Top 9 St Louis Family Vacation Ideas

If your family is looking for a city with fun activities, a national park, museums, sports, and much more, a St. Louis family vacation is for you! We love visiting St. Louis with kids , especially because it has one of our favorite children’s museums and a great free zoo. Below we talk about those activities and more, as well as where to eat and stay.

Things to Do In St Louis On Your Family Vacation

Gateway arch national park.

If you’re into visiting all the National Parks, like us, you’ll want to stop by the nation’s 60th, established in 2018. Taking the tram ride to the top of the arch is a unique experience and a great way to see the city.

When you buy tickets for the tram online, you’ll see the option to purchase a combo ticket that includes the Tram Ride to the Top & a St. Louis Riverfront Cruise.

This one-hour cruise is a fun experience anytime, but if you’re visiting on the weekend in the fall, try to catch the NPS Ranger-led cruise, where a National Park Ranger leads the cruise and shares their knowledge of the National Park and surrounding area.

If you’re looking for free activities to do around the arch, explore the museum under the arch and learn about the United States’ westward expansion. Stop by the visitor’s center to grab a Junior Rangers program workbook and walk along the St. Louis Riverfront Trail.

We also liked walking through the Explorer’s Garden, which has native plants, located in the North Gateway area of the park.

The Gateway Arch National Park does not have its own parking, but they do offer parking in the East Parking Garage of Busch Stadium for a special rate.

However, you have to pre-purchase tickets on event days to get the special rate and ensure you can get a spot. Learn more great tips at 6 Top Tips on Visiting the Gateway Arch National Park .

City Museum

Playing on the ramps at the City Museum St Louis, St Louis Family Vacation Ideas

This giant playground is by far our favorite children’s museum in the country. With tons of things to climb over, explore around, tunnel under, and slide down, it’s great for little kids, older kids, and parents. Do not miss the 10-story spiral slides!

This museum is not only full of interactive exhibits; it’s a giant piece of art. Designed and built by artists, every area has its own unique feel and was clearly well thought out. There is also an art area where the kids can make their own art.

Our kids loved playing hide and seek in the caves area, running up and down the ramps, and swinging on ropes in the skateless park area. The rooftop is also not to be missed, but it is only open from March to October and will close if it’s raining.

A toddler area is also meant for kids ages six and under. This is a great spot to take a break if you have younger kids, as the rest of the museum is full of twists and turns, and you’ll be running and climbing the whole day to keep up with your kids!

Your kids will not get bored at this museum, so plan on spending a whole day here. We recommend eating a bigger breakfast and then just grabbing a snack at the snack bar in the museum for lunch. Get your general admission ticket to the City Museum here ! Check out our Top 10 Tips for Visiting the City Museum .

The Magic House

This children’s museum is a more traditional interactive museum compared to the City Museum but is still a great spot to include in your St. Louis vacation. We love that this museum was designed to be a maker space for kids with a focus on art, design, and engineering.

Whereas the City Museum will be great for kids of all ages, including teens, we recommend the Magic House for younger kids. There are many hands-on activities meant to inspire creativity and curiosity, but we also like that this is a fun, safe space for the littler kids to play and explore.

Forest Park

Shows 2 kids inside the butterfly house at the St Louis Zoo, St Louis Family Vacation Ideas

This city park is huge and a great place to spend a day while visiting St. Louis with kids. Not only is it home to the Saint Louis Zoo, Saint Louis Art Museum, and the St. Louis Science Center, and three free things to do on this list. It also has a great 17-acre kid’s nature playscape area and a huge playground.

Anne O’C Albrecht’s Nature Playscape has sand play areas, boulders and rocks to climb on, walking paths, and plenty of water features, including hand water pumps. We love parks encouraging kids to climb, play with water and interact with nature.

There is plenty of parking in Forest Park, and then once there, most things are pretty walkable, including the art museum, zoo, playground, and nature playscape. The science center is a little further walk, but still totally doable. There’s a great interactive map at https://forestparkmap.org/.

St. Louis Zoo

Shows a playful brown bear at the St Louis Zoo, St Louis Family Vacation Ideas

We love including a zoo visit on our family vacations, especially when it’s free! This zoo is comparable to most zoos we’ve been to in size.

It has all the classic zoo animals, and is conveniently located in Forest Park. The brown bear was super active when we were there. It was jumping up and down in the water, which made our day.

We recommend spending at least three hours here to see all the animals. Paid parking is available in the zoo lots, but there is also limited free parking on nearby streets in Forest Park, or park in the main parking area of Forest Park and stroll over.

Saint Louis Art Museum

Shows a mother and daughter outside the St Louis Art Museum, St Louis Family Vacation Ideas

Another great free activity in Forest Park is the Saint Louis Art Museum. This art museum has three floors that cover a wide range of art from around the world.

Since it’s free every day and in a convenient location, this is a great way to introduce young kids to an art museum. As you can literally just walk through a couple of rooms and head out.

If you can visit on a Sunday, the museum has hands-on art activities geared toward families. On Wednesdays, they have story time, art viewing, and art activity, all geared toward children aged 3-5.

Saint Louis Science Center

Our third free thing to do in Forest Park is the super kid-friendly St. Louis Science Center. We love science centers as they combine some seriously heavy-duty learning with lots of hands-on fun.

This science center includes an Omnimax Theater and a Planetarium Theater (both require purchased tickets.)

As with most children’s museums, they offer a ton of special exhibits and programs, so be sure to check out their website before visiting to see if anything is happening while you’re in St. Louis.

We like to pick the day we’ll spend in Forest Park based on what’s happening at the science center and add in the rest of the day’s activities around that.

Grant’s Farm

This is the historic home of the Busch family, but more importantly, it’s the current home to over 900 animals! See how they train and care for the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales, watch and possibly interact with smaller animals, like rabbits, goats, and turtles, and hand-feed the deer in Deer Park.

So, why is it called Grant’s Farm? President Ulysses S. Grant built a cabin here in 1855, which is still on the farm. You can take a tour to see the inside and outside of the cabin and the outside of the Busch family estate home.

St. Louis Cardinal’s Baseball Game

We’re not Cardinals fans, but we love going to baseball games, and Busch Stadium, the home of the Cardinals, is a great stadium to see a game in. It was built in 2006 with all the modern amenities and a great layout but was built with a retro style, so you feel like you are in a historic stadium.

If you want to make a day of it, spend some time before or after the game at Ballpark Village, right next to the stadium. You can eat, shop and even visit the Cardinals Hall of Fame and Museum. They have outdoor family-friendly movies on select Thursdays if you’re visiting in the summer.

St. Louis Union Station

This is a spot in St. Louis where you will find a lot of kids’ activities, family fun, and food under one really cool roof. We love when old buildings are repurposed, and this is an excellent example of that.

Union Station was originally built in 1894, and although it’s now filled with restaurants, shows, and activities, they’ve restored a lot of the original architecture.

Union Station is conveniently located, so you can stop in while exploring other downtown areas or make a day of it and stick around to do all the activities.

Our top three activities at Union Station are the St. Louis Aquarium, the Rope Course, and the St. Louis Wheel, a 200-foot tall ferris wheel with enclosed gondolas.

Where to Eat in St. Louis

Shows a man in front of the painted sign for Seamus McDonald in St Louis, St Louis Family Vacation Ideas

If you’re looking for a casual neighborhood restaurant that is in walking distance of Forest Park, we recommend Seamus McDaniel’s, a fun Irish pub.

There is an outside space that has plenty of room for the kids to run around. Located in the Dogtown neighborhood, there is an ice cream shop, cookie shop, and brewery close by.

Super fun and unique restaurant that is kid-friendly and located downtown are Pieces the St. Louis Board Game Bar & Cafe.

It’s just like it sounds, with over 1000 games to choose from and Game Navigators who can help you pick games and learn the rules.

Where to Stay in St. Louis

A great thing about St. Louis is that it is very affordable. You can find a spacious VRBO or higher-end hotel in a good location for a reasonable price. If you are RVing, there are a couple of good RV park options, including one that is so close you have a great view of the Gateway Arch.

This  Stylish Home is large, affordable, and has a garage. This is a great option if you have a car with you as you can get a neighborhood feel while being close to the downtown. This house also has five bedrooms and three bathrooms, so there is plenty of room for a big family.

When looking for a VRBO we recommend the Dogtown neighborhood . Since it is close to good local restaurants and walking distance to the zoo, art museum, and science center in Forest Park.

If you want to stay close to our favorite kid activity in St. Louis, the City Museum, we recommend the  Last Hotel . This hotel has an onsite restaurant and swimming pool and is also within walking distance of the Gateway Arch National Park, Union Station, and Busch Stadium.

Another even budget-friendlier option downtown is the  Hampton Inn St Louis at the Arch  hotel. This hotel stay includes a free continental breakfast, which we love because it’s convenient and saves money.

Campgrounds

The DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park is a great option. If you want to stay as close as possible to the city. This RV Park isn’t anything special, but it’s close enough to give you a great view of the Gateway Arch from your RV window. There isn’t much at this RV park other than your typical amenities — bathroom, shower, and laundry — but it was clean, safe and a quick Uber drive into downtown.

Another close campground is the  Cahokia RV Parque , which is about a ten-minute drive to downtown St. Louis. This RV Park has a playground, an onsite BBQ restaurant, laundry, and an outdoor pool. If you travel by car, this RV Park is a good choice.

If you’re traveling in the off-season. And looking for a year-round campground close to St. Louis, check out  Kamper Kompanion RV Park . This is an hour northeast of St. Louis but is right off the highway, so it is an easy drive. This RV Park is cute, clean, and quiet.

10 Most EPIC St. Louis Day Trips | 2024 Guide

Nestled along the Mississippi River on the border of Missouri and Illinois, St. Louis is a city where innovation and history collide. This once peaceful city center now booms with activity, offering visitors countless restaurants, cultural venues, parks, and museums to explore.

Before airplanes existed, St. Louis was a central meeting point for America’s railway lines, riverways, and roads. As a center of convergence, the city attracted a lot of wealth and luxury, which can still be noticed across the modern city today. But this also makes St Louis a really accessible city for day trips.

If you’ve had your feel for the city and you’re looking for some day trips from St Louis, then you’ve come to the right place. In this guide, I’ve listed some of the best surrounding towns, nature reserves, and landmarks, so you can take day trips in St Louis without a hitch.

Getting Around St. Louis and Beyond

St. Louis is a small city with an even smaller population spread across a relatively large area. Because of this, the best way to get around the city is by car or MetroLink.

MetroLink runs an efficient light rail system offering stops throughout the inner city and central suburbs. There is a Blue Line and Red Line, which is the most convenient and affordable public transport option to travel from the airport into the inner city.

The system also operates MetroBus routes, a convenient yet less speedy way to travel the inner city.

While the metro services connect the main parts of downtown St. Louis, the light rail takes you out into the St Louis Suburbs , but not too far out.

This makes having your vehicle useful in St. Louis, especially if you intend to take day trips fin St Louis.

If you’re flying into St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL), you can rent a car on your arrival at one of the leading car rental agencies. This isn’t the cheapest way to get around, but it’s a lot more convenient and offers a level of freedom when taking day trips in St. Louis.

St. Louis’s roads are tourist-friendly with signage, making navigating the city and surrounding neighborhoods easy. Traffic isn’t too bad either. Parking can get super pricey, so if you do rent a car and stay in a St Louis Airbnb with free on-site parking.

Taxis are another convenient yet expensive option. Country Yellow Cab and Laclede Cab are the two leading taxi companies in the city. You might prefer to use apps like Uber and Lyft, which operate here too. Most taxi rides start at $3.50 and cost $2.50 per mile.

Half Day Trips in St. Louis

Because of its size, St. Louis is a popular place for a quick visit while exploring the USA . If you only have a few days to spend here, why not take a half day trip from St Louis?

This way, you can better understand the surrounding area without waking up at the crack of dawn and traveling too far to see some of the top attractions . Here are my favorite half day trips in St. Louis.

Alton, IL

Just a 35-minute drive or 45-minute train ride north of St. Louis lies a small town adored by nature lovers. Alton sits at the interception of the three great rivers (the Mississippi, Missouri, and Illinois Rivers), which offer all sorts of outdoor activities for adventurous travelers.

As a historic city founded over 200 years ago, Alton is known for a few other quirky attractions. Did you know that Alton was home to the world’s tallest man as well as a legendary man-eating bird known as the Piasa?

You’ll also find some of America’s greatest antique stores in this town, which is a haven for antique collectors. Honestly, you could spend an entire day exploring the antique district.

Alton has a reputation for being America’s most haunted small town, home to plenty of haunted mansions with spooky stories to haunt you for years to come.

No matter when you visit this attractive town, there will likely be an event or festival worth checking out. In fact, being so near to St. Louis, you might even choose to extend your day trip from St. Louis and find accommodation in this historic town. You’ll feel right at home at this river view loft on Airbnb .

Kimmswick, MO

If historical towns and relaxing strolls tickle your fancy, you’ll love this half day trip to Kimmswick. This Missouri town is just half an hour from St. Louis along the Mississippi River.

Kimmswick offers a chance to take a step back in time to the 1800s. Take your time exploring this small town dotted with one-of-a-kind shops and boutique restaurants. Some of the shops still standing today were first founded in the 1800s. They’re pretty old!

Depending on what time of year you visit, your day trip could coincide with one of Kimmswick’s famous festivals. The Kimmswick Apple Butter Festival in October is a crowd favorite.

Other than slow-cooking apples throughout the day, the streets are lined with food vendors and craft stores, and there is live music flowing throughout the town.

The Strawberry Festival is another event worth attending. Every June, the town is bursting at the seams with everything strawberry related. Think strawberry shortcake, cheesecake, iced tea, chocolate-covered strawberries, and everything in between.

Full-Day Trips in St. Louis

If you have a bit more time to spare, I highly recommend spending a few days exploring the areas around St. Louis. There is much to see and do in this area, from visiting state parks to browsing antiques in historic towns!

Here are the best full day trips from St Louis.

Springfield, IL

Springfield, IL

Another bustling city within a day trip from St. Louis, Springfield, Illinois, is just an hour and a half drive from the city. If you want to take public transport, a train will take under two hours to get from one city to the other, and is a scenic way to enjoy the journey.

The city is best known for being the home of Abraham Lincoln. Those interested in American history can visit the Presidential Museum and Library. This museum has permanent exhibitions and hosts regular events, allowing visitors to experience a fascinating part of the country’s history.

Enjoy a stroll around the Old State Capitol Building before paying the Lincoln Tomb a visit, which is the final resting place of one of America’s most influential forefathers.

Once you’ve had your daily dose of American history and culture, spend the afternoon at Lake Springfield. This lake features many gorgeous recreational beaches and yacht clubs where you can rent a boat and cruise the lake between sunrise and sunset.

I even recommend spending an entire day trip from St. Louis at this lake, lapping the sunshine along the gorgeous shoreline.

Hermann, MO

Hermann Missouri

A charming town to visit on a beautiful drive from the city, Hermann is a major highlight of Missouri wine country. Whether traveling with a significant other, solo, or with young kids, there is something to offer everyone in this attractive small town.

The town is well known for its German heritage, which is evident in its name, and the germanic sounding vineyards in the area. This is because the town was, unsurprisingly, established by German settlers in the 1800s.

The town sits along the Missouri River, which gives the area the rich and fertile soil needed to cultivate wine grapes. Loved for its beautiful natural setting, many vineyards, and walkable downtown area, Hermann is a wonderful place to visit for a relaxing day.

In fact, the town is so easily walkable and compact, I recommend you ditch your car entirely and take the train in. This way, you won’t have to find parking and can enjoy a scenic train ride through the countryside.

Suggested trip: Painting Class at Blank Canvas Studio

Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park, MO

Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park

Calling all outdoor adventurers and adrenaline junkies:

Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park is a beautiful natural attraction less than two hours away from St. Louis by car. Take a day trip from St. Louis to visit this incredible natural phenomenon, which was created by volcanic activity thousands of years ago.

River water flowing through the volcanic rock formations has created hollow pools, rapids, and waterfalls, making this place a sanctuary for outdoor lovers.

Besides swimming in the gorgeous clear rock pools, there are plenty of hiking trails around this state park. Bring a packed picnic, which can be enjoyed at one of the many picnic spots that make this place the perfect site for a family day out.

If you feel like extending your trip and spending a full day or two in this natural haven, why not rent out this trendy mountain home on Airbnb ? It’s located near bike and hiking trails and boasts beautiful views of the valley.

Carbondale, IL

Carbondale Illinois

Carbondale, Illinois, is a small college town just two hours away from St. Louis. Home to the Southern Illinois University of Carbondale.

This town is nationally recognized for its outstanding education and research and is a top spot for a St. Louis day trip. The university brings a wealth of culture, sporting events, and architectural beauty to the town.

Spend some time wandering the downtown Carbondale streets, which feature over 25 historical buildings and boutique stores.

If you love a farmers market as much as I do, walk through the Saturday Carbondale Farmers Market, which is supplied by a community of multigenerational farmers and local artisans.

The SIU Campus is also worth a visit, with its grand Rennaissance Revival Hall built in the late 1800s. With a young student population, Carbondale is bursting with fun activities, events and nightlife.

If you would prefer to follow a more adventurous day trip itinerary, the Giant City State Park is just a fifteen-minute drive south of the town and is a gorgeous place to catch a breath of fresh air.

The State Park boasts a bunch of lakes, hiking trails, and rock climbing locations. Some even refer to it as the Little Grand Canyon – that’s a big name to live up to!

The Katy Trail, MO

The Katy Trail, MO

The Katy Trail might just be the most well-known day trip in St. Louis on this list. This beautiful walking and cycling trail stretches for over 200 miles throughout the state of Missouri, following the Missouri River.

If you’ve hit your city limit and crave a bit of fresh air, cycling this track is a great way to get out into nature. The trail is relatively flat, making it popular for all ages and levels of fitness. If you do get tired along the way, there are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat.

One of the main attractions along the trail is the local wineries. Check out Defiance Ridge Vineyards, Sugar Creek Winery, Montelle Vinery, or Honey Bee Vineyard Farm for some wine tasting or a lazy lunch.

Feel free to join the trail at any stage along the river. However, the town of Defiance and Augusta are the quickest to get to St. Louis (between 40 and 50-minute drive).

Suggested trip: Katy Trail River Route Adventure

Columbia, MO

Columbia Missouri

Home to the main campus of the University of Missouri, it’s no surprise Columbia is one of the most attractive cities in the state.

It will take you just under an hour to drive to Columbia on a day trip from St. Louis. Alternatively, catch the Greyhound bus, and you’ll arrive within two and a half hours.

Located at the heart of Missouris rolling hills and prairies, the area is also known for its gorgeous outdoor landscapes. Explore 2200 acres within the Rock Bridge Memorial State Park, which features an intricate cave system worth exploring.

For a more manicured setting, The Shelter Gardens are a lovely spot to lay beneath rustling trees on a summer afternoon.

Downtown Columbia is just as you might expect from a college town: vibrant restaurants, excellent shopping options, and bustling bars rumbling into the early morning hours.

Spend some time exploring this central area, grab a bite to eat on the university campus, and walk off your meal with a stroll through the lush green squares.

As a typical Midwestern university town, there are a few great museums worth visiting here too. My favorite is the George Caleb Bingham Art Gallery which houses some incredible contemporary works. The Museum of Art and Archeology is another interesting institution that dives into the depths of human existence.

Suggested trip: Columbia Scavenger Hunt

Arcadia Valley, MO

st louis family day trips

Set 80 miles south of St. Louis, surrounded by tall mountains and bubbling creeks, Arcadia Valley is one of Missouri’s best-kept secrets. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, learning about history, or tasting local midwestern cuisine, you must visit Arcadia Valley on a day trip in St. Louis.

With three state parks in the Valley, all within half an hour’s drive from one another, there are plenty of options for hiking, cycling, and camping in this area. Choose to hike either Hughes Mountain or Tom Sauk Mountain for incredible views of the valley.

If you visit during June, you might overlap with the famous Arcadia Barbeque Battle in June or the Lion’s Club Rodeo in August. Pretty much every weekend throughout summer, you can enjoy local musical talent at many restaurants and venues.

Ste. Genevieve, MO

Ste. Genevieve Missouri

Founded in 1735 by French-Canadian colonial settlers, Ste. Genevieve is a small town with a uniquely French influence. It was, in fact, the first European settlement in Missouri. Today, the town is an eco-friendly destination perfect for a family visit, located just an hour’s drive from St. Louis.

French architecture is very much evident throughout the town, which is beautifully laid out, featuring tons of green spaces and wide avenues. There are plenty of tours of the historic buildings and houses, which you can take from downtown Ste. Genevieve.

If a day trip in St. Louis packed with antiques, wine tastings, and peaceful streets gets you excited, you might even enjoy staying over in this lazy town. How about a night in this cozy Airbnb on the Missouri – Illinois border?

As the oldest town west of the Mississippi River, you can expect to see some homes dating back hundreds of years. Many of these historic buildings now house antique shops filled with trinkets and furniture reminiscent of an earlier era.

The town is also home to the Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park, which is an incredible place to visit throughout the year. This unique space features well-preserved historic homes of communities that once called the area home.

Visit the Beauvais-Amoureux House for a real taste of the original French Colonial architecture.

The hotel prices in St. Louis vary based on the tourist season. Since people tend to visit the place a lot in September, the costs can reach up to $155 per night. If you visit this city in the off-season, you can easily find a good room for up to $55 per night. On the other hand, it also depends on the type of hotel you choose and how close it is to the downtown and the airport. On average, you can find a good hotel room for $150-$210 per night when the tourist season is at its peak. When things are cooled down, you can find a suitable room for $50-$110 per night.

Whether you want a morning coffee, lunch, or dinner, the restaurants in St. Louis got you covered. The best part is that most of these restaurants have a kid’s exclusive zone, so they can enjoy the food and play as well.

Dewey’s Pizza

There is no better place than Dewey’s Pizza for both children and adults. Kids can enjoy their pizza and play games with their staff, while adults can enjoy curated wine and beer with the most famous cheese pizza. While you are eating their pizza, don’t forget to order their signature salad and have a blast combination of spice, garlic, and vegetables. With a comfortable atmosphere, tons of drink options, and a menu that is best for kids and adults, this is the best restaurant in St. Louis. Order their Risotto Balls for your kids, and in the desert, you can try their signature gelato made by their pastry chef.

Rise Coffee House

You can get the best coffee flavor at Rise Coffee House to go with your eggs, toast, and bacon for breakfast. The ideal time to go here is in the morning, though their lunch and supper offerings are also excellent. Additionally, it has a wooden playhouse in the back that is accessible to all children. Additionally, they have someone to watch over the kids so that the parents can eat breakfast alone. If you really want to enjoy your coffee and dessert, choose their outdoor seating.

Once you are done checking everything in St. Louis, it is time to widen your view and check the areas that are close to this city.

Springfield, Illinois

Despite not being the closest city to Louis, the most well-known attraction in this town is the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum. You can arrive at this location and engage with history after a 90-minute trip without any stops. In addition to this exhibit, you can visit the Old State Capitol building to see how it looked in the 19th century. The food here is average, but your kids will love the special treats in that city.

st louis family day trips

If you want a good education day trip from St. Louis, there is no better place than Hannibal. The boyhood home of author Mark Twain is only two hours away from St. Louis, which is also near the Mississippi river. This is one of the best tourist destinations featuring caves, trains, and ghost tours. If you want to spend three to four hours of fun with kids, take them to Hannibal and watch them get mesmerized by the retro theme of the city.

Meramec Caverns

st louis family day trips

Meramec Caverns is one of the best natural wonders in St. Louis. Not only do these caverns show the perfect natural patterns, but they are also quite deep, so you can spend a lot of time exploring them. In addition, route 66 in these caverns has some historical claims to fame that you must check. However, do not wander alone and always stick with the guide, or you might get lost in these caves. It will take around 80-90 minutes to reach these caves from St. Louis.

st louis family day trips

Hermann was established by Germans in 1837, and it is a heaven for those who like wine. This is the best place if you want to have a small picnic with your family and grab a bottle of quality wine. In addition, you can visit the wineries and enjoy the greenery and beautiful aroma, and win a free wine bottle of your choice. Hermann is 67 miles away from St. Louis, and it might take you almost an hour to get there.

The Katy Trail

The Katy Trail is the ideal location if you want to go biking or strolling with your family because it offers not only a lengthy, tranquil path but also gorgeous scenery and beautiful trees. In the beginning, you can leave your car parked, rent some bicycles, and begin your tour. The trail is straight, so you don’t need a guide. When you get tired, rest under a tree, have some food, and then head back. You can travel there in about 30 minutes as it is only 20 miles from the city center.

Johnson’s Shut-Ins

st louis family day trips

The fun thing about this place is that a volcano created it, and the river flow has created waterfalls and pools. This is the best place for a one-day trip from St. Louis if you are there in summer and want to dip your feet in the water and have something to drink. If you can, grab some mangoes and enjoy them at the riverside. The distance from St. Louis is only 84 miles, but you’ll take around two hours to get there.

st louis family day trips

You can explore St. Louis with private cabs, metro rail service, and buses, rent a car, or use an uber.

Private Car

Once again, your personal car is here to the rescue, making the entire trip easy and convenient. The biggest perk of having your own car is the freedom to stop anywhere to eat food or buy something. However, remember to park the car right in front of your view. That way, you can keep an eye on it. In addition, you can save a lot of money and not wait for the cab to arrive, making it a safer option. The only problem with using a car in St. Louis is the traffic; sometimes, it gets challenging to find a parking spot nearby.

If you don’t have a car, the next best option is to travel in St. Louis is the Metro’s light rail system. These lines are connected to Saint Louis Science Center and Gateway Arch National Park. You don’t have to search for these locations and many others, like the City Museum and Missouri Botanical Garden. This is one of the cheapest methods to travel in this city, but you’ll be limited to visiting places where the metro stops. So, this might not be a suitable option if you want to enjoy multiple stops.

Metro is not accessible in every region of St. Louis, so the next best option is to use a bus. Since there are more than 70 bus routes, you can reach anywhere in St. Louis at much cheaper rates. This is a preferred method to travel in St. Louis with kids as you can drop by anywhere, like the Louis children’s museum, Saint Louis art museum, the national park, and the gateway arch. However, keep an eye on your belongings, as some people might not be there for traveling only.

The best choice is to use a bicycle if you want to escape traffic and get some exercise. If you wish to travel more quickly, an electric bike is an option; nonetheless, a pedal bike is preferable for short distances. Although they are more expensive than a bus or subway, they give you complete control and no fuel costs. Additionally, parking is not a concern because you can leave it on the sidewalk or use a public bike rack. Renting a bike costs $1 for 30 minutes. Therefore, even if you use it for six hours, each individual will be charged $12.

Taxis are widely available in St. Louis and are an ideal way to travel in this city. The taxi fare is also low, so you can travel without spending a lot of money. In addition, you don’t have to worry about not getting one, because they’ll be everywhere. However, do not share your exact destination with the taxi driver for security purposes. On the other hand, always keep the maps on for the location and do not let any driver take a different turn.

st louis family day trips

Due to its location in the middle of the nation, St. Louis is essentially easily accessible from every city. Depending on where you’re coming from and how quickly you want to get there, you can use any mode of transportation.

The fastest way to reach St. Louis, if you are coming from far away, is via airplane. Flights to this city are cheap because it is not popular among tourists, and even most locals prefer exploring other areas. However, make sure to book an Uber or Lyft to reach your hotel. The airport is almost 30 minutes away from the city, so be ready for an additional drive of 40-45 minutes before you reach your destination. The best part is that the city is small, so you’ll see most of it before you get to the hotel. This gives you an idea of the places you can visit for food and entertainment.

Buses to St. Louis

Six bus lines go to St. Louis from 73 different routes with four stops in between. This city is hours away from many major cities, making it an accessible place. Bus tickets are much cheaper compared to planes, and the services are comfortable. However, we won’t recommend sleeping during the journey. On average, it can take up to 33 hours to reach St. Louis from a bus if you are coming from a faraway state. So, only opt for bus services if St. Louis is only a couple of hours away from your home.

Train Services

If you want a unique experience, something that your family, especially kids, have never tried before, take a train to St. Louis. You’ll reach there within 12-16 hours at max, with the option to sleep comfortably during the ride. The train tickets might be more expensive than buses, but you’ll get food and have comfortable seats. Don’t worry; more than 305 train routes reach St. Louis, so you can always find the tickets without waiting. The train station is almost 50 minutes from the main city, and you have to be extra careful after leaving the train as many pickpockets will be there. They’ll drop you at the St. Louis Union Station, and from there, you can take a cab to reach your hotel.

Take Your Car

While many might recommend renting a car to visit St. Louis, we won’t, because of the security issues there. You can add extra security measures to your vehicle and visit St. Louis, and you will feel much more comfortable because of less burden. Even if something were to happen, you can quickly call the authorities and show proof of ownership. In comparison, you’ll need to contact the company from where you rented the car first before letting anyone else know about the problems. On the other hand, you know the issues with your car and will be prepared for them. Who knows what problems you’ll face with the rented car, which is not great, especially when you are in the center of St. Louis.

Remember, St. Louis is extremely dangerous for tourists; you have to keep a strict eye on your surroundings to stay safe. Since you cannot carry a gun without a license, opting for other defensive mechanisms is better.

Use Common Sense

Most people get robbed in St. Louis because they start listening to every local on the street. As a tourist, you’ll be in the eyes of many snatchers, and they’ll try to act sweet and be your guide before doing their nasty work. Since you already know that St. Louis is not safe for tourists, it is better to avoid any locals trying to pay more attention to you. Also, check which places are not safe to visit and don’t go there. You can visit many places for entertainment, so leaving a couple of them won’t hurt anyone.

Be Cautious While Visiting the North Side

North St. Louis is filled with many jobless people. This city faced a huge drop in jobs making many people jobless during the last couple of years, and the northern side was affected the most. This means you’ll find people with no money, drug addicts, and many waiting to grab something from you. You might be tempted to visit this area because of its nice restaurants and places, but be cautious and securely park your car near the restaurant and avoid walking in the streets. You’ll be alright, as long as you don’t spend a lot of time strolling around to catch some attention.

Don’t Visit East St. Louis

Many might confuse East St. Louis with the main city, but it is a separate town with the highest crime rate in the USA. Avoid this area as much as possible, and don’t visit it unless you have something important or you know someone there. Even hanging with a group might not be helpful. If you ever want to visit it, keep a sharp eye and something sharp in your pocket, and don’t hesitate to use it for self-defense. In addition, since you’ll be having kids on the trip, make sure not to take them if you plan to visit this area.

Get Back to the Hotel Before Dark

Most of the crime in St. Louis happens in the dark, so it is wise to return to the hotel before the streetlights start turning on. If, for some reason, you want to stay out, make sure to park near the place. Finish the job, get in the car, and drive without listening to anyone. Also, keep an eye out while in the building and check if no one is messing with your car. Don’t hesitate to take action if you see someone near your car for a long time. While it is better to park it at a secure place, keeping your transport close to your eyes is recommended.

Do Not Accept Rides From Strangers

If you decide to take a short walk on St. Louis streets, many people will offer you a ride. Even if you are walking with the family, which we don’t recommend, you’ll see people being friendly and offering you a ride. The US authorities made it clear that no person should accept rides from people they don’t know in St. Louis. Even if that person approaches you with a taxi or a private ride, for safety purposes, don’t take it.

Lock Everything Properly at the Hotel

Unless you are booking the safest hotel, like Princeton Heights, it is better to double-check the locks before leaving. All hotels have security cameras to help catch burglars, but they won’t cover the cost of your loss. If you lock everything properly, the only option would be to use the duplicate key to open the door. If that happens, you’ll have all the rights to involve the police, and the hotel will pay you the loss.

A Family Day Trip to St Louis – St Louis Attractions

For many families living throughout the Midwest United States , a day trip to St. Louis, is a big deal.  St Louis attractions are many. There is so much to do in the city, that a family could visit several times a year, and find new experiences every time.  What is really great is the number of free activities available, so even those with budget challenges can enjoy a St. Louis day trip.

St. Louis was originally founded in 1764, by French fur traders, Pierre Laclede and Auguste Chouteau.  The city was purchased by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase, opening up the door for western expansion.  Serving as a primary crossing point for the Mississippi River , it became known as the Gateway to the West.

By 1870 it was the 4th largest city in the entire US, and a major port and railroad center.  This enabled the city to play a role in many historic events, including the 1904 World’s Fair, officially known as the Louisiana Purchase Exhibit, and the 1904 Olympics.  Many of the structures built for these premier events are still in use today under different guises and purposes.

Today, it is relatively small in the realm of cities, with a population of only 350,000 in the city, although the metropolitan area consists of about 2.9 million.  That means there are a lot of great things to do in St Louis, but not nearly as much traffic as huge cities. Getting around downtown is pretty easy. A family can do a lot of cool things in St Louis without the stress of heavy traffic.

So, if you are wondering what to do in St Louis then let’s look at some of those fun things to do St Louis, so you can make a plan.  Your family is going to love their St. Louis day trip. So here are some of the best St Louis attractions and things to do in St Louis with kids .

St Louis attractions – Visit the Arch

St Louis attractions

For any first time visitor to St. Louis, a trip to the city’s most famous landmark, the Gateway Arch , is required.  Standing 630 feet, it is the tallest man-made monument in the United States.  For younger children, just walking beneath the Arch, can be a source of wonder.  For families with older children, plan to make that trip to the top, and do some exploration.

St Louis attractions

The surrounding areas have been developed into the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial.  This area includes the riverfront park and walkways, the Gateway Arch Riverboats, the Arch itself, and the Old Courthouse.  Within these, there are museum exhibits, gift shops, and a cafe. Entrance to the park, the Old Courthouse, and the museum’s exhibits, is free.

St Louis attractions

Tickets for entrance to the Arch, the ascent to the top, a ride on the steamboats, and even a helicopter flight for a view from above, can all be purchased at the Old Courthouse, or at the riverside entrance to the Arch.

St Louis attractions

The area is now a part of the US National Park Service, rangers are onsite and available.  Educational demonstrations and narrations are scheduled throughout the day. There is also a Junior Ranger Program for children aged 3 to 12.  Although we have not participated in the program at the Jefferson Expansion Memorial, my grandchildren and I have completed several other Junior Ranger Programs and found them fun learning experiences.

St Louis attractions

As an added bonus, if historic churches are among your interests, the Basilica of St. Louis, King, also known as the old cathedral, is located in the park just to the south of the Arch.  The first cathedral on the west of the Mississippi River, in the US. Mass and special events are still held regularly. Visitors can explore the interior when the church is not in service.

A word of caution- This is one of the few areas St. Louis that may seem tricky to get around in a car.  Most visitors will come off the interstate to the south of the Arch, and it will be necessary to drive past it t get to parking.

St Louis attractions – Laclede’s Landing

St Louis attractions

If you spent quite a bit of time at the National Memorial, and would rather not drive through town for more options, there are a couple of nice options within walking distance.  At the north end of the riverfront park, is Laclede’s Landing. This is the oldest part of St. Louis, with original buildings and cobblestone streets.

On the way through the park, it is necessary to walk under Eads Bridge.  Eads is a 19th-century steel and truss bridge, with a fascinating understructure.  This is a great source of interest for children who love to build, and it may lead to some in-depth observation and discussion.

The Landing is not designed with families in mind, so it is not geared towards a lot of entertaining activities for children.  Nonetheless, children are often intrigued by the historic buildings and streets, and find many curiosities simply walking along the sidewalks.  There is a free mobile walking tour that can be downloaded at Laclede’s walking tour.

In the Landing, there is a wax museum and a novelty shop that is inviting, although in some cases it may be hard not to touch. There is also a small aquatic museum, called World Aquarium.  If stomachs are beginning to growl, there are several restaurant options available. In the later afternoon, carriage rides depart from the Landing, taking a route through the downtown area.

St Louis attractions – Busch Stadium and Ballpark Village

St Louis attractions

The other option within walking distance is in the opposite direction.  Sports-minded families may enjoy the Busch Stadium and Ballpark Village experience.  For visitors from outside the US, this is an opportunity to get a feeling for the country’s favorite sport.  It is located a couple blocks south of the Old Courthouse, and clearly visible on the street.

St Louis attractions

Tours of Busch Stadium are available all year round and include stops in the dugout, the Redbird Clubhouse, and the broadcast booth.  During the offseason, the last tour of the day is at 12:30 but in season another is given at 2:00 p.m Tickets can be purchased on site, or at least 24 hours in advance online.

Behind the stadium is the newly developed Ballpark Village.  The Hall of Fame Museum is quite an experience for baseball fans.  Various displays and exhibits include scale models of historic stadiums, a chance to announce historic moments from the broadcast booth, and an opportunity to handle authentic Cardinals bats.  The highlight is the Championship Gallery, showcasing the teams 11 World Series titles.

Also located within Ballpark Village are a number of restaurants and shops, most with a focus on a baseball and sports theme.  At Cardinal Nation, children eat free on Wednesday evenings.

On the other hand, if you are ready to drive a bit, we suggest a couple of other options for  family fun , still right in the city.

St Louis attractions – City Museum

St Louis attractions

There is no real way to describe City Museum  or compare it other experiences.  It is a completely unique experience, constructed by artists, with a focus on exploration.  It is built in the former International Shoe building, made entirely of found and repurposed items.  The result is an entirely eclectic environment and a source of endless curiosity.

St Louis attractions

Recently voted the #1 family attraction in the world in the Trip.com Awards, it features four floors of exhibits, including multiple play areas, tunnels to crawl through, a miniature train to ride, and circus performances.  There is also a huge outdoor play area called Monstrosity, and a rooftop play area, that are both open when weather permits. This must be top of your family trip .

There is a lot to explore at City Museum, and some families make an entire St. Louis day trip out of the museum alone.  In light of that, they offer a bracelet option, that enables re-entry for the entire day. There are also a couple of gift shops, and several concessions options, from sandwiches and smoothies to BBQ, although some are seasonal.

St Louis attractions – Upper Limits

St Louis attractions

If your children are a little older, something a little more challenging may be more in line.   Upper Limits is an indoor rock climbing facility, right in downtown.  It features climbs for all levels, including 10 different belays for beginners, as well as a boulder experience.

All newcomers to the facility are given a 15-minute orientation to the layout and features.  Experienced climbers can get right to the action after orientation. Those who are looking to try the experience for the first time should schedule in advance for a 2 hour instructional course.  Rock Climbing 101 is offered if everyone is over the age of 14, and Family Climb is offered for those with younger children.

St Louis attractions – Forest Park

St Louis attractions

One other option we suggest for a day trip to St. Louis, and especially for those on a budget, is Forest Park.  The park is a jewel in the crown of St. Louis. Designed for the 1904 World’s Fair, it features 1370 gorgeous green acres, in the middle of the city, and numerous educational and entertaining options.  What is more, almost everything in Forest Park is free.

If getting some fresh air and nature appeals to you, there are numerous walking trails through the park, and lots of space to sit and relax, including waterside areas at the lake and the small river.  Along with this, the Jewel Box is a greenhouse in the midst of the park, with a lush tropical garden inside. In the winter, there is ice skating available at Steinberg Skating Rink, and sledding on Art Hill, alongside the art museum.

The St. Louis Art Museum features over 33,000 works, spanning every era from ancient art to modern art, and encompassing work from all 6 inhabited continents.  The St. Louis History Museum celebrates the history of this diverse and important city with both standing and temporary exhibits.

St Louis attractions

The St. Louis Science Center offers a fun discovery environment.  Exhibits range from dinosaurs to space exploration, and a plethora in between.  On our visits, highlights included the hands-on experiments with motion and momentum, tracking radar of vehicles on the interstate overpass, and trying our hand at stitching up a patient after surgery.

St Louis attractions

The St. Louis Zoo is a world class zoo with absolutely free admission, although there are typically 1-2 feature areas that have a fee.  The zoo covers a large expanse of ground and simulates several ecosystems, and lovers of all kinds of animals will find something they love.

St Louis attractions

For my children, it was the gorillas and orangutans. For my grandchildren, it is the Humboldt penguins. There are several concession areas available for those who end up staying most of the day.

At the end of the day

St. Louis is an excellent choice for day trips.  There are dozens of fun and unique things to do in St Louis for people of all ages, and it is our top Midwest US choice for families.  To top it, there are many free things to do in St Louis. All of our suggestions keep a visitor near the downtown area, so a minimum of driving is required!  However, if you are looking for more than just a day, there is more than enough for a weekend in St. Louis.

Before leaving town, we highly recommend swinging back to the riverfront, to see the arch at night.  It is a spectacular sight, lit up against the night sky. It is a beautiful ending to a busy St. Louis day trip.

You know, we’ve never been to St. Louis, but it’s on our list for the future! Thanks for sharing so many fantastic places to check out.

I haven’t ever been to St. Louis, but your post tempts me to go right away! 🙂 I love the sound of the place, especially the zoo.

I wouldn’t mind checking out St. Louis one day! My daughter would love that Upper Limits place. She’s always climbing things.

Tons of things to do in St Louis the arch is a must see. Tons of things to see around St Louis as well. Go Cardinals.

I think it would be fun to visit St. Louis. Seeing the Arch in person and going inside would be on my bucket list.

St. Louis is a beautiful city. I wasn’t aware it was part of the Louisiana Purchase! The Arch would be so cool to see in person! Lots of other cool places to see!

I’ve always wanted to go to St. Louis every since a friend of mine went. I’m glad to see you added the zoo in your suggestions because she really had a great time there. Because of my love of wildlife, that’s where I’d want to start my journey.

I have been to St. Louis twice. I would definitely take my kids there because so much they can do. My favorite was visiting the arch and going all the way to the top.

I’ve been to St. Louis quite a few times and the zoo and the Arch are always some of my fave places to visit. I love flying in over the Arch. It’s absolutely beautiful to see from the airplane.

Thanks for sharing all of these wonderful places to visit in St.Louis. I’ve never been. It looks like such a nice place to bring the kiddos.

I have heard amazing things about City museum, it seems like so much fun! St. Louis is a city my husband and I would love to visit with the kids, there seems like a lot do to there.

There are a lot of things to do in St. Louis. It is actually a really beautiful city too.

I’ve been there once passing through to Kansas. I got to see the arch, but not much else. I’d love to visit the zoo with my kids.

I would love to see the Arch one day. We really need to see more of this country – lots of beautiful places to visit!

St. Louis is such a terrific place for family travels. I loved your photos you did a great job capturing the city.

Really enjoyed your detailed post with the lovely photographs.

That is certainly a great list of things to do in St. Louis – would love to head there someday! Great photos by the way 🙂

All of these tourist attractions in St. Louis are awesome. I would love to try the Upper Limits, I always wanted that!

Great post. I haven’t been to St. Louis in years, but I really want to go back to see how much it has changed over the years.

St. Louis is such a lovely place! I haven’t been there in so long and it would be nice to experience what it has to offer.

I never realized that there was so much to do in St. Louis. I always heard that they had a great museum but didn’t know what they had a phenomenal zoo, too. Time for a road trip!

There’s definitely a lot to do in St. Louis. We have never been out that way, but it would be fun to go on a road trip.

Your photos are absolutely incredible! I especially love the one that looks like a viaduct (maybe). The Arch is so cool and to think it’s the tallest monument in the US, it really must be a sight to behold in real life!

Superb – a city with a small population, less traffic and tons of free things to do – it’s a perfect recipe for a great family vacation!

I love the history attached with the city and it’s so fascinating to know about the French connection too 🙂

Your photos are so lovely! The Upper Limits looks pretty cool and challenging too. The Family Climb sounds like a good idea for a family bonding.

You know, all I knew of St Louis was that famous arch! Lovely to learn its history and to read more about what to do in a day trip there, I think I’d particularly enjoy Laclede’s Landing and the city museum.

We did not have family with us, just the RV. But if we did, I can see why my grandkids would live the City Museum. Bill I love the photo of the Basilica of St. Louis under the Arch!

That arch is iconic. I never really knew about St. Louis being a family destination. Always thought it would be Disneyland and other theme parks, but then, it gets old. And after reading this post, I am sold. It is a great place for family trips!

St. Louis is different than I expected. I had no idea about it’s history as part of the Louisiana purchase. There are lovely parks and things to do – the city museum looks really interesting and its surprising to see the Zoo is absolutely free!

Looks like St Louis would make for a good day-trip (or several, as you say). I’d love to visit the arch at sunset, get some great pictures there. The Jefferson Memorial also looks quite nice, the architecture. St Louis Zoo is also a place I’d love to go to! I can imagine the views from the sky if one were to take a helicopter ride!

Seems like you can’t escape the arch anywhere in St.Louis. It does look quite spectacular though. St.Louis seems like a great place for families.

The museum and the zoo looks like places my little one would enjoy. Saving this for our trip to St. Louis. Thanks for taking me on a tour through your photographs.

It’s wonderful to read about the city where I went to University. As a student, I had a very different perspective of the city. Now, reading about it from a visitor’s point of view, I can appreciate it quite a bit. One of my favorite activities is going up the arch. Did you have a chance to see the views from the top? Great article…I’m biased, of course 🙂

My dad worked for a while in St Louis but I never got the chance to visit – he did bring me back a mug of the famous arch but I’d love to see it for myself! The tour of Busch Stadium sounds cool too, I’d like to learn more about baseball.

I have never been to St. Louis but I would probably visit it just for the night photography. The pictures are really nice and taken in perfect lighting. Visiting the arch at sunset would be great.

Honestly, we have never given much thought on visiting St. Louis. But your post has attracted us. The arch is really gorgeous! Its history is really interesting and will enjoy visiting Laclede’s Landing and the city museum

St Louis Family Trip – An Itinerary for Kids

Sharing is caring!

st louis family day trips

We recently returned from our spring break adventures to St. Louis, Missouri and I thought it might be helpful to outline how we organized a kid-friendly St. Louis itinerary.

Planning your St Louis Family Trip – A 4-Day Itinerary for Kids

Explore forest park + one free museum.

You can’t go wrong with kicking off your first day in St. Louis with a trip to Forest Park . It’s one of the biggest city parks in the country and was originally developed as the grounds for the 1904 World’s Fair. Now it’s home to several museums, beautiful gardens, trails, and outdoor recreation opportunities.

St Louis family trip - Forest Park Visitors Center

Then, spend some time exploring various parts of the park before heading to one of the city’s FREE museums. Yup, that’s right, St. Louis boasts an incredible offering of FREE public museums including the St. Louis Art Museum , St. Louis Science Center (there are some special perks for ASTC Passport Members ), and the Missouri History Museum . Some have additional fees for special exhibits or parking but general admission is FREE to everyone.

Stay at the Drury Plaza Hotel at the Arch

St Louis Family Trip - arch photo

Like all Drury Hotels, an evening reception and full breakfast are included and there are plenty of suites available for families. Parking is an additional $20 per day but we were able to leave our car until mid-afternoon on our check-out day so it saved us paying for parking while we visited the Arch.

The hotel is extremely popular and when we stayed on a Saturday night, the pool and eating areas were pretty busy, so it’s something to keep in mind if you prefer a calmer hotel. Our room was nice and quiet though, and the location can’t be beat.

Over spring break, the tickets were available until a few days before and then quickly sold out. Luckily I checked again the morning of our visit (as I stood in a huge line to see if there were any walk-ups available) and they had opened another tram so I bought tickets online for a few hours later and we picked them up at will-call.

Plan to get in line at least 30 minutes ahead of your tram ticket time to go through security (more if it’s a holiday or peak summer hours). It moves quickly and then you’re able to check out the museum while you wait for your tram time.

Overall, we spent several hours here and still had more we could have seen. I can’t stress enough to buy your tickets ahead of time to make sure you can ride to the top if you want.

Old Courthouse

St Louis Family Trip - Old Courthouse Gateway Arch National Park

We found it to be quiet and a nice break from the crowds while we waited for our tram time. It opens at 8:00 most mornings (typically before the Arch) so if you’ve got early risers like I do, it’s nice to have sometime to do with them.

Stay in a neighborhood Airbnb

After swinging by the local grocery store, Fields Foods  for some breakfast items, we settled in and walked to the namesake Lafayette Square Park for some playground time.

As always, do some research online before choosing an Airbnb to make sure you’re comfortable with the neighborhood. I find reviews are often very helpful along with a quick Google map search. If you’ve never tried Airbnb, I’ve got some tips for you + a $40 off coupon .

If that seems a little overwhelming or you have younger kiddos with you, I recommend skipping City Museum and heading to The Magic House , St Louis’s children’s museum. You can read a review here and here’s some tips on saving money .

The on and off privileges for the train alone are worth it, especially if you’ve got little feet that will get tired.

15 Best Day Trips from St Louis

A port city built along the bustling banks of the Mississippi river, St Louis was founded in 1764. It was named for Louis IX of France, as the first European settlers there were French fur traders.

There’s a substantial depth of history in St Louis, both from the early European settlers and the natives who came before, making it a fascinating spot for a trip.

Once you’ve seen the famous Gateway Arch, browsed the city’s many museums, and explored its brilliant botanical garden, it’s time to widen your gaze to the area beyond.

Here are the best day trips to be taken from St Louis :

1. Springfield, Illinois

Springfield, Illinois

The state capital of Illinois is easily reachable within the day from St Louis, and is a great option for a change of scene if you still want the city life.

A mere 90-minute drive and you’ll find yourself in a thriving city, whose attractions are centred on the most famous ex-resident: Abraham Lincoln.

The best of these is the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and Library, which has lots of interesting exhibitions and provides a chance to interact with the history of the period.

Aside from Lincoln, there’s more history to be had: Springfield also hosts the pretty Old State Capitol building.

2. Hannibal

Hannibal, Missouri

Hannibal is on many St Louis lists because of its main claim to fame: it was the boyhood home of author Mark Twain.

This riverside town provided the inspiration for such classics as Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer – and therefore makes a great educational day trip.

In Hannibal you’ll have the chance to visit the novelist’s childhood home, as well as browsing the extensive museum dedicated to the author and his works.

And why not take a trip down the Mississippi river and relive the adventures of Huck himself?

3. Meramec Caverns

Meramec Caverns

One of the most intriguing natural wonders around St Louis, the Meramec caverns are more than deserving of a mention on the list of best day trips.

Missouri is, after all, known as the cave state – and these caverns are far and away some of the best on offer.

Not only are they a stunning example of nature’s work, they are also the oldest attraction along Route 66, and have some interesting historical claims to fame.

Jesse James was rumoured to have used the caves as a hideout, and before that they are thought to have been used as shelter by Native Americans.

Inn at Hermannhof

A highlight of the state’s wine country, Hermann is mainly known for its interesting German heritage – evidenced in the very German-sounding wineries like Hermannhof.

It was established in 1837 by – you guessed it – Germans, who had previously come from Philadelphia.

Located along the Missouri River, it’s a lovely place to spend some time enjoying your surroundings with a delicious glass of local wine, or perhaps taking a tour of one of the wineries.

There’s also often live music hosted on the outdoor terraces of the wineries, and if that’s not enough entertainment, you can always browse around the local shops.

5. The Katy trail

The Katy trail

This beautiful cycling and walking track stretches for over 200 miles throughout the state, more or less following the path of the Missouri River.

Cycling the trail is a great option if you feel like getting out into nature and leaving the car behind for a while.

It’s a relatively easy ride due to its fairly flat terrain, and if you get tired there are plenty of options for a quick bite to eat along the way, as well as places to shop for souvenirs of your adventure.

The trail can be started from several different points, but Defiance and Augusta are the most likely options from St Louis.

6. Johnson’s Shut-Ins

Johnson’s Shut-Ins

An intriguing natural attraction in the surrounds of St Louis is Johnson’s Shut-Ins.

A park created by volcanic activity long ago, the river’s flow has created pools, rapids and waterfalls that make for fun exploration.

There are hiking trails alongside, or in the summer you might simply sit around by one of the crystalline swimming spots and take a dip.

There are plenty of picnic spots to make this a great family day out, and there’s an excellent visitors’ centre to make your trip that bit easier.

7. Road Trip Along the Great River Road

Adult Bald Eagle Along The Great River Road

Often mentioned on lists of best road trips in the area, the Great River Road is surely one of the most aesthetically pleasing ways to spend your day away from St Louis.

Hugging the western border with Illinois, the road runs alongside the Mississippi River and provides some beautiful views out across the water.

There are also some excellent spots to stop at along the way, such as the town of Alton for some great, cheap eats, or the Pere Marquette State park for a chance to stretch your legs and perhaps spot some birds.

8. Shaw Nature Reserve

Shaw Nature Reserve

Located just 30 minutes outside of the city, nature abounds in Shaw Nature Reserve.

Over fourteen miles of trails you can experience a variety of different landscapes, from meadows to forests, as well as plenty of different fauna.

If walking isn’t your thing you can always take a ride on the Wilderness Wagon instead – or simply pack a picnic and find a nice spot in which to sit.

There are three different picnic areas in the park, plus a lovely outdoor classroom for the kids, with plenty of toys and equipment to keep them entertained.

9. Columbia

Columbia, Missouri

The home of the main campus of the University of Missouri, Columbia makes for a really fun day trip option.

Its downtown area has all the usual suspects of a student city: great restaurants, buzzing bars, and excellent shopping opportunities.

There are also quite a few good museums available in the town, two good examples of which include the George Caleb Bingham art gallery which hosts contemporary exhibitions, and the Museum of Art and Archaeology which covers a broader range of time periods.

10. Six Flags Theme Park, Eureka

Six Flags Theme Park, Eureka

It might not be the most cultural destination outside of St Louis, but sometimes all you need on your trip is a guilt-free day riding the roller coasters.

Six Flags is a chain with branches all over the US, so you’re guaranteed to have a very happy family at the end of a day here.

There are plenty of food options at the park, plus entertainment beyond the rides in the form of staff decked out as characters from Looney Tunes.

If you’re feeling the heat, you can also head into the on-site waterpark – the price of which is included in your ticket – for a fun splash around.

11. Diving in Bonne Terre Mine

Bonne Terre Mine

The largest freshwater dive site in the USA is located just south of St Louis along Highway 67. French for ‘good earth’, the site used to be a functioning mine before being flooded.

It’s a fascinating underwater adventure, and divers can see the mine just as it was left: ore carts, picks, and locomotives all lying just as they were in 1961 when it was abandoned.

If you don’t dive, it’s still possible to experience the site above water, by taking a narrated tour around the underground rooms of the mines.

A boat ride is another option.

12. Ste. Genevieve

Ste. Genevieve

A gorgeous French-colonial town, Ste. Genevieve was actually the first permanent location for European settlers in Missouri.

Its French influence is much in evidence in the architecture around town, which makes wandering round the town more than pleasant.

Named after the patron saint of Paris, Ste. Genevieve has lots of entertaining diversions: you can take a tour of some of the historic houses, or visit a very French winery.

All in all, a trip to Ste. Genevieve feels like you’ve travelled back in time, rather than just an hour south of St Louis.

13. St. Charles

St. Charles

The historic charm of St. Charles, located around half an hour from St Louis, is hard to resist.

Make sure to visit its most important monument, the First State Capitol from 1821, of which you can take a tour.

The Capitol has been restored and decked out in the furnishings of the period, so it makes for a great interactive history lesson.

Then, of course, St. Charles is fully equipped with an excellent selection of restaurants, especially around Main Street, for after you’ve finished taking in the cultural sights.

14. Ozark National Scenic Riverways

Ozark National Scenic Riverways

Though a fair way from St Louis, the Ozark National Scenic Riverways are nonetheless worth a visit if you’ve exhausted the closer options.

This was the first national park area to protect a river system, and it’s easy to see why it was designated a protected area in 1964. There are two particularly famous rivers – the Jacks Fork River and Current River – which were the initial reason for the creation of the national park, but there are also heaps of other swimming spots, hikes, and historic sites in the area.

15. Washington

Washington, Missouri

What better place to head on a day trip from St Louis than the town known for being the gateway to wine country? Washington sits on the Missouri River’s south bank, and aside from having more wineries nearby than you could possibly handle, it’s got great eating options, shopping, and even a historical society museum.

If you’re visiting in August, the options get even better: the annual Washington Town and Country Fair is a spectacular event for the whole family.

Living well and centsibly in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area

St. Louis with Kids: Our Visit and Guide to an Amazing Family Trip

July 9, 2019 By TC Frugal Mom

St. Louis with Kids: Our Visit and Guide to an Amazing Family Trip

From St. Paul to St. Louis with Kids!

My kids have had a ton of adventures while growing up here in the Twin Cities – so many adventures that they’ve hardly noticed they had actually never been outside of Minnesota and Wisconsin!

I had been to many states growing up, but there are actually many I have not been to myself right here in the midwest. So this summer we decided to take a family road trip to a place we had all never been to before: St. Louis, Missouri!

Why did we choose St. Louis? For a few reasons: 1) Its metro area is similar in size to the Twin Cities: 2.8 million vs. 3.3 million. 2) It’s rich in history – especially the Gateway Arch, of course, which was built as the “gateway to the west” as it is located near the beginning of the famous Lewis & Clark Expedition (1804 – 1806). 3) And there are some super unique family attractions to visit, many of which are FREE!

Plus, driving to St. Louis from the Twin Cities meant we could be traveling through a total of 5 states (yay, more my kids could say they could see!).

We could just go directly south to Missouri through Iowa, but I decided to take a more interesting route. What we did was we made it a 5-day trip with a stop overnight in the Wisconsin Dells on the way there, and a stop in Iowa on the way back. Both ways were about the same distance, and overall, it worked out very well.

And fortunately there was an opportunity to visit St. Louis with some fellow bloggers this summer and explore some NEW attractions opening up this year, so we scheduled our trip for that weekend and I will tell you, I don’t know who was more excited, my kids or me!

From St. Paul to St. Louis!

To Drive or to Fly?

I looked into the costs for driving vs. flying from St. Paul to St. Louis, and honestly, I estimated that the costs are pretty comparable for a small family. In general, driving is cheaper than flying, but you can actually get a round-trip ticket from St. Paul to St. Louis for $120 – $150, especially if you book in advance. For a family of 4, that’s around $500 – $600.

If you drive, staying somewhere along the way each way and doing some sightseeing on the way, your costs between lodging, gas, food and entertainment can easily get to around $500 – $600, especially if you stay in the Dells.

We chose to drive because we wanted the road trip experience!

On the Road!

We left on a Thursday afternoon and it took about 3-1/2 hours to get to the Dells. We had been to the Dells several times before, as it’s been one of our favorite family destinations in the midwest. But this was a quick stay overnight.

Wisconsin Dells AmericInn Buffalo Phil's

We stayed at the AmericInn hotel in the Wisconsin Dells , since our AmericInn hotel stay in Duluth earlier this year was so enjoyable, and yes, this location was definitely worth it, as it also had a lovely lodge look to it and had a pool, fitness center and free breakfast. We didn’t have time for attractions this time but we did eat dinner at our favorite restaurant there, Buffalo Phil’s , where a model train brings your food to your table! In the evening, we went to downtown to shop (there’s always so much to see here).

If you’re thinking of heading to the Dells this summer, be sure to visit Noah’s Ark Waterpark – I’ve recently written that they’re celebrating their 40th anniversary with special events all summer long!

To St. Louis!

Welcome to Illinois

The next morning we headed out and drove the remaining 5 hours to St. Louis, with a few stops on the way. (I’m glad we did this in two days as with kids and many interesting places to stop along the way, the overall drive can easily take extra time.) We even tried our first “Steak ‘n’ Shake” burgers, as they were all over Illinois and we don’t have any in Minnesota.

The Union Station Hotel

St. Louis Union Station Hotel

When driving into St. Louis, I’m so glad we experienced our first glimpses of the Gateway Arch driving from Illinois over the Mississippi river into St. Louis. It was stunning and quite the welcome!

We shortly arrived at our hotel in St. Louis about 5:00pm. We stayed at the Union Station hotel which is just down the street from the Arch and is probably the most impressive hotel in the area. And it looks like a castle!

St. Louis Union Station Architecture

The Union Station hotel has quite the history since it first opened in 1894 as a travel hub with 22 railroad tracks and 10,000 passengers passing through every day. It closed its doors as a train station in 1978, and then in 1985 it was opened as a AAA Four Diamond hotel with 539 rooms, a shopping center, and various restaurants. The beautiful, original architecture remains though, as we saw firsthand.

St. Louis Union Station Hotel Amenities

The hotel has many amenities including a beautiful outdoor pool, a gigantic fitness center, and some unique entertainment I’ve never experienced in a hotel. There are nightly shows on the Grand Hall ceiling with images and music, and there’s an outdoor fire & light show on the pond by the pool.

Watch my 4-minute video of the fire & light show:

Now the Union Station hotel is expanding with a brand new Aquarium, ferris wheel and new restaurants opening later in 2019. There’s also the Polar Express Train Ride , an annual St. Louis tradition featuring real train rides from St. Louis Union Station to the North Pole in November and December. Riders get to dress in their pajamas and enjoy photo opportunities, a visit with Santa and his elves, Christmas carols, a Polar Express story and other activities.

We enjoyed a delicious dinner prepared by the hotel’s head chef as we watched a ceiling light show with a Polar Express theme.

Watch my short video of parts of the Holiday Light Show:

Breakfast at the Station Grille

St. Louis Union Station Station Grille Restaurant

In the morning we enjoyed a delicious buffet breakfast at the Station Grille right inside the hotel. Then our group met for a hard hat tour of the NEW St. Louis Aquarium which was being built right there at the Union Station.

A Hard Hat tour of the NEW St. Louis Aquarium

We got to preview the St. Louis Aquarium and learn about the features such as:

  • 13,000 aquatic animals from fresh water and marine environments around the world
  • more than 60 sharks and rays in a vast 250,000-gallon saltwater environment
  • Visitors will enter the Aquarium via a 3-D virtual reality train ride that honors the history of St. Louis Union Station’s railroad past

Glimpses of the new St. Louis Aquarium and attractions

They are also building additional attractions including the St. Louis Wheel, a 200-foot tall ferris wheel; a Carousel; Mini Golf, a Mirror Maze, a Ropes Course and new restaurants. It will be quite a hub of excitement for families!

Now, once these attractions are open, this would be a wonderful way to spend your first full day in St. Louis. But since they weren’t open yet, we explored other areas of the city!

Lunch at the Boundary

Lunch was at The Boundary at the historic Cheshire Inn on the edge of St. Louis’ Forest Park. The food is “a modern interpretation of comforting classics” and the menu included many comfort foods but with an elegant twist. There is an extensive beverage program with a large bar, dim lighting and leather couches.

Though it seemed upscale, it was very family-friendly.

Lunch at the Boundary restaurant in St. Louis

We enjoyed a meal from the brunch menu – my kids had sandwiches and fries, and I had blueberry pancakes with ricotta, lemon curd and berry balsamic glaze. The pancakes were huge and the lemon curd was amazing. I also had a Shirley Temple drink (a bit early in the day for me for booze).

Free Attraction: The St. Louis Zoo

There are actually many free attractions in St. Louis, and one is the St. Louis Zoo ! We visited in the afternoon for a bit and saw everything from gorillas to seals to elephants.

We rode the train, which goes around the entire zoo. You have to pay for the train but it’s worth it to see the whole place and get a break from the hot sun (or rain) for a while.

The St. Louis Zoo and train

There is a children’s zoo which is a must-see for kids. It’s another part of the zoo you have to pay for (yeah, it can add up), but it had a ton to do, including an area where you can brush and interact with goats!

My kids also loved the insect and butterfly buildings, especially showing me all the creepy, crawly stuff and getting “eek!’s” from me.

Visiting the St. Louis Zoo with kids

Dinner at Bailey’s Range

Dinner was at Bailey’s Range in downtown St. Louis, a popular place to get great burgers and shakes. They specialize in 100% grass fed, grain-finished American range beef, and they even make their buns and ice cream in-house too.

Bailey's Range in St. Louis

They had a great menu with many burger and shake options to pick from. My kids had grilled cheese sandwiches. I enjoyed a chicken burger and salad, with a Hawaiian Breeze drink, made with coconut rum, peach nectar, lemonade and cranberry juice.

Bailey's Range in St. Louis

I also enjoyed a cinnamon shake which was way yummier than I expected, and we got a glimpse of one of their amazing burgers.

The Gateway Arch

Now, no trip to St. Louis is complete without a trip to the Gateway Arch. And it was as magnificent as we could hope for.

The Gateway Arch

There are actually a variety of ways to experience the Arch . The grounds are open from 5:00am – 11:00pm year-round. The Old Courthouse, built in 1839, is open 8:00am – 4:30pm. Both of these you can enjoy for free.

The visitor’s center has a museum that’s also free to the public. It covers 201 years of history about the westward expansion of the United States. It’s very interactive, with activities even for the youngest kids.

Paid attractions include the Tram to the Top and the Riverboat Cruises. Yes, you can actually ride to the top of the Arch in a tram (watch my video below to see what it is like!).

Want to see what it’s like going to the top of the Gateway Arch? Watch my 2-minute video of our experience!

Brunch at the Three Sixty Rooftop Bar

After such a busy and fun previous day, we slept in a bit the next morning (aaahhh…sleeping in in a beautiful, comfortable hotel room!). Then we enjoyed a late morning brunch at the Three Sixty Rooftop Bar at Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark.

Now this restaurant is a must-see. It’s at the top of the Hilton hotel and you can view the city from all the sides, both indoors and outdoors. And the food is delicious. We ordered from the brunch menu which included a Barbacoa Benedict, Traditional Breakfast with eggs and sausage, and Buttermilk Pancakes. (It was all good but the coffee was my favorite part.) The prices were reasonable too, considering the great views you get. Brunch prices were around $10-12 per meal.

Three Sixty Rooftop Bar in St. Louis

The views were amazing. We could see everything including the Arch, the Old Courthouse, and Busch Stadium (yes you can watch a Cardinals ballgame from here).

Three Sixty Rooftop Bar in St. Louis

Free Attraction: Science Center

After our brunch we checked out and decided to visit another attraction before starting our journey home. We wanted to see the City Museum , which I heard is a must-see, 100-year-old warehouse filled with repurposed pieces of cities. But we didn’t have enough time to really give that attraction justice this time, so we headed to the Science center.

St. Louis Science Center

The Science Museum , like the Zoo, is FREE, with additional attractions you can pay for within. We spent about an hour here, but we could have easily spent a whole day here.

St. Louis Science Center

There are literally over 700 interactive experiences here. My kids were really engaged in the many activities like learning about video games in GameXPloration, and controlling a rocketship in Mission to Mars. And it was a great place to stay cool as it was about 96-degrees outside today! (St. Louis definitely gets a bit warmer than St. Paul in the summer.)

Heading to Iowa

Around mid-afternoon we left the Science Center and hit the road to Iowa, where we would sleep for the night. We ate at St. Louis Bread Company on the way out of St. Louis (did you know that St. Louis Bread Company is also Panera Bread)?

Heading home from St. Louis

We drove a few hours to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, which was a good midpoint. We wanted to get to Cedar Falls, Iowa, which was a bigger city and was closer to home, but Mt. Pleasant had some decent hotels, so we stayed at an AmericInn there and had a Pizza Hut pizza party in our room.

Avenue of the Saints

Avenue of the Saints

Did you know that U.S. Route 61 is known as the Avenue of the Saints, because it connects St. Louis to St. Paul? It’s a 550-mile, four-lane highway. There are many cities along the way to visit.

The rest of our drive from Mt. Pleasant to home was about 5 hours and it was a quiet drive through farmland. It was quite the contrast from all the excitement we had in St. Louis, but we were excited to say we had traveled now through 5 states!

Overall Thoughts and Recommendations!

Whew! As you can see, this was quite a trip! We saw SO much and so can you!

My recommendations:

  • Stay in St. Louis at least 3 days to really take it in. You definitely want to see the Gateway Arch, at least 2-3 other attractions like the Zoo, Science Center and City Museum (we’re going there next time), and of course, the Aquarium when it opens.
  • Plan to visit anytime of year, but ideally after the St. Louis Aquarium opens, which will be later in 2019. Check out their website for updates.
  • Stay in the Union Station hotel if you can. It’s so historic, so memorable, so appealing, and that’s where even more of the action will be once the Aquarium opens. Watch for package deals as the Aquarium’s grand opening approaches.
  • Dine in places like we did if you can. They were all amazing. I especially recommend the Three Sixty Rooftop Bar to get some great views of the city.
  • Visit “ Explore St. Louis ” for more information and to plan your trip!

To replicate our trip, budget at least $1300 for a family of 4. That’s about $500 for travel to and from St. Louis, and about $800 for expenses there. If your budget is smaller, there are many ways you can do this or a similar trip for less.

Our travel expenses were about $80 – 100 per night at the AmericInn each night, plus gas, some shopping, and food (mostly fast food and we brought our own snacks).

Hotel: The Union Station Hotel rates range from $150 – 250 a night for the room we had, depending on the time of year you visit. This includes a lot, as there are many amenities. They do have discounts, such as for AAA, and there are package options. There are many extras including valet service.

Attractions: The Gateway Arch’s Tram ride to the top starts at $12 for adults, $8 for kids. The museum and grounds are free. There are other attractions you can buy individually or combine for package deals.

The Zoo and Science Center were free to visit, but you do pay for parking onsite ($12-15 per day). There are also attractions within that are at cost.

Other free attractions include the Missouri History Museum, the St. Louis Art Museum, Forest Park (which is actually bigger than New York’s Central Park), Grant’s Farm, and Laumeier Sculpture Park, to name a few. Learn more about these attractions in St. Louis on the Explore St. Louis website .

For a frugal trip to St. Louis, you could spent a significant amount of your time going from free attraction to free attraction and have an amazing vacation.

Transportation: St. Louis has excellent public transportation. You can take a bus or train to anywhere and there is a free shuttle bus between the free Forest Park attractions (like the Zoo and Science Center) on weekends.

Dining: Our meals were worth approximately $50 each for the 3 of us, and it was all fantastic. If you don’t want to spent that much though, there are grocery stores and fast food places in downtown St. Louis, and there’s a cafe with some grab and go options in the Union Station hotel.

Do you have questions about our trip? Let me know!

And be sure to follow my blog for more about St. Louis and the soon-to-open aquarium!

Where is a good place to stay for a romantic weekend in or near St. Louis?

The St. Louis area is home to a number of wonderful places for a romantic weekend and it all starts with staying at a cozy bed and breakfast inn. One of the more well-known in the city is the Fleur-De-Lys Mansion. The mansion is architecturally stunning, and the proprietors have managed to maintain the structure’s original character and charm which goes back to when it was first built in 1913. You’ll find four meticulously decorated and themed rooms for your romantic stay. Some have jacuzzi tubs but they also have a central one for all guests to use. There is also an amazing library/sitting room, which is great for reading, relaxation, and getting to know the other guests. And, the gourmet breakfasts are amazing.

I’m looking for a really kid-friendly park in St. Louis.

Well, there are lots of them, as St. Louis has always been a great place to raise a family. If your kiddos are into animals, they would definitely love the Turtle Playground . Located at Oakland Ave and 6128 Tamm Ave, the park is home to eight giant concrete turtles that the kids (OK, you too!) can climb on and scoot under. Bring your camera and take lots of pictures because they really are something to behold!

Where can I find the best pizza in St. Louis?

Folks in St. Louis LOVE their pizza joints and you will find plenty of amazing ones all over town. Whether you enjoy deep-dish, thin crust, Chicago-style, or other varieties, and fancy yourself meat-centric, vegetarian, or vegan, you will find something to suit your taste buds almost anywhere. Among the locals’ favorites are Pizza Head, Pi Pizzeria, and Cecil Whittaker's Pizzeria (they have several locations)  just to name a few.

Vacationer’s Guide

Comparing destinations: which one is right for you.

Comparing the destinations and properties will make it easier to decide the best pick.

And always remember to include your preferences as well as your budget.

To compare, Four Seasons St. Louis offers a luxurious stay at a pricey expense.

On the other hand, Hotel Saint Louis, Autograph Collection has an array of room options and excellent service.

Some of its rooms need improvements, though.

Meanwhile, Embassy Suites Saint Louis is close to every must-see and visit in the city.

But being close to downtown means a busy and noisy place, too.

Finally, Live! by Loews gives you a fantastic city view from your room.

It’s an excellent place for a weekend getaway in St. Louis, but some staff needs to learn good customer service.

How I Picked The Destinations

Being a seasoned traveler and writer allowed me to stay and see the beauty of St. Louis.

I stayed in the places mentioned and rated them based on my experience.

My thorough research of tourist reviews on each property also strengthens my thoughts and conclusion about each destination.

Our Property Rating Method

I rate these properties based on the following criteria:

  • Room Variety: I use this to rate the room options offered by every property. What room types are available? Can it accommodate different budgets, group sizes, and preferences? I ask myself these questions when evaluating the property’s room variety.
  • Comfort and Cleanliness: This measures the overall cleanliness and comfort of the accommodations. Does it have comfortable beds? Are the rooms spotless and dust-free? These are important factors I consider when rating comfort and cleanliness.
  • Location: This is used to evaluate how convenient and accessible the property is. How close is it to the attractions? Are there good public transportation options near the location? Is it easily accessible for families? These questions are important when I rate the location of every accommodation.
  • Affordability: I use this to evaluate the property’s affordability. Are the room rates reasonable? Does the property have any additional fees? Does the property offer discounts or packages? I ask myself this in order to rate affordability.
  • Family-Friendliness: This evaluates the family-friendliness of each property. Does it offer babysitting services and children’s activities? Does it have connecting rooms for families? I use these questions to rate the family-friendliness of the property.

My kids take lunch to school every day, and I always pack them Honest Kids organic juice boxes.

The juice has no artificial sweeteners and contains only 35 calories per serving.

I've noticed that many customers aren't aware they can find deals on their favorite vacation spots through Costco Travel . For example, my family has used Costco's vacation packages to go to Disneyland.

The perks for each vacation package vary, but we've gotten discounts on hotels, amusement parks, and car rentals.

I also love that I don't have to worry about paying in full right away, as most packages offer payment plans. Customers can book their vacation online or speak to a live agent over the phone.

The Klipsch Gig XXL party speaker is a karaoke-night necessity.

Kirkland Signature St. Louis ribs are a tasty, easy meal.

When it comes to Costco's prepared meals , our current go-to is the Kirkland Signature seasoned St. Louis ribs.

The delicious, fully cooked pork-back ribs are prepared in the deli and packaged so they're ready to serve. They're seasoned with a light rub and tend to sell out very quickly at my location.

I picked up a pack of ribs for only $14.40.

We get almost all our cakes at Costco.

Whether for a birthday or another celebration, we love getting our cakes from the Costco bakery . Each cake is handmade, and customers can place a custom order by filling out a form at the store.

Customers can choose from various cake, filling, and icing options. The bakery also offers a variety of designs and can write a customized message on the cake.

Cakes are available in either half-sheet or round variations.

In my family, the Gourmia air fryer is a kitchen staple.

The Gourmia air fryer is a staple for both the adults and kids in our family. The device lets my family bake, roast, broil, reheat, and even just keep food warm.

It has optional preheat and turn-food reminders, an auto shut-off function, and dishwasher-safe pieces like the basket and crisper tray.

The air fryer is $50 at my location.

We love looking through Costco's selection of clothing.

Costco offers great deals on clothing like jackets, pajamas, shirts, socks, and jeans.

I've seen a variety of sizes suited for babies, toddlers, teens, and adults. In the past, I've picked up items like Ugg boots and a Danskin pullover .

An eight-piece OXO container set costs $50 at my store.

My kids are big fans of the Frito-Lay variety pack of chips.
