Introduction

Booking a flight is not just about reaching your final destination; it’s about embracing the journey as well. If you’re traveling with KLM, you have the unique opportunity to take advantage of their stopover program. A KLM stopover allows you to break up your journey and explore a new city or country along the way. It’s like having a mini-vacation within your main trip.

So, what exactly is a KLM stopover? It’s when you choose to extend your layover in one of KLM’s hub cities for more than 24 hours. Instead of rushing through the airport and quickly catching your connecting flight, you get to immerse yourself in a new destination and experience its culture, sights, and flavors.

Booking a KLM stopover not only breaks the monotony of long haul flights but also opens up a world of possibilities for exploration. Whether you want to stroll through historic European towns, indulge in exotic cuisine, or marvel at breathtaking natural landscapes, a KLM stopover lets you do it all.

But the benefits of booking a KLM stopover don’t end there. In addition to experiencing a new destination, you can often enjoy added perks such as discounted hotel rates, complimentary city tours, and exclusive travel experiences.

Planning and booking a KLM stopover may seem daunting at first, but fear not! In this article, we will guide you through the process, from searching for stopover flights to selecting your stopover destination and booking your itinerary. We will also provide valuable tips to make the most out of your KLM stopover experience.

So, let’s dive in and discover the world of KLM stopovers, where your journey becomes just as exciting as your destination.

What is a KLM Stopover?

A KLM stopover is a unique opportunity offered by KLM, the Royal Dutch Airlines, that allows travelers to break up their journey and spend some time in a connecting city or country before continuing on to their final destination. Unlike a layover, which is typically a short stop of a few hours, a KLM stopover allows you to extend your stay for more than 24 hours, giving you the chance to explore and immerse yourself in a new destination.

With a KLM stopover, you have the freedom to choose the duration of your stop and customize your travel itinerary based on your preferences and interests. Whether you want to spend a few days, a week, or even longer, KLM provides you with the flexibility to craft a unique travel experience.

So, why would you want to book a KLM stopover? There are several advantages to consider. Firstly, it breaks up the long journey, giving you a chance to rest, recharge, and avoid travel fatigue. It’s an excellent opportunity to stretch your legs, explore a new city, and indulge in local culture, cuisine, and attractions.

Secondly, a KLM stopover allows you to visit destinations that you might not have otherwise considered. Instead of simply transiting through a city, you can now add it to your travel itinerary and make it an integral part of your trip. For example, if you’re traveling from the United States to Bali, you can choose to have a stopover in Amsterdam and explore the charming canals, visit world-class museums like the Van Gogh Museum, or sample delicious Dutch treats.

Lastly, booking a KLM stopover often comes with additional perks and benefits. Depending on your chosen destination, you may have access to discounted hotel rates, complimentary city tours, or exclusive travel experiences. KLM collaborates with local partners to offer special packages and promotions to enhance your stopover experience.

It’s important to note that not all flights and destinations are eligible for a KLM stopover. The availability of stopover options depends on your departure and arrival cities. To find out if you can take advantage of a KLM stopover, you can use KLM’s online booking system or reach out to their customer service for assistance.

In the next section, we will explore how to search for KLM stopover flights and choose the perfect destination for your extended layover.

Benefits of Booking a KLM Stopover

When booking a flight, most people simply consider the quickest and most direct route to their final destination. However, by choosing to include a KLM stopover in your itinerary, you can unlock a wealth of benefits and enhance your travel experience in several ways.

1. Explore a New Destination: A KLM stopover allows you to step out of the airport and explore a new city or country along your journey. Instead of simply transiting through a city, you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in its culture, history, and attractions. Whether it’s wandering through the bustling streets of Paris, marveling at the ancient ruins of Rome, or savoring local cuisine in Bangkok, a KLM stopover lets you temporarily experience the wonders of a new destination.

2. Break Up Long Journeys: Long-haul flights can be exhausting, both physically and mentally. By breaking up your journey with a KLM stopover, you can enjoy a refreshing break and avoid travel fatigue. Instead of spending hours on end in an airplane, you can take a break, relax, and explore a new city at your own pace. This can make your overall travel experience more enjoyable and rejuvenating.

3. Flexibility in Duration: With a KLM stopover, you have the flexibility to choose the duration of your stay. Whether you prefer a short 24-hour stopover or a more extended visit, KLM allows you to customize your itinerary based on your preferences and interests. This flexibility gives you the freedom to plan your travels according to your schedule and make the most of your time in different destinations.

4. Discover Hidden Gems: Stopover destinations are often overlooked by travelers, which means you have the opportunity to discover hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path attractions. These lesser-known spots can provide a unique and more authentic travel experience compared to heavily touristy areas. Venture beyond the usual hotspots and venture into the heart of the city, where you can mingle with locals and uncover the true essence of your stopover destination.

5. Perks and Discounts: In addition to the joy of exploration, booking a KLM stopover can also come with added perks and discounts. Depending on your destination, you may be eligible for discounted hotel rates or complimentary city tours. KLM collaborates with local partners to provide exclusive offers and experiences for stopover travelers, making your visit even more worthwhile.

Overall, booking a KLM stopover not only adds excitement and variety to your journey but also allows you to create lasting memories in new destinations. It gives you the chance to break free from the confines of the airport and fully embrace the adventure of travel. So, the next time you’re planning a trip with KLM, consider adding a stopover and unlock the many benefits that come with it.

How to Search for KLM Stopover Flights

Searching for KLM stopover flights is a straightforward process that can be done using their online booking system or by contacting their customer service. Follow these steps to find the perfect KLM stopover itinerary:

1. Start with Your Origin and Destination: Enter your departure city and final destination into the KLM booking system. This will provide you with a list of available flights for your desired travel dates.

2. Select Multi-City Option: Instead of choosing a standard round-trip or one-way flight, opt for the multi-city option. This allows you to include a stopover in your itinerary.

3. Choose Your Stopover City: Once you’ve selected the multi-city option, you will be prompted to enter the details for your desired stopover. This is where you can select the city or country where you would like to spend your extended layover.

4. Set the Duration: Specify the duration of your stopover. Depending on your preferences and the time you have available, you can choose a short 24-hour layover or a longer stay of several days or more.

5. Refine Your Search: If you have specific preferences or requirements for your stopover, such as preferred airlines, flight times, or specific amenities, you can use the filters provided by the booking system to narrow down your options.

6. Compare and Choose: Once you’ve entered all the necessary information, the booking system will display a list of available options for your KLM stopover flights. Take the time to compare the different itineraries, considering factors such as flight durations, layover times, and overall cost.

7. Book Your Itinerary: Once you’ve found the ideal KLM stopover flight, proceed to book your itinerary by following the prompts provided by the booking system. Make sure to double-check all the details, including departure and arrival times, dates, and any additional services you may require.

It’s important to note that not all flights and destinations may be eligible for a KLM stopover. The availability of stopover options depends on your specific itinerary and the cities you are flying to and from. If you encounter any difficulties or have specific requirements, don’t hesitate to reach out to KLM’s customer service for assistance.

Now that you know how to search for KLM stopover flights, the next step is to select the perfect destination for your extended layover. In the following section, we will explore different factors to consider when choosing your stopover city.

Selecting Your Stopover Destination

Choosing the right stopover destination is an exciting part of planning your KLM stopover. It allows you to add an extra layer of adventure to your journey and explore a new city or country along the way. Here are some factors to consider when selecting your KLM stopover destination:

1. Personal Interests: Consider your interests and preferences when choosing a stopover destination. Are you a history buff, a foodie, or an outdoor enthusiast? Look for a city or country that aligns with your passions and offers activities or attractions that you would love to experience during your stay.

2. Accessibility: Take into account the accessibility of your stopover destination. Look for cities that have convenient transportation options, such as efficient public transportation or easily accessible attractions near the airport. This will make it easier to navigate and maximize your time exploring the city.

3. Cultural Experiences: Consider the cultural experiences that you would like to immerse yourself in during your stopover. Do you want to visit world-renowned museums, explore ancient temples, or indulge in local cuisine? Choose a destination that offers unique cultural experiences that align with your interests.

4. Climate and Seasons: Take note of the climate and seasons of your potential stopover destinations. Depending on the time of year and your preferences, you may want to choose a city that offers pleasant weather or specific seasonal attractions. Consider whether you prefer warmer or cooler climates and plan accordingly.

5. Visa Requirements: Check the visa requirements for your potential stopover destinations. Some countries may require you to obtain a visa in advance, while others may offer visa-free entry or visa-on-arrival options. Make sure you have the necessary documentation and plan your itinerary accordingly.

6. Travel Budget: Consider your travel budget when choosing your stopover destination. Some cities may be more budget-friendly than others in terms of accommodation, dining, and activities. Research the cost of living and potential expenses in your destination to ensure it aligns with your budget.

7. Local Attractions and Highlights: Research the local attractions and highlights of your potential stopover destinations. Look for landmarks, natural wonders, historical sites, or unique experiences that you would like to explore. Consider the proximity of these attractions to your arrival and departure points to ensure you have enough time to visit them.

Remember, the purpose of a stopover is to add an exciting and memorable experience to your journey. Embrace the opportunity to discover a new city or country, and make the most out of your time in your stopover destination.

Once you’ve selected the perfect stopover destination, it’s time to move on to the next step: booking your KLM stopover. In the following section, we will guide you through the process of booking your itinerary.

Billboard ad featuring image of a child on a swing and blue ocean and sky, and bearing slogan 'join us in creating a more sustainable future'

Dutch airline KLM misled customers with vague green claims, court rules

Operator also found by Amsterdam court to have painted ‘overly rosy picture’ of sustainable aviation fuel

The Dutch airline KLM has misled customers with vague environmental claims and painted “an overly rosy picture” of its sustainable aviation fuel, a court has found.

In a greenwashing case brought by the campaign group Fossielvrij, the district court of Amsterdam ruled on Wednesday that KLM had broken the law with misleading advertising in 15 of the 19 environmental statements it assessed. They include claims that the airline is moving towards a “more sustainable” future and statements on its website about the benefits of offsetting a flight.

“Today’s judgment is a landmark victory in the fight against greenwashing,” said Hiske Arts, a campaigner at Fossielvrij. “The court could not have been clearer: companies are not allowed to claim they are tackling dangerous climate change when in reality they are fuelling the crisis.”

Several of the claims KLM made about its environmental ambitions were declared misleading because they were too vague. In relation to a billboard at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport showing a child on a swing, the court ruled that KLM’s statement “join us in creating a more sustainable future” did not explain how flying with it related to any environmental benefit. The impression was reinforced by the background of sky, mountain and water, it said.

A screenshot from KLM’s Fly Responsibly campaign.

The court also took aim at the airline’s presentation of its policies on sustainable aviation fuels, a vital but fledgling solution to the sector’s emissions, and tree-planting, which is sold as a way to offset the emissions from a flight. “These measures only marginally reduce the negative environmental aspects and give the wrong impression that flying with KLM is sustainable,” it ruled.

Four statements that campaigners had criticised were deemed fair to use. The court also said the airline did not have to rectify the incorrect statements or warn customers that aviation is currently not sustainable. But it said that when KLM informed its customers about ambitions to reduce emissions, it must do so “honestly and concretely”.

Campaigners said the court’s verdict was an important victory against greenwashing. but warned it was not enough. “Tackling greenwashing is currently a cat-and-mouse game,” said Rosanne Rootert, a campaigner at Reclame Fossielvrij. “If one misleading campaign is stopped, 10 new ones emerge. And you can only respond once the damage has already been done: people have already seen the commercials.”

A similar point was made by KLM’s lawyer Branda Katan, a professor of corporate litigation at Leiden Law School, before the verdict.

Katan, who is scheduled to give an inaugural lecture at Leiden University on Friday titled: “Sustainability through liability? Don’t get your hopes up”, saidcivil lawsuits were slow and the results only said something about a specific case. “With climate litigation, you grab attention – media attention – and, at least that is the hope, you instil fear in other companies. So interest groups are using it to try to bring about behavioural change.”

Though the air transport sector accounts for only a small fraction of greenhouse gas emissions today, its contribution to climate breakdown is on course to soar as demand rises. The International Energy Agency found last year that growth in aviation activity has historically outpaced improvements in efficiency.

after newsletter promotion

Rootert said the “next logical step” was for the EU to restrict fossil fuel adverts as it had done with tobacco. “A complete ban of fossil advertising, such as for air travel, is the only way to truly eliminate greenwashing by these companies.”

A KLM spokesperson, Marjan Rozemeijer, said the airline had not used the 19 communications addressed in the court case for some time. “We are pleased that the court has ruled that we can continue to communicate with our customers and partners about our approach to making aviation more sustainable. We are continuously learning how best to include them in this.”

She added: “It is good that the court gives us more clarity about what is possible and how we can continue to communicate transparently and honestly about our approach and activities.”

Intrepid Travel Highlights Importance of India For 2030 Strategy— India Report

Bulbul Dhawan , Skift

March 27th, 2024 at 11:00 PM EDT

India is a land of numerous local cultures and experiences, which can substantially enhance Intrepid's offerings for tourists in the country.

The Skift India Newsletter is your go-to platform for all news related to travel, tourism, airlines, and hospitality in India.

Intrepid Travel talked about the importance of India as a destination to the group’s 2030 strategy. The tour operator currently operates 800 trips in the country as part of its offerings that allow travelers to experience the local culture of the destination.

Having operated in India for almost two decades, Intrepid aims to bring in 30,000 travelers to India by 2030, a bold ambition: It represents almost 300% growth. In 2023, Intrepid welcomed 7,500 travelers in India.

Last year, Intrepid CEO James Thornton had said the company was looking to bring more than 12,000 travelers to India in 2024. This would mark the company’s return to pre-pandemic numbers in the country.

Speaking at the Skift India Summit earlier, Intrepid Travel founder and chairman Darrell Wade had said that Intrepid could see themselves playing a part in India’s domestic travel at some point in the future. “While we may not be looking at it for the next two or three years but by 2030, we would,” he said.

India’s domestic air passenger traffic had been 152 million in 2023.

Talking about India, Wade said that while people may tend to gravitate to certain circuits, like the Golden Triangle, wherever possible, Intrepid looks to break that model and get people into a more diversified range of product. “Very often we find people enjoy it more when they’re doing something that they don’t expect to do and didn’t really even know they were signing up for,” he said.

Intrepid also plans to expand into areas, including accommodation and grow its presence in countries, like India.

Intrepid Travel currently operates around 800 trips across the country.

2030 Strategy: The company’s 2030 strategy is aimed at doubling the number of its global customers to 600,000 from 320,000 last year. Additionally, it is seeking to more than double its revenue to $1.3 billion by 2030.

Over 24,000 Weekly Domestic Flights to Take Off in India This Summer

The summer schedule for Indian airlines has been released and it will come into effect from March 31. According to the schedule, 24,275 domestic flights will be operated every week. This marks a 6% increase as compared to the previous year. In the ongoing winter schedule, carriers are operating 23,732 weekly flights.

Budget carriers IndiGo and Akasa Air and full-service sister airlines Air India and Vistara are set to increase the number of flights, while troubled low-cost carrier SpiceJet will be cutting down its weekly departures by over 22%.

The summer schedule includes 125 airports. These also include seven new airports that have been proposed by scheduled carriers, said Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) .

Internationally, Indian carriers will be flying to 37 countries from 27 domestic airports. Scheduled Indian carriers will operate nearly 2,000 weekly international flights.

Singapore Easing Visa Norms for Indians, Expects 1.5 Million Tourists

Singapore is working on seamless and easy visas for Indian travelers, Indian news agency PTI cited a senior Singapore tourism official as saying. The country is also focusing on increasing its hospitality infrastructure including hotel rooms to support an anticipated influx of visitors. It has 72,000 hotel rooms at present, and is working on adding 9,000 more.

The Singapore Tourism Board has not set any target for travelers from India due to the tourism market potential. It has acknowledged that the number in 2024 could reach 1.5 million. This would be higher than the pre-pandemic figure of 1.4 million tourists, and would be a growth of 36% over the 2023 arrival figures.

SpiceJet Settles Liabilities Worth $91 Million

Low cost airline SpiceJet has entered into a settlement agreement with Export Development Canada (EDC) to clear liabilities worth $91 million. This is the carrier’s biggest breakthrough in its financial restructuring so far. With this agreement, the airline is set to take full ownership of 13 EDC-financed Q400 aircraft.

The debt-ridden airline has reached several settlement agreements with its leasing companies, including AerCap, Echelon Ireland Madison One Ltd, and Cross Ocean Partners. As part of its settlements, it recently received three airframes and an engine . SpiceJet is looking to return to full capacity by restoring its grounded fleet.

IndiGo to Fly More International Routes

India’s largest airline IndiGo is planning to double in size by 2030. For this, it is looking to add more international routes and destinations to its network, said CEO Pieter Elbers . The company’s overseas presence is expected to be boosted by A321 XLR aircraft that can join its fleet next year.

In an interview with Indian news agency PTI, Elbers said that the 2030 ambition is to create an airline that would be double of its current size, global reach and footprint. For this, it is looking at more codeshare partnerships. Currently, IndiGo has partnered with British Airways, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airways, Qantas, KLM-AirFrance, American Airline, Virgin Atlantic, and Jetstar.

Hyatt’s India Pipeline 2024: Six Hotels to Open

Two Hyatt Regency hotels are slated to open in Kasauli and Ghaziabad, while the company will open Hyatt Place hotels in Aurangabad and Haridwar. Hyatt Centric Ballygunge Kolkata and Hyatt Centric Hebbal Bengaluru are also in the pipeline.

Impacted routes

On 12 February 2022, we decided to suspend our flights to Kyiv. This suspension was extended until further notice on 24 February 2022, following the closure of Ukrainian airspace.

In light of the current situation in the region, we’ve decided to suspend our flights to and from Russia and our flights through Russian airspace until further notice as of 26 February 2022. As a result, we have suspended our flights to and from Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

Does the flight suspension impact your travel plans? Check your ticket conditions to learn more about your options to rebook or request a refund.

Safety and security of our flights, customers, and crews is an absolute necessity. We always put the safety of passengers and employees first. Choosing safe and optimal routes is a standard part of our daily practice. We’re constantly monitoring the geopolitical situation in all areas we serve, to ensure the highest level of flight safety.

To determine safe flight routes, we use a security management system to analyse risks. For this, we also use information that is shared within the Dutch expert group, including all Dutch airlines, the intelligence services, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NCTV, and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. Our decision not to fly over or to a specific country is based on the most current analysis at that time.

Air France and KLM have temporarily suspended cooperation with Aeroflot, including the suspension of codeshare agreements and frequent flyer partnership.
