That Old Rugged Cross Dresser A MESSAGE FROM JAMES McMURTRY IN  ROLLING STONE : Perhaps you’ve heard, James McMurtry and BettySoo performed encores in drag at three shows in Tennessee to protest Tennessee’s anti-drag law. It seemed like the least we could do.   My bandmates and I stopped over in Greenville, Texas on the way home from Nashville after our brief foray into civil disobedience. I don’t like to do more than eight hours in a van anymore if I can help it. So we stopped in Greenville, where a sign that read, “Welcome to Greenville, Blackest Land, Whitest People” had hung over the main street well into the nineteen seventies.  The city took the sign down, but I don’t know if the populace ever discarded the sentiment, which seems to be resurgent all over the country, if it ever went away at all. I got a text from BettySoo, by then somewhere way up I-81 on her way to Vermont to visit her boyfriend, Charlie. She said Rachel Maddow might mention us on her show that night if there was time. Charlie and Ms. Maddow are buddies. It pays to know the right people. Later that night, I appeared on national TV for the first time since I was on Letterman in 1989, and this time I didn’t have  to pay a dime to anyone on Madison Avenue to make it happen. All I had to do was know the right people and put on a red dress. Every man should wear a dress once or twice, just to learn a thing or two.... For more  CLICK HERE

Looking around at the people packed into the Bluebird Theater on Friday night, I realized my wife and I fell somewhere between the generation McMurtry was singing about and the children who ‘don’t know what that means’. Relative youth to those surrounding us didn’t lessen the sting of those words though. Growing up easier than our parents doesn’t guarantee a good night’s sleep, especially in the world we are living in today, so the occasional thrill of catching a good whiskey buzz while singing and dancing along to poetry about the human condition isn’t an age specific activity.

McMurtry doesn’t shy away from politics when addressing the woes of the average working American (the police officer posted in front of the venue the entire night was just another reminder of the current dangers we face as a society), but he doesn’t let the message stifle the high spirits of his audience. Backed by a rowdy, but extraordinary bar band consisting of guitarist/accordion player Tim Holt, drummer Daren Hess, and bassist Cornbread, McMurtry led the Denver faithful through a two-hour, career-spanning set of stories that gave tribute to the world outside, while simultaneously making us forget about it.

McMurtry and his band took the stage around 10:00pm, after an engaging, sometimes humorous, acoustic set by Max Gomez. A few kinks in the sound and some microphone issues were worked out by the time “Red Dress” came to a close — giving way to a fine performance of “Just Us Kids”. Sporting a fresh haircut (gone were his signature curls), groomed goatee, and his usual panama hat, the man of the hour introduced “How’m I Gonna Find You Now” as “the one that was supposed to be my first big radio hit”, before admitting he’d had “a bunch of those ‘supposed to be’ hits” along the way.

An extended run of new material followed, proving the man is still at the top of his game (and maybe better than ever) after close to thirty years on the road. The wry smile he wore on his face revealed his sarcasm to be secondary to his love of being on the stage. “I wrote this one in the R Bar in New Orleans, where I was just the perfect amount of drunk and pissed off that I could write a song…’course I had to it write fast.” “I Ain’t Got No Place” was the song he was referring to.

Wednesday 8th February. The Garage. James McMurtry. It’s been over seven years since McMurtry last graced these shores. That night it was a solo show at the Borderline. Tonight it’s a full band. The gig has been upgraded from the way too small but great venue of the Lexington to the Garage tonight.

McMurtry is a singer songwriter from Texas whose dry self-deprecating wit and storytelling songs are his trademarks. And he doesn’t disappoint with either tonight.

It’s a best off set tonight with no album to promote although there are a few from his last the excellent ‘Complicated Game’ came out a couple of years ago now. An understated guitarist but he sure can play and his backing are really tight tonight powering through the tracks.

McMurtry’s voice is reminiscent of Dylan but much better and most songs are full of wonderful stories that take you away on a musical journey.

With such an impressive back catalogue picking a highlight is tricky but ‘Just us Kids’ and ‘You got to me’ stand out for me. Requests are quickly shut down with the ‘you know what you want me to play but you don’t know what I’m going to play’.

Time flies for the nearly two hour set running way over the curfew. Let’s hope it’s not another seven years before he graces these shores again.

A great night and keep on rockin y’all

It’s evident from the way that he masters the guitar that James McMurty has been playing since he was a child. The Texan singer/songwriter gave a solid and exciting performance of his rock and roll and folk music along with his talented band members. As soon as he took to the stage, after a very brief hello, he launched into Freeway View accompanied by this full band, and with the addition of backing vocals, filling out the sound. Although there weren’t many people at the show, the atmosphere was great, McMurtry took tome to engage with us in the crowd, and give us little explanations of the origins of his songs and reveal the motivations of their narratives. It was really special to hear such in depth analysis from the artist himself, and in my opinion one of the best songwriters living at the moment.

He played through Just Us Kids chronologically, and it was awesome to hear it live, as I’ve listened to the recording over and over again. Towards the end of the set, he revealed that he has an album in the pipeline called Complicated Game, and played us a track from their as a preview. It was incredibly exciting to hear the music before it’s released. The show was everything I was hoping for and more, I’d definitely see him live if you get the chance.

Before last night's concert, I could not have imagined liking James McMurtry eve better as a solo act than when he is accompanied by his band, but that's exactly how I'm feeling right now. Maybe it was because I could hear him singing his incredible lyrics better in this acoustic setting than I could with his band playing. Maybe I could hear his unusual guitar tunings better. Maybe he felt more "at home" in Fort Worth with a wildly appreciative audience than he can when he's performing in certain other cities. All I know is, he is the virtual definition of authenticity without any false fanfare most musicians use to make their audiences happy and his performance last night at The W.E. Scott Theater in Fort Worth will never be forgotten. I uploaded three of the videos I recorded at the concert to my Facebook timeline, and after listening to these and other repeatedly, I went to his webpage and bought a few more of his cds today. The truth in his music continues to echo in my brain.

James was wonderful. He sang all his great songs, with the mesmerizing lyrics.

There was not a sell out crowd, but it was a nice venue.

The only down side was that the theater was so hot it was miserable! Grand Junction is a hot place and it requires air conditioning, not a swamp cooler.

James was great as always. He sprinkled his hits with his new material and worked the crowd very well. He started with a sparse audience, and when he was finished he had a tightly packed dancing crowd in front of the stage. I was able to speak to him afterwards and got a picture with him.

Fabulous show; McMurtry picked up where Bob Dylan left off; However JAMES McMurtry’s lyrics are more insightful interesting and intelligent. McMurtry also is an excellent guitarist. He interacts so well with the audience. He is a superb performer in so many ways.

JAMES McMURTRY NEW RELEASE THE HORSES AND THE HOUNDS, HIS FIRST FULL-LENGTH STUDIO ALBUM IN SEVEN YEARS, RELEASED AUGUST 20, 2021 ON NEW WEST RECORDS

Celebrated songwriter’s highly anticipated new record marks his debut on New West Records and garners a slew of “Best Of 2021” plus an Americana Music Association Song Of The Year Nomination for “Canola Fields”

AUSTIN, Texas — In James McMurtry’s new effort, The Horses and the Hounds, the acclaimed songwriter backs personal narratives with effortless elegance (“Canola Fields”) and endless energy (“If It Don’t Bleed”). This first collection in seven years, out August 20, 2021 on New West Records, spotlights a seasoned tunesmith in peak form as he turns toward reflection (“Vaquero”) and revelation ( closer “Blackberry Winter”). Familiar foundations guide the journey. “There’s a definite Los Angeles vibe to this record,” McMurtry says. “The ghost of Warren Zevon seems to be stomping around among the guitar tracks. Don’t know how he got in there. He never signed on for work for hire.”

The Horses and the Hounds is a reunion of sorts. McMurtry recorded the new album with legendary producer Ross Hogarth (John Fogerty, Van Halen, Keb’ Mo’) at Jackson Browne’s Groovemaster’s in Santa Monica, California, a world class studio that has housed such legends as Bob Dylan (2012’s Tempest) and David Crosby (2016’s Lighthouse) as well as Browne himself for I’m Alive (1993) and New Found Glory, Coming Home (2006). McMurtry and Hogarth first worked together 30 years ago, when Hogarth was a recording engineer in the employ of John Mellencamp at Mellencamp’s own Belmont Studios near Bloomington, Indiana. Hogarth recorded McMurtry’s first two albums, Too Long in the Wasteland and Candyland, for Columbia Records and later mixed McMurtry’s first self-produced album, Saint Mary of the Woods, for Sugar Hill Records. Another veteran of those three releases, guitarist David Grissom (Joe Ely, John Mellencamp, Dixie Chicks), returns with some of his finest work.

Accordingly, the new collection marks another upward trajectory: The Horses and the Hounds will be McMurtry’s debut album on genre-defining Americana record label New West Records (Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, Lucinda Williams, John Hiatt, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Buddy Miller, dozens more).

“I first became aware of James McMurtry’s formidable songwriting prowess while working at Bug Music Publishing in the ’90s,” says New West president John Allen. “He’s a true talent. All of us at New West are excited at the prospect of championing the next phase of James’ already successful and respected career.” McMurtry perfectly fits a label housing “artists who perform real music for real people.” After all, No Depression says of the literate songwriter’s most recent collection, Complicated Game: “Lyrically, the album is wise and adventurous, with McMurtry — who’s not prone to autobiographical tales — credibly inhabiting characters from all walks of life.” “[McMurtry] fuses wry, literate observations about the world with the snarl of barroom rock,” National Public Radio says. “The result is at times sardonic, subversive and funny, but often vulnerable and always poignant.”

His lauded storytelling — check out songs such as “Operation Never Mind” and “Ft. Walton Wake-Up Call” on The Horse and the Hounds— consistently has turned heads for decades now. “James writes like he’s lived a lifetime,” said John Mellencamp back in 1989, when Too Long in the Wasteland hit the Billboard 200. “James McMurtry is one of my very few favorite songwriters on Earth and these days he’s working at the top of his game,” says Americana all-star Jason Isbell. “He has that rare gift of being able to make a listener laugh out loud at one line and choke up at the next. I don’t think anybody writes better lyrics.” McMurtry’s albums Just Us Kids (2008) and Childish Things (2005) back the claim, each scoring endless critical praise. The former earned McMurtry his highest Billboard 200 chart position in two decades (since eclipsed by Complicated Game) and notched Americana Music Award nominations. Childish Things spent six full weeks topping the Americana Music Radio chart in 2005 and 2006, and won the Americana Music Association’s Album of the Year, with “We Can’t Make It Here” named the organization’s Song of the Year.

Other accolades include a 1996 Grammy nomination for Long Form Music Video for Where’d You Hide the Body and an American Indie Award for Best Americana Album for It Had to Happen (1997).

McMurtry tours year-round and consistently throws down unparalleled powerhouse performances, reflected in the release of two live discs: the universally lauded Live in Aught-Three on Compadre Records, and 2009’s Live in Europe, which captured the McMurtry band’s first European tour and extraordinary live set. Along with seasoned band members Ronnie Johnson, Daren Hess, and Tim Holt, Live in Europe features special guests Ian McLagan (Faces) and Jon Dee Graham (True Believers, Skunks). (Video of the performance is available on the included DVD.)

About James McMurtry

“Back before Napster and Spotify, we toured to promote record sales. Now we make records to promote tour dates.”

James McMurtry spins stories with a poet’s pen (“Long Island Sound”) and a painter’s precision (“She Loves Me”). Proof: The acclaimed songwriter’s new Complicated Game. McMurtry’s first collection in six years spotlights a craftsman in absolutely peak form as he turns from political toward personal (“These Things I’ve Come to Know,” “You Got to Me”). “The lyrical theme is mostly about relationships,” McMurtry says. “It’s also a little about the big old world verses the poor little farmer or fisherman. I never make a conscious decision about what to write about.”

Complicated Game delivers McMurtry’s trademark story songs time and again (“Copper Canteen,” “Deaver’s Crossing”), but the record brings a new (and certainly no less energetic) sonic approach. Simply put: McMurtry brings forth a another new masterpiece.

“How’m I Gonna Find You Now,” the record’s lead single boasts buoyant banjos and driving drums endlessly energetic. Whiplash vocals further frenzy the beat. “I’ve got a cup of black coffee so I don’t get lazy/I’ve got a rattle in the dashboard driving me crazy,” McMurtry effectively raps. “If I hit it with my fist, it’ll quit for a little while/Gonna have to stop to smoke in another mile/Headed into town gonna meet you at the mercantile/Take you to the Sonic get you grinning like a crocodile.”

Such vibrant vignettes consistently turn heads. They have for a quarter century now. Clearly, he’s only improving with time. “James McMurtry is one of my very few favorite songwriters on Earth and these days he’s working at the top of his game,” says Americana all-star Jason Isbell. “He has that rare gift of being able to make a listener laugh out loud at one line and choke up at the next. I don’t think anybody writes better lyrics.” “James writes like he’s lived a lifetime,” echoes iconic roots rocker John Mellencamp. Yes. Spin “South Dakota.” You’ll hear.

Further evidence: McMurtry’s Just Us Kids (2008) and Childish Things (2005). The former earned his highest Billboard 200 chart position in nearly two decades and notched Americana Music Award nominations. Meanwhile, Childish Things scored endless critical praise and spent six full weeks topping the Americana Music Radio chart in 2005 and 2006. In 2006, Childish Things won the Americana Music Association’s

Album of the Year and “We Can’t Make It Here” was named the rapidly rising organization’s Song of the Year.

Of course, Complicated Game doubles down on literate storytelling longtime enthusiasts expect. Recall high watermarks past: “Childish Things,” “Choctaw Bingo,” “Peter Pan,” “Levelland,” and “Out Here in the Middle” only begin the list. (Yes, Robert Earl Keen covered those last two, “Levelland” remaining a live staple.) Just Us Kids alone includes fan favorites “Hurricane Party,” “Ruby and Carlos” and “You’d a Thought.” High watermarks deliver equal measures depth and breadth and pierce hearts with sharp sociopolitical commentary (“Fireline Road”).

More history: McMurtry critically lauded first album Too Long in the Wasteland (1989) was produced by John Mellencamp and marked the beginning of a series of acclaimed projects for Columbia and Sugar Hill Records. In 1996, McMurtry received a Grammy nomination for Long Form Music Video for Where’d You Hide the Body. Additionally, It Had to Happen (1997) received the American Indie Award for Best Americana Album.

In 2004, McMurtry released the universally lauded Live in Aught-Three on Compadre Records. The following year, Childish Things notched arguably his most critical praise, spending six weeks at No. 1 on the Americana Music Radio Chart in 2005 and 2006. In September 2006, Childish Things and “We Can’t Make It Here” won the Americana Music Awards for Album and Song of the Year, respectively. McMurtry received more Americana Music Award nominations for 2008’s Just Us Kids. This album marked his highest Billboard 200 chart position in more than nearly two decades. In 2009, Live in Europe was released, capturing the McMurtry band’s first European tour and extraordinary live set. Along with seasoned band members Ronnie Johnson, Daren Hess, and Tim Holt, the disc features special guests Ian McLagan (The Faces) and Jon Dee Graham (True Believers, Skunks).

The poignant lyrics of his immense catalog still ring true today. In 2011, “We Can’t Make It Here” was cited among The Nation’s “Best Protest Songs Ever.” “‘We Can’t Make It Here,’” Bob Lefsetz wrote, “has stood the test of time because of its unmitigated truth.”

McMurtry tours year round and consistently throws down unparalleled powerhouse performances. The Washington Post notes: “Much attention is paid to James McMurtry’s lyrics and rightfully so: He creates a novel’s worth of emotion and experience in four minutes of blisteringly stark couplets. What gets overlooked, however, is that he’s an accomplished rock guitar player … serious stuff, imparted by a singularly serious band.”

With Benn & Abel Image

About Benn & Abel

Benn & Abel hail from the least Montanan part of Montana; where a hipster can pretend to be a cowboy, a drinker can call themselves an outdoorsman, and a musician can don a felt hat and call it Americana. They live in the space between Bluegrass, Americana, and the Blues, just like the melting pot town they call home. Their songs range from the sad, existential crisis of working musicians in these times, to the childish love songs that people from all walks of life can relate to. Influences vary from from guitar players like Chet Atkins, to songwriters such as Doc Watson and duos like the Milk Carton Kids.

Benn & Abel, based in Bozeman, MT, have been playing around the west as a duo for the past three years. They have played venues ranging from empty bars to sold out venues. Often accompanied by a band featuring a Fiddle, Standup Bass and Drums to fill a room, the duo of Benn & Abel can create an equal impact. Benn Busalacchi is the driving force between the duo’s songwriting and lyrical inspiration, where Abel Barnhart’s unique guitar style distinguishes their music, riding the line between blues and bluegrass.

James McMurtry’s “The Horses and the Hounds” National U.S. Tour

Article contributed by new west records | published on saturday, july 23, 2022.

james mcmurtry tour dates 2022

In James McMurtry ’s new effort, The Horses and the Hounds , the acclaimed songwriter backs personal narratives with effortless elegance (“Canola Fields”) and endless energy (“If It Don’t Bleed”). This first collection in seven years, due August 20 on New West Records , spotlights a seasoned tunesmith in peak form as he turns toward reflection (“Vaquero”) and revelation ( closer “Blackberry Winter”).

McMurtry recorded the new album with legendary producer Ross Hogarth (John Fogerty, Van Halen, Keb’ Mo’) at Jackson Browne’s Groove Masters in Santa Monica, California, a world class studio that has housed such legends as Bob Dylan (2012’s Tempest) and David Crosby (2016’s Lighthouse) as well as Browne himself for I’m Alive (1993) and New Found Glory, Coming Home (2006).

“The result is at times sardonic, subversive and funny, but often vulnerable and always poignant.”   His lauded storytelling — check out songs such as “Operation Never Mind” and “Ft. Walton Wake-Up Call” on The Horses and the Hounds— consistently has turned heads for decades now. The former earned McMurtry his highest Billboard 200 chart position in two decades (since eclipsed by Complicated Game) and notched Americana Music Honors & Awards nominations.

Progressive jam giants Umphrey's McGee‘s return to Las Vegas for the seventh installment of the massively popular UMBowl production was marked once again by a stand-out tour closing dual evening extravaganza where all stops were pulled out and the power given directly to the fans, for better or for worse.

On June 24, Round Records & ATO Records will release GarciaLive Volume Six: July 5, 1973 – Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders, the latest installment of the celebrated GarciaLive archival series. The three-CD set was recorded at the 200 capacity Lion’s Share club formerly located in the small town of San Anselmo, CA, just 20 miles north of San Francisco. The performance features Jerry Garcia performing with friend, mentor and legendary keyboardist/vocalist Merl Saunders. The duo is joined by drummer Bill Vitt and bassist John Kahn, who soon became a lifelong Garcia collaborator.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
