6 Scenic Train Rides To Take In Tennessee

Trains and Tennessee go together like biscuits and jam.

train excursions chattanooga tn

Trains and Tennessee go together like biscuits and jam. The Volunteer State’s history with railways dates back to 1845 when the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad became the state’s first railroad. During those days, trains were used for just about everything—from the transport of goods to the transport of people. Today, we don’t depend on railways quite as much as we once did, but our nostalgia for the familiar blow of the whistle or plume of steam dissipating into the sky has only grown stronger with each passing year.

If you catch yourself daydreaming about watching the beautiful countryside blur by while you’ve got your head pressed against the window and not a worry in the world, then it may be time for a Tennessee train trip . So whether you want to take an hour-long scenic ride to clear your head, or if you’ve always dreamt about an interactive murder mystery train, Tennessee has got you covered. All that’s left to do is hop aboard because the train’s leaving the station!

Tennessee Valley Railroad

This museum and operating railway in Chattanooga offers rides for every type of train enthusiast. If you don’t have a lot of time, opt for the historic Missionary Ridge Local ride, which takes riders on a 6-mile, 55-minute journey over four bridges along the former Southern Railway tracks. If you have more time, the famous Hiwassee Loop offers breathtaking views of countryside and the Hiwassee River gorge on a 5-hour journey departing from Delano, Tennessee. With an additional 3 hours, you can take the same route and add a ride through Turtletown, Ducktown, and Cooperhill. For special occasions, the Tennessee Valley Railroad also operates a Valentine’s Day ride with dinner and a special Tea Room ride.

Tennessee Wine Train

To score all the honey points with your sweetheart, book a romantic ride for two on the Tennessee Wine Train. The one-of-a-kind wine and dine experience takes guests on a 2-hour journey around Chattanooga, while they enjoy a three-course meal in a 1924 dining car. There really is nothing better than dinner with a view and on the Tennessee Wine Train, there’s no shortage of delicious food, excellent wine, or lovely views.

Lookout Mountain Incline Railway

This isn’t a train ride in the traditional sense, but the one-mile single track system that takes you straight up the side of Lookout Mountain is a rite of passage for all who visit Chattanooga. The first incline here ran in 1887, and in the 1950s both Teddy Roosevelt and Elizabeth Taylor rode the same tracks. With two new cars installed in 2020, this iconic Tennessee treasure is looking forward to another 100 years in operation.

Tennessee Central Railway Museum

 Tennessee Central Railway Museum

This nonprofit in Nashville works hard to preserve historic railroad equipment and educate the public about railroad history. The best—and arguably most fun—way to support them is by booking a seat on a vintage stainless steel passenger car for one of their many excursions now boarding in Nashville. Trips range from 3 to 7.5 hours and carry themes from a Mardi Gras Excursion to a Valentines Moonshine Trip and Fall Foliage Trip. Once November rolls around, you’ll want to snag your North Pole Express fast before they sell out.

Dollywood Express

Everything is better when the Queen of Country—Nashville’s Iron Butterfly—gets involved, so a ride on the Dollywood Express is a must. If you’ve already planned a trip to Dollywood, don’t skip out on the train ride. Climb aboard the authentic 110-ton coal-fired steam engine and get ready for an unforgettable ride. The 20-minute mountain excursion takes riders on a 5-mile ride through the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains.

Three Rivers Rambler

Courtesy of Three Rivers Rambler Train

It’s not just Chattanooga that gets in on the Tennessee railway tradition. Three Rivers Rambler has been operating train rides in the heart of downtown Knoxville since 2000. The ride takes folks along the Tennessee River passing by historical sites to the Three Rivers Trestle, where the French Broad and Holston Rivers join to form the Tennessee River. Other scenes to look out for are the beautiful farmland all around and Knoxville’s first settlement area.

  • Crakar1 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Chattanooga trolley tour Well, kudos to the tour driver. He was a little under the weather, but was very informative. However, I don’t know if it was because of his cold or he just normally talks really fast. Also, the car museum and sculpture stops were something just to kill time. Not overly interesting. Didn’t think the tour was worth 80+ dollars. Read more Written November 17, 2023

  • bazbaz65 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Maria is a great tour guide! We actually wanted to do the "Flash" tour as we were tired from some of the hiking we'd been doing, but that one is only offered at certain times/days. So, we went with the Walking Tour - no regrets! Maria met us at the Information Center near the Aquarium and led us through the city of Chattanooga for a lengthy, in-depth tour. She was very knowledgeable (as well as being pleasant) and easy to understand (not a low speaker, etc.). We had already walked a couple of the streets she took us down but now it was nice to hear the history of some of the buildings; she told some really great stories that makes me feel like I should pick up a history book and learn more! I would suggest that you do this tour as early in your vacation as possible - after seeing some of the areas she showed us, we have to go back now to explore! Thanks Maria for a great tour! The guide was very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome with his greetings and cold water. The info on the tour was very interesting and the stop at the Coker museum was great as well. I do think the tour could be just a tad bit shorter time wise, but otherwise a great activity if it is your first time in Chattanooga. We scheduled some our activities from what we saw on the tour. • KentLReviews 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles A very good tour, if not too much information The good things include the very friendly driver/tour guide, Craig. There was a lot of information and it was interestingly presented. They provided removable seat cushions to try to minimize wooden bench seats’ hardness. That was one of the negatives (the hardwood benches). After the first hour, they became very uncomfortable. The trolley was not cooled down when we got on, and the A/C took awhile to cool things off to a reasonable level. The volume of information was so large that the guide had to talk very fast, and non-stop. Several times it was hard to understand him. A better editing job needs to be done. All in all though, I would recommend the tour. Read more Written August 19, 2023

More Information

Passengers seem to step back in time when they ride restored vintage trains alongside the Hiwassee Scenic River, into the Hiwassee River Gorge, and over the famous Hiwassee Rail Loop. The trains run from April-November with a choice of a half-day round trip from Etowah to the Hiwassee Rail Loop or a day-long excursion from Etowah to Copperhill, with a layover for lunch and shopping which is the Copperhill Special. These are exciting train rides that appeal to both nature lovers and rail buffs.

Twenty miles of the railroad corridor is listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to the historical significance of the rail line and the fact that the corridor has retained so much of the original “look” that it had when the line was built in 1890. Because nearly 30 miles of the line runs through the Cherokee National Forest and into the remote Hiwassee River Gorge, Hiwassee River Rail Adventure also attracts people who like viewing scenery and wildlife.

Take a trip back in time to a slower-paced era when railroad travel was a way of life. Relive the romance of the rails when vintage trains provided an escape from the everyday routine. The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum provides an interactive, historical experience that adds an extra dimension to your visit to Chattanooga’s popular attractions. Here you will find the only regularly scheduled, full-sized train ride in Tennessee. The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum is so much more than entertainment… It is your chance to experience the sights and sounds of yesteryear!

TVRM’s passenger trains run on the historic route, which includes Missionary Ridge Tunnel, completed in 1858 and on the National Register of Historic Places.  The tunnel is the primary reason TVRM runs on the 3-mile section of the former Southern Railway. As railroad equipment grew too large to pass through and the single-track tunnel became a traffic jam for an otherwise double-track railroad, Southern Railway abandoned the 3-mile portion of the line and built a new section around the end of Missionary Ridge, avoiding the tunnel altogether.

Today, TVRM preserves railroad equipment not only to preserve machines but to preserve an experience as well. In providing this historical experience, TVRM hopes to educate our visitors about the importance of this industry and how it helped create the modern world in which we live.

HIWASSEE LOOP

Enjoy a 50-mile round trip up the beautiful lower Hiwassee River gorge. This 3-1/2 hour trip will take you to the top of the famous “Hiwassee Loop” where the tracks cross over themselves as they corkscrew up the mountain near Farner, Tennessee.

  • Snack items are available for sale on the train including soft drinks, coffee, water, chips, crackers, and candy bars.
  • Souvenirs are sold onboard including t-shirts, caps, and books.
  • Restrooms are located on each train car.
  • Trains consist of enclosed, climate-controlled coaches pulled by a diesel locomotive.

COPPERHILL SPECIAL

A day-long train excursion from Etowah, Tennessee to the historic copper mining town of Copperhill. Trains run alongside the Hiwassee River, into the river gorge, over the famous Hiwassee Rail Loop and on to Copperhill for a mid-day layover for dining and shopping. Choose standard coach seating or reserve a space in one of the luxury dome cars.

  • Passengers of all ages are allowed
  • Snacks and drinks are sold on board
  • Observation dome cars available
  • Family pricing available

HIWASSEE HOLIDAY

The Hiwassee Holiday Train is a round-trip one-hour and 15-minute ride along the beautiful Hiwassee River Gorge. Features of this ride include: writing a letter to Santa, a fresh-baked cookie, and Mrs. Claus’s favorite hot chocolate. Santa will not be on the train — but you will get to see him!

A keepsake boarding pass and holiday bell will be given to every passenger.

  • Souvenir boarding pass will be provided
  • Cookies and hot chocolate are available
  • Train ride lasts around 1.5hrs.

What People Are Saying

This was a very beautiful drive. It had a lot of overlooks and the trees were very beautiful. We also rode over to Joyce Kilmer Forest. This was a very nice hike and was amazing to see all the older trees. I would advise to take a bathroom break before the trip across the mountain.

Incredible drive through the Cherokee National Forest. Lots of hiking, waterfalls and mountain streams. Areas of the skyway are rather curvy, so beware. Some like to speed through this area either in road rally’s or on motorcycle. Have seen several severe accidents. A MUST visit for all the beauty!

Unbelievable beauty

We were surprised at how beautiful this route is. Sadly, our trip was cut short from annual undergrowth burning. We will definitely come back this way.

Gorgeous views

Nice smooth road that’s a lot of fun with beautiful sights. There’s plenty of pull offs for photos and small hikes and it makes a really nice scenic drive.

Awesome road and view

We were in town to view the fall foliage. We hit it just right. This drive is magnificent. Several viewing sights along the way. Take advantage of all if possible.

Customer Reviews:

Hubs and I did the Missionary Ridge Train ride during a quick stop in Chattanooga for the holidays. The train was more for him than me, but we both had a phenomenal time! Not only are all the employees helpful and kind, they experience is incredibly informative and interesting. I suggest if there are only 2 people in your party to ride in the cab of the train. We rode with the engineer who drives and it took our experience to the next level. Joe the engineer told us a plethora of extra info about the trim, TVRM, and you get to ride in the lead train car while it turns around at the turn around spot. So cool! Also, check out the exhibit they have in the depot area. Loads of info and cool things to check out!   Emily N - Google Review
A great stop for train enthusiasts. Nicely restored locomotives and passenger cars. The missionary ridge train ride is pleasant and informative.   Susan M - Google Review
We took the Missionary Risge train ride today and loved it. The entire way to East Ridge the conductor gives a narrated tour of the history of the trains we are on as well as the area. This is followed by a narrated demonstration of the turn table which rotates the train for the ride back. It was fun, informative, and scenic. Will be recommending to friends and family when they visit.   Pat O - Google Review

5 Unique Train Rides In Tennessee

train excursions chattanooga tn

  • Destinations
  • Types of Travel
  • United States

Tennessee’s relationship with railways began in the mid-1800s with the extension of an east coast railroad into Chattanooga. During the height of its existence, Tennessee was a major transportation hub, moving raw materials, goods, and people. Even though the need for railways waned about 100 years later, rich history still exists today. And what better way to learn about it than to experience it yourself with a unique train ride.

Ticket for the North Pole Limited at the Tennessee Valley Railroad

1. Tennessee Valley Railroad

In a town known for trains, it’s no wonder Chattanooga is Tennessee’s mecca for unique train rides, and it all starts at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. Founded in 1961 by locals, the museum aims to restore and preserve old steam engines and rail cars. A stroll through the museum is a great introduction to the history of railroads in Tennessee and is the launching point to several enjoyable rides.

Travel along a historic route during the Missionary Ridge Local ride — offered several times per week, depending on the season. The 3-mile ride is named for the historic Missionary Ridge Tunnel, which you will go through along your 6-mile journey. The 55-minute train ride follows the former Southern Railway tracks, over 4 bridges, while guides give a historical overview of the railway. At the halfway point, guests disembark the train to witness the turntable-style turnaround of the train’s engine before heading back to the Grand Junction Station. Guests can also tour a train restoration shop.

Throughout the year, the Tennessee Valley Railroad offers specialty train rides, including Valentine’s Day, Thomas The Train tours, Holiday Lights, Dinner With Santa, and The North Pole Limited. The North Pole excursion is an excellent ride to do with your extended family — especially grandkids — because it’s interactive and fun! Throw on your best holiday pajamas for this colorful adventure to the North Pole. Along the way, marvel at the bright holiday lights outside, while enjoying hot chocolate and tasty gingerbread and chocolate chip cookies. Once you reach the North Pole, head to the window to wave to Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Dessert onboard the Tennessee Wine Train

2. Tennessee Wine Train

Wine and dine on board this traveling museum with the Tennessee Wine Train . A relative newcomer to the train scene, owner John L McCune used his advanced Sommelier expertise to bring an upscale wine event to Chattanooga.

During the 2.5-hour trip, you’ll feast on a 3-course meal with selections like steak, salmon, tomato bisque, and decadent desserts (there is a vegetarian option, upon request). And all of the food is prepared fresh on the train. Each course is paired masterfully with specifically hand-picked wines that are both distinctive and attainable. McCune himself is on hand to tell you about the wine and answer questions, sometimes even sitting down at your table to chat.

Private table in a Pullman car on the Tennessee Wine Train

If intimacy is what you’re looking for, book a table in the private Pullman car, which is famous in its own right having been featured in the 1959 Marilyn Monroe movie Some Like It Hot . For a livelier night, sit in the main dining area — a restored 1924 dining car. Each table can seat up to four guests. After dinner, grab another glass of your favorite wine, turn off your table-top light, and marvel at the sights of downtown Chattanooga before returning to Grand Junction Station.

This unique wine train experience starts at $95 per person and advance reservations are required. Trust me, this excursion does not disappoint. (Note: the wine train is only available for 21+ adults, so this is a romantic date night, not a family event.)

Exterior view of the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway

3. Lookout Mountain Incline Railway

The Lookout Mountain Incline Railway is a one-mile funicular-type track that takes you to the top of Lookout Mountain. Operating since 1895, the incline railway goes just under 10 miles per hour and is mainly single track except in the middle where it switches to two tracks, allowing two cars to run at once. With a grade of nearly 73 percent in parts, the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway is one of the steepest passenger railways in the world .

The incline boards at the bottom of the mountain at the St. Elmo Station. The ride is about 15 minutes each way, but plan to spend more time there for the full experience. At the top, take in the views of Tennessee before grabbing a snack and browsing the gift shop. If you’re up for a short walk, head to historical Point Park , where you’ll learn about the Civil War battles for Chattanooga. There’s a paved path around the 10-acre park, but note that not all of it is wheelchair accessible. Entrance to the park is $10 per adult, but there are exhibits inside the visitors center at the entrance.

Be sure to have your camera ready for the ride down as the views are amazing. Note that the railcar is heated, but not air-conditioned. Price is $15 roundtrip for adults. The railway is wheelchair accessible.

Pro Tip: Chattanooga is in the Eastern Time Zone! So, if you are visiting any nearby areas, they may be in the Central Time Zone (an hour behind Chattanooga). Double check all of your trains’ departure times to ensure you have the correct time zone!

Chattanooga Choo Choo hotel and train

4. Chattanooga Choo Choo

This isn’t a train that you can ride, but it’s still worth checking out. The Chattanooga Choo Choo is an old train depot turned hotel. Inspired by a song made popular by Glen Miller during World War II, the hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Today, you can stay overnight in one of its historic Pullman cars, or opt for a traditional hotel room. There are also restaurants, shops, bars, a comedy club, and a distillery — making it a lively and unique place to visit or stay.

5. Tennessee Central Railway Museum

The Tennessee Central Railway Museum in Nashville offers a variety of unique train excursions, including a murder mystery, Oktoberfest, and a staged train robbery. Stay tuned for my article on those, coming in Spring 2022!

Amy’s passion for traveling and writing started at a young age. She grew up traveling with her family -- visiting three continents by the time she was 16. She’s always looking for her next trip and isn't happy until she has at least one (or two) on the horizon. She is most fulfilled when she’s exploring new areas like a local and finding good deals on travel and activities.

Amy studied broadcast journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She started her career as a TV news producer in Tulsa and Denver, winning 4 Emmy Awards for her work. She’s also worked in production for HGTV and as a spokeswoman for a small Colorado mountain town.

Amy is married with two young kids. Both kids got their passports before age one, as it’s her goal to instill the travel bug in them from a young age. If you can’t find Amy at an airport, you can find her trying out new restaurants, reading, or running.

All aboard! 🚂 We’re going on a train journey today, so buckle in, get cozy, and imagine the rumbling “chugga chugga chugga chugga” of the tracks beneath you.

🧐 Chattanooga + the railroad

It’s no secret that Chattanooga has somewhat of a love affair with trains — from the hit song “Chattanooga Choo Choo” to all the tracks that weave through the city + the outskirts, it’s obvious we have some locomotive history .

During the late 1880s through the early 1900s, Chattanooga was an industrial + passenger railway hub . In fact, it was one of the major connectors to large cities in the South. Because of the strain this put on the city, the Southern Railway Station built a passenger terminal station in 1906. The 24-acre station now holds the Chattanooga Choo Choo hotel , multiple restaurants , retail shops + experiences , Glen Miller Gardens , and much more, like the seasonal ice-skating rink . Even if the hustle and bustle of trains arriving and departing is no longer the draw , this area is still a social hub and popular tourist destination .

Want to dive into the history of the terminal station? Check this out.

Stay on marked trails, take only pictures, pack out your trash, and be considerate of others who share the trails and parks you explore.

Remember that waterfalls and rocky summits can be dangerous. Never try to climb waterfalls or get close to a ledge to get a selfie.

Historical Steam Engine Train Ride!

This train follows a historic route from our Grand Junction depot in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Summerville, Georgia and return. Crossing the state line in Rossville, the train wanders through the outskirts of the Chickamauga & Chattanooga Military Park and then passes through the small Georgia towns of Chickamauga, Rock Spring, LaFayette, Trion, and finally Summerville. Departure for this all day trip is 9:00 A.M. and returns approximately 6:00 P.M. (all times Eastern)

Fall colors are a scenic highlight during the autumn trips, but every train offers optional dining service and a relaxing layover in Summerville to explore town or get lunch. For many, the highlight of the day is listening to one of our steam locomotives pull the train through the Georgia foothills. Come see why the Summerville Steam Special lives up to it’s name!

*The Summerville depot does not have a platform ramp and passengers will not be able to exit the train except by using the stairwells of a train car. Potential passengers should consider this before making their dining or layover plans for Summerville.

  • 20 MPH – TVRM
  • 15 MPH – G&W

Historically, the Central of Georgia timetable shows trains averaging 23 MPH between Chattanooga and Rome, which included station and flag stops. The popular photo location at Rock Spring was once a flag stop for farmers sending poultry, eggs, and produce north to Chattanooga. Some of these goods were then supplied to dining services on trains departing from the Chattanooga Terminal.

The route the train follows is over the former Central of Georgia Railway once it departs the East Chattanooga Belt Railway at 23rd. Street in Chattanooga. The track is owned by Norfolk Southern to Rossville, and then the State of Georgia further south, where it is currently operated by the Genessee & Wyoming as the Chattooga & Chickamauga Railway. TVRM wishes to thank NS, G&W, and the State of Georgia for the cooperation and partnership that make these trips possible.
