Perth Airport introduces new COVID-19-safe touchless technology

Perth Airport continues to launch new COVID-19-safe initiatives and practices including touchless technology throughout its terminals and car parks, to maintain the safety of passengers and staff.

Perth Airport introduces new COVID-19-safe touchless technology

Perth Airport (PER) is continuing to roll out new COVID-19-safe initiatives and practices, through its car parks and terminals to keep passengers and workers safe.

Perth Airport Chief Commercial Officer, Kate Holsgrove, said that Perth Airport has reimagined the traveller journey from car park to forecourt, terminal, security, flight gate and implemented additional COVID-19 safe measures, to reduce touchpoints and promote physical distancing and hand hygiene.

“The work our team has done over the past 18 months was validated, with Perth Airport recognised as the first Australian airport to be awarded an international Airport Health Accreditation, which recognised that the COVID-19-safe processes and measures that were implemented are robust and world-class, which has now been renewed for a second year.

“In FY21, almost 5.9 million people travelled through our terminals without a single COVID-19 breach. Maintaining the safety of all workers and travellers at Perth Airport remains our priority as aviation begins to recover and more passengers begin to travel.

“We have put the necessary measures in place to improve safety but that doesn’t mean our work is finished as we have looked to reduce contact points at our retail outlets and in our car parks.

“A new initiative is our partnership with Mr Yum, who operate a world-class food & beverage QR code ordering system which will allow passengers to pre-order and pay for items on their device and then pick up at the terminal,” added Holsgrove.

Mr Yum is a leading F&B ordering and payments platform. Participating venues upload their menus that become available via the Mr Yum platform for customers to order – either before their arrival or as they walk through the terminal by scanning a QR code. QR discs will also be on all tables enabling customers to scan and order and pay for food and beverages on their mobile device.

Holsgrove commented: “The system will introduce a touchless ordering system , providing customers an enhanced experience through seamless online ordering. We see this being particularly powerful as a queue buster in the early morning peak period.”

Mr Yum CEO and Co-Founder, Kim Teo, said offering QR code ordering at Perth Airport would make for a convenient and seamless in-terminal experience for travellers.

“Mr Yum is proud to partner with Perth Airport to offer an elevated experience to the thousands of people who pass through the airport every day, making it easier for those in a rush to grab a coffee or a bite to eat before boarding,” said Teo.

This service will be available at selected outlets in T2 and T4 from 20 September 2021, with the intent of expanding the service throughout all terminals.

Holsgrove further added that the airport is also preparing for a return to international travel by launching a new online shopping platform that offers products and services available at Perth Airport including, duty-free shopping.

She continued: “The new platform shop.perthairport.com.au creates a seamless and safer shopping experience for customers wanting to peruse the duty-free offering at Dufry stores located at Perth Airport.”

This expanded use of technology allows us to sell any product or service available at Perth Airport online and we are currently using the platform so that travellers can purchase access to the Aspire Lounge in T2.

“We will be working with our retail partners to expand the products and services available on the platform in the coming months, making it easier for passengers to shop in the way most convenient for them.

“We have also introduced new wave technology which allows motorists to enter our car parks without having to touch the entry or exit and pay machines.

“Other infrastructure investments made by Perth Airport during COVID-19 on projects such as: the Common User Self Service check-ins, the International Gate Upgrade Project and the Airport Management System Upgrade, will deliver higher quality travel experience for passengers and will reduce the number of touchpoints in the traveller journey. They will also deliver significant operational efficiencies for our airline partners who will be even more cost conscious as they emerge from COVID-19,” said Holsgrove.

“The efforts of the Perth Airport team have given the government and the community confidence that air travel is COVID-19-safe. This will be essential to the recovery of the aviation sector, as we hopefully move toward to a return to normal in the post- COVID-19 era.”

Videh Kumar Jaipuriar has been nominated for his exemplary leadership in managing and navigating Delhi International Airport (DEL) during the COVID-19 pandemic. He led multiple initiatives to ensure business continuity at DEL, which included passenger safety and convenience, stakeholder management, cash conservation, adoption of new technologies, and care for environment and employee safety.

He proactively engaged with the government stakeholders and supported them in safeguarding aviation through strong confidence building measures for travellers, such as developing several indigenous technology solutions like air circulation with six changes per hour and a combination of UV and plasma disinfection systems to provide safest journey experience to their passengers. Under his leadership, DEL has been forefront of implementing safety measures which was later adopted across the country.

Despite lockdown, Jaipuriar ensured that DEL was operational for rescue missions, medical evacuations, and transporting medical essentials to various parts of the country. He further led the Vande Bharat Mission flights of Government of India (a rescue mission to get Indians back to India), as well as rescue flights by other international governments. His outstanding leadership across all areas across the stakeholders in the aviation ecosystem and going beyond the call of duty in managing and navigating this crisis for a national capital airport having national importance makes him the apt choice for the Person of the Year Award.

Eng. Adnan Saggaf

Adnan Saggaf continues to demonstrate strong leadership skills throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and brought out of the box ideas in attracting traffic and to support his team during this difficult time. With new innovative ideas in balancing cash flow, the facilities were kept maintained and the personal were kept employed.

Saggaf has protected the financial stability of his staff income, ensured valuable cost cutting management, shown excellent performance of crisis management, and exceptional negotiation skills shown with authority regarding agreement restructuring and receivable payments.

To handle the loss of Umrah traffic to the airport, Saggaf chose to attract new airlines, mainly LCCs, to use the terminal with attractive offers and more reliable services. He built a new strategy by diversifying the airport offers. He prepared the facilities by deploying new technology and working on enhancing passenger experience. Saggaf also initiated a capacity building programme for the airside team by drafting SOPS, training and coaching, as well as initiating dedicated workshops to discuss ideas and to deploy new initiatives.

Leaders show strength in difficult times, and this is exactly what Saggaf showed and why he deserves to be awarded as the Person of the year 2021.

Peter Hall

Peter has been with the Sangster International Airport for over 25 years.

He has experience in customer service, operations and now oversees the security function and is also the Chief Operations Officer.

Peter has been instrumental in co-ordinating the preparation and implementation of a COVID-19 response plan for not just MBJ, but to guide the operation of all agencies operating on airport. The aim of this plan was to ensure a safe environment for staff and the travelling public; therefore, this plan was instrumental to establish consumer/travellers/public confidence and provided information and guidelines on the new protocols implemented at the airport.

Peter is well known for his expertise in investigation and aviation security. His co-operation with law enforcement stakeholders has been unrelenting in assuring the security of the airport and stakeholders alike.

While Peter is known as a firm individual that displays the outmost professionalism and integrity, he operates on the basis of equity and fairness in all matters relating to staff, clients, passengers and the general public.

Robson Freitas

Robson Freitas has developed and led the BH Airport plan for the resumption of airport operations post-COVID-19, as well as being responsible for leading the group of Directors and Managers at the airport, defining the three main pillars of recovery: Health and Safety of People, Institutional and Integrated Communication and Institutional Partners. These central pillars include ensuring hygiene and health and social distances measures for passengers, users, and the airport community, in addition to participating in strategic committees involving the public sectors to comply with regulatory rules. Freitas developed the COVID guardians programme, who were responsible in monitoring and following up on the measures already implemented for COVID-19 and advising users, employees and other people on compliance with distancing, hygiene and health measures recommended by health authorities. He also developed a COVID booklet with information and guidance for the airport community regarding good hygiene and health practices and led the beginning of the publication of a monthly newsletter with passenger curve information, allowing the planning of reopening and rehiring by commercial stores. Freitas also supported the reduction of OPEX by planning the temporary closure of areas, toilets and equipment in common use and internalising some activities.

Satyaki Raghunath

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Raghunath worked closely with all the aero concessionaires and cargo operators to minimise disruption and provide financial relief to them. The airline marketing team helped launch a historic first route to the U.S. West Coast and the cargo team at BIAL also achieved record numbers over this period, with the airport becoming India’s leading airport for the export of perishables. Despite the impact of COVID-19, Raghunath has led a digital transformation and expansion at BIAL airport, with new initiatives and the deployment of the fully biometric-based self-boarding solution for seamless passenger flow and travel experiences and a process automation and analytics platform. These initiatives amongst many others, meant that the airport won ACI World’s ‘Voice of the Customer’ initiative, which recognised BIAL airports efforts to prioritise their customers during COVID-19. Raghunath has remained a staunch and resilient leader during such an uncertain time and is very much appreciated by his team.

Alicia Prince

As Head of Operations, Alicia Prince has played a critical role in leading and navigating Cairns Airport through the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, Prince implemented a functional plan to ensure business continuity and staff welfare, segregating front-line operational staff into work teams to avoid interaction between groups, as well as strict sanitisation processes. She ensured that the $55 million domestic Terminal upgrade continued safely despite the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis.

She also deployed the COVIDSafe Operation Plan for Cairns Airport, which was endorsed and later commended by Queensland Chief Health Officer. As part of this plan Alicia developed an airport layout to provide physical separation of low risk and high-risk arrivals and initiated increased hygiene and sanitisation protocols. The health and safety of the airport community was paramount to maintaining operations, and in response to this Alicia initiated a COVIDSafe training program for the entire airport community and worked closely with her team to deliver.

As a result of the great work Prince has done to ensure COVID-19 best practices, Cairns Airport was one of the first Australian Airports to be awarded an ACI Global Health Accreditation.

Alicia also led the terminal optimisation project, which assessed and implemented terminal downscales due to the crisis. Significant savings (both financial and environmental) were achieved by reducing the operational footprint of the airport.

Whilst maintaining operations throughout the pandemic was a priority, Alicia ensured her team were kept well informed and engaged. Cairns Airport has a team of 33 volunteers which form part of Alicia’s wider team. To ensure they remained connected and cared for, Alicia and her team created care packages including home-made cakes and personally delivered to each of the volunteers’ houses in a COVIDSafe manner. Alicia demonstrated great leadership throughout the pandemic and continues to do so today. Her clear and transparent communication and collaboration with other Australian Airports and key agencies to ensure best practice and alignment contributed greatly to business continuity. Furthermore, all the above was managed whilst working remotely and juggling home schooling with her two young boys.

Balram Bheodari

Balram Bheodari leads Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport as North America’s most efficient airport, due to his vast knowledge of and astute attention to efficiency in aviation, which has allowed the airport to thrive in the most difficult of markets. Bheodari combines operational expertise, integrity, and selflessness to provide a quality of leadership throughout Atlanta Airport. He oversees all facets of airport governance, including operations and a multi-billion-dollar capital improvement programme, ATLNext, designed to pave the way for Atlanta’s growth over the next 20 years. During COVID-19, Bheodari developed a comprehensive resumption of operations playbook that served to support ATL’s recovery efforts. With guidance from the Federal Aviation Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) amid evolving health and safety guidelines, Bheodari steadfastly encouraged collaboration among stakeholders, team-building among aviation employees, and adaptability in uncertain times. Throughout the pandemic, he participated in daily calls with Airports Council International and other large-hub airports to share best practices as well as information from Washington, D.C. federal offices and the CDC.

He aimed to restore customer confidence and ensure the airport was a healthy facility using COVID-19 safe protocols. Since, the airport achieved Airport of the Year by the Airport Minority Advisory Council (AMAC).

During the height of the pandemic, Bheodari was the most ardent supporter of our mission-critical employees. Having worked his way up through the ranks, he fully appreciates the oftentimes thankless jobs these employees perform that keep the Airport safe and running optimally at all times. Morale never flagged because Bheodari made sure those employees felt valued through hazard pay, special meals, social media posts, intranet spotlight features, and other incentives.

His actions and his directives all reflect his commitment to the three key focus areas of our organisation’s strategic plan: people, purpose and performance.

Jonas Abrahamsson

Jonas Abrahamsson has shown the strength to steer the company towards its long-term sustainable goals, despite the challenges of COVID-19. Abrahamsson has ensured that Swedavia achieved its net zero target for all ten of the airports in 2020 and has continued to support strategic development and innovation to further the cause of sustainable air travel. During 2020, when passenger numbers where down over 90 per cent and a lot of investments were paused, he decided that investments in the company’s net zero target should proceed, allowing Swedavia to become the first net zero airport group by the end of 2020.

Chris Dinsdale

Chris Dinsdale has worked at Budapest Airport since 2015, originally as CFO until March 2021, where he was nominated for the position as CEO. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dinsdale, as CFO of the airport at the time, fought relentlessly to make sure that the company survived the crisis and worked with great commitment to secure the funding of the airport. For example, a voluntary salary cut for the executives and the founding of the Budapest Airport Foundation, which supports blue collar workers who lost their job during the COVID-19 pandemic.

After being nominated to CEO position in March 2021, Dinsdale continues to work closely with the executive team to create a clear COVID-19 recovery strategy for Budapest Airport. This will also mean that we come out stronger of the pandemic and have a clear focus. Dinsdale is an inspiring true leader who helped us all to cope with the very difficult times of the pandemic and I am convinced that he truly deserves this award.

In 2021, 5.9m people have so far travelled though the airport without a single COVID-19 breach

Perth Airport has highlighted new initiatives to promote passenger safety at the facility amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

One of the new technologies is a QR code ordering system with food and beverage partner Mr Yum. The system will allow passengers to pre-order and pay for items on their devices and then pick them up at the terminal, reducing the need for queues during busy periods and providing a fully touchless process.

QR discs will also be available on seating around the food outlets which can also be used to make orders and, while the initiative has been available in terminals 2 and 4 since September 20, the airport intends to roll out the service to all terminals in the future.

Kim Teo, Mr Yum CEO and co-founder, commented: “Mr Yum is proud to partner with Perth Airport to offer an elevated experience to the thousands of people who pass through the airport every day, making it easier for those in a rush to grab a coffee or a bite to eat before boarding.”

In preparation for the planned reopening of international travel to and from Australia , by the end of 2021, the facility is also rolling out a new online shopping platform which will allow customers to purchase products and services including from duty-free. The service can also be used to book access to the Aspire Lounge in T2.

Additionally the airport has introduced new technology in its car parks which will allow drivers to enter without having to touch the entry/exit and pay machines.

Is Perth Safe? Crime Rates & Safety Report

Perth, Australia

Australia : Safety by City

Perth is the capital city of Western Australia and is the most isolated capital city of over 1,000,000 people in the world.

The many uncrowded beaches along the Perth coastline define the lifestyle: Perth is laid-back, quiet, and safe.

Outside the metropolitan area are some unspoiled national parks, unpopulated coastline, and other exciting locations.

Also, travelers can see Kangaroos here.

And you can have a lot of fun with swimming, cycling in parks, go wine tasting, visit Raves and Festivals – if dance music is your thing, many top DJs and electronic music artists will make the trip out to Perth between October and March.

  • Warnings & Dangers in Perth

OVERALL RISK: LOW

Perth is a reasonably safe city. Conventional safety measures are sufficient. Use common sense and do not get into a drunken showdown. To travel the night it is better to use a taxi. You can rely on the police in the city.

TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: MEDIUM

In the daytime, public transport is quite safe. However, it is better not to ride buses at night. Sometimes there are cases of violence and antisocial behavior in them. Taxis are safe and reliable. Choose licensed services or order a car from the application on your smartphone.

PICKPOCKETS RISK: LOW

Pickpockets are not common, but young people, especially when drunk, can have fun this way for fun. Keep valuables with you, watch your bags and don’t leave them unattended. Precious things and original documents are best left in the hotel safe.

NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: MEDIUM

The Perth region is subject to a range of related meteorological hazards — winter storms, summer storms, floods, tropical cyclones, heatwaves, and bushfires. There is also a risk of bites from poisonous insects and animals. Explore the region before your trip here.

MUGGING RISK: LOW

Armed severe robberies are rare in Perth. Usually, they are associated with a showdown of local drug dealers or drunk people. Avoid poorly lit streets and areas remote from the city center. Contact the police if an incident has occurred with you.

TERRORISM RISK: MEDIUM

Terrorist attacks can occur in Perth. It cannot be ruled out that terrorists can attack regions of Australia. Therefore, tourists are advised not to attend mass gatherings of people and religious groups. Always keep in mind your surroundings.

SCAMS RISK: LOW

Most scams involve sending SMS or emails. Tourists usually do not deal with these types of fraud. Also, be careful when withdrawing money from the ATM. Use ATM in banks.

WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: LOW

Women can travel freely in Perth. Especially in the daytime. At night you should avoid being on the streets yourself. It is also better not to sit up in bars and return home by taxi.

  • So... How Safe Is Perth Really?

Perth is considered a reasonably safe city.

The crime rate here ranges from low to medium.

Mainly in the city, there are problems with theft or damage to things, car theft, insults, and vandalism.

The main dangers that an overseas visitor to Perth faces are sunburn and dehydration.

Make sure you cover yourself with SPF 30+ sunscreen and a hat, and preferably a shirt and always keep a bottle of water with you (preferably a liter), especially in the warmer months.

Otherwise, Perth is relatively safe, though its best not to walk alone at night.

Some areas such as Northbridge are also known to be ‘trouble spots’ on weekend nights, and tourists should be careful.

In any case, the police in the city work quickly and efficiently, so if you have any trouble, immediately contact the nearest police station.

Perth’s drivers are increasingly known for being inconsiderate to other drivers on the roads during these times, which also has caused increased delays due to accidents.

Otherwise, the city is quite safe, and if you follow the usual security measures and have common sense, you will not get into trouble.

Avoid poorly lit streets and suburbs of the city.

Use a taxi if you get home late at night.

  • How Does Perth Compare?
  • Useful Information

Australia has maintained a universal visa regime, meaning that every non-citizen in Australia must have a visa. Australia does not issue visas on arrival. Most visas any traveler can get in an electronic way.

The Australian dollar is the currency of Australia. It is signed $ and code AUD. Almost always it abbreviated with the dollar sign ($), with A$ or AU$ sometimes used to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies. It is subdivided into 100 cents.

The best times to visit Perth for ideal weather are mid-March to mid-May and October to January. Average temperatures in Perth vary greatly and the weather feels very enjoyable all year with a low chance of precipitation most of the year.

Perth Airport is an international airport serving Perth. It is the fourth busiest airport in Australia measured by passenger movements. The airport located 12 km from the city center.

Travel Insurance

The travel insurance policy is a must when visiting a foreign country. Make sure you got it before starting your journey, the customs officer may ask for it.

There are no terrorist here bro.

Bruv what safest place on the planet

Perth is a safe city

Perth is a reasonably safe city, it’s the media that’s a problem, going around telling people that Perth has crimes here and there and people believe it. There’s only a few problems around which involve crimes. The only thing that happened was that somebody stole our bike, and saw it through the gate, but that was a lesson which we learnt from: don’t put anything that might attract attention where people from outside can see it. Besides that, Perth is pretty much a safe city, compared to many other places in the world, which is why refugees come to Australia, because they feel safer here.

Perth rarely has any natural disasters.

Getting rolled more likely than getting blown up

Why is Perth’s terrorism risk ‘Medium’ when it has had no terrorist attacks, while Sydney’s is ‘Low’ and it has (bombing in the 1970’s and the Lindt Cafe attack)? Swap the Mugging and Terrorism risk and you’d be more accurate.

Perth to reopen to international travellers in February 2022

Aaron Wong

Miss Margaret River? You'll be able to visit Western Australia once more from 5 February 2022, with no quarantine required.

While Singaporeans can currently visit Australia without quarantine , they’re effectively limited to Sydney and Melbourne. That’s because only New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria (VIC) have reopened (fine- ACT too, but there’s no flight to Canberra), while the rest of the states remain closed.

But today comes some good news: Western Australia (WA), and Perth by extension, will open its borders to international travellers from 5 February 2022 .

safe 2 travel perth airport

Perth already has one of the largest Singaporean populations outside of Singapore, and was a popular destination for Singapore travellers pre-pandemic.

Western Australia to reopen from February 2022

safe 2 travel perth airport

WA today announced that it will ease interstate and international border restrictions from 12.01 a.m on 5 February 2022, reopening the state after almost two years of closure.

The reopening date is based on when WA is expected to hit a 90% fully vaccinated rate for eligible individuals aged 12 years and above. The date has already been locked-in, regardless of this target is actually hit- but further restrictions will remain for regions of WA with <80% fully vaccinated.

International arrivals will be required to:

  • Complete the Australia Travel Declaration at least 72 hours before departure
  • Take a PCR test within 72 hours of departure to Western Australia
  • Take a PCR test within 48 hours of arrival in Western Australia and on Day 6 (the day of arrival is counted as Day 0)

There will be no quarantine requirement for fully vaccinated international arrivals. However unvaccinated international arrivals will continue to have to quarantine for 14 days, either in a designated hotel or a quarantine facility.

The requirement to be fully vaccinated is waived for those aged below 12 . Those aged below 5 will be exempt from COVID-19 testing.

Masks will still be required to be worn in high-risk indoor settings such as:

  • on public transport, taxis or ride share services;
  • at airports and on flights; and
  • by visitors to hospitals, residential aged care, disability care or custodial corrections facilities.

Proof of vaccination will also be required for those aged 16 and above at:

  • venues or events with 1,000 or more patrons;
  • nightclubs;
  • the Crown complex; and
  • the four major stadia (Optus Stadium, RAC Arena, HBF Stadium and HBF Park)

It sounds like WA will be introducing its own version of a vaccine passport, with an app set to be released in early 2022 . There’s no word as to how international visitors will show their proof of vaccination in day to day settings, but one step at a time I suppose.

Flights to/from Perth

Singapore Airlines is currently operating flights to Perth on SQ223 and SQ225, but they’re not open for sale to the general public (probably cargo-only). The earliest flights you can book to Perth are from 1 March 2022 , though I’m sure they’ll bring this forward soon.

From 5 February 2022, VTL flights from Perth have been loaded as follows:

As a reminder, these will appear with a VTL label- don’t book the wrong flights!

safe 2 travel perth airport

There’s no restriction on the flight you can take to Perth, but you’ll need to take a designated VTL flight back to Singapore to enjoy an SHN waiver.

Award costs

If you’re interested in redeeming miles, here’s how much it costs to redeem flights between Singapore and Perth on Singapore Airlines. Flights are currently operated by B787-10s, so there’s only two cabins available.

For a review of the B787-10 Business and Economy Class experience, check out the links below:

  • Review: Singapore Airlines B787-10 Economy Class SIN-ICN
  • Review: Singapore Airlines B787-10 Business Class ICN-SIN

WA will be accepting international travellers from 5 February 2022, which is great news for Singaporeans longing for a visit to Margaret River.

Given how popular Perth is as a destination, I expect we’ll hear more details about updated flight schedules and the all-important VTL flights soon.

Anyone planning travel to Perth?

Guess its still unclear if there is a need for 72hrs isolation just like NSW & VIC?

Aaron Wong

72h isolation is a temporary measure in light of omicron. if it goes on till feb something is very wrong.

Thanks. I hope so, i have flight booked to Sydney late Jan22 for CNY. Hope they dropped the isolation requirement by then…. fingers crossed

Think if wanna go, better go on the day they reopen. They may go into panic when they see numbers spike a week later n shut the borders again…..

Andrew

You quite clearly did not watch the press conference from the WA Government. Measures will be reviewed “4 weeks after the opening date”. Please do not spread misinformation, making everyone panic to go on that day…leave it open for those of us that must go on that day due to personal reasons.

Wow…glad u think i’m that influential or have control over “those of us that must go on that day”…lol

May I know where in the WA Covid-19 website does it say that children under 5 are exempted from testing? I tried to find this information but could not find anything.

Rio Tinto increases COVID-19 screening measures at Perth Airport

MELBOURNE, Australia--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Rio Tinto has introduced further measures to help combat the spread of COVID-19 in Western Australia following the start of rapid screening trials at Perth Airport.

Alongside screening controls at airports including questionnaires and temperature screening, a range of other controls have already been introduced across Rio Tinto operations in the Pilbara region to help minimise transmission risk. This includes social distancing on planes, buses, camps and in light-vehicles, reduced people on site via a roster change and stronger controls on access to sites.

Rio Tinto is now increasing screening measures by introducing a trial of COVID-19 rapid screening at Perth Airport and at the company’s nearby Operations Centre. This will form part of an enhanced five-layer screening process designed to keep the community and the company’s workforce safe. This includes:

  • A health questionnaire - employees will be asked a series of questions a day prior to traveling to screen for potential exposures to COVID-19, consistent with government restrictions on intra-state travel.
  • A face-to-face assessment with a nurse at Perth Airport.
  • Thermal screening – the employee’s temperature is taken via electronic thermometer.
  • This requires a small blood sample taken via a finger pinprick to detect viral related antibodies in the individual’s blood.
  • This screening process is not a test for COVID-19. The detection of any viral-related antibodies requires the individual to self-isolate as a precaution and seek prompt testing at an approved clinic.
  • Those cleared will receive an access band allowing them to board their flight.

Trained medical staff will perform the COVID-19 screening process with oversight by Rio Tinto’s occupational physician. There will also be oversight of the comprehensive research into the COVID-19 screening outcomes. The new measures reflect Rio Tinto’s health and safety obligations under applicable Australian legislation.

The intent is for anyone working on Rio Tinto’s Iron Ore operations to undergo screening including all FIFO employees and contractors returning to work. Essential staff at Rio Tinto’s Operations Centre will also be subject to rapid screening.

Rio Tinto Iron Ore chief executive Chris Salisbury said, “Our number one priority through this period is to protect the health of our employees and communities where we operate. We believe the introduction of rapid screening adds another layer of control to help prevent the transmission of the virus in WA.

“We are very confident in the veracity of our screening process which we strongly believe is an important tool to reduce risk for our communities and our people. This not only allows us to continue operating safely, which is important for the more than 12,000 people we employ, but it also enables us to continue making a strong contribution to the State’s economy.”

Exploring Perth Airport: An Insider’s Guide 2024

' src=

Perth Airport is the fourth-busiest airport in Australia. Located 8 km from the city centre, Perth Airport is the primary hub for international and domestic visitors, with over 14 million passengers annually.

With six terminals plus a General Aviation Precinct, it can be hard to find your way around. This is where this guide comes in. Find out what to expect at Perth Airport, including navigating the airport efficiently, what services and amenities are on offer, and where to rent a car.

This post may contain affiliate links (of companies I book through). This means I may receive a small commission if you book through them. You can read the disclaimer for more information.

Departing from Perth Airport

Departing from Perth Airport is straightforward, with facilities and amenities to make your journey as comfortable as possible. The airport is well organized, with clear signage and helpful staff to guide you through check-in, security screening, and boarding.

You’ll find a small range of shops, restaurants, and cafes in the departure area, as well as lounges for those who require a quieter space to relax or work.

The airport offers a range of services, including baggage storage, currency exchange, and information desks to assist passengers with any queries.

Which Terminal?

Terminals 1 and 2 are located in one building, and Terminals 3 and 4 are a ten-minute drive away. A free transfer bus runs between the two.

The terminal transfer operates every 20 minutes between 6:00 am and 10:00 pm and every 30 minutes between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am.

The airlines that usually depart from Terminal 1 are:

  • Virgin Australia
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Air New Zealand
  • Qatar Airways

Getting to Perth Airport

There are several transportation options available to get to the airport.

If you have a car, you can drive to the airport and park in one of the many car parks available. There are both short-term and long-term parking options, and prices vary depending on the duration of your stay.

You can drop off family and friends at the bays at the front of each terminal. However, these bays are available only for immediate drop-off or pick-up. If you want to stay longer, you can park for up to 4 hours for A$10 in any Long Term car park or the Short Term outside the terminal.

By Taxi or Rideshare

Taxis and rideshare services such as Uber, DiDi, and Ola are readily available in Perth and can take you directly to the airport. The ride can take anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic, and prices vary on the time of day and demand.

Several public bus routes operate to and from Perth Airport, with stops throughout the terminals. The bus fare is affordable, and the journey can take 25 to 45 minutes, depending on the bus route.

The easiest way to plan your journey is with Transperth’s planner .

The Perth Airport Train Station, located near Terminals 1 and 2, offers a convenient way to get to and from the airport.

Train to and from T1/T2

Airport Central Train Station is 18 minutes from Perth Station on the Airport line. Follow signs from the train station along the Skybridge to Terminal 2 or Terminal 1 Domestic & International.

Train to and from T3/T4

The train from Perth Station to Redcliffe Train Station takes 15 minutes and is three minutes from T1 and T2 at Airport Central Train Station.

Redcliffe Train Station is not connected to Terminals 3 and 4, so you should get off and take Bus Route 292 to reach Terminals 3 and 4. This circular service runs between Redcliffe Station and the terminals’ pick-up and drop-off area every 12 minutes during peak times.

Check-in & Departure Lounge

The first point of call when you arrive at the terminal is the check-in area. Find the large monitors that display your flight with the check-in desk number.

Some airlines have self-serve kiosks where you can check in and print your boarding pass (if you haven’t already done it online) and then a bag drop area. Staff are available to help if you need any.

Otherwise, join the check-in queue and present your passport to the desk staff.

Once you have completed the check-in process, you can proceed to the departure lounge.

Passport Control – International

Passing through passport control at Perth International Airport is an efficient and straightforward process. All travellers over 120cm in height travelling with a machine-readable passport can use the Departures Smart Gate , a system that automates the checks usually conducted by a Border Force officer.

People that can’t use the Smart gate will be directed to a Border Force officer for manual processing.

Security Screening

Once the passport has been scanned and checked, you can proceed to the security screening point, where you are required to remove all items from your luggage before sending it through x-ray scanners. Then you must go through body scanners.

Security screening officers may use Explosive Trace Detection (ETD) equipment to test people and their baggage for traces of explosives. This selection process is conducted randomly. You can ask for a pat-down search to be conducted in a private room.

Arriving at Perth Airport

As an arriving international passenger, it is important to adhere to the instructions of the Australian Government Department of Agriculture regarding what must be declared on the incoming passenger card.

The Arrivals Smart Gate system allows eligible travellers to go through passport control with ease, as biometric data and face recognition technology are used in place of a Border Force officer.

Once a traveller has completed inbound passport control, they may proceed to collect their baggage; however, it will be subject to inspection by officers from both the Australian Border Force and the Department of Agriculture. During such inspections, they will look for prohibited, restricted or dutiable goods under Australian law and any biosecurity risk materials such as plant and animal matter.

When travelling, it is important to make your airline or travel agent aware of any special needs you might have. This can include reserving a specific seat on the aircraft, providing wheelchairs or other mobility aids for assistance throughout the airport (from check-in to departure gate and from arrival gate to baggage reclaim), or ensuring the necessary medical clearances are in place before flying.

Airport firefighters set to strike nationally, threatening school holiday travel plans

Wes Garrett stands with his arms crossed between two taller firefighters dressed in navy shirts.

Aviation firefighters at major Australian airports are set to strike on April 15 amid claims from their union that a shortage of aviation fire and rescue firefighters is putting air passengers at risk.

United Firefighters Union Australia (UFUA) says it has leaked documents from employer Airservices Australia showing an "extreme risk" at 13 airports, and "high risk" at 14 others.

The planned work stoppage is due to affect 27 airports around the country and run for 4 hours from 6am.

The action threatens to disrupt school holiday travel plans as students in New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory begin their two-week term break and those in other states return to begin term two.

UFUA has claimed that government-owned air navigation regulator Airservices Australia has failed to address resourcing issues, but the regulator has hit back, saying staffing levels are adequate.

The union's aviation branch secretary, Wes Garrett, told ABC radio the "primary concern" of every aviation firefighter was the "safety of air travellers that they have sworn to protect and the safety of their fellow crew members".

"These leaked documents confirm that Australia's air travellers face a dire risk every time they set foot on an aircraft in Australia, should an incident occur," Mr Garrett said.

"At 13 major airports across Australia, including Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide, the leaked documents confirm that air travellers face extreme risk."

He said air travellers at 14 remaining airports across Australia, including Sydney, Canberra, and Hobart were at "high risk".

Mr Garrett added that the task resource analysis (TRA) of the service showed current staffing numbers were "well below what they ought to be".

"What we say is that the outcomes and risk identified in those processes needs to be reflected in our enterprise agreement," he said.

Two firefighters stand and look at aviation firefighters union secretary Wes Garrett as he speaks.

He said the TRA was an internationally recognised methodology for determining the amount of firefighters, trucks and resources required to protect passengers in the event of a worst-case scenario at an Australian airport.

"Disgracefully, Airservices have known about the dire risk to air travellers should an incident occur since 2022 and have refused to release the documents to the Union or the public," he said.

Mr Garrett said the staffing concerns topped the list of 26 items on a log of claims that were sought to be resolved in the current enterprise bargaining negotiations, which began last October.

"We don't seem to be making any progress whatsoever," he said.

"These resource shortages include a lack of key personnel to operate breathing apparatus, shortages of firefighting agents to suppress multiple incidents, insufficient personnel and vehicles to protect both sides of a crashed aircraft, a lack of personnel for effective fire ground command and control, and a lack of procedural control at Australia's airports."

The union is seeking a 20 per cent pay increase over three years, while Airservices Australia has offered 11.2 per cent over three years.

Mr Garrett said the timing of the strike action had "coincidentally" fallen during school holidays for some states.

"I don't think there is any convenient time for a work stoppage when it comes to aviation and I think that should really actually inspire Airservices to get in and settle the deal as soon as possible so that there aren't any stoppages and there's no inconvenience to the public."

Airservices Australia said the union's action was motivated by its bid for a pay rise as part of the ongoing employment agreement negotiations.

In a statement, Airservices Australia said the dispute had "nothing to do with staffing levels" which were sufficient to meet operational requirements.

It added that the TRAs "do not measure current state operational risk".

"The risk assessments included in the TRA process are based on theoretical scenarios that do not account for the likelihood of an event occurring or reflect the current operational environment," the statement said.

"Airservices conducts operational risk assessments to capture and define the management of risks and manage them to a level that is as low as reasonably practicable, and the TRA documentation states that Airservices' existing processes are both effective and appropriate for current levels of operational risk."

"Airservices has sufficient ARFF personnel to meet our regulatory obligations and is investing $1 billion over the next 10 years in equipment and facilities for our Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) crews."

The statement said the union's bargaining claims would cost the aviation industry and passengers an extra $128 million.

Airservices Australia said it would work with the airlines and airports to maintain safe operations and minimise any impact on the travelling public during the planned work stoppage.

General manager of people and culture at Adelaide Airport Dermot O'Neill said he was unsure "precisely what impact there might be on operations" at the airport, which was about to embark on its busiest month since the pandemic.

"At this stage, it's our intention to keep in touch with Air Services and we will provide any relevant updates to our customers via our social media channels and no doubt airlines will be doing the same thing," he said.

When will solar eclipse reach your town? These maps show path's timing, how long it lasts.

Hundreds of cities in 13 u.s. states fall directly on the april 8 eclipse's path of totality as the moon blocks the sun's disc and ushers in darkness. these interactive maps offer a closer look..

safe 2 travel perth airport

Come Monday, millions of Americans from Texas to Maine will stop what they're doing to step outside and spend a few minutes gazing skyward .

Few celestial events have the power to capture our collective attention the way this upcoming total solar eclipse has managed to do. And for those making time to witness it, two questions are bound to be on their mind : Will totality reach my area and if so, how long will the resulting darkness last?

Most people across the country are bound to experience the eclipse in some form, but only 13 states fall directly on the path of totality, where the moon will appear large enough to shield all but the sun's outermost layer, the corona.

As you make your eclipse-viewing plans, these interactive maps should help you chart the time and duration for when totality will occur in cities along the path.

Solar eclipse experiment: Here's why NASA is launching 3 sounding rockets into space during the total solar eclipse

Total solar eclipse path of totality map

The 115-mile-wide path of totality will pass from southwest to northeast over portions of Mexico the United States and Canada.

Mexico's Pacific coast will be the first location in continental North America to experience totality, which will occur at about 11:07 a.m. PDT,  according to NASA .

As the moon's shadow travels northeast, totality in the U.S. will begin at 1:27 p.m. CDT in Eagle Pass, Texas. From there, the path will cut diagonally across the country before ending around 3:35 p.m. EDT in Lee, Maine.

Remember: If you plan to witness the eclipse, proper eyewear is a must until the eclipse reaches totality, then it can be viewed with the naked eye.

Here's a map of some of the larger cities in each of the 13 states on the path to show how the duration of totality will vary:

Cities, states on the path of totality

All told, nearly 500 cities in 13 U.S. states are located on the eclipse's path of totality. Here are some of the major cities in each of the 13 states:

  • Dallas and San Antonio, Texas
  • Idabel, Oklahoma
  • Poplar Bluff, Missouri
  • Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Paducah, Kentucky
  • Indianapolis and Evansville, Indiana
  • Carbondale, Illinois
  • Cleveland and Toledo, Ohio
  • Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, New York
  • Burlington, Vermont
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire
  • Caribou, Maine
  • Erie, Pennsylvania

This interactive map provides a closer look at cities along the path, when totality will arrive there and how long totality will last:

Eclipse watch parties, festivals

Such a rare event is sure to attract skygazing tourists unlucky enough to live outside the path of totality. Fortunately, many cities that will experience the total eclipse are planning plenty of festivities for tourists and locals alike.

This map , courtesy of Kristian Campana at festivalguidesandreviews.com , includes locations of watch parties, music festivals and more all tied to the eclipse's arrival:

Aviation firefighters to strike after revelations Australian airports at ‘extreme risk’ during emergencies

Leaked risk assessments by Airservices Australia found airports ill-equipped for emergencies due to a lack of firefighting resources

Aviation firefighters will walk off the job amid revelations many of Australia’s airports, including the busiest in the country, are ill-equipped to handle emergencies.

Leaked risk assessments carried out by Airservices Australia – the government body that provides air traffic control and airport firefighting services – reveal that Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide airports were found to be at extreme risk if there was a fire or aircraft incident because of a lack of firefighting resources.

Sydney, Canberra and Hobart were deemed “high risk’’.

The United Firefighters Union of Australia (UFUA) remains locked in tense enterprise agreement negotiations with Airservices Australia and the union has in recent months sought to sound the alarm over a range of issues, including claims that flights have been landing without fire crews – in breach of aviation laws.

Sign up for Guardian Australia’s free morning and afternoon email newsletters for your daily news roundup

The fresh leaked internal documents were revealed by the UFUA, which has warned that its members will conduct a four-hour strike from 6am on 15 April as a result of safety concerns for the public.

While the risk assessments were carried out between 2021 and 2022, the union believes the problems remain.

Aviation leaders are concerned the industrial action could lead to disruptions for travellers, with 15 April coming at the end of the school holiday season.

The Australian Airports Association chief executive, James Goodwin, said the aviation industry as a whole “urges the two parties to come to an agreement to resolve the situation”.

“I would hope any industrial action won’t disrupt the travelling public at a time when the aviation and tourism sectors are rebuilding,” he said.

“Safety remains the priority and airports are ready to implement any contingency plans that might be necessary.”

The secretary of the UFUA aviation branch, Wes Garrett, said Airservices Australia had known of the risk to travellers for two years, given the internal documents, but has publicly denied there are aviation firefighting shortages at airports.

“These leaked documents confirm that Australia’s air travellers face a dire risk every time they set foot on an aircraft in Australia,” Garrett said on Tuesday.

“Clearly this significant and ongoing risk to all Australian air travellers is unacceptable and cannot be allowed to continue.”

The documents show that travellers at 13 airports, including Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide, were at an “extreme risk”, which included a shortage of trucks, both frontline and ground control staff, equipment and procedures.

Travellers at 14 other airports, including Sydney, Canberra and Hobart, were deemed “high risk” with the union saying that while they had more resources they were not enough to guarantee safety.

Some smaller regional airports have also been deemed extreme and high risk.

The documents show the risk assessments evaluate the minimum number of firefighting staff required to manage worst-case scenarios with four categories of risk: low, medium, high and extreme.

The union is calling for changes to the enterprise agreement with Airservices to include new clauses including minimum staffing requirements, set work hours and rostering and changes to meet work health and safety regulations.

“We call on Airservices to return to the bargaining table to address these critical concerns about the safety of Australia’s air travellers,” Garrett said.

An Airservices Australia spokesperson said the union had not yet officially notified it of the planned stoppages and said the action “threatens to cause disruption to the travelling public”.

The spokesperson said the union’s announcement follows notification of an indefinite ban on overtime starting 5 April.

“Over five months of negotiations, Airservices has offered its Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) service crews an 11.2% pay rise over three years, a range of enhanced conditions and no reduction in current conditions, however the UFUAV is demanding a 20% pay rise as part of a range of claims that in total would cost the aviation industry and their passengers an additional $128m.

“Airservices will work with the airlines and airports to maintain safe operations and to minimise any impact on the travelling public as a result of industrial action.”

Concerns about staffing shortages and a rise in bullying have also been levelled against Airservices Australia in recent months, with its chief executive, Jason Harfield, grilled before Senate estimates in February after an incident in which two air traffic controllers calling in sick caused cascading flight delays across the country.

Total solar eclipse April 8, 2024 facts: Path, time and the best places to view

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality.

Scroll down to see the list of U.S. cities where the April 8 total solar eclipse will be visible, the duration of the eclipse in those locations and what time totality will begin, according to GreatAmericanEclipse.com .

"Eclipse Across America," will air live Monday, April 8, beginning at 2 p.m. ET on ABC, ABC News Live, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Disney+ and Hulu as well as network social media platforms.

On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, prompting a mass travel event to the path of totality -- from Texas to Maine and several states and cities in between.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun, according to NASA .

The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path. To discover when to see the solar eclipse in totality or the partial eclipse in locations across the U.S. outside of the path, check out NASA's Eclipse Explorer tool .

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.

But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.

Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .

"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."

Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."

"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.

In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.
