Apply online for your visa

new zealand tourist visa

Whether you’re coming to New Zealand to visit, study, work or live, you’ll know there are a few things you need to get sorted.

The good news is that you can apply for your visa online, and it’s now easier than ever before. In fact, it’s faster and cheaper than a paper application, leaving you more time to plan the fun stuff.

No matter if you’re coming from Shanghai or Suva – you can apply for your visa online from anywhere, at any time. And if you’re already in New Zealand and want to stay longer, you can apply for that too.

To get started, visit the immigration website to find out if you need a visa, and the requirements you’ll need to meet.

To apply, you’ll need to upload your documents, a passport-style photo, and pay with a credit or debit card.

We can’t start processing your visa unless everything’s there, so double check you’ve included all the required documents before you press submit.

You can even start your application, save it, and finish it later.

Once you’ve submitted your application, we’ll let you know if you need to send us your passport, or if we can issue an e-visa. Simple!

So jump online, get started and we’ll see you soon.

Most work, student and visitor visas can be applied for online. Applying online is often faster and less expensive than sending in a paper application form. When you apply online we can also issue your visa electronically so you won't have to send us your passport.

If you apply online, you'll need to have a credit card ready, and any supporting evidence, like a copy of your passport, will need to be available in an electronic file.

To apply online, visit the Immigration New Zealand website.

New Zealand Visa for Tourists in 2024: A Comprehensive Guide

Updated: February 28, 2024

New Zealand Visa

New Zealand’s visa policy for tourists is incredibly simple as there are only two ways to enter.

Many travelers are visa-exempt in which case they need to get an NZeTA online. Everybody else needs to apply for a Visitor Visa.

This article summarizes all the important information about the New Zealand visa for tourists and the relevant details.

Table of Contents

Visa policy and visa types.

Australians are visa-exempt to travel, live, and work in New Zealand for an indefinite period under the Trans-Tasman Travel Agreement.

Citizens of 60 countries and territories are on New Zealand’s visa waiver list. However, all of them must apply for the NZeTA before traveling.

All other nationalities must obtain a Visitor Visa.

Everyone except for Australians and people from the Pacific Island countries must pay an International Visitor Levy fee included in the NZeTA or Visa cost.

Visa Requirements

New Zealand Visa Requirements by Nationality

Passport validity required

Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the intended departure date from New Zealand.

Entry requirements

The common entry requirements for all incoming tourists to New Zealand are:

  • Be of good health (don’t intend to seek medical treatment)
  • Be of good character (not have a criminal record and not having been deported from any country)
  • Have a return or onward ticket

Onward ticket

You must have proof of return or onward ticket when traveling to New Zealand. These tickets must be paid and confirmed. If the country after New Zealand requires an onward ticket, then you must have proof of an onward ticket from that country as well.

The New Zealand Electronic Travel Authorization (NZeTA) was introduced on 1 October 2019. Ever since the Visa Waiver and the NZeTA have become identical.

Most NZeTA applications are processed within 3 days. Outside of the high summer season, applications are processed almost immediately.

Validity and Allowed Stay

The NZeTA is valid for 2 years after it’s granted. It allows stays of up to 90 days except for UK nationals who can stay up to 6 months.

There is no limit to the times you can enter New Zealand. However, you cannot stay longer than 6 months in any rolling 12-month period (even for UK passports).

For more information, read the complete guide to New Zealand NZeTA for details on eligibility, required documents, the NZeTA mobile app and the application process.

It is extendable by up to 3 months to a total of 12 months.

Multiple-entry

The multiple-entry visa ’s validity is:

  • Not longer than the passport’s validity
  • 5 years for nationals of China

The price of the Visitor Visa depends on your nationality. It is between 171 and 246 NZD. The International Visitor Levy is included in this price except for exempt Pacific Island nations (see below).

For more information, read the complete guide on New Zealand Visitor Visa for eligibility, requirements, documentation and application process.

Benefits of a New Zealand visa

New Zealand visa also works as a substitute visa for traveling to other countries. As of 2024, you can travel to 12 countries with a New Zealand visa. Read this article on  VISA-FREE countries for New Zealand visa  to learn how to visit these 12 countries.

Transit Visa

Transit without leaving the airport is only available at Auckland International for up to 24 hours. You would either need an NZeTA or a Transit visa.

Transits longer than 24 hours are not allowed at Auckland airport. If your transit is longer than 24 hours, you will clear immigration. You would need a Visitor Visa or NZeTA( if from a visa-waiver country) in that case.

NOTE Airports in New Zealand, except Auckland International Airport, do not have transit zones. That means, transiting at airports in New Zealand other than Auckland International Airport requires clearing immigration. You would need a Visitor Visa or NZeTA (if from a visa-waiver country).

Transit with NZeTA

The following nationalities require an NZeTA to transit at Auckland International Airport.

  • Must remain in the transit zone unless you’re from a visa-waiver country
  • Must remain in the transit zone
  • Can also enter NZ

Transit visa waiver countries

  • Marshall Islands
  • Papua New Guinea
  • Philippines
  • Solomon Islands

A transit visa does not allow entry to the country, it’s strictly meant for transiting at Auckland International Airport. The transit period must be less than 24 hours.

Application and cost

Nationalities that require a transit visa can apply online on the New Zealand Immigration portal . A transit visa costs 180 NZD.

Below is the summary of transit visa requirements for New Zealand.

For more information, read the complete guide on New Zealand Transit Visa for requirements, application process and transit procedure at the airport.

International Visitor Levy

Visitors to New Zealand must pay a fee for conservation and the maintenance of tourism infrastructure. This fee is called the International Visitor Levy (IVL). It is 35 NZD per person.

The IVL is included in the price of the Visitor Visa or added to the cost of the NZeTA when applying. It is payable once per visa/NZeTA, NOT per entry!

Visitors from these countries and territories are exempt from paying the IVL:

  • American Samoa
  • Cook Islands
  • Pitcairn Islands

New Zealand Traveler Declaration (Arrival Card)

All travelers must complete a traveler declaration before reaching passport control. You can complete it either online at the New Zealand Traveler Declaration website or on paper at the airport.

Pay close attention to the requirements to declare certain items. New Zealand has very strict biosecurity protocols and failure to declare even otherwise safe items may lead to instant fines or more severe penalties.

New Zealand

Entry requirements.

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in New Zealand set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the New Zealand High Commission in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering New Zealand.

Passport validity requirements

To enter New Zealand, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. If you’re travelling through another country on your way to or from New Zealand, check the entry requirements for that country. Many countries will only allow entry if you have at least 6 months validity remaining on your passport. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

You do not need a visa to enter New Zealand if you are a visitor staying less than 6 months. You do need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority ( NZeTA ).

At New Zealand border control, you will also need to show that you meet the criteria for visa-free entry:

  • proof of a return or onward ticket
  • proof that you have enough money for your stay

Check the full criteria on New Zealand Immigration .

New Zealand has strict immigration rules, particularly on employment. Visitors cannot work in New Zealand.

New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority ( NZeTA )

If you are entering without a visa, you need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority ( NZeTA ) before you travel. You will also need to pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy when you apply.

Allow up to 72 hours for it to be processed. Your NZeTA is valid for up to 2 years.

Applying for a visa

Check the visa options and costs on New Zealand Immigration .

To extend your visa, first check your visa expiry date on the New Zealand Visa Verification Service . See further information from New Zealand Immigration on how to apply for a visa extension .

Travelling through New Zealand

You will need to get a NZeTA before you travel if you are travelling through New Zealand to another country.

In most cases, transit passengers must hold an NZeTA or transit NZeTA before travel.

Vaccination requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s New Zealand guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of New Zealand. It is illegal to import most food products. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Some products, including wood products, golf clubs, footwear, tents, fishing equipment and items made from animal skin, can carry harmful pests or diseases. Check what items you are permitted to bring into New Zealand . If in doubt, declare items to a Biosecurity New Zealand official or dispose of them in one of the marked bins available at the airport.

If you break any of these rules you could get a fine of up to 100,000 New Zealand dollars or a prison sentence.

Holders of WHVs may travel and work in New Zealand for up to 12 months and study or train for up to six months in total. You must activate your visa by arriving in New Zealand within the time you were given. This is usually one year from the date it is granted.

What you are not allowed: you cannot:

– Accept a permanent job or work for the same employer for more than three months.

– Bring children. If you have a partner who wants to come to New Zealand, they'll need to apply for their own visa.

– Delay or cancel a working holiday visa that has been granted; otherwise, it will lapse.

– Apply again for a working holiday visa if one was already granted to you, even if you did not use that visa.

Other than meeting the 18-30 age requirement, a first-time WHV applicant must have the following documents to meet each of the criteria when applying:

– Identity: current Philippine passport valid for at least 15 months after you first arrive.

– Health: chest X-ray and a medical examination from authorized providers/clinics.

– Character: NBI clearance and police clearance from countries where you have stayed, worked, or resided for at least a year.

To meet the conditions of this visa, New Zealand Immigration (NZI) considers the following: evidence provided to support the application, your personal circumstances, and history of visa application and/or previous stay in NZ.

You must have a ticket to leave New Zealand or enough money of NZ$4,200 minimum to buy one. Evidence of the NZ$4,200 would include bank statements, credit card statements, bank drafts and travelers' checks.

Education. Copy of a tertiary qualification, which must involve at least three years of full-time study.

English language. Evidence of ability to speak and understand English demonstrated either an acceptable English language test result (no more than two years old) or a tertiary qualification from an institution where all the tuition was in English.

Full medical insurance for the length of your stay, such as a copy of your insurance certificate and an approval letter from your insurance company.

Processing time. The INZ website shows that 80 percent of WVH visa online applications are processed within four weeks after payment of the $455 fee by credit or debit card Visa, MasterCard or UnionPay credit card.

Conditions of admission after visa approval. The applicant must come to New Zealand within 12 months of the date the visa is granted. After arrival, the WVHV holder can come and go from New Zealand as many times before the visa expires.

Entry permission. A visa is a document you present to an immigration/border officer at a port of entry to be granted entry. The WVH holder must complete a paper arrival card or a digital traveler declaration.

Next set of expenses

The first part is payment for the visa application and meeting the requirements for the visa. The next expense stage starts with where to stay while working or simply visiting — accommodation while looking for work or while on holiday.

You do not need to work if you have sufficient funds for the duration of your stay (six months or one year). However, you still need a place to stay.

If you intend to work, remember that you cannot work continuously for three months with one employer. If your intended place to stay is in the North (Auckland, Tauranga, Hamilton, Wellington) or South Island (Christchurch, Queenstown, Dunedin), you may work for different employers in one city in three months succession within the 12-month period.

Therefore, you should check out the accommodation in these places you intend to stay or work — motel self-contained unit, hotel room, family apartment or holiday home, holiday park campervan site, etc.

What you have paid so far: the $455 application fee, a round-trip ticket (for a flight more than 13 hours one way), which ranges from P47,177 to Auckland, the capital, and P62,280 to Queenstown, South Island, and for the English language test — P13,100 British Council. Then, the recurring costs of staying in a hostel, hotel or holiday park camper van.

Where the jobs are

You can work in any employment you like if you do not work for more than three months for any one employer; work for more than 12 months in total; get a permanent job; do illegal, unauthorized work; provide commercial sexual services; and run or invest in a business that offers commercial sexual services.

New Zealand has a list of occupations in short supply that the country needs — the short-term and long-term lists. However, that list is now under a new category, the Green List Occupations (GLO), which is tailored for skilled workers intending to pursue permanent residency.

Working visa holders are prohibited from this option.

Therefore, a WVH Holder must check on the part-time jobs in the city, area or island where he or she intends to visit and work — and must meet the requirements for the part-time job desired.

Unfortunately, international students — authorized to work 20 hours a week during school sessions and 40 hours off-school calendar — are the competitors for WVHs.

For both students and WVHs, some jobs that are easy to get in New Zealand (according to nzpocketguide.com) include those in food manufacturing, hospitality (bartender, food beverage server, cashier), construction work, picker or packer, brewery worker, and farming hand — work in a dairy farm of agricultural enterprise.

The trick is to know where competitors are fewer given the competitors (other Working Visa Holiday holders and international students).

Nighttime jobs, especially the midnight shift, are available since Kiwis and international students are up and about during the day study period.

Last month, the Workplace Relations and Safety Minister announced that the adult minimum wage will rise to $23.15 per hour from April 1, 2024. This is an increase of 45 cents per hour from the current hourly rate of $22.70.

Marketing your skills

If you were a New Zealand employer — in the hospitality, daily, farm sector or part of a community neighborhood group — would you hire someone you do not know or have no idea who this person applying for a job is?

It is important then that your part-time job hunting would focus on jobs that you have the skill set, experience or willingness to learn.

After all, if you have been working in the Philippines as a call center agent or in the hospitality industry (as a bartender, food and beverage server), it would be hard to get a farm, agriculture, or horticulture-related job.

Find tips from WHV holders in NZ here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gI75O9TmHbs&ab_channel=GlenAndMado .

Taxes, IRD number and bank accounts

If you receive income, you must pay taxes.

Before you can work, you must open a bank account and then apply for an IRD number and a bank account. If you do not have one when you start earning income, you'll pay a higher tax rate of 45 percent. IRD processing usually takes approximately two weeks.

If you intend to stay for more than a year or work, then pursue the visa options are care workforce to residence, skilled migrant category resident, straight to residence, transport work to residence, accredited employer work visa, global impact permanent, specific purpose or the Philippines special work visa.

This last one is reserved for RNs, farm managers or engineering professionals.

Set your alarm, and happy holidays.

Updated travel information for Mexican citizens coming to Canada

From: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada

News release

Canada and Mexico have maintained a deep, positive and constructive diplomatic partnership over the past 80 years. We have worked to ensure North America is the world’s most competitive economic region and maintain strong bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation. To support travel and people-to-people connections between Canada and Mexico, while also preserving the integrity of our immigration system, the Government of Canada is adjusting its travel requirements for Mexican citizens.

February 29, 2024, 8:30 a.m. – Ottawa – Canada and Mexico have maintained a deep, positive and constructive diplomatic partnership over the past 80 years.

As of February 29, 2024, at 11:30 p.m. Eastern time, Mexican citizens who hold a valid US non-immigrant visa or have held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years and are travelling by air on a Mexican passport will be able to apply for an electronic travel authorization (eTA). With the high number of Mexican citizens currently holding US visas, the majority will continue to enjoy visa-free travel to Canada. Those who do not meet these conditions will need to apply for a Canadian visitor visa. This responds to an increase in asylum claims made by Mexican citizens that are refused, withdrawn or abandoned. It is an important step to preserve mobility for hundreds of thousands of Mexican citizens, while also ensuring the sound management of our immigration and asylum systems.

The application process for Mexican citizens seeking a work or study permit will not change. Mexican citizens who want to work in Canada will continue to have access to a wide number of existing labour pathways, including the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and the International Mobility Program.

Canada supports ongoing travel, tourism and business with Mexico. We will continue to work with the Government of Mexico to strengthen our regular pathways to immigration, and with our provincial and territorial counterparts to support a system of managed migration as well as to support those in need of protection. Canada is expanding its network of visa application centres in Mexico to better serve these clients. Today’s action will relieve pressure on Canada’s borders, immigration system, housing and social services, while preserving mobility for Mexican citizens who want to come to Canada.

The Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) is a vital example of the mutually beneficial migration that we seek to promote regionally and globally. Canada is ready to work with Mexico to build on this program, through the modernization of a new SAWP bilateral agreement, to offer Mexican workers new opportunities, through the incorporation of year-round primary agriculture and seasonal fish, seafood and primary food processing into the program. This will benefit workers and businesses on both sides of the Canada–Mexico relationship.

Canada is continuously monitoring the impacts of its visa policies for both visa-exempt and visa-required countries, as well as asylum claim trends. These challenges are not limited to one country. Any adjustment to Canada’s travel requirements are made to preserve the integrity and sustainability of our asylum and immigration systems.

More information about these changes, including for people in transit or with upcoming flights, is available on IRCC’s website .

“Mexico is an important partner to Canada. We will continue to welcome Mexican temporary workers, students, visitors and immigrants who bring diverse skills and important contributions to our economy and communities. We strive for balance between the movement of people between our two great countries, and the need to relieve pressure on our immigration system so we can provide protection to those who need it the most.” – The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

Quick facts

Asylum claims made by Mexican citizens reached a record high in 2023 at a time when Canada’s asylum system, housing and social services were already under significant pressure. The majority of these claims (approximately 60%) were either rejected by the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, or withdrawn or abandoned by the applicant.

In 2023 alone, asylum claims from Mexican citizens accounted for 17% of all claims made that year from all nationalities around the world. The country’s asylum claim rate has risen significantly since the visa was first lifted in 2016 (from 260 claims in 2016 to 23,995 claims in 2023).

All eTAs issued to Mexican passports before 11:30 p.m. Eastern time on February 29, 2024, will no longer be valid—except for eTAs linked to Mexican passports with a valid Canadian work or study permit. Mexican citizens travelling to Canada without a valid work or study permit will need to apply for a visitor visa or reapply for a new eTA —if they are eligible.

Mexican citizens holding a valid work or study permit can still travel by air to Canada with their existing eTA as long as it remains valid, and they can continue to study or work in Canada based on the validity and conditions of their permit. Mexican visitors who are already in Canada on an eTA can stay for as long as they are authorized (up to six months from the date they arrive in Canada). However, if they plan to leave Canada and wish to return, they must have the proper travel documents (visa or new eTA).

Most approved visa applicants receive multiple-entry visas, which allow them to visit Canada as many times as they want, for up to 10 years, or until their passport expires.

The eTA is a digital travel document that most visa-exempt travellers need in order to travel to or transit through Canada by air. IRCC first began expanding its eTA program to eligible citizens from visa-required countries in 2017. Mexico will now be among 15 countries whose citizens can to fly to Canada on an eTA, instead of a visa, if they meet certain requirements .
