It's finally time. my spirit: halloween 2021 store tour.

I am just as excited for Halloween! We always do a family theme for costumes, and we have had two councils on what to be, and we are waiting for some inspiration books (real, but hilariously bizarre superheroes) to come and see if we can settle on a theme. I also made a Halloween wreath I have been dreaming about for years! I made it this last weekend, but I made myself put it away until October. I am happy to prepare now, but I don't want to waste the magic early!

Halloween is my favorite holiday! I can't dress up for work because I'm a lawyer and have to be ready for court. But, I'm very excited to fully display my zombie poker finger I won from you last year! I also have a skeleton cameo pin and a new bat ring and necklace made out of real gemstones (black spinel). So, I'll be a bit understated but stylin'!

A coworker of mine once did a lovely Breakfast at Tiffany's costume for Halloween. She just took off the gloves and put on a jacket when it was time for court. :)

My boss is aghast that I've never seen 'Bettlejuice,' while I'm aghast that she's never seen 'Mary Poppins.' I still think I win that one.

Either your area has fabulous stores or Spirit has really stepped up! I stopped going because they were so lame!

I have two Spirit Halloween stores nearby that both have most of the same displays, so I think they stepped it up a bit!

Several years ago, my teen daughters started Halloweek - 7 days of costumes leading up to the big day! Usually starts with some kind of bounding and gets more complex as the week goes on. Gives them an excuse to wear the costumes from musicals they've been in plus cosplays they've created. They and their friends have now spread Halloweek to their college campuses. Thanks to the profs out there who take costumes in class in stride!

Amazing! I'm missing being in the stores this year. The face tattoos might be amazing for someone who struggles with the makeup but it wouldn't be appropriate for me to try them and I don't know enough about the holiday to speak of the significance of applying the makeup vs cheating with the temp tattoos, or if the markings are like pysanky and have meanings vs being simply a esthetically pleasing.

I have a feeling that there will be a "culture is not a costume" reckoning for the Dia de Muertos stuff in the next few years. Surprised we aren't there yet.

Calavera Catrina was drawn by a mexican artist in the early 1900's to mock people for preferring european traditions over native ones, she was drawn representative of a rich mexican woman (skeletonized) dressed in her european finery, ironically, for her, a "costume" of a different "culture".... People loved the image so much that it was picked up as part of the celebrations, mostly taken from european catholic All Souls, stripped of it's original intent, and painted with native mexican imagery... Cultures change and develop and adopt what they see, nearly everything is culture adopted from another culture

That's a true point about cultures adopting from other cultures and an interesting bit of history, however that doesn't mean that dressing as a catrina for Halloween needs a pass from scrutiny. Japanese geisha makeup has origins in China but I still would not dress as a geisha for Halloween.

There's already been criticisms from the Hispanic community against non-Hispanic people using Dia de Muertos makeup for a costume, as it does have cultural significance and should not be used as a costume. So those tattoos would also be a no no.

Um, if it's not lava, then why is it orange, I ask??? Yeah, I'm going to stick with Floor Is Lava. I don't even like Halloween that much (Christmas is more my jam), but I love going to the Spirit Halloween stores! Thanks for sharing; can't wait until some stores closer to us open up!

I worked for several Halloweens for Spirit here in San Diego. Not only did I love my job, but my boss loved me back; I could fix any popped seams etc. on costumes that had been tried on, I could style the display wigs (and tutor the buying customers), give advice on make-up and hair (wait until the spirit gum gets tacky, and seal coloured hairspray with AquaNet to prevent flaking!), and help the customers put together specific ideas from random costumes/props. I was on my GAME, y'all. I wish they'd made that Beetlejuice light up sign years ago/ Halloween on '90, my brother and our friends threw a huge Beetlejuice party. We built Dante's Inferno Room in my friend's backyard, complete with devil girls and lighted signs (GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS). When you went inside, it was the Eternal Waiting Room; you went to the Front Desk for the bar, which featured a stupefying Beetlejuice Punch, made from multiple boozes and cans of Hi-C Ecto Punch. I made my brother's Beetlejuice costume from scratch; dude was 6' and 260, with a 56" chest, it was a LOT of work, but he loved it. Good times. I last saw him alive at our Halloween party (every year for 20 years) in 2010, he looked like hell and he was gone just over two months later. I miss him every damn day, but especially Halloween. I did the sugar skull face tattoos a few years back. They worked really well. It was one of my fav costumes.

So glad you finally got to Spirit and had a good time! I have gone back to ours a few times for some accessories... I think we're done for now? Ha. (Convention costumes, convention is Sept 16-19) My kids love it, even though they know mom won't buy pre-made costumes, we still have fun looking for ideas, and sometimes purchase accessories and decor there. Now I need to sew, or the accessories will have nothing to go with!

Ummm...at least one of those book cover parodies is a direct ripoff of a Threadless design. Hate to be a downer here, but just sayin'...

The Spirit Halloween Flagship Store is the main store of Spirit Halloween , located at 6725 E Black Horse Pike #26, Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey (08234).

History [ ]

The Flagship store opened as Spirit Halloween in 2012. The building was originally a Circuit City location. In 2004, Circuit City moved to a strip mall called Hamilton Commons near the  Hamilton Mall . The Circuit City's location at the mall was replaced with a  K&G Fashion Superstore in 2006 (which has since closed). Since then, it had remained vacant, but in 2012 was bought by Spirit Halloween as a seasonal store.

Former Flagship Store [ ]

The former store closed after the current store opened in a much larger building. The old store was featured in Spirit's 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 videos. A collection of videos of the old store are featured on the " Spirithalloweenmn " YouTube channel. As of 2012, the old location was abandoned. Not long after, the building was remodeled into four separate spaces.

• The former and current location is where the In-Store Experience (theme) videos are filmed at.
• The store's original color was white from Circuit City and the K&G Fashion Superstore. In 2018, a little before opening, the store was repainted gray.
• The doors on the right side is where the Live-Chat center is located.
• The Headquarters is located down the same street.
• The store has featured several online-only animatronics in-store for a limited time. Such as the Janglin' Bones Trio , Swinging Sally , and the Towering Boogeyman .
• The popularity of the store has increased over the years, with having crowds waiting outside on opening day.
• Since 2020, the store gives out exclusive 25% off coupons to visitors on opening day.
• According to a Haunter , who was told by an employee from The Headquarters, the porch display used for 2020 animatronic demonstrations and website pictures was filmed in back of the store.
• In 2021, the store gave out exclusive swag bags to the first 100 fans in line, live music, food trucks, and a coffin full of surprises. A ribbon-cutting ceremony also took place at 10:45 am, with doors opening at 11:00 am.
• The 2022 opening date was confirmed by an employee who sent out an email to select haunters on June 1st, and was officially confirmed by Spirit Halloween on June 3rd across social media platforms.
• In July of 2022, the store had an update for the seasonal posters. They are now lower and are in frames.
• In 2022 the circular ceiling lights were removed and replaced with long light fixtures.

Moscow walking routes – streets, boulevards and more

To feel the magic atmosphere of the ancient and, at the same time, advanced Moscow you should discover the city with your own eyes and legs. We suggest you to walk around the famous places in the center of the city.

Arbat street walking route

Arbat is considered the oldest pedestrian street in Moscow. The name of this street was first mentioned in 1475. What is so special about this place – museum, theater scenes, marketplace, and a place for walking? Arbat is a kind of a cozy world where you can immerse yourself in the amazing creative atmosphere. The street became pedestrian in 1986. Soon, the renovated street attracted artists, musicians, street performers and vendors, creating custom creative world within Arbat. Contemporary Arbat is something like the ‘Montmartre’ where you can see people draw, sing, dance, recite poetry, oratory and much more. Perceiving its noble and intellectual traditions try to feel the uniqueness and charm of this corner of Moscow.

Restaurant «Prague»

1. Start a walk along Arbat at its eastern end – Arbatskaya Square. Here you can see a XIX century building – a famous restaurant – «Prague» . It has existed since the 1890s and always was a meeting place of the elite. The restaurant itself is now closed for a reconstruction.

«Khudogestvenniy» Cinema

2. The restaurant overlooks «Khudogestvenniy» Cinema – one of the oldest cinemas in Moscow. It was opened in 1909. Following the Arbat Street, you will see numerous beautiful buildings that represent mostly the XIX century architecture. However, the real treasures of Arbat hides in its lanes. The Moscow State Museum «House of Burganov»

3. Turning to Bolshoy Afanasyevsky Lane you will find the beautiful Church of Athanasius and Cyril of Alexandria . Following the lane, go to the Moscow State Museum «House of Burganov» . A part of its exhibition, by the way, is clearly visible from the outside, so you can choose either to observe it from a distance or to visit this museum. Coincidentally, you will see many works of this artist travelling along this route. Next, go along the Sivtsev Vrazhek Lane all the way to Denezhny Lane, and from there, you will arrive to the Arbat.

The Melnikov House

4.If you turn left to the Krivoarbatsky Lane, you will find one of the city’s most remarkable examples of Constructivist architecture, an idealistic and futuristic movement that swept the Soviet Union in the 1920s. The Melnikov House is named after the architect who designed it in 1927. An experimental design, the house is formed from two connected cylinders and dotted with hexagonal windows. Plans to create a museum here exist, but even before that happens it is worth going to peer through the fence. Continue on Kirvoarbatsky Lane and turn right to go back to the Arbat. At the end of the lane, there will be the “Victor Tsoi Wall” , a one-of-a-kind tribute to the beloved musician.

The Vakhtangov Theater

5. At the Arbat Street you will see the Vakhtangov Theater and 6 a small fountain with golden figure of Princess Turandot, the title character of Carlo Gozzi play, and the most celebrated production of this theater.

6. At the Plotnikov Lane, you will see bronze statue of Bulat Okudzhava , a famous Russian songwriter and singer, walks sure-footed to meet you. The sculptor G.V. Frangulyan did his best to recreate the spirit of the legendary Arbat so adored by the bard around this composition.

Church of the Savior on the Sands (Spasa-na-peskah)

7. Head straight up Spasopeskovsky Lane to see the pretty Church of the Savior on the Sands (Spasa-na-peskah) dating the 18th century. At the far end of the lane is the elegant Spaso House , home of the U.S. Ambassador to Russia. Make your way back to the Arbat, and turn right to continue walking west.

8. On the right, you will notice a bronze statue of Russian poet, Alexander Pushkin, and his wife Natalia Goncharova. After their wedding at the nearby Great Ascension Church, the couple lived in the blue house on the left, which is now the Pushkin House-Museum .

9. The Arbat ends at Smolenskaya-Sennaya Square, which is dominated by the massive Ministry of Foreign Affairs . This is one of seven skyscrapers known as the Seven Sisters, which were built in 1947 to commemorate Moscow’s 800th anniversary.

Monument to Nikolai Gogol

1. Start the walk from Kropotkinskaya metro station and follow the boulevards clockwise. You will find yourself at Gogolevsky Boulevard , the symbolic start of the Boulevard Ring. It stretched from Prechistenskie Gate Square to Arbat Gate Square. A striking feature of this boulevard is that it is a three-tiered – external, middle and inner parts are at different heights. There are many houses and mansions of the late nineteenth century. Almost in the center of the boulevard is a monument to Mikhail Sholokhov. Two departments of Moscow Museum of Modern Art are located here. At the end of the boulevard, you can see a monument to Nikolai Gogol.

2. Coming over the Arbat Square, you will find yourself at Nikitsky Boulevard , with lots of beautiful buildings and nice cafes. The mansion of Count Alexander Tolstoy was situated here. The Niktitsky Gate completes the Boulevard. On your left, you will see fountain rotunda «Natalia and Alexander», established in honor of the 200th anniversary of Alexander Pushkin’s birth.

TASS Main Entrance

3. Moving forward you get to the longest boulevard of the Boulevard Ring – Tverskoy . At the beginning of the Boulevard, you will see the monument to Timiryazev. Also, note the TASS building on your right. In the center of the recently renovated Boulevard is a monument to Sergei Yesenin.

4. Crossing the Tverskaya Street, you will get to the Pushkin square where you will see the writer’s monument. Right behind the Pushkinsky Cinema begins the Strastnoy Boulevard , the widest at the Boulevard Ring. Here you will find a monument to composer Sergei Rachmaninoff and a monument to the actor and poet Vladimir Vysotsky.

Petrovsky Boulevard

5. Strastnoy Boulevard ends by Petrovskiye Gate and Petrovsky Boulevard begins. Here you will find many architectural and historical monuments.

Female Rogdestvensky Monastery

6. Rogestvensky Boulevard starts from the Trubnaya Square. The history of this place begins with the appearance of female Rogdestvensky and men Sretensky Monasteries in the area. In 2012, worship the cross in honor of the patroness St. Euphrosyne of Moscow was established at the boulevard.

7. Go further to Sretensky Boulevard , the shortest boulevard of the Boulevard Ring. In the beginning of the boulevard is a monument to Nadezhda Krupskaya.

Chistoprudny Boulevard

8. At the entrance to Chistoprudny Boulevard , you will see a monument to Alexander Griboyedov, and later – a monument to Kazakh poet Abai Kunanbayev. Chistoprudniy Boulevard is the only one at the Boulevard Ring where you will find the pond – “Pure ponds”(Chistie Prudi).

9. Coming through Pokrovsky Gates Square and Khokhlovskaya Square you will appear at Pokrovsky Boulevard that flows into the Yauzsky Boulevard . They are not so well known as Tverskoy or Chistoprudniy Boulevard, but they are also quite remarkable.

10. Ustyinsky drive completes the Boulevard Ring. Here, in the Yauzskie Gate park area you will find a monument to Motherland Border Guards. Perhaps we have not told you everything about the Boulevard Ring. Just have a walk right at the border of unpreserved White City and see wonderful nowadays Moscow through one of its best parts.

Kitay-gorod walking route

Kitai-gorod is one of the oldest and the most interesting areas of Moscow. It was a commercial and business district in the years before the Revolution. Here you will see traces of medieval Moscow.

Fragments of the foundation and the base of the Varvarskaya tower

1. Start your walk right at the Kitay-gorod metro station . In the wall of the underpass, you will see fragments of the foundation and the base of the Varvarskaya tower of the Kitay-Gorod. Kitaygorodskaya Wall was built in Moscow in the 1530s by architect Petrok Maly. It had 14 towers and was more than 2.5 km length. The Wall began from the Arsenal Tower and ended at Beklemishevskaya Tower of the Kremlin. It was almost completely demolished in the 1930s – 1950s.

2. Go to Varvarka Street , into the area of the former medieval fortress.The street is real reserve of old Moscow: ancient temple of St. George on Pskov Hill, the cathedral of the former Znamensky Monastery and Chambers of the Romanov Boyars are situated in the street.

3. If you go to the Ipatievsky Lane on the opposite side of Varvarka, then at the corner of the Nikitinskiy lane you will see the beautiful temple of the Trinity in Nikitniki of XVII century.

Gostinniy Dvor

4. Return to Varvarka and continue. To your left you will see one of the oldest buildings in Moscow – Old English Court , built in the late XV century by merchant Ivan Bobrischevym. On your right, there is Gostinniy Dvor . The first mention of it dates to the beginning of the XVI century, and at the end of XVIII century, it was rebuilt by architect Quarenghi. Now it hosts an exhibition hall, shops, restaurants and cafes. Not far from Gostinniy Dvor, Barbara the Martyr Church, which gave its name to the street, is located.

Burse Square

5. Turn right to the Crystal Lane (as you might guess, there used to trade crystal and glass)and go on to Ilyinka Street . The street is named after the ancient Elias Monastery. It was abolished, and the Church of Elijah the Prophet was built in its place. Follow the Ilyinka Street to the Burse Square. Exchange building (now a CCI of Russia) is on your right. Like a hundred years ago, it is – one of the main business areas of the capital: ministries, banks, representative offices of various companies. Many buildings have preserved from pre-revolutionary times. Near the Burse Square a beautiful Epiphany Cathedral of the Epiphany Monastery – one of the oldest in Moscow is located.

Nikolskaya Street

6. Reaching the Big Cherkassky Lane , turn left and walk along the early XIX century buildings to Nikolskaya Street. It is, perhaps, the busiest street of Kitay-Gorod. At all times it was one of the main streets of Moscow. There is a wide variety of shops, malls, restaurants, cafes and clubs.

7. Nikolskaya Street has always been famous for many bookshops. In the beginning of the XIX century, there were 26 out of 31 Moscow bookstores!

Tretyakovsky Passage

8. Go by the street towards the Kremlin. Right in the arch – Tretyakovsky Passage – a street with fashionable shops of famous international brands. This passage was arranged in the 1870s Tretyakov brothers. The Building in the Gothic style, with a sundial, bas-relief images of a lion and the unicorn is a former Synod printing. The house was built in the 1810s. Here, in 1564 the first Russian printed book “The Apostle» was published. Russian State Humanitarian University is now located here. Walk along the Nicholskaya Street and get to the Red Square, from where you can start a wonderful study of the Moscow Kremlin.

Zamoskvorechye walking route

The Zamoskvorechye District, located at the lower bank of the Moskva River, has almost undergone any renovation. Varied in style, Moscow churches XVII – XIX centuries, the Exchequers and the homes of famous Moscow merchants retain the image of old Moscow.

The first mention of the Zamoskvorechye in the documents refers to 1365, when first settlements began to form here. Since the second half of the XIX century, the area was popular among intellectuals. Outstanding figures of Russian culture lived and worked here. For example, young Lev Tolstoy rented an apartment in the merchant’s house in 1854-1855 in Pjatnitskaya Street. Fyodor Dostoevsky often visited his aunt in a house on Bolshaya Ordynka (known as Kumaninskoe farmstead). This area is closely associated with the names of Anna Akhmatova, the famous Russian publisher and educator Ivan Sytina. The Soviet era did not cause serious damage to Zamoskvorechye and despite modern development, here preserved historical architecture.

In 2013, a new pedestrian zone near the Tretyakovskaya Gallery, and includes Pyatnitskaya street Klimentovskiy, Ordinsky, Lavrushinsky Lanes and Kadashevskaya embankment, appeared in Zamoskvorechye.

Pyatnitskaya Street

1. Start a walk from Novokuznetskaya metro station . Go through Pyatnitskaya Street to the vintage Klimentovskiy Lane that connects Bolshaya Tatarskaya and Bolshaya Ordynka streets.

2. Here you can see a wonderful piece of the XVIII century architecture – the Temple of the Holy Martyr Clement , Pope (1762-1774). The northern side of Klimentovskiy Lane forms a small district occupied by shops and cafes.

What to do in Moscow

Travel in Moscow is easier than you might think: the city’s general layout is a series of concentric circles and radial lines emanating from Red Square and the Kremlin, and the centre is compact enough to explore on foot. Moscow’s sights can also be mapped as strata of its history: the old Muscovy that Russians are eager to show; the now retro-chic Soviet-era sites such as VDNK and Lenin’s Mausoleum; and the exclusive restaurants and shopping malls that mark out the new Russia. A CityPass is a good bet if you plan on seeing several of the city's heavyweight attractions.

Despite its size, Moscow's concentric layout is easier to grasp than you'd imagine, and the city's famous metro ensures that almost everywhere of interest is within fifteen minutes' walk of a station. Red Square and the Kremlin are the historic nucleus of the city, a magnificent stage for political drama, signifying a great sweep of history that includes Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great, Stalin and Gorbachev. Here you'll find Lenin's Mausoleum and St Basil's Cathedral, the famous GUM department store, and the Kremlin itself, whose splendid cathedrals and Armoury Museum head the list of attractions. Immediately east of Red Square lies the Kitay-gorod, traditionally the commercial district, and originally fortified like the Kremlin. Stretches of the ramparts remain behind the Metropol and Rossiya hotels, and the medieval churches of Zaryade and the shops along Nikolskaya ulitsa may tempt you further into the quarter, where you'll find the former headquarters of the Communist Party. The Kremlin and Kitay-gorod are surrounded by two quarters defined by rings of boulevards built over the original ramparts of medieval times, when Moscow's residential areas were divided into the "White Town" or Beliy Gorod, and the humbler "Earth Town" or Zemlyanoy Gorod. Situated within the leafy Boulevard Ring that encloses the Beliy Gorod are such landmarks as the Bolshoy Theatre and the Lubyanka headquarters of the secret police – with its "KGB Museum" – while the Zemlyanoy Gorod that extends to the eight-lane Garden Ring is enlivened by the trendy old and new Arbat streets, with three Stalin skyscrapers dominating the Ring itself.

Beyond this historic core Moscow is too sprawling to explore on foot. Krasnaya Presnya, Fili and the southwest describes a swathe which includes the former Russian Parliament building (known as the White House); Tolstoy's house and the Novodeviche Convent and Cemetery; Victory Park, with its war memorials and Jewish museum; and Moscow State University in the Sparrow Hills – the largest of the Stalin skyscrapers.

Across the river from the Kremlin, Zamoskvorechye and the south are the site of the old and new Tretyakov Gallery's superlative collection of Russian art. Private guided tours are recommended for art enthusiasts. Here too you'll find Gorky Park, the Donskoy and Danilov monasteries that once stood guard against the Tartars, and the romantic ex-royal estates of Tsaritsyno and Kolomenskoe – the latter known for staging folklore festivals and historical pageants.

Taganka and Zayauze, east of the centre, likewise harbour fortified monasteries – the Andronikov, Novospasskiy and Simonov – and the erstwhile noble estates of Kuskovo and Kuzminki, but the main lure for tourists is the Izmaylovo art market. Inside the Izmaylovo Kremlin, a cultural centre, there are also a range of attractions, from the Bread Museum and the Vodka History Museum to the fascinating Museum of Russian Toys.

Moscow's Northern Suburbs cover a vast area with a sprinkling of sights. Foremost is the Memorial and Museum of Cosmonautics and VDNK. For anyone interested in the glory days of the space race, and its monumental landmarks and propaganda, a visit is a must, like on this guided tour . In the vicinity are the Ostankino Palace, Moscow's Botanical Gardens and TV Tower. West from here, the Museum of Soviet Arcade Machines will appeal to visitors with an interest in Soviet social history, too.

Outside Moscow there's scope for day-excursions to the Trinity Monastery of St Sergei, the Abramtsevo artists' colony, Tchaikovsky's house in Kiln, Lenin's estate at Gorki Leninskie, and the battlefield of Borodino, where the battle is re-enacted every September. You can also head out to the village of Aksakovo for a beautiful two-hour troika ride. Further afield, the historic towns of Vladimir and Suzdal are graced by splendid cathedrals and monasteries attesting that they were the seat of a principality when Moscow was merely an encampment. Suzdal is one of the loveliest towns in Russia, and definitely merits an overnight stay. It's also possible to visit the Aviation Museum at Monino air base, en route to Vladimir, if you take the trouble to get permission ahead of time.

While Moscow's Bolshoy Ballet (also spelt "Bolshoi") is going through uncertain times, plagued by infighting and rivalries (not least the recent acid attack on Artistic Director Sergei Filin), few would deny themselves the chance to see this legendary company. During the season, evening performances start at 7pm, and Saturday and Sunday matinees at noon; there are no shows on Monday.

You can see what’s on currently and for a few months ahead on the Bolshoy’s website – although the English version sometimes lags behind the Russian one. The ballet company is usually abroad over summer and sometimes also in the autumn, leaving the junior corps de ballet to entertain visitors – although star dancers are certain to be in Moscow for the opening of the new season in September. For those not interested in ballet but more in the historical aspect of the Bolshoy theatre, take a guided historic tour of the grounds.

Built as a symbol of gratitude to divinity for having aided the Russians’ defeat of Napoleon in 1812, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour (daily 10am–6pm), opposite the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts at Volkhonka ul. 15, was demolished in 1931 in favour of a monument to socialism. The project was soon abandoned and years later, under Krushev’s rule, the site was turned into the world’s largest public swimming pool. In 1994 the Cathedral was rebuilt and is now a symbol of Moscow’s (and Russia’s) post-Communist religious revival.

Moscow isn’t a city that goes to bed early. Many venues act as a café by day, restaurant in the early evening, and both bar and club at night. This can cover anything from an arthouse café with a spot of live music to a dance warehouse, or a fancy nightclub with a restaurant and casino. Most cater to a certain crowd, whether it’s creative professionals, students, shell-suited "flatheads" or designer-draped models. While formal dress codes are rare, face control (feys kontrol) is widespread. Russians distinguish between “democratic” face control (aimed at keeping out hooligans and bandits), and the kind that favours the rich (never mind how they behave). It’s unwise to rile club security staff, however rude they might be.

There are scores of trendy bars and clubs on Krasny Oktyabr, a former chocolate factory building located across the river from Kropotkinskaya and now home to some of Moscow’s hippest nightlife.

Moscow's gastronomic scene has improved enormously over the last five years, with hundreds of new cafés and restaurants offering all kinds of cuisine and surroundings, aimed at anyone with a disposable income – from mega-rich New Russians and expense-account expatriates to fashion-conscious wealthy teenagers.

For cheap eats head to a canteen, where you can compile a tray of dishes smorgasbord-style. Take advantage of the great-value business lunches offered by cafés and restaurants during the week between noon and 4pm.

For well over a century, Moscow has been one of the world’s great centres of classical music, opera and ballet, most famously represented by the Bolshoy Theatre but also by its orchestras and choirs. Theatre can be tricky for non-Russian speakers though circus and puppetry surpass the language barrier. Moscow’s film industry and annual international film festival dwarf St Petersburg’s, but at other times most cinemas screen Hollywood blockbusters.

All this can be surprisingly good value, provided you ask for the cheapest ticket available ( samiy deshoviy bilyet ).

Gorky Park on ul. Krymskiy Val 9 (R100; Park Kultury) is a large park occupying an area of over 700 acres along the river. In the winter the frozen-over paths become one of the city’s largest ice rinks, while in the summer Muscovites stroll the area savouring an ice cream.

Admirers of Bulgakov, Chekhov, Gorky and Tolstoy will find their former homes preserved as museums. Anton Chekhov lived at Sadovaya-Kudrinskaya ul. 6, in what is now the Chekhov House-Museum (Tues, Thurs & Sat 11am–6pm, Wed & Fri 2–8pm; R100, student R60; Barrikadnaya), containing humble personal effects, while the Gorky House-Museum (Wed–Sun 11am–6pm, closed last Thurs of the month; free; Arbatskaya) on the corner of Povarskaya ulitsa and ulitsa Spiridonovka is worth seeing purely for its raspberry-pink Art Nouveau decor. Leo Tolstoy admirers should head to the wonderfully preserved Tolstoy Memorial Estate on ul. Lva Tolstogo 21 (Tues, Wed & Fri 10am–6pm, Thurs 1–9pm, Sat & Sun 11am–6pm; R200, student R60; Park Kultury) where the Tolstoy family lived after moving to Moscow from their country estate in 1881, and where the novelist wrote War and Peace . The Bulgakov Museum at Bolshaya Sadovaya ul. 10 (Sun–Thurs 1–11pm, Fri & Sat until 1am; free; t 495/970-0619; Mayakovskaya), is the house where the novelist lived from 1921 to 1924. There are nightly tours (1–6am; R550; phone a week in advance for tour in English).

The Museum of Modern History at Tverskaya ul. 21 (Tues, Wed, Fri 10am–6pm, Thurs & Sat 11am–7pm, Sun 10am–5pm, closed last Fri of the month; R100; Tverskaya) brings the Communist past alive with striking displays of Soviet propaganda posters, photographs and state gifts, although there’s a frustrating lack of English translation.

Opposite the entrance to Gorky Park at Krymskiy Val 10, the New Tretyakov Gallery (Tues–Sun 10am–7.30pm; R360, student R220; Park Kultury) takes a breakneck gallop through twentieth-century Russian art, from the avant-garde of the 1910–1920s to contemporary artists. Full and illuminating commentary in English is a bonus.

A cluster of shining domes above a fortified rampart belongs to the lovely Novodevichiy Convent (daily 10am–5pm; closed Tues & last Mon of month; R150; Sportivnaya), founded by Ivan the Terrible in 1524. At its heart stands the white Cathedral of the Virgin of Smolensk. In its cemetery lie numerous famous writers, musicians and artists, including Gogol, Chekhov, Stanislavsky, Bulgakov and Shostakovich.

One of Moscow’s most exclusive neighbourhoods, Patriarch’s Ponds is a pleasant spot (there’s actually just one pond) for a summer stroll or an ice-skate on its frozen waters in the depths of winter. The area is also known for being the location of the opening scene of Mikhail Bulgakov’s magical realist novel The Master and Margarita .

Founded in 1898 in honour of the famous Russian poet, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts at Volkhonka ul. 12 (Tues–Sun 10am–7pm; R150–300, separate fee for Impressionist wing; Kropotkinskaya) holds a hefty collection of European paintings , from Italian High Renaissance works to Rembrandt, and an outstanding display of Impressionist works.

Get the city grit out of your skin at the exquisitely elaborate Sandunovsky baths (Neglinnaya ul. 14 bldg 3–7 w www.sanduny.ru ; Teatralnaya), patronized by Muscovites since 1896. Join Russian businessmen and socialites in the banya , a wooden hut heated with a furnace, where you are invited to sweat out impurities, get beaten energetically with birch twigs, and finally plunge into ice-cold water. Men’s and women’s baths are separate, with the women’s section more like a modern spa. A three-hour session costs R1000. Daily 8am–10pm.

Founded in 1892 by the financier Pavel Tretyakov, the Tretyakov Gallery at Lavrushinskiy per. 10 (Tues–Sun 10am–7.30pm; R360, student R220; Tretyakovskaya) displays an outstanding collection of pre-Revolutionary Russian art. Russian icons are magnificently displayed, and the exhibition continues through to the late nineteenth century, with the politically charged canvases of the iconic realist Ilya Repin and the Impressionist portraits of Valentin Serov, including The Girl with Peaches , one of the gallery’s masterpieces.

To see Soviet triumphalism at its most prolific, visit the Exhibition of Economic Achievements, or VDNKh (Prospekt Mira; VDNK/Prospekt Mira), with its statue upon statue of ordinary workers in heroic poses. Adding to the scene is the permanent trade-fair-cum-shopping-centre housed in the grandiose Stalinist architecture of the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition of 1939, and the People’s Friendship Fountain, flanked by Soviet maidens, each symbolizing a Soviet republic. One of the most hubristic Soviet monuments ever built is the Space Obelisk , which bears witness to Soviet designs on the stratosphere. Unveiled in 1964 – three years after Gagarin orbited the earth – it’s a sculpture of a rocket blasting nearly 100m into the sky on a plume of energy clad in shining titanium. Moscow’s giant Ferris wheel, small amusement park and numerous food vendors help to create a fairground-like atmosphere. For a fantastic view over the VDNK, take the lift to the 25th floor of Hotel Cosmos across Prospekt Mira.

Day 1 Panoramic city tour

Welcome to the glorious capital of Russia, Moscow! You’ll be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel.

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street

Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Take a stroll along Old Arbat street - the most famous street in Moscow. Through the centuries Arbat used to be one of the most bohemian places in Moscow. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.

The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.

Visit beautiful Kolomeskoye Estate or Izmailovo Kremlin, or spend a day exploring the beautiful city of the Golden Ring (Russian province) - Sergiev Posad. In the evening you will be transferred to the airport for your departure to your next destination.
