony Briggs. His first ship was an ex-World War II Fairmile-class submarine chaser. The vessel was converted to carry up to 24 passengers on short overnight trips to the Great Barrier Reef from the company's base in Cairns. All Coral Expeditions ships are Australia-flagged, Australia-based, and employ all-Australian crew. Coral Expeditions' regions of operation include New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Kimberley and Northern Australia, Tasmania and South Pacific Islands. The 3-ship fleet comprises Coral Discoverer, and the pair of motor catamarans (sister-ships by design) Coral Expeditions 1 (fka "Coral Princess I") and Coral Expeditions 2 (fka "Coral Princess II").

Decks and Cabins

The Coral Discoverer ship has 4 passenger decks with a total of 36 staterooms . All passenger staterooms were also refurbished and received a substantial upgrade. Six Bridge Deck balcony cabins were added. Each of the other cabins also received a complete renovation, including soft furnishings, new artworks, updated bathroom fixtures.

Coral Discoverer offers 5 different cabin grades. Passengers accommodations range from Main Deck to Bridge Deck (each with french windows that open on a step-out private veranda). All staterooms are modernly furnished and feature individually controlled air-conditioning, original artworks, en-suite bathroom, iPod docking station, Australian brand toiletries, ample storage space, two twin beds (or a junior king bed). Cabin sizes vary between 15 m2 (161 ft2) and 20 m2 (215 ft2). Lower deck rooms are with porthole windows.

Shipboard facilities

Onboard facilities include an open-seating dining room, al fresco dining deck, 2 cocktail bars, sun deck, lecture lounge, panoramic lounge. The vessel has its own tender boats, glass bottom tour boat, inflatable zodiacs (used for landings), sea kayaks and the "Xplorer" (shore excursion tender).

Following the full refurbishment in 2016, the ship's Sun Deck was transformed into a social gathering space and onboard community hub. It was converted into undercover deck area with round-shaped "Explorer Bar" and open-air sun deck with loungers and an outdoor exercise area with fitness equipment.

Itineraries

On October 14, 2020, Coral Expeditions with Coral Discoverer restarted cruise operations after suspending all voyages since March due to the global Coronavirus crisis. The ship departed from homeport Cairns QLD carrying only Australian residents. The roundtrip 7-day Queensland cruise itinerary visited Cooktown , Lizard Island ,  Great Barrier Reef (Osprey Reef, Ribbon Reef, Mackay Reef), Daintree River (near Cape Tribulation), Fitzroy Island and Sudbury Cay (private island behind Fitzroy).

In late-November 2020, Coral Expeditions officially received approval for its Tasmania 2021 summer itinerary program. The schedule included 8 voyages (on the ship Coral Discoverer) between January 1 and March 18 (2021). The mini-season started with the annual "Yachtsman’s Cruise" (aka "Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race 2020"/ Sydney NSW to Hobart Tasmania ) on December 26, 2020. For January 1 was scheduled the 16-night "Tasmanian Circumnavigation" itinerary. Followed 6x 10-days "Coastal Wilds of Tasmania and Coastal Treks" itineraries roundtrip from homeport Hobart.

Coral Discoverer's 2023-2024 schedule included new itineraries visiting Tiwi Islands (Northern Territory AU) . The 10-night "Art & Culture of the Kimberley and Tiwi Islands" voyages are from Broome to Darwin (Aug 28, 2023, and Aug 26, 2024) and from Darwin to Broome (Sept 8, 2023, and Sept 6, 2024). They both feature coastal navigation in Timor Sea (Joseph Bonaparte Gulf and visiting Melville Island's Munupi Arts & Crafts Centre) as well as land tours to Oomari/King George River's Falls, Kimberley's Horries/Garaanngaddim/Horizontal Falls and Montgomery Reef.

In 2018, Coral Expeditions had scheduled a 7-night “Coastal Treks of Tasmania” themed cruise itinerary (departure January 15) along Tasmania Island’s coastline. During the voyage, special guests of the ship were Alison and Angus Moore, Their onboard lectures were themed on Tasmania's flora and fauna.

Also in 2018, a 16-night itinerary was themed on World War 2 (1939-1945). Departing December 3 (2018) from Cairns (Queensland Australia) , the South Pacific Islands cruise visited New Caledonia, Solomon Islands (Guadalcanal), PNG, Vanuatu (Tanna Island). The onboard program was led by a skilled expedition team, with guest lecturer Peter Martin (maritime historian and mariner).

In June 2021, with Coral Discoverer Coral Expeditions launches the revised cruise program ( Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest) featuring longer itineraries and more immersive travel experiences. The new 7-night voyages (themed "Outerknown Adventures on the Great Barrier Reef") visit lesser-known and seldom visited outer reefs (like Osprey Reef) and isles (like Hope Island) in the Reef's northern region, plus the Daintree Rainforest (on mainland Queensland).

MSC CRUISES AND CHANTIERS DE L’ATLANTIQUE MARK TWO IMPORTANT MILESTONES FOR WORLD CLASS SHIPS

• construction begins on world class 3 and new ship is officially named as msc world asia • msc world america floats out and enters final phase of construction ready for naming ceremony in miami on 9 april 2025.

Geneva, Switzerland - 9 April, 2024 – MSC Cruises and Chantiers de l’Atlantique today marked two important milestones in the construction of the futuristic and sophisticated World Class ships at Seatrade Cruise Global, held in Miami.

Work has officially commenced on World 3, due to be delivered in 2026, with the steel-cutting ceremony and as is tradition, MSC Cruises revealed the name of the new ship - MSC World Asia . The name follows the format of the World Class ships that pay homage to the different continents, symbolising the global nature of MSC Cruises and whilst details of where the ship will operate is still to be revealed, MSC World Asia will feature signature design touches, experiences and features inspired by this incredible continent.

Meanwhile, sister ship MSC World America  completed another important milestone with the float out that took place on Sunday, 7 April at the shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. The ultramodern flagship enters her final phase of construction ready to be officially named on 9 April 2025 at MSC Cruises’ new state-of-the-art, landmark terminal in PortMiami, with a celebratory sailing to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve . The private island in The Bahamas is home to the MSC Foundation’s Super Coral Programme and has been designated a 'Hope Spot' by Mission Blue, the non-profit organisation founded by renowned oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle in recognition of conservation efforts on the island.

Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises commented , “MSC World America is another example of the incredible professional partnership between us and the Chantiers de l’Atlantique with whom we have designed five distinct and innovative prototypes – the most recent being the ground-breaking World Class platform. With each and every ship we strive to improve and enhance not only the environmental technology but also new features that enrich the experience for the guest as we design for the future holiday experience. MSC World Asia continues in this tradition and with this important milestone of the steel cutting we are pleased to confirm that she will offer even more advanced new features in terms of future-proof marine and onboard hospitality technologies as well as guest experiences.”

Laurent Castaing, General Manager, Chantiers de l’Atlantique commented, “We are very proud to begin construction on MSC World Asia. The third ship in the World Class series will feature cutting-edge technologies, making it one of the cleanest, most energy-efficient ships in the world. She embodies MSC Cruises’ and Chantiers de l’Atlantique’s long-term partnership and commitment toward the environment.”

MSC World America promises a new world of cruising with a whole host of new enriching and immersive features that are specially designed for all segments of the North American cruise market, from young couples through to multi-generational families. The ship will provide the comfort and breadth of experiences that guests from this market expect all whilst offering MSC Cruises’ hallmark high-quality, elegant European design. The World Class ships are distinguished by their eye-catching silhouette and signature plumb bow rising vertically from the waterline, with a stylish Y-shaped aft that opens onto an impressive outdoor promenade. These ships are an ultramodern urban metropolis at sea offering a world of different experiences - spanning 22 decks, with more than 2,600 cabins and suites, offering more than 40,000m2 of public space and featuring MSC Cruises’ largest Yacht Club to-date. The exclusive “ship within a ship” concept offers unparalleled levels of comfort, with generous public space including a private lounge and restaurant, stylish suites and substantial outdoor areas with a sun-deck spanning two decks with panoramic views of the ocean. MSC World Europa and MSC World America currently deliver one of the lowest carbon footprints of the cruise industry today, as per the International Maritime Organization’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and MSC World Asia will be an evolution of these high performing ships - with an even further reduced carbon footprint. MSC World Asia will become the fourth LNG ship to join the MSC Cruises fleet and LNG continues to be seen as a critical pathway towards maritime decarbonisation. Fossil LNG offers immediate GHG emission reductions compared to conventional marine fuels and a direct pathway to drop in renewable substitutes like Bio and Synthetic LNG, which MSC Cruises’ LNG ships are ready to use today when the fuels become commercially available at scale. New generation dual fuel internal combustion engines will help to reduce emissions and reduce methane slip by 30% versus current technology. MSC Cruises is part of an EU funded project GREEN RAY, that is working to minimise methane slip by developing new technologies that can be installed onto existing and new ships. Initial tests of the new combustion concept have shown encouraging results. The technologies will be tested and demonstrated for use on new build ships as well as retrofitting on existing ships. MSC World America and MSC World Asia, as with all new MSC Cruises ships will be fitted with shore power connectivity as standard and where available ashore, this reduces emissions by allowing the ship’s engines to be switched off in port. Smart technology is used throughout the ship will ensure guests can travel in comfort while keeping energy and water use low. A robust onboard recycling programme minimizes waste, and even the propellors are designed to reduce noise and avoid disturbing marine life.
