Introduction, what car says....

There’s no denying that the world of MPVs is a little jaded, with family-friendly SUVs stealing a lot of the limelight. People carriers such as this Ford Tourneo Courier still have their followers though – and it’s easy to see why.

After all, the best MPVs are practical and easy to drive, while offering low running costs and no-frills packaging.

The Tourneo Courier comes in one spec and with a choice of just two engines: a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel, both with 99bhp and a manual gearbox only.

That makes purchasing a breeze, with no difficult spec levels to contend with and additional features, such as sat-nav and parking sensors, available to add as you desire.

Read on to find out how well the Ford Tourneo Courier fights the MPV corner, and how it stacks up against its main rivals, the Citroën Berlingo  and the  Vauxhall Combo Life .

Performance & drive

What it’s like to drive, and how quiet it is.

Expecting a 99bhp petrol engine to cope with a car that weighs 1320kg might seem optimistic at best, but don’t fear. The Tourneo Courier uses an engine available for the  Ford Focus Estate  and it doesn’t feel out of place in this bigger package.

What Car? Buying a car frequently asked questions

What Car? has a buying service

In fact, it even beats the 128bhp 1.5-litre diesel engine in the rival Vauxhall Combo Life for real-world power and progression.

There's actually a surprising amount of kick from the petrol, especially at low revs, which makes pulling away from traffic lights a breeze. Acceleration remains reasonably strong right up to 4000rpm, and its flexible mature means you don’t have to change down too often makes and overtaking surprisingly easy.

We’ve yet to try the diesel, but it produces a bit more torque than the petrol and should be a good bet if you see yourself regularly lugging a laden Tourneo up steep inclines.

The Tourneo Courier picks up surface imperfections quite readily, especially if they’re sharp. On a particularly poor town road the constant thumping can prove somewhat grating, but once you get on more open roads with gentler undulations, the Tourneo Courier copes rather better and feels generally quite comfortable.

Body lean is also surprisingly well contained for such a tall car, and this, along with grippy handling and accurate steering, makes the Tourneo Courier easy to manage around corners. The steering is pretty accurate but unnecessarily heavy at parking speeds; like the ride, it lightens up and feels better resolved the faster you go.

Ford Tourneo Courier image

Wind and road noise are both noticeable at speed, but the thrummy engine, which is ever present in town, quietens down once you hit a steady 70mph cruise.

Ford Tourneo Courier interior dashboard

The interior layout, fit and finish

There’s no option of electric seat adjustment for the driver in the Ford Tourneo Courier, although manual seat height adjustment is included as standard. The steering wheel adjusts for height but not reach and is set quite far forward, so those with short legs might find it too close.

Visibility is excellent, with an expansive windscreen that stretches high above your field of vision. Wide door mirrors make the car easy to manoeuvre, and its straight-edged, boxy shape allows side and rear windows that are deep, wide and unobscured.

The only trim level for the Tourneo Courier is Zetec. You get a DAB radio, Bluetooth and USB connectivity but not an infotainment screen. Instead, there’s a dock that enables you to set your smartphone into the dashboard, but you can upgrade to a 4.0in digital screen or 6.0in colour touchscreen with sat-nav .

A driver’s armrest and coloured cloth upholstery that give the Tourneo Courier a slightly less utilitarian feel than its Connect stablemate, but the rest of the interior is a riot of scratchy plastics. They are, though, at least durable and easy to clean.

Ford Tourneo Courier interior back seats

Passenger & boot space

How it copes with people and clutter.

Head room in the Ford Tourneo Courier is seriously impressive. It seems to just keep going and going and even the tallest of drivers won’t feel claustrophobic in either the front or rear seats.

Rear leg room is rather more limited, though, and long-legged passengers could find their knees brushing against the front seats. With only a minimal floor hump beneath the centre seat, though, an adult in the rear centre seat has plenty of space for their feet.

The Tourneo Courier’s boot is deceptively large. In terms of length, it’s pretty similar to a family SUV, but there’s nearly 4ft of height if you stack your luggage from floor to ceiling, which means you can get a huge amount in.

What's more, folding down the back seats more than doubles the load capacity, and there’s the option to flip the entire folded seat squab forward to lengthen the flat floor. However, the rear bench is split 60/40, whereas the Citroën Berlingo has a more useful 40/20/40 configuration.

There’s no option of third-row seats on the Tourneo Courier, either. If you need to seat more than five people, see our best seven-seaters page .

Ford Tourneo Courier interior infotainment

Buying & owning

Everyday costs, plus how reliable and safe it is.

The diesel Ford Tourneo Courier costs more than the petrol, but neither will set you back as much as a Citroën Berlingo or Vauxhall Combo Life.

Standard equipment is plentiful, including heated door mirrors, a heated windscreen, hill start assistance, a DAB radio, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring and a leather-trimmed steering wheel. Options include roof rails, front and rear parking sensors, sat-nav and a stop-start function, and all are reasonably priced.

Running costs are also impressive for this type of car. Official fuel economy for the petrol and diesel engines is 48.7mpg and 62.8mpg respectively, while CO2 emissions are also relatively low, at 131g/km and 117g/km, even without stop-start fitted. The Combo Life has better figures, but then it gets stop-start as standard.

Ford came a pretty average 17th out of 32 manufacturers in the 2023  What Car? Reliability Survey . Citroën came 14th while Vauxhall finished in 30th place.

New Ford Tourneo Courier MPV revealed with petrol and EV power

Published: 17 May 2023

Ford Tourneo Courier front three quarter driving, country lane, green paint

► Fresh van-based MPV from Ford ► Petrol model hits the market in 2023 ► EV variant to follow in 2024

Ford has pulled the wraps off the new Tourneo Courier. It’s a five-seat MPV based on the latest Transit Courier panel van – and it’s designed to steal some sales from the Peugeot Rifter and Citroen Berlingo. Like its French foes, it’ll be available with both combustion and electric power, with the petrol model arriving in late 2023 and the EV hitting showrooms in 2024.

It’s the next step in Ford’s ambitious electrification strategy which will see the company introduce nine new electric vehicles before the end of 2024. The upcoming E-Tourneo Courier slots into this plan alongside an all-electric version of the Puma based on the same architecture and the all-new Volkswagen ID.4-based Explorer SUV .

Ford Tourneo Courier rear three quarter driving, country lane, green paint

Ford designed the Tourneo Courier to be a lifestyle vehicle for outdoorsy types. It’s essentially a more spacious alternative to an SUV. Because of this, it’ll be sold in the company’s SUV-inspired Active specification, with features such as rugged body cladding, front and rear scuff plates, roof rails and 17-inch alloy wheels shod in fat tyres.

What’s particularly important about the Tourneo Courier is that it’s based on a brand-new, Ford-designed platform (unlike the Tourneo Connect which is basically a rebadged Volkswagen Caddy). Even more interesting is that, despite the expense of developing the new architecture, a company spokesman told CAR magazine the Courier should be one of the cheapest vehicles in Ford’s line-up. Prices are expected to start from around £24,000 for the petrol model and £34,000 for the EV.

A petrol engine? In these climate-conscious times?

Squashed, flammable dinosaur juice needs to stick around on UK roads for some time yet. Our charging infrastructure is already at breaking point – and Ford knows outdoorsy folks are prepared travel long distances to indulge in their hobbies.

There aren’t any mountains to climb nor oceans to surf in London. For the best results, you need to drive 300 miles north for the former and 300 miles southwest for the latter, which is a nuisance in an EV that can only manage an expected 200 miles between charging stops.

What’s more, the weight of the battery pack means the pure-electric E-Tourneo Courier can only tow a maximum of 700kg, whereas the petrol model can haul up to a tonne. If your active lifestyle includes a particularly large boat, that’s enough to strike the E-Tourneo off your shopping list – and Ford isn’t prepared to throw that business away.

Ford Tourneo Courier front three quarter static, next to a lake, green paint

So, the cheapest version of the Tourneo Courier will be powered by Ford’s familiar 123bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost petrol engine. It’s the same unit found in the Fiesta, Focus and Puma. Like its siblings, the Tourneo Courier will come as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, although a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic will be available as an optional extra.

Ford hasn’t yet confirmed fuel economy and CO2 emissions for the Tourneo Courier’s engine, but the same unit can produce some impressive results in the brand’s other cars. We managed to extract more than 40mpg from a 123bhp Focus without really trying, so this new MPV should prove to be an economical family bus.

Ford has also fitted the Tourneo Courier with some clever fuel saving technology. You get start-stop and an active grille shutter that blanks off the radiator aperture when it isn’t required for cooling, improving the van’s aerodynamics and boosting its fuel economy figure.

What about the electric model?

Unfortunately, Ford also hasn’t disclosed all the powertrain information for the E-Tourneo Courier – but here’s what we know so far. It’ll have a 134bhp electric motor mounted on the front axle and a charging system that can accept DC speeds of up to 100kW.

If you can find a public rapid charger capable of dispensing that much power, Ford reckons the E-Tourneo Courier’s battery will charge from 10–80% capacity in just 35 minutes. Connect the MPV to a 7kW feed at home and the brand’s engineers say it’ll completely recharge overnight.

Ford E-Tourneo Courier, front three quarter driving, grey paint, country lane

We’ve been chatting to some Ford executives behind the scenes to try and plug the gaps in the E-Tourneo Courier’s spec sheet. Bosses have hinted its battery will be sized at around 54kWh, which should provide enough power for a maximum range of 200 miles. Crucially, that’s around 30 miles more than you get in the Peugeot e-Rifter and Citroen e-Berlingo.

It’ll be practical, right?

Obviously. It’s a van with windows. But Ford has made the new Tourneo Courier bigger in every dimension than the old model, meaning there’s even more space inside for people and luggage. The boot, for example, is 175 litres larger at 570 litres while the broader bodyshell has liberated some extra shoulder room for those in the rear.

It’s more than just a box on wheels, though. It’s clever. For example, the boot trims feature a fold-out storage bin designed to hold muddy shoes and enclosed shelves intended to stop small items from pinballing off the plastics. Ford also gave the Courier a tailgate rather than a pair of barn doors because it gives occupants somewhere to shelter from the rain when changing out of hiking gear. Or wet suits. Or one of those Kevlar onesies favoured by daredevil mountain bikers.

The E-Tourneo Courier is also slightly more practical than the petrol model (range notwithstanding). Because the EV doesn’t need a gear stick, Ford has moved all the controls off the centre console and freed up space for a massive storage bin large enough to hold a handbag or a laptop bag. There’s also a 44-litre compartment under the bonnet which Ford says is ideal for holding charging cables.

Currently, the only obvious practicality oversight is that the Tourneo Courier will only be available with five seats from launch, while its rivals from Peugeot and Citroen can be specified with seven.

What about technology?

There’s plenty on offer, although it’s worth noting the EV will come with more standard equipment than the petrol model. The E-Tourneo Courier features a 12-inch digital gauge cluster and a 12-inch touchscreen, both running on Ford’s Sync 4 infotainment software. That’s the same system loaded onto the Ford Mustang Mach-E ’s screens. It brings a host of convenient extras such as cabin pre-conditioning and intelligent route planning that can factor charging stops into your journey.

Ford hasn’t scrimped on the safety kit, either. Standard equipment includes cruise control, lane-keeping assist, traffic sign recognition and automatic high beam assist. Buyers will also be able to choose from a range of optional equipment, including adaptive cruise control with stop and go and a blind spot monitoring system with cross-traffic alert.

Ford Tourneo Courier dashboard and infotainment system, black upholstery

Petrol-powered Tourneo Couriers will come with smaller 8.0-inch infotainment screens as standard, although they’ll still support wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto , as well as over-the-air updates v.

Check back soon. Ford will announce prices and specs for the petrol-powered Tourneo Courier later this year – and we’ll update this page as soon as we get our hands on the info.

New Ford Tourneo Courier 2024 review: small MPV glosses over van origins

The new tourneo courier is now one of ford’s smallest cars, but it still offers plenty of practicality.

ford tourneo courier journey 2020

3.5 out of 5

New car deals logo

It’s not quite the last word in practicality that it promised to be, but the new Tourneo Courier has enough outright space for the cash to find customers. Those who do commit to it will get car-like dynamics enough of the time, and a well-stocked standard equipment list, but they’re likely to find the cabin functional rather than homely or plush. Nor will they be getting a bargain – unless Ford decides to play more aggressively with its finance deals.

Are you ready for ‘new Ford ’? Perhaps more pertinently, is it ready for you? One of the best-known names in the business has spent a lot of the past few years reinventing its line-up. Gone are the Fiesta and Mondeo , and Focus is not long for this earth. So, assuming the Puma small SUV doesn’t do it for you, how is Ford going to satisfy demand for those who want affordable family transport, be it powered by petrol or electricity ?

The Tourneo Courier is meant to be one of the answers to that question. Available to order now as a petrol model, but with a zero-emissions E-Tourneo Courier due later this year , this model takes the smallest of Ford’s van offerings (the Transit Courier sits beneath the Connect and the Custom ) and turns it into a five-seat family do-it-all.

The idea of a van-based MPV is not a new one; this is, in fact, the second generation of Tourneo Courier in this format, and the likes of Stellantis have populated the market over the past few years with the closely related Peugeot Rifter, Citroen Berlingo and Vauxhall Combo Life . The key, it seems, is to deliver enough car-like comfort, with commercial-vehicle levels of practicality and keen pricing.

At launch, the Tourneo Courier is available with a single petrol engine, a 123bhp version of Ford’s 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost that does without the mild- hybrid electrification featured on the same unit in the Puma. It’s available with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic for an extra £1,200.

The Tourneo Courier certainly cuts a distinctive shape – unashamedly van based, but with a conventional bonnet line and a hint of SUV or crossover from certain angles. It’s just over 4.3 metres long, so while this version has grown (to answer, Ford claims, much higher demand for C-segment MPVs), it’s still slightly shorter than Citroen’s Berlingo, the only one of the Stellantis trio still available with combustion power (Rifter and Combo Life both now being electric only). The Dacia Jogger , another possible rival (albeit one with seven seats ), is a full 20cm longer than the new Ford.

From the moment you slide into the Tourneo Courier driver’s seat, you’ll feel like you’re at the wheel of a van, or a close relation thereof. The seats are firm; visibility through the vast windscreen is excellent; the steering wheel angle feels pretty upright and the ceiling seems incredibly high. The dashboard ahead of you contains plenty of useful-looking cubbyholes, including a bespoke clip area designed for smartphone mounts, but is made from rock-hard textured plastic. Pool all of these elements and you could be forgiven for expecting a load-bay bulkhead behind your shoulder, instead of a second row of seats.

Auto Express editor-at-large John McIlroy driving the Ford Tourneo Courier

Pull away, though, and the Tourneo Courier does a half-decent impression of a passenger car. We shouldn’t forget that the underpinnings here are Ford’s Global B platform – the same base as the Fiesta and Puma (the Tourneo shares a production line with the latter) – and there’s typical sophistication to the gearshift, which has a lovely close-knit mechanical action. The steering has both heft and reassuring directness, too, so many of the key elements of Ford DNA have been transposed successfully here.

This is not a car designed to be leant on through corners and yet, even with its supposedly simpler platform, the Tourneo Courier hangs on remarkably well, with body roll pretty nicely contained. There’s not much of a trade-off in ride quality for this composure either, with enough compliance at low speeds around town.

All the indications are that the EcoBoost engine is refined enough at speed, with a fast cruise requiring around 2,000rpm in sixth gear; wind noise drowns it out comfortably. The jury is still out, though, on how the Tourneo Courier would cope with five adults and their luggage; getting up to a higher rate of knots isn’t a rapid process (0-62mph takes a leisurely 13 seconds with the manual transmission) and you need to use that excellent gearbox to flick up and down ratios to maintain progress, even with the vehicle unladen.

We’re surprised, in fact, that Ford has elected to not offer this car with one of the diesel engines from the regular Transit Courier van, since a bit of extra low-down torque might be appreciated by customers who regularly load up for long journeys. Note: Citroen’s Berlingo still offers that as an option.

We did try the Tourneo Courier with its seven-speed dual-clutch auto gearbox and it’s a smooth performer too, with quick shifts (it’s actually a little bit faster to 62mph) and intelligent software that keeps the engine spinning in its powerband, without becoming intrusive.

Auto Express editor-at-large John McIlroy sitting in the Ford Tourneo Courier's back seat

The cabin has plenty of space for four adults, or two grown-ups and three children. There are a couple of Isofix points in the outermost rear seats, but none on the front passenger seat. All of the occupants could wear full Victorian-spec top hats if they choose to, such is the amount of headroom on offer. There’s no smart use of this space (like the Rifter’s central ‘spine’ storage), although there’s an overhead bin above the windscreen that’s handy for coats and smaller items.

The boot is enormous; there’s 570 litres beneath the parcel shelf with the second row of seats in place, and if you fold and flip them forward and measure outright capacity, you’ll end up with a figure north of 2,100 litres. Suffice it to say that it’s a huge load bay that could swallow a domestic fridge or a washing machine – but while there are some neat touches, like a removable drop-down drawer that looks ideal for muddy trainers, and multiple side cubbyholes, there are only two hooks for shopping bags, positioned just beyond the bumper line.

And of course, to gain access to this area, you need to open the enormous rear hatch, which would be a pain in all but the most generous of car-park spaces. A BMW 5 Series Touring -style opening tailgate window would have been a godsend for the ability to throw in the occasional shopping bag.

Buyers get a choice of two trim levels, both of which highlight how far into the car market Ford is hoping to push the Tourneo Courier. Just as with the Puma, the entry point is called Titanium, bringing twin rear sliding doors, climate control, heated door mirrors with powered adjustment, auto wipers and rear privacy glass.

There are 16-inch alloys, heated front seats, a heated windscreen and heated steering wheel, plus front and rear parking sensors with reversing camera, a wireless smartphone charging pad and an eight-inch infotainment system with Ford’s SYNC 4 software and both Android and Apple integration. This version costs from £25,865 with the manual gearbox; frankly, it’s hard to see much justification for spending any more.

Ford Tourneo Courier - boot (rear seats down)

There’s also a more rugged-looking Active edition, which costs from £27,185. For the extra you get exterior styling tweaks, including wheelarch cladding, a different front grille and painted mirror caps, plus sat-nav, 17-inch alloys, adaptive cruise control and a slew of extra driver aids. It also gets a few interior trim embellishments in a bid to lift the dash – but they don’t make a huge difference.

Regardless of trim level, the Tourneo Courier’s digital instrument panel is clear and easy to use, but while Ford’s SYNC 4 software is snappy enough, its interface frequently threatens to overload the real estate of the eight-inch screen. Flicking to Apple or Android doesn’t overcome this issue either, because the core system is still needed for functions like heating and ventilation.

As a bit of context within Ford’s own range, the Puma Titanium, in mild-hybrid form and with a manual gearbox, costs from £25,640 – so it’s clear that Ford sees the Tourneo Courier as a more practical offering alongside the Puma, rather than a cheaper alternative to it.

Indeed, you’ll probably be able to work out which vehicle it’s nudging you towards from the interest rates on both models’ respective finance offers, since this will make a dramatic difference to the monthly payments that most of us use anyway. At the time of writing, a Puma is available with 1.9 per cent APR; the still-new Tourneo Courier has to make do with 7.9 per cent, so it costs about £60 per month more than its style-focused sibling. And if it’s cheap family transport you’re after, the monthly rates on a Dacia Jogger annihilate both Ford models.

The new Ford Tourneo Courier is a proper MPV with petrol and electric powertrains

Chunky looks, proper MPV practicality and options in the engine department. Sounds great

E-Tourneo Courier is latest in the electric line up from Ford. This green one seen driving on a road in a green grassy ravine

Ford has launched the latest addition to its Tourneo people-mover range . The Tourneo Courier is an all-new sibling to the Transit Courier van that'll offer MPV practicality and seating for five. And while the 123bhp 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder version opens for orders this summer, an electric E-Tourneo Courier will be along in the second half of 2024. Touted as the ‘future of Ford’, the electric Tourneo Courier promises a compelling combo of versatility and carbon-free smarts. For the former there's a medley of roof bars, hidden cubbies, practical seat fabric and boot pockets for dirty shoes (how thoughtful). The eco powertrain will feature a 134bhp electric motor and an as yet unspecified battery. Expect it to be around the 55kWh mark though. Ford says that there's 100kW DC charging and the ability to grab 54 miles of range in 10 minutes.  We’re told the exterior, with its short overhangs and boxy shape, has been designed from the ground up with the all-electric powertrain in mind and there's an electric-only shiny grille. There’s also a choice of Normal, Eco and, er, ‘Slippery’ drive modes – which means it should have enough traction to reach all of your favourite lifestyle activities. Inside, Ford tells us there’s more shoulder and head height for all five passengers compared to the previous Tourneo Courier. What's more, the rear seats flip to accommodate bikes, luggage, outdoors clobber and furry friends . Oh, and there’s a 44-litre front trunk in the EV too.  Like TVs in living rooms, the 12-inch central display plays a pivotal role in the lounging experience. The infotainment suite is coupled with a full digital cluster panel, supported by remote over-the-air updates . Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration is standard.

Thoughts on what Ford calls its new 'multi-activity vehicle' folks?

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

ford tourneo courier journey 2020

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
