Etappe 10: parcours is lava en lijkt op lijf Van der Poel geschreven

Na de eerste rustdag mogen de renners in de Tour de France vandaag, in de tiende etappe van Vulcania naar Issoire over 167 kilometer, weer vol aan de bak.

Het peloton, dat zich iets na 13.00 uur in gang zet, rijdt door vulkaangebied en het parcours is geen moment vlak. De vijf gecategoriseerde beklimmingen worden afgewisseld met tal van ongecategoriseerde heuvels, hobbels en glooiingen.

Startplaats is Vulcania, een educatief pretpark dat geheel is gewijd aan vulkanen. Het park is opgezet door Katia en Maurice Krafft, de - in de woorden van Herman van der Zandt - Beyoncé en Jay-Z van de vulkanologie.

Het Franse vulkanologenechtpaar reisde ruim twintig jaar de aarde rond om vulkaanuitbarstingen te observeren en vast te leggen. In totaal bezochten Katia en Maurice driehonderd van de vijfhonderd actieve vulkanen ter wereld, wat genoeg inspiratie gaf voor het themapark en wetenschapsmuseum.

Katia en Maurice Krafft kwamen in 1991 om het leven tijdens de uitbarsting van de Japanse vulkaan Unzen.

Het peloton zal waarschijnlijk weinig oog hebben voor de attracties in Vulcania. Want de etappe wordt lastig genoeg met vier colletjes van de derde en eentje van de tweede categorie. De laatste 25 kilometer gaan wel in licht dalende lijn naar de finish in Issoire.

Aanvallers met goede benen

De klassementsrenners zullen de rit vooral zonder kleerscheuren willen doorkomen, voor de sprinters is er weinig eer te behalen. Het wordt dus vermoedelijk een dag voor aanvallers met goede benen. En dan noemen we, niet voor het eerst deze Tour, Wout van Aert en Mathieu van der Poel als mogelijke kanshebbers op de ritzege.

Beide renners wonnen deze editie nog geen etappe en zullen willen vlammen. Van der Poel zegt over de rit naar Issoire dat dit een van de twee resterende Tourritten is die hem op het lijf is geschreven.

"Ik zou graag eens voor mijn kans gaan. Ik blijf een winnaar op dat vlak." Van der Poel doelt met die uitspraak op het feit dat hij deze Ronde van Frankrijk vooral succesvol is geweest als sprintaantrekker voor ploeggenoot Jasper Philipsen. Met drie etappezeges en een (voorlopige) groene trui als resultaat.

"Voor mij zou de Tour helemaal geslaagd zijn als ik zelf nog een rit zou winnen", zegt de winnaar van Parijs-Roubaix. Hij hoopt mee te zitten in een vlucht die tot de finish weet stand te houden. "Maar het is de Tour en het is heel moeilijk te voorspellen."

Tour de France 2024 Route stage 10: Orléans - Saint-Amand-Monrond

Orléans, which is situated on the Loire, hosted Le Tour on twelve occasions. The last stage start happened in 2001. The race went to Evry, where Erik Zabel sprinted to victory.

That was 23 years ago and another sprint finish is a likely option at the end of the stage to Saint-Amand-Monrond. The route is virtually flat. Echelons are really the only way to thwart a bunch sprint, just like in 2013. That stage was won by Mark Cavendish won de etappe, who powered to victory in a sprint-à-neuf.

The 10th stage stage runs predominantly south. Just after Issoudun, with some 60 kilometres remaining, the route turns southeast and enters exposed terrain. Echelons could be lurking here.

Julian Alaphilippe was born in finishing venue Saint-Amand-Montrond.

Favorieten Tour de France 2023

Zoals steeds is het in de Tour de France weer uitkijken naar de favorieten die een gooi doen naar de eindzege en de gele trui. Ook in de Tour de France 2023 zijn er een aantal kanshebbers die er absoluut zullen willen staan. Wielerkrant houdt u op de hoogte van hoe het hen vergaat in de Tour de France .

Bij de favorieten voor de Tour de France 2023 kijken we in de eerste plaats naar Tadej Pogacar en dat is enigszins opvallend. De Sloveen moest zich in 2022 immers neerleggen bij een tweede plaats en zag dit jaar zijn voorbereiding op de Tour verstoord door een val in Luik-Bastenaken-Luik, met een revalidatie tot gevolg. Pogacar blijft echter een polyvalent supertalent en het nog niet voor een derde keer winnen van de Tour heeft hem enkel extra gemotiveerd. Dat was al duidelijk merkbaar in een imposant voorjaar, waarin hij Parijs-Nice, de Ronde van Vlaanderen, de Amstel Gold Race en de Waalse Pijl won. Daarom zullen alle ogen toch weer grotendeels op hem gericht zijn.

De concurrentie komt opnieuw uit het kamp van Jumbo-Visma, van Jonas Vingegaard . Door Pogacar te verslaan, deed de Deen in 2022 iets wat weinigen voor aanvang van die Tour voor mogelijk gehouden hadden. Vingegaard heeft dus bewezen dat hij het kan en is dit jaar de uitgesproken kopman bij de Nederlandse formatie voor het eindklassement. Dat is nu voor het eerst het geval. Met Wout van Aert krijgt de titelverdediger alvast een meesterknecht van formaat aan zijn zijde. Pogacar en Vingegaard steken er zo bovenuit bij de favorieten voor de Tour de France 2023 dat eindwinst van een andere renner als een grote verrassing beschouwd zou worden.

Outsiders Tour de France 2023

Er zijn uiteraard nog wel andere kanshebbers voor de Tour de France 2023. Die kunnen ondergebracht worden onder de noemer 'outsiders Tour de France 2023'. Klimmers als Mikel Landa, David Gaudu, Enric Mas, Richard Carapaz en Romain Bardet horen zeker in die categorie thuis. Voor Landa, Gaudu en Mas zijn de weinige tijdritkilometers een opportuniteit om hun beste resultaat ooit neer te zetten. Ook voor Carapaz en Bardet is het een voordeel. Sowieso zijn dat twee mannen die het klappen van de zweep in een grote ronde wel kennen. Carapaz won al de Giro en Bardet stond al twee keer op het podium in de Tour de France.

Nog kanshebbers in de Tour de France 2023 zijn renners die zich in andere grote ronden al bewezen hebben en nu mikken op dat stapje hogerop. Voormalig Vueltawinnaar Simon Yates is daar nog altijd naar op zoek en Jai Hindley - vorig jaar de beste in de Giro - zet deze keer alles op de Tour. Ineos Grenadiers is ook een ploeg die altijd voor het klassement gaat en dus wel enkele renners bij de outsiders voor de Tour de France 2023 naar voren kan schuiven. Daniel Felipe Martinez bijvoorbeeld. Een straffe klimmer, maar een gebrek aan regelmaat is vaak een probleem. Wellicht zal het toch van hem moeten komen, aangezien Bernal na zijn revalidatie nog niet de tekenen geeft dat hij zijn beste vorm weer kan benaderen.

Wout van Aert titelverdediger groene trui

Ook altijd interessant is om er de favorieten bij te halen voor de nevenklassementen. De belangrijkste nevenklassementen zijn het puntenklassement en het bergklassement, waarin gestreden zal worden voor respectievelijke de groene en de bolletjestrui. Wout van Aert, de groene man van vorig jaar, maakt dit jaar van de groene trui geen grote doelstelling. Dit omdat Jumbo-Visma volop focust op het geel. Van Aert krijgt wel de vrijheid om in enkele ritten zijn kans te gaan en zou zo alsnog kunnen meedoen voor de puntentrui. Ook Mathieu van der Poel heeft zeker het profiel om hier naar mee te dingen. Peter Sagan is zevenvoudig winnaar van de groene trui, maar zijn beste dagen lijken in het verleden te liggen.

De strijd om de bolletjestrui is altijd moeilijk te voorspellen. De laatste jaren komen steeds meer de mannen die voor het algemeen klassement gaan hiervoor ook in aanmerking. Dan denken we uiteraard in de eerste plaats opnieuw aan Pogacar en Vingegaard.

Wie zijn nu de favorieten voor de Tour de France 2023?

De favorieten voor de Tour de France 2023 zijn Tadej Pogacar en Jonas Vingegaard, met Mikel Landa, David Gaudu, Enric Mas, Romain Bardet, Simon Yates, Jai Hindley en Daniel Felipe Martinez die klaar staan om dat duo te bestoken. Een verrassing kan ook nog komen van een Guillaume Martin, O'Connor, Higuita of Lutsenko. Op 23 juli weten we wie de winnaar is van de Tour de France 2023.

Hello and welcome to Cyclingnews' live coverage of stage 10 of the 2023 Tour de France!

With the first rest day behind us and 12 stages left to race, we head into the second week with three hillier stages before venturing back into the high mountains at the weekend. Today's stage is a 167.2km test from Vulcania, a volcano-themed amusement park, to Issoire. The riders will have five categorised climbs to deal with in the sweltering heat of central France, and the parcours should suit the breakaway specialists. 

Here's a look at the jagged profile of stage 10 which shows how we'll be climbing straight from the flag being waved. There should be an almighty fight for the break once we get started and any team who missed out on the spoils of an electric first week will want to get something out of today. The riders are completing sign-ons and the team presentation in Vulcania with cooling vests a very common choice for the riders on such a hot day. Here's Tony Gallopin (Lidl-Trek) receiving a great reception on stage the day after announcing his retirement.

TODAY'S TOUR DE FRANCE MENU

Here's the key moments to look out for on the route for stage 10: 160.2km to go - Climb: Col de la Moréno (4.8km at 4.7%) 139.9km to go - Climb: Col de Guéry (7.8km at 5%) 107.3km to go - Intermediate sprint: Le Mont-Dore 100.6km to go - Climb: Col de la Croix Saint-Robert (6km at 6.3%) 82.9km to go - Climb: Côte de Saint-Victor-la-Rivière (3km at 5.9%) 28.6km to go - Climb: Côte de la Chapelle-Marcousse (6.5km at 5.6%) Stage finish: Issoire

There are a maximum of 13 king of the mountains points on offer today, so expect Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost) to be in the fight for the break and trying to extend his lead over Felix Gall (AG2R-Citroën). His teammate Magnus Cort is also one of the favourites for the day and Alberto Bettiol could be another option for the American team. This would've been one of the stages they highlighted as a great opportunity before the race, so look out for pink jerseys. 

We're underway from the neutralised start in Vulcania. Issoire here we come. We'll be climbing almost straight away in the heat with a spicy first few kilometres incoming. It's a long neutralised section in the départ fictif with 7.5km of steady riding before the race explodes into life. 

All teams and riders were warming up on the rollers and turbo trainers before the day to get the legs moving before it all kicks off. It's going to be hot, it's going to be hard. Don't miss out on what should be an almighty fight to get into the break of the day.

All smiles for yellow jersey wearer, Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), on the start line today. 

The bunch looks nervous on what is set to be a brutal re-introduction to racing at the  110th Tour de France. The Massif Central will be our arena for battle in the heat. 

There's been some early mechanical issues for Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma) and Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ). 

167.2KM TO GO

Stage 10 of the 2023 Tour de France in officially underway! We'll be climbing straight away on a day without much respite. Christian Prudhomme has waved his flag perfectly on km0 and everyone is looking around for now. 

The Col de la Moréno (4.8km at 4.7%) is first up with most teams obviously interested. Still cagey for now though, with no big attack launched yet. 

Nelson Oliveira (Movistar) has gone off the front with Quinten Hermans (Alpecin-Deceuninck) for company. There's a bigger group of around eight riders chasing onto them. 

Dylan Teuns (Israel-Premier Tech) is the next to try his luck off the front but he is quickly joined by Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), who was one of the big favourites for the day. 

Israel-Premier Tech are clearly keen to make it back-to-back stage wins after Michael Woods triumphed on stage 9 up the Puy de Dôme. Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) is also well towards the front and could be a good pick for the day. 

Van Aert obviously wants to make this move. Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Dstny) has been caught up in a slowing at the back of the bunch on today, his birthday. 

Local lad, Rémi Cavagna (Soudal-QuickStep), will be delighted to have made this early move for now. Of course, the fight for the break is far from over. He's joined by Michał Kwiatkowski, Ion Izagirre (Cofidis), Anthon Charmig (Uno-X) and the Israel duo of Krists Neilands and Corbin Strong. 

160KM TO GO

Charmig crests out first climb at the head of the race and takes the two KOM points with it. We're lined out in the groups behind after such a difficult start. Fabio Jakobsen (Soudal-QuickStep) is already struggling towards the back of the peloton. This will be a horrible day for the sprinters. 

We've got an incredibly strong and limited group of our GC favourites in the second group on the road. This race is split up all over the road. We're going to have the top two favourites for the overall at the head of the day with over 150km left to ride. 

We're over the first climbing test of the day, but it's far from the last. We'll have a small descending section before we get back to work on the Col de Guéry. That rest day is going to feel like it was an age ago with such a brutal stinging of the legs straight from the flag. 

Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) seems to have missed this move with some of his teammates working to reduce a 45 second gap from the third group on the road to the group of favourites. Vingegaard only has Sepp Kuss for company, while Pogačar has Adam Yates and Rafał Majka close behind. What a start. 

Pogačar made a huge effort to bridge the final few metres to the leading group which was curious, as it seems to have put Majka and Yates in difficulty. Behind, Ineos Grenadiers have had a nightmare and missed the move with their big GC favourites. Kwiatkowski is there, but Tom Pidcock (7th overall) and Carlos Rodríguez (4th overall) haven't made it. Panic stations in the group behind for those who've missed it. 

We've split up again in the front with the two GC principals now not at the very front of the race and actually sat 20 seconds behind. Things should all come back together and calm down. 

150KM TO GO

Panic will be over soon as Ben Turner (Ineos Grenadiers) reels back in the yellow jersey group after they knocked off their effort. The break now have a 30 second advantage. 

Van Aert has shot our of the peloton with Victor Campenaerts and the Lidl-Trek duo of Jasper Stuyven and Giulio Ciccone. Stuyven actually got dropped as I typed that, but the other three have made it into the break. No one will want to see that red-bull helmet in their with them. 

Mohorič is the next rider to realise he has to make this move. The Ineos Grenadiers being forced to bring their GC leaders back has given riders in the peloton a second launch pad to bridge the gap. 

The peloton is actually about to bring the break back now. We're all back together and we should have round two any second in this big fight for the break. 

Here's a look at the Puy de Dôme in all its glory as the peloton passes, rather than ascends it on today's stage. Beautiful views throughout central France on show all day today. 

Romain Bardet (DSM-Firmenich) is starting to suffer under the unrelenting pressure of the day's opening 20km. 

Neilands goes again. The Latvian is clearly in fine form today as he's been active from the very start. The peloton are still riding extremely hard behind though, with the GC favourites right toward the fore. Tiesj Benoot (Jumbo-Visma) is giving a lot on the front as one of Vingegaard's few remaining teammates trying to establish some sort of control. 

David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) has been dropped out the back and is believed to be at 1:28 seconds from the race lead. Absolute disaster of a start for the Frenchman. 

There are riders scattered everywhere across the roads. This start has put almost two thirds of the peloton into supreme suffering. Neilands looks in contrast, fantastic at the front. 

Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious) is making his way across to Neilands. We've seen the Dutchman be tremendous at the Tour in his career so he'll be a good companion for Neilands. Poels took the KOM points atop the second classified climb of the day. 

We're onto our second descent of the day and what a sight it is before us. Alaphilippe in full descending flow, panache personified and giving it everything at the head of the race. Loulou putting on a show. He's got Mohorič on his wheel as clearly the only man able to follow him. These two are the absolute finest on the downhills in cycling. 

Is Mohorič using his dropper seat post that he used to aid him win Milan-Sanremo in 2022? 

130KM TO GO

It's still full on in the peloton who sit 12 seconds behind our two leaders. The group containing Gaudu is now posted at close to two minutes. It also contains Bardet and Van Aert, despite them both being two of the instigators of early moves today. 

There are four hopeful chasers trying to bridge across to Mohorič and Alaphilippe on this uncategorised section of climbing: Lilian Calmejane and Georg Zimmermann (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), Oliveira and Neilands. 

Scratch that, we're coming back together again. There's still teams unhappy with the composition and unhappy to let it go. Non-stop racing for nearly 40km now. Kuss is doing a tremendous amount of work for Jumbo in the group which is strange. 

Groupama-FDJ have a full training going to try and bring Gaudu's GC hopes out of the fire in the chasing group. Esteban Chaves (EF Education-EasyPost) has been riding nicely today, always towards the front and looking strong.

Our next group to try contains Skjelmose and Asgreen. There's some snaking on the road and looking around behind in the peloton (or what's left of it) and this group at the front is now working well to build an advantage. 

Philipsen has gestured a revving of a motorcycle in the third group on the road to show just how difficult this start has been. It's still not over as well.

Pogačar is glued to Vingegaard's wheel in this second group on the road. 

120KM TO GO

Ben O'Connor (AG2R-Citroën) is on the attack and looking good as he tries to reach out front group of seven. The Australian is currently 18th on GC. He's got Tejada, Pedrero and Perez for company as they pursue the leaders on the road. 

Alaphilippe is shaking his head and huffing and puffing as he tries to muster up more strength in the group of pursuers. Here's a look at him from his earlier attack with Mohorič. 

DSM-Firmenich and Groupama-FDJ have their near full contingents of riders working on the front in the third group to try and save their GC leaders. They aren't, however, making much of a dent into the leading group and are set to still lose around two minutes as it stands. 

CURRENT SITUATION AT 111KM TO GO

Head of the race: Break containing Chaves, Asgreen, Bilbao, Skjelmose etc. +0:32: Group containing O'Connor and Alaphilippe +1:03: Yellow jersey group with Vingegaard and Pogačar +2:26: Group containing Gaudu and Bardet

Gaudu and Bardet will be delighted that there disadvantage is now only 1:00 with the remnants of the peloton finally somewhat calming. Jumbo have assumed their place at the front and are riding a much more reasonable tempo. The two French GC men should make it back in thanks to their respective teams.

Asgreen takes the intermediate sprint point ahead of Barguil, but Soudal-QuickStep will be much happier to almost have two riders in this front group as the Alaphilippe group closes in on the head of the race. Philipsen shows just how versatile he is to hang onto an absolutely obliterated peloton to take the solitary green jersey point still available. Most of the other sprinters are well out the back by now and will just be hoping to meet the time cut today. 

As we start the Col de la Croix Saint-Robert (6km at 6.3%), Guillame Martin (Cofidis) shoots off the front of the peloton in pursuit of the break. He's done it before and gained lots of time on GC in his history, but a 1:48 gap is quite significant to close on just one climb. 

As we finally calm down at the front, here's a look at how closely our two GC favourites were forced to watch each other in today's electric start. 

O'Connor has attacked away from his chasing group companions to try and ensure he makes the day's break. At the front of the road, Barguil has attacked the break on the climb. Chaves is first to follow as Bilbao paces the group and the rest siphon into his wheel. Asgreen is at the back likely waiting for Alaphilippe. 

104KM TO GO

Asgreen is dropping from the front group. Has he been ordered to go and get his team leader? Or is he simply struggling? He's got the jersey unzipped and this isn't exactly his terrain so perhaps Bilbao has just put him into the red for too long. 

O'Connor has flew across the gap and made it to the front. He looks very very strong. Could this be a return of the legs that saw him win into Tignes two years ago and that saw him podium to Dauphiné last month?

Jumbo-Visma seem to be drilling it on the front as multiple riders are being dropped again, namely Mikkel Bjerg (UAE Team Emirates) and Kevin Geniets (Groupama-FDJ). They clearly aren't too happy with Bilbao's presence in the front as he is only 7:37 back on Vingegaard overall. 

Chavez moves off the front, but he's hunted down by a former king of the mountains winner, Barguil, before the top of the Col de la Croix Saint-Robert (6km at 6.3%). Our second group on the road struggled on the climb and now sit 44 seconds behind. Only O'Connor was strong enough, but look for Alaphilippe to descend full gas to try and close the gap.

Alalphilippe is closing the gap as expected on the descent. He's giving the legs a shake out with Asgreen also working for him on the front. Gap is now at just over 20 seconds. 

The second group on the road has the leaders in their sights and we are close to having a joining together of both our groups of seven. They've toiled away on one of the few bits of flat road today to reach them before the foot of the Côte de Saint-Victor-la-Rivière (3km at 5.9%). 

Chavez attacks almost instantaneously as the catch it made. The Colombian national champion clearly didn't want that big a group around him. On a side note, his jersey is absolutely beautiful. You can see it below in the middle of the group. Asgreen has dropped as a result of this pace increase. 

Chavez is looking great here and has 32 seconds of an advantage already. 

Chavez takes the maximum points atop the Côte de Saint-Victor-la-Rivière (3km at 5.9%). There's now a 50km portion without any categorised climbs, but the parcours is hardly flat and will jag up and down all the way till the foot of the Côte de la Chapelle-Marcousse (6.5km at 5.6%). 

Israel-Premier Tech have got onto the team radio to remind their riders to fuel. After the ridiculous two hours of non-stop racing we had to start stage 10 in the heat, it will be even more important and could be the difference between fighting for the win and blowing up.

The front of the race has all come back together after Chavez realised his solo move wasn't the best option. Asgreen has come back and is still setting tempo for Alaphilippe. 

The peloton are passing through the lovely looking, Besse en Chandesse with a band playing them on. They have maintained the gap to the break at just over 3:00. Bilbao would move up to seventh from 11th if the race was to end right now. 

Alpecin-Deceuninck have moved to the front of the peloton with Silvain Dillier. Are they working to chase the break down to let Van der Poel challenge for the win?

Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno-X) is having some minor mechanical issues at the back of the peloton, but managed to kick his rear mech and pulley-wheel gently and is back on his way to the bunch.

The leaders are currently on the uncategorised Col de la Chamoune. In around 13km, they will start a big descent en route to the foot of our final categorised climb of the stage, the Côte de la Chapelle-Marcousse (6.5km at 5.6%), before descending down into Issoire. 

Jayco-AlUla have now committed a rider on the front of the peloton to help control the gap to the leaders. Simon Yates started the 2:53 ahead of Pello Bilbao, so they won't want to get leapfrogged. The gap to the break is slightly coming down and is now at 2:46. 

Jayco are joined by Alpecin taking up the mantle of working on the stage, one team to protect their GC ambitions and one to try and possibly get the stage win.

It's actually Van der Poel himself who has been put to work, can Philipsen survive all these climbs and sprint for the win?

It's absolutely roasting at the finish line with temperatures around 40 degrees. There is a chance of some thunderstorms and rain also, however. 

How many times has this man attacked today? Neilands moves off the front again with a bold move just before this long descent. 

Van der Poel is chipping away at the advantage with Durbridge and Van Aert also swapping turns on the front. With so much descending left in the stage, the advantage should be in the break's favour. 

Alaphilippe is the next to show his hand before the descent which will be his time to shine. Kwiatkowski isn't far behind. 

Neilands is going to be caught just as the descent starts. Bilbao is an incredible descender and has come to the front to maximise his skill advantage. 

Asgreen and Tejada are struggling to stay in touch on the start to this long descent. 

Van der Poel and Van Aert have actually gapped the peloton and are now riding in tandem 2:22 behind the breakaway. It's slightly confusing given the size of the advantage. 

They've both been the radio, but are pulling through and helping each other for now.  It's like watching the spring Classics all over again. 

Here's a look back at Neilands on the attack almost 100km ago when the stage kicked into life. He's still in the breakaway of the day and alongside teammate Nick Schultz, they have a great chance to win back-to-back stage after Michael Woods' triumph on the Puy de Dôme on Sunday. 

Our superstar duo of Van Aert and Van der Poel have made around 30 seconds of a gap to the peloton, but haven't made much progress on the 2:17 advantage of the now 12-man breakaway. 

We're nearing the final climb of the day, the Côte de la Chapelle-Marcousse (6.5km at 5.6%), on which there is a kilometre which averages over 7%. The best climbers in the group will want to target this sector if they are to drop the punchers riders with them. 

Perez has dropped under the brutal pressure. Skjelmose is struggling at the back of the break now which is surprising. 

Skjlemose hasn't given up and has left Kwiatkowski behind as he tries to rejoin the head of the race. 

Schultz is setting quite the tempo in the break with Neilands in his wheel, when will the Latvian launch? 

Schultz is done and Neilands goes! He's been flying all day long as the group behind him look at each other to decide who's going to chase. He's got a big gap already. 

It's very windy on this section of the climb, so the chasers are all looking for the best position to get some respite. 14 seconds is the gap now to Neilands. Behind, Ineos Grenadiers are taking up the mantle of chasing - Kwiatkowski has been dropped so the stage win is gone, forcing them to want to catch Bilbao and protect Pidcock's seventh place on GC. 

Chavez sets off in pursuit of our lone leader with Bilbao in his wheel, Pedrero, Zimmermann and Alaphilippe are also close. Van der Poel has knocked off his effort with Van Aert riding solo. 

Alaphilippe, Barguil and O'Connor are now all struggling. The former World Champion will try on the descent, but how much time can he make up on Neilands?

The gap to Ineos is out at 3:45 now to Neilands and 3:15 to Bilbao. Lots of work to do all the way to the line if they want to protect Pidcock's seventh place overall and Rodríguez' fourth place. 

Neilands has crossed the Côte de la Chapelle-Marcousse (6.5km at 5.6%) KOM point with an advantage of just under 40 seconds. Bilbao is probably the only man who can descend well enough to have any chance of catching him. 

On the final few hundred metres of the climb that aren't part of the KOM, Neilands has lost around 10 seconds. O'Connor has gone to the front in the chasing group. Will 30 seconds be enough of an advantage on the descent for the Latvian?

Here comes the biggest 22km of Neilands' career as he tries to find glory at the Tour de France. It's not a super technical descent, but more one where power out of the corners and consistency will be very important. He's got five riders trying to chase him down. 

The five chasers have already took eight seconds out of our leaders advantage. He'll have to find something extra if he is to hold them off. It will flatten out in the final few kilometres so he'll need to save something for then. 

Bilbao is leading the group behind, but they are turning off and pulling through in the Spaniard's wheel. Gap at 20 seconds now. 

Speeds are up to 80km/h in the chasing group. They are eating away at his advantage very, very quickly. Alaphilippe's group is at 44 seconds for now with a very strong group of descenders.

We're about to reach our last kicker on the parcours before the final descent and flat run into Issoire. Neilands has 15 seconds on Bilbao and co. with Alaphilippe's group a further 20 seconds back. 

Bilbao is definitely going to gain time on GC, but the big question will be how much? IPT's team car are giving Neilands all the encouragement in the world that he can and will make this move stick to the line. 

Pedrero has been gapped by his four fellow chasers. There are reports of a sprint group around 27 minutes down on the road for now. They'll be doing the calculations behind to ensure they survive the time cut on the line, with tomorrow providing the only chance for the fast men in the second week. 

Neilands fought back strongly on that uphill sector to revive his slimming advantage. His main worry will be once they got onto the flat section and the break can see him. This is going to be touch and go all the way to the line. 

The Latvian is leaving everything out on the road, but the group of five should see him soon and start working better in unison. Will the chasers hesitate and look at each other or work together to get a chance for the victory?

CURRENT SITUATION AT 7KM TO GO

Head of the race - Neilands +0:15 - Chavez, Bilbao, O'Connor, Zimmermann, Pedrero +0:32 - Alaphilippe, Kwiatkowski, Skjelmose, Barguil, 

Neilands is holding more than a 12 second advantage for now, but he has to keep his effort going. It's flatter as we get toward the end of the stage which doesn't work in his favour. 29 years without a Latvian winner at the Tour de France- this would be incredible if he could pull it off. 

It's down to eight seconds now with the group cooperating nicely. Each few hundred metres seems to equal a loss of time for the man out in front. 

Our lone leader seems to be running out of steam with the chasers closing in on his back wheel, what a dramatic finish we have in store. The Alaphilippe group also isn't too far behind. 

Catch made to Neilands, but the dream isn't dead yet. He'll be allowed to sit in and try and muster up one final sprint, but he may be completely empty. 

O'Connor attacks as he knows the sprint doesn't suit him. Bilbao is straight on him with Pedrero close behind. 

Zimmermann closes on his own as Chavez struggles to hold on. There's a brief slowing under the flamme rouge and here we go!

Bilbao looks incredibly strong and its only him and the big German at the front. 

They hesitate, they look around and it's coming back together with 400 metres left. 

Four hours of full gas racing comes down to this. 

STAGE FINISH

Pello Bilbao wins stage 10 of the 2023 Tour de France. What a ride, what a day of racing and it's all for Gino. Chapeau Bilbao. The Spaniard will also leapfrog significant spots in the overall race. There will be quite a few trees planted because of that very ride. 

Bilbao launched his sprint out of Zimmermann's wheel and the German had no response. His legs were brilliant and he couldn't have played it any better. O'Connor was third on a much better day out for the Australian. We started in his home town of Bilbao and he tried to attack the finish on stage 2, but it wasn't to be. Stage 10 was his day, however, his first-ever stage win at the Tour de France. 

Bilbao is sharing a friendly chat with Pogačar and Vingegaard after one of the hardest day of the 2023 Tour de France so far in the sweltering heat of central France.

Here's what an emotional Bilbao said after winning stage 10: "We started the day full focus. Yesterday we checked the first 40 kilometres and we were expecting a hard race day after the rest day and in a critical moment I checked and we were in with five teammates in the first 20 riders so I just wanted to make the right group if it was possible with two riders. Matej [Mohorič] was attacking all the time, also Fred [Wright], Mikel [Landa], Wout [Poels], Jack [Haig]. "Everybody was trying to go, we were not just thinking in anything, just go full, full, full and at one point I saw the guys in Jumbo [Visma] needed to let one group and that was my opportunity, my chance to go. I knew that was going to be difficult before, but I just went for the right moment when everybody was on their limit and then at one point the time gap started to go down so we needed to go full in the front." "Everybody was on the limit, Neilands did an impressive attack. I think he was the strongest one, but he spent a lot of energy with the hot wind in the face. In the back group, we just collaborated in the right way and then in the last 3 kilometres, I knew that [I] was the fastest man in the group, so I just took he control, the responsibility." "I closed the gap with O'Connor first and then, with cold blood, let Zimmermann make his sprint, go on the wheel and just full the last 200 metres without thinking of nothing. And then I crossed the line and I just put out all the energy that I had inside and remembering the reason of this victory." "A special one, for Gino."

A disappointed Krists Neilands won the consolation prize of the combativity award, but it wasn't the stage win he fought so hard for over the final climb and descent. Here's what he said after the stage: "It was a really tough stage. It was hard, it was hot, but it was great to be there on the road and we did a really good race as a team and we were always there in the moves and I think we raced really good and did the maximum we could do today. It just didn't work out." "All eight riders from our team here are able to fight for the stage win from breakaways and that is how we manage it. Also, with Mike Woods' win two days ago this gave us more confidence and motivation."

If you weren't aware, Bilbao also announced pre-Tour that he would be following in the actions of his recently lost teammate Gino Mäder, by donating one Euro for every rider he beats on each stage towards efforts that replant trees in areas of deforestation. This is what Mäder did in previous Grand Tour appearances before his tragic passing at the Tour de Suisse earlier this year. A wonderful gesture that highlights the reason Bilbao was so emotional in taking this special victory. A victory for his former teammate and friend. 

We had some changes in the GC today, mainly due to Bilbao's big time gain, with the Bahrain Victorious rider leapfrogging six places past both the Yates twins, Pidcock, Gaudu, Kuss and Bardet into fifth overall thanks to a 3:03 gain. They've hit the ground running after the rest day and this was the best day of the 2023 Tour de France for Bahrain after not getting much out of the first week. 

The last group of our remaining 169 riders in the race have just crossed the line, seven minutes inside the 41-minute time cut on what was a brutal day from flag to flag from Vulcania to Issoire. It contained Jakobsen, Ewan and riders from their respective lead-out trains. Tomorrow should be their only chance for a while, so recovery will be key tonight.

Tomorrow's stage is one of the final chances for the sprinters before the final stage on the Champs Élysées and runs 179.8km from Clermont-Ferrand to Moulins. There are three category four climbs on the route, but the profile is far from flat and after such a brutal day in the heat today, will the sprinters teams be able to assume control and stop another break battling it out for the win?

Tour de France 2023 Favorieten etappe 12: Avonturiers in de Beaujolais

Net als in de 10e etappe is het terrein geknipt voor klassiekerspecialisten als Van Aert, Van der Poel, Pidcock en Alaphilippe. Maar het is geen klassieker en dus is het koersverloop ook niet te vergelijken. Grote kans dat de winnaar uit de vlucht van de dag komt. Als een van die vier aan boord is, dan is hij uiteraard topfavoriet. Gezien zijn goede klassering in het algemeen klassement, is het niet waarschijnlijk dat Pidcock de ruimte zal krijgen om ten aanval te trekken.

Vanuit Roanne trekken de coureurs de heuvels in die de Loire scheiden van de Rhône. Het begint met een vals plat naar Montigny en na een korte afdaling begint het geklauter op de Côte de Thizy-les-Bourg (4,3 kilometer à 5,6%). Zo gaat het de rest van de dag door met de Col des Ecorbans (2,1 kilometer à 6,9%), Col du Fût d’Avenas (2,6 kilometer à 4,3%), Col de la Casse Froide (5,2 kilometer à 6,1%), Col de la Croix Montmain (5,5 kilometer à 6,1%) en de Col de la Croix Rosier (5,3 kilometer à 7,6%).

Vanaf de Croix Rosier is het nog 26,5 kilometer naar de finish. Dat is grotendeels een afdaling, al zitten er ook wat oplopende stroken tussen. Zoals de Côte de Brouilly, een klimmetje van 1,7 kilometer à 5,2%. Vanaf de top is het nog 13 kilometer naar de finish. Een paar stukken gaan iets steiler naar beneden, maar die afsluitende sectie is grotendeels een aflopend vals plat.

Net als in de 10e etappe valt er voor klassementsrenners geen eer te behalen. En ook nu is het parcours voor sprinters veel te zwaar. Dat maakt de weg vrij voor een geslaagde vlucht van de dag.

Tour de France 2024 Kanshebbers Ranglijst

Drie en een halve maand voor de start van de Tour de France hebben we de grootste kanshebbers voor de gele trui in het peloton gerangschikt.

Dit is de eerste editie van de Bicycling Kanshebbers Ranglijst voor de Tour de France voor mannen in 2024, waarin we de kanshebbers rangschikken in de aanloop naar dé wedstrijd van het jaar. Deze voortdurend bijgewerkte lijst geeft je inzicht in de renners die de beste kans hebben om aan het einde van de Tour op het podium te staan - en hoe ze presteren in de wedstrijden voorafgaand aan juli.

Het is half maart en het seizoen 2024 is in volle gang. En hoewel er momenteel veel prachtige wedstrijden zijn, kijken we ook al reikhalzend uit naar de Tour de France in juli – en de mannen die de grootste kanshebbers zijn om bij La Grande Boucle op het podium te eindigen.

De verwachting is dat de Tour van dit jaar de vier beste grote-ronde-renners van de wielersport samenbrengt: de Deen Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike), winnaar van de laatste twee edities van de Tour; De Sloveen Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), winnaar van de Tour de France 2020 en 2021; De Belg Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step), winnaar van de Vuelta a España 2022; en de Sloveen Primoz Roglic (BORA-hansgrohe), drievoudig winnaar van de Vuelta en winnaar van de Giro d’Italia van vorig jaar.

Elke renner bewandelt een andere weg richting de Tour de France, waarbij ze allemaal wedstrijden combineren met langere trainingskampen – alleen of met hun ploeggenoten. En hoewel sommige van die wegen elkaar tijdens bepaalde wedstrijden in de eerste helft van het seizoen zullen kruisen, zullen ze pas in de Tour allemaal tegelijk rijden.

Jonas Vingegaard

Koersdagen: 11

Overwinningen: 7

Beste resultaat: 1e plaats, algemeen klassement - Tirreno-Adriatico

Volgende wedstrijd: Ronde van Baskenland, 1-6 april

Minder dan een week nadat Tadej Pogačar het peloton in Strade Bianche had gesloopt na een solo-ontsnapping van 81 kilometer, liet de tweevoudig titelverdediger van de Tour zich niet kennen en won zelf met een solo-aanval in etappe 5 van Tirreno-Adriatico.

Net als Pogačar rondde de Deen het werk van zijn ploeggenoten af door aan te vallen op het steilste deel van de San Giacamo-klim, op 29 kilometer van de finish. Hij won de etappe met ruim een minuut voorsprong en pakte de leiding in het algemeen klassement. Om zijn vorm te benadrukken won Vingegaard vervolgens ook etappe 6, opnieuw een bergetappe, deze keer eindigend bovenop de Monte Petrano. Hij won de Italiaanse etappekoers hierdoor met 1:24 voorsprong.

Het seizoen van Vingegaard kende al een indrukwekkende start: eind februari domineerde hij de Spaanse rittenkoers Gran Camiño door drie van de vier etappes en het algemeen klassement te winnen, een herhaling van vorig jaar.

En om het nog erger te maken voor de renners en teams die hem willen verslaan, zien de teamgenoten van Vingegaard er (bijna) net zo sterk uit als hun kopman. De Amerikaan Matteo Jorgenson – nieuw bij de ploeg dit jaar – versloeg twee van de mannen op deze lijst in Parijs-Nice, de Belg Cian Uijtdebroeks – ook een nieuwe aanwinst – werkte hard voor de Deen in de Tirreno en eindigde toch als zevende in het klassement.

Op dit moment is de enige tegenvaller voor Vingegaard het feit dat hij er te sterk uitziet voor begin maart. De Tourstart duurt nog maanden, hoe kan hij zijn huidige vorm behouden of zelf verbeteren? Als hij echt nog niet op zijn best is, dan veel succes voor iedereen die hem in juli wil verslaan. Maar als hij en zijn team te snel in vorm zijn, kan het nog interessant worden.

Tadej Pogacar

Koersdagen: 2

Overwinningen: 1

Beste resultaat: 1e plaats, Strade Bianche

Volgende wedstrijd: Ronde van Catalonië, 18 maart

Het optreden van Vingegaard in de Tirreno was wellicht een reactie op de zege van Pogacar tijdens Strade Bianche. De Sloveen wilde misschien dan weer een statement maken in zijn eerste koers van het seizoen en viel 82 km van de finishaan – en won. Alleen.

In eerste instantie leek het erop dat hij alleen maar versnelde om zijn benen te testen, of misschien om te zien welke van zijn tegenstanders (en dat waren er die dag maar weinig) met hem mee zouden gaan. Maar toen hij eenmaal zag dat hij een flinke voorsprong had, bouwde Pogacar door en bouwde een voorsprong op die op een gegeven moment bijna vier minuten bedroeg. Hij was weg.

Net als Visma-Lease a Bike in Tirreno had het team van Pog fantastisch werk geleverd door de aanval van hun kopman op te zetten, door de kopgroep vóór zijn versnelling terug te halen (de regen en wind hielpen daarbij) zodat tegen de tijd dat de Sloveen zijn aanval had gedaan, niemand nog iets kon doen.

Dat gezegd hebbende, hoewel de aanval zeer indrukwekkend was, is het niet genoeg om hem op onze ranglijst boven de Deen te plaatsen. Ook niet na zijn derde plek in Milaan - San Remo.

De Sloveen verloor de laatste twee Tours van Vingegaard, wat betekent dat hij in de pikorde achter de Deen komt te staan. Hij zal dus iets bijzonders moeten doen om zijn grote rivaal te verslaan.

De volgende wedstrijd van Pogacar is de Ronde van Catalonië, wat waarschijnlijk zijn laatste etappekoers zal zijn voor de Giro in mei, zijn eerste grote doel van het seizoen. Wat ook betekent dat zijn programma heel anders is dan de andere renners op deze lijst.

Remco Evenepoel

Koersdagen: 14

Overwinningen: 4

Beste resultaat: 2e plaats, Algemeen klassement - Parijs-Nice

Sinds het winnen van de Vuelta van 2022 heeft Evenepoel geen grote ronde meer gewonnen. Hij stond vorig jaar eerste in de Giro na een week, maar testte positief op Covid aan de vooravond van de eerste rustdag en ging naar huis.

Ondanks de vroege exit hield hij vast aan zijn plan voor dat seizoen en sloeg de Tour de France over, en keerde hij terug naar de Vuelta in de hoop zijn titel te verdedigen. Helaas gooide een (heel) slechte dag in de Pyreneeën zijn plannen in duigen, dus nam hij genoegen met het winnen van drie etappes en de bergtrui.

Nu gaat hij eindelijk de Tour rijden en heel België gonst van de hoop dat Evenepoel de eerste Belg kan worden sinds 1976 die de Tour wint. Tot nu toe gaat het goed voor de 24-jarige. Hij won zijn eerste wedstrijd van het seizoen, een kleine Spaanse koers, en pakte vervolgens de eindzege in de Volta ao Algarve. Vervolgens Parijs-Nice, waar een paar tegenvallers hem van de hoogste trede van het podium weerhielden. Ten eerste had zijn ploeg een late starttijd in de ploegentijdrit, wat betekende dat ze in de regen moesten rijden.

En vooral aarzelde Evenepoel toen er tegen het einde van etappe 6 een gevaarlijke ontsnapping wegreed. Matteo Jorgenson viel aan met de Deen Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) en de Amerikaan Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates). Het trio finishte met 52 seconden voorsprong op Evenepoel. Evenepoel ontsnapte samen met Jorgenson op de laatste dag, won etappe 8 en schoof op naar de tweede plaats in het eindklassement. Maar het was geen prestatie die vergelijkbaar was met Vingegaard of Pogačar.

Het lastige voor Evenepoel is dat hoe beter hij het doet in aanloop naar de Tour, hoe groter de druk zal zijn. En voor een renner die nog wat winst lijkt te kunnen boeken op mentaal gebied om een wedstrijd vol druk als de Tour de France te winnen, is dat niet eenvoudig.

Zijn volgende wedstrijd is de Ronde van Baskenland. Daar zal hij voor het eerst dit seizoen tegenover Vingegaard staan, een strijd die ons een heel eind zal helpen bepalen of Evenepoel een echte Tourkandidaat is of niet.

Primoz Roglic

Koersdagen: 8

Overwinningen: 0

Beste resultaat: 3e plaats, etappe 7, Parijs-Nice

Nadat hij de strijd om het kopmanschap van Visma's Tour de France-ploeg aan Vingegaard had verloren, stapte de 34-jarige Sloveen afgelopen winter over naar BORA-hansgrohe in de hoop eindelijk de Tour de France te winnen.

Hij bouwt zijn seizoen langzaam op – en hij kan het zich veroorloven dankzij de brede selectie van BORA – wat betekent dat hij minimaal koerst in de aanloop naar de Tour de France. Parijs-Nice was zijn eerste wedstrijd van het seizoen en hij zag er, nou ja, een beetje roestig uit.

Maar hij werd beter naarmate die koers vorderde, met als hoogtepunt een derde plaats op La Madone aan het einde van etappe 7. Hij bleef tot het einde bij de favorieten en kwam over de streep in een viermansgroep met Evenepoel, Skjelmose en Jorgenson, de uiteindelijke winnaar.

Misschien wel het allerbelangrijkste: hij kwam gezond uit de race, wat betekent dat hij terug kan gaan trainen en kan blijven bouwen naar zijn volgende wedstrijd, de Ronde van Baskenland, wat de eerste onderlinge strijd met Vingegaard zal zijn. Als hij dan geen nieuwe stap voorwaarts heeft gezet, kun je ervan uitgaan dat hij gaat dalen op onze ranglijst.

Beste resultaat: 3e plaats, Algemeen klassement - Gran Camiño

Volgende wedstrijd: Volta a Catalunya, 18-24 maart

De voorgaande vier renners zijn de mannen die het meest worden genoemd als de belangrijkste kanshebbers voor de Tour de France 2024, maar wij hebben er nog één in het vizier: iemand die de boel flink zou kunnen opschudden.

In 2019 werd Egan Bernal de derde jongste Tour de France-winnaar in de geschiedenis van diee koers. En we dachten allemaal dat de Colombiaan op het punt stond de wedstrijd het komende decennium te domineren. Maar toen won Pogačar de Tour in 2020 en werd hij de op één na jongste renner die ooit de Tour won, en vervolgens won hij hem opnieuw in 2021. Daarna won Vingegaard in 2022 en verdedigde hij zijn titel in 2023.

Bernal won de Giro in 2021, maar kreeg begin 2022 een levens- en carrièrebedreigend ongeval tijdens een training in Colombia. Niemand wist zeker of hij ooit nog zou koersen, laat staan dat hij een kanshebber zou zijn.

Welnu, nadat hij een groot deel van 2023 gewoon weer renner was geworden – waardoor hij een plek verdiende in het Tour de France-team van INEOS – vertoont hij nu tekenen dat hij misschien opnieuw mee kan strijden voor het Tourpodium.

Hij begon zijn seizoen in Colombia, waar hij zesde en derde werd in de nationale kampioenschappen op de tijdrit en weg. Daarna eindigde hij als vijfde in de Ronde van Colombia en derde in de Gran Camiño.

Vervolgens kwam Parijs-Nice, waar hij één actie deed die ons echt opviel: de Colombiaan viel laat in etappe 1 aan – in slechte weersomstandigheden – en won daarbij een handvol seconden. Tegen het einde van de wedstrijd waren die seconden zinloos: hij eindigde als zevende overall. Maar wat het resultaat niet laat zien, is het feit dat Bernal er weer uitziet als een coureur, iemand met doorzettingsvermogen en grinta - broodnodig om ooit weer een grote ronde te winnen.

Als zijn progressie doorzet, zouden we Bernal echt als podiumkandidaat gaan zien tegen de tijd dat de Tour de France begint. Voor een renner die iets meer dan twee jaar geleden een ongeluk had die zijn leven bijna verwoestte, is dat een ongelooflijk – en bijzonder – vooruitzicht.

Op het vinkentouw

Voorlopig beperken we onze ranglijst tot vijf renners, omdat er niet veel meer zijn met een echte kans om de Tour te winnen of te strijden voor een plek op het podium in Parijs. Maar dat zou de komende weken kunnen veranderen, en er zijn een paar renners die mogelijk de top-5 kunnen halen.

Sepp Kuss is misschien wel de belangrijkste van het rijtje renners die op het vinkentouw zitten om bij de kanshebbers te horen. Natuurlijk zal Vingegaard zijn kopman zijn, maar zodra hij een steek laat vallen (of pech tegenkomt) zal de Amerikaan maar wat graag het stokje overnemen. Dat hij het kan, weten we sinds de Vuelta van vorig jaar.

De Spanjaard Carlos Rodriguez was vorig jaar de best geplaatste renner van INEOS tijdens de Tour. De 23-jarige renner eindigde vorig jaar als vijfde en kende een rustige start van het seizoen; tot nu toe heeft hij de Gran Camiño en Parijs-Nice achter de rug.

We houden ook onze ogen gericht op de Spanjaard Enric Mas , de Ecuadoraan Richard Carapaz en de Britten Tom Pidcock, Adam en Simon Yates .

Puy de Dôme

In de negende etappe is er sinds lange tijd weer een finish op de Puy de Dôme. Welke klimmer gaat zich hier van zijn beste kant laten zien? Deze berg stond voor het laatst in 1988 in het Tour parcours. De top van de uitgedoofde vulkaan is maar vanaf een kant bereikbaar en hoe hoger het gaat, hoe smaller de weg. Dat belooft wat…

Favorieten etappe 11 Tour de France 2023 | Ook de bonken gaan tien dagen Tour inmiddels wel voelen

Na vier dagen rondom Clérmont-Ferrand gaat de Tour de France-karavaan, die inmiddels over de helft van de route is, verder. In de elfde etappe trekken de coureur naar Moulins, waar we waarschijnlijk een sprint krijgen. In de Leiderstrui maakt je wat wijzer!

Parcours etappe 11 Tour de France 2023

Starten doen we nog in Clérmont-Ferrand, de thuisstad van Soudal Quick-Step-coureur Rémi Cavagna. Rondom die plaats verbleven de renners de afgelopen dagen enkele nachten in hetzelfde hotel, wat altijd wel een lekker gegeven is voor de coureurs. Maar nu is het tijd om weer door te gaan, in de richting van Moulins.

De doorsnede van de elfde rit wijst voornamelijk in de richting van één scenario: een sprint. De eerste 25 kilometer zijn vlak, waarna er een korte heuvelachtige fase volgt met de beklimmingen Cote de Chaptuzat-Haut (1,9 km a 5 procent) en Cote du Mercurol (2,9 km 4,6 procent).

Na de tussensprint in Lapeyrouse, na zeventig kilometer, is het echter voornamelijk vlak tot in de finishplaats van deze etappe. Daar steken we op twee kilometer van de finish de rivier Allier over, waarna we rechts afslaan.

Tussen de voorlaatste en de laatste duizend meter zitten dan nog twee vervelende bochtjes in een redelijk smalle passage, waarna de laatste kilometer volledig rechtdoor is op een mooie brede weg. Een mooie spurtersaankomst dus!

Weer etappe 11 Tour de France 2023

De afgelopen dagen was het vooral heel heet in de Tour de France , maar daar komt dinsdag wel wat verandering in. Het kwik lijkt in één etmaal namelijk zo'n 10 graden te gaan dalen, daar er woensdag temperaturen van 26 graden Celsius verwacht worden tussen Clérmont-Ferrand en Moulins. De wind is niet al te stevig aanwezig, terwijl het qua neerslag ook lijkt mee te vallen in de middag.

Favorieten etappe 11 Tour de France 2023

Na de zware beproeving die de dinsdagetappe van de Tour de France geweest zal zijn, is het woensdag normaal gesproken dus aan de rappe mannen. Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) is dan de man die we met stip op één zetten: de Belg klimt goed, sprint goed, kan goed tegen de hitte, heeft een goede lead-out en ziet er nog altijd fris (of moeten we zeggen: goed?) uit. Topfavoriet numero uno !

Dylan Groenewegen en zijn Jayco AlUla-trein zijn in de tweede week aanbeland zonder ritzege en dat zal stilaan beginnen te knagen zijn. De rit naar Moulins lijkt een uitgelezen kans voor de Nederlander om zijn zegeteller te laten draaien, maar ook voor hem geldt: Philipsen zal moeilijk te kloppen zijn, temeer daar hij zeven man heeft die zich volledig voor hem gooien.

Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Dstny) en Fabio Jakobsen (Soudal Quick-Step) hadden het om verschillende redenen heel erg lastig dinsdag, dus naar hen kijken we met een iets groter vraagteken. Dat doen we niet bij Mads Pedersen , de sterke Deense bonk van Lidl-Trek. Die versloeg het gele spurtersgilde op een aankomst heuvelop in Limoges, maar kan hij dat kunstje nogmaals herhalen?

Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious) wist zich in de eerste spurts van deze Tour ook te plaatsen, maar hij zal in zijn eerste Tour de beentjes inmiddels ook wel voelen. Datzelfde geldt voor collega-rappe mannen als Jordi Meeus (BORA-hansgrohe), Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) en Sam Welsford (DSM-Firmenich), die in dit soort krachtsspurts - waar ze het normaal van moeten hebben - na elf dagen mogelijk wel voelen wat de verschillen zijn.

Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma, of mag Christophe Laporte een keer?) en Bryan Coquar d (Cofidis) kunnen die opeenvolging van dagen zeker wel aan, net als oudgedienden Peter Sagan (TotalEnergies) en Alexander Kristoff (Uno-X). Voor hen is het eerder de vraag of ze over de pure snelheid beschikken. Tot slot een aantal outsiders, met Søren Wærenskjold (Uno-X), Luca Mozzato (Arkéa Samsic), Corbin Strong (Israel-Premier Tech) en onze eigen Cees Bol (Astana Qazaqstan Team).

TOTAL: 3492 km

This will be the first Grand Départ in Italy and the 26th that’s taken place abroad  First finale in Nice. Due to the Olympic and Paralympic Games taking place in Paris, the race will not finish in the French capital for the first time.

Two time trials. 25 + 34 = 59km in total, the second of them taking place on the final Monaco>Nice stage. This will be the first time the race has seen a finale of this type for 35 years, the last occasion being the famous Fignon - LeMond duel in 1989.

Apennines (Italy), the Italian and French Alps, Massif Central and Pyrenees will be the mountain ranges on the 2024 Tour route.

The number of countries visited in 2024: Italy, San Marino, Monaco and France. Within France, the race will pass through 7 Regions and 30 departments.

The number of bonus points 8, 5 and 2 bonus seconds go to the first three classified riders, featuring at strategic points along the route (subject to approval by the International Cycling Union)these will have no effect on the points classification. Bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds will be awarded to the first three classified riders at road stage finishes.

Out of a total of 39, the locations or stage towns that are appearing on the Tour map for the first time . In order of appearance: Florence, Rimini, Cesenatico, Bologna, Piacenza, Saint-Vulbas, Gevrey-Chambertin, Colombey-les-Deux-Églises, Évaux-les-Bains, Gruissan, Superdévoluy, Col de la Couillole.

The number of sectors on white roads during stage nine, amounting to 32km in total .

The number of stages: 8 flat, 4 hilly, 7 mountain (with 4 summit finishes at Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d’Adet, Plateau de Beille, Isola 2000, Col de la Couillole), 2 time trials and 2 rest days.

The number of riders who will line up at the start of the Tour, divided into 22 teams of 8 riders each.

The height of the summit of the Bonette pass in the Alps, the highest tarmac road in France, which will be the “roof” of the 2024 Tour.

The total vertical gain during the 2024 Tour de France.

PRIZE MONEY

A total of 2,3 million euros will be awarded to the teams and riders including € 500,000 to the final winner of the overall individual classification .

Virtual L’Etape du Tour de France Series Announced

UPDATE March 26, 2024: in March, Zwift reconfigured these events to be rides with a results screen at the end, instead of standard races. They’ve told us this change was made to make the L’Etape du Tour events feel more like sportives than races.

L’Etape du Tour de France is one of the biggest amateur Gran Fondos in the world, with over 16,000 participants each year. Riders return year after year to take on a full Tour de France mountain stage, and Zwift has a history of working with L’Etape as a training partner.

This year, Zwift is hosting a creative and challenging Virtual L’Etape du Tour de France series which is sure to be very popular with riders. Whether you’re training for the IRL L’Etape or just looking to get some hard racing in, you’ll want to add these events to your calendar!

All the details for the series are below, although some links are not yet active and will be updated as Zwift updates their sites.

Schedule and Routes

This is a monthly series, with events scheduled one week per month. Shorter Prologue races happen midweek, with Grand Fondos on the weekend. Events are scheduled every two hours for maximum availability ( see upcoming events ).

• Going Coastal 1 lap (18.7 km/11.6 miles, 63 m/207′)
• Big Foot Hills , 1 Lap (69.9 km/43.4 miles, 707 m/2,320′)
• Greater London Flat 1 Lap (17.3 km/10.75 miles, 45 m/148′)
• The London Pretzel 1 Lap (56.1 km/34.8 miles, 531 m/1,742′)
• Neon Flats 1 Lap (15 km/9.3 miles, 72 m/236′)
• Country to Coastal 2 Laps (67 km/41.7 miles, 548 m/1,798′)
• R.G.V. 1 Lap (25.1 km/15.6 miles, 107 m/351′)
• Petit Boucle 1 Lap (62 km/38.5 miles, 430 m/1,411′)

Note: there are no make-up weeks in this series.

These are race events, not group rides. But there are no categories, so everyone will start together and ride together until gaps open up and packs form. Pace yourself accordingly!

ZwiftPower GC

You can treat these events as one-off races, competing in them whenever you’d like. However, some riders will compete for the time-based general classification, which ranks riders based on their total time for each stage.

Each month will have a GC competition on ZwiftPower (look under “Leagues”) based on that month’s Prologue and Main Stage events. There will also be an overall GC which includes all four months.

Climb of the Month: Col de la Couillole

This series takes a break in June for obvious reasons, but while we’re on break, the Climb of the Month in the Climb Portal will be Col de la Couillole, the final climb of the IRL L’Etape du Tour de France. At 15.7 kilometers with a rock-steady 7.1% gradient, this is also the finishing climb for stage 20 of the 2024 Tour de France!
