Bridges of Chicago - Chicago river cruise

A Chicago river cruise for Travel Photo Mondays

Not really knowing much about downtown Chicago, I thought the perfect start would be to take a river cruise as an introduction to see this magnificent city and skyline from a water vantage point. Even though the day was cold and drizzly, I knew that it would be fun to see the city cruising on the Chicago River to see and learn about the architecture and history of Chicago from its early development to present day. So I went to down to the newly created Chicago Riverwalk area where the river cruise boats were ready for the morning tour, definitely one of the most romantic things to do in Chicago.

Chicago river cruise on the Chicago First Lady cruise

Chicago river cruise on the Chicago First Lady cruise

Chicago’s First Lady Cruises

I signed up for an architectural river cruise on Chicago’s First Lady cruises which is a line of recreated river boats that offers  tours and charters around Chicago River and Lake Michigan.  The morning cruise gives an excellent history tour of the city with an architectural tour that highlights significant architecture from Chicago’s classical period to contemporary styles that create the skyline of Chicago. Chicago’s First Lady Cruise looks nostalgic in the city like it would be more suited to a getaway outside of Chicago , but in reality fits perfectly as a contrast to the city architecture.

Chicago river cruise on a cold drizzly day on the Chicago river

The nice part of taking this tour was the collaboration with the Chicago Architecture foundation – a knowledgeable local architect came on board and showcased all the amazing skyscrapers that are a part of the city’s impressive skyline. I found out that a part of the ticket price supports the architecture learning programs which are an excellent educational part of the river tour.

Architectural details and reflections Chicago river cruise

Architectural details and reflections

The architecture of Chicago has been a major influence on American architecture where many of the newly built skyscrapers were started in Chicago. After the great Chicago fire of 1871, many of the prominent buildings from prominent architects of the Chicago Sc hool were built along the riverfront downtown area. This created a new era of building and engineering firsts in Chicago including: structural steel frame, tube frame, large exterior glass panels and many of the first modern skyscrapers built in America. Well known architects left their marks on Chicago’s impressive skyline including Mies Van der Rohe, Martin Roche, Daniel Burnham, Louis Sullivan and a host of other important American architects.

Bridges of Chicago – Chicago river cruise

Another interesting facet of the Chicago River cruise are the many movable bridges throughout the city. In less that two miles of river frontage, there are over 18 movable bridges that cross the Chicago River in the downtown area.  From the river tour, we were able to go under many of the different types of bridges including: the Double leaf, Trunnion, Bascule and the local Chicago type bridge.  From our guide, we learn that movable bridges were used primarily on the Chicago River because of the flat and low landscape of the city and the bridges were more practical and cheaper to build in this area.

In spite of the foggy morning, this really was a nice introduction to visiting Chicago and getting a quick impression of the city, its major monuments and huge skyscrapers that shaped American architecture to what it is today. It was fun cruising in on the Chicago river even though I found it challenging to photograph the city in bad weather. For anyone touring and taking photographs in unruly conditions, take a look at this post I wrote on how to photograph on grey or rainy days here.

I also had the good fortune to go on an architecture tour of Chicago via the Chicago Rivera. It was a treat. It was also before digital photography, so I can’t check my photos to remind myself what the weather was like that day. As always, your photos more than do it justice. I’ve pinned the one with the interesting lighting fixtures. As disappointing as the weather probably was, I agree that you used it skillfully to enhance rather than detract from your photos. Nice.

Carole Terwilliger Meyers

I’ve taken that architectural river cruise on Chicago’s First Lady in the past. It is fabulous! In fact, all of the tours offered by the Chicago Architecture foundation are worthwhile, including the Frank Lloyd Wright tours, http://travelswithcarole.blogspot.com/2013/08/sights-to-see-frank-lloyd-wright-tours.html

Marilyn Jones

I have been to Chicago many times, but never took the cruise; I must do that next time!! A totally different perspective of the city.

Sue Reddel

Noel you did a wonderful job capturing our beautiful city even on the greyest of days. I always recommend that river cruise to anyone visiting and have taken many a house guest on that trip as well. Hearing the history seeing the architecture never gets old. I feel very lucky to have worked in an office on the river for many years. When things got a little stressed I would stop and take the time to enjoy the view – it’s amazing. It was also nice to meet you in person during your short visit. Hope you’ll come back again and get a bit nicer weather. Great post!

Cathy Sweeney

I think that the architecture boat tour in Chicago is one of the best tours in the country. I loved it and I’m from Chicago! I love that city for many reasons, and one of them is the wonderful architecture — the old, the new working so well together. Thanks for the great pics of the city sights that mean a lot to me.

Paula McInerney

Chicago looks eerily enticing. I love the architecture and the light that you have captured.

Linja

Sorry you didn’t gave a sunnier day! I’ve been to Chicago but not for long visits.

Susan Moore

I didn’t have time for a river cruise when I last visited Chicago, I would love to do this! Wonderful photos, they look like they are from another time in history, there’s a vintage look to them.

Anita @ No Particular Place To Go

I’ve yet to visit Chicago and love the idea of taking a river cruise on the Chicago River to see some of it’s stand out architecture and the moving bridges downtown. Loved your photos which seemed mysterious and shrouded in fog – very atmospheric!

Suzanne Stavert

We took the cruise as well, however it was 95 degrees and blistering hot! I could not get over the incredible architecture and historic buildings in Chicago. My photos are completely different taken in the sunlight. I love the mood of your photos. Very lovely!

Life Images by Jill

thank you for the river cruise. Chicago’s skyline is certainly a mix of the old and new architecture. The foggy morning made me think of “gangsters” movies! Happy travels.

Betsy Wuebker | PassingThru

I love what you do with murky weather. Your photos convey a sense of vintage mystery that I find more compelling than the many sunnier views I’ve seen of Chicago. I’ve been a frequent visitor to the city, having grown up in Michigan and lived in Minnesota for so many years. But you’ve shown me these familiar places in a very new way.

Noel

Sometimes you really have to make the best of it and just work the angles and composition to convey the best details and feel. Thanks for the comments Betsy

Rhonda Albom

I grew up in Chicago and didn’t leave until my mid 20s. However, I went on this same river cruise on my last visit there about 6 years ago and that is where I learned much of what you talk about here. Great photos = great memories. When I was little, Marina City (the round buildings) were always my favorite site to see in the city, even though I have never been in them.

budget jan

Hi Noel, We’ve just returned from 10 weeks in Europe so I hope to be back to linking to your Travel Photo Monday segment again. This boat trip in Chicago is so atmospheric and you have captured the feel of the river with the clouds/mist gorgeously. I wish I was on board trying to capture the feel as well. It is amazing that they have so many bridges that move, although I can see how that would be a good option for them. It would be interesting to see them in action. I pinned my favourite photo – the Water Taxi Service. Cheers. Jan

This Is The Best Chicago River Cruise

By Logan DeLoye

June 24, 2022

Chicago River Cityscape Twilight Dusk

Chicago offers so many boat tours and river cruises that it can be overwhelming to choose just one. When choosing a boat tour that encompasses the best sites that the city has to offer, consider this highly-rated option.

According to a list compiled by Timeout , the best boat tour in all of Chicago is the Chicago Architecture Foundation Center River Cruise . This cruise is perfect for travelers and locals with a genuine interest in the history behind building the famous Windy City skyline. The tour also offers riders a discount on tickets into the Chicago Architecture Center. The whole cruise lasts an hour and a half and costs $51.96 before tax per rider. Those looking to embark on this adventure can access the boat at the northeast corner of Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive.

Here is what Timeout had to say about the one-of-a-kind tour:

"There's a reason the Chicago Architecture Foundation's beloved tour has been named the Best Boat Tour in the U.S. The center’s official tour goes into detail on more than 50 buildings both on the riverfront and beyond. In doing so, they give a fascinating history of the city and those that built it—plus you can easily upgrade your ticket to include entry to just Chicago Architecture Center itself. It’s a proper design enthusiasts’ dream. This one leaves from the Chicago First Lady Cruises dock and lasts around 90 minutes. For a real treat, gather friends for the serene evening cruise for just a few dollars more."

You can float down the Chicago River in a ‘Hot Tub Boat' beginning this week

Opening day is already sold out, according to organizers, published december 4, 2023 • updated on december 4, 2023 at 12:22 pm.

Ever dreamt of floating down the Chicago River...in a hot tub? This week, that dream could come true.

Beginning Friday, the Chicago Electric Boat Company will offer "hot tub boats" and heated boat rides for the winter months in the city. And according to organizers, the experience is quite popular, as opening day is "fully booked."

24/7 Chicago news stream: Watch NBC 5 free wherever you are

"Picture this: a bubbling hot tub, on a boat, cruising the Chicago River. It’s not just a boat ride; it’s a floating paradise, exclusively yours to enjoy," the company wrote in a release.

The 90-minute, six-passenger hot tub boat cruise is now taking reservations for the months of November and December, as well as "all of 2024."

Feeling out of the loop? We'll catch you up on the Chicago news you need to know. Sign up for the weekly Chicago Catch-Up newsletter here.

The price for the boats starts at $158 per hour on the week days, and $156 per our on the weekends, with two-hour windows available starting Dec. 8.

While food will not be allowed on the boats, riders can bring alcohol.

"Make sure to designate a sober captain," the company said.

When it comes to cleanliness, Chicago Electric Boat Company said the boats have an "internal filtration system" that both heats and cleans the water in the hot tub while the boat is docked.

"We employ a chemical-free, all-natural cleaning process. This method includes the use of a chlorinator probe with a gentle salt solution while the boat is docked, initiating an electrolysis process to achieve the highest level of water cleanliness," the company's website reads.

In addition to the hot tub boats, the boating group said it also transformed its popular "Duffy boats," enclosing them with a built-in heater.

"Imagine gliding along the Chicago River, snug in the warmth of your private vessel, surrounded by the magical winter scenery," the company said. "Your favorite river adventure is now a four-season affair, and we can’t wait for you to experience a new season on the river."

Local news | fdny at fault in fire boat crash that killed visiting belgian firefighter, coast guard finds.

A speeding FDNY boat sightseeing at the Statue of Liberty was at fault in a crash with another vessel that killed a visiting Belgian firefighter , the Coast Guard has determined.

Victim Johnny Beernaert, 54, was aboard the department craft Marine 1 Bravo June 17, 2022 with three other civilians, including his wife, and one on-duty firefighter.

The Marine 1 Bravo was zipping through the East River topping out at 24 knots on the “favorable” day with calm seas and clear skies, according to the findings of the investigation.

Port side of the FDNY M1B depicting lengthwise damage and bent top and bottom door frame sections.

The department vessel slammed into chartered harbor cruise “Honcho,” which was traveling at about 5 knots, severely damaging both boats.

Beernaert suffered a severe head injury in the crash and was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, but he could not be saved.

Three other passengers on the fireboat were taken to the same hospital, where they were treated and released.

The Coast Guard found excessive speed and inadequate lookout on the part of Marine 1 Bravo caused the devastating crash.

Approximation of the FDNY M1B and the UPV HONCHO arrangement upon colliding.

The boat was not sufficiently staffed according to the FDNY’s standards, which require a three-person crew for operations. The probe also criticized the lack of oversight for non-emergency cruising, which could have saved Beernaert’s life, according to the Coast Guard findings.

In the aftermath of the crash, both the city and the FDNY reviewed their marine patrol operations and acknowledged the lapses that led to Beernaert’s death. The department has since enhanced protocols, particularly concerning non-emergency cruising, according to the 28-page investigation report.

In July, Beernaert’s widow, Heidi Vermandel, filed a federal lawsuit seeking unspecified damages from the city, citing that she “suffered severe personal injuries … [and] negligent infliction of emotional distress,” the Daily News previously reported.

FDNY M1B Passenger Arrangement and Impact Overview.

“She was in the zone of being killed due to the collision … and as a result, suffered great physical and emotional trauma,” the suit reads.

She is also suing the City of New York, New York City Boat Tours — which was operating the Honcho — and the tour boat’s skipper, Edward Mattiace.

Despite the Coast Guard’s findings, Vermandel’s attorney believes Mattiace should have been able to avoid the speeding fire boat.

“I’ve seen videotape from the Brooklyn Bridge, which shows that close to two minutes, the two boats were closing in on each other,” said attorney Paul Hofmann. “Both boats lost situational awareness, both operators lost situational awareness. They both failed to see what they should have seen.

“Clearly the Fire Department vessel was going, as the Coast Guard said, too fast for the area and the location they were riding in and their lookout was insufficient,” he added. “But the operator of both boats should have seen each other long before they got into extremis.”

An FDNY spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment.
