[REVIEW] ‘Star Trek: Horizon’ True To The Trek Universe

star trek horizon imdb

Star Trek: Horizon is the latest in a recent series of fan films. Produced and directed by Tommy Craft (who also takes on many other production roles), and with a solid production team and cast, Star Trek: Horizon should be satisfying to most fans.

Released in February, the project was successfully backed on Kickstarter in May of 2014 and raised $22,600, more than twice its inital goal.

Star Trek: Horizon

Horizon is set in the same era as Star Trek: Enterprise , picking up where that series ended. The film centers on the Discovery , an NX class ship like Archer’s Enterprise , and its crew. Captain Harrison Hawke leads a mostly human crew. The one exception is Lieutenant T’mar, a Romulan defector bringing important tactical information to Starfleet. Horizon covers the Romulan war mentioned in Enterprise , and also takes elements of the Temporal Cold War, bringing that to a conclusion.

'Star Trek: Horizon' Review

The film opens with a prelude featuring the last surviving members of a race legendary in the Star Trek galaxy, the Iconians. They have been defeated by another race that created a super weapon called Horizon. The two Iconians take and hide the weapon so it cannot be used again.

Captain Hawke on the bridge

Captain Hawke on the bridge

The first scene in the present time begins with Discovery racing back to earth to get T’mar and her secrets to Starfleet Command with several Romulan ships in pursuit. They take heavy damage and suffer casualties. The Enterprise makes a cameo here, swooping in to save them at the last moment. Captain Archer’s ship makes several appearances throughout the movie, which Enterprise fans will love. Discovery limps back to space dock to undergo repairs and debrief.

T'mar and Vulcan

T’mar and Vulcan

They learn from T’mar that the Romulans are building a super weapon just two light-years from earth. A fleet of Vulcan and earth ships, including the newly repaired Discovery , head out to find and destroy the weapon, called Horizon. The fleet comes under attack by Romulans, and it’s left to the Discovery to destroy the weapon with their new prototype torpedoes. The torpedoes cause an unexpected spacial rift to form, and Discovery is pulled through.

Romulan

The crew find themselves at the planet Horizon was brought to by the Iconians. While investigating a structure on the surface they are found by Daekon, a Romulan defector from the future and a combatant in the Temporal Cold War. We learn that he is the mysterious man from the future in the Enterprise series. The crew of Discovery works to defeat him and finally completely destroy the weapon, bringing the Temporal Cold War to a close at long last.

Daekon

Overall, the plot and writing of this film are absolutely solid. It strikes the right tone and fits nicely into the Star Trek universe. The story is logical for the time period, the characters fit and make sense being where they are, and nothing seems too fantastical for the setting. Good writing and characters can go a long way toward making up for a lower production value.

Crew on Iconian planet

Crew on Iconian planet

There are some minor issues with the film, but some of my issues could be personal opinion. I found myself getting a bit annoyed with the soft focus and lens flare, and squinting at the screen a lot. That could either be a stylistic choice or a practical one given that the film was shot almost entirely on green screen. The only other real issue I had was that occasionally the acting could be a bit stiff, but overall the cast is good.

Discovery

The CGI/effects generally look good, the costumes fit the time period, and the makeup for the aliens is believable. The writing strikes the right emotional tones, and the characters are as fully realized as they can be within the time limitations of the movie.

Fans of Star Trek: Enterprise will love this film and should definitely give it a try. Those who haven’t seen it or don’t remember it well may get a bit lost and not understand all of the references, but the plot will still mostly make sense. It’s a nice continuation of a series that was cancelled too soon, wraps up some of those storylines, and lets us see more of that time in Starfleet and Federation history.

Why give so much of the plot away? Your first few paragraphs may leave a reader thinking, ‘Well, now that I know what happens in the movie, I don’t actually need to see it.’

These fan films always impress me with their effects but the bottom line is their weak point will always be the acting. At best it’s average, at worst (like some scenes in this trailer) it’s down right excruciating to watch. I guess they’re all trying to emulate Shatners horrible acting and they’re doing a great job. I’ve seen better acting at a Grade 3 Christmas play.

March 27, 2016 at 2:47 am

I don’t agree with you. I’ve seen acting in Trek fan films that was downright cringeworthy, but this isn’t one of those films. For most part the actors in this one did okay, if not better. That’s not to say all scenes were perfect, but it was definitely watchable and enjoyable.

I think you’re letting your own preconceived bias about fan films cloud your judgement concerning this one frankly.

They did ok, but not better. The acting is flat. The only two actors that impacted me with any quality had brief roles…the Vulcan and The Admiral. The acting is poor. And yea there are some cringeworthy ones out there…Of Gods and Men…that was just bad. I watched it for shits…Ill never watch it again lol. Same with Renegades..didnt like the story, did like the random rag tag group of characters they put together, the uniforms were laughable and the sets were terribly designed.

Watching this now, and the one take-away is someone seemed to think using shakey cam is a substitute for good writing. I’m less inclined to blame the actors because I don’t think anyone can could deliver these lines well. It’s an interesting mix of people not acting the way people do, unnatural dialog, long clunky exposition, and the entire cast ranging from meh to downright unlikeable, especially the captain. I don’t think anyone is channeling Shatner here, frankly because there is no charm involved in their performance. They all remind me of T’Pol from Season 1 Enterprise.

April 7, 2016 at 12:45 am

I feel bad re-reading that, because I really didn’t say anything good about it. The effects weren’t bad. It did make feel nostalgic for the NX class of ships.

I know this comment thread is a year old, but I just saw this film for the first time so I figured I’d chime in. Yes, the acting seems poor. But there is a couple reasons for that which you can see in most low budget attempts at film.

The first reason is a minimum use of takes. A multi-million dollar film, or even a television show can afford to pay everyone involved to spend 10-16 hrs a day, sometimes 7 days a week for weeks on end to do even just a minute or two of each scene over and over until they get it just right.

It used to be that the cost of film was a major factor in that too, but with digital filming, that is no longer an issue, so even a small time group of fans can afford takes as long as they can keep everyone there.

Which likely means what they can accomplish on a Saturday or a few evenings during the week. The actors and crew likely all have day jobs, so they cannot commit the time required to give a perfect, polished performance in every scene of a movie like this.

The second major reason is because most of the actors you see in these types of fan films are experienced in stage acting, not acting in front of a camera. It’s a very different style of acting where you have to be more subtle in front of a camera and more melodramatic on a stage.

Stage actors sometimes seem stiff on camera because they are trying to reign in their normal dramatic style, which would look utterly ridiculous on film. Again, with enough takes, they can nail it down just fine (as many stage actors do in big films), but without all of those takes, they have a hard time finding that right balance.

Film is a very unforgiving medium, and so any flaws will really jump out at you. Even the average TV sitcom episode is a mish-mash of hundreds of takes and tries and retries until they get something presentable. A full length film is even more so. And in both cases, the actors are “used to” a specific style of delivery at a certain point.

Finally, I’ve seen some complain about all of the lens flare and blurring. Well, that is to make up for a lack of having full sets and a high-paid well-equipped team of post production editors and the like. Without all of that stuff, it would have looked like it was filmed in your living room.

As it is, yes it’s a bit annoying and odd looking in some parts, but at no point do you get the idea you are anywhere else but on a starship or in some weird alien relic, or wherever it is the director intends you to be at the time. So the effects accomplish their goal.

I think what people need to take from a fan film like this is that there are people who have the ability to make something to this level of excellence for peanuts, and if given a bit more of a budget, could probably make a very good quality film for far less than what studios currently spend on big movies.

We’re at a point now where it is safe to say that most big budget films are just not that good. They are heavy on the effects but are really lacking in a good story. I liked this and many stories I have seen in fan films. Stories that I would love to see done with a big budget.

We’ve finally arrived to the point where technology can make up for a lot of budget deficiencies and there may be a day soon where something like “medium budget” films could start to challenge the old film studios.

March 27, 2016 at 10:54 pm

The acting is rather flat, there is that “something” that is missing. I found it difficult to watch, watched it once for kick like Of Gods and Men, but I doubt I will go back and watch either again. Same goes for Renegades. Im not a fan of Horizons effects either. To bright and fuzzy. Too much glow coming off the ships, I didn’t like the warp effect and far too much green screen everything is fuzz and out of focus behind the actors. I would lump Horizon in with Star Trek Renegades and what I’ve seen of the upcoming Star Trek Captain Pike in the same category, B fan movies. Whatever people might say about the Axanar gang, Prelude to Axanar is a grade A fan flick. Great story, great acting, and the effects…NO ONE outside of Hollywood studio production quality beats Tobias Richter and his ‘The Light Works’ company, amazing work. Aside from Axanar the only other fan film I have my eye on is Pacific 201, it looks to be very a promising and unique Star Trek fan films. I also love the style of Pacific vessel. I get the impression it will be better than Renegades and Horizon. If you have not heard of Pacific 201 yet they have some trailers and production videos on their youtube channel and website. Regardless, kudos to all fan films, they all put a lot of love and passion into them and copious amounts of hard work. Fantastic or meh, peoples opinions will differ, keep em coming!

March 28, 2016 at 5:25 am

ALL fan films suffer unfortunately, it’s not just a Star Trek phenomenon. They are made by amateur fans. There’s nothing wrong with it, I just have a hard time getting past bad acting. And in this case it’s not that it’s terrible, just very wooden by many in the film

Disappointing. Boring; dozed off a few times and only watched about half. (Much) less than stellar acting and directing, especially camera work on close-ups.

April 21, 2016 at 5:04 am

I applaud the accomplishment, but the visual style is a non-starter for me. I couldn’t get through 15 minutes. My eyes are bleeding. Impressive effort that I’m sure I would have no hope of accomplishing myself… but all that said, I’d be a lot more impressed if it was watchable.

Movie seeks to answer the question "What if Star Trek was made by wish.com?"

It feels like someone described to the director what J.J. Abrams did and they tried to replicate it. I really can't express how much I don't like it. The whole shot design makes the movie hard to watch. Feels pretty made for TV.

This is straight-up a fan-made movie so I won't go too hard on it.

The acting is not great but I suppose that just comes with the fan-made territory.

Actually pretty decent costume design.

I think by far my biggest problem with this movie is that its color is everywhere. It's washed out, then it's too dark, then they have random light over…

How to Watch Star Trek in Order: The Complete Series Timeline

The full star trek timeline, explained..

How to Watch Star Trek in Order: The Complete Series Timeline - IGN Image

Ever since 1966’s premiere of the first episode of Star Trek: The Original Series, the entertainment world has never been the same. This franchise that has boldly gone where no property has gone before has captured the hearts and minds of millions around the world and has grown into a space-faring empire of sorts filled with multiple shows, feature length films, comics, merchandise, and so much more. That being said, the amount of Star Trek out in the world can make it tough to know exactly how to watch everything it offers in either chronological or release order so you don’t miss a thing. To help make things easier for you, we’ve created this guide to break down everything you need to know about engaging with this Star Trek journey.

It used to be a bit trickier to track down all the Star Trek shows and movies you’d need to watch to catch up, but Paramount+ has made it a whole lot easier as it has become the home of nearly all the past, present and future Star Trek entries.

So, without further ado, come with us into the final frontier and learn how you can become all caught up with the adventures of Kirk, Picard, Janeway, Sisko, Spock, Pike, Archer, Burnham, and all the others that have made Star Trek so special over the past 56 years.

And, in case you're worried, everything below is a mostly spoiler-free chronological timeline that will not ruin any of any major plot points of anything further on in the timeline. So, you can use this guide as a handy way to catch up without ruining much of the surprise of what’s to come on your adventure! If you’d prefer to watch everything Star Trek as it was released, you’ll find that list below as well!

How to Watch Star Trek in Chronological Order

  • How to Watch Star Trek by Release Order

1. Star Trek: Enterprise (2151-2155)

Star Trek: Enterprise is the earliest entry on our list as it takes place a hundred years before the adventures of Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the crew of Star Trek: The Original Series. The show aired from 2001 to 2005 and starred Scott Bakula as Jonathan Archer, the captain of the Enterprise NX-01. This version of the Enterprise was actually Earth’s first starship that was able to reach warp five.

While the show had its ups and downs, it included a fascinating look at a crew without some of the advanced tech we see in other Star Trek shows, the first contact with various alien species we know and love from the Star Trek universe, and more.

2. Star Trek: Discovery: Seasons 1 and 2 (2256-2258)

star trek horizon imdb

This is where things get a little bit tricky, as the first two seasons of Star Trek: Discovery take place before Star Trek: The Original Series but Seasons 3 and 4 take us boldly to a place we’ve not gone before. We won’t spoil why that’s the case here, but it’s important to note if you want to watch Star Trek in order, you’ll have to do a bit of jumping around from series to movie to series.

As for what Star Trek: Discovery is, it's set the decade before the original and stars Sonequa Martin-Green’s Michael Burnham, a Starfleet Commander who accidentally helps start a war between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire. She gets court-martialed and stripped of her rank following these events and is reassigned to the U.S.S Discovery.

3. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2259-TBD)

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds also begins before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series and is set up by Star Trek: Discovery as its captain, Anson Mount’s Christopher Pike, makes an appearance in its second season. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because Pike first appeared in the original failed pilot episode “The Cage” of Star Trek: The Original Series and would later become James T. Kirk’s predecessor after the original actor, Jefferey Hunter, backed out of the show.

Fast forward all these years later and now we get to learn more about the story of Christopher Pike and many other familiar faces from The Original Series alongside new characters. It’s made even more special as the ship the crew uses is the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, the very same that would soon call Kirk its captain.

4. Star Trek: The Original Series (2265-2269)

star trek horizon imdb

The fourth Star Trek series or movie you should watch in the order is the one that started it all - Star Trek: The Original Series . Created by Gene Roddenberry, this first Star Trek entry would kick off a chain reaction that would end up creating one of the most beloved IPs of all time. However, it almost never made it to that legendary status as its low ratings led to a cancellation order after just three seasons that aired from 1966 to 1969. Luckily, it found great popularity after that and built the foundation for all the Star Trek stories we have today.

Star Trek: The Original Series starred William Shatner as James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Spock, but the rest of the crew would go on to become nearly as iconic as they were. As for what the show was about? Well, we think Kirk said it best during each episode’s opening credits;

“Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise . Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.”

5. Star Trek: The Animated Series (2269-2270)

While Star Trek: The Original Series may have been canceled after just three seasons, its popularity only grew, especially with the help of syndication. Following this welcome development, Gene Roddenberry decided he wanted to continue the adventures of the crew of the Enterprise NCC-1701 in animated form, and he brought back many of the original characters and the actors behind them for another go.

Star Trek: The Animated Series lasted for two seasons from 1973 to 1974 and told even more stories of the Enterprise and its adventures throughout the Milky Way galaxy.

6. Star Trek: The Motion Picture (2270s)

star trek horizon imdb

The first Star Trek film was a very big deal as it brought back the crew of Star Trek: The Original Series after the show was canceled in 1969 after just three seasons. However, even it had a rough road to theaters as Roddenberry initially failed to convince Paramount Pictures it was worth it in 1975. Luckily, the success of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and other factors helped finally convince those in power to make the movie and abandon the plans for a new television series called Star Trek: Phase II, which also would have continued the original story.

In Star Trek: The Motion Picture, James T. Kirk was now an Admiral in Starfleet, and certain events involving a mysterious alien cloud of energy called V’Ger cause him to retake control of a refitted version of the U.S.S. Enterprise with many familiar faces in tow.

7. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (2285)

Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry had a sequel to Star Trek: The Motion Picture written, but Paramount turned it down after the reception to that first film was not what the studio had hoped for. In turn, Paramount removed him from the production and brought in Harve Bennett and Jack B. Sowards to write the script and Nicholas Meyer to direct the film.

The studio’s decision proved to be a successful one as Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is considered by many, including IGN, to be the best Star Trek film. As for the story, it followed the battle between Admiral James T. Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise vs. Ricardo Montalban’ Khan Noonien Singh. Khan is a genetically engineered superhuman and he and his people were exiled by Kirk on a remote planet in the episode ‘Space Seed’ from the original series. In this second film, after being stranded for 15 years, Khan wants revenge.

8. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (2285)

star trek horizon imdb

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock continues the story that began in Wrath of Khan and deals with the aftermath of Spock’s death. While many on the U.S.S. Enterprise thought that was the end for their science officer, Kirk learns that Spock’s spirit/katra is actually living inside the mind of DeForest Kelley’s Dr. McCoy, who has been acting strange ever since the death of his friend. What follows is an adventure that includes a stolen U.S.S. Enterprise, a visit from Spock’s father Sarek, a run-in with Klingons, and so much more.

9. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (2286 and 1986)

While it is undoubtedly great that Kirk and his crew saved Spock, it apparently wasn’t great enough to avoid the consequences that follow stealing and then losing the Enterprise. On their way to answer for their charges, the former crew of the Enterprise discover a threat to Earth that, without spoiling anything, causes them to go back in time to save everything they love. The Voyage Home is a big departure from the previous films as, instead of space, we spend most of our time in 1986’s San Francisco.

10. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (2287)

star trek horizon imdb

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier once again brings back our favorite heroes from Star Trek: The Original Series, but it’s often regarded as one of the weakest films starring Kirk, Spock, McCoy, etc. In this adventure, our crew’s shore leave gets interrupted as they are tasked with going up against the Vulcan Sybok, who himself is on the hunt for God in the middle of the galaxy.

11. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (2293)

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is the final movie starring the entire cast of Star Trek: The Original Series, and it puts the Klingons front and center. After a mining catastrophe destroys the Klingon moon of Praxis and threatens the Klingon’s homeworld, Klingon Chancellor Gorkon is forced to abandon his species' love of war in an effort to seek peace with the Federation. What follows is an adventure that calls back to the fall of the Soviet Union and the Berlin Wall and serves as a wonderful send-off to characters we’ve come to know and love since 1966, even though some will thankfully appear in future installments.

12. Star Trek: The Next Generation (2364-2370)

star trek horizon imdb

After you make it through all six of the Star Trek: The Original Series movies, it’s time to start what many consider the best Star Trek series of all time - Star Trek: The Next Generation . The series, which starred Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, ran from 1987 through 1994 with 178 episodes over seven seasons.

There are so many iconic characters and moments in The Next Generation, including William Riker, Data, Worf, Geordi La Forge, Deanna Troi, and Dr. Beverly Crusher, and many of these beloved faces would return for Star Trek: Picard, which served as a continuation of this story.

While we are once again on the U.S.S. Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation, this story takes place a century after the events of Star Trek: The Original Series. However, there may just be a few familiar faces that pop up from time to time.

13. Star Trek Generations (2293)

While Star Trek Generations is the first film featuring the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew, it also features a team-up that many had dreamed of for years and years between Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Captain James T. Kirk.

Our heroes are facing off against an El-Aurian named Dr. Tolian Soran, who will do whatever is necessary to return to an extra-dimensional realm known as the Nexus. Without spoiling anything, these events lead to a meeting with these two legendary captains and a heartfelt-at-times send-off to The Original Series, even though not every character returned that we wished could have.

14. Star Trek: First Contact (2373)

star trek horizon imdb

Star Trek: First Contact was not only the second film featuring the crew from Star Trek: The Next Generation, but it also served as the motion picture directorial debut for William Riker actor Jonathan Frakes. In this film, the terrifying Borg take center stage and force our heroes to travel back in time to stop them from conquering Earth and assimilating the entire human race.

This movie picks up on the continuing trauma caused by Jean-Luc Picard getting assimilated in the series and becoming Locutus of Borg, and we are also treated to the first warp flight in Star Trek’s history, a shout-out to Deep Space Nine, and more.

15. Star Trek: Insurrection (2375)

Star Trek: Insurrection, which unfortunately ranked last on our list of the best Star Trek movies, is the third film starring the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew and followed a story involving an alien race that lives on a planet with more-or-less makes them invincible due to its rejuvenating properties. This alien race, known as the Ba’Ku, are being threatened by not only another alien race called the Son’a, but also the Federation. Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his crew disobey Federation orders in hopes to save the peaceful Ba’Ku, and while it sounds like an interesting premise, many said it felt too much like an extended episode of the series instead of a big blockbuster film.

16. Star Trek: Nemesis (2379)

star trek horizon imdb

The final Star Trek: The Next Generation movie is Star Trek: Nemesis , and it also isn’t looked at as one of the best. There are bright parts in the film, including Tom Hardy’s Shinzon who is first thought to be a Romulan praetor before it’s revealed he is a clone of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, but it also features a lot of retreaded ground. There are some great moments between our favorite TNG characters, but it’s not quite the goodbye many had hoped for. Luckily, this won’t be the last we’ll see of them.

17. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (2369-2375)

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is the fourth Star Trek series and it ran from 1993 to 1999 with 176 episodes over seven seasons. Deep Space Nine was also the first Star Trek series to be created without the direct involvement of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, but instead with Rick Berman and Michael Piller. Furthermore, it was the first series to begin when another Star Trek Series - The Next Generation - was still on the air.

The connections between The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine don’t end there, as there were a ton of callbacks to TNG in Deep Space Nine, and characters like Worf and Miles O’Brien played a big part in the series. Other TNG characters popped up from time to time, including Captain Jean-Luc Picard, and certain Deep Space Nine characters also showed their faces in TNG.

Deep Space Nine was a big departure from the Star Trek series that came before, as it not only took place mostly on a space station - the titular Deep Space Nine - but it was the first to star an African American as its central character in Avery Brooks’ Captain Benjamin Sisko.

Deep Space Nine was located in a very interesting part of the Milky Way Galaxy as it was right next to a wormhole, and the series was also filled with conflict between the Cardassians and Bajorans, the war between the Federation and the Dominion, and much more.

18. Star Trek: Voyager (2371-2378)

star trek horizon imdb

Star Trek: Voyager is the fifth Star Trek series and it ran from 1995 to 2001 with 172 episodes over seven seasons. Star Trek: Voyager begins its journey at Deep Space Nine, and then it follows the tale of Kate Mulgrew’s Captain Kathryn Janeway (the first female leading character in Star Trek history!) and her crew getting lost and stranded in the faraway Delta Quadrant.

The episodes and adventures that follow all see the team fighting for one goal: getting home. Being so far away from the Alpha Quadrant we were so used to letting Star Trek be very creative in its storytelling and give us situations and alien races we’d never encountered before.

That doesn’t mean it was all unfamiliar, however, as the Borg became a huge threat in the later seasons. It’s a good thing too, as that led to the introduction of Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine, a character who would continue on to appear in Star Trek: Picard and become a fan favorite.

19. Star Trek: Lower Decks (2380-TBD)

Star Trek: Lower Decks debuted in 2020 and was the first animated series to make it to air since 1973’s Star Trek: The Animated Series. Alongside having that feather in its cap, it also sets itself apart by choosing to focus more on the lower lever crew instead of the captain and senior staff.

This leads to many fun adventures that may not be as high stakes as the other stories, but are no less entertaining. There have already been three seasons of Star Trek: Lower Decks, and the fourth season is set to arrive later this summer.

The series is also worth a watch as it is having a crossover with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds that will mix the worlds of live-action and animation.

20. Star Trek: Prodigy (2383-TBD)

Star Trek: Prodigy was the first fully 3D animated Star Trek series ever and told a story that began five years after the U.S.S. Voyager found its way back home to Earth. In this series, which was aimed for kids, a group of young aliens find an abandoned Starfleet ship called the U.S.S. Protostar and attempt to make it to Starfleet and the Alpha Quadrant from the Delta Quadrant.

Voyager fans will be delighted to know that Kate Mulgrew returns as Kathryn Janeway in this animated series, but not only as herself. She is also an Emergency Training Holographic Advisor that was based on the likeness of the former captain of the U.S.S. Voyager.

The second season of Star Trek: Prodigy was set to arrive later this year, but it was not only canceled in June, but also removed from Paramount+. There is still hope this show may find a second life on another streaming service or network.

21. Star Trek: Picard (2399-2402)

star trek horizon imdb

Star Trek: Picard is the… well… next generation of Star Trek: The Next Generation as it brings back not only Partick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard, but also many of his former crew members from the beloved series. The story is set 20 years after the events of Star Trek Nemesis and we find Picard retired from Starfleet and living at his family’s vineyard in France.

Without spoiling anything, certain events get one of our favorite captains back to work and take him on an adventure through space and time over three seasons and 30 episodes.

The show had its ups and downs, but the third season, in our opinion, stuck the landing and gave us an “emotional, exciting, and ultimately fun journey for Jean-Luc and his family - both old and new - that gives the character the send-off that he has long deserved.”

22. Star Trek: Discovery: Seasons 3 and 4 (3188-TBD)

While Star Trek: Discovery begins around 10 years before Star Trek: The Original Series, the show jumps more than 900 years into the future into the 32nd Century following the events of the second season. The Federation is not in great shape and Captain Michael Burnham and her crew work to bring it back to what it once was.

Star Trek: Discovery is set to end after the upcoming fifth season, which will debut on Paramount+ in 2024.

Upcoming Star Trek TV Shows: What's Ahead For The Sci-Fi Franchise

Here's what's ahead for Star Trek.

Michael Burnham on Star Trek: Discovery

It’s a golden era for Star Trek tv shows, as the franchise is churning out more content than ever before. Fans with a Paramount+ subscription can stream a plethora of old and new content from one of the greatest sci-fi franchises of all time.

There’s a ton of new Star Trek content coming in the future, including the debut of a new show as well as the return of all the ones fans already know well. For those who need a breakdown of what all to expect, look no further because here’s where and when all the new Trek will arrive in 2023 and beyond. There’s even some information on planned shows that aren’t quite ready yet, but hopefully, we’ll see them soon enough.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 - Finished April 20th, 2023

The final season of Star Trek: Picard has concluded, and the fans already want more. There have been calls for a spinoff titled Star Trek: Legacy , and for the franchise to bring back showrunner Terry Matalas to run it. Who knows if it'll happen, but one thing I do know is people will be talking about the success of Picard Season 3 and how it brought back together The Next Generation crew for a long time.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 - Ended August 10th, 2023

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is back for another season on Paramount+. Season 2 promised to raise the bar after its acclaimed Season 1, and so far, it’s lived up to the hype. In addition to major changes to canon and some unexpected romance , we were treated to an amazing   crossover with Lower Decks . It’s not all fun and games, though, as a rescue mission from the Gorn put a lot of lives at risk . We did see Montgomery Scott come aboard the Enterprise though, so hopefully he'll stick around in Season 3.

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 - Coming In 2024

Paramount+ originally renewed Star Trek: Prodigy for Season 2, but announced later that it had been canceled alongside other shows on the platform. While the news was a bummer to many and encouraged responses from stars like Kate Mulgrew , there is a silver lining. After some talk with other companies, Paramount managed to negotiate a deal where the series will transition over to Netflix , and Season 2 will release over there. At this time, it's unknown whether or not this will lead to more seasons of Prodigy , but fans are thankful they'll at least get to see the season that was being worked on coming up in 2024.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - Premiering On April 4th 2024

Captain Michael Burnham and the crew are back, and based on what we've seen and heard about Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 so far, some changes are on the way. Season 5 will see the crew race against others in an attempt to secure an ancient power, and will apparently have a tonal shift that will skew more toward action and adventure. We also learned that this coming season will be the final adventure , as Paramount+ decided to end the series after this coming season. The final season will kick off in April and, fingers crossed, leave an avenue open for more stories with these characters in the 32nd century.

Section 31 Movie - Production Underway

Section 31 was one of the first Star Trek spinoffs announced after Discovery , and yet it took the longest to get off the ground. The series was supposed to Michelle Yeoh ’s Phillipa Georgiou and her efforts in the secret ops Starfleet faction that does the jobs that others in the organization would rather not know about. Other former Discovery stars, like Shazad Latif, were involved at one point, but some believed the odds of it happening aren't great after Michelle Yeoh's Oscar win .

It turns out Yeoh was interested in making it happen, and Paramount+ decided to alter the idea to a movie . Fans are excited about the project all the same, and ready to see Michelle Yeoh back in her role. Production on the film is officially underway, and it's looking like a premiere sometime in late 2024 to 2025 is likely.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3- Production Underway

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds filmed Season 1 and 2 right after one another, and apparently Paramount+ was so high on the series it decided to go ahead and green light Season 3 soon after. The series was in production for a while but paused during the WGA Writers’ Strike . Production resumed and is happening alongside Star Trek: Section 31, but it's still looking like we won't see the new season until at least 2025.

Starfleet Academy - Production Starting In 2024

Alex Kurtzman revealed not long ago that Star Trek is actively working on another new live-action series , and it’s going to be set at Starfleet Academy. Of course, we don’t know exactly what era this series is set to take place during or who is going to star in it yet. We don’t really know much of anything, though it’s worth noting that Star Trek: Discovery did write off its character Tilly when she took an offer at Starfleet Academy. The episode where that happened seemed like it could be a backdoor pilot for the show, but again, we have no idea. We do know that the writer's room is underway, but details are scant beyond that.

As shown above, there’s still a ton of Star Trek on the way in 2024, and beyond. The only way to watch these shows is with a Paramount+ subscription , which is totally worth picking up with the increasing amount of shows and movies available to watch.

Fan Film Review: There’s A Lot Of Love In ‘Star Trek: First Frontier’

star trek horizon imdb

| October 27, 2020 | By: Dénes House 92 comments so far

Star Trek: First Frontier is an ambitious, full-length, fan-produced film focusing on Robert April, the first captain of the original USS Enterprise. The fan film, with over 900,000 views on YouTube since it was released month, strikes many of the notes that made Star Trek: The Original Series so special. And even though Star Trek: First Frontier is not exactly a bases-loaded home run, it swings for the fences with such gusto—including building an 11-foot model of the USS Enterprise for visual effects shots—that it’s impossible not to love it. This production was not crowdfunded, but it still breaks many of the fan film guidelines set out by CBS in recent years. However, as its principal photography was all completed before the guidelines were set in place, the team behind it hopes that the movie is “grandfathered” in as a result.

“Even when you were in diapers, you used to look at the night sky, and talk about those distant stars and galaxies, and tell me how far they were away. You read all about it in your science book. You’d say, when I’m grown up, they won’t be so far” – John April

Star Trek: First Frontier follows Captain Robert April as he returns from a dangerous mission in which he saved the lives of dozens of his crewmates, but all he can see in his mind’s eye are the people he was unable to save. The guilt of it manifests as a post-traumatic stress disorder, and though he puts up a strong front, he does not feel able to return to the stars that have drawn him onward since he was a child. “I am broken!” April says to his wife, Sarah. “I am not the man I once was! I have no idea how to be that man again.”

But April is pressed back into service by a series of attacks by the mysterious alien race, the Sa’ryn: bug-eyed, ’50s sci-fi-style monsters whose only motivation is destruction. “They have evolved to be cruel,” one character explains. “To become more vicious, to terrorize. That is what they do.” The Sa’ryn have been awakened from hibernation by Starfleet explorers and have taken some officers captive, including April’s sister. April is enlisted to take the newly built Enterprise out to find and rescue the hostages and to figure out how to stop the Sa’ryn’s deadly rampage through the galaxy.

There’s a lot to love in First Frontier . The project was the brainchild of director Kenneth Smith, who penned the story but instead of casting himself in a lead role, brought in a number of professionals. Robert Pralgo ( The Vampire Diaries ) plays Robert April as an intelligent but tormented man, learning to come to grips with his limitations. Tara Ochs ( Nashville ) is fantastic as Sarah April, a brilliant doctor who loves her husband but cannot figure out how to give him the help that he needs. The standout performance is by veteran character actor Barry Corbin ( Northern Exposure ). In the small role of April’s father John, he gives Robert the folksy inspirational speech that reignites his passion for space. However, other performances are on an uneven par, as with other fan productions.

The costumes are superb, looking like a gentle upgrade to the uniforms from “The Cage” and “Where No Man Has Gone Before” without being a complete redesign. The sets are convincing, for the most part duplicating the pilot-era Enterprise interiors in excellent detail. The cinematography is solid with the exception of a few out-of-focus patches, taking a cue from Jerry Finnerman’s iconic imagery from TOS but dialing down some of the colors to suit a more modern palette. The score is borrowed directly from James Horner’s compositions for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , which at points seems to handcuff the action, as though the film was shot and cut to match the existing score rather than the other way around.

Some of the effects shots are fantastic. The 11-foot Enterprise model looks gorgeous, and even when Smith had to fall back on digital effects to speed up the production, many of the CG elements are quite convincing. In other spots, the film betrays its made-on-a-shoestring budget, with most of the matte effects feeling quite rough. There are a number of awkward edits, and at times characters and ships show up in places with little explanation, and April seems to make the same realization several times during a short stretch of story. The sound mix is annoyingly distracting, with the music and sound effects at times so overwhelming that you can’t hear the dialogue at all.

But every fan film is a learning experience, and this one was made with a lot of love and a metric ton of ambition. I wish the Sa’ryn had more of a motivation than their “all will die” motto indicates. At its best, Star Trek shines by having alien races embody some aspect of human culture that Starfleet’s encounters with them can explore. The script includes a number of action set pieces, but resolving them doesn’t necessitate any growth on the protagonist’s part, making them feel episodic rather than integral.

Still, Star Trek: First Frontier captures a lot of the love of exploration and discovery that TOS built into the DNA of the Star Trek Universe from the very beginning. When Captain April invokes a blessing over the Enterprise in the film’s closing minutes and the ship heads out into the great unknown, any Star Trek fan will feel a sense of satisfaction and anticipation for what lies ahead. “The Good Lord has seen fit to provide us with plenty of stars to sail by. May he also see fit to provide a strong wind in our sails and safe passage on our journeys.”

Make it so.

Behind the scenes on First Frontier

Ever since seeing the Star Trek: The Animated Series episode “The Counter-Clock Incident,” First Frontier producer Kenneth Smith has been fascinated with the character of Captain Robert April. Before Kirk, before Pike, April was the one who took the original USS Enterprise out of drydock for the very first time. What struck Smith so deeply about the character was his sense of deep satisfaction with his life. “When [he was] given the opportunity to relive that life, he turned it down. That always fascinated me,” Smith said. “I knew he must have had some amazing stories to tell to be that satisfied with his life with Sarah. He would be the first married Captain.”

His interest in the character led Smith to ultimately create this 80-minute fan film, detailing his version of April’s first voyage aboard the Enterprise. When his attempt at crowdfunding the movie failed, Smith decided to pay for the production himself, pursuing a seven-year journey step by step. Along the way, Smith collected some impressive talent for the production, including a moving opening narration by Nichelle Nichols.

And his passion for The Original Series led Smith to attempt what no other fan production has done: construct a full-size, physical 11-foot model of the original Enterprise herself and shoot the visuals with old-school model photography techniques.

I guess there are no black or brown people in April’s world. Star Trek is a bout diversity, I guess they forgot that!

No need to bring up race but talk all you want.

Black lives matter

Haha I noticed that too but they do have a token Asian even though they make up nearly 40 percent of the earth’s population. Actually my comment is half tongue in cheek, because this is a fan film and I assume the makers are using their enthusiastic friends and family for the cast. Good work to actually get this off the ground and sincere congrats on the overall look and feel. I will have to check it out when I get a change. I enjoyed many of the other fan films based on TOS and I expect to do the same with this one.

The article notes they cast actual actors, not just their friends and family. Either way, could have brought in some non-white members of the fandom.

How do we know they didn’t try?

They didn’t

You didn’t even watch it. Some important characters are not white at all.

I would love to see a fan film where there’s only one token white guy. That’s way closer to what the real future will look like.

They’re on their own ship. Stupid comments beget stupid comments

Yeah, it’s a super-white cast, which is quite sad.

Is that really what you took away from this? No black or brown people? It must be exhausting going through life obsessed with the colour of someone’s skin or what’s between their legs. I pity you.

Now THAT was a stupid reply.

Came here to say this. Representation is important especially in Star Trek projects.

You must really hate when people talk about racism.

The first voice heard is that of a proud woman of color.

Sometimes you make a fan film with a group of friends, maybe just maybe you don’t have friends of every ethnicity (Hey maybe we should have a “Friends diversity act” and have quotas to full fill). My opinion is: If you need to bring up colour, … you are automatically racist or full of prejudice. Colour shouldn’t matter, no matter on which side of the colour spectrum you are. Also, SJW are known to draw the victim card when they run out of arguments.

But it’s Star Trek. Diversity is explicitly a mandate in casting. It’s a fan production, the alien is a non-white actor, there’s an African American playing a minor role as a crewman and Nichelle Nichols graces the opening in VO, but I feel zero shame for noticing halfway through that the rest of the cast is white. This reverse racism psychology some people try to pull to attack inclusion efforts is not productive.

For a production where they actually were able to cast many roles with professional actors, that has to be seen as an unfortunate misstep IMO. It’s not the end of the world, and not something we need to dwell on out of all the wonderful things they managed to do so passionately, but it’s a valid thing to note.

I agree. It seems like a very unfortunate example of unconscious bias based in who the creators know, their social circle.

I have to say that one of the first thoughts I had was “Where in the United States was this made?”

That cast doesn’t look like any crowd I see in urban Ontario where I live or where I grew up on the west coast – and I’m leaving aside the city of Toronto which is more than half BIPOC.

I expect someone from London, or Birmingham or Manchester would say the same.

So, it not just that it’s not reflecting Star Trek’s representation and values going back to TOS, it just doesn’t look like reality to me.

Star Trek is not solely about diversity. It’s about the human adventure. Don’t lose sight of the message just because there weren’t enough colored people to alleviate to satisfying your wokeness.

Yup, yikes.

I don’t think that wokeness has anything to do with my sense that this doesn’t even look like my suburban Canadian high school or university classes in the 70s and 80s, let alone the demographic of our kids’ schools today.

WOW. You must be a boomer.

“ Colour shouldn’t matter, no matter on which side of the colour spectrum you are.”

If you’re white, you are absolutely right. Your color does not matter as it is reflected everyday in nearly everything you see.

If you are not white, then color does matter because you seldom see persons of your color, and when you do many times these images are negative.

“Color not mattering” is a very convenient world view for those who are not people of color. For the rest of us color matters ALL THE TIME because it is the first thing people note about us.

Wrong person to reply to, but I agree!

LOL it never ceases to astound me that somebody can be the type of person to unironically use the term “SJW” and be a Trekkie.

Agreed. And for some reason the “Wrath of Khan” soundtrack which takes you out of the world on the first note.

Lt Tai is of latin decent and in a same sex relationship, there is the asian guy, and that one female is clearly Andorian. Get your shit straight before you start bitchin’

I’d like to take the Andorian and the counselor to Risa.

World War 3 (2026 – 2053)

https://www.reddit.com/r/DaystromInstitute/comments/9uq4ej/world_war_3_was_a_nuclear_exchange_mainly/

Asians and Black Africans were the highest percentage of races killed in Star Trek’s War World Three… This would explain the limited number of those races throughout the Star Trek universe.

Again, it’s a fan production, so they aren’t bound by canon to inform any decisions they make, but that’s not only not canon, but also suuuuch a stretch, especially in 2020.

We don’t need an in-universe explanation to justify why the TOS guest roster is almost entirely Caucasian. We know the unfortunate real world reasons but at least TOS had a groundbreaking regular cast, despite never giving Uhura and Sulu enough to do.

OH PLEASE. No one is buying that crap.

Perhaps similarly to the Klingons their appearance has somehow changed in this century, or they have self segregated to a distant corner of the Galaxy.

They always do. I never watch these crappy fan films, they always try to live in the past. Just looks horrible.

Would you have said the opposite if had been an all non-white cast?

This deserves to be canon.

I like what’s in here. Fan films are not like the real thing but this one shines on its own.

No. No fan films “deserve” to be canon. That’s not how this works.

I thought these things weren’t allowed beyond a certain length anymore.

It said it was made before CBS changed the guidelines.

It does say that, doesn’t it? Right there in the first paragraph. Not sure how I missed that!

Being filmed prior to the guidelines, doesn’t supersede it having to follow the current guidelines. I suspect this will start being pulled down pretty soon. How hard would it have been to break it up into 4 20 min episodes instead of skirting the guidelines Cbs/ paramount have instituted.

Actually I believe it does.

If ViacomCBS had any issues, they would have pulled it by now – it’s been 6-7 weeks. The “guidelines” are just that “guidelines” and every film is a case-by-case basis if it crosses any. This film was self funded, shot 5 years ago before the deadline, runs 90 or so minutes, and has several professional actors – there’s 4 points – but ViacomCBS has done nothing. Trust me, ViacomCBS knows about this film, and has for some time.

But then there are several active fan film series domestic and international that breaks the “series” rule in the guidelines and ViacomCBS has done nothing about them either. Again, “Case-by-Case”.

Remember, the guidelines were put in place by a CBS and Paramount THAT NO LONGER EXISTS – it’s now ViacomCBS with most of the people who were there when the guidelines were in place now gone.

Perhaps it’s time for the current ViacomCBS to clarify the status of the guidelines.

The guidelines would only allow two 15 minute episodes if I recall. Luckily, this was filmed before and they could release it as intended.

It was shot before the guidelines. If ViacomCBS wanted to do something about it, they would have by now.

Phase 2’s last episode was also filmed prior to the restrictions and that has yet to see the light of day. How are these people getting away with this?

Phase 2’s last ep still had work to be done on it that couldn’t be done after the hammer dropped. Even says so on their website

Actually, it was the last 3 in various states of completion.

P2 is run by a bunch of cowards who kowtowed to CBS in order to license their sets as a for profit museum attraction.

That was a childish, uninformed and stupid response.

Childishly expressed, perhaps, but their “museum” is a re-creation and NOT a curated institute acquiring 1960s era artifacts and restoring them.

Their license is pretty much the same commercial type Universal Studios got to sell tickets to watch select fans make and be in a Trek “episode”.

And now they are adding the TNG Bridge to the “museum”…

Not sure what the point of building a physical miniature is when you light and comp it in such a way that it LOOKS like it is whole-cloth CG. And that’s coming from a huge fan of miniatures. Really wish they had the TOS strong keylight look in the exteriors. I just spent a couple minutes skimming through, haven’t actually watched all of any single fan film in my life. The guy playing April seems to have some gravitas, that’s something anyway.

I suspect the poor lighting was done precisely for the look you fingered, as they likely anticipated eventually resorting to CGI which the article mentions?

Wow, pretty cool that some fans take their enthusiasm to an extreme and we get to watch the fruits of their hard work. I really liked many of the other TOS fan films on YT. The look of this fan film is great and I look forward to checking this one out sometime when I get the chance.

The one pet peeve I have with the fan films (and I know many will say it is ridiculous haha – guilty as charged) is that according to a network memo from the 1960s both TOS producers Gene and Bob Justman made it quite clear that the delta insignia was to be worn by all starfleet personnel regardless of the ship they served on. I know this was never corrected on the TOS shows and each ship and starbase had a unique insignia, but I am happy that the prequels like Discovery are adhering to that intent and going forward it would be nice to see the fan film prequels do the same.

A for effort, the review sums up my impressions from skimming it as well. Just a shame they couldn’t enlist an audio engineer to donate his time – sound mix is the biggest issue.

Yeah. The score is way too loud – and, maybe it’s just because I listened to the Horner scores so many times as a kid, but the music is distracting and doesn’t really fit here.

I know it’s a fan film with a limited budget, but everything else is so well-done that the sound/music really stand out.

Back when i was 12 or 13, i read Diane Carey’s classic ‘Final Frontier’. It remains perhaps my very favorite Star Trek novel, and defined my perception of April.

‘First Frontier’ offers a completely different take — but as regards the Enterprise family, it’s fully as convincing. I watched it once, and then again, about a month ago… It is actually a very satisfying view; not easy when all we’ve got is a TAS episode with the Aprils and few other canon references.

This felt like a feature-length pilot, and follows in the footsteps: the fresh-out-of-spacedock ship (‘Broken Bow’); the sensitive and mysterious mission as impetus (‘Caretaker’); the troubled, reluctant hero that has no desire for the job (‘Emissary’). With the Nichols voiceover, there’s even a sort of cameo from some preceding luminary.

But in many ways, it has the most to do with TMP and ST09. Both function primarily to introduce us to the ship and to get the crew together on the bridge at the end. In that regard, the central conflict — the story that gets the Enterprise family together — is really secondary.

And that’s fortunate, as the central conflict story is pretty nowhere. But, well, that too follows in the footsteps of TMP and ST09.

OK, the balancing of the sounds and music and dialogue are a mess. Ditto for some of the editing, visual effects, and so forth. It’s annoying, and the sound issues are a relatively simple fix.

When i realized that they were using just the Horner Trek scores, i worried that it would be too conspicuously ‘Horner-scored films’ derived. But that quit bothering me early, and overall they did a nice job. (On these fan-film productions, i always wish for fresh music — but low budgets force hard choices. They did a nice job with Horner here.)

But Star Trek is ultimately about people; and it does it best, accordingly, when it has a big heart. And ‘First Frontier’ has plenty of heart. The writing job on the characters was quite good.

And, in common with the feature-length pilots earlier, i found myself eager to see more of this crew…

… and, yes, that fabulous 11-foot Enterprise model!

Obviously we won’t get that (thanks very much, CBS), but it’s a satisfying trip.

Quick addendum RE feature-length pilots… April leaning forward and ‘Let’s see what’s out there,’ recalls (or anticipates) Picard at close of ‘Encounter at Farpoint’.

Oh just read your post, agreed on Final Frontier. That story flowed so well, it will always to be me the first mission of the Enterprise, granted as the unnamed Empress at the time. Even the discussion between George Kirk and April on naming the ship rang true. That story has such good flow…. wish someone would make it into a film!!

This film does have a few rough spots. But the script is good, the performances by the lead actors are top notch, and the film has heart. It’s clearly a labor of love and I very much enjoyed watching it.

I am going to watch and I am sure I am going to love it, but I got to say, why wouldn’t you make a fan film of Diane Carey’s Final Frontier?!?! That was easily among the best Trek stories ever that captures all the good in Trek in one amazing adventure. “Final Frontier is the story of a secret mission gone horribly wrong–and a moment in time when the galaxy stood poised on the brink of one final, destructive war. And it is the story of a legendary ship–and a man we know as the father of Star Fleet’s greatest captain.” Had Robert April as the pacifist explorer that knew he needed Kirk’s Dad aboard (security officer/military) in a universe before both could co-exist in a JTK type. And it had great situational comedy and amazing starship combat.

“I am going to watch and I am sure I am going to love it, but I got to say, why wouldn’t you make a fan film of Diane Carey’s Final Frontier?!?!”

Well that’s pretty simple, for copyright reasons. Making a fan film is one thing, using an official story can probably get you into real trouble with the company and probably cut you off from making future films.

You’d think you’d be able to get a free sign off given it would sell more novels I bet. My preference though – CBS uses that awesome 1701 set and does it officially.

Well you can say that about every Star Trek novel. ;)

And it doesn’t stop CBS or Paramount from making an OFFICIAL movies/shows dealing with novels, but never done it. Many fans thought Picard might be about the Destiny novels that fans seem to love but sadly didn’t happen. Those I heard a lot about as well.

incredible. thats passion and love for trek. love it.

Great review – absolutely hit the nail on the head from what I had noted while watching it. It’s good to enjoy a TrekMovie article thoroughly again.

The sound mix was very off at times, especially where music was concerned. Some of the effects appeared as if they still needed work here and there. My biggest gripe were the design of the aliens. They looked as if they should have been in season 2 of Lost in Space…

This is no way meant to detract from the overall of the film. The story and acting were stellar.

With what they had, the end result is a testament to what can be done with so few resources.

The Enterprise model looks gorgeous. I would love to see them take on a build of the TOS production version. The bridge was likewise amazing.

Does anyone know if they have plans for anything else Trek related?

Also, do they have anything other than Facebook page?

This was good, some scenes were a little fake, but still good only comments are the Men are too bulky for Starship personal & Captains.

Other than effects, seem correct,as too the people of color things, there was a few Granted ( Asian, Hispanic, black, and of course aliens (blue, black, yellowish, but no Vulcans, Klingons, Romulans.

Still guest, stars was very nice to see and hear(Beginning dialogue).

A well made efforts, for a independent Film feature, fascinating!!

This is what frustrates me with Star Trek cannon. I have read books on the series, listened to audio books and i have seen all the episodes and movies for the entire franchise. The story about first contact has been depicted and described several different ways… Johnathan Archer was depicted as the original captain in stories that claim that the first enterprise was a top secret project. This was enforced by the Enterprise series… I am a Trekkie at heart but I wish there was more control over the cannon like there is in Star wars.

Anything that is not in television and movies is generally considered “not canon”. The exception is some of the comics were considered Kelvinverse canon, but even that may not be the case if filmmakers or show runners decide to do different things in the shows or movies.

The reason for this is that there is `’fandom.” Star Trek was saved not necessarily by it’s creator – but by legions of fans who wrote their own stories and self-published them. That spirit of possibilities is what has always permitted different takes in the “official” published Star Trek literature. Now, 50 years later, it’s also true in fan made films and even in official “pocket universes” which give alternative takes on familiar stories.

Nx-01 was the first enterprise or did they forget there was already a series about that with Capt. Archer, which I might add, was quite fabulous!

While you are correct….Archer was the 1st captain of “an Enterprise” which was an NX class starship… in a non-federation state. Capt April was the 1st captain of the Constitution Class NCC class starship under the Federation…

A kind review for a well-intentioned attempt at Star Trek.

Got to respect their passion. Just can’t sit through these fan films though. But thats OK I guess lol

Star Trek Continues is worth a watch as a whole.

I would love to see another production with this cast and crew if they learn lessons from this one:

  • Fix the sound mix, we’re all agreed there.
  • A lot of it seemed like it needed more light on-set. It felt dark and cold – bring back some 10000w lamps with colored gels. As someone else mentioned, the high-key space lighting from TOS would have looked better than the deep shadows during the space sequences.
  • The lead actors were great, but I think, like a lot of fan films, there’s a need to put more oomph and volume behind the lines. It’s a fine line between cinematic style and hammy stage acting, but it felt like there was a lot of low-key whispering. I rather wish Robert Pralgo had been encouraged to do ‘faster and more intensity,’ Lucas-style :) Even RSC-trained Patrick Stewart leans into his lines with more gusto. I think this is what sort of also led to the (typical for fan films, but manageable) difference between the pro and amateur actors’ delivery.
  • Pacing was a problem. It’s the curse of the first-time director that they fall in love with every shot and want to keep every scene, but it could have had snappier energy and better edits. It could have easily been trimmed to 60 minutes or even a tight 45-minute pilot episode.
  • Edits were a problem. A lot of cuts that left the viewer wondering what they were looking at or which ship they were on, particularly in the final battle sequence. Different lighting, reverse camera angles, or using quick glimpses of the ship exterior to hint to the viewers that we’re about to move locations would have helped. (Also, showcases why the Reliant had to look different to the Enterprise in TWOK, because two Constitution-class ships onscreen gets confusing quickly.)
  • Cinematography was static and kind of boring. Needed more dynamic moves, dolly zooms, whip pans, Steadicam shots to tell the story.
  • Barry Corbin in 20th-century clothes and in a 20th-century house felt odd (something that also didn’t work in Star Trek: Horizon ‘s Earth sequences), like someone had wandered onto the set from outside. Even small towns evolve in 300 years!
  • Was a lesson learned? Where was the nice summation, the buttoner line that would have put things into perspective at the end? All good classic Trek needs an Aesop… :)

Boy you guys were right about the sound mixing, holy moly. Other than that, interesting story and overall looks pretty solid, except for those birds flying over San Fran 😂

It is a good film. Watched half and really enjoying it.

I Love this fan Star Trek episode! My only criticism was that Captain April needed to shave. But his acting was superb! (I did 22 years in the US Navy so seeing officers unshaven is taboo in my world!) Bravo Zulu.

I agree. April should have been clean shaven. I understand that the producers/creators were going for the “seasoned” , “battle weary” look. But an officer should always be clean shaven.

The production was really great for a fan film. Yes, things could have been better regarding special effects and such, but on their budget? Impressive.

The special effects explosions and such were very crude, like something I used to do in the mid-90’s on my own video editing. Outside of that, they made a darn good try, but the story was loose and the interpersonal relationship drama fell flat. I don’t blame the actors. I blame the writing. If the personal drama doesn’t aid the story, then don’t have it.

I think the whole essence of Star Trek was completely missed in this fan film.

With very, very poor special effects and some awful editing and camera work it is nothing short of cringe worthy. I had to stop watching it 3 times it was so bad and then continue at a later time or date to complete the agony.

The writers have attempted to create an all action, unknown aliens are evil, plot and yes most of the cast was white. Although there was one Asian, Hispanic and African American officers in the film this didn’t do enough to show how diverse the Star Trek universe is.

Even the title sequence was a bit of a nightmare, with the stuttering U.S.S Enterprise attempting to flash across the screen, reminiscent of The Original Series opening credits.

I guess this fan film is ideal for Halloween!

Is it me, r is the deflector dish too big?

Thoroughly enjoyed this!!I I really liked the plot and especially the actors..they did an outstanding job. I always wonder what it’s like, from the perspective of a young actor who didn’t grow up with TOS, to wear makeup and costumes and perform on sets that are all replicas of a 50 year old sci show. It’s got to be a hoot!

The not so good” Yeah, the STII music was distracting for me as well. Wish they would’ve gone with TOS and it yes, was a bit loud in parts. Even with the imperfections though, you can tell it was from made from the heart and that one heck of a lot of work went in to it.

Cheers mates! Thanks for entertaining me for a bit!

I really hope the production team would consider trying to find someone to properly score this fan film. It deserves as much. It looks really good. The current soundtrack though, I just can’t sit through the movie with the wrath of Khan soundtrack. :( It’s so overused. Surely there were other options.

Sorry, but even the opening credit sequence is horrible. All the ships look really bad and don’t know how to fly.

Well, it’s a fan film…..

Really impressive. Good “final” contribution to the fanon of TOS-inspired fan films that bridged the era between ENT and DSC. The use of the TWOK score is a tad off, they should have used 50s and 60s style scifi scores instead. The movie looks like a true TOS prequel with throwbacks to 50s invasion flicks. The score is off. But nonetheless really awesome…

OMG This is so highly unwatchable bad. It actually makes STD look good…which is not meant as a complement.

Screen Rant

"event horizon meets star trek": tng's most disturbing episode to finally return in new body horror nightmare (exclusive).

The Star Trek universe is about to get a dose of body horror in a forthcoming arc described best as Star Trek meets Event Horizon!

  • The "Conspiracy" episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation was a disturbing one and a missed opportunity for a follow-up story.
  • A forthcoming arc in Star Trek: Defiant will bring back the aliens from "Conspiracy," continuing IDW's streak of taking obscure story elements and spinning gold out of them.
  • The upcoming arc in Star Trek: Defiant will infuse body horror into the mythos, satisfying fans' desire for a dark Star Trek story.

Star Trek: The Next Generation’s most disturbing episode is set to return in a new body horror nightmare. Star Trek’s future is bright and optimistic, but more than a few episodes have depicted the horrors that come with life in space. “Conspiracy,” airing during The Next Generation’s first season, was one such episode, and now it is getting a sequel in forthcoming issues of Star Trek: Defiant.

In the inaugural installment of ScreenRant’ s Captain’s Log , Star Trek Senior Editor Heather Antos reflected on where the line was headed next. Antos praised Paramount for allowing them to “boldly go with the stories [they’re] telling.” When asked about a body horror tease for upcoming issues of Star Trek: Defiant , Antos had this to say:

Oh, you're not ready. It is. The next arc of Defiant is very much inspired by the episode "Conspiracy," which I think we're all... it's one of those episodes that left me wanting more. I feel like there were a lot of loops that weren't closed there, and we're hoping to close some of those gaps with this story. Y'all are in for a wild ride the next five months. Ángel Unzueta is coming back to draw this arc, and his uncanny ability to detail realism and graphic, graphic detail with this body horror. It's definitely made us have to make some creative choices on how we show certain elements. This arc is definitely not for the faint of heart, but it does fulfill one of my goals. When I got to take over Star Trek, one of my goals was, 'I want to do a Star Trek story that is Event Horizon meets Star Trek,' and I really feel like this arc satisfies that dream of mine

"Conspiracy" Should Have Been the Star of Something Huge in the Star Trek Franchise

The "conspiracy" aliens were one of star trek's scariest.

“Conspiracy,” a dark and ominous story about a group of parasitic life forms infiltrating Starfleet, remains one of Star Trek: The Next Generation’s , and the franchise as a whole, most disturbing episodes. The episode was gory, culminating with one of the franchise’s most brutal kills. The episode ends with the life forms sending a signal to an unexplored part of the galaxy, and it was heavily implied this signal was a beacon of some sort, a vanguard for an invasion. However, this story was dropped immediately after the episode aired, and it never received a proper follow-up in canonical material.

Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry despised the episode "Conspiracy," feeling it portrayed Starfleet in too dark a light.

The Star Trek franchise is full of missed opportunities and intriguing plot points that were never followed up on-screen. The creators behind IDW’s new line of Trek comics have dived deep into the franchise, taking obscure story elements and spinning gold from them. For example, the T’Kon Empire, another throwaway reference from Next Generation’s first season, was utilized in the book’s first arc, showing fans just how powerful the T'kon were . The creators behind these books are not simply doing fan service, but instead refashioning the lore to create new and compelling stories that move the franchise forward.

Star Trek And Body Horror Go Hand in Hand

Aliens like the borg are proof of this.

The aliens from “Conspiracy” are one of Star Trek’s biggest dangling plot lines, and the Defiant creative team of Christopher Cantwell and Angel Unzueta are revisiting the story and infusing it with body horror. Antos described the arc as “Star Trek meets Event Horizon.” The 1997 movie deftly mixed horror and science fiction, showcasing plenty of body horror. Likewise, “Conspiracy” featured some truly stomach-turning moments, namely the killing of the parasite queen. As seen in Star Trek: The Next Generation’s most disturbing episode, body horror has a place in the franchise, and now this episode is getting a nightmarish sequel.

Kevin Costner Unveils ‘Horizon’ Trailer and Explains Why Making the Western Epic Was His ‘Biggest Struggle’ Yet

Kevin Costner Horizon: An American Saga

When Kevin Costner revealed the trailer for “ Horizon: An American Saga ,” the first of his planned four-part epic about the American West, the two-time Academy Award winner looked positively giddy — at least over Zoom.

“Trailers have always been kind of a favorite part for me, even as a boy going to the movies,” Costner said, grinning as he unveiled the first footage in a virtual conversation with journalists. “You’re obviously there to see the movie you want, but isn’t it kind of cool when you see what’s coming? … And with that in mind, I did my very best to expose what’s going to be a four-part saga.”

“Can they, in a sense, feel themselves in this movie? Because that’s what I want people to feel in the dark, that [it] suddenly just absorbs them,” Costner teased. “We all know what happens when the lights go out — either something good, something average or something great. What I hope is that this is something that stays with them forever.”

The three minute trailer introduces “Horizon’s” ensemble cast — led by Costner’s Hayes Elllison, who rides into the frame with the stunning landscapes of Utah on full display — and tees up the action as the film explores the triumphs and tragedies brought on by the ideology of Manifest Destiny. The clip shares a first look at his co-stars Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Tantanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Ella Hunt and Jamie Campbell Bower.

Much of the footage simply teases, rather than directly explains the film’s plot, offering glimpses of the Native American populations that will be featured in the film and possibly a romantic storyline between Costner’s Ellison and Lee’s character.

“Use that much this year?” Bower’s character asks Costner near the end of the clip, as he uses his shotgun to reveal Costner’s holstered pistol.

“Haven’t had much need of it yet,” he replies, as the clip cuts to a scene in which Costner displays his quick draw skills.

“Looks like we’ve got ourselves a bad man right here,” Bower declares, chuckling as Costner walks away.

The official description explains that the film “explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won — and lost — through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.”

In addition to starring in the film, Costner directed from a script he co-wrote with Jon Baird. “Horizon: An American Saga” is Costner’s fourth directorial effort following 2003’s “Open Range,” 1997’s “The Post Man” and 1990’s Oscar best picture-winning “Dances With Wolves.”

“This is by far the biggest struggle,” Costner declared, when asked if ‘Horizon’ or ‘Dances with Wolves’ was more difficult to make. “I’m shocked at what we were able to get. I shot ‘Dances’ for 106 days, I shot the movie you’re just seeing right now in 52. … I did learn a lot and I was able to use every trick in the book to try to bring this movie to ground and to bring it to an audience. And there’s four of them!”

In the conversation, moderated by Deadline’s Mike Fleming, Costner also detailed the origins of the project and explained why he held onto this idea for more than 30 years.

“It’s hard to fall out of love. I don’t do that,” Costner said. “Things that have a classic feel they don’t fall out of touch either. I think they exist in any decade. That’s the opportunity we have in cinema is to make something that lasts past its opening weekend. I’ve never banked on opening weekends; I banked on people wanting to revisit something.”

With “Horizon” specifically, Costner wasn’t deterred when no one wanted to finance the movie; in fact, that gave him the “bright idea to make four,” he quipped, adding that, “There’s a lot of people out there that know I’m a little bit of a hard-head or something.”

In terms of the film’s tone, he wanted to step away from the well-worn Western tropes.

Because he was so passionate about this story, Costner said he eventually realized that he had to make it which mean looking to himself financially to do it.

“Not the smartest thing,” he admitted, alluding to the personal cost of risking his 10-acre Santa Barbara home to fund the movie series. “But I count on people. I count on the movie speaking louder than anything I can say. And so with that in mind, I just shoved West myself and I just left, and I went out to make this movie in Utah.

Costner then explained why he shot the film in the Beehive State. “When you go through Utah, it’s magic. And it wasn’t easy for us to do. There were certain things that weren’t set up that we see in other states. … But I kind of bypassed the smart business decision to go where my money could stretch farther.” Costner noted that the production spent over $100 million in Utah and employed more than 500 people over the course of the shoot. “We had an impact on the state, but the state had an impact on me.”

He also revealed that the movie was originally titled “Sidewinder,” but because he’d had a few movies that inspired copycats, like Robin Hood and Wyatt Earp, he wanted to throw the industry off his scent.

“I just thought, ‘I don’t want anybody stepping into whatever I’m trying to do,’ so I called it ‘Horizon’ and said it was written by my son just to disguise it when it went to the Writers Guild,” Costner said. “But the longer I started to think about it, the more I began to appreciate that dreams, going West, they’re always about ‘Out there.’ When you realize a country is bigger and farther than anyone ever dreamed, it is about the horizon.”

He explained: “Because everybody is looking for something — even today, in the relationships and what’s going on at work. They’re looking for room; they’re looking for fresh air. And our 200 year march across this country was no different.”

Costner also acknowledged the injustices that the film saga will explore, particularly as it explores the Civil War era, which he describes as “a mark on our country, however you choose to look at it — the loss of life, the reason it was fought, the things that we still haven’t solved, we’re still trying to come to terms with as a nation — but it closed the West in a blink of an eye.”

The war had kept the country’s on the east coast, but the minute it ended in 1865, everyone looked west again. “In 25 years, something that had been there for thousands of years, it was over. Our national appetite was to be satisfied at the at the disadvantage to those who had been there and flourished and were living in their own way,” Costner said, referring to the Indigenous populations who were crushed by the movement.

With so much experience in the western or cowboy genre in projects like “Dances With Wolves,” “Open Range,” and most recently as the star of “Yellowstone,” Costner cautioned that he’s not trying to reinvent the wheel with “Horizon.”

“You try not to separate yourself from the rest of the reindeer in terms of [saying] ‘I’m going to be different,’ because I’m not looking to set the record straight or make a history lesson,” he said of the film. “There’s just a way I look at movies: I’m gonna get to the action; I’m gonna get to my gunfight, but I’m gonna get there in maybe a different way. … The West is a real place with real issues.”

At the end of the day, Costner hopes to achieve a couple goals. “I want my little girl to see what her great, great, great-grandmother went through,” he said of his personal investment in the story. But on a broader scale, he hopes the ride is worth moviegoers’ money.

“The oldest profession is telling stories around a fire. We all want to hear a good one and we don’t want somebody to waste our time. And I take my time, I hope I don’t waste your time,” Costner said. “I made four of these. I’d like for us to all take those journeys and try to have a high understanding of this first one. The second one’s already shot. I’m out there, heading west again, pushing a rock uphill trying to make the third one. I know I’m a little bit kind of a joke, or it’s maybe humorous to even watch me, because it’s like, ‘Whoa, I wonder when he’s going to ever stop digging.’ I don’t know.”

At this point, the movie isn’t even his anymore. “Horizons” will now travel the world, as will the questions he’s been dreaming about for decades. Like, if he’d made that trek in the 1800s, would he have made it? He might not know the answer to that question, but he’s feeling pretty accomplished anyway.

“I’m terribly satisfied in my own life that God allowed me to get these first two done,” Costner said, quipping, “I mean, if I’m hit by lightning, who knows what happens? At least I went West.”
