Christmas movies

I am a huge fan of musicals. I grew up listening to and watching classics from the past, such as “The Sound of Music,” then graduated to Broadway shows as a teenager… and “Journey to Bethlehem” fits squarely into the latter category, with its catchy songs, likable characters, and meaningful character arcs. It’s a film made more for unbelievers who might use this story to launch their interest in faith than purely for Christian audiences, but as a believer and a musical fan, I enjoyed it.

When a star appears in the heavens, the three wise men rouse themselves to travel to Judea in search of a prophesied future king , to be born of a humble virgin . As they make their way hundreds of miles, the audience is transported to meet Mary ( Fiona Palamo ), a hopeful would-be teacher who is disappointed to learn her father has chosen a husband for her, a man she has never met named Joseph ( Milo Manheim ), who has just moved to Nazareth from the little town of Bethlehem . After an adorable cute meet between them, the two hit it off on the wrong foot at their betrothal ceremony, but decide to try and make their marriage work, for the sake of their families (and, let’s face it, they like each other).

Then an angel appears to Mary in the middle of the night and tells her she has been chosen to carry the future Messiah . People don’t believe her when she tells them this, and Joseph feels torn over what to do about it, to reject her quietly or marry her anyway to provide a home and protection for her unborn child.

While he deliberates on this, King Herod ( Antonio Banderas ) suffers from sleepless nights and nightmares that coincide with the return of his eldest son, Antipater ( Joel Smallbone ). And when he learns they may be tied to a future king about to be born in his realm… well, he smirks at the wise men , they should find this baby so all four kings can worship him together.

Making a successful musical is a whole different ball of wax than your typical film; music is a powerful medium that reaches into your soul, and you can express ten times as much character development in a three minute song than you can in an hour of dialog, and that’s what this film does best. Its terrific numbers show us the internal wrestling (sometimes literally) of its characters.

Mary has to ponder how she can be the mother of a divine child , when she feels as if she needs God to carry her instead. Joseph goes to battle against his own doubts, as he argues back and forth over whether to believe in her incredible story. And Antipater has perhaps the most profound, touching song, as he deliberates within himself whether having his father’s blood in him condemns him to be evil, or if he has a choice. (This song also speaks to every child who has ever tried to please a father who did not deserve their admiration.)

There are other songs as well, some of them preppy and fun (the initial “get married” song, and the “Three Wise Guys”), and others more serious and contemplative; Banderas’ number tells you in two minutes that Herod is a psychopath and a narcissist, who thinks he is God (“Mine is the power… Mine is the glory…”).

All of the music is so catchy, I’ve been replaying it and singing it ever since seeing the film (which I watched twice in twenty-four hours, I enjoyed it so much).

The production is top-notch; the director/producer said a lot of prayer went into each day of filming, and he felt a spiritual pushback that made the entire process challenging but also deepened his own faith.

An array of talent is involved, with incredible singing voices, but the standout performances belong to Palomo and Manheim as the charismatic young couple at the center of the drama, and Banderas, who smirks and simpers and glowers his way through a prime role as King Herod. You can tell how much fun he had being deranged.

The costumes are all lovely, and it’s a colorful experience from start to finish, with bits of humor thrown into the mix. I’ve seen it compared to a “Christian version of The Greatest Showman ” and there’s some truth to that, in its larger-than-life approach to storytelling.

Issues of Concern

But this movie doesn’t come without some caveats; where is the problem with it, from a believer’s perspective rather than just as a musical fan? It’s not Scripture and doesn’t try to be. The characters are modernized and given arcs to overcome; Mary wants a career rather than a husband at first, but becomes wholly devoted to taking care of this child. She is a strong female who reminds Joseph he was also “Chosen” for this task, giving him the courage to step up and protect her when it counts.

Things are left out that could have been included (I expected Elizabeth to give some sign that “her child leapt within her womb” when Mary approached).

It deviates from Scripture in omitting certain conversations and details, and rearranging other events. It adds humor ( Gabriel practices his speech before he wakes Mary, and even bonks his head into a low beam, to show he isn’t used to having a human-like form) and uses the three wise men as comic relief. They are not as funny as the script tries to make them be, and at times their dialog is cringe.

It’s not a reverent take on these events, but a “musical” take, which means a lot of comedy, romance, and angst. Beyond that, the ending is a little contrived (I can think of a better way to do it, but given the history of Antipater , I know why they made the creative choices they did, and it makes it bittersweet if you know anything about what happened to him later).

I saw it with three other people over the Christmas holidays; one of them felt concerned that it deviated so much from scripture, and wished it had not made so many changes, but the rest of us enjoyed it.

It’s a film to make up your own mind about, based on what you feel comfortable with and what is appropriate for your personal faith. If you do not like anything “added to or taken away from” the nativity story, this isn’t the movie for you; but if you are looking for a musical with songs that stick in your head for days as an escape from most of the filth Hollywood churns out these days, or a film to share with your unbeliever friends that might pique their interest in the greatest story ever told, give it a chance.

‘It’s the most personal story I’ll ever tell,’ director says about new film ‘Journey to Bethlehem’

Adam anders of ‘glee’ fame says ‘journey to bethlehem’ was 17 years in the making.

Fiona Palomo and Milo Manheim in “Journey to Bethlehem.”

By Hanna Seariac

For director Adam Anders, “Journey to Bethlehem” is a dream come true.

The new, live-action musical chronicles the story of the birth of Jesus. It stars Antonio Banderas (Herod), Milo Manheim (Joseph), Fiona Palomo (Mary) and Geno Segers (Balthazar) and puts a contemporary twist on the musical element of the movie.

Anders is best known for his work as the producer of the “Glee” albums. His work earned him four Grammy nominations. Before now, much of Anders’ work has been in producing, but “Journey to Bethlehem” marks his directorial debut.

The story of how the film came together starts 17 years ago, Anders told me in a video call. He and his wife were visiting family in Iowa and he couldn’t find “anything to watch” that was both a Christmas movie and a musical.

Over the course of the last 17 years, Anders has tried to get the film made, but for one reason or another, he’s run into delays and roadblocks.

“It’s been challenged all along the way, but I think each challenge has made me learn something,” Anders said. “All the failures in trying to make this movie I think made me understand what I needed to do and do better.”

“It was in COVID where we got shut down,” he continued. “I had six months with nothing to do. I started over. I was like, ‘Let me just learn from all my mistakes and try to get this right.’ So, that ended up being a blessing to have that time to reflect and get it right.”

In the process of making the movie, Anders was praying every day. Throughout the development of the movie, he felt like his faith was growing stronger.

“I’ve had to rely on it to get through some of the hard times and some of the trials. I think even now there’s a strike and all these years trying to get a movie made and then, it’s coming out during the strike is really like, ‘Why? What’s going on?’” he said. But, he emphasized, “You’ve got to trust that there’s a plan and it’s going to work out.”

After nearly two decades, the movie is finally debuting on Nov. 10 in theaters.

“This is the most personal project I’ve ever done, and I’ve actually talked to my wife about it. I don’t know that I’ll ever have one that’s this special to me, to my faith,” Anders said.

The film certainly has faith elements in it, but Anders also wants to convince everyone to attend, regardless of if they are religious or not. He thinks everyone wants to “get in the Christmas spirit, whether you’re a believer or not” and his movie is a way to do that.

“It’s inclusive. It’s fun. The music is amazing,” he said. “Music unites people and it crosses borders and barriers and it pulls down the fence.”

“And because we’re telling the love story of Mary and Joseph, it’s like the original ‘Romeo and Juliet.’ We have a great villain in Herod and we have comic relief in The Wise Men. It’s everything you need to have a great family movie to sit down and watch and enjoy,” he added.

The process behind making the movie and music for the movie was intense, Anders said. He moved to Spain for six months to film and had to weave together the script with the songs.

“My favorite song in the movie is probably ‘Mother to a Savior and King’ because it’s so powerful and beautiful,” he said. “My wife and I, ... our first date was writing a song together, and now 25 years later, we’re still writing songs together. We feel like it’s the best song we’ve written.”

In addition to Anders directing the film, he and his wife, Nikki Anders, picked up credits as composers and producers.

While making the movie, Anders was laser-focused on coming up with a “fun and vibrant” film that also honored the story.

“It’s a true story for me. It’s part of my life and my faith. And it means so much to me,” he said. “So, I hope that comes across in the movie, even though we’re having fun with it.”

“I think it’s the most personal story I’ll ever tell, like I said. And I hope I’ve done it justice.”

Movie Review: With ‘The Journey’ Bocelli gives us a Holy Week treat

the journey christian movie 2023

In recent years, the Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli has enjoyed international success while frequently offering traditional Christian songs to a mass audience. Blind since the age of 12 and experiencing significant success as a singer while only in his 30s, Bocelli has known hardship in his life, but his art and faith are nonetheless rooted in gratitude. His spiritual life has been heavily influenced by the Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy, and in the 1990s, Bocelli reembraced the Catholic faith of his youth. Following in the long tradition of the people of God offering beautiful music in expressions of joy and sorrow, gratitude and distress, Bocelli’s music is appreciated by many as a gifted and graceful source of hope.

In celebration of his faith, family, friends, and homeland, Bocelli recently embarked on a 200-mile pilgrimage — on horseback — along the Via Francigena, from Rome to his provincial Italian estate. The result is the new film “The Journey: A Musical Special from Andrea Bocelli,” directed by Gaetano Morbioli and Paolo Sodi for the Trinity Broadcasting Network, and coming exclusively to theaters from Fathom Events April 2-4 and again on April 6. For established fans of Bocelli and the artists with whom he travels and performs, the film will be a welcome treat for Holy Week.

the journey christian movie 2023

“The Journey” begins with a delightful, but all-too-brief cameo from Pope Francis, who blesses Bocelli and his fellow travelers as they set out in dramatic fashion on horseback from St. Peter’s Basilica. Chief among Bocelli’s riding companions is his wife, Veronica, who also is one of the film’s executive producers. One scene features the couple’s young daughter, Virginia, whom Bocelli serenades in an empty church with a version of “Ave Maria” that he had written for her a few years earlier. In another scene, Bocelli performs Schubert’s familiar version of the same sacred text in a picturesque landscape.

The film alternates between stunning drone shots of the Italian countryside, conversations on horseback between Bocelli and his friends, and dramatically staged performances in a variety of outdoor and indoor settings along the route. Given the number of contemporary Christian artists who appear with Bocelli in this project, some Catholic viewers may find themselves encountering artists such as Tori Kelly, Michael W. Smith, Tauren Wells and Hillsong United’s Taya Gaukrodgers for the very first time. Classical music fans may enjoy seeing and hearing from the world-famous Welsh crossover singer Katherine Jenkins, Bach specialist Ramin Bahrami, conductor Beatrice Venezi, and the Croatian cellist duo, 2CELLOS, who have become a YouTube sensation.

Along the way, Bocelli reflects on his disability, his career and most of all his family. Toward the end of the film, he meets up with his adult son, Matteo, who reads his father a letter of appreciation while Bocelli strums a Spanish guitar. The film concludes with an outdoor celebration at Bocelli’s home, with spontaneous music, wine and conversation — the epitome of the art of living Italians are famous for.

From a strictly faith-filled perspective, “The Journey”might have been more spiritually enriching had Bocelli and his companions spoken more about the holy sites along the route. Bocelli barely mentions his own devoutness, although it may be clear enough from his encounter with the pope and his choice of Catholic devotional anthems. And while many of the songs from the evangelical performers might not resonate with all Catholics, we can all appreciate the ecumenical spirit of the whole group’s performance of “Amazing Grace” at the end of the film.

Catholics may hope that “The Journey” ( https://thejourney.movie/ ) may stir the hearts of all viewers for Christ, his church, and the Kingdom of Heaven — the last of which feels at times to be very near in the beauty of Bocelli’s native soil.

Movie Review

It’s the same old story: Boy meets girl. Boy loses girl. Boy and girl get engaged. Girl discovers that she’s carrying the Son of God. Boy—

Ah. So maybe this story isn’t quite a cookie-cutter romance after all. This one involves quite a bit more sand than your standard Drew Barrymore flick. It’s got ancient prophecies and power-hungry, sleep-deprived kings; angels of the Lord and rather feisty donkeys.

It’s the Nativity story. And even if this version looks and feels a little different than most renditions do, I’m sure most of you know the story well.

And it is a love story: the love between a man and a woman; the love between a king and his throne; and most importantly, the love that our Creator has for His creation—and how that love manifested in one cosmos-changing gift.

And let’s not forget all the song-and-dance numbers!

Positive Elements

Journey to Bethlehem is an imaginative take on a very familiar story—and it adds some dramatic wrinkles to the characters therein. There will be some Christians who will oppose the movie’s extrabiblical flourishes on principle, and I get that. But as we dive into this section, I’ll be treating the movie’s characters as just that: characters. In other words, they’re creative constructs that stand a bit apart from the real people they’re based on.

The Mary we meet here is intelligent, a bit headstrong and deeply faithful. Her parents have arranged a marriage for her with someone she’s never even met, and Mary doesn’t like that one little bit. She wants to be a teacher, not a helpmate to a stranger. But even if she’s angry that her parents are pushing into a marriage she doesn’t want (and makes her feelings known about that), she’s also mindful of the respect and obedience she owes her parents. She doesn’t like the decision, but she accepts it.

Joseph (who’s much younger than the one we often see in Christian tradition) also wasn’t given a choice. But he warms up to Mary quickly. Good thing, because their engagement gets off to a rocky start.

First, he must fight (somewhat literally, in the movie’s imaginative setting) with his own skepticism regarding Mary’s mysterious pregnancy. Then he must protect his small family: He finds a safe place for Mary to give birth. Shortly thereafter, he plots a hasty trip to Egypt to escape the evil clutches of King Herod. Throughout it all, Joseph shows himself to be a resourceful, protective an incredibly resilient guy.

The Wise Men—three of them, as tradition dictates, named Balthazar, Gaspar and Melchior—do their part to protect Mary, Joseph and especially their new baby. And the holy family receives help from an unexpected quarter as well.

Spiritual Elements

Journey to Bethlehem is, as you might expect, an inherently spiritual story. And even though this version of the Nativity is filled with songs and dances and jokes, director Adam Anders and his cohorts tried to honor the story’s holy message.

“While taking some creative license, the filmmakers strived to remain true to the message of the greatest story ever told,” moviegoers will read at the end.

Mary and Joseph may feel like characters from a musical romcom. But they’ve clearly been given a sacred task: bringing the Son of God into the world.

The movie leaves no doubt about who the true Father of Jesus is. Just as we read in the Bible, Mary is visited by Gabriel (who practices what he’s going to tell Mary before greeting her). “God has chosen you to have a Son,” the angel tells her, the “King of all kings.” And when Mary says that’s impossible, Gabriel answers, “Nothing is impossible when it’s God’s will.”

Gabriel also says that Mary is “more blessed than any other woman.” We’re told that it’s because of her great faith that she was so favored. She reads the Scriptures. She knows the Law. Still, she’s frustrated about why God didn’t clue other folks in. No one believes her story, after all, and her own family ships her off to her cousin Elizabeth’s house in shame.

Elizabeth doesn’t doubt, though. The older woman was the recipient of her own miracle pregnancy: We know from the Bible that Gabriel visited Elizabeth’s husband, a Jewish priest named Zechariah, and told him that Elizabeth was going to have a very special baby named John—a big surprise, considering how old both of them were. Zechariah was struck dumb after that conversation.

He still can’t speak when Mary comes to visit. When Mary expresses her bewilderment, even her exasperation, about how this unexpected pregnancy has impacted her, she asks Elizabeth, “When will I understand?”

Elizabeth smiles. “If my husband could talk, he would say, Patience is a good companion for faith .”

Mary’s not the only one expectantly awaiting the Son of God’s arrival. The Magi from the East see the star in the sky and begin their travels immediately (ultimately arriving very shortly after Jesus is born). But they need some other “ancient scrolls” to narrow down the exact location of where this divine King will be born, so they go to Herod’s palace.

Naturally, Herod’s not too keen on another king being born in his realm, divine or no. So he dispatches his son, Antipater, to take care of the matter. “It should not be difficult to locate an unwed peasant girl claiming to carry the child of a Hebrew God,” Antipater sniffs.

Also worth noting: Herod sings a song about the joys of being a king, which includes lyrics that narcissistically echo those from the Lord’s Prayer (which is yet to be written, but it neatly tells viewers of Herod’s own self-aggrandizement). “Mine is the kingdom/Mine is the power/Mine is the glory forever!” Herod sings. He clearly sees himself as worthy of worship (and says as much).

Herod’s throne is set in front of a gigantic lion’s head, incidentally, its mouth open in a snarl. The statue signifies his intimidating power and kingship. But the film itself may embrace a double meaning, given that Jesus would later be called the Lion of Judah. And Herod’s throne is set right in front of the lion’s mouth, as if it was about to be devoured.

We hear a reference to Ecclesiastes 4:12 during a betrothal ceremony, with the audience being told that a threefold cord is not easily broken. Marriage is referred to as a step of faith. Someone is told, “King or peasant, one day we will all bend the knee” to this new King. Antipater confesses that he once worshiped his father like a god. We see Jewish symbols and rites. Marriage is called a “divine institution.”

Sexual Content

A critical aspect of the movie—as was the case with the real Nativity story—is the suspicion that Mary had sex with someone other than her betrothed. That would’ve been a huge issue back in the day, and Journey to Bethlehem brings that aspect of the story home.

Mary’s father feels that the family has been shamed. Joseph’s parents forbid him from having anything to do with his fiancée. And Joseph himself—at least the part of him who’s skeptical of Mary’s incredible story—feels betrayed by Mary as well.

But Journey to Bethlehem also speculates what the early romance between Mary and Joseph might’ve looked like.

Mary is not thrilled with her arranged marriage to a man she’s never even seen. But when she meets a young flirt at the market, she makes it clear that she’s not available (though she’s also both flattered and perhaps a wee bit attracted to the guy). The man—even when he knows that she’s betrothed—continues to flirt, and he even buys her a fig. “It will be my gift to a beautiful bride.” Mary ultimately stuffs the fig in his face.

[ Spoiler Warning ] Turns out that the guy is also betrothed. In fact, the flirt is Joseph —which brings us to a curious ethical conundrum worthy of a 1950s romantic musical. When Mary discovers that Joseph and the flirt in the marketplace were one and the same, she’s pretty furious. Joseph was taken, too—and yet he flirted with a female stranger when he knew that he was unavailable. That’s practically cheating on her! But Joseph points out that he was flirting with his future wife, so no harm done, right?

And that sets the tone for the relationship we see throughout the film. Joseph seems deeply and madly in love with Mary (whom he officially marries in part to throw Roman investigators off their trail). Mary largely treats her engagement and marriage to Joseph as a duty until the very end. Even when they officially marry (with the mute Zechariah presiding), Mary turns her face from Joseph so he plants the traditional kiss on her cheek. But as she sees what a dutiful, conscientious protector Joseph is, Mary’s heart warms. And the film ends with the two kissing gently on the lips.

Herod leers at a couple of female servants as he walks (and sings) through a palace hall. As part of an unexpectedly warm (but heterosexual) greeting, a man kisses another on both cheeks.

Violent Content

When Joseph first learns of Mary’s pregnancy, he’s of two minds about that matter. That inner conflict plays out in an imaginative battle (set to music) between two versions of Joseph. They punch and kick during the musical battle.

A protective donkey knocks a couple of people down. We hear capital punishments ordered. An angel hits his head on a too-short doorway. We hear how Mary’s pregnancy puts her as risk for stoning.

As you likely know, Herod will do anything he can to snuff out this rival king. He sends his son, Antipater, to track down the mother. And when that looks like a dead end, he commands Antipater, “Take your men to Bethlehem and kill every pregnant woman and baby you find. Problem solved.”

Antipater suggests instead that Herod acquiesce to having a census taken in his realm, as Caesar Augustus asked him to do. The census, he tells Herod, “allows soldiers to search every home and count every head.” (Those who know the story know that Herod did make good on his bloody threat after Joseph, Mary and Jesus were safely on their way to Egypt.)

Crude or Profane Language

None, but the film does include a joking feint toward the word “a–.”

Drug and Alcohol Content

Herod enjoys his wine. We see him drinking it—and we may see the effects of him drinking too much of it.

Herod also has some pretty bad dreams and suffers from insomnia. Melchior suggests that myrrh is a wonderful cure for sleeplessness. Gaspar, meanwhile, positions frankincense as cutting-edge aromatherapy.

Other Negative Elements

After the wise men come near the end of their long journey, Melchior frets that he’s in no condition to see Jesus. “My clothes smell of sheep dung,” he says. “My skin smells of sheep dung. This whole Earth smells of sheep dung. But tonight, I meet the Son of God. This is just perfect.” (He later apologizes to someone for his smell. “I have a few hygiene issues right now,” he explains.)

Melchior also loves to eat—a trait the film plays as comedy, but it might remind some of the sin of gluttony.

What’s the reason for the season? Jesus , of course. Every priest, pastor and faithful Christian will tell you that. And, of course, the focus should be on the Son of God, right? In the Bible, everyone wants to see the Christ child—even those who mean Him harm. In Nativity displays, all eyes are on the manger. Think a newborn baby snags the spotlight during family reunions? Imagine a newborn who’ll save the universe.

But in stories about the Nativity, our focus is pulled elsewhere, and understandably so. Because Jesus doesn’t have a lot of lines in this stage of His life, our attention is drawn to those parents. We wonder what they must’ve thought about that stable-based miracle. And maybe we wonder what their lives were like, before and after.

In Nativity scenes and classic paintings, Mary and Joseph look so serene, so peaceful. And yet, given the chaos and danger around them, they were likely anything but.

During Easter, we witness Jesus’ divinity—the soul-saving power of His sacrifice and resurrection. But during Christmas, we’re given an opportunity to think about His humanity—because we meet His human parents.

Journey to Bethlehem is one of the most unusual Nativity stories you’ll see. Mary sings about arranged marriages. Roman soldiers dance. Herod (played by Antonio Banderas) glowers and leers, and, let’s be honest, hams it up, too. Journey to Bethlehem is the Nativity story crossed with High School Musical . And for some, this fanciful telling will be just too fanciful to embrace. Anyone who thinks The Chosen went too far in its extra-biblical imaginings … well, just wait ‘til you see a Broadway-style dance number in an ancient Judean marketplace.

But for me, it works, and I’ll tell you why.

As it opens the first chapter on what the movie itself calls “the greatest story ever told,” Journey to Bethlehem allows its camera to linger on two youngsters who had big dreams of their own. Mary, a lover of Scripture, wanted to be a teacher. Joseph wistfully wishes he could invent stuff. The two are thrown together and given not a single say in the matter. Their reactions aren’t that far removed from what ours might be: anger, confusion, exasperation, even a little bit of heartbreak. Mary moans about this drastic turn in her life. “Is this what I’m chosen for?” She sings. “I thought I was meant for more.”

And, of course, she was. God had far bigger plans for her than she could possibly have imagined.

As I said at the outset, the Nativity has always been a love story—the love of a Creator for His creation. But Journey to Bethlehem reminds us that there’s another love in play: the love of a man for a woman, of (eventually) a woman for a man. And then there’s the love they both have for their very special, very human, very divine Son.

We can never fully understand God’s love for us—its depth and breadth and staggering power. But the love found in a family? Yeah, we can grasp that. And through the Nativity’s very human avatars—even those that sing and dance—we get just a hint of God’s love for us.

This time, he’s delivering a curation of mind-blowing performances and conversations in the new film The Journey: A Music Special from Andrea Bocelli , which is set to premiere starting April 2, Palm Sunday, through Easter Sunday on April 9.

Naturally, after the preview for the movie, which included this moving duet of "Hallelujah” with Tori Kelly, first made waves around the internet in March, fans are eager to find out how they can watch the film. Luckily, we have just what you’re looking for.

How can I watch The Journey?

It’s been nearly three years since the legendary singer graced his fans and the world with a 25-minute live performance on Easter Sunday , and now another performance will be available in theaters for a limited time, from Palm Sunday through Easter. Supporters can decide whether they would like to purchase individual or group tickets (which are for parties of 25 or more) by following the link on the film’s website.

How much do tickets cost?

Ticket prices for most locations start at around $12 per person. However, due to the limited number of show dates and show times, we recommend snagging them as soon as possible before they sell out.

Can I stream The Journey?

It is not yet clear if the film will be available on streaming services anytime soon, but Bocelli has released recorded performances onto YouTube in the past, so fingers crossed!

Theater Dates Added for "The Journey" Before it Even Releases

Updated: Apr 10, 2023

Christian broadcaster TBN teams up with famed tenor Andrea Bocelli for this musical journey through his native Italy.

Andrea Boccelli appears in a scene from "The Journey."

The thought of a trip through the stunning countryside of Italy on horseback sounds like a fantastic journey even before you throw in show-stopping music from top tenor Andrea Bocelli and an impressive cast of contemporary Christian musicians. That is what moviegoers can expect from The Journey: A Music Special from Andrea Bocelli when it hits the big screen this weekend.

The movie poster for "The Journey: A Music Special from Andrea Boccelli."

The project comes from Trinity Broadcasting Network, which has previously worked with the Italian maestro on Christmas specials that aired on the channel itself. This film, however, is a considerably more ambitious production and will feature the singer riding along Italy's famous Via Francigena and stopping in towns, cathedrals and even an ancient Roman amphitheater for musical performances.

He will be joined along the way by Christian singers like Michael W. Smith, Tori Kelly, Tauren Wells, and Taya - all of whom perform and also interact with him about profound subjects like life, faith and family. The head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, makes an appearance in the film as well to convey a special blessing.

Originally scheduled as a four-day engagement in theaters, strong advanced ticket sales have extended that to eight days, meaning The Journey: A Music Special from Andrea Bocelli will run from Sunday, April 2nd through April 9th , which of course is Easter Sunday. You can check out the trailer below and purchase tickets to a theater in your area via this link to the website of distributor Fathom Events.

The 20 Best Christian Movies of 2023

There's a lot of trash coming out of the movie industry. But as 2023 proved, a lot of light is coming out of it, too.

In fact, 2023 may have been the best year in the past two decades for excellent faith-based content, thanks to new companies such as Angel Studios and Great American Pure Flix and veteran companies like Affirm Films and Kingdom Story.

This year featured a summer blockbuster and multiple Top 5 box office hits. It also included several streaming movies that may have gone under the radar but deserve your consideration nonetheless.

Here are the 20 best Christian movies of 2023:

1. After Death

Stories of near-death experiences are examined in this fascinating documentary, which includes interviews with scientists, researchers, and individuals who say they briefly visited heaven before returning to this life. One of those is Don Piper, a minister who was involved in a car crash in 1989 and says he remembers leaving this world. A film from Angel Studios, After Death, opened in the Top 5. Rated PG-13 for thematic material, including violent descriptions, some bloody images, and drug references.

2. Birthright Outlaw

3. big george foreman .

A broke, washed-up boxer gets back in the ring in order to raise money for his ministry and youth center. Incredibly, he also overcomes all odds to win the heavyweight title. The film   is the story of boxer and minister George Foreman, who won the heavyweight title in 1973 before retiring and staging a comeback to win it again in 1994. A near-death experience in 1977 played a key role in his decision to preach the gospel. It's one of the best sports movies you'll ever watch. Rated PG-13 for some sports violence.

4. The Blind

The Blind movie scene

A couple falls in love and gets married at a young age, only to separate due to his alcoholic, angry ways. The film   is the backstory to the life of Phil and Kay Robertson (Duck Dynasty), who only reconciled after Phil became a Christian. It's gritty and redemptive, and it includes a message from Phil Robertson himself at the end. Andrew Hyatt, who directed Paul, Apostle of Christ (2018), also directed The Blind. Rated PG-13 for thematic content and smoking. It also includes some coarse language. Because of dark themes, this one isn't for small children.

5. Camp Hideout

A troubled teenager finds redemption at a Christian summer camp. He also outwits a few career criminals who chase him to that same camp, searching for an electronic device they think he stole. This hilarious and inspiring movie   features the physical comedy of Home Alone and the quirky plot of Ernest Goes to Camp. It also stars someone you've seen: Christopher Lloyd, the Emmy-winning actor best known for playing "Doc" in the Back to the Future trilogy. He portrays a quirky camp leader. Rated PG for slapstick violence and thematic elements.

6. Divine Influencer

A social media influencer loses everything only to discover her true purpose while volunteering at a homeless shelter. Lara Silva, known for her portrayal of Eden in the Bible-based series The Chosen, plays the lead character, Olivia. Shari Rigby (Overcomer) directed it. The film, Rigby told Crosswalk, will urge viewers to consider: How can we use social media to do things better? "First, by loving God. Second, by loving others," she said. It's available on Great American Pure Flix.

7. Heaven Sent

8. the hill .

The Hill, Things to know about The Hill

A young boy born with a degenerative spinal disease overcomes long odds to become a professional baseball player. The movie tells the true story of Rickey Hill, who developed an uncanny ability to hit a baseball by practicing with a rock and stick. He also faced opposition at home from his father, a Baptist minister. It stars Dennis Quaid (Blue Miracle, I Can Only Imagine) and Colin Ford (Walker, A Thousand Tomorrows) and was co-written by Angelo Pizzo, who is best known for writing Rudy (1993) and Hoosiers (1986). Rated PG for thematic content, language and smoking throughout.

9. His Only Son

The Old Testament patriarch Abraham goes on a long journey in order to obey God and sacrifice his son, Isaac. The film opened at No. 3 and received a CinemaScore grade of "A" from moviegoers. It was written and directed by David Helling, who was serving as a Marine in Iraq more than a decade ago when he says God "got a hold of my heart" and led him into filmmaking. "I wanted to do everything I could to bring others to the Word," Helling told Crosswalk. Rated PG-13 for thematic content and some violence.

10. Identity Crisis

A college student struggling with self-esteem clones herself, only to learn she already has the skills needed to succeed in life. This whimsical comedy was produced by the same company, The Boylan Sisters, that previously released Switched (2020). Shari Rigby (Overcomer) directed it. The film stars identical twin actresses, Scout Tayui-Lepore and Sophia Tayui-Lepore. Producer Alexandra Boylan told Crosswalk: "We want to make hip and fun films that girls … want to go to school and can't wait to tell their friends about it."

11. Jesus Revolution

A straight-laced minister welcomes long-haired hippie Christians into his church, sparking a nationwide revival. The movie tells the true story of Chuck Smith, a California pastor who embraced hippie evangelist Lonnie Frisbee and other young believers in the late 60s and early 70s. It outraged some of his more traditional members, but it also birthed the so-called "Jesus Movement." Jesus Revolution grossed $52 million domestically and earned an "A+" CinemaScore from moviegoers. Rated PG-13 for strong drug content involving teens and some thematic elements.

Jesus Revolution, Jesus Revolution is having an effect on even none Christians

12. Journey to Bethlehem

13. left behind: rise of the antichrist .

A television reporter tries to uncover the truth about a worldwide mystery: the recent vanishing of millions of people. The film   is a sequel to the 2014 film Left Behind, which was based on the bestselling novels and imagines what the world will be like in the days surrounding the return of Jesus and the Rapture. (Those novels, in turn, were based on a pretribulation, premillennial interpretation of the Bible's passages about the Last Days.) Rise of the Antichrist is the best Left Behind movie yet.

14. Nefarious

A convicted serial killer undergoes a psychiatric evaluation prior to his execution and claims he is a demon. He also predicts the psychiatrist will commit three murders. No doubt, this R-rated thriller isn't your typical Christian movie, but its strong faith-centric themes -- the reality of evil and the supernatural realm -- warrant its placement on this list. Co-directors Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon also co-directed Unplanned (2019). This movie is thought-provoking, but it's not for children. Rated R for some disturbing violent content.

15. The Shift

The Shift movie review

A man gets separated from his wife in the middle of a dystopian multiverse and must fight to find her again. The movie   broke new ground in the faith-based realm for its science-fiction plot, even as it has a strong biblical framework: It's a modern retelling of the biblical book of Job. It starred Neal McDonough, Kristoffer Polaha, Elizabeth Tabish, and Sean Astin. It stayed in the Top 10 its first three weekends and was released by Angel Studios. Rated PG-13 for violence and thematic elements.

16. Sound of Freedom

A federal agent quits his job to travel overseas and catch child sex traffickers. The movie   was inspired by true events and follows a man named Tim, who rescues a young boy from sex trafficking only to learn the boy's sister is still in captivity. Unable to just "let it go" -- as his friends suggest -- Tim goes on a quest to catch the criminal. This Angel Studios movie was a surprise hit and was directed by Alejandro Monteverde, who previously helmed Bella (2006) and Little Boy (2015). Rated PG-13 for thematic content involving sex trafficking, violence, language, sexual references, some drug references, and smoking throughout.

17. Southern Gospel

18. sun moon .

A young woman seeks solace overseas after being left at the altar. While there, she discovers God's purpose for her life. This charming film tells the story of a young woman named Kelsey (Mackenzie Mauzy), who moves to Taiwan to teach English at a Christian school and learns a lesson straight from Romans 8:28 : God works all things together for good. It debuted on Great American Pure Flix.

19. Surprised by Oxford

A young agnostic woman faces a clash of worldviews when she befriends people who believe in God. The film   is based on a nonfiction book of the same name and tells the story of a postgraduate student, Caro, who enrolls at the University of Oxford in pursuit of knowledge but is shocked to learn some students are in pursuit of faith. The film's inspiration was the book's author, Carolyn Weber, who currently serves as a professor at New College Franklin in Franklin, Tenn. Although not rated, it likely would have garnered a PG-13 for language and a discussion about sex.

20. On a Wing and a Prayer

A middle-aged man must learn to fly an airplane after the pilot dies in the middle of the flight. That may sound like a far-fetched plot, but it's based on the true story of Doug White, who was traveling with his family back from a funeral in 2009 when the pilot suffered a heart attack. Although Doug didn't know it at the time, experts on the ground gave him only a 5 percent chance of survival. Dennis Quaid stars in the lead role. Roma Downey is a producer. Her company, Lightworkers, helped make it. The movie   debuted on Prime Video. Rated PG for peril, some language, suggestive references and thematic elements.

Michael Foust has covered the intersection of faith and news for 20 years. His stories have appeared in Baptist Press,  Christianity Today , The Christian Po st , the   Leaf-Chronicle ,  the Toronto Star and   the Knoxville News-Sentinel .

'Journey to Bethlehem': Lecrae, For King & Country's Joel Smallbone Star in Nativity Musical

Journey to Bethlehem

Grammy Award-winning Christian artists Joel Smallbone and Lecrae will star in a live-action Christmas musical that tells the story of Mary and Joseph and the birth of Jesus.

‘Full of Joy, Hope and Truth’: Christian Critics Praise New ‘Journey to Bethlehem’ Film

“’Journey to Bethlehem’ is a fun, entertaining, hope filled musical based on the birth of Jesus, that captures the essence and truth of Christmas,” wrote The Christian Film Review . “This is a must-see film and is not to be missed. Full of joy, hope and truth, it has to be one of the best and most epic Christmas movies of all time.”

Directed by Grammy-nominated Adam Anders, the film stars rapper Lecrae as the angel Gabriel, Milo Manheim as Joseph, Fiona Palomo as Mary, Academy Award nominee Antonio Banderas as King Herod, and Joel Smallbone as Herod’s son, Antipater . And it’s clear that both the mainstream and Christian cast and crew members had a respect for the story they were telling on screen.

“’Journey to Bethlehem’ is, as you might expect, an inherently spiritual story. And even though this version of the Nativity is filled with songs and dances and jokes, director Adam Anders and his cohorts tried to honor the story’s holy message,” wrote Focus on the Family’s Plugged In . “And through the Nativity’s very human avatars—even those that sing and dance—we get just a hint of God’s love for us.”

“Although this is a musical version of the Nativity Story, the filmmakers treat the birth of Jesus with the proper reverence it deserves,” agreed Movieguide .

Anders spent the last 17 years working on the film and recently noted that it’s been one of the most spiritually rewarding and challenging projects he’s ever created. Not only did he have to spend a significant amount of time away from his family while filming, but he felt actual spiritual opposition to the work he was creating.

“My faith has been really challenged, and I think strengthened through this,” Anders revealed. “I mean, we'll say it's been probably the hardest year of our lives when making this movie, but also the most gratifying. Every day, I had to start on my knees just to get through each day."

“It's been crazy, but we’re here,” he added. “God is good … we're excited to see what He is going to do with this movie.”

“Journey to Bethlehem," a Sony AFFIRM film, is in theaters now and is sure to serve as a joyful addition to all of your Great American Pure Flix Christmas streaming this holiday season!

Immaculate

In the realm of religious horror, one filled with tales of divine terror, Immaculate emerges as the latest contender. Yet despite its promising setup within the shadowy confines of an Italian nunnery and a cast led by Sydney Sweeney , the film struggles to carve out a niche for itself. Directed by Michael Mohan and written by Andrew Lobel, the movie treads familiar ground, recycling familiar elements without delivering the novel twists, deeper insights or genuine horror in a genre that thrives on the exploration of faith’s darker dimensions.

Immaculate ’s film score evokes a sense of eerie dread, a bright spot in its atmospheric setting. However, the film’s auditory experience is distracted by overemphasis on volume, particularly in service of its jump-scares. This heavy-handed approach to sound design, while initially effective one or twice, diminishes the suspense and leans into predictability, overshadowing the subtle intricacies of the score.

The biggest flaw lies within the film’s narrative structure and character development, particularly in how Sister Cecilia interacts with the unfolding horror. Despite being surrounded by ominous signs and eerie apparitions, not to mention a miraculous pregnancy, Cecilia’s responses often border on apathetic, lacking the depth or complexity one might expect in such dire circumstances until it’s too late. This portrayal strips her character of relatability and intelligence, painting her instead as naively detached. It’s difficult to remain invested in a story where the protagonist’s reactions are unconvincing or inconsistent with the gravity of their situation.

Porcaroli’s portrayal of Sister Gwen in the film emerges as a beacon of grounded reality; her performance stands out for her pragmatic outlook amid the film’s overarching ambiguity. Sweeney’s role as Sister Cecilia showcases her acting talents beyond her physical allure. Sweeney, taking the reins as both lead actress and producer, crafts a space for herself to explore a diverse array of characters, affirming her dedication to broadening her artistic range. Sweeney’s proactive approach in shaping her career trajectory illustrates her capability and ambition in Hollywood’s competitive landscape.

The visual composition of the movie stands as one of its best features, thanks to the cinematography of Elisha Christian. The film benefits immensely from his use of texture, capturing the nunnery’s somber atmosphere through a palette of grays and shadows that layer the setting with a tangible sense of isolation. This not only enhances the movie’s aesthetic but also contributes to its ambiance. Christian’s ability to navigate the interplay between light and darkness adds depth to each scene, crafting a visually immersive experience beyond the film’s shortcomings.

Missed opportunities aside, the film’s conclusion stands out as a redeeming feature. In a genre where endings can often feel predictable, especially in stories involving religious themes and the innocence of children, Immaculate takes a leap in the final scene, veering away from convention to offer an unexpected twist. This bold departure provides satisfying closure by finally subverting traditional expectations and concluding on an unconventional note.

Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain

  • See Retailers

Rotten Tomatoes® Score

A one-note comedy that’s sloppily written, poorly acted, and lacks any semblance of an inspired comedic spark.

As is typical for an SNL-spawned movie, Treasure meanders. Unusually though, the ratio of jokes to running time remains favorable, even if some of the surprise cameos fail to amaze.

Their group dynamic needs to figure out how to better distinguish their personas, but they’re also generous in sharing the screen. The funniest role they’ve written here goes to Meg Stalter as a deluded park ranger.

Unfortunately, Please Don't Destroy's first feature-length film offers a painfully predictable story and fails to elicit almost any laughs.

Maybe this film is destined to be a cult classic, or maybe it will be relegated to more streaming platform filler.

There are some laugh-out-loud moments you won’t be able to resist, but it just gets sloppy in the end

[Please Don't Destroy: The Legend of Foggy Mountain] is awkward, ridiculous fun from some fresh voices, and the best SNL-produced comedy to come along in decades.

I mostly found myself giggling through the movie, and I think that’s as much as the creators could hope for from someone who enjoys Please Don’t Destroy in small doses on SNL but isn’t sure their sensibilities translate into a feature film.

...an entertaining-enough debut for a trio of exceedingly promising comedy stars.

If anything, it feels apt to refer to The Treasure of Foggy Mountain as their “not ready for primetime” attempt to deliver a feature capitalizing off their chemistry and sense of humor.

‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire' Cast's Journey Down Memory Lane With OG Stars – World Premiere

“This is one of the comedies that changed the way people look at comedies,” beamed Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire star Patton Oswalt about the comedy franchise.

As such it was a pinch-yourself moment for many of the stars as they got to soak up the stories from Ghostbusters OG cast Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson onset. For Oswalt, he was “blown away” when he walked on the recreated fire house set from the original movies.

“I saw this movie when I was 13, and it melted my mind,” exclaimed Oswalt, “I’m about to see myself in a Ghostbusters movie tonight, it’s hard to wrap my head around it.”

Paul Rudd, who starred in 2021’s Ghostbusters : Afterlife , regales, “One of things that was fun about this was that didn’t take our phones. We all sat together in between set-ups, which doesn’t happen that often. And one time Dan Akyroyd was sitting there; Pat, was there, Kimal was there: How did you meet (John) Belushi? How did The Blues Brothers come about? Just really spending a good hour talking about SNL when it started, and his friendship with John Candy when they were kids. To get a front row seat to this comedic history.”

Hudson’s fave moments from the original 1984 movie was shooting the scene in the New York City mayor’s office when Murray’s Dr. Peter Venkman and Akyroyd’s Dr. Ray Stanz speak to truth to power to the official about the apocalypse descending on the Big Apple (Venkman hysterically emphasized, “Cats and dogs, living together — mass hysteria!”

There’s was also a chilly moment for Hudson when he was covered in slime on a freezing cold day of production in the NYC subway.

Meanwhile, does Ghostbusters: After Life and Frozen Empire star Carrie Coon believe in ghosts?

“We know what we don’t know,” she says, “I’m still waiting for a visitation.”

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire from Sony opens on March 22.

‘Arthur the King’ Review: Mark Wahlberg and a Very Good Dog Make For a Winning Combination in This Feelgood Drama

An athlete discovers the power of the dog when he befriends a battered canine during a last-chance race for survival in this heart-swelling true story.

Mark Wahlberg as Michael in Arthur The King. Photo Credit: Carlos Rodriguez

Michael Light ( Mark Wahlberg ) is his own worst enemy. He’s a man haunted by past failings — specifically his loss three years prior at the Adventure Racing World Championship in Costa Rica that left his team and their warring egos stranded in thick mud. His former teammate Helen (Juliet Rylance), now his wife, has given up that life to be a full-time mom to their cute-as-a-button young daughter Ruby (Cece Valentina). But Michael is like a dog with a bone, not wanting to let go of his dream of being a world champion. And since his obsession hasn’t waned, she encourages him to give it another go.

Michael experiences an uphill battle garnering sponsorship and assembling his team of avengers. His stalwart navigator Chik (Ali Suliman) has a bad knee. His new recruit, rock climbing expert Olivia (Nathalie Emmanuel), is accepting the position primarily to make her father happy. And Michael must put aside his grudge match against narcissist teammate Leo ( Simu Liu ), whose social media following is the key to getting corporate endorsement. As the team finally shapes up in time for the competition — a five-to-ten-day, 435-mile course across treacherous terrain — in Santo Domingo, a mangy, street-savvy dog (played by canine actor Ukai) treks hundreds of miles through the jungle only to meet up with Michael at a scheduled pit stop. With their destinies now intertwined, and the name Arthur bestowed on our intrepid four-legged hero, the pair must trust in each other’s tenacity and intuition to survive.

Cellan Jones and company give dramatic weight to the big action set pieces. And with good reason, as they are the propulsive element in a story focused not only on athleticism and competition, but also surmounting one’s own personal expectations. They capture humans’ fearless persistence and nature’s dangerous beauty in equal measure, whether the competitors are dangling from a zip-line (Gary Roach’s editing makes this visceral sequence’s stress level on par with the opening of “Cliffhanger”), scaling great heights or hiking rain-drenched jungles. Hand-held shots emphasize the intimacy and immediacy of scenes when team members’ tempers are fiery and frayed.

Some obstacles the film fails to surmount, with its female characterization lackluster at best. Emmanuel and Rylance make the most of their limited material, but they’re not miracle workers. While their male counterparts all experience different degrees of redemption, the women are there exclusively to serve those arcs. Olivia continually frets about her father’s terminal illness, which is later mansplained to the audience by Michael during his tender talk with her. Helen is essentially relegated to the thankless, tertiary role of Wife Who Waits At Home. Her greatest value is sporting athleisure wear and staring at a computer monitor so we can get a sense of the media’s involvement in sensationalizing Michael and Arthur’s unlikely friendship.

If indelible Movie Moments are in short supply, inevitably making Wahlberg and Ukai’s chemistry the true highlight, the film’s sentiments on selflessness nonetheless stand out. They’re a ringing testament to the powerful bond between man and dog, and a kind-hearted reminder that canine companionship can be a lifeline in troubled times.
